“Step up your health, Doral”

DORAL: A HEALTHY CITY

A billion steps in a year is one of the goals of this initiative of Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, its objective: to have everyone walking!

he search for a healthier life style for all the residents of our city is the goal of the initiative “Step up your health, Doral”, this will be developed around three fundamental aspects: physical, mental and nutrition. The program will take place during the whole year and will encourage all the community to join, in search of a healthier life style. “We want for all residents to understand the importance of staying healthy and that we turn into a city that serves as an example and reference in respect to health and well-being at an international level,” Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez comment. This campaign includes educational, preventative, and health care components. For this reason the Parks and Recreation Department is working on the search of alliances with companies and local organizations that can provide the participants to the program with services such as: health tests, nutritional seminars, physical conditioning classes, among others. “One of our first allies is West Kendall Baptist Hospital. They will be offering different tests, for example body mass index, abdominal fat and nutritional index. In fact, I was the first participant and I did not only receive the results of my tests, but also the necessary guidance to attend my specific health needs,” comments Mayor Bermudez. Mayor Bermudez explains that with this program the intention is to educate the residents of the city in the importance of the physical and mental wellbeing. “We need to be educated in what is that we need to eat in order to have the correct nourishment, in the exercise that we must do and the medical care that we require to continue staying healthy.”

A BILLION STEPS

An important part of this health initiative is the challenge “A Billion Steps”, that the City of Doral is encouraging all its residents to participate in. “Our goal is to accumulate a billion steps among all of us, residents of Doral, throughout a year, in this way we will all work together to improve our physical and emotional wellbeing.” “I believe that this idea unites us as neighbors and community in reaching a common objective: to improve our health. I believe it is a fun way to unite us for a common goal as it is our own physical and mental well-being and the one of our families,” explains Mayor Bermudez. Given that the main idea of this campaign is that everyone living or working in Doral participate, it is the intention to engage the restaurants of the city, they will be proposed to include in their menus, healthy and

recommended dishes at the nutritional level, these will be identified with the logo of the initiative “Step up your health, Doral.” “I believe that it has been more than demonstrated that we are what we eat, and for this reason it is very important that we learn to eat adequately and in a balanced way, providing our bodies with the necessary nutrients for its correct function. For this reason, it will be great to have the collaboration of the restaurants in our city, plus the educational workshops that will be offered.” In line with this goal to turn Doral into a healthy region, Mayor Bermudez also made reference to a recent award that the program “Get Fit Doral” received recently. “We received the award “2017 City Livability Awards Program” during the 85th Annual Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors that took place less than a month ago in Miami Beach.” “This award recognized the leadership of the City of Doral in the development of programs that improve the quality of life of its residents, making emphasis in the leadership, the creativity and innovation, this shows us the success of the program “Get Fit Doral”, to which I would like to add that in this year’s 5K more than a thousandpeople participated, this shows evidence of the enthusiasm of our community in taking part in this type of initiatives.” Bermudez explains that the objective of the “Get Fit Doral” program is to create conscience about subjects related to health that affect the community and to offer alternatives to educate and promote a healthy life style. “This program focuses in improving access to healthy food, to increase the opportunities for physical activity, decrease the consumption of cigarettes and educate the public.”

“I created this program in 2006, as an initiative of the city to promote health and wellbeing, promoting a healthy life style among the residents and companies in the city. Today I feel proud that, more than 10 years later, “Get Fit Doral” continues to improve the lives of our residents, and is creating the way for other initiatives such as the program “Step up, Doral”, in which children, adults and elderly people will be able to participate. The launch of the “Step up your health, Doral” will take place during the opening of Doral Legacy Park, expected for this Summer, so we invite you to remain informed through the City of Doral website: www.cityofdoral.com, same as with the city’s Facebook page where we will be providing more information. For those of you that want to join the challenge of “One Billion Steps”, as of the month of August 2017 there will be an app both for your cell phone and in the City’s website that will be very easy to use and where you will be able to monitor your progress. “Through this application you will be able to link your steps with the City of Doral counter to add to the Billion steps,” finalized Mayor Bermudez. a búsqueda de un estilo de vida más saludable para todos los residentes de nuestra ciudad es la meta que persigue la iniciativa “Step Up Your Health, Doral”, la cual se desarrollará a través de tres aspectos fundamentales: físico, mental y de nutrición. El programa se estará desarrollando durante todo el año y alentará a toda la comunidad a unirse al mismo en la búsqueda de un estilo de vida más saludable. “Queremos que todos los residentes entiendan la importancia de mantenerse saludables y logremos convertirnos en una ciudad que sirva de ejemplo y referente en materia de salud y bienestar a nivel internacional”, así lo comentó el alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez. Esta campaña incluye un componente educativo, de prevención y de cuidado de salud, por lo cual el Departamento de Parques y Recreación está trabajando en buscar alianzas con empresas y organizaciones locales para proporcionar a los participantes en este programa servicios que incluirán exámenes de salud, seminarios de nutrición y clases de acondicionamiento físico, entre otros. “Uno de nuestros primeros aliados es el West Kendall Baptist Hospital que estará ofreciendo exámenes de, por ejemplo, índice de masa corporal, grasa abdominal e índice nutricional, por ejemplo. De hecho, yo fui el primer participante y no sólo recibí el resultado de estas pruebas, sino también la orientación necesaria para atender mis necesidades de salud”, comenta el alcalde Bermúdez. Explica el alcalde que se pretende instruir a los habitantes de la ciudad en la importancia del bienestar físico y mental. “Tenemos que estar educados en lo de que debemos comer para tener una alimentación adecuada, en el ejercicio debemos hacer y en los cuidados médicos que debemos seguir para mantenernos saludables”.

