o have to evacuate your residence during an emergency is stressing enough, even more if the person evacuating is one with special needs because they require extra assistance. For this reason, Miami Dade County offers an Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program. Representatives from the Department of Emergency Management of Miami Dade explained that the Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program is designed to help people with special needs that live in their homes and need help during evacuation situations. They made it clear that the eligible applicants must have a medical condition that requires a specialized treatment that will not be available at the regular Evacuation Centers during an emergency. An example of approved applicants to this program are those residents that require special transportation and/or that do not have the transportation means, or those whose medical condition does not allow them to evacuate on their own. Residents with disabilities, those that require specialized nursing services, assistance on a daily basis or medical equipment that requires electricity are the ones that must register in the EEAP. It is important to clarify that residents of an Assisted Living Facility or Senior Residences do not qualify to apply for the EEAP, the reason is because these facilities have the obligation to create their own emergency plans to protect their residents. Once the person is registered with the EEAP, they can use the services for any emergency that requires an evacuation, such as a hurricane, tornados, flooding, chemical or hazardous material releases (as examples we can say an industrial accident or a terrorist act), wildfires, widespread power outages, radiation releases, etc. The program offers specialized transportation, safe haven, medical monitoring and wellness checks. Even when the EEAP provides a wide range of assistance and as much as they possibly can, it is important to mention that the Special Needs Evacuation Centers do not offer the same level of care and do not have the same type of equipment that a specialized medical facility has. This type of evacuation center can only offer basic medical assistance. Special beds and cots are provided
in a limited way and for those people that require a higher level of medical attention such as continuous oxygen, life support that might require electricity and that have advanced conditions and needs admission into hospitals that are participating with the program will be granted, these hospitals are also knows as Medical Management Facilities. Another thing that is important to take into consideration is that as in every emergency situation staff is limited, for this reason the representatives of EEPA also recommend that a relative or the person in charge of the care of the special needs resident, accompany this person during its stay at the evacuation center. Another recommendation is that if the person requires a special diet, they should take their dietary supplies in order to guarantee that they can continue with their diet while at the evacuation center. It is also requested that the special needs resident bring a disaster kit that includes blankets and sheets, medicine and personal items such as food, water and medical equipment. All Miami Dade evacuation centers exceed US Disability Law standards (ADA) for emergency shelters and include accessible entrances, service areas, activities and restrooms. These evacuation centers are also equipped with text phones (TTY), boards with screens and printed material in large fonts. In order to make the time that these people will be out of their own homes as comfortable and pleasant as possible, all of these evacuation centers accept service animals. It is important to remember that the evacuation kit in these cases must include the food and other supplies that the pet or service animal requires. To register in this program, the applicant must fill out
the registration form that is available online at: www. miamidade.gob/fire/eeap.asp . The form must be filled out in its entirety and the primary doctor of the person must also complete a portion of the form and sign it. If there is more than one person in your family that requires help during an evacuation, each person must fill out a form. This form must be filled out online or be mailed at Miami Dade Department of Emergency Management, Emergency and Evacuation Assistance Program located at 9300 NW 41st street. The form is available in English, Spanish and Creole. Once your application is processed, the Miami Dade County Emergency Management Department will contact you to provide you with the necessary instructions and they will also contact you every year afterwards in order for you to certify that you still need this program. It is important that the residents understand that if they have not already been registered in the EEAP, it is probable that they do not receive service during an evacuation. Before the arrival of the storm or any other foreseeable emergency, the Miami Dade County Emergency Management Department will establish a time, that will be notified via the local communication outlets, in which they will suspend last minute registrations for special needs residents. If this is the case, you must call 311 at that time. If you require additional information you can call 305468-5900

ccording to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, although during adolescence the relationship between parents and children changes, adults are key for the positive development of teenagers, as they help shape their education, morals, social values and worldview. Despite this unavoidable truth, in these times of hyperconnectivity, many parents are not certain about how to approach their teenage children, and how to build a healthy relationship with them through good communication. This is particularly challenging with teenagers because in this period of life they begin adopting behaviors such as locking themselves in their rooms, becoming too private about their lives, and spending too much time on their cell phones. However, although understanding the behavior of adolescents is quite a challenge for many, it is possible to establish a healthy relationship with them with a large dose of patience, tolerance, and knowledge.

