Kendall Regional Medical Center Becomes the Leading Healthcare Provider in Doral with the Opening of the City’s FIRST EVER FREESTANDING EMERGENCY ROOM By Bruna Doering
W
Abril/April 01, 2019
ith Doral being the fastest growing city in Florida, healthcare is a topic that has been on the minds of the city’s 68,000 residents for a few years now. Fortunately, Kendall Regional Medical and Trauma Center is opening the first ever freestanding Emergency Room in Doral, making them the leading healthcare provider in the thriving city. The hospital celebrated their $10 million project with a VIP Ribbon Cutting that brought together the City of Doral government, Miami-Dade County Commissioners, State Representatives, City of Doral Police and Fire Rescue, Doral Homeowner Associations and many more. The freestanding emergency room will offer full service emergency care (including pediatrics) within the 10,500-square-foot facility, caring for patients with minor illness and injury, heart concerns, major medical concerns including burns and overdosing, respiratory issues, neurological concerns (such as head injuries and seizures) and life issues like animal bites, allergic reactions and cuts and wounds. “The advantage to coming to our facility is that we’re a full-service emergency department,” says Joseph Averbach, MD, medical director of emergency medicine for Kendall Regional Medical Center. “We can offer all services: CAT scan, ultrasound and complete on-site lab services, unlike an urgent care.” Also of note: the center is staffed by board certified emergency medicine physicians and nurses. Says Averbach, “We can handle the sicker patients.” Growing in popularity around the country, freestanding emergency rooms offer the same benefits and quality of care as hospital emergency rooms, operating 24 hours a day and making use of high-tech diagnostic tools. Freestanding ER’s are legally required to operate 24 hours a day, are
6
always staffed with on-site doctors and provide all members of the community with a medical screening. The Doral center offers patients access to more than 40 medical personnel and was initially conceived as a way to address the lack of emergency services in the area. Patients who are found to be serious enough to admit are transported directly from the ER to Kendall Regional, where they bypass the on-site ER and are able to go directly to a room. “Doral was strategic in the sense that traffic is always a challenge,” says Kendall Regional’s Director of Community Relations, Peter Jude, who adds the center has been working closely with local police and fire rescue. “It’s a busy area that needed an ER.” “It’s a true honor and pleasure to be the medical director of Kendall Regional Medical Center’s Doral Emergency Room Department,” says Averbach of the 11-bed center, which has a sister freestanding ER in Town & Country. “On behalf of myself and my team of doctors, we look forward to being a part of and working for the Doral community.” The Doral Emergency Room will be hosting a free community Open House on Saturday, March 30, which will give the Doral community the opportunity to tour the ER and get any questions they may have
answered. There will be face painting, inflatables, arts and crafts, performances and engaging discussions from some of the staff. The Open House will be from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at 10915 NW 41st St. Doral, FL 33178. For more information, call 305.222.2200 or visit KendallMed.Com

