Sinister Clowns force authorities to increase security during Halloween What started as pranks to make people scream, has turned into a social problem that has at times, provoked violent consequences, for this reason the Miami and Doral police departments are already in high alert against this phenomena.

s Halloween approaches, a time in which thousands of people get in costumes, the sight of the sinister clowns has multiplied and they have stopped being a funny prank. For this reason, the police authorities have been forced to increase the security and safety operatives against this phenomena of unknown origin. Even when the word “clown”, which has traditionally been linked to fun, entertainment, good times and laughs, a shadow of terror has fallen on this multicolored word. Weeks ago a new trend appeared in the United States and Canada, this is to get dressed in clown’s clothes to scare and intimidate people, including the use of fake weapons covered in blood or planning robberies and other type of crimes. It is as if we were in a terror movie, hundreds of people dressed as clowns have taken into the streets of several residential towns in the United States, Canada and some cities in Europe and Latin America, scaring its residents without any explanation. This phenomena, which was first reported this year on August 21st, has become massive in the last months, every day there are more reports arriving into police stations about strange people dressed as diabolic clowns, especially now that Halloween
approaches. This strange practice has even created alerts about children safety, as an example, authorities in Toronto, Canada had to open an investigation after a group called “Clowns in the Six” threatened through social media eight schools in the city, this forced the police to increase the number of patrols around the identified schools. Even with the increase of police presence, at least one person dressed as a diabolic clown was seen around one school in Toronto and even chased a group of students after school, according to the parents of one of the students. Unfortunately this is not the only incident in North America. There have been bigger issues including some with physical aggression to the victims, that have even suffered attacks from the diabolic clowns and in several universities in the United States, hundred of students have taken the streets to hunt the sinister clowns that, allegedly were prowling around campus. Social media has not escaped this phenomena. They are not only flooded with videos of sinister clowns scaring people, but also with hunters of clowns that instead of running away, they record them, or even try to defend themselves from the sinister attack, nevertheless the majority of the victims of these characters, prefer
to run away terrorized and in hopes that this unfortunate situation end up in just a big scare. In reality, this is a trend that had appeared before in the United States in 1981, when sinister clowns were seen in Boston and several areas of New England, harassing little children. The clowns lured the children with candy and invited them to get into mysterious vans. The “ghost clowns” as they were called at that time were seen in Kansas, Denver, Omaha and Pennsylvania. The bloodiest event took place between 1972 and 1978, when the serial killer John Wayne Gacy wandered in the streets dressed as “Pogo” a clown that he had created himself, this was the way in which he attracted his victims. At that time, “Pogo” killed 33 young men and even when today it has not been connected to the actual sinister clowns, it is still in the minds of the authorities and psychologists. Psychologists state that the appearance of these clowns can create trauma, especially when you consider that their exaggerated characterization in fact causes terror. There is also fear due to a double reaction during Halloween, it is foreseen that there will be a lot of people running away from clowns even if they do not look sinister, but there will also be those that will take advantage of the trend to scare the rest of the people, as of today the most sold costume for Halloween is, in fact, the clown costume. This story, that has already gone from fun to tragedy has another side: the one from the professional clowns that categorically reject the appearance of this diabolic characters because they are threatening the image that dedicated comedians have worked to build throughout centuries. The rejection towards clowns has been so big due to these sinister clowns, that even the fast food chain McDonald’s has decided to cut down the appearances of its emblematic mascot of the red nose, Ronald McDonald, to avoid it from being confused with the sinister clowns that have terrorized the population in the last weeks.

