Hernán M. Organvidez: New Chief of the Doral Police Department
The initial objectives of his administration are to make the police more visible, to work with the communities and to take advantage of the available technological resources to improve safety. Edda Pujadas, @epujadas
“
We cannot work without the community.” This is the phrase with which Hernan M. Organvidez takes the position of Chief of Police of the Doral Police Department. With the support of 32 years of experience in police services and safety in Miami Dade County. To Organvidez, this new position is a return to home because he was part of the initial police force that was hired from the County to work for the City of Doral. “I still remember back in 1985 when I use to patrol what is today the City of Doral. At that time there were only warehouses and now, look what a beautiful city we have.” The new Chief of Police has occupied the positions of officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, Executive officer, Commander and Chief of the South Operations Division. He was recently working in the private sector for Ando Consulting, while still providing consulting services and safety evaluations for private and public entities. It is important to highlight that during his administration at the South Operations Division, Organvidez was in charge of the security of 815,000 citizens, managed a task force of one thousand people (among officers and civilians) and managed a budget of 125 million dollars, all of which vouch for his leadership abilities. At an academic level, Organvidez has a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Florida International University (FIU). He is the first officer to represent the City of Doral and that has graduated from the National FBI Academy and has completed a Certificate from the Leadership Institute of the University of Miami.

In 2008, Organvidez handed the police services that were provided by the County to the City, which created its own department. Today, 10 years later, he returns to our city to handle a department formed by 130 sworn officers and 46 civilian employees, with an annual budget of 21 million. “I take this challenge, thankful for the work that was
started by the previous administration, and which was great. I have a team formed by professionals committed to their job, with enthusiasm and very close to their community. I am harvesting the achievements of what they have sown, in order to continue moving forward.” Organvidez takes the lead of the Doral Police Department convinced that in order to succeed in the police job, it is imperative that the officers are more visible and have more presence, to work hand in hand with the communities and take advantage of the technological resources to improve safety. Organvidez assures that “the Doral Police Department has 130 officers to serve sixty-two thousand residents and more than two hundred thousand people that come to the city during the day, for this reason the support through the communication of the neighbors is crucial. The eyes and ears of the residents is the most important thing for the police officers and many times this is the starting point of many important investigations.” When referencing the number of police officers in the City of Doral, Organvidez stated that it is still too soon to determine if there is a need for more officers, this is a subject that has to be analyzed in detail before taking a decision. The new Chief of Police was also emphatic when he stated that it is important to educate the population, especially in traffic matters. “We cannot only give out tickets when the people commit an infraction while driving, it is important to offer them information and help them with information about knowing and following the law.” Regarding safety in schools, which is one of the main subjects of concern today among the general population, Organvidez stated that even when this is a subject that technically is responsibility of the Miami Dade School Board, the Doral Police is always ready to help and it is already analyzing the possibility of implementing a program to reinforce the police presence during drop off and dismissal from schools. “In case this program is approved, it will involve
hiring retired officers that are reservists and that want to work part time, reinforcing the safety in the schools during the heavy hours in which it is more probable that an incident happens. We even have already a budget for the execution of this plan,” explains Organvidez. The Chief of Police added that the officers that work in the schools, have to be much more than police officers. “We have to teach the children and young generations, values, the importance of family and the community well-being. We need to incentivize them to be better persons and to understand that they have an important role in society.” With this commitment of supporting the schools, work with the communities, citizen education and police presence, Hernan M. Organvidez takes the lead of the Doral Police Department. We hope that he can count with the support of all the residents in order to guarantee our safety and well-being.

Nosotros no podemos trabajar sin la comunidad”. Con esta frase, Hernán M. Organvidez asume la jefatura de la Policía de Doral, avalado por 32 años de experiencia en servicios policiales y de seguridad para el condado de Miami-Dade. Para Organvidez esta nueva asignación es un regreso a casa, pues formó parte del primer cuerpo policial contratado del Condado para la ciudad de Doral en el 2005. “Todavía recuerdo en el año 1985 cuando patrullaba lo que hoy dia es la ciudad de Doral. En ese momento, nada más había galpones de almacenamiento y miren ahora la hermosa comunidad que tenemos”. El nuevo jefe de la Policía de Doral ha ocupado los rangos de oficial, detective, sargento, teniente, capitán, oficial ejecutivo, comandante, y jefe de la División de Operaciones del Sur. Más recientemente, estuvo trabajando en el sector privado en la compañía Ando Consulting, mientras continuaba brindando servicios de asesoramiento y evaluaciones de seguridad para empresas privadas y entidades públicas. Cabe destacar que, durante su gestión en la División de Operaciones del Sur, Organvidez estuvo a cargo de la seguridad de 815 mil ciudadanos, manejó una nómina compuesta por mil personas (entre oficiales y civiles) y administró un presupuesto de 125 millones de dólares, lo que da fe de sus capacidades de liderazgo. A nivel académico, Organvidez tiene una licenciatura en Administración de Justicia Penal de la Universidad Internacional de Florida (FIU, por sus siglas en inglés). Es el primer oficial que representó la ciudad de Doral y se graduó de la Academia Nacional del FBI y posee un certificado del Instituto de Liderazgo de la Universidad de Miami.

