Developing Trade and Employment in Doral The vice-mayor of Doral, Christi Fraga, is coordinating a project to obtain funds from the state of Florida that will promote businesses in Doral. Edda Pujadas, @epujadas

ith the purpose of developing trade and local employment, the Mayor of Doral is working in a project to obtain funds, for small and medium-sized businesses in our city, through the Department of Economic Opportunities of the State of Florida. This was informed by the vice-mayor of Doral, Christi Fraga, who explained that she, together with lobbyists, lawyers and the city manager is responsible for developing this program that aspires to obtain between 100,000 and 200,000 dollars to be distributed among businesses in our city. Once the draft is ready, it will be submitted to the Council members for its review. “The idea is to involve everyone and that we present an accurate project that meets the requirements in order to get the approval and allocation of these state funds,” explained Fraga. “This is a long-term project, because we’re just doing the initial studies, so I think that it will take a little more than a year. However, I believe that the results will be highly positive for all residents of our city, because the direct benefit will be not only for the business owner, but also for employees and consumers,” explained Fraga.

These federal funds, which are granted through the State of Florida, aim to stimulate local businesses and at the same time, encourage the creation of new jobs. They would be handed over to the city of Doral, once the draft submitted by the mayor is approved.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT

For Fraga it is vital that this project take into consideration the real necessities of the city. “The idea is to help finance those businesses that meet the demands of our citizens either in entertainment,

shopping or health services, for example.” The vice-mayor expresses that what is important is not the goods or services that will profit from these funds, the real concern is that this activity is a necessity for those living in the Doral, the ultimate goal is to benefit the whole community. Another important factor to take into account in this project is the support of local employment. “We really would like companies that are going to make use of these funds, to employ a high percentage of our residents, because the essence is to support the productive cycle of Doral.” “If we get that a significant number of residents of Doral also work in our city, it will ultimately be beneficial because of an increase in productivity for their time, decrease in cost of gasoline and maintenance of vehicles and an increase in the use of other means of transportation, such as, the bicycle or the trolley,” said Christi Fraga, explaining that this would improve the quality of life of our residents. According to Fraga, this is a process that could be divided into three major stages: the first would

be the elaboration of the project, the second the approval and allocation of funds by the Department of Economic Opportunities in the State of Florida, and the third, the distribution of these funds between businesses that qualify. In the primary stage of the project, Fraga pointed out that they have not yet defined the necessary requirements to request these funds, but 5,000 and 10,000 dollars could be allocated to each city merchant. “This is an initiative that involves a large commitment of all parties because we have to respond to the State of Florida for the funds allocated. Businesses have to explain the use of the allocated money, demonstrate that it was actually used for a specific purpose and achieve a preset goal”. For his part, the Mayor of Doral will also be accountable of these funds before the State and if the original goals of these selected businesses are not met, the money has to be returned. Fraga insists that it is important to work together for the appropriate use of these funds. “This program of concessions for small businesses, whose name is Small Business Grant Program, is an opportunity to develop the economy of our city, so we’re working hard to prepare a project where they clearly translate the business needs, the labor of our citizens and the manner in which these resources would help”, added the vice-mayor of Doral.

Los comerciantes tienen que explicar el uso que le darán al dinero asignado, demostrar que efectivamente lo emplearon para ese fin y trazarse una meta que deben cumplir”. Por su parte, la Alcaldía de Doral también será responsable ante el Estado por el dinero asignado a cada comerciante y de no cumplirse las metas establecidas inicialmente debe responder por ese dinero y devolverlo, por lo que Fraga insiste en que es importante aunar esfuerzos para el adecuado aprovechamiento de estos fondos.

“Our Lady’s Workshop”: a labour of Love By: Maria Alejandra Pulgar

oing from intention to action is not always easy; however the women that work in “Our Lady’s Workshop” in Doral have made it happen. In less than two years they have evolved, from merely crafting and distributing Holy Rosaries to support the propagation of this beautiful Catholic practice of prayer and meditation, into a mission for helping those in need. “Our Lady’s Workshop” is a labour of Love. Graciela Escalona, founder of the “Workshop” in Doral, explained that the initiative of these groups making rosaries started in Argentina, with the aim of spreading devotion to the Holy Rosary. “The idea is that no home stops praying the Rosary for the lack of it” Graciela learned the process of making rosaries at her praying group in Key Biscayne and two years ago proposed the activity during one of the weekly meetings of the women who have attended the Emmaus Retreat at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Parish of in Doral. As a process of discernment, it was not easy to

overcome her fear of public speaking in that assembly to invite people to participate in making rosaries. Internally she was questioning what she was doing, because she did not have too much material to work with, but went ahead and invited everyone the next day to her house. “By the Grace of God, eight women answered the call and I had enough material so that we all could work. Thus began Our Lady’s Workshop in Doral.” The initial objective of gifting rosaries to those who needed them turned into a mission when they decided to ‘adopt’ an orphanage in Colombia to benefit from the money raised from the donations given by those who got the rosaries . “I felt in my heart that the Lord was telling me, ‘ Prayer and Action ‘ and I did not understand. Finally, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, where I clarify all my doubts, I realized that the product

to make rosaries are committed to participate and work, because the Workshop in turn has the responsibility to provide monthly for the institution adopted. “There must be a real commitment, a self-imposed obligation to come to work, because there are children and elderly who depend on what we produce in the Workshop to have food in their plates and a shelter. It is only a matter of joining mind, heart and action.”

The process of crafting Rosaries at “Our Lady’s Workshop”

Carmen Olmos y Graciela Escalona of our work had to be entirely for the needy” says Graciela. “This is a lay movement of women committed to the mission of helping others. When I saw the immense material needs in Colombia’s nursing homes and orphanages I decided that the workshop would adopt the institution’ Divine Infancy of Jesus, Joseph and Mary’, located in a poor neighborhood of the city of Medellin”. During one of her mission trips with the organization “Seeds of Soul’ Graciela met there with the nun that runs the orphanage, with very few resources, giving shelter and education to 160 children. Thereafter, all other Workshops that have been founded (in Aventura, Brickell, Key Biscayne, Miami’s Cathedral, and others in Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina and Venezuela) started by choosing which institution to adopt to benefit from the donations received from distributing the rosaries. Carmen Olmos, a member of the Workshop who helps Graciela in the operation of the Workshop in Doral explains: “When a Workshop is created, the initial materials are provided by a sponsoring Workshop and after that they are self-sufficient.” Whatever monies received is divided to buy more material and to send to the institution adopted. “There is great need in Latin America” continues explaining Carmen. “Here in the U.S. it is easier to get a large company to help those in need, but in our countries orphanages and nursing homes lack of many things and what we send is a great relief for them. None of us gets paid for our work in the Workshop. We love what we do, so we offer our effort to benefit others.” Participation in the workshop is not a social activity; it is a real job, where volunteers who attend weekly

“There reigns great peace and harmony during our workday, for the Lord is there. In that we trust” says Graciela. And all those who have been working in the Workshop report having received great spiritual benefit for joining the activity. “When people acquire our rosaries they are doing a good deed, nothing is for our personal benefit. If a person buys it because thought it was cute or fashionable it is fine. At the end of the day the objective is that everybody who wants a rosary is able to have one in her hands.” Rosaries crafted at “Our Lady’s Workshop” can be distinguished for two characteristics: they have three little bells, representing the Holy Trinity, near the cross; and at the center of the rosary there is a medal tied up, that can be the image of a Saint or Our Lady. The medal is chosen after making a prayer with the intention that it can bring a message of peace, love or comfort to its recipient. All rosaries are different and are made while praying. In the workshop the day starts by consecrating the work with a prayer request “for the needs of the people who will buy the rosaries manufactured and our promise that we will continue praying daily, for life, for those people and their families, regardless of them being believers or non-believers. In everyday life people sometimes get complicated to devote time to prayer, but they can trust that every day there is a group in “Our Lady Workshop” who is praying for their needs. “ Voluntaries pray, thread beads and tie knots with humility and patience. “Making a rosary is difficult until you bend your will. We work our patience and our humility. It is very difficult to be humble enough to accept criticism and mend mistakes” describes Graciela, because the quality control process of the final products is very strict. “Our question of quality control is ‘ Would you give that rosary to Our Lord Jesus? ‘ and more than once we have had to re-do

it until it is perfect, because Our Lord is in each of us and we have to see it from that point of view; it is Our Lord who is receiving the Rosary in the person who gets it.” “It would be great if every day people could raise a prayer to heaven for all humanity, because we are all brothers and sisters, we really are. It does not have to be long, a short prayer is fine: ‘Lord please help us, protect us, protect our world, thanks for everything’. The world would be so different! Saying thank you is very important too, even when we do not get what we asked for, because it means the Lord is protecting us. If it is not for my sake He is not going to give it to me. We have to pray asking but also giving thanks” reflects Graciela. At the end of the day, all rosaries made are consecrated to Our Lady, before being packaged for distribution. It is a beautiful and intense work. Very thorough, but very rewarding and this is evident in the joy that manifest the participants in the activity “We love what we do so we offer our work to benefit others,” says Carmen.

