Doral is Named Tree City USA for Ninth Consecutive Year

or the ninth consecutive year, the City of Doral has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Doral is among the 15 cities, towns and villages in Miami-Dade County that were recognized. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Doral achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s core standards, including the annual observance and proclamation for Arbor Day. The City commemorated Arbor Day this year on January 20th, when the City donated a tree to eight Doral elementary schools. Councilmembers Claudia Mariaca visited Shelton Academy and Dr. Rolando Espinosa while Christi Fraga made the rounds of Downtown Doral Charter and Doral Academy, meeting with students and assisting in the planting of an orange geiger tree. “Trees are not just ornamental, they play a vital role in keeping our air clean and temperatures down,” said Councilwoman Fraga. “If you only see a tree, you’re not seeing the whole picture,” explained Councilwoman Mariaca. “These are individual ecosystems that support insects, birds and small reptiles,” she added. Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, who was out of town that Friday, batted clean up on Friday, February 3rd by visiting four schools in a single day. “I think it’s great that students care about our environment and the cleanliness of our city,” said the mayor, “they set the example for their families.” Students planted the trees at their respective schools, and will continue to care for them in support of the environment and acknowledgment of the endless benefits of trees. The City continues spreading the importance of trees to its citizens with events like this, and through other initiatives, aligning with the Tree City USA program. These programs help establish a frame work enhancing the management of planting and tree care; educating about the importance of sustainable tree management and engaging organizations in advancing urban forestry. It also showcases the pride residents feel about where they live and work.

or noveno año consecutivo, la Ciudad de Doral ha sido nombrada como Tree City USA por la Fundación “Arbor Day’ en honor de su compromiso con la gestión eficaz de los bosques urbanos. Doral está entre las 15 ciudades en el condado de Miami-Dade que fueron reconocidas. El programa Tree City USA es patrocinado por Arbor Day Foundation, en colaboración con el Servicio Forestal de los Estados Unidos y la Asociación Nacional de Silvicultores del Estado. Doral logró el reconocimiento de Tree City USA al cumplir con los estándares básicos del programa, incluyendo la observancia anual y la proclamación para el Día del Árbol. La Ciudad conmemoró el Día del Árbol, el pasado 20 de enero, cuando la Ciudad donó un árbol a ocho escuelas primarias de Doral. El alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez, quién estaba fuera de la ciudad ese viernes, visitó 4 escuelas el pasado viernes 3 de febrero. “Creo que es estupendo que los estudiantes se preocupen por nuestro medio ambiente y la limpieza de nuestra ciudad”, dijo el alcalde. “Están dando el ejemplo a sus familias”. Los estudiantes plantaron los árboles en sus respectivas escuelas y se comprometieron a cuidar de ellos en apoyo al medio ambiente y en reconocimiento a los infinitos beneficios de los árboles. La Ciudad continúa difundiendo la importancia de los árboles para sus ciudadanos con eventos como este, y a través de otras iniciativas, alineándose con el programa Tree City USA. Estos programas ayudan a establecer un marco de trabajo que mejora la gestión de la plantación y el cuidado de los árboles; Educan sobre la importancia de la gestión sostenible de los árboles y comprometen a las organizaciones en el avance de la silvicultura urbana. También muestra el orgullo que los residentes sienten por el lugar dónde viven y trabajan.

“I’m a Legal Immigrant”

Immigration Changes cause uncertainty in Doral According to statistics, Miami Dade County, to which the City of Doral belongs, has one of the highest percentages of immigrants in the country. Edda Pujadas, @epujadas

ear, uncertainty, doubt, and anguish are some of the words that describe today the feelings of the immigrants in the United States, independently of their immigration status they feel threatened after the new policies that can be implemented by the Presidency. The residents of Doral, the majority of which are from Hispanic origin, are not strangers to this feeling, especially when the city belongs to Miami Dade County, county for which its Mayor Carlos Gimenez ordered to have illegal immigrants detained in order to comply with the request of President Donald Trump, who threatened to withdraw federal funds from the cities that do not comply with his immigration executive order. Gimenez seemed to have retracted when he indicated that his position only ratifies the fact that Miami has never been a Sanctuary City and when he manifested that the county’s police department remains at the service of its residents regardless of their immigration status. He added that the Miami Dade Police is not an immigration agency and for that reason the residents should not fear any persecution of undocumented hunt. Nevertheless, these declarations were not enough to diminish the anguish of the residents of our county, because the rumors of raids, persecution of undocumented people, difficulties while coming back to the United States in spite of visas and green cards, are realities that are happening and recurring, bringing more anguish and desperation to those that even when they were not born here, they are legal residents. A short survey conducted among the residents of Doral showed us that this uncertainty is also present in our city, here 79.5% of the residents are from Hispanic origin. “It does not matter if you are a legal immigrant or if you are undocumented, you also feel threatened and under the risk of loosing everything that you have built in this country.”

For a lot of the residents it is important to clarify that the fact that they are immigrants does not mean that they are illegal or undocumented. “It is true that in the United States there are a lot of people that do not have an immigration status that is legally recognized, because they had the need to migrate from their own countries for reasons of social, political or economic survival, but this does not mean that they can be called illegal or treated as criminals.” There are also a lot that even when they are immigrants, they show support to these possible immigration changes. They consider that even when it is true that there is injustice in the way in which some legal residents are treated in the United States, it is also an issue of National Security to better control the type of people that are coming into the country. At a National level, the support for Sanctuary Cities, this is the ones that are committed to protecting their undocumented residents from a possible deportation, seems evident. A recent survey from the Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative showed that 52% of the interviewed people are against the federal cuts to sanctuary cities versus 36% that are in favor. The majority of the residents in the State of Florida reject the cut of federal funds to Sanctuary Cities and is against the plans of the Department of Justice to act against them, as they believe that local governments should serve all their residents without minding their immigration status. And this is exactly what a lot of the residents of Doral think, they state that the police officers of Doral should not turn into immigration officials, this will only jeopardize the trust between police and residents in the cities and this will turn our cities in less safe places.

The Doral Police is also understanding of this national situation, for this reason Captain Carlos Arango states that the residents of our city can feel safe, because asking about immigration status is not one of the mandates of their organization.

