ice Mayor Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera and the City of Doral Council approve resolution in support of the United Nation’s Secretary General, Ban Ki- Moon’s UNiTE Campaign to end violence against Women and Girls worldwide. The Resolution also supports the “Safe Cities” Orange Day initiative which will be recognized on October 25, 2013, by wearing orange or displaying an orange ribbon. We encourage our local community to participate and support this global cause. In addition, Vice Mayor Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera has been named Global Ambassador by Proudly UNITE to End Violence against Women. A global mobilization platform focused on ending violence against women and girls. The City of Doral Council encourages other cities to join the City of Doral in supporting the efforts made by governments and agencies worldwide to reduce violence against women

and girls. “I am honored to be named Global Ambassador to Proudly Unite to End Violence against Women and support the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General’s UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls, as well as, Safe Cities Orange Day whom have all come together in a worldwide effort to bring local cities to the forefront of the plight of women and young girls’ rights and freedoms worldwide.” Said Vice Mayor Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera. Boria vs. Carollo - Round 2 Newsroom

et again, the Doral Council meeting made news. Not because the city is doing wonderful things for its residents, or because we have won awards for good governance or “best city to live in the U.S.” It is because there has been another feud, this time between Manager Joe Carollo and a Venezuelan investor, the now famous Juan Carlos Tovar, a friend of the Mayor, his family and former client. Tovar filed a police report against the Manager for alleged racism and violence following the meeting on Wednesday. Few hours after the incident, Mayor Luigi Boria called for another Special Meeting to take place on Monday, September 30th with a variety of items on the agenda: from Downtown Doral Park to surveillance cameras. But the most important item was in reference to a letter concerning City Manager Joe Carollo. Doral may be facing a lawsuit. The city has received a letter signed by Tovar’s lawyer, Jesus Suarez, asking the City Clerk to retain all records, including any videos, as possible evidence of what transpired Wednesday night. Failure to do so, the letter states, “could result in the impermissible and unlawful spoliation of evidence.” This opens more questions. What would you do if you are Doral Police Chief Bloom? Should a Police Department investigate its own boss? Wouldn’t it be better to ask the County Police to step in or the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)? The special meeting scheduled for 9:30am was delayed for 30 minutes and despite the presence of several Doral residents and media representatives, the meeting was cancelled due to a lack of quorum. Besides Mayor Luigi Boria, only Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz was present. But what the Mayor requested before the meeting was adjourned tells us the relationship between the Mayor and the Manager is not getting any better. He wants the Doral council to evaluate the Manager’s performance, only nine months after becoming the city manager. The Mayor told us if the Manager “is doing a good job, then we would like him to continue doing it, if not, then things will need to be corrected,” he added. As we have stated before on this column, when Boria and Carollo teamed up to become Doral’s new Mayor and Manager, Boria needed Carollo’s political expertise and experience. And many thought this would be a way for Carollo to come

back after many years of absence into the public arena. The September 27th Doral meeting also dealt with a very important item, the city’s budget which kicks in starting October 1st. As we know, the manager decided to reduce the employees’ benefits mid-year, something that according to him may end up saving hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars down the road. Given the financial health of some municipalities, Carollo is not off the mark. In the end, no city is isolated. News headlines about cities in trouble keep making national news. Detroit’s bankruptcy and Miami’s dispute with the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) are just a few.

It was in an atmosphere of government corruption during his years in the city of Miami where the city manager learned the ropes to avoid it. So far, he has never been accused of corruption or unethical conduct. But now he’s walking on a mine field. Mayor Boria wants to evaluate his performance which undoubtedly is linked to what happened with Mr. Tovar. Carollo is also confronting accusations of racism, violence and calling an investor “venezolano de mier…” Knowing that Mr. Carollo is married to a Venezuelan, we honestly doubt he referred to Venezuelans in that way. But when it comes to

“chavistas”, that may be a different story. And talking about chavistas, they say crazy people sometimes tell the truth. We are far from agreeing with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, but what he said last week may not be too far from reality. During a TV interview Maduro stated that Miami is a refuge for corrupt people from Venezuela and the rest of Latin America. Obviously, that’s not totally true and ironically, even chavistas are coming to the US to invest here and maybe laundry many illegal businesses. We don’t know how this new chapter in Doral is going to end. What we know is that almost a year after Mayor Boria won the election, there has not been a real progress or important benchmark accomplished at the city of Doral. The Mayor continues to acquire more and more Spanish newspapers while having close friends at the helm. In more than one occasion, we’ve heard that Mayor Boria himself went to the Ethics Commission to ask for an opinion on whether or not he should vote on the Grand Floridian land issue. What he fails to say is that the investigation by the Commission was triggered by complaints, not necessarily because of his “good will.” In addition, the Ethics Commission did find a conflict of interest as stated in a memorandum by the Commission: “…a conflict of interest existed from May 18, 2012 when funds started passing from the mayor, through his children, to US Century Bank to purchase their half-interest in vacant land.” And the memorandum continues. “The conflict continued to exist: through the summer and into the fall of 2012, when Luigi Boria resigned his Doral City Council seat to run for mayor; in October 2012, when representatives of Grand Floridian at Doral LLC filed the initial request with the Doral planning department (…)” and all through May of this year, when Boria’s children passed their 1.9 million share toward the final closing costs on the $4 million parcel. Yes, there was a conflict of interest. And the Mayor correctly recused himself from voting. What the Mayor doesn’t like to talk about is that the Commission started investigating this case in March of 2013 after receiving several complaints. During this ten year anniversary of Doral, a lot of energy and time has been wasted in political fights, while us- the taxpayers- wonder what the City is going to do regarding traffic, flooding and a myriad of other problems piling up at city hall. Stay tuned. This Doral saga doesn’t seem to have an end in sight.

Zoning Meeting Takes a Controversial Turn In the Zoning Meeting held on September 25, 2013, at the Government Center in the City of Doral should have been a quiet meeting with a very light agenda, but that was not the case at all. The Zoning Meeting took a controversial turn regarding the Grand Floridian Project which Mayor Luigi Boria has been under investigation by the Ethics Committee. First let us look at some of the important items that were addressed at the meeting that affect our community.

Items for Discussion Use of the City of Doral Logo

The use of the City of Doral Logo and the City of Doral seal were discussed. Ciudad Doral Newspaper brought forth an offer to use the City of Doral Logo in a visitor’s guide that they wanted to publish. The Council addressed this issue stating that the City of Doral Logo and Seal could not be used without the approval of the Council. In addition, the Council needed to be certain that the logo and/or seal were being properly used and not for self-promotion of a business. Councilwoman Ruiz stated and Vice Mayor Rodriguez Aguilera agreed that they had seen the seal used without permission or approval of the council. All council members agreed that this item would be discussed in further details and guidelines would be set.

Golden Veterans Parade

Councilwoman Ruiz brought forth a resolution to support Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz and the Military Advisory Board in their efforts to hold a parade on November 8, 2013, “Golden Veterans Parade” honoring the 50th Anniversary Commemoration where South Florida will welcome back Vietnam Veterans and all. In addition a special salute to the Bay of Pigs Veterans many of whom are also Vietnam Veterans will be done.

The Grand Floridian Saga The Mayor recuses himself from the Agenda item and the voting of said item. The Ethics Committee did say that the Mayor had not done anything unethical to date, however, the Mayor should recuse himself nonetheless from any items that pertain to The Grand Floridian directly or indirectly. Mr. Félix Lasarte addressed the Council regarding the project and a presentation is put forth to address issues and requests on the application. Mr. Jesus Suarez addresses the Council as well regarding the project and let’s the Council know that Mr. Tovar thanks the Council for their support. He further states that Mr. Tovar has cooperated fully with the Ethics Commissions and that the Commission has inspected many documents and that their opinion should put all doubts to rest. Councilwoman Rodriguez reiterates that the decision that the Council had made to hold off on voting was made only because they, “at least my doubts were addressed and to make certain that things were done properly.” Councilwoman Rodriguez stated that there was nothing personal against the Mayor, however, things needed to be done correctly. She then motions for approval. Councilwoman Ruiz seconds the motion.

Councilwoman Ruiz addresses the City Manager and the City Attorney regarding the involvement of staff in the development of this project. She wants to make certain that all items and issues brought to light by the Commission are met and adhered to. Councilwoman Ruiz also reminds Mr. Lasarte regarding the previous concerns that the Council had as to the actual development of the project such as the gates, traffic lights and such. Councilwoman Fraga also states that as an elected body, they are elected to look at everything carefully and doing the best job that they can for the City. She asks Mr. Lasarte when construction will begin on this project. Mr. Lasarte lets Council know that it will probably be a few months before the process is completed with permits and such. Council does voice their concern regarding the financing issues with the project. Councilwoman Fraga states that she is concerned that all the financial issues and finances are in place so that this project is not dropped midway. Mr. Lasarte states that they have architects, project managers, and others ready to go on this and that there should not be any concerns. “In Venezuela?” Councilwoman Fraga asks. “Yes, in Venezuela”, Mr. Lasarte responds. The City Manager addresses the Council and Mr. Tovar directly stating that he would make certain that staff and everyone involved with this project was done properly and “the American way, the right way”.

Councilwoman Rodriguez also co-sponsored this Resolution and it was supported by all council members who voiced their support and gratitude to our brave men and women who serve our country and preserve our freedoms.

Fees for “A Day for the Family”

Mayor Boria brought this item forward, an outdoor event is being planned for Saturday, November 16, 2013, it is an outdoor event presented by “Marcha Para Jesus Miami”. The event is to be held at JC Bermudez Park and representatives of the event asked for the Council to waive fees involved in the production of the event. Although, there

The Mayor called for a Special Council Meeting to be held September 30, 2013 at 9:30 am to discuss Mr. Tovar’s letter as well as some other items placed by the Mayor on the Agenda. During this meeting only Councilwoman Ruiz was present. The other council members had prior arrangements which could not be cancelled on such short notice. At this time, without have a quorum, the Mayor requested that the items to be discussed be moved to the next Council meeting to be held on October 9, 2013. In addition, Mayor Boria requested a full evaluation of the job performance of the City Manager, Joe Carollo. The Meeting adjourned. The next Council Meeting will be held at the Doral Government Center on October 9, 2013, at 6:00 PM.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Barbara Romani shares her Breast Cancer story

O

ctober is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time of the year in which a large number of companies and individuals come together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease (risk and preventive measures) and provide access to different services and support. Since thousands of American women receive a diagnosis of Breast Cancer each year and this devastating news is usually accompanied by feelings of denial, sadness, fear, loneliness, guilt, and even anger, it is important to remember that there is always hope. That’s why October is an excellent time to honor those who have survived the disease and whose lives are an example and inspiration to many people.

