he Doral Police Department will implement its customary “Back to school operative” with the goal to guarantee the safety of children, teens, parents and school staff and to achieve an efficient traffic flow during the hours of drop off and pick up of the schools. Luis Martinez, officer from the Doral Police Department informed us this as he explained that this operative will start on the same day that school starts, on Monday, August 22nd, 2016 and it will cover all the schools in Doral, both public and charters, one police officer will be assigned to each one of them. “In general, all public schools have a police officer assigned to them, but we will assign one extra officer per school. Our intention is to reinforce the security in all the schools in Doral, including the new Charter school, Doral International Math & Science Academy, located at 6700 NW 104th Ave, in Doral,” explains officer Martinez. Officer Martinez indicated also that they will have police officers in the streets that have a heavier traffic during school times. “For example, we will have officers along NW 41 street in all intersections NW 107th Ave, NW 97th Ave, NW 87th Ave and NW 79 Ave. These officers will monitor the traffic and will coordinate the traffic flow in the direction that gets more congested.” The Doral Police Officers that will be assigned to the schools belonging to the School Unit and are highly trained in assisting children and the protection of school zones. The officers that will be assigned to the main streets in the city belong to the Motor Unit, they are specialized in traffic and have a much better mobility. “In general, the first two weeks of this operative are the heaviest, because there are new parents that do not know the system and those that are not new have to get back to the school routine. There are also many children that are changing grades and therefore they are changing schedules and/or schools and they have to get adapted to this. After these two weeks, everything tends to get back to normal,” states Martinez. Doral is the only city in Miami Dade County that

Officer Martinez places one police officer at the service of each school and does this with the clear intention to prevent accidents, guarantee the safety of the students and its parents, and to diminish traffic congestion. “We have been doing these school operatives since Doral was established and we have always strived to make them work so the back to school time is safer and simpler for everyone.”

ZERO TOLERANCE

“Zero Tolerance.” With this phrase, officer Martinez stated clearly that the Doral Police Department is completely determined to avoid the most common traffic violations during drop off and pick up at schools, as this is the only way to prevent accidents and achieve a more efficient traffic flow. “Even when our mission is to assist the parents, ease the traffic and try that everything flows in a more harmonic and calm way, we also have the obligation to make the transit rules prevail, given that these are

the ones that guarantee proper citizen’s behavior,” stated Officer Martinez. Martinez explains that the most common traffic violations during drop off and pick up in schools are: speeding in school zones at the time when the speed limit is 15 miles, drop off students in areas not assigned for this purpose and texting while driving. We need to remember that texting while driving cause distractions that can be very dangerous. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles of Florida, the first time that you receive a warning for texting while driving you will not receive any points in your driver’s license, but if this happens in a school zone, you will get two (2) points and six (6) if this causes an accident. “We will be very strict in applying the law if these type of violations happen. For example, legally if your car gets hit by the back, it will be the fault of the car hitting you, but if this happens because the driver in front is dropping a student in a zone not assigned for this purpose, this driver will be the only one responsible for the accident,” said Martinez. According to the Clerk of Courts of Miami-Dade, if you exceed the established speed limit of 15 miles in a school zone during drop off or pick up, the fines can go from $169 dollars, if the excess ranges between one and five miles and up to $619 dollars, if the excess is of 30 miles and above. Another fine established by the Clerk of Courts of Miami-Dade is not using your safety belt, for this you will have to pay $129 dollars, if you do not comply with the stop sign of a school bus this carries a fine of $284 dollars and dropping children in zones not assigned for this purpose carries a fine of $186 dollars and three points in your driver’s license. Also remember that any fine, in general, also represents an increase in your insurance policy. As a representative of the Doral Police Department, officer Martinez explained that the objective of the officers of this department is not to sanction or repress the residents, but to provide orientation and education about proper traffic behaviors, but they will be severe in the application of the corresponding sanctions to all traffic laws violations.”

on el principal objetivo de velar por la seguridad de niños, adolescentes, padres y trabajadores escolares y lograr que el desplazamiento vehicular sea más fluido durante las horas de entrada y salida de las escuelas, la Policía de Doral implementará su acostumbrado operativo de regreso clases. Así lo dio a conocer el oficial de la Policía de Doral, Luis Martínez, quien explicó que este operativo se iniciará el mismo día que comienzan las clases, el próximo lunes 22 de agosto del 2016 y cubrirá todas las escuelas de Doral, públicas y charter, destacando un agente policía en cada una de ellas. “Por lo general, las escuelas públicas tiene un policía asignado por la misma institución educativa, pero igualmente nosotros tendremos un agente destacado en cada una de ellas. Nuestra intención es reforzar la seguridad en absolutamente todas las escuelas de Doral, incluyendo un charter nuevo que abre sus puertas este año, el Doral International Math & Science Academy, ubicado en la 6700 NW 104th Ave, en Doral”, explica el oficial Martínez. El oficial Martínez indicó, igualmente, que también tendrán efectivos policiales en las vías que presentan mayor desplazamiento vehicular durante el horario escolar. “Por ejemplo, tendremos agentes por toda la NW41 calle en las intersecciones de las avenidas 107, 97, 87 y 79. Ellos tendrán la labor de monitorear el tránsito y coordinar el flujo del tráfico en el sentido que haya más congestión”. Los oficiales de la Policía de Doral que serán destacados en las escuelas pertenecen a la Unidad Escolar y están altamente capacitados en la atención a los niños y en el resguardo a las zonas estudiantiles. Los agentes que estarán ubicados en las principales calles de la ciudad forman parte de la Unidad Motorizada, están especializados en tránsito y tienen mayor capacidad de desplazamiento. “Por lo general, las primeras dos semanas de este operativo son las más fuertes, porque hay padres nuevos que no conocen el sistema y los que no lo son tienen que acostumbrase de nuevo a la rutina escolar. También hay muchos niños que cambian de grado y por ende, los horarios o las escuelas ya no son los mismos y tienen que adaptarse a esto. Después de estas dos semanas iníciales, todo tiende a normalizarse.”, comenta Martínez.