“The Doral Police Department is fully committed to the procedural justice, and the four pillars of this procedural justice are justice, fairness, voice and transparency. We always practice this through our community policing, this is focus in initiatives directed to problem solving, the building of relationships with the residents and businesses and the organizational transformation. This is our true mission.” Captain Arango added that the Doral Police treats and will treat all residents and visitors to the city with the respect and dignity that each person deserves without regards to their immigration status. “In Doral everyone will receive the same level of service and protection offered by our officers and each person that interacts with our police officers in Doral can have the certainty and trust that we act based in the Constitution and in State laws.” “For example,” explained Captain Arango, “if a person in Doral is cited for a traffic infraction or arrested, it will be because his/her actions were contrary to the state laws and not because of their immigration status, either real or perceived. Residents in our city can continue handling their daily activities with the confidence that their immigration status will not be questioned.” As the speaker of the Doral Police Department, Captain Arango advises all residents of Doral to obey the law, this is what really matters and also to enjoy all the benefits that our city offers. He added that his recommendation for all the people that do not have a defined immigration status is to search the advice of a professional in this area. When we refer to the legal part, attorney Michelle G. Sanchez, partner at the firm Sanchez Vadillo LLP, states that as a prevention, the best recommendation now to all the people living in the United States and that do not have the need to get out, is, not to do leave the country, to avoid unnecessary risks. “Speaking about immigration, we are in a very confusing moment, this can complicate the reentry to the country to all non-citizens. Right now we do not know what is going to happen, we expect radical changes in immigration, but as of now there are still no definitive decisions,” stated attorney Sanchez. Sanchez uses as an example the situation for people of Muslim countries, even when the executive order of President Donald Trump was denied by three federal

judges, he stated that he will appeal the decision. “This is an ambiguous and unstable situation, it generates confusion to the immigration personnel at the airports in the United States.” Another recommendation of attorney Sanchez, is to keep calm, because especially in social media there is a lot of wrong information without any legal foundation. “The right thing to do if you have questions about your immigration status, legal risks and your rights, is to contact an attorney specialized in this area.” With the intention to clear any doubts about immigration, among the residents of Doral, the Doral Police Department and the legal firm Sanchez

Vadillo LLP have initiated community workshops geared towards the discussion of immigration issues. “Mayor Bermudez intention when he organized these workshops is to try to help the residents get more clarity and peace of mind regarding this subject,” commented Captain Arango. The first of these workshops took place on Thursday, February 16th, 2107 at Palms of Doral, as a way to provide peace of mind to the community in the immigration area, the attendees were reminded that the Doral Police Department is not an enemy and works to make sure that Doral continues to be the safe community where people can live, work, learn and play, without regards of their immigration status. Some of the subjects that were discussed in these workshops were American Laws and customs in the United States, traffic related laws, what to do if a police officer stops you? Important issues about immigration, vision and goals of the Doral Police Department and codes and ordinances of the City of Doral. Any person that wants to participate in these workshops can do it without regard of their immigration status. Dates and times of the next workshops will be announced in the next days.

iedo, incertidumbre, dudas y angustia quizás sean algunas de las palabras que puedan definir el sentimiento que padecen hoy en día los inmigrantes que viven en Estados Unidos, pues más allá de su estatus migratorio actual se sienten amenazados antes las nuevas políticas que puedan implementarse desde la presidencia. Los residentes de Doral, en su gran mayoría de origen hispano, no escapan de este sentimiento, más aún cuando la ciudad forma parte del condado de Miami-Dade, en la que su alcalde, Carlos Giménez, ordenó detener a los inmigrantes indocumentados para dar cumplimiento a lo solicitado por el presidente Donald Trump, quien había amenazado con retirar los fondos federales a las ciudades que no acaten su decreto sobre inmigración. Giménez pareció retractarse al señalar que su postura solo ratifica que Miami nunca ha sido una ciudad santuario y manifestar que el Departamento de Policía del Condado continua al servicio de sus residentes sin importar su estatus migratorio. Añadió que Policía de Miami-Dade no es una agencia de inmigración y que, por lo tanto, los residentes no deben temer ninguna persecución o cacería de indocumentados. Sin embargo, estas declaraciones no lograron disipar la angustia de quienes viven en nuestro condado, pues los rumores de redadas, persecuciones a personas indocumentadas y dificultades para ingresar a Estados Unidos, a pesar de tener visas o tarjetas de residencias permanentes, son realidades que no dejan de repetirse, trayendo más angustia y desesperación a quienes, a pesar de no haber nacido en este país, lo habitan legalmente. Una breve encuesta realizada entre los habitantes de Doral, nos reveló que esta incertidumbre también acosa a quienes habitan nuestra ciudad, en la que 79.5% de los residentes son de origen hispano. “No importa si eres inmigrante legal o si estas indocumentado, igualmente, te sientes amenazado y con el riesgo de perder lo que has construido en este país”. Para muchos, es importante aclarar que ser inmigrante no es ser ilegal. “Ciertamente, en Estados Unidos hay muchas personas que no tienen un estatus migratorio reconocido legalmente, pues han tenido que emigrar de sus países de origen por razones

de sobrevivencia social, política o económica, pero esto no significa que puedan ser llamados ilegales o tratados como delincuentes”. Hay muchos otros que, a pesar de ser inmigrantes, le muestran su respaldo a estos posibles cambios migratorios, al considerar que si bien es cierto que se comenten algunas injusticias contra personas que residen legalmente en Estados Unidos, es un asunto de seguridad nacional depurar la entrada del tipo de personas que ingresan a la nación. A nivel nacional, el apoyo a las llamadas ciudades santuario, es decir las que están comprometidas a proteger a sus residentes indocumentados de una posible deportación, parece ser evidente, pues una encuesta de la Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative arrojó que un 52% de los entrevistados se opone a los recortes federales a las ciudades que ofrecen refugio a los indocumentados, frente a un 36% que se muestra favorable. Por su parte, la mayoría de los residentes en el estado de Florida rechaza un recorte de fondos federales a las ciudades santuario y se muestra contraria a que el Departamento de Justicia actúe contra ellas, pues consideran que los gobiernos locales deben servir a todos los individuos sin importar su estatus migratorio. Y es justamente esto lo que consideran muchos de los habitantes de Doral, al señalar que los oficiales de la policía local no deben convertirse en agentes de inmigración, pues esto sólo perjudica la confianza entre la policía y los residentes de las ciudades, lo que lleva a que nuestras comunidades sean menos seguras.

