Test Valley Businesses start their Recruitment Pipeline... ...with Secondary School Students Over 58 businesses in Test Valley gave up their time to work with EBP South (Inc. Basingstoke Consortium) to encourage over 350 secondary school students to consider the different careers available to them in their local area at the virtual Get Inspired Test Valley event. The Get Inspired events run by EBP South provide young people with an interactive way to explore the businesses on their doorstep and the different careers available to them. Rachel Parker, Project Manager of EBP South said, “There are many different local employers and job roles that students have never heard of and Get Inspired helps to identify these future career opportunities. The business-led activities highlight the skills employers are looking for and encourage students to aspire to the different job roles they can do within their local area. Importantly, businesses attending these events are engaging with their future employees from an early age and are able to attract and develop local talent to ensure their industry doesn’t experience skills gaps later on.” The event is considered an important part of businesses’ recruitment pipeline as research has shown that one-third of 15–16-year-olds career aspirations are in just ten jobs. This event gives businesses the opportunity to showcase job roles to students in a practical way. David Drew, Councillor at Test Valley Council said, “Helping young people to think about their future careers is so important and I am very grateful to EBP South (Education Business Partnership) and for all of the schools and employers who have made Get Inspired, our first online careers event, such a success. Naturally, I am especially pleased that four Test Valley

schools and 13 Test Valley businesses, including my own borough council, took part. The world of work is changing fast, and I am keen that Test Valley Borough Council will continue to support this vital connection between our places of learning and our local employers. Onwards and upwards for an exciting event at The Army Flying Museum next time!” The Get Inspired Test Valley Live event sponsored by Test Valley Borough Council and Simplyhealth took place on Thursday 29th April 2021 and was streamed live into five schools which all took part in one business-led activity followed by a Q&A session with professionals. In total over 20 businesses and 29 professionals supported the live event. Andy O’Neill, Talent Acquisition Specialist at Simplyhealth, comments: “The Get Inspired Test Valley Live event is an important step in the careers advice journey for students and one we were really pleased to sponsor. It’s a great opportunity for students to hear directly from employers on a variety of job roles and the skills needed to be successful. With a huge shift into the digital world, there are now career paths that didn’t exist even five years ago, so being able to raise awareness and spark interest in students will enable them to explore more possibilities.” Get Inspired is now continuing online with a Virtual Inspirational Careers Fair which has over 59 businesses virtually exhibiting. Students browse the local companies, types of jobs available and hear from employees about their career journeys into their industry.

A floral celebration of ‘The Mayflower’ & Pilgrim Stephen Hopkins of Upper Cladford All Saints’ Church, Upper Clatford will be a blaze of colour on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th August for a flower festival. The festival will celebrate the 440th anniversary of the baptism of local resident, Stephen Hopkins in 1581. In 1620, Stephen joined the Pilgrims to sail on the Mayflower. The flower festival was postponed from 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is in aid of All Saints’ Church roof repairs. Stephen Hopkins had a very adventurous life and had already been to America once when he boarded the Mayflower. Stephen’s story in flowers will take visitors from Upper Clatford to a shipwreck in the Sea Venture off Bermuda, Jamestown, and finally to Plymouth in America, where he was the first Pilgrim to host one of the leading local Native Americans in his home. Displays will also depict the ‘Mayflower Compact’, a governance agreement that was signed by the Pilgrims before landing, farming, the very first ‘Thanksgiving’, Stephen’s business in Plymouth and Stephen’s children and grandchildren. Since Stephen Hopkins’ roots in Upper Clatford were traced by American researchers over ten years ago, All Saints’ Church has received a steady number of descendants who delight in walking in Stephen’s footsteps. Village organisations will be participating either by sponsoring arrangements to be done by the church flower arrangers or doing their own arrangements.

Admission to the ﬂower festival is £5 to include refreshments. The festival will be open on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August, 11am – 5pm. The festival will be subject to any Covid-19 restrictions that are in force at the time.

Historical note:

It is believed that the account of the shipwreck of the Sea Venture oﬀ Bermuda on which Stephen Hopkins was travelling as the Minister’s Clerk, by William Strachey, reached Shakespeare and was used by him when formulating ideas for The Tempest. The description of the storm and the island in The Tempest bear a close description to William Strachey’s account.