En el 2008, Organvidez entregó el servicio policial del condado a la ciudad de Doral que creo su propio departamento. Hoy, 10 años después, regresa a nuestra ciudad para manejar un departamento conformado por 130 oficiales juramentados y 46 empleados civiles, y con un presupuesto anual de 21 millones de dólares. “Asumo este nuevo reto, agradecido por el trabajo adelantado por la gestión anterior, el cual fue estupendo. Tengo un equipo conformado por profesionales sumamente comprometidos con su labor, entusiastas y muy vinculados a su comunidad. Estoy recogiendo los frutos de lo que ellos han cosechado para seguir adelante”. Organvidez asume la dirección de la Policía de Doral convencido de que, para lograr éxito en el trabajo
policial, hay que lograr que los oficiales sean más visibles y tengan mayor presencia, trabajar de la mano con las comunidades y aprovechar los recursos tecnológicos disponibles en materia de seguridad. Organvidez asegura que “la Policía de Doral tiene 130 oficiales para atender a 62 mil habitantes y a más de 200 mil personas que pasan por la ciudad durante el día, por lo cual el apoyo y la denuncia de los vecinos es fundamental. Los ojos y los oídos de los residentes es lo más importante para los agentes policiales y en muchas ocasiones, el punto de partida de importantes investigaciones”. Al hacer referencia a la cantidad de agentes policiales destacados en la ciudad de Doral, Organvidez manifestó que aún no puede determinar si son necesarios más oficiales, pues este es un tema que debe analizar exhaustivamente antes de tomar una decisión. El nuevo jefe policial también fue enfático al manifestar que es importante educar al público, especialmente en materia de tránsito. “No podemos conformarnos con poner multas cuando las personas comentan infracciones al manejar, debemos ofrecerle información y orientarlos en el conocimiento y cumplimiento de las leyes”. Con respecto a la seguridad en las escuelas, que es uno de los temas que más preocupa a la población general en estos momentos, Organvidez manifestó que,
si bien este asunto es, técnicamente, responsabilidad de la junta escolar del condado de Miami Dade, la Policía de Doral siempre esta presta a colaborar e incluso se está estudiando la posibilidad de implementar un programa para reforzar la presencia policial a las horas de entrada y salida de los colegios. “Este programa, de ser aprobado, consistiría en la contratación de oficiales retirados en reserva que estén dispuestos a trabajar medio tiempo para reforzar la seguridad en los colegios durante estas horas que son las más agitadas y propensas a que suceda cualquier imprevisto. Ya, incluso, tenemos el presupuesto para la ejecución de este plan”, explica Organvidez. Agregó el jefe policial que los oficiales que trabajan en las escuelas, tienen que ser mucho más que policías. “Tenemos que enseñarles a los jóvenes valores, la importancia de la familia y del bienestar comunitario. Hay que incentivarlos ha ser mejores personas y a entender que tienen un importante papel dentro de la sociedad”. Con este compromiso de atención a las escuelas, trabajo con las comunidades, educación ciudadana y presencia policial, Hernán M. Organvidez tomó las riendas de la Policía de Doral, por lo que esperamos que pueda contar con el apoyo de todos los residentes para garantizar nuestra seguridad y bienestar.

One-year moratorium
Medical marijuana still not available for sale in Doral Through this moratorium the city wants to take the time to conduct a thorough analysis of the implications of the establishment of these type of businesses for treatment or sale of medicinal marijuana in our community.

As of today, businesses for the sale or any treatment through medicinal marijuana cannot be established in the City of Doral. This comes after a one-year moratorium that was approved by the City Council and that establishes one-year extension to approve these permits. Councilwoman Christi Fraga explained that, due to the historic prohibition of marijuana, the City of Doral currently does not have any regulation for the development of land that rules over the property for the distribution, sale, delivery or retail of small dosages of medicinal marijuana or any tools or equipment for the administration of this. “We want to take advantage of this year, to which we are entitled legally, to review the law that was approved in the State of Florida regarding the use of medicinal marijuana and to evaluate its implications in our city and residents. Before we approve any permit related to this type of business we have to learn about all and any consequences that it can have in our Doral community,” comments Fraga. Fraga explained that the sale of medicinal marijuana is a State Law and should not be forbidden, but as City Council they have the obligation to search which is the
best way to establish it in the City of Doral. It should be taken into consideration that the businesses dedicated to the treatment or sale of medicinal marijuana are regulated under the same legislation as pharmacies. This one-year moratorium means that during this period of time, the City of Doral will not accept, process or approve any application for construction permits, rezoning, variances, new zoning permits, or any other permit for properties, entities or individuals that are related to treatments of medicinal marijuana. It is important to be clear in the fact that this moratorium is temporary and unless it is cancelled or extended by the City Council, it will automatically cease at the end of the year. It will also be derogated in case that an Ordinance forbidding these treatments or sales of medicinal marijuana is adopted or there are specific regulations established that regulate it or allow it. Councilwoman Fraga states that according to Section 381.986 (8) of the Florida Statues, the cities can determine, through Ordinances, the criteria for the amount, location and requirements of the permits as long as they do not conflict with State Law for the installation of centers of
treatment and/or sale of marijuana. Among the situations that the City of Doral is evaluating before approving the permits for these types of activities in its jurisdiction are, the potential impact on traffic, population and visitors concentration, Christi Fraga the value of the properties around the businesses, the demand of the services that the City of Doral provides that include inspections and increase in the police surveillance, among others and also general operative aspects that impact the common well-being of the residents.

