Knight Arts Challenge Grant Brings “Ritmo Doral” Back!

oral will partner with the Rhythm Foundation for the highly-anticipated, second annual Ritmo Doral event thanks to a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of Knight Arts Challenge. The Knight Arts Challenge grant is a program dedicated to bringing South Florida together through the arts. “Our mission with the Knight Arts Challenge is to make art general in Miami, so that people can have high-quality arts experiences wherever they are. In that vein, we’re delighted to help the city of Doral bring Ritmo Doral to its downtown, creating an art hub for the entire community to enjoy,” said Victoria Rogers, VP/ Arts at Knight Foundation. Ritmo Doral is a free, family-friendly community cultural event in Downtown Doral designed to bring life and vitality to the new urban core of this diverse young municipality through music, art, technology and citizen diplomacy. This world music concert serves as a strategic platform to strengthen global ties by connecting local artists and community members with peers in Doral’s sister cities and beyond. The successful debut of Ritmo Doral in March 2017 delighted attendees with free world music presentations. For the second annual edition, Ritmo Doral will expand cultural programming and incorporate Augmented and Virtual Reality components that will stimulate and educate attendees and virtually connect Doral to its Sister Cities around the globe. Ritmo Doral 2018 is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, 2018 in Downtown Doral Park.

En ese sentido, estamos encantados de ayudar a la ciudad de Doral a traer Ritmo Doral a su ciudad, creando un centro artístico para que la comunidad entera disfrute “, dijo Victoria Rogers, VP / Arts at Knight Foundation. Ritmo Doral es un evento cultural comunitario gratuito que se llevará a cabo en el Downtown del Doral y que está orientado a las familias de Doral, diseñado para dar vida y vitalidad al nuevo núcleo urbano de este diverso y joven municipio a través de la música, el arte, la tecnología y la diplomacia ciudadana. Benefitting more than five thousand Florida International University’s students, faculty and staff

The new Doral-Fiu Trolley route will be ready by the summer of 2018

ore than five thousand students, faculty members and staff from Florida International University (FIU), will benefit from the start of the operation of the new route that will connect the City of Doral with FIU. Councilwoman Christi Fraga, explained that the City Council approved unanimously the implementation of the Florida International University Route, this will start operations by the Summer of 2018 and will be available from Monday to Friday from 6:00am to 11:00pm. “Three years ago, in collaboration with Mark B. Rosenberg, President of FIU, I started working in the creation of this direct route for the Trolley, between Doral and FIU, to provide service to more than five thousand students, faculty members and staff that live in our city and regularly commute to FIU. For this reason I am very grateful for the unanimous approval of the City Council and I am eager to see the start of its operation,” stated Councilwoman Fraga. Councilwoman Fraga also explained that this route will also help alleviate the traffic problem on NW 107th avenue. This is the result of a joint effort between the City of Doral through its Public Works Department, FIU, and the Miami Dade County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). In order to operate this new route between the City of Doral and FIU, two more trolleys will be purchased, it is expected that trolleys will run every 30 or 45 minutes in order to be able to handle the current and future transportation requirements of the riders of this new transportation route. This is one of the traffic solutions that are planned for the City of Doral.

ROUTE 3

In order to take this decision, a feasibility study was required. For this purpose, the City of Doral was awarded a grant from the TPO and the analysis for the implementation of one of these three routes was conducted after the Feasibility Study was concluded.

City of Doral staff met several times in coordination meetings with FIU and with representatives from the City of Sweetwater to develop different possibilities on route alignments and service areas, together they analyzed the pros and cons of each one of them. These were presented to the community at two different public workshops. The routes that were analyzed were: Route 1, with 12.1 miles in length, this is with 63.8% of its path within the limits of Doral, this would have been running along NW 66th street, Divine Savior Academy, Landmark and Doral Cay with an estimated number of annual riders of 95,867. Route 2, with 14.6 miles in length or 70% of its path within the limits of Doral, this would have run from NW 90th street, Ronald Reagan High School, Islands at Doral, Landmark and Midtown Doral with an estimated annual number of riders of 126,732. Finally, Route 3, the one that was approved by the City Council after thorough analysis of the recommendations and the studies from FIU, the TPO and the Public Works Department of the City of Doral. It will have a total of 15.2 miles in length

with 71.2% of its path running within the limits of the City and will service from NW 90th street, Ronald Reagan High School, Midtown Doral, Grand Bay, Landmark and Doral Cay. It is estimated that it will have a total annual number of riders of 137,020. Even when the first two routes that were analyzed offered advantages such as connecting the City of Doral with the main campus of FIU, the Engineering campus and access to the commercial businesses along NW 107th avenue, the first one did not complied with the requirement of having at least 70% of its path within the limits of the city, agreement that was signed with the TPO; and the second one had some overlaps with routes that are currently existent in the city and was farther away from the most important areas of FIU. Route 3, apart from the fact that it has the longest path, will service the highest number of riders and complies with having 70% of its path running within the limits of the City of Doral. It also connects the city with the main campus of FIU, the Engineering campus, it provides access to the commercial businesses along NW 107th avenue, and reaches the most important areas of FIU. Nevertheless, it is important to take into consideration that the segment of NW 102nd avenue between NW 74th streets and NW 66th street is not contemplated yet for service. Now that this route has been approved, the next steps will be to prepare the final report, amend the inter-local agreement with Miami Dade County through the TPO, develop the schedule of operation of the trolleys, purchase the new units and install the trolley stops in order to be ready to start operations by the Summer of 2018.