Final Strategic Planning Meeting will take place April 4th
Doral Council Defines STRATEGIC PRIORITIES for 2019-2020
By Maria Alejandra Pulgar mpulgar@doralfamilyjournal.net
T
he first exercise of the Budget Season is the definition of Strategic Priorities. Two public strategic planning sessions took place March 8th and 9th at Doral Legacy Park, where the Mayor and Council, along with the directors of the departments in the City, started to analyze and define the priorities that will guide the projects for next year. Focus was set on projects that deliver “sustainable and resilient solutions to meet the future development vision of the City of Doral”. They were divided on five key elements that allow people to achieve quality of life, which are opportunity, mobility, safety, play and control. For each of those elements the current conditions within the city were reviewed and plans discussed in order to ensure the achievement of the vision that has been defined for Doral. A follow up meeting will take place on April 4th where Council members will review the directives and the plan will be clearly outlined to develop a final report on the priorities.
Abril/April 01, 2019
OPPORTUNITY: WHERE IS DORAL GOING TO GROW?
10
It is projected that the population in Doral will reach 75,000 people in 2020. More residents need more parks, roads, police and other services, and on the other hand, they also increase the ad-valorem tax contribution, allowing for the administration to cover the cost of more services. The areas of growth for the city in the next ten years include, according to the plan, the development of the Downtown, along with a Medical district in the East; Logistics, Automotive and Transit Oriented districts in the South, and an Advanced Industrial Park in the North. The role of the local government for the development of those areas as projected will be crucial, as the policies and programs that are adopted, especially those related to transportation, infrastructure and workforce housing, as well as the completion and alignment with projects in the County, will influence the development of the districts as envisioned.
MOBILITY: COMPLETE ROAD NETWORK AND IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS
Traffic and mobility choices always arise as one of the
department. It is projected that the police force will increase to 150 sworn officers next year, and among the preliminary priorities proposed are to incorporate safety technology, establish a park bike patrol, and increase the number of community resource officers, investigations section and the traffic unit.
PLAY: PROACTIVE, HIGH PERFORMANCE PARK SYSTEM
main concerns for Doral residents. The grid of roads in Doral has expanded over the years to help alleviate the issue. Nineteen projects have been completed since 2008, and two more are in the works to allow for residents to travel around the city in all directions, avoiding main roads and their traffic in many key areas, including the development of alternative corridors such as NW 33rd street, NW 109th avenue, NW 102th Avenue and NW 82nd avenue. The two main pending projects to continue completing the grid are the extension of NW 112th avenue from 34th to 41st streets, and NW 97th avenue from 74th to 90th streets. Improvements in the trolley system, expansion of the bikeway network, development of more parking alternatives, and coordination with external entities for interconnection with different choices for local public transportation, are part of the mobility features considered within the strategic planning. Funding from the Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) through the Miami Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) has helped Doral financing these projects over the years, to improve the quality of life of the residents.
SAFETY: MORE RESOURCES AND TECHNOLOGY
With the increase in population there is a direct impact on public safety. More service calls, more traffic and more chances for crime, domestic issues or nuisances among neighbors and business owners. One of the main advantages of being an independent municipality lies in the fact that Doral has its own Police
Doral has grown from having no parks in 2003 to nine facilities in 2019, including the Doral Glades Park that is currently under construction. The constant increase on the population has caused the City to be constantly catching up with the needs of the residents regarding recreation spaces. The passing of the “Parks for Tomorrow” bonds in November will allow the City to complete the projects from the Parks Master Plan by 2025, which will provide the residents with the spaces they need and have long awaited, like the pool, and arts center, fitness trails and more. Once all the main priorities on the Parks Master Plan are met, Doral will be able to become proactive instead of reactive on providing for the recreational needs of the residents, with a High Performance level of operation and customer service for all users of the Park System. Control: Data analytics to provide better service The investments in Smart City technology in previous years have allowed Doral to lay the foundations for implementing more applications that provide the administration with tools to monitor the operation of the city in terms of traffic, safety, etc., and also to provide residents with more efficient, innovative, and inclusive ways of engaging and collaborating with the operation of their City. It enhances the decision making process for the operation and allows the residents and business owners to receive better services. Doral is now a finalist on the All-America City Award, one of the 20 best cities recognized by the National Civic League as model of commitment to the quality of life of its residents. The preliminary strategic priorities defined for next year are consistent with that commitment for the years to come.

Próxima reunión será el 4 de Abril
Consejo de Doral Define PRIORIDADES ESTRATÉGICAS 2019-2020 By Maria Alejandra Pulgar mpulgar@doralfamilyjournal.net
E