www.doralfamiyjournal.com The Miami Police has already advised on the appearance of some cases of the sinister clowns in the Miami Dade County, for this reason they have already created a video to inform the residents about the fact that these can turn into a public safety problem with heavy consequences. Police authorities advise that this strange way to have fun can end up with the alleged sinister clown arrested, after being denounced by a victim, sued by those that he intended to scare or even hurt after people defend themselves from him. There have also already been reports of some schools that have been placed in alert and reinforce their safety procedures due to alleged threats. The recommendation to the residents is not to open the door if a person dressed as a clown knocks, especially during Halloween given that there will be a lot of people that will try to take advantage of the popularity of these costumes and will use them. Safety authorities also advise that this phenomena has been fed by social media, for which they suggest to the parents to be more vigilant than before on the use that their children are doing of internet. The idea is to avoid that this turns into a real and virtual mass hysteria situation, the Miami Police officers explain.
As for our city, Officer Carlos Arango from the Doral Police Department assures us that there has not been any report of sinister clowns in any complex or adjacent area in Doral, nevertheless they are vigilant for the possible appearance of any of these characters during Halloween. “Doral must know that we will be present and prepared to assure the well being of our residents. We want to avoid that this phenomena affects our residents in Doral and that the impact of it goes no further than what we have seen through social media.” Explains officer Arango. “Our city has been fortunate that our Halloween celebrations have been quite calm and without any violence to deplore. We hope this year is not an exception but we want to avoid any unforeseen situation and as every year, we are taking additional precautions and reinforcing the safety in certain areas.” Arango explains that, as every Halloween they increase their presence in the streets: police cars, motor brigade, detectives, supervisors, school resource officers and the Police Service Aides are alert around all our streets, especially in the communities that are most visited during that night.

on la cercanía de Halloween o Noche de Brujas, ocasión en la que miles de personas se disfrazan, el avistamiento de payasos siniestros se ha multiplicado y ya ha dejado de ser motivo de broma, especialmente, para las autoridades policiales, que se verán obligadas a reforzar los operativos de seguridad ante este fenómeno de origen desconocido. Si bien es cierto que la palabra payaso ha ido tradicionalmente ligada a la diversión, los buenos momentos y las risas, un halo de terror parece haber cubierto este término multicolor. Hace varias semanas, apareció una moda en Estados Unidos y Canadá consistente en vestirse con ropa de payasos para amedrentar y asustar a la gente, incluso, portando armas blancas, aparentemente ensangrentadas o planeando robos u otros crímenes. Y es que, como si fuera una película de terror, cientos de sujetos disfrazados de payasos diabólicos han tomado las calles de diversos barrios residenciales de Estados Unidos, Canadá y algunas ciudades de Europa y América Latina, asustando a los residentes sin ninguna explicación. El fenómeno, que fue reportado por primera vez este año el 21 de agosto, se ha masificado en los últimos meses, siendo cada vez más los reportes que llegan a la policía, de extraños sujetos vestidos de payasos diabólicos, especialmente ahora que se aproxima Halloween. Esta extraña práctica ha llegado a alertar sobre la seguridad de los niños, pues, por ejemplo, las autoridades de Toronto en Canadá tuvieron que iniciar una investigación después de que un grupo denominado “Clowns in the Six” (Payasos en el Seis, por su traducción al español) amenazara a través de las redes sociales a ocho colegios de la ciudad, lo que obligó a la policía a aumentar el número de patrullas en torno a los centros educativos identificados. Lo peor es que, a pesar del incremento de la presencia policial, al menos un individuo disfrazado
de payaso diabólico fue visto en los alrededores de un colegio de Toronto e incluso persiguió a un grupo de estudiantes a la salida de sus clases, según el padre de uno de los alumnos. Desafortunadamente, este incidente no es el único registrado en Norteamérica. Los más graves hablan incluso de agresiones físicas a las víctimas, que sufren los ataques de individuos vestidos de payasos diabólicos y en varias universidades de Estados Unidos, centenares de alumnos se han lanzado a las calles a la caza de payasos siniestros que, supuestamente, merodeaban en los campus. Las redes sociales no han escapado de este fenómeno, pues no sólo están inundadas de videos sobre payasos siniestros atemorizando a la gente, sino también de cazadores de payasos que, lejos de huir, los graban o incluso tratan de defenderse del siniestro ataque, sin embargo, la mayoría de las posibles víctimas de estos personaje, prefieren salir corriendo aterrorizados y con la esperanza de que el desafortunado encuentro no pase de un susto. Realmente, se trata de una moda que ya había
aparecido antes en Estados Unidos, en 1981, cuando payasos siniestros fueron vistos en Boston y diversas zonas de Nueva Inglaterra, acosando a pequeños niños. Los sujetos atraían a los niños con dulces y los incitaban a subir a camionetas misteriosas. Los payasos fantasmas, como fueron bautizados en aquel entonces, fueron después avistados en Kansas, Denver, Omaha y Pennsylvania. Sin embargo, el caso más sangriento, fue entre 1972 y 1978, cuando el asesino en serie John Wayne Gacy, salía a las calles personificando a “Pogo”, un payaso que el mismo había creado, para de esta forma atraer a sus víctimas. En su momento, el payaso “Pogo” acabó con la vida de 33 hombres jóvenes y aunque, por el momento se considera un hecho aislado a la aparición actual de los payasos siniestros, no deja de saltar en las mentes de las autoridades y psicólogos. Para los psicólogos, la aparición de estos payasos siniestros puede llegar a causar traumas, especialmente, al considerar que, su aspecto exagerado efectivamente causa terror. También hay temor hacía una doble reacción en Halloween, pues se prevee que serán muchos que saldrán huyendo ante la aparición de cualquier payaso, aunque no sean siniestros, pero también habrá quienes aprovecharan la moda para asustar a los demás, pues en la actualidad el disfraz más vendido para Halloween es, efectivamente, el de payaso. Esta historia que ya ha pasado de la comedia a la tragedia, también tiene otra parte: la de la comunidad de payasos profesionales, que rechaza categóricamente la aparición de estos personajes diabólicos que atentan con la imagen de comediantes dedicados a la sana diversión y entretenimiento que durante siglos han formado. Tal ha sido el rechazo que se está generando en torno a los payasos diabólicos que, la cadena estadounidense de comida rápida McDonald’s ha decidido reducir, momentáneamente, el número de

