The goal is to award as many active youth as possible from our community.

The Waiting Game

hile residents of Doral wait patiently for the Commission on Ethics and Public Trust to decide about Mayor Luigi Boria’s conflict of interest -or lack thereof-, the Doral Council continued its business at a Special Council Meeting. Of course, Mayor Boria had to recuse himself pending the investigation. The only item on the Special Council’s agenda concerned the now controversial Grand Floridian land. The business at hand was to decide whether or not they should grant a zoning change to the 5-acre parcel recently annexed to a 12-acre land that will eventually hold multimillion dollar homes. The future properties are mainly targeted to well-to-do Venezuelan families, or as their own bench ads imply, to the one percent. The Commission had to decide whether or not there was a conflict of interest when the Mayor gave his adult children millions of dollars to invest in that land. Despite the fact that they don’t own it anymore, the whole issue has become a maze. It has been two months since the investigation by the Ethics Commission started so the city went ahead and placed the item on the agenda. Though the meeting started with a “solemn and quite” atmosphere, as Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz stated, after more than an hour of discussion the crowd got routy, the attorney kept asking for the public to keep decorum, Ruiz herself abruptly left the dais and

the drama of the Grand Floridian continues. When there was still relative peace during the public comments several attendees stood up to show their support of the project but Vice-Mayor Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera quickly pointed out that not all of those who stood-up live in the city. That gave a clear message. We are not here to be intimidated. The Council had a very hot issue in front of them, especially after several council members have commented to the press they will wait until the Ethics Commission’s ruling before casting their vote. The problem is, the Ethics Commission has not given an opinion and nobody really knows when it will be rendered. According to the Executive Director of the MiamiDade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust, Joseph Centorino, the commission does not have enough

information at this time. “In the event that we issue an opinion we will notify you immediately,” Centorino wrote in an email to city attorney John Herin. Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez did remind the council that this matter is still under investigation. “I have nothing against the merits of the project but I feel it is still pending.” Councilwoman Cristy Fraga who back in June originally felt uncomfortable voting on something that could put them as council and the city under ethical scrutiny, suggested to wait. The atmosphere really changed when Councilwoman Ruiz confronted the Vice-Mayor on her comments about the way Ruiz has voted in the pass. That gave way to a sudden request to review her vote record before she stood-up and left. At the end, and in the abundance of caution, the four council members decided to postpone voting on the issue until the September 25th zoning meeting while directing the city attorney to contact the Ethics Commission and request the ethical implications of this application and how voting on this item -without an ethics opinion- would affect the elected officials and the city as a whole. The day of meetings at Doral could not end with another chapter on the red-light-cameras, a topic that what discussed during the regular council meeting. Manager Joe Carollo even suggested they may need metal detectors at the place where the new magistrate will review the tickets. Following the new stipulations by the Florida legislature, the amendments to the law could add additional costs to the violations, and according to the manager, penalizing people even more. Doral is considering adding a timer at those intersections to warn drivers when the light will change but at $1,600 a piece, Mayor Boria preferred to protect the taxpayers’ money and instead lower the dollar amount per ticket. The rest of the council pointed out the city doesn’t have the authority to do that. Though he may try to protect the people’s money, we know that Mayor Boria likes to buy. There is no shame on that. As we have written in previous columns, he has all the right to fulfill his American Dream. What is interesting is to observe his buying habits. First example that comes to mind is his practice of buying media time. At least two popular Spanish radio stations, Actualidad 1020 and La Poderosa, carry programs bought by Mayor Luigi Boria. Thankfully, he’s using his own money and apparently does not use city time to produce the shows. But that doesn’t stop him from talking about city issues on the air. Few days

prior to the August 21st meeting, Mayor Boria used his space on La Poderosa to suggest there was corruption in Doral. Without naming specific names, the Mayor indirectly hinted at one or two council members who may be receiving bribes concerning the red-light cameras. This is the Mayor’s plot: the company which holds the contract with the City on red-light-cameras is “buying” the vote of council members to avoid canceling the contract. This is a serious accusation and the results are obviously reflected on the dais. The atmosphere during the council meeting was sometimes as uncomfortable as the one described at the Rotary Club table. Council member Ana Maria Rodriguez did mention these accusations and called the Mayor on this. But if the atmosphere from the Rotary event generated a caricature on the paper –and great amusement along with it-, what happens on that dais is more serious, and does affect us all. The red-light-cameras will continue in Doral, and come September, if the Grand Floridian project is finally approved, many Latin American buyers will see this as a good investment in one of the great cities in South Florida, until of course they step out of their threshold and don’t smell the roses.

ientras que los residentes de Doral esperan pacientemente a que la Comisión de Ética del Condado Miami Dade decida sobre el conflicto de intereses del Alcalde Luigi Boria - o falta de ellos -, el Concejo de la ciudad de Doral continuó su actividad en una sesión especial. Por supuesto, el alcalde Boria tuvo que excusarse en espera de la investigación. El único punto de orden del día del Concejo especial se refería a la actual polémica sobre las tierras del Grand Floridian. El tema en cuestión era decidir si deben o no conceder un cambio de zonificación de la parcela de 5 hectáreas recientemente anexada a un terreno de 12 acres en el que eventualmente se construirán casas multimillonarias. Las futuras propiedades están enfocadas principalmente a familias venezolanas de alto poder adquisitivo, y como sus propios anuncios dicen, al uno por ciento. La Comisión tendrá que decidir si hubo o no un conflicto de intereses cuando el alcalde le regaló a sus hijos millones de dólares para invertir en esas tierras. A pesar de que actualmente ya no son dueños de estas tierras, todo el asunto se ha convertido en un laberinto. Han pasado dos meses desde que la Comisión de Ética iniciara la investigación a lo que la ciudad se adelantó y colocó el tema en el orden del día. A pesar que la reunión se inició en un ambiente “solemne y tranquilo” como mencionó la concejal Sandra Ruiz, después de más de una hora de discusión el público empezó a alborotarse; el abogado exigió varias veces mantener el decoro; la misma Ruiz abandonó abruptamente el estrado y así continuó el drama de Grand Floridian.