Holy Rosaries for everybody

There are Rosaries crafted at “Our Lady’s Workshop” in many places. They weekly make the rosaries that volunteer families in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish receive for praying for the community. The Vicar of the Pope ordered them eighteen rosaries and they

spent a whole night working until they finished the order, taking the energy from their prayers and their commitment. Members who volunteer their work in the Workshop see the ‘fruits of their work’ in the hands of many people and it is the best reward they can get. They also have received many testimonials of conversions from people who have received rosaries. The stories are endless, because it is like the Rosary chooses the bearer, not the other way around. There have been for example people who bought a piece because they found it pretty to later find out the medal in the rosary is of their favorite devotion; that fills them with pure joy. “Those are what I call ‘Godincidences’ not coincidences. I have learned not to question those events, but to rejoice on them happening” says Graciela with a smile. “Everyone who feels in their heart the calling for the commitment can participate in ‘Our Lady’s Workshop’. This is not a fashion or a hobby. The rosaries are not just jewelry to wear. They are the product of a mission to help others” concludes Carmen. Their greatest desire is to create in the near future

a second ‘Workshop’ in Doral, and continue founding Workshops in other cities and countries. The more urgent donation they require is to pay the air ticket to go to Bolivia to support a Workshop being formed there. They trust Our Lord will provide soon. In preparation for the month of May, they have crafted many choices in rosaries, which can be used as gifts for First Communions or Mother’s Day. “Taller de María”: una misión de Amor Por Maria Alejandra Pulgar

l paso de la intención a la acción no siempre es sencillo, sin embargo las mujeres comprometidas con el trabajo en el “Taller de María” en Doral, en menos de dos años, han hecho de la elaboración y distribución de Rosarios una actividad que les permite apoyar la propagación de la devoción a esa hermosa práctica Católica de oración y meditación y a la vez ayudar a los más necesitados. El “Taller de María” es una misión de Amor. Graciela Escalona, fundadora del Taller en Doral, explica que la iniciativa de estos grupos que trabajan elaborando rosarios en ambiente de oración surgió en Argentina, con el objetivo de propagar la devoción al Santo Rosario “La idea es que no haya un hogar que deje de rezar el rosario por falta de uno.” Graciela aprendió el proceso de elaboración de los rosarios a través de una de sus compañeras de oración en Key Biscayne y hace dos años propuso la actividad en una de las reuniones semanales de las mujeres que han realizado el Retiro de Emaús en la Parroquia Católica Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Doral. Como todo proceso de discernimiento, no le fue fácil superar su temor de hablar en público para invitar en esa asamblea a quienes quisieran participar de la elaboración de los rosarios. Siguió el impulso y dejó que las palabras surgieran. Ella misma se cuestionaba lo que estaba haciendo, porque no tenía material sino para elaborar 8 rosarios, pero se animó e invitó a todas las presentes para el día siguiente a su casa. “Por obra del Señor llegaron 8 mujeres y fue suficiente el material para que todas pudiéramos trabajar. Así comenzó el Taller de María en Doral. Todo guiado por el Señor.” El objetivo inicial de regalar rosarios a quienes los necesitaran se transformó en una obra social cuando deciden ‘adoptar’ un orfanato en Colombia y beneficiarlo con el dinero recaudado por las donaciones de quienes adquirían los rosarios. “Sentía en mi corazón que el Señor me decía: ‘Oración y Acción’ y yo no comprendía. Finalmente, en el Santísimo, donde se me aclaran todas mis dudas, entendí que tenemos que trabajar para los hermanos más necesitados” explica Graciela. “Este es un movimiento laico de mujeres comprometidas con la misión de ayudar a los hermanos. Cuando fui a Colombia vi la necesidad que hay en ancianatos y orfanatos. Las necesidades materiales son inmensas.” Allí decidió que el Taller de María de Doral adoptaría el Orfanato ‘Divina Infancia de Jesús, José y María’, ubicado en el Barrio Buenos Aires de la Ciudad de Medellín, Colombia. Graciela conoció la labor de la religiosa que humildemente administra ese orfanato, dando albergue y educación a 160 niños, en uno de sus viajes de misión con la organización

“Semillas del Alma”. De allí en adelante todos los otros Talleres de María que han sido fundados (Aventura, Brickell, Key Biscayne, Catedral de Miami, y algunos en Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina y Venezuela) comienzan por elegir la institución que van a adoptar. Carmen Olmos, participante y apoyo de Graciela en la operación del Taller de Doral explica que “Cuando se inicia un Taller, el taller ‘madre’ les proporciona el material para el arranque. Luego son autoabastecidos.” Con el producto de las ventas compran más material para trabajar y envían a la institución adoptada. “En América Latina hay mucha necesidad”, continúa Carmen. ”Aquí en EEUU es más fácil conseguir que las empresas grandes ayuden a los necesitados, mientras que en nuestros países hacen falta muchas cosas y lo que recaudamos les rinde mucho más. Ninguna de nosotras ganamos nada por esto. Amamos tanto lo que hacemos que ofrecemos nuestro trabajo para beneficiar a los demás.” Participar en el Taller no es una actividad social, es un trabajo real, donde las voluntarias que acuden semanalmente a elaborar los rosarios asumen el compromiso de participar activa y responsablemente, porque el Taller tiene a su vez la responsabilidad de proveer mensualmente para la institución adoptada. “Tiene que haber el compromiso real, la obligación autoimpuesta porque de lo que producimos en el taller comen niños o ancianos. Mente, corazón y acción.”

El proceso de construir un Rosario en el “Taller de María”

“Durante nuestro trabajo reina una gran paz, una gran armonía. Porque el Señor está ahí. En ello confiamos y al lado de Él está su Madre amada” comenta Graciela, pues para quienes asumen el compromiso de ayudar en el Taller el proceso ha sido de gran beneficio espiritual. “Cuando nos compran los rosarios están ayudando una buena obra, nada es para nuestro beneficio. Si lo compran porque les pareció lindo, pues Bendito Dios, porque al adquirirlo, así al menos ya lo tienes en tus manos.” Se pueden distinguir los Rosarios del Taller de María por dos características: tienen a nivel de la cruz tres cascabeles que representan a la Santísima Trinidad y en el centro tienen una medalla que puede ser de un santo o alguna advocación Mariana y que se elige haciendo una oración con la intención de que la imagen allí mostrada lleve un mensaje de paz, amor y consuelo a quien lo reciba. Todos los rosarios son distintos y se elaboran en ambiente de oración. En el Taller la jornada se inicia consagrando el trabajo con una oración de petición “por las necesidades de las personas que van a adquirir los rosarios que fabricaremos y nuestra promesa es que vamos a rezar de por vida por esas personas y sus familias, sean creyentes o no. En la vida diaria a veces se nos complica rezar todos los días el rosario, pero todos los días hay un grupo de Taller de María que está rezando por las necesidades de todos.”

