he first Council meeting starting under new schedule (morning session at 10 am, evening session promptly at 6pm) lasted six hours and plenty of varied discussions took place including: the visit of the Mayor of Barranquilla; the planting of 1000 golden trees per year in open areas; a follow up on the municipal library idea; the permit for a painted wall by ESPN and the close-out statement for the Miss Universe Pageant, along with the passing on first reading of an ordinance that stablishes a procedure for submission of items to the Council by advisory boards and on second reading of the “Odor Ordinance”. The proximity of the end of the school year allowed the inclusion of recognitions for academic excellence to several students from Doral schools, but the highlight of the session was a special presentation coming from the office of the President of the United States (POTUS).

Mayo/May 17, 2015

1. Special Presentation from the White House for the Mejia Siblings The special condition of the siblings Sebastian and Alejandro Mejia and the optimism that they and their families maintain facing their health issues have gained the hearts of the community. They filmed a video for President Obama expressing their admiration for him and the diligence of the Council and members of the City staff allowed for it to reach the White House. In response, POTUS sent a heart-warming letter for the Mejia Siblings, expressing admiration to their bravery and ensuring that he and the First Lady will keep them and their family in their thoughts and prayers. Vice Mayor Ruiz arranged for the letter to be delivered to the children within the Council Meeting.

4

Upon receiving the letter Sebastian said “This is the best city. Thank you for helping us.” And their mother showed her deep appreciation for the Council and Staff devoting time to provide her children with this incredibly

Never absent from school, she credits her academic success to her dedication and perseverance. The Mayor commended Ms. Casañas and her family for her dedication and responsibility, setting a true example of citizenry for all the youth in the City of Doral. 3. Recognitions to Relay for Life sponsors and teams Councilwoman Fraga delivered certifications of appreciation to all the teams of City employees who devoted personal volunteer time to participate in the Relay

for Life event. She was recognized and commended for the success of the event that collected more than US$100,000 and counted with the enthusiastic involvement of the community. 4. Recognition for Lifesaving Award Officers Leonel Ochoa, Christopher Fabregas, Jeff Mederos and Danil Ramirez from the City of Doral Police Department received a well-deserved recognition for their team efforts, quick work and effective actions to save the life of a suicidal person who jumped from the bridge on 97th Avenue and 836 in the month of March.

The idea is planting yellow or golden flowered trees and shrubs around the city, that can actually give Doral a “Golden” (Dorado in Spanish) look. It would allow in the future develop other initiatives similar to the “Cherry Blossom tree festival” that occurs in D.C. at the beginning of spring and attracts many visitors. It was approved to initiate conversations with the County to explore the possibility of accessing those funds. 8. Ordinances approved: Among other legislations, the Council passed on First Reading the ordinance that prohibits inappropriate burning in open spaces in the City. Dimensions and details that define the violations are detailed in the text, but in any case will it affect regular house BBQs that comply with the dimensions and safety measures. In Second Reading it was approved the “Odor Ordinance”, that constitutes a first step in controlling odor violations in Doral. It regulates odors that emanate from locations within the city and was not developed to target any specific property or entity.

Resumen reunión de Mayo

Reconocimientos Académicos y sorpresa desde la Casa Blanca en Concejo Municipal de Doral Por Maria Alejandra Pulgar @marialepulgar

E

Mayo/May 17, 2015

Doral Showcased at eMerge Americas

@marialepulgar

T

Mayo/May 17, 2015

he second annual eMerge Americas Conference took place from May 1st to May 5th at the Miami Beach Convention Center and the City of Doral, Florida was present at the exhibition, as part of its Economic Development plan. This conference and Expo provided entities with the right venue to showcase innovative ideas in technology, and entrepreneurs with the right place to create networks, propel investments and promote Miami at a national and international scale as the tech hub of the Americas. Advancements in telecommunications, robotics and biotechnology, along with the presence of innovators showcasing their ideas for the future of the use of technology in education, medicine and government made of this event the best opportunity for introducing the advantages Doral has to offer to those entities interested on investing or even relocating to the city. Along with the exhibition of resources where Doral was represented, the conference was divided in four tracks: eMerge Americas Summit: conferences and panels on how new technologies drive innovation across industry sectors such as health care, entertainment, education and government. Women, Innovation and Technology (WIT): to educate and inspire women to embrace the power of creativity and entrepreneurship through technology. eGov: presentations about technology and innovation applied to government and the development of Smart Cities. Expo Stage: especial trainings for emerging entrepreneurs

