Women venture in ENTREPRENEURSHIP and LEADERSHIP

ccording to UN Women, women contribute significantly to the world’s economies, whether as entrepreneurs, employees, unpaid workers or leaders in different sectors. In spite of this, nowadays many suffer from discrimination, have little possibilities of rising into leadership positions or do not receive an economic compensation commensurate with their abilities or training. A proof of this reality is, for example, the wage gap that exists between men and women and the low participation of women in politics. According to the same organization, in most countries, women’s salaries represent between 70 and 90 percent of men’s, and in 2017 women represented less than 10 percent of the total parliament in 32 states of the world. For this reason, now that International Women’s Day is approaching, to be celebrated on March 8, it is time to analyze the current role of women in business and the shared responsibility that both women and the organizations have on this matter. To start, it must be clarified that although there are still challenges pending, not everything is about inequality or discrimination, because women have walked a long way that, little by little, is changing their role in society. “100 years ago nobody thought that there would be women present in the Congress, but today there is a 30 percent of female participation in the congresses worldwide,” explains María Gabriela Hoch, author of the book ‘Diario De Una Mujer Vital’. Thanks to how much the world has evolved on this issue, today we have several references at the national and local level. In the United States, a historic victory was reached last year when a total of 277 women ran for the House of Representatives and the Senate elections, and 113 of them were elected. In those elections, the Hispanic population marked a milestone when were elected Alexandria OcasioCortez, who at 29 years old became the youngest congresswoman in the history of the United States; Verónica Escobar and Sylvia García, both the first Hispanic women to represent Texas in Congress, and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, of Ecuadorian origin, and who obtained more than 50 percent of votes in Florida.

Doral has also evolved alongside with the country, because today we have the Vice Mayor Claudia Mariaca, who last year won the Public Service Award granted by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC) for her contribution to the city, and Councilwoman Christi Fraga, who in November 2012 became the youngest person in the city’s history to hold a seat at the City Council. On this list are also Digna Cabral, who last year was elected to hold seat 4 in the Council and the current State Representative, Ana María Rodríguez, who was a Doral Councilwoman between 2010 and 2018 and this year received a recognition of ‘In the Company of Women Awards’ in the ‘Government and Laws’ category.

BREAKING DOWN WALLS

Given the good news that has arisen in recent years about female leadership, it is essential to continue moving forward, because there is still much to be done to break down the walls that separate women from working life. Experts inquired believe that the problem lies in the society’s prevailing mentality. “Today a woman leaves a work meeting to pick up her children, and many think that she lacks commitment, whereas if the same situation happens to a male, many not only do not criticize him but praise his commitment as a father,” says María Gabriela Hoch, also founder and president of MGM Woman’s Empowerment and We evolution. This mass mentality must be switched if we want to create growth spaces in which both the woman’s and the man’s perspective are taken into account. Let’s not forget that man are equally important within the household to raise happy and healthy families. But, according to Hoch, this mentality is also extended to single women with no children, who instead of struggling between family and work,

often do between personal care and hobbies and work life. “It seems like women always have to prove their worth,” adds Hoch. For Carla Sánchez, international speaker and Coach, the first task that women have to change that reality is to start breaking down their own beliefs. “Beliefs can motivate you or block you preventing you from fulfilling your purposes. We must first identify which of those beliefs are limiting and which are enhancers, the first ones can be eliminated by constantly checking our thoughts, and the second ones should be used in our favor,” says Carla. On the other hand, it is essential to have a balanced life. To do so, Carla advises to identify what one wants to achieve in life, create a roadmap to meet personal goals and organize a schedule. “I always recommend my clients to take 15 minutes of the day, after putting their children to sleep, to write down how they felt that day, what tools helped them and how to create a different result the next day,” she adds. But in addition to the prevailing mentality and multifaceted nature of today’s women, for Belinda León, who has a Doctorate in education, was a candidate for City Council and is the owner of Premiere Educational Consulting, another barrier that women face today is they sometimes choose careers that do not necessarily pay high wages. “Statistically, the first job that a woman lands is not well paid,” says Belinda. Given this, according to the businesswoman, it is essential that universities include courses aimed at

preparing them for the corporate world and in which they can learn, for example, how to negotiate wage or how to do a job interview. To reduce this gap, she recommends companies to analyze the salaries they are offering to their women employees with the purpose of determining if the pay is fair and in line with their skills. Also, she suggests providing training whenever it is necessary to help them perform better at work.

PASSION, MENTORING AND NETWORKING

Given that now more than ever there are so many women interested in impacting the business world, it is necessary to know what are the ingredients that can make a difference. The first one is passion referring to an internal motivation that makes someone believe in what he or she is doing. Experts agree that there must be a much higher motivation than merely wanting to make money, especially when deciding to start a business. “Passion is key to launch any product or service because you are going to talk, breathe and eat about that 24 hours a day,” explains Belinda León. Annia Zavala, president and founder of Latina Pro and corporate Vice President of New York Life, knows all about passion. She created Latina Pro two

years ago with the intention of providing a space of personal and professional development for women. In her first events, only a couple of people attended, and now it has a network of more than 400 women. “You have to be very honest with yourself about how much time you are willing to invest in the activity you chose, and surround yourself with people who are in your same frequency and help you grow,” she explains. According to Carla Sánchez, that passion can take a clearer direction when the ‘why’ of the business is defined, as she is convinced that this is the first question any entrepreneur should ask herself. “If there is nothing that moves you from the innermost part of your being to survive the path of entrepreneurship, it will be tough to reach success, because you will most likely leave the business in the first setback,” she explains. Another ingredient is mentoring, which refers to seeking references for success in the field of interest. “If I have to launch my company and someone explains to me everything he or she did to achieve something similar to what I want, I can save myself 10 or 15 years of trial and error,” says María Gabriela. Annia Zavala has a similar opinion. She believes