ún no se podrán establecer centros para la venta o realización de tratamientos con marihuana con fines medicinales en la ciudad de Doral. Así se desprende de la moratoria aprobada por el Concejo Municipal que establece un año de prórroga para aprobar estos permisos. La concejal Christi Fraga explicó que, debido a la prohibición histórica de la marihuana, la Ciudad de Doral, actualmente, no tiene ningún reglamento de desarrollo de la tierra que rija el uso de propiedad con el propósito de distribución en el sitio, venta, entrega o venta minorista de bajo contenido de marihuana medicinal o dispositivos de administración de ésta. “Queremos aprovechar este año, al cual tenemos derecho legal, para revisar la ley aprobada por el Estado de la Florida con respecto al uso de la marihuana medicinal y evaluar sus implicaciones en nuestra ciudad y sus residentes. Antes de aprobar cualquier permiso relacionado con este tipo de establecimiento estamos en
la obligación de conocer todas las consecuencias que pueden tener para la comunidad de Doral”, comenta la concejal Fraga. Explicó Fraga que la venta de marihuana medicinal es una ley estatal que no debe prohibirse, pero como Concejo Municipal están en la obligación de buscar la mejor manera de establecerla en la ciudad de Doral, tomando en cuenta que los locales dedicados a la venta o aplicación de tratamientos con marihuana medicinal se rigen bajo las mismas regulaciones que las farmacias. Esta moratoria de un año significa que, durante este periodo, la Ciudad de Doral no aceptará, procesará o aprobará ninguna solicitud de permisos de construcción, cambios en el uso de la tierra, variaciones o permisos de zonificación, o cualquier otro permiso de desarrollo para propiedades, entidades o individuos relacionados con centros de tratamiento de marihuana medicinal. Es importante aclarar que esta moratoria es temporal y a menos que sea levantada o extendida por el Concejo
Municipal, cesa automáticamente al finalizar el año. Igualmente, sería derogada en caso de que se adopte una ordenanza que prohíba los tratamientos o ventas de marihuana medicinal o se establezcan normas que lo regulen y/o permitan. Señala la concejal Christi Fraga que, de conformidad con la Sección 381.986 (8) de los Estatutos de la Florida, las ciudades pueden determinar, a través de ordenanzas, los criterios para la cantidad, ubicación y requisitos de permisos que no entren en conflicto con la ley estatal para la instalación de centros de tratamiento y/o venta de marihuana. Entre los aspectos que la Ciudad de Doral está evaluando antes de permisar este tipo de actividades en su jurisdicción están el impacto potencial en el tráfico; la congestión poblacional y de visitantes; el valor de las propiedades circundantes; la demanda de servicios de la Ciudad de Doral, que incluyen inspecciones y aumento de la vigilancia policial, entre otros y aspectos operativos
This moratorium will also allow the City of Doral to have enough time to determine which zoning districts, if they are, are adequate for this type of establishments and if it is in the best interest of the residents to have specific regulations for the development and licenses that will regulate the operation of the medicinal marijuana distributors. Fraga stated that it is vital to minimize and control the adverse effects that this new law could bring regarding marijuana and its medicinal uses, and this can only be achieved through a detailed and rational analysis that compares the characteristics of our city and its residents with the requirements for the operation of these types of treatment centers of medicinal marijuana. Regarding the adoption of this law related to marijuana in other cities of Miami Dade County, we know that Miami Beach, North Miami Beach, Miami Springs, Coral Gables, and Surfside have already approved ordinances with specific regulations for the authorization of the operation of these centers, under state and federal legislations. On the other side, Miami Lakes, Aventura, Palmetto Bay, and North Bay Village, forbid the establishment of these type of businesses, being that as of today it is unknown which might be the legal implications of this decision. In the meantime, Miami Shores Village, Homestead and Bay Harbor Island decided, same as the City of Doral, to establish a moratorium that provides them with the necessary time to take a decision that goes in accordance with the needs of its residents. By approving this moratorium, the City of Doral has been able to postpone the application of this law in our community until the necessary regulations have been developed, those that consider the health needs, safety and well-being of all the residents and visitors of the city.

Esta moratoria de un año también permitirá a la Ciudad de Doral disponer del tiempo suficiente para determinar cuáles distritos de zonificación, si los hay, son adecuados para este tipo de establecimientos y si es de interés de los residentes que se formulen regulaciones de desarrollo y licencias que regirán apropiadamente el funcionamiento de los distribuidores de marihuana medicinal. Fraga señaló que es de vital importancia minimizar y controlar los efectos adversos que podrían traer esta nueva ley con respecto a la marihuana y sus usos medicinales, lo cual sólo puede lograrse a través de un estudio sensato y minucioso que compare las características de nuestra ciudad y sus residentes con los requisitos de operación de los centros de tratamiento de marihuana con fines medicinales. Con relación a la aplicación de esta ley referente al uso de la marihuana en otras ciudades del condado de Miami-Dade, podemos ver que, en Miami Beach, North Miami Beach, Miami Spring, Coral Gables y Surfside, ya fueron aprobadas ordenanzas con regulaciones específicas para permitir la operación de estos centros, bajo las leyes federales y estatales. Por el contrario, Miami Lakes, Aventura, Palmeto Bay y North Bay Village, prohibieron el establecimiento de este tipo de locales, desconociéndose por los momentos las implicaciones legales de esta decisión. Mientras que Miami Shores Village, Homestead y Bay Harbord Island, decidieron, al igual que la Ciudad de Doral, establecer una moratoria que otorgue el tiempo necesario para tomar una decisión acorde con las necesidades de los residentes. Al aprobar esta moratoria, la Ciudad de Doral ha logrado postergar la aplicación de esta ley en nuestra comunidad hasta que se hayan desarrollado regulaciones adecuadas, consideradas y adaptadas a las necesidades de la salud, la seguridad y el bienestar general de todos los residentes y visitantes.

Doral Police Explorers Win Third Place in South Florida Police Explorer Competition

he City of Doral Police Department says they couldn’t be more proud of the Doral Police Explorer Post #1211. The Explorers participated in the annual South Florida police explorer competition, that was held during Spring Break at Piper High School in Sunrise, Fl. The Doral Police Explorers Post #1211 along with their advisors Officer Michael Rodriguez, and Officer Ricardo Arenas, attended the annual competition to showcase their law enforcement skills in various categories. The competition has six main categories which are: In progress, Domestic, Crime Scene, Traffic Stops, Search and Seizure, and Crisis. Besides the main categories they also have other competition categories such as Tug of War, Basketball, Obstacle Course, Bike Course, and Marching. After three long days of competition the Doral Explorers placed 3rd overall in the “In Progress” category and 4th overall in the “Domestic” category. The post #1211 was one of 22 different posts from Dade and Broward County that participated. The purpose of the annual competition, which is organized by Learning for Life, is to unite local Explorer Posts from both Dade and Broward county to have three full days in which they get to display their knowledge of police work and in the process establish friendships with other likeminded teens who share the same interest toward law enforcement. The Doral Police Department Police Explorer program is for young men and women ages 1421 years of age. It’s an opportunity to give young adults the chance to work with officers and employees of the Doral Police Department and their community, and possibly continue towards a career in law enforcement. It is strictly a volunteer program that gives service to the Police Department and the community. The Explorer Program is a structured program that gives young men and women the academic and technical training needed to become future Law Enforcement Officers. The program also gives Explorers the leadership skills and self-discipline needed to become successful community leaders. Police Explorers provide a valuable service to the community by assisting in traffic related duties, fingerprinting of children for “Kid print” programs, Color Guard details for community functions and Administrative service to the Police Department. Exploradores de la Policía de Doral ganan el tercer lugar en la competencia de Exploradores del Sur de la Florida.

l Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad de Doral dice estar muy orgulloso del grupo de Exploradores de la Policía de nuestra ciudad. Los exploradores participaron en la Competencia Anual de Exploradores de Policía del Sur de la Florida, que se llevó a cabo durante las vacaciones de primavera en Piper High School, en Sunrise, Fl. Los Exploradores de la Policía Post # 1211 junto a sus mentores, el Oficial Michael Rodríguez, y el Oficial Ricardo Arenas, asistieron a la competencia anual para mostrar sus habilidades en el cumplimiento de la ley en varias categorías. La competencia tiene seis categorías principales que son: En Progreso, en Violencia Domestica, en Escena del crimen, en Paradas de Tráfico, en Búsqueda e incautación y en Crisis. Además de las categorías principales, también tienen otras categorías de competencia como Tira y afloja, Baloncesto, Carrera de Obstáculos, circuito de ciclismo y Marcha. Doral Explorers se ubicó en el 3er lugar en la categoría “En progreso” y en el 4to lugar en la categoría “Doméstico”. El equipo de exploradores de Doral fue uno de los 22 equipos que participaron entre el Condado Miami-Dade y el condado Broward. La competencia es organizada por ‘South Florida Council Learning for Life’ con el próposito de unir a los equipos de ambos condados por tres días completos para que puedan mostrar su conocimiento del trabajo policial y puedan establecer amistades con otros adolescentes que compartan el mismo interés hacia la aplicación de la ley. El Doral Police Exlorers es un programa de servicio comunitario bajo el Departamento de la policía de Doral dirigido a jóvenes de 14 a 21 años de edad, que tengan un interés de trabajar con los oficiales y empleados del Departamento de Policía, la comunidad, y posiblemente quieran continuar hacia una carrera en la aplicación de la ley. Este programa brinda a los jóvenes, la capacitación académica y técnica necesaria para convertirse en futuros oficiales y brinda la autodisciplina y las habilidades necesarias para convertirse en líderes comunitarios exitosos. Los Police Explorers brindan un servicio a la comunidad asistiendo en tareas relacionadas con el tráfico, la toma de huellas dactilares de los niños para los programas “Kid print” y “Color Guard”. Child abuse can cause severe trauma
The impact of child abuse is much bigger than its immediate and visible effects, it has both short and long - term consequences that can include brain injury, delay in the development, problems while learning, relationship problems, depression and even aggressive behavior.

hild abuse is a tragedy. A tragedy that affects millions of children and families every year, that leaves scars in the personality, learning and social development in its young victims. Every week, the agencies for Child Protective Services around the United States receive more than 3.6 million calls about suspected child abuse. These figures from the Childhelp organization state that these references about child abuse can be speaking in reality of more than 6.6 million children, because a majority of them involve more than one child. The statistics about child abuse also make evident that, at least four out of every five victims are abused by a close relative, even their own parents. In general terms, the people that abuse and neglect the children are the same people that are supposed to take care of them and see for their well-being. Unfortunately, in the United States there is an average of four to seven children per day that are abused or neglected. Given these alarming figures, April was named National Child Abuse Prevention Month, in hopes of increasing the general knowledge about his problem and more important to let us know what is that each one of us can do to help prevent the abuse that affects our children worldwide.

This abuse is associated with consequences both in the short and long terms, these can include brain injuries, delay in development, learning issues, problems while developing and creating relationships, aggressive behavior and depression. The survivors of abuse, negligence or abandonment can be in a higher risk to develop problems such as a low academic achievement, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and criminal behavior, which not only affect the child and his/her family but also the society as a whole. Erika Angulo, therapist and expert in children’s
mental health, explains that the research on this subject suggests that child abuse can affect both the physiological development and the mental health of the child, especially if these abuses happen during the first years of life, when the brain of the child is still under development. “In general terms the children that are victims of child abuse, live with the fear that these attacks can happen again, and therefore the emotional problems and the difficulties that they develop in their future relationships arise. They are human beings that are condemned to live in fear,” adds the specialist Angulo. Angulo adds, “even when it is true that child abuse can be a significant risk factor while developing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks and addictions, among others, it is important to clarify that this is not a sole element that triggers this type of situations.” This clarification that Angulo provides is of vital importance because it shows that not because a child had been abused during his childhood years, he will necessarily become a violent person, but he will have a higher risk to become one and therefore the importance to develop campaigns to prevent child abuse, same as mental health programs that help as a support for the victims of abuse. According to the Office for Child Support from the US Department of Health Department and Human Services, there are four types of child abuse: negligence or abandonment, physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse. Even when any of these can happen on their own, they tend to occur together.
Negligence or abandonment is the inability to provide for the basic needs of a child and it can be physical (lack of proper supervision or not providing food, protection or the necessary medical care), educational (inability to educate a child or deficiency in supporting special education for the child), and emotional (lack of attention to the emotional needs of a child or exposing the child to domestic violence). Physical abuse, as its name shows, is a physical injury (that includes from small bruises to severe broken bones or even death) as a result of punches, kicking the child, biting, pushing, shaking a child, stabbing, strangling, blows (with the hand, sticks, ropes or any other object), burns or any other way to hurt a child. Sexual abuse includes activities from a parent or care giver towards a child such as touching the genitalia of a minor, penetration, incest, rape, sodomizing a child, exhibiting in front of a child, commercial exploitation of a child through prostitution or the production of pornographic material. Emotional abuse is any pattern of behavior that impedes upon the emotional development of the child or the development of his self-esteem. This can include constant criticism, threats, rejection, and also the lack of love, support or direction. Even when child abuse is present in all segments

The Child Abuse Prevention Month is an opportunity for us, as a society to understand our role in the fight against this type of activities, role that should start by denouncing it. Some of the signals that show that a child might be suffering of child abuse include that they are nervous around adults, show aggression towards adults or other children, are unable to stay awake or to focus for extended periods of time, have sudden and dramatic changes in their personality or activities, explicit sexual behaviors or show interest in sexuality at an abnormal age, show bruises or constant injuries without explanation, low self-esteem and poor hygiene. Angulo states that, from her experience as a therapist, one of the most effective ways to prevent child abuse is through the family. “I believe that as a community we should work to provide the parents with the tools that can help them support the upbringing of their children, helping them in the creation of a more conscious education, where they are more careful of their own behavior and history, in such a way in which those that were abused while being children, do not

l abuso o maltrato infantil es una tragedia. Una tragedia que afecta a millones de niños y familias cada año, dejando secuelas en la personalidad y en el desarrollo cognitivo y social de las pequeñas víctimas Cada semana, las agencias de servicios de protección de menores a lo largo de Estados Unidos reciben más de 3.6 millones de sospechas del maltrato de niños. Estas cifras de la organización Childhelp agregan que estas referencias a abusos infantiles pueden llegar a involucrar a más de 6.6 millones de niños, pues muchas de ellas incluyen a más de un pequeño. Las estadísticas relacionadas con el maltrato infantil también evidencian que, por lo menos cuatro de cada cinco víctimas, son abusados por un familiar cercano, incluso por sus propios padres. Por lo general, las personas que cometen abuso y negligencia de niños son las mismas personas responsables de la seguridad y el bienestar del pequeño. Desafortunadamente, en Estados Unidos hay un promedio, entre cuatro y siete niños cada día por abuso y negligencia infantil. Estas penosas y alarmantes cifras llevaron a que se decretara abril como el Mes de la Prevención del Abuso Infantil en los Estados Unidos con el propósito de aumentar el conocimiento general acerca de este problema y aún más importante, sobre lo que todos podemos hacer para ayudar a prevenir el abuso que afecta a los niños a nivel mundial.