10

One of the keynote speakers of the event, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Mr. Julian Castro, said about his participation in the conference that “there are not many events that feature both Pitbull and Deepak Chopra along with tech leaders across America. Here I see more than entrepreneurs and innovators, I see the future. This is truly a special gathering and I am honored with the invitation.” It was a world class event for leaders, businesses and areas at the forefront of technology and future

development; the perfect place to promote an emerging location as the City of Doral.

THE CITY OF DORAL EXHIBITION BOOTH

Manuel Pila, Economic Director for the City of Doral who was in charge of the participation of the city at the event, explained that the exhibition booth represents the building boom in the city. “It is made to look like a building, a modern building. It is three sided, ten feet tall and each side six feet.” Very well located in a coveted corner, the booth was right next to the exhibition of the development Downtown Doral, and the logo of the City could be seen from afar, attracting many visitors, interested on learning about the municipality. Videos produced in-house by Creative Producer Alejandro Renteria where shown continuously, telling “different aspects of the story of Doral, from the e-city initiatives, the Trolley tracker, Doral 311 and the different ways the city interacts, to the special events that have taken place and the development that is going on” shared Pila. After an investment of US$ 15,000 to participate as exhibitors at the event, this initiative wants to “attract companies willing to move to Doral. We are

interested on attracting more of the tech market to come to the city.” Among the staff from the City present at the event along with Pila were Eddie Rojas (City Manager), Danny Espino (City Attorney), Adam Temple (Code Compliance Director), Michael Jones (Webmaster and designer, who designed the booth) and Alex Tejerizo (Grant writer for the office of Economic Development). Also in attendance were Mayor Luigi Boria and Felix Murillo, Secretary of the Economic Development Advisory Board. “We want to attract new businesses that expand the pallet of what Doral is all about, what our business community is. New businesses from the tech industry are businesses smart, clean, that attract a new generation, people that I think would enjoy the ‘work, live play’ aspect we are building and hopefully would stick around and grow with the city. This is a great way to reach out and attract talent to our city, speak to them about opportunities we have not only on infrastructure, but space and location. This is a great opportunity to reach to people and tell our story.” said Pila.

U.S. SHUD JULIAN CASTRO EGOV KEYNOTE ADDRESS

United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (U.S. SHUD) Mr. Julian Castro delivered the keynote address for kicking off the eGov portion of the Summit. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, introduced Castro to the audience, praising his experience as Mayor of San Antonio, Texas and the strengths he has brought to his service at a higher office: “I believe mayors make great cabinet secretaries” said Gimenez, alluding to the many challenges they confront every day to better serve their communities. He also explained that he looks forward to “continue to work with leaders that embrace technology to solve problems in our cities and improve the relationship and confidence level between residents, businesses and their government. That is what government in the 21st century should be.” Mr. Castro’s speech focused on the importance of

