olphin Mall is one of the most popular shopping centers in Miami, due to the fact that it houses more than 250 outlet stores, together with restaurants and entertainment centers, and this is the reason for which now that the Holiday activities are starting, it is necessary to reinforce the safety measures around it. It is for this reason that the Sweetwater Police Department is increasing its presence in this shopping mall and in the areas around it, at the same time that they are creating preventive operations that allow them to control the security in the area. It is important to mention
that Dolphin Mall belongs to the City of Sweetwater. Placido Diaz, General Director for the Sweetwater Police Department, announced that the department is allocating more uniformed and under-covered police officers and they are working together with the security service of Dolphin Mall. “Let’s remember that this is one of the most congested destinations in this season,” he states. Dolphin Mall is the second largest shopping mall in Miami Dade, with a total commercial area of one million four hundred square feet. It receives more than thirtysix million people a year, which makes it evident that keeping it safe is a challenge that the Sweetwater Police Department has. According to the website: https://backgroundchecks. org, the safest city in Florida is Sweetwater due to its low rate in violent crimes. They are well below the national average; this is mainly due to the fact that they have a very high proportion of employees and police officers compared to the number of residents. “Every day that goes by we make our best effort to keep this first place, therefore the holiday season is a big
challenge for our officers. We not only reinforce our job, we also try to create conscience in the people about the importance to be careful and care for one-self as the first step,” stated Diaz. The Director of the Sweetwater Police Department highlights the importance of actions so simple as not leaving visible objects inside the vehicle, to properly close the cars and in the case that you notice something or someone suspicious or a person that does not belong or shows an attitude out of the ordinary, to report it to the closest security officer. When an emergency situation arises in a congested area, Diaz recommends walking away of the area immediately. “There are people that act recklessly and instead of leaving the area they want to know what is going on and stay, and this is a mistake. The most important thing to do is to walk away from danger, search the assistance of a police officer and follow his instructions.” Diaz emphasized that this increase in security around Dolphin Mall is also deployed around Sweetwater, because around Christmas the number of visitors also

This operative will remain in effect until January 2020 because after the holidays the season of “returns” is equally congested, commercially speaking. If you want to contact the Sweetwater Police Department you can call them at 305552-9900, visit them through their webpage at: https://www.cityofsweetwater.fl.gov/ police.htm or follow them in social media.
Miami International Mall is the largest shopping mall in the City of Doral with a total area of one million square feet. Among the anchor and prestigious stores it houses, there are Macy’s, JC Penney and Kohl’s. It also houses a very important number of stores and restaurants that draw in average some twelve million visitors per year. It is logical that during the holiday season, this shopping mall also increases the number of visitors that it brings. For this reason, the Doral Police Department also increases its security actions. “We increase the surveillance, both in the number of uniformed officers, under-cover agents, and in police cars,” states Rey Valdes, Public Information Officer for this institution. “Doral is a very hectic city during the Christmas season, now we not only have the International Mall but also City Place and Downtown Doral, and we also receive a lot of visitors that come from abroad to visit their families and spend the time with them during this season,” explains Valdes. Because of this, the Doral police officers not only reinforce the security in commercial and residential areas, but they also instruct the community about the preventative actions that are necessary at all times. They regularly visit different neighborhood HOAs and Condos around our city and they have campaigns through social media. When asked about what to do during an emergency in a busy area such as a commercial space, Valdes was very clear when he stated that the most important thing is to run and get away from danger. “If you cannot escape, hide and as a last resort defend yourself, but it is always vital to run away and search for police help.” If you want to get in touch with the Doral Police Department you can call 305.593.6699 or visit their website: https://www.cityofdoral.com/police/ and follow them via social media.

mong the activities that the City of Doral has programmed for the Holiday season, is the traditional delivery of turkeys. Valdes stated that this year the city will distribute a total of 500 turkeys, 200 of which are being donated by the City of Doral and 300 by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, represented by Councilman Talbert Cypress. “In charge of the coordination of this distribution is Lieutenant Daniel Muñecas, who has been very efficient controlling all the operative part of this distribution of turkeys to the religious organizations and schools in Doral. These organizations are the ones in charge of identifying those families that are the neediest from our community, to be the ones chosen to receive a turkey and canned food that will help with the garnishes.” The delivery of the turkeys to religious institutions and churches will take place at the Doral Police Community Center on November 21st, 2019; at the schools, the turkeys will be delivered by the police officers as part of their community service with the assistance of the local stores that are assisting with the transportation service.

