efore adjourning his first zoning meeting as Mayor on this term, Juan Carlos Bermudez took a moment to remind that this January 28th,2017 marked “fourteen years since this community voted overwhelmingly to incorporate. I hope it is remembered, as it has turned out to be beneficial to the city of Doral“. Eighty-five percent of residents voted in 2003 in favor of incorporation. Certainly the city has gone a long way since then. Being a teenager, the City is going through growing pains; its increasing population impacts traffic, schools and services, but on the other hand, its booming development of real state attracts new businesses that call this city home. The recent election season in Doral, although lengthy and nasty at times, was an exercise on involvement and citizenship. It showed that new and old residents have what it takes, to participate and make amends if needed, to follow the vision activists that achieved incorporation fourteen years ago had for this community. When incorporation movement started, Doral residents used to pay high taxes to the County but received services that were subpar. There was only the golf club; there were no parks, only one public school, low police presence and few open roads. Many of today’s residential spaces were occupied by cows and horses. The community has come a long way since then. Visionaries as Mr. Morgan Levy, Jesse Jones, Rolando Oses, Odel Torres, Pepe Cancio, Linda Scott, along with J.C. Bermudez, Pete Cabrera, Robert Van Name, Mike Di Pietro, Sandra Ruiz, Alberto Ruiz, Oscar Puig-Corvé and several others joined efforts through their organizations, West Dade Federation of Homeowners Association and One Doral, to guide this community through the incorporation process and set the foundations for success. As it happens with every teenager, Doral requires a delicate balance between nurturing and freedom to fully develop in a successful way. That is why it is important that residents remember the ideas that prompted the need for incorporation, and embrace their responsibility on supporting the City leaders on their administration. Old and new residents as well owe to those visionaries to have a constant civic participation to preserve values and prosperity. By taking an active role on the community it will make Doral the great place to “live, learn, work and play” that it was once envisioned.

ntes de terminar su primera reunión de Zonificación en este periodo, J.C. Bermúdez tomo un momento para recordar que este 28 de enero se cumplieron “catorce años desde que esta comunidad votó masivamente en favor de la incorporación. Espero que sea recordado porque ha sido beneficioso para la comunidad de Doral.” Un 85% de los residentes votó en 2003 a favor de la creación de una municipalidad independiente. Realmente la ciudad ha cambiado mucho desde entonces. Como todo adolescente, Doral está pasando dolores de crecimiento; el aumento de la población incrementa el tráfico e impacta escuelas y servicios. Pero por otra parte el desarrollo de infraestructura atrae nuevos negocios a establecerse en la ciudad. La reciente campaña electoral, aun cuando fue larga y desagradable en muchos aspectos, fue un ejercicio de participación y ciudadanía. Demostró que tanto los nuevos como viejos residentes tienen lo que hace falta para participar, decidir y corregir el rumbo para seguir la visión que los activistas que lograron la incorporación tenían hace 14 años para la comunidad. Cuando comenzó el movimiento, los residentes de Doral pagaban altos impuestos al condado pero no recibían servicios acordes. Solo existían el club de golf y una sola escuela; no había parques, pocas calles y baja presencia policial. Muchos de los espacios actualmente residenciales estaban ocupados por vacas y caballos. Definitivamente la comunidad ha cambiado mucho desde entonces. Visionarios como Morgan Levy, Jesse Jones, Rolando Oses, Odel Torres, Pepe Cancio, Linda Scott, así como J.C. Bermudez, Pete Cabrera, Robert Van Name, Mike Di Pietro, Sandra Ruiz, Alberto Ruiz, Oscar Puig-Corvé y muchos otros, aunaron esfuerzos a través de sus organizaciones West Dade Federation of Homeowners Association y One Doral, para guiar a la comunidad en el proceso de incorporación y establecer las bases del éxito. Igual que cualquier adolescente, Doral requiere un delicado balance entre disciplina y libertad para desarrollarse de manera exitosa. Por ello es importante que los residentes recuerden siempre las ideas que propiciaron la incorporación, y asuman su responsabilidad ciudadana de apoyar, monitorear y trabajar con sus líderes comunitarios en la operación de la ciudad. Nuevos y viejos residentes le deben a esos visionarios una constante participación cívica para preservar los valores y la prosperidad. Tomando un rol activo en la comunidad, Doral seguirá siendo el lugar para “vivir, aprender, trabajar y jugar” que fue imaginado hace 14 años.

