e are excited to be entering a new year and decade to continue improving our great City and providing the top-level municipal services that make Doral the premier place to live, work, learn and play. As we prepared to welcome 2020, several residents shared their thoughts with Doral Family Journal on what they hope for moving forward. We thank them for their participation and feedback! Below is some information on those topics.

MOBILITY

Biking and walking is not only great for your health but also a great alternative to getting around. While there are some challenges with several of our roads being inherited by Miami-Dade County when the City of Doral incorporated, the City has been working to improve that by ensuring that every new road segment constructed is a complete road with sidewalks and lanes that encourage biking and walking. Also, as part of the Doral Parks Bond, the City’s bikeway trail network will be improved and augmented by approximately 5 miles of multi-purpose trails. Existing segments enhancements will include trail lighting, pavement markings, and signage. Our Doral Trolley service is also expanding. Starting February 3rd, we’ll have two additional trolley added to the midday peak hours during school pickups. Several students use this service to get home and this new addition will help with that demand. That brings the trolley fleet to 16 vehicles now! Recent changes to the routes include service to Florida International University (FIU) and Sunday service. Another great and free option is the Freebee service. Freebee is an on-demand, electric transportation that easily gets you around through the use of an app. All you need to do is request this service on your smart phone through the Ride Freebee app.

TRAFFIC

Traffic is a regional challenge for South Florida as a whole. There is heightened traffic on weekdays in Doral as we have around 100,000 people that come in and out of our City to either work or traverse through Doral, as we are surrounded by three major highways. Traffic is a big concern to the City and we continue to work on viable solutions to alleviate

congestion in our streets, be it by connecting our grid (eg. NW 102 Ave), enhancing our Trolley service, working closely with Miami-Dade County on traffic light timing (Miami-Dade County owns and operates all traffic signalization), and now with a seat on the MiamiDade Transportation Planning Organization held by Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, in which collaboration occurs on important projects like the widening of NW 25th Street. Another important aspect of decreasing traffic congestion is driver’s following the rules when they’re on the road. Simple actions like not blocking intersections or not texting so you’re fully attentive can make everyone’s rider safer and more efficient. Our Doral Police does a great job at enforcing these and all laws to protect the quality of life. This fiscal year, 40% of the City’s budget went towards police and public safety to add additional officers that can assist with important issues like traffic control.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

We’re home to over 10,000 companies with an average of 120 new companies opening each month. The City’s Economic Development Division works to elevate Doral as a worldclass international and domestic destination for trade and commerce, collaborating with other intergovernmental agencies, chambers and organizations to implement programs to help our businesses thrive. We aim to assist our small to mid-sized businesses with business development activities, entrepreneurial education and grants programs. We currently have another cycle open for the Façade Improvement Grant Program, accepting applications before March 6, 2020 by 3:30pm for businesses that are renovating their business structure for a reimbursement up to $10,000. PARKS & RECREATION

Thanks to the resident’s vision and support of world-class parks, Doral’s parks will only be getting

bigger and better! Plans for more green spaces, recreational areas, and facilities are underway as park of the Doral Parks Bond which was approved by Doral voters in November 2018. Projects include a cultural arts center, White Course Park, aquatic facility, and the buildout of Doral Central Park. The City of Doral has always had the mission of providing top recreational options and experiences for those of all ages and capabilities in our parks. NIGHTLIFE

As Doral continues to flourish so do the options for our residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy themselves. In addition to our electric gastronomy and diverse shops, more and more places in our City are offering entertainment. CityPlace for instance has a wide array of venues great for dancing, comedy shows and bowling. Also, Downtown Doral will soon be the home of the highly anticipated Doral Yard (formerly Wynwood Yard). We are also excited about the revamp of the industrial/commercial district located to the north of the Downtown Doral area, “NODO” -- North of Downtown Overlay District. When this area becomes a mixed-use area, we’ll see that come alive as a new and vibrant district. MOVILIDAD

Andar en bicicleta y caminar no solo es excelente para su salud, sino también una excelente alternativa para moverse. Si bien hay algunos desafíos con varias de nuestras carreteras heredadas por el Condado de Miami-Dade cuando se incorporó la Ciudad de Doral, la Ciudad ha estado trabajando para mejorar eso al garantizar que cada nuevo segmento de carretera construido sea una carretera completa con aceras y carriles que fomenten andar en bicicleta y caminar. Además, como parte de Doral Parks Bond, la red de senderos para bicicletas de la Ciudad se mejorará y aumentará en aproximadamente 5 millas de senderos multipropósito. Las mejoras existentes en los segmentos incluirán iluminación de senderos, marcas en el pavimento y señalización. Nuestro servicio Doral Trolley también se está expandiendo. A partir del 3 de febrero, tendremos dos carros adicionales agregados a las horas pico del mediodía durante las recogidas de la escuela. Accurate figures will make Doral eligible for more federal funds

he Census is a process mandated by the Constitution. Accurate account of the residents in the country impacts all important decisions: legislative districts, urban planning, tax funds distribution, etc. Census Day is April 1st. Before that date every single household in the United States will receive a communication requiring the accounting of all its residents, regardless of immigration status. It is a confidential process, and this year residents can answer the questions by phone, mail or online. Population in the United States has been counted since 1790 and the US Census Bureau as we know it was established in 1902. The census happens every ten years and provides valuable information on all topics that impact the life in the country. In the City of Doral this is the second time the population will be accounted as a separate municipality. The first time was in 2010, merely seven years after incorporation when the US Bureau calculated the population of the Doral at 45,704 residents. Estimates put that figure at 61,824 in 2018. “This past decade has been one of growth for the city” said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “We grew faster than people expected and I think moving forward we will have some growth but not at the speed we had the past decade. The key thing now is to make sure that the new growth is controlled, and we maintain the quality of life of the community”

CENSUS DATA IS IMPORTANT FOR DECISION MAKING

Data obtained from the census allows government and businesses to plan and develop products and services to fulfill the needs of the population. Based on the numbers from the census the federal government assigns funds and resources for health, education, transportation, housing and other services depending on the location people reside. In addition, legislative districts are defined based on census data; the amount of population in an area determines the amount of representatives a state will have in the U. S. Congress and also state legislatures. Mayor Bermudez explained it is very important

where large groups of people reside, who might not have been included on household accounts, and also will perform quality check interviews to ensure accuracy. From May to July all homes that did not answer the census will be visited to verify the information and by December the Census Bureau will deliver their results to the President and Congress. By the end of March 2021 redistricting counts will be sent to the states, which determines legislative districts based on changes on the amount of residents.

IMMIGRANTS SHOULD BE COUNTED TOO

to make sure everybody is counted. For the City of Doral, this census numbers would certify that the population in Doral has surpassed the estimated 60,000 residents. “Hopefully, if everybody is counted it gives us the opportunity to have access to more federal grants.”

