Dear Littledown & Pokesdown, Wow! What fantastic weather we have had this year, except of course the flash flooding in some areas. We have been lucky enough to avoid this. Stephen, myself and our ‘roaming reporter’ son, Hayden (age 10), had a brilliant day at The New Forest Show. The show jumping horses were just magnificent, the Heavy Horses stood so proud and confident, in all their glory and the guys on the motocross bikes were riveting! Improving the way we care for older people Services for older people are being transformed at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital through a combination of staff engagement, strengthened leadership and redesigning how we care for older people. More importantly, it’s the result of patient and carer feedback. We have also been working with Professor David Oliver who is PresidentElect of the British Geriatrics Society. Here are some of the ways we are improving the hospital experience for our older patients: Improving care for patients with dementia Ward 26 has been renovated to improve the environment and quality of care for patients who have dementia. The bays, reception area and facilities have received design changes that make wards less confusing for those with dementia. A communal area has been created with comfortable chairs and a screen showing appropriate images, giving patients the opportunity to socialise. Each bay has a flower theme with distinctive images on the entrance doors, helping to orientate patients back to their own bay and bed.
r developing a compassionate care training programme to improve the staff culture and patient experience. r an older persons’ nurse practitioner is working on ward 3 to support the needs of older people. The ethos of the ward is to provide ongoing transitional care and rehabilitation for medically stable patients, while waiting for intensive support from social and community health services, to support a timely discharge. r JNplemented a specialist training programme to strengthen the skills of our doctors, nurses and therapy workers to manage older people’s needs. We have also: r recruited rehabilitation healthcare assistants to provide interim care in patients’ own homes while they are awaiting long term packages of care. r developed ambulatory (day care or outpatient) care clinics for older people providing rapid access to consultant geriatricians, therapists and nurses. The clinics provide an alternative to being admitted to hospital. r introduced the Quality Mark for Elder Friendly Hospital Wards on all older people wards and the stroke unit, to ensure a continuous focus on the care provided to older people. This is our commitment to achieve high quality of care for all older people. Andrew Williams, Consultant Geriatrician, said “I am extremely proud of the improvements made over recent months. We are beginning to develop services that can be compared against national best practice. I am excited about the future as we aspire to become a centre of excellence for older people’s health care.”

We now have a short stay admissions ward. Patients are supported by designated social workers, discharge planning key workers and experienced therapists. This has been developed through a range of patient feedback forums and strong leadership - critical to providing safe, compassionate care. Celebrate marine wildlife! The world’s oceans cover approximately 70% of the planet’s surface, supporting an amazing array of life, with thousands of different species and habitats. The British coastline is also rich and colourful with habitats from rocky shores to sea grass meadows, teeming with valuable fish stock and species such as basking sharks, dolphins, grey seals and puffins. Here in Dorset we have a spectacular range of marine species; Poole Bay is the home to the rare Couch’s goby, Chesil Beach is inhabited by one of our most glamorous soft-corals, the pink sea fan, and South Dorset hosts an area of mixed seabed habitat, to mention but a few.
Diversity of life is one of the most valuable and fascinating things about the marine environment. Unfortunately, marine wildlife all over the world has come under constant pressure – mainly due to human activities. Overfishing and marine litter are amongst the biggest threats, and it is estimated that 100,000 marine mammals

