uring what can be considered the start of the 2017 Fiscal Year, Council Members, the City Manager, Directors and Chiefs of Departments met to work on a Strategic Planning Meeting in which the main objective was to determine the goals for next year. Edward A. Rojas, Manager of the City explained this, he said that the most important goal of this meeting was to establish the priorities for the creation of the next budget, starting from a general view of our community and taking into consideration the requirements of the residents and the immediate necessities of Doral, given that this is a city in full expansion. “During the months that have gone by this year”, states Edward Rojas, “the residents have been expressing their opinions, concerns and wishes around the city, also their expectations regarding the work of the elected officials, therefore our starting point are these requirements, attending to the necessities and planning for 2017”. For Rojas, this relationship between the residents and the authorities is the one that allows a general view of the community and allows the creation of these planning meetings. These have been conducted since the city was founded with the purpose of understanding and attending the necessities of the city. “These type of working days allow the members of Council and the rest of the Directors of the City to focus in their basic functions and then integrate them into common goals and objectives, all of them pointing to the decision making process that allows to bring solution to the existing problems, improve the quality of life of our residents and implement the necessary strategies to drive us to a planned and integral development of Doral”, indicated Rojas.

Taking into consideration that the main complaint from the majority of the residents and those who work in the City of Doral is traffic, an important part of this work day was dedicated to the search of alternatives to this problem, among these the attendees decided to continue with the implementation of video cameras that allow to capture 100% of the tags of the vehicles that come in and out of Doral. “This information will allow us to work together with Miami Dade County and with agencies specialized in the design and implementation of transportation projects that will allow us to develop feasible solutions, that are quick and effective, which is what our residents require”, stated the City Manager. The optimization of the maintenance plans of Doral was another of the important subjects of this intensive working day, also the operation funds to maximize the

CONCLUSIONS

The general conclusion of this interesting working day that took place at City Hall, was to continue to work on the strategic objectives that are in place, as all the Directors of the City of Doral coincide in the importance to continue to focus their efforts in areas such as: transportation and traffic, communication, smart city growth, financial stability in the long run, sustainability, organizational efficiency, housing, workforce development and territorial expansion.

life cycle of the assets of our community, such as parks, means of communication and all the equipment used for the operation and proper function of the city, are some of these examples. “It is as important to get the resources and the construction of infrastructure for the quality of life of our residents as it is the conservation and maintenance of them”, added Rojas. One of the distinctive things that has always characterized Doral has been the physical aspect of the City, for this reason the beautification of the public and common areas, the medians in streets and highways, and walking paths was also considered a priority, as we need to keep the aesthetics of our city, providing for enjoyable spaces for both residents and visitors of our city. After this strategic planning meeting, now it is the turn of each Director and Chief of Department to work individually establishing their own budgets, making sure to get the required funds to work efficiently and integrally in the priorities that were established during the joint working day. Soon, the Directors of the City of Doral will present their budgets and approaches to the City Manager Edward Rojas who will then be in charge of verifying that these are in line with the objectives of the City Council, after this the workshops for the preparation of the budget for the Fiscal Year 2017 will start, it is estimated that they will take place as soon as August of this year, then the Budget will go to the City Council for final approval.

n lo que podría ser considerado el inicio del año fiscal 2017, miembros del Concejo Municipal de Doral, el administrador de la ciudad, directivos y jefes de departamentos sostuvieron una reunión de planificación estratégica cuyo objetivo principal fue trazar las metas a seguir durante el venidero año. Así lo explicó el administrador de la ciudad, Edward A. Rojas, quien señaló que el aspecto más importante de esta reunión fue establecer las prioridades para la elaboración del próximo presupuesto, partiendo de una visión general de nuestra comunidad, tomando en cuenta los requerimientos de los ciudadanos y las necesidades más inmediatas de Doral, como ciudad en plena expansión. “Durante los meses transcurridos de este año”, indica Edward Rojas, “los residentes han estado expresando sus opiniones, preocupaciones y anhelos en torno a la ciudad en que viven, así como sus expectativas con respecto a la labor de los funcionarios elegidos, por lo que, partiendo de estos requerimientos se inició este encuentro de atención de necesidades y planificación para el 2017”. Para el administrador Rojas, esta relación entre los residentes y las autoridades municipales es la que permite obtener una visión general de la comunidad y dar pie a las reuniones de planificación que se han llevado a cabo en Doral desde su fundación con la intención de comprender y atender las necesidades de la ciudad como, hasta ahora, ha sucedido. “Este tipo de jornadas de trabajo permite a los miembros del Concejo Municipal y demás directivos de la ciudad centrarse en sus funciones básicas e integrarlos a objetivos y metas comunes, todas ellas canalizadas a tomar decisiones que permitan brindar soluciones a los problemas existentes, mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestros residentes e implementar las estrategias necesarias para el desarrollo planificado e integral de Doral”, indicó Rojas. CONCLUSIONES Seguir trabajando sobre los objetivos estratégicos ya existentes, fue la conclusión general de este interesante encuentro de trabajo realizado en el Ayuntamiento

de la Ciudad de Doral, pues todos los gerentes doralinos coincidieron en la importancia de continuar enfocando sus esfuerzos en áreas como: tráfico y transporte, comunicación, crecimiento inteligente de la ciudad (smart city), disponibilidad financiera a largo plazo, sostenibilidad, eficiencia organizativa, vivienda, desarrollo laboral y expansión territorial. Tomando en cuenta que el tráfico es la principal queja de la mayor parte de los residentes y de quienes trabajan en Doral, una importante parte de este encuentro estratégico estuvo dedicada a buscar alternativas a este problema, entre las que destacaron continuar con la implementación de cámaras de video que permitan captar las matrículas o chapas del 100% de los vehículos que entran y salen del territorio doralino. “Esta información nos sirve para trabajar en conjunto con el condado de Miami-Dade y con agencias especializadas en el diseño e implementación de proyectos de transporte que nos permita desarrollar soluciones viables alcanzables, prontas y efectivas que es lo que requieren nuestros ciudadanos”, manifestó el administrador de la ciudad. Optimizar los planes de mantenimiento de Doral fue otro de los temas principales de este intensivo taller de trabajo, así como los fondos de operación necesarios para maximizar el ciclo de vida de los activos de nuestra comunidad como parques, vías de comunicación y los equipos utilizados para la operatividad y funcionamiento de la ciudad, por ejemplo. “Es tan importante la adquisición de recursos y la construcción de la infraestructura para el buen vivir de nuestros residentes, como la conservación y

cuidado de los mismos”, agregó Rojas. Uno de los aspectos que siempre ha caracterizado a Doral ha sido el aspecto físico de la ciudad, por lo que el embellecimiento de las áreas públicas, zonas comunes, divisiones de las vías de comunicación y carreteras, así como de los paseos peatonales también fue considerada una prioridad a manera de preservar la estética de nuestra localidad, brindando agradables espacios a residentes y visitantes de la ciudad. Tras esta reunión de planificación estratégica, se da inicio al trabajo individual de los directores y jefes de cada departamento, quienes se encargaran de desarrollar sus respectivos presupuestos, estableciendo los fondos requeridos para atender eficiente e integralmente las prioridades consideradas durante esta jornada conjunta. Seguidamente, los directivos de la ciudad de Doral presentaran sus presupuestos y planteamientos al administrador Edward Rojas quien será el encargado de verificar que los mismos estén alineados con los objetivos del Concejo Municipal, posteriormente, comenzarán los talleres de trabajo para la preparación del presupuesto de la ciudad para el año fiscal 2017, los cuales se estima que sean iniciados en agosto de este año, para luego pasar al Ayuntamiento (Concejo) para su aprobación definitiva.