SOCIAL MEDIA: ¿Friend or Foe?
By Diana Bello Aristizábal
Abril/April 01, 2019
S
14
ince social networks were first created, they have grown exponentially until becoming a basic platform for business, entertainment and socialization, to the point that according to Ad Espresso statistics of June 2018, only in Instragram were logged about one billion monthly active users and nearly 500 million daily active users. The power and influence of social media in people’s lives was highly noticeable on March 13 when for a large part of the day, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp simultaneously went down, bringing great concern among users who massively published memes and messages about this once the service was reestablished. As it was expected, one day later Facebook explained through its Twitter account that the interruptions in the service occured due to a server configuration change. However, users were not pleased and the media described the issue as “one of the worst setbacks in history.” This event, which nobody remembers today, made us analyze how positive is the current use we give to social media, and whether it is good or not that they have become our main route to communicate with one another, more so taking into account that in recent years there have been some problems associated with an incorrect use of social networks, such as decreased labor productivity, anxiety and loneliness, among others. In this regard, experts in digital marketing and social media agree that they are not harmful by themselves, because they were created in order to connect people with common interests, bring together relatives and friends and present information on different topics. “Social media allow us to expand personal and business growth ideas, do networking, attract customers, and promote sales, new companies or any positioning strategy,” says Lorelein Gonzalez, personal brand consultant and marketing expert. In addition, users can choose the kind of content they want to see. “This works through an algorithm that filters what is shown according to the ‘likes’, searches, comments or information shared by each user, with the purpose of only showing information of different brands or products that match his or her interest,” explains Johana Arocha, bachelor in computer science, blogger and consultant in e-commerce and social media. This dynamic is a competitive advantage for companies because it allows them to carry out marketing campaigns aimed at a more specific niche, while users receive personalized content every time they log in their accounts. Although social networks offer many possibilities, its down side is often experimented by those who spend
a considerable amount of time per day connected to them without control, have no boundaries when it comes to sharing personal information or are addicted to content. According to Ronaldo García, digital marketing coach and social media teacher at Miami Marketing School, this unbalanced behaviour is seen mainly in people under 45 years of age. “According to the latest statistics, people between 35 and 40 years are the most active ones in these platforms and, overall, in smartphones, while those over 45 are not,” he states.
THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM
For Martha Maduro, Director of On the Path Again Counseling Center, family and couple therapist, according to recent research, the unreasonable use of social networks find its root in the loneliness and selfcenteredness that exists in today’s society. “People who do not get what they want in real life, look for it in social media. This is clear when someone uploads an image, receives many ‘likes’, and starts needing more and more attention becoming addicted to it,” says Maduro. According to her, the problem with this is that human communication is increasingly limited because the ability to connect with others, integrating the five senses, is being lost. “Personal communication can’t be completely replaced,” states Maduro, because non-verbal expressions, such as a look, a hug or a smile, send together a clear message and not a twisted one as it happens, sometimes, in digital environments,” says the therapist. Lorelein Gonzalez has a similar opinion. She states that people use social media unreasonably because they seek external recognition instead of strengthening themselves as individuals or professionals. For Ronaldo García, the problem lies in smartphones because through them people can access not only to social networks, but listen to music, watch videos, have a calendar, pay bills, take photos and watch news, among other possibilities. “In the past, when we wanted to watch television, we had to be at home, if we wanted to play a video game we needed a videogame console, and if we wanted to listen to music, a sound system. Now everything is integrated into the cell phone that we can take everywhere with us,” says Garcia. This reality, according to the expert, helps to create addiction in people because mobiles have become
indispensable devices that generate content constantly, and social networks are the number one content producers. But what behaviors in users could indicate an incorrect use of social media or an addiction to content? According to García, spending too many hours a day hooked to social networks, posting only ‘selfies’ or information of oneself and creating fake accounts to attack other people or commit crimes. For Martha Maduro, being distracted regularly or being incapable of following instructions, failing to remember long-term events, isolation and low self-esteem are also red flags. However, the real effects of the excessive use of social media will probably be seen in the long-term when the present generation enters adulthood, in about 10 to 15 years. Meanwhile, people can follow some guideliness to help reverse its negative impact.
SETTING OUT BASIC RULES
To start, it should be noted that everything done within social networks leave an indelible digital fingerprint, which means that all shared content is stored in search engines and on the Internet. “This happens even if someone
Cover | Portada
hardly posts, because he or she still clicks ‘like’, makes searches and shares information,” says Johana Arocha. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of everything we post and, first and foremost, not sharing private information, such as telephone numbers, addresses or compromising content. “We must avoid putting ourselves in risky situations, like being chased by a stalker, especially children who do not understand the magnitude of their actions,” says Garcia. In this line, another recommendation is to control the use of social networks in children under 18 years of age, because they are currently using them, even though are meant only for adults. “It is important to know what our children do on their cell phones due to the fact that recently the amount of information sent by minors, through these devices, has been growing,” says García, who explains that although social media was not designed for them, there is still little control over the kind of content they see. To solve this issue, parents and caregivers can contact their smartphone providers, as some offer the possibility of restricting access to social networks. However, Ronaldo García suggests establishing basic rules at home, like managing their children’s social accounts or letting them use only those used by parents. On the other hand, it is vital to control time spent on social media making use of the different applications
available for cell phones and computers, as FocusMe. iPhone users can try the Screen Time feature displayed in the latest upgrades, which allows to select a time frame for each social network. “This feature is great for someone who is not very productive due to his or her social media addiction. By using it, the person can know in which social network is spending more time to start gradually reducing the hours,” says Johana Arocha. About this, Ronaldo García says that it is important to do so especially in the work place. “If you check your social networks accounts during office hours, somehow you’re failing your employer as you are not being paid for that,” he says. His reccomendation is to set small goals to lower the amount of hours dedicated to them, after checking which social network is used the most. “If you spend seven hours in social media, you will have seven hours of unproductiveness,”, he declares.
In addition to limiting the number of hours, Martha Maduro advises to determine the specific moments of the day when social networks would be off-limits, like after waking up, during friends or family meetings or at work. The therapist also suggests using social media as a platform to make a first contact with someone to later on arrange a face-to-face meeting. “Let’s try to extend communication beyond a chat or a wall by inviting people for a coffee or an interview,” she says. On another note, according to Johana Arocha it could be a good idea to charge cell phones outside of bedrooms to avoid checking them before going to sleep when the brain should be at its most relaxed state. “By not having them close to us, we could have more moments of disconnection in order to stop the addiction,” says the expert. Additionally, she encourages people to remember that social media is a virtual world and not the real one. Therefore, engaging in meaningless disputes, and controversial topics or taking negative comments too seriously is not healthy. Finally, Lorelein Gonzalez speaks about the importance of being wise and strategic when it comes to content. “The kind of content we feed ourselves with will depend on what we decide is more useful to us. When we know that, we begin to make a correct and positive use of social media,” she points out.

