A Personal Story in Christchurch during the First World War As next year marks the hundredth anniversary of the start of World War One, I thought I would show that one hundred years is not as long as you think. All of us have some family members who will have heard stories, be it from fathers, mothers and grandparents, showing how the ‘War to End All Wars’ affected those locally. A personal one is the story of my Great Grandfather, Edmund Walter Childs. As a printer and compositor for the Christchurch Times (the precursor to the Advertiser, located near Blockbusters on Bargates), he was in what was called a ‘reserve occupation’ so he was therefore exempt from army service. However, a scheme instigated by the seventeenth Earl of Derby changed this somewhat. The concept was that men who voluntarily registered their names would only be called when absolutely necessary. By December 1915 (when it was abolished), 215,000 men had enlisted and a further 2,185,000 had attested for later enlistment. My great grandfather would have been one of those in the latter category as he was called up in August 1917. From here it is worth quoting the Christchurch Times article ‘Death of Mr Edmund Childs’, dated November 1917. ‘...we regret to announce the death of Mr W.E Childs which occurred Monday last at Winkton...’. It goes on to say that as soon as he enlisted he was ‘...obviously totally unfit for the duties having undergone an operation for appendicitis a few months before he was passed to the Durham Light Infantry. He broke down completely under the strain of training and about a month later was discharged. He returned to work but was unable to carry on as heart trouble incapacitated him’. A week later he was buried in Burton churchyard, but that was
not the end of the story. My great grandmother was subsequently informed by the authorities that, as he did not die on active service, she would not be entitled to a widow’s pension. Remember that the welfare state would not exist for another thirty years and she had to bring up my grandfather and his brother who were young children at the time. Her cause was taken up by Sir John Kemp-Welch who was lord of the manor of Burton, Winkton and Sopley among others. He raised questions in Parliament about the matter and as a result she got the same pension as any widow whose husband had died in service to his country. So this account shows that even though I am in my thirties, I too have a family story that shows how the effects of this conflict were felt personally and locally. There must be many other stories out there that show how events of a hundred years past, however distant that may seem, can still have an impact now. I would be very happy to hear your own tales for possible future publication in a planned book to commemorate the Centenary of the outbreak of WWI in Christchurch. Damien Bates BA(hons)

Talking about Wildlife...
Springtime on the heaths Springtime welcomes the appearance of many heathland species after the winter. Heathlands are a unique habitat for wildlife, and Dorset heaths rate amongst the best in Europe, providing a habitat year round for many rare and threatened species. The devastating fire on Upton Heath in 2011 destroyed thousands of animals, but thanks to the efforts of Dorset Wildlife Trust, local authorities, businesses and many volunteers, the heath is on way to recovery. To aid this, last year a small herd of Shetland and British White cattle were introduced to graze the heath, with the support of SITA Trust. Both bird watchers and reptile enthusiasts will find something on the heaths. Woodlarks, Dartford warblers and nightjars are all found there, happily flitting amongst heather and gorse. Be careful, though, as some will be building their nests on the ground in the early spring, so make sure to stay on designated paths and not disturb them. As the days get warmer, the reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are heath land specialists, not found in any other environment. The best time to see the shy sand lizard is April, when the males turn a beautiful emerald green, but only for a short period of
