Art and Culture are priorities for the city

pon arriving at City Hall as Councilwoman in November 2012, Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera started to work on priorities for the improvement of the quality of life for Doral citizens. Her support to local artistic and cultural expressions has been of utmost importance in her agenda since the beginning, when she submitted for discussion Resolution 12-390, directing city staff to present an evaluation for a public/private partnership to create a Cultural Arts Center for the City of Doral. That resolution was approved, passing under unanimous consent on the Council Meeting of December 12, 2012. “I strongly believe in the union of private and public industry. This can be a multiuse center where small conventions and sports competitions can be held. It will be a place that can always be in use,” explained Rodriguez Aguilera. Beyond the creation of the cultural Arts Center, she wants to accomplish in the upcoming years several other projects intended to support cultural expressions by the residents that benefit the whole community and foster the pride and identification of people with their city. Among those projects are: The creation of a gallery corridor along the Doral Design District, including facilities of workforce housing for artists to reside within the area. • The installation of the sign with the name “Doral” in flowers, right in front of City Hall, in the Doral Downtown Park, with the sponsorship of the major companies that operate in the city. This will restore for the community a beloved icon that identified the city. • The transformation of utility boxes and bus shelters into art expressions, by allowing local artists to display their paintings on them. “We can have a contest and have local artists featured all over the city”. These were ideas she got at the recent NALEO conference. • The placement of the City Mascot, Alex the Egret, decorated by local artists, on strategic points of the city, sponsored by local businesses. That is an idea similar to the flamingos that decorate Downtown Miami or the roosters along Coral Gables and Little Havana. The fostering of artistic and cultural expressions is the foundation for a thriving society; Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera has made it part of her mission when serving in the City of Doral Council in the upcoming years.

uando llegó al Ayuntamiento en Noviembre 2012, Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera comenzó inmediatamente a trabajar en las prioridades para mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes de Doral. Apoyar las expresiones artísticas y culturales locales ha estado en el tope de su agenda desde el principio, cuando sometió a discusión la Resolución 12-390, solicitando al personal de la Alcaldía la evaluación de un convenio público/privado para la creación de un Centro de Arte y Cultura para la Ciudad de Doral. Esta resolución fue aprobada por unanimidad en la reunión del Concejo del 12 de Diciembre de 2012. “Creo firmemente en el trabajo conjunto de la industria pública y privada. Será un centro de usos múltiples, donde puedan realizarse convenciones, competencias deportivas y actos culturales. Un sitio permanentemente en uso,” explicó Rodríguez Aguilera. Adicionalmente a la creación del Centro de Arte, ella quiere completar otros proyectos orientados a apoyar las expresiones culturales de los residentes, beneficiar la comunidad entera e incentivar el orgullo e identificación de la gente con su ciudad. Algunos de estos proyectos son: • La creación de un paseo de galerías a lo largo del Distrito de Diseño de Doral, que incluya soluciones habitacionales para que los artistas puedan residir en el área. • La instalación del letrero “Doral” hecho en flores, ubicándolo en el Downtown Doral Park, frente al Ayuntamiento, patrocinado por las compañías más grandes que operan en la ciudad. Esto permitirá recuperar para la comunidad el icónico letrero que identificó el área desde sus inicios. • La transformación de los cajones de los servicios y de las paradas de bus en obras de arte, al permitir que los artistas locales desplieguen en ellas sus talentos. “Podemos tener concursos cuyo premio sea que el artista local pueda desplegar sus obras por toda la ciudad,” explica Rodríguez Aguilera. Estas ideas han sido implantadas con éxito en ciudades como Nueva Orleans y fueron compartidas en la reciente conferencia NALEO. • La colocación de la mascota de la ciudad, Alex la Grulla, decorada por artistas locales, en puntos estratégicos de la ciudad, con el patrocinio de negocios locales. Esta es una idea similar a los flamencos y gallos que decoran las calles del Centro de Miami, Coral Gables y la Pequeña Habana. Las expresiones artísticas y culturales son reflejo de las sociedades evolucionadas y progresistas. Para Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera apoyar estas manifestaciones constituye parte fundamental de su misión al servir como Concejal de la Ciudad de Doral.

he Planning and Zoning Department of the City of Doral held an informative session on Tuesday July 22nd, to have a preliminary discussion with residents and business owners about a proposed amendment that is being studied to modify the Ordinance on “Sign Regulations” (Chapter 80) regarding the use of electronic message centers and digital displays in several locations around the city. In spite of the time of the day when the workshop took place, the turnout was really satisfactory, with a crowd of around 30 people, mainly business owners, who took the time to listen to the presentation by Mr. Jan Hansen, Planning Consultant, and the City of Doral Planning and Zoning Director Mr. Julian Perez, and to provide them with the input needed to continue with the following phases of the ordinance review process. The presentation was mainly focused on introducing the public to the concepts related to Electronic Message Centers, including the current legal framework for that technology; safety concerns and considerations and an explanation of the economic benefits the incorporation of that technology may bring to the community. Details on amendments proposed to the ordinance were not discussed. Electronic Message Centers (EMCs) are programmable signs, based on LCD or LED technologies, which display words, symbols or images that can be digitally changed, without

affecting the structure of the sign. Their commercial use allows the consolidation of static signs, which may cut down on visual clutter; it also provides greater flexibility for marketing campaigns of multiple businesses and, after initial installation, has a significant reduction on management costs. On the downside though, the potential use of EMCs have generated concerns on several issues like: Public Safety due to “Driver Distractions” associated with dynamic signs; excessive brightness and limited aesthetics. All those issues can be monitored and regulated with a comprehensive and strictly enforced ordinance that contemplates a wide array of possibilities. This technology is the future of advertisement but, does the City of Doral code contemplate regulations to manage and control those sign requirements or does the code need amendments? The answer to that question, and the proposed amendments to the ordinance if needed, will be provided to the Council by the Planning and Zoning department once they have finished their review, taking into consideration the input of the public from this informative session.
Next steps on the Ordinance review process:
A request from the Council to the Planning and Zoning staff initiated the process of reviewing the ordinance regarding Sign Use. The workshop on July 22nd was part of this analysis, intended to present to community members the technology and collect questions, concerns and requests from them. Once the Planning department gathers all input from the public, amendments on the appropriate sections of the code will be drafted to create a
proposal to be presented to the Council for First Reading on a Council Meeting. The continuation of the process towards a Second Reading and final approval will depend on the direction given by the Council upon receiving comments from the Public during that First Reading. It will take at least one more month from now for the Planning and Zoning Department to complete this third phase of the review process. They estimate a first draft could be ready by the end of August to be submitted on the September Council Meeting. “We wanted to go through the process right now to share all the information about technology and regulations, to have your questions, your input before putting together some amendments,” explained Perez. Doral residents have to be aware of upcoming communications informing the time and place of the meetings where this issue will be discussed to make arrangements to participate, in order to have their opinions included on any amendment that may come up as a result of the evaluation. Doral resident Pierre Christ suggested that, before submitting any proposed amendments to the Council for First Reading, City staff would also need to “capture the feedback from the residents and conduct a meeting similar to this one, at a time more conducive for residents to be here. Here you can see mainly business owners and few residents. We are the ones to live here every day. It is very important to have the feedback of what the residents want or not to see. We are the ones who will see it 24/7 because we live here.” The request was duly noted by Mr. Perez who will share it with Management to try to arrange another workshop and conceded that “those are the comments, the type of feedback that we need in this process.” And Mr. Hansen added: “It is important to realize we are looking specifically to a technology that changes so rapidly, it has impact on the Sign ordinances. We can provide clarifications for the ordinances that regulate this. The world is changing very rapidly and like most progressive cities Doral needs to be ready to come forward to a digital world.” Doral’s growth and evolution will continue being aligned with the vision of its residents only if they get involved in all decisions that may impact their quality of life. Whether EMCs are incorporated or not to the landscape of Doral streets, will be influenced by those residents who voice their opinion by attending the meetings where ordinance amendments related to this matter will be discussed.

