In-the-shade meeting revived public debate over expenses for Legal Defense on Ethical Matters

Doral Council authorizes legal counsel for City Officials

public discussion surpassed last November has revived after the February Zoning Meeting, when a resolution included at the last minute in the consent agenda authorized legal counsel to Council Members and City Officials involved in an ongoing litigation between a vendor and the City. Although the City of Doral Charter on section 4.10 (b) establishes that all agenda items should be submitted “at least seven days prior”, the ruling is specific to “the City Council regular meeting”. Therefore, the inclusion of a last minute item in a Zoning Meeting, even if it does not fall within the definition of emergency item established on section 4.10(e), would not be considered a Charter violation.

The last minute inclusion of the item in the consent agenda passed 4:1, being Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez the dissenting vote. Back in October, she also voted against Ordinance 2015-35 “Legal Defense on Ethical Matters”, which ended up dying for lack of motion in November. Said ordinance pursued a modification to the code to allow the City to pay for legal expenses in case Councilmembers and certain employees were found innocent when affected by malicious, frivolous or unfounded legal accusations.

Given that the legal counsel item was included at the last minute in the Zoning Meeting, the community did not have the chance to comment on the decision until it had been approved, and have resorted to public and social media to discuss it, assuming similarities between the resolution (which has not been disclosed) and the content of Ordinance 2015-35. According to the arguments explained by the City Attorney, on his one-minute presentation of the item on behalf of the City Manager’s Office, the resolution had been laid down by consensus during an inthe-shade meeting that took place January 20th,

where the ongoing litigation between SDE Media, LLC (a billboard company) and the City of Doral was discussed. As it is an issue not yet resolved, details pertaining to any matter related to the case have to stay in-the-shade and be discussed individually until the court issues a decision. For those lay on legal terms, “in-the-shade” means that no public records or details of a discussion on a legal matter can be released until the case is closed. The complexity of the situation increases given that the court had ruled, for all Councilmembers and certain employees, to turn in their personal cell phones as part of the ongoing investigation. Everybody obeyed the ruling except for Councilman Pete Cabrera, who declared to other media that he was acting to protect the private information of his clients stored on his phone and that he would not be intimidated by the accusations. According to the plaintiff Santiago Echemendía from SDE Media, his actions may cause Councilman Cabrera to pay a US$2000 fine daily, pending a the decision from the court. In addition, the City is already incurring on legal expenses for the defense of the case. The related amount has not yet been released as it is part of the in-the-shade information. During the regular Council, last February 3rd several residents expressed during public comments their concern on the legality of the decision of including the approval of the resolution in consent and their disagreement with the idea of the use of taxpayers’ money to pay for legal defense of City Officials. However, no additional action or discussion aroused within the Council regarding the matter. Until a decision from the court is issued and the records are released, any assumption about the financial impact of the approved resolution falls within the speculation realm.

CITY HALL VISITORS NOW HAVE TO REGISTER TO ENTER THE CHAMBERS People in attendance to the February regular Council Meeting found a new rule in place. Public had to follow a visitors’ registration procedure, where their identification information was recorded and a badge was issued for them to wear in a visible place during their presence in the building. At the end of this edition no information regarding the reasons, permanence or details of establishing the procedure had been officially shared by the City Manager’s Office, however the public received the new rule with a mix of surprise and disappointment, given that up to this date the ability to freely enter the Chamber to attend a meeting has been deemed a right for everyone who visited City Hall. Some people reported they felt intimidated by the fact of having to produce identification and being registered and labeled in order to participate in an open forum that is of public interest. Implementing such procedures without notice, although being safety measures, can be counterproductive to the idea of encouraging public participation, because all Doral residents need to assume their responsibility of being a watchdog on the operation of the city, hence the importance of showing up to express their opinion at Council and other public meetings. An increase and diversity in public participation is fundamental in the upcoming months to continue being informed and to voice the needs and opinions of the community in the Chambers, not only about the actions of Councilmembers but about all other matters that happen in the City, especially on this election year. These are issues that at the end of the day would impact all members of the community, not only those who take the time to be present at the meetings and publicly express their concern. Having a well-run City is everyone’s responsibility and citizenship is a right and a duty.

Reunión A-la-sombra reaviva la discusión sobre Defensa Legal en Casos de Ética

Concejales de Doral autorizan defensa legal para Oficiales de la Ciudad

na discusión publica que se suponía superada desde Noviembre ha resurgido después de la Reunión de Zonificación de febrero en Doral, pues a último minuto se incluyó en la agenda por consenso un punto para autorizar la defensa legal de los concejales de Doral y oficiales municipales involucrados en una demanda interpuesta por un proveedor en contra de la Ciudad de Doral. Aun cuando la Carta Constitutiva establece en la sección 4.10 (b) que todos los puntos de agenda deben enviarse “mínimo siete días antes”, la regla se refiere específicamente a “la reunión regular del Concejo Municipal”. Por lo tanto, la inclusión de un punto de agenda a última hora en una Reunión de Zonificación no podría considerarse una violación a la Carta, aun cuando la discusión no califique como emergencia según lo especificado en la sección 4.10 (e).

La inclusión del punto en el consenso fue aprobado con un solo voto en contra, el de la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez. En octubre ella también votó en contra de la ordenanza 2015-35 “Defensa legal en casos de ética” la cual terminó siendo descartada en segunda discusión. Esa ordenanza modificaba el código para permitir que la Ciudad pagara por los gastos legales incurridos por los miembros del Concejo y ciertos empleados municipales cuando fueran encontrados inocentes y afectados por demandas de carácter malicioso y frívolo y sin fundamento legal.

Como el punto sobre la resolución de Defensa Legal fue incluido a último momento en la agenda de la Reunión de Zonificación, la comunidad no tuvo oportunidad de hacer ningún comentario público al respecto en ese momento. Muchos residentes recurrieron a las redes sociales para discutir la decisión, asumiendo coincidencias entre la resolución aprobada (cuyo contenido no ha sido difundido por formar parte del sumario de un caso legal abierto) y el contenido de la ordenanza 2015-35. El Abogado de la Ciudad Daniel Espino presentó el punto de agenda en nombre de la Oficina del Administrador Municipal. Explicó que la decisión

sobre la resolución presentada había sido suspendida por consenso durante una reunión A-La-Sombra realizada el 20 de enero, donde se discutieron los detalles del proceso de la demanda presentada por SDE Media LLC (empresa propietaria de vallas publicitarias) contra la Ciudad de Doral. Por ser una reunión relativa a un caso legal abierto todos los detalles relacionados deben mantenerse en sumario (A-La-Sombra) hasta que el asunto se resuelva. Únicamente es posible discutirlos individualmente con cada uno de los involucrados. En Florida, el término legal “A-la-Sombra” implica que ninguna información que constituya registro público e incluya detalles sobre discusiones legales en proceso pueden revelarse hasta que el caso sea cerrado. La complejidad de la situación aumentó dado que la corte determinó que todos los Concejales y ciertos empleados deberían entregar sus teléfonos celulares particulares para revisarlos como parte de la investigación en proceso del caso. A excepción del Concejal Pete Cabrera, todos los demás involucrados obedecieron el mandato legal. Cabrera declaró a otros medios que sus acciones obedecen a la necesidad de proteger la información privada de sus clientes almacenada en el dispositivo móvil y que las acusaciones no le intimidaban. La parte acusadora, Sr. Santiago Echemendía de SDE Media, planteó públicamente que la corte podría ordenar que Cabrera termine pagando US$2000 diarios como multa hasta que cumpla con el mandato de entregar el teléfono. La Ciudad de Doral ya está pagando por gastos legales para defenderse en el caso. Los montos que se han desembolsado por ese concepto aún no han sido revelados, pues también forman parte de la información sumaria. El día 3 de febrero, durante la reunión regular del Concejo Municipal, varios residentes se expresaron durante los Comentarios Públicos, manifestando su desacuerdo con la inclusión y aprobación a último momento de la resolución de aprobación de defensa legal, al igual que desaprueban la idea de que se utilice dinero de los contribuyentes para pagar por la defensa legal de oficiales electos.

