Policía de Doral refuerza acciones de seguridad y prevención ante robo de vehículos

Policía de Doral hace un llamado a “no hacerles el trabajo fácil a los ladrones”, al recordar la importancia de cerrar los vehículos y no dejar objetos de valor visibles. Edda Pujadas, @epujadas

n total de 117 casos de robos y vandalismo a vehículos fue registrado por el Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad de Doral durante los primeros meses del año, evidenciándose un incremento de 15 % en comparación al mismo periodo de tiempo del 2016. Explica el capitán Carlos Arango de la Policía de Doral que estas cifras equivalen a alrededor de dos vehículos robados por día en un área de 15 millas cuadradas, desde el 1ero. de enero hasta el 22 de febrero del 2017. “Se han presentado 18 casos más que durante las mismas fechas del año pasado, mostrándose el mayor incremento entre la tercera semana de enero y la primera semana de febrero”. Un dato curioso de estas estadísticas es que de los 117 vehículos que fueron vandalizados, 47 de ellos no estaban cerrados y 14 más no presentaban señales de haber sido abiertos a la fuerza (violentando cerraduras o rompiendo ventanas), por lo que, probablemente, también se dejaron abiertos. “Esto significa que 61 automóviles (52%) de los carros robados no tenían ninguna seguridad, lo que le hizo el trabajo fácil a los ladrones”, indica el capitán Arango.

Otro punto importante a destacar dentro de estas estadísticas es que los artículos robados estaban visibles dentro del vehículo o eran de fácil acceso. Explica el capitán Arango que la mayoría de las personas que comete este tipo de delito no busca enfrentarse directamente a su víctima, sino una oportunidad fácil y rápida de apoderarse de unas cuantas cosas. “Generalmente, este tipo de delincuentes se pasea alrededor de los carros y se va asomando por las ventanillas o revisando si los vehículos están abiertos para cometer el robo, son pocos los que se exponen a abrir el automóvil a la fuerza y cuando esto ocurre, sucede con mucha más frecuencia en horas de la noche”. Señala Arango que los dos tipos más comunes de ladrones de vehículos son “car-hoppers” (brinca carros, por su traducción al español) y “window smashers” (rompe ventanas, por su traducción al español). Los “carhoppers” buscan el acceso fácil al carro, por lo que van en busca de una puerta desbloqueada y luego toman los

artículos que están dentro del automóvil. Los “window smashers” simplemente rompen una de las ventanillas del carro para sustraer los objetos de valor. “Independientemente del método de acceso al interior del carro, todos los robos de vehículos tienen una cosa en común: los objetos de valor fueron dejados en el automóvil y en la mayoría de los casos, a la vista de cualquier persona”.

ACCIONES PREVENTIVAS Y OPERATIVAS

A pesar de que las estadísticas de robos a vehículos en Doral aun no son alarmantes, la Policía de Doral ha tomado acciones inmediatas para controlar la comisión de este tipo de delito. “La idea no es sólo impedir que siga aumentando el vandalismo contra los carros de nuestros residentes y visitantes, sino también, disminuir las cifras actuales.”, manifiesta el capitán Arango. La acción inmediata, tras conocer las estadísticas reportadas por la Unidad de Análisis de Delitos del Departamento de Policía de Doral, fue incrementar el patrullaje en las áreas donde ocurren los robos a vehículos con mayor frecuencia, como lo son los centros comerciales, los restaurantes y las áreas residenciales. Sin embargo, el esfuerzo que los oficiales de la Policía de Doral están haciendo no se limita a las acciones de calles, también están realizando un trabajo preventivo y educativo. “El Departamento de Policía de Doral emitió un comunicado de prensa, en el cual hizo un llamado a los residentes a retirar los objetos de valor de la vista y a cerrar las puertas de sus vehículos,”, agrega el capitán Arango. Esta campaña del Departamento de la Policía de Doral se ha expandido a los medios de comunicación social y a las redes sociales, a través del uso de Twitter, mediante el cual se promueve la realización de reuniones comunitarias, con el apoyo de las asociaciones de propietarios. Los oficiales también han ido de puerta en puerta, en los conjuntos afectados, dejando folletos informativos y conversando con los residentes sobre la importancia de la prevención de la delincuencia. “Es importante que todos entendamos que los residentes y los comerciantes juegan un papel primordial en el éxito de estos programas de seguridad, por lo que deben participar activamente y educarse sobre las medidas preventivas que deben tomar individualmente y como grupo de vecinos y/o comerciantes unidos”. Una parte importante de esta campaña de concientización, es la prevención durante las temporadas altas o de mayor movimiento comercial, pues las personas acostumbran a visitar centros comerciales e ir dejando lo que compran en sus carros. “Los ladrones saben esto y van a caza de los vehículos en los centros de compra, por lo que es importante

tener especial cuidado en estos sitios”. Considera el capitán Arango que los esfuerzos que se están realizando, están dando resultados positivos, pues el incremento de oficiales en las calles, la educación comunitaria y las campañas a través de las redes sociales han frenado la tendencia. “En los últimos 10 días contabilizados (del 13 de febrero al 22 de febrero del 2017) sólo cuatro robos a vehículos fueron reportados a la policía.” La Policía de Doral insiste en hacer recomendaciones a la comunidad. “Debemos entender que los robos a vehículos son, en su mayoría, un delito de oportunidad, por lo que, cuanto más fácil se lo pongamos al ladrón, más probable será que seamos víctima de ellos. Le damos una oportunidad al ladrón cuando dejamos nuestros carros abiertos y cuando tenemos objetos de valor dentro de ellos, especialmente cuando estos artículos están a la vista”. Usted puede reducir en gran medida su probabilidad de ser víctima de robo de vehículos si: se estaciona en un área bien iluminada, no deja objetos de valor en su automóvil, no deja artículos de valor a la vista y cierra todas las puertas de su carro. “No lo haga fácil para los ladrones”. Arriving to the United States with a suitcase full of dreams is what makes all immigrants that come to this country equal. The difference is the personal struggle of each one to reach those dreams, as is the case of this outstanding group of Latin women.