Councillor’s Column My grateful thanks go to the doctors, nurses, surgery staff and many volunteers who are continuing to work flat out delivering the vaccination programme. At the time of writing over 77% of Test Valley residents have now received their first jab and crucially, over 53% are now fully vaccinated. Whilst there is concern about the Indian variant, the vaccinations are working. There have been no hospital admissions over the last 7-days and no deaths. Actually, according to the government website there hasn’t been a death in Test Valley within 28-days of a positive test since the 7th of March. Again, at time of writing, the decision on implementing the next phase of roadmap to recovery has not yet been made, the key – even if there is a short delay - is to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible. Please do encourage everyone you know who is not yet vaccinated to get the jab when they get the call. At Test Valley’s Annual Council meeting recently, I reiterated our commitment to regenerating our town centres following the adoption of masterplans for both Romsey and Andover town centres last year. In Romsey, we are proceeding apace with the ‘quick wins’ voted by stakeholders to Romsey Future, improving the link between Sterling Walk and Broadwater Road and bringing forward plans for creating a feature of Fishlake Stream. In Andover, it was great to see so many people enjoying the new Riverside Park at Town Mills as I welcomed the Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council, Rob Humby and the Local Enterprise Partnership’s Head of Infrastructure, Kevin Travers to Andover recently to celebrate its completion. By showing them the fruits of our collective labour, I’m sure that the success at Town Mills will add further momentum to our ongoing conversa24

tions about the delivery of the wider project. Further enhancing the river corridor and redeveloping the Chantry Centre. A key element of the masterplan is also the proposed extension to Vigo Rec. Which I want to encourage people to enjoy, perhaps more frequently than they do currently. Finally, I’m relieved to have been notified by the Minister recently that the Home Office has formally dropped plans for a temporary immigration centre at Barton Stacey. Ever since this site was first put forward in November last year, local MP, Caroline Nokes and I have consistently made the case to government that this type of accommodation in this location is completely inappropriate. After initially suggesting a decision would be made in a matter of weeks, the Home Office had to carry out much more detailed work after we raised serious concerns about highway safety and habitats regulations amongst other strong arguments against it. I’m delighted that the Home Office has now concluded what we suggested all along, that this site is not a viable option.

working tribe called the Durotruges around 500 BC, Badbury Rings is now a place to take a leisurely walk, have a picnic, run around with the dog on a lead, or sit and gaze at the sunset falling from the earth as we see it. We parked in the National Trust car park and gazed at the circular clump of trees, chomping cows and rolling hills surrounding us, as we munched our food in the comfort of Daichi’s ‘diner’. What is great about a campervan is that you can park almost anywhere and have a full 360 degree view of your surroundings whether it is raining or sunny. You can have a picnic at a table, you don’t have to wait for one to be free, and you don’t have to ‘lug’ all the heavy bags to where you are going. It is all there for you, in the cupboard, knives, forks, spoons and even plates. It is all so very sophisticated and easy. Daichi loves to make life fun

and easy. He has a fridge, but that needs to be connected to the mains, so ice packs keep the food cool while we travel. He has a gas hob too, so the whistling kettle is a real treat, especially for a connoisseur coffee drinker like myself! Once we were fed and watered, we ventured out to walk around the remains of the Iron Age Hill Fort encircled with its three concentric circles of ditches and ramparts to protect the inhabitants from their enemies. It is a fascinating place with great views across Dorset’s green, rolling countryside, but what intrigued me the most was the atmosphere inside the Hill Fort. You can almost hear the children playing, the farmers working and the chink and clinging of metal being formed and welded into tools and weapons. Of course, that is where the Iron Age got its name from, as it is the era of iron. The average life expectancy of these people was just 25! No wonder they seemed to have a spirit of fun and frolic – better make the most of the short life they had, I say. They were also ruled by Warrior

Kings and the rivalry between tribes must have had everything to do with the life expectancy! Now, it is purported that there is the ghost of a Warrior King who haunts these hills, but maybe that was visioned after a whisky or two… who knows… Daichi prefers that spirit to the ghostly one! We could see the Isle of Wight in the far distance, Kingston Lacy House, that once owned the Rings and a Chinook helicopter flew right overhead. There were birds of prey swooping around and wonderful looking fungi on stumps of trees lying flat on the ground. How amazing to see so many different things all in one place. It is ideal for the young and old alike. Great to run madly around to tire out those youngsters, or wander slowly for us oldies. Badbury Rings is an easy place to get to if you want some space and a bit of an historical atmosphere. There is the poppy field not far away too, at this time of year. Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Welcome to the July Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include a close meeting of Venus and Mars, and the bright star Arcturus, ‘Guardian of the Bear’. International Space Station The ISS is visible every night throughout July, however, only after mid-month will sightings not require an extremely early morning start. Please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your home town.