Con humildad y paciencia las voluntarias van orando, enhebrando cuentas y haciendo nudos. “Armar un rosario es difícil hasta que uno se doblega. Nos trabaja la paciencia y la humildad. Es difícil llegar a la humildad para aceptar las críticas y corregir errores” describe Graciela, porque los controles de calidad del producto final son muy estrictos: “Nuestra pregunta de control de calidad es ‘¿le entregarías ese rosario a Jesús?’ Y más de una vez nos ha tocado desbaratarlos y volverlos a hacer hasta que queden perfectos, Porque en cada uno de nosotros está dentro el Señor y tenemos que verlo desde ese punto de vista. Es el Señor quien va a recibir los rosarios” “Sería estupendo si cada día todos pudieran elevar una oración diariamente al cielo por sus hermanos, que somos todos. Una oración breve ‘Señor ayúdanos, Señor protégenos, protege nuestro mundo, gracias por todo’. Así el mundo sería muy distinto. Dar las gracias por todo es muy importante”, dice Graciela. “Siempre damos las gracias por las cosas positivas, pero también debemos dar gracias cuando pedimos algo y no se nos concede porque eso quiere decir que el Señor nos está protegiendo, que si no es para mi bien no me lo va a conceder.” Al culminar el día, todos los rosarios elaborados son consagrados a la Virgen María, antes de ser em-

pacados para su distribución. Es una labor hermosa e intensa, minuciosa, pero gratificante y esto se evidencia en la alegría que manifiestan las participantes en la actividad.

Rosarios para todos

Los rosarios del Taller de María de Doral han llegado hasta la India. Son los rosarios que se entregan semanalmente a las familias voluntarias que oran por la comunidad en la Parroquia Guadalupe. También el Vicario del Papa les encargó 18 rosarios y estuvieron una noche entera haciéndolos, sacando la energía del compromiso y la oración. Para las participantes en el Taller la mejor gratificación ha sido ver los frutos de su labor en las ma-

nos de muchísima gente y recibir testimonios de conversiones gracias a haber recibido un rosario elaborado en el “Taller”. Las historias son infinitas, pues el Rosario elige al usuario, no al revés. En ocasiones las personas los adquieren porque les parecen bonitos y luego se dan cuenta que la medalla que tienen es de su devoción favorita y eso les da mucha emoción y alegría. “Son lo que yo llamo ‘Diosidencias’, no coincidencias. Ya lo aprendí” dice Graciela. “Todas las personas que en su corazón sientan el compromiso” pueden participar en los Talleres de María. “Esto no es una moda o un hobby, no son adornos que te estas colgando. Esto es una verdadera misión” concluye Car-

men. Su mayor deseo es en un futuro cercano fundar un segundo Taller en Doral, y seguir abriendo talleres en otros países. Para ello se requieren donaciones, la más perentoria es para costear el pasaje para ir a Bolivia a apoyar el Taller que se está formando en ese país. atalina Berenblum was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina sixteen years ago and has been living in Doral since the age of three. Her deep green eyes have the spark that identifies people who are really smart and witty. A few minutes into a conversation with her are enough to understand why she has been such a successful delegate in the seven Model UN Conferences she has attended representing her school, American Heritage High School, especially on the last one at University of Miami a few weeks ago where she earned the coveted ‘Best Delegate’ recognition. She is a teenager with extraordinary talents, which she has shown from an early age, when she used to describe her way of writing the letter ‘a’ as a ‘dancing letter’. Mature beyond her years, Catalina some moments sounds like a teenage ‘Mafalda’, the Argentinian cartoon of the little girl that worried about the future of the world. Caring and compassionate to the needs of others, Cata had at home the perfect breeding ground to explore her talents, expand her creativity and develop her interest for helping the world becoming a better place. “My parents inspire me” she says. Her mom is an art teacher and her dad is a controller at a non-profit organization. Catalina has learned from them how to express her creativity through different outlets and how to keep the good humor and focus on finding solutions when facing adversity. Catalina was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 10 years old. After long months of research on her mom’s part they were able to find an adequate diet and treatments for her. Cata’s strength through her treatment and her determination to overcome her ailment were fundamental for gaining control of her health issues to enjoy a normal teenage life: school, homework, friends and hobbies. Being an avid reader with a curious nature, her favorite subjects at school are English and Chemistry. She likes listening to jazz and also enjoys exploring her creativity using different materials, especially with crafts like jewelry making and origami: “I find it very relaxing and like the way you can turn a plain piece of paper into a beautiful sculpture.” Upon finishing her 5th grade at John I. Smith Elementary, Catalina attended a Magnet Middle School with concentration on theater. That

experience allowed her “to go escape into another world and create a new person. Looking back on it I feel like I really liked to try to think how I would step into someone else’s shoes and how I would see things from their perspective. It really helped me understand other people.” That empathy and understanding, her interest for knowing about other cultures and countries, along with her proficiency both in English and Spanish and her experience on public speaking through her theater training, have played a huge part on her success as Model UN Delegate.

Becoming a MODEL UN Delegate

Catalina got involved into Model UN through a club in her school. She joined in sophomore year because of her strong interest in political science and economics, which she dreams to pursue as majors in college. “I also want to study Chinese and Russian because I believe they are important languages to learn in terms of how our global community is changing. Russians are a strong force, we need to be able to talk to them; and the Chinese are great for trading purposes and consumerism.” Since starting her participation on the Model UN club, Catalina has attended 7 conferences. Every school is assigned to represent a country and the conferences are simulations of discussions on

global issues, where students have to attend very well prepared in order for their school team to be recognized. That preparation contemplates reading newspapers; researching UN documents and studying the politics and positions of the country they are representing on the issues that are going to be discussed in the conference. Also delegates have to be proficient on negotiation skills, public speaking, writing essays, analyzing complex situations and also using their intuition to be able to successfully represent the assigned country. As a beginner delegate, last year Catalina was assigned to attend a large conference, where discussions are general, to gain confidence and knowledge of the process.” In model UN, people don’t know you by your actual name; they know you by your country. We have to make sure we’re following our country’s policy.” Her participation in these conferences sparked in Catalina the curiosity for international politics and she now actively follows the news. She considers that one of the benefits of being part of these committees, where delegates only have 30 second speeches is an improvement of her communication skills. She considers also that her experience in Model UN has been for her and her teammates an eye opener to many of the complicated issues that people around the world are facing nowadays like poverty, corruption and terrorism. On her most recent conference, where she obtained the Best Delegate distinction, the topic was political corruption and electoral fraud in Latin America. “I knew a lot of events in Latin American past have a history of corruption but I didn’t know the level! “ Her recent Best Delegate distinction has been the product of thorough preparation and her experience in previous conferences since last year. “The ranking is Verbal Recognition, Honorable Mention and then Best Delegate” explains Catalina, adding that the criteria for awarding those categories are based on participation, sticking to country policy, contribution to the resolution, leadership, teamwork, knowledge of the issue and the most important part :“being diplomatic; we are the United Nations. It’s important to embrace the spirit of the organization you’re representing.” One of the most memorable experiences

Catalina has had on Model UN is being able to speak on the actual UN in New York early this year. “The conference we were in at the time was a national conference, they don’t give individual awards but the honor of speaking is considered the award for the committee. I am often one of the only Hispanic people in my committee.” On her experience, Catalina has found out that the main qualities a good UN delegate has to cultivate are curiosity, passion for information, interest for public speaking and good social and writing skills. Working on enhancing those attributes has helped her be more aware of the important issues that are happening in the world and also perform at a top level while representing her school on the Model UN committees.