“Technology has the power to enhance how we work, learn and live. I am not here to tell you what is next but to ask for your help to ensure that every person has the chance to access to technology and to thrive in our 21st century global economy. This region has shown it is possible. Our challenge is to ensure that everyone can participate and everyone in this room has a stake on making it happen. We got to work together to prosper together.” Then he proceeded to explain the three pillars the US government has determined to achieve the expansion of digital opportunity to all Americans: 1. Increase access to training to give access to better jobs: “We need to fill technology jobs with qualified people for the sake of our economy. That is why the President launched the initiative TechHire that brings together employers, community colleges and other partners to rapidly train employees in just a few months. More than 20 communities are part of TechHire so far and the numbers are growing. It will benefit families, businesses and technology industry for generations to come.” 2. Giving folks of all background access to technology: “It is no longer a luxury but a necessity. People are denied a possibility we take for granted. The President has challenged the nation to connect 99% of students in schools and libraries to broadband by 2018. I look forward to working with leaders like you to face this challenge. Together we can shape a future where no one is left behind.” 3. Using technology to transform the way the public sector does business: “The President has been determined to bring the Federal Government to the modern times. He launched the US Digital Service, a new department to comprise leaders and include problem solvers, doers and makers striving to make government better so all of us can benefit. Mastering technology is one of the greatest challenges facing the government. The Digital Service is always looking for new talent. You have the chance to make government better and I urge you to answer that calling.” “All of you in this room are at the forefront of knowledge. We are building a modern government that works better. I ask you to use your imagination to make an impact so others can dream and achieve as well. A future where digital opportunity reaches us all” concluded Castro.

MDCPS SUPERINTENDENT ON INNOVATION IN EDUCATION

On the second day of the eGov Summit, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools Dr. Alberto Carvalho participated on the “High Impact innovation for the knowledge-based economy” presentation. Carvalho commended Mr. Manny Medina, founder of eMerge Americas, for his effort on putting together an event that positions Miami as a technology hub for the continent. “What he has done is very important” because it has involved education on the investment conversations for innovation.

meditation, exercise, control of emotions and adequate nutrition have in the physical body. He concluded his presentation inviting innovators to continue working on creating metrics to help individuals measure their levels of wellbeing, as that capacity leads to happier, healthier nations and consequently social justice and an improved world.

“WE ARE GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION”

Luigi Boria, Mayor of the City of Doral, attended USSHUD Castro’s conference and other presentations on the two days of the event. He expressed his satisfaction of leading a city that spearheads the use of technology in government. “We are one of the fastest growing municipalities in Florida and we are aligned with the President’s views on the use of technology and initiatives that help on the transformation of government. We have to continue following this path. We are going in the right direction.” “My objective is to showcase our city around the world. I think it is important that we become a digital city, where everybody has internet access. Our focus should be to continue being pioneers and to incorporate the latest technologies to continue with our progress” concluded Boria.

“Technology is important to our economy; we are a tech hub, an innovation hub that is nationally and internationally recognized.” “Miami-Dade is seen more to become an internationally recognized tech hub and the Miami Dade Public Schools is the highest performing district in America. Economic diversity and advancement needs to be supported by a powerful educational system.” About the presence of Doral as an exhibitor on the eMerge Expo, Carvalho commented that “Doral is an extremely supportive community with high demand parents who care deeply about their children, matched up with municipal concern for quality of life and school board investment in high quality education programs. I think the future is bright for Doral.”

OTHER PRESENTATIONS AT THE SUMMIT

The highlight of the second morning of the event was the Keynote by Dr. Deepak Chopra, founder of The Chopra Center, about the evolution of technology to develop tools and metrics that can determine the impact of emotions and thoughts in the physical body. “The body is a process in a bigger system.” At his institute in California, Dr. Chopra uses his Self-Directed Biological Transformation (SDBT) program to improve the wellbeing of his patients, digitally monitoring the influence that sleep,

Mayo/May 17, 2015

Mayo/May 17, 2015

oral Central Park is the largest park in the city of Doral and it hosts important events such as the United States Independence Day celebration, which attracts a massive crowd. Its green open spaces and panoramic lake views are ideal for meetings and activities of various kinds, this is why many organizations request the permit to use the facilities for their special events, but many of these activities imply the sale of alcoholic beverages. It is very common that many of these activities involve the sale of certain liquors, both to provide additional entertainment for the attendees and as a way for the hosting organizations to collect more funds. As a City, it would mean a way to take even more advantage of the park’s spectacular resources, and for Doral it would translate in even more recognition for its variety of events. Until now, and just like in all other parks of the City, the sale of liquor at Doral Central Park was forbidden, nevertheless, the members of the City Council decided to asses a pilot plan that will allow the sale of liquors during certain events, as an additional service of the park. Mayor Boria explains that due to the countless requests to the City, it was decided to set a pilot plan, but they will only be able to assess the results after the first event. “Obviously these permits wont be granted lightly, we will analyze the type of activity, number of people expected to attend, amount of

