TVBC pushing on with climate action Plans to help tackle climate change and protect the environment are pushing forward as Test Valley Borough Council cracks on with implementation of the Climate Emergency Action Plan. Back in September 2019, the council declared a climate emergency, and spent the next six months putting together a plan to ensure the authority is as green as possible. Now, after initial feedback last autumn, the council has updated the Overview and Scrutiny Committee on the progress that has been made over the recent winter months. Three new waste collection vehicles with electric bin lifts, lower energyconsuming lighting for the Chantry Centre car park and a renewable energy guarantee for the council’s electricity supply are just some of the positive changes made. Looking to the future, a recently completed study on renewable and low carbon energy potential will help contribute to the next Local Plan, as the council works towards settings out the future planning policies. Businesses have also benefitted, with the authority working together with external organisations to help local businesses secure more than £100,000 in grant funding to

undertake energy audits and launch low carbon projects of their own. Chair of OSCOM, councillor Zilliah Brooks, said: “The last 12 months has been anything but ordinary, however we have remained as committed as ever to finding ways to cut back on our carbon output as an authority. These latest developments are testament to the hard work of our officers over the past few months, but we’re also making sure to look ahead and not let up on our efforts.” Environmental portfolio holder, councillor Alison Johnston, said: “This latest set of developments are brilliant, however the crucial part is that we are planning for the future in ensuring our carbon output remains low. One of the key parts in this is the Local Plan as we look to set out our planning policies for the environment for the next few years.”

A decade of devotion William and Kate celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The decade William and Kate have spent together has been significant not just for the arrival of three children, but the dawning of a new and rather troubled era of royal life where the groom’s own brother has fled the nest of the Windsors. The marriage ceremony for took place at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. It was overseen by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, in front of the families of the bride and groom, as well as members of foreign royalty, diplomats, and the couple’s chosen personal guests. The costs of the wedding itself were borne by the royal family and the Middletons themselves, with a guest list totalling 1,900 people. A third of those went on to a royal luncheon, with a privileged final 300 attending an evening dinner hosted by the Prince of Wales. In terms of the stats behind the day, over two million people lined the streets to get a glimpse of the happy couple as they made their way to and from Westminster Abbey. Their new titles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were

announced by the Queen at 8am on the day of the wedding; while the ﬂower budget alone was estimated at half a million pounds (that’s a third more than the wedding dress). In the years that followed the couple have carried out their duties with exemplary calm and

compassion. While others have faltered, William and Kate have strode forward with humility and a connectedness to the British public. Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond says the way the couple have gone about their duties has been impressive. “I think they’re doing well at having a

normal family life. The family are continuing the tradition they’ve adopted from years ago which is to give the press some access at key moments and then hope that their privacy will be respected the rest of the time.” As far as Kate’s immersion into royal life goes, clearly the births of princes George and Louis (2013 and 2018 respectively) and Princess Charlotte (2015), have endeared her to almost every onlooker, and that’s particularly impressive in a world of 24/7 media and Twitterati. “I think there’s a lot less deference now,” says Bond. “We know a lot more about them and I think people are demanding that the royal family be much more accountable for their actions, socially and ﬁnancially. “William and Kate are absolutely the best exemplars of this and I’m sure they will go on to be in future too.”

Our love of a prank is no better exempliﬁed on April Fool’s Day; but how did this peculiar annual opportunity to make a mockery of mates (and strangers) come about? As with so many of the constituents of common folklore, it’s very often the case that the customs, traditions and habits that we know, love and undertake religiously today cannot be traced back to any deﬁnite point. April Fool’s Day certainly falls into that bracket. An event that was seen to gather pace in the 16th and 17th centuries might be attributed to Flemish poet Eduard de Dene, who in 1561 wrote of a nobleman who would send his servants out on foolish errands on April 1.