UNDERSTANDING THE TEENAGE MIND
12
For Christina Balinotti, creator of ‘Universidad de la Familia Ahora Sí’, doctor of psychology and an expert in family issues, the first thing that we need to know is that according to the most recent studies in neuroscience, adolescence ends at 30 years old and not at 19 or 20 as previously thought. Patricia A. Ares-Romero, doctor in psychiatry and neurology, and Medical Director of Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital agree in part with this statement, as she believes the adolescent’s brain does not reach maturity until 25 years of age. “Before that age, the brain is immature in the prefrontal cortex area, which is in charge of controlling feelings. You could say the adolescent is kidnapped by his or her emotions due to not having that area fully developed”, explains Dr. Balinotti. This biological fact makes this stage of life very confusing for those who are living it. “There is a feeling of great discomfort in emotions and only pleasure and instant gratification works,” says Balinotti. However, it should be clarified that although this brings
difficulties, the adolescent must be held responsible for his or her actions. “It takes a while learning to control emotions and adults role is to set boundaries to help teens make better choices,” says Dr. Ares-Romero.
LOVING DISCIPLINE
Parents should start building a relationship with their children long before adolescence arrives or in the primary stage between 12 and 14 years of age. However, it is never too late to strengthen the bond and change the dynamics within the family. According to Dr. Ares-Romero, to start walking towards that direction, parents must first define some clear and consistent rules at home that can be implemented at any given time even if children are not used to having rules. “You have to explain what is expected of them, and also set consequences along with them,” says the doctor. Setting boundaries regarding technology use is especially important today, as it is a way to protect them from school bullying that no longer ends when kids arrive at home but can be extended through a screen. Although kids today communicate mainly by digital means, each family must lay down a few rules on this matter so that technology doesn’t become the main source of communication at home. By doing so, parents prevent behaviors such as texting other family members that are physically present at that moment. According to both experts, communication must be strengthened every day by trying to have an ‘opendoors’ home that means not only being able to talk freely about life’s difficulties, but also limiting behaviors such as shutting the doors. “They need to close their bedroom door to feel like they have some control, but it is important to be aware of
what they do inside of it because when they have Internet access, dangerous situations can happen,” explains Dr. Ares-Romero. In this regard, Dr. Balinotti believes that privacy is something that should only be exercised when you have a mature brain capable of making sound decisions. “We must explain that the bedroom door has to remain open because they are living in mom and dad’s house. We also need to tell them that once they work and make a living, they can close the doors at their own homes,” she says. But according to both, it is not only about setting rules, but about being present and really knowing how they use their time, who are their friends, who are their friend’s parents, and what plans they have for the future, as well as talking to them about dangers and self- responsibility. “Regarding technology usage, we can say something like this: ‘I have noticed you visit YouTube a lot, I would like to know what do you like about it’ and then showing a willingness to understand what they watch,” says Dr. Ares-Romero. Dr. Balinotti summarizes this topic as having the assertiveness and walking next to them with expert authority from childhood to adulthood. “Assertiveness is setting rules without yelling or hitting, and talking without prohibiting becoming a facilitator that helps the child discover who he or she is, wants and dreams of,” says Dr.Balinotti.
CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGUE Since dialogue is one of the most valuable parenting tools, adults need to understand and master the art of conversation in order to have a good relationship with their teenage children, both in primary adolescence (13 or 14 years old) as in the last part of this stage. And how should that dialogue be? For Dr. Balinotti, the key is to practice listening 80 percent and speaking 20 percent. “Lectures are not effective with children and cut off communication. We must promote, instead, daily dialogue with them from an early age that becomes a built-in routine,” she states. Asking too many questions and forcing them to speak also doesn’t work. What does work for parents is to be the ones starting the conversation by talking about themselves or sharing their own personal experiences throughout the day. This will encourage teenagers to do the same in response. Dr. Ares-Romero has a similar opinion. She thinks sharing personal experiences helps children feel closer and more identified with their parents. “With this, they stop

This is something Erika Dambreville-Olaya, mother of a 14-year-old girl, knows very well. Her adolescence was very difficult because she never saw her mother as a support figure. “Where I grew up authority could not be questioned nor could I express myself freely, which is why I never felt that I could talk to my mother if I had a problem,” says Erika. This caused Erika many emotional problems that made her adopt a rebellious behavior, although it was precisely that difficult beginning that has led her to be a good mother for her daughter. “As a mom, I try to remember what I was like at her age, what fears I had, the pressure I endured and how difficult it was for me to get used to high school. I never hit or yell at her because that will only bring me regret. Whenever she is going through hard times, I just try to be there for her,” says Erika. In conclusion, the key to solving the mystery of adolescence is to understand that it is a transitional period where children need their parents support above all things. It is also important to be not only an authority figure but one of relief and protection.
Septiembre/September 15, 2019
seeing them as perfect human beings that have no difficulties,” says Dr.Ares-Romero. Having constructive conversations with children should not be a difficult goal to achieve even when there is little time available, because parents can start a dialogue at any given time. For example, during dinner or, if this is not possible, even when sharing an orange juice, some cookies, or a coffee. Another alternative is to play board games that in addition to helping them disconnect a little from technology can also serve as an excuse to talk. “Dialogue is the glue of the relationship between adults and adolescents because we are giving them quality time,” says Balinotti. Other options include organizing out-of-home activities, establishing family routines, such as having breakfast together every day and involving closest friends in family dynamics. “We can tell our teenager ‘I found out that you have a girlfriend, I would like to meet her, why don’t you bring her home?”, advises Dr. Ares-Romero. But in these approaches, it is very important not to lose motivation even if the adolescent’s response is not encouraging. “Young people are hungry for communication, and although sometimes they seem not to want anything to do with us, the reality is that they need us,” says the expert. It should be noted that increasing communication with teenagers does not imply becoming friends with them as parents must offer themselves as valid identification figures that set boundaries but should never be considered as friends of their children. On the other hand, it is also important to be empathic, avoiding giving statements such as ‘when I was your age, I was already working.’ Instead, parents should try to become the person children speak to when they have a problem. “We do not get anything out of condemning or judging our children for their actions; instead, we should listen to them without making judgments. If we don’t, they will seek advice from other people who may not offer the best one”, says Balinotti.

Where it rains, it can flood!
No House Is Completely SAFE FROM FLOODS More than 20% of the claims due to flooding come from properties outside the high-risk flooding zones. By Edda Pujadas @epujadas

o house is completely safe from possible flooding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) ensures this. Through their national flooding insurance program, they want to raise awareness in the population about the importance to protect your property against this natural phenomenon. For FEMA, flood insurance can make the difference between recovering and being financially devastated. According to the FEMA webpage (https://floodsmart. gov/) just one inch of water in a house can cost more than $25,000 dollars in property damage, for this reason flooding can be a devastating event both emotionally and financially. Flooding is considered the main natural disaster in the United States therefore it is striking that more than 20% of the claims for flood come from properties outside the high-risk flood areas. In 2016 the total amount of losses due to flooding was $3.7 billion, this figure increased to $8.7 billion in 2017. Without flood insurance, the majority of the residents have to pay out of their pocket or request loans to repair and replace their damaged property. Mileny Santana from Soma Insurance explained us that flood insurance in Doral is very important because of the frequency and severity of these type of natural events. Santana comments that, “if you are not in a flood zone, you can purchase flood insurance voluntarily under a program known as preferential program. In this case you do not need an elevation certificate because your house is located in an area known as zone X. The regular flood program is designed for flood zones, for example the AH zone and for these a certificate of elevation is required together with other studies that determine the level of risk that is going to be insured.” Regarding flood zones, Jacqueline Howard from Brightway Insurances in Miami Lakes states that in South Florida the flood zones are AE, AH or X (preferred). “Zones AE and AH are considered high-risk flood zones, but even for zone X whose risk is low we always recommend the flood insurance, because everywhere it rains, there is the possibility of flooding” Howard explains that the prices in the premiums for flood insurance vary depending on the zone in which