Dolphin Station Park and Ride Benefits Doral Commuters MDX Breaks Ground on Transit Terminal that will Bring Express Bus Service to the Dolphin Expressway

W

est Dade commuters can look forward to express bus service on the Dolphin Expressway (State Road 836) thanks to a new park-and-ride facility that just broke ground alongside the expressway on Northwest 12th Street. On Monday, January 23, MDX held a groundbreaking event to formally mark the start of construction of the Dolphin Station Park and Ride Transit Terminal Facility, will serve as a transit hub for a number of bus routes including a planned express route and will feature 12 bus bays, nearly 800 parking spaces, air conditioned passenger waiting areas and retail space. The Dolphin Station will serve as a transit hub providing an alternative for potential transit riders from Doral, Sweetwater, and other residential areas of West Dade to major employment areas such as Miami International Airport, the Health District, Downtown and Brickell using the SR 836 Express Bus Service. “As the commissioner of the district, the Dolphin Station Park and Ride Transit Facility was a top priority for me, and I am excited to see it come to fruition,” said County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, who sponsored the legislation that authorized the agreement with MDX and FDOT. “This vital project will serve as a viable alternative to west Miami-Dade commuters, especially those in District 12.” “The Dolphin Station Park and Ride will serve as a major transit hub for West Dade commuters who will be able to get to work more quickly using a convenient express bus route, and could also serve as a transit station for future East-West Corridor commuter rail service utilizing the CSX rail line,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez participated in the MDX groundbreaking event. “This is a very important project for Doral,” declared Mayor Bermudez, “it will give our residents the opportunity to come here and take public transit. That can reduce traffic,

not only in western Miami-Dade but in our city as well.” “This project aligns with the Commuting Beyond Cars part of our Traffic Solution Triangle. We will be examining how to extend our trolley route over the coming year to take advantage of this project,” explained Dr. Joan Shen, Doral’s Traffic Advisor. El pasado lunes 23 de enero, la Autoridad de Autopistas de Miami-Dade (MDX) celebró un evento innovador para marcar formalmente el inicio de la construcción del Terminal Dolphin Station Park and Ride, que servirá como un centro de tránsito para una serie de rutas de autobús incluyendo una ruta expresa planificada y contará con 12 estacionamientos para autobuses, cerca de 800 plazas de estacionamiento, áreas de espera para pasajeros con aire acondicionado y espacio para comercios. MDX is the implementing agency for both the County and the State by delivering the project. “What we want to do for Miami-Dade County is give everybody options. An option to get out of your car and this is one of the solutions,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “But if drivers do choose to stay in their cars, we are working hard with our partners to improve major intersections. Improving transit countywide is a priority for myself and the commission.” “MDX was created in part with the purpose of reinvesting its revenue to improve Miami-Dade County’s transportation challenges. And I’ll be the first to admit that fixing the community’s congestion issues is not a task that can be done alone. While I’m very proud of the work MDX is doing, collaborating with other transportation agencies is the only way to serve the millions of commuters in Miami-Dade,” said MDX Chairman Louis Martinez. Once construction of Dolphin Station is completed in December of 2017, the facility will be operated and maintained by Miami-Dade County.