Give thanks on Thanksgiving
ORGAN DONATION: An Act of Generosity That Transforms lives EDDA PUJADAS @epujadas
Noviembre/November 10, 2019
For those who expect an organ transplant, their life clings to hope and those who live today after receiving an organ donation, thank the one who had this act of extraordinary kindness with them
12
“
Organ donation is an act of extraordinary human generosity.” With this phrase the surgeon physician Nicolás Brozzi, who is part of the team of the Transplant Institute of the Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami, summarizes the importance of living after life. And it is at this time that we celebrate Thanksgiving, nothing more noble than reflecting on organ transplantation, seen from both perspectives: from the possibility that each of us has to bring someone more to life and from the gratitude of those who were recipients of an organ that allowed them to overcome their diseases and get their lives back. Dr. Brozzi has not only been conducting organ transplants for more than 10 years, he is also an active promoter of the importance of organ donation. To promote these, he relies in the statistics of the Institute of Resource Management and Health Services of the Unites States that indicate that there are more than 113,000 people in the national transplant waiting list. Of the people who are on the waiting list, two in three are over 50 years old, about 2,000 are under 18 years of age and more than 59% belong to ethnic minorities. These figures also indicate that every ten minutes a name is added to the national transplant waiting list, approximately 22 people die every day waiting for a transplant in the United States. Human generosity has also provided good news because on average, every day there are 95 transplants being performed in our country. 2018 has been the year when the largest number of organ transplants has been performed reaching a figure of 36,528 completed transplants. It should be noted that 2018 is the sixth consecutive year in which this figure is consistently on the rise. An organ donor can save eight lives, because he can donate up to eight organs: heart, two lungs, liver, pancreas, two kidneys and intestines, which is the best example of giving life after life. With regard to living organ donors, during 2018 there were 6,900 transplants from people that are still alive. The Transplant Institute of the Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami, where Dr. Brozzi does surgery, was recently classified as the second largest transplant center in the United States. Therefore, his experience in this hospital allows him to explain that the organ donation process is strictly governed by laws and is done under extreme medical supervision. “While we understand that there are religious convictions
that conflict with organ donation, it is important to stay away from prejudices and fears about transplants. No doctor will allow that one of his patients dies because he is an organ donor. Our mission always is to save lives.” For Dr. Brozzi, most people are sensitized to organ donation when they or someone in their family gets sick and needs an organ. “We must really reflect on this topic and understand that we are committed to helping and that there is no more valuable gift than the gift of life.” “Providing life expectancy to another person is so great that it helps the families to cope with the pain of grief and alleviate the pain of losing a loved one. Mitigating the suffering of others helps to heal our own sadness and makes us recipients of infinite gratitude.” Says Dr. Brozzi. The following three stories of gratefulness are an example of everything that an organ donation can achieve.
“MAMI, I WILL BE RIGHT BACK”
“Mommy, I’ll be right back.” This was the phrase that Idalio Rivero used to say to his mother every time he had to have surgery for liver problems, because, despite the multiple complications he had to suffer, he always maintained faith in God and the hope that he would still be alive. “Everything started nine years ago, when I was in Kentucky, I felt a pain in my groin and I noticed that a little cyst was starting to grow. The little cyst ended up being evidence that I had a cirrhotic liver in stage 4, that was not working anymore, not responding to any treatment and that I needed an urgent transplant”, Idalio tells us. Idalio, who was 29 years old at the time, entered a waiting list and his life depended on the call from the Jackson Memorial Hospital. He received the call six months later. “Even though they called me, they told me they had a liver that could work for me, but that

I was second in line and they needed to check if the liver was compatible with a seven-year-old girl who had priority on the list.” Idalio comments that these are moments of very hard reflections and decisions, and that even at the cost of his own life, he maintained hope that the girl could receive the organ. “Because God’s ways are wonderful, the little one was compatible with the liver and in less than 24 hours another liver was available for me.” Unfortunately, after 18 hours of surgery and several days of painful recovery, Idalio’s body rejected the liver, he had to be undergone surgery again and this time the doctors gave him only one week to live, so he went home. “Even so I did not lose faith, I remember that one day I was feeling so bad, that in my thoughts I said to God: I need you now.” “Within half an hour we received a new call from the Jackson Memorial Hospital saying that they had another liver for me. This time no doctor wanted to conduct the surgery because they all thought that I was going to die during the procedure, but Dr. Andreas Tzakis, to whom I will be eternally grateful, decided to go ahead with the surgery and he saved my life.” After a year of recovering and going from 40 to just four pills a day, today Idalio Rivero is a strong and healthy man, who in addition to thanking the person who donated the liver and their families, wants to transmit the message about the importance of organ donation. “It is a blessing that is in our hands, to be able to give someone else the opportunity to live.”