Doral es la única ciudad del condado de Miami-Dade que coloca un oficial de policía al servicio de cada escuela y lo hace con la decidida intención de prevenir accidentes, garantizar la seguridad de los estudiantes y sus padres y disminuir el congestionamiento del tránsito. “Estamos haciendo estos operativos escolares desde que Doral fue fundada y siempre nos hemos esmerado en que los mismos sirvan para que el regreso a clases sea más seguro y sencillo para todos”.

CERO TOLERANCIA

“Cero tolerancia”. Con esta frase el oficial Martínez dejó claro que la Policía de Doral va a estar completamente enfocada en evitar las violaciones más comunes durante las entradas y salidas de las escuelas, pues es la única forma de prevenir accidentes y lograr que el desplazamiento de los vehículos sea más fluido. “Si bien nuestra misión es orientar a los padres, guiar el tránsito y tratar de que todo fluya de forma más armónica y tranquila posible, también estamos en la obligación de cumplir y hacer cumplir las leyes de tránsito que son las que garantizan el correcto comportamiento ciudadano”, manifestó el oficial Martínez. Explica Martínez que las violaciones de tránsito más comunes durante los horarios de entrada y salida de las escuelas son: exceder la velocidad permitida en las zonas escolares a estas horas que es 15 millas, dejar a los estudiantes en áreas no asignadas para ello y enviar mensajes de texto mientras se conduce. Recordemos que enviar mensajes de texto mientras se conduce implica distracciones que pueden ser muy peligrosas. De acuerdo al Departamento de Vehículos Motorizados de Florida, la primera vez que usted recibe una advertencia por textear mientras maneja no recibirá ningún punto en su licencia, pero si esto sucede en una zona escolar obtendrá dos (2) puntos y seis (6) si sucede un accidente por esta causa. “Seremos muy estrictos en la aplicación de la ley si se cometen estas violaciones. Por ejemplo, lo

legalmente establecido cuando a un conductor le golpean el vehículo por la parte trasera es que el de atrás es el culpable, sin embargo, si esto sucede porque el conductor está dejando a un estudiante en una zona no asignada, él será el único responsable de este accidente”, señala Martínez. De acuerdo al Clerk of the Courts de Miami-Dade, si usted excede las 15 millas establecidas para conducir en las zonas escolares durante el horario de entrada y salida, las multas pueden ir desde $169 dólares, si el exceso oscila entre una y cinco millas hasta $619 dólares, si el exceso es de 30 millas o más. Otras de las multas referidas en el Clerk of the Courts de Miami-Dade, es no usar el cinturón de seguridad, por lo cual usted deberá pagar $129 dólares, no atender la señal de pare de un autobús escolar que implica una multa de $284 dólares y dejar a los niños en zonas no asignadas que conlleva una multa de $186 dólares y tres puntos en su licencia de conducir. Recuerde que cualquier multa, por lo general, también representa un incremento en su póliza de seguro. Como representante de la Policía de Doral, el oficial Martínez explicó que el objetivo de los funcionarios de este cuerpo de seguridad no es sancionar ni reprimir a los ciudadanos, sino orientarlos y educarlos en el correcto comportamiento vial, pero que serán muy severos en la aplicación de sanciones a las violaciones a las leyes de tránsito”.

Parks and Police 4 Kids Foundation Relaunches Projects By Maria Alejandra Pulgar @marialepulgar - NAHJ #37172

he Parks and Police 4 Kids (PP4K) Foundation was created in 2006 by the City of Doral as a charitable organization, with the mission “to provide educational, recreational and social programs for the youth of Doral, with a primary focus on the prevention of juvenile delinquency”. On its 10 years of existence, many children in the community have benefited of the work of this organization through the After School programs that were offered to children at risk in the public and charter schools of the City. All programs were coordinated by the City of Doral Police Department in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department and funded through PP4K. After going through reorganization in the past three years, the foundation is looking forward to reactivating its projects and initiatives, and to incorporating new programs to benefit the children in the community. In addition, they are working on increasing the involvement and support of the businesses in the community towards their objectives, to find additional funding sources for the projects, now that the main financial contributor of the foundation, the PGA Golf Championship, is no longer going to take place in the City of Doral.

HOW IS PP4K MANAGED?

Since its creation, several teams of board members, nominated through the Mayor’s office, coordinated the activities and fundraising efforts of the foundation through an “Advisory Board”. On 2013 the organization was restructured, its bylaws were reviewed and Doral Councilmembers served as board officers while new members were appointed. By the end of 2015, each councilmember started appointing a resident to replace them as Director to the PP4K Board and the team is currently composed by: Elizabeth Canchola, appointed by Vice Mayor Christi Fraga; Gerardo Vera, appointed by Councilman Pete Cabrera; Fernando Horruitiner, appointed by Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz; Jodi Steinbauer, appointed by Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez and Frank Silva, appointed by Mayor Luigi Boria. During their most recent board meeting, Ms. Canchola was selected as Chair, Mr. Vera as ViceChair and Mr. Horruitiner as Treasurer. All the new Directors of the organization are

volunteer Doral residents who offer their time and talents to reinvigorate the foundation. Barbara Hernandez, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Doral, is the Executive Director of PP4K, and personnel from the Police Department through their School Resource Unit assist the foundation with their activities.

PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS TO BENEFIT DORAL SCHOOLS

“We are right now working to bring back the projects that worked first and we want to bring some new ideas” commented Ms. Canchola, referring to the After School program sponsored by PP4K in Doral schools, that in the past was very successful on helping children identified as “at risk” at the schools. “The program works this way: During 4 days a week at the school, the kids get tutoring in the areas they are struggling and also work with members of the police department learning not only fitness and exercises and outdoor activities, but also about bullying, safety, internet safety, etc. It is a comprehensive program that we are starting this new school year.” Although the foundation would like to offer the program at all schools interested, their resources are limited. Participation in the program is “completely free for the children the school determines are at risk.” Children involved in the program are monitored on their evolution through the school system and when they reach high school they “have to come back to us to help by doing their community hours. Parents also have to be involved. For most of these kids, their parents are not that present in their lives for whatever reason, and we need them to know that their children are receiving this benefit.” They look forward to finding enough funds and resources to offer this and other programs in the future to all schools in Doral.

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT PP4K?

“It is very important to mention that this foundation does not receive any funds from the City” said Canchola. “No taxes that we pay are included in the funds granted to PP4K. We are not in the budget of the City. We exist with our own money, from donations that came directly from the PGA and some other

Elizabeth Canchola private entities that granted money to the foundation for an event. We are in the process of creating some other programs to get funds.” Community activities organized by the City of Doral, such as the recent National Night Out and Back to School Night, generate funds to benefit the PP4K programs. “In September we will have the Hispanic Heritage events and from the art exhibit it was approved by the Cultural Affairs Advisory Board to invite the artists to donate at least one piece to be auctioned to benefit PP4K.” The PP4K was “created by the City of Doral to benefit the children of the city. It is an independent entity originated by the city and for its residents. Now we mainly need more funding” to continue with their work, said Canchola. Any business or private entity that is willing to donate funds or propose ideas to the foundation can contact them through the City of Doral Parks and Recreation Department. They will be launching their website and social media outlets in the upcoming months to ease the process. As it is a 501-c-3 organization, all donations to PP4K are tax deductible.

Con nuevo liderazgo y para beneficio de los niños de Doral

a Fundación Parks and Police 4 Kids (PP4K), una organización sin fines de lucro, fue creada en 2006 por la Ciudad de Doral con la misión de “proporcionar programas educativos, recreativos y sociales para los niños y jóvenes de Doral, con el enfoque principal en la prevención de la delincuencia juvenil.” Durante sus 10 años de existencia, muchos niños de la comunidad se han beneficiado de los programas extraescolares, que la fundación ofrece a jóvenes “en riesgo” de las escuelas públicas y chárter de la Ciudad. Estos programas son coordinados por el Departamento de Policía de Doral, en conjunto con Parques y Recreación y son financiados por PP4K. Luego de un proceso de reorganización, la fundación espera reactivar todos sus proyectos e iniciativas, incorporando además nuevos programas para beneficio de los niños de la comunidad. Adicionalmente, esperan incentivar la participación y apoyo de los negocios de la ciudad, para encontrar fondos adicionales para sus proyectos, pues hasta ahora el principal contribuyente de la fundación había sido el Campeonato de Golf PGA que a partir de 2017 ya no se realizará en Doral.

¿CÓMO FUNCIONA PP4K?

En principio la fundación era manejada a través de un Comité Asesor, nominado por el Alcalde, para coordinar las actividades y esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos. Desde el 2013 PP4K se reestructuró, se revisaron sus estatutos y los Concejales de Doral sirvieron como Directores mientras se seleccionaba los nuevos miembros. A fines de 2015 cada miembro de Consejo designó un residente para reemplazarle en la directiva de PP4K. El equipo actual está compuesto por: Elizabeth Canchola, designada por la Vice-Alcalde Christi Fraga; Gerardo Vera, designado por el Concejal Pete Cabrera; Fernando Horruitiner, designado por la Concejal Sandra Ruiz; Jodi Steinbauer, designada por la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez y Frank Silva, designado por el Alcalde Luigi Boria. Recientemente la Sra. Canchola fue designada Presidente de la Junta, el Sr. Vera Vice-Presidente y el Sr. Horruitiner Tesorero. Todos los miembros de la nueva junta directiva son residentes de Doral que realizan este trabajo de manera voluntaria, ofreciendo su tiempo y talento para reactivar la fundación. La participación en el programa es “completamente gratuita para los niños seleccionados por la escuela.” Estos niños son monitoreados durante toda su evolución en el Sistema Escolar y cuando llegan a la Secundaria deben “regresar al programa como ayudantes, y hacen con nosotros sus horas comunitarias. Los padres también deben involucrarse. Para muchos de estos niños, sus padres están ausentes de sus vidas por diferentes razones y necesitamos que participen y conozcan los beneficios que sus hijos reciben del programa.” La fundación espera recaudar fondos y recursos suficientes en el futuro cercano para poder ofrecer el programa a todas las escuelas de Doral.

¿CÓMO PUEDE AYUDAR LA COMUNIDAD A PP4K?