UN BILLON DE PASOS

Parte importante de esta iniciativa saludable es el reto de un “Billón de Pasos”, en la cual la Ciudad de Doral anima a todos los residentes a participar. “Nuestra meta es acumular un billón de pasos entre todos los doralinos a lo largo de un año, así todos trabajaremos juntos para mejorar nuestro bienestar físico y emocional”. “Yo creo que esta idea nos une como vecinos y como comunidad para conseguir un objetivo común: mejorar nuestra salud. Creo que es una forma amena de unirnos bajo un interés común como lo es el bienestar

físico y mental de cada uno de nosotros y de nuestras respectivas familias”, explica el alcalde Bermúdez. Como la idea principal de esta campaña es que participen todos los que residan o trabajen en Doral, se pretende involucrar a los restaurantes de la ciudad, proponiéndoles que incluyan en sus respectivos menús, platillos saludables y recomendados a nivel nutricional, los cuales se identificarían con el logo de esta iniciativa “Step Up Your Health, Doral”. “Yo creo que ya ha quedado más que demostrado que somos lo que comemos, por lo que es importante que aprendamos a alimentarnos adecuada y balanceadamente, dándole nuestro cuerpo los nutrientes necesarios para su funcionamiento. Para lograr esto sería estupendo la colaboración de los restaurantes ubicados en nuestra ciudad, sumados a los talleres educativos de nutrición que serán ofrecidos”. Alineada con esta meta de convertir a Doral en una región saludable, el alcalde Bermúdez también hizo referencia a la premiación recientemente recibida por el programa “Get Fi Doral”. “Recibimos este galardón, denominado “2017 City Livability Awards Program”, durante la 85th Convencional Anual de Alcaldes de Estados Unidos, realizada hace poco menos de un mes en la ciudad de Miami Beach”. “Este premio reconoce el liderazgo de la Ciudad de Doral en el desarrollo de programas que mejoran la calidad de vida de sus habitantes, centrándose en el liderazgo, la creatividad y la innovación, lo cual nos demuestra el éxito del programa “Get Fit Doral”, a lo que me gustaría agregar que, en el 5K de Doral de este año, participaron mil personas, lo que evidencia el entusiasmo

de nuestra comunidad por formar parte de este tipo de iniciativas”. Bermúdez explica que el objetivo de “Get Fit Doral” es crear conciencia sobre temas relacionados con la salud que afectan a la comunidad y ofrecer actividades para educar y promover un estilo de vida saludable. “Este programa se enfoca en mejorar el acceso a alimentos saludables, aumentar las oportunidades de actividad física, disminuir el consumo de cigarrillos y educar al público”. “Creé este programa en el 2006, como una iniciativa de la ciudad para promover la salud y el bienestar, fomentando una vida saludable entre los residentes y las empresas en la ciudad. Hoy, me siento orgulloso de que, más de 10 años después, “Get Fit Doral” continúe mejorando las vidas de nuestros residentes, dando paso a otras iniciativas como el programa “Step Up, Doral”, en la podrán participar desde niños hasta adultos de la tercera edad. El lanzamiento de la iniciativa “Step Up Your Health, Doral” se realizará durante la apertura del Doral Legacy Park, pautada para este verano, así que le recomendamos mantenerse al tanto a través de la página web de la ciudad: www.cityofdoral.com, así como del sitio de Facebook, donde se irá dando mayor información. The “Red-Light” Cameras On Traffic Lights Will Be Reactivated During an initial phase that will last until September 1st, 2017, drivers will not be receiving traffic tickets, they will only receive warning notifications about the fact that they have incurred a trafficcitation.

“

Drive carefully!” is the message that the City of Doral is trying to send to all drivers after having approved the reactivation of the “red-light” cameras that were installed on the traffic lights back in 2011. The warning period will last 60 days, starting on July 1st, 2017. The decision was taken during the June 14th, 2017 Council Session, where Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez clarified that during this initial phase, the owners of vehicles will only receive a warning (not a traffic ticket) if their vehicle is captured taking a red-light by the camera.,. “The intention with this warning period is to allow the drivers the time to get used to this change without being punished financially.” On September 1st, 2017 traffic tickets will come into effect. The cameras that have been reactivated are at the following intersections: NW 87th Avenue and NW 36th Street, NW 79th Avenue and NW 36th Street, NW 97th Avenue and 41st Street and NW 107th Avenue and 41st Street. Mayor Bermudez explained that this decision took place because public safety is a priority for Doral. He clarified that the intention is not to generate more income for the City, but a way to keep it safer and organized through the fulfillment of the law and regulations. “We need to remember that -running a red light is very dangerous and it can cause severe car accidents.” The way this program works can be summarized in the following way: when a driver gets in the intersection after the traffic light has turned to red, the camera captures still images and a video of the event. After the initial processing through a wireless and safe transfer, the Doral Police Department receives the images and the video as evidence and determines if a citation should be issued. After the owner of the vehicle receives the traffic ticket, he will have the option to dispute the violation, transfer the responsibility of the incident, or pay the fine on-line, by phone or by mail. These “red-light” cameras will be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will be managed again by American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the same company that managed them when the program was active from July 2011 to January 2015. In the following days, the City of Doral will be distributing informational material about the program and will hold several public workshops where the Doral Police Department will answer questions and concerns from the community. ARE THEY REALLY EFFECTIVE?

For Mayor Bermudez, the statistics speak - for themselves about the importance to re-activate this program. An analysis, about the program, conducted by ATS, the company that owns and operates the cameras, states that since its inception on July 2011 until July 2014 the behavior of - drivers improved throughout time. For example, the study indicates a 5% rate in second-offenses. This low rate of second offenses means that 95% of the offenders that got a ticket and paid for it did not receive a second ticket, which indicates a change in the behavior of the drivers that received citations in stopping at a red light. It is also important to highlight that 73% of the total infractions issued were to vehicles with tags outside of Doral. The statistics of the National Highway Transit Safety Administration (NHTSA) were also analyzed in order to take the decision to re-activate this program. These statistics show that Florida is the third state with the highest incidence of accidents and deaths caused for ignoring -a red light. In fact, these figures show that between 2011 and 2015, 344 people died for this reason, in our state. Nevertheless, Councilwoman Christi Fraga did not agree with these arguments, and was the only member of the City Council to oppose the reactivation of the cameras. One of her main reasons was also based on statistical data. “I did not feel

comfortable making my decision based only on the data provided by ATS, the company that owns and operates the cameras, and who also stands to gain from their reactivation. Therefore, I decided to request my own statistical data, from the Doral Police Department.” According to this data, explained Councilwoman Fraga, when the red-light cameras were in operation, both the total number of accidents and the number of rear-end accidents doubled at the intersections where the cameras were installed. “If we analyze the traffic accidents that took place in Doral at the intersections where the cameras were in operation between the years 2011 and January 2015 the total amount of accidents increased progressively on an annual basis from 130 per year in 2011 to 276 per year in 2014. That is a 112% increase or more than double the accidents,” explains Councilwoman Fraga. “The statistics for rear-end accidents are also troubling.” Councilwoman Fraga explained that more rear end accidents take place because when the driver notices that the light is going to change, the driver tends to stop in a violent and unexpected way to avoid being ticketed. “The amount of rear-end accidents at the red-light camera intersections increased from 60 to 119 when the program was operational. Again, that is also a 118% increase in accidents. Given all these statistics, I failed to see the full benefit of redlight cameras.” “I understand that safety in our City and education about the correct way to drive is important, however, I believe that there are more effective ways to do it that do not always have to imply economic penalties, which in general terms instead of making our residents, professionals, and commuters understand that they should obey the law so their community can operate properly, forces them to do it out of anger and only so that they will not be financially affected. Moreover, the statistics I received from Doral Police showed me that we only end up with double the amount of accidents at red-light camera intersections and more rear-end crashes, therefore, I was not supportive of reactivating the program.” “I think that the correct way to preserve the safety and order in the city is to have a better connection between the community and the police, and our Police Department has already been nationally recognized for doing just that extremely well. I think that we all need to understand the importance of being good citizens, of increasing our police force and this is a much higher goal that goes much further than just trying to avoid a traffic ticket,” states Councilwoman Christi Fraga.

