he fifth edition of eMerge Americas wrapped up in Miami Beach on April 24th and it is still making waves, as Armando Christian Perez “Pitbull” announced his sponsorship for a month-long coding competition at the end of the conference; the objective of the competition is to foster the development of apps that support the processes of the music industry. Founded in 2014 by Manny Medina, entrepreneur in the IT infrastructure and cybersecurity industry, eMerge Americas has evolved to become a worldwide reference event about technology and innovation. The event is divided into six tracks of conferences and experiences: eMerge Stage, where industry experts present the latest technologies in the market; eGOV or Government Innovation Summit, where government officials and business leaders present the transformative effects that technology has created in their communities; WIT or Women, Innovation and Technology is the stage where expert women leaders from the technology

businesses showcase their innovations; Launchpad is where innovators introduce their ideas and inventions and also listen to investors interested in the future of technology; Texpert is where attendees learn from industry experts about best practices on latest technologies through highly interactive presentations. The last stage in the event is the Startup Showcase. It is the golden opportunity for emerging entrepreneurs from around the world to pitch their ideas and products to potential partners and investors, while competing for prizes. This stage is the heart and soul of the event, where the most incredible ideas have been presented and launched over the years, gaining the support for reaching their next level. This year the focus of many of those initiatives was based on Blockchain technology.

Among the speakers in this edition of eMerge Americas were former Mexico’s President Vicente Fox, U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo, University of Miami President Julio Frenk and Dr. Dennis Hong, Leader of the Robotics and Mechanisms Lab (RoMeLa) at UCLA, who presented the advancements in artificial intelligence technology that has been achieved at his center.

Director Gladys Gonzalez was invited to present the results of the implementation of the Smart City strategy. This year, although staff from the city attended the event, the focus has shifted to consolidating strategic connections that have been created in previous editions. Manuel Pila, City of Doral’s Economic Developer, said that they “did attend eMerge this year and connected with technology companies in the areas of transportation, smart parking, entrepreneurial education and cybersecurity. It was great to speak to young entrepreneurs and exchange information.” “I think it’s a great event for South Florida and I always look forward to making connections and learning about all the new startups and technological advancements.” Pila explained that during the event they had the chance to meet with regional and international institutions interested in partnering with local universities. “It’s interesting how much Doral has changed in the few years since we first participated in eMerge […] that really helped spread the word that Doral is serious about its Smart City process and that it’s a great place for tech companies. The city has continued to invest in Smart City technology and was recognized internationally for its efforts when we received our Smart City platinum certification from the World Council of City Data last November. That is very important, because it puts us on the same map as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Boston and Dubai, and allows us to promote that fact to companies of the caliber of Amazon, for example.” Pila considers that the City of Doral has matured in the technology sector, increasing the international attention. His observations were corroborated on the FIU Economic Study received in November that showed the growth of the advanced industries in Doral. “We now have excellent third-party corroboration that technology is playing a major role in our growth, and that is very exciting. New downtown mixed-use project coming to Doral

The approval of the rezoning of the parcels located at 8600 NW 36th street tries to bring more commercial use and economic growth to this area of the city, which was originally destined for Industrial use. Edda Pujadas, @epujadas

he Doral City Council approved the rezoning of a parcel of 9.3 acres located in the southwest corner of Doral Boulevard and NW 87th Avenue, which is considered one of the most important intersections of our city. This approval was granted with the objective to expand the urban-oriented area around Downtown Doral. After this Council decision, the use of this land, located at 8600 NW Avenue and NW 36th Street, changed from an Industrial-Commercial (IC) use to a Downtown Mixed-Use (DMU). Maggie Santos, Manager of Public Affairs for the City of Doral, explains that this new use will allow the project to include a retail space, services, offices and hotels. The request to modify the zoning of this area was done by the company Doral Court Retail Investment, LLC that plans to build the Mixed-Use project “Doral Square”. By allowing this new zoning, this project can bring the appropriate environment for those that will work in these new offices and visit the retail spaces that will be very close to them. One of the requirements that this rezoning request needed to comply with was to present a Master Development Agreement. This agreement provides a general view of the project, the design requirements, construction phases, landscape, the urban design guidelines, among others. It also requires the commitment from the applicant to provide the Planning and Zoning Department with a Master Agreement specific for signs, that rules the installations of the commercial signs along the project. After taking into consideration the benefits from the rezoning of this area, the Planning and Zoning Department’s recommendation was to approve the change. The rezoning to DMU also provides the appropriate usage category combination to promote a variety of businesses, and provides the support for the infrastructure that can help us bring new tenants from the industrial and high technology areas and that have been identified in the Economic Study of the City. These new industries and retailers will also bring good jobs, with salaries that are based on professional levels and that will also help our city to prosper. This will also help that those that work in our city can also live in our city. As a result of

this, we will have less traffic and therefore a better quality of life. The urban style allowed by the Downtown Mixed Use zoning will also bring a better traffic flow and connectivity as a result of Doral Square, because there will be new streets that will be built, sidewalks for pedestrians, bicycle lanes, squares and transit stops. It is also in the planning to have open areas with landscape to allow for a nice ambiance. The criteria that the City of Doral used to evaluate this application for rezoning was that the change is justified by the recent transformations that our city has gone through in the last years, given that there are areas that are already suitable for the proposed use of land and that the specific requirements for this new zoning are adequate, and guarantee a compatibility with adjacent properties, as it is required by the Land Development Regulations Code and the Comprehensive Master Plan. The approved rezoning is consistent with the tendency for the development that exists today in our city and that encompasses retail businesses, office spaces, residential units, hotels and industrial uses. Maggie Santos states also that this rezoning to DMU will promote the implementation of the Master Plan for Doral Boulevard and will promote policy 2.1.2 of the Future Land Use Element of the Comprehensive Plan of the City. Nevertheless, this will be the first Mixed Use development in our city that will not have a residential component, given that the development program is designed to provide a diverse inventory of uses in order to strengthen the commercial growth of the city and assist in the expansion of the economy of Doral and to the creation of jobs.

“The new DMU use will boost the City of Doral policy that looks after the expansion of this type of zoning around Downtown Doral and will promote a better flexibility to increase activity and interconnectivity along Doral Boulevard, together with a series of activities related to pedestrian use,” adds Santos. It is important to mention that this property is already close by to a series of combined uses (industrial, commercial, hotel and hospitality and residential), to a regional transportation network and to one of the main intersections in our city (NW 87th Avenue and Doral Boulevard), for which this is an ideal location for a Mixed-Use and Commercial Development. It is precisely this tendency to urban developments, cosmopolitan and commercial which has made that the City of Doral is one of the areas considered as an option for the construction of the Soccer stadium of David Beckham and that would serve as the home of the Miami professional soccer team.