TIMELINE FOR THE 2020 CENSUS

The reference date for the census is April 1st, 2020. It means that, upon receiving the invitation to participate in the census, the data to be included in the answering form should refer to all people residing in a household by April 1st. The effort of organizing a census implies a monumental task. During 2019 the Census Bureau canvassed areas that experienced a lot of change and growth to ensure that all addresses are registered to receive census participation forms, and also organized more than 200 census offices around the country to coordinate local activities toward the process in 2020. According to the timeline published by the Census Bureau, remote villages in Alaska will be the first to be counted, starting January 21st. Official mail from the census, with instructions on how to respond online, by mail or by phone, will be distributed to households around the country from March 12th to March 20th; people are expected to answer by April 1st. Homeless people will be counted from March 30 to April 1st. During the month of April census takers will visit colleges, senior centers and other places

A community with a large amount of immigrants like Doral needs education on why the census is important and that every person counted makes a difference, regardless of their immigration status. The data collected on the census includes: amount of residents in a household; homeownership status; sex, relationship, age, race and ethnic origin of each resident. It will never ask for the Social Security Number, party affiliations, bank or credit card accounts data nor request donations. All personal information is kept confidential, and by federal law it can only be used for statistical purposes. Therefore, regardless of their immigration status people, have to answer all census questions and allow to be counted. “It is important that everybody is counted. If someone is not here legally I can understand their concerns” affirmed Bermudez. “The census should definitely not be used to point out who is here legally or illegally […]. We would hope that everybody gets counted, because to get a fair estimate of the resources as a city and as a county, everyone should be counted, and that includes those who might not be here legally.”

l censo es un proceso establecido en la Constitución. Tener una cantidad precisa de los residentes en el país impacta todas las decisiones importantes: distritos legislativos, planificación urbana, distribución de fondos fiscales, etc. El Día del Censo es el 1 de abril; antes de esa fecha, cada hogar en los Estados Unidos recibirá una comunicación para contar a todos sus residentes, independientemente de su estado migratorio. Es un proceso confidencial, y este año los residentes pueden responder las preguntas por teléfono, correo o en línea. La población en EEUU se ha contado desde 1790 y la Oficina del Censo, tal como la conocemos, se estableció en 1902. Es un proceso que ocurre cada diez años y proporciona información valiosa sobre todos los temas que afectan la vida en el país. En Doral, esta es la segunda vez que la población se contabilizará como municipalidad independiente. La primera vez fue en 2010, solo siete años después de la incorporación, cuando la Oficina del Censo calculó la población en 45,704 residentes. One of the main recommendations for 2020 is to avoid the abbreviation of the year as just “20”, because it will be very easy to alter the date by adding digits after the “20”.

s we start the year, we are already noticing that this will be a very active year in several areas, especially politics, sports and technology, this last one never stops surprising us. We have compiled 20 events, novelties and tendencies that we will live throughout 2020, which is not only a nice looking figure but also marks the start of a new decade and for a lot of people it has been a symbol of the fulfillment of goals and/or the start of new projects.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS One of the events that takes much of the worldwide attention are the Presidential Elections in the United States, even when these will take place on November 3rd, they are already one of the main events of the year. Donald Trump will try to be reelected and stay in the White House for four more years, while the Democrats will have to elect soon their Candidate, who will face Trump. Besides the main elections, eleven states will also hold elections to Governor. The City of Doral will also have to elect three positions: Mayor, and two Council member seats. CENSUS The 2020 Census will be the 24th Census in the United States. National Census Day will be April 1st, 2020. Participation in this census is of the essence, because depending on the results of it is the fair distribution of more than 675 thousand million dollars of Federal Funds for schools, hospitals, highways and

public works in the country and also the redefinition of the seats in the Congress. The United States Constitution establishes that each person in the country must be accounted for every ten years and it is a duty to participate in the census. THE 54TH SUPER BOWL IN FEBRUARY, which this year is a leap year. This is one of the most important and anticipated events of the year, drawing lots of people, and it will take place in Miami. The Hard Rock Stadium will host the 54th final for the NFL among two teams that at this time are still to be determined. Those who have already confirmed their appearance are Shakira and Jennifer Lopez who will perform during the half time show. BREXIT Another important event taking place in 2020 is the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, better known as Brexit. This process intends to allow the United Kingdom to stop being a member of the European Union. After a referendum that took place in 2016, where 51.9% of the voters supported leaving the EU, the Government started a two-year process that should have ended on March 29th, 2019. This due date was extended until April 12th, 2019 and then extended again for a second time until October 31st, 2019, it was then extended a third time until January 31st, 2020. After this last date, except in the case that there is any additional agreement, the United Kingdom will automatically abandon the European Union without any agreement at all. GLOBAL EDUCATION PACT For May 14th, 2020, Pope Francis has called to a worldwide event to launch his Global Education Pact. This event will take place

in Rome, Italy. According to his own words, “There is thus a need to create an “educational village”, in which all people, according to their respective roles, share the task of forming a network of open, human relationships. According to an African proverb, “it takes a whole village to educate a child”. We have to create such a village before we can educate.” THE OLYMPIC GAMES. Even when the Opening Ceremony will take place on July 24th, the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 will run mainly during August of this year. The 32nd edition of this important sports event will see the addition of Baseball, Karate, Surf, Skateboard and Hiking, together with a lot of new events in categories that already participate in the Games.

SOCCER FOOTBALL MONTHS June and July of 2020 will be soccer football months. The Copa America and the Euro Copa will dominate the sports scene and will take place at the same time, from June 12th to July 12th and will be very similar in their organization: both will be played at more than one host city. The Trophy for Europe will be played for the first time in host cities scattered around Europe, these cities are Bilbao, London, Dublin, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Munich, Rome, Budapest, Bucharest, San Petersburgh, and Baku. For the Copa America the host cities will be Argentina and Colombia. MISSION TO MARS 2020. The mission program is going to be launched in July, when the Earth is in the best position relative to Mars in front of it, this in order to achieve the landing with the least possible energy consumption. It consists of twenty-three cameras and two microphones to capture the sounds at the moment of landing. THE YAHOO TIME CAPSULE OPENING. In 2006 Yahoo invited people to place digital items in a virtual time capsule. This digital time capsule will be open during 2020, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Yahoo. TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE. On December 14th we will be witnessing a total solar eclipse. This is one of the most important astronomical events that we can witness, this one will be appreciated in Argentina, in the provinces of Neuquen and Rio Negro where the longest time of shadow will take place. The eclipse will also be seen, but partially, in different places of Latin America like Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and the oceans around these countries. NEW VIDEOGAME CONSOLES. It all looks like Sony and Microsoft will be launching their new consoles during 2020. PS5 from Sony and Xbox Project Scarlett from Microsoft will arrive at the end of the year with the promise to bring a new level of games, especially when we talk about graphics. Details are still scarce, but industry experts believe that they will be around $500 each. 2020 WORLD EXPO In October, the 2020 Expo will take place for the first time in Dubai. This spectacular Arab city will host the 2020 World Expo, 192 countries will be participating, these will exhibit the latest in art, technology, science and countless other areas. The 2020 World Expo will take place around a huge interior and exterior area in between Dubai and the Northern border of Abu Dhabi. The main themes of this event will include happiness and environmental stability.