l Departamento de Planificación y Zonificación de la Ciudad de Doral celebró una sesión informativa el martes 22 de julio, para un debate preliminar con los residentes y dueños de negocios sobre una propuesta de enmienda que se está estudiando, con el objetivo de modificar la ordenanza sobre “Letreros y señalizaciones” (Capítulo 80) para incluir el uso de centros de mensajes electrónicos y pantallas digitales en varios lugares alrededor de la ciudad. A pesar de la hora del día en que el taller se llevó a cabo, la participación fue muy satisfactoria. Un grupo de unas 30 personas, en su mayoría propietarios de negocios, se tomaron el tiempo para escuchar la presentación realizada por el Sr. Jan Hansen, Consultor externo de Planificación, y por el Director de Planificación de Doral, Sr. Julián Pérez. La sesión de preguntas y respuestas subsiguiente proporcionó al personal de la Ciudad información valiosa, necesaria para continuar con las siguientes fases del proceso de revisión de la ordenanza. La presentación se centró principalmente en la introducción al público de los conceptos relacionados con los centros de mensajes electrónicos, incluyendo el marco legal vigente para esa tecnología; consideraciones de seguridad y una explicación de los beneficios económicos que la incorporación de esta tecnología puede aportar a la comunidad. No se discutieron detalles sobre las enmiendas propuestas a la ordenanza. Los Centros de Mensajes Electrónicos (EMCs por sus siglas en inglés) son letreros o pantallas electrónicas programables, basados en tecnologías de LCD o LED, donde los mensajes, símbolos o imágenes pueden cambiarse de forma digital, sin afectar la estructura del letrero. Su uso comercial permite la consolidación de letreros comerciales fijos de varias empresas en una sola pantalla, lo que puede reducir la contaminación visual; y también proporciona una mayor flexibilidad para las campañas de mercadeo. Adicionalmente, después de la instalación inicial, implican una reducción significativa en los costos de mantenimiento de la publicidad. Por otra parte sin embargo, el uso potencial de este tipo de pantallas genera preocupación sobre temas tales como: seguridad pública por el posible incremento de distracciones en los conductores en las vías donde se encuentren instaladas; contaminación visual por iluminación excesiva y limitaciones estéticas. Todos estos problemas potenciales pueden ser controlados al contar con una ordenanza amplia que se aplique y monitoree de manera estricta. Esta tecnología es el futuro de la publicidad, pero, ¿cuenta la Ciudad de Doral en su código con reglamentos que permitan controlar efectivamente este tipo de letreros sin afectar negativamente a la comunidad? La respuesta a esa pregunta, y las modificaciones a la ordenanza si fuese necesario, las proporcionará el Departamento de Planificación al Concejo, tomando en cuenta las observaciones del público.
Próximos pasos en la revisión de la Ordenanza:
El personal de Planificación inició el proceso de revisión de la ordenanza a petición del Concejo. El taller del 22 de julio es un componente de este análisis, con la intención de presentar a los miembros de la comunidad las características de esta tecnología y compilar preguntas, inquietudes y peticiones de los ciudadanos. Con toda la información recolectada, Planificación se encargará de redactar posibles enmiendas a las secciones apropiadas del código para crear una propuesta que se presentará al Concejo para Primera Discusión. La continuación del proceso hacia una Segunda Discusión y aprobación final dependerá de las instrucciones que gire el Concejo, basados en su análisis y los comentarios del público en Primera Discusión. Tomará por lo menos un mes más a partir de ahora para que el Departamento de Planificación y Zonificación complete el proceso preliminar de revisión. Estiman que un primer borrador de las enmiendas a la ordenanza podría estar listo a finales de Agosto, para ser presentado en la Reunión del Concejo de Septiembre. “Quisimos realizar este taller en este momento para compartir toda la información sobre la tecnología y los reglamentos con el público, responder sus preguntas y recibir sus comentarios antes de la elaboración de posibles modificaciones al código”, explicó Pérez. El Sr. Pierre Christ, residente de Doral sugirió que, antes de presentar las enmiendas propuestas al Concejo para Primera Discusión, se busque la manera de “capturar la opinión de más residentes y llevar a cabo una reunión similar a ésta, en un horario más conveniente. Aquí se puede ver hoy sobre todo a dueños de negocios y muy pocos residentes y somos nosotros quienes estamos aquí todos los días. Es muy importante conocer qué deseamos quienes permanecemos aquí y conviviremos 24/7 con cualquier cambio que impacte visualmente el entorno de la ciudad.” Este comentario fue debidamente anotado por Pérez para compartirlo con la Administración y tratar de organizar otro taller. El señor Hansen añadió: “Es importante darse cuenta de que estamos analizando específicamente una tecnología que cambia tan rápidamente, que impacta ordenanzas vigentes y es necesario adaptarse. El mundo está cambiando muy rápidamente y, como la mayoría de ciudades progresistas, Doral necesita estar listo para incorporarse a un mundo digital.” El crecimiento de Doral continuará alineado con la visión de sus residentes solamente si estos se involucran en todas las decisiones que puedan afectar su calidad de vida. La incorporación o no de EMCs al paisaje de las calles de Doral, se verá influenciado por aquellos que compartan su opinión al asistir a las reuniones donde sean debatidas las enmiendas a las ordenanzas relacionadas con este asunto. Como siempre, la clave del éxito estará en la activa participación ciudadana.