nternational Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on March 8th and Latin women have been responsible of giving this day its fair value, women have been the main character in social struggles and have been able to make important sacrifices to defend their freedom, their rights, their families and their dreams. Every day, thousands of women get out to the streets to demand new rights, defend those that they have already achieved and to fight against those laws that discriminate or are against the equality of gender and opportunities. Today, while the immigration issue in the United States occupies a predominant position in the public opinion worldwide, women have also occupied an important part defending their right to stay in the United States where they have contributed so much. Recently, during the show “Premios lo Nuestro”, journalist Jorge Ramos made reference of five extraordinary Latin people and three of them are women. He spoke about the young gymnast and Olympic medalist Laurie Hernandez; the actress, producer and social activist America Ferrera and the model for marketing campaigns for important brands, Jillian Mercado. Maybe “extraordinary” is a subjective term, one difficult to define, we can probably say that this term refers to those people that make a difference, those that have achieved their personal, family and professional goals, and same as these three extraordinary women that were referred to by Jorge Ramos, here we present you with the stories of a group of women that are definitively: extraordinary.

TERESA BELLO BURGOS: “YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOOSE”

Teresa Bello-Burgos is a doctor specialized in orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry, she arrived from her native Dominican Republic in 1994, at age 28.

When she arrived she was single and was looking for new professional goals, she had just graduated from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. When she arrived to United States her first obstacle was the language, for this reason she devoted all her energy in learning English and getting professional training, until she was recognized as the first and sole Dominican woman in South Florida to be an accredited member of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (AAED). Today, Bello-Burgos has her own practice, Dr. Teresa BelloBurgos & Associates, which has two locations in Miami. According to her, discipline, dedication, work and perseverance are the key to achieving the professional success that she enjoys today, next to her husband Julio and her two kids. “Professional success is nothing if you do not take care of your family”, states Dr. Bello-Burgos and she adds that her recommendation to the young women that arrive to the United States in search of a dream is to focus in that dream, be responsible and understand that sacrifices are necessary, to keep their family values, and always remember that “if you snooze, you loose.”

RACHEL TOURGEMAN: “PASSION FOR THE COMMUNITY”

In her native Panama, her parents owned a store that burned down, this destabilized the family’s economy and this made them come to the United States because it was a nation of progress, freedom and justice. Rachel Tourgeman was only three months old at that time, today she feels blessed by the decision that her parents took. Political Science, Psychology and Justice have guided her academic path. Her personal path has been marked by her passion for servicing the community and the common good, these characteristics made her serve for Miami Dade County for more than 30

years, during these years she stood out in the areas of racial problems, domestic violence and human services. He currently serves as Director for Community Relations at Florida National University, where she works hard to highlight the importance of education for the future and to instill in the students the importance of helping your neighbor. Under this vision of life, based in helping others, Rachel Tourgeman recommends to those that want to come to this country that they should not feel defeated because everyone has the right to live legally in a country of great opportunities.

LAURA TOBI: “YOUR WORLD GROWS”

Today, Laura Tobi is the founder and director of the educational center dedicated to artistic development in Doral, “The Art Shack”, but getting here was not an easy task. She arrived to Miami from Argentina in 2001 with her husband and daughter, facing a difficult economic situation that forced them to search for financial opportunities in the United States. At age 33, Laura and her family had to start over. Teacher by profession, she searched for jobs in places dedicated to childhood education, but she was not able to do what she liked always. Due to a job related injury in her back, she started taking care of children in her house, then in public and mobile places, and she finally was able to get 45 children and she decided to open her own place; place that today has a great recognition. “Today, I am happy to see how creativity changes the life of my students. I have been able to share my passion for creativity, thanks to having work hard and constantly, therefore my advice to those that want to start a new life in this country is to give the best of you, always with a good attitude, learn English, help others and never look back, always look forward, because that will make your world grow.”

IVONNE FERNANDEZ: “EDUCATION DOES NOT NEED VISA”

“Education does not need visa” is the phrase with which Ivonne Fernandez summarizes her recommendation to those that emigrate to the United States. “We need to be clear in the fact that we need to adapt to the country, the United States will not change for us, we need to face an adaptation process that we will only be able to overcome if we use the education and values that we have learned from our families.” Ivonne Fernandez was born in Colombia, she arrived in the United States in 2000, her search was more on the emotional side of her life than on the economic or professional one. The first thing that she did was to learn and respect the culture in the United States, understanding that civic obedience is fundamental to be respected as an immigrant. Today she is a radio personality, she is member of the non for profit association that helps people of age,

AARP, and founder of Destino Academy, a company dedicated to putting in contact community organizations so they can invest academic resources in the development of local companies. The first and basic thing to do is to learn the language. To learn abilities to be able to perform qualified jobs and to be open to learning is the main advice that Ivonne Fernandez gives to immigrant women, she also recommends them to never forget their education, their values and their ability to help others.

