ayor Juan Carlos Bermudez along with City of Doral Council and the Department of Public Works held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Thursday, November 1, 2012, at 10:00am, to celebrate the opening of the Doral Public Works facility. The new two-story building is located at 6100 N.W. 99th Avenue, Doral, FL 33178. The 35,000 square foot, $6 million dollar facility includes six bays for fleet maintenance, a 5K square foot warehouse, unleaded gas and diesel storage and dispensing equipment, car wash facility, and hurricane impact windows among other features. The new building is designed to withstand a category five hurricane and is currently on target to receive a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (U.S.G.B.C). The City will also use the facility as its Emergency Operations Center or E.O.C. during any type of emergency.

¿El voto Hispano/Latino abandona al GOP?
El voto en español se esta mudando con rapidez. Si bien en el 2008 McCain logró a nivel nacional que 35% de los Hispanos/Latinos confiaran en los republicanos, en el 2004 el 40% favoreció a George W. Bush. Pero eran otros tiempos. En esta ocasión y según CNN, Obama sedujo al 71% del mismo grupo electoral, mientras su rival apenas alcanzó un alarmante 29%. Una caída libre, sin paracaídas. Estos datos dicen mucho. Los republicanos deberían estar preocupados porque “algo” no les funciona

L
os líderes del Partido Republicano (tambien llamado GOP, por “Grand Old Party” por sus siglas en ingles) deberían reflexionar -no buscar excusas ni profetizar calamidades- sobre las causas que por segunda ocasión consecutiva los llevaron a perder elecciones presidenciales, y otros espacios políticos importantes. Me parece que para ellos no supone ser tiempo para amarguras ni lamentos, sino de descubrir oportunidades para renovar su enfoque sobre algunos temas y el estilo de abordarlos, sin sacrificar sus principios esenciales. Creo que esta, en lo general, es la encrucijada que tienen delante los GOP. Eso o prepararse para otro gobierno Demócrata en el 2016, luego de una mejoría en la economía nacional. ¿Hillary Clinton, tal vez? Eso sería complicado -ni lo dude- para el GOP. Los partidarios del burrito, que de “burro” no tiene nada y además golpea con fuerza, estarían a un paso de haber colocado en la presidencia de Estados Unidos al primer mandatario negro, llevarlo a la re elección y posiblemente incluir en su haber llevar a la Casa Blanca a la primera Comandante en Jefe. El voto popular preliminar de la elección presidencial del martes pasado arroja 50,3% (59,665,415) para el presidente Barack Obama, y 48,1% (57,034,402) para el republicano y ex gobernados de Massachusetts Mitt Romney, que abarcó más territorio nacional, pero en áreas menos pobladas. Así lo han hecho constar 303 votos electorales acreditados a Obama (incluyendo la sorprendente Florida y sus 29 votos) contra 206 de Romney. Bastaban 270 para ganar. En este ajedrez matemático Miami-Dade nuevamente ha sonado la alarma al GOP, concediendo solamente 37,64% de los votos al republicano, y brindando 61,83% a Obama. Este es un indicador superior al del 2008, cuando los electores del condado concedieron 57,81% de confianza a Obama, y 41,7% al entonces candidato el Senador John McCain.

La cuenta total va así: en 2007 (con Bush) 291,060; y con Obama en 2008, 369,221; en 2009, 389,834; en 2010, 392,862, en 2001, 396,906, y en lo que va de 2012 la cifra llega a 366,292 y contando. bien con los votantes en general ni con los Hispanos/ Latinos en especial. O mejor dicho, “algo” les está funcionando de maravilla para alejar masivamente el voto de los que hablan castellano. No es necesario ser gurú, ni brujo, ni santo, ni santero. ¡Basta ver los números! Me parece que los Tea Party tuvieron su oportunidad, pero ahora es tiempo para mentes y gentes moderadas. Yo no descartaría –usted crea lo que quiera- el regreso del ex gobernador de la Florida Jeb Bush, un progresista muy popular en algunos sectores GOP, que reconoce el valor de las minorías y especialmente de los Hispanos/Latinos en todo el país, impulsor de la educación, hombre de alianzas y acuerdos, ni ingenuo ni belicista, y que ve a Latinoamérica como socio potencial. A inicios de 2011 advirtió la situación que ahora enfrenta el GOP, y al entrevistarlo durante una conferencia republicana me dijo que “en los próximos veinte años la comunidad Hispana (Latina) va a ser la comunidad que decide elecciones en estados como Florida, Texas, California, Nevada…,” y tras una breve pausa agregó que “ante esta realidad no podemos quedarnos atrás porque no hicimos el esfuerzo, o les faltamos al respeto.” Bush habla español y su esposa es mexicana. Me da la impresión que no se parece a su hermano George ni en lo físico.

Por supuesto, es reprochable que Obama no haya cumplido a los Hispanos/Latinos su promesa de una reforma migratoria integral y compasiva, que proteja las fronteras y ordene la inmigración legal, detenga las separaciones de tantas familias con años de residir en Estados Unidos y les abra
Un país dividido
Las campañas desarrolladas por ambos partidos de las que se han reportado el escandaloso gasto cercano a los $3 mil millones; las ácidas contiendas de ambos bandos en las redes sociales, caracterizadas por una galopante desinformación, burlas y hasta anuncios ofensivos…, sin duda han dejado un país dividido mas allá del voto. Hay heridas que deben ser sanadas, porque esta ha sido una contienda sucia. Muy sucia. Si bien un liderazgo responsable afronta los retos con mente clara, y hace los ajustes debidos, también los electores debemos demandar de ambas fuerzas políticas un actuar coherente para el beneficio de la nación. En su comparecencia pública para aceptar su derrota, en un breve discurso un Romney amable y conciliador dijo “estos son tiempos de retos para América, y rezo para que Obama guie con éxito nuestra nación”, urgiendo a demócratas y republicanos “de todos los niveles, a poner la política a un lado”. Minutos después Obama aseguró a la nación querer reunirse con Romney para conversar sobre maneras de unir esfuerzos, pues “hemos batallado ferozmente, pero ha sido porque amamos profundamente este país.” Ojalá, por el bien de todos y todas, que lo logren. Que no sea este un gobierno que pretenda imponer su agenda sin crear consensos, ni que haya una oposición que se olvide del bien común y se dedique a buscar el fracaso de la Casa Blanca. Los votantes deben exigirlo. Y los medios de comunicación debemos hacer nuestra parte, sin tomar partido, sin justificar a unos inmerecidamente, ni criticar a otros injustamente. No suponemos ser activistas ni voceros de campañas políticas.

The Republican Crossroads

Just look at the numbers! I think the Tea Party had their chance, but now it’s time for moderate minds. I would not discard -whatever you may think- the return of Jeb Bush, former Gov. of Florida and a popular progressive GOP for some sectors, which recognizes the value of minorities, advocate for education, man of alliances and agreements, nor naive nor aggressive, who sees Latin America as a potential partner. In early 2011 Bush seemed to notice the situation the GOP is now facing. When I interview him for “Diario Las Americas” during a Republican Conference he told me that “In the next twenty years the Hispanics (Latinos) are going to be the community that decides elections in states like Florida, Texas, California, Nevada ...,” and after a pause added “This reality can not be left behind because we did not make an effort, or fail to respect them.” Bush speaks Spanish and his wife is Mexican.
Hispanics / Latinos expect answers from both parties
Of course it is reprehensible that Obama has not fulfilled the Hispanic / Latino promise of comprehensive immigration reform, protecting borders and legal immigration, stopping separations of families with years of living in the United States, and open a path to legalization for them. This –for real- is a bipartisan task ahead. Romney, by the hand of Paul Ryan and the Tea Party, could not avoid being placed next to the most radical in sensitive issues, nor other voices indicated otherwise. Hispanics / Latinos that went to the polls Tuesday represented 10% of the total votes, and made their point clear.
Minutes after Obama claimed he will meet Romney to discuss ways to join forces, because “we have fought fiercely, but it was because we love this country deeply.” Hopefully they succeed, for the sake of everyone. We hope the government will not seek to impose its agenda but creating consensus or the opposition will forget the common good in order to engage in early battles for the White House. Voters should demand mature acting from both parties to work for the country reaching agreements. The media and journalists are not neither activists nor their spokesmen. We do our work, making sure they do theirs.