“IF YOU WANT TO RECEIVE, YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO GIVE”
Maylen Blardonis suffered from polycystic kidneys, a genetic disease inherited from her father’s genes, both her and her brother suffered from this condition. Her brother, even when he was also able to get an organ transplant, due to his health condition at that time, was unable to survive. Time is a determining factor in preserving the lives of these patients. In 2014, one of the cysts exploded causing irreversible damage to Maylen’s kidney, it was at that time that she was included in the transplant waiting list. “Being on a waiting list is very hard. It is a wait without schedule, no time, it wreaks havoc in your brain and your feelings and affects the whole family.” Originally, Maylen only needed a kidney transplant and fortunately she had a friend who had decided to donate one of her kidneys and was fully compatible with her. Unfortunately, her case got complicated and in addition to a kidney transplant she would also need a liver, for this reason the wait continued. When she started getting the calls from the Jackson Memorial Hospital about the possibility of organs, the news was not always good. “On one occasion, they told me I was second on the list, I went to the hospital, but the first person received the transplant and I had to keep waiting. This depressed me a lot.” In May 2015 she received a second call. This time she was the first in line in the list, but the donor’s relatives need time to think about the donation and they were not ready
to take that decision. After this new frustration, Maylen had little hope, but her friends’ prayers never ceased and only one day later, it was finally her time.” Eventually, Maylen received a liver and kidney at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Andreas Tzakis was the doctor performing the surgery. “After having received two organs, I want to thank those who were and are donors. Anyone may need to be included in a transplant list, because a medical condition or accident can change your life in a second. If we want to receive, we must also be willing to give.” “I believe that if anyone has doubts about becoming an organ donor, they can think of me. When we die, we cannot take our organs, however, another person can live because of them. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions and myths about organ donation that prevents potential donors from registering, while thousands of people die each year waiting for an organ that never arrives,” Maylen reflects.
“LIFE CONTINUES THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE”
A tumor on his liver almost ends the life of Julio Ferreira. Fortunately, a liver transplant, the kindness of the donor and his family, and the medical care allowed Julio to keep on thanking for the opportunity to live and tell us his story. After receiving localized chemotherapy and without any alternative avenues for improvement, a liver transplant became the only option to Julio’s cure, for this reason he entered the transplant waiting list, his health status was so grave Julio Ferreira that he was even the top priority in this list. The road was not easy, as the first transplant was not
successful, and Julio’s physical conditions worsened. “My body was very damaged, what made me suffer the most was not being able to share with my family, enjoy their company, play with them, etc. so the new wait was a stage of much suffering and hopelessness.”, says Julio. Julio and his family had to wait three long and difficult years for a compatible liver to appear, this was a liver of a 17-year-old. “Thank God, this donor saved my life and brought again happiness to our home. My daughter always says this has been the best gift she’s ever received.” Today, Julio is so grateful that he no longer remembers the suffering of those three years, he just keeps the joy of being alive. “God, the donor, his family and the doctors gave me the opportunity to be here.” Same as my donor, we all have the opportunity to save lives and allow our live to go through the lives of others.”
