na vez más la temporada de lluvias llega al sur de la Florida y este año ha traído más lluvia de lo que esperábamos. Se prevé que tengamos una temporada de huracanes activa. Durante la tormenta subtropical Alberto, me uní al Distrito de Administración del Agua del Sur de la Florida (SFWMD, por sus siglas en inglés) para monitorear los principales canales de las vías marítimas y ayudé a garantizar la seguridad de nuestra comunidad en caso de una inundación, comprobando para ello que los niveles de agua permanezcan a un nivel seguro, con lo cual se mitiga la actividad de la madre naturaleza. Es sumamente importante que nos mantengamos alertas. El Condado de Miami-Dade, SFWMD y yo nos hemos propuesto ayudar a prevenir las inundaciones y proteger a nuestros residentes durante esta temporada de huracanes. Hace diecinueve años, la Ciudad de Sweetwater y el sur de Miami-Dade, vivieron de primera mano la devastación y destrucción causadas por las inundaciones por no estar preparados y planificar con tiempo. En 1999, el huracán Irene trajo 19 pulgadas de lluvia y en el 2000, una tormenta que no tenía nombre, devastó nuestra comunidad una vez más. Gracias a que trabajamos de conjunto con el entonces gobernador Jeb Bush, nuestra delegación al Congreso y SFWMD, pudimos obtener más de $740 millones en fondos para el proyecto integral del sistema de drenaje de las vías, que incluía la cuenca de retención para situaciones de emergencia C-4 con el objetivo de mitigar las inundaciones, no solo en la parte oeste de Miami-Dade y Sweetwater, sino en otras ciudades que dependen de un sistema de canales en condiciones óptimas. El Equipo de Trabajo para la Restauración

del Ecosistema del Sur de la Florida, del que he sido miembro desde el 2002, brinda información sobre las regulaciones propuestas que pudieran afectar de manera negativa los niveles de agua de la parte oeste de Miami-Dade. Por ello, colaborar con el Distrito de Administración del Agua del Sur de la Florida es fundamental para mitigar futuras inundaciones. A medida que nos acercamos a la temporada de lluvia, se han movido las aguas y disminuido los niveles en los canales y las áreas de almacenamiento con el fin de crear mayor capacidad para recibir el agua de las inundaciones proveniente de los drenajes locales de los distritos, municipalidades, residentes y asociaciones de propietarios, cuando llueve. Durante la temporada de huracanes pasada se hizo un trabajo sobresaliente de comunicación mientras las fuertes lluvias del huracán Irma azotaban la región. Gracias a la experiencia de cada una de las partes, pudimos hacer frente a todas las inquietudes relativas a inundaciones, utilizando para ello la cuenca de retención para situaciones de emergencia C-4, un área de almacenamiento de agua en Miami que es crucial para almacenar agua después de una tormenta y disminuir las

inundaciones. Además de estas iniciativas, el condado aseguró fondos otorgados por la Agencia Federal de Gestión de Emergencias (FEMA, por sus siglas en inglés) y obtuvo alrededor de ocho millones de dólares, lo que sirvió de gran alivio en la recogida de ramas y objetos esparcidos por el huracán en las propiedades privadas. Para la temporada de huracanes de este año, el condado se ha estado preparando durante todo el año, dándole mantenimiento a las estructuras y millas de canales para garantizar que estemos listos para la próxima temporada. El mantenimiento incluye retirar los árboles y la vegetación en los derechos de paso de los canales para asegurarnos de que no caigan en ellos después de una tormenta y bloqueen el flujo de agua esencial. Todos, incluidos usted y sus vecinos, juegan un papel importante para proteger al sur de la Florida de las inundaciones. Al ser un estado de regiones costeras bajas, estamos conscientes de la vulnerabilidad de la Florida a tormentas severas, pero si todas las agencias y jurisdicciones trabajamos juntos, podemos poner en práctica soluciones efectivas para mantener la seguridad de nuestra comunidad, en caso de inundación.

Ten Years Committed to Safety

We are the Guardians; a shield forged by truth, valor, diversity, and reverence “ That is the motto of the City of Doral Police Department that since its creation, ten year ago this July, has continuously grown to provide the community with safety and protection. Long gone are the days when the Doral area, then unincorporated, depended on Miami-Dade Police Department for their safety needs; the majority of the current population does not remember what it was to relay on a service that due to distance and resources did not always have the level the community required. Actually, among the main reasons that prompted the incorporation movement that culminated with the creation of the City of Doral was the objective to have a dedicated Police Unit that fulfilled the community expectations. Five years after incorporation, to achieve level of service that the community demanded, the City of Doral Police Department was created. With a current budget of US$ 21,511,871, the Police Department receives 38% of the City of Doral Budget General Fund. The main objectives this year, according to the Budget Document, are to invest in police outreach initiatives and increasing public safety through increasing police presence, high visibility traffic enforcement and revitalizing the aging fleet. Four Chiefs of Police have led the force since 2008: Ricardo Gomez, Richard Blom, Donald De Lucca and currently Hernan Organvidez. Each one of them has had their contribution to the development of the department and their commitment to protect and serve Doral residents has been unquestionable. This is a great time to reflect on the history of the City of Doral Police Department, and there is no better way to do it than talking about the achievements of the force with two of the men who have led it: Former Chief Gomez and Current Chief Organvidez.

Their stories are intertwined, as Chief Organvidez was part of the team from Miami-Dade County who provided contract safety services to the recently incorporated municipality, as was Gomez, who later received the incipient Doral Police Department and began developing the vision as first Chief. Ten years later, Organvidez returned to Doral this April as Chief of the Department and was received with many expressions of appreciation from the community who remembered his previous services.

“IT WAS AN INTERESTING TIME”

Shaping up the vision the council had for the new city’s police department was Mr. Gomez’s first tasks when he was named first Chief of the City of Doral Police Department in 2008. “Once the City of Doral was created it was under contract with the Miami-Dade Police Department to provide police service to our newly created City. I can recall many planning meetings with His Honor, the Mayor, Council and Manager Rascoe. It was most definitely an interesting time because this City was ahead of the curve in trying to provide the best service to its citizens. This was evident with the creation of the most vibrant community policing unit possible.” That phase lasted five years until it was determined by the council that the contract with the County would finish and the department would be operated independently. “You saw the core values remain in place. The City of Doral Police Department continued it renowned service to its schools and local communities” says Gomez. He remembers that school safety and community outreach has always been a key objective for the department. “We have always been on the cutting edge of programs tasked with identifying and address “bullying” and other at risk youth. I can recall Lieutenant Trigo establishing an after school program specifically targeting these children so that they would remain in school and

complete their education. We also implemented a DARE and Great Program; as well as RAD-Kids, so as to blanket our schools with as much contact as possible. This initiative and its comprehensive approach were supported by the Mayor and Council. Naturally it is a financial burden but well worth the investment.” Addressing the “fear of crime” and making the parks and community safer was the next task. They did it by increasing the visible presence of officers in the streets, establishing a motor unit and using technology as multiplier to gain visibility and presence. The vision was always to make the department “a tool to make our Doral community safer and a place where you want to live, work and play.” Gomez is proud of having created the city’s comprehensive security plan “that was mostly paid for by federal grant moneys. I think it was Chief De Lucca who finally got everything working, but I can tell you that overall it is a system that eventually can be on equal footing as some of the great cities of the world such as London and New York. Doral can continue to expand this project especially with the growth of urban hot spots such as City Place and Downtown Doral.” “I was happy to see the department grow. Doral is a vibrant city and is not a bedroom community like some of our neighbors. Mayor Bermudez and the Council have recognized this and are looking to keep pace with the growth of our community.” “It is an honor and a privilege to congratulate the women and men of the City of Doral’s Police Department. Since the City’s inception, they have been on the cutting edge in protecting our community and having the vision of future needs so as to not be caught unprepared. As we all know, we are living in a time in which law enforcement professionals are being increasingly targeted for acts of violence. These women and men venture out daily in harm’s way so that we as a society can live peacefully

and they deserve our gratitude and respect.” “I would also like to congratulate Mayor Bermudez the city’s founding Council and its current council they have been great stewards of this community. No issue has escaped their diligence, Doral’s infrastructure improves daily and its parks are world class. As a small business owner I choose to have my offices here because I believe in this city and the women and men who make up our local government” concluded Gomez.

“THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE THE EFFORTS OF ALL THE PREVIOUS CHIEFS”

Hernan Organvidez remembers the early years providing police service to the newly created municipality that contracted the service from the County. “I was first assigned the Doral Policing Unit as a Lieutenant in 2005 to help Captain Ricardo Gomez provide contract police services to the newly formed City of Doral. It was a very difficult task because Miami-Dade County (MDC) was new in providing contract police services to municipalities.” “The newly formed city had a vision of what they wanted and MDC was not very receptive to change. The City of Doral Council at the time knew what they wanted and they wanted visible police presence in their community. It was a constant struggle to please two masters, the city leadership that demanded services that they were willing to pay for and the county leadership wanted to provide the service to their new customer but did not agree the city needed the level of service they were requesting.

Hernan Organvidez with Ricardo Gomez Those disagreements ultimately forced the city council at the time to build their own police department.” The objectives were to increase police visibility and improve the relationship between the police and the community. They were able to achieve it with a team of approximately 75 officers that over time increased to 100. They implemented a motorcycle patrol unit that helped to achieve the objective and officers assigned to it “took ownership and pride of their city”, says Organvidez. He is very well impressed on the evolution of the department over its ten years of operation. “Now I understand what it means building something with a

strong foundation. I remember addressing the city council and the original officers of the newly formed City of Doral Police Department ten years ago, and telling them they were in good hands and that this city had leadership and vision to make this Department a great place to work. Chief Gomez did an outstanding job building a solid foundation for this department with a short deadline of one year, what an amazing accomplishment! Chief Bloom and Delucca also moved the department forward. I have been given the opportunity to continue the efforts of all the previous chiefs to move our department forward.” “I would like to thank the City Manager and the Council for having the faith in me to move this Department forward, and congratulate all the prior administrations for moving the department forward, but most of all I want to thank all the officers who have sacrificed themselves in making the Doral Police Department what it is today”, concluded Organvidez. The City of Doral Police Department is planning a community celebration on Saturday July 14th at 11am at their facility located at 3719NW 97th avenue. On that day they look forward to celebrate with Doral residents ten years fulfilling their goals of preserving the life, protecting the property, preventing crime and maintaining public order in the City of Doral. Somos los Guardianes; un escudo forjado con verdad, valor, diversidad y respeto”. Este es el lema del Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad de Doral quienes, desde su creación hace diez años el próximo mes de julio, han crecido para proporcionar protección y seguridad a la comunidad. Están lejos los días en que el área de Doral, antes de ser municipalidad, dependía de la Policía de MiamiDade para sus necesidades de seguridad. La mayoría de los residentes actuales no recuerda lo que implicaba tener un servicio que por la distancia y falta de recursos no siempre cumplía con los niveles que la comunidad necesitaba. Más aun, la creación de una unidad policial del condado dedicada, que cumpliera con las expectativas de los residentes, fue una de las principales razones para iniciar el movimiento de incorporación que culminó con la fundación de la Ciudad de Doral en 2003. Cinco años más tarde fue creado el Departamento de Policía independiente. La Policía de Doral cuenta con un presupuesto de US$ 21,511,871 que representa el 38% del presupuesto general de la Ciudad. Para este año fiscal tiene como objetivos invertir en iniciativas de presencia policial y seguridad pública, incrementar la visibilidad y el reforzamiento de la seguridad del tránsito y revitalizar la flota de patrullaje. Cuatro Jefes de Policía han liderado la fuerza desde 2008: Ricardo Gómez, Richard Blom, Donald De Lucca y actualmente Hernán Organvidez. Cada uno de ellos ha contribuido al desarrollo del departamento, demostrando un compromiso incuestionable con la protección y servicio a los ciudadanos de Doral. Este aniversario es un buen momento para reflexionar en la historia y logros del Departamento, y no hay mejor manera que comentar los logros con dos de los hombres que han protagonizado esa historia, Ricardo Gómez, el Jefe fundador y el actual Jefe de Policía Hernán Organvidez. Sus recuerdos se mezclan, pues Organvidez, junto

con Gómez, fueron parte del equipo de policía del Condado que proporcionaba servicios de seguridad a la naciente responsabilidad. Gómez luego recibió el incipiente departamento y comenzó a desarrollar la visión. Diez años más tarde, Organvidez ha regresado a Doral desde el mes de abril como Jefe del Departamento y fue recibido con expresiones de afecto y aprecio por la comunidad que recordaba sus servicios anteriores.

“FUERON TIEMPOS INTERESANTES”

Una de las primeras tareas de Gómez cuando fue nombrado Jefe del recién fundado Departamento de Policía en 2008, fue darle forma a la visión que el Consejo tenía para el servicio de policía. “Una vez creada la ciudad, los servicios policiales fueron contratados con el departamento de policía de Miami-Dade. Recuerdo las reuniones de planificación con el alcalde, concejales y administrador. Fueron tiempos interesantes, porque esta Ciudad estaba adelantada en su deseo de proporcionar el mejor servicio a sus ciudadanos. Esto se evidenció con la creación de la unidad de policía comunitaria más vibrante posible.” Esa fase duró cinco años, hasta que el Consejo de Doral determinó la finalización del contrato con el

Condado para que el departamento de policía operara de manera independiente. “Los valores principales estaban bien fundados; el Departamento de Policía de Doral continuó prestando un servicio de calidad a sus escuelas y comunidades locales”, comentó Gómez. Recuerda que los programas de acción comunitaria han sido siempre objetivos principales para el departamento. “Hemos estado siempre a la vanguardia con programas destinados a identificar y atacar el “bullying” y a apoyar a la juventud en riesgo. Recuerdo el programa después de la escuela establecido por el Teniente Trigo, orientado a incentivar que los jóvenes permanecieran en las escuelas. También implementaron el programa DARE y RAD-Kids, para cubrir nuestras escuelas con la mayor presencia posible. Esta iniciativa y enfoque amplio siempre tuvo apoyo del Alcalde y Concejales. Fue una inversión financiera que valió la pena.” Lo siguiente en la lista fue atacar el “temor al crimen” haciendo que los residentes se sintieran más segura en sus parques y comunidades. Esto se logró incrementando la presencia policial en las calles, estableciendo una unidad motorizada y utilizando la tecnología para tener más presencia y visibilidad. La visión siempre ha sido lograr que el departamento “fuera una herramienta para lograr que Doral sea una comunidad segura para vivir, trabajar y jugar.” Gómez está orgulloso de haber creado el plan ampliado de seguridad “pagado en su mayoría con dinero otorgado por el gobierno federal. Creo que fue el Jefe De Lucca quien finalmente puso todo en marcha, pero puedo decirles que con este sistema estamos a la par de grandes ciudades como Londres o New York. Doral puede continuar expandiendo este proyecto, especialmente con el crecimiento de cascos urbanos como City Place y Downtown Doral.” “Fui muy feliz de ver el departamento crecer. Doral es una ciudad vibrante, no una ciudad dormitorio, como muchos de nuestros vecinos. El Alcalde Bermúdez y el Concejo han reconocido esto y trabajan para seguirle el paso al crecimiento de la comunidad.”