Sin embargo, el Concejo no tomó ninguna acción o realizó discusión adicional sobre el tema. Hasta que la corte emita un fallo final, cualquier suposición o afirmación sobre el impacto financiero de la resolución aprobada resultaría una mera especulación.

VISITANTES A LA ALCALDÍA DEBEN REGISTRARSE PARA ENTRAR EN LA CÁMARA Los asistentes a la reunión regular del Concejo Municipal de Febrero se encontraron con una nueva regla. Los visitantes deben ahora seguir un proceso de registro, donde se toma nota de su información de identificación y se les entrega un distintivo con foto que deben mantener visible durante su presencia en el Ayuntamiento. Al cierre de esta edición no se ha recibido información por parte de la Administración Municipal sobre los detalles, razones y permanencia de este nuevo procedimiento de identificación. Es de hacer notar que el público recibió la nueva regla con sorpresa y no sin desencanto, pues hasta el momento la posibilidad de entrar libremente al recinto donde se discuten las reglas de convivencia de la Ciudad había sido considerado un derecho de todo residente que quisiera visitarlo. Varias personas reportaron sentirse en cierto modo intimidados, al tener que identificarse y ser fotografiados y etiquetados para participar en un foro abierto de interés público. La implantación de procedimientos de esta naturaleza sin aviso previo, aun cuando son comprensibles por seguridad, puede ser contraproducente a la idea de alentar la participación pública en las reuniones municipales. Es fundamental que más ciudadanos se involucren, asistan, opinen. Que no sean siempre las mismas personas quienes acudan a la Ciudad a hablar en nombre de todos, puesto que es responsabilidad de todos velar por el bienestar de la comunidad. Las decisiones que se toman en la Alcaldía afectan a todos los residentes y empresarios. Asegurar el buen funcionamiento y la correcta operación administrativa constituye una responsabilidad y un derecho ciudadano.

Maylen Blardonis shares her Story

February 14th: National Donor Day A Gift of Love for Others By Grecia Romero

he well-known celebration of Valentine’s Day, or the “Day for Love and Friendship” as many people know it, makes February a very special month. It is a common practice that couples and friends demonstrate their feelings by exchanging gifts such as flowers, cards, and chocolates, or just simple acts of appreciations with one another. Maybe what is not so popular is that February 14th is also a very special date for those who have received the ultimate gift of their lives. The kind of gift that they will always treasure as a reminder of pure love, because that gift let them continue living: a donated organ. National Donor Day is the time of the year to recognize the loved ones who have given the gift of donation, have received a donation, are currently waiting or did not receive an organ in time. It is also the time to get informed and make the decision to become a donor and change the life of someone forever as it was the case of Maylen Blardonis whose story will be told in this article.

IN NEED OF AN ORGAN

Maylen was born with a hereditary disease called Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). If a person inherits the disease, the cysts are already present on the kidneys when he or she is born, and as the person gets older, the cysts begin to grow until they get to a point where they overtake the function of the kidneys causing for the person to go into dialysis and the need for being transplanted. As Maylen was going through the development of her disease, she held the hope that she wouldn’t need to go on dialysis or even be transplanted. But unfortunately on June 2014 one of the cysts burst causing irreversible damage to the kidney. This caused her to start the process of having to be added to the waiting list. She remembers: “Thinking back when I was told I needed to get listed for a transplant it did not affect me as much because I thought I would still have my kidney function, be on the list and get transplanted without needing to be on dialysis. What affected me the most is when I started the process of being listed and I was told that my kidneys had grown to such size that I had to get both of them removed before being transplanted. This meant being on dialysis which I never wanted to be.” That day for Maylen came February 23, 2014 when Dr. Gaetano Ciancio, Director of the Miami Transplant Institute, performed the double nephrectomy. Originally she just needed a kidney transplant, and she felt blessed to have a former co-worker friend, or as she refers to her “my angel on earth”, volunteer to be her living

donor as they were a perfect match. Unfortunately, her case got complicated again and on August 2014 she was told that she was also going to need a kidney and liver transplant. At that time, there was no option but to be added to the list and wait for a donor who was compatible. One of the transplant nurse where Maylen first listed told her she had better odds of winning the lottery because of the chance of a match between two unrelated people is about one in 100,000. About this Maylen recalls “The news about having to get on the list and not get transplanted quickly was tough to deal with. I was told that because of my blood type, O+, my wait would be 3 years+. But I had prayed to God asking Him that if it was His will and that if He needed me here for a longer period of time that I would accept it and wait on the list for a donor.” According to Maylen, the biggest nerve wrecking times that a person on an organ waiting list faces is the uncertainty; not knowing when and if that donor is ever going to come. “It’s also trying to stay positive on those days that you just want to give up and you do not see the light at the end of the tunnel. And mostly trying to keep a good face in front of your family to let them know that everything is going to be ok when you yourself sometimes have doubts.”

BECOMING A DONOR: THE POWER TO DONATE LIVE

Organ donation process begins with a decision of a person who recognizes an opportunity to help others, to give the gift of hope and be part of a miracle for somebody else’s life. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions and myths that refrain people for donating organs and they stay in just this first step while thousands die every year waiting for a donor organ that doesn’t come. Most probably the biggest concern about becoming a donor is the fear that hospital staff won’t work as hard to save donor’s life in case of any emergency as they have a recipient needing those organs. Others think that they are too old to donate, they aren’t in the best of health, rich or famous people go to the top of the list when they need a donor organ, and that families are charged for donating. For those considering to be a living donor, the main fear is thinking that the donor’s lifestyle is going to change if they decide to donate a part of them. That’s why to get educated is so important after feeling the desire to become a donor. Many are surprised to

Maylen Blardonis find out that a living donors can live a normal life after donating, families are not responsible for any medical cost, and only doctors can determine the medical criteria for disqualifying a donor, not necessary their age or medical conditions. Most importantly, doctors value the lives of their patients. Wendy Samaniego, who was Maylen’s friend that volunteer to be her living donor shares about this: “It wasn’t until after making my decision and knowing I was a match that I went in search of feedback and support. I shared my decision with many only to get back some shocking responses. Realizing I didn’t have the answers to many of their questions and how insensitive people can be when they’re uninformed, it drove me to spend weeks doing lots of research. The research served to ease my mind even more and strengthened my belief in that I was doing the right thing and had nothing to fear.” Many potential donors feel motivation when they know the power of their decision. One single person may save up to 8 lives through organ donation and enhance many others through tissue donation. The gift of life through donation may start at any time. The organs that can be donated in living is a kidney, parts of other organs such as the liver, lung, rarely also the pancreas and intestines. From tissue donation anyone can also donate bone

marrow and blood cells as easy as participating in the blood drives that are organized locally. After death a donor can donate the heart, liver, both kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and the small intestines. Tissue that can also be donated include corneas, skin, veins, heart valves, tendons, ligaments and bones that helped people to recover from trauma, bone damage, spinal injuries, burns, hearing impairment and vision loss. Indeed, one single decision has the power to change the life of many as Pope Francis said “Organ donation is a testimony of love for our neighbor”.

