Dear Residents, From where I stand today, it looks like the restrictions are being lifted. Many are delighted with this, and many are a little trepidatious. It is down to our personal integrity and doing not only what is right for ourselves, but others around us too. Despite the setbacks and worries, which have been huge, there is a sense of community and helping each other, that I believe is stronger today. Let’s move forward with purpose and a sense of hope, to make this go right and turn what we can to a positive future. Supporting our local community, local trades and services is all part of us working together. The advertisers here in your magazine really look forward to your calls. Businesses and trades that have been continuing to promote themselves throughout these interesting times have kept afloat and are in fact doing very well. Bepuzzling Summer Trail is coming to Andover

Bepuzzling Summer Trail is coming to Andover this summer, families in Andover will be able to track down 10 colourfully outlandish vehicles on a high street trail thanks to In Andover from the Andover BID. In the Andover Town Centre this summer InAndover are hosting a free family trail that is encouraging families to come in with this safe, socially distanced and contactless event. Following on from the success of Mr Finniebaker’s Easter Trail, they’ve teamed up again with QR code trail experts High Street Safari to create the Bepuzzled Treasure Trail, a free interactive story-trail that is designed to encourage children to walk, get engaged and most importantly, have a lot of fun. The Bepuzzled Treasure Trail will be positioned around the Town Centre with 10 ‘steamtabulous’ vehicles to ﬁnd. Families will follow Ollie the fox and Izzy the bunny on a globe-trotting, puzzle-solving voyage around the world as they search for the ultimate treasure.The trail takes about 45 minutes to complete but can be completed in more than one visit. It’s completely free for families and groups to take part in and they win an e-book at the end that concludes the story. The trail works by utilising contactless QR codes, without the need for families to download or sign up to anything. With safety in mind, it has been designed so that there is no 6

need to go inside the venues,but some articipating businesses are offering extra incentives to come in while you visit. When families in Andover scan each vehicle’s unique QR code they’ll learn more of the story and find a riddle to solve. They’ll also be able to take a unique selfie with each vehicle for a special keepsake. Younger children will enjoy spotting the colourful characters and vehicles in shop windows and older kids, and grown-up ones, will engage by reading the stories. Families will be able to access the trail map and details of participating shops here. QR Codes and Decals will be in situated in the shop windows throughout Independents’ Month from Friday9th July and over the school Summer Holidays until Sunday 29th August. Anton Rotary Club is back in business! After being locked down like so many other clubs and charities, Anton Rotary Club weekly meetings have recommenced at the Oak public house, Smannell, on Thursday evenings. Club members undertook their ﬁrst event, with many other volunteers, on Saturday, 10 July to help the Countess of Brecknock hospice raise much needed funds. Looking ahead, on Saturday, 31st July the club will be helping out at the Naomi House and Jacksplace hospice for children Bubble Rush event at Charlton Lakes, another fund raising event that will see all ages running round a marked route where huge bubble machines will be producing thousands of colourful bubbles. In September the club will be running another metal detecting event using land kindly donated for the event by a local farmer. These events have been extremely well attended in the past and the weekend of the 18/19 September is already shaping up to be another great weekend for metal detectorists. Duck racing is back!! Monday, 30 August, Anton Rotary Club is reintroducing its highly successful fun event using the river Anton. We are promoting it as the “Great Anton Duck Day”, utilising the newly created Town Mills riverside park areas. The event starts from 12

11.00 am and runs through the day with six duck races taking centre stage. Tickets will be available from 11.00 am onwards and Duck racing will commence from 1.30 pm with great prizes to be won from each race. There will be loads for kids to do including enjoying children’s fairground rides, making and decorating a boat to take part in a boat race. The Town Mills pub is putting on a barbarque from 12.30 pm onwards. There will be plenty of space for picnicking during the event. Music will be provided by some of our wonderfully talented local musicians and singers from mid afternoon onwards. Parking will be free in the Chantrey Centre car park. Some disabled parking will be available in the Town Mills car park. Watch this space as more details are revealed during the count down to the Bank Holiday Monday.

