AFC Bournemouth Cherries Community Fund gives help for those affected by domestic abuse Members of staff from a Women’s Refuge in Poole recently collected a cheque for £1,000 from AFC Bournemouth Cherries Community Fund to support children who are impacted by domestic abuse. The refuge, which is run by local housing and support provider BCHA, plans to use the donation to fund fun activities and equipment to assist in delivering therapeutic support for children in its services, both within the refuge and through outreach work. Laura Argent, Project Leader of BCHA’s Poole Domestic Abuse Project, said, “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of AFC Bournemouth Cherries Community Fund, which will significantly help us support the children within our services.” The refuge has 18 self-contained flats, of which 17 flats are dedicated for women
and one flat is dedicated for a male. All flats accommodate children. Laura, added, “From January to October this year, we have already had 111 referrals for refuge space at Poole. 15 of these referrals were for men and 96 referrals were for females, while there were also 137 children included within these referrals. “Our service aims to provide therapeutic support to children who have been affected by domestic abuse. We provide a safe environment so they can open up about their experiences, we then provide them with tools and skills to help them overcome the abuse and thrive in the future. This donation from AFC Bournemouth Cherries Community Fund is extremely positive for the service and will enhance the support we deliver by allowing us to provide more therapeutic equipment and activities for the children.”

Celebrity Interview:
Ken Dodd By Tim Saunders
“Never live in the past even if it’s cheaper,” quips Sir Ken Dodd, who celebrated his landmark 90th birthday in November. He reveals that he will continue to do two gigs every week and 100 a year. “I used to do 400.” “Always look to the future,” he recommends. “My toenails are 90 but my brain is 21. When you wake up in the morning at 90 you thank God for allowing you to live so long and for giving you such an adventurous life. I’m very grateful.” A self-confessed chatterbox the nonagenarian still introduces his audiences to six new gags per show. “If two or three get a laugh you’re doing very well,” admits Ken, who returns to the stage for the sheer thrill of the experience. “You can never predict an audience. You have to learn to read them very very quickly. There is a lot of creativity in being a comedian.” The king of the one-liners looks forward to doing shows “because I love playing an audience”. “Some men go fishing and some men play snooker, I’m stage struck, I just love doing shows; it’s my life.” Knighted earlier in the year by Prince William at Buckingham Palace has added to Ken’s happiness. “It hasn’t changed me at all - I am the same Ken Dodd that I always was; I still put the same underpants on everyday… well not the same underpants. It is delightful. My family and friends all think it is wonderful. What I am very pleased about is that they have given this recognition to someone from show business; my type of show business; I am a variety entertainer. It really means a variety of skills. I’m here to fly the flag.” Full to bursting with infectious enthusiasm and a zest for life, he says: “I’d like to live to be 190 because there are so many things to see, so many people to meet, so many things I’d like to do and places to visit.”
Another ambition is for a Ken Dodd Archive because with his love for the written word, he adores books. “I get told off; if I buy another book my fine lady threatens that she will have me put away! I must have 100,000 books. I have a house and two little cottages and they’re all full of them. I have a passion for buying books particularly anything to do with show business. Some of which I have read and some that I plan to read and some that I will never read.” As a youngster he was offered a junior reporter’s job at the Liverpool Evening Express but a career in journalism was not as appealing as comedy. Aged 14, Ken was intrigued to discover how a joke was produced. “A joke has a surprise ending; a tag we call it. You are drawn into psychology and you start reading all the books on it by the philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Freud. Now Freud did very well with his jokes. He had a book called Jokes and their Relationship to the Unconscious. Freud came up with this wonderful formula: the acquisition of the psychic economy. Unfortunately, Freud never played Saturday night at the Empire, which makes a big difference believe me! Practically every psychiatrist and every psychologist that drew breath from Freud, Schopenhauer - there’s a whole list - they all have a different theory about why we laugh and it’s a fascinating and obsessive kind of study.” He has lived at Oak House, Knotty Ash (built in 1782) all his life. Passed down from his grandmother, he has enhanced the interior and plans to do the same with the garden.. Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

