The Healthy Lifestyle Path

J

By: Diana Bello Aristizábal

Enero/January 20, 2019

anuary is the perfect month to establish a course of action that allows us to achieve New Year’s resolutions. Having said that, to enjoy of better health is the most important one of them, which is why in this issue we trace the route to help you start, and end the year living healthy. According to Dr. Bryan Curry, Fellow of American College of Cardiology, by the end of the year it is common for people to take less care of themselves. However, it is essential that habits learned throughout the holiday season, such as eating high-calorie foods or not working out, do not extend over time so that health prevails. “If people don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle, they can increase the risk of developing diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, and cancer, among other things. Is just not the illness itself, but also the disability that comes along”, explains Dr.Curry.

14

For the cardiologist, when someone develops a disease, such as obesity or diabetes, may not have the energy to enjoy simple things in life, like playing with his or her child, which can compromise the quality of life on a daily basis. Early prevention is vital. “When you are young, you often think that you can bounce back things quickly, but as you get older you don’t turn around quite as quickly. Therefore, if you start practicing good habits in your twenties, you will get the long-term benefits of good health in your forties, fifties or sixties”, says Dr. Curry However, it is never too late to start. If this is your goal, but you have never done anything to take care of yourself, the advice is to visit a doctor you can trust first before starting a feeding regime or physical training so that you can know how is your overall health. “The beginning of the year is a good time to do a medical check-up, but make sure that your doctor guides you on how often you need to be seen because depending on age, and medical history some people need to go once a year, while others every four months”, explains Dr. Curry. While you schedule a doctor’s appointment, here we present three ways that can help you reach your health goal during the current year and, why not, extend it for the rest of your life.

SMART AND BALANCED NUTRITION

Charis Meckley, Licensed dietitian nutritionist, and Clinical Dietitian at Kendall Regional Medical Center

explain that although in December people usually have an improper diet, she does not recommend starting a juice cleanse diet to help the body get rid of accumulated toxins. “They tend to be risky, provide low calories, and an inadequate amount of vitamins, minerals, and proteins.”, she says. However, she does recommend following some guidelines to detoxify from the calorie-rich food filled with sugar, fat, and sodium that we usually eat during the holiday season. “Keep in mind that your kidneys, and other organs in your body function as a natural way of detoxing, and eliminating waste products,” says Meckley. Nevertheless, to support this natural process you can start by drinking an adequate amount of fluids daily, particularly water, eating 5 to 9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables per day to get the necessary intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, and consume whole grains like quinoa and oats. It is also suggested to eat probiotics obtained from fermented dairy foods, such as yogurt, and monitor the size of the plate at each meal. For this, Meckley recommends the website www.choosemyplate.gov that illustrates a healthy plate model with the percentage required for each food group. On the other hand, it is essential to stay away from trendy diets that are usually temporary. “A lot of those diets may show results right away, but once you return to eating the same as before, the weight is regained”, says the expert. For this reason, if your goal is to lose weight, the first step is to visit a registered dietitian who can help you develop a healthy eating pattern according to your individual needs and medical history. On another note, think of your feeding regime as a long-term lifestyle instead of a temporary fix, because often times people begin to adopt healthy habits on January, and abandon them a few months later. To prevent this from happening, Meckley suggests setting a weekly goal that is simple, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timebased. So, instead of focusing on losing six pounds, establish a plan to achieve that goal. For example, walking 40 minutes 4 times a week.