he City of Doral Council approved unanimously the site plan for a new Emergency Healthcare facility that will be located on 41st street and 109th Avenue. It will be operated by Kendall Medical Centers, providing quick access to 24/7 emergency care for the residents on the west side of the Doral. According to the application submitted to the City, the free standing emergency department approved will operate as “an outpatient medical office/clinic that is staffed (trained medical staff which include an emergency medicine physician) and capable of treating most illnesses and injuries, including acute and life threating conditions like chest pain, stroke, breathing difficulties, or severe bleeding.” Although similar to an urgent care center, the Emergency department will have more facilities to tend to more acute and severe cases and will be open 24/7. However, it “will not be equipped with beds for overnight stays or on-going treatment. Once the patient is stabilized he/she is either released or taken to a hospital for further care.” First responders will not bring patients to this center in case of severe injuries, but instead will take them to the nearest trauma center at the hospital, therefore the majority of the patients “coming to the facility will arrive by other modes of transportation than an ambulance” and the project for the center includes landscaping and a lake in the north that will separate the property from the neighboring residences, preventing any nuisances. The estimate is that between 25 and 50 patients will benefit daily of this facility, and as if in a hospital, they will be cared for regardless of their payment ability. The center will include pediatric and women services as well. A traffic impact study was included in the application. It concluded that “the project is expected to generate 13 net new trips during the weekday A.M. peak hour and 12 net new trips during the weekday P.M. peak hour” and “there is available capacity to accommodate the project traffic at adopted level of service” for the City of Doral standards.

Approval of the project was recommended on a memo to the Council by the City of Doral Planning and Zoning Department, which considered it is “consistent with the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code”, the “surrounding development patterns (residential and commercial uses along Doral Boulevard), and will have a positive economic impact in the local economy through the creation of new medical jobs and purchases of goods and services from local businesses.”

Será operado por Kendall Medical Centers, permitiendo el acceso a atención de emergencia 24/7 para los residentes del oeste de Doral. De acuerdo a la aplicación sometida a aprobación por la Ciudad, este centro de emergencia operará como “una facilidad independiente ambulatoria, con personal médico y de oficina, incluyendo médicos especialistas en atención de emergencia, capaces de tratar la mayoría de las enfermedades y heridas, incluyendo condiciones agudas y riesgosas tales como dolor en el pecho, derrames cerebrales, dificultades respiratorias o sangramientos severos.” Aun cuando es similar a un centro de urgencias, el departamento de Emergencia tendrá más facilidades para atender casos críticos y estará abierto permanentemente, 24/7/365. Sin embargo, “no estará equipado con camas o habitaciones para hospitalización o tratamiento permanente. En este centro una vez que el paciente ha sido estabilizado es dado de alta o trasladado a un hospital para cuidados adicionales.” El personal de atención de emergencia no traerá a este centro heridas severas por accidente. En esos casos serán llevados al Centro de Atención de Emergencia del hospital más cercano. Es por ello que los pacientes de la nueva facilidad a ser construida “en muy pocos casos llegarán en ambulancia, sino más bien en otros medios de transporte.” Sin embargo, el plan incluye un espacio amplio de jardín y un lago en el área norte del proyecto, para separar la propiedad de las residencias cercanas, para evitar cualquier tipo de molestia a los vecinos. Estiman que entre 25 y 50 pacientes se beneficiaran diariamente de esta facilidad. Igualmente, todo paciente será atendido, sin importar su capacidad de pago. El centro contará con atención pediátrica y para emergencias femeninas también. En la aplicación a la Ciudad fue incluido un estudio de impacto de tráfico. Dicho estudio concluyó que “este proyecto generará 13 viajes netos diarios durante la semana laboral en las horas pico matutinas, y 12 en la horas pico vespertinas. De acuerdo a los estándares de servicio adoptados en la Ciudad de Doral hay capacidad para incluir el tráfico generado por este proyecto.” En memorándum dirigido a los miembros del Concejo de Doral, el Departamento de Planificacion y Zonificacion recomendó la aprobacion del proyecto, por considerarlo “consistente con el Plan Ampliado de la Ciudad y el Código de Desarrollo de Terrenos”, al igual que con la zonificación de las áreas aledañas (uso residencial y comercial en Doral Boulevard). El memo indica también que este centro tendrá un impacto positivo en la economía local, a través de la creación de nuevos empleos en el área de salud y la compra de bienes y servicios a negocios locales. El creciente número de familias en la Ciudad de Doral se beneficiará grandemente al tener acceso cercano a una facilidad de estas características. Los residentes y dueños de negocios que hablaron durante la porción de comentarios públicos durante la audiencia, fueron entusiastas en su apoyo a la aprobación del proyecto por la