HIGH SPEED TRAINS. Several highspeed railway systems will begin their construction and some other, already in progress will keep on with their progress. Virgin Trains USA will start the construction of a new high-speed train from Victorville, California to Las Vegas, this will run at a speed of 270 km/h. One more line that is already in operation between Miami and West Palm Beach will start its expansion in some years, all the way to Orlando. Also, there is a plan for a high-speed line between Houston and Dallas, this one could start its construction during the Summer of 2020. SPACE TRAVEL. In order to acquire some extra financing, NASA will be opening an International Space Station for private sector tourists in 2020. Each ticket will have a cost of 35,000 per night not including transportation or the previous training needed to be able to withstand the travel into space. Tourists can stay in orbit for as long as 30 days. Each trip has an estimated cost of fifty million dollars. SpaceX and Boeing have been working on the special capsules, Crew Dragon and Starliner. The idea at this point is to start the program with two private trips per year and a total of twelve tourist-astronauts will be able to visit the International Space Station, per year. SELF-DRIVING CARS. It is being said that during 2020 there will be at least 10 million self-driving cars in operation and that in less than 10 more years this system will be totally incorporated into our everyday lives. Mercedes Benz, Tesla Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Google, Uber and BMW are designing cars that won’t need pedals or steering wheel and that will include systems capable to make complex calculations and therefore move in traffic. FLEXIBLE CELLULAR PHONES. In 2019 we received news of several cellular phones with flexible or foldable screens but, very few got into the market. Many of them have a proposed launch date during 2020, these are in search of innovation in a market that has been stagnant for several years in the design area with very few changes among brands and models.

MORE STREAMING SERVICES. The new Apple+ and Disney+ services can redefine the audiovisual marketplace around the world. Apple+ brings a more discreet position, but an important bet for the quality of the content, image and sound. Disney+ on its side, brings in a big revolution in the television arena for 2020. 8K TELEVISION SETS. At the end of 2018 the first 8K television set was commercialized, during 2019 we have known some other models. But now, during the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, many more Smart TV sets that are compatible with this technology will be presented. The main goal during this year is that less expensive 8K models will be launched. JEDDAH TOWER The highest skyscraper in the world. Jeddah Tower has been in construction since 2013 in Saudi Arabia. This is a mega commercial and residential venture with 5.3 million square meters. The tower will be one kilometer high, the viewpoint will be located in between the 157 and 158 floors, at more than 600 meters from the ground, this viewpoint will be reached through two floor elevators that will take passengers up in about 60 seconds. This neo-futuristic tower will also count with a five stars Four Seasons Hotel, duplex homes, and offices with up to 7 floors each and residential areas. THE ASTEROID NAMED “2018 VP1” NASA keeps on with its surveillance of an asteroid that will pass close to the Earth during 2020. The space agency has under constant surveillance a space object that has a surprising high speed and that is expected to pass close to the Earth this year. The asteroid named “2018 VP1” rotates around the Sun at a speed of 34 thousand kilometers per hour, it was discovered on November 3rd, 2018 and since that day it has been closely monitored by scientists. It is not believed to possess a real threat for our planet, but they are still monitoring it.

rrancando el 2020, nos encontramos un año muy activo en diversos sectores, especialmente en la política, los deportes y la tecnología que no deja de sorprendernos cada día. Hemos recopilando 20 acontecimientos, novedades y tendencias que se esperan para el 2020 que no sólo es un año numéricamente llamativo, sino que también marca el inicio de una nueva década y para muchos ha sido tomado como un símbolo del cumplimiento de metas o de inicio de nuevos proyectos.

ELECCIONES PRESIDENCIALES Uno de los eventos que más ocupa la atención mundial en el 2020 son las elecciones presidenciales en Estados Unidos, que, si bien se celebran el 03 de noviembre, es desde ya uno de los acontecimientos de mayor atención para este año. Donald Trump tratará de quedarse en la Casa Blanca por cuatro años adicionales, mientras que los demócratas tendrán que elegir al rival de Trump próximamente. Además del evento principal, 11 estados celebrarán elecciones a gobernación, así como también las habrá en nuestra ciudad de Doral, en la que votaremos por el alcalde y dos puestos de concejales. EL CENSO DEL 2020 será el vigésimo cuarto censo de los Estados Unidos. El Día Nacional del Censo será el 01 de abril de 2020. Participar es esencial, pues de sus resultados depende la justa distribución de más de 675 mil millones de dólares

en fondos federales para escuelas, hospitales, carreteras y obras públicas en todo el país, así como la redefinición de los escaños en el Congreso Nacional. La Constitución de Estados Unidos establece que cada persona en el país debe ser contada cada 10 años y se considera un deber participar en el censo. SUPER BOWL En febrero, se espera uno de los eventos más concurridos y visto del mundo: el Super Bowl. El Hard Rock Stadium de Miami albergará la 54° final de la NFL entre dos equipos que todavía son una incógnita. Quiénes sí ya confirmaron su asistencia fueron Shakira y Jennifer López, que serán las encargadas del mítico show de medio tiempo. “BREXIT” La salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea, también conocida popularmente como “Brexit”, proceso político en curso que persigue el abandono por parte del Reino Unido de su condición de miembro de la Unión Europea. Tras un referéndum celebrado en el 2016 (en el que el 51,9% de los votantes apoyó abandonar la Unión Europea), el Gobierno inició un proceso de dos años que debía concluir con la salida del Reino Unido el 29 de marzo del 2019. Ese plazo fue prorrogado hasta el 12 de abril del 2019, volvió a ser prorrogado hasta el 31 de octubre del 2019 y por tercera vez, fue extendido hasta el 31 de enero del 2020. Pasada esa fecha y salvo acuerdo en contrario, el Reino Unido abandonará automáticamente la Unión Europea sin acuerdo. PACTO EDUCATIVO GLOBAL El Papa Francisco y su llamado para un pacto educativo global. Para el 14 de mayo del 2020, el Papa Francisco ha convocado un evento mundial que se realizará en Roma (Italia). Según sus propias palabras:

“Necesitamos un pacto educativo global que nos eduque en solidaridad universal, a un nuevo humanismo […] Debemos basar los procesos educativos en la conciencia que todo en el mundo está íntimamente conectado”. LOS JUEGOS OLÍMPICOS. Aunque la ceremonia de apertura será el 24 de julio, los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 se desarrollarán en gran medida durante el mes de agosto de este año. A la 32° edición del certamen deportivo por excelencia se le sumarán el béisbol, el karate, el surf, el skateboard y la escalada, así como un montón de nuevos eventos en categorías ya establecidas. LA COPA AMÉRICA Y LA EUROCOPA Junio y julio del 2020 serán los meses del fútbol. La Copa América y la Eurocopa dominarán el escenario deportivo y coincidirán estrictamente en sus fechas (del 12 junio al 12 de julio) y en su estilo de organización: ambos se jugarán en más de una sede. El trofeo del viejo continente se disputará por primera vez en sedes repartidas por toda Europa, ellas son Bilbao, Londres, Dublín, Glasgow, Ámsterdam, Copenhague, Múnich, Roma, Budapest, Bucarest, San Petersburgo y Bakú. Por su parte, la Copa América tiene dos sedes: Argentina y Colombia. LA MISIÓN A MARTE 2020. La misión está programada para lanzarse en julio cuando la Tierra tenga mejor posición frente a Marte para lograr el aterrizaje, es decir, en el momento adecuado para utilizar menos energía. El Mars 2020 se basa en el exitoso diseño de la misión Mars Science LABORATORY DE LA NASA, incluido su rover Curiosity. Cuenta con 23 cámaras y dos micrófonos para capturar los sonidos

del aterrizaje. La apertura de la cápsula del tiempo de Yahoo. En el 2006, Yahoo convocó a las personas a colocar artefactos digitales en una cápsula del tiempo virtual. Los participantes subieron de videos, fotos, poemas, obras de arte y otras presentaciones de diversos valores y el producto final fue entregado al Instituto Smithsonian en Washington para su custodia. Se espera abrir esta cápsula digital en el 2020, coincidiendo con el aniversario Nro.25 de Yahoo. UN ECLIPSE TOTAL DEL SOL es esperado para el 14 de diciembre. Es uno de los eventos astronómicos más importantes y podrá ser apreciado en Argentina, en las provincias de Neuquén y Río Negro, donde ocurrirá el mayor tiempo de sombra de este eclipse. También se podrá ver el eclipse, pero parcialmente, en distintos lugares de Latinoamérica: Chile, Perú, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay y océanos adyacentes. NUEVAS CONSOLAS DE VIDEOJUEGOS. Al parecer el 2020 será el año en que Sony y Microsoft lanzarán sus nuevas consolas. La PS5 de Sony y la Xbox Project Scarlett de Microsoft llegarán a finales de año con la promesa de nuevos niveles de juego, especialmente en términos de gráficos. Los detalles de cada producto son aun desconocidos, aunque los expertos de la industria del juego se adelantan a manifestar que costarán unos $500. Los temas del evento incluirán felicidad y estabilidad ambiental. FERROCARRILES DE ALTA VELOCIDAD. La idea es empezar con dos viajes privados al año y hasta 12 turistasastronautas podrían visitar la Estación Espacial Internacional anualmente. VEHÍCULOS AUTÓNOMOS. Se dice que, en el 2020, 10 millones de vehículos funcionarán de modo autónomo y que, en menos de diez años, este sistema estará incorporado prácticamente a la vida cotidiana. Tanto Mercedes Benz, como Tesla Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Google, Uber y BMW están diseñando modelos en los que no serán necesarios pedales ni volante, con sistemas capaces de realizar cálculos complejos y así moverse en el transito. CELULARES FLEXIBLES. En el 2019 se anunciaron varios celulares con pantallas flexibles o plegables, pero pocos llegaron al mercado. Muchos de ellos tienen su fecha de lanzamiento prevista para 2020 y buscan innovar en un segmento que ha estado unos pocos años bastante parado a nivel de diseño, con pocos cambios entre marcas y generaciones. MÁS STREAMING. La llegada de Apple+ y Disney+ puede redefinir el mercado audiovisual en todo el planeta.

El servicio de Apple+ parte desde una posición más discreta, aunque con una importante apuesta por la calidad de contenidos, calidad de imagen y calidad de sonido. Mientras, Disney+ es una gran revolución que marcará el sector televisivo en el 2020. TELEVISORES 8K. A finales de 2018 se empezó a comercializar el primer televisor 8K y durante 2019 hemos conocido algunos modelos más. Sin embargo, el Consumer Electronics Show 2020 (por su denominación en inglés) de Las Vegas servirá para presentar muchos más modelos de Smart TV compatibles con esta tecnología. Lo principal que se espera con respecto a los televisores 8K es que se lancen modelos más baratos y asequibles. TORRE JEDDAH El rascacielos más alto del mundo. Desde el 2013 está en construcción en Arabia Saudita la esperada Torre Jeddah, dentro de un mega emprendimiento comercial y residencial de 5,3 millones de metros cuadrados. La torre tendrá un kilómetro de alto y el mirador estará ubicado entre los pisos 157 y 158, a más de 600 metros del suelo, a los que se accederá mediante ascensores de dos pisos, que transportarán a los visitantes en alrededor de 60 segundos. En esta torre neo futurista, funcionara además un hotel Four Seassons 5 estrellas, viviendas, dúplex y oficinas de hasta siete pisos, con sectores residenciales. ASTEROIDE “2018 VP1” La NASA vigila el asteroide que pasará cerca de la Tierra en el 2020. La agencia espacial tiene en constante vigilancia un objeto espacial que sorprende por su “super velocidad” y que estaría pasando cerca del planeta Tierra este año. El asteroide bautizado como “2018 VP1” gira alrededor del Sol a una velocidad de 34 mil kilómetros por hora y fue descubierto el 03 de noviembre del 2018, momento desde el cual es seguido por parte de los científicos que descartan un peligro real del asteroide en nuestro planeta, pero no dejan de estar pendiente de este evento.

Pay Less Taxes by applying to the HOMESTEAD EXENTION

If you reside permanently in your home, you have the property title as of January 1st, and you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in the United States, you may qualify to pay less taxes on your home.

f you purchased a home during 2019, then this is the time to start enjoying the tax benefits. State law allows Florida homeowners to claim an exemption of up to $50,000 on their primary residence. This exemption is commonly known as Homestead Exemption. In the event that you have owned a property already and are not yet enjoying this tax discount, you can also take advantage of it and apply to get it. Remember that this might mean significant savings on the property tax bill that you must pay annually between November and March. Please note that the first $25,000 dollars of this exemption apply to all tax authorities, while the second $25,000 dollars excludes the School Board taxes and applies those properties with assessed values over $50,000 dollars. Also, remember that the “non-ad Valorem” portion of your taxes can have a significant impact on the amount you pay annually.