La Policía de Doral no se muestra ajena a esta realidad nacional, por lo que el

Capitán Carlos Arango señala que los residentes de nuestra ciudad pueden sentirse completamente seguros, pues dentro de las funciones de este organismo de seguridad no está preguntarle a la gente acerca de su estatus migratorio. “El Departamento de Policía de Doral está fervientemente comprometido con la justicia procesal y los cuatro pilares de la justicia procesal son la justicia, la imparcialidad, la voz y la transparencia, los cuales ponemos en práctica a través de nuestro trabajo comunitario que se centra en las iniciativas dirigidas a la resolución de problemas, la construcción de relaciones con los residentes y las empresas y la transformación organizacional. Esa es nuestra verdadera misión”. El capitán Arango agregó que la Policía de Doral trata y tratará a todos los residentes o visitantes de la ciudad con el respeto y la dignidad que cada persona merece sin importar su estado migratorio. “En Doral, todos recibirán el mismo nivel de servicio y protección ofrecido por nuestros agentes y por su parte, cada persona que interactúa con los oficiales de la Policía de Doral pueden tener la seguridad y confianza de que actuamos basados en la Constitución y en las leyes estatales”. “Por ejemplo”, explicó el capitán Arango, “si una persona en Doral es citada por una infracción de tráfico o arrestada, será porque sus acciones fueron contrarias a las leyes estatales y no debido a su estatus migratorio real o percibido. Las personas que viven en nuestra ciudad pueden realizar sus actividades diarias confiando en que su situación migratoria no será cuestionada”. Como vocero del Departamento de la Policía de Doral, el capitán Arango aconsejó a todas las personas que viven en Doral a obedecer la ley, que es lo verdaderamente importante y a la vez, disfrutar de todos los beneficios que ofrece esta ciudad a sus residentes.

La abogada Michelle Gonzalez Agregó que lo más recomendable para las personas que no tengan un estatus migratorio definido es que se asesoren con un profesional en esta área. Al referirnos a la parte legal, la abogada Michelle G. Sánchez, socia de la firma Sanchez Vadillo LLP,

manifiesta que, preventivamente, lo más aconsejable es que las personas que vivan en Estados Unidos y no tengan la necesidad imperiosa de salir, no lo hagan para evitar riesgos innecesarios. “Estamos en un momento muy confuso a nivel migratorio, lo que puede dificultar el re-ingreso de las personas no-ciudadanas a Estados Unidos. La verdad es que, en estos momentos, no sabemos que va pasar y aunque al parecer, se esperan cambios radicales en materia de inmigración, hasta el momento no hay decisiones definitivas”, señaló la abogada Sánchez. Sánchez citó como ejemplo, la situación de las personas de países musulmanes, pues a pesar de que la orden del presidente Donald Trump fue negada por tres jueces federales, él manifestó que apelará a la decisión. “Esta es una situación ambigua e inestable que, lógicamente, genera confusiones al personal de inmigración que está en los aeropuertos de Estados Unidos”. Otra de las recomendaciones de la abogada Sánchez, es mantener la calma, pues, especialmente por las redes sociales, circula mucha información tergiversada que no tiene ningún fundamento legal. “Lo más oportuno, si tienen dudas sobre su condición migratoria, sus riesgos legales y sus derechos es que contacten un abogado especializado en esa área. Precisamente con la intención de disipar las dudas

de los residentes de Doral en materia migratoria, la Policía de Doral y la firma de abogados Sanchez Vadillo LLP han iniciado un ciclo de charlas dirigidas a la comunidad para discutir sobre temas migratorios. “La intención del alcalde Bermúdez al ordenar la realización de estas charlas, es tratar de calmar a la población en lo que se refiere a este tema”, comentó el capitán Arango. El primero de estos foros de discusión comunitaria se realizó el pasado jueves 16 de febrero del 2017 en la comunidad “Palms of Doral” como un medio para tranquilizar a la comunidad en el aspecto migratorio, al recordarle a los asistentes que el Departamento de Policía de Doral no es su enemigo y funciona para asegurar que Doral siga siendo una comunidad segura donde la gente pueda vivir, trabajar, aprender y jugar, sin cuestionar su estatus migratorio. Algunos de los temas tratados en estas charlas son leyes de aduanas de Estados Unidos, leyes de tráfico, ¿qué hacer si un oficial lo detiene?, ideas importantes sobre inmigración, visión y metas de la Policía de Doral y códigos y ordenanzas de Doral. Cualquier persona que desee participar en estas charlas puede hacerlo sin importar su condición migratoria. Interview with Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez:

“We expect everybody to follow the rules”

t has been two months since Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez was sworn-in. In that time he has been evaluating the current state of the City to define the priorities for the rest of the year. Respect and harmony have dominated the five Council Meetings he has chaired and decision-making votes are taken in an efficient matter, leading to short and effective meetings. “One of the things as a chair I pointed out is that, even if we have differences of opinion, we are going do it in a respectful way, in a timely way, respect the time of the residents, the staff and the rest of the council, make decisions and move forward. I think that it was very important that everybody understand in government we have effective, efficient and respectful meetings. I hope that the way the meetings take place right now stays that way.” “It does not mean we are not going to have differences of opinion, some can vote yes, some can vote no, but it can be done in a way it does not become a drama. We can disagree with each other in a respectful matter. I think the council has not only understood that but have been very supportive, and you can see everyone has expressed their opinions openly, in an efficient and respectful manner and that is the way we should keep on focusing on doing.” These first months have set the tone for what residents expected when deciding for a change in the leadership of the city: to rescue the values of efficiency and respect to the rules.

FIRST PRIORITY: PROJECT COMPLETION

Bermudez explains that finishing the projects currently delayed, the Doral Legacy Park and the new Police Station, is going to be a main focus this year. “The most important thing is we have to finish the projects that are delayed, beginning with Doral Legacy Park. I am trying to get from the Manager a specific time period when we can open that park, as it will give so many more resources for all of our community programs. The police station in 102th avenue is also delayed, we need to finish that. We have to make sure they are on budget but also on time”. The delays have been caused by difficulties of the builders with some contractors explains Bermudez: “I think it is a matter of construction being not timely and I do know that in the case of the park the builder is already paying what is called liquidating damages, a daily fee for not having the project finished on time. The most important thing is finish those projects, and start the new things with the new concept of making sure that everything is done on budget and on time.”