Elizabeth Canchola de PP4K figura la Directora de Parques y Recreación Bárbara Hernández, y el personal de la Unidad de Recursos Escolares de la Policía de Doral apoya a la fundación en sus actividades.

PROYECTOS Y PROGRAMAS PARA LAS ESCUELAS DE DORAL

“Estamos trabajando para recuperar los proyectos que funcionaron anteriormente e iremos incorporando poco a poco nuevas ideas” comentó la Sra. Canchola, refiriéndose al programa extraescolar patrocinado por PP4K en varias escuelas de Doral en el pasado. Este programa funcionó exitosamente ayudando a niños identificados ‘en riesgo’ por sus escuelas. “El programa funciona de esta manera: cuatro días a la semana los niños participantes reciben tutoría después de la escuela en las áreas donde tengan dificultad y luego reciben entrenamiento con los miembros de la policía, en las áreas de acondicionamiento físico, actividades al aire libre, prevención del abuso, seguridad, uso seguro de internet, etc. Es un programa muy completo que retomaremos al comienzo del próximo año escolar.” Aunque la fundación desearía ofrecer el programa

“Es importante destacar que la fundación no recibe fondos de la Ciudad” explica Canchola. “Ningún dinero de los contribuyentes es otorgado a PP4K en el presupuesto. PP4K existe de manera autónoma, con las donaciones recibidas directamente desde el PGA y otras entidades privadas que otorgan fondos para los eventos y actividades. Estamos en el proceso de crear otros programas que nos permitan recaudar fondos adicionales.” Eventos comunitarios organizados por la Ciudad de Doral, como la reciente “Noche de Regreso a la Escuela” generan fondos para los programas de PP4K. “En Septiembre tendremos los eventos de Herencia Hispana y a través del Consejo Asesor de Cultura invitaremos a los artistas participantes a donar una obra para subastarla a beneficio de PP4K.” La fundación fue “creada por la Alcaldía de Doral para beneficiar a los niños de la ciudad. Es un ente independiente creado para la ciudad y sus residentes. Ahora solo necesitamos asegurar más fondos para poder continuar” concluyó Canchola. Los negocios o entidades privadas que deseen donar fondos o proponer ideas para PP4K pueden contactarlos a través del Departamento de Parques y Recreación. La fundación está preparando el lanzamiento de su página web y otras redes sociales muy pronto. Por ser una organización 501-c-3, todas las donaciones recibidas son deducibles del impuesto. Esperan muy pronto contar con nuevos patrocinadores para continuar su gestión.

okémon Go fever is causing a frenzy all over the United States and it is literally everywhere. Apart from allowing the users to virtually capture Pokémon along the country’s streets, now it is also being used by political organizations, not only to catch Pikachu, yet also to inspire the young crowds to participate in the elections, as several activists are gathering at the locations where the Pokémon are found to speak to the players about the importance of the vote and how to register for voting. This global phenomenon is making such an impact on the political arena that the presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are using Pokémon Go to reach their voters by inviting them to meet at certain PokeStops. As we can see, Pokémon Go has reached every scenario and by following the lead of this popular game, Doral Family Journal, went all over the halls of the City of Doral trying to catch a Pikachu, Squirtle or a Weedle,

but what we really found was far more interesting… Rather than finding monstrous creatures, we found characters, who from now on, we will see everywhere: the candidates for Mayor and for the City Council, who aspire to be elected this coming November.

There are three candidates running for Doral´s mayoral election… Juan Carlos Bermúdez, who history backs him up as first mayor of the city; Luigi Boria, current head of the city who relies on the achievements of his term, and Sandra Ruíz, current councilwoman who aspires to become the first female mayor of Doral and who was also part of the founding team of the city. The Doral council seat 1 is the most disputed of this election, with a total of five women and one man running to be elected for the post, all of them claiming to be prepared to hold the seat because of their social

commitment towards the city and their own experience as residents. Council seat 3, currently held by Vicemayor Chisti Fraga, is to be decided between her, who runs for re-election, and two other Doral residents who base their campaigns on their community service experience and assure they are the best option for the city of Doral. a fiebre del Pokémon Go está causando furor en los Estados Unidos y está, literalmente, en todas partes. Además de que permite a los usuarios capturar Pokemones, virtualmente, en las calles del país, ahora también está siendo usando por organizaciones políticas, no solo para atrapar a Pikachu, sino también para motivar a los jóvenes a participar en las elecciones; Varios activistas están en los lugares de encuentro para hablar con los jugadores sobre la importancia del sufragio y cómo inscribirse para votar. Este fenómeno global está impactando de tal forma en la política electoral que los candidatos presidenciales, Hillary Clinton y Donald Trump utilizan el Pokémon Go para llegar a sus votantes e invitarlos a la reunión en algún Pokéstop. ummer means fun - school vacation and long lazy days filled with outdoor family outings, cookouts and adventure. Here in South Florida it likely includes days of sunny sandy beaches, sunscreens, pollens and insects. If you have allergies, take these simple precautions and make them part of your summer routine. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