that her growth mostly is due to the fact that she has sought the advice of experts in different areas to whom she has always listened with a receptive mind. In Miami, there are many ways to find mentors in the area of interest. One of them is through the Global Mentoring Walk, an event created by ‘Vital Voices Miami and We Evolution’ that will take place on March 9, and in which all participants can share experiences with other professionals. Another tool similar to mentoring is female networking that in recent years has become essential to growing in the business world. “We do not have the habit of networking incorporated into our lives, although it’s as easy as going to play golf or attend a soccer match and connect with other people there,” explains María Gabriela. There are even formally established groups and places that facilitate networking. In Doral, for example, there is the ‘Círculo de Mujeres Empresarias y Profesionales,’ the Doral Chamber of Commerce, which organizes different networking events, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools that offers different pieces of training throughout the year to connect with other businesswomen.

Mujeres apuestan por el EMPRENDIMIENTO y el LIDERAZGO

egún la ONU Mujeres, las mujeres contribuyen de manera significativa con las economías del mundo, bien sea como emprendedoras, empleadas, trabajadoras no remuneradas o líderes en diferentes sectores. Pese a esto, en la actualidad muchas sufren discriminación, tienen pocas posibilidades de acceder a posiciones de liderazgo o no reciben un salario acorde con sus capacidades o formación. Esta realidad se evidencia, por ejemplo, con la brecha salarial que existe entre hombres y mujeres y con la baja participación de las mujeres en la política. De acuerdo con la misma organización, en la mayoría de los países los salarios de las mujeres representan entre el 70 y el 90 por ciento del de los hombres y en el 2017 las mujeres representaban menos del 10 por ciento del total del parlamento en 32 Estados mundiales. Por esta razón, en el marco del Día Internacional de la Mujer, a celebrarse el próximo 8 de marzo, conviene analizar el papel actual de la mujer en los negocios y la responsabilidad compartida que tienen ellas y las organizaciones. Hay que empezar por aclarar que aunque aún existen retos por enfrentar, no todo es desigualdad o discriminación, pues se ha recorrido un largo camino que poco a poco está reivindicando el rol de la mujer en la sociedad. “Hace 100 años no se pensaba que habrían mujeres en el congreso y hoy hay un 30 por ciento de participación femenina en los congresos a nivel mundial”, explica María Gabriela Hoch, autora del libro ‘Diario de una mujer vital: Empoderamiento, liderazgo y mentoreo para tu evolución personal y profesional’. Gracias a que se ha avanzado en este aspecto, hoy contamos con varios referentes a nivel nacional y local. En Estados Unidos, el año pasado se registró una victoria histórica cuando un total de 277 mujeres se presentaron en las elecciones para la Cámara de Representantes y el Senado siendo elegidas 113. En esas elecciones, la población hispana marcó un hito al resultar elegidas Alexandria OcasioCortez, de 29 años y quien se convirtió en la congresista más jóven en la historia de Estados Unidos; Verónica Escobar y Sylvia García, ambas las primeras hispanas en representar a Texas en el Congreso, y Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, de origen

ecuatoriano, y quien obtuvo más del 50 por ciento de votos en la Florida. Doral también ha avanzado en paralelo con el país, pues hoy contamos con la Vice Alcaldesa Claudia Mariaca, que el año pasado obtuvo el premio de Servicio Público otorgado por la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Sur de la Florida por sus aportes a la ciudad, y la concejal Christi Fraga, quien en noviembre del 2012 se convirtió en la persona más jóven de la historia de la ciudad en ocupar un puesto en el Consejo de Doral. Se destacan en esta lista también Digna Cabral, quien el año pasado fue elegida para ocupar la silla 4 en el Consejo y la actual Representante Estatal, Ana María Rodríguez, quien fue concejal de Doral entre el 2010 y el 2018 y este año obtuvo un reconocimiento en los Premios ‘In the Company of Women’ en la categoría ‘Gobierno y Leyes’.

ROMPIENDO BARRERAS

Ante las buenas noticias que han llegado en los últimos años en lo que se refiere a liderazgo femenino, es importante continuar avanzando, pues aún queda mucho por hacer para eliminar las barreras que separan a la mujer de la vida laboral. Las expertas consultadas opinan que el problema está en la mentalidad imperante de la sociedad. “Hoy se sale una mujer de una reunión de trabajo para recoger a sus hijos y muchos piensan que a esa mujer le falta compromiso mientras que si ocurre lo mismo con un hombre, muchos no solo no lo critican sino alaban su compromiso como padre”, opina María Gabriela Hoch, también fundadora y presidenta de MGM Woman’s Empowerement y We evolution. Se trata, entonces, de una mentalidad colectiva que debe comenzar a modificarse para generar espacios de crecimiento en los que se tenga en cuenta tanto la mirada de la mujer como la del hombre, quien es igual de importante dentro del hogar para criar familias felices y sanas. Pero, de acuerdo con Hoch, esta mentalidad también se extrapola a las solteras y sin hijos, quienes en lugar de debatirse entre la familia y el trabajo, muchas veces lo hacen entre su cuidado personal y sus hobbies y la vida laboral. “Pareciera como que la mujer siempre tiene que estar demostrando su valía”, añade Hoch. Para Carla Sánchez, conferencista internacional,