“We can learn from everyone”

“I think us as a generation, in order to be able to understand all the people and cultures we’ll eventually get to come into contact with, we really have to understand what’s going on. Teenagers especially, need to understand that not everything’s perfect, not everything is rosy. And I think that we have to value a lot more what we have” explains Catalina. “Each person has their own different

experiences and each person has their own different history with what they’ve done and what they’re interested in and from every person we learn, we steal a piece of what they teach us, a little piece of experiences because each person reacts differently to different experiences based on what they’ve had in the past. I think we can learn from everyone.” Having role models like Sheryl Sandberg and Hillary Clinton, Catalina’s hopes and dreams for the future are great and of world positive impact: “I want to be happy. I want to make a difference, but I hope to be able to be constantly learning

all the time and I want to be more analytical in terms of foreign relations and be able to take the policies of different countries in a psychological and sociological perspective. And be able to hopefully move towards a more democratic, just society.” “For my family I want to be able to be an active participant and be able to always communicate with my parents and be able to understand them more. And for Doral, I want to put our face on the map; we are a very dominant Hispanic community and we can get the voice of the Hispanics out there, especially in the political sense, to make more of a change in how we’re represented in the national government.” “In our community, teenagers need to become aware, because there are a lot of things happening in the world that are going to affect them in the future. We are a generation who sees the problems overseas but live in the US where we can have a voice. I think we can propel change if we are aware and remain vigilant, understand and are sympathetic. Participate, get involved, and sign petitions, do community service. It is not only important to helping other people, but to understanding others, which is very important in order to make change” concluded Catalina.

atalina Berenblum nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina hace dieciséis años y ha vivido en Doral desde que tenía tres. Sus profundos ojos verdes tienen la chispa que identifica a las personas profundamente inteligentes e ingeniosas. Unos pocos minutos de conversación bastan para comprender por qué ha sido una delegada tan exitosa en todas las Conferencias de Modelo de Naciones Unidas (Modelo ONU), a las cuales ha asistido representando a su escuela, American Heritage School. Hace pocas semanas atrás, en la Conferencia Modelo ONU en la Universidad de Miami Catalina Berenblum recibió la máxima calificación y reconocimiento como Mejor Delegado. Es una adolescente con talentos extraordinarios, que se han mostrado desde muy temprana edad. Muy madura para sus años, por momentos Catalina parece una ‘Mafalda’ adolescente, preocupada por el futuro del mundo. Cariñosa y compasiva por las necesidades de los demás, Catalina tuvo en su hogar el mejor lugar para desarrollar y explorar sus talentos, expandir su creatividad y desarrollar su interés por ayudar al mundo a ser cada vez mejor. “Mis padres son mi modelo y mi inspiración” dice Cata. Su madre es profesora de Arte y su padre es contralor en una organización sin fines de lucro. Desde muy temprana edad Cata aprendió con ellos como expresar la creatividad de muchas formas y como mantener el buen humor para enfocarse, encontrar soluciones y superar tropiezos. A los diez años Catalina fue diagnosticada con la Enfermedad de Crohn. Después de muchos meses de investigación, sus padres y su médico encontraron la dieta y tratamientos adecuados para su recuperación. La fortaleza de Cata durante el tratamiento, su disciplina y su determinación para lograr controlar sus síntomas han sido fundamentales para recuperarse y lograr disfrutar plenamente de su vida de adolescente: escuela, tareas, amigos y diversiones. Es una lectora voraz y de naturaleza curiosa. Sus materias favoritas son Inglés y Química. Le gusta escuchar jazz y explorar su creatividad haciendo manualidades, especialmente joyería y origami: “Me relaja mucho ver cómo puedo transformar una simple hoja de papel en una hermosa escultura.”

Al culminar la primaria en John I. Smith Elementary, Catalina asistió a South Miami Middle School en el programa de teatro. La experiencia le permitió “aprender cómo ponerme en los zapatos de los demás y ver el mundo desde otra perspectiva. Eso me ha ayudado mucho a entender a las personas.” La empatía y comprensión, su interés por conocer otras culturas y países, aunados a su destreza bilingüe en Inglés y Español y su experiencia en oratoria han sido parte importante para lograr su éxito como Delegada del Modelo ONU.

¿Qué hace un Delegado del Modelo ONU?

En su segundo año de secundaria Catalina entró al Club de Modelo ONU de su escuela, pues siempre le han interesado las Ciencias Políticas y la Economía, al punto que desea seguir esas carreras cuando vaya a la Universidad. “Quiero también aprender a hablar Chino y Ruso, pues creo que son idiomas importantes visualizando

los cambios de la comunidad global. Los rusos son una fuerza importante, tenemos que saber comunicarnos con ellos. Y los Chinos tienen gran importancia para los negocios futuros.” Desde que entró al Club de Modelo ONU, Catalina ha participado en 7 conferencias. A cada escuela se le asigna un país y las conferencias son simulaciones de discusiones sobre asuntos globales, donde los estudiantes deben llegar muy bien preparados para ser participantes efectivos en el equipo de su escuela y lograr los reconocimientos esperados. La preparación para la conferencia incluye leer la prensa, investigar documentos de la ONU y estudiar políticas y posiciones del país a representar sobre el tema a discutir. También los delegados deben desarrollar sus habilidades de negociación, oratoria, escritura, análisis de situaciones complejas y desarrollar su intuición para tener una representación exitosa en la discusión. El año pasado, como principiante, Catalina estuvo asignada a participar en una conferencia con muchos asistentes, donde las discusiones son generales, para tomar la experiencia, confianza y conocimiento en el proceso. “Es muy importante que los delegados sean estrictos en seguir las políticas del país que representan.” Poco a poco fue desarrollando su curiosidad por la política internacional y ahora sigue activamente las noticias. Catalina considera que uno de los beneficios de formar parte de estos comités, donde los delegados solamente tienen 30 segundos para expresarse, es que han mejorado sus habilidades de comunicación. También piensa que esta experiencia le ha servido a ella y sus compañeros para abrirles los ojos a las necesidades y problemas mundiales como la pobreza, corrupción y terrorismo. En la reciente conferencia, hace pocas semanas atrás, cuando obtuvo la Distinción de Mejor Delegada, Catalina tuvo que documentarse sobre la corrupción política y electoral en América Latina y comenta “yo sabía que había historia de corrupción en Latinoamérica, ¡pero nunca me imaginé los niveles reales que existen!” “Los rangos de calificación de un delegado son: Reconocimiento Verbal, Mención Honorifica y Mejor Delegado” explica Catalina, añadiendo que los criterios para la premiación consideran participación, respeto a las políticas del país represen-

tado, contribución a la resolución final, liderazgo, trabajo en equipo, conocimiento del problema y lo más importante : “Ser diplomático; después de todo estamos representando a las Naciones Unidas, tenemos que asumir el espíritu de la organización que representamos.” Una de las experiencias más memorables para Catalina de las conferencias en las que ha participado, fue poder hablar en una sala de discusiones de la ONU en Nueva York este año. “Era una conferencia nacional y en ellas no otorgan premios individuales. El derecho de palabra es considerado el premio para el comité. Fue muy significativo, con frecuencia soy la única hispana en mi equipo de trabajo.” Para Catalina, las principales cualidades para ser un buen Delegado del Modelo ONU son: cultivar la curiosidad; pasión por la información; interés por la oratoria; escribir bien y tener habilidades sociales. Al trabajar en cultivar esas cualidades le ha permitido a ella aprender sobre muchos de los asuntos actuales del mundo, además de representar exitosamente a su escuela en los comités

“Para que nuestra generación pueda compren-

der a la gente y diferentes culturas, es importante que los adolescentes despierten y se den cuenta que no todo en el mundo es perfecto. Así podremos valorar mucho más lo que tenemos” explica Catalina. “Cada persona tiene sus propias historias y experiencias. De todos podemos aprender, de todos tomamos un pedazo de sus experiencias, sus reacciones y sus vivencias.” Además de a sus padres, Catalina admira a Sheryl Sandberg y Hillary Clinton y en ellos se inspira. Su mayor deseo es impactar al mundo de manera positiva: “Quiero ser feliz y hacer una diferencia, pero también espero aprender constantemente y comprender y analizar las relaciones entre los países desde una perspectiva psicológica y sociológica. Quiero ayudar a construir una sociedad más justa y democrática.” “Quiero poder siempre tener buena comunicación con mis padres, comprenderlos siempre, participar activamente en mi familia y en mi comunidad. Quiero que Doral sea una ciudad relevante, ponerla en el mapa. Somos una comunidad mayoritariamente Hispana y podemos ser la voz de los Hispanos, principalmente para cambiar nuestra representación en el gobierno nacional.”