ELIZABETH CANCHOLA: “ALWAYS BE POSITIVE”

The community and voluntary work of Elizabeth Canchola speaks by itself of her success both professionally and socially. She is currently Acting Chair for the Parks and Police 4Kids Foundation and a former member of the Cultural Affairs Advisory Board of the City of Doral, apart from participating actively in the school activities of our city. Actuary by profession and a coffee lover, Elizabeth arrived from Mexico in the year 2000 due to a job transfer to Miami. Upon her arrival she became interested in social issues and started getting involved in community work, today she has the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of lots of farm workers of South Florida, to participate in her children’s schools, in her community and, in her city. “The most important thing to me has been to be convinced of the things I do and why I do them.” Elizabeth’s advice and encouragement to all the women that arrive to the United States, is to participate actively in their immediate circle. “Learn the culture, the rules, the do’s and don’ts, participate in your children’s schools, put your knowledge and your free time to good use. This will help you be busy, learn about the culture, it will open doors to many opportunities and always have an open mind while staying positive.”

ELIZABETH NUNEZ: “WEAR THE HEELS PROPERLY”

Elizabeth Nuñez is known by her contagious and inspiring smile, maybe this is the engine that has solidified her in the United States as an entrepreneur and community leader. Through her Foundation, Business 2Action and her company Laserland & Adventure she has been dedicated to unite businesses with schools and children and family,

entertainment respectively. She arrived from Venezuela in August of 2010, with her family, in search of better opportunities for her children and to reach new professional goals for her and her husband, for this reason she understood that the main thing was to understand how does life and work operate in the United States, she established a plan and set up personal and professional goals. “I believe it is fundamental to take maximum advantage of the abilities that we have, as women to handle several facets at the same time. It is important to develop good friendships that help you in the adaptation process so you can achieve your personal and professional goals, and to be able to transform them from a dream to a reality. In few words, it is important to wear the heels properly and get out to the conquest of new stages in your life.”

CAROLINA SIVOLI: “FAMILY IS FIRST”

Carolina Sivoli directs her own consulting and business development company that works for private and public companies, Sivoli Consulting Corp. This after having work for more than 13 years with two Miami Dade Commissioners and later for the Miami Mayor. She definitely has ample experience in government management. Having been able to occupy these public positions was a big success in the professional life of Carolina Sivoli, she is Venezuelan by birth, she arrived to Miami in 1992. When she arrived she defined new goals that she met with perseverance and commitment. To those that are starting the path that she has already walked, Carolina’s recommendation is to get informed about the options that they have in this new path, this will help them make the correct decision, it is also important to never stop learning. “You can not be scared of the problems, you need to face them and get over them, but always remember that it does not matter how much professional success you have or you want to achieve, the family is always the most important thing.” For these women, as for a lot of Latin people, the American dream is a reality, they have broken barrier, stereotypes and opened borders in the social, professional and political spectrum. The path they have walked has not been easy, but all of them are an example that success has no nationality, visa or immigration status.

GEORGINA PRATS: “DARE”

Georgina Prats is the example of those immigrants that made Miami what it is today: a cosmopolitan city, thriving, successful and definitively the place where everyone wants to be. She belongs to that group of Cubans that was forced to leave their native land running away from communism. “I was born in La Habana, Cuba, when I arrived to Miami in 1960 I was 17 years old. I came with my family because my father’s business had been confiscated by the government, therefore we had no option but to leave our country, but the truth is that we arrived to the country of opportunities where even without a college degree and with four kids, I started working on real estate and was leader of one of the most important real estate firms at that time, Prats and Associates,” she states. For Georgina, the key to success is to dare, and after several successful stories in the real estate business, she decided to change paths and start a career in education, today she is the Principal of Shelton Academy and Joy of Learning, institutions that offer a modern focus in education, where the children develop a free line of thinking, creativity and a strong self esteem. “To the women of today I will give you five key advices: dare, give your maximum effort, be creative, never give up and set goals for yourselves.”

l Día Internacional de la Mujer se celebra cada 8 de marzo en todo el mundo y la mujer latina se ha encargado de darle un justo valor a este día, pues ha sido protagonista de las luchas sociales y ha sido capaz de hacer grandes sacrificios para defender su libertad, sus derechos, a sus familias y a sus sueños. Día tras día, miles de mujeres salen a las calles para demandar nuevos derechos, defender los ya conquistados y luchar contra aquellas leyes que las discriminen o que rechacen el principio de igualdad de sexos y de oportunidades. Hoy en día, cuando el tema migratorio en Estados Unidos ocupa el interés de la opinión pública mundial, las mujeres han ocupado un papel primordial al defender su derecho a permanecer junto a sus familias dentro en la nación americana, a la cual le han hecho importantes aportes. Recientemente, en la entrega de “Premios Lo Nuestro”, el periodista Jorge Ramos hizo referencia a cinco latinos extraordinarios y tres de ellos, son mujeres. Quizás “extraordinario” sea un término subjetivo y difícil de definir, al cual nos podríamos aproximar al referirnos a personas que hacen la diferencias, al haber alcanzado y superado sus metas personales, familiares y profesionales y así como son de extraordinarias las tres mujeres mencionadas por Jorge Ramos, a continuación, les presentamos la historia de un grupo de mujeres, definitivamente, extraordinarias.