Coach, especialista en productividad y creadora del programa en línea ‘Tu sueño es ya’ y del reto de 21 días ‘Cambia tu mente, cambia tu cuerpo’, la primera tarea que tienen las mujeres para cambiar esa realidad es comenzar ellas mismas a desmontar sus creencias. “Las creencias pueden impulsarte o bloquearte e impedir que cumplas con tus propósitos. Hay que primero identificar cuáles son limitantes y cuáles potenciadoras, las primeras se eliminan atendiendo constantemente a los pensamientos y las segundas se deben usar a favor propio”, asegura. Por otra parte, es importante tener una vida equilibrada. Para lograrlo, Carla aconseja identificar qué se quiere alcanzar en la vida, crear un mapa de ruta para cumplir las metas y organizar un horario. “Yo siempre le digo a mis clientes que después de dormir a los niños, se tomen 15 minutos para escribir cómo se sintieron ese día, qué herramientas les sirvieron y cómo crear un resultado diferente al día siguiente”, añade. Pero además de la mentalidad y el carácter multifacético de las mujeres actuales, para Belinda León, doctora en educación, ex candidata al Concejo de la ciudad y dueña de la empresa Premiere Educational Consulting, una barrera que enfrentan es que algunas veces eligen carreras que no necesariamente pagan sueltos altos. “Estadísticamente el primer trabajo que consigue la mujer no es bien remunerado”, asegura. Por eso, para la empresaria es importante que en las universidades se incluyan asignaturas que las preparen para el mundo corporativo en las que aprendan, por ejemplo, cómo negociar el salario o cómo hacer una entrevista de trabajo.

Para reducir este vacío, recomienda a las empresas hacer un análisis juicioso de los salarios que están ofreciendo a sus empleadas para determinar si son justos y están acorde con sus habilidades. Además, proporcionar todo el entrenamiento que sea necesario para ayudarlas a tener un mejor desempeño en el trabajo.

PASIÓN, MENTOREO Y REDES DE APOYO

Dado que ahora más que nunca existen tantas mujeres interesadas en impactar el mundo de los negocios, se hace necesario tener claro cuáles son esos ingredientes que pueden marcar una diferencia. El primero de ellos es la pasión que se refiere a esa motivación interna para creer en lo que se está haciendo. En este sentido, las expertas consultadas coinciden en que debe haber una motivación mucho más grande que el simple hecho de querer hacer dinero, especialmente cuando se está emprendiendo. “La pasión es necesaria para lanzar cualquier producto o servicio porque lo vas a hablar, respirar y comer las 24 horas del día”, explica Belinda León. Eso lo sabe bien Annia Zavala, presidenta y fundadora de Latina Pro y Vicepresidenta corporativa de New York Life, quien hace dos años empezó una

organización creada para el desarrollo personal y profesional de las mujeres con eventos a los que solo asistían un par de personas y hoy cuenta con una red de más de 400 mujeres. “Tienes que ser muy honesta contigo y plantearte cuánto tiempo estás dispuesta a dedicarle a la actividad que escogiste. Además de eso, rodearte de personas que estén en tu frecuencia y te ayuden a crecer”, explica. Pero esa pasión puede tomar un rumbo más claro cuando se define el ‘por qué’ de un negocio, tal y como lo explica Carla Sánchez, quien está convencida de que esta es la primera pregunta que debe hacerse cualquier emprendedor. “Si no hay algo que te mueva desde lo más interno de tu ser para sobrevivir el camino del emprendimiento, será muy difícil llegar al éxito, pues al primer revés lo vas a dejar”, añade. Otro ingrediente es el mentoreo que se refiere a buscar referentes de éxito en el campo de interés. “Si tengo que lanzar mi empresa y hablo con una persona que me cuenta todo lo que hizo para lograr algo similar a lo que yo quiero, me puedo ahorrar 10 o 15 años de ensayo y error”, explica María Gabriela. Annia Zavala tiene una opinión similar, pues asegura que su crecimiento se debe en gran parte

a que ha buscado la asesoría de personas expertas en diferentes áreas a quienes ha escuchado siempre con una mente receptiva. En Miami hay muchas formas de conseguir mentores en el área de interés. Una de ellas es a través del ‘Global Mentoring Walk’, un evento creado por Vital Voices Miami y We Evolution que se llevará a cabo el próximo 9 de marzo y en el que todas las participantes pueden alimentarse de la experiencia de otras profesionales. Otra herramienta similar al mentoreo son las redes de apoyo femeninas que en los últimos años han cobrado gran fuerza para crecer en el mundo de los negocios. “No tenemos incorporado en nuestras vidas el hábito del networking, aunque es tan fácil como salir a jugar golf o ir a un partido de soccer y conectar con otras personas”, explica María Gabriela. Incluso, hay grupos formalmente establecidos con ese propósito y lugares que facilitan esta conexión laboral. Tan solo en Doral está el Círculo de Mujeres Empresarias y Profesionales, la Cámara de Comercio de Doral, que organiza diferentes actividades de networking y Miami-Dade County Public Schools que ofrece diferentes entrenamientos a lo largo del año para conectar con otras empresarias.

First Female Hispanic Lieutenant Governor of Florida

My passion is my community and giving back to my community, working on the issues that are important” expressed Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Núñez, the first Hispanic Female to serve on that position in the State of Florida. As the running mate of Governor Ron DeSantis, Nuñez played a key role during the campaign, representing important minorities in the Republican gubernatorial ticket that ultimately brought them to replace Rick Scott in Tallahassee, after winning a very tight election. Responsible and dedicated in all areas of her life, Núñez has been working in public service since 2010 when she was elected State Representative for District 112th, which included the City of Doral. Since then, she has been involved on working to provide the community with resources to solve important issues like “child safety and wellbeing, which are something I have always been passionate about both personally and professionally.” A mother of three children, a girl and two boys, she credits the support of her family as one of the main factors that allowed the success of her career, both as a professional and as politician. Wife, mother, executive, politician, public servant; Jeanette Núñez approaches all roles with responsibility, passion and dedication, making her a role model for women and girls, especially Hispanics in the community.

