Doral Knits its first Christmas Tree A Community Project that brings Joy and Unity of Christmas
BY: GRECIA ROMERO
T
he hand-knitted Christmas Tree of the city of Doral was revealed last Sunday, December 1, at Doral Glades Park. This beautiful community project was created by more than 50 people, many of whom had no previous experience in knitting, and yet they set themselves the task of learning this art with dedication and effort, to make the Tree a reality.
THE IDEA AND ITS PURPOSE
Carolina Piernavieja and María Alejandra Moreno organized the project. Actively involved in the community, both were inspired to do this project by looking for ideas to beautify a street adopted by the Girl Scouts in Doral. “We found the image of the Tree when we searched for projects on the internet that could be done in the street adopted by the Troop. Although at that time it was not what we were looking for, I was taken by this idea of the Christmas Tree. Because of the dimensions of the work, many people would be needed to make this possible,” says Piernavieja. Carolina and María Alejandra founded a knitting group at the beginning of 2019, which they called “Needles”, and based on the experience they got from that; they decided to take the idea of the Tree to the City. Its purpose was to “connect the community with a centenary art that might have been forgotten,” and thus promoting an activity in which people of all ages could participate. The project was well-received, and in partnership between the City of Doral and Girl Scouts Troop 552, the invitation was extended to the entire community to participate in a series of four Holiday Knitting Workshops in October and November, which included free materials, and teaching instruction.

A TRUE COMMUNITY PROJECT
8
The response to the workshops was immediate and eye-catching, with 20 to 25 people attending each session. Even friends and family of participants living outside of Miami were motivated to participate and sent their knitted pieces from Texas, other locations in Florida, and even other countries such as Peru and Spain. As its organizers explain, “Knitting is an art which requires concentration and patience,” and thus, it became evident with the level of commitment and hard work of its participants who dedicated approximately 250 hours of work to finalize the Tree.
But the community effect of sharing teamwork was an even more enriching experience, as Carolina recounts: “There were participants who, after two weeks, returned happy and proud of the achievement of their little knitted square. We can certainly learn many things on the internet, but the thought that we will meet with other people to share and practice what was learned is a great incentive, and motivates people to take more challenges in the future.” A unique aspect of the workshops was that, far from being directed by a single person, knowledge was passed from one person to another, which created a very satisfying atmosphere of fellowship and mutual collaboration. In addition, this project brought together very different women in a harmonious and unique way, as María Alejandra relates: “Something beautiful about the project is that women of all ages, religions, and cultures were encouraged to share the skill and create a product of their hands. There were girls, ladies, housewives, professionals, grandmothers, single women, mothers, and I think even a policewoman!” As with each Scout activity, the last knitting workshop ended with a ‘Friendship Circle’, in which the participants held hands and shared what they liked best about the experience.
OPENING CEREMONY AND EXHIBITION
The premiere of the Tree was a joyful and emotional event, says Piernavieja, as several participants had the opportunity to place a decorative ornament on the Tree while expressing their wishes for this Christmas. “It was really moving to see people wishing health, peace, and union for themselves, their families, and the whole world. At that time, the desires for material things were set aside.” Both organizers feel grateful to the City of Doral for allowing them to make this project a reality for the material contribution and permission to exhibit the work in a public park in the city. They also extend a special thanks to all participants, friends, and family who collaborated by knitting, creating the base of the Tree, transporting it, and assembling the final work. The Christmas Tree will be on display at Doral Glades Park until the first week of January for the enjoyment of all residents and visitors as a symbol of the love, union, and joy of the Christmas season. The knitting group “Needles” will resume its activities in January 2020. For more information on dates and events, please call 305-989.2535 or 786-897.1910.