Nuevo proyecto de uso mixto para Doral

on el objetivo de continuar expandiendo el entorno urbano en el centro de la ciudad de Doral, el Concejo Municipal aprobó la rezonificación de una parcela de 9.3 acres ubicada en la esquina sureste de Doral Boulevard y la 87 avenida del NW, considerada una de las intersecciones más importante de nuestra ciudad. Con esta decisión municipal, estos terrenos, específicamente ubicados en la 8600 NW con 36 calle, pasaron de tener una zonificación Industrial-Comercial (IC, por sus iniciales en inglés) a Downtown Uso Mixto (DMU, igualmente por sus siglas en inglés). Maggie Santos, directora de comunicaciones de la Ciudad de Doral, explica que este nuevo uso permite incluir en el proyecto a ser edificado en esta zona comercios minoristas de centros comerciales, servicios, oficinas y hoteles. La solicitud de rezonificación fue realizada por la empresa Doral Court Retail Investment, LLC que planea construir el proyecto de uso mixto Doral Square que, al combinar los nuevos usos permitidos, podrá convertirse en un ambiente propicio para quienes trabajen en estas nuevas oficinas y visiten los espacios comerciales con poca distancia entre ellos.

Uno de los requisitos que debía cumplir la solicitud de cambio de zonificación era la presentación de un Acuerdo Maestro de Desarrollo. Este acuerdo proporciona una visión general del proyecto, los requisitos de diseño, fases de construcción, el paisajismo y las pautas de diseño urbano, entre otros. Igualmente, el solicitante se compromete a someter a la aprobación del Departamento de Planificación y Zonificación un Sign Master que rija la colocación de los letreros comerciales. Tomando en consideración las ventajas de rezonificar esta área, el Departamento de Zonificación y Planificación de la Ciudad de Doral recomendó aprobar este cambio. La rezonificación a DMU también proporciona una

combinación de diversas categorías de uso para promover la variedad de negocios y la infraestructura de apoyo que puede atraer a nuevos inquilinos en los grupos industriales y comerciales de alta tecnología, identificados en el Estudio Económico de la ciudad. Estas nuevas industrias y/o comercios traerían consigo puestos de trabajo, con remuneraciones calculadas en base a trabajos profesionales y calificados que ayudaran a mantener la economía de Doral próspera e incluso permitirá que quienes trabajen en nuestra ciudad, también puedan vivir en ella, traduciéndose esto en menos tráfico y menor congestión vehicular y en la consecución de una mejor calidad de vida. Este estilo urbano que permite la zonificación de uso mixto se verá facilitado por una mejor conectividad y circulación en Doral Square a través de la construcción de calles para vehículos, aceras para peatones, carriles para bicicletas, plazas y paradas de tránsito. Igualmente, se plantea la existencia de áreas de espacios abiertos con jardines para crear un ambiente agradable. Los criterios utilizados por la Ciudad de Doral para evaluar esta aplicación de rezonificación fueron que este cambio se justifica por las transformaciones sufridas por nuestra ciudad en los últimos años, que ya existen sitios adecuados para el uso propuesto y que los requisitos específicos de esta zonificación fuesen adecuados para garantizar la compatibilidad con propiedades contiguas, según lo requerido por el Código de Desarrollo de Tierras y el Plan Maestro Integral. La rezonificación aprobada es consistente con la tendencia de desarrollo existente de nuestra ciudad que abarca venta al por menor, oficinas, unidades residenciales, hoteles y usos industriales. Maggie Santos agrega que la rezonificación a DMU promoverá la implementación del Plan Maestro de Doral Boulevard y promoverá la política 2.1.2 del Plan Integral de la Ciudad.

Sin embargo, esta sería la primera construcción de uso mixto en la ciudad sin componente residencial, ya que el programa de desarrollo está diseñado para proporcionar un diverso inventario de usos no habitacionales para fortalecer el crecimiento comercial, contribuyendo a la expansión de la base económica de Doral y a la creación de empleos. “El nuevo uso DMU impulsará la política de la Ciudad de Doral basada en expandir este tipo de zonificación en las proximidades de Downtown Doral y proporcionará una mayor flexibilidad para promover usos activos e interconectividad a lo largo de Doral Boulevard, así como una amplia variedad de actividades relacionadas con el uso peatonal”, agrega Santos. Es importante agregar que, esta propiedad se encuentra cerca de una combinación ya establecida de usos (industriales, comerciales, hoteleros y residenciales), de una red transporte regional y de una de las intersecciones más importantes (NW 87th Avenue y Doral Boulevard) en la ciudad de Doral, por lo que es un lugar ideal para un uso mixto y de desarrollo comercial. Es justamente esta tendencia al desarrollo urbano, cosmopolita y comercial, que ha llevado el nombre de la ciudad de Doral ha ser considerado como una de las opciones que están siendo consideradas para la construcción del estadio proyectado por David Beckham y que serviría de sede para el equipo profesional de fútbol de Miami.

Strengthening values in the community:

he values and fundamental principles of an individual are learned at home, from the beginning, and in many homes it is mainly the mother who instills and strengthens them. Faith, social responsibility, mutual respect and discipline are some of these core values. In this time and place for our world, where the deterioration of many families has caused young people to end up carrying out acts of violence with sad consequences for the communities, it is important to highlight mothers who with their dedication and work educate their children with values and, at the same time, have impacted the lives of many other young people in their environment, living up to the idea that “when you have a child, you have all the children of the world in your heart” and believing that when children and young people receive the attention and adequate examples, the communities advance towards a better future. Lily Hernández de León, Gabriela Cappanera and Ana Carolina Piernavieja represent those mothers who work with their own children and also with other children in the community to encourage and solidify constructive values, with the hope and desire that those seeds they are sowing now will allow the world to be a more supportive, peaceful and happy place in the future.