Residents and business owners who spoke during public comments at the zoning hearing expressed their support to the approval of this project and praised the selection of the location, requesting the council to vote in favor, as suggested by the staff. Mr. Peter Jude, Director of Marketing and Community Relations Kendall Regional Medical Center, expressed his satisfaction for the approval of the project: “Kendall Regional Medical Center is one-step closer to developing a Free Standing Emergency Department in Doral. This week on Wednesday night KRMC received unanimous approval of the site plan by the City of Doral Council. We had the opportunity to share how this model is a great means to extend our quality care out in the communities we serve. Both members of the Council as well as residents expressed their positive feelings towards the plan.”

DORAL 4200 FUTURE LAND USE AMENDMENT DEFERRED

The First Reading for Ordinance 2017-02 that would amend the zoning on the future land use map for the property located on 41st street, between 107th and 109th avenue was deferred until March 22nd zoning meeting, in order to provide residents with more chances to interact with the developer on community workshops, as stablished on Ordinance 2016-16. Joe Jimenez, from Codina, presented the project to the Council. The zone change requested is from General Use (GU) to Planned Unit Development (PUD), and would allow them to build on the 10 acre site a rental community, composed of 250 residential units and an estimate of 436 parking spaces. Jimenez expressed the disposition and interest of the developer to receiving community input. However he emphasized the need for residents to actually show up to the workshops as the one offered on January 24th, where only 12 residents attended. The City of Doral will announce the date, time and location of the zoning workshops regarding this project that will take place before the zoning meeting on March 22nd.

Tanto los miembros del Concejo como los residentes se expresaron muy positivamente sobre este proyecto.”

DIFERIDA DISCUSIÓN SOBRE ENMIENDA PARA CAMBIO DE USO DEL TERRENO Y PROYECTO DORAL 4200

Fue diferida hasta el 22 de Marzo la Primera Discusión de la Ordenanza 2017-02, que busca cambiar la zonificación en el mapa de uso futuro para la propiedad ubicada en la 41 calle, entre las avenidas 107 y 109. De esa manera los residentes tendrán más oportunidades de interactuar con el desarrollador en las reuniones de revisión del Proyecto que se realizarán, tal como se establece en la Ordenanza 2016-16. Joe Jiménez, representante de Codina, presentó el Proyecto a los miembros del Concejo. El cambio de zonificación solicitado es de GU (Uso General) a PUD (Desarrollo planificado de unidades). Una vez aprobado permitirá desarrollar en 10 acres de terreo una comunidad residencial de renta, compuesta por 250 unidades habitacionales y un estimado de 436 puestos de estacionamiento. Jiménez expresó la disposición e interés de la compañía desarrolladora en recibir los comentarios de la comunidad. Sin embargo, fue enfático en solicitar que los residentes realmente asistan a las reuniones de revisión del proyecto, pues en la primera que ofrecieron apenas 12 personas hicieron acto de presencia. La Ciudad de Doral anunciará la fecha, hora y lugar de estas reuniones con la suficiente antelación. Todas tendrán lugar antes de la reunión de zonificación del 22 de Marzo.

How do modern couples interact?