¡A manejar con Precaución!” es el mensaje que intenta transmitir la Ciudad de Doral a los conductores al haber aprobado la reactivación del programa de cámaras de luces rojas, comenzando con un período de advertencia de 60 días a partir del 1ero. de julio del 2017. La decisión fue tomada en la sesión del 14 de junio del 2017 y el alcalde de Doral, Juan Carlos Bermúdez, aclaró que, en esta fase inicial, los propietarios de vehículos sólo recibirán un aviso (no una multa) si su vehículo es captado por la cámara cuando se pasa una luz roja. “Este período de advertencia tiene la intención de dar a los conductores tiempo para adaptarse a este cambio sin ser sancionados financieramente”. Ya a partir del 1ero. de septiembre del 2017 se empezará a imponer multas. Estas cámaras de seguridad han sido re-activadas en las siguientes intersecciones de la ciudad de Doral: 87 avenida con 36 calle, 79 avenida con 36 calle, 97 avenida con 41 calle y 107 avenida con 41 calle. Explicó el alcalde Bermúdez que esta decisión fue tomada porque la seguridad pública es la prioridad de Doral. Aclaró que no se trata de generar un flujo de ingresos para la Ciudad, sino de una manera de mantener nuestra comunidad más segura y organizada, a través del cumplimiento de las leyes y regulaciones. “Recordemos que pasarse una luz roja puede ser muy peligroso y causar graves accidentes vehiculares”. El funcionamiento de este programa se puede resumir de la siguiente forma: cuando un conductor entra en una intersección después de que la luz se ha puesto roja, la cámara captura imágenes fijas y video del evento. Después del procesamiento inicial a través de una transferencia inalámbrica y segura, la Policía de Doral recibe las imágenes y los videos como evidencia y determina si una citación es emitida. Tras recibir la multa, el propietario del vehículo tendrá la opción de disputar la violación, transferir la responsabilidad por el incidente o pagar la multa en línea, por teléfono o por correo. Estas cámaras de “luces rojas” están operativas las 24 horas del día, los siete días a la semana y volverán a ser administradas por la empresa American Traffic Solutions (ATS), la misma que lo hizo anteriormente cuando este programa estuvo activo desde julio del 2011 hasta el mes de enero del 2015. En los próximos días, la Ciudad de Doral estará distribuyendo material informativo sobre este programa y celebrará reuniones públicas donde los funcionarios policiales de Doral responderán las preguntas y preocupaciones de la comunidad. ¿SON REALMENTE EFECTIVAS?

Para el alcalde Bermúdez, las estadísticas hablan por sí solas de la importancia de re-activar este programa. Un análisis realizado por la empresa ATS del programa desde su inicio en julio del 2011 hasta julio de 2014 mostró que el comportamiento del conductor había ido mejorando a través del tiempo. Por ejemplo, el estudio indica una tasa de re-incidencia del 5%. Esta baja tasa de repetición significa que el 95% de los infractores que obtuvieron una multa y la pagaron no recibieron una segunda violación, lo que indica un cambio en el comportamiento del conductor para detenerse en rojo. Es importante destacar que el 73% de todas las infracciones fueron emitidas a vehículos matriculados fuera de la ciudad de Doral. Las estadísticas de la Administración Nacional de Seguridad en el Tránsito de Carreteras también fueron analizadas para tomar la decisión de re-activar este programa, pues las mismas indican que Florida es el tercer estado más con mayor incidencia de accidentes y muertes causados por no respetar una luz roja. De hecho, estas cifras señalan que entre el 2011 y el 2015 fallecieron 344 personas por esta causa en nuestro estado. Sin embargo, la concejal Christi Fraga no estuvo de acuerdo con estos argumentos y fue el único miembro del Concejo Municipal en oponerse a que estas cámaras fueran re-activadas y una de sus principales razones también se basa en datos estadísticos. “La verdad es que no me sentía confortable en hacer mi decisión usando solamente datos que fueron proveídos por ATS, la compañía que es dueña, y que opera las cámaras, y que también se beneficiará como resultado del restablecimiento de estas. Por lo tanto, decidí pedir mis propios datos, en esta ocasión, del Departamento de Policía de Doral.” Según esos datos, explicó la concejal Fraga, mientras estás cámaras de luces rojas estuvieron operativas, los accidentes totales y en los que un auto le da a otro por detrás aumentaron en más del doble en las intersecciones donde las cámaras estaban instaladas “Si analizamos el reporte de accidentes de tráfico ocurridos en Doral en las intersecciones donde estaban habilitadas las cámaras entre los años 2011 y 2014

nos vamos a dar cuenta de que los accidentes fueron aumentado anualmente desde 130 en el 2011 hasta 276 en el 2014. La Noche Nacional Contra el Crimen fue introducida por la Asociación Nacional de Vigilancia del Pueblo (NATW) en 1984, y se celebra a nivel nacional, el primer martes del mes de agosto.

Como cada año el evento contará con la exhibición de vehículos policíacos, demostraciones de las actividades de los diferentes departamentos, como la unidad canina, las patrullas motorizadas y los exploradores. Además de charlas impartidas por los oficiales

Como en años anteriores, se estará donando a los residentes

de Doral mochilas con útiles escolares, lo cual representa una ayuda al presupuesto familiar que, generalmente, se ve afectado por las compras relativas al regreso a clases. Changes To The Rules On The Regulations On The Placement Of Signs In Doral

The intent of the City of Doral is that the Ordinance on signs stays within the constitutional framework. For the residents, the most important thing is to keep the order and cleanliness of the city. By Edda Pujadas @epujadas

he objective of the update to the Land Development Code Chapter 80 of the City of Doral, that was proposed by City Council is to respect the right of expression of the people, through signs, according to the Constitutional rights at the same time that we keep the regulations that guarantee a good organization and image of our city. This was explained by the Director of Planning and Zoning of the City of Doral, Julian Perez, who stated that the intention of this update in the regulations related to the use of signs is to adapt to the changes and new developments in our city, both in the residential and commercial areas. “We have experimented big variations in the recent years and we must adapt the ordinance to those variations so it is an effective one and it complies with its objectives.” Perez stated that the correct interpretation and implementation of the update to this ordinance will help alleviate the visual disorder and enhance the identity of the community. “The proposed modifications are consistent with the Comprehensive Plan of the City’s Development Code and also w i t h the Constitution of the State of Florida and the Nation.” “It is very important to take into consideration that our ordinance has to adapt to the legal frame of the Constitution of the United States, this implies that we cannot regulate the content of the sign, we have to be neutral and do not discriminate. We cannot be exposed to legal suits due to violations to the freedom of speech established in the First Amendment.” Perez stated that it is important that our sign ordinance is a balanced one, respecting the rights established by our Constitution and that at the same time takes into consideration these two issues: the needs of our merchants and residents when they use this type of communication and the regulations regarding the organization of our city.”