Do not leave your house unprotected
How to KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE when on holiday EDDA PUJADAS @epujadas
The police department, your neighbors and technology will be your allies when you are away from your home.
Diciembre/December 08, 2019

uring the December and end of year holidays, it is frequent and common that families take some vacation days, and thus they leave their homes alone; for this reason, it is very important to share some preventative measures to help them avoid being victims of robbery to their homes. Rey Valdes, Public Information Officer from the Doral Police Department, commented that the Doral Police Officers, your neighbors, and the correct use of the available technology resources that we have today can be your biggest allies during your absence, in order to keep your home and belongings safe. “The first thing that the residents that are planning a vacation during these festivities can do is to call the Doral Police Department and request a “watch order.” The only thing that you need to provide is your address and the dates during which you will be out of your home, and even when we cannot guarantee constant surveillance, the officers assigned to your area will be more vigilant around your home during their customary rounds.” explains Officer Valdes. Another important recommendation from Officer Valdes is to limit your use of Social Media. “I understand that people like to share with its family and friends all their experiences during their trips, but when you post photos or videos of your vacations in social media, please do not do it when you are actually in your vacations, because in this case what you are really doing is announcing to everyone that you are not at home.” Valdes states that it is much better to post these photos and/or videos on social media when you have actually returned from your vacations. He also recommends having two types of social media, a personal and private and one for work or that is more public and has no connection with your personal and family life. Your neighbors are also an important factor to help you keep your home safe. “You can ask one of your most trustable neighbors to watch over your house while you are away. For example, it is important that this person takes your garbage containers out and then put them back inside, to collect any correspondence or publicity that might have been left in your doorsteps
and even take out the mail in order to avoid your mailbox to fill up.” “Remember that thieves watch over the area before they attack and they will be taking notes of these type of details in order to determine if a home is empty, for this reason it is important to make a good use of the new technology resources that can help you create the feeling that the house is occupied, this can be achieved by programming the turning on and off the lights at certain hours. It is also very important to invest in security cameras,” adds Valdes.
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS
Today, technology is one of our biggest allies when we speak about safety. We have a broad range of resources that allow us to watch over our home through our cellular phones, from any part of the world in which we are, we can even respond to the person that is knocking at our door as if we were at home, for example. To begin with, today, we have companies that provide alarm services in case the doors or windows of our home are opened. Most of these services are communicated through cellular phones, which allow you to be informed of anything that can happen during your absence. One of the best options that exist now are sensors of movement and opening sensors for doors and/or windows. Installing these devices helps detect any movement close or inside the home, and when they do the device sends a message to your cellular phone in order for you to verify what is happening at that time and in case that it is necessary for you to contact the police. These sensors also work if there is a door and/ or a window that gets opened, so from the comfort of your cellular phone and without caring where you are located at that moment, as long as you have an internet connection available, you will be able to verify what is going on in your house. There is a huge variety of these types of sensors in the market nowadays, but you can get a whole system starting at $50 dollars.
Of course, the most well-known option today is the security cameras, whose use has become very important and today they are not only cameras, they also come equipped with movement sensors and options to store video in the cloud to and from where you can access them via internet, as each one of these cameras have its own IP address. These can also be acquiring starting at $50. Another very complete option is the smart doorbells; these include the utilities of the movement sensor, the cameras, the cloud storage, and of course, the doorbell. With this type of system, if someone knocks on your doorbell, you will be able to respond immediately, as if you were at home. There are also sensors that allow us to detect water leaks or electric problems, and these can also notify you in your cellular phone for any situation that might be putting in danger the correct operation of your home. Some more sophisticated options include motorizing your blinds and creating illumination scenes at certain times; this creates the feeling of human presence in the house. Motorizing your blinds allows you to keep them open and to close them from your cellular phone or even get them pre-programmed to do these actions at pre-determined schedules. With all these available options, the best for you is to prevent and take these precautions before you go on vacation in order to have a happy return back home. Remember that you can get in touch with the Doral Police Department by calling 305.593.6699 or sending a brief email at info@doralpd.com.