BE A DONOR
It is interesting to know that while 95% of U.S. adults are in favor of organ donation, only 58% are registered as a donor. While this figure is equivalent to more than half of our nation’s adult population, more needs to be done, as more people are added to the waiting list every day, and one day it could be us or our relatives in this list. There are two ways to register as an organ donor, the simplest is online, through the webpage: https://www. organdonor.gov/register.html. You can also do this in person at any of the Department of Transportation offices, where you get or renew your Driver’s license. Signing up takes only a few minutes and the only thing that you need is some identification information and your driver’s license or and identification showing your photo. The most important thing is that you understand that being on the organ donor’s state register is a personal decision and it means that one day you could save the lives of others as a donor and give the gift of life. When you sign up, most states allow you to choose which organs and tissues you want to donate, and you can update your profile at any time. Finally, it is very important that you tell your family and friends that you have registered as an organ donor so that, if necessary, they can support your wishes.

great is this!” Pause. Notice and absorb that feeling of true, genuine gratitude. Let it sink in. Soak it up. Savor your blessings in the moment they happen.
veryone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude every day. These steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in your life: • Notice good things, look for them, appreciate them. • Savor, absorb, and really pay attention to those good things. • Express your gratitude to yourself, write it down, or thank someone. NOTICE THE GOOD THINGS IN YOUR LIFE Start to notice and identify the things you are grateful for. Tune in to the small everyday details of your life and notice the good things you might sometimes take for granted. Try these ideas: • Each day, think of 3 things you are grateful for. Nature. People. Community. Shelter. Creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. It’s amazing what you notice when you focus on feeling grateful. • Start a gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it more likely that we will notice good things as they happen. • Practice gratitude rituals. Some people say grace

• Disfruta, asimila y realmente presta atención a esas cosas buenas. • Expresa tu gratitud para tu mismo, anótala o agradézcele a otra persona.

before a meal. Pausing in gratitude before eating doesn’t have to be religious. It’s a simple habit that helps us notice and appreciate the blessing of food on the table. Once you’re aware of the blessings of everyday life, the next step is to savor them.
EXPRESS GRATITUDE Expressing gratitude is more than courtesy, manners, or being polite. It’s about showing your heartfelt appreciation. When you thank someone, you’re also practicing the first two gratitude skills: you’ve noticed something good, and you’ve genuinely appreciated it. Try this: • Show your appreciation to someone who did something nice. • Express gratitude by doing a kindness. • Tell the people in your life how you feel, what they mean to you. True gratitude doesn’t leave you feeling like you owe other people something — after all, if you’ve done someone a favor, you probably don’t want the person to feel like you expect something back in return. It’s all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good.

Children are increasingly at risk of getting DIABETES BY: DIANA BELLO ARISTIZÁBAL
Factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and diet are increasing type 2 diabetes in children
Noviembre/November 10, 2019
N
22
ovember is National Diabetes Month, a time to fight against this disease. In this fight, which is justified by the alarming statistics of the American Diabetes Association, children are also included now, due to their increasing risk of getting diabetes type 2. According to the American Diabetes Association, 1.25 million Americans suffer from type 1 diabetes, and 40,000 more will be diagnosed this year. However, type 2 diabetes is growing alarmingly due to the high rates of obesity in the population. “Forty years ago, I used to see two cases annually of pediatric diabetes type 2. Now I see two per week, and it is believed that the main risk factor is obesity,” says Dr. Marco Danon, pediatric endocrinologist, who works in multiple hospitals in the area, including Baptist Hospital of Miami and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. According to the expert, 16 percent of children in the United States are obese, and all of them are at risk of developing diabetes, although only 2 to 3 percent annually become diabetics. A similar perception has Maria Gomez-Borgo, a certified diabetes educator and registered and licensed dietitian from Kendall Regional Medical Center for whom type 2 diabetes is the most common one in children. “Type 2 diabetes mellitus, which was once considered a rare condition in the pediatric population, now account for about 15% to 45% of all newly diagnosed cases of diabetes in children. Until 10 years ago, type 2 diabetes accounted for less than 3% of all cases of new-onset diabetes in adolescents,” says Gomez-Borgo. This means that currently, all eyes are focused on the prevention of type 2 diabetes, the only one that can be controlled through a healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity and a balanced diet. In this regard, it should be clarified that although the two types of diabetes imply high blood sugar, each one develops differently. Type 1 originates when there is a lack of insulin, while type 2 is suffered by those who develop resistance to insulin. On the other hand, type 1 diabetes has an important genetic component that can be activated in certain environmental conditions and can only be treated with insulin. Meanwhile, type 2 appears due to a lack of action in insulin that is present in the body but does not work properly because of excess weight.