S

trauss and Howe defined the term “Millennials” as the children born in 1982, who became the High School class of 2000. Sociologists and psychologists expanded the term to the “demographic cohort of people born starting in the early 1980s to the mid1990s”. Currently in their 30s and mid-20s, they are taking longer to marry and have children, have high life and career ambitions, and look forward to making an impact and contribution to mankind with their work, participating in volunteerism and activism. They have had a strong influence of technology in their lives, as they were the users of innovations created by Baby Boomers and Generation Xs. Cultural anthropologist Simon Sirek says that the millennial generation needs to learn patience, and the constant use of technology has caused that many did not develop the skills for social interactions that help create deep meaning relationships. It has an impact on the way these individuals fall and stay in love and form a family of their own.

trauss y Howe definieron como “Millennials” a los niños nacidos en 1982, quienes serían la clase de secundaria del año 2000. Sociólogos y psicólogos expandieron el término para identificar a todas las personas nacidas entre principios de los ’80 y mediados de los ’90. Estas personas, quienes ahora tienen están entre los 25 y los 35 años, tardan más en casarse y tener hijos, tienen muchas ambiciones para su vida y su carrera, y desean contribuir al progreso de la humanidad; en general tienen sensibilidad social y participan en actividades voluntarias. Tienen también una gran influencia de la tecnología en sus vidas, pues fueron los usuarios de las innovaciones creadas por los Baby Boomers y los Generation Xs. El antropólogo Simon Sirek dice que los Millennials necesitan aprender a tener paciencia, y que el uso de la tecnología ha causado que muchos no hayan desarrollado las habilidades de interacción social que ayudan a la creación de relaciones profundas y duraderas. Esto impacta directamente el modo en que estos individuos se enamoran y forman una familia.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools ABC Committee offers update on expected changes for Doral Schools

A

ttendance Boundary Committee Community Meetings were held in Doral recently to discuss the proposed changes to boundaries which in turn determine which Miami-Dade public school your child will attend. In Doral, the schools are Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, John I. Smith K-8 Center, Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center (DRE), and Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School. Boundary changes are needed because of two new K-8 Centers that are planned for the city as well as a new High School. One K-8 Center is expected to open in August 2017 near NW 90th Street and NW 114th Avenue. A second K-8 Center is scheduled to open in August 2018 near NW 77th Street and NW 102nd Avenue. In addition, John I. Smith’s middle school building on NW 112th Avenue will be converted to be a second High School for the City of Doral. The first meeting was held the evening of January 23, 2017 at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral High School. It was announced that no boundary changes would be made to Ronald W. Reagan/Doral High School nor Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center students for the 2017-2018 school year. The expected new High School at the existing John I. Smith middle school building would open for the new

school year of 2019-2020 with only 9th and 10th graders attending at first. New feeder patterns will be established before the new High School opens. The second meeting was held the evening of February 1, 2017 at DRE. It was announced that the new K-8 Center at NW 90th Street and NW 114th Avenue, currently referred to as New State School T-1, will open for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade in August 2017. Parents who currently reside within the boundaries for DRE and John I. Smith K-8 Center will have the option of sending their children to T-1 during the 2017-2018 and the 2018-2019 school year. Permanent boundaries for T-1 will go into effect for the 2019-2020 school year. It is expected that some 378 students at DRE and John I. Smith will have the option to attend the new T-1 school. No permanent boundaries will be established for the next two years because the second K-8 Center located near NW 77th Street and NW 102nd Avenue, referred to as “Grand Bay”, will not open until August 2019. At that time, both students at DRE as well as John I. Smith K-8 will have boundary changes as now they are two new K-8 schools ready to accept students. If parents choose

to send their students to T-1 during the first two optional years, they can request to stay at T-1 if they are affected by boundary changes that assign them to DRE or John I. Smith. In addition, if boundary changes assign your student to T-1, but you would prefer to keep them at DRE or John I. Smith because your child has older siblings there, you can also request to not move to T-1. Plans for the new T-1 school include language programs, the Cambridge program, and an international theme. Although the school will open with only PreK – 2nd grade, a grade will be added each year to the school. The second new K-8 center will also implement a similar start in which it will open with limited grades and will add each year. Students who are assigned to T-1 will be in the feeder pattern for Ronald W. Reagan/Doral High School. Among those present at these meetings were Dr. Albert Payne, Region Superintendent for the Central Region; Mr. Michael A. Lewis, ABC Region Administrative Director; School Board Member Susie Castillo; as well as various Doral school principals. All were present to speak to parents and answer their many questions. All of them will continue to be available to address any questions or concerns about upcoming changes.