FLYING AND CRAWLING CRITTERS: For most people insect stings are just a nuisance as most people are not allergic. Red and black Imported Fire Ants are common in Florida particularly during the summer months and are members of the same family as bees and wasps. Allergic reactions to these insects can be severe with immediate onset of dizziness, weakness, unconsciousness, throat tightness, difficulty breathing, wheezing or hives. People with severe allergy should carry an epinephrine auto injector (EpiPen) to be used immediately, also, the emergency medical team should be called to the scene to continue medical surveillance as soon as possible because a severe reaction may be fatal. Insect stings can also cause local reactions that may involve a large, painful, swollen area around the sting site. Local reactions are not a major concern as they do not pose a significant risk of life-threatening reactions. Also, remember that a normal or nonallergic reaction to Fire Ants includes redness and a postule at the sting site. Fire Ants build mounds in the fields and insect repellent does not work against them, therefore, be vigilant, avoid mounds, do not wear sandals or walk barefoot in the grass. If you have experienced a severe reaction to an insect sting, talk to your doctor for a consultation with an allergist. Your allergist will likely perform skin tests or blood tests to confirm the allergy to the specific insect and recommend a preventative program of desensitization using venom immunotherapy or allergy injection which is close to 100% effective in preventing a subsequent reaction to stings of that insect. Your allergist will prescribe an EpiPen and advise you to carry it with you at all times. ITCHY SKIN RASH: Sunscreens are a common cause of both contact dermatitis and photo contact dermatitis. Sunscreens are products applied to the skin that absorb or reflect ultraviolet (UV) radiation. One can develop an allergic reaction to the active

ingredient or to the fragrances and preservatives present in the sunscreen. If you experience an allergic reaction to a sunscreen, remove the sunscreen, wash the skin with soap and water and apply a cortisone cream. Follow up with your doctor for possible referral to an allergist or dermatologist to determine a safe UV protection alternative sunscreen. It is important to identify the chemical responsible for the allergic reaction so you can avoid using a skin product containing such a chemical in the future. Contact allergy tends to persist indefinitely and avoidance is the only preventive treatment available at this time. ACHOO: Large amounts of pollen are released into the air by some plants for the purpose of fertilization. These pollen when inhaled by an allergic person trigger an inflammatory reaction in the mucosa of their nose, bronchial tree and conjunctiva which in turn causes sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, cough, wheezing and even asthma. People with seasonal allergies experience symptoms during a specific season. Here in Florida people allergic to grass pollen experience more severe symptoms during the summer months when our grasses are pollinating. Those allergic to tree pollen are affected during the spring and those allergic to weed pollen are affected during the fall. Most pollens are released into the air during early morning hours, so avoid being outdoors during the early mornings. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, avoid gardening and yard work specially during the morning hours, and change clothing, wash your hands and hair when you come home. Monitor the daily pollen and mold counts at allergyweb.com Immunotherapy or allergy injection is a safe and effective preventive treatment that can significantly reduce allergy symptoms. Your allergist will perform skin or blood testing to accurately identify your specific sensitivities to aero-allergens such as pollen, house dust mites and mold spores. Once your specific allergies are identified, your allergist may recommend immunotherapy or allergy shot which is a treatment program to desensitize you to your specific allergies. Immunotherapy should enable you to inhale the allergens in their natural environment with greatly reduced inflammation of the respiratory tract and therefore significant reduction of symptoms.

ONE MAN’S FOOD IS ANOTHER MAN’S POISON: Food Allergy is relatively rare, it affects approximately 1% of the adult population and up to 6 to 8 % of children under 3 years. For reasons not well understood, the incidence of food allergy is increasing and peanut allergy is particularly increasing in some countries such as the United States. Any food can cause an allergic reaction but the foods implicated in the great majority of reactions are cow’s milk, egg peanut, tree nuts, wheat, fish and shellfish. The allergic reaction is an immunologic reaction to a protein in the food. The reaction occurs shortly, usually within 4 hours but sometimes immediately after the ingestion of the food and can cause itchy hives in skin, swelling, lump in the throat, difficulty breathing , wheezing, tight chest, dizziness, loss of consciousness and even death. People with food allergy, like people with insect allergies, should always carry an epinephrine auto injector or EpiPen to be used immediately after a reaction to an accidental food ingestion. Also, Fire Rescue should be called to the scene to continue medical management as the duration of effects of EpiPen is only about 15 min. If you have a food allergy ask your doctor to refer you to an allergist. Your allergist will confirm the allergy to the suspected food by performing skin test or blood tests. You should strictly avoid the culprit food, read all food labels and be vigilant of hidden sources of the food in restaurants and friend’s homes. Always carry the EpiPen and familiarize yourself with its proper use. Tell your friends that you are allergic and to which specific food. Make sure to inform teachers, camp supervisors, babysitters and anyone responsible for the care of your child that your child is allergic to a specific food or family of foods. Some people are allergic to peanut and all tree nuts or to all fish or all shellfish. Also, teachers and caregivers should have an EpiPen and be taught when and how to use it. Prepare and make a check list to not forget necessary medications, sprays and inhalers. If allergic to insects or foods, be vigilant of flying insects, Fire Ant mounds and inform everyone that you have a food allergy. And always, always bring your EpiPen. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

Top Level Care for Critically Injured Patients

Kendall Regional Medical Center Designated Provisional Level I Trauma Center

endall Regional Medical Center (KRMC) has received provisional designation as Level I Trauma Center by the Florida Department of Health, allowing them to provide emergency trauma care for pediatric patients as well as for adults. It is the second facility designated Level I Trauma Center and the only one located at the west of Miami-Dade County. “Being a Level I facility, on pediatrics we can take patients from Key West to Miami. For adults the area is smaller, according to the Department of Health and is from the north of Doral, down south to Kendall Drive” explained Peter Jude, Director of Marketing and Community Relations for KRMC. The South Florida Trauma Center at KRMC has been in operation as a Level II (only for adults) since November 2011, under the leadership of Trauma Surgeon Dr. Mark G. McKenney as Medical Director, working towards the idea of preparing the center to achieve the Level I designation.