they are located, these can start between $300 and $400 annually, depending on the location and other specifications of the property. “Obviously insurance policies for houses located in the X zone are the most economical.” Howard states that what she pays for flood insurance is connected with the amount of flood risk associated to the property. It is convenient to reduce the flood risk because this also helps reducing the cost of the premium. For example, all the communities that are registered in the National Flood Insurance Program, in the Community Rating System, can get discounts in their flood insurance. The Retrofitting Owners Guide from FEMA (https:// www.fema.gov/homeowners-guide-retrofitting) can help you decide the best or correct method to reduce future damages and losses by considering several factors such as the risks in your home, permit requirements, technical limitations and costs. This guide will also help you develop a strategy to protect your house against flooding. It is also important to know that if you elevate your house this can bring you savings in the flood insurance premiums, these can go from 30% to 60% and you can
even get some help with the cost of these elevations through one of the many grant programs that FEMA has. These grants are managed by the states and each state decides which are the projects that they will finance and the amount of the grants. It is equally important that you reduce the risk of damages due to flooding before the storm, for example, raising those critical utilities such as electric panels, switches, plugs, cables, appliances and cooling systems; by cleaning debris from gutters, moving away furniture, valuables and important documents to a safe place and preparing an emergency supplies kit with food, water, medicine and batteries among other important supplies. You must plan and practice an evacuation route in case of flood, you also need a plan for your pets and obviously you need to verify your insurance policies and the scope of their coverage. Take pictures and videos in order to document an inventory of the valuables inside your home and keep an updated registry of all the articles and valuables that are the most important in your property. This is very important at the time to make an insurance claim. In order to start a claim through the National Flood Insurance Program you must notify immediately your agent or insurance company and ask about the possibility of advanced payments, get prepared for the inspection where an insurance adjuster will verify the damages and then work with him to determine what is covered by your insurance policy, discuss about the claim process and determine the next steps. In order to get more information about the claim process of the NFIP, please visit FEMA.gov

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS: What All of Us can do Today By Diana Bello Aristizábal
Septiembre/September 15, 2019

019 has been a concerning year for the planet. According to a report by German reinsurer Munich Re, natural catastrophes have caused more damage in the first half of 2019 than in the same period last year. The material damages worldwide amount to 42 billion dollars. This part of the world is no stranger to that reality. Only with the recent hurricane Dorian, which arrived in the Bahamas as category 5, 45 people died, hundreds more are missing, 70 thousand are lacking housing and the material damages add up to 7 billion dollars according to UN statistics. “We are burning our future,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, last Monday, September 9, during a Human Rights Council session on the responsibility that human beings have in this situation. Yes, literally burning it as it happened with another major disaster: Amazon fires. According to forest ecologist Daniel Nepstad, these were caused by the thousands of farmers who burn their patches of felled forests. “I think this year many landowners felt emboldened to cut down forests and burn without having a permit to do so, (...) because environmental authorities have reduced budgets and there is a greater tendency to ‘look the other way,’ ” said the expert in an interview held by Colombian magazine Semana. But what is the truth behind this daunting picture and what responsibility do we humans have in hurricanes? The answer is as long as it is wide and equally controversial but it can be summed up in two words: Global warming. In this regard it must be clarified that there is no unified consensus as scientists don’t seem to agree on whether global warming, which is heating the oceans 40 percent faster, is increasing the frequency of hurricanes or not. What they do agree on, its that this problem could be increasing their intensity, which brings
devastation, diseases and poverty. We are already facing this locally. According to the Climate Change and Human Health report of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, The U.S. National Climate Assessment (2014 NCA) found that rising temperatures, the resulting increases in the frequency or intensity of some extreme weather events, as well as rising sea levels, and melting snow and ice are already disrupting people’s lives in the U.S. This lead us to think that countries, institutions, legislators and in general the entire social structure
comes to the social responsibility we have in the environment, but she thinks the most important thing is to get actively involved in the defense of habitats such as the Everglades where some companies have conducted drilling and fracking. In addition to the above, in Doral Family Journal we believe that although it is difficult to talk about personal responsibilities in an issue that has seen the hand of large corporations and governments, we can all make small changes to contribute a granite of sand to this problem. Some of them are next.
