l Presupuesto Operativo preparado por la Administración de la Ciudad de Doral trae buenas noticias para los residentes. El crecimiento de la ciudad y la recuperación de la economía han incrementado el valor de las propiedades a niveles cercanos a los del 2008, ampliando la base impositiva y permitiendo así que puedan incluirse para el próximo año proyectos largamente esperados por la comunidad. El Tasador Municipal de Miami-Dade, Sr. Pedro J. García, informó al Alcalde Luigi Boria que el valor de las propiedades para este año ha sido establecido en $10,073,000.00, que representa un incremento cercano al 7% en comparación al valor estimado en 2014. Una base imponible más amplia permitió que el Concejo de Doral mantuviera la tasa de amillaramiento para el Año Fiscal (FY) 20152016 en 1.9280 ($1.928 por cada $1000 de valor de las propiedades, la segunda más baja del Condado), sin mermar la posibilidad de incluir múltiples proyectos importantes en el presupuesto propuesto. La “Tasa de Amillaramiento” es uno de los componentes de los impuestos Ad Valorem. Determina el porcentaje retenido por Miami-Dade que es devuelto a las municipalidades independientes para su operación, una vez que han retenido la contribución correspondiente a los servicios que provee el Condado: vialidad; bomberos y rescate; escuelas y bibliotecas públicas, etc.

EL PLAN ESTRATÉGICO: FACTOR CRÍTICO DE ÉXITO

“Las sesiones de planificación estratégica del pasado mes de junio tuvieron un impacto muy positivo en el presupuesto propuesto. Permitieron crear un mapa con los objetivos específicos que el Alcalde y los Concejales visualizan y desean hacer realidad para beneficio de los residentes” explicó el Administrador Municipal, Edward Rojas, al finalizar su presentación del presupuesto propuesto. Los objetivos a corto y largo plazo fueron incluidos “manteniendo la responsabilidad fiscal sin desatender las necesidades de nuestra creciente comunidad,” dijo Rojas. Agregó que el plan estratégico a 5 años determina claramente las etapas y fechas para atender ordenadamente las prioridades y alcanzar las metas y visión de la ciudad. EL Alcalde Boria considera que las sesiones de planificación “prepararon el marco adecuado para trabajar en la consecución de las metas y completar la visión de la comunidad para nuestra gran ciudad.” La Concejal Christi Fraga opina que “la planificación estratégica es sumamente importante. Las sesiones este año fueron mucho más efectivas. Pudimos crear una visión coordinada y acordamos las prioridades. Así la administración podrá ejecutar los proyectos e incorporar también las prioridades del Concejo.”

¿PAGARÁN MÁS IMPUESTOS LOS RESIDENTES?

El valor de las propiedades en Doral ha subido, por lo tanto, aunque no haya cambiado la tasa de amillaramiento en los últimos años, se espera que los residentes verán un incremento en el monto de los impuestos a la propiedad que les serán retenidos. Esas son las malas noticias. Las buenas noticias son que la Ciudad espera generar cerca de $53 millones en

ingresos, que se invertirán en mejoras de la infraestructura de parques y vías y en ampliación de los servicios de policía. Estas inversiones forman parte de los componentes principales del Presupuesto Propuesto para el FY 20152016, que alcanza la cifra de $71,461,388. “Queremos poner ese dinero a trabajar. Si beneficia a la comunidad queremos que se haga realidad pronto” dijo la Vice Alcalde Sandra Ruiz. “Deseo que no solamente los oficiales electos, sino también los líderes comunitarios se unan a nosotros en esta misión. Así podremos trabajar para proporcionar esta infraestructura a nuestros residentes.”

¿DE DÓNDE SALE LA CIFRA DEL PRESUPUESTO?

Cuando la burbuja inmobiliaria explotó en el 2008 el valor de las propiedades de Doral se redujo cerca del 20%. Esta época coincidió con una aceleración súbita en el número de residentes, que pasó de 31,000 en 2009 a cerca de 46,000 en 2010. Esa tendencia no parece mermar. Aun con la crisis, la Ciudad continuó teniendo un presupuesto cercano a los $50 millones, pero la inversión en infraestructura tuvo que frenarse para evitar incrementar los impuestos. El único gasto importante en esos años fue la culminación de las obras del edificio del Ayuntamiento, un gasto que se reflejó en el presupuesto 2010 (ver tabla anexa) “La gente paga sus impuestos y quiere ver sus efectos, ver en qué se han invertido” comentó Ruiz. “Hemos crecido mucho desde 2003; Nuestro primer presupuesto fue de $23 millones”. Con esa cifra, el Primer Concejo pudo comenzar a proveer mejores servicios públicos a los 22,000 residentes de la recién creada Ciudad. Hoy en día la población de Doral se ha duplicado, continua creciendo y con ella la demanda por mayores servicios con igual o mejor nivel de calidad al que los residentes están acostumbrados. Mas parques, mejor policía, mejores vías; esas son las solicitudes constantes de los residentes de Doral. Ruiz afirma que “es hora de acelerar la inversión en proyectos de infraestructura. Tenemos los fondos. Por un tiempo nos preocupaba que los ingresos de la Ciudad de Doral continuaran siendo constantes en el tiempo. Afortunadamente eso no ha sido problema; hemos seguido creciendo al paso estimado; sin embargo, considero que la administración tiene que ser extremadamente responsable y actuar pronto para hacer realidad proyectos importantes que están pendientes. Esto se ha reflejado en este presupuesto.”

