An ordinance to prevent Human Trafficking in Doral will be discussed on July 9th Council Meeting

ettina Rodriguez Aguilera has championed the attention to women’s issues since her first weeks as Councilwoman for the City of Doral. The passing of an ordinance in Miami-Dade to create safe houses for victims of human trafficking and the recent closing of two massage parlors in the area, has prompted her to submit a similar ordinance for Doral that will be discussed on First Reading on the July 9th Council meeting. “We have to let people know that Doral is not giving a blind eye to this. There is a resolution that passed in the State about massage parlors hours of operation and I would like it to happen here to avoid further issues”. The ordinance would also include the preparation of a resource guide, with information on the different programs offered through the State Attorney office and other NGOs, to avoid Human Trafficking and assist those affected. The involvement on the attention of women issues has been a lifelong commitment for Councilwoman Rodriguez Aguilera. In 1992 she started the New Women Entrepreneur Center, to help women start and develop businesses; in 1998 she developed the program ‘Mujer 2000’ to inform and empower Hispanic women. Her activism has taken her to Ghana, Lithuania and Ethiopia to assist on the development of Women Entrepreneur Centers and the first law against domestic violence in Albania. Since becoming Councilwoman of Doral, Rodriguez Aguilera has worked on the creation of the Women Leadership Program and the Commission on the Status of Women. Due to her initiative, the “UNite to end Violence against women” and the United Nations Orange Day Project were adopted in Doral, to increase awareness on sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence; it earned for the City of Doral a recognition by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. On July 25th, there will take place at City Hall a Symposium on Human Trafficking prevention, within the activities of Orange Day. “I do think we live in a global world and bringing it back to Doral; this is why passing these ordinances is important. We have to bring it local and that is what I have been doing. Violence against women is practically nothing in our city and in a way it is because people know we are not going to tolerate that here in any case.”

esde sus primeros días como Concejal de Doral, Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera se ha preocupado por atender los asuntos que afectan a las mujeres de la comunidad. Recientemente impulsa la creación de una ordenanza, la cual será sometida a primera discusión en la Sesión del Concejo del 9 de Julio, similar a las adoptadas por el Condado Miami-Dade y el Senado Estatal, sobre el control de horarios para centros de masaje y la creación de refugios para las víctimas del tráfico humano. Sobre la clausura de dos centros de masaje relacionados con este delito en Doral en las pasadas semanas, comenta: “Tenemos que ser firmes en mostrar que Doral no da la espalda a estas situaciones. Quiero proponer medidas al respecto en nuestra ciudad para evitar problemas en el futuro.” La ordenanza incluye la preparación de una guía de recursos para informar a la colectividad sobre los programas ofrecidos por el Fiscal Estatal y otras Organizaciones No Gubernamentales para evitar el tráfico humano y ayudar a las víctimas de este delito. La Concejal Rodríguez Aguilera ha tenido un compromiso de por vida con el apoyo a los derechos de las mujeres. En 1992 inició los Centros Empresariales para la Nueva Mujer, para ayudar a las mujeres a iniciar y desarrollar sus negocios. En 1998 desarrolló su programa ‘Mujer 2000’ para informar y educar a mujeres hispanas. Su activismo la ha llevado hasta Ghana, Lituania y Etiopía, para apoyar el desarrollo de Centros para Mujeres Empresarias y para la creación de la primera ley en contra de la violencia doméstica en Albania. Al convertirse en Concejal, impulsó la creación del Programa de Liderazgo Femenino y la Comisión sobre el Status de las Mujeres. Su apoyo a la iniciativa de las Naciones Unidas “UNidos contra la Violencia Domestica” y el Proyecto “Orange Day”, para prevenir el abuso sexual y otras formas de violencia, obtuvieron para la Ciudad de Doral el reconocimiento por parte del Secretario General de la ONU BanKi-Moon. En el marco de las actividades de Orange Day, el 25 de Julio tendrá lugar en Doral un Simposio sobre prevención del Tráfico Humano. “Vivimos en un mundo global y tenemos que incorporarlo a Doral. Pasar estas ordenanzas es importante para la ciudad. Tenemos que localizar estas iniciativas globales, ese ha sido nuestro trabajo. La violencia doméstica es prácticamente nula en nuestra ciudad y eso es en gran parte porque las personas saben que tenemos cero tolerancia a este tipo de delitos en nuestra comunidad.”

City of Doral Recognized by the Florida Recreation & Park Association for Excellence in Parks & Recreation Management

n June 16, 2014, the City of Doral Parks and Recreation Department received the prestigious “2014 FRPA Agency Excellence Award for Category IV (agencies serving populations between 35,000- 74,999)” from the Florida Recreation and Park Association. “We are exceptionally pleased to be honored with this prestigious award by the Florida Recreation and Park Association,” said Barbara Hernandez, City of Doral Parks and Recreation Director. “This amazing recognition is made possible because of the leadership and support we receive from our Mayor and Council and our dedicated staff.” The Florida Recreation and Park Association’s Agency Excellence Award is given annually to recognize and honor the state’s most outstanding community Park, Recreation and/or Leisure Service agencies for excellence in Parks and Recreation management. This award is the highest honor an agency can receive at the state level. Judging is based on each agency’s performance in a wide variety of areas including park development, athletic programming, leisure and cultural arts, fitness and wellness activities, promotion of programs, and citizen involvement. “The Award’s Committee was very impressed by all that has been accomplished by the City of Doral’s Parks and Recreation Department in its brief history. …And what do we do with the Garbage? Although representatives of the solid waste processing plant located in 97th Avenue in Doral and of the landfill of the city of Medley say they have systems to control odors emanating from both sites, residents and neighbors of the city insist that Doral smells like garbage. ach of the residents of Miami Dade County generates an average of 20 tons of waste per year. What could we do with this amount of waste without the existence of landfills and solid waste processing plants? We ask ourselves this question because the city of Doral seems to be surrounded by garbage. On the north, in the neighboring town of Medley, there is a 170 acre landfill managed by Waste Management Company, which receives more than 3 thousand tons of waste per day. Also, located on 97th Avenue in Doral is the recycling plant, Covanta Dade Renewable Energy Ltd. which processes 4 thousand 200 tons of waste daily. To this is added a flow of more than 600 trucks dumping trash every day making it impossible for Doral’s workers and residents not to perceive odors emanating from waste gases. However, the pressing need for the existence of these companies working the collection and processing of the waste we generate must also be recognized. Furthermore, take into account that the owners of houses near the landfills signed an agreement acknowledging and accepting the existence of them before moving in.