LAS REDES SOCIALES: ¿Aliadas o enemigas? Por Diana Bello Aristizábal
Abril/April 01, 2019
D
18

More PERSEVERANCE and LESS STRESS during exams By Diana Bello Aristizábal

hile kids are going to school, one of the aspects that worries the most to parents is their performance, which often times is measured with the grades they get in tests. For this reason, in times of intense academic activity, it is common for families to be highly stressed, something that can be avoided with a few changes at home and a good attitude. Reducing stress towards exams is vital to send a positive message to children and adolescents about school times that, although they are competitive and require the effort of students, should be mainly fun and enriching. According to Linette R. Prats, educational consultant and owner of Club Z, a tutoring company in the Doral area that works with clients at their homes, in her experience parents get heavily stressed by their children’s academic performance, even from the very first grades. “This is not necessary. We must give importance to exams but not to the point of making the students nervous, especially taking into consideration that during kindergarten, first and second grades are only to collect data about the progress of the child,” she says. Sabina García, family and couples therapist specialized in children and adolescents, has a similar opinion. She thinks that many children begin to manifest symptoms of anxiety, as young as seven or eight years of age, due to the pressure they receive from adults. “These children suddenly wake up with a belly or headaches, sweats, nerves or express not wanting to go to school, because they are afraid of showing to exams, and their bodies are aware of that,” says Sabina García. Also, they also begin to have doubts about their abilities, reject studying or go blank during exams even after long hours of study time. For her, all of this happens despite the fact that tests are not the only way to measure school performance. “In some academic courses, as third grade, exams are important to be promoted to the next grade. However, it also counts everything that is done throughout the year, and this is something that should be explained to children,” says Sabrina. On the other hand, it is also essential controlling stress to avoid passing it on to children as, according to Érika Angulo, infant mental health therapist and parenting specialist, this can lead them to have problems regulating their emotions in the face of an
exam, which ultimately can affect their thoughts and rationing. For Sabina García, the problem of not managing anxiety and stress during exams from early stages is that when children reach middle and high school, their emotional state gets worse. “They get used to being anxious, and that is reflected for the rest of their lives,” says García.
STUDYING SHOULD BE A HABIT
Considering that anxiety and stress tend to escalate as time goes by, it is ideal to be alongside children, while they are in exams times, in a balanced way by teaching them to study properly without sending negative messages. For Renefred Maingrette, owner and director of Omega Learning Center in Doral, the main way to do this is to balance academic and social life. “It is important for children to do recreational activities on weekends to reduce the stress of weekdays,” says Renefred. On the other hand, it is vital not to wait until the last moment to start studying or apply improvement actions. “Many parents fail to do anything until they notice their children are getting bad grades. Therefore, I recommend starting to prepare them one or two months in advance,” she adds. The main purpose of doing so is to help them carry out a process in which they constantly review the concepts learned in class, either with the help of parents or through professional tutoring. “Working at home or getting external help, can be very useful to address topics or concepts that were uncleared during class because sometimes it is difficult for children to understand in a class full of students,” says Renefred.
In this regard, Linette R. Prats believes that the grades obtained at each term of the school year are a way to measure performance to later apply improvement actions. “If, for example, in the second term your child gets a C, that is already a redflag. Look for help from the beginning so that in the next term, grades get better,” she says. In addition, experts advise parents to really know what is the importance of the exam about to be taken. “They tend to worry a lot about third-grade exams without knowing that there are four opportunities to pass throughout the year,” says the consultant. Therefore, having enough information about the exam that will be taken is key to direct the efforts made at home, and to reduce the stress of adults that, naturally, will be reflected in children as a domino effect. In the first grades state assessments, for example, it is not only measured how much the student has learned but other soft skills such as the ability to follow instructions or the knowledge that the child has regarding language, this especially applies to foreign students.
Renefred Maingrette Also, these exams and all, in general, aim to evaluate progress and verify the student’s readiness for the next school year. As for high schoolers, tests are an indicator of how prepared they are to go to college. For all this, exams should be viewed as the result of a process. “To parents who focus too much on grades, we tell them that children should not only study to get good grades but to understand and learn. However, when they do, let them know that it was because of their effort. Teach them to study for them and not