Diciembre/December 08, 2019
PEDRO FUENMAYOR: MOVILIDAD PEATONAL
20

SONIA PAREDES: MAS VIDA NOCTURNA

Enjoy your holidays GUILT-FREE BY: DIANA BELLO ARISTIZÁBAL
T
he holidays are here once again. During this time of the year, many people take a break from their healthy eating style, stop exercising, and overeat to spend a time of unlimited fun without restrictions alongside family and friends. What many people don’t know is that enjoying this time of the year with responsibility and, at the same time, staying healthy and without gaining weight, it’s completely possible. Finding a balance and making some adjustments in the routines and life habits throughout December will help you stay healthy and prevent you from starting a strict diet in January. Here are some nutritionist tips to help you spend these holidays guilt-free.
Diciembre/December 08, 2019
SAY NO TO EXPRESS DIETS, AND YES TO BALANCED EATING AND GOOD HABITS
24
The first thing we must know is that the eating style that we usually have for the most part of the year should not be seen as something temporary that allows us to reach a goal (usually lose weight), to later abandon it after reaching our goal. In fact, those who see food through this perspective not only regain the weight lost quickly but also put their health at risk. The recommendation is to opt for a balanced and sustainable eating style, understanding that the function of food is to nourish the body and provide well-being and not only help us have the body image we want. December should be seen as just another month in which the same eating habits of the rest of the year are maintained, although the vast majority of people take a break from their healthy lifestyle this month and surrender to excesses with the promise that in January they will begin a strict diet and exercise routine. On the other hand, some people deprive themselves of enjoying the food offered at meetings and parties for not gaining weight, which only brings anxiety, sadness and raises the possibility of overeating later. How not to fall into any of those corners? To begin, take the word ‘diet’ out of your vocabulary and think of a ‘balanced eating style’ instead that should be sufficient in quantity and quality. We have a balanced eating style when the
food we put in our mouths daily gives us all the nutrients we need to stay healthy. Those are found in the different food groups available (proteins, vegetables, fruits, grains, fats, dairy, etc.) Of course, if you have food allergies or a disease, you should make the appropriate adjustments with your doctor. As for the quantity, your plate ideally should have more fruits and vegetables and less carbohydrates (without taking them out completely). Animal-type proteins should be the size of your clenched fist, and red meat should be replaced sometimes with fish or chicken. Now you may wonder, how do alcohol, sweets, and refined carbohydrates that we like so much in December fit in this equation? The answer is not to take them off the plate. Once again, the secret lies in moderation, because there are no good or bad foods, just inadequate portions. This means that if you go to a gathering where they offer, for example, Tequeños, instead of eating five portions, put two on your plate. To clarify, there is not an ideal amount for everyone, as each person has a different size, weight, lifestyle, and medical
history. Use your common sense and listen to your body. One way to avoid gaining weight is to help yourself with exercise, which should be practiced at least three times a week in sessions of 45 minutes to 1 hour or 30 minutes daily. You don’t need to adopt a too structured routine, just walk every day or play with your children. Be creative! Physical activity should be part of your weekly routine at all times of the year, as this not only helps maintain weight but improves physical resistance, regulates blood pressure, provides well-being and protects you from diseases. Another tip is to make the grocery list according to a preset menu. Prepare in advance all the meals in which you will not be at a celebration or a family gathering. If you eat well in your daily routine, it will not be so problematic that you indulge yourself in unhealthy food at Christmas celebrations. With regard to sleep, it is proven that poor sleep increases the chances of gaining weight, due to the fact that a tired brain usually has cravings for foods high in sugar and carbohydrates. On the other hand, be careful with alcohol. If you go to a family gathering where, in addition to desserts and ‘pastelitos’, alcoholic beverages are served, remember that everything adds up. On average, a serving of alcohol contains between 100 and 150 calories, which does not include the calories of high-sugar ingredients such as those found in end-of-the-year drinks such as sangria, coquito, or eggnog.