“Los adolescentes de nuestra comunidad tenemos que ser más conscientes de todo lo que pasa en el mundo, lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor que nos afectará en el futuro. Somos una generación que ve los problemas fuera de los EEUU pero que tiene la posibilidad de ser la voz de quienes no la tienen. Podemos impulsar cambios si nos lo proponemos, nos informamos y nos interesamos. Participar, involucrarse, firmar peticiones, hacer trabajo comunitario. Todo eso no es solamente para ayudar a otros sino para comprenderlos y eso es lo más importante cuando queremos lograr cambios en el mundo” concluyó Catalina.

ejorar el inglés, perfeccionar las habilidades con la computadora y especializarse profesionalmente, son sólo algunas de las ideas que pasan por nuestra cabeza cada vez que intentamos buscar trabajo, abrir nuestra propia empresa o hasta ganar un dinerito extra desde la casa. Y es que, en el competitivo mundo laboral de hoy, es cada vez más indispensable perfilar nuestras habilidades y talentos, perfeccionar el manejo del inglés y manejar adecuadamente las herramientas tecnológicas e informáticas actuales, por lo que es normal que estemos en una búsqueda constante de superación personal. El Programa de Educación Continua y Desarrollo Profesional del Miami Dade College (MDC) ofrece conocimientos especializados para adultos que necesitan continuar su educación en el nivel post-secundario, obtener un empleo, desempeñar un papel positivo en la educación de sus hijos e involucrarse en su comunidad. Yvette Crichlow, coordinadora del Programa de Educación Continua y Desarrollo Profesional del Miami Dade College West Campus, explica que este tipo de orientación permite atender las necesidades de la población no servida por los programas tradicionales de la universidad. Lo más importante de estos cursos es que están disponibles para toda la comunidad, pues el único requisito necesario para inscribirse es una identificación con foto que puede ser el pasaporte o la licencia de conducir. No se solicitan pruebas de residencia, estatus migratorios o educación previa y muchos de los cursos se dan en español o a través de internet. “Ofrecemos cursos sin crédito para las personas que quieren enriquecer sus experiencias culturales o mejorar sus competencias profesionales o laborales”, manifestó Crichlow, quien señaló como ejemplos de los programas ofrecidos el inglés como segunda lengua que permite aprender o perfeccionar el idioma y aplicaciones informáticas como Microsoft Office, QuickBook y AutoCad. Irama González, coordinadora del Programa de Tecnología y Recreación y Entretenimiento, señala que hay cursos de tan sólo ocho horas que permiten a los estudiantes conocer las herramientas necesarias para iniciar su negocio on-line a través de Amazon o eBay, “es una forma rápida y eficiente de ofrecerles a las per-

sonas una guía práctica que les permita trabajar desde su casa”, acotó. Otros cursos disponibles dentro de este programa son el de cuidado infantil, idiomas (español, portugués, italiano y francés), teneduría de libros, contabilidad, agente de aduanas, real estate, planificación de eventos, recursos humanos, notario público, importación/exportación, artes y oficios, música, teatro, danza, salud y bienestar, artes culinarias y finanzas. En los casos de notaría pública y real estate, el MDC ofrece preparación para los exámenes del estado de la Florida. Informa Crichlow, que el programa de inglés que es, lógicamente, uno de los más solicitados, se compone de una variedad de cursos diseñados para aprender o perfeccionar el idioma en el menor tiempo posible y que incluye niveles básicos e intensivos, habilidades comunicaciones, lectura y escritura y su costo oscila entre los 150 y 245 dólares. El programa de español también ha sido muy importante, pues vivimos en una ciudad bilingüe, donde se ha vuelto casi indispensable tener un amplio conocimiento del inglés y del español para interactuar con la comunidad y ofrecer nuestros servicios profesionales. El entrenamiento en cuidado infantil, que puede ser tomado en inglés o en español, proporciona, igualmente, un aprendizaje rápido y efectivo en áreas como prácticas pre-escolares, alfabetización temprana, desarrollo del lenguaje y la enseñanza de la lecto-escritura que permite contar con las herramientas necesarias para ingresar al mercado laboral en esta especialización. La educación continua genera beneficios personales como mejorar sus habilidades profesionales y su

o think about the possibility that your child could study all high school courses without having to go to school, controlling his or her own class schedule, having all assessments done from home and still being able to graduate successfully was a unimaginable option, but it is now possible thanks to the Virtual Education Program implemented by the Florida Department of Education. This program, based on instruction through the use of Internet, was approved two years ago by education officers in Tallahassee and allows Charter schools to offer a virtual education system for all full-time students in grades K-12 who aspire to graduate from high school. Virtual education is somewhat already used, because all regular high school students are obligated to enroll in at least one on-line subject in order to graduate, with the objective to prepare students for university where many courses are taught on the Internet.

The first Charter institution in Doral to offer this virtual educational program is Doral Academy,

where students interested in this system can register now to begin this coming August, on the same date when the next school year begins. Douglas Rodriguez, director of Doral Academy, explained that this virtual high school is primarily intended for those students who have extracurricular activities, like those who practice sports and have little time to comply with the assistance to the classrooms. “This does not mean,” explains Rodriguez, “that the rest of the students are excluded because it is a program completely open to all those students who prefer studying from home, or that might have a health problem that impedes them from physically attending school”. Those responsible for implementing and monitoring this program in Doral Academy are Jorge Nunez, who is in charge of it, and Connie Bermudez Jimenez, who will be the counselor to these students. Both agree that the students enrolled in this virtual education will receive the same counseling and support from the school that is offered to those who come to the class. Even though these students will complete these courses by Internet, for Douglas Rodriguez it is important that they do not lose contact with the school as an institution. “I think that it is not healthy for students to stay at home all the time away from their social circle, for what we offer to them is the opportunity to integrate all their extra curricular activities and continue to feel part of our school community.” Rodriguez insisted on pointing out that the students will receive the same education as if they were attending the Charter school, not only because they will be able to participate in discussion sessions with live teachers through a web cam, but they will also have two days a week in which they can go to Doral Academy to clarify any issues that come up during the on-line sessions. “The idea of this program is not for students to lose their consistency and academic responsibility. For the educators the system provides tools to control the hours in which the students are connected to monitor the daily time they dedicate to their classes and it will have methods of evaluation

to measure their progress,” said Rodríguez. Additionally, the students who opt for the virtual education will be provided all the necessary preparation to take the assessments required by the state and may advance further by taking college courses. “The quality of education will always be the same as that one offered in our school,” emphasized the Doral Academy director. Another point highlighted by Rodriguez, as well as by Nuñez and Bermúdez, is that the students who have financial difficulties will also be able to access the virtual education because, after an evaluation of the family’s economic income they might be offered a free computer and assigned an Internet connection. “The period of adaptation and initial startup is always a bit complex, but we were able to involve our students in this project, and this year we are graduating three students with very good qualifications who chose online education, and for this next school year we have already received many requests,” said Jiménez. ensar en la posibilidad de que su hijo pueda cursar todas las materias de high school sin ir a la escuela, controlar su propio horario de clases, ser evaluado desde la casa y aun así graduarse con éxito es una opción difícil de imaginar, pero posible de desarrollar gracias al Programa de Educación Virtual implementado por el Departamento de Educación del Estado de la Florida. Este programa, basado en la instrucción mediante el uso de internet, fue aprobado hace dos años por los oficiales de educación en Tallahassee y permite a las escuelas Charter ofrecer un sistema de educación virtual a tiempo completo para todos los estudiantes de los grados K-12 que aspiran a graduarse de high school. La educación virtual ya es utilizada parcialmente, pues todos los alumnos regulares de high school están obligados a cursar, por lo menos, una materia on-line para poder graduarse, lo cual tiene como objetivo preparar a los estudiantes para las universidades, donde son varias la asignaturas que se ven por internet.

