This was informed by the Director of Planning and Zoning, Julian Perez, who explained that through the Low Impact Development (LID) Master Plan it is intended to establish the general and specific guidelines for the management and treatment of rainwater to diminish its impact and to apply the strategies that allow for the construction of “green” structures. “The LID is an approach for land development that works with nature to manage rainwater and it’s based in the preservation and recreation of natural landscape characteristics, minimizing impervious surfaces to create a functional drainage. The idea is that rainwater can be integrated as a natural attraction of urbanism instead of being considered a discarded product, therefore avoiding the creation of ponds and future contamination”, clarified Perez.

GREEN STRUCTURES

Director Perez stated that the purpose of the LID, which is still in its analysis and evaluation phase, is to provide the City of Doral with the guidelines and necessary recommendations for the implementation and correct management of the “green” infrastructure in order to keep a natural filtration of rainwater, reduce the emission of specific pollutants in local waterways, create aesthetically pleasant developments and reduce the impact of floods in the waterway system of the city. “To promote the implementation of “green” areas provides a broad range of economic and ecological benefits to the city and the county, through the savings in the management and treatment of water, the conservation of potable water and the integration of this water to the landscape of the project, these are just some of the benefits of the enforcement of the LID”, indicated Perez. La idea es que las aguas pluviales sean integradas como un atractivo natural al urbanismo en lugar de ser consideradas un producto de desecho, evitando la creación de charcos y futuras contaminaciones”, aclaró Pérez.

ESTRUCTURAS VERDES

El director Pérez señalo que el propósito del LID, que aún están en su fase de análisis y evaluación, es proveer a la Ciudad de Doral los lineamientos y recomendaciones necesarios para la implementación y el manejo adecuado de infraestructuras “verdes” para mantener la infiltración natural de las aguas de lluvia, reducir la emisión de contaminantes específicos en las vías fluviales locales, crear desarrollos estéticamente agradables y reducir el impacto de las inundaciones en el sistema de aguas pluviales de la ciudad. “Promover la implementación de estructuras “verdes” provee una amplia gama de beneficios económicos y ecológicos a la ciudad y al condado, a través del ahorro en costos de manejo y tratamiento de agua, la conservación del agua potable y la integración de esta misma agua al paisajismo del proyecto son sólo algunos de los beneficios de la aplicación del LID”, comentó Pérez. Realmente, el LID busca canalizar el agua de lluvia de forma natural, para lo cual existen un sin número de estrategias que ya han sido aplicadas con éxito en otras ciudades y estados del país, integrándose de forma estética a los proyectos en construcción, manteniéndose siempre dentro de los parámetros de conservación del medio ambiente. “Todas estas técnicas buscan integrar el desarrollo con el medio ambiente,

The Planning and Zoning Department in the City of Doral is the area in charge of the implementation of this LID Master Plan, through its incorporation into the Integral Development Plan of the City of Doral, that will be enforced to all the new developments in construction and re-construction. Perez explained that the projects whose plans or construction permits have already been approved before the implementation of the LID will not be affected by it, he also clarified that the enforcement of the LID will not imply a higher cost for the developers, instead it will contribute to the reduction of the cost due to the impact of rainwater management. The Director of Planning and Zoning of the City of Doral stated that he believes that in all new construction and re-construction projects the application of LID techniques should be considered as for the use of “green” infrastructure strategies and as a priority tool for the management of rainwater, before recurring to the conventional methods.

Otras estrategias se centran en el diseño del sitio, tales como la reducción de las superficies impermeables conectadas, la reducción de los puestos de estacionamiento, la adición de carriles para bicicletas o techos verdes encima de plataformas de estacionamiento, para producir una variedad de beneficios ambientales. La dirección de zonificación y planificación de la Ciudad de Doral es el departamento encargado de implementar este Plan Maestro de Bajo Impacto Ambiental, a través de su incorporación en el Plan Integral de Desarrollo de la Ciudad de Doral, que será aplicado a los nuevos desarrollos en construcción y/o re-construcción. Pérez explicó que los proyectos cuyos planos o permisos de construcción hayan sido aprobados antes de la implementación del LID no se verán afectados por el mismo, a la vez que aclaró que la aplicación del LID no implicará mayor carga financiera para los desarrolladores, pues más bien contribuirá a disminuir los costos del impacto de las aguas de lluvia. El director de zonificación y planificación de la Ciudad de Doral manifestó que considera que en todos los nuevos proyectos en construcción y/o reconstrucción, el uso de estrategias de infraestructuras “verdes” y la aplicación de las técnicas del LID debe ser considerada como una herramienta prioritaria para la gestión de las aguas pluviales, antes de recurrir a los métodos convencionales.

hrough the “Brownfield” Redevelopment Program that was developed by the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the City of Doral will receive a tax credit of 500 thousand dollars to recover the money invested in the cleaning of the land that will house the future Legacy Park located in NW 114 Avenue in our city. This was announced by our Planning and Zoning Director, Julian Perez, who explained, that as it may be recalled in the land in which Legacy Park is being build, it was determined that there was arsenic present, for this reason a large amount of money had to be invested in cleaning it. “One of the incentives of the Brownfield Redevelopment Program are the tax credits for voluntary cleaning (Voluntary Cleanup Tax Credits, VCTC) and fortunately we have qualified to received this benefit, this also guarantees us that this land is completely free of environmental contamination”, explained Perez.

BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The “Brownfield” Redevelopment Program trains communities, local governments and other institutions that are interested in environmental development, in the prevention, evaluation, cleaning and redevelopment of abandoned land, taking into account that this land can suffer of environmental contamination either actual or perceived during the expansion, development and/or redevelopment of the property. The main purposes of the “Brownfield” Redevelopment Program are the reduction of environmental and public health risks due to contamination, creation of financial and regulation incentives to promote voluntary cleaning and realigning of

zones and to promote the equality and environmental justice. One of the main incentives of this environmental program is the tax credit for voluntary cleaning. In 1998, the Florida Legislature created the VCTC to stimulate public and/or private institutions to voluntarily clean contaminated areas and abandoned industrial sites. Participants must comply with the eligibility criteria established in sections 376.3078, 376.30781 and 376.82 of the Florida Statues, these refer to the re-development of contaminated land and to be a part of the “Brownfield” Redevelopment Program, in order to do this they must complete the cleaning process

través del Programa de Re-urbanización “Brownfields”, desarrollado por el Departamento de Protección Ambiental del Estado de la Florida, la Ciudad de Doral recibirá un crédito fiscal de 500 mil dólares para recuperar el dinero invertido en la limpieza del terreno del futuro parque Legacy Park que estará ubicado en la 114 avenida de nuestra localidad. Así lo anunció el director de zonificación y planificación de la Ciudad de Doral, Julián Pérez, quien explicó que, como se recordará, en el terreno donde se construye el Legacy Park se determinó que había arsénico por lo que hubo que invertir una importante suma de dinero en la limpieza del mismo. “Uno de los incentivos del Programa de Reurbanización “Brownfields” son los créditos fiscales por limpieza voluntaria (VoluntaryCleanupTaxCredits, VCTC, por su denominación en inglés) y afortunadamente, hemos calificado para recibir este beneficio que, además, nos garantiza que este terreno quedó completamente

libre de contaminación ambiental”, explicó Pérez.