Disfrute el fin de año LIBRE DE CULPAS POR: DIANA BELLO ARISTIZÁBAL
L

26

Compound Interest: The 8TH WONDER of the World
I
“Compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it; he who doesn’t, pays it.” - Einstein
s not what you know is what you don’t know that can hurt you! Let me ask you. Do you know how interest is charge on a Credit card? On a Mortgage? According to a Gallup poll, about half of American credit card users sometimes carry a balance on their cards. If you’re one of those millions of users, you’ve almost certainly noticed interest charges on your monthly card statement. We need to learn how credit cards work, we need prepare ourselves and our children for this financial burdens. Interest “It’s really a fee for using someone else’s money,” explains Todd Christensen, director of education at Debt Reduction Services, a nonprofit debt management and credit counseling organization in EEUU. “Interest is like rent: The longer you pay interest, the more interest you pay — and at the very end, you get nothing back.” Don’t this sound like your house rent? You rent, rent, rent and at the end you get nothing back.
WHAT IS MY INTEREST RATE?
Let’s say you have a credit card and an average daily purchase balance of $1,500 at the end of your 30-day billing cycle. You also have a variable purchase APR of 15.99%. Here’s how to calculate your interest charge (numbers are approximate). Divide your APR by the number of days in the year. 0.1599 / 365 = a 0.00044 daily periodic rate Multiply the daily periodic rate by your average daily balance. 0.00044 x $1,500 = $0.66 Multiply this number by the number of days (30) in
your billing cycle. $0.66 x 30 = $19.80 interest charged for this billing cycle The math requires some work, but the concept is simple: Carry a balance, and you’ll pay interest. The key term is Daily Balance, if you carry debt, there is no grace period. You are paying interest every day on your new purchases; even when you pay the full amount of the new purchases! The important thing is to learn how to play the credit card interest game. You cannot place your money in a checking account at 0% in the bank, and pay 29% APR or more in a credit card with balance. That is a suicidal method of getting out of the debt. Credit Cards are an excellent tool. Why use them: • They will help build your credit for future purchase of a car or dream home. • You do not have to carry cash. Cash can be lost or stolen. • You can take advantage of the reward cash back or miles programs credit cards offer. • You can budget your expenses. When you pay with credit card you have extra protection if you have a problem with the vendor. When you pay cash is more difficult to dispute. Just learn the rules so you can use it on your favor not on the bank interest.
HOW IS THE BEST WAY TO PAY CREDIT CARDS?
a) Budget for it. Be smart using the money. Budget definition: an estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time. Many times we misunderstand the word budget (expend less and save more). No; budget
is to know how to manage your money, so you can put it to work to the best use for you. b) Let’s pay less interest, transfer balance to your low interest credit cards, or let’s try to get $0 balance promotion on new credit cards. c) Use time to your advantage, learn how to use billing cycles, due dates. The more days you have in a period of time, the more money you can put against your daily balance. There is no magic formula to eliminate debt. The Principal need to be paid in small steps; dollar by dollar. What we can show you are the strategies to pay less interest. Join our workshops on First Time Home Buyers, we will help you improve you financial knowledge. If you don’t tell your money what to do, someone else will use to your money and will not be in your best interest, will be in theirs. Aleph Team has one mission, to inform people, how to pay less interest. Family financial freedom is important and we can achieve this together with good financial habits.

Grades Are Not the Only Thing THAT MATTERS! BY: BELINDA GONZALEZ-LEON, ED. D., MBA Premier Educational Consulting, LLC
G
rades are important for your college application. Yes, they could even be considered more important that your SAT or ACT scores. However, locking yourself up in your room and studying 24/7 will not get you into Harvard. Students need to have a balanced life that includes activities outside of the classroom. My neighbor’s nephew made this very mistake and has not been able to get into a good college because despite his extremely high GPA, he does not participate in clubs nor sports nor community service. Not even a job. Yes, extra-curriculars count! By participating in activities, students can show colleges that they can balance studying as well as the responsibilities of being class president or practicing regularly for soccer games or holding down a part time job. It shows a certain level of maturity has been achieved as well as dedication to an interest. Extra-curricular activities allow students to develop leadership roles and how to work as a team. They offer opportunities to interact with others in a social manner that will be needed as students continue into adulthood. All of these are skills that
cannot be learned inside a classroom or in a book. Colleges want students that will make their campuses vibrant. They want students who will excel academically but will also help the college win music competitions or have the top football team or attract internships with top companies. Do you think that landing a job with Facebook or Apple is simply based on your grades in college? No, it’s based on your ability to lead a team and have engaging conversations with others. Those abilities begin in high school and are practiced in college. When I visited the University of Pennsylvania,
my favorite stop was the student center building. It was electric! So many students were milling around the numerous offices. Each office represented a different school organization. The students were excited and busy in their activities. You could feel it immediately and it made visitors want to attend that