REQUIREMENTS Actually, applying to the Homestead Exemption benefit is very easy, you can do it online, in person at the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser’s offices or by sending your application by regular mail, the most important thing is that you meet the following requirements: have your property title as of January 1st, reside permanently in that property ( this must be the same address than the one in your drivers license, voter registration card, vehicle registration and/or tax return), you must be a United States citizen or permanent resident of the United States and of the State of Florida. Before completing the application, each applicant will need the following information: Property folio number (you can search for your folio number in the Miami-Dade County property search page: https:// www8.miamidade.gov/Apps/PA/propertysearch/#/), your Social Security Number (SSN), birth date,

marital status, Florida Driver’s license number, Florida vehicle registration, Florida voter registration information (for U.S. citizens) and Permanent Resident number (for non-citizens). All of these documents must reflect the address of the property for which the exemption is being requested. If you are applying online, all these documents must have been previously downloaded to your computer, as you will need to upload them at the end of the application into the system. The online application can be made through the page: https://www.miamidade. g o v / A p p s / PA / PA O n l i n e To o l s / A u t o O n l i n e F i l e / ExemptionOnlineMainMenu.aspx. To send it by regular mail, you can mail it at Property Appraiser, PO BOX 013140 Miami, FL 33101-3140. If you want to apply in person, you have two options: one in Downtown Miami, located at the Stephen P. Clark Center (SPCC) at 111 NW First Street, Suite 710, Miami, Florida, 33128; the other one in the South, located at the South Dade Government Center, 10710 SW 211 Street, Suite 207, Cutler Bay, Florida, 33189. The deadline for filing for the Homestead Exemption and its benefits is Monday, March 2nd, 2020. Applications will also be accepted at the “application events” that take place on Saturdays or at night at several locations in the county. Given that the Homestead Exemption is considered a tax benefit, in case you are already enjoying it, but have changed any of the conditions of your home, you must immediately inform the Office of the Property Appraiser; otherwise, you could be sanctioned. If changes are not notified, the homeowner may be subject to 10 years of back taxes, plus a penalty of 15% annual interest and a 50% fine. For example, if you rent your property or a portion of it, you must notify the Property Appraiser of this and understand that you will lose all or a portion of your Homestead Exemption on that property.

Other changes that you must report and process before the Property Appraiser’s Office are, to mention some: Granny Flat’s exemption, any refinancing, changes in the title, successions, and any military order must also be renewed. In addition to the Homestead Exemption, Homeowners in Miami-Dade County may apply to other exemptions such as low-income senior citizen assistance, (if you are 65 years of age or older as of January 1st), Long term resident Senior citizen (applies if you have been living in the property for a minimum of 25 years), $500 if you are a widow and $500 for disability or blindness for civilians. There are also applicable benefits for veterans and civilians with total or permanent disabilities, discounts for veterans, deployed military personnel, and for grandparents living in the household of the homeowner (applicable to parents or grandparents of the homeowner of the residence). While it is important that you know and enjoy the tax benefits that you have on your home, it is also important to keep in mind that you need to fulfill your obligation to pay taxes on an annual basis on your property. If you already paid them during November or December, you were able to get a 4% and 3% discount respectively. If you have not yet paid your property taxes, you are still on time to get a 2% discount if you pay in January and a 1% discount if you pay in February. By March, you will have to pay your bill without any discount; nevertheless you must comply with this fiscal responsibility, and you can do it through the Miami Dade portal: https://miamidade.county-taxes.com/ public.

i durante el 2019 usted compró una casa este es el momento de empezar a disfrutar de los beneficios fiscales. La ley estatal permite a los propietarios de vivienda de la Florida reclamar una exención de hasta $50 mil dólares sobre su residencia principal. Esta exención es mayormente conocida por su denominación en inglés (Homestead Exemption) y en el caso de que usted sea dueño de una propiedad con anterioridad y no este disfrutando ya de este descuento tributario, también debe aprovechar para hacerlo, recuerde que esto puede significar un ahorro importante en su factura de impuestos a la propiedad que debe pagar anualmente entre los meses de noviembre y marzo. Tome en cuenta que, los primeros $25 mil dólares de esta exención se aplican a todas las autoridades fiscales, mientras que, los segundos $25 mil dólares excluyen los impuestos de la Junta Escolar y se exoneran a propiedades con valores evaluados superiores a $50 mil dólares. Si los cambios no son notificados, el propietario puede estar sujeto a 10 años de impuestos, más una penalización de 15% de interés anual y una multa del 50%. Por ejemplo, si renta su propiedad o parte de ella, debe informarlo y entender que perderá la totalidad o una porción de su Homestead Exempion sobre esa

propiedad. Otros cambios que debe informar y tramitar ante la Oficina del Tasador de Propiedades son, por mencionar algunos son: la exención de Granny Flat, el refinanciamiento, los cambios de título, las herencias, las sucesiones y las órdenes militares que deben ser renovadas. ow-interest rates, moderate inflation, and an increasingly strong job market, among others, there are many reasons to be optimistic about the housing market during 2020. This is stated by the Federal Mortgage Loan Corporation, better known as Freddie Mac. Freddie Mac is the company, backed by the U.S. government, authorized to grant and secure home loans in the country, which indicates that a sustained fall in mortgage rates and a significant recovery in the labor sector helped the housing market improve in the final months of 2019, a trend that continues at the start of the new year. Analysts explain that the economy remains strong, as in 2019, the record was set for the longest period of economic growth in U.S. history, positively impacting 2020, when strong labor gains, lowinterest rates, and lower financial market volatility should lead to the momentum of the housing sector. With regard to the unemployment rate, it is at its historic lows at 3.5%, and the labor market is expected to continue to advance along with the increase in jobs, which will help to support personal and family financial stability and thus to incentivize greater demand for homebuyers. Referring to mortgage rates, Freddie Mac points out that, since the first half of 2019, rates have dropped, marking the fourth-lowest annual average for the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in Freddie Mac’s weekly survey since 1971. They indicate that by 2020, it is expected to remain even lower, averaging around 3.8, predictions that seem to be quite close to reality as in the first poll this year, the rate stood at 3. 72%. The latest news reveals that the 30-year fixedrate mortgage averaged 3.72% for the week ending

January 2, 2020, slightly below the previous week when it was at 3.74%. A year ago, at the moment, this same rate stood at 4.51%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3. 16%, equally below the previous week, and less than one a year when it was set at 3.99%. Se maintained a similar scenario with the five-year adjustablerate hybrid mortgage (ARM) that averaged 3.46%, decreasing compared to the week and the previous year, when it was at 3.98%. Freddie Mac’s optimistic position is shared by an analysis by the Economic Analysis Program of the University of Florida’s (UF)Office of Economic and Trade Research (UF) which states that, at the end of 2019, economic indicators in our state have remained very favorable and the outlook for 2020 is encouraging as the market Florida continued to strengthen in the last months of last year. The UF study indicates that in November 2019, 217,400 jobs were added statewide compared to the previous year, an increase of 2.5%. Among all industries, education and health services got the most jobs, followed by leisure and hospitality and professional and commercial services. The unemployment rate reached its all-time low of 3. 1% in the penultimate month of last year. On the other hand, a mid-slowdown in luxury condo sales in Miami, some developers are choosing to build a new type of product: more affordable units that buyers can rent without restrictions and whenever they want. The projects are mainly grouped in downtown Miami and Brickell, with prices in the range of $300,000. All of these factors, and according to Freddie Mac’s forecast, the housing market will remain strong as home sales increase from 6.0 million in 2019 to 6.2 million in 2020 and 6.3 million in 2021. on bajas tasas de interés, una inflación moderada y un mercado laboral cada vez más sólido, hay muchas razones para ser optimistas sobre el mercado de la vivienda durante el 2020. Así lo asegura la Corporación Federal de Préstamos Hipotecarios, mejor conocida por su denominación en inglés, Freddie Mac. Freddie Mac es la empresa, respaldada por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos, autorizada para conceder y garantizar los préstamos hipotecarios en el país, la cual indica que una caída sostenida en las tasas hipotecarias y una recuperación significativa del sector de trabajo ayudaron al mercado inmobiliario a mejorar en los últimos meses del 2019, tendencia que continua a los inicios del nuevo año. Explican los analistas que la economía continúa firme, pues en el 2019 se estableció el récord del período más largo de crecimiento económico en la historia de los Estados Unidos, impactando positivamente al 2020, cuando las sólidas ganancias laborales, las bajas tasas de interés y la menor volatilidad del mercado financiero deberían conducir al impulso del sector inmobiliario. Con respecto a la tasa de desempleo, está ubicada en sus mínimos históricos en 3.5% y se esperar que el mercado laboral continúe avanzando junto con el aumento de empleos, lo que ayudará a respaldar la estabilidad financiera personal y familiar y por ende, a incentivar una mayor demanda de compradores de viviendas. Al referirse a las tasas hipotecarias, Freddie Mac señala que ya, desde el primer semestre del 2019, las tasas disminuyeron, marcando el cuarto promedio anual más bajo para la hipoteca de tasa fija a 30 años en la encuesta semanal que realiza Freddie Mac desde 1971. Indican que, para el 2020, se espera que se mantenga aun más bajo, promediando alrededor del 3.8, predicciones que parecen estar bastante cerca de

