City of Doral Parks and Recreation Department Events

he award-winning Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Doral is composed of a team of twenty-four members, including Events and Programs Coordinators, Park Managers and Park Aides, led by Director Ms. Barbara Hernández; with the support of a squad of providers and volunteers, they work tirelessly to bring high quality recreation services to Doral residents. When the more than 30,000 attendees to the past Fourth of July celebration at Doral Central Park looked to the sky in awe to the beautiful “America through the Decades” fireworks display, it was the culminating moment of almost a year of hard work and preparation for the Parks and Recreations Department. However, not many are aware of the long hours and details involved in providing the community of those moments - extraordinary during the events and ordinary in the daily regular operation - that take place at the six parks located in the City of Doral: Doral Central Park, Doral Meadows, Morgan Levy, Veterans, Trails and Tails and Downtown Doral.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST INVESTMENTS OF THE CITY

The Parks system in Doral has evolved rapidly since incorporation to catch up with the increasing demands of the population. From a small playground on the current land of Morgan Levy Park to the six state-of-the art facilities currently

in operation and several more to come, the Parks in Doral are the favorite part of the city for all residents, from young children to seniors. With an allocation for 2014-2015 of $12,240,742.00, Parks receives the second largest portion of the City’s general budget (21.21%, surpassed only by the Police Department), to

be invested on recreational programs for the enjoyment and enhancement of the quality of life of citizens. It is expected that it will increase for next budget session, given that there are three more parks under development: the North Park, located in 74th Street and 97th avenue; the 114th Avenue Park that will be the largest yet, including community center, covered courts and many other facilities. Also in store is the initial design phase for the long awaited Doral Aquatic Facility.

MANY REASONS TO CELEBRATE

In the month of June, the City of Doral was named Playful City USA for the sixth consecutive year by KABOOM!®, a national non-profit organization that honors the commitment of cities towards the promotion of opportunities and spaces for their residents to play and stay healthy. This recognition adds to the many others the Department has received over the years, including the Excellence Award and “It Starts in the Parks” from Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA). The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) declared July as Parks and Recreation month and it was celebrated with great success in Doral with the biggest and most important event of the year, the Independence Day Spectacular.

A YEAR-LONG EVENT PREPARATION

“We get in contact with the vendors as early as January. We want to find the best for our community and we have to start booking early”, explains Jessica Roth, Doral Parks and Recreation Special Events Coordinator. The Fourth of July is “the city’s largest and most attended event and we improve every year” says Roth; To make it the best possible, the largest allocation for events in the budget is for this celebration. According to the budget, an amount of $90,500 was reserved to cover the expenses of this event, such as stage, lights, entertainment and the most important part: the fireworks. Although Parks and Recreation spearheads the coordination, many people are involved for the success of public events that take place in Doral. “The Police department for safety; Public works to make sure the area is ready for the event; Building for any kind of permitting and safety of the structures; Code compliance is present to ensure

everybody is following code. Public Affairs help us with the marketing and promotion; there are a lot of people that have their hands in the pot. It is pretty widely spread” says Roth. Recurrent events’ preparation start almost as it has finished the prior year. “We do a recap on how the event went and see what worked and didn’t and come up with a game plan with changes and ideas.” They take into account the opinions and feedback of the public in attendance. They run surveys during the events and also afterwards and are open to any comments and opinions the residents send them through email, phone, social media or the city’s website, to make improvements for next year. Once goals are set and deadlines are stablished, all event teams from the Parks department get to work to contact vendors, book entertainment and contact community organizations that want to participate. Regular team meetings are held to verify the check lists and make sure that “everybody is confirmed and involved; we get together and set all logistics.” Roth explains that for the biggest events, the logistics, set up and reception of deliveries start as early as five days prior. “The actual day it all goes pretty fast. It is the one when all our staff is involved handling safety, parking, emergencies, making sure everything is running smoothly and when it ends we stay and pick up and start to get ready for next year.” With that many people involved, it requires very strict coordination and attention to the details to make events a success; that is what makes Doral Parks and Recreations events so special and unforgettable for the residents. “Anytime we have an opportunity to bring all generations together, all neighbors under the same sky, it puts us at peace” says Roth. “No matter where you are from, you are there enjoying that moment that brings the community together”. That is the greatest satisfaction for the entire Parks and Recreation Department team.

l Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Doral cuenta con un equipo de 24 profesionales, que incluye Coordinadores de Eventos y Programas, Administradores y Ayudantes de Parques, coordinados por su directora, la Sra. Bárbara Hernández. Adicionalmente, con el apoyo de proveedores de servicios y voluntarios, este equipo trabaja arduamente para brindar una operación de alta calidad para el disfrute de los residentes y visitantes. El momento culminante de casi un año de trabajo para el Departamento de Parques y Recreación (P&R) de la Ciudad de Doral fue cuando más de 30,000 asistentes admiraron los hermosos fuegos artificiales “América a través de las décadas”, durante la pasada celebración del Cuatro de Julio en el Doral Central Park.

Sin embargo, no muchos imaginan la gran cantidad de horas y detalles necesarios para que la comunidad disfrute estos momentos extraordinarios y agradables, tanto en los eventos especiales como en la operación regular de los seis parques localizados en la Ciudad de Doral: Morgan Levy, Veterans, Trails and Tails, Downtown, Doral Meadows y Doral Central.

UNA DE LAS MAYORES INVERSIONES DE LA CIUDAD

Los Parques de Doral han sido desde siempre la parte favorita de la ciudad para todos los residentes, desde los niños hasta los adultos mayores. El sistema de parques pasó de ser un pequeño parque de columpios en el área actualmente ocupada por el Morgan Levy Park, a las facilidades de primera calidad actualmente en operación, y varias más que estarán disponibles en el futuro cercano.

La partida asignada a P&R en el presupuesto 2014-2015 es de $12,240,742.00, la segunda más grande después del Departamento de Policía. Constituye el 21.21% del presupuesto general de la ciudad y tiene el objetivo de invertirse en programas, eventos e infraestructura deportiva y recreativa para el disfrute y mejora de la calidad de vida de los residentes de Doral. Es posible que este monto se incremente en la próxima sesión de presupuesto, pues la construcción de facilidades adicionales está en proyecto y desarrollo: el parque Norte, ubicado en la calle 74 y la Avenida 97; el Parque de la 114 avenida y también se espera el próximo año iniciar la fase de diseño del tan esperado Centro Acuático.

UN AÑO DE PREPARACIÓN PARA UN DÍA DE DISFRUTE

El Cuatro de Julio es “el evento más grande y con mayor asistencia, tenemos que hacerlo cada vez mejor” explica Jessica Roth, Coordinadora de Eventos Especiales de P&R; “Contactamos los proveedores a principios del año, entre Enero y Febrero. Queremos brindar lo mejor para la comunidad, así que necesitamos comenzar con tiempo.” Para esto se reservó la porción mayor en el presupuesto de eventos de P&R, $90,500, destinado para cubrir los gastos tales como tarima, iluminación, entretenimiento y lo más importante: los fuegos artificiales. La coordinación de los eventos está en manos de P&R, pero el éxito se basa en la colaboración de todos los departamentos de la Ciudad. “Policía se encarga de la seguridad; Obras Publicas se asegura que el área esté lista para este tipo de eventos; Construcción maneja los permisos y seguridad de estructuras; Normas y Procedimientos se asegura que todos cumplan con las ordenanzas y códigos; Asuntos Públicos nos apoya con el mercadeo y promoción; todos ponen su grano de arena para el éxito” explica Roth. Para los eventos recurrentes, como el Cuatro de Julio, la preparación comienza apenas termina el evento del año anterior. “Recapitulamos las experiencias, evaluamos lo que funcionó y lo que no. Desarrollamos un plan de trabajo e incorporamos los cambios y nuevas ideas. Para ello tomamos en cuenta las opiniones y comentarios del público.”

