The missing pieces in the puzzle

nce the runoff elections finished on November 27th, the team for the City of Doral authorities became complete. With that election, ended an intense year of uncertainties and campaigns and came the time of turning the page and continue working for the improvement and progress of this ‘micropolis’* we call home. After the first round, Doral Family Journal interviewed Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, on her first impressions when assuming her new post and the first steps she was taking to comply with her campaign promises. Now we had the chance to cover the same aspects with Councilwomen Christi Fraga and Sandra Ruiz and the new Mayor Luigi Boria, who along with current Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez complete the picture of the City of Doral Council. Expectations from Doral citizens are diverse and multiple. They include improvements on transit; increase on protection and safety in the streets
and schools of the city; improvement of current recreational facilities and promotion and support for businesses and entrepreneurs. On the interviews that follow, the newly elected officials share how they were welcomed by City staff and other authorities; they also discuss the adjustment process related with giving structure to the new team and their first measures to be discussed on the last meeting of the year, intended to be implemented before the end of the year. They all agree on calling for conciliation, unity and support by all citizens, as well as teamwork as the keys that will strengthen current institutions and will move the City towards the progress and the bright future we all desire. * Micropolis: n. xtremely generous with his time, Luigi Boria did open a spot on his busy schedule to talk to Doral Family Journal. However, the protocol to access an interview with him has had to change a little, because nowadays Luigi Boria is not only an elected official; by becoming the Mayor he is now the official spokesman for the City. He argues that the best moment of the mayoral campaign certainly was being proclaimed winner with 55% of the votes, as it represented for him and his team the culmination of all their hard work, and also proved his reputation and image permeated the electorate the right way to ensure the most votes. “What really matters are reputation, image, values and principles and what people know about you. No matter how much others criticize you; those who know you are not going to allow your image to deteriorate.” He considers himself fortunate to have received support not only from the Venezuelans, that may have been identified with the common origin, but also from people of Colombia, Argentina, Cuba and many other nationalities represented in the city. He wants to reach to the other 45% of Doral citizens who did not vote for him; for them his message is one of harmony and hard work: “We must begin to see the city as something that belongs to us all. We have to have a sense of ownership of the place where we live and work in order to improve, to do things for the benefit of others. People are convinced and aware that we can work together and have a proper attitude showing leadership through persuasion, and that whatever is done will go to benefit the city. “ The first step Boria took on his crusade for harmony and the common good, was the day of the inauguration when he gathered former Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and former Councilman Pete
Cabrera and made them share a handshake signaling that “the fight is over, now comes unity, brotherhood and hard work for the city.” First steps as Mayor: Among the first things that had to be done was the recruitment of a new interim Manager for the City, due to the retirement of Mrs. Yvonne Soler-McKinley. About Mr. Merrett Stierheim, Boria says that he is “a highly experienced person who brings a vast knowledge on public administration and leadership;
he gives confidence to the staff. That will end the rumors of lay-offs, because we have no intention to remove and cut but capitalize on what has been done and built. We will build on the foundations we have, to achieve good things for the city “. Boria declares any other change in key personnel of the city will be decided by the Manager: “We have selected a person extremely capable as Mr. Stierheim and definitely I have full confidence he will do a great job. He will perform evaluations and based on the results he will decide exactly whether or not someone stays. I leave it in the hands of the Administrator who is the person responsible for that task, according to the charter of the City”. However, for a designation that falls under his responsibility, Boria did nominate Mrs. Sandra Ruiz as Vice-Mayor, due to her seniority in the government of Doral. “Despite all controversy, Sandra Ruiz is a person with vast experience; she worked eight years on the Council, knows the city from its origins and for me to have an experienced person next to me is very important. Anyway, the Vice-Mayor is a rotating position, nominal, and whoever holds it may prove her skills through a year. I will really alternate the nominees for the position, therefore other people can get prepared, collect the experience and of course next year someone else will be nominated”. Regarding the way government is defined within the City Council, Boria comments that “the Doral City Council is governed by consensus. The motto is ‘we are going to work for the city’, no matter what,” Among other achievements, Boria wants to undertake various infrastructure works as promised in his campaign, like completing the cycle route and build the park at 114th Avenue and 80th Street. Additionally wants to “strengthen incentives for trade, an expansion of 25th Street and 117 Avenue,

You are going to show people that you are different through accomplishing things that could never have been achieved in normal terms, and by being persistent, daring and having faith, without mixing religion with politics. In the Council, I am not here to impose my ideology, but to show a way of life: we have values, integrity, and ethics, and to put them in practice you show that, if you can, there are decisions made based on the word of God that people do not even realize they are. There are simple behavior and life traits that many people have in them because they know how to behave as God intended, and that people also make a difference. “ To stay close to citizens, Luigi Boria keeps his Twitter and Facebook accounts running, the same that he used during the campaign, in spite of no longer having time to update them as often as he wishes; in addition, much information will come out by the official media outlets of the city and not personal accounts. “Luigi Boria remains the same. Now, the Mayor of Doral has different channels of communication, like the webpage of the city. I am 24/7, whatever happens I will be attending all it takes, the same way I was doing during the campaign and even more now as Mayor of the City”. A personal message for the New Year: With the simplicity that characterizes him, Mayor Boria finishes the interview by declaring “what you see is what I am. No matter who you have supported in the campaign, now we have a city that we need to move forward together.”

this country and represent all nationalities of the city. Of course I defend my roots, I’m from Venezuela and I understand that people have expectations, but my only real plan to all Hispanics and Latin Americans is that I will work hard to create adaptation programs. We must understand that we are in the United States of America and you have to respect the laws and American culture. For me it is very important to convince people that we need to work together to adapt as quickly as possible to this culture.” In a short term, Boria contemplates the idea of preparing a book about his experience, with the desire to serve as a guide to others for learning how to manage successfully in this country, to be involved in the community and contribute effectively, for example through public service. It will be a guide that includes “all those things that help others to adapt to this culture. It is important that we pass on the experience we have had and we leave a legacy for generations. I’ve become a spearhead for others, to show that if you want, you can make a difference and set an example if you want and help other nations or cities to be better.” Being the Mayor: a 24/7 job, supported by faith Luigi Boria’s day starts early at City Hall. At 7:00 am he arrives to his office to get ready, pray, read the newspapers and plan. His faith gives him strength, above all because it gives him the power to lead by example: “In my two years as a councilman I was never hitting anyone in his head with a Bible. The

and persuade the County for space to build a bypass area for Doral”. And that just to begin with, because he has many more ideas to put into practice, and also to include proposals from councilmembers. “Every day there are new dreams, some people have other dreams they want to develop. All this will go along with the work of all committees.” Venezuelan Mayor, blessed among women: Luigi Boria believes that working with four women as council members will be very productive, “at the last meeting we all agreed and we were able to discuss on what we thought; and voted to approve. That shows that there are good intentions on all councilmembers, that they love and care for the city, that they are looking for a common purpose and that the role of women is increasing in society.” A sector of the Venezuelan population of Doral assumed Boria’s victory as its own. Boria, who was born in Venezuela of Italian parents, has lived in the U.S. for 23 years and is an U.S. citizen. He sees this as a reflection of the strength and influence Venezuelan immigration has in this country, and in the development of this City. Although he appreciates the support and the international broadcast news of his election, as the first Venezuelan to reach a position as a U.S. elected official, Boria was emphatic in stressing that at no time he plans to show preference for anyone, even if they are from his same country of origin, because “you have to understand that I am American, I have years in