Annexation process kicked off. Zoning Landscape and Workshops Ordinances deferred By Maria Alejandra Pulgar

n the month of April, the regular Council Meeting Sessions along with the Local Planning Agency and Zoning Meetings, accounted for almost ten hours total of discussions, presentations and reviews for City of Doral elected officials. The closing of the Week of the Young Child was the perfect occasion for young students from Doral Preschools that participated in the program to showcase their talents, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and later playing the National Anthem on the violin. That presentation allowed for a full house crowd at least for the first half hour of the afternoon session of the regular council. It was not the case for the Zoning meeting where, by the time the agenda reached the items regarding readings for ordinances, there was no public in the chamber, except for two very involved residents who always attend the meetings. Public interest and participation continues to be an issue. Items after items are discussed, approved, denied or deferred, and when public comments opportunities are opened and very few residents, almost always the same faces, are the ones who take the time to show up to express concerns or to voice their opinions to the council. One can only hope there are many more people watching the meetings over the internet or on TV, and some more take the time to write to Councilmembers with their questions, suggestions and concerns. There are many important and interesting matters being discussed at City Hall. And all of them eventually will impact, for better or for worse, the quality of life of the residents of Doral. It is urgent that new faces attend the meetings and get involved. It will help the Council receive true input from their constituents to better serve all residents and business owners in Doral.

ANNEXATION PROCESS INITIATED

The expected increase on the tax base due to the annexation of new areas to the City of Doral, were the main reason for Mayor Luigi Boria to request the reduction of the mileage rate to 1.90 for 2016. Therefore the approval of the resolutions to continue the process with the Board of County Commissioners is one of the most important decisions made by the Council this month. Three sections of unincorporated Miami Dade County are requested for incorporation to the City of Doral, after extensive reviews and meetings with the authorities from the Town of Medley, Virginia Gardens and Miami Springs. Once approved at County level, the new areas will increase the size of Doral by approximately 2.28 Square Miles to the north and generate tax profit for the city. The requested areas for annexation are:

• Section 6: located between NW 90th and NW 106th streets, and 107th and 117th avenues. It is mainly a commercial area, expected to generate a net tax profit of around $400,000. • Section 15: located between the Palmetto expressway and NW 87th avenue, and NW 58th and NW 61st streets, as it has been agreed with Medley. It is a mixed used area, between industrial and commercial, and is expected to generate a net tax profit near to $182.000 • Section 16: located between NW 87th and NW 97th Avenue, and between NW 58th and NW 74th street. It is a space where all county facilities are located. According to the Staff report that supports the resolution, it is not expected that this incorporation generate profit but to be considered land buffering for future recreational facilities. “It has been a long process and I am happy it is almost getting to a conclusion” said Mayor Boria upon approval of the resolutions. All these resolutions for annexation are consistent with the goals, objectives and policies (GOPs) of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The next steps in the process are to submit the approved resolutions to the Board of County Commissioners, for them to authorize the annexation of the land.

LANDSCAPES AND WORKSHOP ORDINANCES DEFERRED

These ordinances were basically the main issues to be discussed on the recent April Zoning meeting and drew the attention of a group of residents who were present in the chamber. However, they were deferred to May 11th by the City Attorney, as the decisions require a full board vote and on the April zoning meeting there were only three council members present. Ordinance #2016-06, presented the first time in February, includes the modifications to the land development code of ordinances to include regulations to the type of landscape that surrounds golf courses. The development of the ordinance was a consequence

of the many complaints by the residents of Doral Park that were affected by the decision of the Trump Resort of planting palms and other bushes and trees around their golf courses. This will be its First Public Reading. Ordinance #2016-16 on Zoning Workshops is the product of a request by a committee of residents, who submitted the text for review by the City Attorney, as it was reported by Doral Family Journal in the month of February. Once incorporated into the code, the ordinance will make mandatory the realization of workshops before submitting projects to council that require rezoning. The Attorney reviewed the ordinance and presented it on first reading during the April Council meeting, having it unanimously approved. The second reading was deferred to next council meeting on May 11th. Residents input and participation during public comments will be very important to support the passing of this ordinance.

ás de diez horas de discusión sumaron entre la sesión regular, la agencia local de planificación y la reunión de zonificación del Concejo Municipal de Doral en el mes de abril. Como era el cierre de la Semana del Niño un nutrido grupo de estudiantes de los preescolares de Doral que participaron en el programa mostraron sus talentos en la reunión del Concejo, recitando el juramento a la bandera y tocando en violín el himno nacional. La presencia de los niños hizo que la cámara estuviera a casa llena, al menos la primera media hora de la sesión regular. No fue así el día de la reunión de zonificación donde, para el momento en que solamente quedaban en agenda las ordenanzas, no había público en la cámara a excepción de dos ciudadanos que siempre están presentes en todas las reuniones. Durante el espacio de comentarios del público no hubo solicitudes de derecho de palabra. Sigue siendo una preocupación la poca participación e interés del público en los asuntos municipales. Puntos de agenda van y vienen, son aprobados, negados o diferidos y al momento de comentarios del público son muy pocos quienes se toman el tiempo de llegarse a la Alcaldía para expresar sus opiniones frente al Concejo. Solo resta esperar que haya más gente viendo la reunión por televisión o a través del internet y que muchos más quienes escriban o llamen a los concejales para hacerles saber sus preguntas, preocupaciones y sugerencias. Muchos asuntos importantes se discuten en el Ayuntamiento. Y todo lo que allí sucede eventualmente impactará la vida de los residentes de Doral. Urge el compromiso ciudadanos de caras nuevas para asistir a las reuniones e involucrarse. Eso ayudará al Concejo a tener claro el panorama de necesidades de la comunidad para continuar sirviéndola adecuadamente.