PROGRAMA DE RE-URBANIZACION “BROWNFIELDS”

El Programa de Re-urbanización “Brownfields” capacita a las comunidades, gobiernos locales y otras instituciones interesadas en el desarrollo ambiental en la prevención, evaluación, limpieza y reutilización de terrenos abandonados, tomando en cuenta que estos terrenos pueden sufrir contaminación ambiental real o percibida durante la expansión, desarrollo o la reutilización de la propiedad. Los objetivos principales del Programa de Re-urbanización “Brownfield” son la reducción de los riegos ambientales y a la salud pública debido a la contaminación, crear incentivos financieros y reguladores para fomentar la limpieza voluntaria y reordenación de las zonas e

incentivar la equidad y la justicia ambiental. Uno de los incentivos principales de este programa ambiental son los créditos fiscales por limpieza voluntaria. En 1998, la Legislatura de la Florida creó el VCTC para estimular a las instituciones públicas y/o privadas a llevar a cabo la limpieza voluntaria de sitios contaminados y zonas industriales abandonadas. Los participantes deben cumplir con los criterios de elegibilidad establecidos en las Secciones 376.3078, 376.30781 y 376.82 de los Estatutos de la Florida, referentes a la rehabilitación de terrenos contaminados y entrar a formar parte del Programa de Re-urbanización “Brownfield”, completando las labores de limpieza para que los certificados de crédito fiscal puedan ser evaluados por el Departamento de Protección Ambiental de Florida. es el organismo encargado de la gestión ambiental en nuestro estado, que tiene a su cargo el resguardo del aire, el agua y la tierra y trabaja bajo la visión de crear fuertes relaciones con la comunidad y con las instituciones públicas y privadas para salvaguardar los recursos naturales de la Florida y mejorar sus ecosistemas. “Siendo así”, indica Pérez, “recibimos una notificación del Departamento de Protección Ambiental de la Florida, informándonos que la Ciudad de Doral había sido elegida para recibir un crédito fiscal de 500 mil dólares, una vez que había sido revisada y aprobada nuestra aplicación para el incentivo de créditos fiscales por limpieza voluntaria”. El director de zonificación y planificación de Doral señaló que este tipo de incentivos es un beneficio para todos pues permite recuperar los recursos públicos de la ciudad invertidos en descontaminación ambiental y en la preservación misma de los recursos naturales y del medio ambiente. “El año próximo aplicaremos de nuevo a este beneficio, pues como ciudad, nos estamos esmerando en cumplir con todos los requisitos exigidos por el Programa de Re-urbanización “Brownfield”, en lo referente a la limpieza de terrenos contaminados. Nuestra meta en lograr un ambiente completamente saludable en Doral”. Pérez añadió que, una vez finalizado este proceso de solicitud y obtención de créditos fiscales, aspiran a tramitar ante las agencias ambientales del condado de Miami-Dade y del Estado de la Florida, un certificado en el que conste que este terreno está completamente limpio, en lo que al medio ambiente se refiere. “La obtención de un certificado de este tipo, le daría a los residentes de Doral la garantía de que este terreno está libre de contaminación y es también un compromiso y una obligación a futuro que exige a las autoridades velar por el mantenimiento, la preservación y la limpieza de terrenos y áreas verdes”, agregó Pérez. Este programa, unido al Plan Maestro de Bajo Impacto Ambiental que se apoya en la construcción de estructuras verdes, forma parte de los esfuerzos que hace la Ciudad de Doral, a través de su dirección de zonificación y planificación, por estimular la consolidación de una “green city”.

Perez added that once this process of applying and obtaining tax credits, the next step is to process before the environmental agencies of Miami Dade County and the State of Florida, a document that certifies that the land in Doral is completely clean as it refers to environment. “Obtaining a certificate of this type will provide the residents of Doral the guarantee that the land is free of contamination and is also a commitment and a future obligation that demands that the authorities care for the maintenance, preservation and cleaning of the land and green areas”, added Perez. This program, together with the Low Impact Development Master Plan that is supported in the construction of green structures, is part of the efforts by the City of Doral through the Planning and Zoning Department to stimulate the consolidation of a “green city”.