Cuando todavía había una paz relativa durante los comentarios públicos, varios de los asistentes se pusieron de pie para mostrar su apoyo al proyecto, pero la ViceAlcaldesa Bettina Rodríguez-Aguilera se apresuró a señalar que no todos los que se pusieron de pie viven en la ciudad. ¡Eso dio un mensaje claro! El Concejo no estaba ahí para ser intimidado. En efecto, el Concejo tiene frente a ellos un tema muy candente… Especialmente cuando varios miembros han comentado a la prensa que esperarían hasta que el fallo de la Comisión de Ética antes de emitir su voto. El problema es que la Comisión de Ética no ha emitido dictamen alguno y nadie

sabe realmente cuándo lo hará. Según el Director Ejecutivo de la Comisión de Ética de Miami-Dade, José Centorino, la Comisión no dispone de información suficiente en este momento. “En el caso de que emitamos una opinión lo notificaremos inmediatamente”, escribió Centorino en un correo electrónico dirigido al abogado de la ciudad John Herin. La concejal Ana María Rodríguez recordó al Consejo que este asunto sigue siendo objeto de investigación y comentó: “No tengo nada en contra de los méritos del proyecto, pero me parece que todavía está pendiente” y la Concejal Christi Fraga quien en el pasado mes de junio originalmente se sintió incómoda al votar en algo que podría poner a la Alcaldía y la ciudad bajo escrutinio ético, sugirió esperar. El ambiente cambió cuando se enfrentaron la concejal Ruiz y la Vice Alcaldesa Rodríguez Aguilera por los comentarios de ésta al referirse a la forma en que Ruiz ha votado en el pasado sobre el tema. Eso dio lugar a una repentina petición para revisar su historial de voto antes que Ruiz se levantara y se retirara de la reunión, para volver a los pocos minutos. Al final, y para ser abundantemente precavidas, las cuatro miembros del consejo decidieron posponer la votación sobre el asunto hasta la reunión de zonificación el próximo 25 de septiembre. Por otro lado, le pidieron al abogado de la ciudad ponerse en contacto con la Comisión de Ética para solicitar las implicaciones éticas de esta aplicación y cómo afectaría a los oficiales electos y la ciudad votar sobre este tema – sin tener el dictamen ético. El día de reuniones en el Concejo de Doral no podía terminar sin saber qué pasaría con las cámaras en los semáforos. Este fue un tema que se discutió durante la reunión ordinaria del Consejo. El administrador de la ciudad, Joe Carollo, llegó a sugerir que podrían necesitar detectores de metales en el lugar donde el nuevo magistrado revisará las multas. Siguiendo las nuevas disposiciones por parte de la legislatura de la Florida, las enmiendas a la ley podrían agregar también costos adicionales para las violaciones, y de acuerdo con el administrador, podría incluso penalizar a la gente aún más. Durante la reunión se mencionó que Doral está considerando añadir un contador de tiempo en algunas intersecciones para advertir a los conductores cuándo la luz va a cambiar, a un costo de $ 1.600 cada uno, a lo que el alcalde Boria dijo que prefería proteger el dinero de los contribuyentes y en su lugar reducir la cantidad de dólares por multa. El resto del consejo señaló que la ciudad no tiene la autoridad para hacerlo. A pesar de que acostumbra proteger el dinero del pueblo, sabemos que el alcalde Boria le gusta comprar. Como hemos escrito en columnas anteriores, él

tiene todo el derecho de cumplir su sueño americano. Lo que es interesante es observar sus hábitos de compra. El primer ejemplo que viene a la mente es la práctica que tiene de comprar espacio en los medios de comunicación. Al menos dos estaciones de radio populares en español, Actualidad 1020 y La Poderosa, emiten programas pagados por el alcalde Boria. Gracias a Dios lo hace usando su propio dinero y al parecer no utiliza tiempo de la ciudad para producir los shows. Pero eso no le impide hablar de temas de la ciudad en el aire. Pocos días antes de la reunión del 21 de agosto, el alcalde Boria utilizó su espacio en La Poderosa para sugerir que había corrupción en Doral. Sin dar nombres específicos, dio a entender indirectamente que uno o dos miembros del concejo podrían estar recibiendo sobornos con respecto al asunto de las cámaras en los semáforos. Esto es lo que Boria plantea: la empresa que tiene el contrato con la ciudad de las cámaras en los semáforos está “comprando” el voto de los miembros del consejo para evitar la cancelación del contrato. Esta es una acusación grave y los resultados se reflejaron obviamente en el estrado. El ambiente durante la reunión del concejo era a veces tan incómodo como el descrito en la mesa del Rotary Club en nuestra editorial de la edición anterior. La concejal Ana María Rodríguez mencionó el incidente de la radio y le llamó la atención al Alcalde con respecto a esas acusaciones. Pero si el ambiente del evento en el Rotary club generó una caricatura en un periódico –y un buen momento de entretenimiento- lo que ocurre en el estrado del Concejo es más serio y nos afecta a todos. Al final, las cámaras en los semáforos continuarán en Doral, y llegado septiembre, si el proyecto Grand Floridian es finalmente aprobado, muchos compradores latinoamericanos verán esto como una buena inversión en una de las grandes ciudades del sur de Florida, hasta el momento en que salgan del umbral de la casa y no huela necesariamente a rosas.

Don’t be fooled: Our library is still in danger By: Laura Tobi

I like the books there. The place is calm, I like the environment, “says Paula Gomez (11) referring to the public library on 58th Street, Doral. Paula loves the library to the point that upon learning of its possible closure she took matters into her own hands to try to avoid it. Along with her cousin, Noryam Guillen (9 years old), 573 signatures were collected to convince Mr. Boria, the mayor of Doral, to take action. Paula’s father, Mauricio Gomez, then contacted the mayor’s office and sent him the scanned signatures, which contributed significantly to persuade the powers that be to remove our library from the list of closures. We admire Paula’s civic responsibility, we are proud to count her as one of us. Although her parents originally started collecting the signatures, it was her idea to stand at the entrance of Publix (prior authorization from the manager) to ask for signatures, explaining the situation to every person that went by. Paula reads at least two books a week either for pleasure or to meet school requirements. As I was told by Walter Zapata, father of three who has lived in Doral for 17 years “Libraries are a very important economic tool, since we borrow 7 to 10 books weekly for our children to read, get educated, take the habit of reading and do not need to purchase them “. A quick calculation results in an annual sum of about $3640 if we conservatively assume an average of $10 per book.

Many newcomers to our city, and to this country, are unaware of the treasure that the public library is. (See article on the issue http://www.doralfamilyjournal.com/doralour-library-is-in-danger-of-closing/ and www.mdpls.org 7/28/13)… It is not only about books, but about a cultural space where members of our community interested in creativity, culture and even sports like chess, find a space to develop and enrich their minds. Leticia Castro, who lives in Doral since 1999 and has two daughters told me: “ The best way to have a good useful time was going to the library. When we got to this country that was quite an experience, an outing, taking free craft classes, watching a bit of theater and choosing books of all kinds, was an adventure. My daughters waited for the day we went to the library with great enthusiasm. Even now, after 14 years, it is still an adventure. To return home with a mountain of books is an activity that we still enjoy. “ Unfortunately many of our leaders do not appreciate how important it is to keep the library system full operation. Although they now say they will keep most of the libraries open, many brutal cuts on the service hours, the services themselves and all staff cuts, the librarians who are the lifeblood of what happens in the institution. Again Paula is surprised when I tell her this. She believes that the signatures

10 collected have resulted in keeping safe this magical place full of adventures.