LAW ENFORCEMENT: PROMISE DELIVERED

The increase of law enforcement officials in the streets,

tough on offenders, to improve the quality of life, was one of the issues Bermudez addressed on his campaign. “I think the residents have noticed it, our police department needs to be more present, making sure rules are followed. I hope residents have seen more police back on the streets doing their jobs, making sure people follow the rules. Not only is important to have order in the community, but you can have very bad accidents where somebody takes a red light, and takes the lives of somebody else.” “We need to bring back the order in the community; our goal is to bring back the culture of community we had in Doral. We are working on it; we are moving in the right direction, but it is going to take time.” Bermudez considers that active participation and support by residents are going to be the key to restore the values of respect to rules and sense of community. “This can’t be done without the residents supporting us, absolutely, unequivocally.” “Besides the new boards that are going to be appointed, beginning with our children, we need the community to feel part of the city, to keep places clean, make sure to do things the right way, to respect the rules. That when there is a new resident, we remind them: ‘let’s all be part of the solution.’

IMMIGRATION AND MONEY LAUNDERING ISSUES

Doral has grown basically due to the constant influx of immigrants. Therefore the measures the federal government takes regarding immigration have an important impact on the residents. Bermudez explained that it is not the job of Doral Police

to verify immigrations status. That is a responsibility of County police when they take over the cases. “We are not here to do the job for the federal government; we are here to do the job for the safety and security of our community. To us it makes no difference, if you are doing something wrong, whether you are here legally or illegally, we are not going to ask you; we are just here to protect our community.” On the other hand, it is important that residents understand that if they need help first responders and police exist to provide assistance, regardless of the immigration status. “If someone has an issue and needs help we never ask if you are legally or illegally in our city, we just help” said Bermudez. “The issue that is being discussed at the national level and the views of the MiamiDade County and the Jail system is between the county and the federal government. We expect that everybody follow the rules.” However, a crime where Doral Police has an important preventive job is Money Laundering. Detectives of the City of Doral Police Department General Investigation Unit work along with the FBI Money Laundering/Narcotics Task Force to locate and catch criminals involved on those situations. An investigation of The Miami Herald in 2015 determined that at least 83 businesses in Doral were involved in money laundering. USA Today is running a story on the issue and they interviewed Bermudez about it. “It is going to be mentioned in a national story, because unfortunately a lot of businesses in Doral has been somewhere in that list for different reasons.” The City will continue “to work with the Money laundering Task force to make sure everybody follows the rules for living here. That is our role as a community, to make sure we follow directions of the federal government and we will continue to make sure that people are doing the right thing.” Although the Code in Doral does not contemplate money origin verification procedures when processing business permits in the city, being part of the Task Force makes easier to detect irregularities to send the information to the federal offices in charge; “the power for the verification where money comes from is in charge of the Federal Bureau of investigation, but I do thing we are going to be very active in it and when something happens in our city we are going to be able to provide the information timely and be more active on that” said Bermudez. Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez looks forward to “seeing a lot of good things happen” in Doral to recover the values of respect and community. It is in the hands of the residents to commit on their side to following the rules in order to contribute to the effective, efficient and orderly operation of this City they call home.

an pasado dos meses desde que el Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez fue juramentado. Durante ese tiempo ha estado evaluando el estado actual de la Ciudad para definir las prioridades para el resto del año. La armonía y el respeto han dominado las cinco Reuniones del Concejo que Bermúdez lidera; en esas reuniones los votos y discusiones se han realizado de manera eficiente y efectiva, reduciendo su duración. “Como líder de la reunión he señalado que, aun cuando haya diferencias de opinión, el trabajo hay que realizarlo con respeto, tomando en cuenta el tiempo; respetando el tiempo de los residentes, el personal y el resto del concejo, para tomar decisiones y seguir adelante. Pienso que es muy importante que todo el mundo sepa que el gobierno local lleva a cabo reuniones efectivas, eficientes y respetuosas,” “No significa que no habrá diferencias de opinión. Unos votarán que sí, otros que no, pero todo puede hacerse sin convertirse en drama. Podemos estar en desacuerdo, pero mantener el respeto. PRIMERA PRIORIDAD: COMPLETAR PROYECTOS

Bermúdez explica que el foco principal será completar proyectos que están atrasados, como es el Doral Legacy Park y la nueva estación de policía. “Lo más importante es que terminemos los proyectos. Estoy esperando de parte de City Manager los cronogramas específicos para lograr la apertura del parque, que tendrá muchos recursos para los programas de la comunidad. La estación de policía en la avenida 102 también se ha atrasado y tenemos que terminarlo. ” Las demoras han sido causadas por algunos contratistas, explicó, quienes no han cumplido con sus compromisos. “Lamentablemente la construcción no ha estado a tiempo y sabemos que en el caso del parque, el constructor ya está pagando cuota diaria de daños y perjuicios por no haber concluido la obra a tiempo.” “Lo importante es completar estos proyectos para iniciar otros nuevos con el concepto de asegurar que todo se ejecute dentro del presupuesto y el tiempo estimado.”

PRESENCIA POLICIAL: PROMESA CUMPLIDA

Uno de los asuntos discutidos por Bermúdez en su campaña fue la presencia policial. Actualmente “hay incremento de policía en las calles que actúan enérgicamente con los infractores; Esto mejora la calidad de vida.”