An example of Courage, Love, Faith and Hope

Barbara Romani, a Doral Resident for 22 years, is one of the courageous women who has fought and survived breast cancer. Her life has been an example of tenacity, perseverance and faith. Born in Harlem, New York and the daughter of an Italian immigrant from Northern Italy and Sicily, Barbara spent her childhood and teen years in the West Bronx where she attended Pace University and later Simmon College in Boston, majoring in Business Administration. Shortly after her graduation, she started working at Citibank Group where she has worked for over 51 years in several areas.

Everything Changes In 1987, her life took a turn. Barbara was recruited for a position in Chicago and she had to move. “It was a challenging experience as it was the first time I was away from my family,” she recalls. With so many changes going on in her life, not only in the corporate field but also personally, Barbara was late for her mammogram which had been scheduled annually for the 5 years prior because of her cystic condition. Annual medical check-ups were very important for her because she knew things can change in a short period of time. “I went back to NY for my mammogram as that is where all my doctors were. The mammogram showed that I had calcifications in my left breast so the doctors decided I should have a biopsy,” she continues. The biopsy was done the day before Thanksgiving and it proved to be positive so Barbara had a radical mastectomy a week and a half before Christmas that year. “I was very scared

and thought this was my last Christmas and that I was going to die.” After the surgery and feeling a little better, Barbara found something that scared her again: “On Christmas morning after attending Mass, I was doing exercises with my arms as the surgeon had removed lymph nodes to see if any were affected. My hand slipped doing the exercise and I felt a lump almost in the middle of my chest.” That discovery was really frightening and a surprise for everybody. “My mother and husband kept saying how this could be, and even my doctor became very upset. It had literally come from nowhere.” Another Surgery and treatment Another biopsy was scheduled for the first business day in the New Year and it proved to be positive. “Everyone was in shock, the doctor, my husband, my family, me…I thought about how many people examined me before my first operation and did not feel anything.” A second operation for

another radical mastectomy was scheduled exactly four weeks apart from the first operation. Barbara recalls that she “was the talk of New York University Hospital” since it is not so common to find cases like this every day. Two weeks later she went back home to Chicago and the doctors strongly recommended chemotherapy as treatment. Again, so many fears. “I was convinced that I was going to die.” Barbara had 10 months of aggressive chemotherapy during which she developed a rare lung disorder which was treated for one and a half years. Key factor of success As a result of her experience and after 25 years disease-free, Barbara states that faith, positive attitude and support are very important on the road for recovery. “I would advise anyone living with cancer to place your faith and trust in God, be positive, and use productive energy to move forward, always surround yourself with positive people, and join a support group,” she said.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Effective Education Part of the awareness is learning how to recognize early signs of cancer and seek prompt medical attention for symptoms. Most cases of breast cancer are found by women noticing unusual changes in their bodies, taking the initiative and making an appointment to see the doctor as soon as possible: the earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chance of beating it. Doctors are always ready to answer questions and give guidelines on what to do. Being ‘aware’ means knowing what the breasts look and feel like and getting them checked out if some of this signals are found: change in skin texture, discharge (liquid), change in size or shape, redness or a rash on the skin, a swelling in the armpit, any lump or thickening that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue, nipples inverted and constant pain in the breast or armpit. Family history of cancer or certain pre-existing conditions, such as fibrocystic breasts are equally important to follow up on. Finding a breast change does not necessarily mean there is a cancer but knowing the alerts from the body is always a good practice for being healthy. Screening Programs Screening means all those medical procedures (such as mammograms, digital mammograms, MRIs, etc.) used to identify early cancer or pre-cancer before signs are recognizable. Another form of testing, the simplest one, starts at home and is the breast selfexamination. The American Cancer Society highlight certain practices according to the women’s age: - Women 30 years of age and older should perform breast self-examination every month. - Women 20-39 should have a physical examination of the breast every three years, performed by a health care professional such as a physician, physician assistant, nurse or nurse practitioner. - Women 40 and older should have a physical examination of the breast every year, performed by a health care professional. - Women 40 years of age and older should have a mammogram every year.

Healthy Habits Awareness also means to take care of the body and health by making wise choices in lifestyle. “I had taken my good health for granted but it is a gift, one we must treasure and thank God for.” Barbara adds. As the American Cancer Society recommends, some practices such as “avoiding smoking, staying at a healthy weight, eating right, and keeping active” can lower the chances of getting cancer. Some

other healthy habits may include: drinking alcoholic beverages with moderation, avoiding unnecessary X-rays, losing weight (if you are overweight), taking a multivitamin, and getting regular exercise. Listed as that, these practices can be hard for some people but simple adjustments in the daily routine can be a good start: walking or biking to the store instead of using the car, climbing the stairs instead of taking the elevator, lowering the consumption of sugary food or adding more vegetables and fruits to the diet. Healthy habits also include having a positive attitude towards life and the way problems are solved. Keep a balanced perception of priorities and handle stressful situations with calm. As Barbara recalls “All the things that I thought were important turned out not to be.” Although studies haven’t proved that stressful situations could lead to cancer, it is true that those situations can make some people more likely to take up unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, overeating or heavy drinking which can be a risk factor particularly for breast cancer. Life truly is a treasure and taking care of our health is one way to appreciate it.

Being informed and ready to support others

Nobody wants to have a diagnosis such a cancer but unfortunately almost everybody knows someone who is fighting against the disease; getting informed is one way to support them and saving lives at the same time. That task is not difficult nowadays though because the internet makes it possible to get access to useful information with just one click. Here are some websites to start: • American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org • Breast Cancer Information: www.cancercenter.com • Breast Cancer Organization: www.breastcancer.org • Breast Cancer Society: www.breastcancersociety.org • Army of Women: www.armyofwomen.org • Support Groups: www.abcdbreastcancersupport.org Another way to help those who live with cancer are support groups. Being part of a group of peers who have experienced similar situations will give the person the emotional support they need to keep living with and after breast cancer. Understanding the benefits of these groups may give a new perspective and helps many people like Barbara join them every year, “I remember during that time I joined a cancer support group called Y ME” and now she supports many organizations such as the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Cancer Center, the Sylvester Care Center at the University of Miami, the National Center for Cancer Research, and the American Center for Cancer Research. Ultimately family or friends have one of the most active roles in comforting and supporting anyone fighting with cancer. Although they cannot expect to cure or fix the situation, being available, present and positive are great medicine as it was proven in Barbara’s experience: “I want to thank God for my surgeon, my oncologist and all the people He placed in my life to love and support me.” Stories like Barbara’s are full of inspiration and hope. Let’s take a moment during October, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to learn a little bit more about how to take care of ourselves and enjoy each day as Barbara practices: “I begin each day with this prayer, “Thank you for the gift of life and thank you for today.” I thank God that He has given me one more day to live. What I have to do is use that day to the fullest.” Doral Family Journal also wants to honor and remember all those who have lost their battle with cancer. A salute for their courageousness and will.

Raising Breast Cancer Awareness

Raising awareness means saving lives and that is true for women all ages. According to statistics of the Worldwide Breast Cancer Organization, 527 new cases of Breast Cancer per day will be diagnosed in the USA in 2013, and 110 women could potentially die from the disease. Dramatically, one-third of these lives, between 12 to 37 cases per day, could be saved if detected and treated early. Effective education, screening and healthy habits are extremely important.

- Women at high risk should get an MRI and a mammogram every year. Some people avoid early screening because of the fear that if they start having those checkups they are acting negatively or expecting the worst in their life, but the reality is that early detection and prevention are critical as it was shown in Barbara’s story.

ctubre es el mes dedicado a la Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Seno; un momento del año en el que un gran número de empresas y personas se unen para compartir información y crear conciencia sobre esta temible enfermedad, sus riesgos y medidas preventivas, así como informar sobre los distintos servicios y apoyo a las personas que la padecen. Como miles de mujeres en los Estados Unidos reciben un diagnóstico de cáncer de seno cada año y esta devastadora noticia suele ir acompañada de sentimientos de negación, tristeza, miedo, soledad, culpa, e incluso la ira, es muy importante recordar que siempre existe esperanza. Es por eso que octubre también es un excelente momento para honrar a aquellos que han sobrevivido a la enfermedad y cuyas vidas son una inspiración para muchas personas hoy día.

Un Ejemplo de Valor, Amor, Fe y Esperanza

Bárbara Romani, residente del Doral desde hace 22 años, es una de esas mujeres valientes que han luchado y sobrevivido al cáncer de seno. Su vida ha sido un ejemplo de tenacidad, perseverancia y fe. Nació en Harlem, Nueva York, y es hija de inmigrantes italianos del norte de Italia y Sicilia. Bárbara pasó su infancia y adolescencia en el oeste del Bronx, donde asistió a Pace University y posteriormente a Simmons College en Boston, donde se especializo en Administración de Empresas. Poco después de su graduación, comenzó a trabajar en el grupo financiero Citibank, donde ha laborado por más de 51 años. Todo Cambia En 1987, su vida dio un giro. Bárbara fue contratada para un puesto en Chicago y tuvo que mudarse. “Fue una experiencia difícil, ya que era la primera vez que estaba lejos de mi familia”, recuerda. Con tantos cambios en su vida, no sólo en el ámbito empresarial, sino también personal, Bárbara demoró su mamografía que hasta entonces había sido programada anualmente durante los últimos 5 años a causa de su condición quística. Los chequeos médicos anuales eran muy importantes para ella pues sabía que las cosas pueden cambiar en muy corto tiempo. “Regresé a Nueva York para mi mamografía ya que allí era donde estaban todos mis médicos. La mamografía mostró que tenía calcificaciones en mi seno izquierdo, por lo que los médicos decidie-

ron que debería hacerse una biopsia”. La biopsia se realizó el día antes de Acción de Gracias y resultó ser positiva, así que Bárbara tuvo que someterse a una mastectomía radical una semana y media antes de Navidad ese año. “Yo estaba muy asustada y pensé que esa sería mi última Navidad, pensé que iba a morir”. Después de la cirugía y sintiéndose un poco mejor, Bárbara encontró algo que la asustó de nuevo: “La mañana de Navidad después de asistir a misa, hacía ejercicios con mis brazos ya que el cirujano me había quitado los ganglios linfáticos para ver si se vieron afectados. Mi mano se deslizó haciendo el ejercicio y sentí un bulto casi en el medio de mi pecho”. Ese descubrimiento fue realmente aterrador y una sorpresa para todo el mundo. “Mi madre y mi esposo seguían preguntando como podía ser posible, incluso mi doctor se molestó. Esto había literalmente salido de la nada”. Otra Cirugía, Tratamientos Otra biopsia fue programada para el primer día hábil del nuevo año y resultó ser positivo. “Todos estaban en estado de shock, el doctor, mi esposo, mi familia, yo... solo pensaba en cuántas personas

me examinaron antes de mi primera operación y no sentí nada”. Se programó una segunda operación para otra mastectomía radical exactamente cuatro semanas después de la primera operación. “Era la noticia del Hospital Universitario de New York”, recuerda Bárbara ya que no es común encontrar casos como este todos los días. Dos semanas más tarde, regresó a Chicago y los médicos recomendaron quimioterapia como tratamiento. Una vez más, tantos miedos: “Yo estaba convencida que iba a morir”. Bárbara duró 10 meses en quimioterapia agresiva durante los cuales desarrolló una enfermedad pulmonar muy rara, que tuvo que ser posteriormente tratada por un año y medio. Factor clave del éxito Como resultado de su experiencia y después de 25 años libre de cáncer, Bárbara afirma que la fe, la actitud propia y el apoyo de otros son muy importantes en el camino a la recuperación. “Yo aconsejaría a cualquier persona que vive con cáncer a poner su fe y confianza primeramente en Dios, luego ser optimista y utilizar su energía productiva en avanzar, procurar rodearse de gente positiva y unirse a un grupo de apoyo”. Como una mujer muy devota que es, agradeció a Dios, su Iglesia, médicos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo por el sostenimiento que recibió en los momentos difíciles: “No hay palabras mortales para expresar adecuadamente mi gratitud a todos ellos”.