Durante el evento, el personal realiza encuestas con los asistentes para recoger sus opiniones, e incorporan los comentarios recibidos por vía telefónica, correos electrónicos, medios sociales o el sitio web de la ciudad. Toda opinión es importante para hacerlo mejor al año siguiente. Una vez que se establecen logros, resultados y fechas de entrega, todos los equipos de P&R comienzan a trabajar. Se contactan proveedores, se contrata entretenimiento y se involucran a las organizaciones comunitarias que quieran participar. Luego se hacen reuniones regulares de seguimiento para verificar las listas de pendientes y asegurarse que “todo está confirmado y a tiempo.” Roth explica que la logística de los eventos más grandes, la organización y recepción de insumos y puesta a punto del sitio del evento puede comenzar hasta cinco días antes. “El día del evento todo sucede muy rápido. Ese día todo nuestro personal se involucra en sus tareas asignadas: seguridad, estacionamiento, manejo de emergencias. Nos aseguramos que todo funcione según lo planeado, y cuando el evento termina nos quedamos a recogerlo todo y ordenar el lugar. Y luego, ¡a trabajar para preparar el próximo año!” Tantas personas involucradas requieren un alto nivel de coordinación y atención a los detalles. Esto es lo que hace la diferencia: la atención a los detalles es la clave del éxito, para hacer los eventos en Doral inolvidables. “Cuando tenemos la oportunidad de unir todas las generaciones, todos los vecinos, bajo el mismo cielo, es un momento de convivencia y paz” dice Roth. “No importa de donde vengan, allí están todos disfrutando un evento que une a toda la comunidad.” Esa es la mayor satisfacción que puede tener el equipo del Departamento de Parques y Recreación.

he City of Doral Code Compliance Department main objective is to enforce City and County codes, sections of the Florida Building code and State statuses to protect the health, safety and welfare of the community. The team of 16 members, led by Department Director Mr. Adam Temple, operates seven days a week and works to assist internal departments, as well as outside agencies with enforcement activities They understand that only through proactive education and outreach initiatives will the community learn, adopt and comply with the codes, rules and regulations, and be aware of their rights and duties for maintaining the wellbeing of everyone in the community. Therefore, periodically the department organizes workshops, campaigns and activities to educate the population on different issues of importance for the city. On Wednesday July 15th, the Department organized a workshop to educate City of Doral residents on the objectives and operation of Community Development Districts (CDDs), their role on the maintenance and growth of different areas of the municipality; their location and status; benefits, costs and operations of these entities and their relationship with Home Owners Associations (HOA).

DEFINITION AND OPERATION OF CDDS

A Community Development District (CDD) is a governmental unit created to serve the long-term specific needs of its community. Established by a developer, landowner or government pursuant to Chapter 190 of the Florida Statutes, their purpose is planning, financing, constructing, operating and maintaining communitywide infrastructures and services specifically for the benefit of its residents. It is an alternative to municipal incorporation; moreover, they can operate within an existing municipality and are authorized by the statutes to provide services such as: • Water management and control • Water supply, sewer, and wastewater management • District roads and street lights • Public transportation and parking • Investigation and remediation of environmental contamination • Conservation areas, parks and recreational facilities • Fire prevention and control • School buildings and related structures • Security, but not the exercise of any police power • Waste collection & disposal • Mosquito control As CDDs generate their own revenue to provide the community with their necessary facilities and infrastructure, only those home or business owners within the district, who benefit from the special district’s services, are the ones who pay. CDDs protect property values by assuring property owners that their roads, water and sewer lines, and other essential facilities and services will continue to be maintained.

OPERATION AND GOVERNMENT OF CDDS

A Board of Supervisors (BoS) has to be installed within 90 days of the effective date of the rule or ordinance establishing the district; landowners meet to elect the 5 supervisors, where the 2 candidates with the highest number of votes participate

for 4 years and the three next are elected for 2 years. Once the first 2 years term is completed, there shall be an election of supervisors for the district every 2 years in November on a date established by the board. At the beginning of a development, members of the BoS are appointed or elected by the landowners or developers. After six years, the power within the BoS begins to transition to the residents of the district, increasing the need of involved and informed homeowners willing to participate on the operation of their CDDs

CDDS IN THE CITY OF DORAL

According to the Florida Community Development District Reports, the following CDDs exist in Doral: • Islands at Doral area: NE, NW, SW, III and Townhomes • Landmark at Doral • Grand Bay at Doral • Coronado • Downtown Doral Starting October 1, 2015 the Florida Statuses require that all CDDs have a website, including all identification and financial details that facilitate and increase their accountability and transparency of operation. CDDS AND HOAS

HOAs control and maintain common areas of a development. With their collected fees they pay for lawn care, trash pick-up, cable and other maintenance expenses, whereas CDDs manage and cover the cost of building roads, storm water systems, and infrastructure services and have the authority to issue tax-exempt bonds to finance, acquire, construct and operate the infrastructure within the district. The main point resides on the importance of residents’ involvement in the operation of their CDDs, to guarantee financial transparency and the completion and maintenance of the infrastructure that preserve the value of their properties.

l objetivo principal del Departamento de Normas y Procedimientos de la Ciudad de Doral es reforzar el cumplimiento de las normas y ordenanzas municipales y de los códigos estatales, con el fin de salvaguardar la salud, seguridad y bienestar de toda la comunidad. Dieciséis personas forman parte del Departamento, encabezadas por su director Adam Temple. Ellos trabajan siete días a la semana, apoyando la operación de los departamentos internos de la Ciudad y las agencias externas para garantizar el cumplimiento de las normas de convivencia. La educación ciudadana proactiva y las iniciativas de comunicaciones permiten que la comunidad comprenda, adopte y cumpla las reglas establecidas y se comprometa a velar por el bienestar de todos. Por lo tanto, el Departamento de Normas organiza adiestramientos y campañas periódicamente, para educar a la comunidad sobre diferentes tópicos de importancia para la convivencia en la ciudad. El miércoles 15 de Julio tuvo lugar un evento para educar a los residentes de Doral sobre los Distritos de Desarrollo Comunitario (CDDs por sus siglas en ingles) y su rol en el mantenimiento y crecimiento de la municipalidad; su ubicación y beneficios; sus costos de operaciones y su relación con las Asociaciones y Juntas de Condominio (HOA)

En el reporte de los CDD en Florida se encuentran ubicados en Doral los siguientes: • Islands at Doral area: NE, NW, SW, III y Townhomes • Landmark at Doral • Grand Bay at Doral • Coronado • Downtown Doral A partir del 1 de Octubre del 2015, todos los CDDs deben tener un website que incluya la identificación e información financiera del organismo, para facilitar e incrementar la transparencia en su operación. DEFINICIÓN Y OPERACIÓN DE LOS CDDS

CDDS Y HOAS

Los CDDs son unidades gubernamentales creadas con el fin de cubrir necesidades específicas a largo plazo dentro de una comunidad. Son establecidas por los desarrolladores o dueños de terrenos, cumpliendo con el capítulo 190 de los Estatutos de Florida, estableciendo como propósito que el CDD operará para financiar, construir, operar y mantener ciertas facilidades de infraestructura y servicios que benefician a los residentes. No solamente son una alternativa o complemento a la incorporación municipal, sino que pueden operar dentro de ellas y están autorizadas a proveer servicios tales como: • Agua y alcantarillado • Carreteras distritales e iluminación. • Transporte público y estacionamiento • Conservación de áreas verdes y facilidades recreacionales • Investigación y remediación de contaminación ambiental • Prevención y control de incendios • Construcción de escuelas y otras estructuras relacionadas • Seguridad general, sin incluir autoridad policial • Recolección de desperdicios. • Control de mosquitos Los CDD generan sus propios ingresos y proveen solamente a los residentes del distrito las facilidades e infraestructura. Por lo tanto solamente pagan por los beneficios quienes los están recibiendo. De ese modo se protege el valor de las propiedades, asegurando que los propietarios tendrán los servicios esenciales de agua, luz y vialidad entre otros, de manera continua y bien mantenidos.

OPERACIÓN Y GOBIERNO DE LOS CDDS

Un Comité de Supervisores (BoS por sus siglas en inglés) es instalado antes de los 90 días de establecido el distrito vía norma u ordenanza. Los propietarios del terreno o desarrolladores se reúnen y designan 5 supervisores. Los 2 que obtengan la mayor cantidad de votos servirán en el BoS por 4 años y los 3 siguientes servirán

por 2 años. Por lo tanto hay elecciones de miembros del comité cada 2 años en el mes de Noviembre. Al partir del sexto año se espera que el poder dentro del BoS vaya siendo transferido de los desarrolladores a los propietarios residentes en el distrito, incrementándose la necesidad de tener residentes bien informados es interesados en participar en la operación de sus CDDs.