Los días 17 y 18 de agosto se realizarán las sesiones públicas de revisión detallada del presupuesto propuesto. Ambas serán desde las 10 am a las 5 pm en el ayuntamiento. Se fijó la Primera Discusión del presupuesto para el martes 8 de septiembre a las 6 pm. La Segunda Discusión aprobatoria para el presupuesto definitivo será el miércoles 23 de septiembre a las 6pm. Se exhorta a la comunidad a asistir y participar con sus comentarios e ideas. Las opiniones de los ciudadanos son muy valiosas para los miembros del Concejo y el personal de la Ciudad.

udget season is in full swing, bringing good news for City of Doral residents. The growth of the city and the recovery of economy have risen the tax base assessment to levels close to those of 2008, allowing the administration to propose a budget including the execution of long awaited projects for the community. Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser Mr. Pedro J. Garcia informed Mayor Luigi Boria of the gross taxable value of properties in Doral being established at $ 10,073,000.00, which reflects an increment of around 7% compared to the value from 2014. It allowed the Council to keep the millage rate for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015-2016 unchanged at 1.9280 ($1.928 per each $1000 of property value, the second lowest in the County), without endangering the possibility of including many projects important for the community on the proposed budget. The “Millage Rate” is one of the components of the Ad Valorem Tax. It determines the total amount retained by Miami-Dade County, that is returned to incorporated municipalities for Edward Rojas their operation, after retaining the percentages of contribution for services provided by the County, such as certain Roads, Fire and Rescue; Public Schools; Public Libraries, etc.

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROVIDES FRAMEWORK

“The strategic planning sessions in June had a very positive impact on the proposed budget, as it helped us establish a roadmap for specific goals that the Mayor and Council envision, and hope to achieve in the future to address the resident’s needs” explained City Manager Edward Rojas, after delivering his presentation on the Proposed Budget. Short and long term objectives were included “maintaining fiscal responsibility and addressing the needs of our ever-growing community“, said Rojas, and added that the 5-year strategy map developed determined very clearly the timeline to address priorities in order to accomplish the goals of the community. Mayor Boria considers those strategic planning sessions “provided a framework for the work that needs to be accomplished, to achieve the vision of the community of our great City.” Councilwoman Christy Fraga agrees: “strategic planning is always very important. I think the way we did it was more effective this year and we were able to show a more cohesive view and priority set. It allows the administration to run with their projects but incorporate a lot of the council’s priorities as well.”

WILL RESIDENTS PAY MORE TAXES?

Given that the property value has increased in Doral for this fiscal year, even though the millage rate has not changed in the past four years, it is expected that residents will see an increment on the amount of property taxes they will be paying. Those are the bad news. The good news are that the City is expected to generate nearly $53 million in revenue that will be put to work towards capital improvements in roads, parks and police services, investments that are key components of the $71,461,388 budget proposed for FY 2015-2016. “We want to put this money to work and if it is good for the community we need to get it done” said Vice Mayor Sandra Ruiz. “I hope that not only those who are elected officials but leaders throughout the community would join us on this mission and we will be able to deliver the infrastructure to our residents.”

HOW MUCH IS THE PROPOSED BUDGET?

The real state crisis that started in 2008 dropped around 20% of the value for Doral properties. Those were the years when Doral population had a ‘growth spurt’ going from 31,000 residents in 2009 to almost 46,000 in 2010, and counting. During that time, the City continued keeping the budget around $50 million, but big infrastructure investments had to be slowed down to avoid increasing taxes. The only splurge on those years was the completion of the Government Center, an expense that was reflected on the budget of 2010. (see attached table) “People are paying taxes and they want to see their effect” said Vice Mayor Sandra Ruiz. “We have come a long way [since 2003]. Our first budget was $23 million”. It allowed the council to start providing services, upon incorporation, for a community of merely 22,000 residents. Nowadays the population of Doral has doubled, continues growing and demands more services with the same quality they are used to receive. More parks, more police, better roads, are the constant plea of Doral residents. Ruiz affirms that “it is time we accelerate some of the capital improvement projects being that we do have the funds. There was some concern as whether or not the City of Doral income would continue to come in a streamline and it has. We have been growing in a pace that have been contemplated, but at the present time I believe that administration needs to be extremely responsible and move those projects forward. It has been reflected in the budget.”