“If they want us to leave, stop producing garbage!” with this sentence, Thomas Eriksen, manager of Covanta, seeks to exemplify the importance of the labor of processing solid waste that they perform, noting that its role is to take the trash and convert it into energy. Eriksen explains that the plant administered by Covanta receives 1.2 million tons of waste per year from throughout all of Miami Dade, which then undergoes a combustion process that reduces it by 90 percent and converts it to ash. This ash is trying to be utilized as raw material for construction. “Not only do we get rid of the garbage generated by Miami residents, but we also convert it into energy. We recycle wastes and transform them into electricity for our own operations and for more than

Nevertheless, our doors and phone lines (305-593-7165) are open to receive any complaints or suggestions from the residents of this city, which I consider to be an excellent place to live and invest.” Without dismissing the importance of the residential growth in Doral, Eriksen notes that the plant has been located in 97th Avenue for more than 30 years, so when the planning and development of homes began everyone was aware of the existence of the plant and its waste processing function. To complete the explanation given by Eriksen, William “Hank” Clements, also Director of Covanta, gave us a tour of the facility during which he noted it is the only solid waste processing plant in Miami, and for now, the largest in the world, since soon it will be second to one being built in Palm Beach. Returning to the issue of the plant’s investment in controlling odors, Clements explained that on the weekends they employ an aromatic system that costs $390 for three gallons and they use 10 gallons, which comes out to $1,300 every weekend. “Building a plant like this would cost about $140 million, it’s maintenance costs $6 million, we generate more than 200 local jobs, which translates into $1.5 million in salaries and instead of wasting energy, we produce and save it when we dispose of solid wastes. This is really what sums up the importance of Covanta,” points out Clements.

but we have installed aromatic systems which help with this situation and are monitored daily,” states the manager of Waste Management. Assuming the responsibility of controlling the odors emanating from the handling of garbage, Gonzalez declares that the company maintains different spray systems at the landfill that have helped to mitigate the environmental impact caused by the waste arriving daily. “Three of the spray systems are in the southwest area of the landfill, operating through air pressure and blowing several types of fragrances, with a coverage of 300 feet at the top and 100 feet at sea level,” begins to explain Gonzalez as a means of demonstrating the scope of this odor control resource. Gonzalez points out that there is another aromatic

system in the northeast of the landfill which also operates on air pressure and sprays fragrances mixed with water. This is located 160 feet above sea level and covers an area of 300 feet. The third system is at the north end of the landfill and operates the same way as the second, with a reach of 1,500 feet.

The important thing is that we all be partakers of the solutions, since we are also all part of the problem: the less trash we generate and the more we recycle, the greater will be our collaboration to the maintenance of the environment. This is the position taken by neighbor, Hernan Rojas, who has met on several occasions with representatives of the Medley landfill. “Something important that the people of Waste Management

GOVERNMENTS AND NEIGHBORS

Given the persistent neighborhood complaints about the smell of garbage in the city of Doral, Mayor Luigi Boria announced that an Environment Committee has been formed. It is headed by environmentalist, Mongan Levy, who is already working on ways to decrease the impact caused by the handling and processing of waste produced in Miami. Boria added that as part of the initial steps taken by this committee and taking into account the large amount of organic food restaurants that exist in our city, is the suggestion of having a facility for the decomposition of organic waste to produce compost for the soil. The Mayor also stresses the importance of assigning a permanent staff to spray the most affected areas, not failing to mention what each of us can do to mitigate the odor of garbage: “the odor does not only come from the processing plant and the landfill, we must also be responsible for the smell coming from the garbage from our homes, so we must be aware of properly closing trash bags and disposing them appropriately.” For Luigi Boria, it is important that residents who feel affected file their complaints. As neighbors, in addition to taking an interest in improving the environment and quality of life in our city, it is also important that we assume our own responsibility in understanding that the processing plant of solid wastes and the landfill were already functioning when we decided to move to Doral. Rather than joining in on the unproductive complaints, our real intention should be to be part of the solution and enjoy the great advantages of living in this beautiful city.

We are also developing a traveling aromatic system to be mounted on a tractor that will cover areas that may require special attention.” Likewise, said Gonzalez, Waste Management has a system of inspections that is activated when receiving any neighborhood complaint. These are serviced immediately to minimize odors, for which they have 170 extraction wells that absorb the gases that generate bad odor before it reaches the atmosphere. Recalling the importance of this landfill, Gonzalez said it complies with all legal and environmental requirements at a local, state and federal level and is a component of the final county disposal system of waste generated in MiamiDade. He also points out that it seems inappropriate that the construction of residences were allowed in areas where landfills already existed, “that is really where the problem originates.”