Talking about Wildlife...
Keep Dorset blue... 14 million people tuned into the first episode of Blue Planet II, making it the most watched television show in 2017, enthralling the public with tales from the ‘big blue’ ocean. Marine wildlife is often hard to appreciate as we can’t always see it, but this programme has given us all a new understanding of the complex and beautiful habitats and marine species living beneath the waves. Another much talked about issue it focussed on, was that of marine litter, one of the biggest threats to marine animals. It is estimated that around the world 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles are killed each year as a result of litter. Dorset is home to a great variety of marine life, with regular visits from grey seals, semiresident dolphins and even passing basking sharks, but the amount of litter found in our seas has turned the ocean into a very dangerous place for them. Our seas and beaches are awash with plastic toys, food packaging, lighters, balloons and fishing paraphernalia, which often takes years to decompose. Seabirds for example, might spot something shiny and think its food, which if eaten becomes impacted in
their stomachs and can cause death. Larger marine animals can also risk ingestion and entanglement from litter. The good news is that everyone can make a difference by making a few small changes. Reducing single use plastics is one big step in the right direction. In the recent budget announcements, a tax on takeaway boxes is being considered to reduce the amount of single-use plastic which could end up in the sea. Many of us could start doing something about it now by making different purchasing decisions – for example using a re-fillable water bottle rather than a single-use plastic bottle. Dorset Wildlife Trust has designed its very own refill bottle, available in our online shop at www.dorsetwildifetrust.org. uk/shop. Even if you have just two minutes, take a stroll along the beach and pick up some litter as you go, as part of the #twominutebeachclean. Interactive ‘skills for life’ charity Safewise looks for new talent during its 20th birthday year Following a strategic review, Dorset and Wiltshire based safety charity SafeWise is advertising four new roles to start in 2018.
SafeWise runs safety centres in Weymouth and Bournemouth, with a third opening in Swindon and Wiltshire in 2019. These centres deliver interactive ‘skills for life’ education in full size realistic settings including streets with working pedestrian crossings, home and travel scenarios, countryside and beach. New Chief Executive Rob Hattersley said: ‘After nearly 20 years of successful safety education in Dorset, we are looking to the future. As well as a third centre in Swindon and Wiltshire, we are re-focusing on our core delivery of ‘skills for life’ education in our full size safety villages. We’ll be developing new bespoke programmes for primary and secondary students, young people away from home for the first time, newcomers to the UK, older people, learners with special needs, and parents and carers of the under fives.’

Talbot Village Trust helps Linwood School create outdoor learning area for pupils Talbot Village Trust has presented Linwood School with more than £34,000 to create an outdoor learning area for its pupils.
Linwood School is a day special school for children and young people aged 3-19 who have a comprehensive range of special educational needs and disabilities. The donation from the grant giving charity has enabled the school to transform an unused piece of land into a new outdoor learning and play area featuring sensory equipment. As a special school, Linwood’s pupils need to be able to climb, communicate with voices and sounds, experience tactile objects and use their bodies to bounce, swing and balance. Julie Jeanes, headteacher of Linwood School, said that the new outdoor area enables this, with climbing equipment including roll over bars, ‘teacup twisters’ and balancing play equipment. There are also puzzles, mirrors, mazes and ‘talking flowers’ that project voices and sounds.
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “It is clear to see that our funding has enhanced the sensory learning at Linwood School, and this is something which we are passionate about as a trust.
“We look forward to seeing how the outdoor learning area continues to benefit pupils for years to come.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in spring next year. Tehidy Holiday Park, Cornwall By Tim Saunders – www.travelwriter.biz
Tehidy is a small village in Cornwall, near Portreath, St Ives and the coast. It is a magnificent part of the world and a memorable family holiday awaits you at Tehidy Holiday Park. “I have ploughed everything I have made back into the holiday park,” explains director Richard Barnes, who purchased the five-acre site 10 years ago and runs it with his family. “It was pretty run down then and I set about updating it, even adding tarmac roads.” We speak during the height of the holiday season when he has 350 guests staying on site: camping, static caravans and in his selection of self-catering holiday cottages. “We keep being asked for larger cottages so we are renovating another one at the moment which will have all the bells and whistles.” It is a value for money offering and guests even benefit from wi-fi. There’s a play area and the site has been awarded a David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award, which acknowledges the mix of flower beds, Cornish hedges, trees, hedgerows, a small orchard, wildlife areas and wild flowers, scattered with wild strawberries for little fingers to find. We stay in Lavender Cottage, a two-bed semidetached stone built bungalow, with a slate roof. It provides comfortable accommodation for four. There are five in the Saunders family but this doesn’t pose a problem because our children quite happily share a room. Harriett (6) and Heidi (4) each have their own bed while Henry (1) sleeps in his travel cot, which fits in between their beds without a problem. Caroline and I take the master bedroom with its double bed and doors onto the patio. “The county’s finest beaches are just minutes away,” says Richard. He is absolutely right. The first one we visit is at Portreath, 10 minutes away. It’s an overcast day but that doesn’t matter, we enjoy the whole morning on the beach, paddling
and making sandcastles and then have a packed lunch. We have to work our day around Henry’s sleep patterns and after lunch he likes a nap so most days we all pile into the car and head on road trips taking in St Ives and Penzance. At St Ives the weather takes a turn for the worse and Harriett and I have left our coats at the ranch but we brave it. We enjoy a walk around the seaside town and even make some pebble sculptures on the beach. We are all thoroughly sodden but it doesn’t matter we are having a great time. It’s such an arty place with so much character from its narrow roads and historic architecture. Penzance is bigger and home to national retailers but still a good place to visit. We discover the best beach of all on our last day. It’s Porthtowan. A beautiful sandy beach and some great waves. We spend the whole day at Porthtowan, paddling, messing about in the sand and watching the lifeguards manage a huge crowd of surfers. There’s also a play area and some shops so an ideal day out for the young family. For those of us not hardy enough to swim in the sea, Kernow Hydro, a wonderful warm saltwater pool can be found at Portreath. Owner, Fiona established it a couple of years ago and has just celebrated paying off her £50,000 loan. The children especially enjoy splashing around in the warm water. After our swim we sit in the café and tuck into some of the best pasties we have eaten. A great experience. As always Cornwall creates some wonderful memories. The Dorset Directories Camper Van January - notorious for looking back… then looking forward to the new year ahead of us. Nellie, our delightful Dorset Directories campervan, loves to see what she achieved in the months gone by and then start to plan for the future. Her purpose as we know, with her rather large thighs, big silvery grin and roaring energy is to create family fun. So where did she take us last year? Well it all started at Monkey World! On a freezing winter morning Nellie had this terrific idea to visit the playful primates in the Purbecks. What a wonderful time we had, though we did not stay all day due to the very low temperatures and flurries of snow. I was doing the driving (“all by my own”, as Hayden used to say when he was very young…) and Nellie’s snow-mode was a great help to say the least! Very brave of me, and Nellie was rather proud. Monkey World is a great place to visit for the young and old alike, so ideal for the generations to have some special time together. Our next trip was to The Wimborne Town Football Club! Nellie picked a wonderful sunny, if a little cold day for this, and what an exciting day it was. Sport is so important for many reasons. Yes, it keeps us fit (Nellie could learn from that) and healthy, but even more important is the