WHAT’S IN THE BUDGET?

The proposed $71,461,388 for FY 2015-2016 is divided 67% for operating costs and 33% Capital Improvements. It will be distributed as follows: • Public Safety 31% : to increase police force to 2.24 officers for every 1,000 residents, more police vehicles and expansion of police station • Parks 29.9 %: continuation of construction of 114th Avenue Park, scheduled to be completed in spring 2016. General Government 7.1 % • Community Development: 8.4 %: community education initiatives and communication efforts. • City Services 3.6 % • Policy and Administration 3.2% “The impressive growth of the City’s population has increased resident’s needs, resulting in projects being efficiently expedited to meet the demands of our flourishing community” shared Mayor Boria. “Projects that are vital to our resident’s quality of life, such as roads

continue to move forward and are part of a capital improvement plan. The goal is to complete the projects with responsible planning efforts and support from administration and Council. Certain projects such as the Police Department’s substation require that we act now, as in this case, we could potentially lose free land by August 2016 according to our agreement with the State of Florida. Another area that is in high demand in our great City is more parks. The development of parks is on track and following the timeline that has been in the process for the past two years and now approaching completion dates. Many exciting things are currently in the works for Doral as progress continues to thrive!”

RESIDENTS PARTICIPATION ENCOURAGED ON BUDGET WORKSHOPS AND HEARINGS

On August 17th and 18th, from 10 am to 5 pm, the City will hold budget workshops where residents can participate on the review process of line items included,

to complete the preparation of the detailed budget to be discussed during the First Reading on Tuesday September 8th at 6 pm. The participation of the community in the workshops is of utmost importance, to enrich the discussion and provide input for the Council and staff. The Second and final reading of the budget will take place on Wednesday September 23rd at 6pm.

The hectic mornings are back

Back to School = More Traffic

lthough it is true that when comparing Doral’s traffic with that of some Latin American cities like Caracas, Bogota, Sao Paulo or Mexico City, it seems like ours is a ridiculous problem, yet it is also true that one of the so called best cities to live in the United States, should offer its inhabitants better traffic alternatives. If you are one of the persons that suffer with Doral’s traffic inclemency, if you have spent more time than you can remember on 107th or on 87th Ave, and if minutes have become hours between our city’s 74th, 25th and 36th streets, we remind you that the return to school is very close, which will complicate morning traffic even more. And maybe it is not about pointing out failures or finding responsible parties, because even though the State of Florida, Miami-Dade County and Doral’s Major’s Office are responsible for our city’s roadways, reducing traffic impact in a place that is in the midst of a demographic and commercial expansion is not an easy task. The population growth Doral has experienced in the past years has also created an increase in school enrollment. Many choose to live in our city because of our schools’ high academic level. Therefore, it is easy to understand that when the new school year begins there will be even more traffic; so what can we do?

THE STREETS

One of Doral’s most important streets is 74th street, because it provides local and regional connectivity for Miami-Dade County. It connects the Florida Turnpike to State Road 826/Palmetto Expressway and finally, to Miami Beach as an extension of 934. It also provides connection to the Palmetto Metrorail station. Frank Calderon, Communications Director for Miami-Dade’s Public Work and Waste Management (PWWM), pointed out that the department is currently working on the 74th street project between 114th and 107th Avenue, where they are carrying out excavation, compacting and leveling activities. And all traffic detour mechanisms were previously established for these activities. Calderon reminded us that this project is about expanding the existing road to a six lane street, that will include bicycle lanes, sidewalks, curbs, and ditches including drainage system, as well as all related traffic signaling, illumination and landscaping.

“Also on 74th street, but between 87th avenue and the Palmetto, we have been coordinating with the corresponding public service companies the relocation of their existing lines before the beginning of the construction activities, as well as the modification of service points for the irrigation lines being installed as part of this project”, explained Calderon while informing that this task is very similar to the work that is been carried out between 114th and 107th avenues. He expects traffic improvements with these two projects. Calderon also referred to 97th avenue, between 70th and 74th streets. “This is a joint participation agreement financed by Miami-Dade, but managed by the City of Doral. The construction is currently underway with approximately 50% of the job already completed, and includes a four-lane road, drainage, public lighting, sidewalks, curbs and ditches, as well as bicycle lanes. It is expected to be finished by October 2015. The completion of 25th street’s viaduct is another hope for Frank Calderon improving Doral’s traffic. The Florida’s Department of Transportation (FDOT) is in charge of it. It is estimated to be completed by April 2016 and it is expected to ease the circulation of heavy trucks that go through Doral towards the airport, as well as the daily commute of over 150 thousand people that work in the city but do not live in it. For the coming month of September 2015 Miami-Dade County is supposed to finish the improvements on 58th street between 102nd and 92nd avenues. While the City of Doral is supposed

to finish by that same month, the construction of a bicycle and pedestrian lane on 50th street from 112nd to 107th avenue.