n order to strengthen ties with the community and to provide more services, the Doral Police Department will have a new Substation, having as goal to serve the residents, vendors, work force and visitors of the city with the same efficiency and level of service that has been done until now. This was announced by Captain Carlos Arango, who explained that the construction of this substation will start next Wednesday, July 20th, this is thanks to the joint effort of the City of Doral and the Doral Police Department that have as its main goal to serve our community. “This building will provide the Doral Police Department with an additional way to serve the Doral community and to offer more safety to each of the residents of our city. The facilities will be located in the heart of Doral, at 3719 NW 97th Avenue, a very centric and easy to access location, even for people that do not have a vehicle,” explains Captain Arango. This police complex, which is expected to be ready in approximately 12 months will not only include the police sub-station but also a Community Center. “This is part of our commitment to be vigilant and to be close to the community, we definitely want to work with the support of the residents of Doral, this is the only way to prevent crime.” In this substation, people will have access to the different divisions and services of our security force, such as the school unit, the community resource unit, the bike squadron, and the K-9, to name some. “We really want to expand our services and focus them to the community, so the residents can feel supported, and protected by us.” In this station, residents, business owners, visitors, etc, will be able to request police records, copies of police reports or request free security inspections, among the multiple services available. “After the inauguration of this sub-station, the Doral community will have two police “headquarters”, the actual located at 6100 NW 99th Avenue and the new one that, as we mentioned before will be located at 3719 NW 97th Avenue,” emphasized Captain Arango. on el objetivo de estrechar los lazos con la comunidad y prestar un servicio más amplio, el Departamento de Policía de Doral tendrá una nueva subestación, en la que se espera atender a los residentes, comerciantes, trabajadores y visitantes de la Ciudad con la misma eficiencia y vocación de servicio que se ha hecho hasta ahora. Así lo anunció el capitán de la Policía de Doral, Carlos Arango, quien explicó que el inicio de la construcción de esta nueva subestación policial se realizará el próximo 20 de julio, gracias al trabajo y esfuerzo conjunto de la Ciudad de Doral y de este cuerpo de seguridad que tiene como meta principal servir a nuestra comunidad. “Esta sede adicional proporcionará al Departamento de Policía un medio adicional para atender a la comunidad de Doral y ofrecer más seguridad a cada uno de los habitantes de esta ciudad. Estas instalaciones estarán localizadas en el corazón de Doral, en la 3719 NW con 97 avenida, una ubicación muy céntrica y de fácil acceso, incluso para las personas que no poseen vehículo”, explica el capitán Arango. Este complejo policial, que se espera que esté listo en un tiempo aproximado de 12 meses, no sólo incluirá la sub-estación de la policía, sino también un centro comunitario. “Esto es parte de nuestro compromiso de vigilancia y acercamiento a la comunidad, pues definitivamente, queremos trabajar con el apoyo de los residentes de Doral, pues es la única de prevenir los delitos”. En esta estación policial, las personas podrán tener acceso a las diferentes divisiones y servicios de este cuerpo de seguridad, como la unidad escolar, las unidades de recursos comunitarios, la escuadra ciclística y la unidad canina (K-9), por nombrar algunas. “Realmente, queremos expandir nuestros servicios y orientarlos a la comunidad para que los vecinos se sientan apoyados, protegidos y respaldados por nosotros” En esta estación, los residentes, propietarios de negocios y visitantes podrán solicitar records policiales, copias de los informes de la policía o programar inspecciones de seguridad gratuitas, entre muchos de los servicios policiales disponibles. “Tras la inauguración de esta subestación, la comunidad de Doral contará con dos sedes de servicio policial, la actual, ubicada en la 6100 NW con 99 avenida y la nueva que, como

Esta nueva subestación también servirá para ampliar el programa “Un Lugar Seguro” (Safe Spot Program, por su denominación en inglés), que la Policía de Doral ofrece a la comunidad desde agosto del 2015, como una forma de proporcionar a la comunidad un entorno más seguro para realizar transacciones de compraventa por internet o cumplir con los requisitos de custodia de menores.

Este programa se basa en poner a la disposición de la comunidad el vestíbulo de las estaciones policiales para efectuar ciertas actividades que requieren un sitio seguro para la tranquilidad de las personas involucradas. “Por ejemplo”, explicó el capitán Arango, “en muchas ocasiones, los divorcios, separaciones u otros conflictos familiares implican que los padres deban encontrarse para intercambiarse al niño de acuerdo a los horarios establecidos por la corte, lamentablemente, hay casos en que este momento se convierte en un catalizador de disputas que pueden llevar a un incidente de violencia doméstica, por lo que el Departamento de Policía de Doral ofrece sus instalaciones para este encuentro”. Otro ejemplo mencionado por Arango fueron las transacciones por internet que se han convertido en una forma rutinaria para la compra y venta de bienes. Desafortunadamente, hay sitios web que no son lo suficientemente seguros y pueden llevar a las personas a ser víctimas de estafas, por lo que el Departamento de Policía de Doral ofrece sus sedes para que vendedores y compradores se puedan reunir en un entorno más seguro. Bajo este programa, el vestíbulo de la Policía de Doral está disponible de 9:00 de la mañana a 9:00 de la noche. El capitán Arango aclaró que el sitio habilitado para este programa es el vestíbulo de la sede policial, no el área de estacionamiento y señaló que es muy importante que se le informe al oficial de turno sobre la naturaleza de la transacción. Entre las actividades policiales recientes, el capitán Arango destacó la exitosa culminación de la cuarta temporada de la Academia de Policía Ciudadana y el próximo inicio de la quinta temporada el venidero 20 de julio del 2016, para la que ya están inscritos un importante número de residentes interesados en conocer más de cerca el trabajo policial. “La Academia de Policía Ciudadana es un taller de ocho semanas que nos permite educar a la comunidad sobre el trabajo policial. City of Doral Computer Donation Program reaches a milestone: 100 computers already delivered to Doral schools in 2016!

n July 13th, 2016, forty (40) refurbished computers arrived at the Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center to begin their new careers as teaching tools for Doral’s school children. The donation brings the overall total of computers donated to City of Doral schools to 100, thanks to a computer donation program spearheaded by Vice Mayor Christi Fraga, and supported unanimously by a City Council Resolution from December 2015. Members of the Eugenia B. Thomas PTA, school officials, and Vice Mayor Christi Fraga were on hand to receive the computers, which among many things, will be used in the school’s Media Center for ESOL curriculum students to learn English. The City of Doral computer donation program includes an agreement between the City and the South Florida Digital Alliance (SFDA), a non-for profit organization which collects the City’s surplus computers, which in the past had been sold at auction for nominal return, and refurbishes them using funds from a generous grant provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The SFDA then redistributes the computers to any Doral school that places a request with the organization. The recycling aspect of the program also makes it a “green” imitative. Thanks to the City of Doral computer donation program, between February and April 2016, the SFDA has already delivered thirty-five (35) computers to Dr. Ronaldo Espinosa K-8 Center, and twenty-five (25) to John I Smith K-8. Vice Mayor Fraga expects that during this first year in operation, the program will donate 150 computers to Doral schools and will average 100 computers in annual donations going forward. “Doral PTAs work very hard to improve educational resources for students in our community. They approached me with this need and I was honored to have been able to help out by putting forth this initiative. I’m enormously thankful that we have reached the milestone of having donated 100 computers, and I want to thank my colleagues for their support, as well as the City’s administration, and the Information Technology Department. One of my commitments with Doral is to promote excellent quality educational standards and resources for our local schools. We are working hard to reach the 150 computer goal by December of 2016,” said Vice mayor Fraga. “We are also expecting that this program will continue for many years to come in our community.” The SFDA was incorporated in 2009 under the name of the Miami-Dade Broadband Coalition and collaborates with local organizations and government to implement programs such as the one that has been established with the City of Doral in order to help spread affordable technology throughout communities.