De acuerdo al reporte que acompaña la resolución, no se espera que la incorporación de esta área genere profit alguno, sino que es considerado reserva de terreno para futuras facilidades recreacionales para la ciudad. “Ha sido un largo proceso y me complace ver que nos acercamos a la conclusión” dio el Alcalde Boria después de haber votado para aprobar la resolución. Todas estas resoluciones para ampliación son consistentes con las metas, objetivos y políticas (GOPs) del Plan Maestro Ampliado adoptado en la ciudad. Los próximos pasos serán someter las resoluciones para aprobación a la Comisión de Miami-Dade, para que entonces sea autorizada la incorporación de esas secciones a la ciudad de Doral.

INICIADO EL PROCESO DE AMPLIACIÓN MUNICIPAL

DIFERIDAS ORDENANZAS DE JARDINES Y DE TALLERES DE ZONIFICACIÓN

El aumento de la base imponible como consecuencia de la ampliación de la Ciudad, fue la razón que esgrimió el Alcalde Luigi Boria cuando solicitó la reducción de la tasa de amillaramiento a 1.90 para 2016. Por lo tanto, la aprobación de las resoluciones relacionadas es fundamental para que el proceso pueda continuar hasta la Junta de Comisionados de Miami-Dade. Doral solicitó incorporar tres zonas, después de reuniones exhaustivas de revisión junto con las autoridades de los vecinos Medley, Virginia Gardens y Miami Springs. Una vez aprobadas las resoluciones, pasan a discusión a nivel del Condado y al aprobarse, las nuevas áreas agregaran aproximadamente 2.28 millas adicionales a la ciudad. • Sección 6: ubicada entre las calles NW 90th y NW

Estas ordenanzas eran el plato fuerte de la discusión durante la reunión de zonificación de abril y por ellas asistieron a la cámara un grupo de residentes interesados en participar y comentar. Sin embargo, la discusión fue diferida por el Abogado Municipal para el 11 de Mayo, pues las decisiones requieren voto general de todos los Concejales y en esta oportunidad solo estaban presentes 2 concejales y el alcalde. La Ordenanza #2016-06, presentada por primera vez en Febrero, incluye la modificación del código de ordenanzas para normar el desarrollo de paisajismo alrededor de los campos de golf. Su desarrollo fue consecuencia de múltiples reclamos de los residentes

de Doral Park que se vieron afectados por el paisajismo elegido por la organización Trump para separar el campo de golf de sus propiedades Esta será la primera discusión. Ordenanza #2016-16: solicita la ejecución obligatoria de talleres públicos sobre proyectos que soliciten cambios de zonificación. Es producto del requerimiento de un comité de residentes, quienes sometieron el texto a revisión por el Abogado Municipal, tal como anunciara Doral Family Journal en el mes de Febrero. La inclusión de esta ordenanza en el código permitirá a quienes no conocen los proyectos, hacer todas las preguntas y observaciones antes que se autorice un cambio de zonificación. El Abogado revisó la ordenanza y la presentó en primera discusión en la reunión regular municipal de Abril, y el concejo en pleno voto para aprobarla. Se difirió la segunda discusión para la reunión municipal del 11 de Mayo. Será fundamental para su aprobación e inclusión definitiva en el código de ordenanzas que haya una presencia importante de residentes interesados que apoyen la moción y expresen su opinión ese día durante la porción de comentarios públicos.

The battle to become Mayor of Doral has started

The first time that Juan Carlos Bermudez conducted the destiny of Doral, there were only 22 thousand residents. Today, it is estimated that 54 thousand people reside in Doral, this makes it evident that this city has higher government requirements every day

Maybe this is the phrase that best describes the actual electoral battle for the Mayoral position, Luigi Boria expects to be re-elected while Juan Carlos Bermudez expects to return to the position that he hold from 2003 until 2012. Doral’s Council is composed by four Council Member positions and one Mayor, each one of them is elected by direct voting by the residents of Doral. For these coming elections, on November 8th, 2016 the open seats are: 1, 3 and the Mayor’s Seat. For the Mayoral Seat, the candidates that have presented their candidacy until now are the current Mayor Luigi Boria, who trusts he will be re-elected and Juan Carlos Bermudez, who was the first Mayor of the City of Doral and who assures that he will rescue Doral and bring it back to what is was, based on his previous experience.

WILL JUAN CARLOS RETURN?

Juan Carlos Bermudez, who will be remembered by history as the first Mayor of Doral and whose double term lasted for nine years, wishes to come back to the position that he hold until 2012.

Juan Carlos Bermudez Bermudez is a 54 years old attorney from Cuban origin. By the time he governed Doral, the city was an important warehouse area, with easy access to Miami International Airport, attracting a large number of immigrants. According to a 2009 CNN report,

Doral became one of the best 100 cities in the country to live in and set a business. Rapidly, through the following years the population of the city grew from 22 thousand to over 54 thousand inhabitants today. In the message to announce his candidacy, Bermudez indicated to the readers that together they had created a city and a community recognized by its transparency, growth and responsible quality of life. He added that the city was recognized as one of the best places to live and work in the United States at International, National and Regional levels, reason for which he was proud to be a resident and Mayor of Doral. However, Bermudez stated in his message, that the last three years and a half he has felt disappointed to see the changes in Doral, for this reason he said: “After hearing from many of you and speaking to my wife and children, I have decided to run for Mayor of Doral this upcoming November. We will face a daunting task but with your help we can return to having a city where the residents and its government work hand in hand to make our community the best possible place to live, work, play and learn. Let’s get back to having an open and transparent government, responsible and controlled growth and a focus on creating a great quality of life”. During his administration, Bermudez implemented new green spaces with sport areas and community centers, such as the Veterans Park and the Trails and Tails Park, he also opened the first Doral Police Department and built the actual City Hall. WILL LUIGI STAY? He first directed the Business Men and Women Board in the area in which his company was located, then presided the Board of Directors of his HOA, finally he submitted his candidacy to Council Member, position that he occupied from 2010 until November 2012, when he was elected Mayor of Doral. Luigi Boria won with 2 thousand 572 votes, which represented 54.58% of the total registered voters. Now, he is asking to be re-elected in order to be able to provide continuity to the projects initiated during his first term. He assures that in Doral there is still too much to do to improve the quality of life of the residents and that he can make it happen.