ás de 5 mil estudiantes, profesores y personal de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU, por sus siglas en inglés) se verán beneficiados por la implementación de la nueva ruta de Trolley que conectará a la ciudad de Doral con el recinto universitario. Así lo anunció la concejal de la Ciudad de Doral, Christi Fraga, quien explicó que el Concejo Municipal aprobó unánimemente la implementación de la ruta Doral-FIU, la cual entrará en funcionamiento el próximo verano del 2018 y estará disponible de lunes a viernes desde las seis de la mañana hasta las 11 de la noche. “Hace tres años, en colaboración con Mark B. Rosenberg, presidente de la FIU, comencé a trabajar para establecer una ruta directa del Trolley entre Doral y la FIU para dar servicio a los más de 5 mil estudiantes, docentes y personal que viven en nuestra ciudad y viajan a la FIU regularmente, por lo que estoy muy agradecida por la aprobación unánime del Concejo y espero con ansias el inicio de estas operaciones”, manifestó la concejal Fraga. La concejal Fraga explicó que esta ruta también servirá para aliviar el tráfico en la 107 avenida de Doral y es el resultado de un esfuerzo conjunto entre la Ciudad de Doral a través de su Departamento de Obras Públicas, la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Organización de Planificación de Transporte del Condado de Miami-Dade (TPO, por sus siglas en inglés). Para esta nueva ruta entre la ciudad de Doral y la FIU se comprarán dos vehículos nuevos y se espera proporcionar salidas cada 30 o 45 minutos a manera de poder atender las necesidades de transporte actuales y futuras de los usuarios de este nuevo servicio de transporte que viene a formar parte de las soluciones viales planteadas por la Ciudad de Doral.

Para la toma de esta decisión fue necesaria la realización de un estudio de factibilidades para el cual la Ciudad de Doral recibió una subvención

de la Organización de Planificación de Transporte del Condado de Miami-Dade (TPO) en el cual se analizó la implementación de alguna de las tres rutas posibles. La ruta 3, además de contemplar el recorrido más largo, brindar servicio al mayor número de pasajeros y cumplir con el requisito del 70% del acuerdo con la TPO, conecta a la ciudad de Doral con el campus principal de la FIU y el campus de ingeniería, proporciona acceso a los comercios de la 107 avenida y llega cerca de los puntos más importantes de la FIU. Sin embargo, hay que tomar en cuenta que el segmento de la 102 avenida entre las calles 74 y 66 no está completado aún. Ya aprobada esta nueva ruta de Trolley por la Ciudad de Doral los próximos pasos serán la preparación del informe final, realizar la enmienda al cuerdo inter-local con el condado de MiamiDade a través del TPO, desarrollar el horario de trabajo de estas unidades de transporte, adquirir los vehículos nuevos e instalar las paradas de Trolley para así tener listo todo para el inicio de las operaciones en el verano del 2018.

Back to basics: Community, Good Governance and Progress” was the title of the State of the City of Doral address, delivered by Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez on November 30th at City Hall, an occasion that this year had the solemnity expected for this type of events. In front of his family, the Council and City staff, elected officials from neighboring municipalities, Miami-Dade County, the School Board, personnel from the office of State and Federal Representatives, Doral residents and business owners, Mayor Bermudez recounted the results of his first year back in office and explained the game plan for 2018. “Anything that any mayor does is not possible without a great Council, these four people in front of you have done a fantastic job, have welcomed me back. I appreciate it” were his opening remarks. “It is not easy being an elected official, in Miami-Dade County it is a full contact sport sometimes. It is always great when you have a council that works together and moves in the right direction. Leadership cannot occur without a group that agrees to disagree and moves in the same direction when it matters.” The spirit of harmony, communication, respect and efficiency that has been present during all this year at City Hall was evident during this occasion, where the Mayor and Councilmembers praised the good work they have done together with the City Staff in 2017 and celebrated along with the community a job well done.

THE RESTORATION OF COMMUNITY CULTURE

After the speech Mayor Bermudez commented that this years’ experience back in office has been different than the first time, and the focus has been on changing the culture within the city. “The fantastic individuals that work in the City of Doral are changing the culture back to where we all wanted Doral to be, which is a place that remains open and transparent, where growth exists but is controlled and managed, a place that is efficient and effective, where things get done on time and on budget, and if they aren’t then we try to get better.” “The most important thing I think is the move towards getting us back to that culture of efficient and effective City, a City that grows responsibly. I think that is critical.” Referring to his campaign motto ‘Getting Doral back on track’ the Mayor considers that “we are almost there, we are working on it.” “We made a commitment to get Doral back on Track. We committed to changing the Culture. We committed to bringing back a culture of true transparency, planned growth, fiscal responsibility, efficiency and effectiveness in government. We made a commitment to changing the culture to what it should be. We are working towards that

goal.” The financial position of the City is strong, as the reserves have been kept at $36 million+ without cutting services or increasing taxes, maintaining the credit rating at AA. Mayor Bermudez looks forward to continue having “everybody, rowing in the same direction. Like a boat. I think we are getting there; we did it, this budget has been fantastic, we were able to do more with less, and we are getting back to finishing things on time. There’d be differences of opinions, which is ok that is what democracy is but also being respectful in the dais. I think we are about 80%. Now we got to finish the last 20% to get [the train] back on track.”

