Charity football match to raise funds for John Thornton YAF Custom Creations are proud to be supporting a charity football match being held to raise fund for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. Jo, James and Simon from Custom Creations said, “As a family run business, we put a lot of emphasis on building trusting relationships with everyone we work with and within our local community. “We use local family businesses to supply our materials and services, which helps us deliver on quality and enables us to develop the most important relationship of all – the one with our customers. As all our furniture is made in our workshop to our customer’s requirements, James develops this relationship during his first design visit which follows through to the installation. Over 18 years ago James joined the Air Cadets and was mentored by John Thornton, and has never forgotten what an inspiration he was to all the cadets. So we are delighted to sponsor this football match and support this inspirational charity, started by John’s family, whose work shows the true benefits of positive relationships.”

The AFC Bournemouth Legends vs Armed Forces XI Charity Football on 6 May 2019 at Wimborne Town Football Club is raising funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers

Foundation. A charity based in Ferndown directly supporting young people from the local area. The game will feature some of the true greats from AFC Bournemouth’s recent history (including Eddie Howe and Steve Fletcher) taking on a team of serving soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, and as such it is certain to be a great spectacle and a fiercely competitive match! With live music, food stalls, a licensed bar, and a half-time penalty shootout tournament there really will be something for everyone on the day! There will also be the chance to purchase a mascot opportunity for younger members of the family, which will include photos on the pitch with the teams prior to kick off. The match wouldn’t be possible without the support of Willo (John Williams) and Viv, who have signed up an impressive team of AFC Bournemouth Legends. Willo actually presented an end of season trophy to the young John Thornton and it is poignant that the family have a photo of the two of them together. Mayors Mark Launch of Not-for-profit Café to Aid Mixed-Ability Adults Friday 8th March saw the launch of Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop, a not-for-profit café at Birds Hill Nursing Home, attended by local VIPs, including the Mayor of Bournemouth, the Mayor of Poole and AFC Bournemouth. Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop, a not-for-profit café run by Crumbs and funded by Luxurycare Group, welcomed a range of VIPs and Patrons to the launch of the café on Friday 8th March. The café, which is based at Birds Hill Nursing Home, focuses on helping their mixed-ability trainees achieve life skills and professional development, with all profits being invested back in to the charity. The launch of Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop was well-attended by patrons of Crumbs and Luxurycare Group, as well as local VIPs. The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Gabriel and the Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Borthwick were both present for the launch of the café. Crumbs is the official Club Staff Charity of AFC Bournemouth who also had representatives present. Poole Mayor, Cllr Gabriel, gave a speech to attendees about the brand-new café. Speaking about the effect the café will have on the local area, The Mayor of Poole expressed how the café will offer a community-orientated experience for people who visit the café. Cllr Gabriel said: “Colin’s Nest is a great addition to Poole. The cafés’ aim to unite people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds to socialise over the traditional past time of tea, coffee and a slice of cake – is an admirable one and a fantastic community project.” Colin’s Nest is now open for all, with thanks to Luxurycare Group which fully funded the refurbishment of the café which took 5 months
to complete. Luxurycare Group provided tables, chairs and all the furnishings and equipment needed for Colin’s Nest to get started. Luxurycare Group Founder, Kevin Gunputh, said: “To see so many people at the launch is a great compliment to Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop. From speaking with attendees, it was very encouraging to hear the positive feedback on the café and its facilities. I am so glad that Luxurycare Group is a part of it.” Representatives from Lloyds Bank Foundation were also present at the launch. Lloyds Bank Foundation awarded Crumbs a grant of £74,950 to enable the charity to employ a full-time Work Experience Supervisor over the next three years. Ursula Boardman, Training Services Manager of Crumbs, said: “This is a fantastic start to Colin’s Nest, which will be a key hub for training and development. It was very kind of all the VIPs, Patrons and Trustees to attend the event and I hope they will visit us again soon.” Colin’s Nest is located at 25 Birds Hill Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2GJ and opens between 10am – 2pm, serving light lunches, cakes, teas, coffees, paninis and more. Get Dorset Buzzing!
This spring, Dorset Wildlife Trust is embarking on its biggest ever campaign to get over 2,000 people in Dorset doing at least one thing to help pollinators in their garden, and help Get Dorset Buzzing. But, why are we so concerned? It’s widely known that bees are in decline, yet they are arguably one of the most important insect groups on earth, helping to carry out the process of pollination which is responsible for one in three mouthfuls of food we eat, including chocolate, coffee and strawberries. But it’s not just bees that you will see flitting between flowers in your garden; butterflies, hoverflies, moths and some beetles also carry out the pollination process, so it’s important that we create much needed space for them all to thrive. One of the main reasons for the decline of bees and other pollinators is loss of habitat. Wildflower meadows used to provide prime pollinator habitat, but we’ve lost 97% of them since the 1930s. The good news is that there’s something we