As a matter of fact they are moving quickly. While McCain in 2008 nationally got 35% of Hispanics / Latinos to trust the Republicans, in 2004 the 40% favored George W. Bush. But those were different times. This time, according to CNN, Obama won over the 71% of the same electoral group, while his rival just reached an alarming 29%. Jumping without a parachute? These data speak by themselves. Republicans should be concerned that “something” did not work well with voters in general or with Hispanics / Latinos in particular. Or rather “something” is going really well rejecting those who also speak Spanish. For this you need not be a guru, or witch, or saint.
A country divided
The campaigns conducted by both parties which have reported the scandalous spending close to $ 3 billion, the acidic contests in social networks, characterized by disinformation, ridicule and even offensive ads ... undoubtedly have left a divided country. There are wounds to be healed, because this has been a dirty campaign. While responsible leadership faces challenges with a clear mind, and makes the adjustments due, also voters must demand from both political groups to act consistent for the benefit of the nation. In his public appearance to accept defeat, in brief speech a friendly and conciliatory Romney said, “These are challenging times for America, and I pray that Obama successfully guide our nation”, urging Democrats and Republicans “of all levels to put politics aside. “

Does Hispanic/Latino voters abandons the GOP?
Obama has to answer. So far his administration has deported more than 2.2 million illegal immigrants. About half had a criminal record. The pace of deportations has been over President George W. Bush (2000-2008). The total count goes like this: in 2007 (with Bush) 291.060, and with Obama in 2008, 369.221, in 2009, 389.834, in 2010, 392.862 in 2001, 396.906, and so far 2012 the figure reaches 366.292 and counting.

he leaders of the Republican Party (also called the GOP, for “Grand Old Party”) should reflect -not looking for excuses or continue “prophesying” calamities -on causes that led them to the second consecutive losing presidential elections and other political spaces. I think that for them this is not supposed to be a time for bitterness or regrets, but to discover opportunities to renew their focus on certain themes and ways of addressing them, without sacrificing its essential principles. I think this is, in general, the crossroads the GOP are facing now. That or be prepared for another Democratic administration in 2016, after an improvement in the national economy. Hillary Clinton comes to my mind? One complicated possibility for Republicans, no doubt. Supporters of the “burrito”, that of “donkey” has nothing and hits very hard, not only would claim to had place the first black president in the White House, but to reelect him, and probably bring also the first woman as Commander in Chief. The preview of the popular vote last Tuesday’s presidential election threw 50.3% (59, 665.415) for President Barack Obama. The Republican, former Massachusetts Gov. Future of Doral to be decided through deliberate voting The ordeal of the campaign for City Council continues By: Grecia Romero y María Alejandra Pulgar
N
ovember 6th was supposed to be the last day of a strong, intense and controversial political campaign for the City of Doral Council; it was not. However, results demonstrated the profound interest of Doral citizens to express their opinion and decide who will lead the future of this city in the next four years: a share of 62% of the electoral college casted votes, very significant considering that historically for municipal elections only around 20% of voters show up in the polls. Even assuming that this large participation is the result of the joined vote for federal elections, it still shows that when citizens participate and cast educated votes they can make an impact in their communities. With a percentage difference of 10.77% between Luigi Boria and Frank Bolaños, the chair of the mayor of Doral remains in play, as do two of the three City Council seats: Elena Ortega-Tauler against Sandra Ruiz for the Chair #1 and Christi Fraga against Robert Van Name for chair #3, seeing as none of them achieved the 50% +1 required to be declared winner. These candidates must now capitalize on the basis of voters who supported those candidates who were left out so as to set the course and fate of the city leadership. In a head to head contest, Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera achieved a 50.56% majority and won Chair #2 in the first round against Clemente Vera.
At this point in the electoral game, the interest to participate in the final election round and attend the polls will be determined by how well the candidate understands the needs of Doral’s voters. The time for making promises, creating expectations and developing plans is long gone; now is the moment for the candidates left in the game to actively approach the citizens, identify their needs and demonstrate that they are true examples of civilized politicians, educated citizens and team players, prepared to deliver quality work and commitment to public service. Candidates need to provide the voters with details and concrete actions from their plans for office, avoiding at all cost the temptation of denigrating about their contenders instead of highlighting their own strengths and virtues. Victory will come to those candidates that demonstrate ethics with their words and actions as well as a

A campaign that matches citizens’ expectations
organization and institutions, prosperity, harmony, and a good future for their children. Seeing that candidates for office fail to demonstrate civility in their public interactions, would make residents end up believing that involvement in public service is detrimental to a person’s reputation and their interest in civic activism would diminish. With the lack of interest from the population, public leadership positions might end up in the wrong hands. That is a situation to be avoided at all cost.
Did alliances and endorsements influence the results?
Frank Bolaños and Luigi Boria capability for team work and conciliation. Those will be the candidates that will win the respect of the voters and achieve the coveted positions. The participation of youth in the city was tangible during election season, not only as volunteers supporting candidates, but also interested in understanding the vision and objectives that motivated candidates to run for office. However, the campaign turned increasingly bitter and opponents often attacked each other personally rather than debating their platform or political views. It was very sad to see educated adults using demeaning and destructive expressions against each other, contradicting the idea of being good examples of civility for youth and children of Doral. According to a comment by civic activist Mike Rodriguez, a hopeful and positive campaign will be the kind of contend that will favor a growing city, because it establishes the model of respect for the institutions and encourages participation. The campaign for the second round will have focus on what needs to be done and not on personal confrontations. Mr. Rodriguez defined it clearly: “Candidates have to remember that we are all neighbors.” It happens to be that Doral is a community of only over 40,000 residents, where people live, work and play within the same contexts; personally attacking others contributes only to deteriorate the ambiance in the city and adds nothing to the coexistence of the citizens. Most of those who live here, especially those who arrived within the last 10 years, just when the city was incorporated as an independent municipality, came looking for
At the time of closing this edition it is not certain if Pete Cabrera, Bibiana Salmon and Carlos Ruiz are going to endorse one of their former contenders for the runoff or will just decide to step aside and look the results from the trenches. In any case, it is not their endorsement what will decide the final results, but the level of empathy the remaining candidates may generate on the voters that supported the candidates left behind. It was evident on the first run that Doral voters made their educated decisions based on their values and the information provided by the candidates, not influenced by endorsements or ballots. If that would have been the case elections would have concluded already. Even though the majority of Doral residents does not spare praises for the administration of Mayor Bermudez, when the time to choose came, the ideas that permeated to voters were Ruiz’s experience as a councilwoman and the message of Boria stating that the Mayoral seat “is not a monarchy that you inherit”, rather than the open endorsement of Bermudez for Bolaños and Ortega-Tauler, or his direct warning stating that, even outside City Hall, the First Mayor would always be watching over the decisions on the city. In any case, the contest for Doral Council goes on, and the ordeal continues for the citizens to deal with the level of civility candidates decide to put on their campaigns. That will determine the interest of the citizens to continue voicing their opinion in the polls on November 27.
To the future Council Members: there is no time to waste
Although the contest for Mayor took up most of the attention from the electorate, with 10,495 voters casting their selection in the polls, it is no less important the adequate selection of the right
people as Councilmembers. The Charter of the City of Doral defines its Council as a “High Performing Government” institution, where the coordination between the mayor and the council has the same level of importance and weight in decision-making. One of the Council chairs left to be defined is Chair #3, currently occupied by Luigi Boria. This post still has two more years of service, therefore whoever is elected will have to get to work quickly, to make an efficient and effective contribution in the decisions of the Council. On the race for that post voters will have to compare the fresh approach and academic credentials of Christi Fraga, against the experience and achievements of Robert Van Name. Although Christi was able to obtain 45% of the voter’s interest with her methodical and organized campaign and her personal approach, very appealing to younger voters, Mr. Van Name meanwhile is endorsed by his leadership during the incorporation process, his previous Vice-Mayor experience and countless concrete results. The interest and involvement of new voters to analyze in depth the advantages of each candidate will have the final word on this decision. The other case of interest for voters is whether to favor the previous experience in the council of Sandra Ruiz or giving a chance to the professional experience and community service commitment of Dr. Elena Ortega-Tauler. Council Chair #1 is a post of 4 years, so any decision the electorate make will have to be very well thought out, given the longer-term influence of the person that will perform that role in the community. It is an opportunity to capitalize on the combined capabilities of all the new faces who will occupy the Government Center starting next month. This second part of the campaign is not the time to incubate rivalries or personal grudges among potential future members of the council. People who have decided to volunteer for public service have to be well aware that their integrity and accountability will be permanently in the sight of the community, therefore they should focus their campaigns for the seat on the Council on showing their own abilities and strengths that can contribute to an effective local government instead of wasting time exposing the weaknesses of their competitors. Once council members are defined on November 27, the elected officials will have the responsibility of working together, without rivalry, capitalizing on previous experiences in order to bring the city to the vision outlined in the Master Plan.