on el resultado de las elecciones del 27 de Noviembre, se completó el equipo de trabajo en la Alcaldía de Doral. Se cierra un tenso año de campaña e incertidumbre en la ciudad y es ahora el momento de pasar la página para continuar trabajando por el progreso de esta ‘micrópolis’* que llamamos nuestro hogar. Al terminar la primera vuelta electoral, Doral Family Journal entrevistó a la Concejal Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, sobre sus impresiones al tomar posesión de su cargo como oficial electo y sus primeras medidas para poner en práctica sus promesas electorales. Hacemos ahora lo propio con la Concejal Sandra Ruiz, la Concejal Christi Fraga y el nuevo Alcalde Luigi Boria, quienes en conjunto con la actual Concejal Ana María Rodríguez, completan el cuadro de la Alcaldía de Doral. Las expectativas de los ciudadanos son muchas y muy variadas, incluyendo mejoras en el tránsito vehicular de la ciudad; incremento en la pro-
tección y seguridad en las calles y las escuelas; ampliación de la infraestructura recreacional existente y promoción del desarrollo de pequeñas y medianas empresas en la ciudad. En las entrevistas a continuación los nuevos oficiales electos, las piezas que faltaban para completar el cuadro del Gobierno Municipal de Doral, hablan de la bienvenida que han recibido de parte del personal de la Alcaldía, del proceso de ajuste a trabajar con el nuevo equipo y de las primeras medidas en agenda que esperan sean puestas en práctica antes de fin de año. xtremadamente amable y generoso con su tiempo, Luigi Boria logró sacar un rato de su apretada agenda para conversar con Doral Family Journal. Aún a su pesar, el protocolo para acceder a una entrevista con él ha tenido que variar un poco pues Luigi Boria no es solamente un oficial electo; al convertirse en Alcalde es el Vocero Oficial de la Ciudad. Sostiene que el mejor momento de la campaña por la Alcaldía fue sin duda ser notificado de su triunfo con un 55%, pues representó para el y su equipo el premio al esfuerzo y trabajo, adicionalmente que le demostró que su reputación e imagen calaron en el electorado de la manera correcta para asegurarle la mayoría de votos. “Lo que vale es la reputación, la imagen, los valores y los principios que la gente conocen de ti. Por mucho que otros traten, quienes te conocen saben quien eres y la gente no va a permitir que tu imagen se deteriore”. Se considera afortunado de haber recibido apoyo no solo de los venezolanos que pudieran haberse identificado con el por el origen común, sino también de colombianos, argentinos, cubanos y muchas otras nacionalidades representadas en la ciudad. No pierde de vista sin embargo el otro 45% de los ciudadanos de Doral que no le apoyaron con el voto; para ellos su mensaje es de concordia y de trabajo: “Tenemos que empezar a ver la ciudad como algo que nos pertenece a todos. Tenemos que tener un sentido de pertenencia del lugar donde vivimos y trabajar en función de mejorar, de hacer cosas en beneficio de los demás. La gente esta convencida y consciente que tenemos que colaborar y tener una actitud propia de liderazgo que muestre a través de la persuasión que lo que se haga va a ir en beneficio de la ciudad”. Y el primer paso que Boria dio para refrendar su mensaje de concordia por el bien común, fue el día de
la juramentación cuando reunió en un apretón de manos al Ex Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez y al Ex Concejal Pete Cabrera “Se acabó la pelea, ahora viene la unión, la fraternidad y vamos a trabajar por la ciudad”. Primeras medidas como Alcalde: Entre las primeras actividades que ha tenido que realizar se encuentra el reclutamiento de un nuevo Administrador interino para la ciudad por el retiro de la
Sra. Yvonne Soler-McKinley. Sobre el Sr. Merrett Stierheim, Boria expresa que es “una persona sumamente experimentada que trae un vasto conocimiento de la administración publica, sabe liderar y da confianza al personal. Se terminan los rumores de despido, porque nosotros no tenemos intención de eliminar y cortar sino de capitalizar lo que se ha hecho y construir. Somos constructores sobre las bases que ya se han hecho para lograr cosas buenas para la ciudad”
Declara Boria que cualquier otro cambio en el personal clave de la ciudad será decidido por el Administrador: “hemos seleccionado a una persona extraordinariamente capaz como es el Sr. Stierheim y definitivamente tengo la plena confianza que hará un excelente trabajo. Él va a evaluar y de esa evaluación vendrá un resultado y allí sabremos exactamente si alguien se va o no. Yo lo dejo en manos del administrador que es la persona que por el acta constitutiva de la ciudad tiene la responsabilidad de esa actividad”. A quien sí nominó Boria fue el cargo de Vice-Alcaldesa, que recayó en la Sra. Sandra Ruiz por su experiencia previa en el gobierno de la ciudad: “A pesar de toda la controversia, Sandra Ruiz es una persona con una vasta experiencia, estuvo 8 años en el concejo, conoce las raíces de la ciudad desde sus origines y para mi tener una persona con experiencia a mi lado es muy importante. De todas maneras el Vice-Alcalde es un cargo rotativo, nominal, y ella puede por si misma demostrar sus habilidades a través de este año. Yo pienso hacer el cargo verdaderamente rotativo para que las otras personas se preparen y obtengan la experiencia y por supuesto el próximo año lo nominaremos diferente.” Comenta Boria sobre el modo de gobierno en la Alcaldía que “en el Concejo Municipal de Doral se gobierna en consenso. Aquí es ‘vamos a trabajar por la ciudad’; no importa el que quiera tener arrogancia o altivez y no estoy diciendo que ninguna del Concejo la tenga. Aquí dominará el que verdaderamente quiera servir”. Entre otros logros, Boria quiere lo mas pronto posible acometer varias obras de infraestructura que prometió en su campaña como son concluir la ciclo vía y construir el parque en la 114 avenida y la 80 calle. Adicionalmente quiere “reforzar los incentivos para comercio; impulsar la ampliación de la calle 25 y la avenida 117
City | Ciudad momento he estado golpeando a nadie con la Biblia en la cabeza. El ejemplo marca la diferencia. Tu le vas a mostrar a la gente que eres diferente a través de lograr cosas que otros no podrían haber logrado nunca en términos normales, y nosotros lo haremos siendo persistentes, atreviéndonos y teniendo fe, sin necesidad de mezclar la religión con la política. En el concejo yo no vengo, a imponer mi ideología, sino a mostrar una condición de vida: tenemos valores, integridad, ética para ponerlos en practica y a través de la practica demostrar que si se puede, que hay decisiones que se toman basadas en la palabra de Dios que la gente no se da ni cuenta y simplemente son comportamiento de vida, que mucha gente los tiene porque saben comportarse como Dios manda, y hacen también la diferencia.” Para mantenerse cercano a los ciudadanos Luigi Boria mantiene activas su cuenta de Twitter y de Facebook que utilizó durante la campaña, aun cuando ya no tiene el tiempo de actualizarlas con la frecuencia que desearía; además, mucha información tendrá que salir por los medios oficiales de la ciudad y no por sus cuentas personales. “Luigi Boria sigue siendo el mismo. Ahora, el Alcalde de Doral tiene un canal directo que es la página de la ciudad. Soy 24/7; cualquier cosa que suceda yo voy a estar atendiendo todo lo que haga falta. Lo estuve haciendo durante la campaña y mas aún ahora como Alcalde de la Ciudad”. Con la sencillez que le caracteriza, el Alcalde Boria comenta como despedida que “lo que tú ves es lo que yo soy. No importa a quien apoyaban en la campaña; ahora tenemos una ciudad que tenemos que echar pa’lante todos juntos”.