LILY HERNÁNDEZ DE LEÓN: “PEOPLE NEED A TOUCH OF TENDERNESS”

With a demanding job as a Catholic Speaker and a large family (six biological children and three “children from the heart”, in addition to several grandchildren) Lily de León does not have a free minute in her day. However, she always has time to give a smile and a word of encouragement to those who need it. She works in the Volunteers and Donors Office and as a host and producer in Radio Paz 830 AM. It is her voice that prays the Angelus, sings several of the jingles of the station and accompanies the listeners with her messages from very early in the morning in the shows: Good Morning Missionary, Talking Woman to Woman, Family Wednesday, Central American Territory and the bilingual youth ministry show

Aqui estoy Señor / Here I Am Lord, where her youngest children also participate. Through the radio waves she distributes the message of hope and values of the Catholic Faith to the listeners and through her voluntary work at the Ignatian Spirituality Center (CEI) she collaborates with the “Family Encounters Movement and at the Jesuit Institute Pedro Arrupe, helping to families with teenage children, immigrants and women and as a youth adviser (Youth Ministry). “ In her lectures at the CEI, Lily tackles topics such as “Marriage, Problems of the Adolescent, Coping with Divorce, Family Matters, Single Parent Families Workshops and Elderly Family Members Issues”. These programs are taught in both English and Spanish and families from all over South Florida come to the center to attend; there have been many benefits in the communities from participating on these activities. Her experience as a mother, professional and immigrant has helped her develop her professional activity, through which she carries a message of hope to many young people and their families. “It led me to see that people in our society are in need of a touch of tenderness, of someone that gives them time, attention and support; especially our children.” Lily believes that many children and young people, especially between 10 and 25 years old are in need of attention within their family and that when they are taken into account they are able “to face all the negative things that are presented to them and to make a discernment that leads them to find their vocation and mission in life. It helps their personal growth and development but also produces a domino effect, very positive for the progress of their community.” “I have witnessed broken families that have fixed themselves and now, are dedicated to helping others. I have seen young people who had lost even the desire to live and had thought and tried to commit suicide and are now successful men and women, married, with children

and with a profession; and even more, they are an example for a society that thinks that youth is lost and, now, when they see them, they realize that there is hope, but that hope depends on each one of us and how much we are willing to give ourselves for others, starting with our own family. “ “For all this, I thank God because He has used me as an instrument to bring hope to people, to show them that with love we can collaborate to make this world a better place.”

GABRIELA CAPPANERA: “THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO ALWAYS PUT FORTH THE BEST EFFORT”

Gabriela Cappanera is the mother of three children between the ages of 25 and 16 and, in addition to being a teacher, for ten years she has been the Head Coach and Director of Doral Field Hockey and of Weston Field Hockey since 2017. Having practiced hockey since she was four years old in her native Argentina, when she moved to the US she set herself the goal of developing this sport in the community so that her children and other young people in the community could get to know the sport. The hockey teams are “projects that I opened with a lot of work and perseverance and it has been wonderful”. From the age of fourteen she worked with children and has always loved it. That’s why she decided to become a teacher and currently gives school support from home. Developing the practice of hockey in Doral became for her

a dream that is now a reality in development throughout Florida. She considers that the work she and her team of coaches do with children and teens “has a tremendous value because we offer all these boys and girls a place to meet with peers, to feel safe, to develop physical activity, a place to acquire values and, above all, to generate that sense of belonging that many of us lose when leaving our countries.” In addition to the discipline and passion for sports, Gabriela encourages young people to be perseverant and always give the best of them. “We take our players to all the tournaments that we can throughout the United States, with a lot of sacrifice from the parents because unfortunately” the money does not grow in the trees “. We always talk to the players about the sacrifice that this implies and how important it is to put forth the best effort to justify the time and investment.” Rain or shine the young hockey players train during the week and also the weekends during tournament seasons. It is in those moments, when there is more pressure, that Gabriela and her group work side by side with the children of the team, to maintain high morale and motivation, insisting with them that only with persistence goals can be achieved. This is reflected in an anecdote from the team: “In a tournament, playing the final,” FOR THE MEDAL AND

THE TROPHY “as they say, the game was tremendously hard and nerve-racking since it was almost over and we were still tied. In the last second [...] one of the players threw himself to the floor converting the goal that led our team to be Champion. Everyone crying [...] we entered the court to hug these guys who only had 11 years old at the time. The player who had converted the goal came running, he hugged me and crying he told me something I will never forget: “Now I understand why you put so much pressure on us to play hockey.”

ANA CAROLINA PIERNAVIEJA: “YOUR ACTIONS HAVE IMPACT ON OTHERS”

Ana Carolina Piernavieja has two teenage daughters and works as an insurance adjuster. She is also well known in the Doral community, because she is the leader of the Girl Scouts, the mother of the whole troop, since her daughters have participated in the program from a very young age and she has known all of them for a long time. “I’ve always liked community service and nature, and the scout program manages to merge the two things.” For Carolina, social responsibility is a fundamental value for the progress

of the communities. “I think it is our duty to teach our children to look beyond their own interests, to work for their community and the planet. We have to teach them that their actions have an impact on others, either positively or negatively. “ Throughout the time she has been involved in the scouting movement she has seen the positive influence that the activity has on the development of leadership skills in young women. “Speaking in public can be a challenge for many girls and I feel that they have made themselves heard. After Hurricane Irma, where so many people suffered in one way or another, I felt that the troop was an extended family worrying about helping each other. During the cleanup of our adopted street in Doral, I saw the girls and their parents clean up on a Saturday morning when there are so many other fun options. The happy faces of the girls when they have done a good job are the best retribution one can have when working as a team. “ For these mothers and all the mothers of Doral this is a humble tribute to their great work and devotion to their children and the community. La Fe, la responsabilidad social y respeto mutuo y la disciplina son algunos de estos valores. En un momento histórico y social donde el deterioro de muchas familias ha causado que jóvenes terminen realizando actos de violencia con tristes consecuencias para las comunidades, es importante resaltar a quienes con su dedicación y trabajo educan a sus hijos con valores y, a la vez, han impactado la vida de muchos otros jóvenes en su entorno, aplicando la máxima de “cuando se tiene un hijo, se tienen todos los hijos de la tierra” y cuando los niños y jóvenes reciben la atención y ejemplos adecuados, las comunidades progresan y construyen un mejor futuro. Lily Hernández de León, Gabriela Cappanera y Ana Carolina Piernavieja representan a esas madres que trabajan con sus propios hijos y también con los hijos de la comunidad para fomentar y solidificar valores constructivos, con la esperanza y el deseo de sembrar las semillas que permitirán que el mundo sea más solidario, pacífico y feliz en el futuro.