can do to help. Our gardens and local green spaces are potential mini nature reserves, so if we can provide the space and the food, they will come! Charity Providing Free Audiobook Memberships in Dorset Whether it’s discovering a new story or revisiting a classic, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book. Studies have shown that reading can improve wellbeing and improve relationships with others, as well as reducing the symptoms of depression or dementia.* But, when you find reading print or holding a book difficult, how can you keep reading? Audiobooks may have the answer. Listening to an audiobook removes the difficulty in decoding words, holding up a book, or turning pages, so you can relax and escape into another world. Listening Books is a national UK charity who provide an audiobook library service for anyone who finds that an illness, disability, specific learning difficulty or mental health condition affects reading print or holding books. They currently have free memberships available for anyone living in Dorset who would like to join
the service, but may not be able to cover the standard membership fees of between £20 and £45 per year. There’s no financial proof needed, but they do ask for a selfdeclaration that this cost would be a barrier to joining. Their library has over 8,000 audiobooks, including bestselling authors for all ages like J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Lee Child, David Walliams, Jojo Moyes, Jeff Kinney, and many more! Plus, they record exclusive educational titles to support the National Curriculum in their professional studios, so they aren’t available anywhere else. Audiobooks are available to download through an app available for tablets or smartphones, to stream online, or sent direct through the letterbox on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees. Dazzle & The Art of Defence This major new exhibition contextualises the artist Norman Wilkinson’s First World War ‘Dazzle’ schemes of disruptive camouflage against the wider contribution of the arts and creative industries to the defence of Britain in wartime. In 1917 when U-Boat attacks threatened to knock Britain out of the war, Wilkinson persuaded the Admiralty that patterns painted on the side of the ships would confuse U-Boat commanders as to the direction and speed of the vessels. Bournemouth & District Concert Band BDCB is a friendly community wind band that rehearses and performs in the Bournemouth area. We have members from all over the area – Weymouth, Salisbury, Southampton, and everywhere in between! Members range in age from 14 to 80+ years. The Adventures of Daichi
The Dorset Directories Camper Van “Daichi, The Dashing Dude” has finally made it! The NEW Dorset Directories Campervan has travelled across barren land and rough seas to get here. All the way from Japan, just to be with us. We love him! He is pearly white and is still wearing his posh kimono. Nellie had long skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, whereas Daichi likes to think he is rather sophisticated, debonair, and has an eye for the girl vans. In fact, “The Dashing Dude” as we have nicknamed him, is a play on words as he believes he is good looking, stylish and fashionable. It is all part of his charm. He also loves to run around and have fun. So, dashing he is, and otherwise known as “Dash” to his friends. Daichi is his official Japanese name, (dai) meaning “big, great” combined with (chi) meaning “wisdom, intellect”. As Daichi is full of himself and a little over confident, this seems rather appropriate. He even speaks Japanese when we switch on his purring, seductive engine. “Ha Dor!” and other words I have yet to discover the meaning of, he expels in a rather high pitched, very cute voice. (Don’t tell him I

Daichi gets the thumbs up! said that, boys do not like it.) We hope you like reading about his exploits and antics as he whisks us to exciting places around England and particularly here on the Southern Coast. Here’s to having some family fun… Our first trip was to Portland just along the coast from Weymouth. We had never been there before, and boy were we lucky with the weather. Dash was extremely happy. So were we. We climbed all the 165 muscle tasking steps up the Portland Bill lighthouse. What views from the top! Currently there is the amazing huge magnifying lamp which shines across the English Channel to warn our ships at sea of potential danger. The lamp will soon be replaced by a more modern system of LED lights. Sad really, but times move on as we all know too well. The majestic lighthouse demanding attention on the clifftop also has that eerie foghorn sound which haunts the waves in times of fog. There have indeed been a massive 113 shipwrecks along this coast, due to its shallow reefs and the strong Portland tidal race. Daichi decided to keep his nifty wheels firmly fixed on the solid ground.

