Hello Bournemouth! What fantastic weather we have had. It is so good to be able to go out and about for walks easily. How many of you have had early barbecues also? That is a great excuse to get together with family and friends and chill out a bit. Love it! The only problem is the rain, we do need it, so do be a little bit more careful with the use of water. This month as always there are lots of trades people and services to help you around the house, in the garden and for you personally. Messing about in the harbour! Greenslade Pleasure Boats is a family run business established in 1970. The first boat was the Eva May (named after Matthew Greenslade’s grandmother) and it was built in the family back yard which eventually became their boatyard. Built by hand by Matthew’s father, (Rusty) Roy Greenslade, little may he have know just how far it would go. Matthew was just a teenager when he and his dad built their second boat 10 years later in the same back yard. She was called the PammyAnn (named after Matthew’s mother). What had started out as a family man’s dream has now developed into a well established and respected business in Poole providing a service to the National Trust, local conservation companies, Corporate companies, local businesses, The Scouts & Brownies, schools... the list goes on!! Matthew and Fiona also take a very keen interest in supporting local schools, charities and much needed sports clubs for young people by way of sponsorship. This year they have decided to start an annual Free charity draw, 30 charities were invited to enter the draw and the Sheriff of Poole Councillor, Carol Evans, drew the winner, which was WELDMAR HOSPICECARE TRUST. The prize is the use of one of the passenger boats given free of charge to be used for fundraising. Two representatives Katie Slade & Jonathan Panton received the prize on behalf of the Trust and were delighted. Katie said that they had never done any fundraising on a boat before and she was really looking forward to organising the Event which will hopefully raise much needed funds for the 12 Weldmar Nurses that do an absolutely amazing job covering Dorchester, the Purbecks and parts of Poole. These nurses are frequently confused with the MacMillan nurses who do the same job but cover a different area. The Weldmar team need to be

recognised in their own right as they rely on 70% of their funding from fund raising and donations. Weldmar Hospicecare Trust offer palliative care and respite for adults and children in our communities and are most deserving of our help & support. Strange premonitions about The Titanic We’re already being reminded of the sinking of The Titanic, but April sees the actual anniversary day – 15th April, 1912 at 2.20 hrs – when this historic tragedy occurred. There are so many articles, films, documentaries, memorabilia, etc., but one weird fact may well be ignored: that there were an astonishing number of premonitions by many people - all convinced, as The Titanic set sail from Southampton, that the trip would end in disaster. One passenger, an American Colonel Archibald Gracie, must have prayed as he realised his danger: and his wife, in bed in New York, woke up suddenly hearing a voice say ‘On your knees and pray.’ She got out of bed, opened a prayer book and her eyes fell on the words, ‘For those in peril on the sea.’ She realised that her husband was in danger and lay awake, convinced that something terrible was happening. A happier premonition was of a New York woman who had a nightmare in which she saw her mother in a crowded boat in the middle of the ocean. Her husband comforted her by saying that this was ridiculous, as her mother was safe in London. The next day, she heard of this disaster, and read that one of the survivors was indeed her mother. Later, the mother confirmed that she was in a perilously swaying lifeboat just at the time her daughter had the nightmare. She was making a surprise visit to see her.

Many similar stories could be told – but two of the weirdest must be told here. The first concerns an American, Morgan Robertson, a sailor-turned-writer of sea stories. He liked to get into a writing mood by having his study laid out like a ship’s cabin. In 1898 – fourteen years before the Titanic disaster, he was in this study, drifting into a kind of writingtrance, and he ‘saw’ a huge ship looming into his vision. It was a gigantic liner, and as it came into view he saw its name, THE TITAN, and the word ‘unsinkable’ came into his mind. Seeing it more clearly, he realised that there were only twenty-four lifeboats… and just ahead, looming in the fog, he saw a deadly iceberg… Strange details came to him: spacious cabins… decks like promenades… unsinkable… indestructible.. seventyfive thousand tons… nearly 3000 humans in danger… – In fact, with uncanny precision, he wrote and published his book The Wreck of the Titan in 1898, virtually foretelling the real event by more than a decade. Even before this, an even stranger premonition occurred. This time, in the