El impacto del abuso infantil es mucho mayor que sus efectos inmediatos y visibles. El maltrato se asocia con consecuencias de corto y de largo plazo que pueden incluir lesiones cerebrales, retrasos en el desarrollo, trastornos en el aprendizaje, problemas en desarrollar y formar relaciones, comportamiento agresivo y depresión. Los sobrevivientes de abuso, negligencia o abandono pueden encontrarse en mayor riesgo de tener problemas, tales como un bajo logro académico, abuso de drogas, embarazo en la adolescencia y conducta criminal, los cuales afectan no solamente al niño y a la familia, sino también a la sociedad en su totalidad.
Erika Angulo, terapeuta y experta en salud mental infantil, explica que las investigaciones sobre el maltrato infantil sugieren que el abuso infantil puede afectar tanto el desarrollo fisiológico como la salud mental del niño, especialmente si estos abusos suceden durante los primeros años de vida cuando el cerebro del niño todavía está en desarrollo. “Por lo general, los niños que son víctimas de maltrato infantil viven con el temor de que estos ataques sucedan de nuevo y de ahí las afecciones emocionales y las dificultades que se pueden generar en sus relaciones futuras. Son seres humanos que se han visto obligados a vivir con miedo”, agrega la especialista Angulo. “Ahora”, agrega Angulo, “si bien es cierto que el maltrato infantil puede ser un factor de riesgo significativo para desarrollar problemas de salud mental tales como depresión, ansiedad, ataques de pánico y adicciones, entre otros, es importante aclarar que este no es un elemento único para desarrollar este tipo de situaciones.” Esta aclaratoria realizada por Angulo es de vital importancia porque evidencia que, no porque un niño haya sido abusado durante su infancia se va a volver necesariamente violento, pero si va a aumentar el riesgo de serlo y de ahí la importancia de desarrollar campañas de prevención al maltrato infantil, así como programas de salud mental que sirvan de apoyo para las víctimas de abuso. Según la oficina de atención a la infancia del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Estados Unidos, hay cuatro tipos de maltrato de niños: negligencia o abandono, abuso físico, abuso sexual y abuso emocional. Aunque cualquiera de estas formas se puede encontrar por separado, tienen a ocurrir juntas.
La negligencia o abandono es la incapacidad de cubrir las necesidades básicas de un niño y puede ser física (carencia de supervisión apropiada o no provisión de alimento, protección o cuidado médico necesario), educativa (inhabilidad de educar a un niño o falla en atender las necesidades de educación especial) y emocional (desatención a las necesidades emocionales de un niño o exposición a la violencia domestica). El abuso físico, como su nombre lo indica, es una lesión física (que incluye desde moretones pequeños hasta fracturas severas o muerte) como resultado de puñetazos, patadas, mordidas, sacudidas, empujones, puñaladas, estrangulamiento, golpes (con la mano, palo, cuerda, u otro objeto), quemaduras o cualquier otra manera de hacerle daño a un menor. El abuso sexual incluye actividades por un padre o persona a cargo del niño tales como acariciar los órganos genitales de un pequeño, penetración, incesto, violación, sodomización, exhibicionismo,

explotación comercial a través de prostitución o producción de materiales pornográficos. El abuso emocional es cualquier patrón de comportamiento que impide el desarrollo emocional del niño o el desarrollo de su sentido de autoestima. Esto puede incluir críticas constantes, amenazas, rechazo, así como la negación de amor, apoyo o dirección. Si bien el maltrato de menores ocurre en todos los segmentos de nuestra sociedad, los factores de riesgo son mayores en familias donde los padres abusan el alcohol o drogas; están aislados de sus comunidades; tienen dificultad controlando su enojo o estrés; se muestran desinteresados en el cuidado, alimento o seguridad de sus niños y aparentan tener problemas serios de tipo económicos, de vivienda o personales. Algunas señales que muestran que un niño podría estar siendo maltratado incluyen nerviosismo alrededor de los adultos, agresión hacia los adultos u otros niños, incapacidad de mantenerse despierto o concentrarse por periodos extendidos, cambios abruptos y dramáticos en personalidad o actividades, comportamientos explícitos sexuales o interés en sexualidad no apropiados para su edad, moretones o lesiones frecuentes o inexplicadas, baja autoestima y mala higiene.
Manifiesta Angulo que, desde su experiencia como terapeuta, una de las maneras más efectivas para prevenir el maltrato infantil es desde la familia. “Considero que, como comunidad, debemos trabajar para proveerle a los padres herramientas que le sirvan de apoyo en la crianza de sus hijos, asistiéndolos para ejercer una educación más consiente y en donde sean más cuidadosos de sus propios actos y de su historia, de tal manera que
aquellos que recibieron maltrato en su infancia no lo traspasen a sus hijos”. Los esfuerzos hacia la prevención de las comunidades y organizaciones del estado deben enfocarse en que los padres desarrollen sus habilidades paternas/maternas, entiendan los beneficios de las nuevas técnicas de disciplina no violenta y comprendan y satisfagan las necesidades emocionales, físicas y de desarrollo de sus niños. El Mes de la Prevención del Abuso Infantil es una oportunidad para que, como sociedad, entendamos el papel que todos tenemos en la lucha contra este tipo de abuso, lo cual debe empezar por la denuncia. here are several avenues to obtain immigration status that allow foreign investors to operate their business in the United States. Each one has different requirements according to the purpose for which the visa is designed. por ejemplo bajo un estatus B1, los extranjeros están autorizados a realizar limitados actos de negocios, tales como celebrar reuniones de negocios, asistir a seminarios, convenciones o exposiciones científicas, educativas o comerciales, adquirir una propiedad inmobiliaria, negociar un contrato, entre
otros. El propósito del viaje debe ser ingresar a los Estados Unidos por negocios de naturaleza legítima y tener la intención de permanecer por un período específico. Ahora bien, si el extranjero desea operar activamente su negocio, es preciso que aplique