l 13 de julio, 2016, cuarenta (40) computadoras renovadas llegaron al centro escolar Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 para prestar por segunda vez sus servicios, ahora como herramientas educativas para los estudiantes de Doral. Con esta entrega, sumarán ya a un total de 100, las computadoras que se han donado a las escuelas de Doral durante este año. Este programa de donación de computadoras lo encabezó la Vice Alcaldesa Christi Fraga y fue apoyado unánimemente por una resolución del Consejo en diciembre del 2015. Miembros de la Organización de Padres y Maestros de EBT, oficiales del colegio, y la Vice Alcaldesa Fraga estuvieron presentes para recibir las computadoras, que se utilizarán también en el Centro de Computación del colegio para que los estudiantes del currículo ESOL aprendan inglés. El programa de donación de computadoras de la ciudad de Doral incluye un acuerdo entre la ciudad y la Alianza Digital de la Florida (SFDA), una organización sin fines de lucro que recoge las computadoras que desincorpora la ciudad y que en el pasado se vendían en subasta con un retorno nominal. Con este programa son ahora repotenciadas utilizando fondos donados generosamente por la Fundación John S. y James L. Knight. A través de la SFDA, las computadoras se distribuyen a las escuelas de Doral que establecen peticiones con la organización. El aspecto de reciclaje del programa lo hace también una iniciativa “verde.” Gracias a este programa, entre febrero y abril del 2016, la SFDA le ha entregado 35 computadoras al centro escolar Dr. Ronaldo Espinosa K-8 y 25 a John I. Así lo dio a conocer el oficial de la Policía de Doral, Luís Martínez, quien señaló, que estas actividades se realizaran el próximo 02 de agosto del 2016, entre las 5:00 de la tarde y las 8:00 de la noche en el parque Downtown Doral, ubicado en la 8395 NW con 53 calle de nuestra ciudad y ambas tienen como objetivo principal estrechar los lazos entre este cuerpo de seguridad y nuestra comunidad. “Si bien los departamentos de policía y el de parques son los principales organizadores de esta actividad comunitaria, todas las divisiones de la Ciudad de Doral están involucradas de una forma u otra en este evento en el que la entrada y el estacionamiento serán completamente

gratis y para el cual se espera una asistencia estimada de 2 mil personas”, explicó el oficial Martínez. Como se recordará, el año pasado, durante esta misma actividad, el Departamento de Parques donó a los residentes de Doral un total de 500 mochilas contentivas de útiles escolares, por lo que estima que en esta ocasión sean entregados 750 mochilas para el colegio, lo cual representa una ayuda al presupuesto familiar que, generalmente, se ve afectado por las compras relativas al regreso a clases. Durante este “Back 2 School”, los restaurantes y comercios locales también tendrán una importante participación, pues estarán obsequiando muestras de sus comidas, así como materiales escolares como lápices, borradores, reglas y calculadoras, por ejemplo, con sus respectivos logos. “De esta forma, todos se benefician, los niños al recibir utensilios necesarios para sus clases y los negocios de la ciudad al poder promocionar sus marcas”, señaló el oficial Martínez.

En esta actividad, la Policía de Doral, además de ser uno de los organizadores principales, tiene la importante misión de resguardar la seguridad de los asistentes y de todos los participantes, así como también está a cargo de la celebración “National Night Out” que se realizará esa misma noche.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

“La celebración conocida como “National Night Out” es un festejo a nivel nacional que tiene como objetivo reconocer los esfuerzos anti-crimen y lo que realmente se conmemora es la colaboración entre los cuerpos policiales y las comunidades para prevenir la comisión de hechos delictivos”, manifiesta el oficial Martínez. Esta actividad se realiza en varios estados del país, desde 1984, el primer martes del mes de agosto y con ella se pretende estrechar los lazos de colaboración entre la policía y los ciudadanos. “Queremos darles las gracias a los vecinos por su ayuda y a la vez estimularlos a que nos sigan ayudando, que continúen llamando y denunciando los delitos, pues nosotros somos servidores públicos, dispuestos a brindarles nuestros servicios”, recalcó el oficial Martínez. Durante esta noche, los agentes de la Policía de Doral harán demostraciones de las actividades de sus diferentes departamentos, como la unidad canina, las patrullas motorizadas y los exploradores, a manera de mostrarle al público un poco del trabajo policial. “También estaremos ofreciendo información a las personas interesadas en fortalecer sus conocimientos en seguridad y prevención del delito”. Igualmente, se contará con la presencia de negocios relacionados con el área de la seguridad, como compañías de seguro, empresas de alarma y cerrajeros, entre otros, que estarán presentando exhibiciones de sus productos. “Recordemos que esta será una actividad familiar, por lo que habrá también entretenimiento para los niños, como colchones inflables para brincar, juegos y dulces. What is an Allergy?

n allergy is a peculiar reaction to a substance than is not harmful to normal, non-allergic people. “Allergy,” however, is an often misunderstood term. Most people believe that an allergy refers to any uncomfortable reaction to a substance that is inhaled, eaten, or that touches the skin. Symptoms that are attributed to allergy include sneezing, wheezing, nasal irritation, cough, runny and/or stuffy nose, heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, and a variety of skin rashes. The main confusion is that some substances can cause these symptoms in a non-allergic way. Examples of non-allergic reactions would be inhaling perfume (causing sneezing because of simple irritation) and ingesting milk (causing bloating because of a deficiency of an enzyme that helps digest sugars in the milk). Further complicating the issue is that a substance like milk can also cause true allergic reactions including hives and wheezing. In fact, “allergy” implies that the body’s immune system is responding to a substance, or allergen, in such a way that it leads to some of the symptoms mentioned above. This occurs when the immune system sends white blood cells (as well as other cells and chemical mediators) to the site of the body where it encounters an allergen. These cells and chemicals cause the changes in the tissues that lead to allergic-type symptoms. Examples of allergens include tree pollen, cat dander, dust mites, and several foods. A requirement of such