time. There is no shortage of denizens of the insect world, either. Both the exotic wasp spider and the green tiger beetle appear on the heathland scene in April. Heathlands are of significant environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced in the last few decades. To help preserve heaths and their vulnerable wildlife, please always make sure your dog is on a short lead between March and August. A man of experience on the merger Robert Talbot, Poole Hospital’s Medical Director and experienced surgeon, explains how the proposed merger of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals and Poole Hospital NHS foundation trusts will provide even better healthcare in Dorset. “Should the merger go ahead, we will not only sustain vital services for patients but provide even better care. There are increasing expectations for consultantled care, seven days a week, which are not sustainable on both sites. The merger will allow us to unify or centralise some services that we currently duplicate, while providing as muc h as we can on both sites so that patients don’t have to travel unnecessarily. “We want to provide the best emergency care to patients with urgent surgical problems, by giving the surgeons sufficient dedicated time, and the necessary support services, to treat patients with an acute surgical need at any time of day or night. The Women’s Institute Central Christchurch Branch The March meeting of the Christchurch Central W.I was very well supported and began with a rousing chorus of Jerusalem, followed by Happy Birthday, for the members celebrating Spring Birthdays, small posies were handed out. Future plans for the Summer were discussed to include a Summer Garden Party and a Coach trip to Weymouth. Members this month will meet for coffee at The Captains Club Hotel, and lunch at ‘The George’ In Christchurch Several members have booked to see the production of Ragtime at the Regent in April. An appeal was made for more ladies to swell the ranks of the Drama Group as a new collection of sketches and readings is going into production shortly. After a Coffee break the Members gave a
warm welcome to Dr Yvonne Varley, whose talk ‘A Doctors Ten Commandments’, was both interesting and amusing. These were the commandments that she had practised during her professional life as a G.P. working in the North of England...( A most important 11th Commandment was ‘Never Assume’) A Vote of Thanks was given by Pat Gillingham herself a retired Midwife. Members had been asked to bring along old medical items for the Competition, this produced a full table of very odd bits and pieces, including the first stitches taken out by a member during her training as a young nurse. Faces of Musical Steps Over 100 excited class members entered the draw to find ‘faces of Musical Steps’ in Dorset. The music and movement classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers are held in Christchurch, Littledown and Westbourne providing a fun-packed, highquality educational experience that babies, children and parents love. ‘Musical Steps’, is run by local mum and musician Heather Smith, who organised the “photo-shoot” with the help of local photographer ‘Signature Photography’ at Bee a Bug Café in Westbourne. The soft play café provided the perfect outlet between photos. “I’m really pleased with how the images have turned out – through percussion instruments and props the photoshoot was
able to express and convey the educational fun we have in our classes” Said Heather. Musical Steps recently won parent-voted ‘Winner of Netmums’ favourite Pre-school Class’ Award and is up for not 1 but 3 accolades in the National Awards What’s On 4 Little Ones including an individual nomination for Heather of Most Outstanding Activity Leader for the Under 5s (South). PLANNING FOR CARE There has been much said in the National Press recently about care fee funding. Some but not all of the elderly population will require permanent care as they get older either in a residential or nursing home or they will require help in their own home. Obviously such care costs but who should pay for this? Many people believe they have paid Tax and National Insurance all their lives and therefore the Government should foot the bill. Currently this is the case if the value of your capital assets including your home do not exceed £14,250. This is unlikely if you own your home or part of your home in the Dorset area. If your capital exceeds the value of £23,250, unless you have a serious health issue which qualifies for continuing care funding by the NHS,you will have to fund the whole of your care. Between £14,250 and £23,250 you pay a contribution towards your care. Your income will also be taken into account in assessing your contribution. The Government have been reviewing the current system and they have recently announced changes they are planning to make. The proposals which the government have announced they are intending to bring in from April 2017 contain three main changes: 1. They introduce a lifetime cap on care costs set at £75,000. This means that the government limit the amount anyone has to pay for their care to £75,000. This cap will only apply to the care element of these costs. It does not include what the Government are calling the “hotel” costs ie the non care element of staying in a care home such as accommodation and food.