TERESA BELLO BURGOS: “EL QUE SE CANSA, PIERDE”

Teresa Bello-Burgos es doctora especializada en odontología cosmética y llegó de su natal República Dominicana en 1994, cuando tenía 28 años de edad. En ese entonces esta soltera y venía en

busca de nuevos horizontes profesionales, tras haberse graduado en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. Llegó a Miami y su primer obstáculo fue el idioma, por lo que concentró todas sus energías en aprender inglés y capacitarse profesionalmente, hasta ser reconocida como la primera dominicana y única latina en el Sur de la Florida en ser miembro acreditada de la Academia Americana de Odontología Estética (AACD). Hoy en día, Bello-Burgos dirige su propio consultorio, Dr. Teresa Bello-Burgos & Associates, el cual tiene dos sedes de Miami. Para ella, la disciplina, dedicación, el trabajo y la perseverancia son la clave para lograr el éxito profesional del que goza en la actualidad, junto a su esposo Julio y sus dos hijos. “Nada haces con el éxito profesional, si no cuidas de tu familia”, comenta la doctora Bello-Burgos y agrega que le recomienda a todas las mujeres jóvenes que llegan a Estados Unidos en busca de un sueño, que se enfoquen en él, que asuman y entiendan los sacrificios necesarios, que conserven sus valores familiares y que recuerden que “el que se cansa, pierde”.

RACHEL TOURGEMAN: “PASION POR LA COMUNIDAD”

En su natal Panamá, la tienda de sus padres se incendió, lo que desestabilizó económicamente a su familia que vino a Estados Unidos porque era la nación del progreso, la libertad y la justicia. Para ese entonces, Rachel Tourgeman tenía sólo tres meses de nacida, por lo que hoy se siente bendecida de la decisión tomada por sus progenitores. Las ciencias políticas, la psicología y la justicia han guiado su rumbo académico. Su rumbo personal ha estado marcado por su pasión por el servicio a la comunidad y el bien común, características que la llevaron a servir al Condado de Miami-Dade por más de 30 años, durante los cuales se destacó en las áreas de problemas raciales, violencia doméstica y servicios humanos.

En la actualidad se desempeña como directora de relaciones comunitarias de la Universidad Nacional de la Florida (Florida National University, por su denominación en inglés), donde se avoca a resaltar la importancia de la educación para el futuro, así como a inculcar la importancia de ayudar al prójimo. Bajo este esquema de vida, basado en ayudar a los demás, Rachel Tourgeman, le aconseja a quienes desean venir a este país, que no se dejen vencer porque todos tienen derecho a vivir legalmente en una nación de grandes oportunidades como Estados Unidos.

LAURA TOBI: “TU MUNDO SE AMPLIA”

Hoy en día, Laura Tobi, es la fundadora y directora del centro educativo dedicado al desarrollo artístico “The Art Shack” en Doral, pero llegar a este punto no fue fácil para ella. Proveniente de Argentina, llegó a Miami en el año 2001, junto a su esposo e hija, enfrentando una difícil situación económica, que les los obligó a buscar oportunidades financieras en Estados Unidos. A los 33 años, Laura y su familia volvieron a comenzar. Educadora de profesión, trató de ubicarse laboralmente en sitios dedicados a la enseñanza infantil, sin embargo, no siempre pudo hacer lo que gustaba. Un accidente laboral que afectó su espalda, la hizo dedicarse a cuidar pequeños en su casa, luego en sitios públicos y móviles, hasta que logró aglutinar a 45 niños y decidió abrir su propia sede, la cual hoy goza de gran prestigio. “Hoy en día, trabajo feliz cada día viendo como la creatividad cambia la vida de mis alumnos. GEORGINA PRATS: “ATREVANSE”

Georgina Prats es el ejemplo de esos inmigrantes que hicieron de Miami lo que es hoy en día: una ciudad cosmopolita, pujante, exitosa y definitivamente, el lugar a donde todos quieren venir. Ella pertenece a ese grupo de cubanos que fue obligado a abandonar su tierra natal para huir del comunismo. “Nací en La Habana, Cuba y cuando llegué a Miami, en 1960, tenía 17 años. Vine con mi familia, pues el negocio de mi padre fue confiscado por el gobierno, así que no tuvimos más opciones que salir de nuestro país, pero la verdad es que llegamos al país de las oportunidades, donde, sin haber podido tener una educación universitaria y con cuatro niños, me dediqué a la venta de bienes raíces y lideré una de las compañías de Real Estate más grandes del momento, Prats and Associates”, comenta. IVONNE FERNANDEZ: “LA EDUCACION NO NECESITA VISA”

“La educación no necesita visa” es la frase con la que Ivonne Fernández resume su recomendación a quienes emigran a Estados Unidos. “Hay que tener claro que nosotros debemos adaptarnos al país, pues Estados Unidos no va a cambiar por nosotros, tenemos que enfrentar un proceso de adaptación que sólo podremos superar si usamos la educación y los valores que traemos de nuestras familias”. Ivonne Fernández nació en Colombia y llegó a Estados Unidos en el año 2000, buscando un cambio de vida en el área emocional, más que a nivel económico o profesional. Lo primero que hizo fue aprender y respetar la cultura de los Estados Unidos, entendiendo que la obediencia cívica es fundamental para ser respetado como inmigrante. Hoy en día es locutora de radio, miembro de la asociación sin fines de lucro que ayuda a las personas de la tercera edad, AARP y fundadora

de Destino Academy, dedicada a unir a organizaciones comunitarias para invertir recursos académicos en el desarrollo de empresas locales. Aprender el idioma, lo primero y lo básico. Adquirir habilidades para ejercer trabajos calificados y estar dispuesta a aprender es el consejo primordial que Ivonne Fernández le da a las mujeres inmigrantes, a quienes le recomienda nunca olvidar su educación, sus valores y su capacidad para ayudar a los demás.