Asumiendo responsabilidades

… Y que hacemos con la basura? A pesar de que los representantes de la planta procesadora de desechos sólidos ubicada en la 97 avenida de Doral y del vertedero de basura de la ciudad de Medley, aseguran que tienen sistemas para controlar los olores emanados de ambos sitios, los vecinos de la ciudad insisten en que Doral huele a basura. ada uno de los residentes del condado de Miami-Dade genera un promedio de 20 toneladas de basura al año. ¿Qué podríamos hacer con estos residuos sin la existencia de los vertederos sanitarios y de las plantas procesadoras de desechos sólidos? Nos hacemos esta pregunta porque la ciudad de Doral pareciera estar rodeada de basura, ya que por el norte, en la vecina localidad de Medley, tenemos un vertedero sanitario de 170 acres, manejado por la empresa Waste Management, que recibe más de 3 mil toneladas de basura al día y en la 97 avenida de Doral está ubicada la planta recicladora Covanta Dade Renewable Energy Ltd, que procesa diariamente 4 mil 200 toneladas de desechos sólidos. A esto se le suma un flujo de más de 600 camiones descargando basura todos los días, lo que hace imposible que los residentes y trabajadores de Doral no perciban los olores emanados por los gases provenientes de estos residuos, sin embargo, hay también que reconocer la imperante necesidad de la existencia de las empresas que trabajan con la recolección y procesamiento de los desechos que nosotros mismos generamos y tomar en cuenta que, los dueños de las viviendas aledañas a los basureros, firmaron un acuerdo de conformidad con la existencia de los mismos antes de mudarse.

“SI QUIEREN QUE NOS VAYAMOS, DEJEN DE PRODUCIR BASURA”

“Si quieren que nos vayamos, dejen de producir basura”, con esta frase Thomas Eriksen, manager de la empresa Covanta, trata de ejemplificar la importancia del trabajo de procesamiento de desechos sólidos que ellos realizan, acotando que su función es tomar la basura y convertirla en energía. Explica Eriksen que en la planta administrada por Covanta se reciben 1.2 millones de toneladas de basura al año de todo el condado de Miami-Dade, la cual es tratada por un proceso de combustión que logra reducirla en un 90 por ciento y convertirla en ceniza. Esta ceniza se está tratando de utilizar como materia prima para la construcción. “Nosotros no sólo nos deshacemos de la basu-

Thomas Eriksen ra generada por los residentes de Miami, sino que además la convertimos en energía, pues reciclamos los desechos y los transformamos en electricidad para nuestras operaciones y para 45 mil hogares más”, señala Eriksen. Para Eriksen, la empresa Covanta, que también recolecta al año 20 mil toneladas de aluminio y acero, es la responsable de que Miami esté limpia y considera que esto no es tomado en cuenta por quienes se quejan de los malos olores desprendidos por la basura, los cuales asegura mantener bajo control con sistemas aromatizantes. Adicionalmente, Covanta asegura descargar la basura herméticamente, “tenemos sistema de puertas automatizadas que se abren para que entren los camiones de basura y hasta que las puertas no se cierran totalmente, no se inicia el proceso de descarga de los desechos”. “Yo, que vivo en Doral, creo que ya son pocas las ocasiones en que huele a basura y nosotros hemos invertido grandes sumas de dinero para tratar de controlar este problema, sin embargo, nuestras puertas y líneas telefónicas (305-593 7165) están abiertas para recibir cualquier queja o sugerencia de los residentes de esta ciudad, la cual considero un excelente lugar para vivir y para invertir”. Sin descartar la importancia del crecimiento resi-

dencial de Doral, Eriksen señaló que la planta ha estado ubicada en la 97 avenida de Doral desde hace más de 30 años, por lo que cuando se empezó, impulsó y desarrolló la construcción de viviendas, todos sabían de la existencia de la planta y de su función de procesamiento de desechos. William “Hank” Clements, también director de Covanta, nos realizó un recorrido por las instalaciones de la planta, dentro del cual recalcó que es la única procesadora de desechos sólidos de Miami y por ahora, la más grande del mundo, pues dentro de poco será suplantada por la que se está construyendo en el condado de Palm Beach. Retomando el tema de la inversión que realiza la planta para controlar los olores, Clements explicó que, para los fines de semana, emplean un sistema aromatizante que cuesta 390 dólares cada tres galones y ellos emplean 10 galones, lo que se traduce en mil 300 dólares cada fin de semana. “Construir una planta como esta costaría unos 140 millones de dólares, su mantenimiento cuesta 6 millones de dólares, generamos más de 200 empleos locales, lo que se traduce en 1.5 millones de dólares invertidos en salarios y en lugar de gastar energía la producimos y la ahorramos cuando nos deshacemos de los desechos sólidos. Esto es, real-

mente, lo que resume la importancia de Covanta”, puntualizó Clements.

AROMATIZANDO A DORAL

Alex González representa a la empresa Waste Management, la cual administra al vertedero de basura de la vecina ciudad de Medley, que recibe a diario más de 3 mil toneladas de basura orgánica y asegura que al final de cada día de operación, todo el material de desecho que entró al relleno es cubierto con un mínimo de 6 pies de tierra. “Lógicamente, donde hay montañas de basura se producen gases que generan olores cuando llueve y de acuerdo al desplazamiento del viento,

Igualmente, acotó González, Waste Management cuenta con un sistema de inspecciones que se activa cuando reciben cualquier denuncia vecinal, la cual es atendida inmediatamente con el propósito de aminorar los olores, para lo cual también cuentan con 170 pozos de extracción que succionan los gases que generan el mal olor antes de que lleguen a la atmósfera. Al recordar la importancia de este relleno sanitario, González manifestó que el mismo cumple con todos los requisitos legales y ambientales a nivel local, estatal y federal y es un componente del sistema condal de disposición final de desechos generados en Miami-Dade. También señaló que le parece poco oportuno que se haya permitido la construcción de viviendas en zonas donde ya existía el vertedero, “ese es, realmente, el origen del problema”.