HONORING THOSE WHO DECIDE TO DONATE

On December 2014, Maylen received a call from the hospital that there was a potential donor. She was also informed that she was the second on the list but was asked to go to the hospital and wait on standby until it was decided who the recipient would be. Unfortunately, that wasn’t her time yet. On May 7th, 2015, a second call was received. This time she was first on the list. She again ran to the hospital but on her way there, she received a call informing her she needed to wait as the donor’s relatives needed some time to make their decision and wanted to spend more time with their love one. On the following day, Maylen was told that the surgery was not going to be possible as the relatives were not ready to make a decision. This was a devastating moment, for the second time but when all hope seemed to be lost, Maylen received a third call, just one day after. “It was almost unbelievable. Our prayers were heard”, she recalls. The call had arrived just 30 minutes after a close friend of her had done a heartfelt prayer to God for Maylen. She ran to the hospital and this time she successfully went through the surgery where she received a liver and a kidney at Cleveland Clinic and where Dr. Andreas Tzakis was her surgeon. When thinking back about all that happened and how the family of her donor had to make a hard decision Maylen shares: “I often think of the decision that the family had to make to decide to donate at the same time of dealing with the imminent loss of a loved one. When I received the call my first instinct was to start crying and it was not because I was happy I was getting transplanted, but because I knew that someone was returning to be with God and the family was going to have to go through that grieve.” Mariana and Eduardo Ruffini, active members of this community, had to face exactly this kind of grieve when they lost their oldest daughter Agostina in a car accident 4 years ago. During her life, Agostina was always willing to share her love, time, and talents to help others at all times, and especially those in most need. It was her unselfish heart the main motivation for her parents to make the decision to bring life to others through donating her organs. “It was a very hard moment when we received the news about her passing. We felt sad and disoriented, but immediately we thought about her generosity, her solidarity, and willingness to give to others what she

Maylen Blardonis with Dr. Andreas Tzakis, Director of the Miami Transplant Institute had without asking, that we felt motivated to make the decision and we will do it again the same way she would have done it, with love and without hesitation”. Thanks to Agostina’s parent decision, 4 people were able to continue living by receiving her organs- corneas, lungs, kidneys, liver, and heart. As Maylen says “There are no words that I can honestly say to understand what my donor’s family is going thru nor do I think it is right for me to thank them for my life. What I do know is that their loss pains me but I do want them to know is that her soul is with God but her body parts are still here on earth living inside of each person they blessed when they made the decision to donate. I do not see my donor as being gone but as someone that continues to live inside of me. I am blessed for the opportunity from her family to allow me to be that person. I am eternally grateful and honor to have her living inside of me.” For Maylen as for thousands of people that have been in the same situation, their donors are “as an angel who dying made a huge impact on others.” That’s why she takes the opportunity on National Donor Day to thanks courageous people such as Wendy Samaniego, Mariana and Eduardo Ruffini, and future organ donors for the gift of love to others. She encourages those interested to become one. “As someone who was a recipient of two organs and even blood transfusions, I would say a huge THANK YOU to those thinking to be a donor. Anyone can find themselves needing to be in the transplant list. A medical condition or an accident can put you on that list. If you want to receive, be also willing to give.”

HOPE FOR THOSE WHO ARE STILL WAITING

Nowadays, almost a year after her transplant, Maylen enjoys a normal life. She is able to do things she never

thought she would have the opportunity to do again. She feels blessed to have been guided by a great team of doctors and nurses who helped her go through this process, her family and friend, and more importantly, her donor. Maylen’s testimony of success, as many others, is a living example of faith and hope for those who are currently waiting for a transplant. It is surely a very challenging time with high and low days, but as Maylen advises: “Try to stay positive and when those negative days hit you, pick yourself up and know that everything will be alright.” It is also very important to have a strong support group and friends to walk along with, through this journey as she also pointed out: “Some people will disappear from your life when you go through this process but those that remain, and those that come in, are the ones that truly are your friends and will be there for you in the challenging moments you will face.” Finally, she advises: “Don’t give up. Always stay in faith, be positive and be thankful for those friends that pray with you and stay with you at your darkest moment. Everything eventually has a way of working itself out.” Considering to be a donor is the first step to help those who are in the list to keep their hopes up. There are plenty of websites and local institutes to contact and get more information. A good starting point could be www. donatelife.com , www.unos.org or visiting the Transplant Department of Jackson Memorial Hospital, the University of Miami Tissue Bank or Cleveland Clinic Transplant Unit. These institutions have dedicated staff members who are willing to speak to possible donors and provide them guidance so they can say as Wendy Samaniego “Knowing that I can give someone the gift of a second life is beyond rewarding and the biggest blessing I’ve ever been granted.”

• More than 132,000 men, women and children currently need lifesaving organ transplants. • Every 10 minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. • Sadly, an average of 21 people die each day because the organs they need are not donated in time. • In 2015, more than 8,500 deceased donors made possible approximately 24,000 organ transplants. In addition, there were nearly 6,000 transplants from living donors. • 90% of Americans say they support donation, but only 30% know the essential steps.

14 de febrero: Día Nacional del Donante Un regalo de Amor a los Demás By Grecia Romero

a esperada celebración del Día de San Valentín, o el “Día del Amor y la Amistad”, hace de febrero un mes muy especial. Es práctica común que parejas y amigos demuestren su cariño mediante el intercambio de regalos sencillos como flores, tarjetas y chocolates, o con actos simples de apreciación. Lo que no es tan conocido es que el 14 de febrero es también una fecha muy especial para aquellos que han recibido el regalo más valioso de sus vidas; el tipo de regalo que siempre atesorarán como un recordatorio del amor puro pues gracias a él continúan sus vidas: un órgano. El Día Nacional del Donante es el momento para reconocer a aquellos que han decidido regalar vida a través de donar un órgano, a aquellos que han recibido una donación, quienes están actualmente en espera o los que no pudieron recibir un órgano a tiempo. Es también el momento para informarse, convertirse en donante y cambiar la vida de alguien para siempre como fue el caso de Maylen Blardonis cuya historia es contada en este artículo.

NECESITANDO UN ÓRGANO

Maylen nació con una condición hereditaria llamada Enfermedad del Riñón Poliquístico (PKD, por sus siglas en inglés). Quien hereda la enfermedad nace con estos quistes y a media que va creciendo, los quistes crecer también hasta el punto de afectar la función normal de los riñones, obligando a la persona a necesitar diálisis y posteriormente un trasplante para vivir. La enfermedad de Maylen iba desarrollándose y ella sostenía la esperanza de no llegar a requerir diálisis o incluso trasplante. Pero desafortunadamente, en junio de 2014 uno de los quistes estalló causando daños irreversibles en el riñón, teniendo que ser añadida a la lista de espera de trasplante. Ella recuerda: “El pensar que todavía tenía mi función renal y que podía ser trasplantada sin necesidad de estar en diálisis hizo que la noticia de estar en la lista no me afectara tanto. Lo que realmente me afectó fue saber que mis riñones habían crecido al punto que tendrían que ser removidos antes de ser trasplantada. Esto significaba estar en diálisis, lo que nunca había deseado”. El temido día llegó el 23 de febrero 2014 cuando el Dr. Gaetano Ciancio, Director del Instituto de Trasplante de Miami, realizó la nefrectomía removiendo ambos riñones. Originalmente sólo necesitaba un trasplante de riñón, y Maylen se sentía bendecida de tener una ex compañera y amiga de trabajo, su “ángel en la tierra” como ella le llama,

que había decidido donarle uno de sus riñones siendo totalmente compatible con ella. Desafortunadamente, su caso se complicó de nuevo y en agosto 2014 le dieron la noticia que además de trasplante de riñón, también necesitaría un hígado. En ese momento, no había más remedio que ser añadida a la lista de nuevo y esperar un donante compatible. Una de las enfermeras de trasplante del hospital donde Maylen estaba en espera le dijo que tenía mejores probabilidades de ganar la lotería que de conseguir donante, ya que los chances de encontrar a alguien compatible sin ser familiar es uno de cada 100.000. En este punto Maylen recuerda “La noticia de tener que entrar en la lista y no ser trasplanta rápidamente fue muy dura. Me dijeron que por mi tipo de sangre, O+, mi espera sería de más de 3 años. Pero yo había orado a Dios pidiéndole que si era su voluntad y que si Él me necesitaba aquí, yo lo aceptaría y esperaría pacientemente por un donante”. Por su propia experiencia Maylen puede decir que el mayor reto de afrontar para quien está en lista de espera, es la incertidumbre de no saber cuánto hay que esperar o si el donante realmente va a aparecer. “También es un reto mantener una actitud positiva en los días que uno quiere darse por vencido y no se ve la luz al final del túnel. Y sobre todo, tratar de mantener una buena cara delante de la familia para asegurarles que todo va a estar bien, cuando uno mismo en el fondo tiene dudas”.