2. An increase in the upper level of the means test to £123,000 therefore anyone with assets between £14,250 and £123,000 whose need for care reaches the appropriate threshold will be entitled to some financial support according to a sliding scale. The Government who will set out eligibility criteria. You must first be assessed by your Council as having needs that meet the new national criteria. They will then estimate how much they will spend on your care. If you spend more than this on your care the additional spending will not count towards your cap. 3. There will also be a cap of the “hotel costs” these will be limited to £12,000 a year. Details of how the scheme will work have not yet been released but it is clear that only those people with less than £14,250 in savings or those who have really serious care needs will get free care. This is similar to the current position. Maria Shaw of Harold G Walker recommends that you contact a solicitor to discuss how to protect some of your assets from being taken into account in a financial assessment by the use of Trusts in your Will. Maria adds that it is useful to meet with a solicitor if you are planning your care to discuss various issues that can arise such as who should manage your finances if you become unable to do so. The Great Christchurch Bake Weekend & Fete Following on from the success of last year’s Bake Day this year the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival is launching the “Great Christchurch Bake Weekend and Fete”. Taking place on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May when Christchurch Quay (The Quomps) will be transformed into the scene of a typical English fete, with white marquees, a giant helter-skelter and a whole lot more. Aspiring bakers are being encouraged to dust off their aprons and get baking to enter the competitions. On the Saturday the BBC’s Great British Bake Off champion of 2011, Jo Wheatley, will be helping to judge the adults’ baking competition and demonstrating her skills. There will be fascinating demonstrations taking place in the cookery theatre, sponsored by The Captain’s Club Hotel & Spa and supported by Waitrose, and hands-on cookery sessions for children and adults presented by the Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust. Tickets for the sessions can be bought through the Regent Centre website at www.regentcentre.co.uk. On the Sunday the Food Festival’s patron Lesley Waters will assist in judging the children’s baking competition and the showstopper category. Once again the cookery theatre and hands-on cookery sessions will be in full flow.
Over both days there will be individual trade stalls, a children’s fete and vintage cars as well as food and drink stalls to help make a real day of it. Money may be a bit tight sometimes but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. Indeed it can mean the complete opposite. Think of the times you’ve had in your life that have been great. Have they always been the ones that have involved money? Not necessarily. Read on for some simple ideas that you can do alone or with your friends and family that cost little or nothing but could bring a great deal of pleasure. Dig out some cards or board games. When did you last sit down and play draughts, or crib? Traditional games are just that - traditional because they stand the test of time. Google the rules if you don’t know how to play - there’s no excuse! Don your wellies, make a little flask of tea and go out for a good old stomp across the beach or if you’re not lucky enough to live near the coast, a local field or nature reserve. There are always places to walk. Get the wind through your hair and aim to be out for a good part of the day. You should sleep better at night too. Check out local galleries and museums. Often these are free and they can hold a good range of interesting exhibits. When the weather gets nicer, stick a tent up in your garden and ‘go camping’ for the night! Grab some pencils or paints and just draw for the pleasure of it. Even if the end result isn’t going to be put into the Tate just the act of putting pen (or brush) to paper is rather therapeutic.

Family Adventure Festival 2013 New for 2013, the Family Adventure Festival is a new event for the town of Bournemouth and promises a great weekend of excitement at the end of the school holidays. The festival will feature a wide range of indoors and outdoors pursuits along with expert advice and the opportunity to purchase clothing and accessories. The event promises to be a fun family experience! The BH Live Adventure Hub will take place indoors at the Bournemouth International Centre from 31st May – 2nd June 2013, with numerous activities also taking place on the beautiful, award winning beach. The fantastic Animal Bike Tour are confirmed to wow the crowds with their amazing bike stunt demos, there’s a bushcraft area, rollapaluza, power boarding lessons, kite boarding demos and a whole lot more still to be confirmed!
Tickets are very affordable and you’ll need tickets if you want to make the most of the festival. A series of fringe events will take place in adjacent locations around the BIC from 19 May – 2nd June 2013. The BH Live Adventure Hub is organised by VOS Media, organisers of numerous events including The Outdoors Show, The London Bike Show and the Ski and Snowboard Show – and the Family Adventure Festival Wristbands will be issued instead of tickets. Wristbands will be despatched within 4 weeks of the event. Wristbands cannot be replaced. Family Tickets are not available to purchase online. Beautiful Music Join us for an evening of beautiful music when one of the best small choirs in the south west makes its debut visit to Highcliffe Castle on Wednesday 24th April at 7.30pm. The Orlando Singers is celebrating its 20th birthday this year with a very busy year, including singing in Westminster Abbey, Wells Cathedral and touring Malta. Based in Bournemouth, Dorset, with singers from Surrey to Somerset, The Orlando Singers is one of the UK’s best semiprofessional chamber choirs.