“The type of sign, size, height, location, illumination and duration in time must continue being aspects that are regulated by the City of Doral, but we are trying to simplify the way in which we apply these requisites so these signs can comply with the mission for which they are placed and therefore avoid violations to the freedom of speech of every citizen.” Perez clarified that the articles that are to be updated are from the first one to the fifth one and the fact that this amendment had been approved in its First Reading does not imply that the actual rules have expired. “While the implementation of the changes is discussed and it is determined if the changes are feasible, all signs in our city must be placed according to the ordinance that is valid today.”

Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, reiterated what the Director of Planning and Zoning stated when he insisted in the fact that the actual rules remain valid until the proposed amendments are approved or denied, because the idea is not to create a legal vacuum that brings disorganization to the city. “The changes that are recommended for this ordinance can be summarized mainly as a legal issue, because we must keep all the rules and regulations of our city within the legal frame

of the Constitution of the United States that is the highest law that applies at a National level,” added the Mayor. Vice Mayor Pete Cabrera stated that the need to modify this ordinance is merely legal. “We must adhere to the statues of the Supreme Court of the United States, if we do not do it we will be in violation of federal legislation and we will be exposed to law suits, so this is simply something that, not only us, but all the cities must do.” Council Woman Christi Fraga considers that it is wrong to take rushed decisions. “I believe that we have not analyzed the information in its totality and that before we try to modify the code we need to complete a series of studies and research. Even when it is true that we need to stay within the constitutional legal frame, it is also important that we continue watching over the order and cleanliness of the city. We actually have a code that we must continue to respect until it is decided if the proposed modifications are approved,” she added. The need to comply with the constitutional mandates is also explained by Council Woman Ana Maria Rodriguez who clarifies that as the City of Doral Council, they have the obligation to adhere to the laws of the Nation, but that before they take any decision, they will analyze the current ordinance, point by point during the workshops with the residents and the staff of planning and zoning. She was also clear in the fact that while all the changes are analyzed, the current regulations are still in effect. Michelle Jordan resides and works in Doral and she believes that it is important to keep control on the regulations regarding the placement of signs. “We all have the right to express ourselves through signs, within the law, but I do believe that the law and the processes to get the corresponding permits should be less strict and complicated than what they are today.” For Simon Jimenez, who lives in Doral 6 years ago, the signs are a form of expression that allows us to let others know our ideas or the products and services that we offer, but this freedom of expression or promotion should not be disrespectful of the right of others to enjoy a clean and organized city. Joselyn Pereira decided to come live in Doral almost two years ago because she considered that it was a clean and organized city, for this reason even when she understands the right of expression of the people that place signs, she is also concerned about the fact that the regulations regarding signs are followed, so we can avoid damaging our quality of life and the value of our city.

Natale Campagna, who resides in Doral several years ago considers that the regulations and ordinances regarding the placement of signs keep the uniformity and elegance of our city, for this reason the proposed changes, updates and modifications to the municipal code should be analyzed very carefully. espetar el derecho de expresión de las personas a través de los letreros, de acuerdo al marco constitucional y a la vez mantener las regulaciones que garanticen la organización y buena imagen de nuestra localidad es el objetivo de la actualización del capítulo 80 del Código de Desarrollo de la Ciudad, propuesto por la Alcaldía de Doral. Así lo explicó el director de zonificación y planificación de la Ciudad de Doral, Julián Pérez, quien manifestó que esta propuesta de actualización de nuestras regulaciones relacionadas al uso de letreros busca adaptarse a los cambios y desarrollos nuevos de nuestra ciudad, tanto en el ámbito residencial como comercial. “Hemos experimentado grandes variaciones en los últimos años y debemos adaptar la ordenanza a ellas para que sea efectiva y cumpla su objetivo”. Comenta Pérez que la correcta interpretación e implementación de la actualización de esta ordenanza ayudará a evitar el desorden visual y mejorar la identidad de la comunidad. “Las modificaciones propuestas son consistentes con Plan Integral de la Ciudad y el Código de Desarrollo e incluso con la Constitución del Estado de la Florida y de la nación”. “Hay que tomar en cuenta que es muy importante que nuestra ordenanza se adapte al marco constitucional de Estados Unidos, lo que implica que no podemos regular el contenido, debemos ser neutrales y no discriminarlo. No podemos exponernos a demandas legales por violar la protección a la libertad de expresión establecida en la Primera Enmienda”. Señala Pérez que es importante que nuestra ordenanza de letreros sea balanceada, respetando los derechos establecidos en la Constitución y a la vez se ajuste a dos aspectos: las necesidades de los comerciantes y residentes a utilizar este tipo de comunicaciones y las regulaciones en cuanto a organización de nuestra ciudad”. “El tipo de letrero, su tamaño, altura, ubicación, iluminación y duración en el tiempo deben seguir siendo aspectos

regulados por la Ciudad de Doral, pero estamos tratando de simplificar la aplicación de estos requisitos para que los letreros puedan cumplir la misión con la que son colocados y evitar violaciones al derecho de expresarse de todos los ciudadanos”. Pérez aclaró que los artículos que se pretenden actualizar son del primero al quinto y que el hecho de que esta enmienda haya sido aprobada en primera lectura no implica que la regulación actual no siga vigente. “Mientras se discute y determina la posibilidad de implementación de los cambios planteados, todos los letreros de nuestra ciudad deben ser colocados según lo establece la ordenanza actual”. Por su parte, el alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez reiteró lo señalado por el director de zonificación y planificación, al insistir en que la regulación actual sigue vigente hasta que se aprueben o no las enmiendas propuestas, pues la idea no es crear un vacío legal que propicie la desorganización de la ciudad. “Los cambios recomendados a esta ordenanza se resumen, principalmente, en un tema legal, pues necesitamos mantener todos