SER DONANTE: EL PODER DE REGALAR VIDA

El proceso de donación de órganos comienza con la decisión de una persona de ayudar a los demás, dando el regalo de la esperanza y milagro en la vida de otro. Tristemente, la gran cantidad de ideas erróneas y mitos que existen en torno a la donación de órganos impide que muchos potenciales donantes se registren, mientras que miles de personas mueren cada año a la espera de un órgano que nunca llega. La preocupación más común es el temor de que el personal médico descuide el salvar las vidas de los donantes registrados en caso de emergencia, ya que tienen un destinatario para sus órganos. Otros piensan que son demasiado mayores para donar, que no están en la mejor condición de salud, que personas adineradas o famosas son los que encabezan las listas de espera, o

que las familias de los donantes pagan por donar. Para aquellos que consideran ser donantes en vida, el principal temor es pensar que su estilo de vida va a cambiar si donan parte de sus órganos. Es por eso que informarse es el siguiente paso importante después de sentir el deseo de ser donante. Muchos se sorprenden al descubrir que un donante vivo puede llevar una vida normal después de la donación, que las familias no son responsables de costos médicos, y sólo los doctores pueden determinar los criterios para descalificar a alguien, no su edad o condición médica. Lo más importante de todo, los médicos valoran cada vida de sus pacientes. Wendy Samaniego, la amiga de Maylen que voluntariamente iba a ser su donante en vida añade sobre este aspecto: “No fue sino hasta después de tomar mi decisión y saber que éramos compatibles que fui en busca de información y apoyo. Compartí mi decisión con muchos y recibí respuestas sorprendentes. El darme cuenta que no tenía las respuestas a muchas de sus preguntas y ver cómo la gente puede ser insensible cuando están mal informadas, me llevó a pasar semanas de investigación. Esto me sirvió para conseguir información muy útil, confirmar aún más que estaba haciendo lo correcto y no tenía nada que temer.” Muchos potenciales donantes sienten motivación al conocer el poder de su decisión. Una sola persona puede salvar hasta 8 vidas a través de la donación de órganos y mejorar muchos otros a través de la donación de tejidos. El don de la vida a través de la donación puede comenzar en cualquier momento. Los órganos que pueden ser donados incluso en vida son: un riñón, partes de órganos como el hígado, el pulmón, rara vez también el páncreas y los intestinos. A partir de la donación de tejidos cualquiera también puede donar médula ósea y células sanguíneas de forma tan fácil como participar en las campañas de

donación que se organizan a nivel local. Después de la muerte, se puede donar el corazón, hígado, los dos riñones, pulmones, páncreas e intestino delgado. Los tejidos que también pueden ser donados incluyen córneas, piel, venas, válvulas cardiacas, tendones, ligamentos y huesos que pueden ayudar a personas a recuperarse de un trauma, daño óseo, lesiones de la médula, quemaduras, pérdida de audición y deterioro de la visión. Como se ve, una sola decisión tiene el poder de cambiar la vida de muchos como dice el Papa Francisco: “La donación de órganos es un testimonio de amor al prójimo”.

Se siente bendecida de haber sido guiada por un excelente equipo de médicos y enfermeras que la ayudaron en el proceso, su familia y amigos, y lo más importante, su donante. El testimonio de Maylen, como muchos otros, es un ejemplo vivo de la fe y la esperanza para aquellos que actualmente están a la espera de un trasplante. Sin duda, es un momento muy difícil con días buenos y malos, pero como aconseja Maylen: “Trate de mantener una actitud positiva y cuando esos días negativos le golpeen, levántese con la confianza que todo va a estar bien”. También es muy importante contar con un grupo de apoyo y amigos que lo acompañen en este viaje: “Algunas personas tal vez no estén con usted durante este proceso, pero los que se queden y los que vengan, son los que realmente son sus amigos y estarán allí en los momentos difíciles”. Por último Maylen aconseja: “No se rinda. Mantenga la fe, sea positivo y agradecido por esos amigos que rezan con usted y permanecen a su lado en los momentos más oscuros. En su debido tiempo todo estará en su lugar”. Ser donante es el primer paso para animar y mantener viva la esperanza de quienes esperan. No tema informarse en sitios web e institutos locales; un buen punto de partida podría ser www.donatelife.com, www.unos.org o visitar el Departamento de Trasplantes del Hospital Jackson Memorial, el Banco de Tejidos de la Universidad de Miami, o la Unidad de Trasplante de Cleveland Clinic. Estas instituciones cuentan con personal capacitado para orientar a los posibles donantes al punto que puedan decir como Wendy Samaniego: “Saber que puedo dar a alguien el regalo de una segunda vida es la recompensa y la bendición más grande de mi vida”.

On Valentine’s Day

Common but not so ordinary Loves “Valentine’s Day” reminds us that love is above everything. Valentine’s Day” is a traditional celebration in which dates, couples in love or spouses express their mutual love or tenderness. It is celebrated on February 14th, which is Saint Valentine’s Day. In almost every country they call it “Lovers Day”. Cupid is one of the symbols representing Valentine’s Day, it is known to be a winged boy, armed with bow and arrows, which he shoots to both gods and humans, making them fall deeply in love. On occasions, he is blind folded symbolizing the fact that love is blind. Even though there are hundreds of historic and famous couples we may recall on this particular day, the truest loves are the common ones, the ones we witness on the streets everyday, those by which songs are inspired, the love of our friends and family, the love that makes us laugh and cry, in other words those common relationships that are not as ordinary, as they are the real love stories.

SHE TOOK THE INITIATIVE

The love story of Luzpilar Medina and Juan Felipe Ospina started on the early 90’s and was marked by distance. They met in Medellin, a Colombian city where Juan Felipe lived. She is also Colombian and at the time was visiting her family on vacation, as she lived in New York City. Their first encounter was at the Boy/Girl Scouts group they belonged to. They started a strong friendship, which was marked by the passing of her father, when for the first time Juan Felipe demonstrated his sense of friendship, solidarity and devotion to Luzpilar. For years, this friendship, which soon turned into romance, was kept through letters and summer vacations, when she travelled to Medellin to visit Juan. Nevertheless, distance ended up having its way, and the young couple stopped communicating and finally split up…yet not for ever. During their lives apart, she had a relationship which although short, left her with a child. The years went by, she stayed in New York City while he in Medellin, but one day everything changed. Luzpilar recognized in her memories her true love and went back to Medellin looking for him. They had lost all contact, so she engaged in the task of looking down the phone book for every Juan Felipe Ospina she could find. “There were 15 in all and I called each and every one, until I found him and you know what?

It wasn’t easy, he complained that I had ended the relationship, but the important part was that he had not forgotten me”. Little by little, they rebuild the relationship and once again had to face the moment of truth: she had to return to New York City while he had to stay in Medellin, so she did not hesitate and said: “well let’s get married and come back with me”. And that is what they did, today Juan Felipe and Luzpilar have been married for 15 years, they have two daughters, plus her first born who is now also his, and they kept all the letters from the beginning of their love tale.

ETCHED IN MY MIND

During the 90’s, Cristina was a flight attendant, and it was because of this job that she met the love of her life: Alberto Orso. She was in Italy strolling along the “Foro Romano” with her friends, unaware that at that same place and time the man who later became her husband and father of her children was also there. The truth is that this trip to Italy was one of many that Cristina made because of her work, and so was the trip she took to Los Angeles the following year, when a very close friend of hers asked her to deliver a package to another friend that lived in the city. Cristina made the delivery and met this man, an Argentine like her, with whom she shared a pleasant time. She returned to Los Angeles because of her work and again she carried a package for “the friend of her friend”. This time, the conversation extended, and while talking about trips and travelling they realized they were in Italy at the same time, until he finally said, “I have you recorded on video. You were dressed in beige shorts and sandals.” Hearing these words,

Cristina recalls a man fully dressed in blue that had unconsciously stuck in her memory. “He checked the video and indeed it was me. When I got to my hotel room, I found a stuffed animal, a bouquet of flowers and a note that read: You will forever be etched in my mind. When I returned to Argentina, I looked for the video that one of my friends had recorded during the trip, and he was also there. I thought: This man was sent by God”. Cristina was not mistaken; they began a beautiful romance, which culminated marriage. They have been married for 23 years and have two children. CUPID… OR SHOULD WE SAY “LADY” CUPID We will begin this story with its real star, Cupid… or should we say “Lady” Cupid: Ana Cristina, Jesica’s best friend, a diligent, joyful and pretty young lady, who had devoted herself to her studies and caring for her disabled mother, never imagined meeting the love of her life on a blind date. Ana Cristina insisted that Jesica had to date someone because she was too young to be alone. “One day she called me to ask if she could give my phone to a guy who lived on her same residential complex. She assured me he was a fantastic person, and that she had learned he was a serious and responsible man. She insisted so much that I agreed.” A baffled Camilo received the phone number that Ana Cristina “subtly” provided him. He thought about it for several days before calling, until he decided to do so out of embarrassment for having to admit to Ana Cristina that he had not called. To Camilo’s surprise, the person on the other end of the phone was not a hopeless loner, but sweet Jesica, with whom he held a harmonious and pleasant conversation, and whom he asked out. “It was our blind date and it worked! We began being friends, then started dating and got married in 2015. Now that I think about it, our story began with a happy ending.” THE REPENTED PRIEST This story takes place in the early 60’s in Mayari, a Cuban village. Albita lived in this small town, she was a nice, educated young piano virtuoso, from a good family, and she always, always, always went to Mass, so who else was she going to fall in love with but with the priest.