Luigi Boria Among his achievements, Boria highlights the construction of a respectable building for the Police Department, the commercial, industrial and residential growth of the city, road improvements, the planning of new parks and the correct administration of the finances, having allowed the city to achieve ample reserves and four times the reduction of the property taxes, achieving with this that Doral can enjoy today one of the lower property taxes in Miami Dade County. Boria assures that his government has been opened to the opinion of the residents and that areas such as health, sports and the attention to the traffic problems have had an important place, always in the path to continue boosting the economic development and the territorial expansion. In regards to the candidacies for Seat 1of the Council, position currently hold by Council Woman Sandra Ruiz, who at this time has not yet announced if she will look for her re-election or if she will look for the Mayoral Seat, the registered candidates are Claudia Mariaca and the Venezuelans Carlos Pereira and Jackelin Guiza. On Seat 3 Vice Mayor Christi Fraga occupies the position, and although she has not made a formal announcement, she looks as if she is ready to compete for her re-election, as of today she has only one opponent, CPA David Hernandez from Cuban descent.

He is such a sweet and well behaved baby and his parents Gabriel and Christi Fraga are enjoying every single moment of this new phase in their lives. To celebrate her first Mothers’ Day, Christi shared with the readers of Doral Family Journal her first experiences with motherhood. “The priorities have changed, definitely. Since he was born I see things in a different light. It is an adjustment, especially when you are so busy, a lot of things going on with the business and the city, but it has been great, I am very happy, it is a blessing to have him” said Christi, who has managed her busy schedule as businesswoman and Vice Mayor for the City of Doral to fulfil her duties as a new mom. “My family has been very supportive and my husband too. If it wasn’t that way I could not be able to continue running my business and serving the city. He is such a good baby, he already sleeps the night and he behaves really well.” “I think I have fallen into the role of mommy pretty well now.” Christi credits a big part of the good experience she has had these few months with her baby to her positive attitude towards motherhood and the responsibilities it entails: “I think it plays a huge part. I have seen many women go through post-partum depression and it influences how their babies behave. There is so much pressure nowadays on moms for doing things in a certain way and it stresses them up trying to be perfect. You try to be the best as you can, but you can’t always be nor do what other people do. It all comes to trusting yourself, trusting your instincts, trusting your body and doing everything so that you are happy and your baby is happy.”

And many other mothers that have to leave their little babies under other people’s care to go back to work. About those moms Christi said that: “I give a round of applause to all the moms that don’t have the flexibility to stay home with their kids, it is a huge sacrifice. I take my hats off to them. I couldn’t imagine not being there for his first giggle, his first smile, and when you go back to work you miss some of those milestones. I am thankful I get to be there for many of those moments, working from home or taking him with me. I have even taken him to the city.” “Definitely when you have your own business is easier, but those many incredible mothers that go back to work full time they manage. I know it is hard to balance work life and parenting and everything, but we women find the strength to do it. I know I am very lucky I get to spend a lot of time with him for having my business.”

As parents, Gabriel and Christi Fraga want their child to be as family-oriented as they are; that he learns to respect his elders; that he is kind and thankful for the blessings he has received; that he is grateful and independent, that he learns to speak another language and that he is socially responsible. That gives me such a bigger drive to want to do more things for the city and it is amazing how my perspective has changed. It has always been a priority to get things done, but now I understand more their sense of urgency and It is such a blessing that he will be able to enjoy many of the things that we are working for as a team.” “These past three months I have learned to be more patient and I have learned what unconditional love is since the moment he was born. For your child, you would give your life. Now that somebody depends on me, I definitely understand unconditional love and patience.” “To new moms my best message could be: It gets better, they eventually get to sleep and you get to rest. That first real smile when they look at you that is the best feeling in the world. And for all other moms: we are real superheroes in

disguise. No matter what you do there is always a superhero in us. Moms, we are special people, women in general are special, but when you become a mom you kind of grow a little cape and I think that we have to enjoy ourselves being moms. Cut yourself some slack, give yourself a break, you are doing a great job and know that no matter what, the unconditional love you feel for your child your child will feel for you.”

l precioso Gabriel Alexander duerme plácidamente mientras su mamá no para de mirarlo amorosamente. Es un bebé muy dulce y bien portado y sus padres Gabriel y Christi Fraga lo están disfrutando minuto a minuto. Para celebrar su primer Día de las Madres, Christi compartió con los lectores de Doral Family Journal su experiencia como mamá primeriza. “Definitivamente las prioridades cambian. Desde que nació veo el mundo de otra manera. Hay que ajustarse, con tantas ocupaciones entre el negocio y la ciudad. Pero hasta ahora ser su mamá ha sido excelente, soy muy feliz porque es una bendición tenerlo” dijo Christi, quien ha compaginado sus tareas como empresaria y Vice Alcaldesa de la Ciudad de Doral junto con sus actividades como madre. “Mi esposo y mi familia me apoyan mucho. No podría hacer nada sin ellos. No podría seguir con mi negocio y además mi posición en el Concejo. Gabriel Alexander es un bebé excelente, duerme la noche entera y se porta realmente muy bien.” “Creo que me sienta bien el rol de madre.” Christi acredita su experiencia positiva a su actitud hacia la maternidad y sus responsabilidades: “Creo que la actitud tiene mucho que ver. He visto mujeres pasar por una depresión post-parto y eso influencia el comportamiento del bebé. Hay mucha presión social para que las madres hagan cosas de cierta manera y eso angustia mucho, tratando de ser perfectas, cuando realmente lo importante es ser ellas mismas, creer en sus instintos y sentirse felices, para que su bebé también este feliz.”

“CONFÍA EN TU INSTINTO MATERNAL”

Christi recibió innumerables consejos sobre cómo adaptarse a su nueva vida, pero uno en especial le ha parecido muy importante: “deja de estar leyendo consejos y confía en tu instinto maternal. Está bien buscar información, pero siempre confiar en ti misma, pues Dios te dará las herramientas, la fuerza y la habilidad para ser una buena mamá.” Su fe y el apoyo de su esposo, familiares y

amigos, la han ayudado a que pueda seguir ese consejo y además superar los miedos naturales que tienen toda mamá primeriza: “a veces te desesperas al principio porque no entiendes a tu bebé, pero es un proceso de aprendizaje que es mejor dejar en las manos de Dios. Mucha gente te dice que tengas cuidado con la depresión post parto, etc. Y por otra parte hay tanta información disponible que leerla asusta. Afortunadamente no he tenido ningún problema y hemos estado muy felices desde que nació.” Sin embargo, ella ha visto muchas madres pasar por la depresión a causa de las presiones sociales para ser las madres, esposas, amas de casa, empleadas o empresarias perfectas. Y muchas de ellas tienen que dejar a sus hijitos de pocas semanas en centros de cuidado para poder regresar al trabajo. Para Christi esas madres “merecen un aplauso. Me quito el sombrero frente a esas madres que no tienen la flexibilidad para poder quedarse en casa con sus hijos. Es un sacrificio muy fuerte. No me podría imaginar no estar allí cuando sonrió la primera vez o para escuchar su primera risa o muchos otros eventos de su vida que esas madres trabajadoras no pueden presenciar. Doy gracias a Dios por poder