apariciones públicas de su emblemático personaje de nariz roja, Ronald McDonald, para evitar que sea confundido con los siniestros payasos que han causado temor en la población las últimas semanas.

La Policía de Miami ya ha advertido sobre la aparición de algunos casos de payasos siniestros en el Condado de Miami-Dade por lo que, incluso, han elaborado un video para alertar a la ciudadanía sobre estos hechos que puede convertirse en un problema de seguridad pública con fuertes consecuencias. Los funcionarios policiales advierten que esta extraña forma de diversión puede terminar con el supuesto payaso siniestro arrestado, tras ser atrapado por la policía o denuniciado por alguna de sus víctimas, demandado por quienes pretendían asustar o hasta herido, cuando las personas actuén en defensa propia. Igualmente, ya hay reportes de que algunas escuelas han debido ponerse en alerta y reforzar la seguridad ante presuntas amenazas. Recomiendan a los ciudadanos no abrir las puertas, si alguna persona vestida de payaso toca a ellas, espacialmente ahora que llega Halloween
y habrá muchos que quieran usar este disfraz para aprovechar la popularidad de los payasos siniestros. Las autoridades de seguridad también advierten que este fenómeno ha sido alimentado por las redes sociales, por lo que también sugieren a los padres que estén más vigilantes que nunca sobre el uso que sus hijos le dan a internet. La idea es evitar que esto se conviertan en caso de histeria colectiva a nivel real y virtual, explican los oficiales de la Policía de Miami. En cuanto a nuestra ciudad, el oficial Carlos Arango de la Policía de Doral asegura que no han recibido reportes de apariciones de payasos siniestros en ningún vecindario o zona adyacente, sin embargo, están alerta ante la posible aparición de alguno de estos personajes en ocasión de Halloween. “La comunidad de Doral debe saber que estaremos presentes y preparados para asegurar el bienestar de
nuestros residentes. Queremos evitar que este fenómeno afecte a la ciudadanía doralina y que el impacto del mismo no sea más allá de lo que ya hemos visto a través de las redes sociales.”, explica el oficial Arango. “Nuestra ciudad tiene la fortuna de que las celebraciones de Halloween se han desarrollado con bastante tranquilidad y sin graves eventos violentos que lamentar. Esperamos que este año no sea la excepción pero como queremos evitar cualquier imprevisto, como cada año, estamos tomamos precauciones adicionales y reforzando la seguridad en ciertas áreas. Señala Arango que, cada Halloween aumentan su presencia en las calles: los patrulleros, los agentes motorizados, los detectives, los supervisores, los oficiales de las escuelas y los efectivos de Police Service Aides, se avocan a las calles para estar muy alertas ante las circunstancias que puedan presentarse, especialmente, en las comunidades que son más concurridas durante esa noche.