Object of the Month In May’s Object of the Month we used the bowl of the Plough asterism to locate the North Star, Polaris. This month we use the opposite end of the plough, the handle, to ﬁnd the fourth and sixteenth brightest stars in the sky. Arcturus, translated from the Greek meaning ‘Guardian of the Bear’, is a 7-billion-year-old red giant star in the constellation of Boötes, and the fourth brightest star in the sky. Indigenous Polynesians know it by a diﬀerent name: Ana-tahua-taata-metua-te-tupu-mavae, one of the ten heavens. Arcturus is a very fast-moving star, travelling at 76 miles per second, and will disappear from naked-eye view in around 150,000 years. Continuing along the same curved line in the sky leads to Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo. Latin for ‘ear of wheat’, it is a double star located 250 light years away. The two stars in the system are so close they orbit each other once every 4 days.

Venus The ‘Evening Star’ is visible low in the western evening twilight until 10.30pm. Over the course of the month it moves towards Mars until they lie extremely close on 12th July, from whence they part. At this current time, Venus is over two hundred times brighter than Mars (see ﬁgure). They are also joined by the Moon for a pleasing vista on the 12th. Mars Visible at similar times to Venus but appearing much dimmer, the red planet is visible low in the western evening twilight until 10.30pm.

Jupiter and Saturn Our two largest and most spectacular planets are ﬁnally back on view in our evening skies. They can be spotted low in the southeast around midnight at the beginning of the month, moving to 11pm toward month end. Moon This month’s Full Moon on July 24th is traditionally known as the Thunder Moon. Native American tribes also call this full moon ‘the Moon when the buﬀalo bellow’. In Europe and other countries, July’s full moon is known by many names, including the Buck Moon, Hay Moon and Raspberry Moon. 34

Statement Statham Actor Jason Statham on an all-action career that continues to thrive. Jason Statham returns to our screens in 2021 with one, perhaps two new movies. Spy 2 – the follow-up to the 2015 original – is testament to the actor pursuing a more comedic line of drama as he moves into his ﬁfties, while Wrath of Man delivers a steely, police-driven drama that sees our main man fully back in combat mode. “This is what I do, and I’m proud of that,” he says. “I keep myself in shape, I deliver in my roles and I move on to the next thing. “I will always commit fully to a project, which is why I’ve always done my own stunts over the years. He has styled his own persona very much around the types

of characters he plays in Hollywood blockbusters. Yet whether a gun-toting criminal on the streets of London, a Bond-esque spy circumnavigating the globe, or simply the man who performs wheelspins better than even Vin Diesel, Statham, who is married to model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is constantly striving for the next big one. Yet would he ever stray away from the action genre… could he ever perhaps entertain something as leftfield as, say, a period drama? “Listen, the guys who put that stuff together make very good films,” he laughs. “I mean, the attention to detail is incredible, and the scriptwriting is on another planet. I just don’t know if they’re going to offer me a part in one of those films! “That said, I don’t have the refusal wall up for anything, I’m

open to all quality stuff, if somebody wants to send a great romantic comedy my way, I’ll be the first to read it.” So it seems that Statham the action man will continue for a good while longer. “That’s just the type of actor I am. I would struggle to do the cerebral, emotional stuff – that’s not to say I’m not like that at home, and around the people I love, but it’s true, I do have a certain image on film now and I’m happy with that.” It’s an image brought about by his father’s incredible encouraging spirit, and harnessed through his attempts to qualify for the Olympics as an expert diver. “I came third in three Olympic trials, I came close. So close. Every board qualifies the first two divers so I was just short three times.” The fact he has excelled in a totally different profession is not just consolation, but testament to Statham’s drive to achieve. Job done.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale School’s out for the summer! Of course with debates about international travel and the stress of where to holiday, might Hampshire, our own beautiful county, be the best place to enjoy some well earned time oﬀ and hopefully soak up the sun? Here’s ﬁve more interesting facts from around Hampshire which might just provide some staycationing inspiration!