ecientemente tuvieron lugar dos reuniones del Comité de Límites de Asistencia a las escuelas (Comite ABC), para discutir acerca de los posibles cambios en los límites que determinan a que escuela pública de Miami-Dade asistirán los niños en Doral. En Doral, estas escuelas son Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 (EBT), John I. Smith K-8 (JIS), Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 (DRE) y Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High (RRDSH). Estos cambios son necesarios puesto que hay planes para dos nuevas escuelas K-8 y una nueva secundaria. Está proyectado que una nueva escuela K-8, abra sus puertas para el ciclo que comienza en Agosto de 2017, cerca de la calle NW 90 y la avenida NW 114. Una segunda escuela de este tipo está proyectada para abrir en Agosto de 2018 cerca de la calle NW 77 y la avenida NW 102. Adicionalmente, el edificio que actualmente alberga a la escuela media de John I. Smith en la calle NW 112 será convertido en su totalidad en una segunda escuela secundaria (HS) para la ciudad de Doral. La primera de estas reuniones tuvo lugar durante el pasado 23 de Enero, en Ronald W. Reagan Doral Senior High. Ahí se anunció que por el momento no habrá ningún cambio en los límites para esta escuela ni para Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 para el año escolar 2017-2018 ni para el 2018-2019. La escuela superior (HS) que se espera

convertir a partir del edificio medio de John I. Smith está proyectada abrir para el año escolar 2019-2020 y solamente los niños en los grados 9o. y 10o. asistirán ahí. La segunda reunión tuvo lugar el 1o. de Febrero en las instalaciones de DRE. Ahí se anunció que la nueva escuela elemental y media localizada en la calle NW 90 y la avenida NW 114, y que actualmente se conoce como “nueva escuela T-1”, abrirá para estudiantes en los grados de PreKinder y hasta 2º grado en Agosto de 2017. Los padres que actualmente residen dentro de los límites para DRE y JIS tendrán la opción de enviar a sus hijos a la escuela T-1 durante el ciclo escolar 2017-2018 y el 2018-2019. Los límites permanentes para la escuela T-1 entrarán en efecto para el año 2019-2020. Se espera que cerca de 378 estudiantes de DRE y JIS tendrán la opción de asistir a la nueva escuela T-1. Por los próximos dos años no se establecerán limites permanentes puesto que el segundo centro K-8 localizado cerca de la calle NW 77 y la avenida NW 102, referido como “Grand Bay”, no abrirá hasta Agosto de 2019. En ese momento los estudiantes de DRE y de JIS tendrán cambios en los límites escolares, puesto que para ese entonces habrá dos escuelas nuevas que podrán aceptar estudiantes. Si los padres eligen enviar a sus hijos a la escuela T-1 durante los dos años opcionales, ellos

podrán entonces elegir permanecer en dicha escuela en caso de verse afectados por los nuevos límites escolares asignados a DRE o JIS. Igualmente, si los cambios en los límites escolares asignan a su hijo a la escuela T-1, pero los padres prefieren permanecer en DRE o JIS debido a que su hijo tiene hermanos mayores en esa escuela, entonces podrán solicitar no ser transferidos a la escuela T-1. Los planes para la escuela T-1 incluyen un programa de lenguaje, el programa Cambridge y un tema internacional. Aún cuando la escuela abrirá solamente con los grados Pre-Kinder al 2º grado, cada año se añadirá un nuevo grado escolar. El segundo centro escolar K-8, implementará un inicio similar que abrirá con un número limitado de grados escolares y uno nuevo se añadirá cada año. Entre los directivos presentes durante estas reuniones estuvieron el Dr. Albert Payne, Superintendente para la Región Central, el Sr. Michael A. Allergies: Prevention is the Best Medicine Dr. María Barcena