27 A meal overlooking the crystal blue sea was a well-deserved treat after all that climbing. The café was a welcome sight. We ate outside! Portland of course is famous for its Portland Stone. Dash, knowing what boys are like and having empathy with Hayden our 15 year old active teenager arranged a “Geo Cache” hunt for us to do. Geo Caching is a modern-day treasure hunt. There are hundreds of walks you can find online. Some are still free, but there is now a small charge of around £20 for the year for the keener walkers. It is a fun way to follow coordinates and eventually find a box (the treasure!). The stones enroute, carved by artists, were quite amazing. A Falling man, chairs, hearths, octopus, bear, a whale and lots more. My favourite was the mythical Portland Dog Beast, the Roy Dog. Carved by Damien Briggs, this beast has fiery eyes, one green, one red and it was said that he lived in the Cave Hole where he would drag any travellers passing by, into its watery hideout. Brrr…. It even has the eyes of its victims embedded into its stony fur. Daichi is beginning to wonder about us Brits… We love our legends don’t we. Another way to explore our incredible homeland are Treasure Trails. Again, available online to buy at just £6.99

The Roy Dog in Tout Quarry Park per walk. Daichi chose the Pirates Graveyard one for us. (Is he trying to tell us something?). This was an intriguing walk along the coast and through the graveyard with skull and crossbones engraved in the stones. Contrary to popular belief, these are not pirates’ graveyards, but just images to ward off the evil spirits in the afterlife. The cove we passed, Church Ope, was gorgeous. We would love to go back there. There are stunning views from all over Portland. It really is a fantastic place to visit. It has seen busier times, with the Naval Base and the famous 18 mile long Chesil Beach where the American troops embarked on their journey to Nazi occupied France in the second World War. My Dad aged 83 told me that he, his Mum and sister regularly travelled to Portland all the way from Hull to see his Dad who was stationed there in the Navy. He remembered a day when a German plane was flying down the coast, being fired at by our anti-aircraft guns from the beach. The exploding shells got closer and closer, until the plane dived and escaped! Today it is a gorgeous stretch of pebbled beach with crashing waves and wonderful sunsets. Daichi is ecstatic to be here with us. He thoroughly enjoyed his first trip and is very excited about where he will transport us to next… where will that be? By Debbie Corney

Boscombe High Street Spring Clean gets underway The paving stones on Boscombe precinct are set to be returned to their former glory with a deep clean, funded by Bournemouth Borough Council, working in collaboration with Bournemouth Coastal BID.
The precinct has so much to offer visitors, including the bi-weekly fresh market. However, it’s in need of some rejuvenating to make it more welcoming for visitors from surrounding areas.
As part of their ongoing plans to enhance the appearance of Boscombe precinct, Bournemouth Borough Council and Bournemouth Coastal BID have been working together to restore the original aesthetic of the precinct’s paving stones.
“The precinct is in the heart of the community and I am keen to see the improvements this spring clean will make to the fantastic paving stones. We are optimistic that visitors and businesses alike will be wowed by its rich colours, various shapes and patterns!”
The works have been funded by Bournemouth Council and organised by the Coastal BID. Following a trial of specialised hot washing equipment in Boscombe last year, the deep clean initiative will now return the paving stones back to their original colours of yellow and red, revealing their intricate shapes and patterns. The technology is to be provided by Exterius, a family run service provider, which specialises in outdoor cleaning technologies. The company estimates that the works will be completed over 6 nightshifts, working from 10 pm to 6 am to minimise disruption to local businesses and shoppers. The spring clean will also include power washing benches and bins, floral troughs and the renowned police box on the precinct, with the aim of presenting Boscombe’s precinct as an attractive, safe and clean environment.
Councillor Jane Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration & Public Health Bournemouth Borough Council, said: “We have placed a renewed focus on improving the look and feel of Boscombe’s high street in recent years and are pleased to give this Spring Clean initiative the go ahead. Having provided the necessary funding, we would like to express our gratitude to the BID for organising and sourcing the specialist cleaning contractor.’’ “Working together we will ensure Boscombe is looking at its best, ready for the busy season ahead.’’ For more information on Boscombe precinct’s spring clean, visit: www.coastalbid.co.uk