Con un demandante trabajo como Conferencista Católica y una numerosa familia (seis hijos biológicos y tres “engendrados en el corazón”, además de varios nietos) Lily de León no tiene un minuto libre en el día. Sin embargo, siempre tiene tiempo para brindar una sonrisa y una palabra de aliento a quien lo necesite. Trabaja en la Oficina de Voluntarios y Donantes y como conductora y productora en Radio Paz 830 AM. Es su voz la que reza el Ángelus, canta varios de los jingles de la estación y acompaña a los oyentes con sus mensajes desde muy temprano en la mañana en los espacios:

Buenos Días Misionero, De Mujer a Mujer, Miércoles Familiares, Territorio Centroamericano y el programa de pastoral juvenil bilingüe Here I Am My Lord/Aquí Estoy Señor, donde también participan sus hijos menores. A través de las ondas radiales distribuye el mensaje de esperanza y valores de la Fe Católica a los oyentes y en su trabajo voluntario en el Centro de Espiritualidad Ignaciana (CEI) colabora en el “Movimiento de Encuentros Familiares y el Instituto Jesuita Pedro Arrupe, ayudando a familias con hijos adolescentes, personas inmigrantes, mujeres y como asesora de jóvenes (Youth Ministry).” En sus conferencias en el CEI Lily toca temas como “Matrimonio, Problemática del Adolescente, Divorciados, Familias Parentales, Familias Monoparentales (padres y/o madres solteros, divorciados o separados) y las Personas de la Tercera Edad”. Estos programas se dictan tanto en inglés como en español y familias de todo el Sur de Florida acuden al centro. Han sido muchos los frutos obtenidos de esas actividades. Su experiencia como madre, profesional e inmigrante la ha ayudado a desarrollar su actividad profesional, a través de la cual lleva un mensaje de esperanza a muchos jóvenes y sus familias. “Todo esto, me llevó a ver que las personas de nuestra sociedad estamos necesitadas de un toque de ternura, de escucha, de tiempo, de atención y apoyo por parte de los demás; especialmente, cuando se trata de nuestros hijos.” Opina Lily que muchos niños y sobre todo jóvenes entre 10 y 25 años están muy necesitados de atención y escucha en su núcleo familiar y que cuando son tomados en cuenta son capaces “de enfrentarse a todas las cosas negativas que se le presentan y a hacer un discernimiento que lo lleve a encontrar su vocación y su misión en la vida, provocando de esta manera, no solo

un crecimiento y desarrollo personal sino, también, esto hace que se produzca un efecto dominó, muy positivo en el progreso de la comunidad en donde se desenvuelve.” “He sido testigo de familias rotas que se han arreglado y ahora, también, se dedican a ayudar a otros. He visto jóvenes que han perdido hasta el deseo de vivir y han pensado e intentado suicidarse y ahora son hombres y mujeres triunfadores, casados, con hijos y con una profesión; y aún más, son un ejemplo para una sociedad que piensa que la juventud está perdida y, ahora, cuando los ven, se dan cuenta que si hay esperanza, pero esa esperanza depende de cada uno de nosotros y de cuánto estemos dispuestos a dar y a darnos por los demás, comenzando por nuestra propia familia.” “Por todo esto, doy gracias a Dios porque me ha usado como instrumento para poder llevar a otras personas, esa esperanza que con amor se transforma en una bella realidad, con la cual podemos colaborar para hacer de este mundo, un mundo mejor.”

GABRIELA CAPPANERA: “LO IMPORTANTE ES DAR LO MEJOR DE UNO”

Gabriela Cappanera es madre de tres hijos entre 25 y 16 años y, además de ser maestra, desde hace diez años es la Entrenadora principal y directora de Doral Field Hockey y del Weston Field Hockey desde 2017. Habiendo practicado hockey desde los cuatro años de edad en su natal Argentina, cuando se mudó a los EEUU se puso como meta desarrollar este deporte en la comunidad para que sus hijos y otros jóvenes de la comunidad conocieran el deporte. Los equipos de hockey son “proyectos que abrí con mucho trabajo y perseverancia pero que son maravillosos”.

Desde los catorce años de edad trabajó con niños y siempre le ha encantado. Por eso decidió ser maestra y actualmente da apoyo escolar desde su casa. Desarrollar la práctica del hockey en Doral se convirtió para ella en un sueño que ahora es una realidad en desarrollo en toda Florida.

El jugador que había convertido el gol vino corriendo, me abrazó y llorando me dijo lo que nunca me voy a olvidar: “ ahora entiendo porque nos pones tanta presión para que juguemos al hockey.”

ANA CAROLINA PIERNAVIEJA: “TUS ACCIONES REPERCUTEN EN LOS DEMÁS”

Ana Carolina Piernavieja tiene dos hijas adolescentes y trabaja como ajustadora de seguros. Además es muy conocida en la comunidad de Doral, porque es la líder de las Girl Scouts, la mamá de la tropa entera, pues sus hijas han participado del programa desde muy pequeñas. “Siempre me ha gustado el servicio comunitario y la naturaleza, justamente el programa scout logra fusionar las dos cosas.” Para Carolina la responsabilidad social es un valor fundamental para el progreso de las comunidades. ”Creo que es nuestro deber enseñarle a nuestros hijos a mirar más allá de sus propios intereses, a trabajar en pro de su comunidad y del planeta. Tenemos que enseñarle el sentido de que sus acciones repercuten en los demás, ya sea de manera positiva o negativa.”

A lo largo del tiempo que ha estado involucrada en el movimiento scout ha visto la influencia positiva que la actividad tiene en el desarrollo de habilidades de liderazgo en las jovencitas. “Hablar en público puede ser un reto para muchas niñas y siento que ellas se han hecho escuchar. Después del huracán Irma donde tanta gente sufrió de una u otra manera, sentí que la tropa era una familia extendida preocupándose de ayudar los unos a los otros. Durante la limpieza de nuestra calle adoptada en Doral vi a las niñas y a sus padres limpiar un sábado en la mañana cuando hay tantas otras opciones de diversión menos sacrificadas. Las caras de felicidad de las niñas cuando han hecho un buen trabajo es la mejor retribución que se puede tener cuando se trabaja en equipo.” Para estas madres y todas las madres de Doral alcance el caluroso saludo y humilde homenaje de parte de la gran familia de Doral Family Journal. ¡Feliz Día de las Madres!