Town pulls together for Climate Day of Action

Andover came together at the end of June to help address the changing environment through the town’s ﬁrst Climate Day of Action. Launched by community partnership Andover Vision, businesses, community groups and charities all took part and committed to how they can continue to make a diﬀerence in the face of climate change. Residents left pledges at the Andover Vision stall in the high street, with school pupils across the town vowing to recycle more and help plant trees in the years to come. Partners of Andover Vision, including Test Valley Friends of the Earth and Andover Trees United, also held stalls in the town to help educate and inform members of the community on how to play their part now and in the future. Organisations in the town, including Test Valley Borough Council, took part in the day, with the authority lending out litter-picking equipment and working with local nursery, Finkley Down Farm Nursery and Preschool to teach them how to make, and then plant, seed 14

bombs. Simplyhealth collected bags of waste, three shopping trolleys and a pallet among other items in their river clean, while media outlet Love Andover committed to a monthly litter pick. Chair of Andover Vision, Phil North, said: “Above all, I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in the day. Without committed residents, businesses and community groups, Andover’s Climate Day of Action simply wouldn’t have been the success that it was. “Days and events such as these rely on the people of the town to come together, not only to make the day as worthwhile as can be, but also to make the lasting change that Friday was calling out for. Whether it was schools teaching young students about the impact we all have, or residents learning what and how we recycle, I know that the hard work of everyone who put this day together will have been worth it. Councillor’s Column At the time of writing, the Prime Minister has just announced that the vast majority of Covid restrictions will come to an in July. Whilst this is great news, I think it’s important to reiterate that Covid hasn’t gone away and that the Delta variant is still pushing up case rates. The difference between now and the turn of the year though is the strength of our vaccination programme. Eighty-eight percent of Test Valley residents have now received their first jab and twothirds are fully vaccinated. Public Health England data shows that vaccinations are 96% effective at stopping hospitalisations and they are also preventing deaths. In the three-month period from the 1st January to the 31st March 2021, there were 85 deaths from Covid in Test Valley within 28-days of a positive test. From the 1st April to the time of writing (in mid-July) there has only been 1. Although for numerous reasons our lives are going to continue to be very different from what they were 18-months ago, I hope this will give people the confidence to get back to somewhere near normality. Personally, I can’t wait to get back to parkrun on a Saturday morning, socialise with wider friendship groups and visit the numerous public events that are usually the staple of a Test Valley 24

summer. I got an early taste of that at the Wallop Wheels & Wings event at the Museum of Army Flying recently. It was fabulous to see so many people enjoying themselves again, including many visitors to Test Valley. A great advert for our beautiful borough. Finally, back in June, I spent some time on the Test Valley Borough Council stand at the Andover Vision Climate Day of Action. Put on to promote the small changes we can all make to help tackle climate change and look after our environment. Test Valley were talking all things recycling as well as promoting our hugely successful Community Litter Picking Scheme. Whilst our main message is not to drop litter in the first place, if you love were you live and want to help our dedicated Environmental Services team tidy up Test Valley, you can sign up via our website. We’ve got over 400 community litter pickers of all ages right across the borough. We provide all the equipment. The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Isn’t it great to go for a walk in our luscious green, English countryside! Daichi highly recommends walking to clear away the mental cobwebs and stresses of the week. He loves to bounce his way to the destination, always with a picnic, coffee at the ready and a big stealy white smile. We love him. This time he took us to Pamphill near Wimborne in East Dorset. There are bluebell woods here which can look amazing at the right time of the year. In 2018 the National Trust planted 2500 trees at the Abbott Street Plantation, which you can see on the map. This included oak, hazel, scots pine, sweet chestnut and wild cherry trees. The intention is to extend the ancient woodland for future generations, so they continue to enjoy our wonderful wildlife and views. How cool is that. Some of the trees in the woodland have been standing there for 300 years (and I feel old…) and are struggling with disease and stress, so there was a fence to keep us heavy humans out and allow the trees some space, peace and quiet to recover. Maybe there is a lesson to learn there… certainly

Ancient woodland at Abbott Street Copse taking a walk can help us too, recover from a taxing week. In addition to that some of the dead trees, known as “standing deadwood” have been deliberately left where they have stood for hundreds of years. These old, decayed trees, which still have a wonderful presence about them, are great for wildlife and create a haven for woodpeckers, insects, tree creepers and a large variety of fungi. They make it a heathy habitat for other species to thrive. I love nature and there is definitely something very magical about this woodland. I take my hat off (or Daichi’s bonnet) to the National Trust who are preserving this delightful area. We really enjoyed our meanderings. Once out of the sheltered wood, we walked to more open ground, across fields and climbed over stiles to follow the walk we had found on our phone. Modern technology working with ancient woodlands and a beautiful leisurely stroll. The walk is about an hour long, though we were walking pretty slowly really, so for those who like more of a hike you could probably do this in half an