Did you know that the only pony to have competed at Olympic level showjumping is buried in Hampshire? Stroller, a bay gelding, stood at only 14.1 hands high and as such was classiﬁed as a pony. Remarkably, Stroller not only competed to this standard but, ridden by jumping star Marion Coakes (later known as - Marion Mould) who won medals in prestigious competitions across the world even past the age of 20! The pony lived to the grand old age of 36 and is buried at the Barton on Sea golf club which was previously Marion Coakes’ farm. Perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings, did you know that a certain Hampshire country house was said to have inspired JRR Tolkien to write his masterpiece? The Vyne at Basingstoke has on display a special golden ring with Latin inscriptions which Tolkien was asked to evaluate in 1929, owing to his expertise in related ﬁelds. It is said that it was after this visit to The Vyne and a viewing of its precious ring that Tolkien would later publish The Hobbit in 1937! In any case, young writing minds may well enjoy an inspirational visit to this historic Hampshire gem!

Amazingly, the Round Tower, located at the entrance of Portsmouth Harbour, was built in 1418. Remarkably, it is one of the earliest known stone defences. Originally built to help safeguard the harbour from the ever-looming threat of attack from French ships, its predecessor was a strictly wooden aﬀair until it was recognised that the longstanding stone was a safer option. Even in the early 15th century, the Round Tower cost thousands and reportedly during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, all the ships that utilised the surrounding waters were required to donate a boatful of stones to help protect the tower from the waters or else risk a ﬁne!

DOGS IN HOT CARS One of the problems we worry about at this time of year is that of dogs in hot cars. We’re all aware of this and know that the inside of a car can get very hot in summer (at 22C air temperature outside, the inside of a car can reach 47C within an hour) so any animal left inside may overheat developing hyperthermia and dehydration. If this is untreated then the animal can die. I use the word “animal” as this applies to all pets, not just dogs! The obvious way to prevent this is not to leave pets in a car when it’s hot. However, sometimes it is unavoidable so what can you do to prevent the problem? 1. Leave the pet for as short a time as possible 2. Leave windows and sunroof open (though not wide open!) 3. Cover the windscreen with a blanket or sunscreen 4. Provide water 5. CHECK your pet regularly and let them out each time; this allows the interior to cool as well. There are also some new temperature probes that will send a signal to your mobile phone if the car gets too hot- however, don’t rely totally on these...all technology breaks down sometimes! What should you do if you see a dog in a car? Firstly, it is important to see if it is distressed or not but don’t be intrusive! 42

Disturbing the dog and causing it to bark will actually make things worse as it will lose fluid through its mouth and being active will make it hotter. In short, if the dog seems calm, leave it be. If it is in distress then get help at once – dial 999 but do not break into the vehicle yourself unless advised to by the police (otherwise it can be classed as criminal damage). If your dog is hyperthermic then it is important to cool it down. The best way to do this is to cover it in a wet sheet. Please note that the water should be cool but not cold otherwise shock may result. NEVER use ice! Veterinary attention should be sought quickly as fluids via a drip will be needed. We’re very fortunate that everyone already seems well aware of this and we actually see less than one case of hyperthermia a year! It’s still too many but it is good to see that the publicity does help in this case.

No-Knead Bread Introduction

When Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey came up with this recipe for no-knead bread – published in The New York Times in 2009 – it caused quite the stir. Surely something so simple couldn’t yield the kind of ﬂavourful crust and airy middle we expect to buy from an artisan baker? Well, just give it a try and see for yourself…

Ingredients

Makes one loaf

• 3 cups of all-purpose ﬂour (405g or 14.3oz) • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt • 1/2 teaspoon of instant yeast • 1 1/2 cups/350ml of room temperature water

Top Tips • If you don’t have a cast-iron pot, you can improvise using a pizza stone and an upturned stainless-steel bowl, as maintaining a high temperature is essential for creating that desirable crust, you will need something to trap warm air around your bread. • Don’t worry if you need to leave your dough to rise longer than the stated time. Up to 24 hours is ﬁne as it is this waiting time that allows the yeast to ferment and create air bubbles without kneading. • Don’t be afraid to improvise. Whether you want to try

Method 1. In a bowl combine flour, yeast and salt. Add 350ml water and stir until blended; the dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover the bowl with cling film, then let the dough rest for at least 12 hours, and preferably up to 18, at warm room temperature. When the dough is ready it will be dotted with bubbles. 2.