GOBIERNO Y VECINOS

Ante la persistente queja vecinal sobre el olor a basura en la ciudad de Doral, el alcalde Luigi Boria anunció que fue creado el Comité del Medio Ambiente, encabezado por el ambientalista Morgan Levy, que ya se encuentra trabajando en alternativas para disminuir el impacto causado por el tratamiento de los desechos que se producen en Miami. Como vecinos, además de interesarnos por mejorar el medio ambiente y calidad de vida de la ciudad, también es importante que asumamos nuestra propia responsabilidad al entender que el vertedero de basura y la planta de procesamiento de desechos sólidos ya estaban en funcionamiento cuando decidimos mudarnos a Doral, por lo que nuestra verdadera intención debe ser formar parte de las soluciones en lugar de sumarnos a las quejas improductivas y disfrutar de las grandes ventajas de vivir en esta hermosa ciudad.

Along with Councilwoman Rodriguez Aguilera, the South Florida delegation included State Senator Rene Garcia and Miami-Dade Public Defender Mr. Carlos J. Fourth of July, Independence Day

he celebration of the Fourth of July goes beyond watching a parade, hosting a Barbeque or getting together for the fireworks. Fourth of July, Independence Day, is the essence of being an American Citizen. It is the celebration of the birth of the project of a continent that became a nation; a country that would forever be an example for discipline, order, inclusiveness, faith, evolution and hope for those who seek refuge in its land. For those foreign born, becoming an American Citizen is a leap of faith and the end of a long and complicated journey. It implies in many cases learning a new language and in every case the effort of understanding how to function in a country where faith, morals, civic participation and social responsibility are strongly encouraged and valued, because it is the effort of each individual what makes a productive whole for the prosperity of everyone. The United States of America were founded by families seeking refuge to practice freely their religion. And since the Mayflower arrived, the majority of those that have come to this country have been pursuing freedom, justice, liberty and prosperity. This country has been generous to everyone that comes with good intentions, in the same measure that is has been harsh to those who represent a danger for the community. “I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free and I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN AMERICAN CITIZEN?

BEING GRATEFUL FOR BEING AMERICAN

It is important to keep an objective perspective when giving praise but also when criticizing. And when the object of that critic is your own homeland it is fundamental to consider all aspects and to have parameters to compare and contrast. When people come to live in the US, they do so because circumstances in this country have been more beneficial for them than those in their countries of origin. They have a reference to compare the many advantages the US have to offer and the majority are sincerely excited and grateful when they become Americans and are then entitled to get their passport and to vote. Therefore is really disappointing when those that were born here, that do not need to prove to anyone they are worthy of being called Americans, start taking for granted the many blessings they have and begin to criticize their government without participating in elections or civic movements to impulse the changes they want to happen. People do not know what they got until it is gone, and there are many who do not value the advantages and privileges of being American citizens until they have stepped foot outside the country. Before that they prefer for instance to deny their support to national sport teams or moreover they start praising other government systems and cultures without knowing the realities of those that live under those regimes. Being an American is a reason to be grateful,

Americans are sincere, generous people that are always willing to help others in need without asking anything in return. It is an attitude that is prevalent in many places around the country. Although historic circumstances might have made certain groups less open and willing to interact with foreigners and to embrace them as part of their community, it is the rule of law what makes tolerance and coexistence possible.

“Freedom; equality; the right to bear the flag; the right to vote; justice; prosperity, hope; opportunity; homeland”. Those are the meanings of American citizenship for many individuals, the opportunity to share their values to a collective that consider them important and that makes an effort to keep them alive and thriving. However, there is not one definition of what it means to be an American Citizen; there are at least fifty, one for every state. And there are many more for each of those millions of immigrants that take the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance every year, blending their traditions with those of America, making this the authentic world melting pot. Those are the millions of reasons to celebrate the Fourth of July.

La esencia de ser Ciudadano Americano

a celebración del Cuatro de Julio va más allá de ver el desfile, hacer una fiesta o ver los fuegos artificiales. El Cuatro de Julio, Día de la Independencia, es la esencia de ser Ciudadano Americano. Es la celebración del nacimiento de un proyecto, donde un continente se convirtió en nación; un país que por siempre ha sido ejemplo de disciplina, orden, inclusión, fe, evolución y esperanza para quienes vienen a refugiarse en estas tierras. Para los extranjeros, convertirse en Ciudadanos Americanos es un salto cuántico y representa la culminación de un camino con frecuencia largo y complicado. Para muchos representa aprender un nuevo idioma, y para todos implica el esfuerzo de aprender y comprender cómo funciona un país donde la fe y la moral, junto a la participación ciudadana y la responsabilidad social son apreciadas e incentivadas, pues es el conjunto de los logros y esfuerzos individuales lo que permite llevar productividad y progreso para todos.

Los EEUU se fundaron con las familias que llegaron en el Mayflower, buscando refugio en el nuevo continente para practicar su religión libremente. Desde entonces, la mayoría de quienes llegan a estas tierras lo hacen en la búsqueda de la libertad, justicia y prosperidad. Este país es sumamente generoso con todos los que vienen con buenas intenciones, en la misma medida que es implacable con quienes representan un peligro para la comunidad. Este país te da la bienvenida y te atrapa. Hace que lo ames profundamente y que decididamente te comprometas a hacer todo lo posible para progresar y ser el mejor en tu ámbito. Tan es así, que muchos deciden quedarse a pesar de no tener estatus migratorio vigente. Como los EEUU es la tierra de las oportunidades, donde todo es posible, eso en muchos casos causa la envidia de muchos que no tienen tantas ventajas que ofrecer a sus ciudadanos. En los EEUU los sueños se hacen realidad para quienes trabajan duro por conseguirlos. Aquí las leyes se obedecen y se hacen cumplir. Se lucha por la reivindicación de derechos y una vez obtenidos se respetan y defienden. Los errores se corrigen