supuesto que defiendo mis raíces, vengo de Venezuela y entiendo que la gente tenga expectativas, pero mi único y verdadero plan hacia todos los hispanos y latinoamericanos es que voy a trabajar fuertemente para crear programas de adaptación. Tenemos que entender que estamos en los Estados Unidos de América y hay que respetar las leyes y la cultura americana. Para mi es muy importante convencer a la gente que tenemos que trabajar en conjunto para adaptarnos lo mas rápido posible a esta cultura”. Boria contempla a corto plazo la idea de preparar un libro contando su experiencia, con el deseo de que sirva a otras personas como guía para conocer como manejarse exitosamente en este país, como participar en la comunidad y como aportar efectivamente, por ejemplo a través del servicio público. Será una guía que incluya “todos esos temas que ayudan a otras personas a que se adapten a esta cultura. Es importante que nosotros transmitamos la experiencia que hemos tenido y que dejemos un legado a otras generaciones. Yo me he convertido en una punta de lanza para otros, para demostrar que si se puede, que podemos hacer la diferencia y dar el ejemplo si queremos y ayudar a otras naciones o ciudades para que sean iguales o mejores que nosotros” La Alcaldía: un trabajo 24/7 con el motor de la fé Luigi Boria comienza muy temprano su día en la Alcaldía. A las 7:00 am ya está en su oficina para prepararse, orar, leer los periódicos y planificar. Su fe lo mueve por encima de todo y a ello atribuye el poder liderar con el ejemplo: “En mis dos años como concejal en ningún

y convencer al condado de que nos de un área para construir el bypass para Doral”. Y eso solo como abrebocas, porque tiene muchas mas ideas que poner en práctica, además de incluir las propuestas de las concejales “Cada día hay sueños nuevos, hay gente que tiene otros sueños que quiere desarrollar. Todo eso va a ir naciendo del trabajo mancomunado de todos los comités que se desarrollarán.” El Alcalde “venezolano” Bendito entre las mujeres: Considera que el trabajo con cuatro mujeres como concejales va a ser muy productivo: “en la última reunión todos nos pudimos poner de acuerdo y coincidimos en lo que pensábamos; votamos positivamente y eso demuestra que hay buena intención en todas las concejales, que quieren a la ciudad, que buscan un fin común y que el rol de la mujer va en aumento en la sociedad”. Un sector de la población venezolana de Doral asumió como propio el triunfo de Boria, quien nació en Venezuela de padres italianos, pero ha vivido en los EEUU los últimos 23 años y es ciudadano Americano, viéndolo como reflejo de la fuerza y peso que la inmigración de ese país tiene en el desarrollo de la ciudad. Agradeciendo el apoyo recibido y la difusión internacional que la noticia de su elección como el primer venezolano que alcanza un puesto de oficial electo en los EEUU, Boria fue enfático al recalcar que en ningún momento piensa mostrar preferencia por nadie, aunque sean de su mismo país de origen porque “hay que entender que yo soy Americano, yo tengo años en este país y represento todas las nacionalidades de la ciudad. hose who know the labor of Sandra Ruiz, know beforehand that she is a woman who has proven to be dedicated to public service and to her community. Perhaps that is why her political aspirations do not seem to cease. After taking part of the City Council of Doral in 2003 and 2006, Ruiz decides to return to the Doral’s political life with her nomination for City Council and victorious triumph at the last City of Doral’s election on November 7. Ruiz, who now occupies Seat 1 at the City Council of Doral, was chosen by a 3-2 vote at the past City Council Meeting on December 4 to become the new Vice Mayor of Doral. “Although I am very proud as a woman, I do not feel that there is a difference in being one of four women on the Council,” said Ruiz. “On the contrary, I think we have the opportunity to demonstrate that a Council integrated, mostly by women, can do great things for this city.” Today, Ruiz returns to the Government Center happy and grateful for the receptiveness shown by Doral residents not only with her political campaign but also thorughout her work for the city the several past years. “The City of Doral begins a new stage. Now the issues are going to be different than the ones we faced in past years,” Ruiz said. When Ruiz joined the Council in 2003, the main focus at that time was to create the municipality, its departments and setting a vision for the City of Doral. At present, the city is looking forward to continue its development, as well as protect and maintain the facilities that have been built for the community. “We have already invested enough now we must secure the future of the city by making sure we have enough resources to sustain the programs that have been implemented in the community,” Ruiz said. Although it is too early to talk about specific projects for the City of Doral, Ruiz already has several issues that constitute a priority in her agenda. In her interest for improving the quality of life for the residents of Doral, Ruiz wants to propose and implement a concrete and inmediate solution to the traffic problem that occurs in certain areas of Doral. “It is not fair that a resident of Doral spends more than forty minutes to get out of the Fiftyeighth Street and reach the Dolphin Expressway
or Flager,“ Ruiz said. “Specially when many of our residents do not work in Doral.” Another immediate priority for the Vice Mayor is to restore the confidence and spirits among the public workers of Doral. Ruiz mentions how in past years the City employees stopped working for the municipality not only because of layoffs but because some felt that several issues that happened in the city were not going according to their professional principles and therefore, they decided to resign. “I hope that through the City Manager we may be able to heal certain internal injuries within the administration of Doral,” Ruiz said. The Vice Mayor also emphasizes the importance of making the City of Doral a benchmark nationally and internationally. To Ruiz, the development at the Port of Miami is opening the door to all that is Latin America. She believes this movement can be an actual window for Doral to become known internationally. Among the community development programs, Ruiz hopes to implement plans like “Employ our Youth”, which would allow people as young as 16 and 17 to have a part-time job on their community parks without interfering with their education. “We want the City of Doral to continue marking
the positive emphasis that has been ticking throughout these years,” Ruiz said. In reference to the accusations made by parents regarding drug selling and consumption within Ronald Reagan High School, Ruiz says to be concern and emphasizes the importance of working together to prevent this from happening inside the Doral. “The approach by the police department should be much stronger. However, a police department alone will not be able to stop this from happening again, “ Ruiz said. “We have to work together with schools and parents to let them know that, there is not a field for this, either here in Doral or elsewhere in the county.” Surrounded by the chritmas spirit, Ruiz did not want to miss the opportunity to send a chritmas message to all readers and Doral residents wishing a Merry Christmas and her very best wishes in this new year that is about to begin. Also, she wants to encourage us all to thank and enjoy this special time of the year with family and loved ones. “To Doral Family Journal I want to congratulate you for your trajectory and for always bringing fresh and positive articles to the community,” said Ruiz. “My best wishes for this new year,” said Ruiz.