If there is any specific injury or medical problem I can call them and they either talk to me on the phone or can drive in immediately to help out. That is the big difference. It leads to a much lower mortality rate for the severely injured,” including pediatric patients. “Any child injured in a crash can also be brought here.”

ALWAYS WITH THE PATIENT’S WELLBEING IN MIND

“The application process took around 6 months” explained Dr. McKenney, “but we were preparing since 2011; we knew that this was in the future and we started putting all the pieces into play. From the first day we had the trauma surgeon stay in the house 24/7 so there was no delay once a patient arrived.” They later added microsurgery, pediatric surgery and all other subspecialties, both for children and adults that allowed them to qualify for the new designation.

ADVANTAGES OF LEVEL I TRAUMA CENTERS

When accidents happen, emergency teams bring injured victims to the geographically closest Trauma Center. In many cases, an additional challenge was added to the situation when pediatric and adult patients had to be taken to different facilities. Once KRMC Trauma Center became the Level I facility

“There is collaboration. We want to give our patients the best possible care and we have all subspecialists on call” said Dr. McKenney, explaining that as a Trauma Center Director he has the chance to meet once a month with doctors from other trauma centers in the area to discuss unusual cases, sharing experiences. “If there are unusual injuries that are maybe seen once in a while, you can call someone with experience on it and get their advice. Always with the patient’s wellbeing in mind, that is our number one, two and three priority: delivering the best care for the patient.” At a given time, around 100 people are present in the hospital taking care of trauma patients. “It includes everybody from the respiratory therapists, nurses, doctors dedicated to trauma patients, technicians and aides. Nurses and doctors take 12 hours shifts.” “Everybody who is injured, we take care. There is no consideration on the insurance or immigration status, we just have to deliver the same good care to everybody; the important part is having a good outcome. We are here to help everybody.” Dr. McKenney shares that the most common injuries they have seen on the thousands of patients at the trauma

Mark-McKenney-MD center are mostly consequence of car accidents, followed by people who fall and get injured, gunshot wounds and stab wounds. “It is so important that people wear a seatbelt even when positioning the car. Seat belts, car seats and airbags are huge life savers. Car accidents are the most common form of injury and disability. You have to watch what you are doing and what other people are doing while driving.” Those who work at Trauma Centers have very intense work hours. “In huge events, when we see people that were heading home and have a bad accident, and it all comes down to the next few minutes, whether they would make it or not, the intensity can just skyrocket off the charts. The reward when they make it is enormous. You can’t bet the elation, the celebration, when you see that your job really matters” said Dr. McKenney. “On the other hand if the patient doesn’t make it, there is like a pause, everybody wishing something else could have been done differently. The emotional swings are enormous. But the feeling when you pull someone through and realize he is going to make it, there is nothing better actually.” Caring, highly qualified doctors, nurses and staff, and state of the art facilities make a difference in the lives of many patients at the KRMC Level I Trauma Center every day. It is a great advantage for the residents of MiamiDade County to have this facility available to provide the best service to critically injured patients of all ages.

endall Regional Medical Center (KRMC) ha recibido la designación provisional como Centro de Atención de Emergencias Nivel I por parte del Departamento de Salud del Estado de Florida. Esto les permite proveer cuidados de emergencia crítica tanto a pacientes adultos como infantiles. Es el segundo centro de este tipo en el Condado Miami-Dade y el único ubicado en el oeste de Miami. “Al ser un centro de Nivel I, podemos atender pacientes pediátricos desde Key West hasta Miami. En el caso de pacientes adultos el área es más restringida. De acuerdo al Departamento de Salud, nosotros podemos atender pacientes envueltos en accidentes en el área desde el Norte de Doral hasta Kendall Drive”, explicó Peter Jude, Director de Mercadeo y Relaciones con la Comunidad de KRMC. El Centro de Atención de Emergencias (CAE) de KRMC está en operación como Nivel II (solamente para adultos) desde noviembre de 2011, bajo el liderazgo del Cirujano de Emergencias Dr. Mark G. McKenney como Director Médico. Desde el principio tuvieron la idea de preparar el centro hasta lograr la designación como Nivel I que han recibido ahora. “El proceso de aplicación tomó alrededor de 6 meses” explicó McKenney, “pero nos estuvimos preparando desde 2011; esa era nuestra visión de futuro y desde el comienzo pusimos las piezas en su lugar para lograrlo. Desde el primer día tenemos un Cirujano de Emergencias presente 24/7, de esa manera no hay tardanzas para atender a los pacientes que recibimos.” Posteriormente incorporaron especialistas en microcirugía, cirugía pediátrica y otras sub especialidades, tanto para niños como para adultos. De esa manera pudieron estar calificados para esta nueva designación.

En el CAE Nivel I de KRMC los médicos están en el hospital 24/7/365 y cuando los pacientes llegan ya el equipo necesario está listo para atenderlos, de acuerdo a la información recibida por el personal del equipo de rescate.” “Tenemos 47 especialistas a disposición para consulta y apoyo. Para cualquier tipo de herida o problema médico especifico, ellos pueden apoyarnos. Esa diferencia es muy importante, porque permite tener una tasa de mortalidad baja aun en los casos más graves” incluyendo pacientes pediátricos. “Cualquier niño que haya resultado herido en un accidente también puede ser tratado aquí por especialistas preparados para atender esos casos.”