ummer vacation is in full swing, but primary election day is quickly approaching and the foundations of the vision for the City of Doral will be decided on Tuesday August 26th when the City Charter Amendments will be voted on. Only 37% of Doral 53000+ residents can vote. Therefore a single vote is worth the opinion of 2.5 residents. The opinion of an involved resident can influence the vote cast by those with the right to do it. Discuss the details of the amendments with your friends and neighbors. We cannot stress enough the importance of making an informed decision come this Election Day, because what is decided then will influence how our City will operate in the future. This prime location allows the city to not only be seen as a popular destination for businesses, particularly in the import and export sector, but it also serves as a tourist hot spot with attractions such as the Trump National Doral Golf Club. Big corporations such as Carnival Corp., parent company of Carnival Cruise Lines, and restaurateur Benihana Inc. have headquarters in the city. By Sandra Sabatella

he city of Doral is turning 11 years-old. And we can say without hesitation that this area, barely 15 square miles in the heart of Miami-Dade County, has become an amazing center for commerce, government, small businesses and industry. Far behind are the years when Doral was mainly single family homes and condos with nice and peaceful golf courses. The cows are still around but most people like them! We still remember when Univision 23 opened their local station on 41st Street, probably when it was still part of the Spanish International Network (SIN) and when Univision Network brought its main operations here to Doral. Since then, several other television stations have moved to the city, among them, CBS4; GenTV which is now an affiliate of Mundo Fox; another Univision operation by the name of UniMås (once called Telefutura) and the most recent Fusion, catering to the Hispanic population that speaks English and a joint ABC/ Univision venture. Not too many cities in the U.S. or the world can brag about having this number of television stations within their jurisdiction. Add to that the move last year of the two most important newspapers in South Florida, the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald. From the communications perspective, Doral has an incredible advantage. And that’s only on the private sector. A quick look at other assets in Doral and the picture becomes even more impressive. From the public sector perspective, Doral has the headquarters for Miami-Dade County Police Department, the headquarters for Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue and the Emergency Operations Center, one of the most advanced in the nation. If a major disaster happens in the County, whether a hurricane, a tornado, even a terrorist attack, that is where the whole government operation will be based, not in downtown Miami, but in Doral. Not impressed yet? Doral also has a branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta (there are only 12 Federal Reserve Banks districts in the whole United States). The branch in Doral is only a handful of branches that depend on Atlanta. And to top it all off, Doral has the U.S. Southern Command better known as SOUTHCOM, where the United States Armed Forces conduct an impressive list of operations, planning and security cooperation with Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Their main purpose is keeping us safe
by countering transnational organized crime, by conducting counterterrorism operations and contingency response among other objectives and creating partnerships with other nations in the hemisphere. There are only nine unified U.S. commands in the world. Doral is home to one of them. Doral may not have the airport but it has the headquarters for the Carnival Cruise lines. We would love to include Miami International Airport to our list, and although the airport is located east to the city, the Florida Department of Transportation realized the amazing link between MIA and Doral. So much so that 25th Street is being expanded so that Doral can have an exclusive viaduct or flyover connecting its industrial area south of the city directly into the airport grounds. No other city in Miami-Dade has that luxury. Once is finished other main Doral roads will be free of truck traffic. Doral also has a desirable location. Besides its proximity to the airport, the city is surrounded by three major expressways: the Palmetto to the East (826), the Dolphin to the South (836) and the Turnpike to the West. The 826-836 reconstruction project is bound to alleviate much of the traffic we face now. To say the project has been an amazing feat of engineering is an understatement. Doral will greatly benefit from it. Our local government, despite its ups and downs in the last year, has reached major landmarks in its first decade: the Doral Government Center -which opened its doors a year ago this summer-, and the new headquarters of Doral Police are impressive public facilities. DBJ goes to city hall quite often and as we know public buildings tend to deteriorate fast. But when it comes to the one in Doral, we can say the building still looks brand new. Plans are to create a downtown Doral around city hall and, considering how many old office buildings have come down around it, the prospects of an area with nice shops and restaurants where people can walk as suppose to drive looks very promising. In all, Doral incorporation eleven years ago has catapulted this city to new heights. This is no longer the quaint city with a famous golf course. This is an economic, media and government hub like no other in the county. Doral: Un centro único de la industria, medios de comunicación y más... Su ubicación privilegiada permite a la ciudad no sólo que la vean como un destino popular para las empresas, en particular en el sector de la importación y la exportación, sino que también sirve como un lugar turístico, con atracciones como el Nacional de Doral Golf Club Trump. Grandes corporaciones como Carnival Corp., empresa matriz de Carnival Cruise Lines, y Benihana Inc. tiene su sede en la ciudad.

L
a ciudad de Doral está cumpliendo 11 años. Y podemos decir sin ninguna duda que esta área, de apenas 39,37 km² en el corazón del condado de Miami-Dade, se ha convertido en un centro increíble para el comercio, gobierno, pequeñas empresas y la industria. Atrás quedaron los años en que Doral era principalmente solo viviendas unifamiliares y apartamentos con bonitos y tranquilos campos de golf. Las vacas están todavía ahí, pero a la mayoría de la gente les gusta eso! Aún recordamos cuando Univision 23 abrió su estación local en la calle 41, probablemente cuando aún era parte de Spanish International Network (SIN) y cuando Univision Network trajo sus principales operaciones a Doral. Desde entonces, otras estaciones de televisión se han trasladado a la ciudad, entre ellos, CBS4; GenTV que ahora es una filial de Mundo Fox; otra filial de Univision que lleva el nombre del UNIMAS (una vez llamado Telefutura) y la más reciente, Fusión, que atiende a la población hispana que habla Inglés y es parte del convenio entre ABC / Univision. No muchas ciudades de los Estados Unidos o en el mundo, pueden presumir de tener este número de estaciones de televisión dentro de su jurisdicción. Además, se puede añadir el traslado que se realizó el año pasado de los dos periódicos más importantes en el sur de la Florida, como lo son el Miami Herald y El Nuevo Herald. Desde la perspectiva de la comunicación, la ciudad de Doral cuenta con una ventaja increíble. Y eso es sólo en el sector privado. Si damos un rápido vistazo a otros activos en Doral, el panorama se vuelve aún más impresionante. Desde la perspectiva del sector público, Doral tiene la sede central del Departamento de Policía del Condado de Miami-Dade, la sede para el Condado de Miami-Dade Fire Rescue y el Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia, uno de los más avanzados
de la nación. Si un desastre mayor ocurre en el condado, ya sea un huracán, un tornado, incluso un ataque terrorista, es allí donde se gestiona toda la operación del gobierno; y no es precisamente en el Downtown de Miami, sino en Doral. No se ha impresionado todavía? Doral también tiene una sucursal del Banco de la Reserva Federal de Atlanta (sólo hay 12 distritos de la Reserva Federal de los bancos en todos los Estados Unidos). La sucursal en Doral es tan sólo una auxiliar que depende de Atlanta. Además, en la ciudad de Doral se encuentra el Comando Meridional de Estados Unidos o USSOUTHCOM (United States Southern Command en ingles) más conocido como el Comando Sur, donde las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos realizan una impresionante lista de operaciones, planificación y cooperación de seguridad con América Central y América del Sur, y el Caribe. Su principal objetivo nos mantiene a salvo, mediante la lucha contra la delincuencia organizada transnacional, operaciones contra el terrorismo y la respuesta de contingencia entre otros objetivos y la creación de alianzas con otras naciones en el hemisferio. Sólo hay nueve comandos unificados de Estados Unidos en el mundo. Doral es el hogar de uno de ellos. Doral puede no tener el aeropuerto pero tiene la sede de las líneas de cruceros Carnival. Nos encantaría volver a incluir el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami a nuestra lista, y aunque el aeropuerto está situado al este de la ciudad, el Departamento de Transporte de la Florida realizó el vínculo sorprendente entre MIA y Doral. Tanto es así, que la calle 25 está siendo ampliada para que Doral pueda tener un viaducto exclusivo o paso elevado que conecta la zona industrial del sur de la ciudad directamente al recinto aeroportuario. Ninguna otra ciudad en el Condado de Miami-Dade tiene ese lujo. Una vez terminada en conjunto con otras ca-
rreteras principales, Doral estará libre del tráfico de camiones. Doral también tiene una ubicación envidiable. Además de su proximidad al aeropuerto, la ciudad está rodeada por tres grandes autopistas: el Palmetto Expressway (826), el Dolphin Expressway (836) y la Turnpike. El proyecto de reconstrucción 826-836 está destinado a aliviar gran parte del tráfico que nos enfrentamos ahora. Decir que el proyecto ha sido una increíble hazaña de la ingeniería es un eufemismo. Doral se beneficiará enormemente de ella. Nuestro gobierno local, a pesar de sus altas y bajas en el último año, ha alcanzado importantes puntos de referencia en su primera década: el Centro del Gobierno de la ciudad de Doral, que abrió sus puertas hace un poco más de un año; la nueva sede de Policía de Doral son impresionantes instalaciones públicas. Doral Family Journal acude al ayuntamiento con bastante frecuencia y como sabemos, los edificios públicos tienden a deteriorarse rápidamente, pero cuando se trata de la Alcaldía de Doral, podemos decir que el edificio sigue como recién estrenado. Los planes de crear un centro o Downtown en Doral alrededor de la alcaldía, con las perspectivas de crear una zona con tiendas y restaurantes para que la gente pueda caminar y entretenerse pretende ser muy prometedor. En general, la incorporación de Doral hace once años ha catapultado a esta ciudad a nuevos niveles. Esto ya no es la ciudad pintoresca con un famoso campo de golf. Este es un centro económico, medios de comunicación y gobierno como ninguna otra en el condado. Lo cierto es que el magnate de bienes raíces Donald Trump no habría invertido en el área a menos que hubiera un buen retorno de su inversión y una infraestructura sólida que lo respalde. Doral, es una ciudad única!