“Es para mí un honor felicitar a los hombres y mujeres del Departamento de Policía de Doral. Desde su creación la Ciudad ha estado a la vanguardia para proteger a nuestra comunidad, manteniendo la visión de las necesidades futuras para estar siempre preparados. Como sabemos, vivimos en una época donde los profesionales del cumplimiento de la ley son con frecuencia blanco de actos de violencia. Estos hombres y mujeres diariamente se enfrentan al peligro para que la sociedad pueda vivir pacíficamente y merecen nuestro respeto y gratitud”, comentó Gómez. “Quiero también felicitar al Alcalde Bermúdez, al Concejo fundador y al Concejo actual de la ciudad, quienes han sido guardianes del bienestar de la comunidad. Ningún aspecto ha escapado de su atención, la infraestructura mejora cada día y los parques son de clase mundial. Como dueño de negocio he escogido tener mis oficinas en Doral, porque creo en esta ciudad y en la gestión de los hombres y mujeres que conforman el gobierno local” concluyó Gómez.

“LA OPORTUNIDAD DE CONTINUAR LOS ESFUERZOS DE JEFES ANTERIORES”

Hernán Organvidez recuerda los primeros años proporcionando servicios policiales a la recién creada municipalidad, cuando el servicio se contrataba al Condado. “Fui asignado a la unidad de policía dedicada a Doral como Teniente en 2005, para ayudar al Capitan Ricardo Gómez a proporcionar el servicio policial a la nueva ciudad. Fue una tarea difícil, pues el Condado apenas comenzaba a proveer servicios policiales por contrato a las municipalidades.” “La nueva ciudad tenía muy clara la visión que querían y el Condado no fue muy receptivo al cambio. El Concejo de Doral en ese momento sabía claramente que querían más presencia policial en la comunidad. Fue difícil complacerlos a todos, a los líderes de la ciudad que demandaban los servicios que deseaban pagar y al liderazgo del condado que quería dar el servicio pero no estaba de acuerdo con los niveles solicitados. Esos desacuerdos al final forzaron la decisión de Doral de crear su propio departamento de policía.” Los objetivos principales eran incrementar la visibilidad y mejorar la relación de la policía con la comunidad. Pudieron lograrlo con un equipo de aproximadamente 75 oficiales que en el tiempo llego hasta 100. Implementaron la unidad de patrullaje con motocicletas, que ayudó a

lograr el objetivo y los miembros de esa unidad “se sintieron siempre orgullosos de servir a su ciudad” recordó Organvidez. Le ha impresionado positivamente la evolución del departamento en estos diez años de operación. “Ahora comprendo lo que significa construir sobre bases fuertes. Recuerdo cuando me dirigí al Concejo y los oficiales originales del recién formado Departamento de Policía de Doral diez años atrás, y les dije que estaban en buenas manos, y que la ciudad tenía el liderazgo y la visión para hacer que este departamento fuera un excelente sitio de trabajo. El Jefe Gómez hizo un gran trabajo creando las bases firmes para el departamento en apenas un año. ¡Fue un logro impresionante! Luego el Jefe Blom y Jefe De Lucca llevaron el departamento hacia adelante. Ahora tengo la oportunidad de continuar los esfuerzos de progreso de los jefes anteriores”, comentó Organvidez. “Quiero agradecer al Administrador, al Alcalde y al Concejo por tener fe en mi para liderar el Departamento, y quiero felicitar a las administraciones anteriores por hacerlo crecer. Pero por encima de todo quiero agradecer a los oficiales que se han sacrificado para hacer el Departamento de Policía de Doral lo que es hoy en día” concluyó Organvidez. El Departamento de Policía planea una celebración

comunitaria para el Sábado 14 de julio a las 11 am en la subestación ubicada en 3719 NW 97th Avenida. Ese día desean compartir con los residentes de Doral la alegría de cumplir diez años logrando sus metas de preservar la vida, proteger la propiedad, prevenir el crimen y mantener el orden público en la Ciudad de Doral. Stimulating International Trade

Mexican businessmen met in the city of Doral The event was coordinated by ProMexico, the Miami Dade County Economic Development and International Trade Office and the City of Doral.

trade mission of Mexican businessmen visited Miami from May 15th to May 17th, 2018 with the objective of exploring business opportunities between Mexico and South Florida and they hold an important meeting at the City of Doral’s City Hall. This was informed by Mr. Manuel Pila, Director for Economic Development for the City of Doral, who stated that it was a great experience to work with both ProMexico and the Miami Dade County Economic Development and International Trade Office and to be able to welcome the delegation of Mexican businessmen to facilitate a meeting with local companies in a spirit of mutual growth and prosperity. “In these international and local trade development moments, it was very important to bring to our city the industry of perishable goods of South Florida and this important delegation of leaders and businessmen of a country that is thriving, economically speaking, as Mexico is doing today,” comment Manuel Pila. This meeting took place in the City of Doral on May 15th, 2018. During the meeting, the following companies were present: Citricos de la Peninsula, Proalmex (La Deliciosa), Sinder, Kishur, Frutticam and Villa Vainilla de Yucatan, also present was Real Vintage from Quintana Roo. Among the products that were presented during the meeting in the City of Doral, we can highlight the extract and vanilla beans that are sold by Villa Vainilla; Persian lime, dragon fruit, habanero chili and green plantain, offered by Sinder; avocado, mango, Persian lime, banana and plantains exhibited by Real Vintage; fruit concentrates for beverages such as horchata, tamarind, hibiscus flower, by Proalmex; seeds and leaves from the Ramon tree by Kishur. Citripens offered citrus and Frutticam offered papaya, passion fruit, pineapple and soursop (fresh fruit and frozen pulp).

The representative for ProMexico added that during the meeting that took place in the City of Doral, six of the Mexican companies (from Quintana Roo and Yucatan), had the opportunity to meet with companies of South Florida that were interested in their products, this helped initiate a very successful commercial and economic trade relationship among them. The offices of ProMexico in Miami are located at 1399 SW 1st Avenue. The main goal of ProMexico is to promote and attract direct foreign investment and the exports of products and services, at the same time that they promote the internationalization of Mexican companies while contributing to the economic and social development of the country, together with the reinforcement of the image of Mexico as a strategic business partner.