time the plan is carried out without incidents, reputation of the organization behind the events and logically the compliance with the restrictions set by the law”. On this matter, councilman Pete Cabrera states “this project is a pilot proposal to allow the sale of liquor in Doral Central Park, at important events that benefit the community and improve the quality of live in our city, when requested by the organizers of a specific activity, as long as the activity in question has been carried out for over 15 years without any incidents”. Councilwoman Ana María Rodríguez considers that this pilot project could be either very successful or a huge failure and that the outcome will depend on the behavior of those attending the events. “We want to offer an additional service at this park so we are able to host different types of events, but it is definitely a decision that has to be under constant assessment because alcohol abuse may bring terrible consequences”. Councilwoman Christi Fraga, who was not present at the time the pilot project was proposed at the Council, claims that she would have definitely opposed it, just as she did last year, when it was also suggested. “Parks are places for family entertainment, and selling liquor goes against the message we want to pass on as a city. I believe it is wrong if they allow it in other cities and the fact that they do so does not mean we must imitate them”.

THE RESIDENTS GIVE THEIR OPINION LUZPILAR MEDINA, resident of Doral and

mother of three, supports the sale of alcoholic beverages at Doral Central Park, because she believes that the issues created because of alcohol consumption are directly related to the amount of restrictions set upon it. “If people know they can purchase wine or beer during these activities they won’t feel so eagerly about consuming it”.

BEATRIZ GALINDO, mother of three children, believes that the problem is not the event, nor the organizers, nor the park, nor the liquor, for her, the problem lies on the people. “In order to apply such a ruling, first you would have to carry out a civic awareness campaign on alcoholic beverages consumption, as there are many people who do not know how to control themselves when drinking alcohol”. ALBENIZ PALMA, father of two young children, agrees with the project as long as two conditions are met. “First, the event has to be well organized and the sale of liquor must be part of the objective of the event; secondly, it should also depend on the type of alcoholic beverage that will be offered, for example, if it’s only beer and wine it would be fine because you can even purchase those liquors at a gas station”. KIM DADDY, who also has two young children, believes this is a matter that should be under constant assessment, evaluating the kind of people attending the event and the type of alcoholic beverage to be sold. “For example, if it’s an activity were no small children would participate and were they would only sell wine and beer, I think it would be fine. Likewise, the time of the event could also be a factor to take into consideration”. MIRKO PICCONE, father of a teenager, lives

and works in Doral, and also opposes the sale of liquor at Doral Central Park during special activities, for he believes that alcohol motivates an unsafe environment, common to isolated groups of trouble makers. “If they sell liquor in the park it would no longer be a safe place for our kids”.

HENRY MISRI, father of two young children,

ANA PICCONE, mother of two children,

who believes in sports as an essential activity for children’s development, disagrees with this project. “Parks are places to carry out sports activities, to entertain our children in open spaces, they’re no place for, in the best case scenario, kids seeing other people drinking alcohol”.

supports the pilot project, as long as the events in which they sell liquor, do not take place at the same time as the sports activities. “I believe celebrations would be more entertaining and varied for the attendants, we would take more advantage of the park and more people would visit our city”.

EZEQUIEL ZAMORA, father of two, does not

agree with the sale of liquor at Doral Central Park because he believes parks are places meant exclusively for family entertainment and sadly people tend to abuse when it comes to liquor. “Selling alcoholic beverages during certain activities would mean they would have to increase the number of police enforcement on these events in order to keep people under control, and policemen are already scarce in Doral to have a large group of them monitoring a specific event”.