Promoviendo la Concientización y Sensibilización sobre Cáncer de Mama

La concientización significa salvar vidas y es válido para mujeres de todas las edades. Según las estadísticas de la Organización Mundial del Cáncer de Mama, 527 nuevos casos de cáncer de seno por día serán diagnosticados en U.S.A en el 2013, y 110 mujeres podrían potencialmente morir de la enfermedad. Sin embargo, una tercera parte de estas vidas, entre 12 a 37 casos por día, podrían salvarse si se detecta y se trata a tiempo. La educación efectiva, diagnóstico oportuno y hábitos saludables son muy importantes. Educación Efectiva Parte de la sensibilización es aprender a reconocer los signos tempranos de cáncer y buscar atención médica inmediata ante cualquier síntoma. La mayoría de los casos de cáncer de seno se detectan por notar cambios inusuales en el cuerpo, tomar

Octubre: Mes de Lucha contra el Cáncer de Mama Estar Informado y Listo Para Apoyar a Otros

Nadie quiere tener un diagnóstico de cáncer, pero lamentablemente es tan común que casi todos conocemos a alguien que está luchando contra la enfermedad en este momento. Estar informado es una manera de apoyarlos y salvar vidas al mismo tiempo. Esa tarea no es difícil hoy en día ya que internet permite tener acceso a información útil con un solo clic. Aquí se listan algunos sitios web: • Sociedad Americana del Cáncer: www.cancer.org • Información Cáncer de Mama: www.cancercenter.com • Organización del Cáncer de Mama: www.breastcancer.org • Sociedad de Cáncer de Mama: www.breastcancersociety.org • Ejército de la Mujer: www.armyofwomen.org • Grupos de apoyo: www.abcdbreastcancersupport.org Otra forma de ayudar a las personas que viven con el cáncer son los grupos de apoyo. Ser parte de un grupo de compañeros que han sufrido situaciones similares le dará a la persona el soporte emocional que necesita para seguir viviendo ahora y después de la enfermedad. Además, comprender los beneficios de estos grupos anima a personas como Bárbara a tener otra perspectiva y participar en ellos todos los años: “Recuerdo que durante ese tiempo tan duro me uní a un grupo de apoyo llamado Y ME”, por eso ahora ella participa en varias organizaciones como la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer, Centro de Investigación Infantil St. Jude, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, el Centro de Atención Sylvester de la Universidad de Miami, el Centro Nacional para la Investigación del Cáncer y el Centro Americano para la Investigación del Cáncer. En última instancia la familia o amigos tienen uno de los papeles más activos en consolar y apoyar a cualquier persona que lucha contra el cáncer. A pesar que ellos no tienen el poder para curar o arreglar la situación, el solo hecho de estar disponible, presente y con positivismo son una gran medicina tal como lo evidencia Bárbara al decir: “Quiero dar las gracias a Dios por mi cirujano, mi oncólogo y todas las personas que Él puso en mi vida para amarme y apoyarme”. Historias como la de Bárbara están llenas de inspiración y esperanza. Tomemos un momento durante octubre, el Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre el Cáncer, para aprender un poco más acerca de cómo cuidar de nosotros mismos y disfrutar cada día con prácticas como la que ella misma nos enseña: “Empiezo cada día con esta oración ‘Gracias por el regalo de la vida y gracias por el día de hoy’. Doy gracias a Dios por regalarme un día más y me dispongo a vivirlo al máximo”. Doral Family Journal también desea honrar y recordar a todos aquellos que han perdido su batalla contra el cáncer. - Mujeres con alto riesgo deben realizarse una resonancia magnética y una mamografía cada año. Aunque sea difícil de creer, algunas personas evitan este tipo de exámenes médicos por temor y falsas creencias que si se tienen estos controles están actuando de forma negativa, esperando o atrayendo lo peor para sus vidas, cuando la realidad es que la detección temprana y la prevención son fundamentales como se demostró en el caso de Bárbara. Hábitos Saludables Sensibilizarse significa también cuidar el cuerpo y la salud tomando decisiones sabias en el estilo de vida que se lleve. “Yo había dado por sentado que gozaba de buena salud, pero ahora sé que es un regalo que debemos atesorar y agradecer a Dios”, agrega Bárbara. Como bien lo aconseja la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer, algunas prácticas como el “no fumar, mantener un peso saludable, comer adecuadamente y mantenerse activo” puede reducir las posibilidades de desarrollar cáncer. Otras medidas preventivas incluyen: tomar bebidas alcohólicas con moderación, evitar exponerse a los rayos X innecesariamente, perder peso (si existe sobrepeso), tomar un multivitamínico y hacer ejercicio regularmente. Visto así, estas prácticas pueden ser difíciles para algunas personas, pero se puede comenzar con ajustes simples en la rutina diaria: utilizar la bicicleta o caminar en lugar del automóvil, subir escaleras en vez de tomar el ascensor, bajar el consumo de alimentos azucarados o añadir más verduras y frutas a la dieta. Tener hábitos saludables también implica demostrar una actitud positiva hacia la vida y la forma en que se enfrentan los problemas; manejar situaciones estresantes con calma y mantener una percepción equilibrada de prioridades. Como Bárbara recuerda “De pronto, todas las cosas que pensé que eran importantes resultaron no serlo”. Aunque los estudios no han demostrado que las situaciones estresantes pueden provocar cáncer, si es cierto que ciertas circunstancias pueden contribuir con desarrollar conductas no saludables como fumar y comer o beber en exceso, las cuales se consideran un factor de riesgo para el cáncer de mama en particular. La vida realmente es un tesoro y cuidar de nuestra salud es una manera de apreciarla.

la iniciativa y hacer una cita con el médico a la mayor brevedad. Mientras más temprano se detecte, mayor será la probabilidad de salir victorioso. Los médicos siempre están dispuestos a responder preguntas y dar directrices sobre qué hacer. Estar “conscientes” significa saber cómo lucen y cómo se sienten los senos normalmente; de esta forma será más fácil comprobar si existe algún cambio o se presenta alguna de estas señales: cambios en la textura de la piel, secreción (líquido), cambio en el tamaño o forma, enrojecimiento o sarpullido en la piel, hinchazón en la axila, cualquier bulto o engrosamiento que sea o sienta diferente al resto del tejido mamario, pezones invertidos o dolor constante en el pecho o en la axila. Estar alerta si existen antecedentes familiares de cáncer o ciertas condiciones pre-existentes, como senos fibroquísticos es igualmente importante. Encontrar un cambio en los senos no significa necesariamente que hay un cáncer, pero aprender a seguir las alertas del cuerpo es siempre una buena práctica para estar saludable. Los Programas de Detección Los exámenes de detección o “screening” (en inglés) son el conjunto de procedimientos médicos (como mamografías, mamografías digitales, resonancias magnéticas, etc.) que se utilizan para identificar el cáncer temprano o pre-cáncer antes de que se manifiesten signos reconocibles. Otra forma de prueba, la más simple de todas, comienza en casa con el autoexamen mamario. La Sociedad Anticancerosa Americana resalta ciertas prácticas de acuerdo con la edad de la mujer: - Mujeres de 30 años de edad y mayores deben realizarse un autoexamen de mama cada mes. - Mujeres de 20 a 39 años deben tener un examen físico de los senos cada tres años, a cargo de un profesional de la salud, como un médico, asistente médico o enfermero. - Mujeres de 40 años o más deben tener un examen físico de los senos cada año, a cargo de un profesional médico. - Mujeres de 40 años de edad y mayores deben hacerse una mamografía cada año.

ack in December 2012, Councilwoman Christi Fraga envisioned the creation of a Youth Advisory Board for the City of Doral as “a group of youth in the community that want to make a difference because this is their future, this is their home”. She looked forward to start preparing a new generation of leaders for the city with young people that understand government and care enough to give their time and effort to public service. The results of the initiative exceed all expectations. The City of Doral Youth Advisory Board was created through Ordinance #2013-02 during the Council Meeting of February 13, 2013. After that, a nomination and application process was opened and concluded last May with the appointment of Frank Lam, Eduardo Torres, Emily Bello-Pardo, Jessica Agudelo, Gian Andres Boria, Sebastian Aranguibel and Genesis Vasquez, who were selected to serve the community through this committee. These extraordinary young citizens shared their reflections on the changes they have seen in the city since moving here and their views, hopes and projects for the future of the city they call home and proudly serve. Frank Lam: “I would like to see more community involvement” He moved to Doral in 2006. The main changes that have impressed Frank in these years have been the improvement of the parks and the appearance of “more businesses and more privately owned enterprises; the city has grown financially and has expanded infrastructure.” His main wish for the future of Doral is to see “the city to grow more to be an urban city. I would like to have citywide events where the community gets more involved.” “As a student, as a resident and as a member of the board I am able to actually live firsthand the impact your work can have, Being involved I am able to see the results and I can bring that back.” “I would like to see the city continue to grow. I would like to see the overcrowding of the schools solved, see a new school being built, dedicated to the arts. And I would like to see more community involvement.” Eduardo Torres: “The city is developing the right way” Eduardo Torres serves as Chair of the Youth Advisory Board. He has been living in Doral since 2002 and in his opinion the city “has changed magnificently. I wouldn’t change anything and I think the city is developing the right way.” What he likes best about Doral is “the way the whole city is connected. It is very community oriented.