CDDS EN LA CIUDAD OF DORAL

Las HOAs controlan y mantienen las áreas comunes en un desarrollo. Las cuotas pagadas por el condominio se invierten en jardinería y paisajismo, manejo de desechos, servicios de tv por cable y otros gastos de mantenimiento. Entretanto, los CDDs manejan los costos de construir y mantener las vías, sistemas de alcantarillado e infraestructura de servicios; además pueden emitir bonos libres de impuesto para financiar, adquirir, construir y operar la infraestructura dentro del distrito. El punto importante es que los residentes tienen que comenzar a participar en sus CDDs, para garantizar la transparencia financiera y la finalización y mantenimiento de la infraestructura que les permitirá preservar el valor de sus propiedades.

ince colonial times and until 1882, immigration to the United States was essentially free and unrestricted. Millions of immigrants came to this country, and together transformed a simple minor post of the United Kingdom into one of the most populated and rich nations in the world. Nevertheless, the subject of immigration has always created opposition and today it has become an important political matter, generating strong passions from all sides of the debate on what should, and should not be done regarding change of immigration laws in the United States. The experience of immigrants in the past is amazingly similar to the situation we confront today. The first wave came in colonial times, when the British, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Germans, Dutch, Swedish, Spanish and French arrived. British immigrants and their descendants were the dominating group, representing 60% of the population in 1790. Another strong wave came in mid XIX century, when a large group of Irish Catholics arrived, in the middle of great controversy. California’s gold fever started in 1849 and brought immigrants from around the world, including the first substantial Chinese population in the United States. At this moment, there was a strong nationalist policy, which ended in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which became the first federal legislation to limit free immigration into the country. During the first two decades of the XX century the so-called “new immigrants” arrived, they came from southern and eastern Europe. This great number of people, mainly Catholics and Jews, generated a great and massive rejection, which lead to strict immigration limitations in the 1920’s. In 1965 a new legislation lifted many of the restrictions set in the 1920’s, allowing the United States to become a nation of immigrants, with the difference that today’s largest immigration is not from Europe yet from Latin American countries. As it has become evident through time, none of the immigration processes has destroyed the American republic. In fact, today, the majority of Americans celebrate, instead of condemn, the many contributions of immigrants to the economy and

culture of the United States. John Kennedy was probably one of the most important American icons to support immigrants, when writing his book “A Nation of Immigrants”, he send a message that is as current today as it was 57 years ago, in which he highlights the contribution of immigrants at a time when the country was immersed in a debate regarding the direction of his policy. In his book, Kennedy states that the United States is a nation of people that value tradition and the exploration of new frontiers, and that those who arrive here deserve freedom to build a better life for themselves and for their adoptive country. Nevertheless, Donald Trump, the business tycoon who today aspires the seat once occupied by John Kennedy, seems to disagree with the unforgettable leader, as stated by his strong words against Hispanic immigration and specially towards some Mexicans: “México sends its people, but it doesn’t send the best. They are sending people with a lot of problems (...). They’re bringing drugs, crime, and rapists. I assume some of them are good”. We must recall that he made this statement, in the middle of his speech to announce his intention to run for the republican presidential candidacy in 2016. His statements not only generated strong reactions in the political, social and moral arenas, as they were considered racist and xenophobic, yet they also generated immediate financial consequences, as the television networks Univision, NBC, Ora

TV and Televisa, broke their business relations with Trump, and so did the commercial giant Macy’s, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) and even the Professional Golf Association (PGA) which decided to stop using the Trump golf course for the Grand Slam. On their part, republican precandidates Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, Lindsey Graham and Chris Christie rushed to criticize and disassociate themselves from Donald Trump’s statements. Nevertheless, the controversy does not seem to have affected Trump in the polls, which place him in first place on the republican race towards the White House. Additionally, after his strong comments, he has become the most googled person, and he’s had countless appearances in the press, radio and international TV. The strength of his words has generated great impact in the media, and it seems that not everybody opposes him. Besides some Native Americans who might seem threatened by the progress of Hispanics, there are those who believe, that although it is true that the majority of Hispanics who live in this country are not criminals, there are many who are, and we tend to defend them only because they are Hispanic immigrants. Maybe it is wiser to recognize the mistakes of the Latinos who make them instead of defending them blindly. Trump, on his part, does not seem to worry too much about the comments against him and he assures that he will win the Hispanic vote to become the republican candidate and the next President of the United States, in spite of his controversial statements on Mexican immigrants, because he is going to create sources of employment.

to the city. Now, the fact is that his comments against Hispanics offended the majority of the 80% of Latin-American residents who welcomed him to our city. The Mayor of Doral, Luigi Boria has stated in several occasions that as a Hispanic, he feels outraged by Donald Trump’s comments, nevertheless, he recognizes that as a leader of the city he can’t take sides, nor can he make a political issue out of this. “With over one thousand employees Mr. Trump is the biggest employer of the city, and Doral is a growing city which needs economic development, for this reason I believe that the important thing is to demonstrate that we, as Hispanics, are contributing a lot with this nation”, claimed Boria. Deputy Major Sandra Ruíz expressed that she feels highly offended by these statements, especially after “the respectful manner in which we

have worked with Mr. Trump. His words were painful for the Hispanic community and I believe he has a long way ahead of him if he wants to make things right”. “The truth is that, for many years, the matter of immigration and the legal status of many of those who arrive to this country, has generated controversy, but to combine the word immigrant and the word delinquent in the same phrase makes no sense”. For the deputy mayor of Doral, Trump touched a subject that has no boundaries, “he referred to the Mexican immigrants, but all Latinos have joined in solidarity to protest for this statements with one voice and one feeling”, stated Sandra Ruíz. Councilwoman Ana María Rodríguez joins the voices that reject Trump’s comments; “I was surprised by the way he expressed himself about the Mexican immigrants. You can’t generalize, in every nationality there’s good people and bad people”, she explained. “I believe these statements will definitely affect Donald Trump’s political aspirations. The fact that he

currently is enjoying large media coverage does not mean that this effect will last, these propaganda benefits are only temporary and are going to decrease when the initial impact passes”. Christi Fraga, who was the only member of the Council to oppose the Miss Universe pageant, pointed out that he is not surprised by Donald Trump’s statements, “I always said he was a bad neighbor and that when they gave him the keys to the city we were ignoring the harm he inflicted on the people who live next to his golf course when he planted the palm trees”. “I, really only hope that his comments do not affect Doral’s economy, because the people that go to his resort and the events held there bring tourists to the city, which translates in indirect benefits for businesses and small merchants”. Beyond all the opinions, what seems to be true is that this matter will continue to generate controversy around one of the individuals who aspires to become the next President of the United States.

esde la época colonial hasta 1882, la inmigración a los Estados Unidos fue esencialmente libre y sin restricciones. Millones de inmigrantes vinieron al país, ayudando a transformar un puesto periférico del Imperio Británico en una de las naciones más pobladas y prósperas del mundo. Sin embargo, la inmigración siempre genera oposición y hoy se ha convertido en una cuestión política importante, generando fuertes pasiones en todos los lados del debate sobre lo que se debe hacer (o no hacer) para cambiar las leyes de inmigración de Estados Unidos. Las experiencias de los inmigrantes del pasado tienen similitudes sorprendentes a la situación que enfrentamos hoy en día. La primera oleada se produjo en la época colonial, cuando llegaron ingleses, escoceses, galeses, irlandeses, alemanes, holandeses, suecos, españoles y franceses. Los inmigrantes ingleses predominaron, así como sus descendientes, que comprenden el 60% de la población en 1790. Otra fuerte oleada se produjo a mediados del siglo XIX, cuando llegaron un gran número de católicos irlandeses, en medio de gran controversia. La fiebre del oro de California, que se inició en 1849, trajo migrantes de todo el mundo, incluyendo la primera población china sustancial en los Estados Unidos. En este momento, se genera una fuerte política nacionalista que culminó en la Ley de Exclusión China de 1882, la primera legislación federal para restringir la inmigración libre al país. En las dos primeras décadas del siglo XX llegaron los llamados “nuevos inmigrantes”, que venían del sur y este de Europa. Esta afluencia, en su mayoría compuesta por católicos y judíos, generó un rechazo masivo que llevó a limitaciones estrictas sobre la inmigración en la década de 1920. En 1965 una nueva legislación levantó muchas de las restricciones impuestas en 1920, permitiendo que Estados Unidos se convierta en una nación de inmigrantes, con la diferencia que la inmigración actual no tiende a provenir de Europa, sino de los países de América Latina. Como ha sido evidente a través del paso de los años, ninguno de estos procesos migratorios ha destruido la república americana. De hecho, hoy en día, la mayoría de los estadounidenses celebran, en lugar de condenar, las contribuciones hechas a la economía y la cultura de Estados Unidos por los inmigrantes.

John Kennedy sería quizás uno de los más importantes íconos estadounidense en manifestarse en pro de los inmigrantes, al escribir su libro “Una Nación de Inmigrantes”, cuyo mensaje es tan relevante hoy como lo fue hace 57 años, pues destaca la contribución de los inmigrantes en un momento en que el país estaba encerrado en un debate sobre la dirección de su política. En su libro, Kennedy señala que Estados Unidos es una nación de gente que valora la tradición y la exploración de nuevas fronteras al que llegan personas que merecen la libertad para construir una vida mejor para sí mismos en su país de adopción. Sin embargo, Donald Trump, el magnate de los negocios que hoy aspira al cargo que una vez ocupó John Kennedy, parece no estar de acuerdo con el inolvidable mandatario, pues sus fuertes palabras contra la inmigración hispana y especialmente en detrimento de algunos mexicanos, así lo demuestran: “México manda a su gente, pero no manda lo mejor. Está enviando a gente con un montón de problemas (...). Están trayendo drogas, el crimen, a los violadores. Asumo que hay algunos que son buenos”. Cabe recordar que mencionó estas palabras, en medio del discurso que pronunció para anunciar su intención de competir en la candidatura presidencial republicana en el 2016. Sus declaraciones no sólo generaron fuertes reacciones a nivel político, social y moral, al ser consideradas racistas y xenofóbicas, sino también trajeron consecuencias económicas inmediatas, pues las cadenas de televisión Univisión, NBC, Ora TV y Televisa, rompieron relaciones con Trump, así como también lo hicieron el gigante comercial Macy’s, la Asociación Nacional de Carreras de Automóviles de Serie (NASCAR) y hasta la Asociación