MISS UNIVERSE: Success or Failure for Doral? Edda Pujadas

@ epujadas

hile some believe that the Miss Universe was only an expense for the city of Doral, others assure that it was a complete success in terms of our image as a place to live or invest and that it meant an important budget saving in marketing. These opinions arose after the Miss Universe’s public expense report and the worldwide media impact report were made public. According to the expense report, the investment made by the city of Doral on the beauty pageant, reached 1.5 million dollars, while the media analysis shows that the kind of image exposure achieved along the event would have required a marketing investment of over the 9.5 million dollars. One thing is certain, since September 2014, when the city Council approved to host the Miss Universe in Doral, the 2.5 million dollars to be invested, became a matter of conflict, even though they expected the support of local business owners and investors to contribute with the payment of the millionaire figure.

IT WAS AN EXPENSE

“The only thing the Miss Universe left for Doral was a huge expense”, claims councilwoman Christi Fraga who opposed the decision to carry out the beauty pageant in the city since the moment it was approved, as she disagreed with terms and conditions of the beauty pageant. I want to make it clear that I have negotiation. “We actually spent 1.7 million dollars, because we nothing against this kind of events, but I believe that we provided 200 thousand dollars more for additional should be setting the city’s priorities straight in regards events, banners and legal expenses related to the to it’s needs and the distribution of it’s resources”, pageant. To this sum we must add the fact that the claimed Fraga. “Even though this time we’re not financing the event, organization of the pageant had originally agreed to we will be using our human resources, reimburse the city certain amount of in marketing and support to find money, but then they decided not to sponsors, when just like it happened do so because the contestants had with the Miss Universe we don’t even to participate in more activities than have an adequate venue to carry out those previously planned”. such an event. Another of the irregularities related “Our Department for Economic to the Miss Universe as reported by Development can’t keep on spending councilwoman Fraga was the delay time looking for resources to support of the pageant’s organization to beauty pageants, instead it must summit the expense report; they were focus on the actual economic growth supposed to do so 15 days after of the city, we’re at a point were I ask the event, instead they presented it myself if we want a city of misses or 72 days later, after Fraga informed a city to live, work, play and learn?” them that the city would sue the claimed councilwoman Fraga. organization if they didn’t provide the The opinion of Christi Fraga is corresponding report. Norberto Spangaro shared by Mr. Norberto Spangaro, “What amazes me the most is that we’re not yet over the whole Miss Universe chapter, member of the Doral Community Coalition organization, and we’re already thinking about supporting another who restates his position from a few months ago when

he claimed that the City Council approved to host the Miss Universe pageant in an irresponsible and hasty manner. “The residents of Doral were lied to, as they assured us that with the contribution of investors and private businesses they would be able to collect the 2.5 million dollars needed for the event and the City wouldn’t have to incur in any expense, but this was not true, as they were only able to collect one million dollars”, explains Spangaro. “The only one who benefited from the Miss Universe was the Trump Organization. For Doral and it’s residents this event was only the evidence of an irresponsible act, marked by overspending of public funds and a sequence of legal irregularities”, claims this community leader who believes we are wasting the money we need to maintain the city. “I don’t know why, those who defend the hosting of Miss Universe, insist on pointing out that this type of events help project the image of Doral, if Doral already has a good image, we just have to remember that it was chosen as the second best city to live in all of the United States of America, without the need of misses walking along our streets”. “I hope the story doesn’t repeat itself with the new proposal to host the Miss Florida pageant. We are a residential city not a touristic one, if there is something we must invest in it’s not beauty pageants, but areas such as the logistics industry which is our economic strength”, states Spangaro.

A GREAT SUCCESS

“The Miss Universe was a great success for our city”. As described by the mayor Luigi Boria, who explains that, of the 2.5 million dollars needed to sponsor the beauty pageant, the city only invested 1.5 million, the other million, was collected among investors and local businesses, which meant a budget saving for the Mayor’s Office. According to Boria “Marketing wise we had a worldwide exposure which other way would have cost a lot over the 1.5 million dollars and wouldn’t have resulted in the positive impact the Miss Universe did, allowing us to show the world the qualities of our city as a great place to live, invest and simply entertain oneself”. Mayor Boria further explained, that according to the worldwide media impact report, carried out by the advertising agency Zimmerman of Tallahassee, if we have had to pay for the campaign resulting from the Miss Universe, the city would have spent 9 million 555