an allergic immune response is that the immune system be able to recognize a substance as being foreign - not normally present in the body. Put simply, the substance must contain molecules with certain characteristics (having a protein or large carbohydrate structure, for example) to enable it to be recognized by the immune system and give rise to an allergic response. This explains why the runny nose caused by cold air in some is not a true allergic phenomenon. People with allergic inflammation in their noses, however, are often more troubled by irritants such as smoke. A useful analogy is the following: Salt poured on intact, healthy skin causes no discomfort, but if you pour salt on an open wound it is quite painful. Why allergy occurs in the first place is still a mystery. Some believe that allergy is simply a mistake of the immune system. That is, the immune system may “believe” that an allergen is an infectious organism such as a bacteria or virus. Consequently, the immune system sends those white blood cells (such as lymphocytes) and chemicals to the tissues to ward off this false infection. Nasal congestion, for instance, might represent the immune system’s attempt to restrict the allergen (thinking it’s a virus or bacteria) from gaining deeper entry into the body. Researchers have noted that there is an increase in the proportion of people suffering from allergies. Some believe that air pollution and heavier exposure to indoor allergens (spending more time inside tightly insulated homes) is to blame. Another interesting theory is that allergies are our society’s trade off for being so sanitary. That is, our immune system is not as busy fighting off genuine infections as much as before, with the consequence being more frequent mistaken allergic immune responses. This theory is interesting in light of the lower incidence of allergy seen in poorer parts of the world with more exposure to parasitic infections. Another very interesting development of the past few years has been the rise in food allergy. It turns out that the medical establishment apparently got this one wrong. They figured that by having infants avoid allergy causing foods until they were older would lead to a decrease in food allergy. So, several years ago, there were recommendations that suggested that children avoid peanuts, for instance, until they were one or two years of age. The result of these recommendations likely lead to the increase in peanut allergy. Recent studies from Israel and England have shown that exposing children to peanuts very early in life led to a decrease in the incidence of peanut allergy. Finally, the question is what to do about treating allergic symptoms? First, it is important to determine what a person may be allergic to. The diagnosis can sometimes be made by the patient’s history alone, but allergy skin tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis. The next step is to avoid exposure to the allergens. For food allergies this is the only scientifically proven treatment. But for airborne allergens, medications can be very helpful since it may be impossible to totally avoid exposure. In addition to medications, immunotherapy (allergen injections) can be an effective remedy.

That changed dramatically when the school system gradually developed until getting where are today: a well established school structure which offers a great variety of programs from elementary school, to colleges and universities.

The busy schedules of families nowadays, the competitive professional work environment, and the social pressure to meet educational standards, seem to leave not room for homeschool children anymore. But regardless the unthinkable or extreme that homeschool might be for some families, many more parents are coming back to that practice, and the current statistic of 2.3 million home-educated students in the United States is increasing each year. Those parents have decided to get into the challenge because of social influence, bulling, academic performance, family needs or interests, and/or religious reasons among many other factors. But, is it realistic to do it? A brief look at the options and testimonies of experienced parents can be a starting point for those considering homeschooling their children.

GETTING TO KNOW THE OPTIONS

According to the Estate of Florida statutes, compulsory attendance laws apply to all children between the ages of 6 and 16, requiring them to be enrolled in one of the available educational options: public or private school, home education program, or private tutor program. For those families wishing to educate their children at

home, there are three options allowed under the Florida law: • Non campus-based private or public school: also known as online schools or virtual instruction programs. It can be run publicly or privately, following the procedures set by the school system. This option can be a combination with, or take place of, the traditional classroom learning and allows students to work with their curriculum and teachers over the internet in an interactive learning environment. Parents are not supposed to get any particular curriculum or be in charge of directly teaching their children. • Home Education Program: This is a parent-directed option with minimal regulation or oversight by the State which means that parents choose and execute the curriculum their kids will follow at home. Under this option, parents are not required to hold a valid regular Florida teaching certificate but after sending a Notice of Intent to the local school superintendent to stablish their home education program, they will have to maintain a log of activities and portfolio of work, and filing an annual evaluation. Children who follow this program may participate in the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, are eligible for admission to Florida College System, and for admission to state universities. • Private Tutoring Program: This option allows children to be educated at home by a private tutor that must holds a valid Florida certificate to teach the subjects or grades in which instruction is given. Among all requirements, the tutor must keep records and make all reports required by the state and district school board. Most families choose either private/public online school or home education because private tutoring programs are extremely expensive.

They also found beneficial that homeschooling allows parents to work on a precise methodology of learning for each child’s needs, and it does not have to be a “cookie-cutter” where everyone has to learn the same way because everyone learns and uses their senses differently. “We used a hybrid method in which we had the virtual curriculum and we complement it with homeschool programs offered by the City of Miami, online text books, and hands-on activities in areas in which our daughter showed interest such as STEM. We firmly believe in this educational method because we saw our daughter blossom in different areas such as her critical thinking, arts, and science, and also developing passion and discipline which have helped her develop her character at the social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual level.” Wanda considers that even though each family is

They are both very quick learners and would become easily bored in school. At home they are able to work at their own pace” says Yvette who takes the leading role supporting their children in their studies. After evaluating the available options for home education, the Esquivel decided to choose the virtual school program instead of purchasing their own curriculum. They wanted to leave the door open because their children future interests. “They may want to go back to a brick and mortar school in the future to pursue academic and athletic goals and this way they are taking the same classes and state mandated tests as any other Public school in the county”. As any family getting into a new scheme, they had to make certain changes. They needed to adjust their schedule making sure they had 5-6 hours a day available

to be present for support and guidance and provide their children a quiet, organized and well-lit space for learning. One of the main advantages of home schooling for the Esquivel is that “children are at home and therefore are free from bad influences that are so dominant in our schools today”. They also find beneficial that their children can work at their own pace and they freedom to choose their own hours, and finally they have proven that “spending so much time at home in a more relaxed and less pressured environment brings the family closer together”. The most common fear about home-based education is the belief that homeschool children has limited opportunities to socialize and that could affect their normal development. Yvette considers that the lack of social interaction during school hours may be more of a challenge for families who have chosen home schooling for their children during most of their school years. “My children have chosen this option for just one or two years and therefore have always been in a school environment and have even studied abroad. Nevertheless, during these years that they are learning at home I have made sure that they are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities that provide them with plenty of social interaction with other children their age. My son is in a competitive basketball team and between games, team practices and training he spends time with his friends and teammates almost daily. He also has many of his friends come over often. My daughter keeps socially active by spending time with life-long friends on the weekends and she has participated in tennis, art classes and is currently an active member of Girl Scouts.” “One of the things we enjoy most about this option for learning is all the extra time we have to spend with our children. Some days can be challenging as we all have unexpected situations come up in our personal lives and still have to be able to complete many hours of

Idania and Alfred Bermudez have two grown up children. When their son Alfredo (23) was a teenager, they decided to homeschool him because of bulling and peer pressure. Alfredo was soon enrolled in the virtual school program offered by the public school system and he successfully completed three years at home. It wasn’t an easy decision for Idania and Alfred, but it was the best option they had to support their child at that time. “The main advantage we had from the home-based education is that our son could better focus on his studies because he had no pressure from other students. However, it was challenging because homeschooling requires a lot of responsibly from the parents who have to make sure their children are following the programs, planning their classes, and scheduling their tests required by the school system”, says Idania. Based on their own experience, the Bermudez considers that homeschooling may not work for all families as it is a program that takes time, attention, and determination. “Family members and the student must be well focused to achieve the goal of completing the studies.” Even though Idania and Alfred had no previous experience in homeschooling, they didn’t feel fear. They were convinced they made the best decision for the future of their son and they don’t regret it. In fact, they consider that the whole experience was very positive for Alfredo who could focus in his studies without being bullied. “He could grow in his social skills by sharing quality time with his friends after school hours and participating in extracurricular activities. He also developed a self-driven spirit which allowed him to try new things such as playing guitar which he learned by himself.” Those homeschool years really paid off as Alfredo came back to regular school and completed their senior high school year successfully. He is currently attending Miami Dade Community College and he is a well-grounded young adult.