os que conocen la trayectoria de Sandra Ruiz, saben de antemano que es una mujer que ha demostrado estar dedicada al servicio público y a su comunidad. Es por esto quizás que sus aspiraciones políticas parecen no cesar. Después de formar parte del Concejo de la Ciudad de Doral en el 2003 y 2006, Ruiz decide retornar a la vida política de la ciudad con su postulación como Concejal y victorioso triunfo en las pasadas elecciones municipales del 27 de noviembre. Ruiz, quién ahora ocupa la silla 1 del Concejo Municipal de la ciudad de Doral, fue elegida 3 votos a 2 por la nueva Junta del Concejo el pasado 4 de diciembre para ocupar el cargo como Vice Alcaldesa de la ciudad. “Aunque me siento muy orgullosa como mujer no siento que haya diferencia en ser una de cuatro mujeres en el concejo,” dijo Ruiz. “Por el contrario creo que tenemos la oportunidad de demostrar que un concejo conformado mayormente por mujeres puede hacer grandes cosas para esta ciudad,” agregó. Hoy, Ruiz dice regresar a la alcaldía contenta y agradecida con la receptividad que mostraron los residentes de Doral no solo con su campaña política sino con la labor que por años ha prestado a la ciudad. “Doral comienza una nueva etapa. Ahora los temas van a ser diferentes a los temas que enfrentamos en años pasados,” expresó Ruiz. Cuando Sandra Ruiz entró al Concejo en el 2003, el enfoque para ese entonces era el de crear el municipio, sus distintos departamentos y el fijar una visión para la ciudad. En el presente, la ciudad esta mas enfocada en su continuo desarrollo, así como en resguardar y mantener las instalaciones que han sido construidas para la comunidad. “Ya se ha invertido lo suficiente ahora debemos asegurar el futuro de la ciudad, asegurándonos que hayan recursos suficientes para sostener los programas que se han implementado,” dijo Ruiz. Y aunque es muy pronto para hablar sobre
proyectos concretos para Doral, Sandra Ruiz ya tiene varias temas que constituyen una prioridad en su agenda. En pro de mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes de Doral, Ruiz desea proponer e implementar una solución tangible al problema víal que ocurre en determinadas áreas de la ciudad. “No es justo que un residente de Doral se tarde mas de cuarenta minutos en salir de la calle cincuenta y ocho y llegar al Dolphin Expressway o a la Flager; en especial cuando muchos de nuestros residentes no trabajan en el Doral,” dijo Ruiz. Otro de los enfoques inmediatos de la Vicealcaldesa es el de restablecer la confianza y el ánimo de los empleados públicos de la ciudad. Ruiz señaló que años pasados varios de los empleados de la ciudad dejaron de trabajar para el municipio no solo debido a despidos sino porque algunos consideraban que ciertas de las
cosas que ocurrían dentro de la misma no iban de acuerdo a sus principios profesionales. “Espero que por medio del Gerente de la ciudad, logremos sanar ciertas heridas internas dentro de la administración de Doral,” expresó Ruiz. La Vicealcaldesa resaltó también la importancia de convertir a la ciudad de Doral en un punto de referencia nacional e internacional. Ruiz explicó que el desarrollo del puerto de Miami está abriendo las puertas a todo lo que es Latinoamérica y este movimiento puede ser una ventana para el Doral de hacer presencia internacionalmente. Entre los programas de desarrollo comunitario, Ruiz espera que se implementen programas como “Emplea a nuestra juventud”, que permitiría a jóvenes entre los 16 y 17 años de edad, trabajar a medio tiempo dentro de los parques de la comunidad sin interferir con su educación. “Queremos que Doral siga marcando el énfasis positivo que ha ido marcando a lo largo de estos años ,” expresó Ruiz. En referencia a las recientes acusaciones de distintos medios y representantes por el uso y ventas de drogas dentro de la escuela secundaria Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High, Ruiz se mostró preocupada y reiteró la importancia de trabajar en equipo para que esto no siga ocurriendo dentro de la ciudad. “El enfoque por parte del Departamento de Policía debe ser mucho mas fuerte,” dijo Ruiz. “Sin embargo, debemos estar alerta; un solo departamento de policía no va a lograr detener este problema … Tenemos que trabajar conjuntamente con los padres y las escuelas y dejarles saber que, ni aquí en el Doral ni en otro sitio del condado, tendrán campo abierto para ello,” agregó. En estas vísperas decembrinas Ruiz no desaprovechó la oportunidad para enviarle a todos los lectores y residentes del Doral una feliz navidad , el mejor de los deseos en este nuevo año que esta próximo a comenzar. Christi Fraga : A Daughter for the City
C
hristi Fraga speaks fluent Spanish. Her grandparents got her used to it, and she can go back and forth between both languages, giving the conversation a very comfortable pace, and definitely the typical flavor of Doral youth, that segment of the population that she very properly represents. The youngest member of the City of Doral Council, she is a 26 year old enthusiast entrepreneur who was elected with 55% of votes in the runoff election, prevailing in the polls over the experience of previous Vice Mayor Robert Van Name and the achievements of Community Activist Bibiana Salmon who lost in the first round. Fraga speaks with great admiration and appreciation about both of them: “I respect them tremendously. We have a lot in common that we would love to see in this community, a lot of the same vision.” She is determined to work hard and live up to the expectations of the voters that gave her the chance of serving the city that has grown up along with her. Her commitment is evident and upon being elected she got down to work right away. She felt right at home on her new office at City Hall and was warmly welcomed. She is excited of working on an All-Councilwomen team with the leadership of Mayor Boria, as for her it is an opportunity for women to bring new dynamics to the city government. “To me as a young woman it is so enlightening, so wonderful to see. I can only imagine what will come later for other women, for new generations. It is great. I am excited to see how it is going to unroll. We have a lot of powerful women in one room and it might at times get difficult; it is going to be very interesting. Luigi knows how to handle women. He is always been nothing but respectful and I think he will be able to keep us united, control the emotions and think what is best for the city.” The ordeal of the campaign and becoming a Role Model It was a hard campaign for Christi. There were people really hostile and rude; there were times when it was stressful and tiring, but it did not demotivate her. The fuel that kept her going was realizing how much impact she can be on many people lives and finding out many young people in the city already saw her as a role model, just by the fact that she was running for public service. “I know there is going to be population that does not agree with me or not like what I do, but I can promise the community and the voters that I will make the best decisions possible. My motivation is this community, the people behind me”. “I want to be a role model to the youth in the community. I want to be not only a councilwoman but your sister, daughter, friend; that people see me close to them. I want children to think ‘I can do it because Christi did it’. I am a 26 year old woman that worked really hard, went to school and did what I wanted to do. It is very hard for young people to find a role model like that. I hope that I can be a role model for the youth in Doral, and anyone that might need guidance that I

can help with, my doors will always be open.” Words into action: her first proposition to the Council The first project Fraga is going to pursue as Councilwoman is the creation of the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) for the City of Doral. This team she defines as “a group of youth in the community, from 16 to 20, that want to make a difference, to get other young adults involved. That would not only look great on college applications because it shows responsibility and a sense of government, but we are going to actually take their advice, receive their input on policy making. It is really important because this is their future, this is their home”. For Fraga creating YAB will give young people in Doral the sense of involvement needed to prepare a new generation of leaders for the city that understand government and care enough to give their time and effort to public service. Just like her. ”I believe that I am setting the path for new leaders. As a young, Latina woman, I am opening the door for those coming behind me. It takes hard work, dedication. I think YAB is going to be a great addition to the City. I know we have a ton of advisory boards,
but this is one that will make a big impact on our schools and the city. These kids could be a really strong voice in our community. The Mayor appoints our boards therefore those interested would need to apply and will be chosen by the Council. They will need recommendation letters; it is going to be like a job interview for them”. Her commitment to support activities in Doral Public Schools One of the first activities Christi Fraga pursued upon deciding to run for office was getting well acquainted of the schools in Doral. Nonetheless, that young people and her parents is the population she wants to represent in the City Council. Now, she has become a well-known face in Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School, where she constantly attends PTSA meetings, functions and events. She wants to be able to speak of what she has seen at the school and help the community address issues timely, knowing firsthand the real magnitude and impact they might have. “I am more than willing to support the PTSAs on many initiatives that would need the support from the City. I am excited and want to be a voice for the youth, the kids and the parents.” Grateful and honored by the opportunity to serve “I am forever grateful, honored and humbled by the trust people have put in me. I won’t let you down. I will always be available because I do everything with an open heart and people have given me a huge opportunity. To those that did not support me, I am your councilmember as well. I will show you what I can do. We are all neighbors, my door is open, and I want to hear from them. I hope a second time around they support me without a question. I want to be serving
the community in the long term in the future if the community wants me to continue here”.

Christi Fraga: Una Hija para la Ciudad Por Maria Alejandra Pulgar
C
en la segunda vuelta con el 55% de los votos, superando en las urnas la experiencia previa del ExVice-Alcalde Robert Van Name y los logros de la Activista Comunitaria Bibiana Salmon quien había quedado atrás en la primera vuelta. Fraga habla con mucho aprecio y admiración sobre ambos contendientes: “Los respeto tremendamente. Tengo muchas ideas en común con ambos que quisiera ver materializadas en la comunidad. En muchos aspectos tenemos la misma visión.” Christi está muy emocionada de trabajar en un Concejo mayoritariamente femenino con el liderazgo del Alcalde Boria, pues para ella es una oportunidad para que las mujeres traigan una nueva dinámica al gobierno municipal. “Tener tantas mujeres de carácter juntas va a ser interesante y no dudo que tenga sus momentos difíciles. Luigi sabe cómo trabajar con mujeres. Es un hombre muy respetuoso y estoy segura que nos mantendrá unidas y nos ayudará a controlar emociones. En estas actividades uno tiene que controlar sus emociones y siempre pensar en lo que sea más beneficioso para la ciudad”. La contienda de la campaña y convertirse en modelo de conducta Fue una campaña dura. Hubo personas realmente groseras y hostiles; también hubo momentos muy desgastantes y agotadores. Pero nada pudo desmotivarla. La energía que le mantuvo fue tener consciencia del gran impacto que podía tener en muchas vidas y darse cuen-

