Dear Bournemouth residents, With our FANTASTIC increase in circulation and over 15,000 individual homes and businesses now receiving The Bournemouth Directory, all delivered by Royal Mail, we really are getting the names of local businesses to you! We do hope you enjoy reading and using our well loved, local publication. Nellie is the Dorset Directories campervan and is trying to take responsibility for Hayden’s welfare as you can read on pages 26 and 27. It seems to be working! We have also managed to book a holiday in April on the Greek island of Santorini! Some may remember that I fell in love with this island last year on our cruise with Mum and Dad, for Dad’s 80th Birthday. When I saw a bargain on the internet I couldn’t resist. We will be right on the volcanic Perissa beach, so I will certainly get to gaze at the magnificent waters again. Then in August we have booked a camping trip! Nellie can hardly contain herself and is really excited about taking us to Devon where Hayden will enter his first surf life saving competition in the sea. It is always good to have something to look forward to, don’t you think? For now it is work and sorting the house and garden out. There is quite a bit to do. Did you make lots of New Year’s resolutions and are still successfully carrying them out? I do hope so. The Dorset Ladies Luncheon Club meet once a month at the Marsham Court Hotel Bournemouth from October to April. The March Hare The sight of a brown Hare, poised for action at any moment, is a wonderful thing, and for many is something they’d like to tick off their wildlife bucket list. In the South West, a quarter of the estimated 800,000 population of Hares can be found. Here in Dorset we are blessed with a few hotspots for Hare watching, including Chesil Beach, Cranborne Chase and the Cerne Valley. If you are lucky enough to see one, the chances are it won’t stay around for long. With the ability to run up to speeds of 45mph these sprightly and athletic animals are well-equipped for survival in harsh habitats, which is often in the open, exposed to the elements. In addition to being the UK’s fastest land mammal, they also have near-360 degree vision. One thing Hares are well known for is their ‘boxing’ abilities during the breeding season. This display of aggression, which is usually females denying persistent partners, can be observed in spring and summer. The frenzied display is the reason they’ve earned their reputation ‘mad as a March hare’.
However, Hare numbers are sadly dwindling, with a 75% decline in their populations since the Second World War. There are many complex reasons for this decline, including intensification of agriculture and changes in the patterns of land use. Their ideal habitat is grassland and arable areas, and rather than burrowing like rabbits, they create shallow forms in the grass, and use woods, hedges or fields, where they rest during the day. However when disturbed they can be seen bounding across fields, using their powerful hind legs to propel them forwards, often in a zigzag pattern! Whilst Hares can be seen all year round, as they don’t hibernate, it is often easier to see them in the early morning and late evening this time of year, due to lack of foliage in the landscape. Whilst in times gone by it was considered ‘bad luck’ for a hare to cross your path, seeing a Hare is a rare and wonderful sight – just make sure you’re quick with your camera if you want to capture the moment. Coconut and lemon slices Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy these delicate sliced cakes.
INGREDIENTS
2 packets of shortbread biscuits (200g) 1 tin of condensed milk (400g) 2 cups of coconut 125g butter 1 finely grated lemon rind 3tbsp lemon juice 2 cups of icing sugar 30g butter
Butter a 20cm x 30cm tin. Crush the biscuits either with a processor or in a bag with a roller. Place the biscuits, coconut, lemon rind and condensed milk into a large bowl. Melt the butter and add to the bowl mixing well. Press the mixture into the buttered tray. In a clean bowl, sift the icing sugar and stir in the butter. Add the lemon juice gradually until the icing becomes smooth and spreadable. Spread the icing over the slice. Pop in the fridge and then cut into small squares. Store in the fridge and enjoy with a cup of tea!

LEWIS Cheap Trains, Drains & Automobiles Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel. • Free tank of fuel via extreme couponing trick. If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount. There’s a full list of retailers and more info at: www.morrisonsfuelsaver.co.uk. • Turn your heating down, but not off if you’re going away If it gets cold, no heating risks burst pipes. So much so that some insurers won’t cover you for damage if your home’s unoccupied for more than five days and you turned the heating off. The rule of thumb is keep it to a minimum 14 degrees. • Buying two tickets for one train journey can save you £100s Split ticketing makes about as much sense as Chewbacca, but it works. It’s where you buy tickets for a journey’s constituent parts separately to slash the price. It’s allowed by the conditions of carriage – the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. For example, a single from Manchester to Cornwall costs £158, but the train stops at Cheltenham Spa. Buy a £52 ticket from Manchester to Cheltenham Spa, then a £58 one from there to Cornwall and the total’s £110. That’s the same train, the same time – possibly even the same seat. As Justine tweeted me: “Genius - tickety split has just saved me £50, no effort, exact same journey.” • Cheap boiler cover - you don’t need to stick with your energy firm Boiler cover is a free market, yet energy firms like you to think you need to stick with them. You don’t. While British Gas charges £12/month, you may be able to get similar cover for as little as £6. My quick tips: a) Renters usually don’t need it, as their landlord’s likely responsible. Check.