a Alcaldía de Doral sirvió de sede para la realización del primer encuentro conversacional en Doral del programa “My Miami Story”, una iniciativa de la Fundación Miami, traída a la ciudad por la fundación Parks and Police 4 Kids, con la intención de desarrollar ideas para el beneficio de la calidad de nuestros residentes y visitantes.
El evento fue coordinado por Elizabeth Canchola, Presidente de Parks and Police 4 Kids, quien explicó que “My Miami Story” es un programa desarrollado con la intención de que los miembros de las diferentes comunidades que viven Miami se unan y colaboren entre sí para buscarle soluciones a los problemas que más le preocupan. “Esta es la razón por la que Parks and Police 4 Kids se interesó en participar en este programa. Queremos que los vecinos de Doral y de todo Miami sepan no sólo que nuestra fundación existe, sino que también estén conscientes del trabajo que hacemos en pro de la ciudad y de sus residentes y que se involucren con nosotros en la búsqueda de soluciones, tal como lo plantea “My Miami Story”.

Explicó Canchola que para que las conversaciones efectivas, “My Miami Story” sugiere la

conformación grupos pequeños, por lo que esta ocasión se reunieron con varios residentes de Doral, entre ellos, Erin Weislow, Karina Alvarez, Mónica Flores, María Alejandra Pulgar y Laura Tobi, junto con el teniente Daniel Muñecas de la Policía de Doral y Bárbara Hernández, directora de Parques y Recreación. En el área educativa, se destacó la importancia de apoyar a las familias que tienen poco tiempo en el país y están incorporando a sus hijos al sistema educativo. “Son padres que quizás no hablan el idioma y que desconocen las facilidades de nuestro sistema escolar, como, por ejemplo, el programa ESOL, la importancia del voluntariado y los recursos web disponibles para la supervisión académica de sus hijos”. María Alejandra Pulgar manifestó que muchas personas tampoco conocen las leyes y la cultura del país, por lo que es importante la realización de talleres educativos como “Yo Soy Doral”, desarrollado por Doral Family Journal con la intención de orientar a los residentes de la ciudad en estos aspectos. En el área de parques, se señaló que Doral cuenta con seis parques, más otros dos que están en construcción, lo que refleja la importancia que se le da a las áreas verdes. Se hizo referencia a que en el parque de perros se está colocando más iluminación y el teniente Muñecas agregó que los
asaltos han disminuido en un 17%, lo que evidencia el eficiente funcionamiento de la seguridad en las áreas públicas, entre ellas en los parques. El punto focal en relación al arte y la cultura fue la implementación de estrategias que motiven a la gente a participar en este tipo de espectáculos. “Se nos ocurrió, por ejemplo, hacer presentaciones interactivas o conciertos que antes de empezar ofrezcan micrófono abierto al público.” “Definitivamente, “My Miami Story” es una forma de estimular la participación comunitaria y de ayudar a las personas que han emigrado a las diferentes ciudades de Miami-Dade y necesitan ser orientados en temas vitales para ellos como idioma, educación y leyes, por ejemplo”, comentó Canchola.

he ballot for the General Elections this year is comprised of four pages, a situation that can be somehow confusing to many new voters or even for the seasoned ones, because beyond choosing the President, Vice President and local authorities, Doral electors will have to vote for: Senators and Representatives to the US and State Congress; MiamiDade County Mayor and Clerk of the Circuit Court; Circuit Judges; Retention of State Supreme Court Judges; Retention of Judge of the Court of Appeals and the adoption of five amendments to the State Constitution and two to the County Charter. Partisan and nonpartisan voters in Doral will receive similar ballots, as the party affiliation was relevant only for the primary elections back in August, when registered Republicans or Democrats voted to select the candidates of their parties for the General Election in addition to expressing their opinion on general issues. Everybody is expected to approach the precincts on this election.