SIEMPRE CON EL BIENESTAR DEL PACIENTE EN MENTE

“Todos colaboramos, queremos proporcionar a nuestros pacientes el mejor cuidado posible y para ello contamos con sub-especialistas a disposición” explicó Dr. McKenney. Como Director del Centro, él tiene la oportunidad una vez al mes con médicos de otros Centros de Emergencia en el área para discutir casos especiales y

compartir experiencias. “Nuestra primera prioridad es siempre tener en mente el bienestar de los pacientes.” Alrededor de 100 personas conforman en cada turno el personal del CAE. “Esto incluye médicos, enfermeras, terapistas, técnicos y asistentes, todos especializados en casos graves. Las enfermeras y médicos trabajan turnos de 12 horas.” “Atendemos a todos los heridos que recibimos, en ningún momento se hace distinción por situación migratoria o por disponibilidad de seguro médico. Nuestro trabajo es proporcionar atención al herido y ayudarle a recuperar su salud. Lo más importante es lograr un buen resultado con buen pronóstico. Nosotros estamos aquí para ayudar a todos.” Dr. McKenney comenta que las heridas más comunes que ha visto en los miles de pacientes atendidos en el CAE son consecuencia de accidentes automovilísticos. Las personas deben estar alerta de lo que hacen al manejar.” Quienes trabajan en los CAE tienen horas de trabajo muy intensas. “Hay momentos en que recibimos pacientes que se dirigían a casa y se ven envueltos en un accidente; en esos breves momentos en que no sabemos si sobrevivirán o no la intensidad es fuera de serie. La recompensa la recibimos cuando logramos estabilizarlos. El júbilo es incomparable, en ese momento sentimos que nuestro trabajo es realmente muy importante” dice Dr. McKenney. “Cuando perdemos un paciente critico hay una pausa, un deseo general de haber podido hacer algo más para tener resultado diferente, el desgaste emocional es enorme. Sin embargo, cuando logramos salvar una vida, nada se compara a esa emoción.” Es una gran ventaja para los residentes del Condado Miami-Dade poder contar con este recurso que proporciona la mejor atención médica para heridos críticos de todas las edades. Elimina Malos Hábitos Antes del Regreso a Clases

h, los días de ocio del verano – los niños se pasan todo el año escolar ansiosos porque llegue esa temporada llena de diversión y libertad. Pero con ella viene una falta de estructura que puede conducir a malos hábitos, como dormir hasta tarde, comer demasiadas golosinas, y jugar demasiados videojuegos. Por resultado, tienen un difícil período de reajuste cuando las clases comienzan de nuevo. De hecho, muchos chicos regresan a la escuela con alrededor de un mes más o menos de atraso en comparación con su nivel al terminar el año académico anterior. Por suerte, es fácil encaminar a tu hijo de nuevo, especialmente si hacia el final del verano le preparas ese camino, señala Jen Trachtenberg, M.D., profesora clínica asistente de pediatría en la Icahn School of Medicine de Mount Sinai y autora de Good Kids, Bad Habits. He aquí algunas tácticas que con certeza ayudarán a que tu hijo establezca hábitos sanos – abarcando desde su dormir y gestión del tiempo hasta su alimentación y estudios – mucho antes de sonar el primer timbre escolar: Haz prioridad del dormir. Los estudios demuestran que los niños necesitan dormir más de lo que crees para funcionar lo mejor posible en la escuela: un promedio de 10 a 11 horas para niños de 3 a 12 años, y de 8 a 9 horas para chicos de 13 a 18. Es posible que acumulen esas horas en el verano, pero ajustarse al despertador del nuevo año escolar puede ser muy difícil sin una transición. En vez de eso, dos semanas antes de comenzar las clases, poco a poco ajusta en incrementos de quince minutos la hora de tu hijo ir a dormir y despertar, así el cambio no será tan impactante. Trachtenberg sugiere mantener la habitación oscura y eliminar la TV y los dispositivos electrónicos de la habitación, y no usarlos antes de acostarse, ya que “se sabe que la luz que emanan estos dispositivos inhibe el sueño”. Insiste en una rutina para leer. Lo ideal es que los niños lean y escriban durante todo el verano, pero si no lo han hecho, aún hay tiempo para que lo empiecen a hacer. Aparta una hora o dos cada día para leer juntos, y visiten la biblioteca para elegir libros que ellos lean por su cuenta. Otra opción es buscar en internet hojas de práctica aptas para distintas edades, y que ellos las hagan por completo diariamente. Haz que se alimenten bien. El secreto: Haz del desayuno una prioridad. Según los expertos de la Cleveland Clinic, un desayuno saludable en la mañana ayudará para que tu hijo rinda lo mejor de sí en la escuela, y los investigadores añaden que también mejora la memoria, la asistencia, la energía y el temperamento. Selección fácil: tostadas con mantequilla de maní (cacahuate) o cereales con frutas. Aparta tiempo para estudiar. Saber manejar el tiempo antes de que comiencen las clases es algo que dará a tu hijo una ventaja. Esta es una forma de logarlo: Anímalo a crear una lista diaria de cosas “por hacer” con tareas sencillas como tender su cama o dar de comer al perro, cosas que puede tachar durante el día. Otra opción: Un calendario semanal o mensual en el que marque lo que está por venir y donde puede señalar con colores las cosas divertidas, como días para jugar y tareas domésticas.