ontinuing to work for Doral, continuing to demonstrate the transparency of her work and getting closer each day to the residents of the city, are goals to be met by Ana Maria Rodriguez, who in the absence of opposing candidates, was re-elected as councilor. “I am extremely happy for the fact that no one has postulated against me. It is like a unanimous vote of confidence towards me. I was prepared to do a campaign, but this is evidence that people are satisfied with my work and I have not had to go through the electoral process to be re-elected. “ Given this automatic re-election as councilor, Ana Maria feels even more committed to continue working for the city. “ Four years ago, when I made the decision to run for councilor, I knew our community was growing and that there were many needs, so now that I’ve been re-elected, I am totally involved with the progress of Doral.” Resident of this city since 2006, Ana Maria Rodriguez, who before being councilwoman was always involved with the community and social services, believes that Doral is not only the city she represents, but also the place where her children will grow. “I will continue to work with dignity, perseverance and respect to leave a positive legacy for my children and all Doral residents.” Ana Maria will be reappointed to office in November, after the completion of the elections, for which she calls on all citizens to vote, as well as those that will be made on August 26th in relation to the amendment to the Constitutional Letter of Doral, “both are democratic processes that give us the opportunity to express ourselves as residents of the city.”

Within the role played by Ana Maria in Doral’s City Council over these first four years, highlighted are her environmental proposals, which are reflected in the attention paid to the parks and green areas of the city; advanced efforts to build the Olympic sized pool, and finding solutions to traffic problems such as the opening of roads that were closed and increasing units to the Trolley transportation system. “ Among Ana Maria’s goals for the next four years are maintaining the security level of Doral, further decreasing the existing low rates of crime and working together with neighbors. eguir trabajando por el Doral, continuar demostrando la transparencia de su gestión y acercarse cada día más a los vecinos de la ciudad, son las metas a cumplir por Ana María Rodríguez, quien ante la ausencia de la postulación de candidatos en su contra, fue re-electa como concejal. “Estoy sumamente feliz, pues el hecho de que nadie se haya postulado en mi contra, es como un voto unánime de confianza hacia mí. Yo estaba preparada para hacer una campaña, pero esto es una evidencia de que la gente está satisfecha con mi trabajo y ni siquiera he tenido que presentarme al proceso electoral para ser re-electa”. Ante esta re-elección automática como concejal, Ana María se siente aún más comprometida a seguir trabajando por la ciudad. “Cuando hace cuatro años tomé la decisión de postularme como concejal, sabía que nuestra comunidad estaba creciendo y que eran muchas sus necesidades, por lo que ahora que he sido re-electa, estoy totalmente involucrada con el progreso de Doral”. Residente de esta ciudad desde el 2006, Ana María Rodríguez, quien antes de ser concejal siempre estuvo involucrada con los servicios sociales y comunitarios, considera que Doral no es sólo la ciudad que representa, sino el lugar donde van a crecer sus hijos, “voy a continuar trabajando con dignidad, constancia y respeto para dejar un legado positivo a mis hijos y a todos los residentes de Doral”. Ana María será nombrada nuevamente en su cargo en el mes de noviembre, tras la realización de las elecciones, para las cuales convocó a todos los ciudadanos para que acudan a votar, al igual que a las que se efectuarán el próximo 26 de agosto en relación a la enmienda a la Carta Constitucional de Doral, “ambos son procesos democráticos que nos dan la oportunidad de expresarnos como residentes de la ciudad”.

Dentro de la labor desempeñada por Ana María en el Concejo de Doral durante estos cuatro primeros años, destacan sus propuestas ambientales, que se ven reflejadas en la atención puesta a los parques y áreas verdes de la ciudad; las gestiones adelantadas para la construcción de la piscina olímpica y la búsqueda de soluciones para los problemas de tránsito, gracias a la apertura de vías que estaban cerradas y al incremento de unidades del sistema de transporte Trolley”. Entre las metas de Ana María para estos próximos cuatro años, destacan mantener el nivel de seguridad de Doral, disminuyendo aún más los bajos índices de delitos existentes y trabajando mancomunadamente con los vecinos; darle continuidad, junto con el condado de Miami-Dade, a las alternativas viales para disminuir el tráfico y seguir desarrollando proyectos para las mejoras ambientales y el sano esparcimiento, entre los que destacan, las mejoras al parque J.C. Bermúdez y la construcción de la piscina olímpica.

ocusing on the common goal of channeling the artistic abilities of each child, leaving within them a legacy of discipline and perseverance, Doral Conservatory and Artist Portfolio unite their talents to offer Doral families over 35 years of combined experience in the field of music, performing arts, visual arts, fitness and education. From the coming month of August 2014, these schools of art and music, considered two of the best in Doral, merge their efforts to ensure that our children have access to a highly qualified training in these areas that develop the creativity of our little ones and channel their artistic talents and inclinations. This project, led by Anamaria Basalo, Carla Magallanes, and Tailleen Arias representing the Doral Conservatory and Elizabeth Canchola, Ana Maria Soler and Sara Alfaro of Artist Portfolio, is based on stimulating the spiritual, intellectual and cognitive fortitude of those who star in our future: children. To the directors of both institutions, it is the love for children and passion for the arts that has created the perfect recipe to establish themselves as an obligatory reference to the artistic and musical education in Doral. “With this merger, we are a stronger team that ensures that your child will receive the best possible education in this field, making the great artist within to flourish,” says this dedicated group of women. “As educators, we understand that we need to nurture the mind, body, spirit, integrity and ethics. Art and music are vital to achieve this because it promotes the creativity of children and drives the process of developing self-esteem, motivation and discipline,” assure the experienced leaders of this project. orchestra. nfocados en el objetivo común de canalizar las capacidades artísticas de cada niño, dejando en ellos el legado de la disciplina y la constancia, el Conservatorio de Doral y la escuela de arte Artist Porfolio unen sus talentos para ofrecer a las familias de Doral más de 35 años de experiencia combinada en el campo de la música, las artes escénicas, las artes visuales, la aptitud y la educación. FPL investing in major upgrades to electric system serving Doral