GUIDED AND FUN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Experts in physical training agree that playing a sport or working out is essential to have good

health. “Exercise prevents you from being sick, increases your endorphins, and improves any aspect of your life,” says Jessica Llanos, Head Coach of Orangetheory Fitness Doral. Luis Sánchez, karate teacher, and champion, Sensei and founder of Florida Karate Clubs, has a similar opinion. “When we exercise, we improve aesthetically, our selfesteem grows, and we feel good about ourselves,” he says. Given this fact, we all need a personal motivation to start and remain in a sports routine. “Not everyone wants to be a size 0. The weight loss, and fitting into that dress that we love so much is an extra for some people”, says Jessica Llanos. Some people start working out to reverse a medical diagnosis, others because they love to exercise or because they want to participate in a competition, such as a marathon. The good news is that nowadays there are many options to work out that meet everyone’s needs, from online videos, group classes, gyms or social network groups. Those who are on beginners level can begin by walking every day. However, there are other alternatives, with a variety of routines, designed for those who need an extra boost to keep on going. The Orangetheory Fitness studio, for example, offers a training model in which each class is led by a coach and lasts 60 minutes, 30 dedicated to cardiovascular exercise, and 30 to muscle building exercises. It has an innovative concept because although at first glance it looks like a typical gym, is far from being one, taking into consideration that nobody exercises without the coach’s supervision, who is aware of the goals, and achievements of each participant. Every client is being

monitored and moves along different performance zones divided into colors. “We have different training levels. It is important to start in the standard one, especially if you have never exercised before, to avoid feeling exhausted, but work out at least 3 times a week, and regardless of what type of training you do, get the guidance of a professional so you don’t get injured, and meet your goals”, says Llanos. Another alternative for those who wish to stay motivated is karate. “I recommend it because we can always learn new movements. It is an exercise that challenges you all the time. In general, I think it’s important to always push yourself to the limit to be better”, he says. According to the Sensei, who has been practicing karate for more than 30 years, every day he sees people beginning, and then abandoning physical activity due to a lack of discipline. “You have to start somewhere and commit, even more so when you do not feel like training. It’s about making it a priority like eating or brushing your teeth, and not looking for excuses”, he advised. A recommendation to not give up practice is to train with someone because there is nothing more motivational than having a person around who reminds us that we have a goal with ourselves.

A SHOT OF VITAMINS

Vitamins that are taken through food are one of the best sources for vitality. However, many people have

deficiencies in some of them and, therefore, different health problems. Although according to many nutritionists there is no better way to obtain the nutrients that we need than by having a healthy diet, some people need supplementation, because vitamins are essential to regulate many body functions and to build tissues, cells and genetic material. For those who want to supplement, there is an alternative called intravenous Vitamin Therapy or Vitamin Serum, which involves injecting high doses of an amount of vitamins and minerals into a vein, during a certain period of time. “This therapy is used to improve health, increase the body’s immunity, and healing process, since the mixture of vitamins and nutrients is delivered directly into the bloodstream,” state the founders of Smile Studio Wellness, one of the companies specialized in such therapy.

The vitamins available are: Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Magnesium, Selenium, Glutathione, Zinc, Manganese and Molybdenum. Also, they also offer cocktails where several vitamins are combined. For example, there is the Dr.G cocktail, composed of vitamin C, B-complex, D3, and Glutathione.

Plan de Acción para el 2019

El camino hacia una salud plena.

Por Diana Bello Aristizábal

E

Enero/January 20, 2019

na Maria Rodriguez, former Councilwoman for the City of Doral was elected on November 6th as Representative to the Florida Legislature for District 105, which includes portions of Miami-Dade, Broward and Collier Counties. Sworn-in for her new office on November 20th, during the organizational session of the legislature, Rodriguez is very enthusiastic to continue in public service, after successfully doing it in Doral for eight years. District 105 “goes from Doral to Naples and from Miramar down to the Hammocks. It is a much bigger space to cover than Doral. Now I am representing a much larger area.” Rodriguez was chosen vice-chair of the Miami-Dade State Representatives delegation and has also been designated to participate on the subcommittees of Business and Professions; Civil Justice; Health Quality; Higher Education Appropriations, and Public Integrity and Ethics. “We have both Republicans and Democrats, it is a bipartisan delegation and I feel we all have good intentions to work together, which is very important.” The 2019 Legislative Session is scheduled to begin on the first Tuesday of March. Until then, Rodriguez continues getting ready, meeting with her constituents at her district offices and other events to address their needs.