must join forces to carry out actions that prevent not only climate change, but pollution, deforestation, land degradation, lack of resources and species extinction. “We have to get together with other people in our jobs, schools and neighborhoods to talk about these problems in a realistic way in order to find a living system that is sustainable and not focused on profit,” says the enviromentalist artist Stephanie McMillen. For McMillen, who used to be a cartoonist on climate change, there is no right answer when it
According to María-Camila Calvache, environmental engineer and environmental scientist of Clark University, when disasters like the Amazon fires occur, people tend to blame decision makers. However, for her the change begins with oneself. First, we must start by supporting companies that are eco-friendly and perform clean practices with the planet. “One step that goes in this direction is to buy organic food at supermarkets or from local organic farmers,” says María-Camila. Organic food must be labeled as ‘USDA organic’ to be actually considered as such. Buying this type of food positively impacts health, as it has been proved that chemicals used in regular food are stored in the body causing illnesses in the long-term. On the other hand, there is also a positive impact on the environment, because the pesticides used in crops damage the population of pollinators (bees, wasps, diptera), as well as the water resource, since these substances end up contaminating the groundwater that is connected to lakes. As Stephanie McMillen explains, the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is killing insects. “People are destroying their habitats and leaving them unable to survive. But they are key to the balance of nature and for basic activities as growing food,” she says.
RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION
Information | Información
It is also recommended to buy furniture in companies that have a sustainability certification and do not use Amazon wood. “Many furnitures have a label that says ‘Amazon wood ’. By buying them, we are supporting woodcutting in that area,” explains María-Camila. Instead, when we buy items that have a sustainability certificate, we are supporting reforestation as companies that opt for this seal plant trees in the places where they cut down. Items that offer this warranty are labeled by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Those who are interested in learning more about what to buy to protect forests can go to their website. Another way to contribute is to use cars less frequently and opt, instead, for the bicycle or carpooling. By doing so, we decrease our gasoline consumption and help to produce less greenhouse gases. It is also important to turn off the lights at home when we don’t need them, unplugging and turning off unused electronic devices, and using LED bulbs that help reduce the carbon footprint in the environment as they consume less energy. The LED-like work is also played by trees. For this reason, it is a good idea to plant a tree in the garden. “A single tree has the capacity to absorb
a ton of carbon during the time it is alive,” explains María-Camila. Likewise, we can reuse and recycle some of the things we have at home instead of replacing them. For example, we can give a new purpose to restaurant food containers or to glass jars of sauces and jams. In this same line, we cannot ignore the importance of eliminating plastic of our lives, since the planet has long been suffering the effects of plastic consumption in the oceans and marine species. One final recommendation is to adjust the temperature of the heating and air conditioning devices at home. “I know it is difficult to do this in extreme heat or cold seasons, but lowering or raising the thermostat at least 35º F can make a difference,” says María-Camila.
PRESERVING MARINE LIFE
In addition to being responsible consumers, we have a great responsibility when making use of beaches and oceans. In order to take care of them, the most basic task and that people often forget to do is to collect and throw away in proper garbage cans the waste that comes in and out. Practicing this habit is essential for the environment, because the wind usually drags waste
into the sea, and the plastic from soda and food is polluting the water and killing the marine fauna. A less basic but more effective task could be to join organizations that do beach cleanups or that work towards preserving water resources, protecting the bay or saving marine life in order to volunteer or donate money. Locally, two alternatives are Miami Waterkeepers and South Florida National Parks Trust, among others. If there is a recurrent problem of water pollution, one step to take is to contact local political representatives so that they can raise their voice in favor of the people with environmental agencies that manage and control these kind of issues. The purpose of following this path is to discover the source of the water pollution to determine whether it comes from a corporation or from a leak in a water treatment plant. “A research process should be conducted to know if wastewater treatment plants are being managed correctly,” warns María-Camila. To know how to contact a local representative, one option may be to reach out to environmental conservation organizations that exercise as ‘political voice’ before elected officials in order to promote actions and projects in favor of natural resources and soil. Florida Conservation Voters is one of them.