los reglamentos y regulaciones de nuestra ciudad dentro del marco de la Constitución de Estados Unidos que es la máxima ley que nos rige a nivel nacional”, agregó el mandatario doralino. Por su parte, el vice alcalde Pete Cabrera manifestó que la necesidad de modificar esta ordenanza es netamente legal. “Debemos ajustarnos a los estatutos de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos, pues de lo contario estaríamos violando leyes federales y exponiéndonos a demandas, así que es, simplemente, algo que debemos hacer no sólo nosotros, sino todas las Ciudades”. La concejal Christi Fraga considera que no deben tomarse decisiones apresuradas. “Creo que no hemos analizado la información por completo y que antes de tratar de modificar el código debemos realizar una serie de estudios e investigaciones. Si bien es cierto que tenemos que mantenernos dentro del marco constitucional es igualmente importante que sigamos velando por el orden y la limpieza de la ciudad. Actualmente, tenemos un código que debe seguir respetándose hasta que se decida si se aprueban las modificaciones planteadas”, agregó. La necesidad de apegarse a los mandatos constitucionales también es explicada por la concejal Ana María Rodríguez quien aclaró que, como Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Doral, están en la obligación de apegarse a las leyes de nación, pero que antes de tomar cualquier decisión se analizará punto por punto de la ordenanza durante las mesas de trabajo con los vecinos y el personal de la dirección de zonificación y planificación. También aclaro que, mientras se analizan los cambios planteados, siguen activas las regulaciones actuales. Para la concejal Claudia Mariaca, quien fue enfática en señalar que hoy en día nos seguimos rigiendo por el código vigente, es muy importante la participación de los vecinos en los talleres que se estarán realizando sobre este tema. “Nosotros, como autoridades de Doral, debemos regirnos por las leyes constitucionales y a la vez esmerarnos por mantener el orden y la limpieza en la ciudad, pero también

queremos que los residentes y comerciantes opinen y aporten ideas, aunque sea mandándonos emails con sus comentarios”.

LOS RESIDENTES OPINAN

Michelle Jordan reside y trabaja en Doral y considera que es importante mantener el control y las regulaciones en cuanto a la colocación de carteles. “Todos tenemos derecho a expresarnos a través de letreros, dentro del marco de la ley, pero creo que las leyes y procesos para obtener los permisos necesarios deberían ser menos rígidos y complicados que en la actualidad. Para Simón Jiménez, quien viven en Doral desde hace seis años, los letreros son una forma de expresión que permite dar a conocer nuestras ideas o los productos y servicios que ofrecemos, pero esta libertad para promocionarnos no debe irrespetar el derecho de los demás de disfrutar de una ciudad limpia y organizada. Joselyn Pereira decidió vivir en Doral desde hace casi dos años por considerar que era una ciudad limpia y organizada, por lo que si bien entiende el derecho de expresión de las personas que colocan los letreros, también le preocupa que las regulaciones en cuanto a la colocación de carteles

sigan cumpliéndose para evitar que merme nuestra calidad de vida y el valor de nuestra ciudad. Natale Campagna, quien lleva muchos años como habitante de Doral, considera que las regulaciones y ordenanzas en cuanto a la colocación de letreros mantienen uniformidad y elegancia en la ciudad, por lo que deben analizarse con mucho cuidado los cambios, modificaciones y actualizaciones que se están planteando al código municipal que rige esta área. Anakarina Esser le da un gran valor a los letreros, al considerar que son parte de la memoria gráfica de la ciudad y un excelente medio de publicidad y propaganda, sin embargo esto no significa que piense que su colocación debe hacerse sin ajustarse a ciertas regulaciones para evitar el desorden. “El orden siempre debe prevalecer”. A Mercedes León siempre le ha preocupado el orden y la limpieza de la ciudad. “El derecho a expresarse debe ir de la mano con el derecho a vivir en un sitio organizado y uno de los aspectos más

graves de la colocación de letreros, especialmente, los de publicidad temporal, es que la gente tiende a no recogerlos después del tiempo en que son válidos”. La Ciudad de Doral implementa póliza permanente de permiso por paternidad

a ciudad ha aprobado la implementación de una póliza permanente de permiso por paternidad pagada para los empleados de la ciudad. Esta iniciativa, liderada por la consejera Ana María Rodríguez, fue aprobada por primera vez en agosto de 2016 como una póliza piloto de un año, la cual sería sometida de nuevo a consideración del concejo municipal luego de haber evaluado los costos generados a la ciudad. Doral es el primer municipio del Condado de Miami-Dade en implementar esta clase de póliza, la cual les permite a los nuevos padres empleados de la ciudad recibir hasta cuatro semanas de permiso pagado. “He sido testigo de la dificultad y el esfuerzo relacionado a tener que tomar una decisión entre no recibir un salario o posiblemente perder mi empleo y abandonar a mi hijo tan sólo unos días luego de haber nacido”, comentó la consejera Ana María Rodríguez. “Para mí, éste es un verdadero problema moral y económico que ninguna familia debería pasar.” Doral se une al creciente grupo de ciudades y condados como MiamiDade, Miami Beach, West Palm Beach y Wellington que ya han implementado póliza de permiso por paternidad para ayudar a sus empleados a que llevan vidas más balanceadas tanto en el hogar como en el lugar de trabajo.

Doral Makes Parental Leave Policy Permanent

This initiative, championed by Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez, was first approved back in August 2016 as a one-year pilot to be brought back for Council’s review after evaluating the cost to the city. Doral was the first municipality in Miami-Dade County to implement this type of policy, allowing for new parents employed by the City to receive up to four weeks of paid leave. “I experienced firsthand the difficulty and strain of having to choose between not getting a paycheck or potentially losing my job and leaving my child mere days after birth,” said Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez. “For me this is truly a moral and economic issue that no family should have to face.” Doral joins a growing group of other city and county governments like MiamiDade, Miami Beach, West Palm Beach and Wellington, that are also establishing parental leave policies to help their employees live more balanced lives at home and work.

Common Questions and Answers from Allergy Sufferers If this is allergy season, why am I sick all year round?

The simple answer is because you live in South Florida. In other parts of the country, allergy sufferers get a break during the winter and then start to suffer suddenly in the springtime or in the fall. This is why you see so many allergy medication commercials starting in April every year. Other than our delightful winter, we really don’t have seasons here. Consequently, many types of pollens, grass pollen for instance, are in the air the year round. Also, in South Florida, indoor allergens such as mold spores, dust mites, and animal dander are major causes of allergic symptoms.

How do I know I am having allergies as opposed to just having constant cold symptoms?