RUNNING FOR HIGHER OFFICE: A LIFE CHANGING DECISION

“I think in life you have to live each phase to the fullest and during my tenure in the Council, I served to the maximum capacity that I was able to. Now that I have moved on to the next phase of my life, I feel satisfied and content, because I think I did as good as a job as I could on the City Council” explains Rodriguez. “I am excited for my city because I feel it is going to stay on a good path right now and I feel that my talents, relationships and knowledge are going to be helpful to Doral in a different capacity in the Legislature.”

LEGISLATURE UNIVERSITY: LEARNING TO WORK AT STATE LEVEL

22

After her swearing-in ceremony in November in Tallahassee, Rodriguez attended, along with the rest of the Freshman Class of Representatives a program called Legislature University, “where each staff director from the different departments taught us the basics with regard to filing legislation and other activities that are going to be part of our job. It was very informative.” “The training was very thorough, because it talked about how the State works with the Federal Government; how the State Medicare and Medicaid work; what is the

State doing about water quality, which is a very important issue for me. I learned a lot about that.” The training included the State Budget process, ”because by Florida Constitution the only thing we are required to do during session is pass a budget, all other laws are extra. […] Every year we have a budget we have to stick out and that is why our State actually has reserves. We have a very good model.” They were also instructed about session protocol, which was very important, especially for freshman representatives who do not have previous experience in public office. “I have experience obviously because I was at City Council and you have to follow protocol and it is similar”, explains Rodriguez. ”You have to do everything in a very proper way, and it is very important to receive the training, because a lot of people do not have the experience.”

BALANCING FAMILY, JOB AND PUBLIC SERVICE

Staying organized is a key component for Rodriguez’s success. Being a wife, mother, full time employee and now State Representative, she credits her husband Clemente for providing her the stability and support needed to perform all her tasks. “He is my right hand, an incredible partner. He helps me a lot with the children. Sundays are the days for all of us to get together with the family; I usually do not do any events on Sundays, but the rest of the week I run full steam with all the activities.” “My family is very supportive. It is hard, but you value more the time that you are together, you appreciate it more, because it is more limited, but you try to make more quality time when you are together.”

She is also very appreciative of her employer, Miami Association of Realtors, who has supported her to continue working while serving in office. “I am thankful because my employer allows me to serve. And my husband is so incredibly helpful and supportive; I could not do it all without him.”

DORAL WILL ALWAYS BE HOME

Rodriguez and her family continue to live in Doral, although she travels twice a month to the other parts of her district and will have to be staying in Tallahassee during Legislature Session. “I try to go to the other side of the District twice a month and to Broward too. As I work full time from Monday to Friday, I do a lot of my constituent activities either early in the mornings before coming to work, or in the evenings.” She will have an office on the first floor of the Doral Government Center. During Session, Rodriguez will be living in Tallahassee from Tuesdays to Thursday, at a house she is renting with other representatives and she can walk to work. “A lot is going to be changing. But home will always be Doral.” Ana Maria Rodriguez has come a long way since serving in the Parks and Police for Kids board before running for Doral Council, but she has not changed her character. “I think it is important being genuine, truthful, never lie! If you ever lie it will come back to haunt you.” “People will have more respect for you when you are truthful. If you want to serve, do it for the right reasons, not for personal gain. People will see right through you and you will not go far. I want to continue serving, for the greater good.”