“Pienso que los residentes se habrán dado cuenta que en la medida que el departamento de policía hace acto de presencia las personas siguen las reglas. Espero que puedan ver con frecuencia a los policías en las calles haciendo su trabajo, asegurándose que las personas sigan las reglas. No solamente es importante tener orden en la comunidad sino prevenir graves accidentes que pueden poner en riesgo la vida de otros transeúntes.” “Necesitamos reordenar la comunidad; Nuestro objetivo es brindar la cultura de comunidad que teníamos en Doral. Estamos trabajando en eso, moviéndonos en la dirección correcta, pero aun tomará un tiempo.” Bermúdez considera que la participación activa y el apoyo de los residentes serán la clave para restaurar los valores de respeto a las reglas y sentido comunitario. “No podemos hacerlo sin el apoyo inequívoco y absoluto de los residentes.” “Las nuevas juntas comunitarias van a ser designadas pronto. Debemos comenzar a educar desde los niños; necesitamos que la comunidad se sienta parte de la ciudad, que la sienta realmente suya, para poder tomar conciencia, mantener los lugares limpios y asegurarse que hacen las cosas correctas, respetando las reglas. Que cuando llegue un nuevo residente le podamos recordar que “todos somos parte de la solución.” “

INVESTIGACIONES SOBRE INMIGRACIÓN Y LAVADO DE DINERO

Doral ha crecido básicamente por el constante flujo de familias inmigrantes. Por lo tanto, las medidas que el gobierno federal está tomando tienen un impacto importante para muchos de los residentes. Bermúdez explica que no es el trabajo de la Policía de Doral el verificar los estados migratorios. En ese caso es responsabilidad del condado cuando recibe los casos. “No estamos aquí para hacer el trabajo de las agencias federales. Nosotros debemos velar por la seguridad de nuestra comunidad. Para nosotros no hace diferencia

si usted está o no legal, no le vamos a preguntar si lo encontramos haciendo algo indebido, de eso se encargará el Condado; nuestro objetivo es proteger a nuestra comunidad.” Por otra parte, es importante que los residentes comprendan que si necesitan ayuda de emergencia pueden acudir a la policía y otras autoridades sin miedo; ellos existen para ayudar a las personas sin distingo del estatus migratorio. “Si alguien tiene un problema y necesita ayuda nosotros no preguntamos, solo le ayudamos” explica Bermúdez. “La discusión a nivel nacional y la postura del Condado Miami-Dade son un asunto entre el Condado y el Gobierno Federal. Nosotros solamente esperamos que todas las personas sigan las reglas.” Sin embargo, la Policía de Doral hace un trabajo preventivo importante contra el lavado de dinero. Detectives de la Policía de la Ciudad de Doral asignados a la Unidad de Investigación General, forman parte de la brigada especial contra narcotráfico y lavado de dinero del FBI, y sirven de apoyo para localizar y atrapar a criminales envueltos en ese delito. Una investigación aparecida en el Miami Herald en 2015 determinó que al menos 83 negocios en Doral participaban de lavado de dinero. USA Today está investigando para escribir una historia sobre ese punto y entrevistaron al Alcalde Bermúdez. “Esto va a aparecer en una historia nacional, porque desafortunadamente muchos negocios de Doral existen en esa lista de negocios sospechosos por diferentes razones.” La Ciudad continuará “trabajando con la brigada especial contra el narcotráfico, para asegurar que todos los residentes siguen las reglas. Ese es nuestro rol en la comunidad: asegurar el cumplimiento de las directivas del gobierno federal y que los residentes siempre hagan lo correcto.” Aunque el Código en Doral no contempla la verificación del origen de los fondos dentro del proceso de otorgar licencias de operación de negocios, el pertenecer a la brigada especial contra el narcotráfico facilita la detección de irregularidades para mandar información a las agencias correspondientes. “El poder para verificar el origen de los fondos viene del FBI, pero pienso que trabajaremos activamente y si algo sucede en nuestra ciudad podremos proveer la información oportunamente y participar de manera más activa en el proceso” dijo Bermúdez. El Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez espera “ver que muchas cosas buenas sucedan en Doral” en especial quiere ver recuperados los valores de respeto y comunidad. Está en las manos de los residentes comprometerse por su parte a seguir las reglas y contribuir de manera efectiva, eficiente y ordenada en la operación de esta ciudad que es su casa.

Councilwoman Christi Fraga holds PTA/PTSA Educator Open Forum & Appreciation Breakfast

n Friday February 3rd, 2017, Councilwoman Christi Fraga held a PTA/PTSA Educator Open Forum & Appreciation Breakfast at City Hall where administrators and PTA/ PTSA board members from every school in Doral came together to promote communication, identify goals and challenges, and discuss how the City of Doral supports its local schools. Councilwoman Fraga gave participants a presentation which outlined the City’s programs for local schools and explained how these provide additional resources, educationally engage and improve safety for Doral’s students. In order to provide additional resources for local schools, the City of Doral yearly awards a $6,000 grant to each PTA/PTSA organization and delivers $1,500 in basic school supplies to each local school. As another way of providing resources, the City’s Parks & Police 4 Kids Foundation donates 750 backpacks filled with school supplies at its yearly Back to School event in August. Additional resources also come from the City’s Computer

Donation Program which originated as a result of Councilwoman Fraga’s work with PTA/PTSA organizations whose members requested additional computers for their schools. In December 2015, Councilwoman Fraga proposed, and obtained unanimous support from the Council, to establish a City Computer Donation Program in partnership with the South Florida Digital Alliance. The program donated 135 computers to local schools in 2016, and will make 100 more available to schools in 2017. Another component of the City’s strategy in working with local schools is to undertake educational engagement. Doral Police & City employees educationally engage students when they participate in the seven (7)-week KAPOW volunteer career counseling program. The City also coordinates educational activities to commemorate Arbor Day including gifting trees to its local schools in order to teach students about protecting and sustaining the environment. In addition, Doral Police coordinate activities for the DARE program which graduates 1,500 students

per year. Moreover, the City’s PP4K Foundation recently established an After School Program for kids that in need of extra assistance. The program is presently serving 24 children at Renaissance Middle Charter School. In order to improve safety for students, Doral Police has increased its Neighborhood Resource Unit to nine (9) officers and one (1) civilian position. Officers are cross-trained as school and/or

community service officers and they assist with drop-off and pick-up at local schools. Doral Police also coordinates with local schools to implement an extensive Back to School Traffic Plan to ensure the safety of school children and residents as well as to minimize travel times for parents trying to get their children to and from school. Miami-Dade County District 12 Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz also participated in the event and thanked