ELIZABETH CANCHOLA: “SIEMPRE POSITIVAS”

La labor comunitaria y voluntaria de Elizabeth Canchola habla por sí sola de sus éxitos profesionales y sociales. Es presidenta de la fundación Parks and Police 4 Kids y fue miembro del comité de asesoría cultura de la Ciudad de Doral, además de participar activamente en las actividades de las escuelas de nuestra ciudad. Actuaria de profesión y amante del café, Elizabeth llegó de México en el año 2000, tras ser transferida por motivos laborales a Miami. Aquí empezó a interesarse por los temas sociales e involucrarse en el trabajo comunitario, por lo que hoy tiene la oportunidad de hacer una diferencia en la vida de muchos trabajadores del campo en el Sur de la Florida, participar en las escuelas de sus hijos, en su comunidad y en su ciudad. “Lo más importante ha sido estar convencida de las cosas que hago y porque las hago”. A todas esas mujeres que llegan a Estados Unidos para conseguir una vida mejor, Elizabeth las anima a participar activamente en su círculo inmediato. “Aprendan las costumbres, las reglas, los “do’s & don’ts”, participen en las escuelas de sus hijos, pongan sus conocimientos y tiempo libre en uso. Eso las va a ayudar a sentirse ocupadas, a aprender sobre otra cultura y les va a abrir la puerta a muchas más oportunidades, simplemente teniendo una visión amplia y siendo siempre positivas”.

ELIZABETH NUÑEZ: “PONERSE BIEN ESOS TACONES”

A Elizabeth Nuñez la caracteriza su sonrisa contagiosa e inspiradora, quizás ese haya sido el motor que la ha llevado a consolidarse en Estados Unidos como empresaria y líder comunitaria. A través de su fundación, Business 2 Action y de su empresa, Laserland & Adventure, se ha dedicado a vincular los negocios con

las escuelas y al entretenimiento infantil y familiar, respectivamente. Llegó de Venezuela en agosto del 2010, junto a su familia, en busca de mejores oportunidades para sus hijos, así como para alcanzar nuevas metas profesionales para ella y su esposo, por lo que, desde el principio entendió que era primordial entender cómo se vive y trabaja en Estados Unidos, establecer un plan y ponerse metas personales y profesionales. “Creo que es fundamental aprovechar al máximo la capacidad que tenemos como mujeres de manejar varias facetas a la vez. Es importante desarrollar buenas amistades que te orienten y acompañen en tu adaptación para lograr que tu plan personal y profesional pase de ser un sueño a convertirse en una realidad. En fin, hay que ponerse bien esos tacones y salir a conquistar nuevas etapas”.

CAROLINA SIVOLI: “LA FAMILIA ES LO PRIMERO”

Carolina Sivoli lleva las riendas de su propia empresa de consultoría y desarrollo de negocios y empresas privadas y públicas, Silvoli Consulting Corp. Esto tras haber trabajo por más de 13 años con dos comisionados del Condado de MiamiDade y luego para la Alcaldía de Miami, por lo que tiene amplia experiencia en gerencia gubernamental. El haber ocupado estos cargos públicos significó un gran éxito en la vida profesional de Carolina Silovi, pues es venezolana de nacimiento y llego a Miami en el año 1992. Al llegar aquí se trazó nuevas metas, las cuales logró con perseverancia y constancia. A quienes empiezan a emprender el camino que ya ella recorrió, Carolina les recomienda informarse de las opciones que pueden tener en su nuevo destino, para poder tomar una buena decisión, así como nunca dejar de educarse. “No se puede tener miedo a los contratiempos, hay que enfrentarlos y superarlos, eso sí, siempre recordando que por mucho éxito profesional que tratemos de alcanzar, la familia es lo más importante”. n February 23, John I. Smith K-8 Center was recognized by School Board Member Susie V. Castillo for its tireless support of students Sebastian and Alejandro Mejia during an emotional ceremony. Sebastian and Alejandro, born in the USA and their parents from Colombia, have lived in this city since 2001. They are in 5th and 4th grade respectively and it’s there that they have distinguished themselves as being dedicated students, responsible and very polite children. Thanks to their contagious joy and candor, nobody could imagine at first sight that Sebastian and Alejandro have faced major obstacles throughout their lives. From the moment of their birth, both children were diagnosed with Bannayan-RileyRuvalcuba syndrome, a degenerative disease that can lead to other serious medical conditions that requires daily treatments and special care. In the face of the many challenges the brothers have encountered through their young lives, they credit the teachers and support staff at the school for aiding them in their successes. They have distinguished themselves as top students earning numerous awards for their academic performance and good behavior. Joined by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, and Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, Ms. Castillo presented School Principal Mr. Genaro Navarro with a proclamation in recognition John I. Smith K-8 Center’s unwavering support towards its students and its commitment to Superintendet Alberto Carvalho, Alejandro and Sebastian educational excellence for all. Smith K-8 Center por el apoyo incansable a los estudiantes Sebastián y Alejandro Mejía durante una emotiva ceremonia. Sebastián y Alejandro nacieron en USA y junto a sus padres originarios de Colombia, han residido en esta ciudad desde el 2001. Son estudiantes de 5to. y 4to. grado respectivamente y se han distinguido por ser estudiosos, responsables y muy educados. Gracias a su contagiosa alegría y candidez, nadie imaginaría que Sebastián y Alejandro han tenido que enfrentar grandes obstáculos a lo largo de sus vidas. Desde el momento de su nacimiento, ambos fueron diagnosticados con el Síndrome Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcuba, una enfermedad degenerativa que puede conducir a otras condiciones médicas serias que requieren tratamientos diarios y cuidados especiales. Frente a los muchos desafíos que los hermanos Mejía han encontrado a través de sus vidas, no dejan de reconocer a los maestros y al personal de la escuela por el apoyo y ayuda en lograr cada uno de sus éxitos. Se han distinguido como los mejores estudiantes ganando numerosos premios por su desempeño académico y buen comportamiento. olleges are beginning to respond to students in regards to acceptance for the fall semester and with an acceptance letter comes a financial aid award letter too. This is when parents and student need to have a serious discussion about which college is the best fit academically, socially, and financially. Colleges will publish on their website their “Cost of Attendance” but do not confuse this number with tuition cost. Cost of Attendance includes tuition, housing, meal plans, textbooks, transportation, and other incidentals – some of which are estimated costs. Not all of these costs will apply to your student! Also keep in mind that costs are based on either an academic year that runs from approximately August through May or a semester which runs 12-15 weeks. There are two semesters per academic year. If you submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you should have gotten a response back on how much financial aid has been awarded to your student. The form opened on October 1st, but if you still haven’t completed this form- HURRY, you have until June 30th! The financial aid that is awarded via the FAFSA includes Federal, State, and in some cases the college’s own funding. Scholarships from private organizations are not included on the FAFSA, but some organizations may ask you to demonstrate financial need via your FAFSA data. The information you submit on the FAFSA is in large part based on the income tax return parents or the student submit, but it is possible to complete the FAFSA if a tax return has not been filed. Federal financial aid includes different grants but the main one is the Pell Grant. This is money you do NOT have to pay back – it is a gift. FASFA will also determine if you qualify for a student loan. You are not required to accept this loan as it is a CHOICE. Loans do have to be paid back. Subsidized loans are offered to those who have financial need and interest on the loan is paid by the government while you are in school. Unsubsidized loans are offered to those who do not have a financial need and interest on the loan is paid by you while in school. There is also a PLUS loan that could be offered to parents to help with the financial burden of supporting students in college. The FAFSA may also be used to determine if the student qualifies for State Financial Aid. In Florida, as in some other states, there is a separate form in addition to the FAFSA that is used to determine State Financial Aid. State Financial Aid includes grants (free money) but also the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. Colleges are also able to offer their own scholarships which could be based on financial need as evident on the FAFSA or it could be based on academic achievements through Merit Scholarships. Scholarships have specific requirements that need to be met, but if met – this is also money that does not need to be paid back as you apply it toward college costs. Private scholarships are offered by numerous organizations and they can also be academic or merit based, but there are also many awarded for sports, hobbies, ethnic background, religion, or even a contest. Finding these scholarships and applying for them are completely the responsibility of the student. If the financial aid you are being awarded is not enough, do not despair. Call the financial aid advisor at the college and speak to them regarding your challenges. The student should express their strong desire to attend this particular college, but that they need more grants or scholarships to meet the cost. Perhaps there was a special financial circumstance in the family that could not be reflected in the FAFSA? Explain to the financial aid advisor- they can make that adjustment. Also, there is still time to apply for scholarships. Some may only be $500, but some are in the thousands! $500 may not seem much, but those $500 could cover textbooks in one semester. Financial Aid information, applications, and award letters can be intimidating. However, don’t be afraid to ask questions and ask for more money. Take each entry on your award letter line by line and read the requirements carefully. The job of your financial aid advisor is to help you pay for school – use their services.