“LEGISLATURE UNIVERSITY”: APRENDIENDO A TRABAJAR A NIVEL ESTATAL

26

Miami Transplant Institute at Jackson Memorial Hospital Ranked Second Largest Transplant Center in the Nation

Sets New National Record in Kidney Transplantation

iami Transplant Institute (MTI), an affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – University of Miami Health System, was recently ranked the second largest transplant center in the United States by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS) - the highest ranking the center has achieved since its founding in 1970. During 2018, MTI performed 681 transplants, trailing only behind UCLA. “There is no gift more precious than the gift of life,” said Carlos Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “And thanks to the partnership between Jackson and UHealth, the Miami Transplant Institute is giving better care to more people than ever before – families who no longer need to spend all their time and energy on sickness, and instead can focus on a brighter future.” MTI’s individual organ programs were also recognized based on 2018 patient volume: • The kidney program is now the largest in the country with 433 transplantations done, breaking a national record of the largest volume performed by a U.S. transplant program since the OPTN started keeping records. • The pediatric intestinal/multivisceral program is ranked number 1, with the highest patient survival rates in the nation. • The abdominal program is ranked number 1. • The pancreas adult program is ranked number 2. • The pediatric program in total was the fourth largest, as was pediatric liver specifically. “The performance of the Miami Transplant Institute last year is a remarkable achievement, but it is about much more than numbers,” said Edward Abraham, M.D., executive vice president for health affairs and CEO of the University of Miami Health System. “It speaks to the dedication and skill of our surgeons, it speaks to the trust thousands of patients put in us when they choose the Miami Transplant Institute for their life-changing procedure, and it speaks to the way we benefit those patients and their families with the pioneering surgical care we provide each and every day.” MTI is one of the largest and most comprehensive transplant programs in the United States for both adults and children, with patients traveling from across the globe for every type of solid

organ transplant. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, pharmacists, operating room and intensive care unit staff, led by UHealth transplant surgeon Rodrigo Vianna, director, Miami Transplant Institute and chief of liver, intestinal, and multivisceral transplant. “Our patients benefit by gaining access to the newest, most advanced, most effective treatments, and procedures,” said Dr. Vianna. “Our kidney, liver and intestine programs, despite high volumes and challenging transplants, performed at or above the risk-adjusted expected outcomes published by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.” This notable accomplishment is made possible through the unique partnership and support between Jackson and UHealth - two of South Florida’s strongest institutions. “This achievement of the Miami Transplant Institute is a testament to the power of collaboration, which is dedicated to excellence,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., MHA, dean and chief clinical officer of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “With our partners at Jackson Health, we have built a program that is committed to providing the best outcomes in this complex field, and is now nationally recognized for that expertise.” Over and over, experts and advocates have advised patients to seek hospitals and surgeons with high volumes for complex medical care. Teams that regularly perform this kind of work are better prepared to deal with unforeseen complications. According to UNOS, every 10 minutes someone is added to the national transplant waiting list and, on average, 20 people die each day while waiting

for a transplant. One organ donor can save eight lives – and it is because of these donors and their families that the MTI team is able to perform this lifesaving work. “In organ transplantation, the greatest thankyou never belongs to our amazing professionals – despite their tireless efforts – but to the donors and donor families, without whom we would not do a single transplant,” said Luke Preczewski, Jackson’s vice president for transplant. “It is their gift of life that we strive to honor, and we are proud to celebrate the ways in which we tried so hard to live up to that commitment in 2018.” For more information, or to find out more about beginning the transplant journey, contact the Miami Transplant Institute: Physicians: 305-355-1684 MTIReferral@jhsmiami.org Patients: 305-355-5000 www.MiamiTransplant.org

A guide to fight PHONE SCAMS By Diana Bello Aristizábal

F

or the past years, in South Florida, it has become common to hear stories of people who have been victims of scam calls or hear someone complaining about the number of calls received every day with fraudulent purposes. Everyone knows the scene: The telephone rings, someone answers, and the caller requests money through different tricks, supplanting the identity of governmental or private organizations. In some instances, the potential victims do not fall into the trap but answer the call, which helps the criminals to verify the authenticity of the number, and typically they keep calling to achieve their goal. Because this is a well-known problem to the vast majority of people living in Florida and, especially in the Miami area, we will explain the current forms of fraud existing in the present, and how to fight against them.