thousand 289 dollars. This same report shows that California, New York and Florida, were the states where Miss Universe had greater impact media wise, and the countries with a larger market penetration were United States, Canada, Colombia, Venezuela, Italy, Philippines, Korea and the Arab Emirates. “I believe nobody can deny how important it is that Doral achieved this kind of recognition among all of these countries and that this projection of our image will contribute with our residential and commercial development, attracting other events of the kind, such as the Miss Florida”, claimed Doral’s leader. Boria made it clear that there is no budget Mayor Luigi Boria, Miss Universe and Councilman Pete Cabrera quote assigned for Miss Florida and that for this particular event the idea is only to assist supported the financial contribution of the city to the with the sponsors’ search, as there are many business owners in our city interested in investing in Miss Universe pageant. Nevertheless, after being part of the experience, I recognize that the event had such a the projection and advertisement of Doral’s image. On the other hand, councilman Pete Cabrera positive impact that it is difficult to rate its great value”. “Therefore I congratulated my colleagues for their explained, “When I returned to the Council in November, I publicly expressed that based on the vision. Today I am glad to see that the financial analysis information presented at the time I wouldn’t have carried out by Antonio Villamil, a worldwide recognized

City | Ciudad economist, showed that the return for the City of Doral was 26 times greater than the investment”, added councilman Cabrera. Councilwoman Ana María Rodríguez enthusiastically spoke about the success of the Miss Universe for the city, as it gave Doral a worldwide projection, and this was one of the objectives of the event, for even though they were unable to collect the entire 2.5 million dollars, she believes the investment was more than justified. “Not only was Doral the center of international attention, we were also able to show the whole world the qualities of our city, as well as its possibilities regarding housing, academic, commercial and business development,” added Ana María Rodríguez. “The good image we projected during the Miss Universe is now opening us the doors for many other opportunities, such as the Miss Florida, which I personally supported before the Council because not only are they interested in carrying out their pageant in Doral, but they’re also interested in moving their administrative offices to our city and that would bring us direct economic benefits”, explained councilwoman Rodríguez.

MISS UNIVERSO: Éxito o Fracaso para Doral? Edda Pujadas @ epujadas

M

@marialepulgar

tephanie Duno is graduating on the top 5% of the Class of 2015 at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH) next June 2nd. Her dreams of becoming a Veterinarian are closer than ever to be a reality, because she is one of this year’s recipients of the $40.000 scholarship granted by the GE-Reagan Foundation. This represents an extraordinary achievement, not only for her and her family, but also for her school and the community. Out of 13,000 applicants nationwide, she became one of the only 20 seniors selected as recipients. With every passing year, alumni from RRDSH move on to showcase outside the city’s border the high quality of education they received at the public school system in Miami-Dade County, especially in the City of Doral. Stephanie was recognized for her academic excellence with a special certificate during the March Council Meeting. The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship program rewards students who demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship, all of those qualities that Stephanie has shown all her life. Besides this important recognition to her academic success and commitment to community service, she also has been awarded grants and scholarships from several institutions. It will help her pay for her education towards her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, a goal she has very strongly set in her mind.

Her family calls Stephanie “Nia”. She was born in Venezuela and moved to the US when she was six years old. Nia has always called Doral her home: “Growing up in Doral, I love that everyone is really close to each other, it is really safe. It is going to be a very beautiful city. I hope to bring people to see how beautiful it is when I come back to visit from college.” When she arrived to the US she did not speak any English and had a hard time getting used to the new context. Once she learned the language and assimilated the culture, her talents blossomed. She is a completely bilingual and bicultural girl, who loves dancing and singing and is very close to her younger brother. “Nia is a very well-rounded girl” says her mother Jessika Chacon; “beyond getting good grades, she is very caring, happy and outgoing. Always respectful and proper on her behavior, she is also resilient and focused to achieve her goals. She is a very optimistic person and what I admire most from her is her contagious joy, always trying to make people smile.” An avid reader and writer, her favorite subject is science, especially all themes related to the wellbeing of animals. Her caring nature has since childhood geared her towards taking care of all little critters she found in her surroundings. One of her fondest childhood memory is when her father used to take her to a zoo. S h e credits that experience as the spark that ignited her curiosity to learn more about being a veterinarian. The opportunity to intern at a local animal clinic gave her a first-