Nacional de Golfistas (PGA) que decidió no usar el campo de golf de Trump para la realización del Grand Slam. Por su parte, los precandidatos republicanos Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, Lindsey Graham y Chris Christie se apresuraron a desmarcarse de los comentarios de Donald Trump y han criticado sus palabras. Sin embargo, la polémica no parece pasarle factura a Trump en las encuestas, que le sitúan a la cabeza de la concurrida carrera republicana por la Casa Blanca. Esto sin contar que, a partir de sus fuertes comentarios, se han convertido en la persona más googleada, contando además con un sin número de apariciones en la prensa, radio y televisión internacional. Lógicamente, la contundencia de sus palabras han generado un gran impacto mediático, pues al parecer no todos están en desacuerdo con él. Además de algunos nativos americanos que pueden sentirse amenazados por el progreso hispano, hay quienes que opinan que, si bien es muy cierto que la mayoría de los hispanos que vivimos en este país no somos criminales, también hay muchos que sí lo son a quienes, generalmente, nos empeñamos en defender sólo porque son inmigrantes hispanos. Quizás reconocer los errores de los latinos que sí comenten errores, sea

más sensato que emprender defensas a ciegas. Trump, por su parte, parece no estar muy preocupado por los comentarios en su contra y asegura que ganará el voto hispano para convertirse en candidato republicano y después en presidente de Estados Unidos, a pesar de sus polémicas declaraciones sobre los inmigrantes mexicanos, porque él va a crear fuentes de empleo.

Donald Trump y Doral están vinculados a través de su resort y campo de golf en nuestras inmediaciones. En enero, Doral no solo patrocinó el certamen Miss Universo, sino que también galardonó al empresario con las llaves de la ciudad. Ahora, resulta que sus ofensas contra los hispanos hacen sentir bastante mal a gran parte del 80% de los residentes latinos de la ciudad que le dio la bienvenida. El alcalde de Doral, Luigi Boria ha mencionado en reiteradas oportunidades sentirse ofendido, como hispano, por los señalamientos de Donald Trump, sin embargo, reconoce que en su condición de líder de la ciudad no puede polarizarse, ni convertir esto en un hecho político. “El señor Trump es el mayor empleador de la ciudad, con más de mil trabajadores y Doral es una ciudad en

crecimiento que necesita desarrollo económico, por lo que creo que lo importante es este asunto es demostrar que nosotros, como hispanos, estamos aportado mucho a esta nación”, recalcó Boria. La vice alcaldesa Sandra Ruíz manifiesta sentirse bastante ofendida por estas declaraciones, especialmente por “la forma respetuosa en la que nosotros hemos trabajado con el señor Trump. Sus palabras fueron dolorosas para la comunidad hispana y creo que tiene un largo camino por delante si piensa rectificar”. “La verdad es que, desde hace mucho años, el tema migratorio y el estatus legal de muchas de las personas que llegan al país, ha generado controversias, pero combinar la palabra inmigrante y la palabra delincuente en una misma frase no tiene ningún sentido”. Para la vice alcaldesa de Doral, Trump tocó un tema que no tiene fronteras, “se refirió a los inmigrantes mexicanos, pero todos los latinos se han solidarizado en protesta por estas declaraciones con la misma voz y el mismo sentir”, indicó Sandra Ruíz. La concejal Ana María Rodríguez se une a la voces que rechazan los comentarios de Trump, “me sorprendió su forma de expresarse sobre los inmigrantes mexicanos. No hay que generalizar, en todas las nacionales hay gente buena y gente mala”, explicó.

“Yo creo que esos señalamientos, definitivamente, van a perjudicar a Donald Trump en sus aspiraciones políticas. El hecho de que ahora tenga una gran cobertura mediática no significa que este efecto vaya a perdurar, pues los beneficios propagandísticos que está obteniendo en este momento son temporales y van a desaparecer cuando el impacto disminuya”. Christi Fraga, quien fue el único miembro del Concejo que se opuso al patrocinio del Miss Universo, señalo que no le sorprenden las declaraciones de Donald Trump, “yo siempre dije que él era un mal vecino y no tomamos en cuenta que ya había perjudicado a las personas que viven en las adyacencias de su campo de golf con la siembra de las palmeras, cuando decidieron darle la llave de la ciudad”. “Yo, realmente, lo único que espero es que sus comentarios no afecten la economía de Doral, pues la gente que venía a su resort y los eventos que allí se realizan siempre traían turistas para la ciudad, los cuales aportaban beneficios indirectos para los negocios y comerciantes pequeños”. Más allá de todas las opiniones, lo que sí parece ser cierto es que este tema va a seguir generando polémicas en torno a una de las personas que aspira a convertirse en el próximo presidente de los Estados Unidos de América.

A proposal of Miami Design Camp

he proposal of Urban and Architectonic Development for Doral includes a total of seven projects, presented to the authorities by a group of Architecture and Industrial Development students from Mexico and Colombia grouped in the Miami Design Camp. This information was given by Doral Vice Mayor, Sandra Ruiz, who expressed that this is an initiative of Latin-American universities that enter the summer camp of Miami Design Camp to bring innovative proposals for different cities. “In this opportunity, we had the privilege of being the city chosen for the designs of this proposal characterized by young, modern and current talent”. For Vice Mayor Ruiz it was a great pleasure to receive these young students that, with their innovative and creative ideas, demonstrated how Latin Americans are able to contribute towards the development of the cities of South Florida. “ Now, the recommendations they presented will be assessed by the Planning and Zoning Department to determine if their implementation is in fact feasible”. “The seven proposals presented by the young students of Miami Design Camp are not only based on the Urban and Architectonic development, yet they also aim towards a vision of environment sanitation that promotes citizens to walk and enjoy the open areas and thus achieve a healthier and more active lifestyle”.

SEVEN PROPOSALS

During this summer, Miami Design Camp developed the Multidisciplinary Doral Lab-Experience Workshop, an international event that joins landscaping, urbanism and architecture to create a Master Plan for the City of Doral that includes marketing and business, lead by distinguished international professors. Marco Ramirez, one of the consultants of the Miami Design Plan explains that this proposal focuses in the development of the areas of Architecture, Industrial Design, Marketing and Communications, Business, Hospitality and Tourism, with the objective of improving the environment and functionality of the City of Doral. “In particular, the seven proposals presented to City of Doral were, a civic center between 87th Av. A 25th St., a cultural pavilion in front of the City Hall of Doral, a natural park with an outstanding landscaping development near the landfill, a multi-use space for the implementation

of emerging technologies in 107 Av. with 47 St., a technological park for healthy food between 87 Av. and 33 St. an attached recreational park and a integrated of urban renewal project witch includes the modification of the space to generate more pedestrian areas and bike routes on 41 St.”, indicated Ramirez. “We have gathered young students from different universities of Mexico and Colombia, all of them sharing the passion for urban and architectural development, whom have seen the Mayor Luigi Boria, Vice Mayor Sandra Ruiz, and Julian Perez, Planning cosmopolitan City of Doral and Zoning Director of City of Doral, with Marco Ramirez and students of as the perfect site to achieve Miami Design Camp their innovating projects in research programs to help the participants improve their benefic of the residents of this knowledge on global thinking, increase their abilities to beautiful location”. n total de siete proyectos conforman la Propuesta de Desarrollo Urbano y Arquitectónico para Doral presentada a las autoridades de la ciudad por un grupo de estudiantes de arquitectura y desarrollo industrial de México y Colombia, agrupados en el Miami Design Camp. Así lo dio a conocer la vice alcaldesa de Doral, Sandra Ruíz, quien expresó que esta es una iniciativa de universidades latinoamericanas que se involucran en el Campamento de Verano de Miami Design Camp para traer sus innovadoras propuestas a diversas ciudades. “En esta oportunidad, tuvimos la suerte de ser la ciudad escogida para el diseño de esta propuesta en la que priva el talento joven, moderno y actualizado”. Para la vice alcaldesa Ruíz, fue de gran agrado recibir a estos jóvenes que, con sus innovadoras y creativas ideas, demostraron como los latinos pueden contribuir al desarrollo de las ciudades del sur de la Florida. “Ahora, las recomendaciones que ellos presentaron van a ser evaluadas por el Departamento de Planificación y Zonificación para determinar si es factible su implementación”. “Las siete propuestas presentadas por la jóvenes de Miami Design Camp además de, obviamente, enmarcarse dentro del desarrollo urbanístico y arquitectónico, están dirigidas hacia una visión de saneamiento ambiental que propicie que las personas salgan a caminar y disfruten de los espacios al aire libre para lograr una vida más saludable y activa”.