www.doralfamiyjournal.com school. But you don’t just show up at the university and become that person. The students at UPENN had been active in high school and they brought those experiences to college. During a visit that I did to Princeton University, my students were fascinated with a young Latina who told them that she was a little surprised when she was accepted at Princeton. She had good grades, but she knew many other students had higher GPAs. My students asked her what helped her get in? She explained that she was very involved in different political organizations at her high school, but she believed the tipping factor was her years long practice of Kenjutsu – Japanese sword fighting. Your extra-curricular activity could be Girl/Boy Scouts. It could be the Student Government Association or the Future Business Leaders of America. Perhaps you take part in every drama performance at school or you’re in the high school band. There is also soccer, football, gymnastics, cheerleading, basketball, tennis, and golf – whether it be the school team or not. Some of you may hold down a job at a local store or maybe you have your own private entrepreneurship venture. You may even have gone so far as to develop a passion project (what’s that? Ask me!). Regardless, do something that you love and that you will stick to for years. Start in high school or in middle school. The point is to develop who you are as a person and not just a grade. The colleges will love you for it.

A BASIC GUIDE to entering the FRANCHISES SYSTEM BY: DIANA BELLO ARISTIZÁBAL
Diciembre/December 08, 2019
T
40
he franchise system is growing increasingly strong in the United States. For this reason, many people have decided to choose this business model that is creating a positive impact on the economy by being the source of 21.0 million jobs, $ 660.9 billion of payroll, and $ 2.31 trillion of output. If you plan to start 2020 by becoming a franchisee, that is, an entrepreneur who operates under the umbrella of an already established brand name and has limited power by a contractual agreement with a franchisor, take a look at the following tips that will help you put your plan in motion. First, you should know that franchised businesses are very appealing, as confirmed by statistics. According to Florida SBDC (Small Business Development Center) of FIU, in 2015, there were 909,253 franchise system businesses in the United States, which represents 3.3 percent of all commercial establishments in the country. And why is this business so appealing? According to George Ray III, a business consultant at Florida SBDC, franchising “reduces risk exposure, is proven to be profitable because of the brand name and follows a standardized process that reduces errors.” These were his words in the seminar ‘Franchising: What You Need to Know’ that took place in Doral. “One of the main challenges that entrepreneurs face today is not having a clear and proven concept. With the franchise system, we eliminate the game of guessing how to operate a business, ”says George Ray III. This translates into products and services that are presented to the public with the same level of quality and features. For example, if you own a McDonald’s franchise, customers who order a certain type of burger receive the same product regardless of where they buy it (point of sale). On the other hand, franchisees get training, financial assistance, and a support system that is very important for those who lack experience as entrepreneurs. “This can make a difference between succeeding or not,” says the expert. About this, experts agree that is a good idea talking to the franchisor to understand what the support system really looks like, as most will say they offer support in marketing, real estate, and operations. However, it is important to know what resources will
be provided and who will be in charge of providing such support. But this system also has its limitations that should be accounted by the franchisee. To start, there are several associated costs besides the franchise cost. These are the initial franchise fee, investment costs, royalty payments, and advertising expenses. In addition, there is little space for independence, contrary to what happens when opening a brand new business. “It’s about following the rules, knowing the differentiating value of the brand and maintain it,” says George Ray III. On the other hand, some franchises have restrictions with respect to the sales territory, the goods or services that can be sold, require specific operating hours, and control advertising.
OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS
Besides knowing the advantages and disadvantages of franchise systems, it is important to analyze the market opportunities available to select the option that matches up with the franchisee’s needs and aspirations. This means studying potential franchises through different sources of information such as the Federal Trade Commission, Internet, franchise consultants, and even franchisors themselves. “For example, if you are interested in owning a restaurant franchise, go to the restaurant, talk to some employees and make a personal observation of the business,” advises George Ray III. Matthew Stanton, Chief Development Officer of WellBiz Brands, Inc., and manager of franchise brands such as Amazing Lash Studio and Fitness Together, talks about this in his article ‘5 factors franchisees must know before signing on the dotted line’. For the expert, the best way to understand what the intricacies of a franchise are that drive success is to talk with other franchise owners in the brand’s system. You have to know “what are the key performance indicators (KPI’s) that identify and help you understand the business and what drives success forward,” says
Stanton. For example, in a restaurant, it is crucial to understand how to efficiently run the kitchen to providing a proper speed of service that is critical to customer retention. “As a franchisee, you should know what those success drivers are so you can know if it matches up with your skillset,” Stanton explains. Other factors to consider are the demand and reputation of the brand, its geography, relationship with its franchisees, marketing strategies, competitors, growth possibilities, and the risks of the industry. Also, you should assess your personal risk by asking yourself questions such as: how much total investment will this franchise require? How much will be needed in operating capital reserves to cover losses after opening the franchise until it reaches the breakeven point?, How much would you have in profits? And what legal considerations should be accounted?, among others. In an exclusive interview, George Ray III explained that 70 percent of all businesses fail in their first five years, which is why it is necessary to be properly capitalized. Due to the high risk that this implies, the expert recommends choosing a franchise in which the franchisee believes and also hiring the services of a franchise consultant to ensure that all steps of the process are being followed. Lastly, it is ideal to find a lawyer who can break down the legal implications of the business and prepares the franchise disclosure document (FDD).