Nellie adopts an Orangutan at Monkey World! community atmosphere. Local Clubs are run by dedicated individuals who spend their own time and money to help local residents have fun. There are many good people on this planet of ours. Wimborne Town Football Club, otherwise known as “The Magpies”, is no exception and Nellie tooted her horn as the Magpies came to a victorious 2-0 win. It was all about history at Stonehenge. Nellie was blown away by that trip. Well actually she was sincerely hoping she wouldn’t be taken away by aliens, or men in long flowing robes. Her imagination ran riot! These henges (prehistoric monuments consisting of a circle of stone or wooden uprights) are well known in the Wiltshire area, drawing visitors from all over the world and are truly inspiring. ‘Us English’ love our ancestry and our historic monuments. Nothing delights us more than looking back in time and imagining how things were. The museum was fascinating too with its ancient skeletons and Neolithic pots. A great day enjoyed by all. Variety is the spice of life and Nellie loves new experiences so fishing with Grandad was a real treat. All packed up with coffee, tea, sandwiches, crisps, biscuits and

27 maggots (for the fish of course!) and off we skipped to Hordle Lakes in the New Forest. Me, Nellie and Grandma were the servants for the day, providing the cuppas, burgers and generally helping wherever needed. The men caught loads of fish, so much so that Nellie learned how to “mug” the fish by literally dropping maggots into their mouths. Not for everyone but Grandad, Hayden and Nellie were all smiles! Our next adventure was unfortunately not with Nellie as she is too fat to fly. Those heavy thighs you know. Disney in Florida was amazing. The new Avatar ride at Animal Kingdom was spectacular and one Nellie would have loved. We really enjoyed showing her all the photos… I am sure she didn’t get fed up of hearing all about it. I bet you have never had that experience? Camping! Nellie loves camping. On our next trip we defied the weather and Nellie took us to Norden Farm near Corfe Castle in the Purbecks. Despite the summers’ torrential rains that had fallen, we enjoyed ourselves, fishing in the small lake, dining out, playing snakes and ladders in the awning, walks around the castle and generally being British. Bacon sandwiches for breakfast, raincoats on and smiles all round. Norden Farm is a great place to stay. More camping in Cornwall with an exciting excursion to Treamble Valley where Hayden competed in the National Surf Life Saving Competition, this time in the Youth Group and much more of a challenge for him. Nellie at Rockley Park!
Nellie learns to fish at Hordle Lakes! held on tight to her skirts as she watched the competitors fighting against the tide and those crashing waves. From Cornwall in the South, to Hull in the North for a family wedding! Nellie was packed with wellies and wedding outfits. She certainly loves to travel. Not long after that was a visit to the Centenary Caravan Club in the New Forest which was a more leisurely end to a rather hectic time. The beautiful English sunshine did us proud and sunbathing was on the menu. Relief. Nellie’s engine purred. After all that running around and exhilaration Nellie persuaded Grandma and Grandad to buy a family caravan on Rockley Park. Nellie is delighted. She can visit, watch Hayden swim in the sea, Grandma and Grandad can stay whenever they want and we can relax on the decking with a cuppa. Result. Nellie ended the year presenting awards to the very talented Horticultural Society winners and then finally she met Father Christmas at the fete! What a wonderful year she has had. Nellie is planning another year of excitement for us. She is getting on a bit now (aren’t we all…) being well over 200,000 km, but is still very young at heart and is determined to enjoy herself despite any aches and pains. Life for Nellie is for living to the full. She would like to wish you a really Happy New Year. May you smile lots in 2018! By Debbie Corney