SIETE PROPUESTAS

Durante este verano, Miami Design Camp desarrolló el Taller Multidisciplinario Doral Lab-Experience, un evento internacional que fusiona las disciplinas de paisajismo, urbanismo y arquitectura para elaborar un Plan Maestro para la ciudad de Doral, que incluye mercadeo y negocios, guiado por destacados docentes internacionales. Marco Ramírez, uno de los consultores de Miami Design Camp explica que está propuesta se centra en el desarrollo de las áreas de arquitectura, diseño industrial, mercadotecnia y comunicaciones, negocios, hotelería y turismo, todas ellas destinadas a mejoras concretas en el ambiente y la funcionalidad de la ciudad de Doral. “En concreto, las siete propuestas que se presentaron a la ciudad de Doral fueron un centro cívico entre la 87 Avenida y la 25 Calle, un pabellón cultural frente al City Hall de Doral, un parque natural con un destacado desarrollo de paisajismo cerca del vertedero de basura, un espacio de uso mixto para la implementación de tecnologías emergentes en la 107 Avenida con la 47 Calle, un parque tecnológico para alimentos saludables

La Ciudad de Doral, hace reconocimiento a los estudiantes del Miami Design Summer Camp entre la 87 Avenida y la 33 Calle, un parque recreativo anexo y un proyecto integral de renovación urbano que incluye la modificación del espacio para generar más áreas peatonales y bicirutas sobre la 41 Calle”, indicó Ramírez. “Hemos logrado reunir a jóvenes estudiantes de diferentes universidades de México y Colombia, todo ellos unidos por la misma pasión por el desarrollo urbanístico y arquitectónico, quienes han visto en la cosmopolita ciudad de Doral el sitio perfecto para llevar a la realidad sus innovadores proyectos en beneficio de los residentes de este hermoso lugar”. Así como ahora Miami Design Camp presenta su propuesta a la ciudad de Doral ya lo ha hecho con éxito en ciudades como Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Pompano Beach y Dania Beach, pues en realidad el Miami Design Camp es un programa internacional multidisciplinario con sede en Miami que, anualmente, explora diferentes ciudades como un laboratorio inagotable de experiencias académicas, profesionales y personales. Es para lograr este objetivo que dentro de Miami Design Camp surge PATH que pretende establecer y posicionar un laboratorio de diseño experimental y el intercambio cultural entre las regiones, al igual que construir programas académicos y de investigación para ayudar a los participantes a mejorar sus conocimientos sobre el pensamiento global, incrementar sus habilidades en la

fabricación de documentos de contenido y enriquecer su experiencia en ambientes que propician la creatividad y la innovación, al intervenir contextos extranjeros en ámbitos urbanos. “La excelente localización geográfica, además de su riqueza multicultural, hace del sur de la Florida un observatorio ideal para el desarrollo de los talleres itinerantes multidisciplinarios en contextos foráneos que el programa promueve”, agrega Marco Ramírez, quien como arquitecto y urbanista pone sus servicios a favor de este proyecto educativo y cultural. Ramírez explica que la intervención urbana de las ciudades requiere de técnicas que sean capaces de incorporar la verdadera complejidad de las mismas, al tiempo que la tecnología, la política, la vida social y los motores económicos no dejan de cambiar. “Para lograr que esta intervención sea exitosa nos basamos en el intercambio de información proveniente de múltiples disciplinas”. Comenta Ramírez que es necesario trabajar en un campo expandido que incluya la arquitectura, arquitectura de paisaje, diseño urbano, ecología, diseño de infraestructura e ingeniería, mercadeo y comunicaciones, hotelería y turismo, entre otras disciplinas. “Invertimos tiempo y esfuerzo en las ciudades y su desarrollo porque creemos que las marcas más importantes del mundo serán las ciudades”.

Councilwoman Christi Fraga and MOEN Presented the

“Christi Fraga Youth Leadership Award”

n Monday, June 15, 2015, Councilwoman Christi Fraga and MOEN awarded the “Christi Fraga Youth Leadership Award” to Belen Jesuit Preparatory School alum José Andrés Maguina (‘15). The CFYLA recognition is awarded once a quarter to young individuals whose contributions include tutoring, participating in community-based projects, assisting the needy, elderly, sick, and/or disabled, or who have helped others overcome personal challenges. The award includes a $1,500 scholarship prize sponsored by MOEN, which Mr. Maguina will use to attend Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in the fall of 2015. In early May, Councilwoman Fraga requested that Doral and adjacent area high school counselors nominate students between the ages of 15 to 23, who have shown leadership while providing service to the members of their community. Councilwoman Fraga then convened a committee composed of a City of Doral councilmember, a staff member, and a representative from MOEN to evaluate the nominees. Committee members selected Doral resident José Andrés Maguina as the award’s June 2015 winner.

In addition to this campaign, Mr. Maguina also volunteered weekly throughout high school at Blue Lakes Elementary, a local school with a large autistic population, where he helped the children with their homework and taught them how to play soccer. e left his homeland behind, just before graduation, after four years of study at the University of Havana, because of his political opinions. He arrived in 1997, with 21 years, looking for a brighter future, and though his luggage was empty, his heart was full of big achievements and dreams, yet to come true. 18 years later, he has managed to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), build his own firm, teach as a university professor, be part of the community, and ultimately, also position himself to be one of Doral’s political leaders. David Hernandez states, he has served as an advisor to different sectors of the Doral community “By striving to be elected as a councilman, I am looking for the opportunity to design programs, that educate and help all members of the Doral community become part of and enjoy the benefits of the American system, while abiding by the law, and observing the rights of other citizens.” “I have watched our beautiful city grow at a fast pace. I feel the time has come to offer my experience, vocation for civic duty and leadership, to look for long-term and greater solutions that will not compromise the rights or the resources of its citizens” David states. “Doral is not only where we live, but the place where we raise our children, where we work and develop our businesses. … WHO IS DAVID?

David Hernandez was born in Havana, Cuba on February 11, 1976, in a family where education and hard work was at the center, since he belongs to the fourth generation of accountants on his mother’s side and on his father’s family side, to the third generation of university professors. Though his parents and grandparents are great role models he has a special place in his memory for his great-grandmother Segunda Villar Prada, a Spanish immigrant who taught him well on the importance of hard work, community values and sharing our own blessings with others: “I look back in time, and remember being a fast learning student, who was pushed and instructed by greatgrandma to instruct and help other kids who struggled with their learning. I developed then, one of my lifetime vocations: teaching… who would have thought that years later, this vocation would turn into high level university instruction”. His immediate need to leave Cuba developed while studying at the University of Havana “as soon as I became a defender of students’ rights, the faculty and officials started to harass me. Simultaneously, my mother was in Miami, trying to claim me through the immigration process”. Upon his decision to select Miami as his future

destination, David took his English language learning very seriously, which allowed him to be ahead of his peers. Once he arrives in Miami, he bends his knees to kiss his new homeland, thanks God for this new opportunity and registers in Miami Dade College, while working full-time to make his “American dream” come true. Later on, he transfers to FIU, where he graduates with a bachelor and master degrees, in accounting, and auditing respectively. Upon every graduation, he took another step up the corporate ladder, being promoted through different management positions, until he worked as a Territory Manager for a Fortune 500 company (American Standard). David feels his family professional calling, sits for the CPA exam and begins his public accounting career as auditor in KPMG, a Big Four Accounting firm. Subsequently, he opened his consulting firm while teaching Miami Dade College and FIU students. He currently continues to teach MBA students at MAU, located in Doral. During the worldwide economic crisis of 2008, David stood up to many personal and professional challenges. “These were very tough years, but my perseverance, faith and the love of my daughter encouraged me to push forward. I learned that success is not about the material possessions one has, but the outcome of years of education, experience and practical knowledge that make one earn, the admiration and respect of others, and ultimately, with time, material success” The knowledge, experience and leadership of David Hernandez, has brought about a high demand for services, in both of his firms: “Remote Books, LLC” (accounting, tax and business consulting) and “DHCPA, Inc.” (Financial advisory), both located in Doral. “For the past three years, I have also lived in Doral, where I have noticed the lack of political leadership, and lack of elected officials that have the education, experience, and leadership to steer our city into the right direction, while uniting our community with a common sense of purpose. artió de su querida Cuba, dejando atrás una carrera universitaria de 4 años en la Universidad de la Habana, a causa de sus opiniones políticas. Llegó a Miami con 21 años en el año 1997 buscando un futuro mejor, y aunque la maleta venía vacía, el corazón lo traía repleto de metas y sueños por alcanzar. A 18 años de su llegada, no solamente ha logrado hacerse contador público, fundar su propia empresa, enseñar como profesor universitario, y formar parte activa de la comunidad, sino que también aspira a ser uno de los líderes políticos de Doral. David Hernández manifiesta que ha servido por años como asesor, a varios sectores de la comunidad de Doral. “Lo que realmente busco postulándome como concejal de Doral es crear y difundir programas que ayuden a los miembros de la comunidad a insertarse y triunfar dentro del sistema americano, bajo el respeto a las leyes y derechos ciudadanos”. “He observado con detenimiento el crecimiento de nuestra hermosa ciudad. Ahora, me decidido a ofrecer mi experiencia, vocación por el deber cívico, y liderazgo, para buscar soluciones superiores a largo plazo, que no comprometan el derecho, ni los recursos de sus ciudadanos”, explica David. “Doral no es solamente la ciudad en que vivimos, es también el sitio donde crecen nuestros hijos, donde trabajamos y desarrollamos nuestras empresas. Es importante que todos colaboremos por el bien común, especialmente aquéllos con una educación, experiencia y liderazgo a prueba, que arroje frutos en toda dirección”, acota. A sus 39 años de vida, David destaca a su hija de nueve años, como su mayor orgullo. … Y QUIEN ES DAVID?