hour! We like to amble, take our time and breathe in the fresh air. We saw buzzards, deer, horses and walkers with dogs. The view further on the trail is amazing. Rolling hills and farmhouses. One thatched cottage in the distance had had a fire and was burnt to a cinder, all black and eerie looking. I do not know the story there, but I certainly hope everyone was safe. Back at the Pamphill Green car park we decided to visit St Stephen’s Church, which is the Bankes Family Church. The Bankes family owned Kingston Lacy Country House and this Church was built in memory of Walter Ralph Bankes who was a Lord High Admiral of Purbeck. I immediately noticed there were no gravestones. Call me odd, but as a teenager and later at university I used to walk around Churches and Graveyards to read the tombstones. I found it fascinating to see who was alive in the area then, how long they had lived and see family members all together. Pure enchantment. To others I was seen as a little ‘mad’ I think! Well, it is a good job we are all different I say. So, immediately seeing there were no gravestones to read, I looked it up on good old Google and found that land has to be consecrated in order to have a burial ground. Holy water, which has been blessed by a priest is used to make the land sacred and only then can

Daichi waited in the woods the land be used for burials. This land was obviously not consecrated and thus no tombstones to read. Churches do have a certain atmosphere about them, especially chocolate-box looking ones like this one. Idyllic. This Church was built in 1907 after seven years of construction. The previous Church had been left to go to ruins and unlike the dead trees in the woods, a broken-down, dilapidated Church does not aid others in their survival, so a new one had to be built. Well, they did a very good job I have to say. All this countryside walking and fresh air meant that refreshments were in order. The Vine Inn Pub is a very short drive down the road and as it was a lovely evening, we decided to sit in the garden there and have a drink. A great end to a very simple, relaxed afternoon. After all the chasing around of the week it was delightful to sit and listen to birds singing, taste the fresh night air and chill out. Daichi watched us with an equally lazy smile. Wherever you live there is countryside not that far away. If you are able to get out and about, all you need is walking shoes and a jacket just in case. Take your time, take a stroll and let nature calm the spirits. Truly recommended. Where will Daichi take us next I wonder? By Debbie Corney

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Welcome to the August Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include 2021’s best meteor shower, the gas giants on display, and how to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. International Space Station The ISS is only visible for the last few days of August, between 3 – 6am. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your home town. Events The annual Perseid meteor shower, famous for its bright ﬁreballs and persistent trains, reaches its peak this year on the night of 12 - 13th August. Fortunately, the optimum time to spot most meteors is after midnight, and as the Moon sets at 10.30pm we will be left with a dark sky to observe the best meteor shower of the year. Grab a warm drink, coat and a blanket and see what you can spot. Although the radiant for the shower is towards the northeast, the meteors can appear to come from any direction in the sky. Mercury & Mars The Solar System’s two smallest planets lie adjacent to each other low on the western horizon after sunset and are incredibly diﬃcult to locate, being lost in the Sun’s glare.

Object of the Month August is a great month to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, found within the constellation of Sagittarius. Look for the ‘Teapot’ asterism low to the south around 9pm (see figure). Its spout points towards the galactic centre, which hosts a super massive black hole called Sgr A* that has a mass equivalent of 4 million suns. This area is wonderfully rich in star clusters and a set of binoculars swept over the area will reveal a magnificent suite of astronomical objects. This part of the sky never gets very high, and is best viewed between July and September, so get out there if you can and enjoy it whilst it lasts! You’ll need a good view south – the Bournemouth clifftop is a good place to look, but watch out for low sea mists and heat haze disrupting your view. View S throughout Aug at 9:30PM

Venus Conversely, Venus is the incredibly bright object in the west, visible until about 9.30pm. Jupiter and Saturn Jupiter and Saturn ﬁnally return in all their splendour to our evening skies. Located low in the southeast around 9pm, they move higher towards the south around midnight. Jupiter, on the left, is the brighter of the two (see ﬁgure). If you are able to look at Jupiter through a pair of binoculars you may see four pinpricks of light close to the planet. These are its four largest moons; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Moon This month’s full moon occurs on 22nd August, and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Barley, Fruit and Grain Moon. 34

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Isn’t August the perfect time of year to enjoy Hampshire in all its glory? Long days and hopefully nice weather throughout the month, what could be better than delving into the county’s most interesting facts in celebration of the last of the summer in our own county? From an interesting royal connection to Winchester’s watermill to an American showman, here’s another handful of quirky facts from around Hampshire!

Did you know that the British Deer Society was founded in 1963 and is based in Fordingbridge? The society was formed after it became apparent following the Second World War that deer populations were considerably larger than had been estimated. Originally known as the Deer Group within the much larger Mammal Society, the aim was to maintain safe numbers and strong herds and even today, decades later, the society works hard to educate and ensure a safe future for Britain's deer herds.