Juan had arrived to the parish. He was a pleasant young man, 16 years her senior, with a very convincing speech and a cheerful spirit. Because of their mutual religious interest, Juan and Alba began a beautiful friendship that ended up being something more, a great scandal: “What is that shameless priest doing with Albita!” was the comment of the town. At the time this was just too much: she, was a young woman from a rich and conservative family, while he was a priest, who on top of this was much older than her. However, gossip was not as strong as their love and Juan, who was truly in love, travelled to Rome and resigned from his priesthood in order to have a loving future with Alba. But because this story unfolded at the beginning of the Cuban Revolution and the arrival of Fidel Castro to the island, Alba had to flee with her family to Spain, while John went to Central America until, months later, he was able to save the money he needed to bring Alba to where he was. They finally met again in Honduras where they were married with God’s blessing. For many years they lent their services to religious congregations carrying the message of the Catholic Church and guiding young couples on the importance of family life, until they reached Venezuela, where they settled and had two daughters.

All these stories show us that love definitely governs our lives and it’s Cupid who many times marks our destiny in such unexpected and wonderful ways.

Jennifer Chacón lived in Caracas. She was in a romantic relationship for several years until she decided to end it. She was single for some time until her mother and grandmother started to worry, “this girl is going to become a spinster” they thought, and even though this was not a concern for Jennifer it was for her family. Mother and grandmother decided to fix the problem and signed Jennifer up on a dating site on the Internet. “They filled the application, downloaded pictures, and wrote about the things I liked, every thing. At the end, they told me about it, and gave me the username and password they had created for me. I never checked the site, so my mother started to insist that I should check it and find out what was going on”. Finally, one day Jennifer received a request from a Michael Burke. “An American who I happened to find attractive, despite my cousin saying he had the look of a crazy American guy. We started to write and share online, until we decided to meet at a neutral ground: Puerto Rico”.

Surprisingly for Jennifer they spent some excellent days together and started a beautiful relationship, so a few months later, Michael travelled to Venezuela to meet her grandmother and brother. They got engaged and flew to London, where Jennifer’s mother lived at that time, to formalize their relationship. They had their civil marriage in 2010 and the religious ceremony in 2011. Today, they live in Boynton Beach; they have a four-year-old boy and are expecting a second child. Oh… this story has an additional bonus: Jennifer’s aunt and Michael’s best man, who met at the wedding, also fell in love, got married and now have a two year old son.

Amores comunes y no tan corrientes El “Día de los Enamorados” nos recuerda que el amor va por encima de todo. Si nos vamos a la historia vemos como, a través de los años, son muchas las parejas que han luchado contra los tabú sociales, las creencias religiosas, los conflictos políticos y las distancias geográficas para, finalmente, unir sus vidas By Edda Pujadas @epujadas

l “Día de San Valentín” es una celebración tradicional en la que los novios, enamorados o esposos se expresan su amor o cariño mutuamente. Se celebra el 14 de febrero, onomástico de San Valentín. En la mayoría de los países se le llama el “Día de los Enamorados”. Cupido es uno de los símbolos de San Valentín, se le conoce como un niño alado y armado con arco y flechas que son disparadas a dioses y humanos, provocando que se enamoren profundamente. En ocasiones, lleva también los ojos vendados, para evidenciar que el amor es ciego. Si bien hay cientos de parejas históricas y famosas a las que podríamos evocar en este día, los amores más reales son los cotidianos, los que vemos a diario en las calles, los que se narran en las canciones de amor, los de nuestros amigos y familiares, aquellos que nos hacen reír y llorar, en definitiva, esas relaciones comunes y no tan corrientes, que son los que protagonizan las verdaderas historias de amor.

ELLA TOMO LA INICIATIVA

La historia de amor de Luzpilar Medina y Juan Felipe Ospina comenzó a principios de los ’90 y estuvo marcada por la distancia. Se conocieron en Medellín, ciudad colombiana en la que Juan Felipe vivía y a la que ella, quien es también oriunda de Colombia, fue de vacaciones a ver a su familia, pues residía en Nueva York. Su primer encuentro fue en un grupo de Boys Scout al que ambos pertenecían y fue cuando se inició una fuerte amistad, marcada con el fallecimiento del padre de ella, cuando Juan Felipe demostró por primera vez su compañerismo, solidaridad y entrega a Luzpilar. Por años, esta amistad, que pronto se convirtió en romance, se mantuvo a través de cartas y de las vacaciones de verano, cuando ella viajaba a Medellín para ver a Juan. Sin embargo, la distancia terminó haciendo de las suyas y la joven parejita dejó de comunicarse y

terminaron separándose…pero no para siempre. Durante sus vidas separadas, ella tuvo una relación que si bien terminó pronto, le dejó un hijo. Así, los años continuaron pasando, mientras ella seguía en Nueva York y él en Medellín, hasta que un día todo cambió. Luzpilar reconoció en los recuerdos al amor de su vida y regresó a Medellín a buscarlo. Habían perdido todo contacto, así que ella se dio a la tarea de buscar en la guía telefónica a todos los Juan Felipe Ospina. “Había 15 y los llamé a todos, hasta que lo encontré y saben qué?, no fue fácil, pues él me reclamó que me hubiese alejado, pero no me había olvidado, eso era lo importante”. Poco a poco, retomaron la relación y de nuevo llegó el momento difícil: ella tenía que regresar a Nueva York y él tenía que permanecer en Medellín, así que ella no lo pensó dos veces y le dijo: “pues casémonos y vengase conmigo”. Y así fue, hoy Juan Felipe y Luzpilar tiene 15 años casados, dos hijas, el primero hijo de ella que ahora es de ambos y además, guardan todas las cartas del inicio de su historia de amor.

Jennifer Chacón vivía en Caracas y sostuvo por varios años una relación amorosa a la que decidió poner fin. Estuvo sin pareja por algún tiempo hasta que su mamá y su abuela empezaron a preocuparse, “esta muchacha se nos va a quedar solterona”, pensaban y aunque esto no era una preocupación para Jennifer, si lo era para su familia. Madre y abuela decididas a ponerle solución al asunto, inscribieron a Jennifer en una página de citas por internet. “Llenaron toda la aplicación, pusieron mis fotos, las cosas que me gustaban, todo. Al final, me lo contaron y me dieron el usuario y la contraseña que me habían creado. Como nunca revisaba la página, mi mamá empezó a insistirme a que me metiera a ver qué pasaba”. Finalmente, un día Jennifer recibió una solicitud de un tal Michael Burke. “Un americano que me pareció atractivo, a pesar de que mi primo decía que tenía cara de gringo loco. Empezamos a escribirnos y compartir por internet, hasta que decidimos encontrarnos en un lugar neutral: Puerto Rico”. Para sorpresa de Jennifer pasaron unos excelentes días juntos y dieron inicio a una bella relación, así que a los pocos meses, Michael viajo a Venezuela

a conocer a la abuela y al hermano de ella. Se comprometieron y fueron a Londres, donde vivía la mamá de ella para aquel entonces, para formalizar la relación. En el 2010 se casaron por el civil y en el 2011 se unieron religiosamente. Hoy tienen un niño de cuatro años, están esperando su segundo bebé y viven en Boynton Beach. Ah… esta historia tiene un bono adicional: la tía de Jennifer y el padrino de Michael, quien se conocieron en la boda de ambos, también se enamoraron, se casaron y tienen un hijo de dos años.