5 Year-end TAX ESSENTIALS
Diciembre/December 08, 2019
efore 2019 comes to a close, take some time to review these essential items to ensure you are not missing something that could cause tax trouble when you file your tax return:
50
1. Take required minimum distributions (RMDs). If you are age 70½ or older, you need to take RMDs from certain retirement accounts before Dec. 31 to avoid a 50 percent penalty! This includes most IRAs (except Roth IRAs) and 401(k)s. Your annual RMD is calculated by dividing the prior Dec. 31 balance by the life expectancy factor provided by IRS tables. 2. Watch for your IRS PIN. If you are a victim of IRS identity theft, you will be mailed a one-time use personal identification number (PIN) as added security. You can expect to receive it in the mail sometime in December. Save the PIN as it is required to file your tax return. 3. Contribute to retirement accounts. Making contributions to tax-advantaged retirement accounts like a traditional IRA or 401(k) is a great way to lower your tax liability even if you don’t plan to itemize your deductions! 4. Harvest gains & losses. If you expect to have capital gains from your investments, selling stocks in a loss position to offset the gains will lower your tax liability. In fact, you can claim excess losses of up to $3,000 to decrease your ordinary income! Timing matters with investment sales and income taxes, so having a year-end strategy can help lower your tax bill. 5. Make last-minute tax moves. Here are a few ideas worth considering: • Donate to charity to maximize itemized deductions • Make a tax efficient withdrawal from your retirement account if you are over age 59½ • Take advantage of the annual $15,000 gift-giving limit • Delay receipt of income or accelerate expenses for your small business Understanding your current situation and having a plan will help maximize your tax savings. 5 FUNDAMENTOS de impuestos de fin de año
A
Social Security BENEFITS INCREASE in 2020 BY: MARIA DEL CARMEN ORTEGA Public Affairs Specialist Social Security Administration
E
ach year, we announce the annual cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA). By law, federal benefits increase when the cost of living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Usually, there is an increase in the benefit amount people will receive each month, starting the following January. Nearly 69 million Americans will see a 1.6 percent increase in their Social Security benefits and SSI payments in 2020. Other changes that will happen in January 2020 reflect the increase in the national average wage index. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax will increase to $137,700 from $132,900. The earnings limit for workers who are younger than “full” retirement age (age 66 for people born in 1943 through 1954) will increase to $18,240. (We deduct $1 from benefits for each $2 earned over $18,240.) The earnings limit for people turning 66 in 2020 will increase to $48,600. (We deduct $1 from benefits for each $3 earned over $48,600 until the