What could be a better way to enjoy April than in our beautiful county of Hampshire? Surely nothing could compare to a spring in our much loved county although perhaps enjoying a delve into Hampshire’s amazing history would be the icing on the cake. Yes, from a tragic connection to the Titanic to an interesting world first, here are five more interesting facts from around the county. There is something remarkable about standing beside an ancient tree or wizened plant which has clearly seen more history throughout its life than you, your parents or even your grandparents and yet there something even more remarkable is being able to delve into the flora that existed locally decades if not centuries ago. Thanks to a certain botanist, Lady Anne Brewis, this is indeed possible. Having spent her girlhood in Hampshire and spending her latter years in the county, Lady Anne would go on to co-author a definitive documentation of Hampshire’s botany.

Did you know that Hampshire was once home to the longest building in Britain and perhaps even the world? During the Crimean War, greater attention was given to the plight of injured soldiers and so, at the bequest of Queen Victoria herself, the Netley Hospital was built. Despite her earlier support though, Florence Nightingale was appalled with the regality as opposed to the practicality the hospital displayed and publicly published her disapproval. Although the hospital was largely demolished in 1966, it was a grand display of architecture, measuring a quarter of a mile in length and oﬀering one thousand beds. Netley Hospital dwarfed every other structure in Britain and was complete with its own pier and railway. 16

Historically a royal forest and also hailed for its wood, used by the Royal Navy, did you know that even in the 21st century, the Alice Holt Forest is continuing to be part of history? The modern day replica of the Globe Theatre in London was designed to recreate the theatre and similar not only it's design but also its construction, using some methods and materials that were used in building the original. Amazingly, oak timber from Alice Holt was used to reincarnate this cultural gem all thanks to this ancient Hampshire forest Did you know that Thomas the Tank Engine was born in Hampshire? The creator of the hugely popular children's stories was Rev Wilbert Awdry from Hampshire related, "There was no doubt in my mind that steam engines all had deﬁnite personalities. I would hear them snorting up the grade and little imagination was needed to hear in the puﬃngs and pantings of the two engines the conversation they were having with one another."

The tragic Titanic disaster claimed the lives of many, including several men from Fritham. Among those who died were three brothers who were part of the larger Hickman family who had just decided to resettle in Canada. The three brothers were able to secure passage on the Titanic, with other members of their family ﬁnding alternative methods of passage. They travelled with others from the Hampshire villages, namely Percy Deacon, Ambrose Hood, Charlie Davies and William Dibden and together, their ticket cost them a remarkable £72. None of these men from Fritham were to survive the shocking Titanic disaster and some bodies were never recovered.

COUNCILLORS COLUMN The ongoing success of the vaccination programme means that our town centres are due to spring back into life this month. My continued thanks to the scientists, logistics operators and, of course, the doctors, nurses, surgery staff and volunteers for making it happen. Like most of you, I’m particularly looking forward to a haircut as well as continuing to support our fantastic independent businesses. We all know that town centres are changing, that they are becoming more of a place for leisure and living as well as retail, but retail is still an important part of the mix. Therefore, that adage of 'use it or lose it' has never been more important. Especially considering some of the high-profile High Street casualties that we’ve seen nationwide. Thankfully, we have a higher percentage of independents in Test Valley than in many other areas, which means the national move away from identikit town centres puts us in a comparatively decent position. We’ve also been investing money, time, and effort in creating and starting to implement masterplans for both Andover and Romsey. There was also some encouraging news in the Budget last month to help our High Street retailers, which fits well with the council’s regeneration proposals. Including restart grants which Test Valley are administering, as well as an extension to the business rates holiday. Meaning all eligible businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors will pay no rates until June before a cut in rates bills by two-thirds for the remaining nine months. Disappointingly, there weren’t any confirmed proposals about how the