En los ’90, Cristina era aeromoza, trabajo que le permitió conocer al hombre de su vida: Alberto Orso. Ella estaba en Italia y paseaba con sus amigas por el Foro Romano, sin saber que en ese mismo lugar y en ese mismo momento estaba quien se convertiría en su esposo y padre de sus hijos. La verdad que ese viaje a Italia, fue uno de los tantos que Cristina hacía por trabajo, así como lo fue el viaje que realizó a Los Angeles al año siguiente, cuando un gran amigo suyo le pidió que le entregara un paquete a un compañero que vivía en esta ciudad. Cristina cumplió con la entrega y conoció a este hombre, argentino igual que ella, con quien compartió un rato ameno. Regresó a Los Angeles por trabajo y también volvió a llevar un encargo para “el amigo de su amigo”. Esta vez, la conversación se alarga y hablando de viajes y paseos se dan cuenta que estuvieron en Italia en la misma fecha, hasta que él le dice, “yo te tengo grabada en un video. Estabas vestida con uno short beige y una sandalias”. Al escuchar estas palabras, Cristina recuerda a un hombre completamente vestido de azul que había quedado en su memoria inconscientemente”. “Revisó el video y efectivamente era yo. Cuando llegué a la habitación de mi hotel, encontré un peluche, un ramo de flores y un nota que decía “Vivirás por siempre grabada en mí”. Cuando regresé a Argentina, busque el video que una de sus amigas había grabado del viaje y él también estaba ahí. Pensé: este hombre me lo mando Dios”. Cristina no se equivocó, iniciaron un hermoso romance que terminó en un matrimonio que ya tiene 23 años y dos hijos.

Finalmente, se re – encontraron en Honduras donde se casaron bajo la bendición de Dios. Por muchos años prestaron sus servicios a congregaciones religiosas llevando el mensaje de la Iglesia Católica y orientando a jóvenes parejas sobre la importancia de la vida familiar, hasta que llegaron a Venezuela, donde se radicaron y tuvieron dos hijas. Todas estas historias nos demuestran que el amor es definitivamente quien gobierna nuestras vidas y que Cupido es quien marca, muchas veces de formas inesperadas y maravillosas, nuestro destino.

he Key Club at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH) will be sponsored by the Biscayne Bay Chapter of Kiwanis International. The announcement was made by Nellie Hernandez, President-Elect of the Kiwanis Club of Biscayne Bay, who is spearheading the RRDSH Key Club charter creation process, along with Ms. Ashley Castellanos, Activities Director and Ms. Marysu Correa, sponsor teacher at RRDSH. They will provide mentorship, support and much needed funds for the operation of this student organization, focused on developing service projects to benefit children in the community. Established in 1915, the Kiwanis International Organization is an entirely volunteer-run movement that exists in more than 80 nations, and every year its members devote more than 18.5 million hours to complete nearly 150,000 service projects. Nellie Hernández, Presidente Entrante del Kiwanis Club de Biscayne Bay, quien está liderando la incorporación del RRDSH Key Club, junto con la directora de actividades de RRDSH la Sra. Ashley Castellanos y la Sra. Marysu Correa, profesora asesora del Key Club. Muchas de las actividades del club de Biscayne se orientan a ayudar los niños en zonas aledañas menos privilegiadas, como Allapatah o Little Haití, pues las actividades de cada club Kiwanis siempre se circunscriben a beneficiar a la comunidad más cercana geográficamente. El enfoque principal busca beneficiar a los niños, pues el lema de la organización

es “Servir a los niños del mundo.” “Aun cuando existen muchos grupos Kiwanis en Miami, sabemos que no existe un grupo en Doral. Pensamos que al establecerse presencia en RRDSH con el Key Club, al ser Doral una comunidad en desarrollo, aparecerá la necesidad y deseo de crear un Kiwanis en Doral.” En 2004 hubo un intento de crear la organización en Doral, pero ese grupo está inactivo desde 2006. Otros grupos Kiwanis han ayudado a crear clubs en Doral Academy High School y en Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center. Sin embargo, no había presencia Kiwanis en RRDSH y es allí donde el apoyo de Kiwanis-Biscayne ha sido clave para la creación y operación del Key Club en esa escuela. Se llaman Key Clubs a las organizaciones que forman parte de Kiwanis International y están compuestas por estudiantes de secundaria. La mayoría de las actividades se enfocan en apoyo a la infancia, pero siempre en función de las necesidades de la comunidad. Apoyando al Key Club en RRDSH estamos ayudando a crear un grupo que estará en posición de ayudar en cualquier necesidad que exista en su comunidad.” Para iniciar la operación como un Capitulo Oficial de Kiwanis International, el Key Club en RRDSH ha enviado ya la documentación necesaria a las oficinas principales de Kiwanis, todo con la ayuda y guía de la Sra. The organization at RRDSH is called the Key Club, and will be a chapter of the branch of the Kiwanis International movement that works with High School level students to benefit their communities, through volunteer projects. At primary school levels Kiwanis sponsors the K-Kids clubs; Builders Clubs are for middle schoolers, Key Clubs for teens, CKI for college students and Aktion Clubs for adults with disabilities. It allows all people to find the chance to use their talents and have a great service impact on their communities through volunteer work. “The advantage of the Kiwanis Club is that the activities are depending on what the community needs and desires are. Most Kiwanis activities are geared towards helping children, but it depends on what the community desires. The luncheon celebrated on January 28th, 2016 marked the 8th year anniversary of the Doral Chamber Of Commerce and promoted Miami Cruise Month which takes place during the entire month of January. After addressing the crowd which included city of Doral business owners, city officials and local press representatives; Manny Sarmiento went on and introduced the guest of honor as well as commencement speaker, University of Florida graduate William D Talbert III.

Full of accolades William D. Talbert III is a man worthy of an honorary introduction. Talbert has been the CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau for 9 years and has been largely responsible for making Miami now the #1 cruise capital in the world. Talbert touched upon the subject on the huge role that the city of Doral plays in the cruise industry as it is home to the top cruise line headquarters in the world such as Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. The subject of Cuba’s newly restored relationship with the U.S. did not go unmentioned as Talbert made sure to spotlight that the end of the embargo could potentially lead to an ever higher amount of tourists coming into Miami from all over the world that could embark on a cruise ship to Caribbean island from Port Of Miami. Talbert finished up his speech to a standing ovation from the guests in hand at the luncheon. Before stepping off stage CEO of the Doral Chamber of Commerce Manny Sarmiento presented Talbert with a certificate of appreciation award for all his efforts that he has put on in making sure to put the city of Doral high on the map.

After the conclusion of his speech the guests, who where all mostly members of the Doral Chamber Of Commerce took part in a networking reception where they had the opportunity to chat and exchange business cards with other entrepreneurs, organizations and business owners that are based in the city of Doral and the Miami area. The luncheon ended with a delicious bang as the invites were treated to a delightful three-course lunch by the Carnival executive chefs and a musical performance by the Carnival crewmembers. The extremely successful event helped promote future plans for the cities tourism in what’s to come in the year 2016. uchas veces nos encontramos que nuestros hijos nos piden algo material como “premio” de notas. Incluso nos argumentan que a sus amigos los premiaron con calificaciones más bajas que las de ellos. Actualmente los niños y jóvenes nos exigen cosas materiales, confundiendo la riqueza material con la calidad de vida y los lleva a tener una actitud de creer que lo merecen todo sin tomar en cuenta las necesidades o sentimientos de los demás y sin haber hecho poco o ningún esfuerzo para obtener aquello que desean. Esta creencia no solo está relacionado con el pedir aquello que desean, también lo está con las creencias acerca del trabajo, decisiones, consecuencias, respeto hacia otros y hacia sí mismos, el concepto de trabajo en equipo, con el valor de la cooperación y con las relaciones. Y esto tendrá un impacto en el niño en las diferentes etapas de su vida, incluida la adultez. El que crean que lo merecen todo también lleva implícito la creencia que tienen derecho a no hacer ciertas cosas, como trabajar. Cuando esta actitud se sale de control y se convierte en una demanda constante a que todos sus caprichos sean complacidos, no permite que el niño desarrolle su máximo potencial. A pesar de que comúnmente se cree que es un resultado de la cultura consumista en que vivimos, si vemos más detenidamente, es un resultado de la crianza de los padres.