A LIST OF GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS

On the speech the Mayor described the many achievements of the 2017 for each department of the City. Among many others: • ISO 37210 Platinum certification from World Council on City Data, one of only 4 cities in the US to receive it, that proves the commitment to service efficiency. • Expansion of the Police Substation • Completion of Doral Legacy Park • New open roads, Improved traffic safety and enhanced enforcement of traffic laws • Improvement of Community Policing/Outreach Programs • Emergency Response. Managed response to Hurricane Irma before, during, and after the storm from the City’s Emergency Operations Center. • Code Compliance staffing on weekends and evenings for a safer community, enforcing code of ordinances to bring back cleanliness and order to residential and business area • Doral Pride and Civic Responsibility Program. • Step Up Your Health, Doral” initiative - City of a Billion Steps challenge. • “Million Orchid” Project • SPIN bike sharing program. • Expanded Trolley Routes and Transportation Master Plan update • Smart City Initiatives: Smart Benches; License

WHAT DOES 2018 HAVE IN STORE?

Bermudez is enthusiastic towards 2018, in spite of it being an Election year: “I think the most important thing with an election is that whoever runs does it respectfully, whoever wins understands that we have a vision and a culture. “We need to make sure the vision and culture we had when we left in 2012 which is the one that was in the vision of all of us, that culture, is not changed unnecessarily. We learned a very strong lesson, a difficult one that a lot of hard work can be changed a lot quicker than the Nine and a half years it took to build on these things, and there was a very quick change. Sometimes it is easier to break things down than to build them up. And I think This time regardless of who is running and who is in the council we all have to buy in to the idea that what we have built the right way has to stay because that is what is good for the community.” On the final remarks of his speech, Bermudez looks forward to the celebration of the 15 years since incorporation of Doral as an independent municipality. “And while many of you are now aware of all the great things Doral has accomplished in the past 12 months, I invite you to learn about everything we’ve been throughout the past 15 years. The most important job is making sure we move the city in the right direction. “We are better for making the decision to be a city. Schools, Parks, Police, Code Compliance, Planning and Zoning, even Roads are better as a result of being a city. We will be celebrating this community’s spirit, culture and

ROWING IN THE SAME DIRECTION

Elected officials and public had a positive reaction to the presentation by Mayor Bermudez and the plans for Doral for the upcoming year. People are satisfied with the work of the Council, and want to continue seeing the efforts of City officials and staff to keep Doral safe, improving and thriving, regardless of having an election cycle in process for 2018. It is the hope of all residents and business owners that unity and harmony continue prevailing to keep the “train on the right track”.

COUNCILMAN PETE CABRERA:

“I want to congratulate Mayor Bermudez for an excellent State of City Address but more important it is great to have him back. Almost 15 years ago us two founded this city with a clear vision to focus on action and results for our community, not political posturing for personal glory. For nine and half years we built an efficient, proactive

and productive City delivering parks and much needed infrastructure as well as managed growth which is the foundation for the great City we have today. Unfortunately after we left the City Council that vision and direction was lost and scandals and political posturing became the norm. Upon my return three years ago I did my part to help bring us back to our original vision but now with the return and help of Mayor Bermudez we have been working closely together to finally getting back on track and preparing the way for amazing future for our City. The best is yet to come.”

“Keeping our City strong is an ongoing endeavor. Many projects are now coming into fruition, which took a long time to plan. I was happy to see our Mayor talk about the completion of some of those projects, such as the direct Trolley Route between Doral and FIU, the Aquatics Center, and the completion of Glades Park. It is wonderful to see that the Council has united behind their realization, and I know with the hard work and dedication of our staff, we will soon see their fulfillment. Most importantly we continue to work for the benefit of our residents and improving the quality of life in the beautiful City of Doral everyday”

“The city is looking better than ever, people are enjoying the city and there is a lot more issues that come up because it is a big city and people want to live in there, but like the mayor said, traffic has improved. We are going to take it a lot further and keep improving it. It is not easy but we will find ways to do it together to make it happen. Reversible lanes is our next thing, and that reversible lanes should improve traffic through a lot of the more congested areas, but again we have to work at signalization past Doral so it all flows together. That is part of what we are doing, we are working closer than ever, the County, I as a Commissioner representing the area and the Mayor of Doral, along with the Vice Mayor and the Councilmembers. Unity is very important and to think about the people of Doral. I stand with the Mayor and support him on the issues that our residents and businesses are concerned about. Together we will continue making sure to solve them.”

Alcalde Bermúdez Presentó Estado de la Ciudad 2017 “Ningún hombre puede cruzar el mismo río dos veces, porque ni el hombre ni el agua serán los mismos” Heráclito

Volver a lo básico: Comunidad, Buen Gobierno y Progreso” fue el título del discurso sobre el Estado de la Ciudad de Doral, pronunciado por el Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez el pasado 30 de Noviembre en el Ayuntamiento, una ocasión que este tuvo la solemnidad que se espera en este tipo de eventos. Frente a su familia, los Concejales y empleados de la Ciudad, oficiales electos de municipalidades vecinas, Condado Miami-Dade, Junta Escolar, personal de Representantes Estatales y Federales, residentes y empresarios, Bermúdez resumió los resultados de este su primer año de vuelta en el cargo, y explicó los planes para el 2018. “Cualquier cosa que haga un alcalde solo es posible con un gran Consejo. Estas cuatro personas frente a ustedes han hecho un trabajo fantástico y me han dado la bienvenida Lo aprecio mucho” fueron sus palabras de inicio. “El liderazgo es exitoso si tiene un grupo que coincide en respetar las diferencias y seguir adelante cuando es necesario.” El espíritu de armonía, comunicación, respeto y eficiencia que ha estado presente durante este año en la Alcaldía, fue evidente en esta ocasión. Los oficiales electos celebraron junto a los empleados de la Ciudad, residentes y empresarios los buenos resultados del trabajo bien hecho en 2017.