ADVOCATING FOR DIFFICULT ISSUES AND EMPOWERING GIRLS

Issues related to the protection of children, especially girls and women, have always been a focus of Núñez’s work. She served on the board of Kristi House, an “organization dedicated to prevent child sexual abuse, and also on the Statewide Human Trafficking Council board.” “Those issues are very important to me as a mother and as a policymaker, because I think those are topics that we do not like to talk about, because they are so dark and so ugly, because it is very difficult to even understand the horrors that happen to young girls and young boys, both on sexual abuse, human trafficking, and commercial sexual exploitation. Obviously as a mom anything that has to do with children is very important to me front and center” explained Núñez. As a policymaker she has the chance to work on issues that affect not only women but everyone in the State, and considers that finding solutions provides more opportunities for women to thrive and advance. Núñez is passionate about working to provide the best quality education to all children in the State and especially for girls and young women, “making sure that in particular girls have an environment where they can thrive in and excel”. She explains that working in politics, especially in higher offices in Tallahassee or Washington, is more challenging for women

due to the high amount of travel and time that have to be devoted to the job, which makes it difficult oftentimes for women who are mothers, or have other family responsibilities to make the decision to run for office. However, “this year both in Congress and in Tallahassee we saw record number of women running and winning office.” Times are definitely changing and Núñez is part of that change. “I think that it is important that girls understand, and that is something I take very personal in my role, that they have an opportunity to reach the highest levels of any industry, whether it is business or politics, and whether or not they feel that it is a right fit for them, as long as they are passionate and work hard”, affirmed Núñez.

PRIORITIZE AND DELEGATE: KEYS TO BALANCE WORK AND LIFE

Núñez considers her mom, who at 82 still works on import and export, her main role model “in terms of passion and dedication. She has always been a great mom and a great grandmother too. She helps me with my kids and I am greatly appreciative.” As a mother of three children between the ages of 20 and 12, Núñez has relied on the support over the years of her husband, her parents and her in-laws to balance family, work and public service. “It is important that you prioritize and delegate. When you are a young mom you want to be perfect and you want everything to be amazing. You have to come to a point in your life where you really put emphasis in what is really important. I always tell myself ‘when you are with them, be present’ because they need your attention and they want your focus, and they want individualized attention. We really try to balance work/life which is I think one of the biggest challenges for working women.” “Ultimately your children, they benefit of seeing you on leadership roles on politics or business, it sets a good example, a role model, especially for girls, but it also comes with a price, because sometimes you are not able to be at all their events or going with them to field trips. I think I have been able to manage, somewhat well, but much due to the assistance of my parents and my in-laws.” Her children are proud of having her serving as Lt. Governor of Florida, although at the beginning they were not too thrilled because she needs to travel more. However they are now very excited and support her on her task, especially her oldest son who “loves politics. I can see him at some point following my footsteps.”

“THERE IS STRENGTH ON BEING COMPASSIONATE AND HELPFUL”

Over her years in service Núñez, a Republican, has had the chance to work with women in both sides of the isle on important issues, achieving results by focusing on finding middle ground and passing legislation that provides solutions for the people and open paths for more solutions

in the future. “I have always worked in a manner that I am willing to listen to people, I have always had an open door. At the end of the day what matters is your passion for public service. We may not agree on everything, and I have my set of beliefs and principles that guide me in my work and they have theirs, but I think ultimately, everyone that runs for office comes from a good place. […] I respect everyone, and I expect the same in return. “I am happy to work with all women to create good policies that provide more opportunities and more women involvement in politics. I think that is a goal we all have, whether they are republican, democrats or independent, it doesn’t matter. I want to push for policies that are going to provide more opportunities for women, not only to serve but to get involved, that is very important. As a mother of a young girl I want to make sure she has no limits in the future.” She has been fortunate to have worked with good leaders, men and women, who have been respectful and supportive on her professional and political career. However, she is aware that is not the case for many women.

Núñez considers she is a strong woman in terms that she has a strong faith and cares “for people that are vulnerable. I always try to think what I can do to make the situation better for others, especially for those who have no voice. I think strength is something different for everyone, but I think there is strength on being compassionate and helpful to others.”

IN FLORIDA POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS

Jeanette Núñez was considering taking a break from public office when Ron DeSantis reached out to ask her to consider being his running mate for the Florida gubernatorial race. She felt honored and after a lot of thought, prayers and discussions with her family and others who encouraged her, she made the decision, because DeSantis “made it very appealing to me from the standpoint of all the great things he wanted to accomplish.” “Being part of that ticket allowed me to join him and to articulate our message and our vision and I think

it made a difference. I am very glad that I made the decision to join him. It was a tremendous honor; it is a privilege to be the first Hispanic Female Lieutenant Governor. And I take that privilege with a tremendous sense of responsibility.” “I think that it is important as a woman, no matter what role you have, to show young girls and boys that we have limitless opportunities to do what we want, with passion and dedication, it is a source of pride and responsibility.” “In the State of Florida the possibilities are endless. I think we have a very bright future ahead of us as a State, and that holds true for both male and female residents of Florida. There are a lot of great things that the State has to offer, like low taxes, climate, environment; we are such a unique State.” “And Doral is such a unique city in Florida. It has a lot to offer; it is a microcosm of everything that is great with the State, you have it all” said Núñez. “Doral has too much to offer as a central, focal point in our County, a County that has grown tremendously. I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to represent the State of Florida, but I always have a special place in my heart for the areas that I have grown up in, and spent quite a bit of time in, whatever I can do to further the interests and opportunities for Doral residents they have a friend in me.”

