Hello Residents of Bournemouth! Well we have had a real treat with all the Olympics recently. The Opening Ceremony was a real triumph of our British history. Quite a spectacular performance. Well done to all those fantastic volunteers! In the Games themselves I have loved watching the gymnastics which I have to say is my favourite. I remember seeing these as a teenager and being in complete awe. I have to say, I still feel the same! The swimming, diving and watersports too, they are all great to watch. At the time of this writing we still have a week to go so fingers crossed we get some Gold medals!! NEVER SEEN BEFORE NIGHT AIR PROGRAMME AT THIS YEAR’S AIR FESTIVAL Presenting Night Air at the Piers Air Festival organisers are finalising the finishing touches to what promises to be an incredible Night Air programme, jam-packed with stunning dusk air performances, jumping Tigers, and top-notch entertainment in the Lower Gardens. And the jewel in the Night Air crown and brand new to 2012, is ‘Night Air Between the Piers’ live music programme. 2012 sees not one but two Corona stages providing live music, one at Boscombe Pier presented by Commercial Radio Partner Wave105, and the other at Bournemouth Pier, presented by Alex Dyke. Unlike anything seen before at the Festival or indeed staged in the resort, Corona Music Stage at Boscombe, in conjunction with Wave105, will be ticketed on the Friday and Saturday. Jon Weaver Air Festival Director said: “We have worked closely with our Commercial Radio Partner Wave105 to bring an incredible programme to Boscombe and equally so with Alex Dyke at the Bournemouth Pier Corona Music stage. I can honestly say - we are going to rock the 2012 Festival!” Jon Brooks, Wave 105’s Sales, Marketing and Operations Director, added: “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with the Bournemouth Air Festival this year. This event is one of the largest of its kind and has positioned itself as one of the most attended annual events on the south coast. “As well as providing coverage of the event, Wave 105 will be involved heavily with the Night Air programme. There are some big announcements to come and we aim to make the series of entertainment even bigger and better than ever before.”

Returning for a fabulous dusk spectacular in not one but two Night Air displays will be the remarkable SWIP Team Twister Duo. Returning to display both at night and sunset, it’s a stunning sight and as are the breathtaking Tiger Freefall Parachute Display Team, set to jump from an incredible 10,000ft with glow sticks and smoke trails. Family favourite the Saturday night fireworks will be twice the bang, boom and colour with an extra display on Friday night, to mark the Jon Egging Red Ball. Both displays sponsored by The Oceanarium and will take place at 10pm. Night Air fun and entertainment continues in the award-winning Lower Gardens from 5pm. Don’t miss the Royal Marines Combat Recruitment Team perform their combat displays, Dodgy Totty’s quirky outdoor theatre, Barney Bay’s circus skills, shows from the Puppetree Company and the dangerous displays of FLAME with their flame fire shows! There will be plenty of music in the Lower Gardens bandstand from dynamic five-piece band The Amy Mayes Band, as well as Jackson 3 and The Sidemen.

All ears for over 7 years Founded in 2005 Kellear Hearing is part of a family run business that has had offices in Bargates since 1970. After a career in the Royal Army Medical Corps spanning nearly 30 years Paul Kelly the practice director was used to the effects of loud noises and was looking for a new challenge. In January 2000 Paul undertook his Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser training and in 2001 gained his license to practice. Paul gained his Fellowship of the British Society Of Hearing Aid Audiologists in 2006 and is a designated conciliator for their national Customer Care Scheme which deals with disputes and complaints from patients. In 2009 Paul decided to take on two new challenges that would add to his expertise and knowledge and after 2 years of distance learning he was awarded his Foundation Degree in Audiology from Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge whilst the second in 2011 saw him gaining his Diploma in Clinical Ear Care for Hearing Aid Audiologists (CECHAA) which enables him to deal with and remove wax in ears.

Westbourne slimmers are going for Olympic gold by walking Pier to Pier Westbourne slimmers have completed their bit to celebrate Olympic fever by participating in a Pier to Pier walk. The slimmers, who all attend the Westbourne 9.30am & 7.00pm Slimming World groups, committed to the Olympic challenge after being shocked by a national survey that revealed that three out of four people (75 per cent) never take part in competitive activity and more than half (55 per cent) never take part in non-competitive activity either. The groups, which have lost an incredible 143st between them since the beginning of the year, raised money for the NSPCC as part of Slimming World’s Miles for SMILES campaign, which aims to motivate thousands of slimmers to become more active while raising money for charity at the same time. The campaign launches on 23 July and runs for three weeks until 12 August. Slimming World Consultants Barbara & Rhonda for the Westbourne groups say “Before we lost weight most of us never d id an y exercis e. How ev er, afte r transforming our lives by losing weight we now know anything is possible with the support of people around you and we can’t wait to get started on this challenge during the Olympics! “The best thing about the walk is that we’re just normal people who are looking to get more active while losing weight. We’re not super-fit and certainly none of us are going to be giving Usain Bolt a run for his money, but we’re working

together to make a healthier future for ourselves and others in Westbourne which is what the Olympic legacy should be all about. That we got to do it while raising money for charity at the same time was a real privilege. “Taking part in this walk shows how motivating being part of a group can be. What to do in your Garden in August Well, so far it’s been a bit of a disappointing Summer, with really sunny days being few and far between. I think it’s safe to say that living in the U.K. one has to learn to grab good garden days when they come along. Some things you can do in your garden this month include: • Keep an eye open for any Enjoy the beauty of sunflowers in summer areas of bare soil in your garden and mulch them to aid in water retention and the suppression of weeds. Care must be taken though not to cover up seedlings or to allow a build up of mulch against the stems of plants, specially if you are using grass cuttings. • If you have herbs in your garden then now is a good time to start picking some to dry for the winter months ahead. • You can start looking at and buying Spring bulbs now and make plans for where you want to put them. • Go around your garden and harvest any seed heads that are ready. It is best to collect them in brown paper bags or envelopes and label them straight away so you don’t forget what they are. • Check roses for any leaves that have Blackspot or Rust, pick these off and dispose of them in the bin not the compost heap. • If Narcissi bulbs are on your bulb shopping list you might want to consider planting at least some as soon as they arrive. If you do this you will have flowers by Christmas to brighten your garden. • Check for and remove any suckers (a secondary shoot growing from the root or base) from roses, shrubs or trees.

• It goes with out saying that any hanging baskets that are not in a
position to benefit from rainfall need to be checked and watered regularly. An idea I’ve had is to take photos of your garden – and this would be a project for throughout the year – to plot and plan, not only what flowers and plants work well in different areas but also what could use being moved or replaced. If there is a spot that lacks colour or structure it would be more obvious when the photographs are put together with a plan of your garden. If you have drafting or drawing skills perhaps a large piece of paper (butcher’s paper is good as it comes in a roll and can be torn to size) can be used to draw a basic plan of your garden and the photos attached. Do you have a water butt in your garden? It used to be a fairly standard fixture in gardens when I was a child, but I’m not sure they are making the come back that they should. If you don’t have one yet why not look around for one of the right size and price range for your needs. Chances are good that as soon as you’ve got it rigged up it will stop raining.