RESTAURAR LA CULTURA COMUNITARIA

Luego del discurso, el Alcalde Bermúdez comentó que la experiencia este año nuevamente en el cargo ha sido diferente; el foco ha estado en transformar la cultura en la ciudad. “Los fantásticos empleados de la Ciudad de Doral están transformando la cultura nuevamente en lo que todos queremos que Doral sea [...] un sitio eficiente y efectivo, donde las cosas se hacen a tiempo y dentro del presupuesto y que cuando no sucede, todos tratamos de mejorar.” Con respecto a su eslogan de campaña “Recuperando el rumbo de Doral”, el Alcalde considera que “estamos casi allí, en eso estamos trabajando. Nos comprometimos con recuperar el rumbo y cambiar la cultura. Nos comprometimos con recuperar una cultura de transparencia, crecimiento planificado, responsabilidad fiscal, eficiencia y efectividad en el gobierno. Nos comprometimos con el cambio de cultura y estamos trabajando por ese objetivo”. La posición financiera de la Ciudad es fuerte, las reservas se han mantenido en más de $36 millones, sin cortar servicios ni incrementar los impuestos,

manteniendo la clasificación de crédito en AA. Bermúdez espera que “todos continuemos remando en la misma dirección, como en un bote. Creo que estamos en camino. ¿QUÉ ESPERAR PARA 2018?

Bermúdez es entusiasta para el 2018 a pesar de ser año electoral. “Es importante que quienes se postulen para los dos escaños y nosotros en el Concejo estemos conscientes de que el esfuerzo que hemos hecho para volver a la razón por la cual incorporamos la ciudad y tener la cultura que teníamos de transparencia y efectividad, de crecimiento controlado, de una manera positiva y de calidad de vida, continúe, sea quien sea los nuevos oficiales electos.” “Aprendimos una lección bastante difícil para nuestra ciudad. Cuando yo dije este mismo discurso en el 2012, en Noviembre, al terminar mi período, no

pensaba que se podía descarrilar tanto un tren que iba en una dirección positiva, o que se iban a poder eliminar tantas cosas que eran tan positivas. Aprendimos que puede ocurrir. Lo que tenemos que hacer esta vez es garantizarnos que esa cultura este claramente, que sea hasta cierto punto institucionalizada, no solamente con los códigos sino con los oficiales electos y que los residentes digan ‘queremos esto, queremos este tipo de gobierno’ y no cometamos un error donde nos descarrilemos.” “El tren esta como en un 80 %, nos falta un poquitico, pero como mencione en la campaña, estábamos descarrilados y estamos de nuevo en el carril, para ir mucho más eficiente y mucho más rápido hacia dónde queremos ir. “

TODOS EN LA MISMA DIRECCIÓN

Los oficiales electos y el público tuvieron una reacción positiva a la presentación hecha por el Alcalde y a los proyectos para el próximo año. Se muestran satisfechos con el trabajo realizado y esperan seguir viendo sus esfuerzos, junto al personal de la Ciudad, para mantener Doral seguro, progresando y mejorando, sin importar que 2018 sea año electoral.

Es el deseo de los residentes y empresarios que la unidad y armonía continúen prevaleciendo, para que este “tren” se mantenga en el carril.

Update on Attendance Boundary Changes in Doral Public Schools

Puesta al día sobre los cambios en las zonas de asistencia en las escuelas públicas de Doral

he 2017-2018 school year marks the 37th year that citizens are involved in the Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) process. School attendance boundaries regulate which school your child will attend depending on where you live. Last week, we had the first ABC Meeting where Region Superintendents presented our ABC members with the schools that will be the focus of attendance boundary change recommendations. There will be no attendance boundary changes for the upcoming school year. However, with the planned opening of two new schools in the City of Doral in the 2019-2020 school year, we will be scheduling a series of community meetings beginning January. At these community meetings we will discuss possible boundary changes to Doral public schools for the 2019-2020 school year. In order to provide the best for our students, your participation in the community meetings is not an option; it’s a necessity. Keeping our parents well informed and involved will not only help yield better results in the classroom, but positively impact the overall well-being of all Doral families. Las zonas de asistencia escolar regulan a qué escuela asiste su hijo dependiendo de dónde vive. La semana pasada, tuvimos la primera Reunión ABC donde los Superintendentes de la Región presentaron a nuestros miembros de ABC las escuelas que serán el foco de las recomendaciones de cambio de zonas de asistencia. No habrá cambios en las zonas de asistencia para el próximo año escolar. Sin embargo, con la apertura planeada de dos nuevas escuelas en la Ciudad de Doral en el año escolar 2019-2020, programaremos una serie de reuniones comunitarias a partir de enero. En estas reuniones hablaremos sobre los posibles cambios de zonas de asistencia en las escuelas públicas del Doral para el año escolar 2019-2020. Para brindar lo mejor a nuestros estudiantes, su participación en las reuniones comunitarias no es una opción; es una necesidad. Es importante que nuestros padres bien informados e involucrados porque no solo ayudará a obtener mejores resultados en nuestras clases, sino que también tendrá un impacto positivo en el bienestar general de todas las familias de Doral. It’s Now More than Ever to be Active By: Juan P. Casimiro, @JPCasimiro

eople get into local politics for reasons as varied as having a say in their community, trying to make a difference or wanting to change policies they don’t agree with. Getting involved can initially seem some what confusing if you don’t know where to begin, but with research, volunteering, and using your voice, you can become an involved citizen. I need to be honest, I’m not a big fan of politics, however I’ve discovered that you must make your voice be heard loud and clear.