She is surprised with the idea of losing librarians who know her by her first name. With her eyes wide open, she tells me how it is them who give her advice and information about things that interest her, they let her know about tutoring programs, of magic or learning how to write stories, all being free programs at the public library. Don’t be fooled: Our Public Library is still at risk. I can only agree with Paula, and pray that our library not only remains open, but to keep doing it at all times, offering all its wonderful services, and above all, with all its amazing librarians. This depends not only on Paula, but on each and every one of us. Without your action, our public library will be mutilated on October 1st. Paula Gomez will receive a scholarship to attend The Art Shack equivalent to one dollar for every signature she gathered, in recognition for her effort. No se deje engañar: Nuestra biblioteca aún sigue en peligro Por Laura Tobi

Me gustan los libros de allí. El lugar es calmado, me gusta el ambiente” dice Paula Gómez de11 años, haciendo referencia a la biblioteca pública de Doral en la calle 58. Paula ama la biblioteca al punto que al enterarse de su posible cierre se puso en campaña para tratar de evitarlo y junto a su prima Noryam Guillen de 9 años, recolectó 573 firmas de los residentes de Doral para convencer al alcalde Boria para que tomará cartas en el asunto. El padre de Paula, Mauricio Gómez, contacto luego al alcalde y le envió las firmas escaneadas, lo que contribuyo de manera significativa a la gestión para que nuestra biblioteca fuera retirada de la lista de cierres.

Lamentablemente muchos de nuestros gobernantes no aprecian lo importante que es mantener el sistema de bibliotecas en pleno funcionamiento, y aunque por ahora dicen que mantendrán la mayoría de las bibliotecas abiertas, se avecinan brutales cortes en los horarios de servicios, los servicios en sí y sobre todo recortes en el personal, los bibliotecarios que son el alma de lo que allí ocurre. Nuevamente Paula se sorprende cuando le comento esto, ella cree que sus firmas han logrado evitar que este lugar mágico y lleno de aventuras se vea afectado. Especialmente se sorprende con la idea de perder a los bibliotecarios que la conocen por su nombre de pila. Con los ojos abiertos de par en par me cuenta que ellos la asesoran, le dan información sobre cosas que le interesan, la informan sobre programas de tutorías, de magia o aprender a escribir cuentos, todos programas gratuitos en la biblioteca pública. Yo no puedo más que coincidir con ella, y rogar que nuestra biblioteca no solo permanezca abierta, sino que lo siga haciendo en todos sus horarios, prestando todos sus maravillosos servicios, y sobre todo, con todos sus maravillosos bibliotecarios. Esto no depende solo de Paula, sino de todos nosotros. Si no actuamos, la biblioteca publica se vera mutilada irremediablemente el 1ro de Octubre.

La responsabilidad cívica de Paula nos admira, nos da orgullo tenerla entre nosotros. Si bien sus padres comenzaron con el listado de firmas, fue ella la de la idea de pararse frente al Publix (previa autorización del manager) a pedir las firmas, explicando la situación a cada persona que se acercaba. Ella lee por lo menos dos libros por semana tanto por placer como para cumplir con los requisitos de la escuela. arla Mavares and Rhiana Suarez, who are former students of Doral Middle School in Doral, Florida, received top honors and GOLD medals for their participation in the S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events at Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2013 National Leadership Meeting recently held in Nashville, Tennessee. Carla Mavares, who will be attending Design and Architecture Senior High School, and Rhiana Suarez, who will be attending Ronald Reagan Senior School, and are respectively the daughters of Reynaldo and Solange Mavares, and Nelsy and Jose Suarez, received Gold medals in the following competitive events: Recycle and Redesign and Focus on Children. Their Gold medals were presented at a recognition session honoring all participants at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center on Thursday, July 11, 2013. In attendance were more than 7,000 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members, advisors, alumni, and guests from across the country that convene in Nashville, Tennessee, from July 7-11 for FCCLA’s 2013 National

Leadership Conference. This conference is themed “Discover Your Voice” and challenges participants to confront the issues youth are facing today by gaining the necessary skills through leadership development and competitive events. Carla, a S.T.A.R. participant in the Recycle and Redesign competitive event, applied recycle and redesign skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences courses and created a display using a sample of her skills. Carla selected used fashion, home, and other post-consumer items to recycle into a new product. She then demonstrated this product to her peers at Doral Middle and the community members. Her project entitled, “Creating a New World One Accessory at a Time,” outlined the programs and services provided for the community. Rhiana, a S.T.A.R. participant, was involved in the Focus on Children competitive event that recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences skills to plan and conduct a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community. Rhiana’s project entitled, “Do Not Sink, FLOAT!” focused on bullying, and was the result of a considerable amount of research she conducted on an issue that is considered serious and has a personal impact on families and communities. “Creating this project taught us a great deal about organizing and presenting information to others and we learned that even we can make a difference,” they said. “We were able to travel and connect with other FCCLA members from all over the country, and this provided us with an opportunity for personal development and preparation for adult life.” Nuris I. Throughout the 13 years at Doral Middle School, the FCCLA members tackle issues such as teen violence, traffic safety, family issues, career exploration, and much more. FCCLA through Family and Consumer Sciences education at Doral Middle enriches students learning, improves selfesteem, and serves students with a range of ability levels, economic situations, and cultural influences. It is unique among youth organizations because it is the only career and technical in-school student organization with family as its central focus.

A child that is active in school, in sports, is prone to accidents. You can’t have them in a bubble. Being active in the playground, in Physical Education, injuries just happen and sometimes can’t be prevented. It is all about the angle where you hurt the bone.” Even with the use of helmets, shin guards and other protective gear, people involved in sports can get injuries that need to be tended as soon as possible. “Once an injury happens, has to be addressed immediately, that is the most important thing, not disregarding an injury”, explains Serralta,”because the longer you wait the poorer the outcome and the longer it takes to recover, and the longest you will suffer pain. DETECTING INJURIES IN CHILDREN Having an active, happy, healthy child is every parent’s desire. However, sometimes children get injuries or complain of pain that seem to be mild and end up being important or covering major conditions.