Tastes so good... Bone Broth After the excesses of Christmas and the New Year Cheer, a good dose of bone broth is the perfect antidote. You can make up a hefty batch of this in one go and add it to soups, casseroles or simply drink it from a mug for perfect gut-healing health. This recipe is not your regular stock - it’s packed with minerals and healing properties that will kick start your new year diet.
1. Ingredients 4lbs beef or chicken bones 2. 12 cups water 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 3. 1 medium onion, roughly chopped 4. 3 large carrots, chopped 5. 2 leeks, chopped 3 bay leaves 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon black peppercorns

Preheat oven to 200c and line a baking sheet with foil. Place the bones on the sheet and roast for 40 minutes. Flip them halfway through. Once they’re cooked, break them down and place in a large stockpot. Cover with the water and vinegar and allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Add the chopped vegetables and add to the stockpot. Bring to a rolling boil and then lower to a simmer. For the first 2-3 hours make sure you skim off any foamy layer that develops on the top and discard. For beef bone broth simmer for 48 hours, for chicken 24 hours. Allow to cool slightly and strain. Transfer the broth to an air�ght container and refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight. This will allow the fat to rise to the top and solidify. Scrape the fat off the top with a spoon. This will leave you with a gela�nous bone broth when cold. Store in an air�ght mason jar or freeze un�l ready to use then slowly warm the broth over a low heat or drop straight into soups and casseroles.

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

The letters ‘G’ and ‘T’ are used far too often on cars. And, yes, I’m referring to a grand tourer rather than a gin and tonic. Some automakers think that by sticking a ‘GT’ badge on the boot lid it makes their product instantly irresistible. Many are wrong about that. But McLaren isn’t. Indeed, the 570GT is so far from wrong, it’s untrue. McLaren’s 570GT is one of the best cars the British firm makes and it’s undeniably the most multitalented sports car, too. You can probably tell I was utterly blown away with the 570GT when I tested it on British bitumen recently. Fundamentally, McLaren has taken the awesome 570S and has injected it with an extra dose of civility. The result is the 570GT – a machine that’s as refined as possible without swapping for a smaller power unit and additional seats. The 570GT even looks like the 570S, but there are some major differences between the models. The latter’s flying buttresses have been replaced by curved bodywork that comprises a glass hatch. There’s a respectable 220-litres of load space under there, meaning the 570GT has a genuine practical edge to it. The car also has a glass roof that makes the cabin airy and full of mood-enhancing light. The engine, normally on display in the McLaren 570S, is tastefully concealed under a leather floor in the 570GT. While, inside, the car gets extra soundproofing, soft-close doors and electric heated seats. If that’s not enough to start justifying those letters ‘G’ and ‘T’, the 570GT is equipped with a more hushed exhaust system and softer suspension. The steering is also milder than the 570S’. These changes make the McLaren 570GT a car you could use every day. The ride is pliable enough to make our pothole-ridden roads bearable, and motorway cruising din
is subdued enough so that your ears don’t bleed. But, just because you could use the GT on a daily basis doesn’t mean this is a lacklustre McLaren. Oh no. In every other way, the 570GT does everything else a full-fat McLaren does. And, most importantly, it looks one of the meanest, sexiest cars out there. It’s a major head-turner, that’s for sure. With just a quick stab of the 570GT’s starter button, the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 lump barks into life. Depress the gas pedal and the increase of velocity is hard-hitting, due to the 570 horses under the lid. And snapping up and down the cogs via the paddle-mounted gears-shifters is a real smileinducer. Zero to 62mph is done in an insanely rapid 3.4 seconds, while the top speed is a licence-losing 204mph. Regardless of the additional luxuries added to the GT, this McLaren’s cabin stays broadly the same as in the 570S’. It’s a work of genius in contemporary sports car interior design and a long way from the chaotic button-fest of the Ferrari 488 or the unemotional ambience in Porsche’s 911 Turbo. You sit near to the ground but erect in the 570GT, so visibility is very good. And, as mentioned earlier, it’s comfortable enough to be used as a real-world form of transport. While the alterations from the 570S to GT could be seen as fairly minor, they make a substantial difference to the McLaren driving experience. The British sports car maker has constructed a machine that is as calm as possible, without kicking any of the theatre to the kerb..