RESEARCH AND MEET UP

If you’re new in town (which in Doral it appears that everyday someone new has arrived from another country) or just haven’t paid much attention, you may not know who is in charge of your local government. With the whole world at your fingertips, it’s easier than ever to find out. A simple Google search will pull up information about all the elected officials in your community. Knowing who represents you is a critical step to being an informed and active citizen. Whether you speak English or not, there really is no excuse for you not to research (do your homework) who you feel will do the best job in serving the City of Doral. After all, those who are eventually voting for will become our Public Servants. Sometimes we tend to overlook this responsibility and commitment.

DON’T MISS OUT ON THE PUBLIC MEETINGS (AND YES! SHARE YOUR CONCERNS, SPEAK UP)

City council, board of education, and other board meetings are typically open to the public. As boring as they might sound to some people, they will help you understand the processing, policies and functionality of our city government. Something I do is attend meetings to feel the pulse of what goes on around me. Seeing our Public Servants in action is one thing many of us don’t do enough. It’s unfortunately that we are quick to complain, but remove ourselves from the process. • City of Doral is good at allowing for audience input. Come prepared with questions about policies, rules or viewpoints you’d like clarification on.

STAY AND REMAIN CONNECTED!

Local community newspapers will keep you in the loop on the latest happenings in our city and in the political field. Subscribe to newsletters and papers online. Although I prefer to pick up and read a newspaper, today more than ever newspapers have become more successful and expansive digitally than in print. Follow your representatives and the media on Twitter and Facebook. My favorite site to learn more about candidates is LinkedIn. This is a platform a candidate should be on. Make sure visit the City of Doral’s website. Overall I give it a B+ rating. This is one place you can get to know almost everything about what’s happening and offered in the City of Doral.

VOLUNTEER - BUT NOT FOR BROWNIE POINTS!

The candidate you wholeheartedly believe in will

be grateful for as much or little time as you can give. Knock on doors, make phone calls, support events and help manage social media. This is an exciting opportunity to get to know other people in the organization and the community and to gain invaluable experience. Volunteering on a campaign will give you the understanding you need. If you think you would like running for office some day, than this could be your perfect internship.

STEP UP...VOTE!

There’s a lot of residents in the City of Doral that can’t vote because of their status in the USA. Sadly enough, you’d be surprise how low the voter turnout is for those of us who are eligible to vote. Voting is still the most effective way to have a say in your local government. • Don’t miss the Election Day • Make time in your schedule to vote in person, or mail in your ballot ahead of time.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE!

If you don’t like what your representatives are doing, take action. • There is no better way to create changes locally than by running for office yourself. Once you choose the office, fill out the paperwork, assemble a team, and begin knocking on doors. Word of advice: do it for the right reason. As the educator that I am I always teach our students that before venturing into anything, first DISCOVER your purpose. TRANSFORM your mindsets and CONNECT to the change and results you want to see!

Este es un lugar donde puedes conocer casi todo sobre lo que está sucediendo y se ofrece en la ciudad de Doral.

as personas entran en la política local por razones tan variadas como tener voz en su comunidad, tratar de hacer una diferencia o querer cambiar las políticas con las que no están de acuerdo. Involucrarse puede parecer inicialmente algo confuso si no sabe por dónde comenzar pero con investigación, como voluntario y usando su voz, puede convertirse en un ciudadano involucrado. Debo ser honesto, no soy un gran admirador de la política, sin embargo, he descubierto que algunas veces debemos hacer que nuestra voz se escuche alto y claro.

A pesar de lo aburrido que pueda sonar para algunas personas, lo ayudarán a comprender el proceso, las políticas y la funcionalidad de nuestro gobierno municipal. Algo que hago es asistir a las reuniones para sentir el pulso de lo que sucede a mi alrededor. Ver a nuestros servidores públicos en acción es una cosa que muchos de nosotros no hacemos siempre. Desafortunadamente, nos quejamos rápidamente, pero también nos alejamos del proceso. La entrada a cada una de las audiencias de la Ciudad de Doral es bien accessible. Como el educador que soy, siempre les enseño a mis estudiantes que antes de aventurarse en cualquier cosa, primero DESCUBRA cuál es su propósito. ¡TRANSFORME su mentalidad y CONÉCTESE al cambio y a los resultados que desea ver!

Si usted es nuevo en la ciudad (que en Doral parece que llega alguien nuevo de otro país cada día) o simplemente no ha prestado mucha atención, es posible que no sepa quién está a cargo de su gobierno local. Hoy en día, con todo el mundo a nuestro alcance, es más fácil que nunca descubrirlo. Realizando una simple búsqueda en Google, obtendrá información sobre todos los funcionarios electos en su comunidad. Saber quién lo representa es un paso fundamental para ser un ciudadano informado y activo. Ya sea que hable inglés o no, realmente no hay excusa para no investigar a quién cree que hará el mejor trabajo para servir a la Ciudad de Doral. Haga su tarea!!! Las tarjetas de regalo tiene muchas ventajas no sólo para la persona que compra el regalo, también para aquel que recibe el regalo. Pero, como suele suceder, no todo son ventajas.