Protecting the City with votes
It is the hope for the City of Doral that voters continue to behave responsibly as before, making informed decisions based on facts and truthful information; and the message to the remaining candidates for the runoff is to treat citizens with respect, showing concrete achievements and detailed plans to support election promises. Candidates must always remember that it is not enough to be well prepared, look good and be nice, but at the end it will be their attitude what will win the vote and encourage voters to participate. Much is at stake in this election. The City of Doral is still establishing itself as an independent municipality. There is still lack of roads and schools infrastructure due to new homes being built. The potential for street flooding remains and it is important to take measures to solve it soon. The population is growing, and it is necessary to strengthen security mechanisms and provide the police with the resources to effectively protect the community. At the same time, the vision of Doral as a financial and commercial hub for the County makes it essential that the authorities truly represent the characteristics of the city and maintain good relationships with surrounding municipalities and state authorities. It is in these fundamental issues where the campaign should be based the next few weeks, allowing voters to have a clear vision of which candidate has the necessary strengths to meet the challenges of the next four years in the City of Doral. It is now more crucial than ever that responsible citizens exercise their right to vote. At this point, what is at stake is the future of the city and it is only by voting that institutions built with such dedication and effort by the previous Council will be preserved.

El Voto consciente definirá el futuro de Doral La Contienda Continúa

l martes 6 de Noviembre se pensaba que finalizaría una campaña electoral fuerte, polémica e intensa en la Ciudad de Doral. No fue así. Los resultados demostraron el importante interés de los ciudadanos por decidir quienes liderarán el futuro de esta municipalidad en los próximos 4 años con una participación del universo electoral de un 62%, una cantidad muy significativa, considerando que en general, para elecciones municipales, la participación ciudadana históricamente ha sido alrededor de un 20%. Aun cuando se asume que esta gran participación haya sido consecuencia de la votación conjunta con las elecciones federales, demuestra que cuando el ciudadano participa con interés y vota a consciencia puede lograr un impacto en su comunidad. Con una diferencia porcentual de 10.77% entre Luigi Boria y Frank Bolaños, la silla de la alcaldía de Doral continúa en juego, al igual que dos de las tres sillas del Concejo Municipal: Elena Ortega-Tauler contra Sandra Ruiz en la silla 1 y Christi Fraga contra Robert Van Name en la Silla 3, pues ninguno de ellos logró el 50% +1 requerido para declararle ganador. Corresponde ahora a estos candidatos capitalizar de la base de votantes que apoyaron a los que quedaron fuera, para definir el curso y suerte del liderazgo de la ciudad. En una contienda cabeza a cabeza Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera logró con un 50.56 % asegurarse la silla 2 en primera vuelta contra Clemente Vera. En este punto del juego electoral, el nivel de identificación del candidato con los votantes será decisivo para mantener el interés de la participación en las elecciones definitivas. El tiempo del énfasis en hacer promesas, crear expectativas y diseñar planes ha pasado. El momento ahora y el llamado a los candidatos que han quedado para la segunda vuelta, es a acercarse a los ciudadanos de Doral y demostrar que son ejemplo de civismo, de compañerismo, de compromiso y de calidad de trabajo, explicando con detalles y planteamientos concretos sus planes al llegar a la alcaldía y sin caer en la tentación de denigrar de los defectos del otro para realzar las virtudes propias. El que haga la campaña con el mayor nivel de ética y demuestre con palabras y obras que es capaz de trabajar en equipo y conciliadoramente;

Una campaña a la altura de los ciudadanos
el que se gane el respeto de los ciudadanos y motive a la comunidad a la participación, ese será el candidato que se lleve la posición deseada. La participación de la juventud de la ciudad fue palpable en este periodo electoral, no solo como voluntarios apoyando a los candidatos que les simpatizaban sino también interesándose por entender la visión y objetivos que motivaron a cada candidato a lanzarse a un puesto en el Concejo. Sin embargo, el tono de la campaña
La mayoría de los que aquí residen, sobre todo los que llegaron en los últimos 10 años, justo cuando la ciudad se fundaba como municipalidad independiente, vinieron buscando organización e instituciones, prosperidad, armonía, y un buen futuro para sus hijos. Ver que los candidatos a liderar los destinos de la ciudad se comporten de manera poco armoniosa y cívica lo único que va a lograr es que el interés por el involucramiento y participación ciudadana desaparezca y terminen alcanzando las posiciones de poder aquellos cuyas motivaciones no reflejen el verdadero sentir de la comunidad sino intereses particulares o, peor aun, externos a la ciudad.
La influencia de alianzas y respaldos en los resultados
se fue tornando amargo y en muchos casos llegó al ataque personal entre los contrincantes. Fue muy lamentable ver a adultos educados utilizando expresiones denigrantes y destructivas que mucho distaron de representar un buen ejemplo de competencia cívica para jóvenes y niños de la ciudad. De acuerdo al comentario del activista Mike Rodríguez, una campaña esperanzadora y positiva es la que favorece a una ciudad en crecimiento, porque establece el modelo de respeto por las instituciones y motiva a la participación. La campaña de la segunda vuelta deberá enfocarse en lo que falta por hacer y no en áridos enfrentamientos personales. El Sr. Rodríguez lo define claramente: “Los candidatos tienen que recordar que todos somos vecinos”. Y es que Doral es una comunidad de apenas 40.000 habitantes, donde se convive y comparte en los mismos contextos y el agredirse personalmente solamente contribuye a enrarecer el ambiente en la ciudad y no aporta nada al proceso.
Al cierre de esta edición se desconoce con certeza a quienes apoyarán Pete Cabrera, Bibiana Salmon y Carlos Ruiz en la segunda vuelta o si sencillamente decidirán mantenerse al margen de la contienda. En cualquier caso, su respaldo no será el que defina los resultados, sino la empatía que los candidatos que continúan generen en los seguidores de quienes perdieron. En la primera vuelta fue evidente que el votante de Doral eligió basado en sus propias convicciones e impresiones y no empujado por respaldos o por candidatos agrupados. Si ese hubiera sido el caso tanto la alcaldía como las sillas 1 y 3 ya estarían decididas. Aun cuando la mayoría de la población de Doral no escatima elogios para la gestión del Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez, calaron mas en los votantes, a la hora de elegir, la experiencia previa como concejal de la Sra. Ruiz y el mensaje del Sr. Boria diciendo que la alcaldía “no es una monarquía que se hereda”, antes que el apoyo de Bermúdez a Bolaños y Ortega-Tauler o la directa advertencia de que aún fuera de la alcaldía, el Primer Alcalde estaría siempre observando la gestión de los demás. En cualquier caso la contienda sigue y el tono que tenga la campaña que se avecina será el que determine el interés e involucramiento de los ciudadanos en el proceso de votación del 27 de noviembre. El escenario ideal seria que las ideas y apoyo de todos, ganadores y perdedores, se unifiquen en un plan de trabajo concreto para el progreso

Proteger la ciudad con el voto
Una de las sillas que está en definición es la silla 3, actualmente ocupada por Luigi Boria. A este cargo le quedan 2 años mas de servicio, con lo cual quien sea elegido tendrá que poner manos a la obra rápidamente para que su aporte sea eficiente y efectivo en las decisiones de la ciudad. En esta silla compiten la frescura, preparación académica e ímpetu de Christi Fraga contra la experiencia y logros concretos de Robert Van Name. Christi en la primera vuelta conquistó al 45% de los votantes con su metódica y organizada campaña de presencia personal y acercamiento sobre todo a los más jóvenes. Van Name por su parte tiene el aval de haber sido líder y padre fundador de la ciudad. Es la esperanza para la ciudad que el electorado de Doral continúe comportándose de manera inteligente como hasta ahora y el mensaje a los candidatos que quedan es que traten a los ciudadanos con respeto, mostrando con hechos concretos sus logros y respaldando con planes detallados sus promesas electorales. Los candidatos deben recordar siempre que no basta estar bien preparado, lucir bien o ser simpático, sino que su actitud al final es la que gana los votos y motiva al elector a participar. Es mucho lo que hay en juego en estas elecciones. La Ciudad de Doral aun esta consolidándose como municipalidad independiente. Falta infraestructura de calles y escuelas debido a las nuevas viviendas que se están construyendo. El potencial de inundaciones en las calles se mantiene y es importante resolverlo pronto. La población esta creciendo y eso hace necesario fortalecer los mecanismos de seguridad y dotar a la policía con
los recursos para proteger eficazmente a la comunidad. A la vez, la proyección de Doral como centro financiero y comercial para el condado hace imprescindible que sus autoridades sean representativas de las características de la ciudad y tengan buenas relaciones con las municipalidades circundantes y con las autoridades estatales. Es en estos puntos básicos donde debe basarse la campaña de estas próximas semanas, para que los electores de Doral tengan claro cual de los candidatos tiene las fortalezas necesarias para afrontar los retos de los próximos 4 años en la ciudad. Es ahora más crucial que nunca el protagonismo ciudadano con la participación activa al ejercer su derecho al voto. A estas alturas lo que esta en juego es el futuro de la ciudad y es el voto el que protegerá las instituciones que con tanta dedicación y esfuerzo se han construido y que deben continuar en las manos mas idóneas.

