What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude!

Vigilant Town Centre Rangers Respond Rapidly to Life-Threatening Emergency Whilst patrolling the streets on one busy June weekend, the on-duty team of Bournemouth Town Centre BID Rangers received a radio call from the town centre camera operators. Asking for assistance, they informed them that a woman appeared to be having a medical episode under the Lucerne Arch on Old Christchurch Road. Responding quickly to the call, Town Centre Bid Rangers Dave Dowling and Rosie Cook immediately headed to the scene. Dorset Police and Bournemouth Borough Council jointly operate the town centre cameras, and often contact the Town Centre BID Rangers to act as first responders and to be their ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground. Established in 2012, the Bournemouth Town Centre BID Rangers work in conjunction with the Council, Police, CCTV and Shopwatch Scheme to help make the town centre a safer place. Dave and Rosie arrived at the incident and began to assist the woman who had fallen and hit her head. A member of the public had already called for an ambulance however it soon became clear that sadly the woman was exhibiting symptoms of substance abuse. After around 5 minutes the woman began to lose consciousness. Town Centre Ranger, Dave Dowling said: “On duty in the town centre, we were able to respond quickly to the call from the town cameras and help the woman as her condition declined. All our
Rangers receive First Aid at Work Training and go on regular courses.’’ Whilst Dave was monitoring the woman, he observed a decline in her breathing and began chest compressions. The ambulance then arrived, and after receiving assistance the woman began to regain consciousness and was taken away by the ambulance crew. Bob Carter, Head Ranger comments: “This was the first incident of this type we have seen in three years. I am really proud of our Rangers and commend them for calmly controlling the situation over the space of an hour until expert medical professionals arrived.’’ Following the incident, the Bournemouth Town Centre BID received praise from holidaymaker and eye-witness to the event, Ms Lloyd from Wales. “Your Rangers do a wonderful job in Bournemouth’s town centre and they probably saved the girls life.’’ For further information about the Bournemouth Town Centre BID, visit www.towncentrebid.co.uk.

Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support
At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. You can find out more about all 41 sites across England by visiting www. wildlifetrusts.org/mcz, and for more information about the proposal’s Dorset sites, please visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust. org.uk/mczs where you can also become a friend of the MCZ’s and get regular updates and information on the outcome of the public consultation for the third tranche. We’re also pleased to have recently re-opened the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre at Kimmeridge, next to one of the best rockpooling sites in Dorset. The centre has a new artificial rockpool, new information panels, and interactive virtual seabed, a new shop, and lots of events throughout the summer. The story behind the production... Taken from the Charles Dickens Novel, this Musical follows the lives of French and English people, all caught up in the terror and rage that marked the beginning of the French revolution. Two men in love with the same woman. Two cities swept up in revolution. One last chance for a man to redeem his wasted life and change the world. This musical focusses on the love triangle between young beauty Lucie Manette, French aristocrat Charles Darnay and drunken English lawyer, Sydney Carton. Follow the Manette family as they struggle with the wonder and tragedy that

What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we’re no longer able to make our own decisions. But should that moment come, it’ll affect every part of your life – from your home to your finances to your medical care. It’s shocking to realise that as many as 1 in 3 over the age of 65 will suffer dementia, but of course, an unexpected accident can strike anytime. So setting up a Power of Attorney is the sensible solution. If you haven’t made the right preparations, it’s your family and friends who’ll be left to sort everything out, as they try to take best care of you. Innovative Coastal BID Campaign Comes Second in Prestigious National Awards The Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) has been presented with the runner-up award for the ‘Best Digital Highstreet Scheme’ at the Association of Town and City Management Awards. With hundreds of entries from across the country considered, second place represents a huge achievement for the Coastal BID and its Go Bournemouth Coast augmented reality app. The ATCM Awards showcase best practice in town and city management across the UK and Ireland.

Introduced in 2017, the Coastal BID ‘Go Bournemouth Coast’ app has brought colourful augmented reality characters to each of Bournemouth’s coastal trading districts. This has included virtual elves for Christmas, dogs for the Chinese New Year and bunnies for Easter. Aiming to increase footfall, it has challenged families to explore, enter local businesses, take selfies with the characters and upload them to social media to enter exciting prize competitions. To date, Go Bournemouth Coast has involved over 200 participating businesses and actively engaged thousands of residents and visitors.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

27 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. Bournemouth’s Hotel for Cancer Sufferers Celebrates 7th Anniversary Not-for-profit holiday retreat for cancer sufferers, The Grove Hotel, has celebrated its seventh-year anniversary with a special tea party attended by the Mayor of Bournemouth. Over the past seven years, The Grove Hotel has been providing a muchneeded holiday for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, alongside their families and carers. Opened in 2011 and situated on the East Cliff, The Grove Hotel is run by the local charity Macmillan Caring Locally. Celebrating the anniversary, the party highlighted the hotel’s role in providing wonderful holidays for cancer sufferers from the local community and across the country. With first-class support, the hotel gives guests an opportunity to spend precious time together with their carers and loved ones. The day’s festivities started in the hotel’s restaurant with tea, sandwiches and freshly baked scones served to visitors. The Mayor of Bournemouth Cllr Derek Borthwick was also in attendance. He was given a tour around the award-winning establishment and was present to cut the birthday cake. The party continued in the garden, with a live ukulele band and a prize raffle to raise much-needed funds for the hotel. Cllr Derek Borthwick, the Mayor of Bournemouth, said: “It was a real pleasure to see first-hand The Grove Hotel’s award-winning facilities. The Grove is doing a splendid job for cancer sufferers, who can go there on holiday with the assurance that their often complex needs will be met. Happy birthday to The Grove and I hope they will be operating for many years to come.”
Brenden Howard, the General Manager of The Grove Hotel, said: “The Grove’s seventh birthday party was a great opportunity to reflect over what we have accomplished in the past seven years. It was also a great occasion to thank our amazing team, guests and friends. I would like to give a special thanks to the Mayor and everyone who joined the festivities.” The Grove Hotel is one of only a few hotels of its kind in the country and is specifically equipped to meet the needs of their special guests. A number of bedrooms have electric recliner beds and emergency cords; bathrooms and showers have stools and handrails, and there is full wheelchair access. There is also a nurse on emergency call 24 hours a day. Dead-heading and Seed collecting
You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.
When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the