Lucia Aguilar Puga, Vice-Commissioner of Trade and Investment of ProMexico for Florida and the Caribbean, explained that another important issue that was discussed during the visit of the Mexican Delegation to Miami, was the consideration of the use of the Port of Miami as the main entrance for products to the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. “We organized this agenda of three days of meetings in Miami Dade County to offer the Mexican representatives

Maria Dreyfus-Ulvert, Trade Specialist for the Miami Dade County Economic Development and International Trade Office highlighted the importance of these type of encounters because they are the ones that promote and stimulate effective and sustainable economic relationships. The objective of the Miami Dade County Economic Development and International Trade Office is to consolidate the position of Miami Dade County as a firstclass international trade zone. “Our strategy is to promote international trade within the worldwide economic

community, emphasizing the unique combination of the County’s assets (its geography, superior infrastructure, commercial climate and access to financial services) to help local companies to access the global markets.” As the representative of the Miami Dade County Economic Development and International Trade Office, Dreyfus-Ulvert explained, international trade occupies a very important part in the economy of our County. She added that it supports more than 100,000 jobs and is one of the main components in regard to business and logistics, apart from being one of the industries with the highest paying jobs in the Miami community, according to a study conducted by Strategic Information Analysis, Inc. The total merchandise that goes through the Miami Customs District (which is number 52 in South Florida) and to the rest of the world has increase in a decade from $65.9 billion in 2005 to $106.8 billion in 2016, according to data from the Census Bureau, this also shows a trade surplus in this customs sector of $7.75 billion in 2016, positioning it as one of the few districts that keeps enjoying of a surplus in the United States. As a summary of the international trade importance of Miami, we can say that the Miami International Airport (MIA) offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean that any other airport in the United States and is the second airport with more traffic for international passenger flights in the country. MIA has a line-up of more than 100 airlines and is the main cargo airport in the Nation, generating a trade income of $33.7 billion annually. As for the Port of Miami, the unique geographic location of our city, makes it easy for our Port to be accessible to the Caribbean and Latin American markets, same as for the ones of Asia and Europe through the Panama Canal.

Empresarios de México se reúnen en la ciudad de Doral El evento fue coordinado entre la organización ProMexico, la Oficina de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio Internacional del Condado de Miami-Dade y la Ciudad de Doral.

on el objetivo de explorar oportunidades de negocios entre México y el Sur de la Florida, una delegación de empresarios mexicanos visitó la ciudad de Miami entre el 15 y 17 de mayo del 2018, sosteniendo un importante encuentro en la sede del Palacio Legislativo de la Ciudad de Doral. La información la dio a conocer el desarrollador económico de la Ciudad de Doral, Manuel Pila, quien señaló que fue una gran experiencia trabajar con ProMéxico y la Oficina de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio Internacional de MiamiDade para darle la bienvenida a la delegación de empresarios mexicanos y facilitar esta reunión con las empresas locales en un espíritu de crecimiento mutuo y prosperidad. “En estos momentos de desarrollo del comercio internacional y local, fue muy importante traer al epicentro de nuestra ciudad a la industria de productos perecederos en el sur de Florida y a esta importante delegación de empresarios y líderes de un país tan pujante económicamente como México”, comentó Manuel Pila. El encuentro en la Ciudad de Doral se realizó el 15 de mayo del 2018 y contó con la presencia de las compañías mexicanas: Cítricos de la Península, Proalmex (La Deliciosa), Sinder, Kishur, Frutticam y Villa Vainilla de Yucatán y la empresa Real Vintage de Quintana Roo. Entre los productos expuestos durante el encuentro en la Ciudad de Doral destacaron extracto y frijoles de vainilla vendidos por Villa Vainilla; lima persa, fruta de dragón, chile habanero y plátano verde, ofrecidos por Sinder; aguacate, mango, lima persa, banana y plátanos exhibidos por Real Vintage; concentrados de frutas para bebidas como horchata, tamarindo, hibisco por Proalmex; semillas y hojas de árbol Ramon de Kishur. La empresa Citripens ofreció cítricos y la compañía Frutticam presentó lechosa, parchita, piña y guanábana (fruta fresa y pulpa congelada).

Lucia Aguilar Puga, vice-comisario de comercio e inversiones de ProMexico Florida y el Caribe explicó que otro punto importante tratado durante la visita de la delegación mexicana fue considerar el uso de Miami como puerto de entrada a los Estados Unidos, América Latina y el Caribe. “Organizamos esta agenda de tres días de reuniones en el Condado de Miami-Dade para brindar a los representantes mexicanos una visión general de las oportunidades de negocios en el Sur de la Florida. La delegación se reunió con miembros del Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami, el Puerto de Miami, HPL Logistics y Sedano’s Supermarket. En total, se llevaron a cabo

un total de 46 reuniones con 17 compañías locales”, comentó Aguilar. La vocera de ProMexico agregó que, durante la reunión desarrollada en la Ciudad de Doral, seis de las empresas de México (de Quintana Roo y Yucatán) tuvieron la oportunidad de reunirse con compañías en el Sur de la Florida que estaban interesadas en sus productos, lo que generó el inicio de un intercambio comercial y económico sumamente exitoso. La sede de ProMexico en Miami está ubicada en la 1399 SW 1 st Ave y tiene como principal objetivo promover y atraer la inversión extranjera directa y las exportaciones de productos y servicios, así como la internacionalización de las empresas mexicanas para contribuir al desarrollo económico y social del país y al fortalecimiento de la imagen de México como socio estratégico para hacer negocios.

Por su parte, María Dreyfus-Ulvert, desarrolladora comercial de la Oficina de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio Internacional del Condado de Miami-Dade destacó la importancia de este tipo de encuentro que son los que impulsan y estimulan las relaciones económicas efectivas y sostenibles en el tiempo. El objetivo de la Oficina de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio Internacional es consolidar la posición del condado de Miami-Dade como un centro de clase mundial de comercio internacional. “Nuestra estrategia es promover el comercio internacional dentro de la comunidad económica mundial, enfatizando la combinación única de activos del condado (su geografía, infraestructura superior, clima comercial y acceso a servicios financieros) para ayudar a las empresas locales a acceder a los mercados globales.”. Como representante de la Oficina de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio Internacional del Condado de

Miami-Dade, Dreyfus-Ulvert explicó que el comercio internacional juega un papel importante en la economía de nuestra localidad. Agregó que soporta más de 100 mil empleos y sigue siendo una de piezas claves en cuanto a negocios y logística, además de ser una de las industrias con los salarios más altos en la comunidad de Miami, según un estudio realizado por Strategic Information Analysis, Inc. La mercancía total que pasa por el Distrito de Aduanas de Miami (que es el Nro. 52 en el Sur de la Florida) con el resto del mundo ha aumentado en una década de $65.9 mil millones en el 2005 a $106.8 mil millones en el 2016, según los datos de la Oficina del Censo, los cuales también indican que el superávit comercial de este sector aduanero ascendió a $7,75 billones en el 2016, siendo uno de los pocos distritos que continúa disfrutando de un excedente en Estados Unidos. A manera de resumir la importancia comercial internacional de Miami, podemos señalar que el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami ofrece más vuelos a América Latina y el Caribe que cualquier otro aeropuerto de Estados Unidos y es el segundo aeropuerto con más tráfico de todo el país en cuanto a vuelos internacionales de pasajeros, cuenta con una alineación de más de 100 compañías aéreas y es el principal aeropuerto de la nación para carga internacional, generando ingresos comerciales por $33.7 billones anuales. En cuanto al Puerto de Miami, es reconocido mundialmente por ser un puerto activo de transporte marítimo de pasajeros y una de las principales puertas de entrada para el transporte marítimo de mercancias. El Puerto de Miami está situado estratégicamente en la confluencia de las Américas, lo que hace que sea uno de los puertos más activos de los Estados Unidos. Dada su posición geográfica, muchas navieras lo utilizan como un punto de transbordo para los fletes marítimos con mercancías provenientes de Asia en ruta a los mercados del Caribe y América Latina.