EARLY VOTING BEGINS OCTOBER 24th

Let’s clarify a few doubts that first-time voters in the US have: Once registered to vote, a person does not have to fill the registration form again, unless there has been a change of address or party affiliation. Only born or naturalized American Citizens can vote. Permanent Residents or any other immigrants are not allowed to vote. Voting is one of the main benefits of going through a legal immigration process to obtain American Citizenship, and is a right that has to be exercised responsibly. That is why becoming an informed elector is fundamental. There are three ways to vote in the United States: by mail through absentee ballot; early voting in person at designated centers or showing up to your designated precincts on General Election Day November 8th. Absentee ballots can be requested online, by phone, email, fax or letter through the MiamiDade Elections Department. The deadline to request one is November 2nd and should be mailed back before Election Day November 8th. They are excellent option for people who have difficulty to show up in person, such as seniors
or people with limited mobility, students at colleges far from their voting circuit, frequent travelers, etc. Early voting begins October 24th until November 6th, and the Miami-Dade Elections Department
has confirmed centers will be open from 7am to 7pm. Doral residents are lucky enough to have the Elections Department right in our neighborhood, next door to Doral Central Park on 87th Avenue.

On Election Day, the location of your precinct can be found on your Voters Registration Card that you should have received by mail upon registration or change of address. PUBLIC OFFICES AND AMENDMENTS: WHAT ARE THE CHOICES FOR DORAL RESIDENTS?
It is very important to emphasize to those voting for the first time in the US that on the General Election it does not matter if they do not like the candidate of the party they belong to, as this time the choices are open and they can still vote for the candidate from the other party. The vote is secret; nobody will know you did not vote Republican, or Democrat, or Libertarian. The important point is making the choices that on your perspective will be more beneficial for the Country, the State and your municipality regardless of your political affiliation. This is the most important election ever. The United States is a Great, beautiful Country, full of opportunities for its citizens and for those who come here in the pursuit of happiness. It is the responsibility of those of us, entitled to vote by our constitutional right as citizens of this great land, to approach the precincts and express our opinion, to help it continue being the land of the free, home of the brave, respectful, diverse and generous people it has always been.

a boleta de las Elecciones Generales de este año tiene cuatro páginas, algo que puede ser confuso tanto para nuevos votantes como para muchos habituados a ejercer su derecho. Además de elegir Presidente, Vicepresidente y Autoridades Locales, los votantes en Doral tendrán que seleccionar: Senadores y Representantes Federales y Estatales; Alcalde y Secretario del Condado Miami-Dade y Jueces de Circuito. También expresarán su opinión sobre la retención de Jueces de la Corte Suprema Estatal, Corte de Apelaciones, cinco enmiendas a la Constitución Estatal y dos enmiendas a la constitución del Condado. En Doral la boleta general es similar independiente de la afiliación política del votante, a diferencia de las elecciones de Agosto, cuando cada partido eligió sus candidatos, además de votar por algunos asuntos de interés general. En esta elección todos deben participar. Es un deber y un derecho.

VOTACIÓN ADELANTADA COMIENZA EL 24 DE OCTUBRE

Primero que nada aclaremos algunas dudas para quienes votan por primera vez en EEUU: Una vez registrado como elector, los votantes no tienen que hacerlo nuevamente a menos que hayan cambiado de dirección o de afiliación política. Solamente los Ciudadanos Americanos por nacimiento o naturalización pueden votar. Los Residentes Permanentes o cualquier otro estado migratorio NO están autorizados para votar. El derecho al voto es uno de los beneficios principales de pasar por un proceso migratorio legal y obtener la Ciudadanía Estadounidense. Es un derecho que debe ejercerse con responsabilidad, por lo tanto es importante que los electores estén bien informados. Se puede votar de tres maneras diferentes: por correo con boleta ausente; votación adelantada en los centros designados o asistiendo a los precintos el Día de las Elecciones, 8 de Noviembre. Las boletas ausentes pueden pedirse por internet, teléfono, email, fax o carta al Departamento de Elecciones de Miami-Dade (MDED). La fecha límite para solicitarlas es el 2 de Noviembre y deben ser devueltas antes del
8 de Noviembre. Son una excelente opción para quienes no pueden trasladarse en persona a votar bien sea por situaciones de salud, estudiantes en universidades fuera del estado, viaje, etc. La votación adelantada comienza el 24 de Octubre
hasta el 6 de Noviembre y el MDED ha confirmado que los centros de votación estarán abiertos de 7 am a 7pm. Los residentes de Doral tienen la suerte de contar con el MDED en su vecindario, justo al lado del Doral Central Park en la 87 Avenida.