government are going to create a fairer tax system for High Street businesses vs online retail, which is badly needed. There has been a previous commitment to tackle this, and I hope it will come forward ASAP. Finally, I recently joined a summit meeting with other leaders to discuss waste infrastructure in Hampshire. Taking the opportunity to, once again, lobby the County Council to get on with upgrading their Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFS), where the contents of your brown bin are taken for processing. Although less than 6% of waste here in Test Valley goes to landﬁll, we can always do more. Particularly to improve our recycling rate. Unfortunately, the County Council’s MRFS are unable to deal with some of the materials that are recycled in other local authority areas, such as thin plastics. Thankfully, the Environment Bill currently going through Parliament is proving a catalyst for change, levelling up recycling rates right across the country. It is looking increasingly likely that from early 2023, we’ll be able to oﬀer you the chance to recycle glass, thin plastics (pots, tubs and trays) and Tetra Pak-style cartons in our recycling bin. As well as providing a weekly food waste service. I will keep pushing for positive change.

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

A-Fest Andover is back! A-Fest, Andover’s Youth Festival, is back as a live stream on Saturday 22nd of May from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. A-Fest showcases opportunities for 5-18-year-olds in and around Andover and invites organisations, youth groups and local businesses to get involved and promote the services they offer to this age group. Running since 2015, A-Fest has become a flagship event in the Andover calendar. “It is wonderful to have found a way to make sure it continues this year and beyond. Like 2020, Covid -19 restrictions mean that we can not yet hold a physical event in Andover High Street, and so we have adapted and moved online,” says Katherine Bird, who is a member of the organising team. In 2020 over 500 people watched the event live. Last year, Chat Together organisers Katherine Bird and Catherine Randle worked with Dmitrijs Meiksans, a local Member of Youth Parliament, who hosted and ensured the day’s smooth running. They are delighted to announce that he is a part of the A-Fest 2021 team, ensuring that the youth voice still is central to the event. “Dmitrijs is Unity’s youth ambassador and published a thorough report about issues important to the young people of Andover. We will be working to see if our festival can provide some answers to questions raised or help facilitate young adults providing their own solutions,” says Cat Randle 34

As part of making sure that the achievements of A-Fest in bringing people together continues all year, Chat Together is creating a website directory of youth activities that will highlight every organisation in the Andover area. Unity Embraces Technology Embracing technology is a challenge for many people but a more of a necessity now, particularly since the pandemic has forced people into lockdown for months. Loneliness is a huge issue too for many people who have been isolated and may not be technologically inclined. Unity, a Test Valley based charity, have been in the thick of the pandemic, co-ordinating the Community Helpline, recruiting and managing the Covid vaccination volunteers programme and providing friendship calls to isolated individuals up and down the Valley. Through all this work, they have recognised the need to people to become more digitally connected and to give them the support and confidence to help them shop online, connect to family and friends or just to spend time surfing the network for bargains. As a result, Unity are now celebrating as they have been successful in applying for two grants. One through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, to work with Veterans as Digital Champions and the second, through the Hampshire County Council, Local Solutions Fund to provide support to clinically extremely vulnerable and other isolated individuals who have been identified through these community services and through their links across the charity sector.

The Local Solutions Funding will also enable Unity to provide an online searchable Directory which will help people access information on local groups and charities as well as health services. This Directory along with a new Unity website is due to launch early April. Unity Chief Executive, Terry Bishop said, “Technology is changing he world and Unity is doing everything it can to help people access services and to connect to families in a diﬀerent way. This will be gentle support, at a level to suit people who are referred to us and will ultimately help them feel less lonely and more engaged. I had an idea to write a series of children’s books educating about climate change and waste, and giving life to some scenarios. I wrote my first book but had no money to pay for an illustrator. After a few months, I sent a plea around the local community... and p 2 illustrators replied! Caitlin, who does my characters, and Carla, who puts m them in the situations and creates the th incredible background scenes. in We went full steam ahead – queue weekly peppermint tea meetings either via zoom, or once restrictions eased, outside under a large umbrella when it rained! I decided to figure out how to self-publish. We became the 3Cs and spent hours crafting the first in the series of adventures about the Eco Protection Squad! The book focuses on littering in the park and recycling, after seeing all the littering that occurred in parks during the Covid-19 pandemic it became the first story.. I printed the books and am working on an eBook version along with an audiobook. Adventure 2 is in the pipeline too!