THE POLICE

Despite the many traffic solutions projected, none will be ready before the return to school, so Doral’s Police Department has already scheduled a two-week operation to coordinate the morning traffic and the hours in which children and youngsters get out of school. Lieutenant Orlando Sanchez from Doral’s Police informed so, he pointed out that, usually, the first two weeks of school are critical because parents must get used again to respect the places established to leave and pick up the children. “It is necessary for the parents to resume the school routine, and our officers will cooperate with this.” “Our officers will be posted around all of Doral’s school areas. We are thinking of posting two officers in each school and in some, where traffic circulation is higher, such as the Dr. Rolando Espinoza School, we will have up to four police men helping to mobilize traffic”, explained Sanchez. Lieutenant Sanchez also explained that even though this mechanism is programmed for the first two weeks, it could be extended as long as the traffic needs require so. “At this time there are many road constructions underway, so as police officers we have the duty to make traffic less congested and prevent traffic accidents”.

Vuelven las mañanas agitadas

i bien es cierto que cuando comparamos el tráfico de Doral con el de algunas ciudades latinoamericanas como Caracas, Bogotá, Sao Paulo o la Ciudad de México, este pareciera ser un problema irrisorio; también es cierto que una ciudad catalogada como una de las mejores para vivir en Estados Unidos, debería ofrecer a sus habitantes mejores alternativas viales. Si usted es de las personas que sufre las inclemencias del tráfico en Doral, si ha pasado más tiempo del que puede recordar en la 107 o en la 87 avenida y si los minutos se le han hecho horas entre las calles 74, la 25 y la 36 de nuestra ciudad, le informamos que el regreso a clases está muy cerca, lo que va a complicar aún más el tráfico en las mañanas. Y quizás nos se trate de repartir culpas o buscar responsables, porque tanto el Estado de la Florida, como el Condado de Miami-Dade y la Alcaldía de Doral tienen injerencia sobre las vías de comunicación en nuestra ciudad, sin embargo, disminuir el impacto del tráfico vehicular en una localidad en plena expansión demográfica y comercial no es tarea sencilla. El crecimiento poblacional que ha experimentado Doral en los últimos años también ha impactado el aumento de la matrícula escolar, pues son muchos quienes escogen vivir en nuestra ciudad gracias al alto nivel académico de nuestras escuelas, por lo cual es sencillo entender que cuando empiecen las clases habrá más tráfico, entonces, qué podemos hacer?.

LAS CALLES

Una de las vías más importantes de Doral es la 74 calle, pues proporciona conectividad local y regional para el condado de Miami-Dade, ya que conecta el Turnpike de la Florida a la Carretera Estatal 826/Palmetto Expressway y finalmente, Miami Beach como una continuación de la 934. También proporciona una conexión con la estación de Metrorail Palmetto. Frank Calderon, director de comunicaciones del Departamento de Obras Públicas del condado de Miami-Dade (PWWM, por sus siglas en inglés), señaló que en el proyecto de la 74 calle entre la 114 Ave. y la 107 Ave. se están realizando actividades de excavación, compactación y nivelación. he beginning of school year 2015-2016 is right around the corner and it is bringing exciting changes to the administration of Public Schools in Doral. The most important of those changes are the appointments of Mrs. Debbie F. Saumell as new Principal at Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center (EBT) and Mrs. Martha M. Muñoz at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center (DRE). The announcement was made in the month of July and both ladies have started right away to get involved with their school’s communities to have all details ready by August 24th.