hristi Fraga habla muy correcto y fluido el español. Conversar con ella tiene el ritmo y acento de los típicos jóvenes de Doral, que van de un idioma al otro cómodamente. Eso la hace representar con mucha gracia y propiedad a un importante segmento de la población en el nuevo Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad. “Pienso que los votantes vieron en mi alguien que podría trabajar representándolos por mucho tiempo, aprendiendo de los mejores y ayudando a nuestra ciudad a evolucionar para la siguiente generación.” La miembro más joven del Concejo, Fraga es una entusiasta empresaria de 26 años de edad, quien fue electa
ta que, solo por haberse atrevido a ser candidata a un puesto de servicio público, muchos jóvenes de la ciudad la consideraban un modelo de conducta a seguir. “Mi motivación es la comunidad y los ciudadanos que represento. Quiero ser un modelo de conducta para la juventud de la comunidad. Deseo que los niños piensen ‘yo puedo hacerlo porque Christi pudo’. Hay muchos modelos que los jóvenes siguen que no son alcanzables, muchos sueños que no se alcanzan porque no son los correctos. Espero ser modelo para la juventud de Doral y que cualquiera que necesite consejo, apoyo o guía vea en mi alguien a quien acudir.” Palabras convertidas en acciones: su primera propuesta al Concejo Municipal El primer proyecto que Fraga propone como Concejal de Doral es la creación del Comité Juvenil de la ciudad (Youth Advisory Board -YAB). Lo define como “un grupo de jóvenes seleccionados de la comunidad, con edades entre 16 y 20 años, que deseen hacer una diferencia y ayudar al resto de la juventud a incorporarse a la actividad de la ciudad. Una actividad como esa demuestra que tienen responsabilidad y sentido de la importancia del gobierno. Como Concejo tomaremos en cuenta realmente sus recomendaciones.” Para Fraga, YAB permitirá a los jóvenes de Doral comenzar a involucrarse en la administración de la ciudad y comenzar a preparar la nueva generación de líderes que comprendan el gobierno municipal y tengan la responsabilidad social de comprometer su tiempo y esfuerzo para el servicio público. Es exactamente lo que Christi Fraga ha hecho. “Creo firmemente que estoy allanando el camino para los nuevos líderes. Considero que YAB constituirá un gran éxito para la Ciudad.” Sus palabras de aprecio para los líderes anteriores de Doral “Los Concejales anteriores hicieron un trabajo extraordinario para crear nuestra ciudad. Trabajaron en equipo y el Alcalde J.C. Bermúdez hizo un trabajo estupendo. Es un hombre íntegro y solamente he escuchado comentarios excelentes sobre él. No tuve la oportunidad de trabajar juntos, pero le agradezco su dedicación a nuestra ciudad. Igualmente agradezco a todos los Concejales que me precedieron, porque todos tuvieron que hacer sus sacrificios para que la ciudad sea lo que es hoy.” Comprometida con apoyar las actividades de las Escuelas Públicas de Doral Una de las primeras actividades realizadas por Christi Fraga cuando decidió participar en la campaña electoral fue empaparse de las actividades y necesidades de las escuelas de Doral, pues es esa población joven y sus padres a quienes ella quiere representar activamente en el Concejo Municipal. Hoy en día Christi Fraga es muy conocida en RRDSH, donde asiste constantemente a las reuniones del PTSA y apoya con su presencia todas las funciones y eventos. Ella puede hablar con propiedad de lo que ha visto en
la escuela, con el conocimiento de primera mano de la magnitud de cualquier situación y de su impacto en el resto de la comunidad. “Queremos ayudar a que en Doral haya un lugar para todos y el involucramiento de los padres debe ser prioritario. Quiero asegurarme, y ese es uno de mis objetivos, que siempre habrá un ambiente seguro para los jóvenes de Doral. Yo represento solo un voto en el concejo, pero tengo la mejor intención de apoyar a los PTSA en las iniciativas que requieran el apoyo de la Ciudad.” Agradecida y honrada por la oportunidad de servir “Por siempre estaré agradecida y honrada por la confianza que los ciudadanos han puesto en mí. No les defraudaré. En mi tienen no solamente una Concejal sino una amiga, una hermana, una hija para todos en la ciudad. Siempre estaré disponible, porque todo mi trabajo lo hago de corazón y las personas me han dado esta tremenda oportunidad. A quienes no me apoyaron durante la campaña les digo que también soy su Concejal, que les mostraré todo lo que puedo hacer. Somos todos vecinos, mis puertas siempre estarán abiertas para recibirles. Espero que en una futura oportunidad puedan apoyarme”. Christi Fraga tiene el deseo y la inquietud de continuar en el servicio público. “Tal vez en el futuro habrán otras situaciones, otros caminos que desee seguir, no quiero apurar las cosas. Quiero aprender lo que no sé para después compartir mi conocimiento con la próxima generación. Espero poder ser mentor y guía para muchos otros.”

Sin embargo, este 2012 ha sido muy especial para Doral Family Journal, porque pese a varios obstáculos que se presentaron en el camino supimos como sobrepasarlos, y hemos logrado cementar nuestras raíces para seguir creciendo. Durante este año, hemos tratado de seleccionar temas importantes y variados para la sana y objetiva información de todos ustedes y que han sido aceptados con resultados excelentes; Nos llena de satisfacción y nos confirma que, gracias a la confianza de nuestros colaboradores y anunciantes, hemos podido trazar una ruta de crecimiento y desarrollo. El equipo de Doral Family Journal, se siente complacido por un año tan significativo y satisfactorio… Nuestra gratitud y reconocimiento es para todos nuestros lectores por confiar en nosotros. Y sin duda, el año 2013 se vislumbrá como un año de muchos mas retos, no solo para nosotros sino para nuestros nuevos gobernantes quienes tras unos tensos meses de campaña electoral, por fin salieron victoriosos el Alcalde Luigi Boria, y las Concejales Sandra Ruiz, Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera y Cristi Fraga, por las sillas 1,2 y 3 respectivamente. Ellos junto a la Concejal Ana Maria Rodriguez, tendrán en sus manos, la oportunidad de guíar a la Ciudad de Doral por el camino correcto y que hacer que esta, sea y siga siendo una ciudad ejemplar. En esta época acostumbro estar cerca de mi familia, y recordar años pasados con aquellos familiares y amigos que ya no están con nosotros. Es realmente la época mas linda del año, aparte del dia de Accion de Gracias, que es mi fecha de celebracion favorita. Le pido al Señor que me de salud y fortaleza para poder seguir trabajando para nuestra
ciudad, por mi esposo y nuestros hijos, y que me continue iluminando el camino. Seguiré luchando por la Ciudad de Doral por mejores intereses para la ciudad, los cuales incluye mantener los impuestos bajos, y manteniendo una calidad de vida alta. Por eso me eligieron, y siempre cumpliré con mi promesa. Mis expectativas son muy altas para el 2013. Estamos empezando con un Concejo nuevo, nuevas ideas, nuevas perspectivas. The City of Doral designates its new City Manager Merrett R. Stierheim is the name of the person who will be in charge of the city’s administration.
T
he Council meeting on December 4 was vital to among many other things to know who would be part of the new City Council of Doral as well as to designate who would the new Vice Mayor and City Manager of Doral be. After the announced resignation of Yvonne Soler-McKinley, who previously held the position of City Manager, the recently elected Mayor Luigi Boria proposed Stierheim for the position during the Council meeting. After a unanimous vote, the City of Doral Council approved the hiring of new City Manager, Merrett R. Stierheim. Stierheim comes ideal for the position not only because of his rather enviable than admirably resume but also for his enormous experience as a public worker. Throughout his 45- years public service career, Stierheim has demonstrated with facts and not just with words, his willingness to work for the community. Among his many professional accomplishments, Stierheim has been City Manager for the City of Miami, the newly incorporated City of Miami Lakes and for the Miami-Dade County. First served as Manager of Miami-Dade County from 1976 to 1986 and successfully supervised a $5 billion countywide infrastructure expansion including the construction of Miami Metro Zoo, the downtown library and cultural complex, the Government Center, several regional parks, libraries, water, sewer and solid waste facilities, and the county’s mass transit system - Metrorail and Metromover. In 1980, he helped restore law and order after severe civil disturbances and joined community leaders to address the social inequities that sparked the disturbances. Many of those programs are still in place today. Mr. Stierheim also served as interim City Manager of the City of Miami in 1996 where he led a recovery effort, enlisting over forty pro-bono private and public sector executives in thirteen task forces and presented a financial recovery plan to the City. In 1998 he was asked to return to Miami-Dade County to manage a scandal-ridden, demoralized county government with a $4.5 billion budget, 28,000 employees, and 42 departments, including Miami International Airport, the Port of Miami, transportation, water and sewer, health and human services, police and fire. He worked in that capacity until 2001. He has also held several other important public positions such as Superintendent of the Miami-Dade School System, CEO of the professional Women’s Tennis Association, President and CEO of Greater Miami Convention & Bureuau (GMCVB) among some others. Stierheim says to feel welcome by the all the city employees he has known so far. “The mayor has been exceptionally friendly,” said Stierheim. “He personally took me to a tour into the Police Department of Doral and introduced me to all the Departments Directors.” Although some of the City Council members already knew Stierheim from the past, the new City Manager hopes to set up appointments with each and every one of the Councilwoman individually to address what their concerns and priorities as Council members are. “Although I am truly impressed with the facilities and the City Hall, I hope that when the time for me to leave comes, I could say I am leaving the city even better than how I found it,” said Stierheim. Among his goals as City Manager of Doral, Stierheim hopes to achieve stability and good management. If problems arise, Stierheim expectes not only confront but to find tangible solutions to them. “I am here to assist Mayor Boria, who I believe is and will be an excellent Mayor for the City of Doral, as well as the rest of the City Council ,” said Stierheim.