Mi pasión es mi comunidad y retribuir a mi comunidad, trabajar en los temas que son importantes”, expresó la Vice Gobernadora Jeanette Núñez, la primera mujer hispana en ocupar ese cargo en el estado de Florida. Como compañera de fórmula del gobernador Ron DeSantis, Núñez desempeñó un papel clave durante la campaña, representando a importantes minorías en la campaña por la gobernación, que finalmente los llevó a reemplazar a Rick Scott en Tallahassee, después de ganar la elección por estrecho margen. Responsable y dedicada en todas las áreas de su vida, Núñez ha estado trabajando en el servicio público desde 2010 cuando fue elegida Representante Estatal para el Distrito 112, que incluía la Ciudad de Doral. Desde entonces, ella ha trabajado para proporcionar a la comunidad los recursos para resolver problemas importantes, como “seguridad y bienestar infantil, que es algo que siempre me ha apasionado tanto personal como profesionalmente”. Madre de tres hijos, una niña y dos varones, ella reconoce el apoyo de su familia como uno de los principales factores que permitieron el éxito de su carrera, tanto profesional como política. ABOGAR POR PROBLEMAS DIFÍCILES Y EMPODERAR A LAS NIÑAS

Las cuestiones relacionadas con la protección de los niños, especialmente las niñas y las mujeres, siempre han sido un foco del trabajo de Núñez. Sirvió en la junta de Kristi House, una “organización dedicada a prevenir el abuso sexual infantil”, y también en la junta directiva del Consejo Estatal sobre tráfico humano. “Esos temas son muy importantes para mí como madre y como legislador, porque creo que son temas de los que no nos gusta hablar, porque son tan oscuros y tan feos, porque es muy difícil entender incluso los horrores que les suceden a tantas niñas y niños pequeños, el abuso sexual, la trata de personas y la explotación sexual comercial. Trabajando en la legislatura, ha tenido la oportunidad de tratar temas que afectan no solo a las mujeres, sino a todos los habitantes del estado, para encontrar soluciones que abran las oportunidades para que las mujeres prosperen y avancen. A Núñez le apasiona trabajar para brindar educación de la mejor calidad a todos los niños en el estado, especialmente a las niñas y mujeres jóvenes, “asegurándose de que en particular las niñas tengan un

entorno donde puedan prosperar y sobresalir”. Explica que trabajar en política, especialmente en Tallahassee o Washington, es más desafiante para las mujeres debido a la gran cantidad de viajes y tiempo que se tienen que dedicar al servicio, lo que dificulta a las mujeres que son madres, o tienen otras responsabilidades familiares la decisión de postularse para un cargo público. Sin embargo, “este año, tanto en el Congreso como en Tallahassee, vimos un número récord de mujeres que se postularon y ganaron cargos”. Los tiempos definitivamente están cambiando y Núñez es parte de ese cambio. “Creo que es importante que las niñas entiendan, y eso es algo que me tomo muy personal en mi rol, que tienen la oportunidad de alcanzar los niveles más altos de cualquier industria, ya sea de negocios o política, siempre que sean apasionados y trabajen duro”, afirmó Núñez.

Núñez considera a su madre, quien a los 82 años todavía trabaja en importación y exportación, su principal modelo a seguir “en términos de pasión y dedicación. Como madre de tres hijos de 20, 17 y 12 años, Núñez ha confiado durante los años en el apoyo de su esposo, sus padres y sus suegros para equilibrar la familia, el trabajo y el servicio público. “Es importante que priorizar y delegar. Cuando eres una madre joven, quieres ser perfecta y que todo sea increíble. Pero llegas a un punto en tu vida donde realmente pones énfasis en lo que es realmente importante. Siempre me digo a mí misma “cuando estés con ellos, permanece presente” porque necesitan tu atención plena e individualizada. A lo largo de sus años de servicio, Núñez, quien pertenece al partido Republicano, ha tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con mujeres de toda tendencia política en temas importantes, logrando resultados al enfocarse en encontrar un los puntos comunes y en aprobar legislación que brinde soluciones para las personas y abra caminos para otras soluciones en el futuro. “Siempre he trabajado dispuesta a escuchar a la gente, siempre he tenido las puertas abiertas. Al final del día, lo que importa es la pasión por el servicio público. Considera que es una mujer fuerte en términos de que tiene una mucha fe y se preocupa por las personas que son vulnerables. “Siempre trato de pensar qué puedo hacer para mejorar la situación de los demás, especialmente de aquellos que no tienen voz. Creo que la fuerza es algo diferente para cada quien, pero creo que la fuerza está en ser compasivo y útil para los demás”.