A pesar de que el puesto de Alcalde ocupó la mayor atención del electorado con una participación de 10,495 votos, no se debe dejar de lado la importancia del cuerpo de concejales, pues su rol es protagónico para la ciudad. El chárter de Doral define el Concejo como una institución de “High Performing Government”, donde el trabajo coordinado entre el alcalde y los concejales tiene el mismo nivel de importancia y peso en la toma de decisiones.

A los futuros concejales: no hay tiempo que perder
decisión final en esta silla. El otro caso de interés para los electores es la decisión entre la experiencia previa en el concejo de Sandra Ruiz y la experiencia profesional y de servicio comunitario de la Dra. Elena Ortega-Tauler. La silla 1 es un cargo de 4 años por lo que cualquiera que sea la decisión que tome el electorado tendrá que ser muy bien pensada, dada la influencia a mayor plazo de quien ocupe ese rol. Es la oportunidad de hacer un inventario de las capacidades que se conjugan en todas las nuevas caras que ocuparán el ‘Government Center’ de Doral a partir del próximo mes. No es momento de incubar rivalidades o de sembrar resentimientos personales entre los potenciales futuros miembros del concejo. Las personas que han decidido ofrecerse para el servicio público saben bien que su integridad y transparencia estará permanentemente en la mirilla de la comunidad, por lo tanto deberán enfocar la campaña por la silla en el concejo en sus propias habilidades y fortalezas que puedan aportar y no en las debilidades de quienes les adversan. Una vez que los miembros del Concejo se definan el próximo 27 de noviembre, los elegidos tendrán la responsabilidad de trabajar unidos, sin rivalidades, capitalizando de las experiencias anteriores y capacitando al que lo necesite para llevar a la ciudad hacia la visión definida en el Plan Maestro.

U
na gran expectativa rodeó la preparación del Cabildo Abierto con el Superintendente de Escuelas de Miami-Dade que tuvo lugar en el auditorio de la Escuela Secundaria Ronald W. Reagan/Doral el pasado 1 de Noviembre. Administradores, padres, maestros, voluntarios y organizaciones cívicas trabajaron arduamente para invitar a la comunidad a participar en esta reunión, donde seria explicada personalmente por el Sr. Alberto Carvalho a la comunidad del Distrito Educativo 5, la propuesta “Emisión de Bonos para las Escuelas del Siglo 21”, sometida a referéndum en el estado de Florida junto con otras varias legislaciones en las elecciones del 6 de Noviembre. Finalmente, la presentación fue realizada por la Asistente del Superintendente, Sra. Iraida Méndez-Cartaya, en representación del Sr. Carvalho. La propuesta resultó aprobada en el referéndum, por lo tanto es fundamental que todos aquellos que no asistieron al Cabildo Abierto conozcan y comprendan a que se refiere la propuesta, pues sus efectos tienen un impacto fiscal directo en todos los dueños de inmuebles en el Condado Miami-Dade, incluyendo por supuesto a los residentes de Doral. Por diversos medios de comunicación se informó a la comunidad de la realización de esta reunión, con tiempo suficiente para que se prepararan a asistir. El evento estuvo patrocinado por el PTA de Miami-Dade County (MDCC-PTA), la Doral Community Coalition y el Doral Rotary Club. Este Cabildo Abierto resultó ser una oportunidad única para que los residentes de Doral aprendieran sobre el funcionamiento de las escuelas públicas de Miami-Dade y la administración de sus fondos, al igual que pudieran conocer en persona a los oficiales de la Junta Escolar, el MDCC-PTA, autoridades del Distrito Escolar #5, oficiales de los PTA locales y los directores de todas las escuelas públicas de Doral: Ms. Hines de JIS, Ms. Caceres de DMS, Ms. Vangates de DRE, Ms. Barreira de EBT y el anfitrión Dr. Bentolilla de RRDSH, al igual que los administradores de Stirrup Elementary, Ruben Dario Middle y otras escuelas del Distrito 5 y áreas vecinas. Desafortunadamente la presencia de miembros de la comunidad de Doral no fue tan masiva como se esperaba, a pesar que una reunión extensamente anunciada, abierta a la comunidad y con acceso a todos estos oficiales y administradores es una ocasión no muy frecuente y el impacto del tema a discutir es extensivo a todos los propietarios de inmuebles en Doral. Es lamentable la baja asistencia, puesto que a la larga el desinterés y la desinformación por parte de una comunidad terminan yendo en detrimento de su calidad de vida. Antes de la presentación de la Sra. Mendez Cartaya, habló al público el Sr. Joseph Gebara, Vice-Presidente del MDCC-PTA, para explicar en detalle las enmiendas estatales 3 y 8 que también fueron sometidas a aprobación en Nov. 6 y que tenían el potencial de afectar directamente los fondos para la educación pública en el estado. Afortunadamente ambas enmiendas fueron denegadas por
Iraida Méndez-Cartaya los electores, garantizando así que al menos esos fondos que estaban en peligro se mantengan inalterables, para beneficio de la educación en Florida. De acuerdo a la explicación presentada por la Sra. Mendez Cartaya, el referéndum 222 aprobó la generación de $1.2 billones en Bonos de Obligación General, cuya venta permitirá financiar los gastos relacionados con: reparación de edificaciones educativas, actualización tecnológica, construcción de infraestructura de remplazo, ampliación de la capacidad educativa y mejoras a la seguridad escolar. El impacto para los contribuyentes de la aprobación de esta medida está proyectado que sea $5 anual por cada $100,000 de valor fiscal de la vivienda. Esto significa por ejemplo que para un ciudadano de Doral cuya residencia este avaluada para efectos de impuestos en $300,000, tendrá que pagar anualmente $15 por concepto de los Bonos para Educación. El beneficio a largo plazo de esta iniciativa se estima que generará 9,200 empleos en los primeros 3 años y más de 18,000 empleos permanentes a posteriori. Para supervisar la administración del dinero proveniente de los Bonos, la Junta Escolar constituirá un comité voluntario de 23 miembros, compuesto por representantes de la comunidad, los PTA, cámaras de comercio, etc, que además incluirá un Auditor en Jefe y un Inspector General. La responsabilidad del comité será velar por la administración adecuada y eficaz de los fondos, además de ser responsable de monitorear las decisiones de desembolsos y la ejecución a tiempo de los proyectos.
para enfrentar los retos educativos actuales. Las escuelas de Doral son relativamente nuevas, comparadas con el resto del condado, siendo John I. Smith K-8 Center, construida en 1995 la escuela con mayor tiempo en operación. Esta comunidad es afortunada de tener escuelas con infraestructura de primera línea, bien mantenidas y equipadas con la mas moderna tecnología educativa, que a lo largo del tiempo han sido mantenidas y bien preservadas por la dedicación y esmero de sus administradores y el apoyo y patrocinio de la comunidad a través de las alianzas estratégicas Dade Partners y la activa participación de los padres en los PTA. Aun así, las escuelas públicas de Doral también recibirán la justa parte de los fondos que les corresponda por parte de la Junta Escolar a consecuencia de la emisión de los Bonos. Hay acciones de mantenimiento y renovación pendientes para las escuelas de Doral, como son: reparaciones de infraestructura y equipamiento, inclusión y actualización de la tecnología en las aulas y la tan esperada remoción de las aulas portátiles (los ‘portables’). Los planes de renovación para cada una de las escuelas de Doral puede verse en el sitio Web de ‘Bonds for Schools’ en http://bondsforschools.dadeschools. net/Files/Doral.pdf También, la deseada y necesaria construcción de facilidades educativas adicionales en Doral, principalmente la segunda Escuela Publica Secundaria, se encuentra incluida en el Plan de proyectos de Capacidad Educativa Adicional, cuyos fondos provendrán de los Bonos en los próximos años. Esto lo comentó la sra. Mendez-Cartaya como respuesta a una pregunta realizada en la reunión por la Sra. Lyda Zataraín, madre de estudiantes de la zona, quien comentó sobre la potencial magnitud del aporte de los residentes de Doral como consecuencia