LBA Academy graduates ready to build a new future

Dear future, I’m now ready.” With these parting words, Valedictorian Thalia Caro challenged her LBA Academy classmates to achieve great things during June 4 commencement ceremonies at MDC North Campus. The charter school’s Class of 2018 appeared eager to accept the challenge – along with the support of their proud families. “I want to study business administration,” said Senior Class President Natalie Orozco, 18, shortly after speaking during the graduation ceremony. Besides earning a scholarship through the Latin Builders Association, Natalie was awarded a “junior director” position on the association’s board, a designation that helps mentor a young person on the road to entrepreneurship. Several students were awarded scholarships from LBA member companies Milner, Hotwire Communications and the Jose Milton Foundation. “I’m very proud of her,” said Natalie’s mom, Suzy Orozco, who was holding several colorful balloons right after the ceremony. “She has many ambitions and she’s going to achieve them because she’s very dedicated.”

Natalie was among 29 students who graduated from the innovative charter school launched by the Latin Builders Association six years ago. Located in Hialeah Gardens, the school is the first known partnership between a professional organization and a public-school district. LBA’s mission is to educate future leaders of the construction industry and related fields, such as engineering, real estate, property management and others. “I want to study business law and that’s the career I’m trying to pursue,” said Valedictorian Thalia Caro, 18, who was awarded a Milner scholarship to complete her bachelor’s degree. With the school’s highest grade-point average, Thalia has almost completed her associate degree through LBA’s dual enrollment program. Thalia confessed to being “a little nervous” as she delivered her rap-inspired speech with phrases that rhymed. The young woman who loves poetry thanked her parents, teachers, school administrators and LBA members for giving her and her classmates the opportunities to achieve their dreams. “If ever in doubt, just shout your name and take a minute to look back and realize all that you overcame to make it where you are today,” she said in her Valedictorian speech. After she spoke, her mother and father cheered from the audience.

“I’m very happy and proud that my daughter has given me this joy today,” said Pablo Caro, a condo maintenance worker from Hialeah who came to the United States from Cuba when Thalia was just 2 years old. “We have made many sacrifices so that she can be here, and we’ll continue to work hard so my daughter can get ahead.” “I’m so excited today, so proud,” said the student’s mother, Lara Caro, fighting back tears. “This is a dream come true, a sign that our sacrifices have not been in vain.” The mood was festive and boisterous after the late-afternoon graduation ceremony. Students and families gathered in the college courtyard outside the Lehman Theater to celebrate the milestone in a young life. Sheyanne Williams, 18, who led the Pledge of Allegiance during commencement, had his parents, younger sister and aunt in tow. He celebrated with them as he reflected on his future. “For me, my next step is to go to college to study my major, which is sports management and get ahead of the game,” said Williams, who dreams of entering the television industry – maybe someday in front of the cameras. “If I can work my way up to that, that would be amazing,” Alexis Williams always knew her son was amazingly bright. But in his last year of middle school, she feared he was getting into the wrong crowd and veering off track. Through a friend, she heard about LBA Academy and liked the fact that it was a small school with big goals. “He’s very smart; he’s headed for greatness,” said the proud mother who lives in Miami Lakes. “What I liked about this school is that they not only taught him academics, they taught him life lessons.” Life lessons were in abundance at Monday’s commencement ceremony. LBA President Eric Montes De Oca encouraged the graduating class to aim high. “Make sure the next steps in your lives will be great ones […] be passionate and heartfelt in all your actions.” LBA Academy Chair Michelle Pradere-Noriega thanked the hard work of the school’s staff and teachers, and above all, of the parents and “abuelos.” Principal Jennifer Jaynes challenged her students to work hard for the things they want to achieve, no matter the obstacles. Ms. [Gina] Terry [assistant principal] and I and your teachers have equipped you with the tools to be successful in any career path that you may choose. Remember what the LBA has instilled in you ‘learning today, leading tomorrow.’” But the day’s universal meaning was perhaps best articulated by the keynote speaker, Miami Dade County Commission Chairman Esteban Bovo Jr., who was introduced by LBA Academy Chair Emeritus Bernie Navarro. The Commissioner encouraged the Class of 2018 to remember those who helped them achieve their dreams and to find ways to give back to their communities.

“Be mindful that your parents have paved the way for you,” said Bovo, turning to the graduating class sitting on the stage behind him. “It’s important to think in terms of giving back to your community and consider – maybe after they make money (he said jokingly, turning to LBA Board members, also on stage) -- public service. “Consider running for commissioner, councilman, state representative, congressman, senator.” “It is noble to be able to give back to your community and the Lord knows we need input of ideas from people willing to move the conversation beyond ‘what’s in it for me,’” he added. “For far too long our community has only looked at ‘I’m only interested in my kind’. But we need folk to step forward and not only think about ‘their kind’ but about future generations.” Before his speech, Bovo spoke to a journalist about his theme of giving back to community, hoping that LBA Academy graduates will become not only the city’s future builders, but the innovators who can guide Miami to a better future.

“It’s our responsibility to leave our community in a better shape than what was given to us,” said Bovo, pointing to some of the city’s challenges, among them “transportation, smarter ways to build, technology, create a foundation that keeps our children, our talent here.” “Some of that is on us, this generation,” he continued. “But before you know it, will be on them to help foster that.” LBA Academy has open enrollment for the new school year starting in August. SAS West Campus Celebrates First Graduation

he School for Advanced Studies (SAS) located at Miami-Dade West Campus in Doral graduated its first class on June 1st. Fifty-Two proud seniors walked at the graduation ceremony at the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts to receive their high school diploma. All of them had received their Associate of Arts degrees from MiamiDade College back in May, obtained as part of their dual enrollment program. All of them are headed to four grade year universities to pursue their bachelor degrees. Opened in the fall of 2016, the West Campus in Doral will host 135 students in junior and senior year for 20182019. The SAS program is a joint effort between MiamiDade County Public Schools (MDCPS) and Miami-Dade College (MDC), where students who qualify and are admitted for 11th grade, have access to dual enrollment classes, with a total college immersion experience, free tuition and textbooks. Dubbed “The Dream Factory”, SAS has continuously being ranked among the Best High Schools in Florida, due to its combined program that include Advanced High School classes and Miami-Dade College subjects, allowing students to complete their last two years of High Schools while attending college level courses that in the majority of cases help them complete an Associate of Arts (AA) degree along with their high school diploma. Mr. Dennis Lindsay, Public Relations coordinator for SAS explained that attending this very challenging dual enrollment program holds many advantages over traditional high schools, starting with the thousands of dollars in savings that represents for the parents to have their children completing an associate degree within the Public School System, as well as entering universities as college juniors. “Another factor in getting an Associate in Arts degree prior to high school graduation is the fact that SAS graduates enter law school, medical school, and doctoral programs a full two years before their friends who remained in traditional high schools for all four years. That means they start to earn salaries i n their careers two years prior to other students” said Lindsay. But the main advantage is “the maturity and opportunity for growth that SAS students experience over the two years that they are full time students on a college campus. The freedom and independence [students have] results in a tremendous personal and academic growth that just cannot happen at any other high school in Miami-Dade County.” Being Miami-Dade County’s Collegiate High School, the program at SAS is very rigorous, offering college courses for students in a campus setting in the mornings and Advanced Placement courses in the afternoon. Traditional

schools that offer dual enrollment courses lack the total immersion component that makes SAS different. “The personal growth SAS students experience is even more important.”