Es importante mantener una perspectiva objetiva tanto al alabar como al criticar, sobre todo cuando el objeto de ello es el propio país. En ese caso es fundamental considerar todos los aspectos y buscar parámetros que permitan comparar para que las opiniones tengan importancia y validez. Cuando las personas vienen a vivir en EEUU, lo hacen porque las circunstancias aquí son mejores que en sus países de origen. De ese modo tienen punto de comparación y descubren las innumerables ventajas que este país tiene para ofrecer, y la mayoría esta sinceramente emocionada y agradecida cuando se convierten en ciudadanos Americanos y por fin pueden votar y tener el pasaporte. Estas cosas sencillas son hitos en las vidas de quienes han luchado por obtenerlas. Por ello es tan decepcionante ver a personas que han nacido aquí, que no tienen que probarle a nadie que son merecedores de la ciudadanía, cuando hacen criticas al país sin base y sin preparación, y además no participan en las elecciones ni en movimientos cívicos que puedan generar los cambios que desean. Muchos no saben lo que tienen hasta que lo pierden y por lo tanto no dan valor a la calidad de vida y los privilegios y ventajas que tienen los ciudadanos Americanos hasta que visitan otros países. Aun cuando circunstancias históricas hayan llevado a ciertos grupos a tener menor amplitud en su interacción con extranjeros y su asimilación a la comunidad, las leyes hacen que la tolerancia se imponga y que la coexistencia sea posible.

“Libertad, Igualdad; El derecho a usar la bandera: el derecho al voto; justicia, prosperidad, seguridad, esperanza, oportunidad, patria.” Esos fueron varios de los significados que individuos dieron como significados de la Ciudadanía Americana, agregando que la consideran como la oportunidad de compartir sus valores con un colectivo que los considera importantes y que hace un esfuerzo para ayudarles a sobrevivir y progresar. No existe sin embargo una única definición de lo que es un Ciudadano Americano; hay al menos cincuenta definiciones, una por cada estado. Y hay muchas más, una por cada uno de esos millones de inmigrantes que son naturalizados anualmente en este país, mezclando así oficialmente sus tradiciones y costumbres con las de los Americanos, haciendo de los EEUU el crisol de todas las culturas. Esas son las millones de razones para celebrar con alegría el Cuatro de Julio.

he right to vote is the essence of democracy, “the rule of the people”. It is what differentiates a free society from one where tyranny and oppression undermine the rights of their citizens. Societies where individuals voluntarily refrain of exercising their right to vote eventually end up suffering the consequences of their indolent citizens; there are plenty of examples in Latin American countries where citizens did not vote on elections to end up being governed by a system they would not have chosen. That is why citizen’s participation is fundamental for the success and thriving of a community.

Other very important way a non-voting resident can help is by being aware and informed of the decisions that will take place in the upcoming elections and prompting their neighbors and friends who are American Citizens to register and exercise their right to vote. Moreover, in case of American born or naturalized children who just turned 18, it is very important to emphasize to them their right to register as electors, even if they are moving out of Florida for college, because no matter if they are attending school in other places, Doral is still their legal residence and they have the right and duty to voice their opinion. In case they are not in the city at the time of the elections they have to request and send an absentee ballot to make their vote count.

UPCOMING ELECTIONS AND IMPACT IN DORAL

In Doral, there are 18,718 registered voters to this date, representing an increment of 10% over the electoral universe that selected the current City Council in 2012; In a population of 50,213 that means a mere 37% of those that live in Doral have the power to choose who is going to be in charge of deciding how the City is run and how their taxes are invested. It is a huge responsibility; each vote is worth the opinion of 2.5 residents. Doral is a city where many are still navigating the complicated waters of the American Immigration System and have yet to obtain the coveted naturalization certificate, gaining with it the full rights and duties of American Citizens, the greatest of which is the right to vote. However, even if a Doral resident is not vested to vote, can still support a candidate of their preference with their time or treasure, and also can voice their opinions on City Council meetings or by becoming

On August 26th there will be Primary elections and the ballot will include the Charter Amendments for the City of Doral. Therefore it is fundamental that Doral residents get informed and participate massively on this process, to ensure that the main rules of government for the city continue reflecting the values and vision of all residents. It does not matter whether you can or cannot vote. Get informed of the Charter amendments proposed1, understand them and discuss them with your friends and neighbors who will cast a ballot. Several partisan and non-partisan State and County wide offices will be voted on the primary, none of them affecting Doral. There have been changes on the locations of precincts for the Primary election, therefore it is important to verify that information before August 26th on the Departments of Elections website http:// www.miamidade.gov/elections/regist-status.asp Nonetheless, this is the best moment to register for voting or for updating the registration information. The

deadline for that is July 28th. It can be done online, by picking up the registration form at the post office, public library or driver’s licenses office and sending it by mail or by visiting in person the MiamiDade Elections Department, located in 2700 NW 87th Avenue. They are nearby. It is fast and easy. No excuses!