l pasado viernes 3 de febrero, la Concejal Christi Fraga organizó un Foro Abierto Educativo en el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad en el cual los administradores y miembros de la junta de PTA / PTSA de cada escuela en Doral, se unieron para promover la comunicación, identificar las metas y desafíos de este año escolar, y discutir cómo la Ciudad de Doral apoya a las escuelas locales. Durante el evento, la concejal Fraga ofreció a los asistentes una presentación que describía los programas de la Ciudad para las escuelas y explicó cómo estos proveen recursos adicionales, participa educativamente y mejora la seguridad para los estudiantes en Doral. En materia de proveer recursos adicionales para las escuelas locales, se recalcó que la Ciudad de Doral otorga anualmente una subvención de $ 6,000 a cada organización PTA / PTSA y entrega $ 1,500 en suministros escolares básicos a cada escuela local. Los oficiales tienen capacitación para el servicio escolar y / o comunitario y ayudan en el momento de la llegada y la recogida del niño en las escuelas locales. Además, la Policía también coordina con las escuelas locales para implementar el extenso plan de Tráfico para el Regreso a la Escuela, para asegurar la seguridad de los niños y residentes, así como para minimizar los tiempos de viaje de los padres que tratan de llevar a sus hijos a la escuela. Parents with children in more than one school also commented on competing activities and requested Councilwoman Fraga’s assistance about how to work together to improve scheduling. “As a result of the Open Forum, our office is working on a solution to offer parents a combined PTA/PTSA events calendar. We are also working to schedule additional PTA/ PTSA combined meetings and/or workshops. I think that if we all continue to work together, we can certainly make a difference in supporting the improvement of education for Doral’s children and that is a worthy endeavor for all of us. It is certainly one of my goals as a leader and public servant in this community.” Councilwoman Fraga told participants that she will hold another PTA/PTSA Educator Open Forum & Appreciation Breakfast at the start of the 2017-2018 academic year in order to identify the goals and challenges that educators and parents will have for their respective schools at that time. The event is expected to continue to promote communication amongst educators, parents, and City officials, as well as find additional ways for the City to partner with schools to provide resources, educationally engage, and improve safety for students in Doral.

he School for Advanced Studies (SAS), a public, dual enrollment High School created between Miami –Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) and Miami Dade College (MDC), has opened its doors at the MDC-West Campus in Doral. Established in 1988, this school offers “an opportunity for enrichment and college exploration” for students all around the county. It operates at the different campuses of the Miami-Dade College, and its opening at the MDC-West campus provides an additional choice for high school students in the Doral area. Dr. Omar Monteagudo, Principal at SAS, is proud to say that “In the past 28 years, SAS has grown from one campus to five, serving the rich and diverse student population across our district. Our school takes great pride in the incredible evolution that has taken place since its inception, having grown from less than 100 students to over 650 students representing all sectors of our district.”

FREE COLLEGE LEVEL EDUCATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Students at SAS are enrolled in advanced high school subjects along with 3 or 4 college courses every school year, allowing them to receive an MDC Associate in Arts Degree along with their High School Diploma. Monteagudo explained that transportation is provided through MDCPS for students residing more than two miles from the campuses, but having different locations at the five campuses of MDC allows students to enroll at the one closer to their homes. The five locations for SAS are in North Dade, Downtown Miami, Kendall, Homestead and now in Doral. “Through our generous partnerships with MDCPS and MDC, college tuition, fees and books are waived.” SAS is a two-year program for 11th and 12th grade students, therefore “prospective students apply in their 10th grade year.” The school holds information sessions at each of the campuses in September, when applications are distributed. a Escuela de Estudios Avanzados (SAS por sus siglas en inglés), la secundaria pública a Nivel Universitario, creada conjuntamente por las Escuelas Públicas de MiamiDade (MDCPS) y el Miami-Dade College (MDC), ha abierto sus puertas en el campus Oeste de MDC en Doral. Esta escuela, establecida en 1988, ofrece “una oportunidad para enriquecer la experiencia educativa y la exploración universitaria” para los estudiantes del condado. Opera en las diferentes localidades del MDC y su apertura en el MDC-West proporciona una opción adicional para los estudiantes de secundaria en el área de Doral. El Dr. Omar Monteagudo, Director de SAS, dice que “en los pasados 28 años SAS ha crecido de una localidad a cinco, para servir a la grande y diversa población estudiantil de nuestro distrito. UN PROGRAMA RIGUROSO PARA ESTUDIANTES MOTIVADOS

LA VISIÓN DE UN ESTUDIANTE

SAS pueden tomar cursos universitarios en otro de los campus del MDC si por alguna razón el curso que quisieran tomar no lo ofrecieran en su centro. “Sin embargo, los estudiantes son estimulados a conservar el balance “familia-Trabajo” y participan en clubes, proyectos, paseos, bailes y otras actividades extracurriculares que hacen la experiencia similar a cualquier otra secundaria.

EDUCACIÓN SUPERIOR GRATUITA PARA ESTUDIANTES DE SECUNDARIA

Monteagudo explicó que MDCPS provee transporte gratuito a los estudiantes residentes a más de 2 millas del campus, y que al haber cinco localidades en MDC, permite que los estudiantes se inscriban en el que les quede más cercano a su casa. Las cinco localidades de MDC donde opera SAS son: NorthDade, Downtown Miami, Kendall, Homestead y Doral. Adicionalmente “gracias a la generosa participación de MDC, la inscripción en las materias universitarias, los libros y otros gastos son gratis.” SAS es un programa de dos años para estudiantes de 11vo y 12vo grado, de manera que “los estudiantes interesados deben aplicar en 10mo. Grado.” La escuela tiene sesiones informativas en Septiembre y allí se distribuyen las aplicaciones. Challenges of Hispanic Females and the Pursuit of Education By Belinda M. Gonzalez-Leon, Ed.D.

he percentage of Hispanic females living in poverty in the USA is 25% (The White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics, 2015). This could cause Hispanic females to feel an obligation to assist their families financially which could mean less time for schooling. Living in poverty translates to living in poor neighborhoods which in turn typically means that area schools are of limited resources. This in turn signifies that Hispanic female children will most likely not attend vital pre-school education; receive a robust elementary education; and will probably attend a high school that does not have the resources to graduate college ready students (Espinoza, 2015). Hispanic children are the least likely of all subgroups in the United States to attend preschool (The White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics, 2015). Yet, the National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families (NRCHCF) conducted a study in which they found that Hispanic students who had attended preschool had above average proficiency on preacademic and social-behavioral skills when they entered kindergarten (Carnock, 2015). When one considers that there are 17 states in the USA that report having a kindergarten population of at least 20% Hispanic females (The White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics, 2015), the long term ramifications cannot be ignored.