b) Ensure you know what cover you need. Choose between boiler-only, the cheaper option that covers your boiler and its controls, or central heating cover, which includes full central heating cover on top (including radiators, pipes, etc). c) To find the cheapest, compare prices via uSwitch.com and add in Energyhelpline.com if you’ve time. • Get a year’s breakdown cover for £17. If your car has had trouble during the winter season, it can be costly to pay it back in the Spring. Thankfully, if you know what you’re doing you can get super cheap cover. There are four things you need to know: - If you’re renewing, haggle. 84% of AA and 76% of RAC customer who tried reported success. - If you’re new then for basic cover use a cashback site. A standard RAC policy is £28 online and an AA policy £35, but sites like Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco.com give around £10-£15 back so the effective cost to you is £18ish. This usually works, though do note the cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed. - If you have Tesco clubcard points you can swap them in for RAC cover, so £16 of vouchers gives you basic breakdown. - For full service, Autoaidbreakdown.co.uk is a pay and reclaim polcy for £42/year, which covers you and your spouse for home start, breakdown and onward travel. A local delivery firm is sent out, and you pay then send in receipts to get the cost back. • Do you know where your stopcock is? No nudge nudge wink wink needed. Everyone should know where their stopcock – mains water tap – is. Frozen pipe bursts create an average £4,000 of damage, made worse if you can’t find the off switch as your home floods. So be prepared. Under the kitchen sink’s a very common place. To locate yours, Thames Water has a helpful video at: thameswater.co.uk/help-and-advice/13526.htm • Can you find sub-£1/litre petrol? Petrol prices are now under £1/litre in some places, but the range is huge. Use Petrolprices.com to find your cheapest, nearest forecourt. The difference even within one post code is 10%. Girls’ golf is about to get rocking in Dorset! Girls’ golf is about to get rocking in Dorset with the Currently, national figures show that only 1% of golf club members are girls, with an average of just two launch of a campaign to inspire new players. The Dorset Directories Camper Van Oh boy did we had a fright a few weeks ago when Nellie found herself in snow near East Grinstead! After a day of being parked in the freezing cold she refused to move, or at least her engine did start but she screamed out in pain and gusts of smoke flew from her nostrils. (It is one way we women can make a point...) I wasn’t there and when Stephen called me to say he was awaiting the RAC man, I was worried. As you know Nellie certainly is not as young as she used to be, has done a lot of running around, and her arthritis can get her down. Would she pull through? Would she get back on that motorway? Well, amazingly she did. The belt around her power steering had slipped and once back in place she stopped yelling and the smoke diminished. Now can you believe it? As a result of this incident Nellie now has a friend, and one she is rather fond of. Stephen has bought himself a handsome car of steel, full of gusto and muscle (Nellie will have to watch herself). It is a Mazda RX8, silver and definitely has charm. “Mighty Rex” we have named him. The excuse for buying the car was to help Nellie. Ummmm... Stephen sold me well on that one. After all Nellie is getting on a bit and since I had started all those awful thoughts of “which home would we put her in, how would we tell her and how would she take it?” etc etc, it seemed a good solution all round. Nellie has now had a rest for a week in the garden but will still be taking us for many a trip here in the South. Phew... Like a lot of us older ladies, there is life in her yet! (Especially now she has Mighty Rex to share the garden with...)