J. Bentolilla fraestructura del condado aun no ha sido desarrollado. Ahora que la emisión de los bonos ha sido aprobada, la Junta Escolar tendrá que anunciar las prioridades, fechas y tiempo de ejecución. Será la responsabilidad de la comunidad estar atentos para asistir a las reuniones futuras que tengan lugar, que les permitirán estar informados sobre los progresos de los proyectos y vigilantes sobre las mejoras de las escuelas de Miam-Dade y en particular de Doral. ¡Lo importante son los niños! Discusión y soluciones La oportunidad del Cabildo Abierto fue aprovechada por varios maestros de otras escuelas del distrito para manifestar su desacuerdo con la distribución de los fondos provenientes de los bonos y la necesidad de que la Junta Escolar de Miami-Dade solicite al estado lo necesario para mejorar los salarios, entre otras varias necesidades de los maestros. La Sra. Mendez-Cartaya explicó que
los fondos provenientes de los bonos estarán destinados a infraestructura, no a los costos operativos del presupuesto de la Junta Escolar, porque las necesidades capitales (infraestructura) no reciben fondos de la legislatura y, cuando la infraestructura de una escuela se deteriora por falta de mantenimiento, los padres comienzan a buscar alternativas adicionales para sus hijos, como escuelas chárter o escuelas privadas y terminan siendo esas instituciones las que se reciben los fondos del estado en lugar de las escuelas publicas. Por lo tanto, la acción responsable y proactiva de la Junta Escolar para financiar esas necesidades capitales de las escuelas fue la creación del proyecto de emisión de los Bonos En el calor de esa discusión, la intervención del Sr. Jesse Jones, respetable miembro de la Doral Community Coalition y activista por muchos años para la construcción de las escuelas de Doral, entre ellas Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, fue determinante para retomar el rumbo de la reunión. Su declaración “Lo importante son los niños, ellos son la razón de ser para nuestra presencia aquí”, recibió una salva de aplausos, pues al final el mayor interés de todos los presentes en la reunión se enfocó en comprender y apoyar las medidas a tomar para la preservación de la calidad de las escuelas públicas del distrito y en particular de Doral El 6 de Noviembre un entusiasta Alberto Carvalho celebró la aprobación de la emisión de los bonos y comunicó a la prensa: “Hemos prometido que todos los planteles serán reparados y actualizados tecnológicamente. Ese sueño empieza hoy, con la aprobación de 222”. Queda de parte de la Junta Escolar cumplir con esa promesa y con la confianza depositada por casi el 69% de los electores

perior del Doral Academy tendrán ahora en el campo de negocios, gracias al programa de pasantías que se ofrecerá en las empresas del Doral y la misma entidad de gobierno de la Ciudad. El alcalde Bermúdez, por su parte, tuvo la oportunidad de enfatizar en los estudiantes la importancia de la iniciativa empresarial y su futuro en una economía globalizada y competitiva. Ha sido uno de sus objetivos como alcalde el trabajar junto a los directores de

l pasado 29 de octubre, el Especialista en Relaciones Publicas Sr. José Soto y el Representante Sr. Jeremy L. García, miembros de la Junta Asesora Juvenil de la Compañía de Seguros State Farm, hicieron entrega de un reconocimiento monetario de $25,000 a Doral Academy Charter Preparatory School en apoyo a su programa de Educación Financiera. Este premio es una concesión muy importante que State Farm otorga a excelentes programas que “promueven el aprendizaje experimental y contribuyen con la práctica en situaciones reales, donde los estudiantes pueden aprender y aplicar la resolución de problemas en sus comunidades con un impacto en su rendimiento y responsabilidad cívica”. El alcalde de Doral Sr. Juan Carlos Bermúdez junto al director del Doral Academy Sr. Douglas Rodríguez, profesores y cerca de un centenar de estudiantes estuvieron presentes al recibir dicho reconocimiento. Rodríguez aprovechó la ocasión para hacer un reconocimiento al Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez por su excelente liderazgo, compromiso y amistad durante los últimos 8 años de servicio. También agradeció al Alcalde Bermúdez por su interés en el desarrollo académico del Sistema Escolar del Doral, el cual ha sido calificado como “A” durante varios años consecutivos. Al referirse al Programa Financiero, el Sr. Rodríguez destacó la importancia de la educación de calidad, no sólo en las aulas sino en el “mundo real”. En este sentido destacó la importancia de la oportunidad de liderazgo y experiencias prácticas que los estudiantes de nivel su-

Puesto que entiende que este éxito se ha materializado gracias a la ardua labor de muchos “maestros, padres de familia, organizaciones de PTA, y por supuesto, estudiantes comprometidos a involucrarse y trabajar por sus metas”, tomó un tiempo para agradecer a todos ellos por su contribución y les animó a continuar siendo tan exitosos como lo son ahora, pues “esta no va a ser la única escuela con este programa. Muchos otros tratarán de copiar el fantástico trabajo que se ha hecho aquí”. Como lo explicara más adelante el Sr. Soto, lo que hace este programa tan interesante es que gente joven; treinta estudiantes para ser más específicos, en edades comprendidas entre 17 y 20 años, de todo Estados Unidos son los que evalúan cada proyecto e iniciativa participante, y son “ellos los que tienen la responsabilidad de tomar una decisión sobre qué proyectos, organizaciones sin fines de lucro y escuelas son las mejores a reconocer con este premio”. Esta donación es también un reconocimiento muy memorable para esta comunidad: “Hemos recibido cerca de 969 solicitudes de todo el país este año: 68 fueron aprobadas y 11 provenían de Florida pero Academy Charter Preparatory School fue la única escuela secundaria en todo el Estado de Florida en recibir el “State Farm Youth Advisory Board Grant” y es el primero de su tipo”, agregó el Sr. Soto en el momento en que hacia entrega a la escuela del importante cheque. El proyecto “Firebird Nest Project”, como se conoce a estas clases de educación financiera, fue concebido por primera vez en Doral Academy como un medio para que los estudiantes comprendieran las responsabilidades de la administración del dinero y la toma de
decisiones financieras inteligentes. Los estudiantes de Álgebra Avanzada/Aplicaciones Financieras han tenido un papel muy activo en el desarrollo del programa y son los verdaderos ganadores de este premio. No sólo un componente importante de su calificación se basa en la exitosa implementación y mantenimiento de un negocio rentable dentro de la escuela de negocios, sino también, se espera que estos jóvenes inspiren a otros estudiantes a seguir una trayectoria empresarial emprendedora. El profesor Corazón, líder de la iniciativa, explicó en detalle lo que se ha hecho hasta ahora y dió la oportunidad a los estudiantes Alexandra Montero, Melissa Campana y Melina Vargas de representar al equipo principal y compartir sus experiencias: “Esta ha sido un gran oportunidad para todos nosotros. Hemos aprendido aspectos claves sobre el espíritu empresarial, liderazgo y responsabilidad. Fuimos los primeros en darle forma a la idea, contar el dinero y prestar el servicio. Hemos tenido mucha presión, pero en última instancia, ha sido una gran experiencia que dejará huella y estará con nosotros por el resto de nuestras vidas”....”Cuando nos presentaron a esta oportunidad no teníamos ni idea que se convertiría en lo que es ahora, pero gracias a este programa, ahora podemos entender lo que un trabajo regular puede exigir: ética, responsabilidad, puntualidad y todo lo que encontraremos en el mundo de los negocios. También podemos proveer y servir a nuestra comunidad. Basado en lo que hemos hecho en los últimos dos años, ¿quién sabe lo que podemos llegar a hacer en el futuro?”. Garcia, as members of the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, awarded Doral Academy Charter Preparatory School with a $25,000 grant for their Financial Literacy classes. Principal Rodriguez took time to express kind words of recognition to Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez for his excellent leadership; commitment and friendship during the last 8 years of service in the City. He also thanked Mayor Bermudez for his interest in the academic development of the Doral School System which has been rated “A” for several years. Talking about this financial program, Mr. Rodriguez highlighted the importance of quality education, not only in the classrooms but in the “real world”. For example, Doral Academy students will