In his research on Hispanic students, Dr. Saenz has found that early childhood education has a profound effect on both high school and college completion (personnel communication, September 22, 2016). Former United States of American Secretary of Education Arne Duncan also stated,

The shortage of Hispanic students on graduation day in college has its roots at the beginning of the education pipeline. One of the best, most strategic ways to continue and build on the educational progress in the Hispanic community is to expand access to affordable, high-quality preschool while also boosting college completion rates” (as cited in Davis, 2013). NRCHCF also found that Hispanic students who attended preschool also did well on third grade standardized reading tests with 89% passing rate

(Carnock, 2015). Third grade reading levels are seriously important for students in the USA. Jose Cruz of the Barrio Logan College Institute oversees programs that specifically address Hispanic students whose reading levels are below average levels in the third grade (personal communication, September 22, 2016). Mr. Cruz explained that if students are not able to transition from learning to read to reading to learn, then they will not be able to comprehend reading assignments through the rest of their elementary and high school programs (personal communication, September 22, 2016). Also, within two years of this critical reading benchmark, it is typically in fifth grade that students are assessed in regards to their math skills. Elementary school Lead Teacher Joyce Aguila explains that based on a student’s fifth grade math level, decisions are made regarding how much advanced math a student can take before even entering high school (personal communication, October 19, 2016). Depending on how advanced the student’s level of math is by the time they start high school will determine whether said student can take advanced high school math courses that can earn the student free college credit as well as show colleges the level of achievement. Hispanic female students face great challenges if they do not meet the important requirements of preschool, third grade reading levels, and fifth grade math levels because Bui has found that students will make a determination to attend college as early as eight grade (as cited in Reyes & Nora, 2012). It would appear that the ability to reach college graduation can be traced as far back as to preschool and therefore the cards are stacked against Hispanic female students from a very young age. The inability to take a rigorous curriculum in elementary or high school can prevent a student from earning free college credit, from impressing colleges with their high school education, and also does not allow a student to be adequately prepared for the rigors of college academics. According to Choy, Nuñez & Cuccaro-Alamin, Saenz, Hurtado, Barrera, Wolf, & Young, and Terenzini et al., (as cited in Deruy, 2016), first-generation college students (students are who are first in their family to attend college) are more likely to be Hispanic women. First generation

college students face the challenge of not having parents to guide them through the sometimes complicated process of applying to colleges in the USA. First-generation students are more likely to have parents who find college financial aid forms difficult to fill out and are more likely to arrive on campus without proper academic preparation for a college curriculum (Mangan, 2015). Choy also found that most first-generation Hispanic students are more likely to pick easier courses and avoid science and math courses (as cited in Reyes & Nora, 2012). Again, this leaves Hispanic female students unprepared for a college education and without the pre-requisites to pursue the most promising areas of study, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). In regards to STEM, Hispanic females are less likely to graduate with a degree in the science, technology, engineering, or math field than any other group of women (The White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics, 2015). In 2010, only 3.5% of bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields were awarded to Hispanic females (The White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics, 2015). A study by the Girl Scout Research Institute, found that Hispanic girls have a high interest in pursuing a STEM education because they possess high confidence and a strong work ethic, but making that pursuit a reality is difficult because of lack of support to follow STEM, less exposure to STEM programs, and general lower academic achievement when compared to non-Hispanic white girls (Girl Scout Research Institute, 2012). The information provided above is an excerpt from a paper to be presented at the 10th Annual International Conference of 20th Century Women to be held in March at the University of Havana. Although an academic paper, the findings for parents are clear. Work closely with your students to ensure that they are meeting academic requirements in both third and fifth grade…and that is something that starts at least a year or two before entering those grades. Preschool is vital! Be sure to assist them during these specific years so that when they are finally ready to attend college, they have been armed with all the needed tools to be successful.

Test Taking Tips

ith state testing just around the corner, it is important for all our students to have all the resources necessary in order to excel in their examinations. I am confident that Miami-Dade County Public Schools has properly prepared our students. We currently employ amazing teachers and exceptional administrations all dedicated to the successes of our students. However, as a parent, I know we always want to do a little more for our children. Below are some test taking tips: 1. Get a good night’s sleep. Your child will feel better, think clearer, and be in a better mood to take on anything these tests will throw at them, including the long day of testing. 2. Have a healthy breakfast. Food is the fuel for your body and brain. Make sure that your child eats a balanced breakfast to keep them in tip-top shape throughout the day. 3. Stay focused and relaxed. Although it may seem impossible to do both things at the same time, remind your child to keep their mind on the test but to not tense up. Tensing up will only amp them up and cause unneeded stress. Remind them to breathe during the test. 4. Read the directions carefully. One of the biggest mistakes you can make on a test is to miss a question based on not following directions. By taking the time to read directions and fully understand what is being asked of them, your child will do themselves a huge favor and avoid silly mistakes. 5. Finally, stay positive and confident. All our children are well educated and intelligent, there is no reason why they should ever fell defeated in taking these tests. Our teachers and students have spent all year long preparing for these tests and all our students have received the resources and knowledge necessary. It is important for your child to go into testing days confident in their knowledge and believing in themselves. Math of a Divorce

fter countless divorces that I have been involved with throughout the years, it is still incomprehensible to me how spouses have this hatred for each other that is something out of a movie. The area of family law, whether divorce, paternity, or child support is without a doubt an emotionally charged area of law. The good thing is that there are statutes, case law and guidelines that are in place to help decide the Parenting, the Equitable distribution, the Alimony, the Child support, and Every other related matter. Yes, the acronym does spell PEACE, is that not ironic. In every aspect of these issues to be decided, the Florida Statues and laws give us equations and formulas on how to calculate child support and alimony and how the equitable distribution should happen. Even parenting can be turned into numbers by taking the 365 overnights and giving percentages to the respective parents. Companies have even benefited from creating software that does many of these calculations for us. The problem is that the emotional charge of the parties involved sometimes creates unsurmountable issues that make no sense. THEY DO NOT DO THE MATH! If emotion is removed from a divorce, it simply becomes a dissolution of a business. Obviously, those issues involving children can never just be

business, but the rest can be, even the child support. The first mistake most people make is that they get caught up in what they believe they are entitled to, instead of looking at the numbers and DOING THE MATH. For example, most families whether one or two income households always do everything possible to stretch every dollar and lets get real most just live beyond their means, the American way, especially in South Florida. These house holds are living paycheck to paycheck and on credit cards, but what happens when a divorce comes along? The two household incomes which combined helped live a certain lifestyle can no longer do that as two separate incomes for two separate households, same is true for a single income household, they now have to maintain two households. Here is where the insanity continues, despite these simple scenarios, everyone wants to get “lawyered up” and spend more money than they have to spend. Sometimes the fight is necessary, but other times all the parties are doing are spending money they can better use for their kids education or to separate peacefully and use the money to move into separate households. A divorce can be a traumatic experience, but with the right guidance of a lawyer and other professionals to help you DO THE MATH it is a start in giving you the peace of mind to move on.