This is what makes it hard to diagnose and treat allergies in South Florida. Since most important allergens are present year round, it often takes a good history from the patient to help determine the cause of the symptoms. “Do you have a dog? Do you have carpeting in your bedroom (dust mites thrive in carpets)? Do you have any mold growth in your apartment?” Questions like these help determine the course of therapy for a patient.

How is allergy testing done?

What medications are used to treat allergies?

Testing can be done in two ways, skin testing and blood (serum) testing. Allergy specialists typically perform allergy skin testing, as this is considered the most sensitive and cost-effective method. Also, skin testing has the advantage of giving immediate results. Patients must be off all antihistamine medications prior to testing, as this will affect the results. Most general practitioners do serum testing.

What if the medications don’t work, or if I just don’t like taking medications on a long-term basis?

As mentioned above, allergy testing is important in this regard. Avoidance of allergens can help alleviate many of these symptoms. Allergy specialists are specifically trained to teach patients avoidance techniques for allergens such as dust mite. The physician and patient have to work together to limit exposure to the offending substances. In addition to this, specific allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) can be an effective tool to decrease symptoms and limit the need for medications.

How do allergy shots work and how are they given?

What symptoms are typical of allergies?

A runny nose, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, nasal/ eye itching, sneezing, and coughing are common symptoms of upper respiratory allergies (allergic rhinitis). Asthma symptoms can also be caused by allergy. As you can see, these are similar symptoms to what you would get with a viral upper respiratory infection (common cold). The main difference would be that common cold symptoms usually go away within a week.

Many over-the-counter medications are available to treat allergy symptoms. These include nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines. Available non-sedating antihistamines, which are usually taken once per day, are preferred over other antihistamines which have many more side effects including sleepiness and dry mouth. Nasal steroids are very effective for many patients. Most people do very well on them; however, about 10 or 20% of patients will get side effects such as headaches and nosebleeds. There are prescription medications, such as nasal antihistamines and leukotriene modifiers, which are safe and effective for many patients.

Put simply, specific allergen immunotherapy works by gradually exposing the body to increasing dosages of allergens so that the immune system learns to ignore them. Typically, the shots are given once or twice a week for a few months, and then eventually spread out to once per month. The once per month therapy usually goes on for three or four years, since a full course of therapy may potentially lead to a permanent cure. Interestingly, allergy shot therapy began in the early 1900s. Over the years, allergen extracts have been refined to become more effective and safer.

I have heard of other forms of immunotherapy like sublingual drops. Are they effective?

leads to increased cost. Also, it is not clear that sublingual therapy can be effective for those allergic to multiple allergens. Lastly, sublingual drops are not FDA approved, and thus are not covered by the great majority of insurance plans. Sublingual tablets are available and are FDA approved, so they could be covered by insurance plans. However, at the present time there are only tablets available for certain limited pollens. Sublingual therapy does have one advantage in that the therapy can be given at home. The great majority of physicians will only allow allergy shots to be given under direct supervision in their offices so that the patient can be observed after each dose.

Do allergy shots work for asthma?

Multiple scientific studies over the years have proven that allergy shots can be effective for asthma. However, because of the small possibility of allergic reactions to the shots, asthma patients must be well controlled on medications prior to starting the allergy shots. After the allergen extract starts to take effect, medication use can then be slowly reduced (in consultation with the doctor) in many cases.

Can allergen immunotherapy also be effective for insect sting allergy, food allergy, or medication allergy?

Yes, no, and no in that order. I’ll explain below. Insect venom immunotherapy has a long track record of being an extremely effective and safe treatment to prevent serious allergic reactions to stings. They work similarly to conventional allergy shots. The food allergy question is more complicated. There are some studies going on with transdermal and oral immunotherapy that have promise. However, the great majority of allergy specialists are not doing these therapies unless the patient is part of a clinical trial. As far as medication allergy, immunotherapy is typically not used, as equally effective other medications can be used. However, in extreme cases, oral or intravenous desensitization to a drug such as penicillin can be performed. This type of therapy would only be done in a hospital setting.

Sublingual immunotherapy can be effective, but a very high dose of allergen extract is needed. This

any high school seniors find themselves taking the SAT or ACT multiple times during their senior year of high school in order to be admitted to their college of choice. However, my recommendation has always been to take the test as many times as needed during your junior year of high school. During the last year of high school, seniors will be busy applying to college between the months of August and January. If you add studying and taking tests on top of that and regular school work, where will you find the time to apply to scholarships? Researching and applying to scholarships takes up a lot of time. But if you are in financial need for college, you need to take advantage of free money. Complete your testing junior year if possible, research and prepare for scholarships over the summer, and once senior year opens- concentrate on sending the applications in for both scholarships and schools. To ease the scholarship search, you need to strategize. First, use specific search engines to find the scholarships. One of the most highly recommended websites is FastWeb (https://www. fastweb.com/). By filling out a questionnaire about yourself, FastWeb will search scholarships for you and send you a list. As new scholarships that you may qualify for become available, you’ll be emailed the list. Another very popular scholarship search tool is an app that was featured on Shark Tank. The Scholly (https://myscholly.com/) app allows you to easily find scholarships based on a few questions but you can also track deadlines and your progress on the application from your phone. website you can use is the College Board (https:// bigfuture.collegeboard.org/scholarship-search). It is important that you use a trustworthy scholarship search tool because many scholarships are actually marketing ploys. For example, a certain site will ask you a long list of questions with no essay. The questions will then lead them to determine what products you might be interested in buying and next thing you know you are being bombarded with e-mail advertisements. Others will tell you that part of your scholarship application requirements is to post certain information or statements a particular number of times on different social media sites. Is there money awarded? Yes. But it is typically a small amount based on a lottery system and not on your financial need or academic ability. After you have compiled a list of scholarships that you believe you qualify for, put a calendar together of the deadlines each scholarship has. Then you can plan backwards on when to start the application for submittal. The earlier the better! Remember, many scholarship applications require not only an essay but recommendation letters and official school transcripts. You may be able to write the essay in no time, but you need to rely on others to get letters and documents – give others plenty of time to prepare so that you are not late with your application. How many scholarships do you apply to? That all depends. It depends on how great is your financial