Los ciudadanos de Doral tomarán decisiones sobre cargos públicos y enmiendas de su incumbencia, aparte de elegir las autoridades municipales, cuyos candidatos hemos reseñado en ediciones anteriores. Una breve descripción de las opciones se encuentra en las tablas comparativas que acompañan este artículo. Es importante enfatizar para quienes votan por primera vez en una elección general en los EEUU, que no importa si no les agrada el candidato del partido al cual pertenecen, en la elección general pueden votar por cualquier otro candidato. El voto es secreto, nadie sabrá que usted no votó Republicano; o Demócrata, o Libertario. El punto importante es que su decisión debe ser la que según su perspectiva sea la más beneficiosa para el país, el estado, el condado o su municipalidad, sin importar su afiliación política. ith an estimated investment of $10.5 million dollars, the City of Doral started the construction of the new Doral Glades Park, this is considered the first environmental park on our community, and will combine an exuberant natural ambiance with modern sport facilities. Doral Glades Park is spread around 25 acres of land, located on NW 74th street between NW 97th and NW 107th Avenues, its construction will go around a beautiful lake and swamp given that apart from being designed to be a sports activities and recreational area, it is also a homage to the Everglades in Florida. Given that it is inspired in the Everglades, this park will be habilitated with native plants and it will provide a natural habitat for the fish and animals of this re-known environment. The water ride that will be available in the facilities of this park, will be an educational experience without comparison about the swamps. As you will remember, the Parks and Recreation

During the inauguration of the construction of the Doral Glades Park, the Mayor of Doral, Luigi Boria stated that apparently Miami Dade Public School Board is planning on building a K-8th Center in the same street as Doral Glades Park in 2018, and that they are planning on having the City of Doral as a partner in this new school in hopes of including in their academic program the study of nature and environment, for which they will be allowed to use this park. Also, Vice Mayor Christi Fraga recognized the job that the Parks and Recreation Department
Hernandez stated that the City of Doral received a grant of $3.6 million dollars from the Florida Communities Trust to buy the land back in 2008 and $200 thousand dollars from the Water Conservation Grant for the development on the land. Florida Communities Trust assists cities and communities in the protection of natural resources and environment, through grants for the acquisition of land; they provide fund to local governments and eligible non for profit organizations to buy land for parks and open spaces, therefore their support was of great importance to make Doral Glades Park a reality.

on una inversión estimada de $10.5 millones de dólares, la Ciudad de Doral inició la construcción de un nuevo parque, Doral Gables Park, considerado el primer parque ambiental de nuestra comunidad y que combinará un exuberante ambiente natural con modernas instalaciones deportivas. Doral Glades Park abarca alrededor de 25 acres de terreno, está localizado en la 74 calle entre las avenidas 97 y 107 y su construcción se desarrollará alrededor de un hermoso lago y humedales, ya que además de estar diseñado para convertirse en un sitio para la recreación y la realización de actividades deportivas, es un homenaje al entorno único de los Everglades del estado de la Florida. Por estar inspirado en los Everglades, el parque contará con plantas nativas, así como proporcionará un hábitat para los peces y la fauna propias de esta reconocida zona. El paseo marítimo, que podrá realizarse dentro de las instalaciones del parque, será una experiencia educativa inigualable acerca de los humedales. Como se recordará, el Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Doral trabaja desde hace un buen tiempo en este proyecto y durante el 2015 la firma CPZ Architects fue escogida para la prestación de servicios de arquitectura e ingeniería y disciplinas afines para este parque que, en octubre del 2015, fue denominado Doral Glades Park, tras la aprobación del Concejo Municipal. Este nuevo parque sería el octavo para nuestra ciudad, contando con el beneficio de fusionar la tecnología y la naturaleza para educar a residentes de todas las edades sobre el desarrollo ambiental del estado de la Florida, pues contará con un centro de la naturaleza, paseos marítimos educativos, senderos y actividades como, kayak y pesca, entre otras. igh school juniors and seniors took the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude/Assessment Test) on October 1st in an effort to meet college admissions requirements at their college of choice. That means many parents have been asking me for recommendations on how to prepare for the test. Do you know a tutor? Can you recommend a test preparation site? Is there a book? Can my student prepare online? There are many options to prepare for the test and the route you chose to take depends on your particular student and how do they learn and study best. The SAT has a math section as well as a reading/writing section. Some colleges also want you to take specific SAT subject tests in addition to the standard SAT test. Figure out which college you would like to attend, carefully read their admissions requirements, and simply do what they ask you to do in regards to the SAT. In addition, there are many colleges that do not require the SAT! How do you study for the SAT? A good reader will do well on the test. How do you become a good reader? You practice. You do a lot of reading. Once you learn how to read as a child, you need to keep reading. It could be books, magazines, e-books, or comic books. The point is that you read and that