a Ciudad de Doral solicitará a la Legislatura de la Florida la aprobación de un proyecto que permitiría la revisión de las Asociaciones de Propietarios de Viviendas (mejor conocidas como HOA por su siglas en inglés) de todo el estado, incluidas las que operan en Doral. Según lo explicó la vice-alcaldesa Claudia Mariaca, quien presentó esta propuesta ante el resto del Concejo Municipal de Doral, está solicitud se hará para apoyar a los residentes en su búsqueda de transparencia financiera, el mejor manejo de los fondos vecinales y la efectividad en el control de las comunidades. “Fue una propuesta aprobada unánimemente por todos los miembros del Concejo Municipal, quienes estamos de acuerdo en hacer esta solicitud a la Legislatura de la Florida, tomando muy en cuenta que las decisiones que se toman en las HOA afectan a todos los miembros de un vecindario.”, agrega la vice-alcaldesa Mariaca. Si esta revisión a las Asociaciones de Propietarios de Viviendas se aprobara a nivel estatal, sería una ley que beneficiaría a 2 millones de hogares en Florida. “En nuestra ciudad el impacto de esta legislación sería importantísimo pues, aproximadamente, el 90% de las 136 comunidades de Doral operan bajo algún tipo de HOA.”. Cuando las HOA no funcionan, según lo previsto, los propietarios pagan un alto precio en tribunales, multas, embargos e incluso ejecuciones hipotecarias. Igualmente, se evidencia un descuido y deterioro en las comunidades y vecindarios que induce a la depreciación de las viviendas, causando grandes pérdidas monetarias a sus dueños. “Creo que estas razones son más que suficientes para solicitar esta legislación. La supervisión gubernamental, las regulaciones, la capacitación obligatoria para las juntas de asociaciones de voluntarios, la verificación de antecedentes y la responsabilidad financiera deben ponerse en marcha para garantizar que las asociaciones de propietarios estén bien administradas.”, agregó la vice-alcaldesa Mariaca. Otro punto importante que menciona la Resolución 19-48, a través de la cual la Ciudad de Doral solicita a la Legislatura de la Florida la revisión de las HOA, es adoptar un enfoque proactivo que evite abusos por parte de quienes dirigen las HOA, controle el poder de las mismas e impida actos de corrupción. También hay que tener muy en cuenta que, cuando las HOA son manejadas por miembros inescrupulosos, administradas por compañías y abogados que faltan a la ley, los daños a las comunidades son irreparables. “Con la petición de esta ley queremos evitar este tipo de acciones realizadas por unos pocos, pero que causan daños a muchos propietarios confiados e indefensos.”. Recordemos que ya, durante el año 2018, el Estado de Florida presentó las propuestas HB 873 y SB 1238, patrocinadas por el entonces Senador Rene

García y luego por el Representante Manny Díaz, Jr., que pretende establecer ciertas regulaciones a las Asociaciones de Propietarios de Viviendas en nuestro estado. Estas propuestas desafortunadamente no fueron aprobadas en ese momento. Por ejemplo, prohíbe a las asociaciones contratar a un abogado que represente a sociedad gestora de la misma; establece que las asociaciones deben proporcionar a sus miembros una copia del informe financiero anual o una notificación por escrito que detalla cómo obtener dicho informe; prohíbe a un oficial, director o gerente de la asociación solicitar, ofrecer o aceptar la prestación de un servicio; así como deben proveer los requisitos y procedimientos relativos a conflictos de intereses, entre otros reglamentos.

¿QUE SABEMOS DE LAS HOA?

La compra de una vivienda dentro de un desarrollo planificado ahorra en gran medida la responsabilidad de mantener su propiedad y sus alrededores. También le permite disfrutar del uso de piscinas, gimnasios y cualquier otro servicio disponible solo para los residentes del desarrollo, sin embargo, estas ventajas tienen un precio tanto para sus finanzas como para su libertad como propietario de una casa. Cuando usted es dueño de una vivienda dentro de un desarrollo planificado, también entra a formar parte de la Asociación de Propietarios de Viviendas (HOA), por lo que debe pagar sus tarifas (que generalmente son mensuales) para ayudar a cubrir el mantenimiento de áreas comunes, estructuras compartidas y espacios exteriores. Al formar parte de la HOA de su comunidad, usted está igualmente vinculado a los convenios, las condiciones y las reglas, las regulaciones y las restricciones de la asociación. Esto nos indican que, para un comprador de vivienda no sólo es importante saber cuánto se paga en un conjunto por el mantenimiento mensual, sino también cuál ha sido el historial de aumentos. Esta obvia importancia de las HOA sobre las viviendas de las personas y sus finanzas mensuales hace más que necesario que la solicitud de la Ciudad de Doral sea aprobada en la Legislatura de la Florida para proteger los bienes de miles de propietarios de viviendas en todo nuestro estado.

According to the internet portal “The Statistics,” in 2016 a total of 209.6 million people in the United States had made their purchases online and had searched products, compared prices or purchase merchandise online at least one time. It is projected that these figures will reach 230.5 million in 2021 positioning the United States as one of the main markets for electronic commerce. Even when one of the main advantages of electronic commerce is that the purchased goods are sent to the place of preference of the purchaser, there are also many internet transactions that make it necessary for the buyer and seller to meet in order to exchange the goods and/or finalize the payment.

And, this is maybe one of the main risks of electronic commerce, after social engineering and identity theft. Taking all this into consideration, SafeTrade was born, a program to help finalize electronic commercial transactions to users of electronic classified ads in a safe way. SafeTrade was launched in 2015 as the result of transactions originated in Craigslist and other sites for Classified ads, that ended in crime and aggression. According to SafeTrade, more than 100 people have been murdered after publishing or responding to publications from Craigslist. SafeTrade clarifies that there is nothing wrong with Craigslist, they assure that this is an ideal site for electronic transactions and that the majority of Craigslist

users are trustable and well-intentioned people; also the incidence of violent crimes is extremely low. Nevertheless, the safety of the users must be of utmost importance, and for this reason, SafeTrade recommends taking certain precautions when doing commercial exchanges that are the result of online transactions. The main recommendation of SafeTrade is to meet in safe places. They explain that hundreds of Police Departments in the United States are offering safe police stations that allow commercial exchanges, limiting in this way the occurrence of crime.