Con su ocupada agenda, los Fraga están trabajando para que el bebé se ajuste a una rutina que les permita seguir siendo activos y cultivando su relación como esposos. “No podemos perder nuestras costumbres. Creo firmemente que el bebé vino a nuestro mundo, no que debemos adaptarnos nosotros al suyo. Quiero que aprenda a comportarse fuera de la casa, que se acostumbre a los ruidos. No quiero mantenerlo encerrado en casa. Un excelente consejo que me dieron fue no perder lo que teníamos: mi relación con mi esposo y mi vida como empresaria y servidora pública, que si es posible compaginar todo y evolucionar para ser una mamá activa. Y que el bebé siempre tiene prioridad, como debe ser en la familia.” “Muchas parejas olvidan su relación con su cónyuge cuando llegan los hijos. Aun cuando los hijos sean lo más importante, siempre hay que cuidar el matrimonio primero, para beneficio de los hijos.” Haber esperado para comenzar una familia ayudó a los Fraga a fortalecer su matrimonio y el bebé ha llegado en un momento oportuno. “Tenemos muchas experiencias de vida, tenemos paciencia. Me alegra haber esperado, porque nos ayudó no solo a consolidarnos como matrimonio sino también crear nuestro negocio y cumplir una de mis metas de vida: servir a mi comunidad. Hemos crecido y aprendido como pareja y como individuos y eso nos hace ser mejores padres para Gabriel Alexander. Sé que muchas parejas jóvenes lo hacen muy bien, pero para nosotros esto ha sido lo adecuado para el bienestar de nuestro hijo.”

City of Doral Public Works Director

Dr. Joan Shen discusses Plans for Traffic Solutions By Maria Alejandra Pulgar @marialepulgar - NAHJ #37172

r. Joan Shen joined the City of Doral as Public Works Director in January 2016 and since then has been working to develop alternative solutions to the main issue residents and businesses in Doral complain about: traffic, roadways and public transportation. As a resident in the area for twelve years, Dr. Shen has experienced first hand the effects that population growth and city expansion have generated on the traffic in the city. Her previous experience in Public Works with the Miami-Dade County and before that with the Florida Department of Transportation provided her with the right tools to tackle the task at hand. “I have a lot of experience dealing with traffic problems. I got my masters and PhD at FIU, specialized on civil engineering and transportation” explained Shen, adding that her work experience in public entities allow her to propose in the city proved solutions to provide improvements. “With more developments and businesses coming to the city, the traffic has grown, but there is a traffic growth in the entire County. There have been changes in the 826 and 836 highways. Traffic has definitely increased and there is the need for improvement in the entire County.” Although her goal is to offer immediate solutions to alleviate traffic concerns, some implementations are planned in the long term because they involve coordinated investments and approvals between the County and the City while others are already in the process to enter operation. The updating of the Transportation Master Plan, as framework to continue implementing solutions to the traffic problem is in progress. Discussed in an open workshop with the public, it includes an array of alternatives to be implemented over time for the benefit of Doral residents.

SHORT TERM TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS

The main project to improve traffic in the short term is the installation of traffic signal monitoring cameras to improve the steady flow of traffic along main corridors. Dr. Shen explained that the idea behind the installation of monitoring cameras along Doral Boulevard is to expedite the flow of traffic by improving signal timing at the intersections with 107th and 87th avenues which are the busiest, by

the corridor, creating a steady flow of transit along the street or avenue.

LONG TERM TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS

Joan Shen monitoring vehicle queueing conditions to control how long the signals last. This project is being implemented with the support of the County, as they are the ones who control the operation of all traffic lights. The plan for the future is that all major corridors in the entire city (97th avenue, 25th, 58th and 74th street) will be monitored as well. It is important to emphasize that these cameras being installed are not for generating traffic tickets or to control infractions, they are connected to the County’s signal timing system. “We already purchased the street cameras, we are going to give to them to the County to install and the County is on the process of creating an Interlocal agreement; they will install the cameras for free and provide us with access to the traffic signal system.” With that access, the City will monitor the status of traffic volume at each traffic light, and then inform the County when traffic volume increases over the capacity of the corridor. At the County, they calibrate the timing along all intersections in

The first long-term project is the review of the Transportation Master Plan, which will include a comprehensive strategy to improve the traffic in the area, and will receive the input from residents in a series of workshops. The second long-term project is the interconnection of several main streets and avenues to provide additional alternatives for transit in rush hours. Opening these new streets or avenues will ease the traffic and complete the current grid. The first corridor to open was 97th avenue between 66th and 74th streets at the beginning of the year, and the next one, the portion of 109th avenue between 41st and 58th streets, will break ground in May. The reversible lines project, where the idea is to open certain corridors in only one way at rush hours, is still under feasibility study. It would take more than a year to implement it because, as Dr. Shen explained “we have to wait until the County finalizes the study, makes a final decision, recommends the solution to Doral, we inform the businesses that are going to bid, etc. The Council has to support the idea too, before we hire a consultant for the design, the procurement process. We have not discussed that. It is just an idea that we don’t know if it is feasible or not.” The recommendation on this project from the County is due by the month of June.

DORAL TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS ALSO DEPEND ON THE DRIVERS

All plans and projects to ease traffic that the City might implement will be to no avail if Doral residents and visitors do not play their part on respecting the law on the streets. Dr. Shen’s commitment as Public Works Director is to “work together with all agencies and our residents to continue to improve traffic.” Doral Residents’ commitment should be, on the other hand, to contribute with authorities and with the City by getting educated, following traffic rules, respecting other drivers on the street and avoiding blocking intersections or making illegal turns. Those are the attitudes and conducts that will help improve their daily commuting inside and out the City of Doral.