Last day for registering for the Primary Election is July 28th 1. Only U.S. citizens (born or naturalized) 18 years or older can vote. 2. l derecho al voto es la esencia de la democracia, “el poder del pueblo”. Es lo que marca la diferencia entre las sociedades libres y aquellas donde la opresión y la tiranía vulneran los derechos de sus ciudadanos. Cuando los individuos se abstienen voluntariamente de ejercer su derecho al voto, terminan sufriendo las consecuencias de su indolencia ciudadana. Hay incontables ejemplos en América Latina donde la constante abstención electoral terminó llevando a los países a sistemas con los cuales los ciudadanos no estaban de acuerdo. Al no votar pusieron en manos de otros el derecho a decidir el destino de todos. Por ello la participación ciudadana es fundamental para el éxito y progreso de las comunidades. En Doral hay 18,718 votantes registrados a la fecha. Esto representa un incremento del 10% sobre el universo electoral que decidió sobre los representantes al Concejo Municipal en 2012. Dentro de una población de 50,213 habitantes, esto significa que apenas el 37% de quienes viven en Doral tienen el poder de decidir quiénes estarán a cargo de decidir cómo se funciona la ciudad y qué hacer con los impuestos de todos. Es una gran responsabilidad; cada voto vale por la opinión de 2.5 residentes. Doral es una ciudad donde muchos están todavía navegando las complejas aguas del Sistema de Inmigración y aún no han obtenido el ansiado Certificado de Naturalización y con él, los derechos y deberes de los Ciudadanos Americanos, de los cuales el mayor de todos es el derecho al voto. ummer is here, and with it comes a big question, what am I going to do during summer? Most incoming high school students get a little worried about where they can do their community service hours during their high school years. I’ve had many people come up to me trying to get advice on where they can volunteer and get the community service hours they need in order to graduate. One of the first advices I give is to never leave their hours for last minute. The sooner you get them done, the less you have to worry about. When I first heard about having to do community service hours, I started searching options right away. For those who don’t know the City of Doral have excellent volunteer opportunities with the parks and recreation department. The program is called “Students in Action” in which you can volunteer at the parks, events such as Fourth of July, among many other events hosted by our city. To apply for this program visit the city’s website, https://www.cityofdoral.com, follow the link to the volunteers section, print it and submit it at Morgan Levy park. Now, if you want to explore different opportunities, you can volunteer at hospitals, pet shelters, even elderly care centers. How about playing BINGO with some old folks at a nursing home, sounds like fun. Hospitals are always a good way to do community service hours, not only will you be obtaining hours but you will also be helping the community. Another opportunity to cooperate with the community is by feeding the homeless. Other opportunities include volunteering at art and music festivals. Several summer camps always need an extra help and recruit as many volunteers possible, so take advantage of these opportunities. If you like playing and taking care of pets, consider volunteering at a pet shelter. You can help a furry friend

get adopted of just play with them for a little while. The Miami-Dade Animal Services is always looking for volunteers, but hurry up and sign up because available spots will fill up fast. One of the hospitals where you can look into is Miami Children’s Hospital which is always searching for new volunteers who can put a smile on their patients face. There is however plenty of hospitals that are in search of volunteers, so try checking out the closest hospital to you. We all love going to art and music festivals, so how about going for free and helping out at the same time? Different festivals such as the Coconut Grove art festival held every year offer high school and college students the opportunity to volunteer with them during the whole weekend. Another opportunity comes in handy during the famous color run races. Several times the color run races have been done in Miami and in Ft. Lauderdale, check every now and then their website for schedules. If you like film, check out the Miami International Film Festival, which also offers students several opportunities to community service. Of course we cannot leave out the Miami Book Fair also held once a year. Whether you are volunteering for school or just for fun, keep in mind some students accumulate communityservice hours because it’s a requirement for graduation or scholarships. Not only is community service fun and rewarding, it also looks great on a resume or college application. The benefits of helping others or working with a worthy cause can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your lifetime. Volunteering helps you develop a heart for giving. Discover the wider world around you. Foster meaningful relationships. Always remember that the more hours you have, the better it is for you. Start as early as possible and don’t leave it for last minute.

With that purpose in mind, last June 7th, the City of Doral Police held their first adult bike event: “Pedal with Police”, a ride that started at J.C. Bermudez Park and included a 15-mile ride throughout the City. Approximately 300 cyclists participated in the

event which took about 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete. About 12 bike patrol officers rode along with the cyclists, Sergeant P. Correa, Sergeant J. Delapaz, Officer L. Martinez and other police officers. Mr. Angel Gonzalez a cyclist, and Florida Pro Cycle owner, Mr. Luis Chacin were instrumental in organizing the event with the police. Florida Pro Cycle provided refreshments and a bike clinic on repairing a flat tire to all participants. “The purpose of the event was to promote bike safety, show police support to our riders, and more

importantly, to educate the riders on bike traffic laws.” said Officer Noel Feliciano. “This is an initiative supported by our Chief of Police, Richard Blom. A special thanks goes out to Parks and Recreations, Ms. Barbie Hernandez and Mr. Maruricio Narvaez for their support. Esta columna les mantiene al tanto de lo que nuestros oficiales hacen a diario para alcanzar su objetivo: mantener la seguridad pública, así como los diferentes servicios y eventos que llevan a cabo a fin de informar, educar y proteger a todos los residentes. Con ese propósito en mente, el pasado 07 de junio, la Ciudad de Policía de Doral celebró su primer evento de ciclismo para adultos: “Pedaleando con la Policía”, con un recorrido que comenzó en el J.C.

Bermúdez Park e incluyo un trayecto de 15 millas a través de las principales calles de la ciudad. Aproximadamente 300 ciclistas participaron en este evento que tardó alrededor de 1 hora y 20 minutos en completarse. Alrededor de 12 oficiales de patrulla acompañaron a los ciclistas usando sus propias bicicletas entre ellos los oficiales: Sargento P. Correa, Sargento J. Delapaz, Oficial L. Martínez y otros agentes de la policía. El Sr. Ángel González, ciclista y propietario de Florida Pro Cycle y el Sr. Luis Chacín fueron fundamentales en la organización del evento junto a la policía. Florida Pro Cycle proporcionó refrescos y una clínica de reparación de llantas a todos los participantes. “El propósito del evento fue promover la seguridad