David Hernández nació en La Habana, Cuba el 11 de febrero de 1976, en el seno de una familia marcada por los valores académicos y laborales, pues pertenece a la cuarta generación de contadores de su familia materna y en su familia paterna, a la tercera generación de profesores universitarios. Aunque tanto sus padres como sus abuelos han sido ejemplos a seguir, recuerda con especial orgullo a su bisabuela, Segunda Villar Prada, una emigrante española singular, de quien aprendió la importancia del trabajo, los valores comunitarios y a compartir con los demás. “Recuerdo que de niño siempre fui muy consecuente con mis estudios y mi bisabuela me enseñó a instruir y ayudar a los niños que no aprendían bien en la escuela. De aquellos tiempos, viene otra de mis grandes vocaciones: la docencia… quien iba a decir que años después, esas motivaciones de pequeño serían las misma que me llevaron a ser profesor universitario”. Su necesidad de salir de Cuba empezó a surgir cuando estudiaba en la universidad de La Habana, “tan pronto como empecé a defender los derechos estudiantiles, comenzaron las represalias en mi contra. Paralelamente, mi mamá ya estaba en Miami y comenzó el proceso de reclamación migratoria”.

En cuanto David supo que su nuevo destino era Miami empezó a estudiar inglés, por lo que llegó con un paso adelante. Una vez en Miami, besa tierra estadounidense, le da gracias a Dios por esta nueva oportunidad, se inscribe en Miami Dade College, y comienza a trabajar a tiempo completo, para realizar su “sueño americano”. Luego se transfiere a FIU, donde concluye sus estudios superiores, hasta alcanzar una maestría en contabilidad y auditoría. Al término de sus estudios, logra ascender en el mundo corporativo, siendo gerente de varias empresas, hasta llegar a ser ejecutivo de una multinacional (American Standard). David siente el llamado de la tradición familiar (contador), y al pasar el examen de contador público (CPA), comienza su carrera práctica como auditor en KPMG, una de las cuatro firmas líderes a nivel mundial. Luego organiza su propia firma consultora, mientras enseña a estudiantes de Miami Dade College y FIU. Actualmente enseña en MAU, con sede en Doral. Durante la crisis económica que vivió todo el país en el 2008, David enfrentó muchos retos personales y profesionales. “Fueron años muy duros, y mi perseverancia, fe y el amor de mi hija me impulsaron a salir adelante, pero aprendí que el éxito no está en tener cosas materiales. Con el objetivo de salvar más y dañar menos”, ya abrió sus puertas en Doral, Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center, un reconocido centro oncológico, caracterizado por el uso de las más avanzada tecnología en radiación para el tratamiento y cura del cáncer. El centro cuenta con el más reciente sistema de tratamiento TomoTherapy Hi-Art: la unidad TomoTherapy HDA, uno de los sistemas mejor integrados y más avanzados para el tratamiento absoluto del cáncer. Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center fue fundado en el 2007 en la ciudad de Bayamón en Puerto Rico y ahora abrió una nueva sede en Doral con el objetivo de seguir salvando vidas y ofrecerle una mejor calidad de vida a sus pacientes.

Este centro fue fundado por el doctor Pedro SerranoOjeda, quien cuenta con un equipo de expertos y dedicados profesionales médicos que se concentran en brindarle a sus pacientes un servicio de alta calidad, innovación y respeto, asegurando una lucha positiva y efectiva contra el cáncer. El doctor Serrano-Ojeda, quien es un oncólogo radiólogo certificado con una experiencia que supera los 21 años, hace mención a su esposa Carmen, con quien comparte 12 años de matrimonio y dos hijos, como el pilar de todas sus decisiones y proyectos. “Es justamente ella quien ha insistido en ofrecer al paciente una atención al detalle, tanto en lo que se refiere a nuestras instalaciones y equipos médicos, como en lo que tiene que ver con el trato humano a cada una de las personas que acuden a nosotros.”

TOMOTHERAPY HDA

Al referirse a la unidad TomoTherapy HDA, que es la única que existe en la Florida, el doctor SerranoOjeda, explicó su funcionamiento al señalar que “al focalizar y atacar con precisión sólo el área afectada,

TomoTherapy HDA trata con eficiencia las células cancerosas complejas y difíciles de alcanzar, disminuyendo así los efectos secundarios causados por los tratamientos de radiación convencionales”. “TomoTherapy es un sistema totalmente integrado compuesto por un acelerador lineal (equipo que produce la radiación) y una computadora de tomografía helicoidal de megavoltaje (MVCT) para obtener imágenes diarias. El sistema difiere de otros sistemas de terapia de radiación en la forma en que se calcula la dosis, como se identifica el tumor y como se proporciona la radiación”, indica el doctor Serrano-Ojeda. La instalación del sistema de planificación de tratamiento TomoTherapy en la sede de Doral de Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center requirió una inversión superior a las nueve millones de dólares. “No existe en la actualidad un equipo más avanzado en el tratamiento del cáncer y por eso es la base del servicio que ofrecemos a nuestros pacientes, por ejemplo, los estudios MVCT del TomoTherapy aseguran una exposición significativamente menor a la radiación durante la tomografía diaria (TC), mientras que los resultados de colección de imagen helicoidal o espiral resultan en una imagen de mayor calidad”. El doctor Serrano-Ojeda continúa explicando que la mesa de tratamiento del TomoTherapy emula perfectamente el desplazamiento inferior producido por el peso del paciente relacionado con el del uso de la mesa TC, para la colección de las imágenes de planificación de tratamiento (el peso del paciente desplazará la mesa en la parte inferior mientras esta se aleja de la base). “La radioterapia adaptada significa que el paciente recibe la mejor posibilidad de curarse con la menor complicación posible. Si el tumor crece o se contrae rápidamente o si el paciente pierde demasiado peso, el tratamiento puede ser modificado fácilmente para mantener un perfil de baja toxicidad y aumentar la tasa de curación”, agrega.

SERVICIO INTEGRAL

Con la plena seguridad de que un paciente con cáncer no necesariamente va a morir y convencido de que la gente no muere de vejez, sino cuando deja de soñar, el doctor Serrano Ojeda se ha esmerado en ofrecer en Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center un servicio más allá de la tecnología donde prive el trato personalizado, el respeto, la educación al paciente y la comprensión.

Biznovator is “a young, self-driven, entrepreneurial thinker that introduces new methods, ideas, products, or solutions for economic and social good.” Thirty-five entrepreneurs between the ages of 14 and 21 from all over the world, answered the call to begin developing ideas to better the future of their communities by taking part on the Biznovators Camp 2015, organized at the end of June by the Casimiro Global Foundation and sponsored by the City of Doral, Florida International University, Hellmann Logistics, Starbucks and other corporations. International participants came from China, Dominican Republic, and Mexico. During the intense two weeks of the camp, students attended workshops where they learned valuable skills related to business start-ups such as planning, funding initiatives and marketing. They developed their ideas and put the recently acquired knowledge in practice to compete for seed funds to launch their initiatives. The program included visits to Quest Workspaces,

Hellmann Logistics, Cisco and Starbucks headquarters and also to the Federal Reserve Branch and the City of Doral Government Center, where they were received by Manuel Pila, Economic Developer for the City and had the chance to meet Mayor Luigi Boria, who spoke to the students about his experience as business owner and entrepreneur. They also met the President of FIU, Dr. Mark Rosenberg. Students from the area received scholarships from the City of Doral to participate in the program, based on their academic performance and citizenship qualities. The recipients of this award were Gabriela Vilar, Isabel Rios and Angelica Ballestas from Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School; Andrea Proce from Doral Academy

and Francisco Somarriba from Divine Savior Academy.