In their opinion every child carries within their DNA the potential to be a genius but they need the right “fertilizers and nutrients” to do so. “When parents begin realizing that their children are not developing the way they should according to their talents, skills and abilities showing disinterest or boredom in the classroom; or when they notice the that the load of school work is affecting their emotional and social development and learning is being a burden, it is a time to stop and analyze what the school system is offering and evaluate whether your children are in the right program for them”. In their opinion one of the initial challenges about the decision of home education is to overcome the phase of fear and insecurity from parents that they are able to do it right. They believe that there are no better people to wish their children reach their goals than parents, so they need to be flexible and patient in the process. “Parents need to be aware that the first year is a time to test what best work for your children and still the student will complete the school year successfully. One school year under the home education program can be completed in 4 to 6 months with a 4 hours school day. There is no need to set stressful expectations”. “Homeschooling our daughter was a fun time. It allowed us to grow as a family, and gave us the opportunity to create unforgettable and memories in which our classroom was the ocean, or a swamp. Our daughter learned from the Indians and had private lessons with scientists, engineers, doctors who taught her how to read an X-ray, dissected squids, sharks, owls, and more. Those incomparable experiences mark the life of both the student and the parent.”

Esto cambió drásticamente cuando el sistema escolar se fue desarrollando gradualmente hasta lo que se tiene hoy: una estructura escolar bien establecida que ofrece una gran variedad de programas desde la escuela primaria, hasta estudios superiores y universitarios. Por otro lado, los ocupados horarios de las familias de hoy en día, el ambiente competitivo del ámbito profesional y la presión social para cumplir con los estándares educativos, no parecieran dejar espacio para que los niños sean educados desde casa. Sin embargo, para sorpresa de algunos, muchos padres están regresando a esta práctica y la cifra de 2,3 millones de estudiantes educados en casa en los Estados Unidos está en aumento. Estos padres se sienten motivados a entrar en este desafío debido a la influencia social, el acoso escolar, la presión académica, necesidades o intereses de la familia, y/o razones religiosas, entre muchos otros factores. Pero, ¿es realista esta práctica? Un breve vistazo a las opciones y los testimonios de padres con experiencia puede ser un punto de partida para aquellos que están esta opción.

CONCOCIENDO LAS ALTERNATIVAS

De acuerdo con los estatutos del Estado de la Florida, las leyes de asistencia obligatoria que estipulan que los niños de edades de 6 a 16, deben estar inscritos en alguna de las opciones educativas disponibles: escuela pública o privada, programa de educación en el hogar, o programa de tutor privado. Para aquellas familias que desean educar a sus hijos en casa, hay tres opciones permitidas por la ley de la Florida: • Escuela pública o privada a distancia: También llamados escuelas en línea o programas de instrucción virtual, es una opción que puede combinar la educación del hogar y el aprendizaje tradicional en el aula, o sustituir el aula por el hogar permitiendo a los estudiantes trabajar con su plan de estudios y maestros en internet de forma interactiva. No requiere que los padres obtengan ningún plan de estudios en particular o estar a cargo de la enseñanza directa a sus hijos, pues siguen los procedimientos del sistema escolar regular. Existen opciones públicas o privadas. • Programa de Educación en el Hogar: Esta es una opción dirigida por los padres con una mínima

intervención del Estado, lo que significa que los padres eligen y ejecutan el plan de estudios que sus niños seguirán en casa. Aunque bajo esta opción los padres no están obligados a obtener un certificado de maestros de la Florida, si deben establecer el programa enviando un aviso de intención al superintendente escolar local, mantener un registro de las actividades y trabajos realizados, y presentar una evaluación anual del progreso de sus hijos. Quienes siguen este programa pueden participar en el programa de becas ‘Bright Futures’, son elegibles para estudiar en Florida College System, y ser admitidos en universidades estatales. • Programa de Tutoría Privada: Esta opción permite a los niños a ser educados en casa por un tutor privado que debe contar con una certificación válida en la Florida para enseñar las materias o niveles que dicte. Entre los requisitos, el tutor deberá mantener registros y hacer que todos los informes requeridos por el consejo escolar del estado y distrito. La mayoría escogen entre las dos primeras opciones de educación en casa ya que los programas tutores particulares suelen ser muy costosos.

CONOCIENDO FAMILIAS QUE HAN EDUCADO DESDE CASA

Los requisitos de la Ley y las opciones disponibles son sólo algunos de los factores a considerar antes de tomar la decisión de educar en casa a sus hijos. Los testimonios de estas familias podrían proporcionar una visión adicional de los aspectos importantes de esta decisión.

Wanda y Armando Fernández están criando a sus dos hijos Victoria (10), y Salomon (4) en Doral. Esta familia, amante de la naturaleza, disfruta de todo tipo de actividades que les permitan compartir tiempo de calidad juntos. Hace un tiempo decidieron educar en casa a Victoria después de darse cuenta de que el entorno escolar en el que su hija estudiaba no cumplía con sus expectativas, “El sistema escolar, tanto público como el privado, había creado un límite en la educación de nuestra hija, particularmente en el desarrollo de sus habilidades académicas y talentos. A pesar de que estaba en una escuela privada, donde hay más oportunidades de personalizar los currículos, todavía no podía ofrecer lo que ella requería”. Finalmente tomaron la decisión y se adaptaron a los nuevos cambios. Primeramente rompieron con el paradigma que ellos tenían toda la responsabilidad