la realidad pues en el primer sondeo de este año, la tasa se ubicó en 3.72%. Las últimas noticias revelan que la hipoteca de tasa fija a 30 años promedió 3.72% para la semana que terminó el 02 de enero de 2020, ligeramente por debajo de la semana anterior cuando estuvo en 3.74%. Hace un año en este momento, esta misma tasa se ubicó en 4,51%. La hipoteca de tasa fija a 15 años promedió 3.16%, igualmente por debajo de la semana anterior y menos que hace un año, cuando se estableció en 3.99%. Se mantuvo similar escenario con la hipoteca híbrida de tasa ajustable (ARM) a cinco años que promedió 3.46%, disminuyendo en comparación con la semana y con el año anterior, cuando estuvo en 3.98%. Los economistas aseguran que los datos económicos más positivos y un mejor sentimiento en el mercado de la vivienda han traído estabilidad en las tasas hipotecarias. Es importante tomar en cuenta que Freddie Mac encuesta a los prestamistas en todo el país entre el lunes y el miércoles de cada semana para recopilar sus cifras de tasas hipotecarias. El promedio no incluye tarifas adicionales, conocidas como puntos, que la mayoría de los prestatarios deben pagar para obtener las tasas más bajas.

EN LA FLORIDA

La posición optimista de Freddie Mac es compartida por un análisis realizado por el Programa de Análisis Económico de la Oficina de Investigación Económica y Comercial de la Universidad de la Florida (UF, por sus siglas en inglés) el cual afirma que, al finalizar 2019, los indicadores económicos en nuestro estado se han mantenido muy favorables y las perspectivas para el 2020 son alentadoras a medida que el mercado laboral de Florida continuó fortaleciéndose en los últimos meses del año pasado. El estudio de la UF indica que, en noviembre del 2019, se agregaron 217 mil 400 empleos en todo el estado en comparación con el año anterior, lo que significó un aumento del 2.5%. Entre todas las industrias, los servicios de educación y salud obtuvieron la mayor cantidad de empleos, seguidos por el ocio y la hospitalidad y los servicios profesionales y comerciales. La tasa de desempleo alcanzó su mínimo histórico del 3.1% en el penúltimo mes del año pasado.

En Miami, en el marco inmobiliario se presentaron dos factores resaltantes en el 2019, los cuales impactaran el desarrollo del 2020: la aprobación federal de las regulaciones para las Zonas de Oportunidades y que una mayor cantidad de condominios ofrecieran la opción de rentas a corto plazo. Promulgado a fines del año pasado como parte de la revisión de impuestos federales, el programa de Zonas de Oportunidades ofrece incentivos fiscales a los desarrolladores que invierten en vecindarios económicamente deprimidos en todo Estados Unidos. En total, hay 8 mil 700 comunidades que han sido designadas como Zonas de Oportunidades y 67 de ellas se encuentran en el condado de Miami-Dade. En la ciudad de Nueva York hay 306 Zonas de Oportunidades, el condado de Los Ángeles tiene 274 y el condado de Cook de Chicago cuenta con 181. Creado por el senador republicano Tim Scott de Carolina del Sur y el senador demócrata Cory Booker de Nueva Jersey, el programa está destinado a estimular la inversión en lugares que el dinero institucional podría pasar por alto y este desarrollo ayudaría a las comunidades y las empresas. Si este es su caso, lo primero que hay que saber es que además de buscar un profesional competente que satisfaga sus demandas y necesidades, es vital que este cuente con una licencia válida y activa para tratarlo sin importar el campo en el que opere (médico o estético).

Aunque lo anterior puede parecer obvio para muchos, la realidad es que el Programa de Actividades sin Licencia (ULA por sus siglas en inglés) del Departamento de Salud de la Florida, a través de la Unidad de ‘Medical Quality Assurance’, recibe e investiga constantemente denuncias por este hecho.

Esta unidad se encarga de regular las licencias de los profesionales de la salud en la Florida, así como de investigar denuncias, estándares de cuidado, desviaciones y deficiencias de los profesionales autorizados. Esto quiere que usted como paciente no solo debe verificar que quien lo atienda cuente con una licencia sino también que lo haga de forma responsable y bajo los parámetros que exige la ley.

Como sabemos que se trata de un tema delicado, a continuación le contamos todo lo que necesita saber para detectar y reportar a un profesional no autorizado. Ejercer sin licencia se considera un delito grave de tercer grado que tiene como consecuencia, entre otras cosas, una multa de al menos $ 1,000 dólares y un año de encarcelamiento.

OBSERVE, ANALICE Y PREGUNTE

De acuerdo con el Departamento de Salud de la Florida, cuando se trata de determinar si un proveedor de servicios de atención en salud está operando sin una licencia válida y activa, hay que considerar varios aspectos. El primero de ellos es la forma en que el centro médico o estético y/o el profesional de la salud promocionan sus servicios. En este sentido, quienes no cuentan con una licencia, generalmente no hacen mucha publicidad de su negocio, exhiben carteles o letreros que por su apariencia parecen ser temporales, no tienen una página web ni publicidad en línea o publican anuncios en páginas web de dudosa reputación. Por eso, es común que estos lugares consigan a sus clientes o pacientes a través de referencias personales o lo que se conoce como el ‘voz a voz’. Por supuesto, esto no quiere decir que los profesionales de la salud autorizados no puedan darse a conocer de esta manera, pero estos generalmente combinan el ‘voz a voz’ con la utilización de otros medios de promoción más visibles y masivos. Con respecto a este punto, es preciso aclarar que un proveedor de servicios en salud está obligado a incluir el número de su licencia en cualquier pieza publicitaria que utilice para promocionar sus servicios.