Food allergy: Basics and Beyond

ood allergies are a growing food safety and public health concern. They affect 4%–6% of children and up to 4 % of adults in the United States. Food allergy symptoms are most common in babies and children, but they can appear at any age. Though less common; one can develop an allergy to foods eaten for years without a problem. Why do food allergies happen? The body’s immune system keeps one healthy by fighting off infections and other dangers to good health. A food allergy reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to a food or a substance in a food, identifying it as a danger and triggering a protective response. Which foods can be involved? While any food can cause an adverse reaction, eight types of food account for about 90 % of the reactions; Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Soy, Peanuts, Tree nuts, Fish and Shellfish. What are the symptoms of food allergies? Symptoms of food allergy can range from mild to severe. They can present with one or more of the following: vomiting, abdominal pain, hives, tongue or throat swelling causing hoarseness or difficulty talking, inability to breathe, repetitive cough, wheezing, dizziness or feeling faint, weak pulse. Anaphylaxis is the most severe presentation of food allergy in which 2 or more of the above described symptoms happen together. This can be life threatening and has to be treated immediately. One should call 911 in case of having a life threatening reaction. A food allergy will usually cause some sort of reaction every time the trigger food is eaten. The symptoms may be the same or different every time. The symptoms might even worsen with each exposure.

What is the timing of the reaction in relation to food? Most food-related symptoms occur within two hours of ingestion; often they start within minutes.

Is there other kind of reaction related to food allergy? There are some delayed reactions in the form of worsening eczema in some individuals. There are also some gastrointestinal conditions involving delayed allergies to foods; namely Eosinophilic Esophagitis. There is also a delayed food allergic condition called FPIES (food

protein induced enterocolitis syndrome) which is usually seen in babies. It involves severe vomiting and diarrhea which can lead to dehydration and shock. What is the amount of food which can trigger a reaction? The amount of food needed to trigger an allergic reaction is different for everyone. Some people react to just a tiny exposure of food and some react after ingest a larger amount. How is food allergy diagnosed? You should talk about your symptoms with your primary doctor and discuss about seeing a specialist who deals with allergies. An allergist is a specialist doctor who is trained to diagnose and manage food allergies. To make a diagnosis, the allergist will ask detailed questions about your medical history and your symptoms. They will also order skin testing and/or blood tests to arrive at a diagnosis. Skin testing involves pricking the skin with an allergen extract and a control and monitoring the area for a wheal/flare reaction (looks like a mosquito bite) . The test is not painful but the skin can be itchy where the extract is placed. A positive test does not always mean an allergy but a negative test is helpful in ruling it out. The blood tests are less accurate than the skin tests. Your allergist might use one or both types of tests to diagnose food allergies. How is food allergy treated? The primary way to manage a food allergy is to avoid

