Humphries Kirk succeeds in recovering British deposits lost in 2008 Spanish property crash Leading Dorset and Somerset law firm, Humphries Kirk, is pleased to report its success in enabling British clients to recover deposits lost on new build apartments in Spain following the 2008 – 2009 property crash. Before the crash took place, hundreds of British people were signed up to buy new build apartments in high class residential areas and holiday complexes in Spain at an affordable price. Humphries Kirk has an international practice with correspondent lawyers throughout the European Union, as well as many other countries around the world, and was approached by Spanish lawyers to offer the service of seeking relevant compensation from the local banks. The firm was able to approach a number of British clients and offer to try to recover their deposits on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis, after an initial fee to check the strength of the case and pay the Spanish official fees.
James Selby Bennett, commercial partner at Humphries Kirk, said: “I used to work in Madrid and have some working familiarity with Spanish commercial and legal practices. I am very pleased that we have been able to achieve justice for our clients. They did not know that they had recourse to the local Spanish banks under the enlightened Spanish consumer protection scheme. We have been able to unlock this compensation for them, through our close links with our Spanish correspondents.” Humphries Kirk is able to offer legal support globally through its Humphries Kirk International Network (HKI) service, a unique group of legal and business advisors who have worked together over many years for the benefit of its respective clients in the area of international business.
It was revealed that under Spanish consumer protection law, the developers were required to take out an equivalent to a protection bond with the local community bank in the areas where the development was permitted. This clarified that the responsibility to repay deposits lost by investors sat with the local banks. Humphries Kirk is pleased to announce that the success rate of those who took up the offer is 100 per cent. British investors who thought they had lost their deposits and had given up trying to recover them have been compensated, and in some cases with interest on top.

Care South renews partnership with AFC Bournemouth for fifth year Care South is delighted to renew its partnership with AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust.
Cherries winger, Marc Pugh and Head of Community Sport Trust, Steve Cuss visited residents at Care South’s Fairlawn care home in Ferndown, where they also met with the charity’s Chief Executive, Simon Bird, to officially announce the continued partnership, which is now in its fifth year. The partnership with AFCB encourages staff and residents of Care South’s care homes and Home Care service clients to participate in activities where they can meet players, enjoy coffee mornings and become involved in walking football and stadium visits. Marc Pugh, an integral member of the AFCB squad and ambassador for the partnership, spoke to the residents about the incredible start to the 2018/19 season AFC Bournemouth has had. Head of the Community Sports Trust, Steve Cuss said: “Care South residents always give Marc a fantastic welcome. He is a huge supporter of this partnership, and that’s what makes him such a great ambassador. He and the Community Sports Trust team are looking forward to visiting as many residents as their schedule allows, and showing his football skills to the residents and seeing a few of theirs.”

Flock to Poole Harbour
January is traditionally a dark and dismal month, but for over-wintering birds, this is a busy time of year, and Poole Harbour is one place we can guarantee will be bursting with (bird) life. During late summer and autumn birds start arriving back onto the Brownsea Island lagoon to over-winter. The unique location of the lagoon means it provides shelter and food sources in abundance, but its shallow waters mean it’s also still accessible for birds when the rest of the harbour is under deeper water. It’s also a thoroughfare for birds flying from far flung corners of the globe, who use the lagoon to rest and eat before migrating to other winter habitats. In the past we’ve recorded rare sightings of the semipalmated sandpiper, and in October we were treated to a sighting of the small sanderling visiting from its arctic breeding grounds. A favourite and frequent visitor to the lagoon is the spoonbill. For many years the spoonbill flock sizes have been building, and in 2014 it peaked to the largest flock of spoonbills ever seen in Britain, with 49 birds recorded in one flock. and easily identifiable guests are large flocks of waders, particularly avocets, which are distinguishable by their long blue legs and curved bill, perfect for si�ing through the mud for fish. They breed in east Anglia, France and Germany but the number seen on the Brownsea Lagoon is of international importance, where 1,200 or more can be seen in the winter. The black-tailed godwit breed in Iceland but can be seen through the year on Brownsea Island, with up to 2,500 visiting in the winter to feed on worms found in the lagoon. A unique partnership between Dorset Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust and Birds of Poole Harbour has been set up to run boat trips around Poole Harbour during the winter months, so visitors can get a first-hand experience of the thousands of birds feeding and roosting on the Brownsea Island Lagoon, when the rest of the island is closed for winter. Your swimming journey can start with our Aqua Natal classes, following the birth you can move to one of our very popular Parent and Baby classes. We actively encourage both parents to take “baby” swimming, and currently have quite a lot of dads in our classes. Parent and Baby classes are a great opportunity for skin to skin contact with baby which helps in the bonding process. We have the license locally for Aqua Sensory and incorporate aqua sensory into all our Parent and Baby classes. “Aqua Sensory is a unique programme, which provides a rich mixture of sensory exploration and early developmental opportunities.” We also have specific Aqua Sensory classes where water offers a unique sensory world requiring closeness and trust that builds strong emotional bonds. Each lesson has specifically themed activities, developed with a key focus on early developmental skills. The programme is a “stimulation of all the senses” that combines movements, music and songs, signing and discovery play.

The next step in your swimming journey happens between 2.5yrs and 3yrs old when you join one of our non-swimmer classes, you will be in the water without Mum or Dad together with up to 4 other adventurous young swimmers. Most of our non-swimmer classes will have a teacher and an assistant to support you in gaining water confidence. Once you have mastered swimming 5m on your front and your back, your journey then progresses to other group lessons where we start to work on your stroke and stamina. Our Group lessons have a maximum of 5 swimmers and are aimed and delivering swimming lessons to meet the groups needs and the individual’s needs. We also offer One to One and Two to One Lessons for children who want or need it. Another step in your journey is the advanced swimming classes where you will work on stroke technique,

Naturally good...
ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.

Talbot Village Trust enables extension for MS Society Bournemouth Talbot Village Trust has donated a grant of £11,000 to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Bournemouth to fund the extension of its day centre.
The grant giving charity provided the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society with the funds required to construct a muchneeded extension onto the original Osborne Day Centre. The centre is used regularly as a meeting place for people with MS, their carers and volunteers. Members of the society also have access to physiotherapy, yoga and hairdressing facilities at the centre. The new extension has created the space for a private consulting room which is available to provide confidential one-to-one support. A disabled toilet has also been constructed within the extension, due to the growing number of people that use the centre on a weekly basis. Rod Slip, chairman of the MS Society Bournemouth, said: “We are so thankful to the Trust for choosing to donate to the centre and allow us to construct our extension. Before this project began we were restricted on the activities which we could host, but now we
have the extra space to strengthen our support services and activities offering.”
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “As a Trust we are always looking to support charities, big and small, that play an integral role in the community. It has been so interesting to learn about MS Society Bournemouth and the essential work they carry out for people with MS in Dorset.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the end of January 2019. On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew lettuces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