I envision Doral as one of the greatest locations everybody knows about”. Through his service on the YAB, Eduardo looks forward to “connecting the city’s youth. Create more events and more involvement, having that perspective for the youth.” Gian Andres Boria: “I am expecting it to be one of the greatest cities” GIan Andres Boria moved to Doral at 4 years old and the main change that has impressed him about Doral is the increase on businesses, schools and the amount of immigrants from so many different countries. “It is growing everywhere and it keeps on growing. I am expecting it to be one of the greatest cities in the world.” Although he likes very much the parks and schools, he expects that more schools are built very soon and that streets are improved and become safer for pedestrians and cyclist. Emily Bello-Pardo: “Open doors towards all immigrants” She received the “Doralian Women Youth Leader” award in March. Is the oldest member of the YAB. A seasoned spoke person, Emily makes a point on expressing that these are her “own personal positions, and do not necessarily reflect the ones of what the board stands for. We are the YAB but are separate individuals that get together to talk about the issues of the city and try to contribute to the city in different ways. It is an important aspect to clarify. My opinions do not reflect those of the board.” She moved to Doral in 2007 and thinks the growing process of Doral has been very interesting and hopes it continues to be that way to allow prosperity to keep coming to the city. “We are going to make it a successful city. What I like best about the city of Doral is the people, the potential for so many different things that the people in this great city have. Not only

we have the best immigrants from so many different countries, but I think the best assets of the city are all the skills people bring with them to make the city of Doral grow. “ Her vision for Doral is that “the city keeps improving itself and it keeps having open doors towards all immigrants in Latin America being able to bring them here and give them opportunities.” Jessica Agudelo: “It is a very family oriented city” Jessica Agudelo moved to Doral 3 years ago. “I have seen a lot more of small businesses that continue to pop up every single day. I like this is a family city. We have parks for the families; it is a very family oriented city. There is not much that I would change.” “Through the YAB I want to inspire others to take on leadership positions. As long as I can inspire someone to be better and to try something new that means the world to me. I want to make sure everyone knows that they have potential and they can use it and anything is possible. In ten more years I would like see Doral annexing more lands, more space so we can have more parks, more residencies, and more schools; more things for families to enjoy.” Sebastian Aranguibel: “I want the city to be fun and enjoyable” He moved to Doral 4 years ago and likes of the city that “it is very clean, very neat, and very peaceful. You can enjoy the city, ride your bike and go anywhere.” Traffic safety and cultural development are the main issues that Sebastian would like to see addressed in the city. Through YAB Sebastian wants to increase the promotion of cultural events:” I want to have concerts in the city, cultural events, and art exhibitions. I want the city to be fun and enjoyable”.

a Concejal Christi Fraga impulsó la creación del Comité Juvenil de Doral como un grupo de jóvenes de la comunidad que “quieren hacer una diferencia en la ciudad que constituye su futuro y su hogar”. El mayor deseo de Fraga es preparar una nueva generación de líderes, que conozcan y comprendan los procesos de gobierno y que tengan la conciencia de la necesidad de trabajar activamente por la comunidad. Los resultados de esta iniciativa han excedido cualquier expectativa. El Comité Juvenil de Doral (YAB por sus siglas en inglés), fue creado durante la reunión del Concejo en Febrero 2013 a través de la Ordenanza #2013-02. El proceso de nominaciones tuvo lugar en Mayo y concluyó con el nombramiento de Frank Lam, Eduardo Torres, Emily Bello-Pardo, Jessica Agudelo, Gian Andres Boria, Sebastian Aranguibel y Genesis Vasquez como miembros del comité. Estos extraordinarios jóvenes ciudadanos compartieron sus reflexiones sobre la evolución que han visto en la ciudad desde que se mudaron aquí y también sus deseos y proyectos para el futuro de la ciudad que constituye su hogar. Frank Lam: “Quiero ver mayor participación de la comunidad” Residente de Doral desde 2006, los cambios principales que han impresionado a Frank en los últimos años han sido las mejoras en los parques y la aparición de “muchos nuevos negocios y firmas privadas. La ciudad ha crecido financieramente y expandido su infraestructura”. Su principal deseo es “ver la ciudad crecer como centro urbano. Quiero que haya eventos donde la comunidad pueda participar. Como estudiante, residente y miembro de este comité puedo experimentar de primera mano el impacto de trabajar por la ciudad. Al involucrarme en los procesos puedo ver los resultados directamente”. “Deseo que la ciudad siga creciendo. Que se resuelva la sobrepoblación en las escuelas. Quiero que se construya una escuela nueva, que esté enfocada en las artes, pero sobre todo quiero ver mayor participación de la comunidad”. Eduardo Torres: “La ciudad se está desarrollando adecuadamente”. Eduardo Torres es el Presidente del Comité. Ha vivido en Doral desde 2002 y en su opinión “la evolución

de la ciudad ha sido magnífica. No cambiaría nada, pienso que la ciudad se está desarrollado adecuadamente.” Lo que más le gusta de Doral es “como todo esta interconectado, orientado a desarrollar la comunidad. Mi visión para Doral es que se convierta en una localidad de referencia para todo el mundo.” A través de su participación en el YAB, Eduardo espera “involucrar más a la juventud de la ciudad. Crear eventos que estimulen la participación y poner la perspectiva de la juventud en las actividades.” Gian Andres Boria: “Quiero que sea una de las ciudades más importantes” Gian Andres Boria vive en Doral desde los 4 años de edad. El cambio en Doral que más le ha impresionado es el incremento de los negocios, de las escuelas y sobre todo la gran cantidad de inmigrantes de tantos países que han llegado a través de los años. “Hay crecimiento por todas partes, es un crecimiento continuo. Yo quiero que Doral sea una de las ciudades más importantes del mundo.” Su parte favorita son los parques y escuelas, sin embargo espera que se construyan más escuelas pronto y que se mejoren las calles para hacerlas más seguras y transitables para peatones y ciclistas. Emily Bello-Pardo: “Las puertas abiertas para todos los inmigrantes” Galardonada el pasado mes de marzo con el premio “Mujer líder juvenil de Doral”, Emily es la mayor de los miembros de YAB. Hizo énfasis en destacar que las opiniones expresadas constituyen su posición personal y no necesariamente reflejan las de comité. Vive en Doral desde el 2007 y piensa que el crecimiento de la ciudad ha sido muy interesante. Espera que ese crecimiento constante continúe de esa mane-

ra para beneficio y prosperidad de la ciudad. “Juntos haremos de esta una ciudad exitosa. Lo que más me gusta de Doral es su gente, el potencial que tienen para hacer muchas cosas diferentes. No solamente tenemos los mejores inmigrantes de muchos países diferentes, sino que estos traen consigo excelentes habilidades y conocimientos que constituyen los mejores activos para hacer que la ciudad progrese.” Su visión para la ciudad es que “Doral siga creciendo y mejorando, siempre con las puertas abiertas para recibir a todos los inmigrantes de Latinoamérica y darles las oportunidades que pueden o no haber tenido en sus países de origen.” Jessica Agudelo: “Es una ciudad muy familiar” Jessica Agudelo vive en Doral hace 3 años. “He visto el crecimiento de la actividad comercial continua de pequeños empresarios. Me gusta ver que Doral es una ciudad muy familiar. Realmente no hay mucho que cambiar en la ciudad.” “A través del YAB quiero inspirar a los jóvenes a tomar posiciones de liderazgo comunitario. Me sentiré satisfecha con saber que he inspirado a alguien a mejorar y participar en nuevas actividades. Quiero que todos los jóvenes sepan que tienen potencial y que pueden utilizarlo para beneficiar la comunidad, que todo es posible.” “En los próximos 10 años espero ver que Doral pueda anexar más terrenos a la ciudad, para tener más espacio y construir más parques, escuelas y residencias; más espacios para que las familias puedan disfrutarlos.” Sebastian Aranguibel: “Quiero que la ciudad sea divertida y agradable para la juventud” Residente de Doral desde el 2009, Sebastián disfruta mucho de andar en bicicleta por la ciudad “me gusta que es una ciudad muy limpia, organizada y pacífica; y que es posible llegar a todas partes en bicicleta.” Sin embargo, la seguridad en el tráfico es uno de los aspectos donde encuentra oportunidades de mejora. También el desarrollo de opciones culturales y de diversión para la juventud. “Quiero a través de YAB promover la realización de más eventos culturales: conciertos, exhibiciones de arte, etc. Quiero que la ciudad sea divertida y agradable para la juventud. Que no sea necesario salir de Doral para encontrar sitios donde los jóvenes puedan divertirse sanamente.” Los miembros de YAB se encuentran preparando el evento “College Madness” para traer información sobre aplicaciones a universidades y ayudas financieras para los estudiantes Junior y Senior de la ciudad. Tendrá lugar a fines de octubre, y es la primera de las muchas actividades que planifican para incrementar la participación de la juventud en los eventos de la ciudad.

“Since the city of doral continues to grow. I believe that there should be a plan to build shopping centers and parks because there’s construction of homes everywhere. There needs to be a balance of homes and entertainment. A bigger park with more fields would bring more people to doral and it will make this city known. I do expect this city to continue to grow. It’s just we need more recreation. Having more recreational centers will help the city get known. People of different cities will come and make good comments about our city and park facilities”, Cindy Rosero (18).

“I feel as if the City of Doral is growing too quickly. When I moved here, I was one year old, and Doral was a small, family-oriented town. Whenever you would go to the supermarket or to the park, you would always find someone you knew. Everyone knew everyone, and I personally loved it because it was like having an even bigger, second family looking out for you. The fact that most of us are Hispanic or of Hispanic decent allows us to understand each other and be able to enjoy our culture with people who share it with us. Nowadays, unfortunately, I have noticed less and less of that friendliness in the community. I feel as if we are now more focused on the development and expansion of our city rather than the very thing that made this town special: our togetherness. Although, I do not disagree with the fact that the City of Doral does need to expand to accommodate the amount of residents we plan to receive over the next couple of years, I hope that we do not lose the connection that we all had at the begin. I believe the residents of Doral should take a step back and realize how fortunate we are to be living in a city where the most important thing to us is family. No matter how populated Doral becomes, we should be sure that it remains a caring and family-friendly environment for its inhabitants”, Isabel Rios Pulgar (14).

Therefore, Doral Family Journal recognizing youth as key change agents in the development and strengthening of this growing city, wants to know their opinions and expectations about the issues they consider priorities for the future of this city.