It is also advisable to know exactly what concepts your child did not understand, and if a part of the lesson was harder than the others. While doing so, remember that a grade is not a reflection of his or her abilities or value as a person.

Sabina García recommends teaching breathing techniques in times of stress, speaking positively or putting on pleasant music. 6. Not seeking psychological help on time, ignoring the problem or hiding it. 7. Not listening to them. just to please adults, and recognize their progress,” advises Renefred Maingrette. Within that process, it is also important to consider individual circumstances that may play a role in academic performance. For example, a student of American origin will probably won’t have the same performance as one who has been in the country for a few months. “In this case, it may be difficult to approve the first exams, because the student is learning a new educational system,” says Linette R. Prats. To sort out individual circumstances that may surround a child, it is convenient to regularly attend parent meetings and have close communication with teachers to learn about his or her strengths, and give the correct motivation. “If you feel that your child is anxious before an exam, is constantly distracted, cries when doing homework or has a poor performance, team-up with the teachers, as they spend more time with your kid than you,” says Renefred Maingrette. It is also recommended to have a conversation with the child to inquire on the reasons behind his or her behavior and to ask the most relevant questions to make a diagnosis of the case and find the best possible solution. “You have to find out if your child feels comfortable in class, also what causes the stress and if he or she likes or not participating in academic activities. If the answer is no, you can ask what is the reason for this

6. No buscar ayuda sicológica a tiempo, ignorar el problema o camuflarlo. 7. No escucharlos.

Due to the increase in fatal results on aesthetic procedures.
SB 732 REVISES REGULATIONS on cosmetic surgery centers
This Bill is being proposed by Senator Anitere Flores. Its goal is to demand responsibility from Aesthetic Clinics, where there have been patients that have died and to close these human butcher shops.