He also understands that this success is real because of the hard work of many “teachers, parents, PTA organizations, and committed students that get involved and work for their goals.” That’s why he personally thanked all of them for their contribution and encouraged them to continue to be as successful as they are now because “this won’t be the only school with this program. Many others will try to copy the fantastic job done here.” As it was later explained by Mr. Soto, what makes this program so interesting is that young people; thirty students, to be more specific, ages 17-20, from across the United States are the ones who evaluate each project and each initiative, and “they are responsible for making a decision on which projects, nonprofit organizations and schools are the best to be recognized with this great award.” This grant is also a very memorable recognition for this community: “We received close to 969 applications nationwide this year: 68 were approved and 11 came from Florida but Doral Academy Charter Preparatory School was the only High School in the whole State of Florida to receive the State Farm Youth Advisory Board Grant and this is the first of its kind,” added Mr. Soto at the time the huge check was given to the school. The Firebird Nest Project, as this financial literacy program is called, was first conceived at Doral Academy in order for students to understand the responsibilities of managing money and making smart financial decisions. Students in the Advanced Algebra/Financial Applications class had a very active role in the development of the program and they are the ultimate winners of this award. Not only a major component of their grade will be based on the successful implementation and maintenance of
a profitable in-school business but also, they are expected to inspire other young students to follow a business-entrepreneur path. Mr. Corazon, staff leader on this initiative, explained in detail what has been done so far and also introduced students Alexandra Montero, Melissa Campana and Melina Vargas who were called to represent the lead team as they shared their experiences: “This has been a great opportunity for all of us. We’ve learned key aspects about entrepreneurship, leadership and responsibility. We were the first ones to put together the whole idea, to count the money, to provide the service. We had a lot of pressure but ultimately, it’s being a great experience and it will be with us for the rest of our lives knowing that we left our footprint here and we will continue to grow”….”When we were introduced to this opportunity we had no idea that it would become what it is now, but thanks to this program we can now understand what future jobs we may have and what a regular job can demand: work ethic, responsibility, punctuality, everything that we may encounter in the business world. We can also provide for and serve our community. Based on what we were able to do in the past two years, who knows what we can do in the future.” The event closed with a very emotional farewell to Mayor Bermudez who received a “Firebird Sweater” and promised to continue to be present offering his support “for the success of this program.” Once again the City of Doral is proud of the quality of education being provided and the outstanding performance of its students. n a windy and wet morning last October 25th, Officials Travieso, Garciga, Cubela and Feliciano visited the Child Development Center at the U.S. Southern Command Headquarters in Doral with the purpose of teaching the pre-school age children about their jobs, what kind of equipment they use, and basic safety rules. The curious and vivid audience of 26 children was divided into two groups and they were given the opportunity to ask all kinds of questions like why police officers use dogs or why they use guns, to actually touching and using real handcuffs on their teachers. The children also learned about police uniforms, how to use their radios and they had the opportunity to get a closer view of a real police car. “When the officers handcuffed me, the children helped free us. They enjoyed that because it was hands-on. But their favorite part was when they saw the police car, and sounded the siren and turned on the lights… For those kids that was the highlight of their day,” said Edna Quinones, training specialist, adding that the children were also
local community. We want all our children to be safe, confident and active, and the great assistance we get from the Doral community helps make that possible,” said Arthur McQueen, spokesman for U.S. Army Garrison-Miami. These kinds of services can also be requested by any private company as a way to support the community.

As usual, they were ahead on prevention teaching these little children safety tricks such as when to call 911 and the importance of not talking to strangers. It was also touching to see how they showed their support by wearing “Pink Badges” during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Career Day at the SOUTHCOM Child Development Center was another great example of the partnerships we have with the

T
his month of November, known for two major holidays, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving, I would like to expand on the previous article describing the Military Affairs Board and remember a couple of people that deserve special mention for their service to this community. During the difficult times we are living; with natural disasters, economic struggles and war; it is truly fitting to think about the brave men and women who have served our great country, combining the essence of both holidays. As we gather around the dinner table on Thanksgiving, with family and friends, let us remember the sacrifices of our veterans, with gratitude for our own lives and the freedoms we enjoy. Last week, while speaking to the crowd in attendance at the street naming ceremony for Rev. Jorge Comesaña, I had the honor of sharing how this great man of God and his wife cared for me while I was in a coma at the Mayport Naval Base Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida; after being injured during my service in the Marines. The first face I saw, as I opened my eyes; the caring hands that brought me Cuban food, as a way to comfort me. Their service and care for me, is something I’m grateful for and something that we are working to replicate and multiply with the newly formed Military Affairs Board. The other person from our community I want to remember is Sergeant Reich, who lost his battle with cancer at age 25 as an active duty Marine. The active, retired, disabled, reserve and deceased military personnel in Miami-Dade County deserve our gratitude and are in need of our care. The Military Affairs Board I sponsored and chair, will advocate on behalf of military personnel and their families on issues like health care, housing, loans, pension benefits, education, employment, incarceration, reintegration, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training, and insurance. Every single one of the 24 board members is committed to this mission and has become part of one of the following committees to do so: The By-Laws, Legal and Finance Committee, the Special Events Committee, the Employment and Housing Committee, the Health and Welfare Committee and the BRAC Committee- which will play a very important role. The BRAC Committee is the one relating to the Base Realignment and Closure process. Its duties and responsibilities involve: (1) Working with other entities such as federal and state agencies, to represent Miami-Dade County’s interests by ensuring that local military bases remain open as part of the next BRAC round, potentially scheduled
for 2015; (2) Maximizing any opportunities for MiamiDade County that may be realized from any potential realignment; (3) Minimizing any negative impacts to local communities; (4) Developing a comprehensive plan approved by the Military Affairs Board to be recommended to the Board of County Commissioners after evaluating infrastructure needs, land use needs, twenty first century mission of the Armed Forces and community support; (5) Working with military bases in South Florida in order to put together a vision for the future and a plan of relevance; and (6) Providing advice and recommendations approved by the Military Affairs Board to the Board of County Commissioners regarding any actions that it may take to further MiamiDade County’s interests with relation to any further BRAC round. As we start to put every piece in its place and get the gears moving toward this worthy cause, we want our community to be informed and embrace the mission. Help us promote measures that will enhance the quality of life of our service men and women and their families; as well as advocate for their needs. n October 30, 2012, Miami Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz and the CEO of Badia Spices, Joseph “Pepe” Badia, packaged and labeled bottles of Badia’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil in an effort to help raise funds for The Dan Marino Foundation, which assists and treats those with autism. From now until December 31, 2012, Badia Spices will donate 5% of the proceeds from every bottle sold to The Dan Marino Foundation to empower children and young adults with autism so their future can take root and blossom. “As a generous contributor to our community, I was ecstatic that my friend Pepe Badia gave me the opportunity to partner up with him and his team for this very worthy international campaign.” said Commissioner Diaz. “I encourage everyone to purchase a bottle of Badia’s extra virgin olive oil and help with this very worthy cause.” In 2011, Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz sponsored a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to establish the Dan Marino Foundation Florida Vocational College, which assists students ages 18 to 28 who have development disabilities and who are no longer eligible for exceptional student education funding due to age or high school graduation. Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that impairs communication skills and social abilities. There is no known cause or cure for autism, which is estimated to affect 1 out of every 88 children born in the United States. The Symbolism Stage in your Child´s Drawing (Part 1)
B
y the age of 6 most children have established a series of graphic shapes or symbols to represent the objects in their environment: a house, a tree, a person, etc. These symbols are a result of the concepts the child has constructed about each object, rather than of direct observation. When a child makes a connection between image and idea, assigning meaning to a drawn shape, the shape becomes a symbol (Hurwits & Day). This is why each child’s choice of symbols will be very different from any other child’s. Arriving at this stage at an early period will result in a premature lack of flexibility. The longer it takes for the child to arrive at this stage, the richer and more detailed will his drawings be. However, at some point between 6 and 9 years of age the child needs this period of rest where he assures himself through repetition that he has the ability to draw a house, a person, a tree. As long as the child thinks he is drawing a Tree, a House, a Person, the drawing will stay the same. But if, for example, he decides to draw a “big man”, each child will change the drawing concept: one will make the legs longer, the other will enlarge every part, a third one will only enlarge the head. The specific way a child decides to modify his drawing to represent the new concept is related to aspects of his personality. These changes are highly significant for the child and should not be “corrected”, for they reflect the development of a personal creative process. In this stage, as in the previous one, the child uses exaggeration of size and omission of a detail to express emotions. That which is important in a certain experience is exaggerated, and what is not important is omitted. The symbolic drawing will change when a new experience affects the child´s emotions. For example, if a girl is afraid to loose her doll, she will probably draw herself holding it tightly. To express this, she will change her concept of herself by exaggerating the hands. Exaggeration is used by children in two kinds of experiences: when an object is very important to the child, and when the child considers body feelings important. In the latter case, it will seem to an adult that the child draws “out of proportion”, but what is going on is that he is emphasizing the emotional size rather than the visual proportions of the body. Needless to say, correcting the child in this case would result in an interference in the child´s capacity to express emotions and connect with the experiences that generate them.