espués de innumerables divorcios en los que he estado involucrado a lo largo de los años, todavía resulta incomprensible para mí ver cómo los cónyuges sienten ese odio el uno por el otro, es como salido de una película. Los casos relacionados con el derecho de familia, ya sean divorcios, paternidad o manutención, son sin duda un área de derecho cargada de emociones. La buena noticia es que existen estatutos, jurisprudencia y directrices creadas para ayudar a decidir los aspectos fundamentales en todas las relaciones familiares, tales como los derechos y deberes de los padres hacia los hijos (Parenting), la distribución de los bienes de los cónyuges (Equitable Distribution), los derechos y deberes de soporte económico de los cónyuges después de la disolución del matrimonio (Alimony), la obligación alimentaria hacia los hijos (Child Support), así como cualquier otro asunto relacionado (Every othe related matter). Como ven, resulta irónico que el acrónimo de estos asuntos legales ligados con cada divorcio, usando sus términos en inglés, forman la palabra PEACE (PAZ). En todos los aspectos a ser decididos en esta materia, las leyes del Estado de la Florida establecen ecuaciones y fórmulas sobre cómo calcular las pensiones alimenticias para los

hijos y el cónyuge, así como la forma en que la distribución equitativa de los bienes debe llevarse a cabo. Incluso la custodia y guarda de los hijos puede traducirse en números cuando se calculan 365 noches y se asignan porcentajes de tiempo y manutención a los padres. Este sistema de cálculos ha beneficiado a la empresa privada, que han visto una oportunidad de negocios a través de la creación de softwares que se encargan de realizar estos cálculos para nosotros. El problema es que la carga emocional de las partes involucradas crea muchas veces obstáculos insuperables que no tienen sentido. ¡NO HACEN LA MATEMÁTICA! Si la emoción se elimina de un divorcio, éste se convierte simplemente en la disolución de un negocio. Obviamente, los asuntos que involucran a los niños nunca pueden ser sólo negocios, pero el resto sí, incluso la manutención de los hijos. El primer error que la mayoría de la gente comete es que se ven atrapados en lo que creen que tienen derecho, en lugar de mirar los números y HACER LA MATEMÁTICA. Por ejemplo, la mayoría de las familias, si uno o los dos cónyuges aportan ingresos económicos al hogar, siempre hacen todo lo posible para estirar cada dólar y, vamos a estar claros, en la mayoría de los casos las personas gastan más de lo que ganan, the American way,

esto ocurre especialmente en el sur de la Florida. Estos hogares viven con los gastos al día, cheque de pago a cheque de pago y de las tarjetas de crédito, pero qué sucede cuando un divorcio se presenta? Los ingresos de ambos cónyuges que combinados ayudan a vivir un cierto estilo de vida ya no pueden tener el mismo efecto cuando se usen por separado para para dos hogares independientes, lo mismo ocurre en el caso de que uno solo de los cónyuges trabaje, luego del divorcio, ese ingreso deberá mantener dos hogares en lugar de uno. Aquí es donde la locura continúa, a pesar de estos escenarios simples, todo el mundo quiere obtener “abogados” y gastar más dinero de lo que tienen que gastar. A veces la lucha es necesaria, pero otras veces las partes solo están gastando dinero que pueden utilizar mejor para la educación de sus hijos o para llevar una separación pacífica y establecerse en sus nuevos hogares. Un divorcio puede ser una experiencia traumática, pero con la dirección adecuada de un abogado y otros profesionales que lo ayuden a HACER LA MATEMÁTICA, puede comenzar con la tranquilidad de hacer las cosas bien para seguir adelante.

Kendall Regional Medical Center again hosted its annual Valentineâ€™s community event for children and their families on Saturday, February 11th. The goal of this annual event is to promote heart healthy living to both children and their families. This event included pony rides, bounce houses, face painting and crafts. Children also had the opportunity to bring their teddy bears to get a health check-up at the Teddy Bear Clinic.

M-DCPS Hosts Bond Project Topping-Off Event At Doral K-8 Center Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, Board Member Susie Castillo, City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, and school and district staff gathered this past February 9th to celebrate the completion of the external structure of Phase I of the Doral K-8 project. This event is a result of the overwhelming voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The scope of work for Phase I encompasses a new 59,000 squarefoot building including, administrative offices; 37 classrooms; three extended-learning areas; two resource rooms; language arts, music, and art labs; media center; and kitchen and dining area. Phase I also includes a P.E. covered shelter area, basketball courts, primary play area with a shade structure, parking and drop off areas, and other support spaces.The total value of Phase I is $15.1 million. FIU President Mark Rosenberg hosted a welcoming reception for the Doral City Council at the Modesto Maidique Campus’ Ronald Reagan Presidential House on February 7th, 2017. President Rosenberg welcomed Doral Mayor, Juan Carlos Bermudez, Vice Mayor Pete Cabrera, Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, Councilwoman Christi Fraga, and Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez. According to Councilwoman Fraga, the reception helped highlight the importance of Doral’s continued relationship with FIU. “I was very thankful for Dr. Rosenberg’s hospitality and his leadership in hosting the Council. Our relationship with FIU is an imperative part of providing better educational opportunities for Doral’s youth. We therefore look forward to a continued successful relationship with FIU for years to come that will include important initiatives, such as the direct trolley route between the FIU and our City, student internships, as well as the economic development and transportation knowledge that FIU Centers share with our City.” Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez, who like Councilwoman Fraga is also an FIU alum, thanked FIU leaders for hosting the Council and “for working toward common goals for our community.”