ola a todos nuevamente, espero que estén disfrutando los primeros días de verano, a pesar de las lluvias. En este articulo les voy hablar de los alimentos funcionales o súper dotados, que en ingles llamamos: “Superfoods”. Ya he hablado de algunos anteriormente, pero ahora, voy a extender el tema y les diré cuales son los más potentes; es decir los que vienen con mayor valor nutritivo para que los tengas en tu cocina y optimices aún mas tu salud. Estos famosos “Superfoods” han estado a la moda estos últimos tiempos, debido a sus grandes beneficios como el de ayudar al cuerpo a curar enfermedades y nutrirse de una manera óptima con menos comida. Esto se debe a su alto valor nutritivo, también quitan el cansancio, combaten el stress, mejoran la piel, previenen y tratan enfermedades, nos vuelven energizados y nos mantienen con mayor concentración y energía a la hora de hacer nuestros ejercicios y a la hora de darle cara a nuestras responsabilidades de todos los días. Algunos de ellos también son afrodisíacos. En otras palabras, hay de todo y para todos. Recordemos que nunca podemos conformarnos con estar simplemente saludables, tenemos que estar óptimos. Como ya saben “el Éxito” se alcanza siempre buscando lo mejor como una evolución constante yendo siempre para adelante. Lo mismo pasa con la salud, siempre tenemos que querer estar a nuestro máximo, nutrirnos de la mejor manera, probar nuevos alimentos nutritivos que optimicen nuestra salud, hacer nuevos ejercicios, probar cosas diferentes en todos los sentidos. Es igual con tu salud y las elecciones que hagas para ella. Si siempre vas detrás de lo mejor, estarás siempre sano, lleno de energía y listo para grandes oportunidades que tiene la vida para ti. Todo esto, acompañado de menos visitas al doctor, que es igual a más dinero ahorrado, aparte de sentirnos felices y vitalizados. Los “Superfoods,” también te ayudaran a tener más creatividad, suena extraño pero es verdad. Estos alimentos nos nutren el cuerpo y la mente, es decir la estimulan volviéndote aun más pensante y ágil. Tendrás mayor retención de memoria y claridad mental. Fortaleciendo nuestros dones (las cosas que hacemos con excelencia sin tratar demasiado y de

forma natural), tendremos más inspiración y ganas de hacer nuestros labores y actividades diarias, podremos movernos más rápido, que a la larga termina con la vagancia, o a posponer las cosas que nos cuesta hacer en el momento, ya que nos dará agilidad mental y energía = poder de decisión y acción.. Además, nos ayudarán a tener mayor seguridad. ¿Porque es esto? Por varias razones. Nos brindarán más energía lo cual te da motivación, aparte tu estado de ánimo estará estable ya que estos alimentos nos ayudan a regular lo químicos en el cerebro para lograr sentirte bien todo el día. No tendrás espacio para sentirte mal o lamentarte de algún incidente ya que tu mente estará enfocada en lo positivo y en lo que realmente quieres lograr. A la vez, que optimizarán tu metabolismo, regulan tus hormonas y podrán ayudarte a combatir el estrés, lo que quiere decir menos cortisol y adrenalina en tu torrente sanguíneo lo que iguala reducción de peso, y grasa corporal y ansiedad mejor estado de salud= felicidad. Entonces comencemos, (como ya les he hablado del Aceite de Coco, la maravillosa Maca, y el Delicioso súper poderoso Salmón, no se les pondré en la lista pero ya deben saber que no pueden faltar lista de alimentos). Quinua: Este peculiar grano que esta tan de moda viene de Perú, contiene todo lo que necesitas en una comida. Tiene proteína, Omega 3, Zinc, Selenio, Vitamina E y ayuda a prevenir el riesgo de diabetes entre otras enfermedades. Yo lo como con vegetales y lo condimento con especies y me encanta. Tu puedes comértelo con pescado o pollito y vegetales para hacer una comida perfecta. Bayas de Goji-Goji Berries: Estas son también llamadas las bayas de la felicidad, ya que sientan tan bien al organismo. ¿Que contienen?..O más bien que no tienen. Tienen Beta caróteno, Vita-

mina C, B1, B2, B6, E, Minerales, Antioxidantes, Aminoácidos, Triptófano, Zinc, Hierro, Calcio, Selenio, Fósforo. Quizá aun me faltan pero mejor descúbranlo ustedes (Ojo, si tienes alergia al polen no las debes de consumir o si estas tomando medicamentos para la diabetes). Otra cosa, consúmelas por la mañana ya que dan bastante energía que puede causar insomnio. Cacao (60%-90%): Sabias que de todos los antioxidantes, por ahora el cacao, es el más potente, y más poderoso que el vino tinto, el té verde, el famoso açai, las bayas, todos juntos. Wow!!! Es por eso, que nunca falta en día, estimula la mente, regula la presión arterial, brinda energía, contiene vitamina E, Hierro, Magnesio, Cromo, Calcio, Potasio, Zinc, y quizá me faltan algunos. Aguacate: A que no sabías que el aguacate tiene proteína y vitamina C, y no solo eso tiene Omega 3 y mucho Potasio para aquellos atletas. Puedes comértelo en ensaladas o con huevito por la mañana. Yo lo llamo alimento de la belleza. Hasta me lo pongo en la cara para mascarillas o en el cabello para hidratarlo. Huevo: Ah que no se lo imaginaron… Verdad! Este chiquitín, es una excelente opción para bajar de peso, debido a su alto contenido de calcio, fósforo, zinc, tiamina, B6, B12, vitaminas A, D y E. Son extremadamente saludables y con vegetales son una excelente manera de empezar tu día. Yogurt griego-Greek yogurt: este yogurt no es como todos, este tiene mayor cantidad de proteína y menos azúcar que el yogurt regular también contiene calcio, proteína, zinc, y vitaminas B6 B12. Yo lo como por papaya y semillas de chía cuando quiero cambiar mi desayuno. Vístelo como quieras, puedes agregarle bayas de goji y almendras y tienes una súper comida fabulosa.