“All Latinos have a genetic predisposition to develop type 2 diabetes because of the way our ancestors stored fat in their bodies, and we are currently the second world group with the highest incidence of diabetes,” warns GomezBorgo. However, this type of diabetes is only activated when certain environmental conditions come into place (poor diet combined with inactivity). This means that contrary to type 1, which is insulin-dependent, type 2 depends exclusively on the patient’s cooperation to lose weight. “Family needs to cooperate a lot to control obesity, but if the patient manages to lose weight with physical activity and proper nutrition, diabetes can disappear,” adds Dr. Danon.
DOCTOR VISIT, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT
In addition to obesity as a warning signal for type 2 diabetes, there are some symptoms that may indicate the presence of the disease in either type. These are mainly excessive thirst and increased urination frequency. “Children who have diabetes often wet their beds when they are already potty trained or get up from bed several times at night to pee,” says Dr. Danon. When these symptoms appear, it is recommended to visit a pediatrician who, according to weight and size charts, will determine if there is an excess of caloric intake and whether or not it is convenient to refer Marco Danon, MD the patient to a pediatric endocrinologist. The diagnosis will only be made after the patient is subjected to a test in which it will be verified if the blood sugar levels are normal or not. “Currently, parents of young children are very attentive to any showed symptoms and take them to the doctor in a timely
manner,” says Dr. Danon. However, complications in the adolescent population often occur, as well as late diagnosis, mainly because parents are less aware of symptoms or warning signs. Therefore, the recommendation is to monitor eating habits, physical activity patterns, and symptoms associated with diabetes in children of all ages. After a diabetes diagnosis is made, the next step is to set up a treatment that for type 1 consists of getting insulin several times a day according to what is eaten and measuring blood sugar levels. “Currently, we have insulin pumps that make the process easier and control insulin perfectly. Everything is done through interconnected systems that measure blood sugar and provide insulin. Patients no longer endure the “torturing” procedures of past decades,” explains Dr. Danon. For the reasons mentioned above, today management of type 1 diabetes is considered much simpler than that of type 2, since once parents and caregivers learn the basics, children can lead a normal life. “A child with this diagnosis can eat anything as long as insulin is adjusted to the amount of carbohydrates eaten. If the patient is not overweight, as it is the case with most, he or she can take carbohydrates in small portions, although this recommendation applies to everyone, ”says María Gomez-Borgo. With diabetes type 2, it is required more dedication from the family that must follow a low-carb diet and engage in a physical activity routine in order to help the patient reduce body weight. “To cope with this diagnosis, the family must do a joint effort and, unfortunately, in many cases, parents have two jobs and lack time to monitor their children’s food,” says Dr. Danon.

