The Bournemouth Directory Edition 8

Dear Bournemouth Residents! Wow what fantastic weather we have had for this time of year! The beaches were packed…in October! I am sure it will all get a bit cooler now, but I have to say I like the changing seasons, changing the clothes in the wardrobe and curling up by the fire with a good movie. Then having the summer... whenever it happens these days... to look forward to. We have just had a very busy weekend putting the magazines together and in between making an air raid shelter with our 7 year old son for a project at school! The whole class is really enjoying this topic and learning a lot. Hayden was horrified at the prospect of being evacuated and is fascinated with the ‘real story’ of a girl this happened to. “It really happened Mummy!” he exclaimed, “I wouldn’t like that!” I think he appreciates his ’luxury lifestyle’ of DS, Xbox, TV and Wii a little more now! So, back to the house and all that needs to be done… maybe it is time for the plumbing to be checked before the winter months settle in, a new carpet to impress the in-laws, a loft conversion to give you more space, new kitchen doors or maybe you want to give up smoking? Here in The Bournemouth Directory we have all manner of businesses and tradespeople to help you. They are all local to you so do give them a call. These calls are really appreciated and make all the difference. The lucky winner of the Mantovani DVD and two tickets for the performance at the Bournemouth Pavilion is Mr Gaines. Well done! This month the prize is tickets to see the Rat Pack Live. Good luck with that and have a great month of October! Best Wishes,
Debbie

101 Non-Emergency Number Goes Live in Dorset The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number went live on Monday 19th September 2011. Members of the public in Dorset must now ring 101 to contact Dorset Police for non-urgent enquiries. The new 1 0 1 num be r has re place d the previous non-emergency police number in Dorset of 01202 or 01305 222222. This new non-emergency number has gone live across all of the police forces in the south west and the 101 number is due to be available in all police force areas of England and Wales by the end of January 2012. Chief Superintendent Colin Searle, Communications and Contact Services Commander, said: “The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number is easy to remember and will be live across the whole country next year. “It is important that the public in Dorset know what they must dial 101 to contact police in Dorset for nonurgent business from now on. “The public should call 101 to report crime, to contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team, to provide us with information about crimes that have been committed or to make a general enquiry.
BD October 2011 page 6
“As ever, people should always dial 999 in an emergency — when life is in danger or a crime is in progress.” Calls to the 101 non-emergency number — from both landlines and mobile phones — cost 15 pence each call no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone.

A HEALTHY BODY IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK! There are many myths around the world of diets, eating and exercise. Do you ever feel like you are trying really hard to eat the right things and do the righ t th in gs and ju st not gettin g anywhere? Or worse, practically starving yourself and still putting ON weight? Luckily the expert team at Body in Motion has seen and heard it all before and just focus on what works instead of chasing the fads! Let’s start with three myths: 1. Low fat food is NOT good for fat loss — More and more people are buying low fat foods and yet the nation is getting fatter. 2. You can’t exercise off bad food — Just look at someone like Eddie Izzard who ran a marathon every day for 45 days and still did not have the physique of a Kenyan athlete. Or Martin Strell who swam the Amazon and was still rather large. 3. Reducing calories does not lose weight — Your body simply goes into starvation mode and hoards more fat.
So what is the answer? Focus on lean protein, vegetables and fruit. Minimise processed foods and white carbohydrates. The good news is there is no starvation or calorie cou nting involved!
Does it really work? I have tried everything..... The results speak for themselves: Andy G has lost 60lbs in just 14 weeks ( yes that’s correct-60lbs!). He hasn’t been hungry once and has not had sore muscles from over training once. Becca dropped 2 dress sizes for her wedding in 8 weeks and there are many more. Please go on our website to see the vid eos and testimon ials of h appy customers. By the way: Mark guarantees fat loss in 2 weeks…. Results happen FAST when you do the right things!
What now? Whether it is boot camp, kettle bells, one on one or group class, we have something to suit you. Contact us to book a FREE consultation with Mark, discuss your goals and get started today.

The countdown has begun... Insulation grants are coming to an end! Dorset Energy Advice Centre (DEAC) is a not for profit company which works with all 8 local authorities and Dorset County Council to promote the benefits of saving energy in the home and workplace. DEAC has most enquiries from the general public on home insulation and the grants available to help install these works. From autumn next year the Government is planning to abolish the grants and subsidies for home insulation and replace them with a householder loan scheme called ‘The Green Deal’. The Green Deal will be a loan which stays on the electricity bill, and is paid back at just under the rate of the savings made as a result of the measures being installed. The likely interest rate could be around 7-8% and there will probably be a cost to the survey of anything from £200-£500. DEAC are urging all Dorset residents to take advantage of insulation grants now, while they
are either free or heavily subsidised. This will ensure the full benefit of any savings on the fuel bills are made and not used to offset a loan. A loan on your property may make it harder to sell in the future. There are many grants that DEAC administer for the Councils and there are soon to be some new schemes which are specific to certain areas. If you would like to find out which type of grant you qualify for, or for any other energy saving advice please call: 0800 975 0166 Or Email: info@deac.co.uk Web: www.deac.co.uk