Considera que el trabajo que realizan ella y su equipo de entrenadores con los niños y jóvenes “tiene un valor tremendo ya que les ofrecemos a todos estos muchachos y muchachas un lugar para encontrarse con pares, para sentirse seguros, para desarrollar actividad física, un lugar para adquirir valores y, por sobre todo, generar ese sentimiento de pertenencia que muchos perdemos al dejar nuestros países.” Además de la disciplina y pasión por el deporte, Gabriela incentiva a los jóvenes a ser perseverantes y dar siempre lo mejor de sí mismos. “Llevamos a nuestros jugadores a todos los torneos que podemos por todo Estados Unidos, con mucho sacrificio de los padres porque lamentablemente “la plata no crece en los arboles”. Siempre hablamos con los jugadores del sacrificio que esto implica y de lo importante que es dar lo mejor de uno para justificar [el tiempo y esfuerzo].” Con lluvia o con sol los jóvenes entrenan durante la semana y también los fines de semana en época de torneos. Es en esos momentos, cuando hay más presión por el logro, que Gabriela y su equipo trabaja codo a codo con los niños del equipo, sus “chicos”, para mantener la moral y la motivación en alto, insistiendo con ellos que solo con persistencia se logran las metas. any people don’t know that inside the Provident Hotel at the Blue Doral, located on 87th NW Avenue and 53 street (in front of Downtown Doral) they have a restaurant called 5300 Chop House. With a diverse menu, beautiful location and a Happy Hour Monday thru Friday from 4:00pm until 7:00pm. Thursdays is extended until 9:00pm and they offer live music, irresistible for those who want to entertain themselves after a long working day. However, the Hotel management has decided to make some changes in order to attract those customers that visit Downtown Doral and ignore the discreet entrance of the hotel. One of those changes is the hiring of Sigfredo Gonzalez, a well-recognized Chef from Puerto Rico certified by the Culinary American Federation who left the Double Tree Resort and Spa in North Miami Beach to come for the first time to the city of Doral with the mission to turn the 5300 Chop House into a well-known restaurant. Actually, the menu offers a variety of options, from fish tacos, salmon with quinoa and asparagus, pasta, churrascos, but it will be completely revamped. Chef Gonzalez told us that his new dishes will please the most demanding palates with a combination of Latin flavors plated with beautiful technique, dishes like lamb, seafood, mofongo and including tapas with arepas, and Nutella dessert to please the local Venezuelan clientele. “We want to please our client’s requests. We are not afraid to try and venture into new things…… In a kitchen you don’t know everything, whoever says that is lying, we have so many countries, cultures and techniques”, stated the Chef. Sitting in his office with simplicity, told us that most of his 35 years of experience has been mainly in hotels, because they offer more opportunities, like inexpensive lodging, possibility to grow, good salary and recognition. Many people

underestimate the hard work that takes to accomplish preparing dozens of food orders that have the correct flavors, the right presentation and to accomplish it on a timely manner. They only see the final product on their table. “Is very hard, it’s a sacrifice because you work between 12 and 15 hours a day, including weekends and holidays, which implies you miss special days with your family. And sometimes the situation in a kitchen is chaotic, you work under a lot of pressure. But it is normal and you get used to it” Despite the sacrifice, Chef Gonzalez considers his profession is diverse, because when you are in the kitchen you also have to be “a scientist, a mathematician and an artist”. “Not everyone can make you a dish that looks and tastes good. You also have to calculate how many orders you will prepare weekly, or how much food you are going to make for an event. When you are a Chef you are also a Manager”, said Chef Gonzalez. Dressed in his white uniform and watching all the kitchen employees doing their job, Chef Gonzalez reflected on the venture of opening his own restaurant “Borinqueya” in Davie, Florida. The name was a fusion between “Borinquen” (name that also identifies the island of Puerto Rico) and “Quisqueya” (an indian name for Dominican Republic). The project started on the insistence of a Dominican friend, but he backed up right before the grand opening, therefore, Gonzalez had to take the reins by himself, not knowing about the financial crisis coming which affected the country at the time.

“I endured eight years during a very bad economic time (2005-2013). I went further than I could, but it was a big sacrifice. Now days I prefer to work for somebody else, because keeping a restaurant going is very hard, you don’t have days off, you are a slave. When you are the owner you wear all kinds of hats, you are the dishwasher, lawyer, accountant, cook, and electrician….all in one” DFJ - How did you feel when you had to close down after so much work? “Closing it was bittersweet, on one side it liberated me from a heavy burden and responsibility, but on another side I was sad because I had a regular clientele that went there to celebrate birthdays and other events”. DFJ - Do you regret it? “No, I don’t regret it. Despite the restaurant being small, it was a big sacrifice. It’s a hard business to do by yourself. I recommend to have one or several partners” DFJ - What do you recommend for people who has the same passion for cooking? “Not to take criticism personal. If you make a dish that you consider is a work of art, don’t feel bad if 10 people don’t like it, because there are 10 more people that would love it. Everyone has different palates, it’s impossible to please everyone” DFJ - What do you recommend to people who want to pursue this profession? “To make friends with a Chef, visit their kitchen and experience the place. In this field you can always find a job. Always!”

Step Up Your Health, Doral” cada vez va más allá. Lo que el año pasado empezó como una iniciativa para alcanzar un estilo de vida más saludable para todos los residentes de nuestra ciudad hoy se ha convertido en un programa integral de bienestar físico, mental y nutricional. El arranque de “Step Up Your Health, Doral” estuvo marcado por el inicio del reto de un “Billón de Pasos”, en el cual la Ciudad de Doral animaba a todos los residentes a participar para llegar a la meta de acumular un billón de pasos entre todos los residentes de esta ciudad a lo largo de un año. Hasta la fecha, llevamos 233 millones 434 mil 255 pasos. Pero “Step Up Your Health, Doral” es mucho más que esto! Incluye una serie de actividades deportivas, mentales y recreativas enfocadas en la educación, prevención y cuidado de salud. “Tenemos que estar educados en lo que debemos comer para tener una alimentación adecuada, en el ejercicio que debemos hacer y en los cuidados médicos que debemos seguir para mantenernos saludables”, explica el alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez, principal promotor de esta iniciativa saludable.

ACTIVIDADES EN MAYO

Para mantener a los residentes motivados en las actividades deportivas y recreacionales, mensualmente, la Ciudad de Doral desarrolla un cronograma de eventos gratuitos para que toda la comunidad pueda participar en ellos. El calendario de eventos del mes de mayo empezó con clases de pilates y nutrición en la sede de la alcaldía de Doral y luego, el 5 de mayo hubo actividades de meditación en el Morgan Levy Park, donde también hubo un espacio para el esparcimiento de los más pequeños con clases de Fit Kids. Las actividades de “Step Up Your Health, Doral” continúan el 9 de mayo con “Baby + Me Yoga” de 9:30 am hasta las 10:30 de la mañana, clases prenatales de yoga de 5:30 pm a 6:30 pm y “Mindfulness Meditation” de 6:30 pm a 7:30 de la noche. Todos estos eventos se desarrollarán en la sede de la alcaldía y tienen una capacidad de 30 personas por cada sesión.