hand experience on what would be like to work on that field and she loved it. The activity complemented her community work as the international ambassador for a Venezuelan non-profit called Huellitas de amor (Paw prints of Love) dedicated to creating awareness about animal abuse. Stephanie focused on doing fundraiser activities to provide the foundations with the resources for conducting vaccinating events and neutering campaigns for animals in the streets. She also developed the Pawssible Initiative, a finalist on the Biznovator Competition in Doral, as a program to integrate the rescue of abandoned animals with the inclusion of teenagers who have been bullied in school. Her academic success along with her commitment to improve her community with these service projects have won her many accolades and backed her application for scholarships. Keys to successfully apply for scholarships Nia received letters of admission from eight colleges nationwide and has been awarded almost US$60,000 in scholarships, including the GE-Reagan and the P.L.A.Y. from the Pet Life Style in California. Besides her good grades and community service projects that have been innovative and creative, Nia’s involvement in clubs and organizations within the school helped her develop the leadership and citizenship skills that made the difference on her college and scholarship applications. She served as secretary for Student Government and was inducted to the National Honor Society. Her very compelling and articulate essays written to back her applications showcased the impact of her work, projects and ideas. It made a great difference to gain her the results she expected. She took the time to prepare her applications carefully and document all her achievements. Nia’s advice for high school students looking forward to successfully apply for scholarships is to “stay on the game, apply for as many as possible, have all your essays organized. If you are not selected keep trying and find scholarships for all your abilities. Find as many as you can and apply.” But the most important thing is “Holding a positive attitude. I am not the smartest fish in the sea but I think my attitude helps a lot. I keep studying, I have a positive attitude, I keep trying and there is always a possibility for success. As long as you keep trying you are going to reach your goals.” For her attitude and resilience, Stephanie credits her mom: “She is my inspiration. My mother is very determined, and I am very determined too. I want to follow her steps, she is a really strong woman, and all she has done in this country she has done for us. I want her to be proud.” Stephanie Duno certainly has made her family, h e r school and the whole community proud with her achievements. She looks forward after finishing h e r career to opening her “own institution. I hope I can expand my projects and people can take them to other parts of the world.”

Aquí he crecido y logrado mis metas.

Ending the sourge of Veteran Homelessness By Jose “Pepe” Diaz

A

Miami-Dade County Commissioner, District 12, Miami-Dade County Military Liaison and Chairman of the Military Affairs Board

nyone who has put on a uniform to fight for this country and defend our way of life should never have to face the tragedy of homelessness. But sadly, many veterans in America today are living on the streets because they don’t have a place to stay. The Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board, which I’m proud to serve as Chairman, takes this problem seriously. That’s why, for the second year in a row, we supported the recent South Florida Homeless Veterans Stand Down to identify homeless veterans in our community and assist them with needed services, including obtaining government identification, MiamiDade County Transit Patriot Passes, legal services, medical care, employment opportunities, and ultimately, housing. The causes of homelessness among veterans are varied. Many Americans return from combat duty with physical and/or psychological conditions that prevent them from getting good jobs or reintegrating easily into civilian life. Substance abuse and dependency also frequently play a role. Whatever the cause, every case of veteran homelessness is equally tragic. I have personally witnessed veterans living on the streets. These veterans cover the age and battlefront spectrum – from Vietnam-era vets to those who have