Entrevista con la Directora de Obras Publicas de la Ciudad de Doral

a Dra. Joan Shen comenzó a trabajar para la Ciudad de Doral en enero 2016 en el cargo de Director de Obras Públicas. Desde el comienzo ha estado trabajando en el desarrollo de alternativas para solucionar el mayor problema que confrontan los residentes y empresarios en la ciudad: el tráfico. Como residente del área por más de doce años, la Dra. Shen ha experimentado de primera mano los efectos del crecimiento poblacional y la expansión de la ciudad que han generado el incremento del tráfico en las vías principales a las horas pico. Su extensa preparación académica aunada a su experiencia previa, trabajando en Obras Públicas para el Condado de Miami-Dade y antes que eso en el Departamento de Transporte de Florida, le permitieron adquirir las herramientas y conocimientos necesarios para asumir efectivamente la tarea de encontrar salidas a los atascos de transito que sufre Doral diariamente. “Tengo mucha experiencia explorando soluciones a los problemas de tránsito. Obtuve mi maestría y doctorado en FIU especializándome en ingeniería civil y de transporte” explicó Shen, y añadió que su trabajo para entidades públicas le permitió proponer en la ciudad soluciones probadas que generan mejoras sustanciales. “Con los nuevos desarrollos y negocios que han surgido en Doral, el trafico ha crecido. Realmente es un asunto de todo el Condado. Por ello se construyeron las modificaciones a las autopistas 826 y 836. El tráfico en general se ha incrementado y de ahí la necesidad general de proveer soluciones que beneficien a todo el Condado.” Aun cuando su meta inmediata es encontrar soluciones que aligeren el tráfico, la implantación de algunas de ellas implica un trabajo a mediano y largo plazo, pues involucra la coordinación de inversiones y aprobaciones por parte del Condado y la Ciudad. La actualización del Plan Maestro de Transporte está en proceso y será discutido progresivamente en talleres públicos de trabajo para recibir la información de los residentes. Este plan crea el marco legal y normativo para la creación de soluciones para el transporte y trafico municipal.

SOLUCIONES A CORTO PLAZO

El primer proyecto para mejorar el flujo automotriz a corto plazo es la instalación de cámaras para monitoreo de flujo vehicular en los semáforos en las vías principales de Doral. La Dra. Shen explica que colocar estas cámaras de monitoreo a lo largo de Doral Boulevard permitirá acelerar el flujo vehicular en esta importante arteria vial, al mejorar el tiempo de duración de los semáforos en las

Joan Shen intersecciones más transitadas, como son las avenidas 107 y 87. Para implantar este proceso se cuenta con el apoyo del Condado, pues ellos son quienes controlan la programación de los semáforos. El plan a futuro es monitorear la duración de los semáforos en todas las otras avenidas y calles principales de la ciudad: avenida 97 y calles 25, 58 y 74. Es importante destacar que las cámaras instaladas no son en ningún caso para generar multas de transito o para controlar infracciones, sino que estas cámaras están enlazadas al sistema de monitoreo de semáforos del Condado. “Las cámaras ya fueron adquiridas y serán instaladas por el Condado. Estamos en proceso de crear un acuerdo intergubernamental. Ellos instalan las cámaras y nos permiten a nosotros tener acceso a sus sistemas de monitoreo de la duración de los semáforos y del flujo vehicular en las calles.” Con ese acceso, en la Ciudad se estará monitoreado el volumen de vehículos en todas las intersecciones. Cuando se detecte un aumento de volumen en la avenida o calle que sobrepase la capacidad de la arteria vial, se avisa al Condado para que calibre el tiempo de duración de los semáforos en todas las intersecciones sucesivas, creando un flujo constante del tránsito en la calle o avenida.

El primer proyecto a largo plazo es la revisión del Plan Maestro de Transporte, que incluirán estrategias amplias para mejorar el tráfico y facilidades de transporte en el área. Será un trabajo conjunto con la comunidad, quienes podrán aportar sus ideas en la serie de talleres públicos para discusión del plan que se estarán realizando en los próximos meses. El segundo proyecto a largo plazo es completar la interconexión de avenidas y calles principales, para proveer alternativas adicionales al flujo de transito en las horas pico. La primera conexión que se construyó fue la 97 avenida entre las calles 66 y 74, inaugurada a principio de año. Próximamente, en el mes de mayo, se comenzará el desarrollo de la porción de la avenida 109 entre las calles 41 y 58. El proyecto de calles con sentido reversible, según el cual ciertas calles o avenidas se abrirán en un solo sentido durante las horas pico, está actualmente en la fase de estudio de factibilidad. Tomará cerca de un año implantar un proyecto piloto, probablemente en la calle 25. La Dra. Shen explica que “tenemos que esperar a que el Condado complete el estudio de factibilidad, tome una decisión final y haga las recomendaciones a Doral para que podamos iniciar un proceso de licitación para otorgar el proyecto. Los concejales tendrán que apoyar la idea antes que podamos realizar la procura para contratar consultores para el diseño. Queda mucho aun por discutir sobre ese punto. Apenas es una idea que no sabemos si será factible o no.” Se esperan los resultados de factibilidad por parte del Condado para el mes de junio.

LAS SOLUCIONES AL TRÁFICO EN DORAL TAMBIÉN DEPENDEN DE LOS CONDUCTORES

El éxito de los planes y proyectos para mejoras en el tránsito de la Ciudad depende en gran medida de la colaboración de residentes y visitantes con respecto al cumplimiento de las leyes y normas de transito en las calles. El compromiso de la Dra. Shen como director de Obras Publicas es “trabajar junto con todas las agencias para la mejora continua del tránsito en la ciudad.” Por parte de los residentes de Doral el compromiso debe ser contribuir con las autoridades y la Ciudad al educarse, informarse, aportar ideas, seguir las reglas y leyes de tránsito, respetar a los demás conductores y evitar bloquear intersecciones o hacer giros ilegales. Esas serán las actitudes y conductas que ayudarán diariamente a mejorar las condiciones de traslado dentro y fuera de la Ciudad de Doral.

ast Thursday, April 14th, the music students of Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High School received a very special visit, the Venezuelan duet Chino & Nacho, Latin Grammy® winners, Ford Motor Company Fund and the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation arrived to make a $20,000 donation in musical instruments. The excited students of Doral’s school, which last year suffered a fire that damaged the majority of their instruments, received trumpets, saxophones, clarinets and flutes among other instruments. It is important to highlight that Latin Grammy in the Schools program is an event focused on informing and connecting music students with professionals of this Latin industry, by supporting the music department of educational institutions with financial limitations, and for the fifth consecutive year it has joined Ford Motor Company Fund to support music programs at schools.