El problema radica cuando los padres compensan la falta de tiempo con cosas materiales, cuando sobreprotegen y no ponen límites (padres permisivos), o bien cuando no permiten que sus hijos experimenten incomodidad cuando se les deja de satisfacer algo que desean (no algo que necesitan) Esta indulgencia los lleva a convertirse en adultos inútiles, poco persistentes en sus trabajos y con la creencia que pueden obtener todo aquello que desean con poco o ningún esfuerzo. Los padres indulgentes y sobreprotectores dan todo a sus hijos, si lloran, inmediatamente les dan aquello que quieren. Con el paso del tiempo, este hábito les roba la oportunidad de sentir la frustración, lidiar con ella y sobre todo impiden que sean ellos, sus

hijos, quienes hagan algo al respecto en lugar de que papá y mamá les resuelva los problemas. Es importante tener en mente la diferencia entre lo que se desea y lo que se necesita: No todo lo que se desea, se necesita., y no todo lo que se necesita, se desea. Cuando esta actitud se comienza a establecer como un hábito en tu hijo, podrás observar que durante los años escolares, comenzarán a presentar actitudes egocéntricas, poca empatía hacia los demás lo que los lleva a tener dificultades sociales, tanto con sus compañeros como con sus maestros. Tendrán la tendencia a meterse en problemas y presentarán un desempeño académico por debajo de sus capacidades. Tendrán dificultad en postergar la gratificación: Todo lo quieren inmediatamente y a su manera. Es importante reconocer que estos errores usualmente se cometen “por amor”, sin embargo, es necesario recordar que la crianza de un hijo conlleva disciplina. Existen 6 tipos de actitudes en niños que se creen merecedores de todo: El niño consentido: los padres les dan todo, generalmente son los mismos padres quienes no pueden decir “NO”. El niño estrella: Estos son los niños talentosos, con mucha capacidad, sin embargo reciben demasiados halagos, y el trato especial en exceso es nocivo. Puede darse el caso de niños que se les felicita por todo y sus habilidades son normales, puede generar una autoestima inflada. El hijo único: Algunos niños desarrollan la creencia que solo ellos son importantes ya que no están forzados a compartir a los padres. El niño voluntarioso: En lugar de sentirse decepcionados y molestos por no obtener aquello que querían, estos chicos y jóvenes presentan una actitud demandante. El niño de la culpa: Estos chicos tienen padres que sienten culpa por no estar con ellos muchos tiempo, o por alguna otra razón, y son los mismos padres quienes creen que le deben muchas cosas. El niño rescatado: Son niños cuyos padres los rescatan de los problemas, pensando que ellos están por encima de cualquier regla impuesta en casa, el colegio o cualquier otro lugar.

USTED COMO PADRE. QUÉ PUEDE HACER?

¡Educa a tus hijos desde pequeños, no esperes

a tener dificultades! Los límites claros y concisos son indispensables. Deben saber quién está a cargo. Inculca el valor del esfuerzo y el trabajo: Que tus hijos sepan que el esfuerzo por lo que quieren les dará mayor satisfacción y disfrutarán aún más aquello que consiguieron: ya sea algo material o unas buenas calificaciones por su estudio a lo largo del año. ¡OJO! Sus buenas calificaciones y la felicitación tuya deben ser su premio, en lugar de llenarlos de cosas de las que perderán interés en pocos días. Al final del camino, los hará adultos responsables. De acuerdo a su edad, es importante que tengan algunas responsabilidades en casa: ayudar a poner la mesa, hacer su cama, etc., esto les ayudará a tener los pies sobre la tierra, a trabajar en equipo, además de aprender cosas que le servirán en su vida adulta. Deja que tus hijos cometan errores (dentro de los parámetros de seguridad y lógicos) y que aprendan a resolverlos por sí mismos. Les ayudará a generar confianza en sí mismos, buena autoestima, mejor habilidad en toma de decisions y diferentes habilidades para resolver problemas. Aprender a decir: “No”, dejar de ceder a todas y cada una de las demandas y deseos de tus hijos. La tolerancia a la frustración les enseñará a luchar y valorar sus logros y aquello que desean. Cuando les des algo especial a tus hijos, ellos deben saber que es una gratificación bien ganada, así lo disfrutarán aún más y atesorarán tu regalo. Dales un buen ejemplo, ellos aprenden más con acciones que con palabras. Darles el crédito y felicitarlos solamente cuando lo merezcan, no hay que idolatrarlos a cada momento, así evitaremos jóvenes y adultos arrogantes y presumidos de habilidades que puedan o no tener.

Cuidado con el robo de identidad impositiva

Ten en cuenta que el IRS no se contactará contigo ni por teléfono, ni por correo electrónico ni por mensaje de texto ni por los medios sociales. Puedes verificar la legitimidad de cualquier comunicado del IRS al llamar al 1-800-829-1040. También recibirás una notificación del IRS si alguien usa tu número del Seguro Social para obtener un empleo y el empleador reporta ese ingreso al IRS usando tu número. La carta indicará que no informaste todas tus ganancias en tu declaración de impuestos. Otra señal de advertencia sería recibir un W-2 o formulario 1099 de un empleador para el que no trabajaste.

Si resultas víctima del robo de identidad impositiva, estas son las medidas que debes tomar: • Comunícate con el IRS de inmediato usando la información de contacto en la notificación que recibiste. Se te pedirá que completes un afidávit de robo de identidad del IRS, el formulario

14039. • Comunícate con tu banco y la compañía emisora de tu tarjeta de crédito y denuncia el fraude ante las agencias crediticias. Solicítale a una agencia crediticia (Experian, TransUnion o Equifax) que coloque una alerta de fraude gratuita y las demás también lo harán. Las alertas de fraude duran 90 días, pero puedes renovarlas. • Accede a tu informe de crédito gratis de las tres agencias crediticias. Pregúntale a la agencia que coloque la alerta de fraude cómo obtener tus informes. • Presenta una denuncia de robo de identidad ante la Comisión Federal de Comercio. Esto ayudará a que la información fraudulenta se elimine de tu informe de crédito y evitará que las compañías intenten cobrar deudas relativas a la actividad fraudulenta. • Haz una denuncia policial. Lleva a la policía el formulario que presentaste ante la Comisión Federal de Comercio.

CONSEJOS PARA EVITAR EL ROBO DE IDENTIDAD IMPOSITIVA

Cada vez es más difícil proteger nuestra identidad, pero estas son algunas medidas que pueden tomar para protegerte a ti y a tu familia: • Monitorea tus informes de crédito. Puedes solicitar informes gratuitos una vez al año de las tres agencias crediticias en www. annualcreditreport.com. • Nunca des tu número del Seguro Social ni ninguna otra información personal a nadie que te llame por teléfono. • Si presentan tu declaración de impuestos

electrónicamente, asegúrate de usar una red inalámbrica privada y protegida. Presentar tu declaración desde tu cafetería local, la biblioteca u otro lugar público no es una buena idea. • Brinda la información a la persona que prepara tu declaración de impuestos cara a cara, para evitar enviar un fax que alguien más puede ver. • Tritura los papeles que contengan información personal confidencial. Con suerte, nunca te enfrentarás al robo de identidad. Asegúrate de proteger tu información personal lo mejor que puedas y de saber qué hacer si resultas ser una víctima. n January 14, 2016, Navy Admiral Kurt W. Tidd assumed command of the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) from Marine General John F. Kelly. Presiding at the changing of the guard ceremony were Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine General Joseph J. Dunford, Jr., and representatives from all the subordinate commands as well as foreign dignitaries and military attachés were also in attendance. Admiral Tidd is a second generation surface warfare officer and Naval Academy graduate whose father and brother also rose to the rank of admiral. He has commanded U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and the 4th Fleet, served on the National Security Council Staff as the Director for Strategic Capabilities Policy, and has also seen combat in the war in Afghanistan. County Commission approves legislation to crack down on human trafficking