Upgrades part of FPL’s ongoing program to strengthen record number of power lines in 2014, and including Miami-Dade County police and fire rescue facilities and other local improvements
lorida Power & Light Company (FPL) today outlined its 2014 electric system upgrades in the Doral area that will benefit local homes and businesses. The company has started work on strengthening and upgrading major power lines and equipment throughout its system to help communities recover faster following major storms while improving everyday reliability for customers.
2014 WORK IN DORAL
This year’s investment includes upgrades to four main power lines serving key facilities in the Doral area, such as Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue and the Miami-Dade Police Department facilities. The projects strengthen the electric system to better withstand major storms and allow for faster service restoration following power outages. The
work includes installing stronger utility poles designed to withstand wind gusts of 145 mph or more. Overall, FPL is upgrading 34 major power lines in Miami-Dade County in 2014 – a record number. Other improvements in Doral this year include: clearing vegetation – a common cause of power outages – from 40 miles of power lines and inspecting six major lines with advanced infrared technology. “FPL’s 2014 plan includes more projects to strengthen the electric system than ever before, including several in the Doral area. While severe weather is likely to result in power outages, a stronger electric system means less damage, faster service restoration and more reliable service in all weather conditions,” said Manny Miranda, FPL vice president of power delivery. “This year, we’re investing more than $170 million throughout our system to strengthen the power lines and equipment that serve essential community facilities such as hospitals, fire stations, water treatment plants and other facilities that are crucial to people as they recover from a storm.”

When the planned 2014 work is completed, FPL will have made the following improvements in and near Doral since the last major hurricane season in 2005: • Reinforced eight major power lines, including those serving critical local facilities such as Baptist Medical Plaza and a 911 emergency communications center. • Inspected 2,900 utility poles, restoring or replacing those that no longer met the company’s standards for strength. • Cleared 580 miles of power lines of trees and vegetation – a major cause of power outages. • Inspected 59 main power lines and equipment using the latest infrared technology, helping us address issues before they cause outages. nce the Miss Florida USA® competition concluded last July 12th, Valentina Esquivel, Miss Doral USA® 2014, had the chance of taking a break to reflect on the experience and how it can help her continue on her path to fulfill her mission in life. Beyond the beauty pageant, she has a passion for helping children in need and making an impact in society. Valentina is one of those young people that want to change the world by working hard and seizing the opportunities to improve the lives of those around them. This beautiful nineteen year old defines herself as “a Miami Girl, I was born here, I grew up here. I know more about my country than about Cuba or Venezuela, even though I have been taught the principles of those cultures from my parents. What I do with those principles is that I enhance them and I bring them into my own culture that I have been brought upon.” Valentina comes from a numerous tight-knit family with strong traditional values, where hard work and commitment to community service have been the example for generations. Her parents are successful entrepreneurs; her maternal grandfather was a respected member of the Venezuelan armed forces and her paternal grandfather is a wellknown activist within the Cuban exile in Miami. “The most influential people in my life are for sure my mom and my dad. My dad, he never says no to me, not because he wants to spoil me but because he believes in what I would do and knows I am capable of so much. And my mom, throughout my whole life she has taught me what I know. She focused on staying home and giving us the education we needed, giving us the key to our lives, to our success. That changes your life. I am super thankful for it. I would not choose anybody else but them.” Her family is very active in their church, Ekklesia Doral, where the principles of generosity and helping those in need, are encouraged among members. In church, Valentina participates in the ministry of Music, where she puts her talent as a singer to service. She graduated from John A. I finish school in December and am super happy I graduate after a year of not taking any break of school. I am looking for a job in the industry as a reporter. I am looking forward to joining a network, grow within them and make a career.”
Her concern for the welfare of children has always prompted her to be involved in activities related to that matter. She was a baby sitter since the age of twelve and recently worked at a day care, an experience she treasures deep in her heart. “I love children; everywhere I go we are magnets. Because of the pageant I had to leave my work at the daycare, but I sat them down, explained to them what I was doing, that this is the right time to fulfill my dream.” A dream that started with the little tiaras of her childhood put Valentina in the official path of events towards the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world, the Miss Universe®
Miss Doral USA®: A Beauty Pageant with values and principles
Valentina was the kind of little girl that loved to dress up as a princess and did not mind going out with her tiara on. She participated in several beauty pageants as a child and in 2002 she became Miss Mini Venezuela USA, an event sponsored by the Venezuelan-American Brotherhood. It was a natural step that she would continue to participate on events of that kind. She was crowned Miss Doral USA® in one of the preliminary competitions of the Miss Florida USA® organization, where girls are selected and assigned to represent the more important communities in the state pageant. Some municipalities hold their own event while other areas have their representatives crowned within other pageants of the organization. Given that the City of Doral is a very young city, which just recently reached the milestone of 50,000 residents, the Miss Florida USA® organization had not contemplated having a girl representing the area before. Valentina Esquivel had the talent, the experience, the beauty and had been involved enough with the Doral community to be a good representative of its youth. She became Miss Doral USA® in March 2014, to represent the city on the Miss Florida USA® pageant. Her family has been living in Miami long before the Doral area evolved into the residential and commercial area it is today, and although they do not

reside within the City of Doral borders yet (they are planning to move to Doral soon), they are well known and esteemed members of the community, due to their active involvement in their church and their social and business activities. The Miss Doral USA® organization, affiliated to the Miss Florida USA®, official path towards the Miss USA® and Miss Universe® pageants, was created recently with the objective of developing the pageant to train and select the girls that in the future will represent Doral. The values of the pageant are centered on fostering friendship and mutual respect, helping the girls grow their beauty from within, with high self-esteem and commitment to service. The Miss Doral USA® organization is a team of professionals, led by Mrs. Nancy Salazar, who will organize the event to prepare the girls become worthy representatives of the Doral area on the Florida pageant and beyond, without losing the focus of impacting positively the community by being active in service and becoming role models of good behavior, modesty and good values. Miss Doral USA® will be selected in March 2015 and all girls interested on participating should be contacting the organization through their website