and turtles and one million seabirds are killed every year by litter. It is therefore vital that everyone do their part to help safeguard our coastal environment and the marine ecosystems. Small steps such as making sure that household waste and plastic are properly disposed of or recycled, never using the toilet as a bin, and by reducing unnecessary packaging all go a long way. Seashore is a wonderful place to explore at any time, and to celebrate UK’s marine wildlife the Wildlife Trusts are organising the annual National Marine Week, which this year runs from Saturday July 26 to Sunday August 10. Dorset Wildlife Trust is providing a range activities, including dolphin watching, The Big Wild Chesil Event for the whole family, rock pooling and an exhibition on marine giants. Do you or anyone you know suffer with sight problems? Sight loss can happen overnight, to anyone, at any age. Fortunately, a small, local charity offers its services to anyone who may experience this: BSVI (Bournemouth Society for the Visually Impaired) is believed to be the oldest independent charity in Bournemouth, founded in 1911, helping people both within its Centre in Moordown and out in the community. Members are encouraged to actively participate in a programme of social activities including musical events, Arts & Crafts, Quizzes, Bowls, Curling, Skittles, Bingo and outings. There is also a Tuesday morning Drop in Café, Tuesday evening Archery Club (recently featured on both BBC and ITV local news programmes) and a Wednesday afternoon Cards Club. BSVI runs a Resource Centre (open Monday to Friday 10am–1pm) where specialist equipment to assist those with sight or hearing impairments can be demonstrated and purchased. The Community Services team includes a professional Counsellor providing Emotional Support for people of all ages who may be experiencing emotional, psychological or relationship difficulties arising from sight loss. This service is also offered to families and carers.
BSVI has a dedicated Support Worker who visits people at home to support them to remain living independently within the Community. A Befriending Service also assists with reading, form filling and general everyday living. Chief Exec Philip explains, ‘the BSVI ethos is to encourage people to demonstrate what they can do rather than dwelling on what they can’t! Members have said that BSVI is “the nearest thing they have got to family.” A gentleman who recently lost his sight claims “whilst I recognise you cannot give me my sight back, you have restored my dignity and self-respect.”’ BSVI couldn’t provide any of its services without its team of wonderful volunteers – if anyone has any spare time, please call us – just a few hours per week of your time could greatly enhance a visually impaired person’s life. They're desperate for switchers - paying cashback on bills, 5% savings, or just bunging you cold hard cash. Yet just 2% of people have switched in the last year. Unless you're 100% happy with your bank, check now if you can gain. The contest has stretched far beyond traditional banks. Even M&S wants to be, well, the M&S of banking. It’s just launched its first fees-free account. In fact so much so, it’s willing to bribe you with a £100 voucher if you switch. So here’s what you need to know about the best fee-free bank accounts…

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Having had a few trips in Nellie now, staying overnight, we realised that for any longer trips we would need more space. We have spent many hours looking at awnings for campervans! All have their pros and cons and in the end we chose the Kombi Ex. It aligns parallel with the van, so when you come out of Nellie you walk into the living space. Behind that are two bedrooms, so they are out of the way and always there, which during the day can be useful for storing things you are not using so the ‘living room’ is fully available. At the front there is a covered area which means if it is slightly raining you can sit under it and still be outside, and you can leave shoes there which again are protected to some degree from the weather. I couldn’t believe it… After all those hours of looking, choosing and finally deciding, we picked up the phone only to be told, “Oh they have stopped producing those now, so we don’t have any!” If you know me, when I get determined, wild horses will not stop me, so after many phone calls we did indeed find a site which had the Kombi Ex in stock. We

Nellie, suited and booted, with Kombi now have what we wanted! Intention. Here’s a photo of Nellie all suited and booted with her new awning. There are so many local places where we can camp near to where we live. It is excellent as it means we can pick Hayden up from school on a Friday and go away for the weekend, arriving at our destination just 30 minutes, if not less, later! This gives us more time to actually enjoy ourselves, and worry much less about the traffic. Norden Farm is great. It is situated just outside of Corfe Castle. There are lots of fields, really good washing facilities, a lovely camp shop which has recently been renovated and has all you would need for a family camp. There is also a farm house and a restaurant. It is perfect. There are peacocks, farm animals and an amazing fishing pond with, we are told, 25 pound carp in it. It is free to fish for campers. I have to say my Dad would love it here. We did go fishing and Stephen did his best with Hayden, but Grandad was sorely missed and we left with no catch much to Hayden’s chagrin. We picked a fantastic weekend for weather. The sun was shining. The plot we had was just right and gave us lots of space for the
23 boys to play. We went along with Martin, a friend of ours and his two boys. Ryan, the eldest friend stayed in the tent with Hayden, whilst Stephen and I had the luxury of Nellie’s bed. Martin was in a tent with Sammy. If you are not used to the delightful sound of birds singing and the countryside sounds of the night, that amazing chorus can turn into an awful, perpetual screech. Unfortunately Martin had this problem and Sammy kept waking up too, so poor Martin did suffer a bit that night. It is a good idea for earplugs… ironically! I love the sounds of the night so didn’t have this problem and the boys in our tent slept very soundly. Saturday was a great day for games. We held our own ‘Norden Olympics’! Actually this was a very clever ploy on my part to sit along the side line and referee, basically giving orders, so that I didn’t have to run around! It must be the teacher in me… I had bought a few outdoor games especially for the occasion. It is surprising these days what you can get, for good value. Hours of fun at very little cost really. We had two teams and the boys ran around all afternoon. I wonder if this is why they ALL slept really well that night? We had a delicious meal at the farmhouse in the evening. Five hungry boys after all that exercise but I am not sure what my excuse was… There is a good variety of food, it is