CONCIENCIA AMBIENTAL: Lo que todos podemos hacer hoy Por Diana Bello Aristizábal
Septiembre/September 15, 2019
E
26

Serving the of Needs of Children with an AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER and their Families A Better Day Therapy Center, a 501c 3 non-profit organization, was born from the desire to help families who are affected by Autism and Related Disabilities access pragmatic and effective Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy. Prior to 2010 in the State of Florida there was no Medicaid or insurance coverage for ABA Therapy. Under Florida Medicaid waiver there was limited coverage which had been slowly cut affecting our patients. We opened the organization to help families access ABA therapy within their available financial constraints. Autism Speaks successfully introduced legislation in Florida in 2008 for implementation beginning 2010. A Federal ruling in 2012 secured ABA therapy for all Florida Medicaid recipients under the age of 21. Currently all 50 US states have legislation mandating insurance coverage for individuals with Autism to cover ABA therapy. However, this coverage is still limited and at times come with high deductibles and co-payments or co-insurance. This is where they can help. A Better Day Therapy Center has recently opened a state-of-the-art therapy center in the City of Doral. This center primarily provide ABA therapy with its affiliate company New Way Day
Services. During the summer, A Better Day Therapy Center assisted many families offset summer camp costs by making the center available for their children to come and receive therapy with the summer camp feel. The center is open on days in which schools are closed. A Better Day Therapy Center provide activities during the day which promote social skills for all at the center no matter the age. The center is also designed as a shared therapy space for other providers. The shared therapy space is essential to continuity of care for our patients and to maintain the center’s sustainability. There are spaces which can be
leased at reasonable costs. For more information, or if you would like to help, please call at 305-597-3861; email to info@ abetterdaytherapycenter.org A Better Day Therapy Center is located 9600 NW 25th Street, Suite 1, Doral, FL 33172.

Principalmente Brinda terapia ABA con su empresa afiliada New Way Day Services.
.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is revising the current naturalization test with improvements to ensure it continues to serve as an accurate measure of a naturalization applicant’s civics knowledge and that it reflects best practices in adult education assessments. The goal is to create a meaningful, uniform, and efficient test that will assess applicants’ knowledge and understanding of U.S. history, government and values. This spring, the former USCIS director signed the Revision of the Naturalization Civics Test Memorandum (PDF, 202 KB). This memorandum announces the revision of the naturalization test and formalizes a decennial revision schedule of the naturalization test based on adult education best practices. “Granting U. S. citizenship is the highest honor our nation bestows,” said USCIS Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli. “Updating, maintaining, and improving a test that is current and relevant is our responsibility as an agency in order to help potential new citizens fully understand the meaning of U.S. citizenship and the values that unite all Americans.” In December 2018, USCIS formed a naturalization test revision working group with members from across the agency. The working group has been reviewing and updating the naturalization test questions. The working group will also assess potential changes to the speaking portion of the test. USCIS is soliciting the input of experts in the field of adult education to ensure that this process is fair and transparent. After careful analysis of the pilot, and thorough officer training, USCIS will set an implementation date in December 2020 or early 2021. Section 312 of the Immigration and Nationality Act outlines the English and civics requirements for naturalization. By law, candidates for naturalization must have “… an understanding of the English language, including an ability to read, write, and speak words in ordinary usage in the English language…” and “…knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history, and of the principles and form of government, of the United States...” This test revision will comply with all statutory and regulatory requirements, and USCIS will pilot it this fall. In Fiscal Year 2018, USCIS naturalized nearly 757,000 people, a five-year high in new oaths of citizenship. The naturalization test revision is a key part of preparing legal immigrants to fully exercise their rights and meet their responsibilities. For more information, please visit uscis.gov
E