any of our U.S. service members are wounded or die while serving our country; others struggle more when they come back. Once they are here, they encounter situations they weren’t trained to handle- unemployment, homelessness, discrimination, mistreatment and other difficulties. This week the Associated Press reported that as of Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at least 2,185 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion in late 2001. Of those, 1,813 have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action and at least 133 more have died outside of Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Also, according to the Defense Department, since the start of this U.S. military operation 19,798 U.S. service members have been wounded as a result of hostile action. This staggering numbers account for only one military operation. Our military men and women and their families are facing enough hardship while defending our freedom, it is up to all of us to make show our gratitude and care for them as they return. In Miami-Dade County we created the Military Affairs Board (MAB), for the specific purpose to advocate on behalf of as advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance. The MAB is also committed to promote, attract and solicit military activities in Miami-Dade County. We have been working for a better quality of life for our true heroes- our men and women of the military, and their families, who have all sacrificed so much for us. Last year, we placed great effort in righting a wrong that had been committed against our Vietnam Veterans who 50 years before had anything but a proper welcome home. Instead, many of them were received with insults and aggression, instead of being received with honor. On November 8, 2013 we were able to come together as a community and provide our Vietnam-Era veterans with a dignified symbolic ‘welcome back’ parade down Flagler Street in downtown Miami. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate their service and the service of every other veteran, with a beautiful ticker tape parade that culminated in a concert at Bayfront Park. This event, the Golden Vete-

rans Parade, exhibited our determination as a community to unite in favor of our military. Last month, the Military Affairs Board and the City of North Miami Beach jointly presented the screening of the Documentary that was filmed during and around the Golden Veterans Parade. This documentary, produced by Miami-Dade County’s Community Information & Outreach Department, includes in-depth interviews with local Vietnam Veterans as well as the creation and execution of the parade in their honor. The documentary was screened at the Littman Theater in the City of North Miami Beach on Thursday, May 29th, 2014 at 7 pm. Prior to the viewing of the documentary, there were several proclamations and certificates of appreciation given. NMB Councilwoman Barbara Kramer presented George Gabriel with a proclamation for his military service. Virginia Gardens Councilman Richard Block presented Russell Hults with a proclamation for his military service. Cutler Bay Mayor Ed MacDougall presented John Sykes with a proclamation for his military service. Doral Mayor Luigi Boria presented Leonel Ochoa with a proclamation for his military service. Medley Mayor Roberto Martell presented the MAB with a proclamation for organizing the Golden Veterans Parade. Commissioner José “Pepe” Díaz presented to the documentary staff, certificates of appreciation for a job well done. Among tears and smiles, the “Miami-Dade Golden

Veterans: 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War” Documentary showcased our commitment as a unified community to our service men and women. Many of our U.S. service members die or get wounded during our military operations, but we will continue to work hard to make their return and their life post-service a dignified life. I am certain that together we can embrace their legacy of courage, extend a welcoming hand and positively impact history. Doral inauguró tres nuevos Trolleys El pasado 18 de junio, el Alcalde y el Concejo de la Ciudad de Doral incorporó tres nuevas unidades a su flota de trolleys para las rutas 1 y 3, con el objetivo de facilitar el transporte urbano en Doral. El monto de la inversión para la adquisición de los nuevos Trolleys fue de 500.000 dólares, de los cuales el 20% fue cubierto por la alcaldía de Doral, gracias al subsidio de South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA). Uno de los Trolleys se añadirá a la ruta 1, permitiendo la frecuencia del servicio cada 20 minutos durante los

períodos pico entre semana. El segundo se añadirá a la ruta 3, permitiendo mayor afluencia del servicio cada 30 minutos durante los días de semana, y el tercer trolley proporcionará un alivio adicional a la flota existente para fines de mantenimiento. On June 19, the Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center celebrated their groundbreaking for their future location in Doral, FL. The event brought together the Project Owners & staff. The ceremony included brief remarks and recognitions from Mr. Luigi Boria, Mayor City of Doral, Jose “Pepe” Diaz, County Commissioner for Miami-Dade and Mr. Larry K. Williams, President/CEO of the Beacon Council. Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center will add an estimated 22 jobs and $8.35 million in capital investment within three years to Miami-Dade County. The company was founded in 2007 and currently has a center in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The new facility will be the first in Florida to feature the latest TomoTherapy Hi-Art Treatment System, TomoTherapy HDA, the most integrated, advanced systems for comprehensive cancer treatment that is available today. By precisely targeting and attacking cancer cells, TomoTherapy Hi-Art effectively treats hard-to-reach, complex tumors while decreasing secondary side effects caused by standard radiation treatments.

MDFR Participates in the Launch of a New Public Awareness Campaign for a Safe Haven for Newborns

The Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Department (MDFR) joined, Nick Silverio, founder of A Save Haven for Newborns, Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera, Sen. Rene Garcia and other state and community leaders for the launch a new public awareness campaign, which aims at informing pregnant young women giving birth to unwanted newborn babies about a last resort option. If a baby is seven days old or less, unharmed and left with a staff member at a “Safe Haven” hospital or fire station, there will be no questions asked and surrendering mothers can be sure

to remain free from fear of judgment or persecution. Through education and public awareness A Safe Haven for Newborns has saved 213 babies from abandonment and possible death. The organization, based here in Miami, is spreading its message throughout Florida with a new public awareness campaign through billboards, many donated by the Florida Outdoor Advertising Association (FOAA), new public service announcements, community presentations and a social media campaign.

Exhibición de Arte Plástico en Doral Farmers Market Bajo el soporte de Doral Arts Coalition y The Artist Portfolio Workshop Museum, se realizó la exposición de arte, el pasado domingo 22 de junio. La misma contó con artistas de varias nacionalidades que lograron cautivar con sus obras a cada uno de los asistentes. El artista cubano americano Roy Rodríguez, la gran querida Sara Alfaro, el nicaragüense Edwin Mejía, el puertorriqueño Juan Ubaldo Arias, la colombiana Dora Farfan, y la venezolana Isbelia Cavalieri, fueron los protagonistas de esta exposición.

La exhibición que se realizó en el Doral Farmers Market, ubicado en el 9659 NW 41 St, en Doral tuvo una gran acogida, y lo más importante, es que sirvió como trampolín a que se hagan nuevas exposiciones en la calle y animan a la ciudad a seguir promoviendo y desarrollando el arte y la cultura en Doral. Muy pronto le comunicaremos sobre la próxima exhibición de arte!!!