you read a lot. You can only improve your reading ability by reading as much as possible. Get away from the television and get a book. Parents, make sure your students are reading about a subject that they like so they can stay interested and keep reading. It does not need to be a classic novel, but with time and practice they should be advancing their reading skills. For the SAT test, the specific way to prepare is to read long non-fiction articles typically found in newspapers or news magazines. Students should read an article and then discuss the article with a parent or other adult. The SAT is going to provide similar reading material and then will ask you to use your analytical skills to answer questions. You not only need to answer the question, but also

indicate where you found the answer in the reading passage. The other section of the reading test also provides a long reading passage but asks for corrections on grammar, usage, punctuation, and the order or organization of sentences. Again, being a good and practiced reader assists in being able to score well in this section. However, you also need to pay attention in your Language Arts courses to learn the basic rules of grammar and punctuation. Finally, there is a writing section. The SAT will provide a passage with several paragraphs and then the student needs to write an essay about what they just read. In your essay you will need to argue for a particular point, you may need to evaluate evidence, perhaps even discuss the style of the writer. Let me repeat, only with practice will you be able to read the material well, but will also be able to respond in an intelligently written essay. Make sure that you check the colleges you are applying to and see if they even require the writing part of the SAT! The math section is a whole different approach. This is something you can definitely study. Review the rules, formulas, and strategies that your math teachers have taught you. The SAT math section includes basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry,
and many concepts from algebra II. The strongest recommendation I can make is that you take algebra II in your sophomore year of high school or if you take it in your junior year, wait until later in the school year to take the SAT. Reading also plays an important part in the math section. The SAT will have word problems in which the wording is rather dense. Read the problem carefully to determine exactly which math equation to put together. To do well on the SAT, of course you should study specifics. Start eight weeks before the test and don’t go overboard because you do want to show up for the test fresh and eager, not overworked and fed up with SAT practice. More importantly, parents, you need to start working with your children before they even get to high school. Help them with their math and if they have not taken algebra II before the SAT, wait. And- read, read, read, read, read. And then read some more.

omo ya sabemos, octubre es considerado el “Mes de la Sensibilización sobre el Cáncer de Seno”, fecha que se celebra a nivel mundial con el objetivo de aumentar la atención y el apoyo prestados a la sensibilización, la detección precoz, el tratamiento y los cuidados paliativos de esta enfermedad. Según las estadísticas de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, cada año se producen 1,38 millones de nuevos casos de cáncer de seno y un aproximado a los 500 mil fallecimientos por esta causa. Afortunadamente y en gran parte, gracias a la detección temprana, las tasas de supervivencia son cada vez mayores, dependiendo de la etapa de la enfermedad. Y es precisamente para esa gran cantidad de mujeres que logran ganarle la batalla al cáncer que la reconstrucción mamaria se ha vuelto parte integral de su recuperación. Muchas mujeres que se han hecho una mastectomía (operación quirúrgica para extirpar todo el seno con el fin de tratar o prevenir el cáncer) tienen la opción de reconstruir la forma del seno que fue extirpado.

“Se considera que una mujer no está curada hasta que no tiene una mama reconstruida satisfactoriamente”. here has been a strong stigma associated with asthma for years, which has caused patients and physicians alike to shy away from the diagnosis. However, I learned that if you do not make the diagnosis, you cannot treat the patient properly. The medical definition of asthma is “reversible airway obstruction”. This means that if someone has tightness of their airways which can be improved by giving a medication designed to open the airways, then that person has asthma. Asthma can also appear for the first time at any age, as up to 22% of new asthmatics are over the age of 65.