iami has become an empire for plastic surgery, and it is attracting patients from all over the United States with the promise of economic surgeries and results that will change people’s lives. But this is not always the case; every day there are more women that die or end up with serious injuries after going through an aesthetic procedure that has been performed by unskilled personnel. Because of this growing reality, the members of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, voted unanimously to approve SB 732, which was sponsored by Senator Anitere Flores. This bill mandates that the Department of Health establishes the requirements to register all aesthetic clinics, and to impose regulations on them. This Bill will also increase the state’s ability to make these centers comply with the regulations by giving it the power to revoke the registration of a cosmetic center, restrict the reopening of new offices and to impose fines, for example. It will also establish three different levels for the surgeries in an office, from level I which will include simple procedures such as removing a mole, up to level III which will be the most complicated and that will require the presence of an anesthesiologist on site. Senator’s Flores initiative seeks that both the doctors that conduct aesthetic surgeries and the centers in which these surgeries take place are duly regulated and properly trained. On its side, the Florida Board of Medicine is already working on the review of the rules that allow clinics to perform liposuction in the doctor’s offices. Its Vice President, Hector Vila, requested that the rules for liposuction are revised, specifically the ones on gluteal fat grafting, commonly known as buttock lifts. The cases that have taken place in Miami have triggered that several plastic surgery organizations, among them the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have requested that the Board of Medicine provides the patients with additional information on all the procedures.
28
BEYOND VANITY
To support the arguments that prompted Senator Flores to propose this bill, the only thing needed is to review the most recent cases in the news in which it is evident that there are plenty of clinics that offer very cheap surgeries that call the attention of people. In the name of vanity, these people search for bargains and frequently choose economy that does not offer the best quality in services.
These are, generally speaking, investors; they promote their services in social networks with discounted pricings, but the promises of the ideal body vanish before the dangers of disfigured faces, permanent scars, damaged organs, mutilations, deformities and in some extreme cases, death. These clinics, which are often not properly certified, work as a factory assembly line, where individual doctors, most of them with little specialized training, perform surgery in as many as eight patients per day. This has caused deaths and injuries that were not the result of inevitable surgery complications, but of serious mistakes and procedures that were beyond safety limits. Even when the Florida Department of Health has the ability to impose emergency suspensions to those facilities that pose a public health threat, legal regulations are more urgent in order to protect the patient, which most of the times does not even know what to ask and whose only concern is to look better at the lowest cost possible.
CERTIFICATION AND INFORMATION
Unfortunately, the lack of information is one mistake that many patients make when they decide to undergo an aesthetic surgery. For example, knowing if the plastic surgeon operating on the person is certified is the first question that someone should ask before going into the operating room. When people go through a medical procedure that is not an aesthetic one, this has been previously referred to by a primary doctor or the doctor performing the procedure belongs to the network of some insurance or both, and in this case the credentials of the doctor have already been verified. It is important to also take into consideration that doctors who offer cosmetic services usually do not work within a hospital system, but in their own office. This means that if you are thinking on having aesthetic plastic surgery, the first step is to find a doctor that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Another important question to ask the doctor is to know the alternatives that you have in case there are any complications, for example, is there urgent access to a hospital? It is also important to always remember that all surgeries have risks and that plastic surgeries are no exception. Do not place your trust in places that perform different procedures simultaneously, do not be carried away by plans and rates that are excessively cheap and always verify, not only the doctor, but also that the clinic is authorized to perform the type of surgeries that you need. Be meticulous, consult with the surgeon if you are fit to undergo the surgical procedure, and if you need to get any type of physical, medical or psychological test. Learn how the preparation for the surgery will be, the procedure and the recovery process. Verify the quality and hygiene of the materials that are going to be used during the surgery and follow all the recommendations of the surgeon in order to have a better recovery. If you experience any complication, get in touch directly with the surgeon. Asking these questions will not only help you know that the qualifications of the person that is going to perform the surgery, the place where you will get the surgery and the procedure are the correct ones, but it will also demonstrate that you are an informed patient, one that will be difficult to deceive with false promises. Remember that the Florida Department of Health offers the Medical Quality Assurance service, where you can verify the medical license, record of studies, professional certifications and any history of disciplinary sanctions of the medical professionals.