Valentina’s long term project: ‘Saving Souls’
Now that the pageant is over, Valentina wants to focus the rest of her term as Miss Doral USA® on working with the community, especially to benefit children. She wants to visit hospitals and institutions to give company and love especially to those children who are in treatment and do not have someone to take care of them because their families have to go back to work. Having worked on a daycare, Valentina was really touched by the fact that many children have to spend the whole day there while their parents work to provide for them. She hopes to one day have the influence and chances to improve those situations to allow parents spend more time with their children. That is one of her dreams. The other one is more ambitious and is her long term project. She dreams of one day being able to establish a foster care home, through a foundation she will call ‘Saving Souls’, to provide not only food and shelter for children in need but also personalized care and the love of a mother, the same kind of love and protection she received from
her parents growing up and that she wishes every child in the world could have. “I want to save their souls with the concept that you are not a foster child, you are not alone. There is a Father in Heaven that loves you that is looking down on you and that will put in your way people that love you and care for you as much as your parents would have.” “I feel that becoming a public figure is going to help me a lot to achieve my dream of having a foster home. It will require preparation and resources, but I will do it because I have a passion for it. I know there will be people able to help me and I will accomplish that because at the end of the day nobody is going to say no to children in need. I want to make a difference for them.” Beyond the beauty pageant, beyond the glamour and tiaras, there is hard work and commitment, and the chance of being of influence to change the world. And that is the dream of Valentina Esquivel, being able to use her beauty, that comes from within and reflects on her smile and sparkly eyes, to improve the situation of underprivileged children; “It is not just about the looks but the way you think, what you are going to do and the difference you are going to make.”

na vez concluido el certamen Miss Florida USA® el pasado 12 de Julio, Valentina Esquivel, Miss Doral USA® 2014, pudo tomarse el tiempo de reflexionar sobre la experiencia y como puede esta ayudarla a continuar en su camino hacia cumplir su misión de vida. Más allá de la belleza, su pasión es ayudar a los niños más necesitados y tener un impacto positivo en la sociedad. Valentina es de esos jóvenes que quieren cambiar el mundo, trabajando duro y aprovechando todas las oportunidades para mejorar la vida de quienes les rodean. Esta hermosa muchacha de diecinueve años se define como una “Miami Girl. Yo nací y crecí aquí. Conozco más de mi país que de Cuba o Venezuela, aunque haya sido criada con los principios y costumbres de esas culturas, heredados de mis padres. Lo que he hecho con esos principios es ampliarlos e incorporarlos a la cultura en la que he crecido, la cultura de Miami.” Valentina viene de una familia muy unida y numerosa, con sólidos principios tradicionales, donde el trabajo duro y el compromiso comunitario han sido el ejemplo por generaciones. Sus padres son exitosos empresarios; su abuelo materno fue un respetado miembro de las Fuerzas Armadas Venezolanas, y su abuelo paterno es un conocido activista dentro del exilio cubano de Miami. “La mayor influencia en mi vida son mis padres. Papá nunca me dice que no, no porque me consienta, sino porque cree en mí, en lo que puedo hacer y sabe que puedo lograr grandes cosas. Y Mamá toda la vida me ha enseñado lo que se. Yo soy un reflejo de su esfuerzo. Ella se enfocó en quedarse en casa para educarnos y guiarnos hacia el éxito. Eso te cambia la vida. No podría estar más agradecida por tenerlos junto a mí.” Su familia es muy activa en su iglesia, Ekklesia Doral, donde los principios de generosidad y ayuda a los más necesitados son fundamentales. Valentina participa en el Ministerio de música, donde pone su talento como cantante al servicio. Se graduó de secundaria en John A. Ferguson Senior High School y estudia Periodismo en el Miami-Dade College.”Estudio Comunicaciones y me gradúo en Diciembre. Estoy muy feliz de graduarme, después de estar un año entero sin tomar un descanso en la universidad. Deseo encontrar trabajo como reportera. Me encantaría trabajar en alguna de las cadenas televisivas, trabajar duro, crecer con ellos y lograr una exitosa carrera.” Su inquietud por el bienestar de los niños siempre la ha impulsado a trabajar en actividades relacionadas con ellos. Cuidaba con devoción a su hermano desde pequeño y en cuanto tuvo doce años comenzó a trabajar de niñera. Posteriormente tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en un centro de cuidado infantil y es una experiencia que atesora en su corazón. “Amo a los niños, donde quiera que voy nos atraemos mutuamente, me encantan. Cuando entré al concurso tuve que dejar mi trabajo en el daycare. Entonces los senté a todos y les expliqué lo que iba a hacer, por qué ya no iba a estar más con ellos, y que era el momento oportuno para seguir mi sueño.” Ese sueño que comenzó con las pequeñas tiaras de su infancia, puso a Valentina en el camino oficial de los eventos que culminan en el concurso de belleza más prestigioso e influyente del mundo, el Miss Universe®.
Miss Doral USA®: Un concurso con principios y valores
Valentina fue de esas niñitas preciosas que salen de casa vestidas de princesa con su corona en la cabeza. Participó en varios concursos en su infancia
y en 2002 fue nombrada Miss Mini Venezuela USA, un evento patrocinado por la Hermandad Venezolano-Americana. Era natural que al crecer quisiera seguir participando en eventos similares. Fue coronada Miss Doral USA® en uno de los eventos preliminares de la organización Miss Florida USA®, donde las muchachas son seleccionadas y asignadas a representar las comunidades más importantes en la competencia estatal. Algunas municipalidades organizan sus propios eventos, mientras las representantes de otras son seleccionadas dentro de otros concursos de la organización. Dado que la Ciudad de Doral es de muy reciente fundación, y apenas ha llegado a los 50,000 habitantes, la organización Miss Florida USA® no había contemplado en firme tener una chica que representara al área hasta ahora. Valentina Esquivel tiene el talento, la experiencia y la belleza, además del conocimiento de la comunidad de Doral para ser una buena representante de su juventud. Así se convirtió en Miss Doral USA® en Marzo 2014, para representar a la ciudad en el Miss Florida USA®. Su familia vive en Miami desde mucho tiempo antes que Doral creciera hasta convertirse en la ciudad pujante que es hoy. Aunque ellos no residen aun en Doral, tienen planes de mudarse pronto pues su iglesia y sus relaciones comerciales y familiares se desarrollan en esta comunidad. La Organización Miss Doral USA®, afiliada al Miss Florida USA® el concurso oficial que envía participantes al Miss USA® y de allí al Miss Universe®, fue creada recientemente con el objetivo de desarrollar el concurso para entrenar y seleccionar a las futuras representantes de Doral. Los valores del concurso se centran en incentivar la amistad, el respeto mutuo y ayudar al crecimiento personal de las participantes, a desarrollar su belleza interior, su autoestima y su compromiso con el servicio comunitario. La organización cuenta con un equipo de profesionales, liderados por la Sra. Nancy Salazar, quienes prepararán a las muchachas en etiqueta, protocolo, pasarela, nutrición y estética para que sean dignas representantes de Doral en el evento estatal y más allá, sin perder el foco de impactar positivamente a la