“I believe the city of Doral, as with any small town, can be viewed as an anchor that hinders success or as a stepping stone to it depending on what you do with your experience in the city. However, Doral has a metropolitan complex unlike most small towns; it’s ever-growing and ever-generic, as if it was just a simulation for life. And that’s all it really is; it’s a place to live comfortably should you choose to, but it is a place that’s only growing to further its own ego and that of its denizens. Rather than growing to make life better, as it seems to be doing, I believe the city is just growing to try and put itself on the map, rather than as a city that is expanding because it is proud of itself. I propose that Doral should promote a more positive image of itself while at the same time discussing and addressing its problems, rather than sugar-coating them. Through bringing more culture to the city and advertising its positive features (as the city has been doing with functions such as the Concert For Peace and building new parks) and building on its good features (such as the Trolley system), we can attract more people to our city and have them wanting to come back for more. As well, we should hold more public functions, where both citizens and council members are to act mature and respectful towards one another, wherein problems can be solved head-on and the people of Doral are given a voice and take advantage of this chances to express their opinions and participate on the decision making process of the city”, Henry Galvez (17).

“To me the city of Doral is a nice and secure place to be. It is not necessary to leave the city, since everything can be found here. Everything is great, however, the population is growing yet the number of schools and parks has stayed the same. If the city added the mentioned stuff, Doral would become a better place”, Ronald Acevedo (16).

“In my personal opinion, it has grown into a wonderful city for families, as well as for businesses. Without getting into politics, I strongly believe that the local government has done a great job in improving our parks and recreation facilities. They have also build our own City Hall, creating an icon in our community that we should be proud of. In my opinion, the city of Doral has to focus more on the children and teenagers of our community. By doing so we must improve the social interaction between residents by culturally learning about our customs, and keep a dynamic environment. I, a young outdoor person strongly support the outdoor activities. In today’s world I have learned that we must be active for a healthy living. I know that the city of Doral has spent a vast amount of resources to improve our parks. However, a key factor, which is our population, has increased substantially creating a breaking point where our parks are overcrowded during an extensive period, creating a deficiency in the different sport fields and parking spaces. The city of Doral should include in the near future plans, the construction and development of new park facilities, which include new sport fields, a track for track-andfield training and an Olympic swimming pool. This will help prevent our residents to migrate over to near by cities to use their facilities for their sport academic purposes. On the other hand, another key element to improve our culture among the youngsters, as well as for adults would be that the city must invest in a development and construction of a performing art theater. This will allow the young adult resident to participate academically as well as entertainingly to enrich our culture. Therefore, I understand that theses expectations from the point-of-view of a teenager are economically difficult in today’s economy. However, the city of Doral should take them into consideration and adopt the suggestions in order to include them in future budgets, if they are not included as of now. The investment of the enrichment of the children and teenager of our community will eventually provide them with a more prosper and positive future”, Victoria Ramirez (14).

orn 2 Learn is the oldest childcare programs in Doral. There is no doubt that this is the place where I’ would leave my children all day long. Cristina Espinel and Llinka Palacio, the creators of the program, are two wonderful mothers who has worked from dawn to dusk during this time to make this preschool the exceptional place it has become. All started with a dream. The teachers, born in Ecuador, didn’t know each other; however, they shared the same passion. Llinka didn’t want to think about leaving her kid with some other people. Cristina, whose first child had recently been born, eagerly wanted to take care of him. They were introduced by some friends and the magic happened. They knew that’s what they wanted to do, open a preschool. Immediately they began to work on the project . “We worked for three years to open this school. We created a great program based in all the excellent education and care we wanted our children to receive. All we thought was how we want my children to be educated? Who will teach them? What will they need to know? Who we would like to teach them? How I want them to be treated?”, said Llinka. Once you start talking to these women you

realized you have meet to great teachers. Those who cannot live without educating children or without the energy kids have. As soon as you enter the place you breathe peace, you recharge your positive energy. It is impossible not to feel safe and secure. Wisdom is all those two women are made off. Unlike many people, they do not believe children misbehave. They think that kids go through different stages of development that are normal. The strategy is to study these changes and learn

to deal with them. A particularly difficult moment in a kid’s life is when they are two years old. This is the stage when the separation and individualization process between the child and the mother starts. They define it as the mini adolescence of the child. Children usually begin to rebel against the mothers, they start answering NO to all questions; they want to eat by themselves. It is very difficult for the family to understand this process at such a young age. They also agreed that the importance of preschool education is overestimated. According to them the child’s emotional intelligence, that will determine the school success of children and adults, is formed in the first five years of life. “At this stage they begin to develop social relationships with other children. They learn to identify and regulate emotions, and to solve problems. It might sound ridiculous, but kids learn not to pull the toy but to wait for their turn to use it. These are things that develop within the child’s game that will create the basis of how the future social relationships will be,” said Espinel. When parents take their kids to school for the very first time they are always worry that kids cry. At first they always cry, also moms. “A lot of mother brake in tears when they bring their children for the first time. They can’t even make it to the car. Mothers always come back crying. We take the time then to show them the classrooms. As soon as a kid goes through these doors they stop crying. They are part of a new family, a team of little kids. We always tell mothers that crying is a normal transition. It might take some time but it always passes,” they add. At Born 2 learn parents are close to their children all day. Each family has a user name and password that can be used to access the preschool from the school website. Parents only have access to their kid’s classrooms. During the day the classrooms can be visit as many times as desire.

Espinel and Palacio consider that the greatest reward they have is when they are in a Public space and they are approached by an teenager who was a student of them. Parents also remind them that those were the best and most beautiful years of their child’s life. “It is divine to realize that all the effort we’ve done has been worthwhile.” When I asked them about the reasons why their school was so unique they replied “We do not see this school as a business, obviously you have to live, but we give an invaluable service. We have a great team, with very sacrificed and dedicated teachers who share our passion. That’s what makes us special and different, the attention we give to children and the place they have in our lives.” I also include my perspective. These two teachers know their job. They know every moment in a child development from the beginning of their life until the day they make their way to elementary school. They didn’t take this profession by chance or because they had no choice. They consciously knew they had been born to educate children. Born 2 Learn Preschool have a capacity for 125 children. It is open from Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. They don’t have plans to keep growing at this time. They fear that they may lose the level of excellence they have in the community. They do not want, under any circumstances, to miss the whole process of learning and growth of the child and the close family interaction the school have with all families. orn 2 Learn es uno de los programas de cuidado infantil más antiguos del Doral. Con doce años de experiencia, es, sin dudas, el lugar en el que dejaría a mis niños con los ojos cerrados. Cristina Espinel y Llinka Palacio, las creadoras del programa, son dos madres maravillosas que han trabajado de sol a sol durante todo este tiempo para convertir este preescolar en un lugar excepcional.

Al principio fue un sueño. Las dos maestras, ambas de origen ecuatoriano, no se conocían. Sin saberlo estaban unidas por el deseo infinito de cuidar de sus bebes y participar activamente en su proceso de crecimiento. Llinka no quería pensar en la idea de separase del pequeño y Cristina deseaba ansiosamente cuidar de su primer hijo. Algunos amigos las presentaron y la conexión fue instantánea. Inmediatamente comenzaron a trabajar en el proyecto. “Trabajamos durante tres años para abrir este preescolar. Creamos un programa que integrara todas las cosas y todo lo bueno que nosotras queríamos para nuestros hijos. Hicimos esta escuela desde la perspectiva de cómo quiero que mis hijos se eduquen, quiénes quiero que les enseñen, y cómo quiero que los traten,” me comentan. Conversar con Cristina como con Llinka, no deja sino la satisfacción de que hemos conocido a dos maestras de verdad. Esas que no pueden vivir sin educar, sin acariciar a los niños y sin respirar de la energía que desprenden. Ese ambiente de tranquilidad y paz, de lugar renovado con las energías positivas de la vida es lo que nos da la bienvenida a esta escuela. Cuando uno las conoce se da cuenta de la sa-

biduría que poseen. Ellas no creen, a diferencia de muchos, que los niños se porten mal. Piensan que solo atraviesan diferentes etapas de desarrollo que son normales y cada una tiene su peculiaridad. La estrategia es estudiar esos cambios y aprender a convivir con ellos. Un momento particularmente difícil son los dos años. Las dos consideran que en esta etapa se produce un proceso de separación e individualización entre el niño y su mamá. Ellas la definen como la mini adolescencia del niño. Usualmente comienzan a revelarse contra la mamá, a decir que no a todas las cosas, a querer comer solos. Es muy difícil para toda la familia entender que este proceso a tan temprana edad. También creen que la importancia de la educación preescolar en los niños está sobrestimada. Ellas aseguran que la inteligencia emocional del niño, de la cual dependerá el éxito escolar de niños y cuando sean adultos, se determina en los primeros cinco años de vida de cada niño. Esa es la base donde se crea la parte socio emocional del individuo. “En esta etapa empiezan a desarrollarse las relaciones sociales con otros niños. Aprenden a regular y a identificar emociones, a resolver problemas. Cosas que quizás parecen ridículas como, no te quitó el juguete sino que logro esperar mi turno para usarlo, o lo pido... Son cosas que se desarrollan dentro del juego del niño y crean la base de cómo van a ser sus relaciones sociales futuras,” comentan. Para los padres que llevan a sus hijos a la escuela por primera vez lo más importante es que no lloren. Al principio siempre lloran, también las mamás. “Muchas mamás cuando traen sus niños por primera vez no llegan ni al carro del llanto que tienen. Las traemos y le mostramos el aula y las madres comprenden que los niños se integran con los demás y forman parte del equipo. Siempre les decimos que es una transición normal. Que todos pasan esos períodos y que toma algún tiempo,” agrega Espinel. Born 2 learn también le ofrece a los padres la gran tranquilidad de estar cerca de los hijos todo el día. Cada padre tiene una contraseña con la que pueden acceder a las cámaras del aula de su hijo, desde la página web del preescolar. Si durante el día quieren saber que están haciendo y como se están portando, entran a la página y comprueban por sí mismos. Para Espinel y Palacio, la mayor recompensa es cuando están en el supermercado o en alguna cafetería y se les acerca un adolescente que fue alumno de ellas, las abraza y las saluda. Que se encuentren con los padres y que les recuerden que esos fueron los mejores años de la vida de sus hijos y los más bonitos. “Eso es lo divino… Ver que todo el esfuerzo que hemos hecho ha valido la pena.”