El 10 y el 24 de mayo habrá clases de Cardio Kickboxing desde las 6:30 pm hasta las 7:30 de la noche en el Doral Legacy Park. El 16 de mayo hay un fenomenal espacio para madres e hijos, Mommy & Me Workout que será de 06:30 a 08:00 de la noche en el Downtown Doral Park. En la alcaldía habrá “Workouts + Snacks Workshop”, el 30 de mayo de 6:30 pm hasta las 7:30 de la noche. Este evento tendrá una capacidad para 40 personas. Mientras que, el 31 de mayo habrá una actividad de desarrollo de habilidades comunicativas a las 06:30 de la tarde en el Doral Legacy Park. Todas las opciones ofrecidas dentro del programa “Step Up Your Health, Doral” no podrían llevarse a cabo sin la colaboración que la Ciudad de Doral recibe de sus socios comunitarios: Sergios Restaurant, CycleBar, Elite Power, FierceFit, Giardino Gourmet Salads, Intercontinental at Doral Miami, Norwegian Cruise Line, Rilion Gracie, Runners Co. y Shape Lovers. Para el desarrollo de estas actividades, la ciudad cuenta con 7 parques, operados y mantenidos por el Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Doral. En estos parques hay centros comunitarios, canchas deportivas artificiales iluminadas, canchas de básquetbol, canchas de tenis, canchas de voleibol, senderos para bicicletas, senderos para trotar, estaciones de ejercicios, centros de bateo, áreas de juegos sombreadas, espacios para mascotas y pabellones cubiertos disponibles para el alquiler. El más grande de los parques de nuestra ciudad

es el Doral Central Park. Tiene 82 acres, es sede de grandes eventos como EGGstravaganza y la celebración del Día de la Independencia y tiene amplios espacios verdes y hermosas vistas al lago. El Doral Legacy Park es el más nuevo y tiene una amplia variedad de espacios deportivos y culturales. Doral Meadow Park es el centro de reunión preferido de las ligas deportivas juveniles y adultas y un sitio ideal para la práctica deportiva. , este parque tiene algo para todos. Downtown Doral Park está junto al frente de la alcaldía y abarca tres acres en pleno centro de la ciudad y es ideal para paseos familiares. Morgan Levy Park es popular por sus campos de fútbol muy populares y es uno de los preferidos de los residentes. El Trails & Tails Park, terminado en 2012, tiene ocho acres y es la primera instalación para perros de Doral. Las áreas pequeñas y grandes para perros sin correa ofrecen a los residentes la oportunidad de jugar a la pelota o correr con sus mascotas. El Parque de Veteranos honra a nuestros veteranos por su dedicación y sacrificio en la defensa de nuestras libertades. Congratulations! You’re Accepted, but WAIT!

ast year I had a very confused student. He had been accepted into his top college choice – a public university in upstate Florida. Despite being accepted, he was not allowed to take courses at the campus his first year. He had to choose from online courses, study abroad, or take classes at another public college and then transfer his credits. He would not be allowed to live on campus nor participate in any campus activities until his sophomore year. Several public universities in Florida are extremely popular for their low tuition, quality academic programs, proximity to home, and active student life. The universities want to accept as many students as possible, but they can’t accommodate them all. Particularly, freshman year. Sophomore year is easier because not all freshman will continue so in the second year there are seats available. So much so that some universities will accept extra freshman knowing that they won’t have room for them until sophomore year 2. The student, his parents, and I sat down to review the options. l año pasado tuve un estudiante muy confundido. Había sido aceptado en su mejor opción universitaria: una universidad pública en el estado de Florida. A pesar de ser aceptado, no se le permitió tomar cursos en el campus en su primer año. Tuvo que elegir entre cursos en línea, estudiar en el extranjero o tomar clases en otra universidad pública y luego transferir sus créditos. No se le permitiría vivir en el campus ni participar en actividades del campus hasta su segundo año. Varias universidades públicas en Florida son extremadamente populares por su baja matrícula, programas académicos de calidad, proximidad al hogar y vida estudiantil activa. his freshman year. He voiced concerns at not being able to come home for the weekend. Again, I agreed. I encouraged him to take classes abroad if he could or perhaps a semester, but not his freshman year. Freshman year is the first time that you are going to live on your own and discover who you are as a young adult. Living so far away from home and family is much harder on some students than others. He felt he simply wasn’t ready to do that. Begrudgingly, he saw his third option as his only choice. He would take some courses at a local college that was good, but not his top choice. He could live comfortably at home, but not enjoy life at an exciting university. We worked closely with both colleges to make sure that the courses he chose would easily transfer. We carefully reviewed his financial aid offerings and how he could use it toward both schools. Although he had a plan, he felt disappointed by the options his top school had given him. Upon completing his first semester locally, I asked his parents how he was doing. They told me he was doing great in his classes, had met so many new friends, was very happy, and felt he had made the right choice. In fact, he decided to stay in Miami. Do not be surprised if you are accepted to a college that offers you something similar. In many cases, there is simply no way around it. You have to accept one of the offers they extend to you so that you could eventually attend. Always have several other colleges that although not top choice, you would also be happy to attend. Consider your options carefully and make a decision and stick to it. The value of your degree is measured by the work you put into learning- not necessarily by the name of the school.

This Year, Give Mom the Gift of Time

t’s May, and in schools all over the country children are putting into words and pictures, sometimes with the aid of glitter, poster paint, colored macaroni and the like, just how much their mothers mean to them. On the second Sunday in May, many mothers will be treated to breakfast in bed, dinner at a local restaurant, flowers, candy, toiletries, and all manner of handmade gifts and cards. Moms are clearly appreciated, but do children really understand how much their mothers do for them? In 1920, less than a quarter of American women age 16 and over were gainfully employed. For most women during that period, “home housekeeper” was a full-time job. Today, on the other hand, over three-quarters of mothers of school-aged children are gainfully employed in addition to raising their kids and maintaining a home for them. Modern moms seem to “do it all!” Most children understand the concept of work: getting paid in exchange for performing certain services for an employer. They may know that Mom is a registered nurse, a florist, a teacher, or a clerk in a grocery store. They may understand that she has education, training, skills and experience which enable her to take on these responsibilities. What’s harder for kids to understand is that raising children and maintaining a home is “work” as well. Time is money, and if Mom wasn’t doing all that she does, somebody else would have to be paid to do it for her! This year, how about trying a little game to help your kids put a dollar value on Mom’s contributions to their care and feeding?