served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Whether young or old, our veterans deserve better. They did their part; we need to do ours. City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado has been pivotal in this mission and over the last number of years, a host of agencies and organizations have been joining forces with us to help end veteran homelessness in our community. Among these agencies are the MiamiDade County Homeless Trust led by Ron Book, the Miami VA, Miami-Dade County Public Housing and Community Development, the City of Miami Beach Public Housing, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, the Advocate Program, Operation Sacred Trust, made possible by Carrfour Supportive Housing, City of Miami Homeless Assistance Program and the Florida Veterans Foundation. So much has been accomplished by working together that we expect to reach the goal of eliminating veteran homelessness in Miami-Dade County by the end of this year! And it couldn’t come too soon. As First Lady Michelle Obama stated recently in New Orleans: “Even one homeless veteran is an outrage; and when we have tens of thousands of veterans who don’t have somewhere to go when it rains, that is a stain on our nation.” Thank God we appear to be on the verge of ending

veteran homelessness in Miami-Dade County, but our resolve that this scourge never rears its ugly head again in our community must never slacken. Our returning veterans continue to face challenging times, and we can’t allow economic circumstances to relegate them to poverty and homelessness. It’s our job to help them get back on their feet and know they are not forgotten. My commitment to the cause of doing right by our veterans will never end, but we need the entire community’s support to be successful. You can do your part by helping us identify homelessness among our veteran population. If you either know a homeless veteran or know of one, please contact Gustavo Cruz, Director of the Military Affairs Board at guscruz@ miamidade.gov or (305) 375-4493. The Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board’s mission is to promote, attract and solicit military-related events in MiamiDade County and advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance, and to refer them to the appropriate agencies. Code Red Alert System Traffic Accidents and Road Closures

44

The City of Doral Police Department will be issuing alerts for traffic accidents and road closures in Doral for participants in the Code Red Alert Messaging system. The City of Doral encourages residents to sign up to receive Emergency Messages as well as to the Weather Warning System, an automated severe weather alerting service. The CodeRED system provides Doral officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire city in case of an emergency. All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number. Residents and business owners must register for CodeRed. Required information includes a street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes) for location purposes and a primary phone number. Additional phone numbers, email and text addresses may also be entered. CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information. The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes.

HOW TO SET YOUR SALARY AS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER

If you could set your own salary, how much would you pay yourself? That’s the question more and more entrepreneurs encounter today. For the many small startups and family-owned businesses in the marketplace, the issue of how to determine a salary as an owner or even as a sole proprietor is a tricky, yet important, one to tackle. Business owners should keep the following considerations in mind when deciding how much the boss should earn.

SURVEY THE FIELD

Studying the competition is a smart way to get a sense of what people in similar positions earn from companies in the same industry. The Small Business Association offers income statistics on its website that provide reliable averages for earnings across a range of occupations. An average, adjusted for factors like geographic area, years of experience, and time commitment, provides a good sense of what is reasonable for a salary now, or as a future target once the business turns a profit.

DON’T SKIP YOUR OWN PAYCHECK

Mayo/May 17, 2015

When a business is in its early stages, it might seem tempting for managers to pay all the bills first, even if it means nothing is leftover to pay themselves. This is a harmful habit, for several reasons. First, it’s important for the owner to earn a salary so he or she will have personal savings built up for the future. What if the business fails, or the economy experiences a downturn? If they’ve been receiving a paycheck, there

46

are reserves to support their family or to invest back in the business. Second, budgeting for an owner’s salary establishes solid financial practices for the future, especially if selling the company is a possibility. Investors and potential purchasers will want to see that there is room in the budget to pay leadership when that person is no longer also the founder. Furthermore, because paying oneself reduces the company’s overall profit, it can have certain tax benefits, which leads to the next consideration: taxes.

IMPACT ON TAXES

The IRS has its own procedures for how business owners should compensate themselves from their business based on the company’s organizational structure. A tax attorney or accountant is a valuable resource for adhering to regulations and filing the proper forms to report payments. A financial pro will also take stock of all the factors that affect an owner’s salary, such as taxes, operating costs, loans, marketing budgets, and employees, among many other variables, to determine a fair amount. Many entrepreneurs are wary of overpaying themselves—but underpayment is just as problematic. Contact us today to make sure you are putting your business, and your family, on sound financial footing.