EXCELLENT RANKINGS AND TOP SCHOOLS ADMISSIONS

SAS West Campus students “had a phenomenal success rate on the Advanced Placement exams last year (possibly the highest in Miami-Dade County)” said Lindsay. “The 2018 AP exam results will be available in July and we are expecting similar results. SAS is always at the top of all high schools on the end of course (EOC - State) exams for the courses we offer. Frequently, SAS has a 100% passing rate on the state exams.” The challenging curriculum along with a nurturing atmosphere shapes up SAS students for their future experience in college. There are students from SAS West admitted to top tier colleges and universities such as MIT, Notre Dame, Emory, Cal Tech, Penn State, Duke, Cornell, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, University of Miami and University of Florida.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS

Beyond their academic performance, graduates from SAS are also recognized for their commitment to their communities. This year SAS had two Silver Knight Award winners and five honorable mentions, more than any other private, public or charter school in Miami-Dade County. Among the students from SAS nominated to that prestigious award were two seniors from the first graduating class of the West Campus: Natalia Mercado and Nicole Ayala. Both were recognized at the Doral Council Meeting in May for their selfless service to the community. Nicole led efforts to help people of Ecuador after the earthquake in 2016, and was able to collect 900 canned goods and 600 pounds of clothing that were shipped from Doral to Manta, Ecuador, to help on the relief efforts. She will attend NYU in the fall and plans to major in International Relations and Global Studies. Natalia created the program “Educities” to help educate immigrant families in Doral about the college admission process in America and

also did volunteer work teaching English and Science at an orphanage in Bolivia. Upon her return to the US, she coordinated the shipment of donations of clothing and school supplies for the orphanage as well. A lifelong enthusiast of sports and nature, Natalia is headed to University of Florida to major in Veterinarian Medicine. Preparing well rounded students for their future challenge in higher education makes SAS an excellent option for top performing high school sophomores searching for more challenging academic experiences in a college setting without leaving their hometowns. SAS is located at MDC Homestead, Kendall, North, Wolfson and West campuses. Beware of the Summer Slide!

he summer slide is when a student loses academic knowledge during the three month summer break from school. There is research on the summer slide as far back as 1906 and there is proof that it truly does occur. A higher rate occurs among students with a disadvantaged background – for example, students from poor families lose more reading levels than those students from higher income families. Do lower income families not have the money to provide books to their children? Or do they find it difficult to encourage summer reading? Perhaps it is because children from higher income families more often go to summer camps that provide intellectual stimulation; engage in more family vacations; or simply have more resources available to continue learning. Summer break is almost here and both students and parents are eager for a break. Students will be able to sleep in later and not have to deal with homework. Parents MIGHT be able to sleep in later, will not have to manage homework, and can relax from the string of school-related activities they support. Some students will go to camps while

others will lounge around at home. Some parents add academics to the summer break while others enforce an academic free summer. Which side is right? One particular study found that students fell behind almost an entire month in their studies; that reading was more affected than math knowledge; and that the higher the grade level, the worse the summer slide affect. A Harvard study found that some students lose up to 2 ½ months of math skills over the summer. Studies estimate that when students go back to school, teachers spend almost six weeks helping students re-learn material from the previous year. So, how do we avoid the summer slide? If your students are in a summer camp, try to

find a camp where they are participate in STEM activities; where they learn how to read music; how to follow recipes, enjoy creating art projects; or even creating business presentations. These types of activities help make students exercise their brain and it involves the reading, reasoning,

Cuidado con el “Resbalón de Verano”

l resbalón de verano, conocido en inglés como “Summer Slide”, es cuando un estudiante pierde el conocimiento académico durante las vacaciones de verano. Desde 1906 existen investigaciones sobre la pérdida de aprendizaje durante los meses veraniegos y hay pruebas de que realmente ocurre. Una tasa más alta ocurre entre los estudiantes con antecedentes desfavorecidos, por ejemplo, los estudiantes de familias de escasos recursos, pierden más niveles de lectura que aquellos estudiantes de familias de mayores ingresos. ¿Las familias de bajos ingresos no tienen el dinero para proporcionarles libros a sus hijos? ¿O les resulta difícil alentar la lectura de verano? Tal vez se deba a que los niños de familias con mayores ingresos asisten con mayor frecuencia a campamentos de verano que brindan estimulación intelectual; participan en más vacaciones familiares; o simplemente tienen más recursos disponibles para continuar aprendiendo.

El receso de verano ya está aquí y tanto los estudiantes como los padres están ansiosos por un descanso. Los estudiantes podrán dormir más tarde y no tener que lidiar con la tarea. Algunos padres agregan algo de estudio durante las vacaciones de verano, mientras que otros prefieren un verano libre de cualquier tipo de aprendizaje. ¿Cuál es el lado correcto? Un estudio particular encontró que los estudiantes se retrasaron casi un mes completo en sus estudios; La lectura fue más afectada que el conocimiento matemático; y cuanto mayor sea el nivel de grado, peor será el deslizamiento de verano. Un estudio de Harvard descubrió que algunos estudiantes pierden hasta 2 ½ meses

Este tipo de actividades ayudan a los estudiantes a ejercitar su cerebro e involucran los cálculos de lectura, razonamiento y matemática. Estas son formas divertidas de practicar las habilidades de lectura y matemática simultáneamente. Incluso es posible encontrar historias cortas sobre matemáticas – Sí, existen estos libros.

If your students are not in camp or in addition to camp, encourage reading. Reading 4-5 books over the summer helps maintain the student’s reading level. Use the library for free books! Read early in the morning before the day gets hectic or have them read before going to sleep as a way to wind down. Studies show that just 2-3 hours PER WEEK of a learning activity will fight against the summer slide. Math is always more challenging over the summer. Reading can be a fun activity, but how do you kick back and relax with some math problems? It CAN be done – figuring out how much money is needed for a purchase, how far are you from your destination, or watching El Mundial and discussing how many points scored or minutes are left in the game. Try playing Monopoly or Yahtze. How about a game of cards? And don’t forget jigsaw puzzles. We will be doing all of the above this summer. My daughters will have a weekly visit to the library to continue reading. The Miami-Dade County Public School (MDCPS) system also allows them to have access to MyOn over the summer to read too. They will try art camp and cooking camp for a week or two. I have a box full of arts and crafts. Yes, we will be watching El Mundial! We also have access to the iReady Math and Reading lessons from MDCPS which I will ask them to do just one lesson per day, Monday – Friday. There will be plenty of time for pool, movies, and SLEEP. We strive for a balanced approach at the Leon house so that we can rest but also keep the mind at work.

Intenta jugar Monopolio o Yahtze. ¿Qué tal un juego de cartas? Y no te olvides de los rompecabezas. Haremos todo lo anterior este verano. Mis hijas tendrán una visita semanal a la biblioteca para continuar leyendo. El sistema de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Miami-Dade (MDCPS) también les permite tener acceso a MyOn durante el verano para leer también. Ellos probarán el campamento de arte y el campamento de cocina por una semana o dos. Tengo una caja llena de artesanías. Y Sí, estaremos viendo El Mundial! También tenemos acceso a las lecciones de Matemáticas y Lectura de iReady del MDCPS, en las que les pediré que realicen solo una lección por día, de lunes a viernes. Habrá mucho tiempo para el grupo, las películas y el SUEÑO. Nos esforzamos por un enfoque equilibrado en nuestra casa para que podamos descansar, pero también mantener la mente en el trabajo. Prepare Your Home for Hurricane Season