Nellie with Mighty Rex in the gardem At the other end of the scale, something else we parents and grandparents worry about is how to keep the children off the computer for at least some of the time each day. Let’s face it we never had computers in our day and Nellie remembers many a good afternoon running around in the garden playing hide and seek, making a den with old blankets, climbing trees and otherwise being a nuisance to the neighbours with footballs landing in hedges and tennis balls banging continuously against garage doors. It doesn’t seem to happen like that these days. No, we have computers. In fact I often answer a question Hayden seems to ask only to find it isn’t me he is talking to at all, but is busily chatting away to his friends on Skype! Oh it is so different. Nellie worries about this but manages somehow to get Hayden out of the house. Hayden loves swimming and has been a member of “Swim Bournemouth” for a couple of years now. Nellie loves to take him to his sessions, up to 5 times a week in fact, and watch him glide through the water like a seal. Recently a friend from the club suggested Hayden try and get into

27 the Surf Life Saving Club at Branksome. Not to miss an opportunity, Nellie excitedly sold the idea to Hayden who was more than happy to give it a go. After all they swim in the sea in the summer! Well last week Nellie took us to our first Surf Life Saving Competitions. How exciting! It is all very new to us so we went along not knowing what to expect and told Hayden, who has had all of 4 lessons now, to do his best and enjoy himself. We absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was invigorating. We shouted so much and cheered with all our might that Nellie couldn’t toot her horn the next day, she was so hoarse. One race was so close and Hayden and his partner won! The aim was for the rescuer to paddle on a board to the ‘patient’, 25 metres away at the other end of the pool, and get the patient aboard so both could return as quickly as possible. Balancing on the board is a skill in itself, so paddling at full speed in unison with your partner takes some doing. Like all good Mums I have it on video… and am deafened by my own voice. (No change there then.) Another race involved the mannequins which for the ‘nippers’ ie the younger ones, were only half filled with water, so they are not so heavy. Heads in the water causing your poor patient to drown are disqualified which is probably just as well.

The mannequin race in the pool If Nellie was ever to fall in the water she would want to be able to breath. All good fun but such a great skill to have. The young teenagers who have been doing this for some time, are fully responsible for the younger ones and become their coaches so you can imagine the rapport between them all. Such great team work. It is so good to watch them all working together. One of the most difficult parts of the whole competition was the rope throwing one. Pulling in the rope so that it does not knot, throwing it with skill so it doesn’t coil back on itself or not quite reach your patient is really quite difficult. Observing the experienced adults do this, as opposed to the young nippers, there was no comparison. It was clear that this was a skill acquired with lots of practice! So Nellie has succeeded in getting Hayden even more out of the house and off his computer. She is very proud of herself. Hayden is learning a new skill and we are really pleased. Enjoyment all round and a win - win situation. Well done Nellie! It looks like a bloated beast and occasionally it handles like one. The Porsche Panamera’s swollen exterior is more obvious at the back of the car; it’s too bulbous to look athletic. But there is no disguising the ability of the vehicle. Two enormous tail pipes jut from the car’s stern like horizontal steel chimneys; these more than hint at the clout that the corpulent car is capable of serving up. The front of the Panamera is far more Porsche-like, with its sweeping curved bonnet and ever-so-slightly ‘hang-dog-eyed’ headlights. Approaching it from the front, or when peering down its long, wide, snout, its form starts to draw you in. Through its proportions alone, the Porsche Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment. It measures 1931mm (76.0in) in width and 1418mm (55.8in) in height, while its overall length is 4970mm (195.7in). And this particular oil-burner model can be recognised by the lettering ‘diesel’ on the front doors. Step inside, and the plush cabin reeks of cowhide. The sumptuous seating-for-four and lengthy legroom, both front and rear, provide the comfort you would expect from a car costing over £60,000. Indeed, every Panamera, has a high level of standard specification. This includes Porsche Active Suspension Management, which adapts handling to suit your preferred driving style. In ‘Normal’ mode the car delivers a blend of performance and comfort, and then there’s a ‘Sport’ setting where the setup is much firmer. The Porsche also comes with vivid Bi-Xenon headlights; parking sensors; tyre pressure monitoring; automatic dimming rear view mirrors; touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, as well as cruise control. In addition, the car is available with rear-wheel drive and uses a highly efficient eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
For the majority of time spent behind the portly Porsche’s wheel, it pleases when its hefty haunches launch the car forward with as much effort as it takes to throw a dart. The formidable engine chucks the monster from 0 to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds, and carries it to a top speed of 161 mph. The 3.0 litre six cylinder turbo diesel car is made for touring - that much is obvious. The 100 litre fuel tank and claimed 44.1 mpg will take you across a generous slice of the European continent without the need to stop for fuel. To give you an idea of its range in the UK, the German goliath is capable of taking four passengers from Lands End to Loch Ness without refuelling. Performance and low consumption are accompanied by smooth running and low emissions. An additional contributing factor is the auto start/stop function, which is de rigueur. Porsche has never suffered from a poor image. Sure, like most automakers, there have been tiny blips in its history, but nothing detrimental. The arrival of the Panamera Diesel has definitely polarised the opinion of the petrol-headed purists though. Many don’t see it as a ‘proper’ Porsche, and its styling certainly doesn’t achieve universal acclaim. That said; it’s an awesome car to go long distance travelling in with three other’s to accompany you. You’re also bound to get lots of looks – but not always for the right reason.

On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!
Jobs for March :-
• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!