On Wheels® (HHOW), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by Hyundai and its U.S. dealers, announced $300,000 Hyundai Hope Scholar Grant to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to continue its long-standing fight against pediatric cancer. HHOW has committed $13.2 million to support 52 new doctor-researchers in their research for better treatment options and to improve care for children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. The Hyundai Scholar Hope officially presented the grant to Dr. Warren Alperstein at Sylvester on Tuesday, September 10th, 2019. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and HHOW has launched its campaign theme for 2019, “Every Handprint Tells A Story”. Every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer impacting 15,000 new, young lives each year. Childhood cancer remains the leading disease-related cause of death among children. There are many handprints in the fight to find a cure. HHOW remains one of the largest funders
to support medical institutions and efforts to develop pediatric cancer research in the nation. This year will reach $160 million in total lifetime funding since 1998 towards finding a cure. With this latest grant, Sylvester has received $700,000 in total grants since 2010 from HHOW. “We are honored to be the recipient of the 2019 Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant which is funding the future of precision medicine in pediatric patients. Metastatic sarcoma can be a difficult disease to treat. The ability to match a patient’s specific tumor to the treatment option that demonstrates the greatest response in real time has the potential to change his or her life,” explained Warren Alperstein, M.D., the principal investigator for the study at Sylvester. “For 21 years, Hyundai and its dealers have partnered with medical doctor research teams from the top hospitals and institutions from around the country in a quest to finally beat this disease,” says Scott Fink, Board Chair and Hyundai dealer owner, Hyundai of New Port Richey. “Hyundai’s contributions have helped to significantly improve childhood cancer cure rates to more than 80
percent. This is why every minute is precious and every second matters in the fight against pediatric cancer.” During the event, young patients being treated at Alex’s Place, Sylvester’s pediatric outpatient facility for children with cancer and blood diseases, dipped their hands in colorful paint and placed their handprints on a white 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. Their colorful handprints on the official Hope Vehicle represent their individual and collective journeys, hopes, and dreams. Social Security announces first potential group of participants for NEW ELECTRONIC SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER verification service
T
he Social Security Administration today announced the first potential group of selected participants for its new electronic Consent Based Social Security Number (SSN) Verification (eCBSV) service. The agency will roll out the service to these users in June 2020, and plans on expanding the number of users within approximately six months of the initial rollout. “Our new electronic SSN verification service will help to reduce synthetic identity fraud by comparing data provided electronically by approved participants with the agency’s records,” said Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security. “This will provide fast, secure, and more efficient SSN verifications for the financial services industry and customers using their services.” Social Security is creating eCBSV, a fee-based electronic SSN verification service, to allow select financial institutions and service providers, called “permitted entities” and including subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, subcontractors, or assignees of a financial institution, to verify if a person’s SSN, name, and date of birth combination matches Social Security
Service to Begin in 2020 records. Social Security needs the person’s written consent and will accept an electronic signature in order to disclose the SSN verification to the permitted entity. eCBSV returns a match verification of “Yes” or “No.” eCBSV does not verify a person’s identity. The 10 participants selected for the initial rollout are: • American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc. • Capital One Services, LLC • Computer Information Development, LLC • Discover Financial Services • Early Warning Services, LLC • Experian Information Solutions, Inc. • ID Analytics, LLC • Navy Federal Credit Union • SentiLink Corp.
• Synchrony Financial Each of the service providers selected can serve up to 20 permitted entities, with the potential of 124 permitted entities participating in the initial rollout. This announcement does not affect the existing Consent Based SSN Verification service. For more information, see www.socialsecurity.gov/ dataexchange/eCBSV/.

• Computer Information Development, LLC • Discover Financial Services • Early Warning Services, LLC • Experian Information Solutions, Inc. • ID Analytics, LLC • Navy Federal Credit Union • SentiLink Corp.