La etapa del simbolismo en el arte de tu hijo (Parte 1)
A
los 6 años la mayoría de los niños ha establecido un repertorio grafico o símbolos que utilizan para representar las cosas en su medio: una casa, un árbol, una persona. Estos símbolos resultan de los conceptos que el niño ha construido sobre cada objeto, y no de la observación directa. Cuando un niño establece una conexión entre una imagen y una idea, asignándole significado a la figura que ha dibujado, esa figura se convierte en un símbolo (Hurwits & Day). Por eso es que los símbolos son individuales y particulares en cada niño. Llegar a esta etapa de manera prematura presupondrá una falta prematura de flexibilidad. Cuanto mas tarde el niño en llegar a esta etapa, mas rico y detallado será su dibujo. De todos modos, en algún momento entre los 6 y 9 años el niño necesita este periodo de descanso donde reafirma su capacidad de dibujar una casa, una persona, un árbol y, a través de la repetición, se convence de que domina esta destreza. Mientras que el niño este representando el concepto de Casa, Persona, Arbol, el dibujo permanecerá igual. Pero si por ejemplo decide representar un ¨hombre grande” cada niño variara su dibujo de manera particular: alargando las piernas, agrandando todo el dibujo, solo agrandando la cabeza. La manera en que el niño decide modificar su dibujo para representar el concepto nuevo es un reflejo de características especificas de su personalidad. Estos cambios son muy significativos para el niño y no deben ser corregidos, ya que tienen que ver con el desarrollo del proceso creativo en cada individuo. En esta etapa, como en las anteriores, el niño utiliza la exageración o la omisión para expresar emociones. Aquello que es importante en una experiencia se agranda fuera de proporción, y lo que no lo es, se omite. El concepto rígido cambia cuando una nueva experiencia genera un emoción. Por ejemplo, si una niña tiene miedo de perder su muñeca es posible que se dibuje sosteniéndola fuertemente. El recurso que emplea es agrandar sus manos. La exageración se da cuando un niño considera un objeto muy importante o cuando la emoción esta vinculada a un sentimiento en el cuerpo el niño. En el ultimo caso parecería que el niño dibuja de manera desproporcionada, pero lo que esta haciendo es pasar del énfasis en lo visual al énfasis en lo emocional. De mas esta decir que corregir al niño en este caso intervendría en la capacidad que tiene el pequeño para expresar sus emociones y contactarse con ellas.

etomando la continuación del artículo pasado. Somos seres únicos, irrepetibles, con un conjunto único de circunstancias en la vida y con una constitución corporal única. Si es que somos tan únicos, porque es que seguimos dietas y teorías que están dirigidas a un grupo masivos de personas? Todos los factores que nos hacen diferentes uno de otros, también, deben ser considerados en la determinación de los enfoques curativos naturales o planes dietéticos. Lastimosamente, La mayoría de las dietas no estás realizadas pensando en la individualidad del ser humano, sino enfocándose en tan solo un resultado y bastante mercadeo (el arte de generar bastante dinero) pero ese no es el tema. El ser humano no es un robot de molde, no todos los cuerpos reaccionaran de la manera deseada a la dicha dieta de moda. Lo único que funcionara es una nutrición personalizada tomando en cuenta varios factores, uno muy importante es nuestra individualidad bioquímica o “nuestro tipo de sangre.” Ya que debido a sus características y composición, cada tipo de sangre asimila de diferentes maneras los alimentos. Y al elegir los correctos alimentos, que son compatibles con nuestro tipo de sangre, estos trabajaran en total armonía, y serán usados como fuente de nutrientes y combustible para que el organismo realice sus funciones con eficacia para un salud optima. Es por esto, que es de gran importancia comer alimentos que son beneficiosos para nuestro tipo de sangre y alejarnos de otros que sean incompatibles, por más de que sean ricos a nuestro paladar, nuestro cuerpo no disfrutara de aquel sabor rico que tan solo durara unos pocos segundos, ya que desafortunadamente, hay algunos alimentos que aunque lucen indefensos, al ser injeridos, resultaran un efecto adverso a nuestro cuerpo causando una inapropiada aglutinación en la sangre .La cual, generara anticuerpos, que se unirán como un ejército en la sangre para defenderse del alimento incompatible, pues los consideran invasores foráneos. Este alimento no va a poder ser descompuesto o digerido apropiadamente. Las vitaminas y los minerales no serán absorbidos en el torrente sanguíneo para nutrir y tampoco servirá de combustible para que el cuerpo realice sus funciones. El organismo, reaccionara ante este alimento no deseado como lo hace ante cualquier sustancia desconocida. Produciendo ciertos trastornos como son los dolores intestinales, la flatulencia, la sobre llenura y hasta la diarrea y el aumento de peso (como grasa excesiva). La buena noticia, es que esta situación podría ser prevenida si usted come de acuerdo a su tipo de sangre, elemento muy importante que sirve de guía alimenticia para los planes de adelgazamiento efectivo, correcto, saludable y duradero. Para esto, lo principal saber a qué tipo de sangre pertenecemos: A, B, AB, u O; para así, seleccionar el alimento correcto. Y como resultado la naturaleza nos recompensará con un estado de salud óptima y un peso que vaya en armonía con nuestra constitución.