consuming the food that triggers the allergy. There is currently no cure for food allergies; nor are there medicines to prevent reactions. Read food labels to ensure that you don’t eat foods that contain ingredients which you are allergic to. Many ingredients have alternative names which can be confusing. Always ask about ingredients when eating at restaurants or when you are eating foods prepared by family or friends. In case you have severe food allergy; carry an epinephrine auto injector which is prescribed by your doctor. It is a lifesaving medication which is injected into the thigh muscle in case you are having anaphylaxis. Antihistamines like Benadryl can also be used in case of mild symptoms. Talk to your allergist about having an anaphylaxis action plan and discuss treatment approach for mild symptoms. It is especially important for children with severe food allergies in day care and school to have well documented list of food to be avoided and have an epinephrine auto injector available at all times. School personnel should know how to handle emergency situations. What is difference between food allergy and food intolerance? Many people who think they are allergic to a food may actually be intolerant to it. Some of the symptoms of food intolerance and food allergy are similar, but the differences between the two are very important. Proper diagnosis and distinction between food allergies and intolerance is important which can be done by an allergist. Can I outgrow my food allergies? It is possible for children with food allergies to grow out of them; this is especially true for foods like milk, eggs, wheat and soy. Peanut and tree nut allergies tend to be more persistent. Allergies which develop later in life tend to be lifelong. Your allergist can help in figuring this out. I am allerigic to peanuts, is my child allergic to it? Not necessarily, though immediate family members may be at an increased risk for food allergies. Your allergist can do simple tests to figure this out.

Amarilis Savón, Campeona mundial de Judo

A quienes no la conozcan, se las presento:

lla es Amarilis Savón Carmenate, judoca nacida en Santiago de Cuba el 13 de mayo de 1974. Campeona mundial en 2003, ganadora de medallas de bronce en los Juegos Olímpicos Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 y Atenas 2004 y triple campeona en Juegos Deportivos Panamericanos. En total atesora diecisiete preseas en diferentes torneos y es considerada una de las mejores deportistas cubanas del siglo veinte. Su nombre es referencia a nivel mundial dentro del judo femenino que dominó durante más de una década en la categoría de 48 kg y posteriormente en la de 52, en la que logró el Oro en el Mundial de Osaka. Actualmente vive en Miami e imparte sus conocimientos a jóvenes deportistas de la ciudad de Pembroke Pines, donde es entrenadora del club Panther Judo. Madre de dos niñas, hizo un tiempo entre trabajo, deporte y familia para responder nuestras inquietudes y así poder saber un poco más de ella.

Eres una leyenda viva del judo femenino. Tus medallas hablan solas y son muestra de tu determinación y fe en ti misma. Qué es ser una mujer luchadora? A. Una mujer luchadora es aquella que, a pesar de muchas adversidades, es capaz de salir adelante, salir triunfante. No nos dejamos ganar por las dificultades. Lo más grande es nuestro optimismo de lograr nuestros sueños, valorar lo que hacemos y reconocernos a nosotras mismas.

No es un secreto para nadie que muchas de las grandes disciplinas deportivas estuvieron reservadas casi exclusivamente para los hombres hasta hace solo pocas décadas. Cómo romper con el esquema y demostrar que las mujeres son tan competitivas o incluso más que los deportistas masculinos? A. Las mujeres somos más competitivas que lo hombres ya que luchamos por lo que queremos sin esperar a que nadie nos ayude. Nos trazamos una meta para alcanzar un objetivo deseado. En torno a las mujeres que practican deportes, y sobre todo de contacto, tiende a haber muchos estigmas sobre su feminidad. Cómo has sufrido y superado estos prejuicios?

A. Primeramente saber que eres una mujer, identificar que es un deporte fuerte y duro. Eso no quiere decir que seas o no femenina. Recuerdo después de cada clase ducharme y maquillarme. Nadie pensaría que fuese judoca. Me veían muy delgada, inocente. En la actualidad digo que soy judoca y me miran con asombro. Trato de de poner ubicarme en cada momento en el que estoy. Leí en una entrevista que te hicieron lo orgullosa que te sientes de ser madre. Tratando de conocer el lado más sensible de una implacable judoca: cómo compararías tu primera medalla olímpica en Barcelona, con la venida al mundo de tu primera hija? Hay forma de establecer algún paralelismo, partiendo de la idea que ambas situaciones en tu vida fueron momentos únicos? A. No las puedo comparar. Son dos cosas diferentes: mis hijas son un regalo de Dios, mis medallas son fruto de todo mi esfuerzo y dedicación al deporte. De la entrenadora a la madre: aplicas la rigurosidad de la disciplina que debes tener con tus deportistas y la llevas hacia tus hijas en la casa? Cuál es el punto de equilibrio? A. Trato de implantar disciplina en horario, dedicación a lo que uno realmente quiere, pero es difícil en este mundo tan desarrollado. Mi punto de equilibrio es ser sincera conmigo misma y ser un ejemplo para ellas. Los niños son una esponja, ellos son una fotocopiadora, pero esto no quiere decir que tus hijos van hacer lo mismo que hiciste tú. Sin lugar a dudas tus logros han sido a base de constancia y valores. Cuáles de esos aspectos que te llevaron a la cima crees que deberían potenciarse en la sociedad moderna para el rescate de conceptos tan importantes como la familia y la auto confianza que tienden a perderse en un mundo de frivolidades? A. Disciplina, constancia, dedicación y sobre todo amor por lo se hace. Para aquellas mujeres que se sienten menos o que dicen que algo es imposible, cuál es tu mensaje? A. Nada es imposible, solo tienes que creer en ti. Saber que eres única, bella, fuerte, inteligente, hermosa. Nada es imposible, solo está en tu mente.