Ms. Serralta summarized several aspects that parents have to pay attention in their children to ensure that mild injury on the arm or knee is just a bruise and not something more serious, and when to seek immediate medical attention: “Head injuries can cause from temporary disturbances in vision or memory, headache, nausea and even changes in personality.” In the event a head injury causes any of the symptoms mentioned before it is a medical emergency that has to be taken to the nearest Emergency Room because it is life threatening. “There are many injuries that are unique to children. A lot of them we are able to attend and solve in Orthonow and regular urgent care don’t catch them. Children are tricky because they have the growth plates, the growth centers where the bone elongates when the child grows. Fractures sometimes are not obvious. They have to be looked at in a special way. To understand children’s X-rays you fall back to your experience and the clinical exam to rule out major injuries and treat accordingly.” “Every parent should be aware that when a child is guarding a limb, holding it close to their body and refusing to use it, anything out of the ordinary, pain that lasts more than 2 days in a limb , there must be something wrong with it, it is hurting and must be tended properly. These tests asses the brain function of the child by evaluating their learning and memory skills, ability to pay attention or concentrate, problem solving skill, etc. It is recommended by the CDC for children over 10 years of age that will be involved in sports. About that program, which is offered for free in Orthonow every Saturday by appointment, Ms. Serralta explains: “Helmets are essential! But even with protective gear you get people with injuries. Concussions have to be addressed, and they can occur even with a helmet. Their repercussions are very important. With the baseline testing you can have a reference in case a child gets a head injury or concussion.” “Every parent that is going to have a child engaged in sports should get their baseline testing, because in case of a concussion you check the baseline to ensure everything is well with the child. Parents receive a report and we keep a copy. In case a child has an injury that has to be checked, they have the documentation to compare as reference, for a neurologist or surgeon that might need it.”

Tienes que ver al paciente como un todo, comprender sus circunstancias de vida, darles calma y confianza, y asegurarles que si siguen cuidadosamente tus instrucciones muy pronto volverán a su vida normal”. “Desafortunadamente las personas activas están en riesgo de lesiones, especialmente los niños; un niño activo, que hace deporte, que va al parque tiene siempre alguna probabilidad de lesionarse, no lo puedes meter en una burbuja. Las lesiones accidentales suceden y a veces no pueden prevenirse porque dependen del ángulo en el cual se golpee el hueso”. Aun con el uso de cascos, coderas, rodilleras y otros protectores, quienes hacen deportes pueden lesionarse y deben atenderse lo antes posible. “Cuando sucede una lesión debe atenderse inmediatamente. Lo más importante es no desestimar una lesión” explica Serralta, “porque cuanto más tarde en atenderse tiene más riesgo de agravarse, la persona tendrá dolor por más tiempo y tardará más en recuperarse. En las lesiones ortopédicas el punto va más allá de la prevención. Lo más importante es la atención inmediata”.

Cuando un niño sufre una lesión o se queja de algún dolor, aunque sea leve, puede estar cubriendo una condición más importante que es necesario atender con prontitud. La Srta. Serralta resumió varios aspectos que los padres deben tomar en cuenta y observar en sus hijos, para determinar si ese golpe o lesión que parece leve en el brazo, pierna o rodilla enmascara algo más importante y requiere atención especializada. “Cualquier lesión en la cabeza que pueda causar fallas en la visión y la memoria, dolor de cabeza, nausea o cambios en la personalidad es una emergencia médica que debe atenderse de inmediato en la sala de emergencia más cercana”. “Existen sin embargo otras lesiones ortopédicas

que solamente ocurren en la infancia. Muchas de ellas las atendemos en Orthonow y en un servicio de urgencia regular no las detectan. Las lesiones ortopédicas infantiles son complejas porque como ellos tienen las placas de crecimiento, los centros donde los huesos se estiran al crecer, a veces las fracturas no son obvias. Las radiografías infantiles tienen que mirarse de manera especial para comprenderlas y es necesaria mucha experiencia y un detallado examen clínico para detectar lesiones mayores y tratarlas adecuadamente”. “Todo padre debe estar pendiente si su hijo trata de protegerse su brazo, pierna, mano, pie; si evita utilizarlo; si se queja de dolor así sea leve por más de dos días. Algo está sucediendo en ese niño y hay que mirarlo para detectar si hay algo más que atender y corregir. Lo más pronto que se atiendan las lesiones de hueso y músculo, más rápida será la recuperación y mejor la prognosis.” “Si le duele por más de un día, venga para revisarlo. Es mejor atenderse a tiempo que sufrir dolor por más tiempo y además terminar después con un yeso. La recuperación va a ser más larga”, concluye Serralta. NEW BUILDING: MAJOR ADVANTAGES With a total of 3,200 students registered and several initiatives being developed, it is expected that the school must have extensive facilities. Aware of this need, Doral Academy will “cut the ribbon” on a brand new three-story building in early September this year. This building will be devoted exclusively to sports and arts. Director Rodriguez added, “This new building will be awesome. The first floor is equipped with an indoor sports gym with high-tech cameras that will transmit live games that parents can watch online from the comfort of their homes or offices. The second floor features a variety of fitness equipment like any modern gym in the zone. Both floors are decorated with City of Doral and Doral Academy logos so students can identify themselves with local values. Finally, the third floor will be devoted exclusively to the music area, including a high quality sound system, new and modern instruments, and individual practice rooms where students can experience the sound at a higher level.” This will certainly provide an outstanding education for the students.

They will now have “Math Research” as one of their electives. At this point in the program, only students in grades 6th to 9th are participating but it is expected that all grades will be included this coming school year.

DORAL ACADEMY SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY The technology program that began last year has grown so much that it is now formally Doral Academy School of Technology. It’s enrollment adds up to 350 more students in the middle school. This school is a response to the needs of today’s world of young people who specialize in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (known in English as STEM) and offers the most advanced education alternative for local youth interested in these areas. The curriculum of the School of Technology aims to encourage students to pursue innovation, and to develop complex reasoning skills and problem solving, hence offering specialized classes such as robotics, program design, and planning and engineering of cities, in addition to advanced classes and courses for high school credit. Students participate in several local and national competitions throughout the year allowing them to display their skills and learn in an interactive way.