Have kids list the things that Mom does for the family. Some suggestions: • making meals • doing laundry • driving • helping with homework • reading stories • shopping for food and other necessities. Now estimate the amount of time spent on these activities. Use the same time period (for example, one week) to calculate each activity. So if Mom spends an average of two hours per day making meals, that’s 14 hours per week. If she spends an hour each school night helping with homework, that’s five hours per week. Add everything up to get a total number of hours. Discuss what mom’s “salary” should be. There are several ways you could figure this: • Use mom’s current hourly wage if she’s employed outside the home. • Use the current federal minimum wage of $7.25. • Use your state’s minimum wage, which might be different from the Federal rate.

Depending on their ages, they might help with meal preparation, run errands, or drive a younger sibling to an after-school activity. Or perhaps they’d like to offer an added service, such as giving Mom a backrub or reading her a story for a change. Kids may whine about chores, but really they enjoy being able to contribute something of value to others. They’ll learn a valuable lesson about money, and also a lesson about family togetherness, which no amount of money can buy.

on las copas de champaña a lo alto, decenas de personas se congregaron en el Hotel Hilton Garden Inn para brindar por el lanzamiento oficial del libro Marketing Magic, escrito por el presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de Doral, Manny Sarmiento. En el evento, donde resaltaron los colores amarillo y negro en alusión al libro, Sarmiento firmó decenas de ejemplares y posó para las fotos con una amplia sonrisa, mientras sus amigos hacían fila para inmortalizar el momento uno a uno. Minutos después, y visiblemente conmovido,Sarmiento ofreció un breve discurso de agradecimiento a los presentes por apoyarlo en este proyecto que inició hace dos años, y que finalmente se materializó en 130 paginas que exponen 109 ideas para emprender u optimizar un negocio utilizando estrategias de mercadeo digital. Para hablar de ello, nuestro encuentro lo programamos un día antes del agasajo en las oficinas de Doral Chamber of Commerce. En uno de los salones donde imparten los cursos de mercadeo, nos sentamos a solas con el libro sobre la mesa para comenzar la entrevista, pero Sarmiento no resistió la tentación de enseñarme con orgullo sus happy socks (medias alegres) para romper el hielo. Costumbre que por cierto explica en el consejo número 86, donde señala que vestir esas medias coloridas ayuda a desestresarse y tomarse la vida con mejor humor. En el ejemplar, el autor plasma de una forma puntual y sencilla, los conocimientos que ha adquirido en años de experiencia y especialización en mercadeo digital que sin duda alguna está en auge. “Este es el mejor momento para abrir tu propia compañía de mercadeo digital o aprender a mercadear tu negocio a través del internet con el propósito optimizar las ganancias. Para ayudar a nuestros 200 miembros a obtener esos conocimientos, en las oficinas de la Cámara de Comercio impartimos cursos y talleres, algunos de ellos son gratuitos y otros tienen descuesto”, dijo Sarmiento al resaltar la importancia de construir relaciones basándose en la formula G.A.S. • Give Knowledge / Comparte Conocimiento • Answer Questions / Responde Preguntas • Solve Problems / Resuelve Problemas Sarmiento asegura que siguiendo estos tres pasos, se podrá crear una conexión con el público. “Ganarás la confianza de los posibles clientes generando el elemento VALOR que es más primordial que vender”. “Si quieres vender en las redes, lo último que tienes que hacer es vender. Para vender la gente tiene que confiar en ti. ¿Cómo se logra eso? Ayudando, regalando tus conocimientos a través de YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, seminarios, cursos, etc”. Y esto precisamente es el consejo número 50 del libro, mientras que el número

60 insta a mantenerte en constante aprendizaje para que el galopante mundo 2.0 no te deje atrás. Para lograr esa conexión, Sarmiento también recomienda escribir una lista de 10 formas de proveer valor a tus clientes planteándote las siguientes preguntas: ¿Cómo mejoro sus vidas?, ¿cómo las hago más fáciles?, ¿cómo los ayudo a ser más eficientes? “Esta lista va a cambiar la forma en la que tú piensas sobre mercadeo y servicios”, garantizó Sarmiento. Luego de una breve pausa, el también director ejecutivo de New Media, New Marketing Inc., aprovechó para comentarme que en el amplio salón donde nos encontrábamos sentados tuvieron una clase particular el mes pasado. “Vinieron los representantes de la oficina USPS para explicar cómo funciona el servicio de Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) que está expuesto en el punto número 4 del libro y al cual se puede aplicar por la página web. Este servicio consiste en enviar un mínimo de 200 volantes, tarjetas, folletos, etc; yo normalmente envío 500 una vez al mes y solo cuesta 90 dólares. Puedo dirigirme a un área específica y son entregados puerta a puerta”, explicó al destacar que se trata de un servicio de alto alcance por un bajo costo. Al preguntarle qué recomienda a las personas que consideran emprender su propio negocio, pero no se atreven por miedo al fracaso, por falta de capital, inseguridad o falta de motivación, Sarmiento respondió que cualquier concepto de negocio puede funcionar pero se debe ofrecer algo diferente y analizar si hay mercado para ello. “No se debe comenzar un negocio simplemente porque te enamoraste de la idea. Y otro gran error que cometen muchos inmigrantes cuando llegan a este país, es comprar una franquicia que lo único que hace es dejar perdidas. Gastan mucho dinero sin hacer un análisis. Cientos de casos dan fe de ello”. Otro de los consejos planteados en el libro destaca la importancia de aprender a utilizar el programa WordPress para desarrollar blogs y páginas web. “Hoy en día ese es uno de los mejores trabajos que hay. Porque todos los negocios necesitan páginas web, ya sea para crearlas o mejorarlas. Y esto se puede hacer desde la comodidad de tu casa. Cualquier persona puede hacer páginas web con ese programa. Nosotros ofrecemos cursos de WordPress en nuestras oficinas, los interesados pueden inscribirse a través de nuestro portal”. (www.doralchamber.org)