Cuando, casi al despedirnos les pregunté qué hacía de su preescolar un centro único me respondieron al unísono: “Nosotros no vemos este colegio como un negocio, obviamente uno tiene que vivir, pero nosotras damos un servicio que creemos y estamos seguras de que tiene un valor infinito. Tenemos un grandioso equipo de trabajo, con maestras muy sacrificadas y dedicadas que comparten nuestra pasión. Eso es lo que nos hace especiales y diferentes, la atención que le damos a los niños y el lugar que tienen en nuestras vidas.” A estas palabras le sumo la perspectiva de quien conversa con ellas. Estas dos mujeres conocen su trabajo. Saben, al dedillo, todos los momentos de desarrollo del niño desde que llegan a la escuela pequeñitos, hasta el día que emprenden su camino a la educación elemental. Uno las escucha hablar y sonríe, porque son sinceras, porque no llegaron a esta profesión por casualidad o porque no tenían otra opción. Ellas decidieron escoger este camino, que aunque a veces tenga algunas espinas, siempre se recogen rosas. Actualmente tienen capacidad para 125 niños. Abren de Lunes a viernes desde la 7:30 de la mañana hasta las 6:00 de la tarde. Por el momento no piensan seguir creciendo. Temen que puedan perder el grado de excelencia que tienen en la comunidad. No quieren, por ningún motivo, perder la oportunidad de estar involucradas en todo el proceso de aprendizaje y crecimiento del niño y de la interacción con las familias. Campus Safety Week

l pasado 26 de Septiembre, los oficiales Luis Martinez, Ernie Garcica, Marcus Amador y Noel Feliciano pertenecientes al Departamento de Policía de Doral participaron en el evento anual “Campus Safety Week” organizado en las instalaciones del Miami Dade College (MDC) de esta ciudad. El evento contó con la asistencia de más de 500 estudiantes quienes escucharon distintas charlas sobre “Sexting” (mensajes de texto con contenido sexual), uso de cinturones de seguridad y medidas generales para evitar situaciones de riesgo en el recinto estudiantil. Algunos estudiantes probaron el simulador de choque para vehículos y se les distribuyó información sobre seguridad personal, reglamentos y disposiciones sobre manejo bajo influencias del alcohol (DIU), bullying y seguridad en internet. El propósito del evento fue educar a los jóvenes en un esfuerzo constante de prevención que se considera prioritario para el Departamento de Policía del Doral. Como lo expreso el Oficial Noel Feliciano: “Lo importante para nosotros es que los estudiantes estén conscientes de su seguridad personal y prevención de crimen”. Yakir Fernandez, Jefe de Seguridad Publica del MDC, expresó su gratitud a los oficiales del Doral, Miami Dade Switchboard y el Florida Department of Transportation por su apoyo, asistencia y esfuerzo “sin los cuales el evento no hubiese tenido éxito”.

exting and driving becomes prohibited in Florida. The law took effect from Oct. 1, 2013. Under the new ban, texting while driving is illegal for the first time. But it’s considered a secondary offense, not a primary offense. That means that police officers can only cite a texting driver if they pull them over for another infraction, such as speeding. Florida’s new law just took effect and already some people are already talking about ways to make it stricter. Despite all those caveats, AAA calls Florida’s new texting ban a “good start,” and one of the law’s champions in the House calls it a necessary first step if Florida is ever to adopt more strict laws to tackle what many agree is a scourge on the nation’s highways: driver distraction. In Florida from 2010 through 2011, at least 85 crashes caused by distracted drivers turned fatal, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The state has more than 120,000 miles of roads used by more than 15 million licensed drivers. Drivers would be exempted if the vehicle is stationary or the device is being used for navigation purposes. Drivers also would not be fined if using the device for reporting emergencies or criminal/suspicious activity to law enforcement or when a device is used by emergency workers. Drivers also would be exempted when receiving messages related

to radio broadcasts, operating or navigating the vehicle or getting safety-related information, such as emergency, traffic or weather alerts. The ban is one of more than two dozen laws passed by state legislators scheduled to kick in. Other new laws taking effect include one that guarantees the public a right to speak at meetings being held by city and county governments. Another new law bans welfare recipients from using electronic benefit transfer or EBT cards at “adult entertainment establishments” such as strip clubs and casinos.

The art of songwriting Interview with Frank Quintero

he art and musical talent of Frank Quintero are mandatory references for contemporary musicians in Venezuela. A professional musician, drummer, guitarist, keyboardist, singer, and extraordinarily prolific songwriter and producer, his career of over 40 years includes an extensive discography full of successful recordings that are a fundamental part of the life soundtrack for three generations of Venezuelans. “Someone told me once that ‘La Dama de la ciudad’ (The lady from the city) is a song that has followed her family for generations. Her mother liked it, she liked it and her daughter likes it too” said Quintero, during an interview where he shared anecdotes, experiences and memories, while he was working on the planning phase of a Songwriting Workshop for young musicians he will be teaching in Doral. Frank Quintero has a rare musical talent that flows naturally, appears very early in life and with the right training reaches its full potential. A passionate percussionist since a young age, Quintero received the support from his father who, being a musician himself, was able to detect his profound talent and enrolled Frank at one of the best music schools in Venezuela, the ‘Jose Angel Lamas Music Conservatory’. However, classical music did not interest young Frank that much: “I played drums, already owned a drum set, and at the school there were only timpani, bass drums and stuff like that. I was about 8 years old”. His early influences were tropical rhythms and his interest in jazz, rock and bossa-nova began with the emergence of The Beatles “It represented for me a 180 degree transformation my dad did not like.” Experimenting with the Cuban ‘Tres’ (a string instrument with 3 sets of 3 strings) Frank started to learn to play guitar by himself, watching TV shows and looking at the chords players used. His father recommended “for mastering an instrument you have to study it”. Frank followed that advice. Being able to play guitar and drums, it was only a matter of time he started playing jazz and rock. At 15 he was writing songs and had his own band. At 18 began recording singles. Forty years later Frank Quintero main tools for songwriting are still his guitar and his keyboard. Over 250 recorded compositions; over 28 albums with his bands and as a soloist; multiple

collaborations with prestigious musicians like Don Grusin (keyboards) , Abraham Laborier Sr. (bass) , Miguel Bose (singer) and many others; 7 platinum and 10 gold records; a Grammy nomination. All those accolades are a testament to the quality and talent of this Venezuelan artist. ”A planet of musicians” Following his father’s advice of pursuing professional music studies, Frank Quintero left his flourishing music career in his native Venezuela in 1979 and enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, the largest school of American contemporary music in the world. This was an excellent opportunity that allowed him to “get in touch with all these people who are the greatest contemporary musicians. Being able to communicate with them not only on a musical level but also on a human level is the best reward. “ “Music schools in the U.S. allow you to get in touch with musicians from all over the world. It’s like a planet of musicians; all you do is play music all day long.” It was the perfect place for Quintero’s talent to flourish. “I arrived from Venezuela being a great star and it turns out every single student there was like that, extremely talented. That experience prompts you to mature, it helps you grow. You have to jump on that train to succeed. You end up learning things that are

not in the books.” Once graduated from Berklee as a professional musician, the knowledge and network acquired in his college years have allowed him to have an extensive musical career, focused on expressing his talents through songwriting, performing and training new generations of musicians. “Inspiration comes from motivation” “Inspiration for me comes from motivation” says Quintero. He goes on to explain many examples of situations that have motivated him to write a song and put in words all his feelings. “It may be that you listen to something, not paying attention and later you start to whistle; you think it is new but is something you heard before. Or perhaps a friend comes and shares a story with you and it prompts the idea for a song. Or you watch a beautiful movie that touches you and right after you feel the need to write. Those are different ways to get inspired”. “There is another kind of composition, ‘tailor made’, when someone requests from you to create a song right away and you just have to sit down and come up with something. Also there are advertisement jingles, where they show you a briefing of the commercial and you sit down and write the piece from there.” Throughout his long career Quintero has experienced different motivations for writing his songs. Each one has its own story behind. There is “Todo pasara” (It all shall pass); written when he was recording an album, very sad after a recent breakup and thought “I can’t be like this forever. It all shall pass”. The song just poured out of his heart, he wrote it and recorded it right away. “I wrote it for myself and someone told me recently there are people using the song during self-help workshops.” One of his most famous songs, ‘La Dama de la ciudad’ (The Lady from the city), grew out of his desire to write something with a truly Venezuelan sound, influenced by all he learned with Aldemaro Romero when Quintero was part of the ‘Onda Nueva’ ensemble. “I had all the information Aldemaro had taught me, and decided to write a Venezuelan waltz. I wrote the music, but could not find the right lyrics. It turns out I spoke to my grandmothers who were from Barlovento, the area in the central coast of Venezuela. I asked

People | Gente or produced, but it is never bad because it is an expression. Everyone expresses themselves and there is public for everyone. There is always someone who would like it. Now with social media you can put whatever you want online and there are lots of people who are going to see it” “Besides that, everything has already been invented. To create new music you have to take reference on what was done before. Go back to basics, the fundamentals of the current tendencies. Also you need to have a vision and do things that endure over time; write meaningful lyrics that people can identify with them. Connect your mind and your heart before writing.” “Also you have to be careful because ego takes over, speaks for you and gets you into trouble. You have to be aware. This world is glamorous, gives you many advantages and opens many doors, but when the show is over you are the one facing the public. For better or for worse, because when something fails it is going to be your fault. You have to be discreet. I like to set an example for my kids. To my son who is also a musician I said the same thing my father told me: You have to study. I support your career but you have to study.” One might think that after 4 decades of career Frank Quintero has done everything possible. However he still has many things to do like “writing with those who I admire more. Like Sting, for instance. I know I am close.”

process, the steps for songwriting, you know how it is done and can be a composer like these that make a lot of hit songs because they have the tools. Today there are synthesizers that with the touch of a button make the sound of an orchestra. But when you know how to play an instrument, the structure of chords, etc. you reach another level of songwriting.” “Songwriting for others requires a different process” Same songs sound different depending on the performer. “Every version of my songs is awesome in its own way because it reflects the point of view of others. ‘Cancion para ti’ (A Song for You) has arrangements as ballad, bolero, reggaeton, etc. One incredible version is the one Cristian Castro made, very successful.” “Songwriting for others requires a different process.” Before writing a song, Quintero meets and talks to the singer, to recognize their vocal register, their personality and identify the purpose of the song to be written. He has created songs for Kiara, Elisa Rego, Pandora, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Ismael Miranda and many others. Once he has met and connected with them he has been able to write hit songs especially for them. Reflections on career and success Frank Quintero advises young talents who want to be involved in the music business to have their “ears wide open, always. There is not such a thing as bad music. It might be poorly executed, recorded

them about their youth in their small hometown. They told me stories about how expensive it was for the young men to buy a nice shirt to impress the girls that came from Caracas, the capital city, during the holidays to visit their town. And how those city ladies did not pay attention to those small town young men that fell in love with them, regardless of the efforts they put for gaining their attention. It was such a sweet story that I thought ‘This is it; here are the lyrics for the song I was looking for”. Quintero wrote one of the most emblematic songs of his career, the one that is included, in a jazz version, in the Grammy nominated album ‘The Hang’ with Don Grusin. Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the lyrics. As with any great artist, Quintero sometimes feels that someone dictates him what to write. “Lately I am writing both music and lyrics at the same time. I decide on a theme, come up with a name for the song and go from there. You can never say no to songwriting, because when the idea comes up you have to write. You are always producing, reinventing yourself. It is interesting when you are looking to add new elements into the language people are waiting from you.” Each songwriter has his own structure and style. It is like his signature; One that an educated ear immediately identifies. “It is a formula you must respect and care. It is intuitive and does not come on purpose. It is just the way you write, your style.” “However, if you can come to understand the