SCHOLAR PROGRAM: UNIVERSITY EDUCATION DORAL ACADEMY- MIAMI DADE COLLEGE - FIU The strategic alliance between Doral Academy, Miami Dade College (MDC) and Florida International University (FIU), which began last year, has become even more successful during this school year. Through this initiative, students in high school, beginning in the 9th grade, have the opportunity to take a combination of Advanced Placement Courses and Dual Enrollment Courses at MDC and FIU and could cover up to two years in a career. “With this program, our students can take up to 60 college credits and graduate with their High School Diploma and an Associate of Arts Degree from Miami Dade College,” explains Principal Rodriguez. Students who complete this program can start their upper level education in the third year of studies at FIU, any other university in the State of Florida or transfer their credits nationwide. During the summer break, a total of 6 classes were offered to 180 students and it is expected this number will increase during this school year. In order to do this, Doral Academy will arrange transportation to MDC or FIU for sophomores and juniors as a way to relieve any limitations in attending this program. Classes will continue to be taught by MDC and FIU’s teachers at these institutions with free tuition and textbooks. Although commitment is required and the program is demanding, there is no doubt that this a very attractive option for higher education, especially considering the concern of many parents about how they will finance their children’s higher education costs.

This five-story building will offer additional parking areas and will be devoted exclusively to the School of Science and Technology. A future plan being considered is to create an auditorium, a court yard, and a club house in the sports field with special concessions for the enjoyment of the student population. the curriculum by offering the new program “Young Audiences Art” with the participation of known artists who will visit the school twice a week to take part in the reading and history classes of students in 6th - 9th grade. The purpose of this artist involvement initiative is to offer Doral Academy students the opportunity to enjoy and learn about different cultures and art at the same time. By artists sharing their life experiences and talents through music and art, students will gain a completely new view of the outside world. In the security area, the school has increased the security staff so that they now have 20 full-time guards. They have also installed 80 new cameras in the new building totaling nearly 300 distributed along all buildings with live broadcast to all school administrators. Other changes were implemented including access control in all buildings, parking areas and cafeteria. These external measures will be reinforced by holding workshop sessions and talks to parents about safety, proper use of media and electronics and similar other topics in a way to integrate parents and school’s efforts in protecting youth. NUEVO EDIFICIO: MAYORES VENTAJAS Con una población total de 3,200 estudiantes y variadas iniciativas andando, es de suponer que la escuela necesita amplias instalaciones. Es por eso que en los primeros días del mes de septiembre se estrenará un nuevo edificio de tres pisos dedicado exclusivamente a deportes y arte. En palabras del Director Rodríguez, este “nuevo edificio será impresionante. El primer piso tendrá una cancha deportiva con cámaras de alta tecnología que transmitirán juegos en vivo para que los padres puedan verlos desde en la comodidad de su hogar u oficina. El segundo piso contará con un área de pesas y variadas máquinas de ejercicios como cualquier gimnasio moderno. Ambos pisos estarán decorados con logos de la Ciudad del Doral y de Doral Academy de forma que los alumnos se sientan identificados con los valores locales. Por último, el tercer piso estará dedicado exclusivamente al área de música. Cuenta con un sistema de sonido de muy alta calidad, instrumentos nuevos y modernos, y espacios para practicas individuales donde los estudiantes puedan vivenciar el sonido a un nivel superior”. Esto sin duda ofrecerá una de educación distinta para los estudiantes.

ESCUELA DE TECNOLOGÍA El programa de tecnología que comenzó el año pasado, ha crecido tanto que es ahora formalmente la Escuela de Tecnología Doral Academy cuya matrícula es de 350 estudiantes cursando educación media. Esta escuela surge como respuesta a la necesidad del mundo actual de jóvenes que se especialicen en áreas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemática (conocido en ingles con las siglas STEM) y especialmente, ofrecer una alternativa de educación aún más avanzada para los jóvenes locales con inclinaciones en estas áreas. El plan de estudios de esta Escuela de Tecnología tiene como objetivo impulsar a los estudiantes a buscar la innovación, a desarrollar la capacidad de razonamiento complejo y resolución de problemas; por ello ofrece clases especializadas como robótica, desarrollo y diseño de programas, y planificación e ingeniería de ciudades, adicional a las clases de nivel avanzado y cursos de créditos de escuela secundaria. Los estudiantes participan en distintas competencias locales y nacionales que les permite mostrar sus habilidades y aprender de una forma interactiva. NUEVO PROGRAMA “MATH RESEARCH” En línea con el ideal del Director Rodríguez de “reforzar las áreas de ciencias y matemáticas en esta escuela”, Doral Academy está estrenando el programa

“Math Research” mediante el cual los estudiantes podrán aplicar las matemáticas en diferentes áreas de estudio. A final del año escolar pasado, se realizaron diferentes pruebas a todos los estudiantes de la escuela y se seleccionaron los 25 estudiantes más sobresalientes quienes cursaron dos semanas intensivas de matemáticas en verano y ahora tendrán como electiva “Math Reserch”. En este nuevo programa participan estudiantes de 6to a 9no grado y se espera que pueda extenderse para toda la escuela este próximo periodo escolar. PROGRAMA UNIVERSITARIO: MIAMI DADE COLLEGE – FIU La alianza universitaria entre Doral Academy, Miami Dade College (MDC) y Florida International University (FIU) que comenzó el año pasado, se ha consolidado aún más durante este periodo escolar. Gracias a esta iniciativa, los alumnos de educación secundaria, comenzando en el 9no grado, tienen la posibilidad de cursar clases de nivel universitario y avanzar hasta dos años de carrera. “Con este programa, nuestros alumnos pueden tomar hasta 60 créditos universitarios y para el final del 12vo grado, no solo obtienen su diploma de educación secundaria sino además, culminan con un diploma de Asociado en Artes” explica el Director Rodríguez. MEJORAS Y PLANES FUTUROS Varias mejoras educativas han sido incorporadas en los programas existentes. Ahora se ofrecen clases avanzadas de crédito universitario en el área de Ciencias de Computación y Física. En el área de Artes Escénicas, se inaugurará el programa conocido como “Arte para Audiencias Jóvenes” en la que participaran conocidos artistas quienes visitaran la escuela dos veces por semana para enseñar clases de historia y lectura a jóvenes de 6to y 9no grado. La idea es que los estudiantes del programa de artes puedan “conocer más de cerca” la cultura