Se beneficiaron de la oportunidad de aplicar una metodología precisa de aprendizaje para las necesidades de cada niño, y no un mismo “molde” para todos pues cada niño aprende y utiliza sus sentidos de manera diferente. “Nosotros utilizamos un sistema híbrido con base a un currículo virtual y lo complementamos con los programas de educación en casa ofrecidos en la ciudad, además de textos y currículos en línea, y actividades prácticas en las áreas de interés de nuestra hija como STEM. Creemos firmemente en este método educativo porque vimos nuestra hija florecer en su análisis crítico, amor por las artes, las ciencias, su pasión y disciplina por enriquecerse a nivel intelectual, social, emocional y primordialmente espiritual”. Wanda considera que a pesar de que cada familia es diferente, con los recursos adecuados muchos padres pueden usar esta opción. En su opinión, cada niño lleva en su ADN el potencial de ser un genio, pero que necesitan los “fertilizantes y nutrientes” correctos para dar fruto. “Cuando los padres comienzan a darse cuenta que sus

hijos no se están desarrollando de la manera que deberían de acuerdo a sus talentos, habilidades y capacidades, que tienen desinterés o aburrimiento en el aula; o cuando los ven sumergidos en tantas tareas que le limitan su desarrollo emocional y social y el aprendizaje es ser una carga, es tiempo para detenerse y analizar lo que está ofreciendo el sistema escolar y evaluar si sus hijos están en el programa ideal para ellos”. En su opinión, uno de los retos iniciales de la educación en el hogar es superar la fase de temor e inseguridad que son capaces de hacerlo bien. Ellos creen que no hay mejores personas que deseen ver triunfar a los hijos que los padres, por lo que necesitan ser flexibles y pacientes con ellos mismos en el proceso. “Los padres deben estar conscientes que el primer año es un tiempo de probar lo que mejor funciona para sus hijos y aun así, el estudiante completará el año escolar con éxito. Un año escolar se puede completar en 4 a 6 meses, con un día escolar en casa de 4 horas. No hay necesidad de establecer expectativas idealistas”. “Enseñar en el hogar a nuestra hija fue muy divertido. Nos permitió crecer como una familia, y nos dio la oportunidad de crear recuerdos inolvidables en el que nuestro salón de clase fue el océano, o un pantano. Nuestra hija aprendió de los indios y tenía clases privadas con científicos, ingenieros, y médicos que le enseñaron a leer radiografías, disecar calamares, tiburones, búhos, y mucho más. Esas experiencias incomparables marcan la vida tanto del padre como del estudiante”.

Familia Esquivel

Yvette y Leonardo, junto a Valerie (15) y Andrés (11) han vivido en Doral por 5 años. Decidieron cambiar a sus hijos de una escuela pública chárter a un programa de escuela virtual el año pasado por petición de sus propios chicos: “Nuestra principal y única motivación fue que nuestros hijos estaban pidiendo que les permitiéramos estudiar desde casa. Ambos aprenden muy rápido y se aburrían fácilmente en la escuela. En casa son capaces de trabajar a su propio ritmo”, dice Yvette quien tomó el rol principal apoyar a sus hijos en sus estudios. Los Esquivel decidieron elegir el programa de la escuela virtual en lugar de comprar su currículo de estudios. Ellos querían dejar la puerta abierta para los futuros intereses de sus hijos. “Es posible que quieran volver a una escuela regular en el futuro para alcanzar metas académicas y deportivas, y con esta opción siguen tomando las mismas clases y pruebas exigidas por el estado a cualquier otra escuela pública en el condado”. Como cualquier familia que entra en un nuevo esquema, ellos tuvieron que hacer algunos cambios. Ajustaron su horario asegurando que disponían de 5-6 horas al día para estar presentes, apoyar y orientar a sus hijos, así como brindarles un espacio tranquilo, organizado y bien iluminado para el aprendizaje. Los padres que eligen la escuela virtual tienen que asegurarse además que sus hijos tengan el equipo adecuado, tales como computadoras, acceso a Internet y teléfono con el fin de completar sus tareas diarias, así como llevarlos

a la escuela local designada cuando necesiten tomar exámenes estandarizados. Las familias que se cambian a la educación desde casa están buscando beneficios concretos para sus hijos. Para la familia Esquivel el principal beneficio ha sido que sus chicos “están en casa y por lo tanto libres de malas influencias que son tan dominantes en las escuelas hoy día”. Ellos encuentran ventajoso que sus hijos puedan trabajar a su propio ritmo y que tengan libertad para elegir sus propios horarios, y finalmente han demostrado que “el tener tanto tiempo en casa en un ambiente más relajado y menos presionado une más a la familia”. El temor más común sobre la educación desde casa es la creencia que estos niños cuentan con limitadas oportunidades de socializar y que podría tener afectos en su desarrollo normal. Yvette considera que la falta de interacción social durante las horas de clase puede ser un reto mayor para las familias que han educado en casa durante la mayor parte de sus años escolares. “Mis hijos han escogido esta opción por sólo uno o dos años y por lo tanto siempre han estado en un ambiente escolar e incluso han estudiado en el extranjero. Sin embargo, durante estos años que de aprendizaje desde casa me he asegurado que estén involucrados en actividades extra-curriculares con interacción social con otros niños de su edad. Mi hijo está en un equipo de baloncesto competitivo y entre los juegos, las prácticas del equipo y entrenamiento, pasa tiempo con sus amigos y compañeros de equipo casi a diario. Mi hija se mantiene socialmente activa al pasar tiempo con los amigos de toda la vida los fines de semana y ha participado en tenis, clases de arte y es actualmente un miembro activo de las Girl Scouts.” “Una de las cosas que más disfrutamos es todo el tiempo extra que tenemos para pasar con nuestros hijos. Algunos días puede ser un reto ya que todos tenemos situaciones que surgen inesperadamente y aun así mis hijos pueden completar muchas horas de trabajo escolar cada día”. “En el año en que nuestros hijos han sido educados desde casa hemos notado un cambio positivo pues ahora son mucho más independientes. Han disfrutado a plenitud la experiencia y desean continuar al menos un año más. Ambos aman el aprendizaje en la comodidad de su hogar y poder trabajar a su ritmo”. Los Esquivel aconsejan a las familias que están considerando esta opción “conocer que esta es una forma educativa realista y disponible para ellos, pero que deben estudiar si es la más apropiada para su hijo. Ayuda mucho al éxito si el niño es independiente y automotivado”.