Músico profesional, baterista, guitarrista, tecladista, prolífico compositor y extraordinario cantante, su carrera de más de 40 años incluye una extensa discografía plena de grabaciones exitosas que constituyen parte fundamental de la banda sonora de la adolescencia y juventud de tres generaciones de venezolanos. “Una vez una señora me decía sobre ‘La dama de la ciudad’ que esa es una canción con la que uno nace, crece y se reproduce”, comentó Quintero, durante una entrevista llena de anécdotas, experiencias y recuerdos, en el marco de la preparación del curso de composición musical para jóvenes que estará dictando próximamente en Doral. Frank Quintero es de esos raros talentos que brotan naturalmente, se manifiestan muy temprano en la vida y con la correcta formación llegan a desarrollar su máximo potencial. Su pasión desde el principio fue la percusión y su padre, quien era bajista y músico de estudio, le proporcionó la oportunidad de formarse en una de las mejores escuelas de música de Venezuela, el Conservatorio José Ángel Lamas. Sin embargo, la música clásica no era lo que llamaba su atención. Sus primeras influencias fueron los ritmos tropicales y su interés por el jazz, rock y bossa nova comenzaron con la aparición de Los Beatles “Aquello fue un giro de 180 grados que a mi papá no le gustó mucho.” Aprendió a tocar guitarra por su cuenta, primero experimentando con el Tres cubano. Entre la guitarra y la batería el salto al rock fue inmediato. A los 15 años ya componía y tenía su propia banda. A los 18 años comenzó a grabar sencillos y la musa no le ha abandonado desde entonces. Más de 250 composiciones grabadas, más de 28 discos, sin incluir las múltiples colaboraciones con prestigiosos músicos como Don Grusin (tecladista), Abraham Laborier Sr. (bajista), Miguel Bosé y muchos otros; 7 discos de platino, 10 discos de oro, una nominación al Grammy, son testimonio de la calidad y talento de este músico venezolano. “Un planeta de músicos” Siguiendo el consejo de su padre “si quieres ser músico tienes que estudiar”, Frank Quintero deja su floreciente carrera musical en Venezuela en 1979 y se traslada al Berklee College of Music en Boston, la escuela más grande de música contemporánea en el mundo, especializada en jazz y música Americana moderna. Esta fue una oportunidad excelente, que le permitió “entrar en contacto con todas estas personas que son los grandes de la música contemporánea, poder comunicarte con ellos no solo a nivel musical sino a nivel humano es el mejor premio.” “Las escuelas de música en los EEUU te permi-

ten el roce con músicos de todas partes de mundo. Es como yo digo, un planeta de músicos, lo único que se hace es música 24 horas al día. Estas tocando todo el tiempo.” El sitio perfecto para un talento como el de Quintero. “Cuando yo llegué siendo la estrella en Venezuela, resulta que allí todos los alumnos eran así. La experiencia, ese estimulo te ayuda a crecer, te metes en ese tren. Aprendes cosas que no están en los libros.” De Berklee salió graduado de Músico profesional y con un bagaje de experiencias y de contactos que le han permitido desarrollar una carrera musical extensa, polifacética y orientada 100% a expresar su talento a través de la composición, la interpretación y la formación de nuevas generaciones de músicos. “La inspiración es motivación” “Mucha gente habla de la inspiración. Yo digo que la inspiración es motivación” dice Quintero, y pasa a relatar ejemplos de situaciones que le han motivado a escribir una canción, a plasmar en música y letra las sensaciones que lleva dentro. “Puede ser que estemos aquí hablando y en el ambiente este sonando algo que yo no le estoy prestando atención, pero mi subconsciente sí. Y luego lo empiezo a silbar. Crees que se te está ocurriendo y es que lo oíste antes. O de repente te encuentras un amigo, te echa un cuento y de allí se genera una

idea para una canción. O ves una película hermosa y sales de ahí directo a escribir. Esa es una forma de inspirarse”. “Otra forma es componer ‘tailor made’ cuando te dicen: necesito una canción para mañana Y te tienes que sentar y sacar algo. O como cuando escribes comerciales. Te dan un resumen del tema y a partir de ahí escribes.” A lo largo de su extensa carrera, Quintero ha experimentado diferentes motivaciones para escribir sus canciones; cada una tiene un cuento. Como cuando estaba despechado mientras grababa un disco en Trinidad y escribió ‘Todo pasará: “pensé: esto tiene que pasar, no puedes estar así toda la vida. Entonces bajé y les dije a todos vamos a grabar esta canción. La escribí ahí, para mí mismo. Me dicen que ahora la usan para talleres de autoayuda.” Una de sus canciones más famosas, ‘La Dama de la ciudad’, surgió de su deseo de escribir algo muy venezolano, influenciado por su aprendizaje con el Maestro Aldemaro Romero y su Onda Nueva: “Yo traía toda esa información que Aldemaro me había enseñado, que el joropo llanero, el central, la quirpa, la bandola. Decidí hacer un vals. Entonces hice la música, pero la letra, ¿de qué escribo? Resulta que mis abuelas eran de Barlovento. Mi abuela paterna me tenía muy consentido y mi otra abuela era super alegre. Entonces les pregunté, como

Esto es glamoroso, te abre muchas puertas, pero cuando todo el mundo se va a dormir, el que se queda soy yo. Y si sale mal también es culpa mía. Siempre he sido discreto. Para darle el ejemplo a mis hijos. Mi hijo que es músico le dije ‘tienes que estudiar’ igual que hizo mi papá conmigo ‘te apoyo en tu carrera, pero tienes que estudiar’.” Podría pensarse que en 4 décadas de carrera artística ha hecho todo lo posible. Sin embargo, Quintero sigue teniendo pendientes: “Escribir o tocar con esos a quienes admiro más. Por ejemplo con Sting. Estoy cerca.”

Hay acceso a nomenclatura y herramientas, pero eso no necesariamente te hace un buen compositor, porque ese talento viene contigo.” “Pero si puedes llegar a entender el proceso, los pasos, ya sabes cómo se hace y puedes ser un compositor como esos que hacen muchas canciones porque tienen las herramientas. Hoy en día hay sintetizadores que lo prendes tocas un botón y suena una sinfónica y puedes componer. Pero no sabes que con esta mano haces un acorde de 5 notas, de 3 o de 2. O no sabes que los acordes se forman por el primer grado, el tercero, el quinto y etc. El que sepa eso está en otro nivel.” “Escribir canciones para otros requiere una preparación diferente” Escuchar sus canciones en voces de otros intérpretes es muy diferente. “A veces hay cosas que me parecen horrorosas, pero hay otras que no. Es buenísimo, porque es como otros la ven y la escuchan. “Canción para ti” tiene versiones en salsa, bolero, reggaetón, etc. Hay versiones increíbles como la de Cristian Castro.” “Escribir canciones para otros requiere una preparación diferente”. En especial Quintero se esmera en conocer y tratar al intérprete, para conectarse con su registro, con su personalidad y componer con un propósito específico. Ha escrito canciones para Kiara, Elisa Rego, Pandora, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Ismael Miranda entre otros. Con todos ha establecido rela-

fue su juventud. Para ellas fue maravilloso contarme como era el interior (la provincia). Una camisa costaba 12 bolívares y en las vacaciones la gente de Caracas iba y se hacían unas fiestas increíbles, y los muchachos, los pobladores tenían que reunir para comprarse la camisa para poder impresionar las muchachas que llegaban emperifolladas. Entonces ahí está, la muchacha llega de la ciudad y el muchacho del campo se enamora de ella y ella ni lo vio.” Así salió la letra de una de las canciones más emblemáticas de su carrera, incluida en versión de jazz en el disco ‘The Hang’ con Don Grusin, nominado al Grammy. Quintero a veces hace primero la música, a veces hace primero la letra. Como todo músico genial, a veces tiene la sensación de que le dictan qué escribir. “Últimamente estoy escribiendo ambas cosas a la vez. Lo que hago es ponerle nombre y de ahí para abajo. Para componer tú puedes decir hoy no. Pero si viene una idea tienes que ponerla. Estas ejerciendo todo el tiempo y tratando de reinventarte, es interesante porque estás buscando ponerle elementos nuevos dentro del lenguaje que la gente está esperando.” Cada músico tiene su propia estructura, su firma, que para el oído educado le permite identificar el origen de la composición. “Esa fórmula hay que respetarla y cuidarla. Es intuitivo, no es que lo hice así a propósito, sino que así escribo yo.” “Estoy rescatando eso de componer con el piano

boyfriend or a Girlfriend it’s probably one of the titles, if I may called it that, that we adolescence want more. The simple fact of calling someone ours is just so satisfying, and that little mark of territory deposits confidence on us in a one that we cannot explain, it is weird. Some may say is love, but other just demand that it is just pure craziness; it depends on how you look at the glass either half empty or half full. The truth is that dating is beautiful and rather heartwarming having a person there having your back, watching over you and your stupidness, a person that takes care of you as if they were your parents , that person takes on many roles: like a chef if you do not know how to cook , your chauffeur if you do not drive, your best friend of course, and let’s not forget being their cheerleader at all of your games, they are and infinity and one combination because every couple is different. The feeling of being loved is something that that we cannot put into words so indescribable someone to laugh and have full confidence of being you with, sounds wonderful right? But what happens when they go to the same school? Is it a good idea? I know most of us have walk by hall during switch and have seen those couples, that some of them we cannot explain. We see them kissing and some may thing it is the most beautiful thing, but others get grossed out and probably want to throw up everything they had for lunch, but have you have thought what happens when the fairytale ends? When the prince is no longer seeking his princess? After they did everything possible and impossible to see each other even if it was five seconds before the bell rings? You have never pictured it right, because you never think about those think after it actually happens to you, and you can imagine that if I am talking about it I have some experience, my own story. Well I sure do, and I am going to tell you about it. He was my first boyfriend, my first love, my fist illusion with love, so my fist kiss, my best friend, my support system and in that little time he became a part of me. We went out for seven months and they were without a question one of the most beautiful times in my life and I thank him for that, always have and always will. Sadly and it did no work out. I’m not going to lie the day we broke up I felt like my world collapsed in front of my eyes that everything was going against like nothing made sense, I know I seems really excessive but it was like that. My uncle died a week before this, so I was not very well, emotionally either. I needed him more than anything and the emotions overwhelm me, I wanted to called him so many times, wanted to run up to him a just hug him. But the most difficult thing was knowing that I had to see him every day, it became my goal to avoid him, until I felt comfortable again and I realized that it wasn’t one of my best moves. The year ended and we went off to summer vacation but I didn’t last long, be came back and guest what? No, the aliens didn’t take him to another galaxy. But I can give you a really good advice, choose wisely your ex’s are forever!