Además de lo anterior, otro aspecto a considerar es el lugar en el que se ofrecen los servicios, así como las condiciones en que este se encuentre. Sospeche de un proveedor si opera en una vivienda o garaje o en cualquier otro establecimiento no convencional. También prenda sus alarmas si no hay a la vista suministros o equipos médicos o hay muy pocos; si observa que utilizan artículos domésticos comunes (por ejemplo de Home Depot, Lowes u otras ferreterías), si no hay licencias, diplomas, inspecciones o certificados sin expirar colgados en las paredes, y el personal es evasivo cuando se pregunta por ellos, y si el lugar se ve sucio y desordenado. Hay que aclarar que de acuerdo a los requerimientos del Departamento de Salud de la Florida, los proveedores de servicios de salud deben exhibir licencias de este estado y no de otros. Por otra parte, hay que considerar algunas prácticas que pueden indicar la ausencia de una licencia en nichos específicos del mercado de la salud. En el dental, por ejemplo, es una señal de alarma que los proveedores busquen personalmente a sus pacientes para darse a conocer o utilicen equipo dental portátil. En el caso de las farmacias, tenga cuidado si el establecimiento no cuenta con un farmacéutico licenciado dentro de su personal, recomendación que también aplica para los centros quirúrgicos que a veces son atendidos por asistentes quirúrgicos en lugar de médicos. En cuanto al sector de la medicina estética, de acuerdo con la Sociedad de Cirujanos Plásticos de Miami es conveniente hacerse varias preguntas antes de seleccionar al

Algunas de ellas son: ¿Está el profesional certificado por el American Board of Plastic Surgery?, ¿en qué hospital se realizan los procedimientos? y ¿tiene dicho hospital un teléfono en el que se pueda verificar la veracidad de lo que indica el proveedor de servicios? Según indica la organización, el valor de un médico certificado por la American Board of Plastic Surgery radica en que quien tiene tal certificación reúne estándares reconocidos a nivel nacional en cuanto a su educación, conocimiento, habilidades y experiencia. De esta manera, el profesional no solo cuenta con una licencia para operar sino que además tiene capacitación médica y de seguridad especializada, reconocimiento de sus pares y la experiencia necesaria para que el paciente reciba el mejor resultado posible de forma segura. En este campo es vital analizar el costo de los procedimientos, pues si parece ser demasiado bueno para ser verdad es porque probablemente lo es. Desconfíe de los procedimientos cuyos precios estén muy por debajo de los precios promedio del mercado. Otras señales de alarma que aplican en general a todos los servicios de atención en salud son: Aceptar únicamente efectivo para el pago de los tratamientos, no aceptar ningún tipo de seguro médico y tener personal que no se vista de forma profesional.

Recuerde verificar no solo la licencia de los centros de salud, sino de los individuos que prestan los servicios, pues muchas veces algunos lugares son legítimos y emplean a médicos con licencia, pero otros proveedores dentro del establecimiento no cuentan con licencia como, por ejemplo, aquellos que operan equipos radiográficos, Botox, tratamientos con láser o dispensan medicamentos. For this reason, during this season, many people are considering undergoing cosmetic procedures, taking blood tests, or visiting the doctor to get treatment for pain or discomfort they have been experiencing since last year. If this is your case, you should know that in addition to looking for a competent professional that meets your demands and needs, it is vital that you find a place or person with a valid and active license to treat you, regardless of the field of said place/individual (cosmetic or medical). Although this might sound obvious to many people, the reality is that the Unlicensed Activity and Fraud Program (ULA) of the Florida Department of Health, through the Medical Quality Assurance Unit, receives many complaints of unlicensed activity. This unit is responsible for regulating the licenses of healthcare professionals in Florida, as well as investigating complaints, standards of care, diversion, and impairment on licensed healthcare professionals. This means that you should not only verify that you are, in fact, taken care of by a licensed professional, but also that the treatment or procedure received is done so responsibly and under the parameters required by law. Since this is a sensitive issue, please read the information below that will help you understand how to identify and report an unauthorized professional. It is a third-degree felony to practice, attempt, or offer to practice a health profession without a license. There is a penalty of at least $1,000 fine and one-year incarceration, among other penalties, for those who fail to follow through.

WATCH, EVALUATE, AND ASK QUESTIONS

According to the Florida Department of Health,

when it comes to determining if a healthcare provider is operating without a valid and active license, several aspects have to be considered. The first one is the way in which the medical or cosmetic center and/or the health professional promotes its business. Unlicensed providers do little advertising; their signage looks like it’s temporary, they lack of a website or online advertising or use unsavory webpages to advertise. It is common for unlicensed providers to get their clients or patients by word of mouth or the ‘friend of a friend.’ This doesn’t mean that authorized healthcare professionals cannot make themselves known in this way, but they normally combine referrals with the use of other more visible and massive means of advertising. About this, it should be noted that a healthcare service provider is required to include its license number in any piece of advertising. In addition to the above, another thing to consider is the facility where the services are being offered, as well as the conditions. Unlicensed providers operate out of a home or garage or complete medical procedures in a non-conventional facility. Other red flags include medical supplies and/ or equipment missing or lacking, use of common household items (i.e. supplies from Home Depot, Lowes or other hardware stores), absence of unexpired licenses, degrees, inspections or certificates posted on the walls, and the staff is evasive when asked about them; and uncleaned and disorganized spaces. It should be clarified that according to the requirements of the Florida Department of Health, healthcare providers must hold and display licenses from Florida state and not from others. With regard to specific niches in the healthcare industry, there are also signs to be considered. Unlicensed providers in the dental one, for example, come to their patients or use portable dental equipment. Also, be aware of pharmacies that do not have a licensed pharmacist on staff or surgical centers that have surgical assistants in lieu of a Physician. As for the cosmetic plastic surgery industry, according to the Miami Society of Plastic Surgeons, it is recommended to ask several questions before