Model and presenter Chiquinquirá Delgado was the host of the event. “Thanks to the generosity of Ford Motor Company Fund, we were able to donate 20.000 dollars in musical instruments to the Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High School and continue our mission of supporting the music department educational institutions with financial limitations”, claimed Vicepresident of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, Manolo Díaz. During the activity, singers Chino & Nacho shared with the students their personal stories and

experiences, they gave them advise and inspired them to follow their dreams. “Everybody has the capacity to achieve what they want, but you have to prepare yourselves, so don’t stop studying”, said Nacho. “It is always good to inspire the young and tell them that they are not alone in their fight to grow as professionals”. As for Chino, he told the story of how he got where he is today, with effort and perseverance, and advised them to never waste opportunities. “For us it is a great responsibility and honor, to share with the students of Ronald Reagan and deliver this donation”, claimed Chino. The Social Responsibility Manager at Ford Motor Company Fund, Joe Ávila, said he felt very proud. “We have been doing this for many years. We have been working to help our community for over 65 years, focusing not only on safe driving yet also on building a brilliant future. And education is priority. And it has been a priority for many years through scholarship programs so that the young attend both school and motivational programs such as the “Ford Driving Dreams”. On the other hand, RRDSH Principal Juan Carlos Silva, added: “We are thrilled. It’s a great help... Beyond that, not only the bringing on the instruments which were very grateful for, but the fact that they came to our school, the students of doral are going to have the chance to meet Latin Grammy artists, Chino & Nacho. Our population is highly Venezuelan so its good because they can relate to them and see how people in their own country and their own culture have succeeded through the arts. El pasado jueves, 14 de abril , los estudiantes de música de Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High School recibieron una visita muy especial, y es que, el dúo venezolano Chino y Nacho, ganadores del Latin Grammy®, Ford Motor Company Fund y la Fundación Cultural Latin Grammy llegaron allí para hacer un donativo de $20,000 en instrumentos musicales. Trompetas, saxofones, clarinetes y flautas entre otros instrumentos, fueron recibidos por los emotivos estudiantes de la escuela de Doral, la cual el año pasado sufrió un incendio que dañó la mayoría de sus instrumentos. Cabe resaltar que el programa educativo Latin Grammy en las escuelas es un evento que informa y conecta a estudiantes de música con profesionales de esta industria latina apoyando instituciones educativas con limitaciones financieras en sus departamentos de música y por quinto año consecutivo se ha unido con Ford

Ellos vinieron de inmediato; dijeron vamos a ayudar; vamos a hacer esto y se movieron rápido ... Es increíble”. “Hemos perdido dos tercios de nuestros instrumentos. Hemos perdido cerca de $ 100,000 en instrumentos por lo que poco a poco nos estamos recuperando y esto es otro paso más en el proceso. na infancia marcada por las enseñanzas de su abuela en cuanto a la preparación de un rico café, despertaron en Paramaconi Acosta su pasión por esta bebida, a la cual califica como un sinónimo de familia, al considerar que un buen café logra darte la misma sensación de bienestar que el abrazo de un ser querido. Paramaconi Acosta es un barista venezolano certificado por la Asociación Americana de Café (SCAA, por sus siglas en inglés) y por la Asociación Europea de Café (SCAE, por sus siglas en inglés) con estudios y entrenamientos prácticos en Austria, Brasil, Colombia, Perú, Estados Unidos, Francia e Italia y

recuerdas haberlo tomado, pero el café que sube es, realmente, mucho más”. Nos cuenta Paramaconi que el café que sube es aquel “que te hace cerrar los ojos, que te lleva al instante, que si tienes el pensamiento en el pasado o en el futuro, cuando te lo tomas te hace sentir el presente, esos son los cafés que debemos lograr y atender porque son los que quedan en nuestra memoria y nos dan esa sensación de familia.” Paramaconi acota que el secreto de buen café también depende del momento. “Definitivamente, el mejor café depende de lo que necesites en un instante determinado y lo importante es que ese café que nos tomemos realmente supla esa necesidad de satisfacer el paladar y se convierta en un momento memorable.” “Por ejemplo, para mí, el mejor café es el de la mañana. Me encanta el café del desayuno: una buena arepa venezolana con todos sus contornos y un buen café con leche en polvo, dulce. Ese es mi momento de familia, de compartir y no sería lo mismo sin la compañía de un café”, relata Paramaconi.

desde luego, Venezuela, quien ahora se unió al nuevo equipo de Café Dominó en la ciudad de Doral. “A mí un buen café lo primero que me recuerda es a mi abuela, por eso digo que es sinónimo de familia. Cuando era muy pequeño ella compraba el café verde en el mercado, lo tostaba en una paila y me ponía a molerlo, mientras ella calentaba el agua para preparar un “guayoyo” que es como se conoce en Venezuela al café colado. Recuerdo que ella me lo daba con muchísima leche.” “Por eso para mí”, agrega Paramaconi, “un café es mucho, pero mucho más que el perfil, la cata, el balance, es sencillamente familia. Claro, tal como lo aprendí en París de mi profesora Gloria Montero, existen dos tipos de café: el café que baja y el café que sube. El que baja es aquel que te tomas porque necesitas cafeína y que, al día siguiente, ni siquiera

A pesar de toda esta vinculación familiar y personal con el café de Paramaconi sus inicios profesionales en esta área vinieron de la mano de una casualidad. “Yo vengo del área del diseño gráfico y tenía un cliente muy importante en Venezuela que era una transnacional a la que le manejábamos su marca, sin embargo, debido a la situación del país, cerraron sus operaciones en el 2006 y yo decidí tomarme un descanso para pensar sobre lo que realmente quería hacer en mi vida”. “Obviamente, llegué a la conclusión que el café era lo que me apasionaba y pensé en montar un sitio en el que la gente se pudiera tomar un buen café, pero cuando empecé con esta idea me di cuenta que yo tampoco sabía nada de café a nivel profesional y fue cuando inicié mi proceso de capacitación”. Este proceso de capacitación en el mundo del café no sólo llevó a Paramaconi a visitar un sin número de países y a formar parte de las más destacadas asociaciones

de café internacionales, sino que también lo llevó a la conclusión de que, en Venezuela, no hacía falta otra cafetería, sino escuela de café. Con esta idea fundó, la Escuela Venezolana de Café, localizada en la ciudad de Caracas, la cual está enfocado en el barismo. “El barista es la persona que hace de tu taza de café una experiencia sensorial. No sólo es experto en extracciones de café, también debe entender cómo servir y presentar ese café, además debe tener conocimiento del sabor de ese café que está preparando y saber comunicárselo s su cliente”. “Y es que, en la Escuela Venezolana de Café nos tomamos en serio el café. Organizamos catas y charlas sobre cafés, asesoramos a tiendas sobre como elevar la calidad de sus bebidas a base de café, entrenamos personal y capacitamos a las personas interesadas en formar parte de este interesante mundo y en darle su justo valor al café venezolano”, explica Paramaconi. Justamente en una de sus charlas es que Paramaconi Acosta conoce a los actuales propietarios de Café Dominó, quienes se encontraban en el público y tras escuchar su exposición, lo invitaron a unirse a este proyecto que tiene como visión primordial innovar en el mercado cafetero del Sur de la Florida. La capacitación cafetera y la pasión por esta bebida de Paramaconi se ha convertido en uno de los pilares de Café Dominó, donde más allá de mantener los sabores tradicionales del café latinoamericano, se impone la preparación de nuevas mezclas y sabores para satisfacer a los más exigentes paladares. Paramaconi continúa, igualmente, sus actividades cafeteras en Venezuela, pues a pesar de la latente crisis que vive este país latinoamericano, se niega a abandonar su selva de concreto. “Mantengo mis operaciones en Venezuela, porque me encanta mi país, con su caos incluido y lo siento mío”. En cuanto a la herencia cafetera de la abuela de Paramaconi Acosta, podemos asegurar que sigue traspasando generaciones, pues su hijo de apenas dos años y medio, ya utiliza su delantal de barista para preparle el café del domingo a papí y a mamí.