COMMON HEALTH MYTHS Charles Lascano, MD CAQSM. Sports Medicine Specialist. Sanitas Medical Centers
MYTH 1: All herbal medicines and supplements are safe to use.
Unfortunately many of the herbal medicines and supplements pose potential health risks to people in terms of adverse events and interactions with other medications. Many over-the-counter dietary supplements have been found to contain active pharmaceuticals not identified on the label. Examples include products marketed for weight loss (found to frequently contain sibutramine and phenolphthalein, two drugs previously withdrawn from the market by the US Food and Drug Administration [FDA]), sexual enhancement (found to contain phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, most commonly sildenafil (Viagra)) and muscle-building supplements (found to contain anabolic steroids). Makers of dietary supplements are not required to prove efficacy, safety, or quality of a product prior to marketing.
Supplement manufacturers are also not obligated to report post marketing adverse events to the FDA.
MYTH 2: Vitamins supplementation is a good source of energy when exercising.
Regardless of what energy system is used in our body, the end result is the production of adenosine triphosphate (or ATP). ATP is extracted from the food we eat (fat, carbohydrate, and protein) and is required for the biochemical reactions involved in any muscle contraction. The intensity and duration of the activity dictates which foodstuffs are broken down. Vitamins are a group of substances that are needed for normal cell function, growth, and development, but are not the source of energy for exercise. There is a fine line between getting enough of these nutrients (which is healthy) and getting too much (which can end up harming you). Eating a healthy diet remains the best way to get
sufficient amounts of the vitamins and minerals you need.
MYTH 3: Osteoarthritis can be cured with herbs, supplements, vitamins, and minerals.
Currently, the process underlying osteoarthritis cannot be reversed, but symptoms can usually be effectively managed. Exercise, physical therapy, knee taping, and tai chi are beneficial for knee osteoarthritis and are considered the first line of treatment to treat this condition. Herbs, supplements, vitamins, and minerals are not routinely use due to lack of data demonstrating efficacy.
MYTH 4: If the flu or common cold does not improve, is time to take antibiotics.
Antibiotics, also known as antibacterials, are medications that destroy or slow down the growth of bacteria. They include a range of powerful drugs and are used to treat diseases caused by bacteria. Antibiotics
MITOS COMUNES EN LA SALUD
Marzo/March 17, 2019
cannot treat viral infections, such as cold or flu. Before bacteria can multiply and cause symptoms, the immune system can typically kill them. White blood cells (WBCs) attack harmful bacteria and, even if symptoms do occur, the immune system can usually cope and fight off the infection. Sometimes, however, the number of harmful bacteria is excessive, and the immune system cannot fight them all. Antibiotics are useful in this scenario. These drugs usually interfere with either the formation of the bacterial cell wall or its cell contents or stops bacteria from multiplying. In other words, the antibiotic makes the bacteria weaker so the white blood cells will come and kill them. The structure of a virus is different so it would be useless to try the antibiotic on them and the only effect this will cause is to expose the body to the many potential side effects of the antibiotics for nothing. The antibiotics do not work by making the body stronger as some people think.
MYTH 5: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is needed to diagnose the cause of the musculoskeletal pain.
The clinical presentation (which consists of the explanation of the symptoms and how did those started), and the appropriate examination with the health professional, are the most important tools to diagnose any musculoskeletal pain (pain that affects the muscles, ligaments and tendons, and bones). In the vast majority of the cases, the diagnosis made by the health professional after examining the patient is all that is needed. When imaging studies are needed, radiographs are usually the first choice because is more available and cheaper than the MRI. It is incorrect to assume that radiographs are useful only to check if there is a fracture. Radiographs are also helpful for example to look for calcifications, observe the joint space, look for infection and to locate foreign objects in soft tissue.
Health | Salud

Springtime MOSQUITO CONTROL tips offered for Miami-Dade County residents Here’s what to do to limit mosquito breeding and bites during the months of March, April and May.
S
Abril/April 01, 2019
pring has sprung. In South Florida, that means more rainfall and ever-higher average temperatures. Both factors are ideal for an increase in the native and invasive mosquito species populations. Do not fret - the Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control & Habitat Management Division is here to help. “Source reduction means eliminating the places mosquitoes can breed, which is key at this time of the year,” says Dr. William Petrie, division director. “Given this past week’s heavy and sustained rains, and because of the resultant accumulation of standing water, there is likely to be an increase i n mosquito breeding.” The Mosquito Control team monitors a network of more than 180 traps, conducts truck larviciding missions and responds to resident inspection requests year round. Here are some additional Fight The Bite tips to help reduce mosquito breeding and biting this season: Do some spring cleaning. Discard any objects that can collect water and breed mosquitoes, such as empty pots and planters, unused coolers, old tires and broken appliances. Clean out your rain gutters, as they tend to clog up and create potential breeding sites. Sport some new spring fashions such as long-sleeved clothing and pants when venturing into the great wide open, and on your way out, apply EPA-registered mosquito repellents with DEET, picaridin, IR-3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Do you have bromeliads in your garden? Use larvicide granules of the naturallyoccurring and EPA-approved substance called Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) to prevent breeding in them. Nontoxic to humans, pets, birds and animals, Bti eliminates mosquitoes during the larval stage which prevents them from emerging as adult/biting mosquitoes. Toss Bti in briquette or dunk form into bird baths and fish ponds. Enjoy the outdoors more efficiently and safely by installing screens over your windows, doors and patios. Make sure that all existing screens are kept in a good state of repair. If you own a boat, store and protect your vessels with tarps that don’t accumulate water. Check your pool chemical levels frequently. You can also call 311, click www.miamidade.gov/311direct or download and use the all-new Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management mobile app for iPhone to request a mosquito inspection of your home or business.