East Cliff Rotary Raises Over £1,500 for Crumbs Charity Last month the East Cliff Rotary Club Events Team organised a major charity event, raising over £1,500 for local Bournemouth charity, The Crumbs Project. The Bournemouth based charity works with adults who suffer from mental health issues, learning disabilities and stabilized addiction, helping them to learn new skills and gain greater personal independence. Trainees are supported by the Crumbs Team to achieve recognized qualifications in catering, administration and housekeeping, and where appropriate on to paid or voluntary work placements. East Cliff Rotary is supporting The Crumbs Project as one of its main charitable activities for this year and this event saw guests enjoy an evening of entertainment and fine dining at Urban Reef Boscombe. The event was kindly sponsored by Kitchen Elegance of Wimborne. The evening was much more than just the food and wine with entertainment by Matt Black, who provided a unique mix of music and comedy. The generous donation of over £1,500 raised at the event will enable The Crumbs Project to purchase a new state-of-the-art food mixer for Crumbs’ catering training facility in
Bournemouth. Crumbs’ Operations Manager, Leanne Miller and Food Services Manager, Erika Sloper attended the fundraising evening and were presented with a cheque from East Cliff Rotary President, Keith Randall. Commenting on the Rotary’s fundraising efforts Erika said; “Thank you to East Cliff Rotary for organizing a fabulous evening in support of The Crumbs Project. Their generous donation will enable us to purchase a brand-new food mixer for our trainees to create some delicious recipes and progress their catering skills.” Keith Randall commented; “We are delighted to be able to help The Crumbs Project and support the valuable work they do with vulnerable adults in our community.”

Forest Holme mark 25th anniversary with Secret Garden Party at Upton Country Park Forest Holme Hospice has announced details of the biggest ball in the charity’s history to mark its 25th Anniversary this year. The Secret Garden Party will be taking place during Hospice Awareness Month in the beautiful surroundings of the Walled Garden at Upton Country Park on Saturday 8th June. Tickets for this very special event will include a Welcome Drink, delicious 3-course meal, with 1/2 bottle of wine, plus entertainment from Chic and Nile Rogers tribute band Le Freak. Forest Holme Hospice opened its doors in 1994 and since then has provided individually tailored quality care and support to around 1,000 adults each year across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck, with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s, heart disease and respiratory illness.
Paul Tucker, Fundraising Manager at Forest Holme, said, “2019 marks 25 years since Friends of Forest Holme - as it was known then - was set up to raise funds for the new specialist palliative care unit. “Since then, donations from supporters have helped the hospice to care for around 20,000 adults and their families and the charity has grown to meet the increasing demand for the hospice services. “Due to it being a special year we wanted to put on a unique event to not only mark the anniversary but also to vital funds so that we can continue to be here for future patients and their families during the most difficult time of their lives.” Tickets are £85 per person (£850 for a table of 10) and can be purchased from the fundraising office or over the phone – 01202 670644. Jobs for April :-
• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Naturally good... Brown butter and beer braised kale with cranberries and pecans
Ingredients for 4 2 bunches of kale 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 120ml beer of your choice 60ml chicken stock 1tbsp reduced sugar dried cranberries (this is optional) 3 tbsp. roasted chopped pecans Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
I absolutely love kale. It’s packed with flavour and nutrients and it’s incredibly quick and easy to cook. Braising kale in beer and brown butter gives the finished dish a really nice nutty flavor and the quick method of cooking ensures that the kale retains its vibrant green colour. 1. First prepare the kale by washing it and then cutting out the stem. It is important to cut out the center stem because it can be tough and chewy. Once you have removed the stems, quickly shred the kale by rolling up the leaves into a cylinder and roughly slicing them. Set to one side. 2. In a large frying pan or sauté pan place two tablespoons of butter and cook on a medium heat until starting to turn a light brown colour. At this stage quickly add the beer and chicken stock and turn up the heat to high. Bring to the boil and then add the kale. 3. Cook the kale for approximately 3 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the kale is nicely glazed. Add the chopped pecans and seasoning to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with the dried cranberries. Chef’s tip: Make sure that the liquid is boiling and the heat is on high before adding the kale, you don’t want to slow cook it because it can lose its vibrant green color if it is stewed for too long.