Tomando esto en consideración surgió SafeTrade, un programa para ayudar a los usuarios de anuncios clasificados en línea a realizar transacciones comerciales de manera segura. SafeTrade se lanzó en el año 2015 en respuesta a las transacciones iniciadas en Craigslist y otros sitios clasificados que han terminado en delitos y agresiones. Según Saferade, más de 100 personas han sido asesinadas después de publicar o responder a las publicaciones realizadas en Craigslist. igh school seniors are starting to receive acceptance letters from colleges and now they must make the decision of which offer to accept. After working so hard for this special moment, some students may find the decision overwhelming. However, if you have done your research and applied to the schools right for you then the decision should not be that difficult. The most important factor in choosing a school? Your gut feeling. Yes, your gut. You instinct, the little voice in your head, the way your heart or maybe stomach feel. When you walked onto the college campus, did you feel happy? Energized? Excited? Did you feel welcome? Comfortable? You are going to spend four very important years of your life at a place where you will not only study, but also gain personal life experiences that will define you as an adult. If you choose a school that doesn’t make you happy, you will be miserable. Perhaps not even graduate. This decision making factor assumes that you

have visited the colleges you applied to. If you didn’t, make no decision until you do visit. The college visit is vital. Walk around the buildings, the dorms, the common areas, the cafeteria, the library. Talk to students. What is life about at this campus? I had a future medical student who was accepted at the prestigious John Hopkins University having never visited. When she finally did tour the school - she hated it. She ended up attending Stanford University because it was the right fit for her. Remember, Harvard isn’t for everybody! Many parents will argue that the cost of college is a key determinant choosing a school. Yes, but tuition costs should not be only reason nor the top reason for picking a college. Always start with the academics of the school before looking at the costs. Does the college teach what you want to study? Is it a good program? If it feels good and it’s a strong academic program, then you need to sit down and analyze your financial

Después de trabajar tan duro para este momento especial, algunos estudiantes pueden encontrar que tomar la decisión sea abrumadora. Sin embargo, si ha investigado y aplicado a las escuelas adecuadas, la decisión no debería ser tan difícil. ¿El factor más importante en la elección de una escuela? El instinto. Sí, tu instinto… La voz en tu cabeza, la forma en que sientes tu corazón o tu estómago. Cuando entraste al campus, ¿Sentiste felicidad? Energetizado? ¿Emocionado? Te hizo sentir bienvenido? ¿Cómodo? Vas a pasar cuatro años muy importantes de tu vida en un lugar donde no solo estudiarás sino que también obtendrás experiencias de vida personal que te definirán como adulto. Si eliges una escuela que no te hace feliz, no estarás a gusto y tal vez ni siquiera te gradúes.

Este factor de toma de decisiones asume que has visitado las universidades a las que te postulaste. Si no lo hiciste, no tomes ninguna decisión hasta que la visites. La visita a la universidad es vital. Camina alrededor de los edificios, dormitorios, áreas comunes, cafetería, y la biblioteca. Habla con los estudiantes. ¿De qué se trata la vida en ese campus? aid award letter. Ask for it as soon as you get the acceptance letter. Some colleges post it online before mailing a printout to you. Compare what the colleges are offering you in financial aid. The financial award letter will not show your 529 college plan nor your Florida Prepaid account, but it should show your Bright Futures Scholarship. Do you have any other outside scholarships? Those will not show. Many colleges include student loans and employment in your financial aid package and that is NOT free money. If you are not satisfied with your financial aid offer, call your financial aid officer and ask if they have more aid available. Express how much you would really want to attend their school! If your 2nd or 3rd choice school is offering you more money, state that in the conversation. Finally, do you have any personal situations that could affect your college life? Do you need to be close to home because of family? Not ready to live on your own? Perhaps you absolutely can’t attend a cold weather school! Think about how your current situation will change in the upcoming year and can you live with that situation at the college you decide to attend. Maybe you can defer for a semester or a year before you start at that school. If you did not get into the school(s) of your choice, don’t despair. Perhaps you made mistakes in the application process. It is perfectly acceptable to take your time and try again. Enroll in one of the local colleges and start with some basic courses. Miami Dade College and Florida International University are affordable; offer a variety of courses; and allow for easy transfer to other colleges. Use the time to study and visit other colleges while completing the application process again. It is better to take your time in applying than make a mistake and invest four years of your life at a school you don’t like or that will cost you cost precious tuition dollars.

Reagan/Doral Senior High School is a traditional high school, which offers a Cambridge Program exclusively to our Doral families, helping lessen the cost of college by allowing our high school students to start advanced courses in as early as 9th grade. However, students can already start to apply in 8th grade. If our school is your designated home school and your child shows exemplary academic ability, then you are in luck. We offer this international pre-university program for academically advanced students with a curriculum designed as preparation for college and university honors programs. In past years, we have earned 4 Global Recognitions, meaning that our students were top in the world for that specific subject area. They also received National Recognition, known as Brilliance in the USA Awards, which our school has received for almost every subject. To be accepted, students who apply to the Cambridge AICE Diploma Program are required to have 3.0 GPA in their core classes, passing scores on all state assessments, and 3 letters of recommendation from their core class teachers. If your child meets all these requirements, then they could graduate high school with transferable college credit or even their AA from Miami Dade College due to our partnership with Miami Dade College called Pathways to College (P2C) combined with credits earned in the Cambridge Program. Pathways to College also helps Advanced Placement (AP) students get ahead on their Associates in Arts Degree by allowing them to take selective Dual Enrollment courses, which, once combined with their AP and Cambridge credits, could equal up to an AA from Miami Dade College. This allows students to start completing their bachelors immediately after high school, turning what would be 4 years of studying into 2. This is an advantage not only academically, but also monetarily since an AA is two years of college tuition that you will be saving. Since the Cambridge AICE Diploma Program is the most rigorous program available, alumni return to tell our students how much easier college classes seem due to the skills they learned in the Cambridge Program. AICE stands for Advanced International Certificate of Education and consists of an academic curriculum from Cambridge International AS & A Levels.