y experiencia que estos artistas les brindaran mediante su música, obras y arte en general. En el área de seguridad, la escuela ha incrementado su personal de vigilancia y se tienen 20 guardias a tiempo completo. Se han instalado 80 cámaras nuevas que suman casi 300 distribuidas en los distintos edificios con transmisión en vivo a todos los administradores de la escuela. Otros ajustes de acceso en los edificios, áreas de estacionamiento y cafetería se han implementado para controlar y limitar el paso de personas externas a cualquier área de la escuela. Estas medidas externas serán reforzadas con sesiones de trabajo y charlas a los padres sobre seguridad, uso apropiado de los medios electrónicos y similares para que el trabajo sea integral entre el hogar y la escuela. Hablando de infraestructura, se contempla la construcción de un nuevo edificio que estará ubicado en el terreno adyacente a la sede del Doral Academy Middle/High School cuya construcción se estima que comience a finales de este año. Este edificio de cinco pisos y áreas adicionales de estacionamiento, será dedicado exclusivamente a la Escuela de Ciencia y Tecnología. A mediano plazo se planea la creación de un auditorio, un área de jardines, plaza y un “Club House” en el área de deportes con concesiones particulares para el disfrute de la población estudiantil. Como se puede notar, Doral Academy continuará haciéndose sentir en esta comunidad por su crecimiento, alto nivel académico y alternativas innovadoras. Para ello, Doral Academy prestara servicio gratuito de transporte desde la escuela hasta las sedes de estas instituciones favoreciendo a aquellos alumnos que no tengan posibilidad de traslado. Las clases continuaran siendo impartidas por los mismos profesores de MDC y FIU, en la sede de estas instituciones, sin costo de matrícula o libros de texto. Aunque se requiere compromiso y el programa es exigente, sin duda alguna, es una atractiva opción de educación superior especialmente considerando la preocupación e interés de los padres en la forma en que financiarán la educación de sus hijos.

iferentes organizaciones comunitarias se unieron durante una campaña de recolección de firmas por distintos negocios del sur de la florida, pidiendo a los congresistas Ileana Ros-Lehtinen y Mario Diaz-Balart para que presionen y se pueda pasar la reforma migratoria de forma urgente. La concentración de estas organizaciones se dio, debido a la gran frustración que siente la población hispana por la falta de acción por parte de nuestros representantes para que se apruebe la reforma migratoria que abrirá paso a la ciudadanía de quienes se puedan beneficiar. El objetivo fue pedir a ambos representantes que tomen medidas concretas más fuertes para instar al Congreso a que pase la reforma migratoria, tales como instar al Grupo de los 7 a finalmente introducir su tan esperado proyecto de ley bipartidista; Pedir el liderazgo republicano de la Cámara que defina una fecha para votar en el pleno tan pronto como sea posible; y denunciar a los extremistas en el Partido Republicano que están bloqueando la reforma con retórica anti-latina y anti-inmigrante. “Los Representantes Ros-Lehtinen y Díaz-Balart han sido líderes de la reforma migratoria por años, y los necesitamos ahora más que nunca; no podemos esperar más, mientras las detenciones y deportaciones continúan separando a 1.400 familias a diario. Ileana y Mario tienen el poder de hacer algo más que decir que sí. Tienen que hacer que la reforma sea una realidad” comentó una de las voluntarias que apoyaron la recolección de firmas. “Voluntarios y activistas tocaron la puerta a mas de 45 pequeños negocios y todos apoyaron la reforma con camino a la ciudadanía y les explicamos que necesitamos construir un liderazgo para que apoyen a los inmigrantes. Uno de los problemas que ven los comerciantes especialmente de la ciudad de Sweetwater

es que sus ventas han bajado debido a las redadas, y la gente tiene miedo a ser deportados… Esto repercute en la economía ya que las personas prefieren ahorrar y mandar el dinero a sus países por miedo a ser deportados, con lo cual necesitamos reactivar la economía de los pequeños negocios quienes son los que generan la mayor fuerza laboral de los Estados Unidos. Estamos invitando a todas las cámaras de comercio en especial la de Doral donde residen tantos inmigrantes latinos, para que apoyen y le pidan a nuestros representantes que apoyen y promuevan la reforma”, comentó Ivan Parra, organizador comunitario de 1Miami.

ARMED nace en Venezuela. Obtuvo la Licenciatura en Artes Plásticas mención Educación en la Universidad Cecilio Acosta en la ciudad de Maracaibo, Venezuela. Cursó estudios de Diseño de Obras Civiles, Dibujo Técnico y Dibujo aplicado a las Artes Graficas. Trabajó como Dibujante Técnico, Humorístico y como Director de Creativo en Publicidad, en su país natal . Desde que llegó a Estados Unidos se ha desempeñado como Artista Plástico y diseñador creativo en diferentes proyectos, tales como en, Mills Corporation, Display Works Incs, y comisiones en Arte para empresas de Decoración.

Sus Obras de Arte han sido exhibidas en Venezuela en el Metro de Caracas, Poliedro de Caracas, Banco Central de Venezuela, Banco Mara, Museo de Artes Graficas, entre otras. En USA ha realizado exhibiciones de arte en varias galerías de arte tales como Gloria Allison Gallery, Faces Gallety, Piag Gallery y en J&W Gallery en Pensilvania entre otras. Y sus obras han sido adquiridas por coleccionistas y empresas privadas en Alemania, España, Grecia, Haiti, Venezuela, Costa Rica, República Dominicana, y USA. GARMED creo el afiche del Mes del Libro Hispano para la Celebración del Mes de la Hispanidad en la ciudad de Miami. “La intención creativa era lograr una imagen que reflejara la celebración y la participación emotiva de una comunidad hispana alegre,

que lee y ama la lectura. Mi trabajo artístico creativo siempre lleva la intención de expresar la alegría de la vida y queda plasmado a través del uso de el color vibrante e intenso. En los elementos que componen la imagen busco transmitir un mensaje donde la pureza y el bienestar, se exponga como sentimiento y al proyectarse en un trabajo creativo pictórico, despierte en el espectador ese sentir de bienestar y optimismo por la vida”, comenta GARMED. La imagen en el afiche de “Celebremos el mes del Libro Hispano 2013” esta hecha fusionando varias obras de arte, usando personajes de diferentes obras pictóricas de su autoría que refleja ese sentir de alegría y amor . “AIPEH planteo como idea principal “la celebración” y visualmente entré en un proceso gráfico de creación para dar con la imagen requerida haciendo uso de los recursos que ofrece el Photoshop para crear profesionalmente una imagen impactante con una lectura visual fácil y que fuera aceptada por todos. Cuando me hablaron de este proyecto, me motivo la idea de AIPEH, y de su gran labor cultural dentro de la Comunidad de Miami”. “La posibilidad de integrarme a esta comunidad

a salud no tiene precio. Y cada vez es más evidente como ha aumentado el consumo de la comida orgánica. Incluso personas que antes se negaban a cambiar, ahora están comprándola y consumiéndola, lo que indica que la gente está preocupándose más por su salud y por ende buscando comidas saludables, combinándolas con ejercicios, para mantener un buen estado físico. Sin embargo, todavía existen personas que no saben qué es la comida orgánica y cuáles son sus beneficios. Los productos orgánicos son aquellos alimentos, tanto de origen vegetal como animal, que son cultivados o criados de manera natural, están libres del uso de sustancias sintéticas, como pesticidas, fertilizantes, herbicidas, semillas genéticamente modificadas, etc. Es importante saber que durante gran parte de la historia, la agricultura pudo ser descrita como “orgánica”; es sólo durante el siglo XX cuando se introdujeron mu-