he summer months bring long vacations and a needed chance to recharge. Here in Florida though, the period from June 1st until Nov. 30 is Hurricane season, and our city and the surrounding area have been known to take a battering from Mother Nature during these times. If you are a Florida resident you have probably come through some truly awful storm seasons and know just what to do to protect your home and property from the brunt of the storm. If, however, you are new to the area, you may not be sure how to best protect yourselves and your property in case the worst should happen. Although preparing your home for hurricane season may feel like a daunting task, these tips will help you get started. Review your insurance policy: Make sure you have comprehensive home insurance coverage and/or special windstorm coverage that will protect you against any losses that may be incurred as a result of hurricane or storm damage. You might also want to invest in flood insurance, even if your home is not technically in the flood plain. Have the number for your insurance company stored in your phone. Seal your roof: Either get up on your roof or pay someone to get up there and check and make sure that it is completely secured and sealed. Right now, before the hurricanes hit, is a great time to replace your roof if it cannot be repaired and sealed properly. Protect your windows. Storm shutters are the best option, so make sure they are in working order; You can also install impact resistant hurricane glass that can resist up to 110 mile per hour winds. Seal around doors and windows with a weather resistant outdoor caulk, and adjust the door threshold for a tight seal. Add new weather stripping if needed. Take Care of Trees: Trim trees and shrubs as soon as you can so the municipality can remove everything before storms roll in. Pay particular attention to branches overhanging roofs, and consider eliminating damaged trees that list dangerously and may be too weak to withstand high winds. (Don’t pile loose debris on the curb after a hurricane watch or warning has been issued.) Secure items outside of your home: Scan your yard and bring all items indoors, such as patio furniture, potted plants, bicycles, tools, children’s toys, and anything else of this nature. High winds can and will blow heavy objects around, causing them to strike your air conditioning unit or other parts of your home. If you live in a condo, make sure balconies are clear and check with your building association for further instructions. Lower Your Pool: Lower the water six inches in your pool, add extra chlorine, and turn off electricity to the pool pump. Make a written and photographic inventory of your property: You don’t have to list every single thing that you own—but do make a note of your big items, like computers, appliances, and anything else expensive or particularly precious to you. You will want to know exactly how much these things are worth, just in case you have to replace them. The best way for residents to make their families and homes safe is to be prepared before a disaster happens.

When you’re under the influence of marijuana and you choose to get behind the wheel, you know it’s wrong.” So begins a new ad campaign ‘Drive Baked, Get Busted’ from The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, intended to discourage people from getting behind the wheel after they have smoked or consumed marijuana. The campaign was requires as part of Florida’s new medical marijuana law. The Florida Legislature set aside $5 million for the campaign in the 2017-18 fiscal year budget with the goal to educate Floridians about the dangers of impaired driving and promote awareness of impaired driving laws. The priority of the campaign is to make clear and direct links to the negative consequences for marijuana-impaired driving in a memorable and conversational way to create true behavior change. The primary target market for the campaign is motorists ages 18-34. The secondary target market is motorists age 55-74.

The law which mandated the ad campaign also requires the department to establish baseline data on the number of marijuana-related citations, crashes and traffic arrests, and marijuana-related traffic fatalities. Baseline crash, citation and campaign data will be tracked annually. DHSMV will update the information included within the official Florida Driver License Handbook to ensure new drivers are educated on the dangers

of marijuana and cannabis related impaired driving.

Así inicia la nueva campaña publicitaria ‘Drive Baked, Get Busted’ del Departamento de Seguridad Vial y Vehículos Motorizados de la Florida (DHSMV, por sus siglas en ingles), para disuadir a las personas de ponerse detrás del volante después de haber fumado o consumido marihuana. La campaña fue requerida como parte de la nueva ley de marihuana medicinal de la Florida. La Legislatura de la Florida destinó $ 5 millones para esta campaña en el presupuesto del año fiscal 2017-18 con el objetivo de educar a los conductores sobre los efectos de manejar bajo la influencia de la marihuana y las consecuencias de manejar drogado. La prioridad de la campaña ‘Drive Baked, Get Busted’ es establecer vínculos claros y directos con las

consecuencias negativas por conducir intoxicado por la marihuana de una manera memorable y conversacional para crear un verdadero cambio de comportamiento. La campaña esta orientada principalmente a los conductores entre 18 y 34 años. El mercado objetivo secundario esta destinado a los conductores entre 55 y 74 años. Los datos serán evaluados anualmente. Además, el DHSMV deberá actualizar la información incluida en el Manual oficial de la licencia de conducir de la Florida para garantizar que los nuevos conductores estén informados sobre los peligros de la marihuana y el manejo relacionado con el cannabis.

There are many drugs that can affect a person’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, including marijuana. If you are taking medication, check the label for warnings prior to driving. If you are not sure if it is safe to take the drug and drive, ask a doctor or pharmacist about any side effects.

Construction begins at Downtown Doral Charter Upper School

he educational offering at Miami’s premier town center, Downtown Doral, is growing with the 6-12 grade Downtown Doral Charter Upper School (DDCUS) now under construction. The milestone was commemorated with a community event that engaged more than 300 dignitaries, parents, students, and teachers. Special guests included the City of Doral Vice Mayor Ana-Maria Rodriguez, Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, and Councilwoman Christi Fraga. “Our graduates, fully bilingual and globally aware, will be uniquely equipped to excel and lead,” said Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg, Head of School at Downtown Doral Charter Schools. “The educational experience at DDCUS will prepare them for college and the world.” Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School (DDCES), the first of the Downtown Doral Charter Schools was established in 2015 and is the main feeder school for DDCUS students. DDCES has an A-rating since its inception, is a top five school among all public and charter elementary schools in Miami-Dade Public Schools, and is a leading school in the City of Doral.

DDCUS will offer a similar dual-language program to that of DDCES whose students have a choice of two tracks: Spanish or Portuguese. In addition, math, science and social studies are also taught in both English and the foreign language. experience and ready to develop as professionals and global leaders in the 21st century. “After witnessing first-hand, the tremendous success of the program at DDCES, learning that this initiative will now expand to the middle and high school levels is nothing short of great news for everyone involved in education in Miami, and particularly, for the children and their families,” said Federico Alonso Alonso from the Spanish Education Office, Spanish Consulate, Miami. “Quality dual language classes like the ones offered at the Downtown Doral Charter schools will educate students to be bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. EL ÉXITO, MÉTODO Y RÁPIDO FEEDBACK

Ganó el premio Expedia Insider Select en 2014, a un año de abrir. Tienen, según sus estadísticas, las mejores tarifas y números de ocupación en Florida; son uno de los más recomendados por portales de prestigio como Tripadvisor, Booking, Expedia, Google. Todo el listado anterior es, en parte, consecuencia de un método y una disciplina de trabajo, de los que su director tiene mucho que ver. Zarikian relata que cuando EB comenzó como negocio en Estados Unidos se dieron cuenta que muchos hoteles en este país no utilizaban el “Método Edwards Deming”, el padre la calidad total y el mejoramiento continuo. La filosofía Deming establece como esencia que el dueño de los procesos es la persona que está a cargo de hacer la tarea, los trabajadores. Otra filosofía es entender que los dueños del negocio son los clientes. “Solo si el cliente te pide algo en contra de la ética y la moral es cuando hay que tomar una posición”. Por otro lado, las redes sociales son fundamentales para un negocio hoy en día; la opinión del cliente es la que a diario revisa el equipo de managers de EB para aplicar correctivos o potenciar aciertos. “Revisamos

todos los reviews en los que se publican las experiencias de los clientes. Si hay alguna tendencia de que algo no va bien, somos rápidos en atacar el problema, en menos de 24 horas el cliente tiene una respuesta”, dice Zarikian.