Comprar un regalo es siempre complicado sobretodo si nos interesa quedar bien con esa persona y acertar en sus gustos. Consumer Reports concluye que el efectivo es el obsequio preferido, pero en los últimos años mucha gente está optando por regalar tarjetas de regalo en las ocasiones especiales, y esta Navidad parece no ser la excepción. Para muchos consumidores, las tarjetas de regalo y las tarjetas prepagadas son la alternativa perfecta, en vez de dar dinero en efectivo o volvernos locos buscando el regalo perfecto para estas fiestas. Al comparar los pros y los contras, Consumer Reports encontró que algunas tarjetas de regalo y tarjetas prepagadas son muy bien aceptadas y vienen con algunos beneficios, pero eso no quiere decir que no traen inconvenientes también. Las tarjetas de regalo y las tarjetas prepagadas, están ampliamente disponibles desde los supermercados a las farmacias y en los minoristas por Internet, pero por más prácticas que sean, a veces hay que pagar un precio, y eso no significa solo el precio de la compra. “Las tarjetas de regalo pueden ser la solución perfecta cuando simplemente no sabes qué hacer. Pero antes de comprarlas, lea la letra pequeña para más información de los cargos y restricciones sobre cuándo y dónde se pueden utilizar. Individual vs. Employer Life Insurance Comparison

lmost 70 percent of employees have access to life insurance through work, and 80 percent of those employees take advantage of this benefit, according to LIMRA, an insurance industry research organization based in Windsor, Connecticut. Half of U.S. workers have the option to purchase supplemental life insurance policies through their employer, and about 50 percent of this group buy it.1 If you only have a life insurance policy through work, however, you may not have nearly enough coverage. You also risk losing your insurance and paying higher premiums than you might need to. So you may want to consider an individual term life insurance policy even if you have access to life insurance through work.

EMPLOYER LIFE INSURANCE BENEFITS AREN’T GUARANTEED

When someone else — the company you work for — is subsidizing your coverage, you have less control over it than you might want over something as important as life insurance. Group plans can be changed, reduced, or dropped. The coverage often isn’t portable if you change jobs or get laid off. And these aren’t the only uncertainties that come with group coverage. For example, the cost of group coverage – the premiums you pay – is not guaranteed and the annual cost may increase over time. Like health insurance, you don’t want to go

without a life insurance policy for any period of time because you never know when you might need it.

YOU MIGHT NOT GET THE BEST POLICY RATE

According to LIMRA, most people think life insurance costs more than it really does, some over estimate the cost by as much as double the actual premium.¹ Factors that affect your life insurance premiums include age, health, driving record, and credit history. If you’re in very good health, you may receive a preferred rate on an individual policy. Group policies, by contrast, are not underwritten and do not exclude anyone, so they may be much more expensive. If you qualify as preferred or preferred plus, you may be able to buy an individual term life insurance policy that has several times the death benefit as your group coverage for the same annual cost. If you have significant health issues, however — maybe you have diabetes or are a cancer survivor — a group policy may be your only option as Group policies offer coverage to those who may otherwise be uninsurable.

BENEFITS OF A GROUP LIFE INSURANCE POLICY MAY BE LIMITED

Many group policies offer small benefits of $25,000 to $100,000. Typical group life insurance coverage through a company offers a benefit of one times your salary, with the option to buy more. While that’s better than nothing, it might not be

sufficient to protect your family. Such a low death benefit won’t come close to replacing the income you would have likely earned over a full career. While you may be able to purchase a limited amount of additional coverage that you pay for out of pocket beyond what your employer offers as a free benefit, for a total of three to four times your annual salary, total coverage still might not be nearly enough, especially if you are supporting a family. If you’re single, however, or if you’re married but your spouse works too and you don’t have or plan to have kids, that benefit might be sufficient. Speaking of spouses, if you insure your spouse through your employer’s life insurance, he or she may be underinsured, too. If your spouse stays home with the kids, for example, how much money would it take to pay someone to replace them as a caregiver until the kids are grown so you can continue to work? Individual life insurance can be a great complement to or substitute for any life insurance you’re eligible for through work. It’s a bit more trouble to apply, since you’ll have to go through medical underwriting, but it’s the best way to make sure you have as much coverage as you need, to lock in your premiums, and to make sure you’re still covered even if you stop working for your current company

ollege applications will review classes that a student has taken in high school to see if the courses were academically rigorous; transcripts to see how high the student’s grades were; SAT or ACT test scores to see the college potential of the student; and the ability of the student to write through an assigned essay. However, colleges also look at extracurricular activities to see if the student is a wellrounded and balanced person. Universities want students who will excel academically, but they do not want a student who will stay locked up in their dorm room doing nothing but studying. Colleges want who can become vibrant members of the student body by being involved in different activities that give life to a college campus. The extracurricular activities that a student partakes in speak to this aspect of admissions. Recently, I read an article about a student who was able to get into Yale University with “only” a 3.8 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Most of his advisors told him not to bother applying to Ivy League

Colleges. How did he get in? While still in high school, the student created a non-profit organization that helped students who were being bullied and that organization expanded to over 26 schools. Now, a graduate of Yale, he charges high school students up to $950 per hour to help them do the same and get into top colleges. Yes, it pays to do something different and big that will make you stand out. But not everybody is going to be able to accomplish the same nor can everybody afford those high consulting rates. When you decide on what extracurricular activities to pursue in high school, it is important to pick something that you really like. Pick an activity that you truly enjoy because if you pick something that simply “looks good” on your application, it’s going to be evident. Extracurricular could be a club, a sport, or a hobby. It could be something that you have done for years before getting to high school or something that you do for the first time ever.