n novio o novia, es probablemente una de los títulos si lo puedo llamar así mas codiciados por los adolescentes, ahora. El simple hecho de poder decir ella es o él es, esa pequeña marca de territorio nos hace sentir muy bien y nos llena de una manera muy extraña, algunos dirían que es amor y otros pura locura. Depende del cristal con que uno lo quiera ver. Lo cierto es que el noviazgo es hermoso… Tener esa persona allí apoyándote, que te quiera, te mime, te cuide, y aguante tu mal humor y hasta tus desprecios cuando estas amargado es reconfortante y más saber que lo tienes ahí 24/7; esa persona cumple muchas funciones: es tu amigo, tu confidente, tu mama y papa en algunos casos, tu chef si no sabes cocinar, y tu chofer si no sabes manejar, ser porrista en sus juegos, hay infinitas combinaciones, pues cada pareja es diferente. Sentirse amado es simplemente algo que las palabras no pueden describir, alguien con quien reírse a carcajadas y tener la confianza plena de ser tú sin el qué dirán que a esta edad, influye mucho en nosotros los adolescentes. Suena maravilloso y es casi a un cuento de hadas, pero que pasa cuando los novios estudian en la misma escuela? Es una buena idea? Creo que a todos nos ha pasado que vamos caminando por los pasillos del colegio y nos encontramos con parejas sin iguales, entre besos y coqueteos, muchos pensaran que es la cosa más tierna del mundo y a otros se les revolverá el estómago, pero, se han puesto a pensar que pasa cuando la magia se apaga? Que pasa cuando el príncipe ya no busca a su princesa para darle su beso de los buenos días? Después de que hacen todo lo posible e imposible por verse así sea cinco segundos durante el cambio de clases y todavía llegar a tiempo al próximo periodo? Nunca lo habían pensado, porque uno no lo piensa hasta que le pasa y se imaginaran que si yo estoy escribiendo esto es porque debo tener alguna experiencia, mi propia historia, pues si y se las voy a contar. Fue mi primer novio, mi primer amor como dirían muchos, mi primera ilusión… me gusta llamarlo así. Mi primer beso y sin duda alguna, mi mejor amigo. Salimos por siete meses y fueron sin duda uno de los meses más hermosos de toda mi vida y le doy gracias por eso, siempre. Lamentablemente las cosas no funcionaron. No voy a mentir el día que terminamos sentí que todo mi mundo me caía encima y que nada tenía sentido, es exagerado pero fue así. Mi tío falleció una semana antes, entonces yo no estaba muy bien emocionalmente tampoco, lo necesitaba más que nunca y no estaba, cuantas veces no quise levantar el teléfono y llamarlo, o salir corriendo y abrazarlo. Pero basta con la novela lo más difícil de todo fue saber que lo tenía que ver, todos los días a la misma hora en el mismo lugar, se convirtió en mi meta esquivarlo a un nivel que podría ser considerado deporte extremo, hasta que se me paso todo y me di cuenta del error que había cometido, tener un novio en el colegio y en tu mismo grado. Ese año termino y fuimos de vacaciones, pero dicen que de lo bueno poco, por eso volvimos y adivinen que? No, no se lo llevaron los extraterrestres a marte, ni fuera de la galaxia, ya, ya, es un chiste. Un consejo? Escojan bien a los ex porque son para toda la vida.

ALUD-ando a todos una vez mas y como siempre, contarles sobre lo último de los secretos naturales para el mejoramiento de la salud. Espero que hayan disfrutado mi último artículo acerca del chocolate y sus mega tónicos antioxidantes. Esta vez, quiero hablarles acerca de una de mis SuperFoods favoritas, la famosa “Maca”. La Maca tiene poderosos efectos en cuerpo y mente, además de un gran poder afrodisiaco. Les voy a compartir todo acerca de sus increíbles beneficios y porque les recomiendo consumirla. Les contaré como nos puede asistir en nuestro sistema endocrino, como nos puede ayudar a regular las hormonas para lograr ese balance que tanto buscamos. Especialmente con estos tiempo en el cual hombres y mujeres tienen que lidiar con altos niveles de estrés en sus vidas laborales. La Maca es una raíz estilo tubérculo de la familia del rábano, descubierta por los Incas y los españoles que crece a una gran elevación en las montañas de los Andes peruanos. Su verdadero nombre es: Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon. Suena algo complicado y difícil de recordar así que, mejor la llamamos “Maca”. Esta poderosa hierba contiene una ola de nutrientes y minerales como: el Calcio, Potasio, Hierro Silicio y otros más. Ya podrán entender porque los Incas lo tomaban a diario para mantener la salud, mayor vitalidad, y protegerse de fatiga, prevenir enfermedades como la anemia y osteoporosis. Ahora que saben un poco más acerca de la

poderosa Maca, les contaré porque nos puede ayudar a balancear las hormonas en mujeres y hombres. Si les cuento que esta raíz posee en su composición, sustancias naturales que estimulan la Pituitaria y el Hipotálamo me creen?, pues créanlo. Estas glándulas a su vez, activan los ovarios, adrenales, testículos, tiroides y páncreas para regresarlos a su funcionamiento saludables, además de producir un balance hormonal. A two-time Grammy winner and nine-time Grammy nominee, her recent album Una Mujer Que Canta has just been nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category of “Best Salsa Album of the Year.” The show starts at 8:00 p.m. and admission and parking are free. Born in Havana, Cuba as Albita Rodriguez, the internationally renowned recording artistis simply known as “Albita.” A powerful voice and star presence from the start, Albita performed regularly at Cuba’s top hotels and nightclubs introducing her “compadres” to a new twist on their beloved Cuban folk music. In 1988 she released her debut album Habrá Música Guajira, and a second album Si se da la siembra followed a year later. Looking to expand her recording and touring options she defected to the United States via Columbia in 1993, making Miami her new home. If you can’t work due to a disability, Social Security can help

f you are disabled and you’re no longer able to work, you should learn how Social Security can help you. Disability is something most people do not like to think about; however, the unfortunate reality is this: the chances that you will become disabled are probably far greater than you realize. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a more than one in four chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age. Social Security pays benefits to people with disabilities through the Social Security disability insurance program, which is financed by Social Security taxes. If you qualify, you can receive a monthly disability benefit from Social Security for as long as your disability keeps you from working. The amount of your benefit is based on your average lifetime earnings. Potential Medicare coverage is dependent on several factors and usually starts after you receive disability cash benefits for 24 months. When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn credits. The number of credits you need to qualify for disability benefits depends on your age, and some of the work must be recent. For example, if you become disabled after age 31, you need to have worked at least a total of 10 years, including five of those having been worked within the past 10 years. But if you become disabled before age 24, you need only one and a half years of work in the past three years. If you have a disability that keeps you from working, the time to get started with your application is now. That’s because it takes time to determine whether you qualify for benefits. It usually takes about three to five months for a medical decision from the state agency that evaluates your condition. If your application is approved, your first Social Security disability payment will be made for the sixth full month after the date we determine that your disability began. Given the time it can take, it’s in your best interest to do everything you can to speed up the process. The best first step is for you to read our online publication, Disability Benefits, at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs. It will tell you all about the process, including the information you will need to apply for benefits. Then, take advantage of our online disability starter kits. You will find them on our disability website at www.socialsecurity.gov/disability. From that page, simply select the option to apply for benefits online, and on that page you will find the disability starter kits. There is one kit for children and one for adults. Each kit is available in both English and Spanish. The starter kits help you begin the process by providing information about the specific documents and the information that we will request from you. La Asociación de Comercio Internacional de la Florida ( Florida Foreign Trade Association, FFTA por sus siglas en ingles) convocó a centenares de compañías del sur de la Florida al XVII Alliance Business Expo 2013, en el Miami Free Zone ubicado en Doral. El evento contó con la participación especial del Gobernador de la Florida, Rick Scott, quién habló en su mayoría sobre la recuperación económica del estado en comparación a otros estados de Estados Unidos en los últimos meses. Felicitó a todos los empresarios y comentó que gracias a ellos se han logrado crear mas de 365.000 nuevos empleos. Después de su discurso, el Gobernador entregó varios reconocimientos a diferentes empresas y Cámaras de Comercio de la Florida. Al evento, también se encontraban los oficiales electos de Doral. El Alcalde Luigi Boria, aprovechó la ocasión para destacar la participación y el interés de los empresarios en Doral y la importancia de la comunidad hispana. El evento también sirvió de escenario para la muestra de manifestaciones culturales en el marco de la celebración de la Herencia Hispana, en el que participaron niños, jóvenes y adultos vestidos en llamativos trajes típicos de varios países demostrando su gran talento musical.

Miami International Mall y la ciudad del Doral celebraron la novena celebración de la Herencia Hispana. Fueron dos días cargados de desfiles de moda y entretenimiento para toda la familia y donde se experimentó la diversidad de culturas y sabores de diferentes países de América Latina. El viernes 27 de septiembre se realizó “La Noche de Honor”, donde todos las donaciones fueron a beneficio de la Fundación Simon Youth y la Fundación Live Like Bella. Durante el evento, se reconocio la labor en la sociedad latina de ciertas personalidades hispanas a través de una espectacular presentación con la moda más actual del momento. Los galardonados fueron Daniela Pelaez, con el premio “Jr. Hispanic Community Leader”; Deise Grando-Villar, como “Hispanic Health Professional”; el locutor Enrique Santos como “Hispanic Artist/Celebrity”; Nubielena MedinaGomez se llevo el premio como “Small Business Leader”; Mireya Kilmon como “Hispanic Philanthropist” y por ultimo, Maria Cristina Regueiro con el premio “Hispanic Educator”. El sábado 28, la celebración continuó con muchas actividades para la familia, incluyendo música auténtica folclórica y danza de fuego, entretenimiento en vivo y un desfile de vestidos de trajes típicos.