I started a project in late November to build a Shepherd's Hut for our grandchildren’s Christmas present to play with in our garden. It is a copy of an original style hut, but half size complete with seat/ folding bed and a kitchen and led� lighting. This started with just the four cast iron wheels followed by building the chassis in metal and wooden framework and corrugated cladding. It has kept me occupied for approximately 10 weeks. - Colin Simpson

Waste of Space: Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Launch appeal appeal to help turn unloved spaces into vital natural space

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust launch public appeal to help turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. Today, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust launch ‘Waste of Space’, a public appeal to help identify the unloved scraps of land in our towns and cities that could, and should, do much more for people and nature. Natural and wild places have provided a lifeline for people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight over the past year, providing essential outside space to relax, exercise, play and spend time with friends and family. Access to these wild spaces and connection to nature is known to benefit people’s physical and mental health, leading to reductions in depression, anxiety and obesity and strengthening people’s immune systems. However, the pandemic has highlighted vast inequalities in access to green and natural spaces. One in eight households have no garden and rely entirely on public open spaces, particularly in urban areas. In a survey conducted by the Trust in June 2020, over 96% of people said that nature played an important role in relieving stress during lockdown and expressed a need for more natural space in our towns and cities. Urban wild spaces provide many wider benefits for people and nature. They create healthier communities, reduce loneliness and social isolation and provide safe places for children to play. They also provide cleaner air, combat climate change, help reduce flooding and act as havens for wildlife as part of a county-wide Nature Recovery Network. The Trust is asking local people to map the ‘wasted space’ in their communities, the unloved scraps of land around our houses and streets that could, and should, do much more for people and nature. This could include tall buildings with the potential to have swift boxes on, paved over surfaces which could be filled with colourful planters or simply a space which needs a litter pick and a place to sit to

transform it. The Trust want local people to help find creative ways to make space for nature within our towns and cities. Debbie Tann, CEO of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “Wildlife has been squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces just at the time when people need nature more than ever for their health and wellbeing. Our Wilder 2030 campaign is calling for 30% of land and sea to be restored for nature by 2030, and for people to join us in taking action for wildlife. This is important if we are to reverse wildlife declines but it's vital for people and communities too. This must be the decade of nature’s recovery and rewilding our lives. Any area, no matter how small, will contribute to a Nature Recovery Network, and help rewild where we live. This will help transform towns and cities into places where wildlife can thrive and people are happier and healthier.” Becky Fisher, Acting Director of Advocacy & Engagement at the Trust, says: “Access to wild spaces should not be a luxury enjoyed only by those in the leafy parts of our counties. We must work with local people to map areas that are a ‘waste of space’ across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Once we have found these wasted spaces, we will encourage people to join forces with their friends and neighbours to create wild spaces for urban dwellers and breathe natural life back into our towns and cities. “Our Wilder Communities Officers, will provide support and advice, including how to talk to your local council, ways to identify what wildlife might already be living in your community, and how to make a space that benefits people and wildlife. Our ambivalence to recycling coffee cups has become one of the major ﬂaws in recycling action, with eco groups keen to add dedicated cup deposit points in coffee shop., Better still, they’ve started encouraging us to bring our own reusable vessels into cafes.

STAR GAZING Welcome to the April Stargazing Page. This year April is a quiet month astronomically, but there are a few highlights including Leo the Lion, Mars still hanging on in there in the western sky, and the return of Venus as the Evening Star.

Interna onal Space Sta on The ISS will be visible between 1 - 4th April between 8.30 – 9.30pm, and then again between 3 – 5am from 28th – 30th. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com, or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to Andover.

Moon This month’s full moon occurs on 27th April, and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Pink, Seed, and Egg Moon.