Former Principal at Rockway Elementary, Mrs. Saumell brings to EBT her experience in education and as administrator, along with her enthusiasm and energy to achieve great goals. She says the reception at the school has been “fantastic. Everyone is so friendly and the energy is incredible. I love the energy in this community.”

with the staff of administrators and teachers she has found at EBT but also with the PTA, the parents and the community. “Being involved is the best thing you can do for your child. It makes the process better working together. Teamwork ensures children get the best possible education. I look forward to working with the parents and I think it is going to be wonderful.” At the moment she does not contemplate introducing changes on the school procedures that have been in place for many years and the community is used to follow. “I am new here; I want to start getting a feel for the school. If we need to make any changes they will be in the best interest of the children, doing whatever is needed to make sure they are successful and have great achievements.” She sends a welcome message to all parents and children that will attend EBT this school year: “I look forward to a fantastic year full of energy and wonderful successes. Upon the retirement of Mrs. Marie Caceres at the end of the school year, all parents and students of DRE were expectant of the appointment of their new principal and the news of Mrs. Muñoz arrival have been very well received within the community. “I have had the opportunity to meet some of the parents, staff and students. They have welcomed me very graciously, and the City of Doral has reached out to work with us this school year and providing the school assistance that might be necessary. Everyone has been really gracious to me and I am very grateful for that.” Before her designation for DRE, she was Principal at Kinloch Park Elementary, and before that Muñoz led one of the most traditional schools in Miami, Shenandoah Elementary. “I have been administrator in schools that are very similar in size and demographics and even configuration [to DRE] and the difference is basically the location. Doral is a growing city that provides a good energy of hope for the future and for our students.” Although she does not plan to introduce any specific changes in operation right away, she is open to possibilities in the future: “Just with the change of principal, there is inherent change. But at the same time being new to the school I really need to see where growth is possible and work accordingly to that.” Mrs. Muñoz looks forward to working together with the parents for the wellbeing of the children at

MORE CHOICES FOR DORAL SCHOOLS

Besides welcoming new principals at two of the biggest schools in the City of Doral, the community also celebrates the opening of the long awaited Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, which comes to alleviate the distribution of students in the area. Mrs. Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg, former lead teacher at Sunset Elementary, was appointed principal of this school at the beginning of 2015 and has handled all admission process for new students, and coordinated all tasks in order to have the school ready to enter operation on August 24th. The school was built through private funds but will be operated by Miami-Dade Public Schools, offering a rigorous double curriculum on International Studies with choices of Spanish or Portuguese, in addition to the regular classes taught in English. The success of this “Comprehensive Dual Curriculum” has been proven to promote the development of fully bilingual and bicultural individuals.

Martha M. Muñoz para Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center (DRE). Sus designaciones fueron anunciadas en el mes de Julio. Desde entonces, ambas han trabajado arduamente para involucrarse en las comunidades de sus escuelas y tener todos los detalles a punto para el inicio de clases el próximo 24 de Agosto.

Antes de venir a EBT, Saumell fue Directora de Rockway Elementary. Todos son muy amables y tienen una energía increíble. Me encanta la energía de esta comunidad.”

En su escuela anterior obtuvo excelentes resultados académicos y la población del área es similar a Doral; ella confía que tendrá una gestión exitosa como directora en una escuela con mayor cantidad de estudiantes y programas. “Vengo de una escuela estupenda, con un clima muy familiar. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced

Innovative Programs to Enhance Academic Choices in Miami-Dade Public Schools By Maria Alejandra Pulgar @marialepulgar

uperintendent Alberto M. Carvalho announced the innovative programs and academic choices that increase the offer, within Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), for the new school year that starts on August 24th. “We understand that a one-size fits all approach is not effective” declared Carvalho, when he explained the resources that will be implemented to enhance educational experiences and to provide additional security and health services for students in the district.

NEW PROGRAMS AVAILABLE

Carvalho announced 16 additional magnet programs in 12 schools, and 37 choice programs in 30 nonmagnet schools, including Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH). The emphasis was put on STEM programs, destined to spark the interest of students on fields such as robotics, programming, environmental and medical sciences or digital technology. Career academies

will provide students with the opportunity to explore vocational fields while completing their high school education. These new programs increase to more than 500 the choices provided by the MDCPS at all educational levels, for parents to decide what program best suits the abilities and talents of their children. During the past school year, 56.3 % of students in the district were enrolled in choice programs: magnet, nonmagnet, international studies, career academies or charter schools. New programs offered at magnet schools are: National Security Intelligence Studies; Forensic Sciences & Law Enforcement; Legal Studies; Engineering, Robotics, Visual Arts; Medical Health and Environmental Sciences; Digital Media Technology; Communications and Global Trade & Logistics. Non-magnet choice programs include: Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Performing Arts; International Language (Italian) and the academies of Teaching, Cybersecurity and Forensic Science. Career Academies combine a college-preparatory curriculum with a career-themed focus. They allow students to meet high school graduation and college entrance requirements, while obtaining knowledge and skills aligned with priority needs of the community. Students who graduate from career academies can earn college credit and also increase their chances for scholarships, while getting ready to apply for industry certifications.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR SCHOOLS OF CHOICE

Students for these programs, for school year 2015-2016, were assigned through an application process during the months of May and June. Parents interested on admission or transfers can check the MDCPS website for details on schools and contact information. To participate in Nonmagnet choice programs, parents have to contact directly the chosen school for details. Applications for any of the 500+ magnet programs offered at 102 schools in the district, for school year 2016-2017, will be available starting October 1, 2015 until January 15, 2016, at www. yourchoicemiami.org. Parents should check the website for details on requirements.