THE BENEFITS OF EARLY ENTREPRENEURIAL EDUCATION

Juan P. Casimiro, founder of the Casimiro Global Foundation, has been passionate for the education of young people for more than 25 years. His extensive experience makes him one of the nation’s leading experts on training youth to develop their potential and empower their abilities to become successful business owners and entrepreneurs. He has collaborated on studies that showed the positive impact early education on business and economic concepts have on the academic development of children and, in the long term, in their contributions to their communities. The Biznovator Camp takes place in Miami twice a year and the next session will start August 9th. In addition to Mr. Casimiro, the team of experts, coaches and instructors that participated on the camp were: Jessica Allen, Jorge Olmos, Joshua Clodfelter, Marjoris Mendoza and Ken Finneran. The logistics, organization and technical support of the event were in charge of Magda Gelves and Francisco Odon, both of them Biznovator alumni. Odon, 17, was the second place winner of last year’s program and has since launched his business on installation of wheel lights for improving safety for bicycle riders. He is also a technical wiz and handled all communications and live-streaming of the training sessions of the camp, providing parents with the chance to observe their children in action while participating in the program. Meanwhile Gelves, also 17, handled all logistics for the smooth operation of the camp, organizing field visits, materials, transportation, schedules and communications with the parents. Her hard work was instrumental for the success of the program. The final presentations by the students included slideshows, videos and written materials to support the selling of their business idea to prospected investors. It was an integral growth event, especially for those who came from abroad. The parents of a student from Dominican Republic qualified the camp as a

“transformative experience” for their daughter, that helped her flourish into an outspoken, independent young lady.

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE PROJECTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD

The final presentation and closing ceremony of the program took place at the City of Doral Government Center, where six finalists presented their projects in front of a panel conformed by Manuel Pila, Ms. Graciela Boria and Alex Swerdlow, a young entrepreneur and Biznovator alumni who at 18 years old is already selling his profitable business venture, after operating it for five years. All projects presented had a strong component of social responsibility. There were ventures focused on solving problems such as housing for low-income population, preventing teenage social exclusion and bullying, supporting local growers and producers or providing affordable health solutions for patients in need. Recipients of honorable mentions were Michael Rodrigues from Miami, Robert Lopez from Dominican Republic (DR) and Andrea Proce from Doral. The three winning projects, who received seed funds to kick start their ventures were: “Fund My Cause” by Ashley Garcia-Crespo from DR, “Roasters and Brewers” by Felipe Colon from Miami and “Ecoligero” by Daniel Vigo, Sebastian Valentin and Roberto Calderon, from DR who won the first place, with their business idea of building affordable housing solutions on poor neighborhoods of their country using recyclable plastic bottles. When Pila announced the winning business plans, he expressed his admiration for the ideas presented and their young creators: “seeing you all here is very inspiring, you are way ahead of the game.” These young people are ready to be agents of positive change for their communities and the world.

Este evento, organizado por la Casimiro Global Foundation y partrocinado por la Ciudad de Doral, FIU, Hellmann Logistics, Starbucks y otras corporaciones fue creado para educar a los jóvenes en el desarrollo de ideas y negocios que apoyen el progreso y beneficien a sus comunidades. Un Biznovator es “un joven emprendedor, con mentalidad empresarial, que introduce métodos, ideas y productos novedosos para el desarrollo y bienestar económico y social.” En esta oportunidad, los participantes en el intenso campamento de dos semanas, vinieron desde China, Republica Dominicana, Mexico y EEUU. Los estudiantes asistieron a cursos donde adquirieron valiosos conocimientos y herramientas para el inicio de negocios, relacionadas con la planificación, financiamiento y mercadeo, Ellos desarrollaron sus ideas y pusieron los conocimientos en práctica para competir por los fondos necesarios para iniciar sus negocios. El programa incluyó visitas a las oficinas de Quest Workspaces, Hellmann Logistics, Cisco y Starbucks; conocieron el Banco de la Reserva Federal y el Ayuntamiento de la Ciudad de Doral, donde fueron recibidos por el Director de Desarrollo Económico Manuel Pila y pudieron conocer al Alcalde Luigi Boria, quien les habló sobre su experiencia como empresario y dueño de negocios. También tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer al Presidente de FIU, el Dr. Mark Rosenberg, quien asistió a la ceremonia de clausura y premiación del programa. Varios estudiantes participaron gracias a una beca otorgada por la Ciudad de Doral, en base a su rendimiento académico y cualidades y valores ciudadanos. Los jóvenes que recibieron esta oportunidad fueron: Gabriela Vilar, Isabel Ríos y Angélica Ballestas de Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School; Andrea Proce de Doral Academy y Francisco Somarriba de Divine Savior Academy.

The broader your world the broader the humor can be.” “Millennial comedy is more multicultural. People know more people from different places and there is humor in that. There is humor into knowing different cultures and feeling that you represent different things for different places and people. We are all exposed to it through the internet. Americans loved my Venezuelan videos and thought they were hilarious. Fifty years ago, something like that would have been funny only for Venezuelans. “We are not only becoming more global but how we consume entertainment is changing very rapidly and that is how comedy is changing as well.”

Her videos on the YouTube channel “The Flama” have reached hundreds of thousands of views, because they are accurate portraits of the life experiences of this generation of multicultural Latinos living in the US. With a degree in English, History and Drama from Tufts University under her belt, and after a stint in Chicago to attend the Comedy Studies Program at The Second City Theater, she has made New York her home without forgetting her Venezuelan roots.

A “GLOBALLY AWARE” KID

She loved growing up in a family where school assignments were discussed along with the headlines in the newspaper. The newscast on the TV was “an accompaniment to our lives, the blurry sound of the news in the background. It was a very international perspective I gained, even being a kid, just being globally aware. I was very lucky to have a very keen perspective as how my problems were not that big as a kid.” The youngest of three siblings and daughter of two eminent Venezuelan academics, Hausmann had “a bit of a nomadic upbringing”, because her family moved from England to Venezuela, then to Washington, Boston and then back to Caracas in 2002, in the midst of the political upheaval the country was going through. She remembers clearly those turbulent times. “The calling out for protest and I remember protesting on the streets. I remember school cancelled. The biggest comparison for me is that I had school cancelled for snow in Boston, but in Caracas I had school cancelled for political upheaval. Living in those 2 realities was so interesting because the latter was tragic but also more interesting, and it brings me back to my parents talking about it every day on our dinner table, talking about those social realities that I could not escape, I could not be in a bubble.”

BEING BICULTURAL, EXPLAINED

“CONTINUE FULFILLING MY PASSION”

She has her Polish, Jewish, grandparents to thank for her European looks, but although she speaks English as an American and Spanish as Venezuelan she had to explain all her life, when she went to a new school, where she came from and why she looked like that. She defines herself as a ‘Jewtina’. “I am a particularly bicultural person and it is a reality so many people of my generation face.” Hausmann considers Latin Americans in the US as the biggest examples of a “globalized world, where identity is broader. The moving back and forth, made me very keen on understanding of the idiosyncrasies of different cultures that many people in those cultures do not notice.” And she has been able to include those observations in the scripts for her videos. “There is something incredibly wonderful on how different we all are but is a sense a brotherhood that made us gravitate towards each other. We all have been through similar things together, leaving our countries, going through immigration processes. My friends here are all attached to their cultures but also feel they belong here.”

Beyond performing on some of the videos in “The Flama”, Hausmann writes, produces and directs many of them, and looks forward to continue creating more of those hilarious pieces. “Being a comedian is multitasking job. I always loved to make people laugh, I always loved to write and I loved to perform. So I went from wanting to be a playwright to wanting to be an actress to wanting to be a movie writer. I have been able to find a position where I am able to do everything I wanted to do.” Being bicultural sometimes makes it hard to find their place in the world for the Millennials, and Hausmann is not strange to that feeling. “Me and people like me are doomed to always miss something. I always felt at home in the Venezuela I grew up in but I feel very identified with the culture in New York, because everyone who lives here comes from somewhere else and had to leave their comfort zone, people who left home to come here for a better life, an opportunity or to follow their dreams. That is a passion, an energy I feel every day here. Right now I feel I belong in New York, it is a great city.” With plenty of possibilities opening up for her, Joanna wants to keep doing what she loves “to do and make people happy. Continue having a job that fulfills all my passions.”

Esas palabras definen el trabajo de Joanna Hausmann, una joven ‘Millenial’ nacida en Inglaterra por casualidad, venezolana por derecho y crianza, y Americana por decisión. Sus videos en el canal de YouTube “The Flama” han alcanzado cientos de miles de visitas, porque muestran un retrato muy acertado sobre las experiencias de esta generación de jóvenes latinos multiculturales que viven en los EEUU. Joanna tiene una licenciatura en Lengua Inglesa, Historia y Drama de la Universidad Tufts, y luego de pasar una temporada en Chicago estudiando en el Programa de Estudios de Comedia en el Second City Theater, finalmente se ha residenciado en New York, sin perder sus raíces venezolanas.

UNA NIÑA CON PERSPECTIVA GLOBAL

Disfrutó una infancia feliz en una familia donde las tareas escolares se discutían junto con los titulares de la prensa. El noticiero de la TV era “un acompañante constante, siempre el sonido de las noticias estaba en el fondo de las conversaciones. Gané una perspectiva global, pendiente de lo que sucedía en el mundo. Tuve mucha suerte de aprender a tener la perspectiva de cómo mis problemas no eran tan grandes como los de los demás.” Es la hija menor de dos eminentes académicos venezolanos. Pasó una infancia “nómada, porque la familia se mudó de Inglaterra a Venezuela. Después nos fuimos a Washington, de ahí a Boston y luego de nuevo a Caracas.” Llegaron en el 2002, durante la fuerte crisis política que el país enfrento en ese momento. Ella recuerda claramente ese tiempo. “Recuerdo los llamados a las marchas y protestas en la calle. Recuerdo que suspendieron las clases. La mayor comparación para mi es que en Boston la escuela la cancelaban por nieve y en Caracas por las protestas políticas. Vivir esas dos realidades fue trágico, pero muy interesante. Recuerdo lo que conversábamos con mis padres todos los días a la hora de la cena. Hablábamos de las realidades del país que no se podían ignorar. Yo no podía estar en una burbuja.”