If you complete the program, this can lead to your obtaining your AICE Diploma which can replace the Florida Bright Futures GPA and SAT/ACT Score requirements. Our Cambridge Diploma Program will help students make sure that they meet the scholarship requirements, an advantage that not many students are able to have. To obtain the Cambridge AICE Diploma, a student must successfully pass seven exams. Due to our school having 8 periods, 4 classes a day (block schedule), our students can take a variety of classes which allows for flexibility when it comes to choosing their courses. It also allows students to study based on their individual interests and abilities within an international curriculum framework. The Cambridge students become accustomed to the course load as well as what is expected of them as Cambridge students. The first Cambridge AICE Diploma was awarded in 1997 and continues still to this day as an extremely popular option for students who are not only trying to graduate with college credits but are also looking to be challenged academically. As previously mentioned, students who obtain the Cambridge AICE Diploma have a great advantage due to their eligibility for Florida Bright Futures. In 2015, our graduating Cambridge class was made up of 82 seniors, 33 (40%) met the criteria to earn Florida Academic Scholars, 20 (24%) met the criteria to earn Florida Merit Scholars, and 3 (4%) met the criteria to earn Florida Gold Seal Scholarship. The requirements are the 16 High School Course Credits, at least 100 hours of community service, and your AICE Diploma (regardless of GPA or ACT/SAT Test Scores.) That same graduating class of 2015 had 79/82 students earn their AICE Diploma, meaning that 96%

of Cambridge Seniors met the criteria to earn Florida Academic Scholars. Last year, our school had an 100% passing rate for the AICE Diploma in the following subjects: French, French Language, Global Perspectives & Research, Music, Portuguese, Portuguese Language, Spanish, and Spanish Language. In the other categories we received above 80% passing except for in 3 subjects out of 22 total subjects tested. Over all, our Cambridge program has a passing rate of 85%, with 98% of the students obtaining the Cambridge AICE Diploma for the 2017-2018 school year. We are very proud to also be the host for the Cambridge AICE Diploma award ceremony, where every school with a Cambridge Program comes together to celebrate all our students’ accomplishments. l 2019 comenzó con una noticia preocupante en el campo de la salud tras reportarse un brote de sarampión a nivel mundial que llegó a territorio nacional. De acuerdo con los Centros para el control y la prevención de enfermedades (CDC por sus siglas en inglés), entre el 1 de enero y el 21 de febrero se confirmaron 159 casos individuales en 10 estados del país, entre los que figuran Nueva York, Texas y Washington. Ante este panorama, entidades de salud como los CDC, la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos y los Institutos Nacionales de Salud han hecho un llamado a la población sobre la importancia de vacunarse como único recurso para combatir la enfermedad. De acuerdo con Amanda Porro, Jefe de sección de los Centros de Cuidado Pediátrico de Nicklaus Children’s Health System, el aumento en los casos reportados está relacionado principalmente con el movimiento anti-vacunación. “Muchas personas han dejado de vacunar a sus hijos por un estudio publicado hace muchos años que hablaba de un posible vínculo entre el autismo y las vacunas, lo cual a la fecha no tiene ningún fundamento científico”, asegura. Por lo anterior, la pediatra recomienda a los padres documentarse correctamente antes de tomar la decisión de no vacunar a sus hijos. “Cualquier persona puede publicar algo en Internet. Por eso, es importante que se tomen el tiempo suficiente para hablar con profesionales realmente educados en el tema”, añade. En cuanto a las edades para vacunarse, usualmente la primera dosis se puede recibir entre los 12 y 15 meses de vida y la segunda, entre los 4 y 6 años. En caso de que se presente un brote puede solicitarse una vacuna adicional para protegerse. La buena noticia es que en Miami es posible vacunarse gratis a través del ‘Florida Department of Health’ de Miami-Dade que presta este servicio a todos los niños que tengan entre 0 y 18 años. he 2019 began with concerning news in the health field after a worldwide measles outbreak, that reached national territory, was reported. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between January 1 and February 21, 159 individual cases were confirmed in 10 states within the country, including New York, Texas, and Washington. In the face of this, different health organizations such as the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health have alerted people about the importance of getting vaccinated as the only resource to fight the disease. According to Amanda Porro, Section Chief of the Pediatric Care Centers of Nicklaus Children’s Health System, the increase in reported cases is mainly related to the anti-vaccination movement. “Some people do not allow their children to get vaccinated, because of a study published many years ago that connected autism with vaccines, which to this day has no scientific ground,” Doctor Porro explains. Taking that into consideration, the pediatrician recommends parents to get adequately informed before deciding to go against vaccines. “Anyone can post something on the Internet. But I think it is important to invest enough time to talk with professionals who are really educated on this matter,” she says. She also warns that measles can expose some patients to other diseases such as encephalitis or even lead to death. “We all want to think that our child will be the one who does not get sick, but because there is a risk, you do not want to take that chance,” says Doctor Porro. It should be clarified that vaccines must be taken in the order prescribed by the doctor to be effective, as many parents decide not to under the false belief that the body is not ready to receive the recommended doses, which according to the specialist is a myth. Regarding the ages to be vaccinated, usually, the first dose can be received between 12 and 15 months of life and the second, between 4 and 6 years. In case of an outbreak, an additional vaccine can be requested to maximize protection. The good news is that in Miami it is possible to get a free vaccination through the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade that provides this service to all children between 0 and 18 years old.