Object of the Month The familiar winter constellations are now setting by 10pm, leaving the spring constellations to take all the glory. The brightest of these is Leo the Lion, which has been recognised as a constellation for over 2,000 years, and is said to represent the lion slain by the Greek hero Heracles (Hercules to the Romans) as one of his twelve labours. The lion's mane and shoulders form a recognisable pattern of stars (known as an� asterism)� called the �The Sickle�, which resembles a backwards question mark (see ﬁgure). Regulus, the brightest star in Leo, is Latin for ‘little king’, or ‘prince’. Look for Leo moderately-high in the south between 9.30 – 10pm. Leo is the 12th largest constellation in the sky, easily covering an outstretched hand-span at arm’s length.

Mercury Mercury is hidden by the Sun’s glare until the ﬁnal few days of April when it reappears close to Venus, low in the evening sky (see ﬁgure).

Venus Like its small neighbour, Venus is also lost in the Sun’s glare until mid-month when it can be spotted very low in the west just after sunset. It has vanished below the horizon by 9.15pm.

Mars The red planet is dimming faster now, but can still be seen fairly high in the southwestern sky around 9pm, and is joined by the Moon on the 17th.

Jupiter and Saturn Due to the clocks going forward, the solar system’s largest planets are easy to spot before sunrise, and are well-placed for viewing around 6am at the start of the month, but by mid-month are best viewed at 5am. The Moon joins them to make a pleasing skyscape on the 6th and 7th. 46

In astronomy, the zodiac (or ecliptic) represents the annual path of the Sun across the sky, and the zodiacal constellations are those through which it passes. The twelve familiar signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. However, the Sun’s path also crosses a corner of Ophiuchus the Water Bearer, and touches the boundary of Cetus the Whale. Half of the Sun’s disk is in Cetus for less than a day, a brief but valid visit, bringing the total number of zodiacal constellations to fourteen.

She Drives Me Crazy Why do women get cheaper car insurance? If equality is such a buzzword of our time, how come the action of treating men and women equally doesn’t stretch as far as car insurance premiums?! Since Henry Ford ﬁrst put his set of wheels on the road, it’s always been the case that the cost of insuring a car for a male driver is considerably more expensive than that of female counterparts. Obviously the longer you’re behind the wheel, the more chance of an accident, and that likelihood comes at a price! THREE - Occupation Your job will have a lot to do with the premium you’re offered. Interestingly, aspiring footballers have some of the highest premiums going, while other job roles such as delivery drivers, doormen, carpenter assistants and even car wash attendants have signiﬁcantly higher than average insurance

costs levelled on them… and yes, all these are maledominated roles. FOUR - Driving habits And of course, as was alluded to at the start, men are naturally more aggressive than women, and that is reflected in driving habits and the premiums that follow. However unfair such a generalisation may seem, insurance companies stick firmly to the idea that women are safer drivers and less likely to have accidents. Getting to the point where this changes may mean having to alter the very genetics of the human race! And yet, irrespective of your gender, there are a number of ways in which you can begin to lower your car insurance costs, including parking your car in a secure location, paying a higher excess, paying for insurance in a lump sum up front, reducing your mileage, fitting a telematics device and, of course, shopping around for the best deal.

Wall to Wall Why the cult of the feature wall is back in fashion. Around the turn of the Millennium, we found ourselves confronted with a new dawn, with new realities. There were mobile phones, tablet computers and, perhaps best of all, the ‘feature wall’. The term, otherwise known as an ‘accent wall’, invited home interior design experimenters to thrown caution to the wind in giving one side of a room a new lease of life, either through repainting or wallpapering in a different colour. The feature wall concept therefore became a goto idea, be that for bedrooms, living spaces or even kitchens. They were regarded as a great way of redesigning a space without making a big investment - a day’s worth of work that would transform a room for years to come; or perhaps just a few months, depending on your desire to keep reinventing what could quickly become a versatile and adaptable space. As the Noughties progressed though, our desire to stand out became less prevalent, and tastes merged rather more towards ﬂat colours and drops

of detail, rather than one big, brave, statement wall. And yet, here in 2021, the whispers are that the feature wall is about to make a triumphant return. In interior design just as in fashion, it’s supposed that a period of repression and conﬁnement – such as the one we’re still living through in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic – does

ONE - Complement, don’t confuse The temptation with a feature wall is to bring about a complete shift in focus from the rest of the room, but in actual fact even the subtlest of changes will make a big noise, given that this will be a standout wall, with all the others remaining the same. So use colours and textures that feel different, but still work with existing colours, furniture, ﬂoor coverings and styles that are in the room.