La primera institución Charter de la ciudad de Doral en ofrecer este programa educativo virtual es Doral Academy, donde los alumnos interesados en este sistema pueden inscribirse desde ya para empezar en agosto el nuevo año escolar en la misma fecha que se iniciará la educación regular. Douglas Rodríguez, director de Doral Academy explicó que el high school virtual está primordialmente destinado a los alumnos que tienen actividades extra como, por ejemplo, los deportistas, quienes tiempo muy poco tiempo para cumplir con la asistencia a las aulas de clases. “Esto no significa”, señaló Rodríguez, “que el resto de los estudiantes estén excluidos, pues se trata de un programa completamente abierto para todos aquellos alumnos que prefieran estudiar desde la casa o incluso, tengan algún problema de salud que les dificulte el traslado hasta la escuela”. Los encargados de ejecutar y supervisar este programa en la Doral Academy son Jorge Nuñez, como director del mismo y Connie Bermúdez Jimé-

nez, quien será la consejera y orientadora de los estudiantes. Ambos coinciden en señalar que los alumnos inscritos en la educación virtual recibirán la misma asesoría y apoyo de la escuela que es ofrecido a quienes acuden a los salones de clase. A pesar de que los estudiantes verán sus materias por internet, para Douglas Rodríguez es importante que los alumnos no pierdan el contacto con la escuela como institución, “creo que no es saludable que los muchachos estén todo el tiempo en la casa y se alejen de su círculo social, por lo que les ofrecemos la oportunidad de integrase a todas las actividades extra-académicas para que sigan sintiéndose parte de la comunidad escolar”. Rodríguez insistió en señalar que los alumnos recibirán la misma educación que si estuviesen asistiendo a una escuela Charter, pues no sólo podrán participar en sesiones de consulta en vivo con los maestros a través de una web cam, sino que también tendrán dos días a la semana en los que pueden acudir a Doral Academy para aclarar cualquier duda que les haya surgido durante las clases on-line. “La idea de este programa tampoco es que los alumnos pierdan la rigurosidad y la responsabilidad académica, por lo que, como educadores, el sistema nos provee herramientas de control de las horas en que los alumnos están conectados, el tiempo diario que le dedican a las clases y métodos de evaluación para poder medir su progreso”, manifiesta Rodríguez. Igualmente, los estudiantes que opten por la

educación virtual, contarán con toda la preparación necesaria para presentar los exámenes exigidos por el estado y pueden adelantar las materias de la universidad, “la calidad de la educación siempre será la misma que la ofrecida en nuestra escuela”, enfatizó el director de Doral Academy. Otro punto resaltado por Rodríguez, así como por Nuñez y Bermúdez, es que los alumnos que tengan dificultades económicas, también podrán acceder a la educación virtual, pues tras una prueba de ingresos económicos familiares, pueden optar a que les sea asignada una computadora y servicio de internet de forma gratuita. Esta experiencia educativa ya fue probada en el condado de Miami-Dade, en la institución Mater Academy Charter de Hialeah Gardens, donde el vice-principal, Francisco Jiménez, fue el encargado de poner el proyecto en ejecución durante el año escolar que está próximo a terminar, teniendo, a su juicio, resultados, altamente favorables.

“Siempre el periodo de adaptación y puesta en funcionamiento inicial es un poco complejo, pero logramos involucrar a nuestros estudiantes en este proyecto y ya este año se nos gradúan tres alumnos, con muy buenas calificaciones, que optaron por la educación por internet y para este próximo año escolar ya son muchas las solicitudes que hemos recibido”, comentó Jiménez. In a short time countless events or micro-events occur one after another… it is not much different with a word, thrown by chance into the mind, producing waves on the surface and in the depths. It provokes an infinite series of chain reactions …”

odari’s metaphor suggests that the concept of a word dropped into the mind is much like a stone dropped into a pond. “EMPATHY”: a word that potentially predicates change, a word that has produced an incredible effect on our school learning community. Once again, The Pre K teachers from The Joy of Learning along with Daniela Foerch, Ph.D., Instructor of Early Childhood Education from Florida International University, became ambassadors for children as they participated in the Global Summit on Childhood 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada April 10-13th. A summit which beckoned: “To support every child and its family to fulfill her / his full potential and for them to become creative, confident, competent adults with the skill, resilience and emotional capacity to cope with life’s opportunities and vicissitudes”; “ To Listen to the voices of children…to see the vision of those who work towards a sustainable future… and to elevate the visibility of childhood by exploring collaborative efforts…” What does childhood look like around the world? What practices and policies can we implement that will protect our children and help them develop to their full potential? For four days we listened and met people from all over the world. An unforgettable experience wherein we dialogued with passionate educators and researchers committed to making a difference in the educational system, each in their perspective countries eager to learn from each other. The proposal for our presentation was “Using Visible Thinking and Global Thinking Routines to Nurture Empathy in Young Children”. Global habits of mind can help preschoolers listen with empathy and think flexibly as they attempt to see the world through the perspectives of others. Special emphasis was given to how preschoolers become aware of their own emotion and the emotions of

others and learn how to manage them. We inspired and became inspired. The reaction of our participants was quite motivating. There seemed to be a unanimous sense of encouragement and validation in the work shared. Empathy can be nourished in our young children as demonstrated by Michelle Estarellas Rio, Helen Guiulfo and the Pre K – 4’s, with the 3 Y’s thinking routine. Paula Luzzi Panno and Andrea Muñoz presented their Pre K -3’s documentation on their on going project entitled MUSIC CONNECTS ME WITH MY FEELINGS AND MY BODY. Both classrooms highlighted stimulating indications on the ability that children have to step inside another’s feelings and capable of identifying not only happy, good, angry, sad, but also, joy, excitement, frustration, anxious, silly, nervous, and more. We left with a feeling of empowerment to continue our commitment to nourish empathy within our young community as we affirm responsibility for our children, childhood and their future as global citizens. It is our goal to set in motion those

It was created by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in 1921. Participation on the society is by invitation only. After a thorough analysis of the application by a committee of teachers and school officials, members are admitted and have to commit to follow the rules of the chapter. When all requirements have been fulfilled, members are inducted in the Society during a special ceremony and are issued a certificate, numbered pin, national membership card and for Seniors a stole they will proudly wear at their Graduation. National Student Leadership week is celebrated during the month of April, and is the time of the year when NHS induction ceremonies t a k e place at schools around the country, where over a million students participate in the society. Being inducted is a privilege and a prize for students who have worked hard for years on strengthening the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character and service that are core values for members. The motto of NHS is “noblesse oblige”, meaning that actions of an individual should always conform to his values and the reputation he has earned. NHS members are encouraged to live up to that motto and to act accordingly in all their activities inside and outside the school. All High Schools in Doral have established a chapter of NHS and all public middle schools in the area have a chapter for National Junior Honor Society, to foster in students the qualities that would make them good candidates for NHS once they reach sophomore year in High School. The NHS sponsor at Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School chapter is Ms. Elsa Almaguer, who through this year guided members to participate in different activities such as visiting nursing homes, tutoring disadvantaged students, preparing honor roll ceremonies and serving as role models to inspire and encourage excellence throughout the school. The RRDSH-NHS induction ceremony took place on April 9th, where 80 juniors and Seniors who have completed the requirements of the Chapter received in the presence of their proud parents and school officials the symbols that identify them as members of the most selective and prestigious club of the school.

rangeTheory Fitness, a new gym that recently opened in the City of Doral, implements a unique concept. A custom group training, which includes intervals vascular and strength exercises. OrangeTheory Fitness launched its concept in 2010 and has grown to more than 195 franchises in the United States, Canada and England. The workout monitored through the heart rate monitor is designed to maintain the body in a zone in which stimulates the training and increases energy. Guided by highly qualified coaches, participants use different equipment, including the treadmill; rowing machines, suspension training and weights, and they can burn an average of 900 calories per session.