Perhaps unsurprisingly it was in Hampshire that the first powered flight took place. Lasting only a few seconds, the man behind the machine was American showman and cowboy who claimed to be the long lost son of Buffalo Bill, Samuel Franklin Cody. Although the alleged connection was not true, it is certainly true that Samuel Cody beheld his namesake’s talent for showbusiness and it was with the flamboyance of a showman that he took to the skies above Farnborough Common in 1903. Cody went on to contribute greatly to aviation in Britain however tragically, just a few years later, Cody flew once again at the common, only to suffer a crash that made him one of the first people to die in an aviation disaster.

Hampshire’s census records always provide a fascinating insight into the county’s history. However, did you know that some of the most common names by population in 1881 included the less than usual surnames of Tier, Urry and Tolfree which amazingly had origins meaning ‘someone who saddled horses for women?

Aside from providing fine quality flour for generations of Winchester locals, it’s iconic history has attracted many great historical figures from JMW Turner to Mary Tudor who gifted the mill to the city in return for having her wedding to Philip II of Spain at the city’s cathedral. Remarkably the charming village of Fritham had an unusual claim to fame from the 1860s to the 1920s when it became the headquarters of the Schultze factory. Interestingly the factory was renowned for its development for a smokeless powder used by many estates throughout the country for sporting purposes. Amazingly the small Hampshire village would become the centre of the largest nitro-compound gunpowder factory and in later times a whopping three quarters of the world’s annual gunpowder consumption for sport all hailed from Fritham!

After a long warm (though wet!) year we are seeing a lot of ticks. The main species of tick found in the UK has a long life cycle lasting several years. The tick will feed just once a year on whatever mammal it can hitch onto. After feeding it will drop oﬀ and rest until the following year. Their ability to ﬁnd a new host each year is uncanny- ticks will wait on the top of plants and are attracted to the host by a combination of vibration, body heat and carbon dioxide levels As ticks age they get larger- the largest being the adult females about to lay eggs. The tiny newly-hatched ticks are often referred to as seed ticks. As these hatch together from a clutch of eggs, it is easy to see a pet that has walked through a clutch- there will be many tiny seed ticks all over their face! What problems do ticks cause? Often none, other than being unsightly and very unpleasant. However, lots of pets do react to the tick saliva and will develop solid lumps where the tick has attached. These can also become infected. More importantly, they can carry diseases the most important of which is Lyme’s disease. Lyme’s is a bacterial disease that can cause severe internal disease and even death. It is an extremely hard disease to diagnose : there are no classic symptoms- pets are just sick and don’t respond to standard antibiotics. Blood tests for Lyme’s antibodies are required to diagnose this. Fortunately it is treatable if caught in time and, even more fortunately, it is not commonly found around Andover. However, Lyme’s areas are not far away – the New Forest is a particularly bad area and pets walked here are at risk. 42

Don’t forget that people can contract Lyme’s from ticks as well so they are at risk in these areas too. Anyone walking in a risk area is well advised to read http://www.newforest.gov.uk/media /adobe/ACFDD1D.pdf for advice on protecting against infection Tick reactions and infections are “carried” in tick saliva. It is therefore important when removing ticks to use a hook rather than pulling or applying chemicals as only the hook will prevent the tick regurgitating more saliva into the pet. Prevention of infestation primarily involves reducing contact with ticks. This generally means avoiding long grass, brackens or other overgrown areas where ticks hide- ie any dog or cat who exercises freely is likely to be encounter ticks. So, avoidance is not always possible for most pets! There are also many anti-parasitic treatments that can be effective against ticks- spot ons, sprays and collars. Many of these will also treat fleas. However, not all flea treatments will protect against ticks and some that are will need to be used in different ways or different frequencies when dosing against ticks. It is therefore important to discuss anti-tick treatments with your vet or vet nurse to ensure that your pet is receiving an effective treatment in an effective manner.

Summer Fruits Pie Introduction

Make the most of summers berries with this delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh cream!

Ingredients

(serves four)

For the pastry: 225g cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g plain flour 50g icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries or blueberries 100g sugar 2tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

Method

1. Put the ﬂour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingﬁlm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight. 2. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins. Remove the paper and beans. the mixture into your baked pie base. 3. Roll out the second batch of pastry and top the pie with it, trimming to ﬁt, and using a fork to seal the edge. Use a sharp knife to create a few slits for steam to escape before brushing with the whisked egg white before topping with sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden. Leave to cool as ﬁlling will be extremely hot!

• If you’re time-starved, feel free to use pre-made shortcrust pastry which is generally as good as homemade, and certainly easier! • If you don’t have baking beans use cooking weights, dried lentils or rice. • If you don’t have access to a food processor simply rub the butter and ﬂour together until it is the texture of breadcrumbs.