Another reason for picking an activity that you really enjoy is because you want to stick to it as many years as you can. If you can participate all four years of high school- great. If there are limitations and you can only do a few years- that’s fine. Sticking to an extracurricular activity shows that you are dedicated and invested in that particular activity. It shows that there is something that you care about and are willing to put the time into it outside of schoolwork. It is also important that you show increased

Podría ser algo que hayas hecho durante años antes de llegar a la escuela secundaria o algo que haces por primera vez. Otra razón para escoger una actividad que realmente disfrutas es porque quieres mantenerte durante tantos años como puedas. Si puedes participar los cuatro años de la escuela secundaria, genial. Si hay limitaciones y solo puedes hacerlo unos años, está bien. Seguir una actividad extracurricular demuestra que usted estás dedicado e inmerso en esa actividad en particular. Muestra que hay algo que te importa y estás dispuesto a dedicarle tiempo fuera del trabajo escolar. También es importante que muestres una mayor responsabilidad. Sé más activo a medida que pase el tiempo. Asuma un papel de liderazgo ya sea presidente del club o capitán del equipo. responsibility. Be more active as time goes by. Take on a leadership role whether it be club president or team captain. Show that you are able to learn from your particular activity enough to lead your fellow students or team members. Colleges want student leaders! If for some reason you unable to follow these steps, you need to have a good explanation. Be sure to find a way to present that explanation to your college. For example, if you had to work during high school instead of participating in extracurricular activities- explain the financial necessity that drove you to that decision but also find ways to excel at work. Perhaps a customer commendation or a raise or even a promotion that will demonstrate leadership. Taking on employment while being in school is a true show of responsibility so be sure to show that in your application. Here’s another example of having a good explanation. A student I was advising decided to join the swim team in her senior year. She had never done any type of sport. Her explanation? She was taking a heavy load of honors and advanced placement classes on top of many academic related extracurricular activities. She took on swimming because she wanted something that would allow her to physically relieve her stress. She found that swimming allowed her to forget about everything else and that the water relaxed her completely. THAT is a great demonstration about self-balance that you can share with your college applications. Remember – chose activities that you really enjoy; dedicate yourself to those activities throughout high school; and take on a leadership role in those activities. Work or sports is considered an activity that also demonstrates responsibility, leadership, and balance. If you do something outside of the norm, be ready to explain your reasoning to the college. And if you manage to open your own business or a successful non-profit while in high school – then reach high for college admissions because you are a superstar!

ollen allergy sufferers may experience relief during winter months as most outdoor allergens disappear until spring. But our South Florida winters are mild and brief with tree pollination starting in February and people with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) sensitive to tree pollen may experience bothersome episodes of recurrent sneezing and runny nose early in the year. Indoor allergy sufferers, those allergic to house dust mites, dog or cat dander, may experience increased symptoms because we tend to spend more time indoors during winter months. Also, holiday decorations, travel and stress can all present challenges for people with allergies and asthma; for instance, Christmas trees can make some people sneeze or experience shortness of breath. It is unlikely that they are allergic to the tree itself, but the fragrance may be irritating and some trees harbor mold spores that trigger asthma and allergies that cause sneezing, itchy nose or wheezing. Ideally, use an artificial tree but, if you must have a real tree, let it dry in a garage or enclosed room for a week and have a non-allergic person give it a good shake prior to bringing it inside. Be sure to follow directions carefully when spraying artificial snow or flocking. Inhaling these sprays can irritate your lungs and trigger asthma symptoms. In addition, during winter months, dry indoor air may cause chapped lips, dry skin and irritated sinus passages. The moisture from a humidifier can

help dry sinus passages, but for people with indoor allergies, dust and mold from the humidifier may cause problems. The number one indoor allergen is the dust mite which thrives in high humidity. Keep the humidity level in your house between 3045% if possible. You can monitor the level with a hygrometer. Food allergies during the holidays is also an important concern. If you have a food allergy, holiday gatherings may be difficult to navigate. Be sure to ask about the ingredients used to make each dish. Be aware of cross-contamination that can occur during preparation. If you do not feel comfortable eating foods prepared by others, bring your own snacks or eat before you arrive. And of course, have your epinephrine auto-injector handy at all times. Cold weather activities such as cross-country skiing and other winter sports are more likely to cause exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Symptoms include wheezing, tight chest, cough, shortness of breath and, in rare cases, chest pain which usually begins within 5 to 20 minutes of exercising. Strenuous exercise, particularly in cold air, may cause these symptoms in most asthmatics. Some people with exercise-induced bronchoconstriction do not otherwise have asthma, and people with allergies may also have trouble breathing during exercise. To cope with this condition, the first step is to develop a treatment plan with your