“And there is variety, each time they come to do an exercise it will be a different one. Usually when you go to traditional gyms, you enter and you don’t know where to start. Here, you’ll have a personal trainer who will be guiding you through the exercises, if you’re doing it well if you’re doing it wrong. And you also have the technology. When the class ends, you will receive an e-mail that will show you a graph about how the heartbeat behaved while doing the exercises and the calories burned. So from the very first day until after a year and you will be able to see the progress and how your body has improved. Not only you’ll look better but you’re going to be healthier from the inside out. And that’s the big difference you’ll see here,” said Alex R. Garcia, one of the owners of the franchise at Doral to Doral Family Journal. According to a survey of the Top Fitness Trends of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), HIT, High Interval Training is first on the list of 20 trends in workouts for the year 2014. “We have 5 coaches. All trainers are highly qualified. They have up to 10 years of doing different Group Training, Circle Training. Classes are for not more than 24 people and the class is divided, half of the class does strength and half of the class does cardio,” added Sara E. Castillo, also owner of the new franchise recently opened in Doral. The gym, equipped with lockers, showers and top

of the line equipment, offers classes from Monday to Sunday from 5:30 am to 9:00 pm. Subscriptions are month to month. Sessions take one hour with 15 minutes between classes. When asked their owners if anyone can come and train without participating in the classes, Alex and Sara explained to DFJ that “They are sessions, it’s not like the traditional gym where you can go and do you work out alone. That’s the big difference.” “The sessions are for everyone. For example, at the walker we have 3 levels: walking trotting and running. And then, we have people that will be using weights, but some people will use 8-pound dumbbells while there are people who will be working out with 25 pounds. The coach will give you alternatives. The body receives the same work out. That is the reason why it is a more personalized training,” explained Sara.

On this app you can see your profile, choose your classes, view class schedules, the coach who is in charge of the class that day and you can book your classes. “If you’ve tried other gyms, here is guaranteed that you will get results. The physiological theory behind the success of this new trend is called EPOC “Excess Post - Exercise Oxygen Consumption”. Through the heart monitor, and during the hour - long session, you will do interval exercises of 12-24 minutes to keep your training to 84 % of the capacity of the heart.” The program is represented by five colors:

The gray level is the level at which you start walking, the light blue level is when you start to warm up, green and orange level is when your heart is working out to its full capacity. So what the coach does is to keep everyone between the green and the orange for no more than 35 minutes. Allí se puede ver el perfil de cada uno, elegir sus clases, ver los horarios de las clases, el entrenador que esta dando las clases ese día y también reservar su clase. “A pesar de haber intentado otros gimnasios, aquí tienen garantizado que va a recibir resultados. Y también tenemos una combinación que nunca se

había hecho que es la tecnología, con el monitor del corazón, la aplicación en el teléfono y no se puede discutir con los resultados,” agregó Alex. La teoría fisiológica detrás del éxito de esta nueva tendencia se denomina EPOC (por sus siglas en inglés: “Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption”). A través del monitor del corazón, y durante la hora que dura la sesión, se realizan ejercicios de intervalos de 12-24 minutos que mantienen el entrenamiento al 84% de la capacidad del corazón. “El programa se encuentra representadas por cinco colores: que son el gris, el celeste, el verde, el naranja, y el rojo. El nivel gris es el nivel en el cual se empieza caminando, el nivel celeste es cuando ya empieza a calentar, el nivel verde y anaranjado es cuando estas al máximo de tu corazón. Entonces lo que trata el entrenador es mantener a todos entre el verde y el anaranjado por no mas de 35 minutos. Y al hacer eso, uno sigue quemando calorías hasta 36 horas después de haber terminado la clase,” dijo Sara. El resultado final es el “efecto Orange”: más energía, un cuerpo tonificado y la quema de entre 200 y 400 calorías extra por más de 36 hs., después de haber realizado la sesión de entrenamiento. a piel es un órgano que posee una elasticidad increíble… Pero con el pasar de los años va perdiendo la elasticidad debido a la perdida de colágeno en el organismo, al igual que si una persona logra adelgazar de forma importante, muy rápidamente, su piel de igual manera pierde parte de su elasticidad.

Al aumentar de peso se estira la piel, y al perder rápidamente peso se encoge, este fenómeno hace aún mas notorio a simple vista la flacidez de la piel así como la aparición de estrías, particularmente en el abdomen, los muslos y la parte superior de los brazos, donde tiende a acumularse la mayor cantidad de peso. Además de la pérdida de peso, la edad, la mala nutrición, una hidratación deficiente, la exposición excesiva al sol, y el tabaco, también son otros factores que afectan tu piel.

Afortunadamente, hay varias opciones que pueden ayudarte a reafirmar la piel después de adelgazar, incluyendo la práctica de una rutina de ejercicios, una alimentación saludable y en casos muy avanzados, una cirugía plástica. Por su parte, la Celulitis, aunque no es algo exclusivo de las mujeres, son a estas a quienes afecta mas, todas quieren tener un cuerpo de playa, libre de celulitis, bien tonificado y de aspecto sano. Una vez que aparece, es muy difícil eliminarla pero si se puede mejorar notablemente.

Existen varios factores que predisponen a la celulitis: Hormonales, Congénitos, Psicológicos, Alimenticios y estilo de vida. Nunca elimines totalmente los carbohidratos. Enfócate en perder de medio a un kilo por semana. -Toma mucha agua, es fundamental para mantener la elasticidad de la piel y botar las toxinas. Debes tomar unos 2 litros de agua diarios. - Ejercicio físico moderado: Puedes caminar y realizar ejercicios cardiovasculares para mejorar la circulación y generar perdida de grasa corporal. Existen ejercicios específicos muy buenos para combatir la flacidez y celulitis, como los son los Lunges y trabajos con pesas para tonificar. Existen tratamientos corporales que pueden ayudarte a mejorar considerablemente, pero ten en cuenta que si no cambias tu estilo de vida, nada tendrá la efectividad deseada. -Puedes complementar tu dieta con suplementos que te ayuden a estimular la producción de Colágeno natural en tu organismo. Como he dicho anteriormente, las proteinas son muy necesarias (más bien esenciales) para que nuestro organismo cumpla sus funciones vitales y podamos mantenernos fuertes y saludables; pero al parecer han surgido nuevas dietas lo cual abusa de su ingesta. Como todo en exceso hace daño esto va también para la proteína en el organismo... Ya que dietas prolongadas con alto contenido de proteína puede ser efectos contraproducentes en nuestra salud. La proteína es crucial para nuestro organismo, ya que esta es esencial para la construcción de estructuras de nuestro cuerpo, entre ellas: la masa muscular. Las proteínas también nos ayudan a perder peso por el impacto que tienen en nuestro metabolismo y sus característica (como el saciar tu apetito por largas horas, y efecto térmico) es por eso que muchos cometen la evocación de basar sus dietas en solo este micronutrientes, olvidándose de la importancia de carbohidratos y las grasas saludables. Es necesario que haya un ingesta correcta de proteínas, dependiendo el peso del individuo, la actividad física y sus metas especificas. Como lo dije antes, el comer proteínas puede saciar tu apetito de manera drástica lo cual ayudar a las personas con ansiedad y bajar de peso y seguir una dieta mas disciplina. Al tener ese efecto saciante, la persona puede desenfocarse un poco de la preocupación de su dieta y enfocarse en sus otras labores ya que su cuerpo controlara con mayor eficacia la ansiedad por dulces o carbohidratos lo cual genera un autodominio de sí mismo y como resultado una dieta con mayor éxito.