need; how good are your grades; what type of scholarship is it; how much time do you really have; and what is the amount of the scholarship. Typically, I will help students apply to anything that is over $1000. We try to use the same essay or recommendation letters as much as possible! Some students only apply to the very large scholarships that can cover a whole year of tuition or all four years of college. My recommendation is that you apply to as many as you can, but it really is up to you how much you want or need that free money. Another very important resource is the college that you are applying to. Speak to the financial aid advisor at the college of your interest and ask about what scholarships they offer. Many times scholarships are available to incoming students based on their high school performance, college application, or financial need. These scholarships may be awarded without you having to specifically apply to them! It’s all based on your admissions application. More importantly, once admitted, the college may have scholarships available based on your academic performance or financial need during each semester of study. The key to success with scholarship applications is to start early, plan carefully, and then tackle them on a regular basis. It’s hard and time consuming, but a couple of thousand dollars awarded to you for free is always a help to defray the high cost of college. Both the regular lunchtime diners from the surrounding businesses and the tourists who visit the area, have at Blue Matisse world-class options prepared with exquisite taste and care by Chef Do and his multicultural team. A California native of Korean descent, Chef Do loves combining spicy Asian flavors, local products and recipes from different countries when planning the monthly and weekly menus for the restaurant. “I am very open and willing to learn new ways of doing things” says Chef Do, who makes regular brainstorming sessions with his team to keep enhancing the variety of offers in the menu. “I currently have a staff of 21 people. “I love to discover new cooking techniques from different cultures and apply them to what I learned growing up. I cook what I enjoy eating and I always try to immerse myself in the area I am in. So my cooking definitely has a lot of the big and spicy flavors from my Korean upbringing, local product sourcing from my culinary career in California” explains Chef Do. He also likes to listen to his customer’s suggestions to incorporate them in his menus, as it allows for him and his team the freedom to experiment and try new dishes to please all palates. Chef Do has enjoyed cooking since childhood:

This is now changing as there are many great woman chefs who have proved that they are fully capable and that it can be done. Some of my best cooks have been females and I think it is because they feel that they have to come in stronger and push harder to prove themselves due to this stereotype. It provides that extra drive.”

“It was always part of my life growing up. My grandmother was my first mentor and role model for cooking. She was the church chef and did a lot of the prep work at my house while babysitting me and I was always curious and wanted to help. I also had the good fortune of meeting great teachers during culinary school as well as at my first real job in San Diego. I had a chef named Timothy Au at my first job and he was always willing to teach me how and why things were done instead of just barking orders. I feel that it gave a great understanding of how things worked instead of just the mechanics of the dishes we created.”

LA CREATIVIDAD ES LA BASE PARA COMPLACER TODOS LOS PALADARES

“Me encanta descubrir nuevas técnicas de diferentes culturas y aplicarlas a lo que aprendí cuando crecía. Cocino lo que me gusta comer y siempre trato de involucrarme en el área que me encuentro Mi cocina incorpora los sabores picantes de la comida coreana, con los productos locales y la influencia de mi carrera culinaria en California” explica Chef Do. También le gusta escuchar las sugerencias de sus clientes para incorporarlas en los menús. Eso le permite a él y su equipo la libertad de experimentar y crear libremente nuevos platos para complacer todos los paladares.

El Chef Do ha disfrutado la cocina desde niño: “Mi abuela fue mi primer mentor y modelo en la cocina. Era la chef de nuestra iglesia y preparaba muchas cosas en casa mientras me cuidaba. Yo era curioso y la ayudaba. Tuve la gran suerte de tener excelentes maestros en la escuela culinaria al igual que en mi primer trabajo en San Diego. El Chef Timothy Au en mi primer trabajo siempre me enseñaba y me explicaba en lugar de solamente dar órdenes. Creo que eso me permitió comprender bien cómo funcionan las cosas en lugar de solamente cocinar mecánicamente los platos que creamos.”

DOMINANDO EL ARTE DE LA COCINA

Chef Do se graduó en Artes Culinarias en el Art Institute de San Diego. Ha ganado muchos premios y es miembro del Celebrity Chef Program del Miami Heat. Su talento y experiencia le han ayudado a avanzar rápidamente en los diferentes roles dentro de una cocina. Comenzó como cocinero de línea en 2008, luego cocinero líder en 2010 y para 2013 era Chef Ejecutivo en el Restaurant Toro Toro del InterContinental en el Centro de Miami. Desde Noviembre 2016 es el Chef Ejecutivo del Blue Matisse en Doral, donde coordina la operación diaria de la cocina. “Al llegar reviso todo, verifico compras y costos. Luego reviso qué tenemos pendiente para el día y anticipo el resto de la semana. Las cosas cambian constantemente en la cocina; siempre hay cosas que hacer y asuntos que resolver.” Para el Chef Do el arte de cocinar “es algo que va surge desde una idea que puede ser interpretada de muchas maneras por el cliente. El mismo plato puede crearse de muchas maneras dependiendo de los ingredientes disponibles, el estilo del chef, la ubicación, etc.” Considera Chef Do que, aunque históricamente el trabajo del chef se percibía como “muy fuerte físicamente para las mujeres, hoy en día hay muchas que son excelentes chef con grandes talentos. Muchas de mis mejores cocineras han sido mujeres y pienso que ellas son excelentes porque ponen mucho empeño para probar que pueden superar los

estereotipos. Eso les da motivación adicional en su trabajo.”

“LAS OPINIONES TE AYUDAN A MEJORAR”

Chef Do es un hombre de familia, quien disfruta de su tiempo libre saliendo de pesca con sus hijos. El decidió dedicarse a la carrera de Chef cuando supo que sería padre. “Decidí que debía trabajar en algo que disfrutara mucho, para poder estar de buen humor cuando regresara a casa a estar con mi familia.” Como chef, Do disfruta recibir opiniones sobre su trabajo. “Pienso que a todos los chef nos gusta observar la impresión de la primera prueba de un plato. Se siente que todo el trabajo y esfuerzo valió la pena. Siempre estoy abierto a las críticas; eso no significa que puedan ser negativas, la cocina es muy subjetiva y generalmente es una opinión. Me gusta recibirlas, porque eso te hace mejorar. Me gustaría que me recordaran como alguien que siempre deja los sitios mejor de lo que estaban cuando llegué.” Luego de 5 años trabajando en Florida, el Chef Do considera que la experiencia “ha sido divertida. No había pasado mucho tiempo en Doral antes de este trabajo y no sabía que era un área tan multicultural. El InterContinental ha sido una gran compañía para trabajar; ellos cuidan de sus empleados de la misma manera que cuidan a sus huéspedes. on tan sólo 14 años llegó de su natal Venezuela junto a su familia en busca de nuevas y mejores oportunidades y hoy en día, se puede decir que Angelo Pecorelli alcanzó la primera de sus muchas metas al graduarse con honores de Culver Academy Military.

Angelo, quien hoy cuenta con 19 años de edad, decidió estudiar High School en esta prestigiosa academia militar, ubicada en el centro norte del estado de Indiana en Estados Unidos, con la intención de formarse más allá de la preparación académica y obtener conocimientos y principios de liderazgos y disciplina.