a reunión extraordinaria celebrada el 4 de diciembre de 2012, fue decisiva por entre muchas otras cosas para dar a conocer a quienes conformarían la nueva junta de Concejo, así como para designar quienes ocuparían los cargos de Administrador y Vicealcalde de la ciudad. Y es que trás la anunciada renuncia de Yvonne-Soler McKinley, quién anteriormente ocupaba el cargo de administradora de la ciudad de Doral, el alcalde recién electo Luigi Boria propuso a Merret R. Stierheim ante la Junta de Concejo para ocupar dicho cargo. Después de una votación unánime, el Concejo de la Ciudad de Doral aprobó la contratación de nuevo Administrador de la Ciudad, R. Merrett Stierheim. Stierheim no solo resulta ideal para el cargo por poseer un curriculum vitae que mas que admirable resulta envidiable, sino por su vasta experiencia como servidor público. En sus más de 45 años de carrera, Merrett R. Stierheim ha demostrado con hechos y no solo con palabras, su gran devoción por trabajar en pro de la comunidad. Entre muchos de sus logros profesionales, Stierheim ha sido administrador del Ciudad de Miami, de la recientemente incorporada Ciudad de Miami Lakes y del condado de Miami. Desde 1976 1986, se desempeñó como Gerente de Miami-Dade County y supervisó con éxito una expansión $ 5 mil millones en todo el condado de infraestructura como la construcción de Miami Metro Zoo, la biblioteca del downtown y complejo cultural , el Centro de Gobierno, varios parques regionales, las bibliotecas, el agua, alcantarillado y las instalaciones de residuos sólidos, y el sistema de transporte público del condado - Metrorail y Metromover. En 1980, ayudó a restaurar la ley y el orden después de graves disturbios civiles y se unió a líderes de la comunidad para hacer frente a las desigualdades sociales que provocaron los disturbios. En 1998, el gobierno del condado desmoralizado tras varios escandalos, le pidió que regresara a trabajar para el Condado Miami-Dade; con un presupuesto de $ 4,5 mil millones, 28.000 empleados, y 42 departamentos, incluyendo el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami, el Puerto de Miami, transporte, agua y alcantarillado , salud, la policía y los bomberos. Allí trabajó hasta el 2001. También ha ocupado diferentes cargos públicos como Superintendente del Sistema de Escuelas del Condado de Miami, así como Gerente General de la Asociación de Tennis Femenino; Presidente y Gerente General de Greater Miami Convention & Bureuau (GMCVB) entre algunos otros. Stierheim manifestó sentirse hasta ahora bien recibido tanto en la alcaldía como en la Ciudad. “El alcalde Boria ha sido excepcionalmente amable,” expresó Stierheim. “Me llevo de manera personal a conocer el Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad y me presento a todos directores de los distintos Departamentos de Doral.” agregó. Aunque algunos de los miembros que conforman el Concejo Municipal ya conocían a Stierheim, el nuevo administrador espera poder conversar con todos y cada uno de los miembros del concejo de manera individual para conocer cuales son sus inquietudes y prioridades como concejales. “Aunque estoy verdaderamente impresionado con las instalaciones de la alcaldía, espero que el día que me toque partir pueda decir que dejo la Ciudad de Doral aún mejor de lo que la encontré,” dijo Stierheim. Entre sus metas como administrador de la Ciudad de Doral, Stierheim espera poder lograr una estabilidad y una buena gestión administrativa. De presentarse problemas, Stierheim espera no solo enfrentarlos sino poder proyectar soluciones tangibles. “Estoy aquí para asistir al alcalde Luigi Boria, quién creo que es y será un excelente alcalde para la Ciudad de Doral, y al resto del concejo de la ciudad delDoral,” expresó Stierheim.

Military Affairs Board “Lending a helping hand to our Military families this Holiday Season” By Jose “Pepe” Diaz
he lights are already shinning, the holiday music playing everywhere, the cards, the gifts, the preparations. This is a time when family takes priority, when we yearn for the warmth of a home filled with our loved ones. But for many it is a burdensome time, a sad and lonely time. This is especially true for many of the military families, who have loved ones serving and far away from home. As Chairman of our recently created Military Affairs Board and Military Liaison for Miami-Dade County, I urge to keep these families in your thoughts as we all find ways to help them. As a community, we must help them cope with the pain that comes from being separated from their loved ones and are struggling to adapt while dealing with the difficulties of reintegration. Some are thinking about buying gifts for the holidays and many are having a hard time paying their monthly bills. Others are simply overwhelmed with sadness and despair because their loved will not be home for the holidays and that’s why it’s important we come together as a community to extend a helping hand and embrace the needs of our military and their families in our midst. Let’s consider the thousands of active duty Service men and women, who are lucky enough to travel home for the holidays this year. One of the projects I have strongly supported is the Military Hospitality Lounge at Miami International Airport, located right off Central Terminal E, Level 2. It is operated by the non-profit organization Armed Forces Service Center, Inc. (AFSC). The center provides complimentary refreshments, computer, internet and telephone services and a quiet area to relax for traveling military members and their families with a valid military ID. This past month, we recognized the support of local businesses such as Eulen America, Morris Law Firm, Cawy Bottling Co., FirstBank of Florida, Goldstein Schechter Koch, Compuquick, Wells Fargo Foundation, Regions Bank, Total Bank, Sabadell United Bank and HSBC that have joined in our efforts to maintain this lounge