he Miami-Dade County Commission on Feb. 2 gave final approval to legislation sponsored by Commissioners Jose “Pepe” Diaz and Sally A. Heyman to crack down on human trafficking by enforcing a recently adopted state law imposing a $500 fine on businesses that fail to post human trafficking public awareness signs at adult entertainment and certain massage or bodywork services establishments. “Human trafficking makes victims of the most vulnerable people in our society, including children, and we must do everything we can to end this heinous form of exploitation in our county and across the state and nation,” Commissioner Diaz said. The public awareness signs, which will appear in English, Spanish and Creole, will state: “If you or someone you know is being forced to engage in an activity and cannot leave — whether it is

prostitution, housework, farm work, factory work, retail work, restaurant work, or any other activity — call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-373-7888 or text INFO or HELP to 233-733 to access help and services. Victims of slavery and human trafficking are protected under United States and Florida Law.” Human trafficking involves the exploitation of men, women and children for forced labor or commercial sex and often subjects them to force, fraud, and coercion. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center, a national hotline funded by the United States Department

of Health and Human Services, received 1,428 phone calls and reported 364 human trafficking cases in 2014 in Florida alone.

ROMEO SANTOS RECIBE LA PRESTIGIOSA CERTIFICACIÓN DE 11X DIAMANTE POR LA RIAA

La asociación norteamericana RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) otorgó a Romeo Santos su prestigioso reconocimiento: 11X Diamante/Latin G&P Program por su álbum Fórmula, Vol 2. Por primera vez, RIAA está incorporando estadísticas de streaming en sus conteos de ventas, una actualización que toma en cuenta la enorme popularidad de El Rey de la Bachata, Romeo Santos en las redes sociales. Fórmula, Vol. 2 fue el único álbum latino entre los 17 que fueron certificados bajo este nuevo esquema. Un disco se hace elegible para esta valiosa presea de Diamante al superar 10 veces Platino, y Fórmula, Vol. 2 ha llegado a 11 veces Platino según las últimas cifras de la RIAA, que asesora las ventas y streaming para la industria de la música en Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico.

Éxito total el Super Evento de Networking organizado por Doral Family Journal

El pasado 4 de febrero tuvo lugar el Super Evento de Networking más grande en la historia de nuestra ciudad y estuvo organizado por Doral Family Journal, en el restaurant Carolina Ale House. El mismo contó con la participación de Doral Business Council, Town of Medley Chamber of Commerce, Doral Chamber of Commerce y Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce. El exitoso evento logró reunir a mas de 450 personas, en el que se dieron cita, oficiales electos, empresarios, organizaciones e instituciones relacionadas con los distintos negocios en la ciudad de Miami.

South Florida Motorcycle Enthusiasts joined Archbishop Thomas Wenski Jan. 31 for his annual Archbishop’s Motorcycle Ride in memory of Rene J. Sardiña president and founder of Chrome Knights Motorcycle Association to raise funds for Catholic Charities’ St. Luke’s Center, which treats people with alcohol and drug addictions. The motorcycle event ride started with 8:30 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doral, continued to the Tiki bar on US 27 Weston and concluded at Peterson’s Harley Davidson North in North Miami that hosts an amazing free BBQ party for all participants. This is the fourth year the Archbishop and Chrome Knights Motorcycle Association has led this fundraising motorcycle ride to benefit St. Luke’s. “In service to one, in service to all”

¿HA ESTADO PENSANDO SOBRE LA PARTE B DE MEDICARE? Por Maria Diaz

INGRESOS MÁS BAJOS PUEDEN SINIFICAR UNA PRIMA MÁS BAJA POR LA PARTE B DE MEDICARE

Si tiene la cobertura de Medicare y paga una prima mensual más alta porque su ingreso es alto, le tenemos buenas noticias que pueden ser de aliento en vista de la situación económica del país. Si ha experimentado una reducción drástica en sus ingresos en general, es posible que el Seguro Social pueda reducir la cantidad de su prima mensual de la Parte B de Medicare. La reducción en ingresos pudo haber sido a causa de cosas como: por matrimonio, un divorcio o anulación de un matrimonio, el fallecimiento del cónyuge, reducción en el número de horas que trabaja, dejar de trabajar, reducción en la cantidad de sus ingresos debido a una pérdida de ingreso de una inversión inmóvil y perdida o reducción de ciertos ingresos de pensiones. Si experimentó alguno de estos cambios, necesitará presentar prueba del cambio y hacernos saber cómo esto redujo sus ingresos. La documentación de estos cambios podría ser un certificado de defunción, una carta de su empleador con referencia a pérdida de empleo o algo parecido. Si presentó una declaración de impuestos para el año en juicio, necesitaremos ver la copia firmada de la declaración de impuestos. Si sus ingresos no cambiarán hasta el próximo año, nos puede proveer una estimación de lo que cree que serán sus ingresos. Una vez nos presente la evidencia del cambio en su estilo de vida y nos muestre prueba o una estimación de la reducción en sus ingresos, el Seguro Social actualizará los registros y si es apropiado, corregiremos la cantidad de su prima mensual de la Parte B de Medicare. Tiene el derecho a solicitar que se tome una decisión nueva pidiendo que usemos una declaración de impuestos más exacta si: • Su declaración de impuestos enmendadas perteneciente al año que usamos para determinar la cantidad de su prima y ésta cambia la cantidad de sus ingresos que contamos; • Nos presenta una prueba concreta de parte del Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS, siglas en inglés) que existe un error en la información de su declaración de impuestos la cual usamos para tomar nuestra decisión; o • Su estado civil, para los efectos de la declaración de impuestos para el año en juicio, era «casado declarando por separado» y no vivió junto con su cónyuge en ningún momento durante se año. i tiene la cobertura de la Parte A de Medicare, pero originalmente optó por no inscribirse en la Parte B de Medicare, ahora tiene la oportunidad de inscribirse en la Parte B. El periodo de inscripción general comenzó el 1º de enero y termina el 31 de marzo. Ahora bien, posiblemente se pregunte: ¿qué es eso de la Parte A o Parte B? y, ¿por qué se inscribiría una persona en una Parte pero no en la otra? Para comenzar, veamos algunos detalles prácticos. La Parte A de Medicare (seguro de hospital) ayuda a pagar los gastos de estadía en el hospital o una institución de enfermería especializada (después de haber estado recluido en un hospital), algunos gastos de servicios de salud en el hogar y cuidado de hospicio. La Parte B de Medicare (seguro médico) ayuda a pagar los honorarios de los servicios prestados por médicos y muchos otros servicios de salud y suministros que el seguro de hospital no cubre. Tan pronto como adquiere el derecho a participar en la Parte A de Medicare, al mismo tiempo tiene la oportunidad de inscribirse en la Parte B por el cual pagaría una prima mensual. Algunas personas optan por no inscribirse en la Parte B porque no quieren pagar una prima mensual o por alguna otra razón. Pero según cambia su necesidad por servicios médicos, sería ventajoso que se inscriba y es por eso que existen periodos de inscripción. Cuando adquiere el derecho a inscribirse en el seguro de hospital (Parte A), tiene un periodo de siete meses (al cual llamamos el periodo de inscripción inicial) durante los cuales puede inscribirse en el seguro médico (Parte B). Una vez el periodo de inscripción inicial ha caducado, entonces solamente se puede inscribir durante los periodos de inscripción general. El periodo de inscripción general de la Parte B de Medicare ocurre todos los años entre el 1º de enero y el 31 de marzo. Su cobertura toma efecto en julio del año en que se inscribe. Pero acuérdese que, para la mayoría de las personas, la prima mensual aumenta un 10 de por ciento por cada periodo de 12 meses por los cuales tuvo derecho a la cobertura de la Parte B pero optó por no inscribirse. Así que, si tiene la cobertura de la Parte A de Medicare y está pensando en inscribirse en la Parte B, ahora es el momento de hacerlo.