Familia Bermúdez

Idania y Alfred Bermúdez tienen dos hijos adultos. Su hijo Alfredo (23) era un adolescente cuando decidieron que estudiara en casa a causa de acoso escolar y presión de grupo. Lo inscribieron en el programa de escuela virtual ofrecido por el sistema de educación pública y completó con éxito tres años en casa. No fue una decisión fácil

Alfredo Bermudez para Idania y Alfred, pero era la mejor opción que tenían que apoyar a su hijo en ese momento. “La principal ventaja que teníamos de la educación en el hogar fue que nuestro hijo pudo concentrarse mejor en sus estudios pues ya no tenía la presión de otros estudiantes. Sin embargo, fue un reto debido a que educación a distancia requiere de mucha responsabilidad de los padres quienes deben asegurarse que sus hijos están siguiendo los programas, planificando sus clases, y programando las pruebas requeridas por el sistema escolar.”, dice Idania. Sobre la base de su propia experiencia, los Bermúdez consideran que este método tal vez no funcione para todas las familias, ya que es un programa que toma tiempo, atención y determinación. “Tanto los miembros de la familia como el estudiante deben estar bien enfocados para lograr el objetivo de completar los estudios.” A pesar de que Idania y Alfred no tenían experiencia previa en educación en el hogar, no sintieron miedo. Estaban convencidos que habían tomado la mejor decisión para el futuro de su hijo y no lo lamentan. De hecho, consideran que fue una experiencia muy positiva para Alfredo quien pudo concentrarse en sus estudios sin ser acosado. “Pudo crecer en sus habilidades sociales pasando tiempo de calidad con sus amigos después de la escuela y participando en actividades extracurriculares. También desarrolló un espíritu de auto-estudio que le permitió probar cosas nuevas, tales como tocar la guitarra que aprendió a tocar por sí mismo”. Esos años de escuela virtual realmente valieron la pena y Alfredo pudo regresar a la escuela regular para completar con éxito su último año de escuela secundaria. Actualmente asiste a Miami Dade Community College y él es un adulto joven muy responsable.

his past July 4th, America marked 240 years of freedom and democracy. Along with the fireworks and picnics, we saluted our servicemen and women whose sacrifices have kept us safe and free for the last two and a half centuries. But the many veterans who return home from the battlefield with crippling injuries need more than our appreciation. They need our help. Building Homes for Heroes is giving them that help. This wonderful non-profit organization builds custom homes for disabled veterans according to their needs. They also partner with financial institutions like JP Morgan Chase to pay off the home, eliminating a significant fiscal burden on the veterans’ families.

Last month, I had the honor and privilege of attending a Building Homes for Heroes event at Larios on the Beach restaurant in Miami Beach where I met with the group’s Founder and President Andy Pujol and several families of injured vets. Spending a rainy afternoon with these families brought nothing but sunshine to my heart. Their tremendous sense of gratitude was humbling, especially when I had the honor to present them the keys to their new homes and seeing them overcome with emotion and tears of joy. I’d like to take this opportunity to share the stories of three brave men who were seriously wounded in combat, and the amazing difference Building Homes for Heroes has made in their lives:

United States Marine Corps Sergeant Fernando Cabrera joined the Marine Corps in 2007 at the age of 23 from his native Puerto Rico. In August 2011, while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device was detonated and caused severe injuries to his head and face. Shrapnel entered the right side of

his head, causing a traumatic brain injury. The explosion fractured his right femur and damaged the soft right tissue of his right arm and elbow. After being treated on scene by Navy corpsmen, Sergeant Cabrera was transported by medevac to a forward operating base for treatment. He was then transported to Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany and then to the Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland. He underwent intense care for several months and was finally relocated to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tampa Bay for further treatment. In February 2012, he was transferred to the Wounded Warrior Battalion out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., for outpatient treatment and rehabilitation. Sergeant Cabrera, who also suffers from hearing and vision loss and post-traumatic stress disorder, was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, NATO ISAF Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He and his wife Sarahi and son Steven have a home in Kissimmee thanks to the combined efforts of Building Homes for Heroes and their corporate partners. United States Army Specialist Alberto Diaz (no relation) enlisted in the military in March 2012 out of Tampa Bay. Specialist Diaz excelled as a marksman, a skill he would put to use in the field of battle. On August 2, 2014, while deployed in Afghanistan, Specialist Diaz and his squad were on high alert due to recent insurgent attacks when the vehicle Specialist Diaz was riding on rolled over an improvised explosive device, detonating a catastrophic blast. Specialist Diaz was struck throughout his body. Unable to feel anything and rapidly losing blood, he lost consciousness. U.S. Army medics quickly attended to Specialist Diaz’ injuries and he was medevaced out. He was eventually transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland to begin his recovery. The blast caused severe injuries, including bleeding in the brain and nerve damage throughout his face. Specialist Diaz required complete right side facial reconstruction. He now suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, social anxiety, panic attacks, hearing loss and tremors. Badge and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. He and his wife Kayla, son Nathan and daughter Nevaeh now reside in the Tampa Bay/ St. Petersburgh area in their new home provided by Building Homes for Heroes. United States Army Warrant Officer Anthony Radetic enlisted in March 2000 seeking an aviation career as a helicopter pilot. While attending flight school in Ft. Rucker, Alab., Warrant Officer Radetic suffered a life-changing injury. On February 17, 2004, while on his way home from flight training on his motorcycle, he was involved in a near-fatal crash. He suffered a spinal cord injury at the C2, C3, T7 and T8 levels and was medevaced to the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta, Ga. Warrant Officer Radetic suffered paralyzing injuries to both legs. In 2010, the Army medically retired Warrant Officer Radetic as a Blackhawk pilot. He and his family now reside on Florida’s Gulf Coast in a custom-built, totally wheelchair-accessible home, thanks to the efforts of Building Homes for Heroes. The Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board’s mission is to promote, attract and solicit military-related events in Miami-Dade County and advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance, and to refer them to the appropriate agencies. Jóvenes de Simanof Siman Orquestra Foundation fueron seleccionados para asistir a The National Take a Stand Festival en New York.

The National Take a Stand Festival es un proyecto de LA Phil, Venezuela’s FundaMusical, Aspen Music Festival and School, Bard College, and Longy School of Music of Bard College conjuntamente con El Sistema USA, que agrupa estudiantes de 12 a 17 años de edad, de programas inspirados en El Sistema, provenientes de todos los Estados Unidos ofreciéndoles la oportunidad de aprender de músicos excepcionales y de ser embajadores de sus programas para promover el desarrollo de un modelo de enseñanza musical de excelencia y la creación de una comunidad nacional de ciudadanos músicos. En 2016 aproximadamente 200 jóvenes seleccionados entre cientos que audicionaron en todos los Estados Unidos, se reunirán en verano durante 7 días en NY y Aspen y en 2017 realizarán una presentación final dirigida por el director de la Filarmónica de Los Ángeles Gustavo Dudamel. Simanof envía orgullosamente a 4 de sus jóvenes, que fueron seleccionados para asistir este verano a New York.