B

efore discussing allergies, we should first understand what the word “allergy” means. Allergy is basically a mistake of the immune system, where the body is trying to defend itself against a harmless substance. So, instead of the body normally ignoring a cat dander particle, an immune response is set up to fight it off as if it were an infectious organism. In this example, chronic exposure to cat dander leads to a cold-type syndrome that never seems to go away. When allergens are airborne and are inhaled, they lead to syndromes such as allergic rhinitis (sneezing, nasal congestion, etc.) or asthma. When allergens are ingested, they lead to the symptoms of food allergy and drug allergy. So why are allergies becoming more common? One theory is that the clean living in our modern society, leading to the lesser exposure to invading organisms, contributes to this “allergic” mistake of the immune system. Also, the overuse of antibiotics in children probably leads to the same result. In addition, pollution, by unknown mechanisms, seems to lead to allergy. Lastly, as far as food allergies go, it appears that delaying infant feeding of certain “allergenic” foods leads to more allergies.

SCIENCE HAS PROVIDED A FEW HINTS ON THE “PRIMARY” PREVENTION OF ALLERGY – THAT IS, NOT BECOMING ALLERGIC IN THE FIRST PLACE.

First, having more children at home, and consequently having them share more viral infections, leads to fewer of the children having respiratory allergies. Also, likely from exposure to animal waste, being born on a farm or being exposed to pets at birth appears to lead to less allergies (note that once you are allergic to an animal, the animal is best removed). Also, fresh air, exercise, sunlight (Vitamin D) and healthy fats in the diet appear to lead to less allergies. Here you can see why children in modern industrialized societies are more allergic. Exposure to dust mites in infancy, however, seems to lead to more respiratory allergy. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that live indoors, especially in moist and warm environments. Since our children spend more time indoors than they have in the past, this is another reason allergies are on the rise. Studies have shown that less dust mite exposure in infancy leads to less asthma, for instance. As to the primary prevention of food allergies, studies over the last few years have told a fascinating story. About 20 years ago, allergy researchers noted an

increase in food allergy, especially to milk, eggs, and peanuts. A theory developed that by delaying infant exposure to these foods until the “immune system matured,” we could reverse the trend. As it turned out, the opposite occurred. Essentially, a food allergy epidemic came into existence. This is where the story gets interesting. Some very smart researchers noted that different countries and cultures had different rates of food allergy. Peanut allergy, for instance, seemed to be almost nonexistent in Israel compared to other Western countries. So, one group of scientists decided to compare the Israeli infant feeding habits to a genetically similar group of children in another country (Jewish children in Israel versus Jewish children in England). What they found was that Israeli children were being fed peanut-containing snacks starting at only a few months of age. Whereas, like the United States, English parents (following national guidelines) were not giving their children peanuts until about two years of age or later. So, they came up with the hypothesis that delayed feeding of peanuts was leading to the increase in allergy. As good scientists do, they decided to test their theory. They enlisted a group of parents who agreed to have their babies enter a study where some were given peanut -containing snacks at about four months of age, whereas the others were not given peanuts until they were five years old. They then followed these children for several years to see who developed peanut allergy. They studied only children with severe eczema or preexisting egg allergy, as they thought that this group was at the highest risk for peanut allergy. The results of this study were published in 2015 in the New England Journal of Medicine. They found that early peanut introduction led to a dramatic decrease of peanut allergy at five years of age - 2% in the early group, versus 14% in those with the delayed introduction of peanuts. A study following this by the same researchers found that the effect was long-lasting. As a result of this, US feeding guidelines for infants have recently changed. The new guidelines, issued by

the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in January 2017, recommend giving babies puréed food or finger food containing peanut protein before they are 6 months old, and even earlier if a child is prone to allergies and doctors say it is safe to do so. They caution to never give a baby whole peanuts or peanut bits, because they can be a choking hazard. So, new and future parents should be asking their pediatrician about when to start peanut-containing foods in infants. Studies are ongoing regarding other foods such as milk and egg, but no answers are available yet regarding the best strategy for these foods.

“SECONDARY PREVENTION,” OR WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE ALREADY ALLERGIC.