Como ya saben, ningún extremo es esta vida es bueno. Entonces comer proteínas si es bueno es necesario, pero que tanta podemos comer para cumplir nuestros requisitos nutricionales sin abusar de nuestro organismo? La cantidad cambia de acuerdo al individuo si es mujer u hombre, peso, altura, actividad física, etc. Si “X” persona no tiene una actividad física muy acelerada lo normal es que tenga un rango de: 0.8, 1, 1.2 a 1.8 gramos de proteína por kilo. Si la persona quiere crear masa muscular o bajar de peso estos pueden subir a 2 a 2.5 gramos por día. Estos números, cambian no son precisos (no son personalizados) y no lo pueden tomas como un guía exacta, pero si les puede dar una idea de lo que necesitan. Ahora, digamos que estas comiendo una dieta alta en proteína, se sientes bien y logran tonificar y lucen súper bien por fuera, pero por dentro después de un tiempo prolongado de esta dieta “HiperPoretica,” puede que no todo sea color de rosas. Este ritmo de alimentación, puede llevarte a riesgos de salud que quizá no se pasaron por tu mente jamás. Cuando hay un exceso de proteínas en el organismo, el no tiene la opción de almacenarlas como ocurre con la grasa. No queda otra que eliminar el exceso de proteínas por otro lado, el cual causa una alteración metabólica. Esto desequilibra tu pH (“El balance de acido alcalino en el organismo), sobrecargando órganos vitales para contrarrestar esa bajada de pH ya que el cuerpo también lucha por un balance interno. Este exceso de proteína va acidificando el medio afectando a funciones neuronales, cardiovasculares y respiratorias. Esto hace que el organismo reaccione a la toxicidad de purinas; sobrecargando el “hígado y el riñón.” Esto

ocasiona el volumen de orina para poder eliminar el exceso de urea y amoniaco debido a la alta ingesta de proteínas (lo cual causa una deshidratación: perdida de potasio, sodio y electrolitos, logrando un desequilibrio en tu pH) no solo eso, también cauda una descalcificación ósea y el cual te vuelve propenso a fracturas. Pero esto va más profundo. También puede llegar a causar alteraciones hormonales debido la acidosis del medio, aparte de un molesto olor a amoniaco que desprende la orina, el sudor o el aliento. Hay otro gran problema que puede ocurrir relacionada con las purinas (debido al exceso de toxicidad de proteínas); Estas se metabolizan en el interior de las células convirtiéndose en “ácido úrico,” un metanolito que corre el riesgo de cristalizarse dentro de las articulaciones, ocasionando lo que conocemos como gota. También puede ocasionar formación de piedras o cálculos a nivel de las vías urinarias (algo realmente incómodo y doloroso) y empeorar condiciones como la artritis. ¿Alguna vez, han notado como cuando comen dietas altas en proteína empiezan a sonar muchos sus huesos, tienen más tensas y adoloridas sus articulaciones (menos flexibilidad), o dolores de espalda? Esta puede ser una de las razones. Para concluir, no les estoy diciendo que se alejen de las proteína, pero que si logren un balance en su alimentación, cualquiera que sean sus metas. Incluyan siempre frutas, hortalizas y lácteos bajos en grasa. Para tener una cantidad optima de proteínas, la mejor solución esta en hacer una “planificación” de tu menú diario. Así no te quedaras corta ni tendrás excesos de esta. Recuerda siempre cuidarte y tratarte con respeto (Amor Propio). Tu cuerpo es tu herramienta para alcanzar el éxito en todo lo que te propongas.

ately, there’s been a push from private and governmental agencies to promote the hiring of our veterans. There are radio ads by celebrities, tax incentives to employers and articles presenting the grave need for employment of our veterans; yet many are still ‘cautious’ about hiring veterans, why? They are service oriented, trained to fulfill their tasks, honorable, skilled and simply put, they are our heroes! We place our freedom in their hands, let’s us not be slow to extend a hand once they come back. According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, we had an alarming 52 percent unemployment rate for our service men and women in Miami-Dade County alone and close to 1500 homeless. As a community we must work together to remedy this situation. That is why for Miami-Dade County’s Military Affairs Board (MAB) this is matter of utmost priority to work in favor of reducing the unemployment rate among the military and their families. This is one of the missions of the Board, which was created to promote, attract and solicit military activities in Miami-Dade County, as well as advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance. Aside from the work that has been done with the Department of Labor in conjunction the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), Miami Dade College, South Florida Workforce, The Beacon Council South Florida Industry Liaison Group and The Coalition of Chambers of Commerce to create a Veteran job Fair and we have assisted people on a case-to-case bases utilizing the resources represented within the Board. Currently, the MAB is in conversations with Career Source South Florida to work closely together and promote their training and financial incentives, as well as specific veteran services, among the military community in our county. Career Source South Florida has placed a service focus on our veterans. Every one of their Career Centers has dedicated staff that works specifically with veterans and their families, providing priority workforce services to veterans (especially veterans with barriers to employment) and employers on behalf of veterans. Some of their services include: On-the-Job Training (OJT) provides an incentive

for businesses to help defray the cost of training eligible prospective, full-time hires. The OJT is designed to provide resources for occupational training and development for prospective new hire(s) in the company’s work environment. Businesses may recoup up to 90%, and in some instances 100%, of wages paid to each new hire during the agreed upon training period. Paid Work Experience (PWE) incentive provides businesses with workers for a specified period of time to gain paid work experience. The salary of the worker is paid, at no cost to the business during the term of the agreement. There is a dual benefit to this incentive. The new worker(s) gains job-specific skills; while helping the business increase productivity and meet their needs. Employed Worker Training (EWT) is a federally funded grant available to assist businesses interested in upgrading the skills of their existing workforce. Businesses may be reimbursed up to 50% of the training expenses incurred during the specified period. The reimbursement can be used to cover instructor salaries/tuition, books, materials/supplies. Interested businesses who want to improve employee retention, occupational skills attainment and productivity are encouraged to participate in this incentive. Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal income tax credit that provides incentives to private for-profit businesses to encourage the hiring of individuals from certain qualified targeted

groups of jobseekers. This incentive can reduce a business’ federal income tax liability up to $2,400 or $4,800 during the first year of employment of a member of a targeted group or up to $9,000 over two years, depending on the qualified employee. There is no limit to the number of qualified employees for which an employer may receive this tax credit. Unemployment is one of issues our service men and women must deal with when returning home or while away. Our focus is to find solutions and resources to make their life easier and stress-free after all their sacrifices, as well as to assure them that their commitment to this great country is not in vain. As Chairman of the Board, I have met with many of our men and women, and the reality is that unemployment, housing, health and welfare are all important factors each of them face when they return from serving our country. It is imperative that we recognize the issues and come together as a community to extend a helping hand and embrace the needs of the military families in our midst; while honoring their courage and service. Let’s Hire Vets! We can all do our part to assist the service men and women to whom our freedom and protection are entrusted. Gran asistencia en Eggstravaganza de Doral

www.doralfamiyjournal.com Con una gran asistencia de personas acudieron el sábado 12 de abril al JC Bermudez Park para participar en el evento anual Eggstravaganza. Aproximadamente 8.500 personas asistieron a este evento orientado a la familia representando un incremento del 112 % en asistencia en comparación al evento inaugural en el 2005. Todos los presentes tuvieron la oportunidad de fotografiarse con el Conejito de Doral, y disfrutar de una gran variedad de juegos mecánicos, y por supuesto, los niños recogieron algunos huevitos de los 48.000 huevos que se esparcieron e incluso algunos tenían premios especiales por si alguien encontraba los huevitos de oro. Una vez más, felicitamos a la Ciudad de Doral y al Departamento de Parques y Recreación, por hacer una excelente labor y crear actividades como esta, que son para el disfrute de todos los residentes de la ciudad.

Festival de Primavera en JIS K-8 Center

El 12 de abril del 2014, se llevó a cabo el primer Festival de Primavera en John I. Smith K-8 Center. En dicha actividad participaron los estudiantes, padres y maestros de la escuela. Este festival se realizó con el objetivo de festejar en familia la llegada de la primavera, con varias actividades para la comunidad escolar y a la vez, fue una excelente manera de recaudar fondos para usos de la escuela.

Orangetheory Fitness, ya abrió sus puertas en Doral

El pasado 17 de abril, se dio lugar la ceremonia de inauguración del nuevo Orangetheory Fitness Gym en nuestra ciudad. Sus dueños, Sara Castillo y Alex Garcia, le dieron la bienvenida a un centenar de asistentes, que entre familiares, amigos y entrenadores, fueron testigos de tradicional corte de cinta, junto a la Vice Alcaldesa Christi Fraga y la concejal Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera.