EDUCATION AND NUTRITION
Due to the fact that receiving a diagnosis of diabetes, regardless of the type, is not easy for any family, the success of the treatment, in many cases, depends on the level of education that parents have about the disease and the commitment to the food plan. “The educational component is very important because what works with one patient may fail with another, which is why my task as an educator is to make sure the individual needs of each patient are covered, ”explains Mónica Grimaldi, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Taking this in regard, it is advisable to look for the advice of an educator and a registered dietitian, who are prepared to teach families important aspects of the disease, such as the correct way to count calories or how to include diabetes within the family routine. “Diabetes requires families to be united in the sense that there is a greater chance of success when the whole family is involved. The first step towards that direction is to establish a schedule for the disease using tools, such as mobile notifications or alarms,” recommends the specialist. Maria Gomez-Borgo has a similar opinion regarding family involvement. She states that a child cannot be asked to follow a healthy diet when the rest of the family does not adhere to the regime. “Food requirements are for the whole family. The
problem with Latinos is that they take too many carbohydrates with each meal, just as they used to in their countries of origin. The difference is that here in the U.S., they don’t get physically active because they get carried away by the American way of life, ”explains the expert. And what are usually food requirements? According to Gomez-Borgo, it’s about taking small portions trying to make 90 percent of the diet healthy and the remaining 10 percent, “food for the soul.” “Feed your family as you would a 3-year-old child; include fruits, vegetables, protein and fat on your plate and carbohydrate portions the size of your clenched fist,” says Gomez-Borgo. But in addition to this, the key is also to eliminate some bad habits that can impact the weight of children. “If you only cut out sugary drinks, it is possible to lose 12 pounds a year,” she explains. And it is not necessary to follow a restrictive or frustrating diet for children but rather teach them self-control without banning any food. This means that it is valid to let them eat Halloween candies or birthday cakes as long as parents can monitor and distribute portions. “You can save the birthday cake for later and offer it at home little by little without telling them, “you can’t eat that” or “how many times have I told you that you
have diabetes?” Instead, the expert suggests following a more balanced approach in which children are taught to eat properly, including exercise as the most effective ingredient to fight diabetes.

he constant growing of Doral is bringing lots of retail, office buildings and entertainment, but above all, a young and beautiful community. Now, our city has one more reason to celebrate, and celebrate well, and the host of the party is Downtown Doral Charter Upper School. The past October 19th, in the school grounds, as part of the commemorations of the Hispanic Heritage Month was realized a fundraising food festival, open to the public that brought together businesses and restaurants to integrate with the community. DDCUS guests also elected during a contest The Best Empanada of Doral! Organized by the International Parents Association (IPO), the 1st DDCUS Hispanic Heritage Food Festival was designed as a trip around flavors of the world. Restaurants sponsors invited all guests to try their preparations in delicious portions. The restaurants sponsors are part of what Doral has the best. Start with starters, Waka Moli served a delicious fresh guacamole to visitors. Among the Latin restaurants, the exceptional food from Hecho a Mano, Metropol and Avotaco. As we adore European

cuisine, the Italians: Novecento, Divieto and Piola filled the place with wonderful flavors. With a touch of street food, the bowl prepared by Pincho was the happiness of children and healthy eaters. Finally, for a very good taste of the American Gourmet BBQ the smoked salmon of Chef Carlos were unforgettable. The event didn’t stopped there. It was served four different types of desserts to chose from. The Latin classic tres leches, from Tres Leches Factory; the vegan, delicious and always adorable mini cupcakes from Bunnie Cakes; the pure indulgence from Sloan’s warm cookies, and the refreshing and most creamy ice cream of the town from Brain Freeze. During the event, a competition that brought together Los Macheticos, Los Roques, Central Park and Bunnie Cakes voted for the best empanada of Doral. The winner based on the votes of 200 guests was Central Park! I suggest a visit to all these places to try it and make your own decision! Besides the awesome food, the event brought entertainment for children and several local businesses that support our community with extra-curricular activities for students and several types of services for
the whole family. Above all, the Saturday afternoon of October 19th was a milestone in Doral because it made a mark on our town and opening a window of opportunity for the whole community for the following years. Doral is a vibrant place that stands by itself. Our community is strong enough to create and keep our events interesting and attractive to several populations. We are very excited to the next year – due to the large success this year – bring more businesses to support our community and enjoy what Doral has of the best. A strong and united community.

Donating to Charities? DO IT RIGHT!