Harrow Way welcomes students, teachers and staff back Harrow Way Community School has opened its doors to students following nine weeks of remote learning. Teachers, staff and students were all back on site for the first time since Christmas for some much welcome face to face teaching. Commenting on the sight of a busy, bustling school, Headteacher Michael Serridge said: “I couldn’t be prouder of how the whole school community has embraced home learning but nothing beats having students back in school. The building feels alive again and we are ready, resourced and have everything in place to build on the great work, students and their families put in during lockdown. I am determined that these students will not be a ‘lost generation’ and will receive a quality education which stands them in good stead for successful futures.” In the week preceding the reopening the school conducted 1,600 lateral flow tests to ensure

students and staff returning were safe to do so. Students will take two further tests during their return to school before continuing with a twice weekly testing schedule, which they will do at home. Recognising that home learning is heavy on screen time, students were given a ‘digital detox day.’ As one of their final remote tasks, students were encouraged to take time away from their screens and enjoy some other offline activities. The brief was to have fun, try not to use a screen (pc, tablet or phone) or the word ‘google’. Mr Serridge concludes: “Now students are back in school they will get to enjoy face to face learning and just as importantly is all the other hands on and enrichment activities which are all part of a meaningful curriculum and education.”

Six tips to help you get to grips with your unruly garden in no time. ONE - Focus on the lawn Your lawn is ultimately what leads your eye out into the garden, so keeping this well mown, clutter free and healthy is arguably the biggest factor in it retaining a tidy feel. FOUR - Evergreens every time Evergreen varieties are very handy for all-year-round foliage and variety; and adding a plentiful array of evergreens to your garden means you can avoid pruning, deadheading, staking, weeding and all those other things involved with perennials that take up valuable time that could be spent on other tasks… such a relaxing!

FIVE - What weeds? If the idea of spending hours picking out a smorgasbord of weeds from your beds doesn’t appeal then wood mulch it’s almost certainly the solution. Not only does it look great, it adds texture and colour too and is a great tool for keeping moisture in the soil, something that will come in handy when the baking sun of the summer months begins to dominate the day. SIX - Take a fake Finally, probably the best low maintenance addition of them all - fake grass. The technology these days means the look is almost as good as having a real lawn, and if you’re brave enough to take it a step further, then fake shrubs can decorate difﬁcult to reach or hard to maintain corners of your garden in a way that will need little maintenance, whilst offering big impact.

Viewing Valley Park, Chandler’s Ford from local paths

Wrien by Malcolm Price This month’s walk takes into account the extremely wet winter we have experienced and as a result also, the overly muddy footpaths that enthusiastic lockdown walkers have accentuated. This means that the chosen walk is almost entirely along tarmac or gravel footpaths; almost all of which are dedicated footways (some shared with cyclists), with minimal interaction with vehicular traﬃc. The selected start point is Knightwood Leisure Centre, Skys Wood Road, Valley Park, Chandlers Ford, SO53 4SJ

where there is a large car park, as well as a play park, BMX track and skateboard circuit. The walk is around 5 miles (8Km) with no hills to climb, just a couple of railway footbridges to cross. To start, we need to aim back to the entrance gate, turning right along the path for just 200 metres before crossing Skys Wood Road and entering a footpath gate aiming to Tredgoulds Copse. This woodland stretch, with a good compacted gravel trail extends for some 600 metres as far as a gate at a T junction and forms part of a nature reserve.

the main road, School Lane. Once again we turn left along the path for just 150 metres where we pick up a tempting looking path on the left.