FPL announces new storm hardening plan, including major investments to enhance the electric system serving the Doral area

FPL plans to invest $1.75 billion system-wide over the next three years to improve the overall resiliency of its electric system

lorida Power & Light Company (FPL) today outlined its electric system upgrades in the Doral area, as part of the company’s overall 2016-2018 storm hardening plan. The enhancements, which have helped FPL achieve the best system reliability in Florida and 50 percent better than the national average, will position the company to deliver even greater reliable electric service for customers year-round. “Our three-year storm hardening plan will help us deliver reliable service to our customers in Doral, thanks to a more resilient energy grid,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. “Our customers are already seeing the benefits of strengthened power lines, with hardened lines showing on average a 40 percent improvement in everyday performance. Through a number of new projects in the area, we will deliver even better service they can count on in good weather and bad.” Improvements within the statewide plan include the completion of hardening main (feeder) power lines serving critical community facilities, upgrading the main power lines across FPL’s service area, initiating upgrades of smaller neighborhood (lateral) power lines and continuing to replace wooden transmission line structures with steel and concrete towers. FPL will also continue to deploy tens of thousands of intelligent devices and smart switches — in addition to the 36,000 installed to date — to help detect and predict problems and restore service faster when outages occur.

2016 IMPROVEMENTS IN THE DORAL AREA

This year’s investment includes upgrades to nine main power lines serving key facilities in the area. The projects strengthen the electric system to better withstand major storms and allow for faster service restoration following power outages. The work consists of installing stronger power poles — including, in some projects, concrete poles designed to withstand wind gusts of up to 145 mph. “FPL is continuing to invest in building a stronger and smarter grid that our customers in the Doral area can count on year-round,” said

Manny Miranda, senior vice president of Power Delivery for FPL. “Upgrading the system not only allows us to restore power to our customers faster, but it aids in getting life back to normal quicker when customers need us the most.” FPL will also install four automated switches on main power lines and one automated switch on a smaller power line serving neighborhoods and subdivisions. The automated devices detect and prevent potential problems along the energy grid, as well as restore and reroute power, when necessary, to reduce the number of customers affected by an outage.

STRENGTHENING THE GRID

When the planned 2016 work is completed, FPL will have made the following improvements in and near Doral since 2006: • Reinforced 16 main power lines, including those serving critical local facilities, such as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department Station 48, Miami-Dade County Police Department Midwest District Station, Baptist Medical Plaza and a 911 emergency communications center; • Inspected 2,730 power poles, restoring or replacing those that no longer meet the company’s standards for strength; • Cleared 685 miles of power lines of trees and vegetation — a major cause of power outages; • Inspected 59 main power lines and equipment using the latest infrared technology, helping FPL address issues before they cause outages; and • Installed smart grid technology, including eight automated switches on main power lines and 54 automated switches on smaller power lines serving neighborhoods, to help detect and prevent power issues and get life back to normal faster if outages occur. • Since 2006, FPL has invested more than $2 billion across its 35-county service area — in addition to ongoing system maintenance and improvement work — to make the energy grid stronger and smarter. This includes: • Strengthening more than 600 main power lines, including those that serve more than 700

critical community facilities, such as hospitals, police and fire stations and emergency communication systems; • Clearing vegetation — a major cause of power outages — from more than 135,000 miles of power lines; • Inspecting more than 1.4 million poles and upgrading or replacing those that no longer meet our standards for strength; and • Installing 4.8 million smart meters and 36,000 intelligent devices along the energy grid using advanced technology that helps detect problems and restore service faster when outages occur. Comunidad de Doral celebró “National Night Out”

El pasado 2 de agosto, cientos de familias se acercaron a Downtown Doral Park para participar del ‘National Night Out’ (Noche Nacional Contra el Crimen); un evento que se celebra en todo el país cada primer martes del mes de agosto con el único objetivo de crear conciencia de seguridad y prevención del delito. Los oficiales del Departamento de Policía alentaron a la comunidad para luchar contra el crimen y seguridad pública tomando parte en este tipo de programas. Conjuntamente, las autoridades municipales distribuyeron más de 700 mochilas y útiles escolares a los niños en edad escolar para ayudarlos a prepararse para el regreso a clases. Además se incluyeron otras actividades de entretenimiento familiar, presentaciones especiales y comida gratis. La Noche Nacional Contra el Crimen fue introducida por la Asociación Nacional de Vigilancia del Pueblo (NATW) en 1984. La Noche Nacional está diseñada para aumentar la prevención del crimen; apoyar y participar en programas locales anti-crimen y fortalecer el espíritu de la comunidad en sociedad con la policía.

Doral Breaks Ground on Police Substation

he Doral City Council, joined by District 12 Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, broke ground on Doral’s first police substation. The new 12,500 sq. ft. complex will include a community center and be located on the 3700 block of NW 97th Avenue, in the heart of the city. The substation will consolidate the police department’s community policing division and provide a centralized location for the School Resource Unit, Neighborhood Resource Unit, Bike Squad and K-9 Unit, allowing the residents to access improved community oriented policing services in a convenient location. The substation also expands the police department’s “Safe Spot” program, providing the community with a safer environment to transact internet sales or comply with child custody requirements. The Doral Police Department strives to build a strong relationship with the residents, businesses, and schools of Doral. “Building trust and legitimacy in the community is one of the six pillars of 21st century policing,” said Vice Mayor Christi Fraga. “Our force has been honored by Attorney General Lynch for this and our 21st century police force needs a 21st century facility,” the Vice Mayor added.