INNOVATIONS TO IMPROVE SERVICE

Innovative services will provide schools, parents and students tools to increase their levels of interaction, safety and access to information. They include the use of tablets on different subjects and academic levels; a new mobile app for parents to interact with the schools; Wi-Fi and GPS pilot programs in school busses and Flex Stops program for transportation to selected magnet schools. Through the “Learning for Life” Police Explorers Program, high school students will interact with the MDCPS Police Department to learn about careers in Law Enforcement. And a school-based, primary health care clinic will open at Miami Northwestern Senior High School.

NEW ACADEMIC CHOICES AT RRDSH

The only Public High School in Doral, RRDSH, will incorporate to its offer the Global Logistics and Trading and the Teaching Academies, which will come to increase the curriculum choices that currently include Cambridge, Classic Fine Arts and Information and Communications Technology. When being registered at RRDSH, students are given the chance to apply, with recommendation by their previous teachers, to participate on those very rigorous programs in addition to their general education diploma requirements. Besides the enhanced academic experience, successfully approving those programs help students obtain international certifications, college credits and the chance to test for industrial and vocational certifications. The incorporation of broader choices for RRDSH represents a great advantage for the Doral community that counts with a top performing school, nationally ranked, destined exclusively for students who reside in the area. The Annual Back to School BBQ at RRDSH will take place on Saturday August 22nd at 10 am. This is an event open to all residents of the City of Doral. At that event, people will be able to learn more about activities and programs RRDSH has to offer, not only for their high school students but for all community members, through their Community Education Center, including offers on free English and Citizenship courses.

NUEVOS PROGRAMAS

Permiten que los estudiantes completen los requerimientos de graduación de secundaria y admisión universitaria, mientras adquieren conocimientos y habilidades alineadas con las necesidades prioritarias de la comunidad. Los estudiantes graduados de Academias Vocacionales acumulan créditos universitarios e incrementan sus oportunidades de recibir financiamiento educativo, además que pueden aplicar para recibir certificaciones industriales que les permitirán incorporarse al mercado de trabajo.

PROCESO DE APLICACIÓN Y ADMISIÓN

La admisión para los nuevos programas para el año escolar 2015-2016 se realizó durante los meses de Mayo y Junio. En el sitio web del MDCPS están los detalles y contactos de las escuelas que los ofrecen. Los padres interesados en verificar disponibilidad y aplicar para transferir a sus hijos a programas no-magnet deben informarse en la escuela de sus hijos y realizar el trámite directamente con la escuela seleccionada. INNOVACIÓN PARA MEJORAR EL SERVICIO

Servicios innovadores y nuevas aplicaciones proveerán herramientas a las escuelas, padres y estudiantes para mejorar los niveles de interacción, seguridad y acceso a la información. Entre los nuevos programas se encuentra el incremento del uso de tabletas para diferentes cursos y niveles académicos. También está disponible en todas las plataformas móviles una aplicación para que los padres estén en contacto con las escuelas de sus hijos. Otra mejora es la implantación de programas

piloto de red Wi-Fi en los autobuses escolares, aplicación de ubicación satelital y paradas flexibles, estas últimas para proveer transporte a estudiantes de algunas escuelas magnet. El programa “Learning for Life” de la Policía Escolar ofrecerá a estudiantes de secundaria la oportunidad de interactuar con miembros de ese cuerpo para aprender sobre carreras en Seguridad Ciudadana. Y también, una clínica de primeros auxilios comenzara a funcionar en la secundaria Miami Northwestern de Little Haití.