As far as food allergies are concerned, there is no secondary prevention besides strict avoidance of the food, as well as carrying an epinephrine self-injectable device for accidental ingestions. It should be noted that many children outgrow their food allergies, so food-allergic children should be followed by an allergy specialist to see if and when certain foods can be safely introduced. If one is allergic to airborne allergens, there are strategies to avoid exposure. Animal dander exposure can be lessened by rinsing the animal with water twice a week and with the use of HEPA air room filters. Obviously, if someone is allergic, the removal of the animal from the home is the best strategy. Dust mite exposure can be decreased by frequent washing of bedding, removal of carpeting, and by placing dust mite-proof encasements around pillows and mattresses. Also, weather permitting, allowing fresh air into the home decreases dust mite exposure. Mold growth in the home can be especially problematic for those with allergies, so removal of any water damaged materials in the house is important. As far as pollens, there is no particularly ideal way to avoid these allergens since being outside is so healthy otherwise. However, avoiding being outside on particularly windy days is a reasonable idea. Lastly, another prevention strategy for existing airborne allergies is allergen immunotherapy injections or allergy shots. This treatment has been around for many decades and is still the only effective method for actually decreasing the immune allergic response of an individual. Unlike medications that only treat the symptoms, allergy shots get to the core of the problem and alter the patient’s immune system to make them less allergic.

eguir capacitando en el fútbol a los jovencitos mayores de 14 años es el objetivo principal de los planes de expansión de la escuela de fútbol infantil Miami Caymans Soccer Academy, la cual forma parte de la institución deportiva “La Caimanera Soccer Fields”, ubicada en la ciudad de Doral. Así lo anunció su director general, Daniel Gil, quien explicó que, en la actualidad, Miami Caymans Soccer Academy entrena a niños entre 3 y 14 años de edad y su nueva meta es continuar trabajando con estos muchachos en las categorías sub 16, sub 18 y sub 20 respectivamente.

he Miami-Dade County Commission on Jan. 24 gave final approval to an ordinance sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz to help reunite pet owners with their lost dogs. Under the new legislation, residents who find a lost dog must notify the County’s Animal Services Department and have the dog scanned for a microchip within 72 hours to find out if it’s registered to an owner. If the dog has a registered owner, then the resident must contact the owner within 24 hours. Failure to comply could result in a fine. The ordinance also calls for the creation of a Countymaintained online Lost Dog Registry that would contain pictures and descriptions of the lost animals to facilitate reunification with their owners – whether the dog is being kept at the County’s animal shelter or at the home of the resident who found it. “A dog is like a member of the family to a lot of people, and this will help pet owners get reunited with their ‘best friend’ by defining the responsibility of those who find lost pets and providing a central database with information about animals that have been picked up by other residents or the County,” Commissioner Diaz said.

l 24 de enero, la Junta de Comisionados del Condado de MiamiDade dio su aprobación final a una ordenanza propuesta por el comisionado Jose “Pepe” Diaz para ayudar a que los dueños de mascotas puedan recuperar sus perros perdidos. Conforme a la nueva legislación, los residentes que encuentren un perro perdido tendrán que notificarlo al Departamento de Servicio para Animales del Condado y dentro de 72 horas deberán llevar al perro para que se le escanee en busca de un microchip a fin de determinar si está inscrito con un dueño específico. Si el perro está registrado a nombre de un dueño, entonces la persona que lo encuentre tiene 24 horas para contactar al dueño; de lo contrario, puede recibir una multa. La ordenanza también ordena la creación de un registro en internet de perros perdidos del cual se encargue el condado y que contenga fotos de los animales perdidos para facilitar que logren reunificarse con sus dueños, ya sea que el perro esté en el refugio para animales del condado o en la vivienda de la persona que lo encontró. “Un perro es un miembro de la familia para muchas personas, y esto ayudará a que los dueños de las mascotas puedan reunificarse con su ‘mejor amigo’ al definir la responsabilidad de aquellas personas que encuentran un animal perdido y ofrecer una base de datos central con información sobre los animales que otros residentes o el condado han encontrado”, dijo el comisionado Diaz.