por otro estatus migratorio. Escoger cuál es la vía adecuada para cada persona requiere de una entrevista exhaustiva que permita analizar los intereses personales y familiares el cliente, el tiempo que la persona tiene planeado permanecer en los Estados Unidos, y el tipo de inversión que desea desarrollar, entre muchas otras cosas. Una de las visas que vemos con más frecuencia es la visa L-1, la cual está prevista para aquellas empresas extranjeras que necesitan transferir un empleado a una sucursal o filial en los Estados Unidos. A menudo, los interesados en estas visas son dueños de negocios que desean expandir su empresa hacia el mercado norteamericano, estos dueños de negocios generalmente se desempeñan como directores ejecutivos de sus propias empresas, y siendo los más conocedores de su oficio, son quienes desean liderar el nuevo emprendimiento en los Estados Unidos y ser los beneficiarios de la visa L-1. Frecuentemente la adquisición de dicho negocio se llevó a cabo sin la representación de un abogado que se asegurara de investigar los posibles problemas legales y financieros asociados al negocio y sin un estudio que corroborara el valor del mismo. 2. Asumir que su negocio funciona de la misma manera en todos los mercados. Reiteradamente vemos clientes que confiados en la vasta experiencia que adquirieron en su
país cometen el error de no asesorarse por profesionales en el mercado estadounidense. Los mercados funcionan de diferente manera, los estudios financieros adecuados para cada negocio son una herramienta importante para medir los riesgos asociados con la inversión, el tiempo para recibir ganancias y los costos operativos del negocio. 3. Apresurarse a aplicar por una visa sin anticipar lo que va a necesitar para la renovación de la misma. Al momento de analizar la elegibilidad de nuestros clientes para la aplicación de la visa nos aseguramos de anticipar lo que va a necesitar para poder renovar su visa. Obtener una aprobación inicial de una visa sin que existan probabilidades reales de calificar para una renovación podría convertirse en una situación muy perjudicial para los inversionistas y sus familias. ace pocos meses, en Octubre de 2017 nuestra querida ciudad del Doral se convirtió en una de las pocas ciudades en el mundo (y la única ciudad en la Florida) en recibir el Iso 37120 y la certificación de Ciudad Platino otorgada por el WCCD ( World Council on City Data), poniéndola a la par con ciudades como Dubai, Amsterdam, Londres , Boston, Los Angeles y Barcelona. Además nuestra ciudad fue nominada por Forbes como la segunda mejor ciudad para vivir en los Estados Unidos. La pregunta es, por qué? La respuesta... El gran trabajo que han hecho los autoridades de nuestra ciudad, empresarios, residentes, y representantes del sector educativo! El slogan que nuestra ciudad tiene es VIVE, TRABAJA, APRENDE, JUEGA, (Live, Work, Learn, Play) el cual resume a la perfección lo nuestra ciudad ofrece: Una ciudad orientada al bienestar total e integral de sus residentes y visitantes. Uno de esos es el programa Step up Doral, en el que el mismo alcalde del Doral, el señor Juan Carlos Bermúdez participa con miembros de la comunidad a realizarlo. El objetivos es que los residentes, de todas las edades, adopten un estilo de vida más saludable para el cuerpo y para la mente, fomentado la actividad física y monitoreando la cantidad de pasos que las personas dan al día. Uno de estos programas es el nuevo sistema de bicicletas que tiene la ciudad del Doral, el cual permite a cualquier residente, tomar una de las bicicletas de color naranja que están por toda la ciudad, utilizarla como medio de transporte y al mismo tiempo, hacer ejercicio! Este programa ha tenido un gran éxito ya que a diario se puede observar muchas personas usando las bicicletas. La ciudad recibió 1 millón de dólares de un bono federal para construir el puente peatonal y para bicicletas que se construirá sobre Doral Boulevard.
La ciudad está tan enfocada en el deporte, que se escuchan rumores que incluso hay la posibilidad de que el estadio del famoso y renombrado futbolista David Beckham, se construya en la ciudad del Doral en el terreno de 23.7 acres localizado en la 79 avenida, donde estaba ubicada la casa matriz de PepsiCo. Ahora este terreno le pertenece al grupo constructor Terra y Terranova. Otra alternativa que se esta considerando es el Melreese Golf course, que queda muy cerca del Doral y del Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami.

ollege is not for everybody. Everybody wants to college. Everybody should go to college. But it’s not for everybody. If you are a student who is not going to succeed in college or achieve your dreams by graduating from college, then don’t go. You can still have a successful career and economic stability without going to college. Not everybody is built to study four or more years to then start working towards professional success. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal told the story of a brilliant young woman who was giving her parents angst at her decision to attend a two year technical community college because she loved working with her hands as a mechanic. This despite her very high grades in honors courses. However, she reasoned that her

starting salary after a debt-free two years in college would be around $80 per hour. She was very satisfied with her decision- but her parents were still struggling. If the student has a particular skill or has learned certain techniques from others, he may be better off pursuing a trade that does not necessarily require college. Electricians can make almost $60K their first year of work (more than most preschool teachers make). If the student is truly interested in a particular trade, is good at, and doesn’t mind doing it for the rest of his life- then why not? Students may feel that there is a stigma to attending a vocational educational program as opposed to going to a “real college”- but consider the option. Going to school to study something that really isn’t your calling while spending thousands of dollars? It’s simply not a good investment for you as a student. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Xavier Suarez started a pre-apprenticeship program for students in specific High Schools so that they could start training in

Educators are recognizing that college is not for everybody and therefore they are trying to provide students specific skills that make them employable and marketable with just a high school diploma. Granted, some careers require an Associate’s degree- but that is only a two year degree and can be obtained at a state college where tuition is much lower. For example, according to U.S. News, the top job with just an Associate’s Degree is that of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at a medium salary of $74K. Second is Paralegal that pays a salary around $49K. And there is a labor shortage in regards to skilled construction workers and general workers in the building profession. This not to say that college is a bad deal. College graduates overall will make more money; have more possibility of advancing in their career; and are generally happier. The key here is to understand your student’s personality and interests and determine if making a college investment is the right path. For many people it is, but for those where it is not- it’s OK to recognize that and take alternative steps. A student may not be suited for concentrated study over four years or more at a very high price tag. Perhaps the student doesn’t care for the typical lawyer, doctor, or engineer track. Sometimes, the student needs a little more time to mature before investing in college. That is when a year off or attending a local college for an Associates’ degree might be wise. However, let us keep in mind that the world changing Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both dropped out of Harvard University. Not going to college doesn’t mean that you are not brilliant. It simply means you have to find your own path.