Cuando te dicen que eres un ejemplo a seguir y miras hacia tus comienzos, qué balance sacas? A. Miro mi dedicación y el amor que siento por el judo. Sin amor no se logra nada. Cambiarías algo de tu vida? A. Qué cambiaría? No sé! El analizar más las cosas antes de actuar… pero soy feliz con el camino que he tomado. Amarilis Savón aprovecha cada segundo de su día. El tiempo es implacable en las sociedades modernas y el tráfico y las distancias no entienden de la disciplina de los deportistas. Es un tema de adaptación y supervivencia. De luchar aunque ya no sea en el tatami, de sortear los atascos y seguir adelante. Se acerca su cumpleaños número 43, pero el tiempo no parece pasar por ella, virtud de quienes han convertido en templo sus cuerpos y aún se dedican a ellos sin descuidar lo más importante: el alma y el legado que como personas debemos dejar a nuestro paso. Muchas preseas se ha colgado en el cuello y, aunque ya no compita, día a día gana esos premios que no consisten en metal, pero que valen mucho más: el respeto de quienes la conocen y la ven como ejemplo a seguir. resident Donald Trump would implement some significant tax changes based on what it was proposed during his campaign. On January 23, 2017 he said from his chair in the Roosevelt Room of the White House “We are going to be cutting taxes massively for both the middle class and for companies”.

INDIVIDUALS

For individual taxpayers the new tax plan is looking to lower personal income tax rates from seven to three brackets, meaning 12 percent, 25 percent and 33 percent. Americans who make less than $75,000 would pay 12%, Americans with earnings between $75,000 and $225,000 would pay 25% and those with incomes of more than $225,000 would pay 33%. Individuals earning $112,500 and $190,150 and families earning between $225,000 and $231,450 will

see 2% - 5% increase in their taxes. Under these reforms, taxpayers making between $48,652 and $88,148 annually would save between $1,174 and $7,052, according to the Tax Foundation. The plan also would increase the standard deduction as follow: For single filers from $6,300 to $15,000 and for married couples filing jointly from $12,600 to $30,000. In regards the caps itemized for deductions would be $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for married couples filing jointly. It seems like the proposed plan wouldn’t benefit all taxpayers, Mr. Trump’s plan would annul personal exemptions for taxpayers and their dependents as well as the head of household filing status. Consequently, single parents with dependent children and most married households with at least three dependents would pay more in federal income taxes.

CORPORATIONS

American business would also have a substantial tax benefit, President Trump said the new administration will slash the corporate tax rate to 15% - 20% down, from the current level of 35%.

ESTATE TAX

The tax change also proposed to abolish the estate tax or commonly known as the “Death Tax,” which only applies to estates worth more than $5.45 million for individuals and $10.9 million for couples. If you are wondering when will the changes take effect, It is still unknown; for now we need to way until it is discussed in the congress and became law. In the meantime, remember to take care of your 2016 tax liabilities. MDC and SAS West Campus hosted a breakfast for City of Doral officials Miami Dade College West Campus President Roger Ramsammy and School for Advanced Studies (SAS) West Campus Principal Dr. Omar Monteagudo hosted a breakfast for City of Doral officials and School Board Member Susie Castillo on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. SAS is new to Doral this school year and Mr. Ramsammy and Dr. Monteagudo wanted to let the Doral city officials know about the tremendous opportunity now available to the residents of the City of Doral and how their constituents could apply for the program. SAS has recently been recognized by Newsweek as the Sixth Best High School in America and Niche in 2017 named SAS as the Number 1 high school in South Florida. 10th grade students with at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA may apply for SAS entry as 11th graders. SAS offers a two year program of rigorous Advanced Placement high school classes in the afternoons. SAS students take MDC college classes in the morning and 99% of the SAS graduates obtain an Associate in Arts degree from Miami Dade College a month before they graduated from high school. Both the high school SAS classes and the MDC college classes take place on the college campus. As a result, students are on the college campus full time Monday through Friday for

The students from the Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy students getting an exclusive visit from famed Hollywood Director Peter Bogdanovich on Monday, February 27, 2017. Just one day after the 89th annual Academy awards, the group of aspiring filmmakers and journalists had

the rare opportunity to ask questions and receive tips about his experience in the film industry. Bogdanovich is best known for directing Oscar winning films such as The Last Picture Show and What’s up Doc. He has worked with actors such as Barbara Streisand and Jeff Bridges. The television production

program at Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy offers High School students the opportunity to gain real life experience through courses related to Television Production and Broadcast Journalism.

Century Homebuilders Group presenta sus proyectos a Brickell Realty Group

Last Saturday February 25th, Doral’s Girl Scout Troop 552 engaged in the “Adopt-A-Street” program, by having a one mile stretch on 50th Street, from 107th Ave to 117th Ave assigned to them for maintenance and beautification. Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, together with City of Doral staff from the Public Works Department and Council aide representatives attended the designation event, where they unveiled the street sign and presented Ana Carolina Piernavieja, the Troop’s leader with a recognition award for their participation in the program. Mayor Bermudez addressed the attendees by saying: “Thank you to these girls from Doral’s Troop 552 for demonstrating leadership and dedication to continue making our city a better place to live”. He was favorably impressed by the enthusiasm demonstrated by the Girl Scouts as they cleaned and embellished the street, leaving their special touch as they worked: handmade decorations with colored stones and knitted embellishments on light poles simulating flower stems and leaves. The long term compromise for the Scout Troop is to continue to maintain the street in a clean state, free of trash and assist in making Doral a great place to live, work, learn, and play.