A common misconception is that asthma symptoms need to be constant (persistent). Asthma can in fact be intermittent as well as persistent. Also, not every person with asthma needs to have the same symptoms. These symptoms can include one or more of the following: coughing, chest tightness, chest pressure, wheezing, shortness of breath, mucus production (from the chest). Yet not every asthmatic has the same type of inflammation in their airways. Newer treatments are being developed to target more specific types of asthma.

In years past, people with asthma, especially children, were forced to sit out from physical activity with their friends, whether at school or at home, which led to significant social stigma its consequences. Today this is no longer the case. Many of my patients are surprised to learn that up to 10% of Olympic athletes and other world-class athletes have asthma! This is due to the many simple and effective treatments available today. However, asthma medications only work when taken as directed. Cutting corners or forgetting does not lead to the same results. Additionally, exercise has been shown in medical studies to improve lung function and even reduce the need for asthma medications in a person with asthma. But exercise can only be performed safely by a well-controlled asthmatic. Finally, by knowing their triggers; which include infections, allergies, and weather changes; asthmatics can avoid the triggers or prepare for worsening symptoms with medication changes. Asthma medications come in two categories: controllers and rescue. All patients with asthma need to have a rescue medication commonly an albuterol inhaler. This is used any time the patient experiences a flare of their asthma symptoms. One or two puffs from the inhaler can reduce or resolve the symptoms within minutes. A patient who only

has intermittent asthma may need only a recue inhaler and nothing else. A patient with persistent asthma will need to be on at least one daily controller medication, in addition to having a rescue inhaler at hand. When a patient with asthma experiences a flare in their asthma they will likely require adding a controller medication or increasing the dose of their usual controller medication until the flaring symptoms subside. They will also need to use their rescue inhaler more frequently to control symptoms until the additional controller medications take effect. Once the flare passes, the patient returns to their usual daily routine of medications; what they were taking before the flare started. Recently some newer “biologic” medications have been developed which are either injectable into the arm (subcutaneous) or into the vein (intravenous). These medications are generally reserved for patients who are not well-controlled with the typical inhalers and require something more powerful. These medications are also used when patients need to be on oral steroids frequently or even constantly to keep their asthma symptoms controlled. While oral steroids work, they can cause many serious side-effects which can even become permanent. Therefore, these biologics have been created to reduce or eliminate the need for oral steroids. Also, the biologics are designed to treat very specific types of asthmatics who have very specific types of inflammation in their lungs. Determining the type of inflammation usually involves a blood test. It is important be aware that biologics carry their own side-effect profile which needs to be reviewed by
the doctor with the patient. Last but not least, certain asthmatics can be treated with allergy shots. Just as with the biologics, asthmatics that would benefit from allergy shots must be selected as those who have allergies. While some asthmatics clearly report allergic triggers of their asthma, not all asthmatics are aware of the allergic component. This is often because the exposure to the allergen may be “hidden” or less obvious. For example, an allergy to cats has been shown in the literature to be highly linked to having asthmatic symptoms. However, people often do not realize that a cat does not need to be present for a person to have an exposure to cat dander. This is because cat dander sticks to the clothing of people who have cats at home, and are released into the air wherever they go. So cat dander can be encountered in any social setting, including at school, at work, at parties, on airplanes, or at any other social gathering. Therefore if an asthmatic is found to have allergies by allergy testing (can be by skin or blood), then allergy shots may improve their asthma symptoms. In the best-case scenario, allergy shots can sometimes even eliminate the need for mediations altogether. Allergy shots will be discussed in more detail on its own in a future column. a vice alcaldesa de la ciudad de Doral, Christi Fraga, anunció que ella ha estado trabajando con Codina Partners y con el Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas del Condado de Miami-Dade, en un esfuerzo para traer una biblioteca innovadora para al área de Downtown Doral. “Creo que una biblioteca en el centro de la ciudad de Doral, no sólo promoverá la naturaleza cívica de la zona, sino que también servirá para proporcionar un sitio donde nuestros residentes accederán a la información literaria, cultural y educativa más actualizada en formatos tanto impresos como digitales, y donde también utilizaran espacios para encuentros y estudio,” dijo la vice alcaldesa Fraga.