PROTECT YOUR MONEY, AND PEACE OF MIND

32

According to Sergeant Armando Borrego of the Miami-Dade Police Department, and assigned to the Bureau of economic crimes, the cosmopolitan nature of Miami makes the criminal’s work easier. “There are people living here from all over the world who do not know how the American system works. So, if they get a call, apparently from the police, in which someone asks them for money to pay a bond with the purpose of releasing a family member from jail, for instance, they believe it based on how things work in their country of origin”, states the Sergeant. According to him, those who commit these criminal acts manipulate their victims to convince them that the situation exposed by phone is real. For this reason, people over 60 years old are usually the most affected ones. “It is common for them to call an individual alleging that his or her child suffered a car accident, should be taken to the hospital, and money is needed to cover for hospital expenses. Sometimes victims provide additional information, such as the name of the child, which helps them to complete the scam successfully”, he says. In this regard, it must be clarified that when a severe accident occurs anywhere in the United States with victims, fatal or not, the Police personally visit relatives registered as emergency contacts in the driver’s license to give an official statement of the situation. On the other hand, in case of an emergency, at any hospital, the patient will always be treated regardless of his or her medical insurance situation, and whether there is money available or not, something that would be analyzed only after the patient is stable. For Detective Marcos Rodriguez of the Miami-Dade Police Department, and also assigned to the Bureau of economic crimes, in cases like this, common sense should be used. “Call the person that allegedly is in trouble to check if he or she is ok. Also, request the name of the hospital, and contact them directly to verify if your relative was admitted”, says Detective Rodriguez. Also, be careful with gift cards that fraudsters request as a mean of payment in situations like the one described or when they call representing, for example, the IRS with the excuse of collecting a late tax. It should be noted that no organization in the country

asks for money by phone, let alone gift cards, as invoices are always sent by mail. According to the Federal Trade Commission website, gift cards are a popular way for scammers to steal money because they work as cash: if you buy one, you cannot get your money back, and the beneficiaries cannot be identified “Anyone who demands payment by gift card is always a scammer”, warns a press release of October 2018. As explained in it, “the caller will tell you to get the card at a particular store near you, often Walmart, Target, Walgreens, or CVS (…) then will demand the gift card number and PIN on the back of the card”. If you paid a scammer with this method, inform the company that issued the card or the store where you bought it to let them know that it was used in a scam. If you act quickly enough, the money might be able to be retrieved. Another common form of fraud is public services scams against small businesses. Usually, criminals call their victims by posing as official entities, such as the Florida Power Light, with the intention of taking money in exchange for not shutting off public service. In light of this, the Federal Trade Commission recommends hanging up immediately, calling the public service company, and the Commission, and talking to the business employees so that no one falls into the trap. “The problem with phone scams, or by any other mean, is that everyday criminals are looking for new ways to steal money. I advise people to trust but always verify everything”, says Sergeant Armando Borrego. Each time you receive a letter or a call on behalf of an organization, check on the Internet if the number shown is real. If, for instance, you are sent a letter for a traffic ticket, make sure that the time of the infraction is displayed, a picture of the car plate, and a link to a video with the moment when it was committed.

LOCK YOUR PHONE

Although not all calls with fraudulent purposes end in a scam, it is still annoying to be called several times a day and having to interrupt everyday activities. For this reason, it is convenient to make use of the different solutions offered by mobile phone companies to be protected against scams. T-Mobile, for example, has the Scam ID feature that allows you to immediately identify calls from potential scammers to prevent you from answering; also Scam Block that blocks them before criminals reach the user, and the Name ID that identifies the name, and location of the caller. Apple, on the other hand, allows its users to detect and block unwanted calls through independent providers applications. To download, and set them up on your cell phone, go into the support website or call the customer service line. Finally, you can access the Federal Trade Commission website www.donotcall.gov, in which, following a few simple steps, you can register several numbers to be included in the National Do Not Call Registry. Taking this action may help to reduce the number of incoming fraudulent calls.