EXPLICANDO LA BICULTURALIDAD

Joanna Hausmann tiene piel clara, ojos azules y cabello rojizo. Debe su aspecto europeo a sus abuelos judíos polacos. Habla el Inglés como Americana y el Español con acento caraqueño. Toda su vida ha tenido que explicar su origen, su acento y su aspecto. Terminó

definiéndose como “Jutina” una mezcla de Judía con Latina. “Cuando regresé a Venezuela a los 13 años me sentí como en casa, porque no tenía que estar dilucidando con nadie sobre mi identidad. Soy una persona bicultural y esa es una realidad que comparto con muchas personas de mi generación. Hausmann considera que los Latinos en EEUU son los mejores ejemplos de “un mundo globalizado, donde la identidad es amplia. Las constantes mudanzas me permitieron apreciar la idiosincrasia de diferentes culturas, incluso aspectos que ellos mismos no notan.” Esa experiencia y observaciones las ha plasmado en los guiones de los videos que han sido muy populares en el canal de The Flama. “Hay algo maravilloso en nuestras diferencias, pero a la vez es un sentido de hermandad que nos hace acercarnos mutuamente. Todos hemos vivido procesos similares al emigrar y dejar nuestros países. Mis amigos están muy apegados a sus culturas pero también se sienten que pertenecen a este país.”

HACER COMEDIA PARA EDUCAR A LA SOCIEDAD

“La comedia es un gran agente de cambio, porque el humor es universal. Es una manera inteligente de acercarte a las masas, incorporarlas a tu bando y educarlas. Para hacer un humor inteligente se requiere un constante aprendizaje. Debes esforzarte en aprender cada vez más, porque la comedia aparece en los detalles de cada cultura y cuanto más conozcas mejor podrás reflejarlos.” “La comedia para los ‘Milennials’ es algo

multicultural. Conocemos gente de muchos sitios diferentes y en eso hay humor. Hay humor en conocer diferentes culturas y saber que representas diferentes cosas para diferentes personas y lugares. Estamos expuestos a mucha información a través de Internet. Muchos americanos han apreciado mis videos sobre los venezolanos y los han encontrado muy graciosos. Hace 50 años eso no habría sido posible.” “No solamente somos más globales sino que la forma de acceder al entretenimiento cambia muy rápido; así también cambia la forma de hacer comedia.”

“UN TRABAJO QUE ME APASIONA”

Hausmann no solamente actúa en algunos videos de “The Flama”; también escribe, produce y dirige y desea crear muchas piezas divertidas en el futuro. “Ser comediante es un trabajo multidisciplinario. Siempre me ha gustado entretener a los demás, pero también escribir y actuar. Pasé de querer ser dramaturgo, a actriz, a guionista, y he podido encontrar un trabajo donde hago todo lo que siempre quise hacer.” La multiculturalidad dificulta a los “Millennials” encontrar su lugar en el mundo. Hausmann no es ajena a esa impresión. “Mucha gente como yo está destinada a siempre extrañar algo. Me sentía en casa en la Venezuela en que crecí, pero me siento muy identificada con la cultura en New York, porque quienes viven aquí vienen de otras partes, han dejado sus zonas de confort para buscar una vida mejor, oportunidades y realizar sus sueños. Esa pasión, esa energía, las siento aquí a diario. Ahora me siento que pertenezco a New York también.” Con muchas posibilidades ante sus ojos, Joanna quiere seguir su pasión trabajando en lo que ama: “hacer feliz a la gente. Quiero seguir en un trabajo que me apasiona. Esta es una oportunidad para educar a quienes nunca habían conocido a los venezolanos sobre la cultura, y a la vez para apreciar y aprender de las personas que vienen de diferentes lugares.” Ese es un ejemplo que ayudará a muchos a convertirse también en ciudadanos del mundo.

Así lo señala el experimentado estratega en redes sociales, Irrael Gómez. Irrael Gómez, quien el pasado mes de junio estuvo en las instalaciones del San Ignacio College en Doral ofreciendo su charla “El poder de tu marca personal”, explica que, “cada día, pequeñas, medianas y grandes empresas apuestan a la publicidad en las redes sociales, pero que no basta con hacerlo, hay que saber cómo hacerlo para realmente llegar al público que necesitas conectar con tu marca”. La entrada a la conferencia fue totalmente gratuita y también se transmitió a nivel internacional a través de Livestream. “El poder de tu marca personal”, fue la charla ofrecida por Gómez en el San Ignacio College, la cual forma parte del ciclo de conferencias proyectadas internacionalmente por este innovador venezolano. Las otras dos charlas son “Follow me” y “Emocióname y Descúbreme”, todas enfocadas al mercadeo en las redes sociales. Nos explica Gómez que “El poder de tu marca

personal” es un taller que se basa en cómo venderte a ti mismo o también a tu producto. “No se trata solamente de orientación sobre cómo exponerte en los medios convencionales, sino también en la forma adecuada de hacerlo en las redes sociales y particularmente, en Instagram”. “Son diversas las plataformas de servicios y aplicaciones que le permiten a los usuarios tener contacto con otras personas y organizaciones, sin embargo, Instagram es la que está en boga en el mundo, siendo una de las aplicaciones de fotos de mayor uso”, explica Gómez, quien nos refiere a la cuenta de Instagram de su empresa @ streetmarketing, así como a su cuenta de humor, @esen_serio y a su cuenta personal, @irrael. Al referirse a sus otras dos charlas, Gómez manifestó que “Follow me”, sígueme en español, se basa en convertir las redes sociales en oportunidades de negocios y explica las técnicas adecuadas para usar las mismas como una productiva estrategia de mercadeo que vaya más allá de dar a conocer su marca o producto. En cuanto a “Emocióname y Descúbreme”, Gómez indica que esta conferencia la dicta en conjunto con el psicólogo y experto en comportamiento e influencia comunicacional, Alberto Barradas, junto a quien ofrece orientaciones sobre las conductas de las personas. “En esta charla, analizamos el contenido de los mensajes publicitarios, basándonos en las emociones y el comportamiento humano”, agrega Gómez. Ante la masiva asistencia a la charla “El poder de tu marca personal”, Gómez anticipó que regresará a Miami antes de finalizar el año, para continuar ofreciendo orientación sobre mercadeo estratégico a nivel internacional. merica just observed another Independence Day – a time when we celebrate the patriots who won our nation’s freedom and guaranteed our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For today’s patriots who serve in the military, that pursuit of happiness means being able to obtain safe, comfortable and affordable housing for themselves and their families during their tour of duty. Unfortunately, more than 5,000 service members on tour of duty in Miami-Dade County currently do not have access to military housing, forcing them to seek housing on their own in one of the most expensive housing markets in the nation. Low-ranking service members’ families are at the greatest risk, as many of them rely on a single income. Area base commanders are very concerned about this issue. Our service men and women work around the clock, so they need to be reasonably near the base. Soldiers cannot focus on their mission if they are worried about their spouse and children being homeless. These brave men and women need our help so they can do their jobs. As Chairman of the Military Affairs Board (MAB), I am

committed to tackling this important issue. I created a MAB Housing Committee to focus on the problem and have appointed members with expertise in the field to identify possible County-owned properties that can serve as future housing sites. Last month, MAB Director Gustavo Cruz and MAB Housing Committee Co-Chairs’ Diana Gonzalez and Mario Alvarez traveled to Washington D.C. to discuss this challenge with federal elected officials and attend a military community

summit where attendees from around the country shared information about how military installations and surrounding communities are working together to address military housing. With the help of our community partners and the federal government, I’m confident we will achieve the goal of making quality affordable housing available to all our military families. Our modern-day patriots deserve nothing less. The Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board’s mission is to promote, attract and solicit military-related events in Miami-Dade County and advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance, and to refer them to the appropriate agencies. Charla informativa para Padres de Familia e interesados en Coloring Dreams Preschool Carmelina, Directora de Coloring Dreams de Peru, quienes expusieron sobre la filosofía y axiología de este interesante y novedoso proyecto educativo para bebes y niños en edad preescolar. La charla fue muy concurrida, terminando con un conversatorio entre padres quienes comentaron sobre la preocupación para que sus hijos alcanzen un crecimiento adecuado a su edad y un correcto desarrollo para evitar enfermedades crónicas en su adultez, como la hipertensión, obesidad y diabetes entre otros.