En esa misma línea de recomendaciones, en el puesto número 30 del libro, el especialista en relaciones públicas exhorta a los residentes de Doral que adopten una calle. De esta manera, una calle bien transitada podría llevar un cartel de buen tamaño con el nombre de tu negocio y es completamente gratuito. Además, para la revelación del cartel se organiza un evento al cual a veces asisten el alcalde, concejales, policías y otras figuras políticas, expandiendo así la exposición del negocio al tiempo que construyes relaciones. La aplicación para este programa se hace a través del portal web de la ciudad de Doral (www.cityofdoral.com) Otra forma de socializar con el fin de ampliar la base de datos de tu negocio, es asistir a los eventos de Speed Networking que organiza la Cámara de Comercio para sus miembros, nos comenta Sarmiento. La dinámica consiste en sentarse por breves minutos con una persona para hablar de tu negocio y luego esa persona tiene dos minutos para hablar del suyo. Al finalizar el tiempo, la campana suena y uno de los dos se mueve a la siguiente silla a hacer lo mismo. Sarmiento asegura que podrías salir de allí con un numero de 25 a 50 tarjetas de contactos. Florida Karate Clubs dictó seminario para árbitros y entrenadores

El pasado 7 de abril se celebró en las instalaciones de Florida Karate Clubs, la prestigiosa escuela de karate ubicada en la ciudad del Doral y dirigida por el Sensei Luis Sanchez, el Seminario para Arbitros y Jueces dictado por la Sensei Fariba Madani, miembro de la World Karate Federation. En el seminario en referencia, los presentes tuvieron la oportunidad no solo de ampliar sus conocimientos en cuanto a las nuevas reglas de competencia para el Karate do, de cara a la participación de este increíble deporte en las Olimpiadas a celebrarse en el año 2020 en la ciudad de Tokio, sino también de certificarse como Jueces y Arbitros para participar en las competencias regionales y nacionales.

Bison Softball Team Makes School History

On Thursday April 26, the Ronald Reagan softball team made school history as they won the District Championship title for the 2018 season. The Bison defeated the Westland Lions with a shutout score of 21-0 in the fifth inning, being the first generation team to bring a District Championship trophy home. The team has worked relentlessly for the past four years to win first place in the district, and has only made it as far as earning the runnerup title for three consecutive years. Head coach Melanie Isaza is a 2015 Ronald Reagan graduate and team alumni. “Bringing this trophy home means a lot to me. When I played, my team and I brought the first ever district trophy to Reagan. Although it was second place we still broke history.” It is Isaza’s second year as head coach, and first district title win as a coach. “Now as a coach, I once again got to be a part of another historical moment for Reagan Softball,” said Isaza. For the senior team, Isaza has been both teammate and coach, “I am so happy and beyond proud of the team, and even more proud of four out of six seniors who I have watched grow the past four years.” Co-Captain and senior Ayleen Pardo has been part of the team since 2014 and has worked hard season after season to win the title of District Champions. “After so many years of fighting and battling against our district rival, my team was finally able to work our way to a Bison

District Championship Win,” said Pardo. Following the District Championship, the Bison Softball team will be recognized in the Downtown Doral City Hall amongst fellow athletes and the city council for their accomplishments this season. Next week the Bison will face the Nova Titans in the Regional semi- finals.

Alberto Carvalho takes the stage at LBA Luncheon The Latin Builders Association welcomed Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho to their April luncheon. Hundreds attended the event at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables on Friday, April 13. Superintendent Carvalho took the stage and congratulated the LBA Construction and Business Management Academy Charter High School Class of 2018. This is the school’s third graduating class. Several seniors were honored on stage and announced where they will be attending college after graduation. Carvalho also spoke about the “construction boom” in Miami-Dade County getting an applause following his speech. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is 4th largest school system in the country.

GLACSYSTEM Art Lab Un nuevo espacio cultural en Doral

a Pintura del Siglo XX y su evolución: Cubismo”, fue el nombre del evento realizado el pasado 11 de abril en GLACSYSTEM Art Lab, un nuevo espacio cultural alternativo en la ciudad de Doral. La reconocida artista plástico venezolana, Isolda Manzano, fue la encargada de conducir este encuentro, organizado por Jhanayra Manzano de @arts_nexus y Dainy Tapia de @art.seen.365, en los espacios de GLACSYSTEM Art Lab, donde los asistentes tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer más de cerca el arte del siglo XX y su evolución hacia el Cubismo, con un recorrido por algunas de las obras más importantes de este período, para finalmente internarse en los mensajes y códigos que guarda el Guernica de Picasso. Isolda Manzano es una artista de larga trayectoria, formada en escuelas tan importantes como la Escuela de Artes Plásticas

Cristóbal Rojas en Caracas y la de Bellas Artes en Carrara, Italia, y ha participado en más de 40 exposiciones entre colectivas e individuales, en varias ciudades de América Latina y Estados Unidos. Por su parte, Ilian Arvelo, quien también es artista plástico y directora de este espacio junto con el artista Diego Damas, expresó: “nuestro deseo es brindar un espacio para potenciar la promoción cultural y el interés por las artes tanto en Doral, como para el público de Miami en general; por lo que seguiremos ofreciendo más eventos a lo largo del año bajo esta alianza con Art Seen 365 y Arts Nexus”. Se espera que durante el resto de 2018 se presenten nuevos conversatorios, proyecciones fílmicas, talleres y otras actividades que permitan

acercar al público a una comprensión más sencilla y dinámica del mundo de las artes y los movimientos que marcan tendencia; además de disfrutar la exhibición de diferentes obras artísticas: pinturas, intervenciones, esculturas, fotografía y música. Durante el evento los asistentes pudieron disfrutar de algunas de las obras de Damas y Arvelo, así como de otros artistas. Tal es el caso del pintor cubano José Ley Hernández y del arquitecto venezolano Alberto Alberti. Cuando decidimos “dejar” de consumir azúcar porque al fin entendimos las consecuencias negativas que produce en nuestro cuerpo, tanto para la salud como para la composición corporal, pasamos a buscar “alternativas” que nos permita suplir esa necesidad. Y muchas personas recurren al consumo de edulcorantes artificiales, pensando que éstos no ocasionan ningún daño o no afecta nuestro cuerpo. Pues lamento decirles que el consumo en “exceso” de edulcorantes puede dañar un buen trabajo hecho en función de cambiar el estilo de vida.. y aquí el por qué..? Resulta que la percepción del sabor dulce nuestro cuerpo lo asume como “azúcar” y activa la insulina, que puede hacernos sentir ansiedad y puede hacernos almacenar grasa.