physician. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction may be prevented with controller medications taken regularly or by using medicine before exercise. Once symptoms occur, they can be treated with rescue medications such as albuterol. In addition, warm-ups and cool downs may prevent or lessen symptoms. People with asthma should receive the yearly influenza vaccine as respiratory infections and viral respiratory infections in particular may exacerbate asthma symptoms. They should also strictly comply with prescribed controller asthma medications as winter months are associated with increased incidence of asthma exacerbations. People with atopic dermatitis or eczema may also experience winter related flare-ups of eczema. Dry winter air may dry the skin which triggers the itch/ scratch cycle typical of atopic dermatitis. People so affected should keep their skin hydrated with daily application of emollient creams immediately after bathing and more frequently as needed. Of interest, some recent studies provide strong support for the benefit of vitamin D supplementation in children with winter-related atopic dermatitis. hristmastime is a season of giving and of sharing our blessings with those less fortunate among us. It’s also a time of wonder and joy for children, but for some kids from lower-income families, it can be a sad reminder of their economically disadvantaged status, especially when their parents can’t afford to get them the kind of Christmas toys and gifts that they see other children enjoying. That’s where the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program comes in. Toys for Tots was created through the efforts of USMCR Major Bill Hendricks in 1947, as a way of distributing toys for children who would otherwise go without. The mission of Toys for Tots is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Seventy years later

after its creation, that mission continues because the need in our community is greater than ever before. As the Military Liaison and Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Military Affairs Board, it is my honor once again this year to support the Marines in this annual event. The Military Affairs Board and I will be hosting a toy collection benefiting Toys for Tots and Radio Lollipop on Dec. 17 from Noon to 5 p.m. at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40th St. in Miami. This is a true family event made for all ages. We will have a motorcycle and car show, food trucks, music, games and rides for the kids, all for an amazing cause, to give to those who need it the most. There is no better feeling than making a positive impact in the lives of so many for so little, so please take time out of your busy schedule and give to the children in our community. Help put a smile on a child’s face this holiday season by

bringing an unwrapped toy to our collection. May the season of giving bring you and your family great joy and happiness. A large percentage of small businesses operate as Limited Liability Companies—LLCs—but sometimes the tax benefits of an S corporation structure are financially more rewarding. (Sole proprietorships or partnerships usually end up reporting 100 percent

of the business’s earnings as subject to selfemployment tax, versus just the portion of income paid out as salary with an S corp structure.) The IRS allows some entities to retroactively elect the S corporation model for the year, which can result in significant savings by reducing the self-employment tax the business’s owners are subject to.

MOVE YOUR OFFICE BACK HOME

Some of the best tax planning involves shifting business expenses from the nondeductible category to the deductible. For businesspeople who spend most of their time on the road visiting clients, forgoing a rented office space for a setup in your home’s den can be a prudent move. First, you can take the home office deduction. Second, you can increase your automobile expense deductions, because the first and last trips of the day no longer qualify as a commute—so all trips in or out to visit clients would qualify as deductible.

MAKE ANY NEEDED REPAIRS

Under current IRS code, the entire cost of a repair made to a business asset is deductible. However, improvements to business property must be capitalized. To maintain the distinction between repairs and upgrades, try to separate the work—if you have money in the budget and repairs that you have been putting off, the end of the year is the time to do them. This will offset your taxable income for the year.

Winter Wonderland Extravaganza at Kendall Regional Medical Center The 5th Annual Winter Wonderland Extravaganza at Kendall Regional Medical Center was attended by more than 4,000, as the hospital welcomed the children and families of the community to this holiday festivity. The application for a Social Security number and card is sometimes overlooked in the paperwork that parents fill out in preparation for a child’s birth. Typically, the hospital will ask new mothers if they want to apply for a Social Security number for their newborn as part of the birth registration process. This is the easiest and fastest way to apply. The Social Security card typically arrives about a week to ten days after that little bundle of joy! You can learn about Social Security numbers for children by reading our publication, Social Security Numbers for Children, available at www. socialsecurity.gov/pubs. A child needs a Social Security number if he or she is going to have a bank account, if a relative is buying savings bonds for the child, if the child will have medical coverage, or if the child will receive government services. You’ll also need a Social Security number for a child to claim him or her on your tax returns. If you wait to apply, you will have to visit a Social Security office and you’ll need to: • Complete an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5); • Show us original documents proving your child’s U.S. citizenship, age, and identity; and • Show us documents proving your identity. A child age 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number must appear in person for the interview, even though a parent or guardian will sign the application on the child’s behalf. Children with disabilities are among our most vulnerable citizens. Social Security is dedicated to helping those with qualifying disabilities and their families through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. To qualify for SSI: • The child must have a physical or mental condition, or a combination of conditions, resulting in “marked and severe functional limitations.” This means that the condition(s) must severely limit your child’s activities; • The child’s condition(s) must be severe, last for at least 12 months, or be expected to result in death; and • The child must not be working and earning more than the Substantial Gainful Activity limit ($1,180 a month in 2018). If your child’s condition(s) does not result in “marked and severe limitations,” or does not result in those limitations lasting for at least 12 months, your child will not qualify for SSI. Family resources are also considered. If the parents of the child or children have more resources than are allowed, then the child or children will not qualify for SSI. Nosotros en el Seguro Social queremos decir que de ayudar a los niños sabemos una cosita o dos. Una de las cosas que más se les olvida a los padres llenar, en la preparación del papeleo para el nacimiento de un niño es la solicitud de una tarjeta y número de Seguro Social. Por lo general, el hospital le pedirá a las madres como parte del proceso de inscripción de nacimiento si quieren solicitar un número de Seguro Social para su recién nacido. Esta es la forma más fácil y rápida de aplicar. La tarjeta de Seguro Social por lo general llega alrededor de una semana a diez días después del pequeño paquete de alegría!