NUEVAS OFERTAS ACADEMICAS EN DORAL

RRDSH, la única secundaria publica de Doral, agregará nuevas opciones al incorporar las academias de Logística y Educación a su oferta curricular que incluye las Academias Cambridge, Artes Clásicas y Comunicaciones y Tecnología de la Información. Al inscribirse en RRDSH los estudiantes recomendados tienen la oportunidad de aplicar a estos rigurosos programas, complementando su educación secundaria general. Aparte de tener una enriquecedora experiencia académica, cuando aprueban satisfactoriamente los requisitos, pueden obtener certificados de Educación Internacional, créditos universitarios y la oportunidad de aplicar para certificaciones industriales y vocacionales. Más opciones académicas en RRDSH representan una gran ventaja para la comunidad de Doral, quienes cuentan con una escuela de alto rendimiento, reconocida nacionalmente y destinada exclusivamente para los residentes del área. Anualmente la escuela celebra su BBQ de regreso a la escuela. Este año tendrá lugar el sábado 22 de agosto desde las 10 am. Es un evento abierto a todos los residentes de la Ciudad de Doral. Whether or not you may think your child understands the process, your positive demeanor and reassuring tone will send a clear message that this place is meaningful and precious. If your child is an infant, you may want to start by allowing the teacher to hold her while you stand in close proximity. During this time, it also sends a signal to your youngster that it is okay when this person other than you holds/cares for them. The first day of school is a big step and comes with many emotions for any parent, however, you know deep inside it is the ultimate best decision you could have made for your youngster. Children learn best from their peers and your childâ€™s early learning development in preschool is priceless; they will develop their social emotional, cognitive, and intellectual growth. Saying a proper good bye is crucial; never leave without saying bye, as this is key in keeping a trusting relationship between your child, you, and the school. Keep your good bye short and sweet! En matemáticas las opciones son prácticamente infinitas, pues van desde matemática de primaria, pasando por sumas, restas, multiplicaciones y divisiones, hasta fracciones, porcentajes, fracciones, raíces cuadradas, algebra, geometría, pre-cálculo, cálculo y geometría a nivel universitario. Gran parte del programa de ciencia se basa en establecer técnicas de estudio que ayuden a entender los términos y conceptos de esta materia, desarrollar estrategias de memorización que permitan recordar fácilmente términos, fechas, diagramas y fórmulas y saber cómo aplicarlas. “La dinámica con las clases de biología y química es muy parecida”, agrega Linette. La preparación para kínder es sumamemmnte importante, pues cada año los padres se preparan para enviar a su pequeño a la escuela y comienzan a preguntarse si su hijo está realmente listo para empezar la rutina escolar, “para ayudar con esta gran duda ofrecemos al niño orientaciones básicas en el pensamiento y la resolución de problemas, desarrollo social y emocional, motricidad fina, desarrollo cognitivo, habilidades lingüísticas, conciencia creativa y matemáticas”. Las clases de español y francés pretenden ofrecerle a los estudiantes dominio del vocabulario, fluidez y amplio conocimiento en estos idiomas, así como las tutorías de ESOL servirán de apoyo a los estudiantes de habla hispana que necesitan audan con el inglés. uál es la llave para que nuestros clientes permanezcan leales a nuestras marcas, a nuestros productos y nuestras compañías? La respuesta es: la esmerada atención a los detalles, ofreciendo productos y servicios de calidad, la calidez en la atención al cliente y el compromiso de cada uno de los que conforma la empresa en lograr que el cliente (interno o externo) se sienta la parte más importante para la organización. Pongamos un sencillo ejemplo: Disney, empresa reconocida a nivel mundial por sus altos estándares de calidad y por la esmerada atención a los detalles, tiene la entradas a sus parques recubiertas de adoquines rojos; de forma subconsciente le dice a sus clientes que están siendo recibidos tal como se merecen con una alfombra roja a sus pies. Para Disney, la calidad de servicio está representada por la búsqueda constante de que el cliente sienta que se le considera la joya más preciada para la organización. La filosofía de esta empresa se basa en que lo “mágico” debe quedase en la memoria de cada uno de los que visitan los parques para el resto de sus vidas, haciendo de esta forma que permanezcan leales a la marca y siempre quieran repetir la experiencia. La clave del éxito, pues, para mantener los estándares de calidad en servicio en lo más alto está relacionado directamente con el modelo de negocio definido para nuestras compañías y como cada uno lo internaliza. Es la actitud proactiva y positiva de todos los que conforman la empresa, en especial en las pequeñas y medianas, el factor fundamental y que es claramente el punto diferenciador con respecto a nuestra competencia. Atender a nuestros clientes (dentro o fuera de nuestras paredes) con esmero debe ser, más que un compromiso en la empresa, un estilo de vida para todos los que forman la compañía. Veamos otro caso, el de Apple, Steve Jobs creía que el éxito de una empresa radicaba en poder plasmar sus valores en todo lo que hace, desde el embalaje hasta el marketing pasando por la atención esmerada al cliente. Por esa razón el hombre de