Algunas veces, el estudiante necesita un poco más de tiempo para madurar antes de invertir en la universidad. Eso es cuando un año sabático o asistir a una universidad local para obtener un título de asociado podría ser acertado. ergio’s Family Restaurants, South Florida’s mainstay for over 43 years, has struck a deal to develop 25 new fast-casual restaurants. After an extensive search, Sergio’s Cuban awarded the rights to Cuban Manna, LLC for Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The development group is led by operator Manny Rodriguez who was the first person to bring Domino’s Pizza and Baskin Robbins to Latin America. Mr. Rodriguez has partnered with Altis Cardinal’s principals Frank Guerra and AJ Suarez. Both AJ and Frank currently have over $1.5 billion dollars in real estate development throughout the United States and were excited to be part of launching the growth of Sergio’s Cuban. The new fast-casual concept has already opened smaller counter locations at Florida International University, American Airlines Arena, Ft. Lauderdale Airport and will be launching new store-front locations throughout South Florida and beyond, beginning with the Grand Opening of the first of the Sergio’s Cuban franchises this past March 24th in North Miami. “While the core concept is rooted in Cuban culture and tradition, there is an exciting evolution in the healthier customizable menu and environment that promises a diversity beyond what you will find in the

t the heart of the American Dream is the dream of homeownership. Generations of Americans have achieved that dream through hard work and the economic opportunities our land has afforded them. But here in Miami-Dade County, that dream has become hard to reach for many in the working class, as demand outpaces supply in our ultracompetitive housing market thanks in large part to our rapidly growing population. Unfortunately, our active military and veteran families are also suffering from this phenomenon. And the problem goes far beyond homeownership – it’s about housing affordability in general. As the Military Liaison for Miami-Dade County and Chairman of the Military Affairs Board, I take very seriously the need for adequate, affordable housing for those serving, as well as for those who have served. I am constantly searching for avenues by discussing the issues with those in military command and the troops themselves, and I continue to explore the possibility of having a centralized, consolidated military housing community for the active, reserve and veteran components. Our veterans have done so much for us, and it’s incumbent on us as a society to do everything we can to keep them from falling into homeless and to find homes for those who have tragically found themselves living on the streets. We have made great strides in our community toward eliminating the problem of veteran homelessness thanks to great partners like the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust and social service providers, but we still have work to do. Today, there are an estimated 147 homeless veterans in our community. I’m happy to report that most are safely in shelter, and that nearly all those veterans, both sheltered and unsheltered, have permanent housing plans, which means they have plotted out a plan together with our help to emerge from homelessness. But this is hard work, and the cases are complex. For so many veterans suffering from mental illness and addiction, moving from homelessness to housing is a big step, but we’re fighting for them the same way they fought for us, helping them take the next steps in their life’s journey. Together with the Homeless Trust, Miami VA, Miami-Dade Public
Housing and Community Development, the City of Miami Beach Housing Authority and a host of other nonprofit partners and providers, we’ve created a system to ensure homeless veterans are quickly identified and have immediate access to shelter. Most importantly, we have the resources to swiftly move them to permanent housing with a host of wrap-around support services. Our biggest challenge remains finding safe, suitable and affordable housing. Today, I want to call on the patriotism of every property owner and landlord in MiamiDade County who’s willing to house a veteran. We need efficiencies and one-bedroom units, priced in the $900 to $1,100 range. or the fourth year in a row, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is collaborating with The Walt Disney Company — including Disney|ABC Television Group and ESPN — to help fund local park improvement projects across the country through the national “Meet Me at the Park” Earth Month campaign. The city that receives the most nominations will receive a $20,000 grant to improve a local park. Local parks make Doral a better place to live, work, learn and play. Parks are essential to our city’s health and wellbeing. They provide safe places for our residents to be active and enjoy nature—and they help preserve the environment and bring people together to create a sense of community. FPL strengthens the electric grid serving Doral as part of 2018 reliability and storm preparedness efforts lorida Power & Light Company (FPL) continues to upgrade its system in the Doral area as part of its ongoing work to strengthen the energy grid and improve service reliability for customers. Company investments, which include strengthening power lines and poles, trimming trees near power lines and installing smart grid technology, help make the grid more reliable day-to-day and speed restoration efforts following a major storm. “We continue to build a stronger and smarter electric grid to provide our customers with reliable service year-round,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. “Our ongoing investments in FPL’s energy grid and advanced smart grid technology help us deliver electricity our customers can count on in good weather and bad. This was evident during our restoration efforts after recent hurricanes, including Hurricane Irma, during which we responded quickly, considering the size and scope of the storm and compared to Hurricane Wilma – the last major storm to affect our service area.” FPL’s investments to the grid proved its benefits to customers by speeding the restoration efforts following Hurricane Irma. About 95 percent of customers had their power restored within seven days after the storm’s passing compared to 15 days after 2005’s Hurricane Wilma. Hardened or strengthened main power lines withstood the storm’s impact better than those that were not hardened. For example, a fraction of the number of poles was damaged in Hurricane Irma compared to Hurricane Wilma. Smart grid technology enabled customers to avoid approximately 546,000 outages during the storm. Strengthened power lines perform approximately 40 percent better than non-strengthened lines, improving everyday reliability throughout the year and speeding restoration efforts during severe weather such as summer thunderstorms.
2018 IMPROVEMENTS IN THE DORAL AREA
When the planned 2018 work is completed, FPL will have made the following improvements in and near Doral since 2006: • Strengthened 14 main power lines, including those that serve critical services, such as Miami-Dade County Police Department’s MidWest District station, Baptist Medical Plaza at Doral and a 9-11 emergency communications center, that are
necessary for communities to recover faster after a storm; • Cleared tree branches and vegetation — a major cause of power outages — from 746 miles of power lines, an average of 62 miles every year; • Inspected all 2,785 power poles every eight years, strengthening or replacing those that no longer meet FPL’s standards for strength; • Installed smart grid technology, including 108 automated switches on main and neighborhood power lines to help detect problems and restore service faster when outages occur; and • Inspected 71 main power lines and equipment using infrared technology to detect issues before they cause a power interruption. “FPL has the most reliable service of any energy company in Florida, but we’re never satisfied,” said Manny Miranda, senior vice president of power delivery for FPL. “We’re working hard every day to provide our customers within the Doral area with electric service they can count on. This includes several new improvement projects in the area, including MiamiDade County Aviation and Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Station 48.”
STRENGTHENING THE FPL GRID THROUGHOUT FLORIDA
Since 2006, FPL has invested more than $3 billion, as well as ongoing maintenance and improvement work, to make the energy grid stronger and smarter. This includes: • Strengthening 860 main power lines, including those that serve critical community facilities and services, such as hospitals, police and fire stations and other services necessary for communities to recover after a storm; • Clearing vegetation — a major cause of power outages — from more than 15,000 miles of power lines annually; • Inspecting the company’s 1.2 million power poles every eight years, and upgrading or replacing those that no longer meet our standards for strength; and • Installing 4.9 million smart meters and 90,000 intelligent devices along the energy grid using advanced technology that helps detect problems and restore service faster when outages occur.