chos químicos dañinos para la naturaleza y el hombre. Los productos orgánicos están severamente regulados. Actualmente muchos países como EEUU, Japón, La Unión Europea, Canadá, México y muchos más requieren que los productores obtengan una certificación para poder ofrecer productos orgánicos. Así tú puedes saber cuáles productos son orgánicos y cuáles no: sólo debes buscar las certificaciones. Con respecto a los precios, los productos orgánicos sí son más caros, pero más caro es caer en una enfermedad por la falta de atención a tu salud. Claro, esto no quiere decir que si no comes orgánico te vas a enfermar, pero al comerlos le vas a dar una vuelta de 180 grados a tu salud, vas nutrir tu cuerpo de productos sin pesticidas, fertilizantes etc. que afectan enormemente la salud en general. Comer orgánico es de verdad un lujo necesario. En ocasiones cuestan el doble, pero se trata de calidad antes de cantidad. Por ejemplo, uno de sus beneficios principales es que, son más nutritivos. Muchos productos orgánicos tienen una mayor concentración de materia seca

(contenido de un alimento una vez eliminada el agua) y mayores cantidades de vitaminas, proteínas, azúcares naturales y minerales que los productos convencionales. También, ayudan a mantener el balance bioquímico de nuestro organismo, porque no contienen trazas de anabólicos ni de hormonas; y están libres de residuos tóxicos procedentes de fertilizantes sintéticos, antibióticos, aditivos y conservadores. Además tienen mejor sabor, la leche, por ejemplo, es más suave y ligera, mientras que el pan es un poco más duro, ya que contiene más fibra. Se ha demostrado que la comida orgánica contiene más vitaminas, minerales y antioxidantes, los cuales sirven para prevenir enfermedades como el cáncer. Hasta hace poco comprar productos orgánicos era una complicación, pero ahora se han extendido a los supermercados donde consigues productos orgánicos de uso diario, los precios están más accesibles, pues la competencia ya está creada, y también ya están abriendo muchos restaurantes completamente orgánicos. donis Diaz is 17 years old. A senior in high school, born and raised in Hialeah to Cuban parents, Adonis dreams of becoming an anesthesiologist but also dreams with the Olympic gold; and is working hard to achieve those goals. Having obtained the fifth place in the -55Kg category during the World Cadets Judo Championship celebrated in Doral, Fla. at the beginning of August, Adonis became the only member of the USA Judo Youth team to accumulate the points needed to qualify for the Youth Olympics in China 2014. Grandson of a judoka, he started practicing at 8 years old, along with playing baseball. His name has become well known in the judo circles, as one of the more promising figures of the sport of Judo in the United States. His style of fighting remembers the energy of the warrior Travis Stevens, who is one of his role models as well as Kayla Harrison, USA Judo only Olympic gold medalist. However, the name that inspires him is the legendary Tadahiro Nomura, the Japanese judoka, who is the only man in the world to have won the Olympic gold medal in Judo three times in a row. About his accomplishment of qualifying for the Youth Olympics, Adonis says that “it is part of the hard work that has helped me progress and get better in my sport. Now you always have to be practicing; I don’t only go to judo practice, I do weight training. And before weight training, you have to wake up early, eat well, you have to change your way of life before you can’t compete internationally”. Because for him there is no small competitor, they are all strong and well prepared and “you have to be ready for everybody.” He has been able to manage being excellent at school and judo practice with focus and a strong support system and Adonis is very grateful for that: “I want to thank all my training partners, coaches and my parents. The support from USA Judo has been great; they offered me the opportunities to get better. My family has been very helpful, and have given me all they can to achieve these goals. I want to continue training hard and attending more international camps, training and tournaments as well. I want to be a champion but in life I want to be like my parents: have a good life, a good family, decent house, put food on the table and just be happy.” Competing in home soil during the Cadets Championship was an extraordinary experience for Adonis, with all his family and friends encouraging him from the benches. To those fans and young judoka that are training hard to become successful Adonis Diaz has a message: “Train hard and put 100 % in everything that you do. It is not just judo. You have to do well at school. You have to do well in everything and then start doing well in judo. You have to have everything ready so when you start doing well in judo your all life is set and positive.”

Con ese logro, Adonis acumuló los puntos necesarios para convertirse en el único miembro del equipo juvenil de Judo de EEUU clasificado para las Olimpiadas Juveniles de China 2014. Comenzó a practicar Judo a los 8 años, a instancias de su abuelo, quien es judoka. Al poco tiempo ya su nombre comenzó a escucharse en el ambiente del judo infantil, hasta convertirse en una de las figuras más promisorias de las futuras generaciones del Judo en los EEUU. Su estilo de lucha recuerda mucho la energía del guerrero olímpico Travis Stevens, quien es uno de sus modelos, al igual que la campeona Kayla Harrison. Sin embargo, su mayor inspiración es el legendario judoka Japonés Tadahiro Nomura, quien tiene el record de ser el único medallista de oro en judo por tres Olimpiadas consecutivas. Adonis se encuentra muy satisfecho de haber calificado para las Olimpiadas Juveniles de China: “Es el resultado del gran esfuerzo y trabajo que he puesto para progresar y mejorar en el deporte. Hay que estar siempre practicando; No solamente hago judo sino también hago acondicionamiento físico. Hay que levantarse temprano, alimentarse bien. Tienes que cambiar tu vida antes de poder competir a nivel internacional”. Considera Adonis que no hay competidor pequeño, todos son fuertes y están bien preparados “uno tiene que estar bien preparado y listo para luchar con todos”. Para lograr mantener la excelencia en sus estudios y en el Judo, Adonis agradece todo el apoyo recibido de “mis padres, entrenadores y compañeros de práctica. También el apoyo de USA Judo ha sido maravilloso pues me han ofrecido oportunidades para progresar y mejorar cada vez más. Mi familia siempre me ha ayudado mucho y han hecho todo lo posible para que yo logre mis metas. Quiero seguir entrenando duro y asistiendo a competencias internacionales. Quiero ser un campeón, pero también quiero tener una vida feliz como me han enseñado mis padres”. Participar en una competencia internacional en su propia patria ha sido una experiencia extraordinaria para Adonis, quien tuvo la compañía de todos sus compañeros y familiares desde las gradas. Para todos los jóvenes judokas que se están entrenando para seguir sus sueños Adonis Díaz tiene un mensaje: “Siempre entrenen muy fuerte, poniendo el 100% en todo lo que hagan. Hay que ser excelente en los estudios antes de ser excelente en el Judo. Para poder ser exitosos en el deporte y en la vida hay que ser ordenado y positivo”.

Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School Back to School BBQ was a success The Back to School BBQ is a tradition for Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School since its first year. It is a get together celebration where students, parents and community meet again on the last Saturday of summer break to kick-off the new school year with a football scrimmage and free food, beverages and games courtesy of the PTSA, the Athletics Department and generous sponsors from the community. This year’s BBQ has been the most successful ever and the Bison Family welcomed the new principal Mr. Juan Carlos Silva to the school. The community sponsors that made this year’s BBQ possible were: Miami-Dade College, Chick-Fil-A, Equilibria Fitness, US Marine Corps, The Wise Computer, Einsteins Bros. Bagels, Burger King, Miami Music Project, Orthonow, Sam’s Club, I.Q. Zone, Doral Music Center, SmileStudio Associates Dentistry, Il Forno Ristorante, CB Music Lab, ILoveKickboxing and Tre Pazzi Ristorante. Mayor Luigi Boria and Councilwoman Christi Fraga attended the event and renewed their membership for the PTSA, a testament that it is the involvement of the parents and the commitment of the community what makes a school special and help children stay safe. During the 9th grade orientation the previous Monday 12th Mr. Silva expressed his expectations about the parental involvement in the school: “We are one team. Everybody is in it. The parents have to be the voice of understanding and support and we the teachers are here to instill a sense of responsibility and pride in our students. Parents, you are the gems of our school, let’s make the most of it together”.

he United States has one of the most inclusive systems of assistance for its military veterans than any other nation in the world. From the time that our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, and fought for our Country’s liberation, veterans were always a top priority. Now, as the country is trying to recover from the economic crisis and our soldiers are returning home, many veterans are worried that they will be forgotten in these tense economic times. Earlier this month President Barack Obama addressed these concerns at the Disabled American Veterans National Convention in Orlando, FL. The President stated “This time of war may be coming to an end, but the job of caring for veterans goes on.” Despite his words, the backlog of claims has grown immensely during the Obama administration. Part of this backlog problem has to do with the fact that more veterans have become eligible for benefits. For example, now veterans who have been disabled by Agent Orange and those experiencing Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder are also eligible for benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA). Thanks to some extreme measures taken by the VA, the backlog has been reduced by about 20 percent. The VA is now requiring claims processors in its 56 regional benefits offices to work overtime and is implementing a new computerized system in order to speed up the judgment of claims. While the VA continues to do everything they can to try and reduce the backlog claims created by a system that’s over burden, veterans are suffering greatly because many are not getting the attention they require in a timely manner. This systematic issue is hurting

more veterans than it is helping, according to Jeff Miller a United States House Representative, “preventable veteran deaths and other patient-safety issues” have developed in VA hospitals across the county. It is time to stop putting our veterans on the back burner, and take whatever measures are necessary in order to stop the backlog of claims and make sure that every veteran is receiving the care that they deserve in a timely manner. When called upon these brave men and woman didn’t make the country wait before going out and risking their lives to defend those at home. The same courtesy should be extended to them. I as the Chairman of the Military Affairs Board (MAB) find this backlog of claims to be a tremendous issue within the VA. The Health and Welfare Committee, a committee within the MAB, as well as myself have taken on this issue, giving veterans in Miami-Dade County a voice and working with the VA in order to rid the system of this matter. The Military Affairs Board’s mission is to promote, attract and solicit military activities in Miami-Dade County, as well as advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance. The idea is that everything that relates to the past and present service men and women would converge through the MAB and then into the hands of the specific agencies that can find solutions and create opportunities. Of those, 51 percent of workers have no private pension coverage and 34 percent have no savings set aside specifically for retirement. These and other numbers make it easy to appreciate the value of Social Security. Nine out of 10 Americans age 65 and older receive Social Security benefits. And among the unmarried, 46 percent rely on Social Security benefits for 90 percent or more of their income. Retirement benefits are just one of the many benefits Social Security provides. Disabled workers and their dependents account for 19 percent of the total benefits paid, while survivors benefits account for 11 percent. One in four of today’s 20-year olds will become disabled before reaching age 67, and the majority of these workers have no long-term disability insurance besides their Social Security coverage. Posiblemente, es la planificación de su jubilación el primer batazo que necesita asestar, ya que los próximos dos lanzamientos serán los beneficios por incapacidad y los beneficios para sobrevivientes. El predecir el futuro es tan difícil como el intentar elegir el equipo que ganará la Serie Mundial el primer día de la temporada. La temporada de beisbol es un ritual anual del verano y sus fanáticos lo conocen por números. El récord de Cal Ripken de participación en 2,632 partidos por consecutivos. La racha de Joe DiMaggio bateando en 56 partidos en los que tuvo por lo menos llego a primera base. Estas son solo unas de las miles y miles de historias que las estadísticas nos cuentan. Si se las mencionas a un fanático del beisbol, de seguro que le contará de historias y memorias inolvidables. En el Seguro Social, nosotros también contamos historias usando números. El primer pago global que hiciera el Seguro Social fue de 17 centavos al señor Ernest Ackerman en el 1937. El primer pago de beneficios mensuales por la cantidad de $22.54 se le envió a la señora Ida May Fuller en enero de 1940. En el año en curso, cerca de 58 millones de personas recibirán un total de $821 mil millones en beneficios de Seguro Social. La cantidad promedio de beneficios mensuales por jubilación es de $1,262 en el 2013. Alrededor de unos 161 millones de trabajadores en los Estados Unidos pagan impuestos de Seguro Social — esto quiere decir el 94 % de la fuerza laboral. De estos, el 51 % de los trabajadores no tienen ningún tipo de pensión privada y 34 % no tiene ahorros específicamente apartados para cuando se jubilen. Al mirar a estas estadísticas y otras más, es fácil apreciar el valor de los beneficios de Seguro Social. Nueve de cada 10 personas mayores de 65 años de edad en los Estados Unidos reciben los beneficios de Seguro Social. Entre las personas solteras, el 46 por ciento depende de los beneficios de Seguro Social para cubrir 90 por ciento de sus ingresos. Los beneficios por jubilación son solo un ejemplo de los beneficios que los impuestos de Seguro Social proveen. Los trabajadores incapacitados y sus dependientes cuentan por 19 por cientos de todos los beneficios que se pagan, mientras que los beneficios para sobrevivientes cuentan por 11 por ciento de todos los beneficios.