selecting the right professional. Some of them are: Is the professional Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery? In which hospital are the procedures performed? And does the hospital have a telephone number where you can verify the accuracy of what the service provider indicates? According to the organization, the value of a physician plastic surgeon Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery lies in the fact that the professional meets nationally recognized standards for education, knowledge, skills, and experience. In this way, the professional not only has a license to operate but also has specialized medical and safety training, peer recognition, and the experience necessary to guarantee the best outcome in plastic surgery. In this line, costs should also be highly analyzed. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. It’s suspicious to be charged with amounts well below the average market prices. Other alarm signals that apply to all healthcare providers are: Accepting only cash for the payment of treatments and procedures, not accepting any type of medical insurance, and having office staff dressed unprofessionally. If you suspect that a specific healthcare provider (individual or business) doesn’t hold a real, active, and valid license, the first step is to verify whether or not your suspicion is correct through the Florida Department of Health’s website in the ‘Licensing & Regulation’ section. Remember to verify not only the business license’s but that of the individuals who provide the services as often times businesses are legitimate and hire licensed doctors, but other providers within the facility are unlicensed such as those who operate equipment, Botox, laser treatments or dispense medications. igh School Juniors just took the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in October and they should now take the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) in March! Juniors should take the SAT in May, June, and August if needed. When testing is completed, they need to focus on college applications. Wait, what? You thought the SAT was for Senior year? Sure, you could do thatbut you are going to have one chaotic Senior year. The math questions on the SAT is mostly high school math topics up through Algebra II. Algebra II is typically taken in grade 11. Therefore, by March of your Junior year you will have completed at least 7 months of Algebra II. With the material still fresh in your mind, you are ready to give the SAT a try. Granted, very few students reach their goal score on the first try. Usually by the second or third attempt, students hit their highest scores and obtain the scores needed for college entry and/or scholarship qualification. A high school junior who takes the SAT in March has a second opportunity in May and a third SAT opportunity in June. Before first or second SAT attempt, the student should know the SAT score needed to be accepted at their colleges of choice. Students should also keep in mind that to qualify for the Bright Futures Scholarship at 100% tuition, the minimum score is 1330 or 1210 for the 75% tuition rate (in addition to GPA and volunteer hour requirements). If the student still doesn’t hit their goal score by the third attempt in June, try a fourth time (after appropriate studying) in August. The August test date allows for studying and preparation over the summer without too much academic overload since school has just started. If you must take it in the following months after the August test date- so

be it. But, keep a few things in mind. The Common Application opens August 1st. As soon as it opens, you should start working on your college applications and required essays. The applications open before you start your senior year of high school. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on October 1st. And then you have your college application deadlines. This year the University of Florida and Florida State University required college applications be in by November 1st. I had several students with November 15th deadlines for other colleges too. If you decide to apply Early Decision or Early Application- that’s a December deadline. However, if you want to impress colleges- have all applications in weeks before their deadline. If you want to be considered for a college’s Honors Program or special scholarships, you will be asked to submit applications early. If you plan to

apply for private scholarships, that’s more essays and applications on top of the college ones. Imagine trying to fit into that schedule several rounds of SAT test taking and studying while also enjoying the benefits of being a senior in high school such as Homecoming in September or October. Basically, you are cramming everything you need to do for college between August – December. Do yourself a favor and get the SAT out of the way before you start your Senior year. One more thing to remember. You can take the SAT between March – August in order to earn the score you need to be accepted at your college of choice. However, if you need to keep taking the SAT in order to qualify for Bright Futures or other scholarships- you can still do that. Bright Futures allows you to submit SAT scores up until almost the end of your senior year.

Cyber Security starts with YOUR EMPLOYEES Action items to help protect your business.

hen identity thieves trick employees, businesses pay a steep price. Consider the case of the Oregon Department of Human Resources. In January 2019, the personal information of over 645,000 applicants was exposed to hackers. Why? Nine employees were conned into clicking on phishing emails. The results can be catastrophic. Workers spend months cleaning up the mess. Companies can face penalties, fines, and lawsuits. Customers and business partners lose confidence in your company’s ability to manage data. A company’s brand and reputation take a hit, creating a perfect storm for competitors to take full advantage of your problem. Don’t become a statistic. Train your employees to be vigilant about the following identity theft schemes.

• PHISHING EMAILS. Consider this example: An employee receives an email or text message purporting to come from company management or a trusted vendor. He or she is duped into opening the message and clicking on a malicious link. When the victim lands on a bogus page requesting both new and existing passwords, the attacker hijacks the original password to gain access to the network. Action items. Beat this problem by training employees to recognize phishing schemes. Look for subtle mistakes such as spelling errors or domain name anomalies. Teach employees to hover their mouse over links to ensure they are legitimate. Above all, staff should routinely ask, “Why am I receiving this email?” A simple verification may be all that’s needed to stop a phishing attempt. • RANSOMWARE. Ransomware is malicious software that infects a computer, locks it and then demands a ransom. In effect, the system’s critical data is held hostage until fees are paid.

Like phishing, ransomware relies on victims to download pernicious software. Action items. Train employees to confirm that senders are, in fact, trusted contacts. Teach them to avoid clicking on links from questionable sources. They should be particularly skeptical if an attachment asks them to enable macros, which is a common way ransomware is spread. Your best defense to ransomware is active, secure backups of all systems.

After all, if a worker receives an email from a wellknown vendor who asks about his recent trip to Florida, the message must be legitimate. Right? Not necessarily. Action items. Train employees to protect both themselves (and your business) when connecting or sharing on social media. Create a policy that limits social media use during the work day and prohibits access to personal accounts using company computers or networks. • INTERNET ACCESS. With the increase of telecommuting, data security risks continue to grow. Workers who access company networks from coffee shops, airports, or other unsecured access points may allow identity thieves to exploit vulnerabilities. In addition, with the expense of cellphone data, employees will be tempted to use your company wi-fi for personal use. Action items. Limit personal access to your company wi-fi. Explore creating a separate access for employee use during the day. Develop VPN protocols for remote workers, as this limits access to your network. Require strong password, encryption, time-out locking and theft protocols within written policies. Prohibit access to your network using public wi-fi. Hire or create an accountable person to constantly monitor company security. Company security is now a complex but critical success factor for all small businesses. Take it seriously by hiring experts and constantly training your employees to be vigilant.

Este evento está dirigido a todas las edades y contará con vendedores de comidas y bebidas, y ofrecerá degustaciones y actividades para niños, así como actividades de arte y presentaciones culturales por parte de las Ciudades Hermanas de Doral y de la comunidad local. Criados en el pequeño pueblo de El Clavo en la región de Barlovento, los Parranda El Clavo son un grupo de amigos que hacen música juntos durante hace más de 30 años. El público del sur de Florida descubrió este electrizante grupo el año pasado durante su residencia de un mes en el Teatro Colony en Miami Beach. Trabajando con Miami New Drama, desarrollaron el musical Viva La Parranda, con el fin de compartir las historias del grupo y su pueblo. Al describir su presentación en NPR Tiny Desk Concert 2018, un periodista escribió: “Ver a Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo es como mirar atrás en el tiempo. Los grandes cilindros de bambú, los tambores en forma de djembe y el gran tambor de fricción, todos juntos y en armonía, crean una sinfonía de polirritmos entrelazados que son de un tono diferente a todo lo que había escuchado. f you’re changing your name, it’s important to let Social Security know so we can update the information we maintain, send you an updated Social Security card, and ultimately ensure we pay you accurate benefits when you retire or if you become disabled. To change your name in our records, you must provide Social Security with documents proving your legal name change and identity. If you are a U.S. citizen, you also must provide our agency with documentation proving your U.S. citizenship. You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We can’t accept photocopies or notarized copies. To prove your legal name change, you must show one of the following documents: • Marriage document • Divorce decree • Certificate of naturalization showing a new name • Court order for a name change To prove your identity, you must show an unexpired document showing your name, identifying information, and photograph, such as one of the following: • U.S. driver’s license