Doral Academy placed 9th in the state at Mu Alpha Theta math convention

oral Academy Charter High School math team competed at the State level at the annual Mu Alpha Theta Convention held in Orlando, and won 31 awards during the event. Overall, they placed 9th in the state, beating all schools from Miami Dade County. Their group effort earned them an 8th place trophy on the Interschool test and a 7th place on poster.

These students won two awards each: Franco Vera placed 15th in Integration, 15th in Area & Volume; Carlos Estrada placed 10th in Geometry and 11th in Quadrilaterals ; Felipe Contipelli placed 10th in BC Calculus and 7th in Sequences & Series; Tomas Alvarez placed 6th in Logs & Exponents and 25th in Theta Individuals; Amanda Fernandez placed 12th in Analytic Geometry and 19th in Complex Numbers; Pedro Contipelli placed 14th in Theta Functions and 19th in Geometry. Also winning individual trophies were Vivek Brahmatewari placed 15th in Limits & Derivatives; Karanveer Sandhu placed 12th in Equations & Inequalities; Daniela Hernandez placed 12th in Geometry; and Liliana Sosa, placed 17th in Logs & Exponents. In addition to these awards, sophomore Crystal Zhang submitted a design for official state T-shirt which was

chosen as the winner. Her design was used on the convention shirt, program and all test materials.

Seniors Liliet Sosa, Ana Guimaraes, and Mariam Cruz accept the 9th place sweepstakes award for Doral Academy Charter Two students were given Squirty Chicken awards for their consistently high performance throughout the three month competition season. Anirudh Rahul placed 3rd and Ethan Partidas 4th out of all participants from all schools throughout the state in their division. They will compete at Nationals in St. Louis in July.

a historia comenzó en febrero, con un mensaje procedente Sanne Leerdam, una estudiante del profesorado de educación física en Curazao, que estaba haciendo allí el cierre de su carrera, buscaba realizar un intercambio deportivo para sus alumnos del club Jeugd Hockey Curaçao. Cuando Gabriela Cappanera -directora de Doral Field Hockey y promotora de esta disciplina en la región- leyó la propuesta, no dudó un instante y abrió las puertas de su institución para el equipo curazaleño. El viernes 15 de abril, Leerdan y su colega, Nick Vemagen, llegaron con sus alumnos al Doral Meadow Park para hacer una práctica conjunta con los jugadores locales, que se vio interrumpida por la lluvia con tormenta eléctrica. Un día después, se realizó el tan ansiado partido amistoso. Luuk Rademaker marcó los dos goles de los visitantes, y Sofi Salvatore y Luli Pannunzzio goleó por el equipo

Durante la jornada había brillado el hockey y una incipiente amistad entre ambos equipos. Los entrenadores de ambos clubes ya están pensando en organizar otra gira para todas las divisiones, tanto aquí como en Curazao, pero… shhh!, por ahora, guardemos el secreto.

Es por eso que los únicos partidos que juegan durante el año, son entre las distintas categorías de la institución. Y es por eso, también, que llegaron a Doral tan motivados y agradecidos. En 2015, habían hecho una gira a la vecina isla de Aruba, pero el viaje a la Florida lo vivieron como una gran aventura y una experiencia muy enriquecedora.

Reconocimiento al aporte cultural en Medley de “Baila con Micho” “El baile es mi vida”, así se expresa el bailarín y coreógrafo Michel Valdes “Micho”, quien junto con su esposa Anays creara hace poco mas de un año la academia Baila con Micho. Todo surgió como un proyecto en un pequeño salón en Flagler; Allí empezó a trasmitirles a sus alumnos los conocimientos adquiridos a lo largo de su carrera artística, donde ha tenido la oportunidad de compartir escenario con grandes figuras como Marc Anthony, Don Omar, Gloria Estefan entre otros. No tardo mucho en contagiar a las personas con su sabor latino y en muy poco tiempo el negocio tuvo que ampliarse y trasladarse a un espacio mas grande. Es así como llega a la ciudad de Medley, donde hoy cuenta con mas 300 alumnos entre adultos y niños. El aporte cultural a la comunidad así como la participación en distintos eventos sociales conllevaron a que el 17 de Marzo del presente año, el alcalde de Medley Roberto Martell y miembros de la ciudad estuvieran presente en la Ceremonia Oficial del Corte de Cinta y le otorgaran un reconocimiento por la labor realizada.

t started out in 1942 as a Navy blimp base to guard the Florida Straits against enemy attack by Nazi U-boats. Nearly two decades later, it served as intelligence headquarters for anti-Castro freedom fighters, later becoming an Army reserve base and finally a Marine Corps reserve center. Now the former Richmond Naval Air Station in South Miami-Dade, which was shuttered in 1992 and once faced demolition, is one step closer to reopening its doors as a military museum following years of restoration to bring its rich history to life for generations to come. The venerable three-story wood-frame building received a big boost this March from the state of Florida, especially Florida Senator Anitere Flores and Florida House Representatives Frank Artiles and Jose Felix Diaz, who sponsored the bills to ensure the $1.5 million in funding to complete the renovations. This crucial funding guarantees a December 2016 opening of the Miami Military Museum, which will house authentic military artifacts that detail the lives and stories of the men and women who defended our Country and tell the rich military history of South Florida, specifically Miami-Dade County. This very rewarding journey began in 2007, when

the Friends of the Miami Military Museum organized and mobilized to save the 14,000-square-foot building. I was proud to lend my support and the support of the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board to this worthy cause by working with my colleagues on the Board of County Commissioners to secure $3 million for the restoration project through a voter referendum. I then joined the successful effort to lobby the state for the recently approved additional funds needed to complete the project. The former military base holds special significance to me because I was stationed there as a young noncommissioned officer during my tour with the Marines. I still remember how the floor sounded when you walked on it and the distinct smell of a Marine Corps barracks. A special note of thanks to my dear friend U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer Dr. Anthony Atwood for his enormous contribution to this cause. Without his dedication and perseverance, this historic building would not even still be standing, much less opening as a museum later this year.

I encourage you to stay tuned for the announcement of the official grand opening of the museum. By patronizing and supporting the museum, you will not only be learning about our rich past, but you will be paying tribute to the great men and women from MiamiDade County who have served our nation.