i ha tenido la oportunidad de salir temprano un sábado o domingo seguramente se habrá topado con un grupo de ciclistas que recorren las calles de Doral. Este deporte se ha tornado muy popular en los últimos tiempos en todo el mundo, y en nuestra ciudad no nos quedamos atrás. En la actualidad Doral cuenta con más de 400 personas que están asumiendo esta modalidad como forma de vida para ejercitarse. Es por esto que la apertura de la tienda de bicicletas y accesorios Florida Pro Cycle en la 10736 NW 58 St. viene de forma muy oportuna. Tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con Luis Chacín, el dueño de este local, quien recientemente ha abierto sus puertas para satisfacer este mercado creciente en nuestra ciudad. The Symbolism Stage in your Child´s Drawing (Part 2) n my column on November 11th, I described the importance of this stage in the drawing of your child for his psychosocial development. Let’s remember the child’s drawings are based on his experiences and what is meaningful to him, as well as on emotional associations. Furthermore, the child develops a specific way to draw certain objects based on the concept he has constructed for each of these (house, person, tree). The child will repeat this way of drawing to assure himself that he has the ability to draw. Another noticeable change is the appearance of the baseline. The child draws the objects on a line or at the bottom of the page. Why does this happen? The child is becoming aware of a certain order of things in his environment. He realizes that things have objective spatial relations to one another. For example, he might think: “I’m on the street, the car is on the street, we are on the street.” The baseline or the edge of the paper is the base, it represents the street, and so he places the objects on it. As you can imagine, this development contributes to the psychosocial development of the child, for he now will not only be concerned with himself but has realized he belongs to a larger whole, an orderly environment with objective relations. This new realization of the place the child occupies in the environment and the relations of things to one another contribute to the development of active cooperation and the ability to work in a group. The introduction of the base line has yet another implication related to reading. The same ability that allows the child to organize the objects in his drawings and paintings, representing the relations to one another through the baseline, is the ability that he uses in reading to relate letters and words. In many cases when we can stimulate the child to express the relations of things in his art, his reading improves. This expression of relations, of course, must be the consequence of the child’s discovery of those relations between objects, and not that of us showing him the relations, for the realization must be significant to the child and not a mere repetition of what the adult says. It is our job as parents and teachers to help the child become more sensitive to the environment, posing questions that will lead to observation and discovery of his surroundings. A more sensitive child will have a better chance of adapting and so will be happier.

La etapa del simbolismo en el arte de tu hijo (Parte 2)
E
n la columna de Noviembre 11, describí la importancia de esta etapa en el dibujo del niño en su desarrollo psicosocial. Recordemos que el niño dibuja de acuerdo a lo que le es significativo y a lo que experimenta, además de aquello que se asocia fuertemente con sus emociones. También es característico que el niño desarrolle una manera especifica de dibujar ciertos objetos importantes basada en los conceptos que ha desarrollado para cada uno de esos objetos (casa, persona, árbol) y que la repita, ya que necesita la seguridad que viene con el saber hacer algo bien. Otra característica de la etapa simbólica es la aparición de la línea base. El niño dibuja los objetos sobre una línea o sobre el borde inferior del papel. Por que ocurre esto? El niño esta tomando conciencia del orden que tienen las cosas en su entorno. Reconoce que esas relaciones espaciales son objetivas. Por ejemplo puede que piense: “Estoy en la calle, el carro esta en la calle, todos estamos en la calle”. La línea o el borde del papel son la base, o sea la calle, y por eso coloca allí todos los objetos. Como se imaginaran, esto tiene gran importancia en el desarrollo psicosocial del niño ya que demuestra que ya no solo se preocupa por si mismo sino que ha descubierto que es parte de un entorno ordenado donde existen relaciones espaciales objetivas. Esta nueva comprensión del lugar que el niño ocupa en el entorno y de las relaciones de los objetos y sujetos entre si, contribuyen al desarrollo de la actividad cooperativa y al trabajo en grupo. Existe otro valor importante en la aparición de la organización del dibujo a través de la línea base que esta relacionado con la lectura. La misma habilidad que le permite al niño organizar los objetos en sus dibujos o pinturas representando sus relaciones en la línea base es la que utiliza en la lectura para relacionar las letras y las palabras. Es así que en muchos casos cuando logramos que el niño exprese las relaciones en sus dibujos o pinturas, mejora su nivel de lectura. Esa expresión, sin embargo, debe ser consecuencia de que el niño haya descubierto las relaciones de los objetos, y no que nosotros se la hayamos indicado, ya que el aprendizaje debe ser significativo para el niño y no una mera repetición de lo que demuestra el adulto. Es nuestra función como padres y maestros ayudar a nuestros hijos a percibir su entorno de manera mas sensible haciendo preguntas que los lleven a reflexionar y descubrir lo que los rodea. Un niño mas sensible será uno con mayor capacidad de adaptación y por lo tanto mas feliz.

a se acercan nuevamente las festividades y junto a ellas las apetitosas tentaciones… digo comidas y recetas familiares que son verdaderamente un placer a nuestro paladar. Y si son tan pero tan ricas, porque rechazar aquellos platos si solo suceden una vez al año, que es cuando tenemos la oportunidad de juntarnos en familia, con nuestros seres queridos que a veces viajan desde otros lugares del mundo tan solo para compartir con nosotros en estas fechas importantes en las cual acostumbramos a cocinar estos manjares. Ya que esta es una situación a la cual NO podemos rechazar, la mejor manera de manejarla será desarrollando un “Plan de Ataque.” Para poder disfruta aquel día sin remordimientos, placer y sobre todo sin preocuparnos de que aquel numero de la balanza suba drásticamente. Para este “Plan de Ataque” necesitaremos PLANIFICAR.
“Menú: Plan de Ataque para las Cenas Navideñas” (Seguir al pie de la letra).. y no te arrepentiras...
• Copos de avena (sin azúcar) en leche de almendra con nueces y pasas. Puedes comprar la avena “Quacker” instantánea, agregarle media taza de agua y media taza de leche de almendra (40 calorías). Meterlo en el microondas por unos minutos, ponerles unas cuantas nueces y una pisca de canela. Lo puedes endulzar con “Stevia.” Acompáñalo con tu cafecito o te de tu gusto. NOTA: Como la avena y las pasas son más altas en carbohidrato que los vegetales, no te sugiero que tomes un vaso de jugo. Snack light: (entre 200 a 300 calorías) (ojo con las porciones) + vaso grande de agua con tu snack • Manzana mediana con palito de queso mozarela light • Yogurt bajo en grasa con un duraznito o kiwi • Manojo de almendras con pasas