Cupertino se enfocó en que “La tienda se convirtiera en la expresión física más poderosa de la marca” donde los consumidores pudieran probar los dispositivos. La tienda tiendas Apple, son como los productos que representan, lúdica, sencilla, moderna y creativa. Para que el servicio al cliente en cada una de las tiendas cumpliese y sobrepasase los estándares mundiales, Steve Jobs hizo que sus gerentes hicieran cursos en el Four Season y en el Ritz-Carlton, y les pidió que reprodujeran las mejores prácticas en una especie de cruce entre una conserjería y la barra de un bar, lo cual genero el concepto de Genius Bar. Son muchos los ejemplos que se pueden mencionar sobre mejores prácticas en lo que atención al cliente y calidad de servicio se refiere dentro de empresas de marca mundial. Pero es importante aceptar que estos conceptos no están reñidos con las pequeñas y medianas empresas, por el contrario son el nutriente fundamental de organizaciones de tamaño reducido que o bien quieren crecer o mantenerse en un mercado cada vez más competitivo. Lograr un cliente satisfecho requiere que la experiencia con la Marca, el producto que se ofrece y el servicio que se presta sean de la más alta calidad. Pero también es importante que la misma percepción que tenemos dentro de nuestras empresas con respecto al servicio que ofrecemos y a la calidad del mismo, este en sincronía con lo que los consumidores perciben. Para lograr los más altos estándares de calidad y satisfacción, la atención al cliente no solo se debe basar en cuidar a los clientes

externos, a aquellos que compran nuestros productos, sino también en mimar con el mismo celo a los clientes internos, a aquellos que forman parte de nuestra organización. Al atender al cliente interno, según las nuevas tendencias de negocio, nos aseguramos que la cadena de valor de nuestra organización funcione con los estándares más elevados en un ambiente de trabajo que potencia la colaboración, la creatividad y la excelencia en todos los ámbitos. Comunidad de Doral celebró “National Night Out”

El pasado 4 de agosto, cientos de familias se acercaron a Downtown Doral Park para participar el ‘National Night Out’ (Noche Nacional Contra el Crimen); un evento que se celebra en todo el país cada primer martes del mes de agosto con el único objetivo de crear conciencia de seguridad y prevención del delito.Los oficiales del Departamento de Policía alentaron a la comunidad para luchar contra el crimen y seguridad pública tomando parte en este tipo de programas. Conjuntamente, las autoridades municipales distribuyeron 500 mochilas y útiles escolares a los niños en edad escolar para ayudarlos a

prepararse para el regreso a clases. Además se incluyeron otras actividades de entretenimiento familiar, presentaciones especiales y comida gratis. La Noche Nacional Contra el Crimen fue introducida por la Asociación Nacional de Vigilancia del Pueblo (NATW) en 1984. La Noche Nacional está diseñada para aumentar la prevención del crimen; apoyar y participar en programas locales anti-crimen y fortalecer el espíritu de la comunidad en sociedad con la policía.

Relay For Life Wrap Up Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center, the presenting sponsor of Relay for Life Doral, in partnership with American Cancer Society held an elegant reception honoring all 2015 Relay for Life Doral participants for their dedication and hard work for the fight against cancer. Hosted at Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center’s newly-built, 9,000-squarefoot facility in Doral, the event doubled as a kickoff to next year’s Relay for Life, which was announced to take place March 12, 2016 from 4 to 10 p.m. During the event, Doral Relay for Life Fundraising Chair Jaqueline Alers presented American Cancer Society plaques to committee members recognizing their efforts for overseeing fundraising and volunteer operations for the annual fundraiser. Presenting sponsor Caribbean Radiation Oncology Center, along with Relay for Life sponsor representatives, Doral Lincoln, 1First Bank, as well as

Ceremony Entertainment Chair Brenda Archer and Volunteer Lead Patrica Duany were also recognized for their accomplishments and efforts for the fight against the disease. Having raised over $115,000, this year’s Relay for Life Doral has set the standard for the annual event and redefined the term “fundraising.” Relay for Life is a program within the American Cancer Society organization which funds groundbreaking research, vital patient services and helps communities around the world make a local impact on a global cause.

Doral Honors History with Doris and Alfred Kaskel Bust Unveiling other tournaments were held in Florida. By the early 1980s, Doral started to experience its first residential growth spurt, when Alfred’s and Doris’ grandson developed Doral Estates. Doral later became in incorporated 2003.

Doral honored history on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 with the unveiling for Doris and Alfred Kaskel Busts. The commemoration took place at the Doral Government Center lobby where the busts will be kept temporarily until being moved to the Downtown Doral Park triangle parcel once developed across the street. In the late 1950s, real estate pioneers Alfred and Doris Kaskel purchased 2,400 acres of swampland that would later be known as Doral. The “Doral” name combined Doris and Alfred’s names. The Kaskel’s intent was to build a golf course and hotel. In 1962, the Doral Country Club opened, becoming the area’s first structure and area hot spot. In the second year of operations, the Kaskels hosted the first Doral Open Invitational, Florida’s major PGA event. At the time, only three