SABER MANEJAR LA COMPETENCIA

En Venezuela se conoce la Cadena Hotelera Eurobuilding por ser la más prominente, pero en EEUU “somos una gota de agua en un océano”, detalla el director del hotel para quien la única manera de hacer la diferencia es con “un servicio espectacular”. Esto ha hecho posible su competencia frente a cadenas hoteleras poderosas: Pulman, Marriot, Sheraton, Hilton o Crowne Plaza. “Son monstruos corporativos y nosotros tenemos mejor tarifa y ocupación”, recalca. El grupo hotelero Eurobuilding supo desde el principio que la competencia es uno de los principales factores a considerar a la hora de abrir un negocio en los Estados Unidos. “En Venezuela Eurobuilding Express es uno de los 2 hoteles al lado del Aeropuerto Internacional de Maiquetía, aquí en los Estados Unidos los errores cuestan, alrededor del aeropuerto hay más de 125 hoteles. ¿Qué hicimos? Ofrecer calidad de servicio y respuestas rápidas de mejora: el promedio de nuestras quejas es el 0,8 %, es decir, de 200 visitas 2 huéspedes tendrán un inconveniente, mientras que los hoteles comúnmente manejan entre el 2 y el 5% de quejas; tener menos del 1% es excepcional”, detalla Zarikian. EB ha demostrado a inversionistas de Estados Unidos

que no es necesario ahorcar a la industria pequeña para ser exitosos. Zarikian declara que muchas grandes cadenas hoteleras compran hoteles pequeños e imponen sus métodos de puntos, para ofrecer días de alojamiento en cualquiera de los hoteles adquiridos, pero agrega que eso busca aniquilar la competencia. Para EB Miami “el eslabón básico de la economía norteamericana son los pequeños negocios, se trata de un ecosistema que hay que permitir que siga funcionando, eso genera más oportunidades de empleos. Demostrar que una marca independiente, como lo es EB, puede subsistir y progresar es sin duda un aporte al suelo norteamericano”. El grupo hotelero Eurobuilding tiene planes de expansión: están en Venezuela, EEUU, Argentina y ahora en Ecuador, pero buscan nuevas oportunidades “en Medellín, en Perú y Detroit”. El director del EB Hotel opina que la ventaja más grande de Estados Unidos es la estabilidad económica. “Los cambios no se dan como un péndulo lo que permite adaptarse, aprender cómo funciona la economía y crecer con ella. Si una economía es volátil eso complica, es como aprender a bailar tango y de repente te ponen una salsa”. Para Zarikian dirigir un grupo hotelero demanda un talento excepcional. “En Estados Unidos tomar decisiones, gerenciar y luego gestionar una marca es retador”. La industria es el eslabón principal del poderío de un país, es un pensamiento básico del director de EB: “imagina un terreno que no tenga nada y luego consiguen un mineral, ahí nace la industria que atrae personas y servicios, mientras más productivo sea un país, más va a requerir de servicios como el hotelero, aunque los hoteles también se les considera una industria dentro del turismo. Miami es turismo y por eso estamos aquí”.

l verano significa diversión: vacaciones escolares y largos días de ocio llenos de salidas familiares al aire libre, comidas al aire libre y aventuras. Even though they’re part of your family, only you know whether or not they’ll enjoy traveling. Here are a few cons you need to consider before making your decision: • Accommodations may be more difficult to obtain since some hotels, and bedand-breakfast establishments don’t allow them. • Your pet might get car sick when traveling for long periods of time. • You’ll need to pack extra items for your pet, so if you’re concerned about having enough room for everything your family needs, it could get quite cramped in the car. • You’ll need to stop more often to take your dog on walks, but this could also be an advantage for the family that has been sitting in the car for hours. • If you want to go into a restaurant or other place that doesn’t allow animals, your pet will be stuck in the car. This is dangerous during the hot summer months. • If you’re flying, your pet might feel stress from being in the confined space. • You may have to pay extra fees for your pet at certain parks or other vacation spots. If you decide to take your pet, follow these tips: • Make sure the hotels you book are pet friendly. There may be a fee or deposit for travelers with pets. • Before you go on vacation, have your animal treated for fleas to prevent infestation in your car and the hotels where you stop. • Before you go into any park, restaurant, or other venue, ask about their pet policy. • Avoid leaving your animal alone in the room for extended periods of time. If you do this, why bother bringing him on vacation? You don’t want your dog to start barking and annoy other vacationers or business travelers. • Have plenty of toys to entertain your pet so he doesn’t chew on the furniture or other items belonging to the hotel. • If you bring your cat, keep the litter pan clean to prevent smells from wafting down the hall and into other rooms. • Keep your animal restrained at all times when you are out of your room. • Take your dog out right before bedtime and when he first gets up so he can relieve himself. You want to do everything possible to prevent accidents in the hotel room. Walk your dog in areas that are designated specifically for that. Pick up after him and dispose of the waste in a responsible manner. • Taking your animals on vacation comes with an extra set of responsibilities. How The Work Rules Work for You

etirement doesnâ€™t have the same meaning for everyone. Some people plan to retire and never work again. Some people plan for second careers in occupations that wouldnâ€™t have adequately supported their families, but they do the work for pure enjoyment. Some people, whether by design or desire, choose to work part-time or seasonally to supplement their retirement income. Retirees (or survivors) who choose to receive Social Security benefits before they reach full retirement age (FRA) and continue to work have an earnings limit. In 2017, the annual earnings limit was $16,920 for those under FRA the entire calendar year. In 2018, it is $17,040. If you earn over the limit, we deduct $1 from your Social Security monthly benefit payment for every $2 you earn above the annual limit. In the calendar year you reach FRA, which you can check out at www. socialsecurity.gov/planners/ re t i re / a g e i n c re a s e . h t m l , you have a higher earnings limit. Additionally, we will only count earnings for the months prior to FRA. In 2017, the limit was $44,880. In 2018, it is $45,360. In the year of FRA attainment, Social Security deducts $1 in benefits for every $3 you earn above the limit. There is a special rule that usually only applies in your first year of receiving retirement benefits. If you earn more than the annual earnings limit, you may still receive a full Social Security payment for each month you earn less than a monthly limit. In 2018, the monthly limit is $1,420 for those who are below FRA the entire calendar year. The 2018 monthly limit increases to $3,780 in the year of FRA attainment. Once you reach FRA, you no longer have an earnings limit, and we may recalculate your benefit to credit you for any months we withheld your benefits due to excess earnings. This is because your monthly benefit amount is calculated based on a reduction for each month you receive it before your FRA. So, if you originally filed for benefits 12 months before your FRA, but earned over the limit and had two months of Social Security benefits withheld, we will adjust your ongoing monthly benefit amount to reflect that you received 10 months of benefits before your FRA, and not 12. Most people understand that if they work while receiving benefits before FRA, their benefit may be reduced. What most people do not consider in their retirement planning is that we recalculate your Social Security monthly benefit at FRA to credit you for Social Security benefit payments withheld due to earnings over the limit. Explaining the earnings limit is another way that Social Security helps secure your today and tomorrow. Understanding both the earnings limit and the possible recalculation of your ongoing Social Security benefits will provide an additional perspective on retirement for you to consider.

Mind Body Social and Publix have honored moms from our community with an amazing series of wellness events in Downtown Doral throughout the entire month of May. Some of the activities included a meditation workshop with Eli Bravo, baby & me yoga, cooking demos, prenatal yoga and a mommy and me workout, hosted by Zuleyka Rivera from Un Nuevo Dia in Telemundo and the Despacito video, and Jen Herrera & Johanna Gomez from NBC Six In The Mix.