Desayuno light: (No más de 300 a 400 calorías) 1 vaso grande agua y un limón exprimido 15 minutos antes de comer. • Omelett de Claras de huevo con vegetales. Puedes elegir los vegetales altos en fibra y antioxidantes, como lo son el brócoli, coliflor, espárragos, hongos, batata, calabaza, tomate, cebolla, zanahoria y pimentones de colores. A esta mezcla le puedes agregar especies en vez de sal, ya que poseen grandes beneficios. Para darle un toque rico le podemos regar pedacitos de queso mozzarella bajo en grasa y una cucharadita de aceite de oliva. Acompáñalo con un vaso pequeño de jugo toronja o pina y tu cafecito.
Tener una plan dietético una semana antes, que no solo nos ayudara a organizarnos en las comidas de nuestro día a día, sino que también nos permitirá volver a acostumbrar nuestro cuerpo a comer de forma saludable y acelerar nuestro metabolismo y como resultado perder peso. Bueno ahora así agarren un papel y lápiz para anotar el siguiente “MENU: PLAN DE ATAQUE de Fiestas Navideñas”. Empezaremos con un menú light para preparar la semana antes de la comidas del 24 y 25 de Diciembre. Así lograremos prevenir la retención de liquidos, bajar unas libritas demás, nutrir nuestro cuerpo, acelerar nuestro metabolismo, todas estas cosas que nos darán el pase para poder romper la dieta y la rutina (tener un “Cheat day”) el día de las Fiestas Navideñas. Claro siempre con moderación y teniendo en cuentan de no abusar de las porciones ya que todo en exceso hace daño y tiene consecuencias.
• Palitos de apio con 2 cucharadas de mantequilla de maní • Palitos de zanahoria con una porción pequeña de hummus Lunch light: (entre 400 a 500 calorías) + 1 vaso grande de agua antes de comer Elije entre Pollo, pescado bajo en grasa, pavo, o cordero (estas proteínas son bajas en grasa y son las más saludables). Acompáñalo con ensalada y vegetales. Te sugiero que los carbohidratos de almidón los guardes para el día de las fiestas. Por ahora aléjate de ellos ;) utiliza vinagre de manzana, especies y aceite de oliva extra virgen para sazonar y darle un rico sabor a tus alimentos. Termina con te verde o de jengibre. Big Orange New Year’s Eve Celebration: Dec 31st at Downtown Miami. On New Year’s Eve, New York City may have the Big Apple dropping but Miami has the Neon Orange rising! A City of Miami tradition, the 35-foot neon Big Orange (one of the official time balls of our nation) will rise 400 feet to the top of its home site, the Hotel InterContinental Miami. For this year, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado renamed the occasion “La Gran Naranja” (Big Orange in Spanish) in honor of Ponce de Leon’s arrival in Florida in 1513 (500 years ago). This year marks the 26th year that Miami’s Neon Orange has been a nationally acclaimed New Year’s celebration. Fireworks and a laser show will follow the ringing of the New Year. Big Orange New Year’s Eve Celebration: 31 de diciembre en Downtown Miami. En la víspera de Año Nuevo, la ciudad de Nueva York podrá tener la gran caída de la Gran Manzana, pero Miami tiene su Naranja de Neón! Esperar el año nuevo es toda una tradición en Miami, con este icono de 35 pies que se eleva 400 metros hasta la cima de su sitio de origen, el Hotel InterContinental Miami. a noche del Viernes 7 de Diciembre, estuvo llena de momentos maravillosos y muy emotivos, cuando en el Paul W. Bell Middle School, brillaron las almas de un excelente grupo de talentosos niños y jóvenes, quienes con sus corazones llenos de alegría y notas musicales, obsequiaron el mejor regalo de Navidad a sus papás y demás invitados, quienes llenaron el auditorio de la escuela para orgullosamente ver a sus pequeños interpretar a los Grandes Maestros de la Música, como Mozart y Haydn, entre otros. Además cantaron hermosos villancicos y melodías navideñas propios de esta temporada. Bajo la magistral dirección y tutela de los maestros Susan Siman y Julian Santacoloma, y con los soportes visionarios e incondicionales de la directora, la Sra. Ingrid Soto y el equipo técnico de Paul W. Bell Middle School, se llevó a cabo este maravilloso concierto-alianza entre la Siman Orchestral Foundation y el Paul W. Bell Middle School. En esta feliz fusión, los talentosos niños y jóvenes
de edades comprendidas entre los 4 a 16 años compartieron atriles, demostrando sus habilidades, interpretación y disciplina a través del arte musical; Cada uno de ellos ejecutando los diferentes instrumentos del espectro orquestal sinfónico y de banda. Cabe destacar que este maravilloso concierto navideño también conto con la participación musical de los padres, quienes de esta forma también se integran de manera positiva a la formación de sus hijos. Las ciudades de Doral y Miami cuentan con estas maravillosas organizaciones de formación cultural, artística e integral para el desarrollo de nuevos talentos y ciudadanos de alto valor para la nación entera. La Siman Orchestral Foundation y el Paul W. Bell Middle School Music Department, son afortunados proyectos dignos del apoyo absoluto por parte de nuestras autoridades y la comunidad en general. Son realmente un invaluable tesoro que nos llena de orgullo como ciudadanos y padres de familia.

“Holiday Lights & Ice”, es sin duda el evento más esperado por todos los residentes de Doral en esta época de Navidad… Una gran cantidad de familias acudieron al JC Bermudez Park el pasado 7 de diciembre, para disfrutar de encantadores diseños iluminados y la iluminación del Arbol de Navidad, dando así inicio a la temporada festiva en la ciudad… La ciudad no escatimó esfuerzos para llamar la atención de grandes y chicos como todos los años y los niños pudieron disfrutar con Santa Claus, y de retratarse con él… Además el evento estuvo cargado de sorpresas, actuaciones artísticas y espectáculos musicales, villancicos navideños, juegos, atracciones mecánicas y un espacio de juegos con mas de 65 toneladas de nieve. Adicionalmente, el alcalde Boria, aprovechó el momento para entregar el reconocimiento a Eduardo Guerrero, estudiante de Doral Academy Elementary School y quién fuera el ganador del concurso del diseño de la tarjeta de Navidad de la Alcaldia.

El PTSA de la escuela secundaria Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High, tuvieron, con su esfuerzo y labor, su Primer Bazar Navideño que se realizó el 8 de diciembre en las instalaciones de la escuela. En el bazar se reunieron varios expositores, los cuales mostraron desde artesanías, creatividad en confecciones y accesorios, productos para la belleza, aromaterapia, y deliciosos postres, bebidas y comidas navide-
ñas. El público y los expositores, disfrutaron de la música navideña gracias a la presentación de la Coral Peregrina “Cantar de Los Cantares”, bajo la batuta de Cristina Belisario, a tal punto que el mismo Alcalde de Doral, Luigi Boria, que se acerco al Bazar, se animó a cantar villancicos junto al coro.

El sábado 1 de diciembre, se realizó el esperado Bazar navideño de Renaissance Elementary & Middle Charter School. La escuela hizo que el espíritu navideño se colará por todos los rincones, y los estudiantes ofrecieron a los padres, varios y excelentes shows, donde grandes y pequeños, cantaron villancicos, bailaron y tocaron instrumentos. Sin contar la asistencia que se acercó al bazar para comprar desde adornos navideños, velas aromáticas, bufandas y un sinnúmero de artículos propios de la Navidad.

Miles de familias aprovecharon este sábado 8 de diciembre para recorrer las instalaciones deportivas de la escuela secundaria Doral Academy Charter y disfrutar del Winter Wonderland Festival. La alegría, el entretenimiento y la diversión se hizo presente en los jóvenes y niños que se montaban en los distintos juegos mecánicos e inflables, dispuestos en el lugar, mientras que los mayores saboreaban alguna comida de las que expendían en el sitio.

Art Shack Attack! enseñando a las familias de Doral como disfrutar del arte juntas El 18 de noviembre se llevo a cabo la tercera edición de Art Shack Attack!, visitando la obra del escultor chileno Ivan Navarro en el FROST ART MUSEUM. Mas de 40 personas asistieron, disfrutaron y aprendieron sobre la obra y participaron en una actividad creativa relacionada con lo que habían experimentado. Las familias tuvieron la oportunidad de compartir varias horas aprendiendo y creando todos juntos.

La pequeña congregación judía del Doral no quiso desaprovechar la oportunidad de celebrar tan importante festividad junto a practicantes y no practicantes de la religión judía. El evento, el cuál tuvo lugar el pasado 12 de Diciembre en las instalaciones externas de la alcaldía fue organizado por el rabino Rabbi Brashevitzky. Tradicionalmente, durante la festividad de Janucá se enciende de manera progresiva un candelabro de nueve brazos al que se conoce como Januquia. El en-

A la conmemoración asistieron personalidades de la ciudad como el alcalde Luigi Boria, quién estuvo a cargo de encender la quinta vela del Januquia a gran escala que fue colocado junto al árbol navideño de la ciudad para este evento. Entre los presentes se encontraban, los miembros del concejo, Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera, Ana Maria Rodríguez, Christi Fraga y Sandra Ruiz quien junto al alcalde dio un breve discurso a todos los asistentes. Entre los invitados se encontraban el ex concejal Pete Cabrera, algunos miembros del cuerpo de la policía del Doral, devotos y residentes. El rabino Brashevitzky espera que éste pueda ser el primero de muchos eventos y celebraciones judías que se lleven a cabo dentro del Doral. Brashevitzky es quien encabeza el movimiento Jabad en la ciudad, el cuál promueve el estudio de Tora y la propagación del judaísmo. Pese a no existir sinagogas dentro de la ciudad, Brashevitzky se a dado a la tarea de crear un sitio de reuniones donde fieles al judaísmo puedan congregarse y profesar sus creencias. “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, was the result of the experience of the Second World War. With the end of that war, and the creation of the United Nations, the international community vowed never again to allow atrocities like those of that conflict happen again. World leaders decided to complement the UN Charter with a road map to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The document they considered, and which would later become the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was taken up at the first session of the General Assembly in 1946”. The Declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, consists of a preamble and 30 articles, setting out a broad range of fundamental human rights and freedoms to which all men and women, everywhere in the world, are entitled, without any distinction.