merican citizens, green card holders, and U.S. “tax” residents are subject to U.S. tax, for domestic and foreign income despite where the individual resides or earns a living. The new tax code bill H.R.1. known as Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) established the exemption for taxation of foreign income by domestic corporations. The bill bestow 100 percent deduction for: The foreign-source portion of any dividend obtained from a specified 10-percent owned foreign corporation with U.S. partner. This amount carries the same portion to such dividend. -The undistributed foreign earnings of the specified 10-percent owned foreign corporation, carries to the total undistributed earnings of such foreign corporation. A specified 10-percent owned foreign corporation is any foreign corporation, in which a domestic corporation is an American taxpayer shareholder. It excludes passive foreign investment companies. Hybrid-Dividends Hybrid dividends are not qualified for deduction if received by a U.S. shareholder. According to the new tax reform bill, “A hybrid dividend is an amount received from a controlled foreign corporation for which a deduction would be allowed under this provision and for which the specified 10-percent owned foreign.” Undistributed Foreign Earnings refers to the portion of the undistributed earning which cannot be attributed to the foreign source-portion, or to the specified 10-percent owned foreign corporation. The bill is not allowing foreign tax credit for taxes that have been paid or accrued in relation to a dividend that qualifies for the deduction. For a domestic corporation to be

allowed a deduction for any dividends must go through a holding period. Shareholders of a foreign corporation should include its pro rata share of accumulated foreign income after 1986. A portion of that pro rata share of foreign earnings is deductible. The new reduced tax rate is 15.5% for cash and equivalents; and 8% for all other earnings. Unfortunately the foreign tax credit is limited to a taxable portion of the included income. However, there is an generally an eight-year period to pay off the increased tax liability. These special rules are available for S corporations and real estate investment trusts (REITs). Foreign intangible income: For domestic C corporations that are not regulated investments or REITs, are provided reduced tax rates on “foreign-derived intangible income” (FDII) and “global intangible low-taxed income” (GILTI). Afina y estiliza tu rostro con la cirugía del momento “La Bichectomía” Por: Dr. Raúl González
Muchas personas son delgadas, pero aparentan más pesos por su notables cachetes, pero gracias al procedimiento quirúrgico de carácter menor “Bichectomía”, ahora es posible reducir tu mejilla, que consiste en la extracción del exceso de bolas grasa de Bichat, unas glándulas de tejido graso que se encuentran en las mejillas, justo por debajo de los pómulos y separadas completamente de otros tejidos. Estas glándulas no cumplen ninguna función específica en los adultos, sino que solo aportan volumen a la zona, haciendo más redondo el rostro. Como resultado de la operación de cachetes la mejilla se afina y estiliza logrando resaltar la imagen de los pómulos, y definir el reborde mandibular. Este efecto de adelgazamiento de la cara no solamente es visual, sino que tiene que ver con la reducción de las mejillas. La operación dura poco tiempo, aproximadamente de 40 minutos a una hora, y no necesita grandes cuidados posteriores, no deja cicatrices visibles, por lo que se podrá volver a la rutina diaria apenas salga del consultorio. La bichectomía está indicada para personas delgadas, de cualquier sexo, que tienen un aspecto redondeado y poco definido del rostro, sin que esto se deba a una posible obesidad o sobrepeso. También para personas que deseen tener el rostro más estilizado y anguloso, ya que al extirpar las bolas de Bichat, se consigue dar un aspecto más delgado a la cara, como consecuencia del hundimiento de la mejilla que acentúa más los pómulos. La cirugía es de carácter menor, pues se trata de unos simples cor tes que se realizan en la par te interna de las mejillas, y desde los que se extraen las bolas de Bichat. No es una intervención complicada, Al mes podrá apreciar el resultado, ya que la zona se desinflama y se puede apreciar el resultado de la cirugía, dando como resultado un real adelgazamiento de cara por reducción de mejillas. The award is in recognition of the Councilwoman’s many accomplishments and contributions to the City of Doral, as well as being an inspiration to all women for her leadership and commitment to serve her community. The luncheon took place on Friday, March 23rd at the Rusty Pelican. “I am extremely grateful to be recognized with this prestigious award by the SFLHCC . I have always been passionate about serving my community and I look forward to continuing these efforts that positively affects the lives of others,” said Councilwoman Mariaca. The SFLHCC was founded on July 21, 1994, with the mission of promoting the continued growth and development of the Hispanic business community and to serve as a resource center and forum to advocate for Hispanic and Minority owned businesses. On Thursday, March 8th, the City of Doral partnered with the Office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner (District 12) Jose “Pepe” Diaz to host One Blood for a blood donation at Doral Government Center. The community was invited to stop by to donate blood to save lives in honor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Over 21 pints of blood were collected in just a few hours, which could save up to 63 lives! In attendance to support the cause were: Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, Doral Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, Miami-Dade County School Board Member Susie Castillo and representatives from the offices of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and Florida State Representative Daniel Perez.