Por lo tanto, deben eliminar el uso del trigo de su dieta y abstenerse de comer panes, pastas, dulces horneados y otros productos elaborados con trigo y/o harina de trigo. Por su toxicidad deben evitar al máximo el uso de la carne de cerdo y sus derivados, incluyendo el jamón; también evitar el maní, así como de los frijoles rojos tipo “kidney”, igualmente las lentejas, la naranja y el café. De otro lado deben abstenerse de ingerir papa y plátanos. En relación a los productos lácteos (derivados de la leche) estos deben limitarse solamente al uso de queso de tipo mozzarella bajo en grasa. También deben evitar cocinar con aceite vegetal, así como de maíz y de maní. Alimentos que engorda al grupo sanguíneo O: Trigo (todos sus productos), leche de vaca, proteina whey, papas, plátanos (banana), maíz, maní, frijoles rojos y lentejas. TIPO DE SANGRE “B”: El único tipo de sangre que puede disfrutar de una variedad de productos lácteos, los vegetales verdes y las carnes pero con la importantísima excepción del “pollo” son también beneficiosos para los tipo B. Deben evitar el maíz, el maní y los productos elaborados con trigo, todos los cuales se les hace difícil digerir y por tanto promueven su aumento de peso y grasa corporal. Igualmente absténgase de ingerir crustáceos de todo tipo. Puede consumir pescado blanco (como el salmón, el bacalao, el pargo, etc.) con total confianza. Podrán disfrutar de la gran mayoría de los productos de la leche y sus derivados, pero deberá hacer excepción del Helado, que es perjudicial para el tipo sanguíneo B. los huevos podrán utilizarse en forma moderada (3x semana). Alimentos que engordan al grupo sanguíneo B: el Pollo, maíz, maní, lentejas, tofu y leche de soya. E
s un orgullo para la ciudad del Doral el tener a una profesora de música trabajando en el Shelton Academy, y que está nominada a los premios Latin Grammy 2012 bajo la categoría Mejor Álbum Infantil Latino. Ella es Rita Rosa Ruesga. Se graduó en Cuba como Directora de Coros de la Escuela Nacional de Artes de la Habana. Rita ha estado expuesta a la música desde muy pequeña puesto que su madre tocaba piano y cantaba en una iglesia en Cuba. Lleva más de 16 años en este país y ha trabajado tanto en el área de la docencia, así como en la industria del entretenimiento, montando y llevando repertorios de niños para un conocido programa de televisión hispano. Ruesga está nominada con su disco Canciones de Agua, una grabación con composiciones originales en donde a través de sus temas se le enseña al niño como conservar nuestro medio ambiente. Al hablar con Ruesga es fácil contagiarse de su entusiasmo por buscar los medios para transmitirle a las generaciones futuras esas canciones o melodías con las que muchos crecimos, pero debido al bombardeo de la música comercial hemos dejado de disfrutar. Dice Ruesga, “Los arreglos que yo uso son bien sencillos, con sonoridades modernas pero buscando que sean atractivas para los niños”. En el repertorio de su último disco hay composiciones muy simpáticas (como El jabón loco, donde se transmite el mensaje que si el jabón se cae mientras nos duchamos se malgasta el agua, un recurso natural tan preciado). Es por este estilo que las canciones de este disco buscan crear conciencia sobre nuestro ambiente de una forma divertida y original. Esta producción fue llevada bajo la dirección de Bayron Ramos y fue grabada con artistas invitados como: Albita Rodriguez, Daniel Santacruz, Willie Panama, Paula Zuleta, y Maria Ruesga, entre otros. Con este disco Ruesga consigue su tercera nominación a los premios Latin Grammy. Anteriormente, en el 2009, obtuvo su primera nominación con el disco Rita Rosa en el patio de tu Casa, una compilación de música tradicional infantil latina que incluye temas como “Duérmete mi Niño, Mambrú, El Ratoncito Miguel, y otros más que a muchos nos evocan nuestra infancia. En el 2010 obtuvo su segunda nominación con su producción Insectos y Bicharracos, un álbum de canciones infantiles propias y cuyo protagonistas son el mosquitos, la cucaracha, el grillo, la mariposa y pare de contar. Adicionalmente, Rita Rosa ya ha escrito 2 libros para niños que fueron publicados por Scholastic y en estos momentos está trabajando en el tercero. “Son libros que traen partituras de las canciones, sus melodías, la letra de la canción en español y en inglés al igual que una reseña de la canción”, explica Ruesga. Su primer libro, Cantaba la Rana, ganó mención honorable en el “International Latin Book Awards”, una organización que otorga premios a escritores latinos en EEUU bajo la categoría de publicaciones para niños. Su segunda publicación fue un libro llamado La Piñata que igualmente incluye acordes y partituras junto a una breve explicación para cada canción. Rosa, agrega, “El trabajo investigativo que se lleva a cabo para realizar estos libros es bastante arduo. Es muy interesante ver como las canciones normalmente entran por el Caribe y a medida que viajan al sur cada país va realizando adaptaciones tanto de la melodía como de la letra”. Su más reciente proyecto que está por publicarse es un libro que se llama El Mariachi y a través
del mismo Rita Rosa espera que los niños aprendan sobre instrumentos típicos latinos como la vigüela, el guitarrón, o el violín. A Rita siempre le ha gustado escribir historias para niños y una vez que recibió su primera nominación al Grammy se le abrieron algunas puertas para publicar tan originales publicaciones con el apoyo de Scholastic. “Lo que tenía a mi favor es que en el mercado local casi no había libros de este tipo; si los había venían de otros países pero no eran bilingües, y sin haber salido aun su libro Cantaba la Rana ya había una cantidad significativa de órdenes sobretodo para las escuelas.” Otro proyecto que Ruesga tiene en la actualidad es el West Miami Choir, un coro de niños entre 8 y 15 años que cantan canciones en español. Rita explica, “Muchos artistas locales no encuentran coros para grabar canciones en español y la idea es poder cubrir ese nicho con este grupo de niños.” Así que este 15 de Noviembre debemos estar pendientes para apoyar a Rita Rosa y ver si se gana tan merecido premio (Latin Grammy) por ser una precursora de la preservación y continuidad de las melodías y ritmos que nos destacan como la cultura musical que somos. fter many training days and weekly competitions, the Ronald Reagan Senior High School Swimming Team has successfully brought several of their swimmers to the desired State Swimming competition, to be held in Orlando on November 9 and 10, 2012. For the first time in history of this school, the girls Relay gets through States and they go to one of the most important competition of the State of Florida, in the 400 meters freestyle Relay. Guided by the hand of their young trainer Maria Omaña and the school athletic director Carlos Perez, more than 30 swimmers worked hard in the last weeks to achieve their goals. The swimmer who are competing are: Isabella Paez (100 Fly, 500 Free, 400 Free Relay), Arianna Noya (100 fly, 200 free, 400 free relay), Liz Gallardo (200 free, 400 free relay), Cristal Campocasso (400 free relay), Karl Marvil (100 breast, 200 medley relay), Jose Gonzalez (100 breast, 50 free, 200 medley relay), Miguel Madeira (200 medley relay), Tobias Faucher (200 medley relay), Frank Lam (alternate), and Monica Calderon (alternate). Por primera vez en la historia de este colegio el equipo de Relevo de las niñas logra pasar a los Estatales e ir a una de las competencias más importantes del Estado de la Florida, en la modalidad del Relevo 400 metros libre . major international judo tournament, the Grand Masters World Judo Championships, brought nearly 900 athletes to the Doral Resort & Spa from Thursday through Sunday for a shot at the podium at this prestigious event for fighters 30 years and older. The event brought athletes and their families from around the world, including 25 competitors from Mongolia, 35 from Argentina, nearly 20 from Azerbaijan and nearly 80 from France and Brazil each. Sanctioned by the International Judo Federation and hosted by USA Judo, this was the fourth Grand Masters Championships with many of the younger athletes near their prime and lots of ‘mature’ athletes, some older than 60, convening for the ‘friendly’ floor-pounding throws, arm bars and chokes that define the sport. “Wow! This was a smashing success for USA Judo, for Miami and all of the United States to have so many people from around the world converge here for athletic competition,” said Jose Rodriguez, USA Judo’s Chief Executive Officer. “How exciting to see the world once again come to the United States, and what a neat experience to have them witness how democracy works here by watching the whole presidential election process.” Many of the athletes had reached Miami just in time to watch the ballots counted for the U.S. presidential election last week. Among the “Old School” fighters who stepped on the mats was L.A. Actor of the “Walking Tall” films, Bo Svenson, 71, who wielded justice with an oak bat as his famous 70s character, Sheriff Buford Pusser. Also were several mature Florida athletes, including Steve Thardy, 68, of Florida City, who’s got a big collection of medals from around the country and keeps going back to the mats for more. “These competitions are good for the sport and they are good for people my age,” Thardy said. “It is important to be healthy by staying active and competitive. If you are persistent, anyone can do judo – even at my age.” Roger Crocker, 65, of Tampa, described judo as his own personal fountain of youth – “I think over the years judo has kept me young and happy.” See their stories at USJUDO.ORG. “This is a great tune-up for USA Judo,” Rodriguez said. “We will soon be hosting the World Cadet Championships and in 2014 the World Junior Championships. El cuarto Campeonato Mundial para Veteranos sancionado por la Federación Internacional de Judo y auspiciado por USA Judo, contó con muchos atletas jóvenes, quienes se encuentran en su mejor momento, y también varios “atletas maduros”, algunos mayores de 60 años, reunidos para demostrar sus “amistosas” proyecciones, palancas de brazo y estrangulaciones que definen el deporte. “Wow! ¡Fue realmente un éxito para USA Judo, para Miami y para los Estados Unidos tener tanta gente de todo el mundo reunida aquí para la competencia, dijo Jose Humberto Rodriguez, USA Judo CEO. Qué emocionante fue ver que el mundo, una vez más, vino a los Estados Unidos, y que experiencia para ellos ha sido ver como funciona la democracia en nuestro país al poder presenciar el proceso electoral”, dijo José Rodríguez, USA Judo CEO. Varios de los atletas llegaron a Miami justo a tiempo para ver el conteo de votos para la elección presidencial llevada a cabo la semana pasada. Entre los atletas que compitieron se encuentra el actor de la película “Walking Tall”, Bo Svenson, de 71 años, quien en su personaje famoso de los ‘70, Sheriff Buford Pusser ejercía justicia con un bate de roble. También entre los competidores se encontraron varios atletas de Florida, tales como Steve Thardy, de 68 años, de Florida City, quien tiene una colección de medallas ganadas en todo el país y continua compitiendo buscando más. “Estos campeonatos son buenos para el deporte y también son buenos para la gente de mi edad”, dijo Thardy. “Es importante estar sano para mantenerse activo y competitivo. Si se es persistente, cualquier persona puede hacer judo - incluso a mi edad”. Roger Crocker, de 65 años, de Tampa, describió al judo como su propia fuente personal de juventud - “Creo que en los últimos años judo me ha mantenido joven y feliz”. Thomas and Estrella Eriksen tied the knot On October 26, 2012, Thomas C. Eriksen, Facility Manager of Covanta Energy Corporation and Estrella Eriksen were happily married at Doral Park Country Club. The couple tied the knot in a private ceremony with close family and friends. We wish the newlyweds much happiness, prosperity, good health and a long life together.

The DOHCAF celebrated their second annual Health Care Congress on Saturday, October 20, 2012. The event was held at the Conference Center of the Americas at the Historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. It was attended by 65 physicians, healthcare providers, businesses and the community as well as many industry leaders. Dr. Aizik Wolf was one of the guest speakers giving a lecture on Gamma Knife radiosurgery for the treatment of various neurological diseases. He gave a brief keynote speech describing his use of the technique and its advantages.

Hispanic Art Expressions Gallery Night This past October 18th, giving start to the Hispanic Heritage month, Carmen Johnson, City of Doral’s Cultural Affairs Advisory Board Chair along with Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez gave start to the Hispanic Art Expressions Gallery Night at the Doral Park Country Club. During the event the students of the 2012 Art Contest Winners were recognized. Sara Requena, 7th grade student at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center and José Benavidez, student of 11th grade at Ronald Reagan Doral/Senior High were the winners.

El Sábado 20 de octubre a las 8 am un camión llego al 7905 NW 36 St en Doral con una misteriosa escultura cubierta totalmente por un manto negro. Fue depositada frente al local que pronto ocupara el nuevo restaurante Las Brasas. 3000 libras de aluminio fueron cortados, modelados y soldados para crear esta monumental escultura que espera ser develada en una fecha próxima. El pasado lunes 5 de noviembre el Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez cortó oficialmente la cinta de apertura del Restaurante Divieto. Bermúdez les agradeció la confianza por invertir en la ciudad de Doral y les dio un reconocimiento como bienvenida y para desearles la mejor de las suertes. EL restaurante abrió al público el pasado 31 de Julio, pero hasta ahora se realizo este acto protocolario. Divieto pertenece a una empresa restaurantera que abrió su primer restaurante en los Estados
Unidos hace 6 años en la ciudad de Estero, FL y este es su segundo restaurante en el país. Tienen una cadena de restaurantes en la Ciudad de México y Divieto es uno de sus conceptos consentidos. Al acto acudieron: EL alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez, Santiago Lopez Director de operaciones y Yanina Torres PR; Joan Saenz, Gerente General; Luis Zavala, Chef Ejecutivo, así como colaboradores y amigos de la prensa local.