The countdown has begun! DEAC have assisted over 80,000 households in Dorset with home insulation grants. Does your IT value your business enough? Many companies under value the importance of their IT for a number of reasons. They either don’t have an an appointed person who’s dealing with ‘IT’ in the broadest sense without any real understanding of the bigger picture or no knowledge of exactly how to manage your IT and understand the businesses IT requirements, or simply the in-house 'tech' is overworked with fire fighting issues and no capacity to look at the business aspects. It’s common and ‘best practice’ to have an IT ‘road map’ and company IT policy which details a strategy which details which direction you’re headed and how to address every day issues like desktop support, hardware procurement, networking and infrastructure needs, backup and recovery and identifying how important your IT systems are towards the every day

The Rat Pack Live Starring Matt Monro Jnr They were the definition of cool during their Fifties and Sixties Vegas heyday – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr. Combining the full sound of big band swing with charisma, panache and swagger, the trio – collectively known as the Rat Pack – had attitude to spare. Rat Pack Live is a lavish production with real musical pedigree: • “Three dead ringers for Frank, Dean and Sammy” – The Stage Newspaper • Starring a musical director who’s worked with Sammy Davis Jnr • “This guy really is Sinatra” – Vegas legend Buddy Greco • As seen on the Royal Command Performance Joining the UK’s original Rat Pack concert show is Matt Monro Jnr. A hugely successful artiste in his own right, Matt performs many of his father’s much-loved songs – which included Walk Away, Portrait of my Love, My Kind of Girl, Softly as I Leave You, From Russia with Love and Yesterday.

October’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts!
Trees and Shrubs Planting of evergreens including conifers should be completed early this month. Plus prepare for deciduous trees and shrubs.
Climbers and Wall-Plants Prepare all climbers and wall plants by tying in long shoots and make sure they are secure. Examine all old supports change if needed.
Roses Shrubs, ramblers and climbers need to be firmly secure to prevent them from whipping about in the autumn winds and becoming damaged.
Borders and Beds All the summer bedding plants should be cleared by now. The space left can be planted with cheerful spring wall flowers, polyanthus and garden primroses all available in bright colours.
Bulbs and Corms If ground is in a workable condition finish the planting of lilies early this month. Where drainage is needed plant them on a layer of sharp sand.
Rock Gardens and Pools
Fruit If strawberries were not planted earlier there is still time, complete pruning of currants and gooseberries. New plants can be propagated from old wood.
Vegetables A start may be made with digging vacant ground, so it has as long as possible to weather during the winter, ready for raking down next spring.
Greenhouse and Frame An important task this month is removal of dirt and any shading that was painted or sprayed on the glass to give as much light as possible ready for spring.
House Plants As daylight decreases, light through the window is considerably reduced. Light loving plants would need to be moved accordingly. Remember to water less, just keep damp. Gather up falling leaves to stop decay. Any other debris remove from pools before they decay and foul the water, which is harmful to plant life and fish.
Lawns Raise height of cut on lawns to no less than 2 inches. This stops the light getting to the ground which encourages moss growth. Patch if haven’t already.

Purkiss, in a Temper, Burns His Old Axle
S
tanding in a glade in the New Forest is the famous ‘Rufus Stone’ a three-sided memorial about 4 ft high, marking the traditional spot where, on August 2nd 1100, King William II (‘Rufus’) was killed by an arrow. Was it an accident, or was it assassination? No one will ever know. It is one of history’s many unsolved mysteries. Sir Walter Tyrrel, one of the king’s hunting party, immediately fled the scene and spent the rest of his life abroad, fearing for his life as the prime suspect. Today’s ‘Rufus Stone’ is made of cast iron, with an account of the incident marked on each of the three sides. However, it’s a modern replacement of a succession of previous stones which have marked the spot over the centuries. And those memorial stones themselves were replacements of the old oak-tree, the ‘Rufus Oak’ which was reputed to have been on that site when Rufus met his fate.
BD October 2011 page 28
An old story, told by William of Malmesbsury, tells how Purkiss, an old charcoal burner in the New Forest, discovered the king’s body and transported it on his cart to Winchester cathedral. According to his dramatic account, the arrow was still sticking out of the king’s corpse, which bled all the way to Winchester. There’s a Blue Plaque in Bell Street, Romsey, to record the route old Purkiss took. The monks of Winchester cathedral were horrified to receive Rufus’s body, as the king was notoriously anti-Christian and homosexual into the bargain – something which was certainly not tolerated in those bygone days. They shovelled the body into the ground beneath one of the newlybuilt cathedral towers without any rite or ceremony. Seven years later that tower fell down! Obviously the wickedness of the Red King was to blame for the tower collapsing! Descendants of Purkiss lived in the forest for centuries after this

Don’t flush your money down the energy drain… Give your system the power! Imagine the water in your radiators, pipe work and boiler going around and around year in, year out. Over time, tiny deposits will build up in the water, affecting the efficiency of your boiler, the ability of your central heating pump to push the heated water around the system as well as the speed with which radiators get hot (or not!). These deposits will generally be a black sludge, (Magnite) that causes problems such as boiler noise, repeated pump failures or poor circulation and often all three! A Powerflush will remove all of the deposits within the system, clean all the internal pipe work and flush through the boiler. The results will be a quieter system, more efficient boiler, radiators hotter quicker and a significant saving on your heating bills.