‘Saving Souls’ el proyecto a largo plazo
Valentina quiere enfocar el resto de su reinado como Miss Doral USA® en trabajar con la comunidad, en especial en beneficio de los niños. Quiere visitar hospitales e instituciones para dar amor y compañía sobre todo a los niños que están en tratamiento y no tienen quien los cuide y acompañe porque sus familiares tienen que ir a trabajar. Su trabajo en el daycare la sensibilizó al hecho que muchos niños pasan el día entero en esos locales para que sus padres puedan trabajar y mantenerlos. Es su mayor deseo poder cambiar esa situación, tener la influencia suficiente algún día para mejorar las circunstancias y lograr que los padres puedan pasar más tiempo con sus niños. Ese es uno de los sueños de Valentina. El otro es un poco más ambicioso, es su proyecto a largo plazo. Ella quiere establecer una casa de cuidado para niños sin hogar, a través de una fundación que quiere llamar “Saving Souls” (Salvando almas), para proveer
Education | Educación no solamente comida y casa a niños desamparados, sino también el cuidado y amor personalizado de una madre, el mismo amor y protección que ella recibió de sus padres al crecer y que ella desearía que todos los niños del mundo pudieran tener. “Quiero salvar también sus almas, con el concepto de que no están desamparados, que existe su Padre del Cielo que les ama y protege, y que pondrá en su camino personas que les cuidarán tanto como lo habrían hecho sus padres.” “Pienso que al ser una figura pública puedo tener influencia para lograr este sueño. Va a requerir preparación y recursos, pero voy a lograrlo porque tengo pasión por eso. Sé que habrá personas dispuestas a ayudarme, porque nadie dice que no a un niño necesitado. Quiero hacer una diferencia por todos ellos.” Más allá del concurso de belleza, del glamour y de las coronas, hay trabajo y compromiso y la oportunidad de tener influencia para cambiar el mundo. Ese es el sueño de Valentina Esquivel, ser capaz, con su belleza que viene de adentro y se refleja en su limpia mirada y sincera sonrisa, de mejorar la situación de los niños más necesitados. “Lo importante no es como luces sino lo que piensas y lo que haces para lograr una diferencia positiva en el mundo.”

Tips on preventing stings and bites

s South Florida residents do their best to enjoy the outdoors, countless summer days are ruined by stinging bugs that can drive even the strongest indoors. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue wants residents to be informed on how to keep these pesky and sometimes dangerous bugs away from our families and yards. While it is nearly impossible to completely eliminate the problem from your home permanently, there are steps you can take to reduce your exposure to mosquito bites. MDFR and the Florida Department of Health advise the public on the importance of practicing the “5 D’s” of prevention: • Avoid going outdoors at DUSK and DAWN when mosquitoes are most active. • DRESS so your skin is covered with clothing. • Apply mosquito repellent containing DEET to bare skin and clothing. Other effective repellents include picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535. • Eliminate mosquito breeding areas around your home. Empty containers and DRAIN standing water around your home where mosquitoes can lay eggs. Additionally, it’s important to keep in mind that when choosing a repellant: • Always read label instructions on repellent to ensure the appropriate usage before applying. Label instructions will also warn if a repellant is appropriate for children. According to the Center for Disease Control, mosquito repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under the age of 3. DEET is not recommended on children younger than 2 months old. • Infants should be protected by either keeping them indoors or using mosquito netting over carriers. • Recommended products contain concentrations of up to 30 percent of DEET. Traditional repellents and EPA-approved alternatives are usually available at local pharmacies. • Insect repellant should be applied on exposed skin or onto clothing, but not underneath clothing. If you are bitten or stung, most bites from bees, wasps and ants are not usually life-threatening unless you have an allergic reaction. Normal reactions to bites include pain, itching, redness and swelling confined to the sting site. If you have any other reaction from a bite or a sting such as hives, swelling or a drop in blood pressure, call 9-1-1 immediately. ientras los residentes del Sur de la Florida disfrutan del aire libre, un sinnúmero de días de verano están arruinados por las picaduras de los insectos Miami-Dade Fire Rescue quiere que los residentes estén informados sobre cómo mantener lejos de nuestras familias y nuestros patios, a estos molestos y a veces peligrosos insectos. Aunque es imposible eliminar por completo el problema de su hogar, hay pasos que usted puede tomar para reducir la exposición a las picaduras de los mosquitos. MDFR y el Departamento de Salud de Florida aconsejan a la población sobre la importancia de practicar estos tips: • Evite salir, en la medida de lo posible, entre el anochecer y el amanecer, ya que es el momento en el que los mosquitos están más activos. • Use ropa que cubra la piel: manga larga, pantalones largos y calcetines, así como evitar los colores oscuros y brillantes, que atraen a los mosquitos. • Aplique repelente de mosquitos que cuente entre sus principios activos con la dietiltoluamida (DEET). Aplique directamente sobre la piel expuesta y la ropa. Otros repelentes eficaces incluyen picaridin, aceite de eucalipto de limón y IR3535. • Cabe destacar, que la eficacia de los repelentes varía de 15 minutos a 12 horas en función del tipo, las condiciones locales (por ejemplo, humedad), la susceptibilidad del individuo, la sudoración o la sensibilidad de los insectos a los mismos. • Elimine las áreas de cría de mosquitos alrededor de su casa. Vacíe los recipientes con agua estancada alrededor de su casa, donde los mosquitos pueden poner sus huevos. Además, es importante tener en cuenta a la hora de elegir un repelente: • Lea siempre las instrucciones de la etiqueta sobre el repelente para asegurar su apropiado uso antes de aplicar. Las instrucciones de la etiqueta también advierten si un repelente es apropiado para los niños. Según el Centro de Control de Enfermedades, los repelentes de mosquitos que contienen aceite de limón y eucalipto no se deben usar en niños menores de 3 años. DEET no se recomienda en niños menores de 2 meses de edad. • Los niños deben estar protegidos ya sea mantenerlos en el interior de la casa o por el uso de mosquiteros en los cochecitos. • Productos recomendados contienen concentraciones de DEET hasta el 30 por ciento. DEET en concentraciones altas (más de 30%) puede causar efectos secundarios, particularmente en niños; evite productos que contengan más de 30% DEET. DEET. Existen otros repelentes tradicionales y otras alternativas aprobadas por la EPA que están generalmente disponibles en las farmacias locales. • El repelente de insectos se debe aplicar en la piel expuesta o sobre la ropa, pero no debajo de la ropa. La mayoría de las picaduras de abejas, avispas y hormigas no suelen ser peligrosas para las personas a menos que tengan una reacción alérgica. Las reacciones normales a las picaduras incluyen dolor, picor, enrojecimiento e hinchazón confinado en el sitio de la picadura. Si usted tiene cualquier otra reacción a una picadura como urticaria, hinchazón o un bajón en la presión arterial, llame inmediatamente al 9-1-1. ight around our Independence Day celebrations, I stopped at a light in one of our streets and see a young man with a sign that made me ache inside. One of those brave men and women that help defend our freedom held a sign that said “Veteran waiting for disability benefits” as he extended out his hand for charity. My mind raced in many different directions. Why are our veterans in need to be on the streets? What still needs to be done? Is the community as whole becoming more aware or numb to their needs? How can we streamline the processes and connect veterans and their dependents to federal, state and community resources? Many of us are working hard to ease the struggles of our veterans as they return home and to care for their families while they serve but there is so much more to be done. As a community we must open our eyes, open our hearts and extend a helping hand to our military service men and women in need, as well as their families. They put their lives on the line for us; let us show our gratitude with action. As Chairman of the Military Affairs Board (MAB) of Miami Dade County I have seen a group of dedicated members, commit their time and resources to help our veterans. The purpose of the MAB is to promote, attract and solicit military activities in Miami-Dade County, as well

as advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance. Great work has been done yet much more work needs to be done. We are looking for way to connect with more agencies that are helping veterans and does that are willing to develop programs. Homelessness; mental, physical and emotional disability; difficulty with reintegration to society and unemployment are just some of the grave issues facing our veterans. We must continue to push forward and find ways to honor their service to our great nation. I commend the following organizations for what they are doing. ola a todos nuevamente, espero que sigan disfrutando de estos días de verano a pesar de las lluvias. Me alegra traerles un artículo más, que nos ayudara a prevenir y a tratar condiciones de salud que nos asechan en estos tiempos. En este artículo les hablaré de un tema que mucha gente sabe de que se trata, pero al parecer no le han puesto mucho cuidado, ya que cada día más, se incrementa la población con estas condiciones. Hablo del colesterol alto, la diabetes y los triglicéridos más alto de lo normal, y es que estas tres están ligadas. Una tiene que ver con la otra. Primero que nada les voy a dar una breve explicación del porque hay una conexión entre estas tres condiciones muy comunes y les contestare: Porque es que están conectadas, y porque hay que cuidarnos de ellas. Lo que si les puedo decir desde ahora, es que los tres se basan en estos principio: MALOS HABITOS ALIMENTICIOS, FALTA DE CONOCIMIENTO NUTRICIONAL, EXCESOS, INDISCIPLINA-(FALTA DE ORGANIZACIÓN).

Empecemos con una breve introducción de cada uno para plantear la solución y unos tips para que terminen satisfechos. Listos? El Colesterol: Como ya saben la grasa es crucial para vivir. Necesitamos de ellas para que el cuerpo cumpla todas sus funciones. El colesterol se encuentra en nuestro cuerpo formando parte de membranas celulares, lipoproteínas, ácidos biliares y hormonas. Su origen tiene dos fuentes, la externa que proviene de tu alimentación y la interna que produce el propio organismo. Existen dos clases, Colesterol bueno (HDL) el Colesterol malo (LDL) compuesto de grasas de baja densidad. Triglicéridos: Mientras más triglicéridos, menos Colesterol bueno (HDL). Los triglicéridos son un tipo grasa que circula por el torrente sanguíneo y está presente en el tejido adiposo. Pueden ser producidos por el organismo o injeridos por los alimentos que comemos. El cuerpo los utiliza para almacenar energía y como combustible para los músculos. Diabetes: La diabetes es una enfermedad crónica que aparece debido a que el páncreas no fabrica la cantidad de insulina que el cuerpo humano necesita, o bien la fábrica de una calidad inferior. La insulina, una hormona producida por el páncreas,
es la principal sustancia responsable del mantenimiento de los valores adecuados de azúcar en la sangre. Hay que entender que cada condición son las consecuencias de una acción (en este caso, no muy buena). COLESTEROL ELEVADO = A TRIGLICERIDOS ELEVADOS = AZUCAR ALTA. Porque es esto? Simple, al tener altos niveles de grasa (adipocitos glucotoxicos), estos bloquean el receptor de la insulina, no permite que pueda generar su acción; Cuál es esta acción? Nivelar el azúcar en la sangre. Al no poder cumplir su labor el azúcar termina convirtiéndose en grasa, aumentando el Colesterol y disminuyendo el colesterol bueno, ahí es cuando incrementan los triglicéridos. Al no poder generar suficiente insulina debido al alto colesterol en la sangre, el hígado se ve forzado a generar más “triglicéridos” para prevenir que el azúcar intoxique la sangre. Un aumento de los triglicéridos fuera de lo normal, bloquean el flujo sanguíneo y endurecen las paredes de las arterias. Resultando en aumento de peso, mala circulación, colesterol alto, diabetes tipo 2, al tiempo insuficiencia renal, aterosclerosis, síndrome metabólico, riesgo de enfermedades coronarias, entre otras enfermedades no deseadas por nadie. TOMANDO ACCION: Entonces ya entendimos que muchos carbohidratos altos en azúcar y grasas saturadas injeridas, sobrecarga al páncreas lo que hace que produzca mucha insulina. Muchos carbohidratos altos en azúcar se convierten en glucosa. Glucosa + mucha insulina se convierte en GRASA. When you begin drafting up your business plan, it is important to think ahead about your personal financial goals, budget, risk tolerance and funds look like. Building a business from scratch isn’t an easy task; it requires a lot of blood, sweat and tears as well as a healthy amount of perseverance. All businesses require certain permits and licenses to operate, but depending on what it is your business does will determine exactly the sort of permits you specifically are required to obtain before you get up and running. i estás cambiando de carrera —por elección propia o necesidad— puedes tomar medidas para ayudar a asegurarte una transición sin problemas. AARP pone a tu disposición una variedad de recursos en www.aarp.org/WorkResources. La ayuda incluye consejos sobre cómo establecer contactos, enterarte de plazas de trabajo, hacer investigación sobre las empresas y solicitar empleo. He aquí 10 consejos que te ayudarán a realizar una transición sencilla hacia tu nueva carrera. 1. Haz un inventario de tus destrezas. Traza cuatro columnas en un papel. En la primera columna, haz una lista de todas tus destrezas, incluso aquellas que aprendiste en el trabajo o que adquiriste haciendo de voluntario o en la escuela y destrezas que son sencillamente parte de ti. This past July 23rd, Doral Chamber of Commerce organized the anual event “VII Power Business Expo 2014: “Business Opportunities Expo, Conference & Military Resource Fair” which was the largest B-to-B Expo, Conference and Networking event for business owners & executives. The one day event provided small & mid-sized businesses with unparalleled opportunities to grow their business. A new twist on this year’s expo was the “Business Opportunity Expo”, which lets attendees explore opportunities to start a new business, and the “Veterans Resource Fair”, served to help our heroes receive assistance in finding jobs or starting their own business. Carlos López-Cantera, the Lieutenant Governor of Florida in conjunction with the City of Miami Mayor, Tomas Regalado were the special guests of the conference. At the same, also attended as speakers, Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz; Doral Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz and Annette Taddeo, now running mate for the November elections from governor candidate Charlie Crist. During the event, the Doral Council, and the mayor Luigi Boria, delivered a proclamation to Manny Sarmiento and directors of Doral Chamber of Commerce.

Pet Adoption Event in The Doral Atlantic

On Friday July 11th 2014 The Atlantic Doral, a pet friendly residential community, hosted a Pet Adoption Event in collaboration with Doral’s Vice Mayor Christi Fraga, Miami-Dade County’s Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz and Miami –Dade County’s Animal Services’ Hope Express. Residents of Doral gathered around the Hope Express to see the various dogs and cats for adoption, excitement filled the apartment community located on 107th avenue and 74th street. Miami Dade Animal Services brought dogs of all sizes from puppies to large breeds in hopes of finding them a home. All animals were vaccinated and spayed and/or natured before it can be adopted. City officials came out and supported the event aiding in trying to find homes for the animals. Volunteers took the time to take each dog out so prospective adopters would find their perfect match. Families enjoyed their time looking at the animals as well as stopping by the various local vendors who participated. With the communities support, 6 animals were adopted at the event. The Atlantic Doral looks forward to hosting another pet adoption event in the near future.