We must take the left hand option which winds it’s way round an old drovers track and at the end of almost a kilometre, finishes by Castle Lane. We have our own path here as we turn left along the shared cycleway and in around 400 metres we meet a set of traffic lights. We need to cross two segments of these lights – first over to the right onto a grass verge, then across again to the left side of the main road. We are now beside the housing, as we walk up right as far as the bus shelter where there is a path neatly tucked behind.

For the next ten minutes we will be listening to bird life from the Nature Reserve Titlark Copse on our right, with 300 metres until the next, right hand, turn and a sign post informing us that the station is 1 mile away. This wide tarmac path is bordered by houses on the left and greenways or woodlands on the right, along with the company of Monks Brook that we cross twice on the way to Chandlers Ford Station. Pause a while at these bridges as a kind local has installed ‘Pooh Sticks’ holders, which are regularly kept ﬁlled with suitable length sticks to play the time honoured game from Winnie The Pooh. On arrival at the station

Do not go past the shelter. Being the end of a cul de sac, there is only one way forward, along another section of Castle Lane, which should take us up to

We now have an uninterrupted trip of some 800 metres where we can enjoy the stream and woodlands on the right and playing ﬁelds with Knight Wood extending over to the left. Just before we depart the very end of this Park we need to turn left up a narrow tarmac section, up to the small car park and turn right down the lane. In just 150 metres we meet Katrine Crescent which needs another left turn up to Knightwood Road. At some, safe stage, we must cross over to the right on Knightwood Road, with around 600 metres to walk as far as the next roundabout; cross directly over along the main route for 150 metres up to a sheltered entrance and into Valley Park on the right. There just remains 200 metres along this gravel path, then a left and a further 300 metres on more gravel as far as the Leisure Centre car park. Well earned refreshments are generally available a short distance away at The Cleveland Bay, when opening restrictions permit.

Kitchen Sink Cookies Introduction

Featuring a much-feted ﬂavour proﬁle – salty and sweet - these decadent cookies are a great way to use up any leftover bits and bobs in your pantry, and taste far more sophisticated than their name suggests.

Ingredients

As this dough requires time to set in the fridge, you can easily store half of it in the freezer to enjoy at a later date.

(makes approximately 20 cookies) • 300g all-purpose ﬂour • 1tsp baking soda • 200g dark brown sugar • 100g white sugar • 180g unsalted butter (softened) • 1 egg • 1tsp salt • 1tsp vanilla extract • 180g sweet treats: chocolate chips or chunks, honeycomb, mini marshmallows, dried fruit, Smarties… • 180g salty treats: nuts, broken up pretzels, sea salt ﬂakes, popcorn, sesame seeds, ready-salted crisps…

Method 1. In a bowl gently mix together your ﬂour, baking soda and salt. Then, in a separate larger bowl cream together your butter and sugar, either by hand or using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Once ﬂuffy and light in colour, add the egg and vanilla extract before folding in your dry ingredients. 2. Combine all your salty and sweet treats, before gently mixing into your dough until they are evenly distributed. Roll your dough into a log – approx. 1.5 inches in diameter – to be

wrapped in cling ﬁlm and chilled in the fridge for at least one hour, and up to two days. 3. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 170 degrees (160 for fan-assisted ovens) or gas mark 3, and prepare two baking trays with baking paper. Cut your dough into 1/2-inch-thick slices and arrange the cookies on your trays, before baking for around 20 minutes until golden. Leave to set for at least ﬁve minutes once out the oven before transferring to a wire cooling rack.

• Be as bold as you like with your ﬂavour combinations as this really is a recipe where you can let your personality shine through, as you think about ﬂavours, textures and even colours that will make your cookies special. • For extra pizzaz, make your own salted caramel chunks by melting two parts sugar to one part butter in a pan until golden, adding a generous pinch of sea-salt before pouring onto a baking tray to set.