Estos son, justamente, los valores que rigen a Culver Academy Military, institución que se esmera en preparar a jóvenes con una educación integral que los ayude a formar el carácter, desarrollar aptitudes de líderes, obtener valores inter-personales y lograr convertirse en ciudadanos globales. Angelo no sólo estudió sus cuatro años de High School en esta prestigiosa y exigente academia militar, sino que obtuvo excelentes calificaciones, se graduó con honores y obtuvo destacados reconocimientos en las áreas de economía, emprendimiento y liderazgo, demostrando que la disciplina es la base para alcanzar cualquier éxito académico, laboral o personal. Culver Academy Military también inculcó en Angelo la pasión por el deporte, pues este joven emprendedor dedica su tiempo libre a las actividades físicas, pues está consciente de la importancia de desarrollar aptitudes deportivas que ayuden al bienestar integral del ser humano y al mantenimiento de la salud. Otra de las características que ha llevado a Angelo a convertirse en un estudiante destacado es su habilidad para las relaciones inter-personales. “Conversador, preocupado por los demás, carismático, sociable y sumamente afectuoso”, son los calificativos que su padre, Antonio Pecorelli utiliza para describir las cualidades de su joven hijo. Su padre reconoce que, inicialmente, no entendió el interés de su hijo por estudiar en una academia militar. “Hoy, que ha logrado graduarse con honores, comprendo perfectamente que lo que Angelo buscaba era canalizar esas cualidades para relacionarse con las personas que siempre lo han

caracterizado, a través de la disciplina y el liderazgo, lo que me hace sentir sumamente orgulloso”. Sin embargo, esta es sólo una de las primeras metas de Angelo, pues ahora está listo para iniciar el camino universitario, ya que fue aceptado en Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU, por sus siglas en inglés), donde pronto empezará a estudiar la carrera de Hotelería, lo que le permitirá darle seguimiento al negocio familiar.

Keep Pets Safe in Summer Heat by the Humane Society of the United States

uring these record-setting hot months, we try to take all the proper precautions to protect the ones we love. It’s easy to remember to put sun block on the kids and make sure to keep hydrated, but what about the family pet? it’s important to remember that they are animals and often have specific needs different from our own. Never Leave Your Pet in the Car: In nice weather you may be tempted to take your pet with you in the car while you travel or do errands. But during warm weather, the inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even if you’re parked in the shade. Dogs and cats can’t perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. Pets who are left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die. To avoid any chance that your pet will succumb to the heat of a car this summer, be sure to play it safe by leaving your pet cool and refreshed at home while you’re on the road. And if you do happen to see a pet in a car alone during the hot summer months, alert the management of the store where the car is parked. If the owner does not return promptly, call local animal control or the police department immediately. Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but extra care needs to be taken with older dogs, short-nosed dogs, and those with thick coats. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Keep in mind that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s paws. Another summertime threat is fleas and ticks. Use only flea and tick treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Some over-the-counter flea and tick products can be toxic, even when used according to instructions. Don’t take your pets to crowded summer events such as concerts or fairs. The loud noises and crowds, combined with the heat, can be stressful and dangerous for pets. If your pet is exposed to high temperatures: Be alert for signs of heat stress-heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet becomes overheated, you must lower her body temperature immediately. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water all over her body to gradually lower her temperature. Apply ice packs or cool towels to your pet’s head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Finally, take your pet directly to a veterinarian-it could save her life.

Korean War veterans deserve to be remembered and honored for their sacrifices By Jose “Pepe” Diaz

he Korean War is sometimes called the “Forgotten War.” Occurring between World War II and the Vietnam War, it was overshadowed by the two larger conflicts, and it continues to be somewhat neglected by historians. But with over 36,000 American lives lost in the Korean War, it deserve to be remembered. The brave soldiers who fought and died in that war held back the tide of Communism in the Korean peninsula and preserved democracy in South Korea, which remains a strong U.S. ally and one of the most prosperous nations in the Far East. Last month, I had the distinct pleasure to present a Miami-Dade County proclamation to a group of Korean War veterans to honor them for their brave service. Among those honored was Arcadio Martell, a CubanAmerican who immigrated to the United States and volunteered to take up arms on this nation’s behalf to fight Communism halfway around the world. Arcadio, who works as an aide for Commissioner Joe A. Martinez, is a hardworking, conscientious man who always puts others before himself. Perhaps his most endearing quality is his incredible humility. Although I have known him many years, it was only recently that I learned he was a Korean War veteran. When I asked him why he hadn’t told me before, he responded, “You never asked.” Here is a man who had every reason to be tremendously proud of his service, and yet his humility prevents him from bragging about it. Arcadio’s humility made me reflect on all the other unsung heroes from that unsung conflict who live and work amongst us. These brave Americans fought the

good fight against Communism and for our precious freedoms. We owe them our thanks and appreciation. Let us remember and honor them this summer and throughout the year. InterContinental at Doral Miami kicked off their seventh annual Together in Pink charity event with a kick-off cocktail and a fundraising goal of $100,000.00, of which 100 percent will benefit Susan G. Doral Academy Charter School math teams were recognized at the Doral City Council

Members of the Doral Academy Charter School math teams were recognized at the Doral City Council meeting on June 14. Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez presented a certificate to middle and high school representatives of the math club, Ms. Yvette Tamargo, assistant principal, and Ms. Libby Manning, math teacher and club sponsor. The high school math team recently placed 3rd in the State at convention, and are going to New York to compete in Nationals in July.

Atlantic Pacific Management has announced Alexander Saumell as the new Property Manager of The Atlantic Doral. “I have been in the property management business for over 15 years”, said Saumell. He started his career as a Leasing Consultant at Las Palmas at Doral Park in 2000 with Altman Management Company. He then grew into an Assistant Manager position at the Enclave at Doral in 2001 and became the Property Manager in 2003. Saumell managed the Enclave at Doral until 2005 with GDC Properties Inc. through the purchase and condo conversion by Lennar Homes. “I continued my career in property management with Equity Residential and then FirstService Residential Realty where I managed REO Assets for Fannie Mae, SunTrust and Bank of America during the foreclosure crisis in 2010… As the foreclosure crisis faded in 2014 I transitioned into managing single family homes, townhomes and individual condominiums for private investors as a Regional Director through 2016”. Now, Alex Saumell has returned to Doral to continue his career in the multifamily sector of property management as the Property Manager of The Atlantic Doral with Atlantic Pacific Management. He graduated from FIU in 2003 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management, and he is a Licensed Florida Real Estate Broker and a Licensed Community Association Manager.