The newly refurbished farm shop really well presented and the whole place is very family orientated. Having said that it would also be a lovely place to have a romantic meal for two. Very cosy. There are comfortable settees set in a snug immediately behind the restaurant where you can enjoy an aperitif or an after meal drink. Norden House is also a great location for weddings and parties. It is totally out of the way, so you can party into the wee small hours of the morning. A marquee or two can be erected in the countryside garden and photos would be idyllic. Just call and ask Matthew for details. He will be more than happy to show you around the gardens, the restaurant and the lovely guest house where you can stay. So Nellie was more than happy with her stay at Norden Farm and I know we will definitely visit again. We highly recommend the campsite, the farm shop with its local produce, the restaurant and the guest house. The owners should be very proud. They have grown from strength to strength. We are a club of retired & semi-retired gentlemen who meet on the second Thursday of each month with a speaker followed by lunch. In September the talk is ‘Frank Sinatra’ by Chris Walker. On Thursday 21st August we are holding an A�ernoon Tea with partners invited. Our meetings are held at The Liston Hotel, 5 Wollstonecraft Road, Boscombe. You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.
When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the seeds and grow your own
Try it with plants with quite large seeds to start with, like Marigolds or try Aquilega (Grandmother’s Bonnets) or Foxgloves.
They may not grow exactly the same in character and quality as the original plants but it’s great fun to watch the results of your efforts spring into life.

If I had over £35,000 I would happily buy the 2.0 TFSI quattro S line version of the Audi Q5. You see, the styling of the Q5, with its coupe-like roof line and wrap-around tailgate, has been subtly refreshed. The design of the headlights has been changed, and the sparkling xenon units are now framed by new-look LED daytime running lights that form a continuous band surrounding more of the lens. Inside, the Audi Q5 is pure understated refinement. The controls are trimmed in chrome, and the narrow panels of the centre console are finished in high-gloss black. The hi-tech central media component, MMI navigation plus, has very few buttons, so you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to work out how to use it. Other touches such as heated seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel make the Q5 a dream to drive. The car is as solidly made as an oak table and yet seems as light as a feather. There’s a reason for this: the bonnet and tailgate are crafted from aluminium, while the car’s structural elements integrate ultra-highstrength steels; they reduce weight and improve crash safety. The result is that the Q5 handles like an executive saloon and takes off like a bat out of hell when you dab the accelerator. Indeed, the performance totally matches the looks of this Germanic road warrior: top speed is 138mph and the 0-62mph sprint is done in a satisfying 7.1 seconds. Another explanation for this awesome performance is the updated Q5’s TFSI petrol engine, which combines direct fuel injection, while the eight-speed tiptronic automatic powers the 2.0 TFSI Quattro up the cogs
effortlessly. The chassis of the latest Audi Q5 also adds a great dollop of refinement and comfort, thanks to changes to the spring, shock absorber and anti-roll bar settings. The new power steering system gives you a better feel for the road too. The Q5 driving experience is further enhanced when the optional Audi drive select system is specified. Audi drive select lets you vary the operating characteristics of the throttle pedal, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the degree of power steering assistance and the operation of the automatic air conditioning system via four modes, including an efficiency mode. In addition, three optional components can also be controlled by the Audi drive select system if they are fitted. These include adaptive cruise control, damper control and dynamic steering. During higher speed cornering, it compensates for understeer and oversteer by intervening with slight steering pulses. I’m not saying you’ll ever get sick of driving the Q5, but when you’ve had enough of all that commuting to work and driving the kids to school malarkey, the Audi will thrill you off road. It may look a bit bling but it actually performs well on rugged terrain. Its maximum climbing angle is 31 degrees and its approach and departure angles are each 25 degrees. And you won’t rip anything off the Q5’s underbelly because the vehicle’s ground clearance measures 20 cm. This is truly a motor for everyone – but you’ll have to have a decent bank balance, or a boss who’s nice enough to put this on the company car list to drive one.