Stead was passionately concerned with all sorts of campaigns to help and save others. He was an editor and a lecturer, and one of his concerns was with safety at sea. In 1910 he gave a lecture in London in which he imagined himself desperately floundering in the sea and calling for help. Chillingly, he visited a famous psychic, who told him he should beware of water and stay away from the sea. Later, that same psychic, Count Louis Hamon, wrote to him to specify that ‘travel would be dangerous in the

month of April, 1912.’ Stead even consulted another psychic, W. de Kerlor, who told him – to his great surprise – that he would go to America.. adding ‘I can only see half the ship… You can guess the rest… Yes, William Stead did buy a ticket for the maiden voyage of The Titanic. Slimmer’s joy at the pitter patter of tiny feet Rhonda, 42, from Bournemouth joined Slimming World hoping it would help her to start the family she so desperately wanted. Struggling with her weight since her early 20’s, she was drawn to every diet that was marketed, from ones that promised quick fix results to calorie counting every morsel that passed her lips. She lost a few pounds here and there but always gained the weight back and more. The final straw came when she struggled to fall pregnant and the despair her & her husband felt for nearly 2 years. They found out there were no medical explanations, but her doctor suggested trying to lose some weight. Carrying excess weight can cause high blood pressure and various other health implications, so this definitely would not be helping the situation. It was then she decided to join Slimming World as this is the only national weight management club in the UK who continues to give support to members who become pregnant and has a unique partnership with the RCM (Royal College of Midwives) Alliance. A friend at work also wanted to shed a few pounds so they choose the Tuckton group as it was nearest to work and they became ‘diet buddies’. They couldn’t believe how much you could fill up on good healthy foods without counting a thing, found Food Optimising and Extra Easy so simple to follow and were astonished that you could eat a Full English breakfast and not put on weight. They lost 7lb between them in the 1st week, in 5 months Rhonda had lost 1 and a half stone, her blood pressure had dropped to normal and was elated when she received confirmation that finally she was pregnant. The hardest part was keeping it from her diet buddy for those first 12 weeks. They had gone through such a supportive journey together she felt awful making excuses each week when the baby weight started to gain whilst her buddy was still losing but the consultant Janice was amazing, she knew her situation and was extremely confidential at all times. Being a member of Slimming World before and during the beginning of her pregnancy

gave her the knowledge to follow a healthy diet that was best for her and her baby. Despite this, understandably she put on 3st during pregnancy. Having all the books still from group she convinced herself that once baby was born she could ‘go it alone’. However 10 months later she was still kidding herself because once her little boy started on solids, leftovers of a well know brand of rusk and full fat mini yoghurt became part of her daily diet. She was not losing any weight although she seemed to be constantly on her feet. She avoided looking at herself in the mirror and found it hard looking at any photos of herself even with her beautiful baby; this in particular really saddened her. There was only one thing for it, the missing ingredient was a Slimming World group, the support you receive at group during Image Therapy is key to a successful weight loss and most importantly keeping it off. She re-joined the Verwood group in September 2011 at 12st 6lb, hit her club 10 by week 12 and has already lost an incredible 2 stone. Rhonda says, “I am so happy with my new life and feel fantastic!!! I have all the energy I need to run around after my little boy and I look the best I have ever looked. I know I can help others enjoy the same weight loss success and I love sharing my story so much that I am opening my own group on Wednesday April 11th 7pm at West Cliff Baptist Church. Heard the cuckoo yet? The sound of the cuckoo’s song is a traditional sign of spring, announcing the arrival of warmer weather and longer days. The cuckoo has a firm place in British folklore, and is a cherished summer visitor from sub-Saharan Africa, arriving in Britain in late April or early May. It can be seen throughout the country in open woodland areas, and is most abundant in the south. The cuckoo’s summer stay with us is rather brief, though, as the adults head back south in July and August, followed by the juveniles about a month later. The cuckoo sound of the male’s song is instantly recognisable, but in flight, this medium sized, blue and grey bird can be mistaken for kestrel and sparrowhawk. Male and female are rather similar in appearance and the juveniles are brown. Apart from its song, the cuckoo is probably best known for being a brood parasite, as the female lays a single egg to be incubated in the nest of its chosen host species; reed warbler, dunnock or meadow pipit. The youngster, not to be outdone by its mother in the art of deception, ejects its ‘siblings’ as soon as it has hatched, thus securing the foster parents’ full attention at feeding times. The

cuckoos feed mostly on insects; caterpillars, beetles and ants. Bright coloured, hairy caterpillars are on the top of their list, as their digestive system is well adapted to tolerate them. The cuckoo is currently a red list species of conservation concern, its numbers having been in steep decline for over two decades. The reasons for the decline are currently being investigated, but there are believed to be multiple factors, such as a reduction in prey species, especially caterpillars, changes in the cuckoos’ habitats here and in Africa, and even climate change.