Un llamado en contra de las ESTAFAS TELEFÓNICAS Por Diana Bello Aristizábal

D

On a solemn mass with two Archbishops in attendance

Doral Community Bids Heartfelt Farewell to Msgr. Tomas Marin

By Maria Alejandra Pulgar

T

@marialepulgar - NAHJ #37172

he founding pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Parish in Doral, Monsignor Tomas Marin, passed away due to cancer on December 28th 2018. The community gave him a heartfelt farewell during a solemn funeral mass on January 5th celebrated by the Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski. Deacons and seminarians, and more than fifty priests from the Archdiocese attended. They concelebrated, along with three bishops and Archbishop Emeritus Favalora on the solemn ceremony, filled with symbolism and loving memories of the life and work of Msgr. Marin. A brief life with plenty of achievements, Marin was devoted to selflessly serve people, first as a physician and later as a priest. His Excellency Msgr. Wenski called his friend Tomas “A physician of souls” on his eulogy, where he described the character of Msgr. Marin who, until the very end, was on top of organizing the New Year’s Mass schedule of his parish and of caring for the needs of his parishioners above his own. He even took care of handwriting Christmas cards to his parishioners and friends from his hospital bed; such were the subtle details that Msgr. Marin constantly had towards his flock that always distinguished him above other priests.

A MODEL OF FAITH, RESPONSIBILITY AND PERSEVERANCE

36

During his tenure, first as administrator and later as pastor of the emerging Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Doral, Msgr. Marin had to endure plenty of trials and overcome many obstacles to ensure the space where the current temple was built. The parish grew along with the city, and with it the responsibilities: finding bigger spaces to celebrate mass on weekends; opening the CCD office; creating an operating office to tend to the needs in the community; incorporating more mass schedules; administering baptisms, First Communions and weddings at borrowed chapels; all that while serving as chancellor of the Archdiocese and working towards obtaining the land, the funds and the permits to build the parish’s definitive home. His faith and perseverance payed back; after many negotiations he secured the land for the parish and it was time for him to move on to serve at St. Timothy and later at St. Augustine, his last parish. He took the opportunity on his homilies not only to explain scriptures to his parishioners but also to educate them on philosophy, and history, to give them context to understand the messages. He was generous on sharing his knowledge of philosophy, history and theology to help people grow in their faith. Msgr. Marin was an unforgettable Pastor, who served well the people and the Church.

SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT Syndrome Charles Lascano, MD CAQSM. Sports Medicine Specialist. Sanitas Medical Centers

Enero/January 20, 2019

38

houlder impingement syndrome is a condition that causes pain in the shoulder. It happens when a tendon or bursa in the shoulder gets squeezed between the bones that make up the shoulder. It is the most common cause of shoulder pain. Shoulder impingement is especially common among people who do repetitive activities that involve raising their arms to or above shoulder level. This condition is common in both young athletes and middle-aged people. Young athletes who use their arms overhead for swimming, baseball, and tennis are particularly vulnerable. Those who do repetitive lifting or overhead activities using the arm, such as paper hanging, construction, or painting are also susceptible. Pain may also develop as the result of a minor injury. Sometimes, it occurs with no apparent cause. The main shoulder impingement syndrome symptom is pain that occurs when the person lifts his or her arms overhead or reaches backwards. The pain can be at the shoulder, near the top of the arm, or down the outside of the arm. Common symptoms at an early stage include minor pain that is present both with activity and at rest, pain radiating from the front of the shoulder to the side of the arm, or sudden pain with lifting and reaching movements. SÍNDROME DE PINZAMIENTO o Compresión del Hombro Charles Lascano, MD CAQSM.

E

arterial o causar malestar estomacal.