DONACIONES a organizaciones benéficas
Donation basics to ensure a tax deduction
Donating to charity not only helps others, it can reduce your tax bill — but only if the charity qualifies as a tax-exempt organization. CHECKING FOR QUALIFIED STATUS If you plan on itemizing your deductions on your tax return, make sure the organization you’re donating to is designated by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization in good standing. You can find a list qualified 501(c)(3) organizations on the IRS website. Remember, even last year’s qualified organizations could lose their non-profit status if they do not submit their annual tax filing! IS IT A GOOD CHARITY? Ensuring a tax-exempt status is not your only step. You should also conduct research on your charitable organization. There are many websites that evaluate organizations, how they spend their funds, and how efficient your donation is being used. So check out your charities on sites such as Charity Navigator, Charity Watch and BBB Wise Giving Alliance. GET YOUR DOCUMENTATION RIGHT Here are a few other key requirements if you want to deduct your charitable donations: • Keep good records. The tax law imposes strict recordkeeping requirements. Notably, for monetary gifts of $250 or more, you must obtain a written acknowledgment from the charity (with specifics) before you file your return. • Understand rules around quid pro contributions. If you receive a benefit in return for your donation (e.g., dinner at a fundraiser), your deduction is limited to the difference between the donation amount and the value of the benefit. Obtain substantiation from the charity. • Know the annual limit. Under the recent legislation, the annual deduction for monetary contributions is currently limited to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI), up from 50%. Stay below this threshold. • Follow property rules. Besides a 30%-of-AGI limit for gifts of appreciated property, other special rules may apply. For instance, you must ensure that the property is used to further the 501(c)(3) organization’s tax-exempt mission. If you donate property valued at more than $5,000, obtain an independent appraisal. You may be able to reduce your tax liability by boosting your donations late in the year and pushing your total itemized deductions amount over the standard deduction threshold ($12,000 single/$24,000 joint). For more information, Rosillo & Associates can assist you! Call at (305)477-5671, or visit www.RosilloCPA.com Rosillo & Associates is located in 7950 NW 53rd St., Suite 221, Doral FL 33166
UHealth-University of Miami Health System to Open MEDICAL CENTER in Downtown Doral
Noviembre/November 10, 2019
T
he University of Miami Health System plans to continue the expansion of its services throughout South Florida by building a medical center in Downtown Doral, the 250-acre mixed-use community developed by Codina Partners “This state-of-the-art facility will allow UHealth to bring world-class health care to the rapidly growing Doral community and will serve as a western hub for our distinguished regional network of ambulatory services,” said Edward Abraham, M.D., executive vice president for health affairs and CEO of UHealth. “We are committed to providing personalized care to the people living and working in Doral.” The 100,000-square-foot, four-story UHealth at Downtown Doral, near the intersection of NW 87th Avenue and 53rd Street, will be modeled after UHealth’s award-winning Lennar Foundation Medical Center on the University’s Coral Gables campus. It will provide the following services to the Doral community: • Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which recently received the prestigious National Cancer Institute designation – Oncology clinics, radiation therapy and infusion therapy • Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, ranked the Number One eye care center in the nation – Comprehensive outpatient ophthalmology services • Multispecialty clinics – Ear, nose and throat, cardiology, GI, orthopedics, urology, neurology, endocrinology, dermatology, primary care, and others • Ambulatory surgery center – UHealth surgeons will provide a range of outpatient surgical procedures in a suite of four operating rooms. • Imaging center – Patients will be able to receive MRI, CT, PET, digital radiography, ultrasound and mammography. “The rapid growth in Downtown Doral allows UHealth to bring exceptional health care to the community and the rest of South Florida,” said Stephen L. Demers, chief operating officer of UHealth and chief executive officer of University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, and UHealth Tower. Earlier this year UHealth announced that it will open a medical center at Solé Mia, the 184-acre mixed-use development in North Miami. “UHealth at Solé Mia will offer the communities of North Miami, Aventura and surrounding areas outstanding medical care from all the exceptional UHealth physicians and staff,” said Ben Riestra, UHealth’s chief ambulatory operations executive. “Both Solé Mia and Doral will deliver the highest level of personalized, compassionate care to our patients, as we do at The Lennar Foundation Medical Center.” UHealth at Downtown Doral is expected to serve an average of 200-300 patients a day and employ 75-100 staff at the facility daily. It is scheduled to open in the summer of 2022. Bob Orban with Savills Studley represented UHealth in the transaction and Tony Puente with Fairchild Partners represented the landlord, Downtown Doral. “At Downtown Doral, we’re committed to offering options for people at every stage of their life and for every need that could arise, including health needs,” said Ana Marie Codina Barlick, CEO of Codina Partners. “The addition of UHealth at Downtown Doral will provide our residents and workforce with innovative, specialized medical services right in their backyard, and will give locals and visitors seeking world-class care a more centrally located facility in Miami-Dade County.”
