The Headache of Doral Governance

t seems as if there are some “technicalities” that still need to be ironed out at Doral. I’m referring to the length of their Council Meetings. I still remember the crowded space at the old building, where sometimes people had to stand along the corridor because there were not enough chairs. Even with such crowds, the temperature in the room was frigid. Maybe the people in charge of the A/C probably thought the discussions were literally sucking out the oxygen from the room. Maybe the meetings were shorter because the then Mayor didn’t allow people to go over the allotted time on the clock, or because it was too cold. After a year and a half at the new chambers, they still cannot make up their minds about the meetings. A second meeting was added in 2012 to handle just the zoning issues. Presumably, that move would allow two short meetings, twice a month, as opposed to a long and tedious meeting, once a month, from 6pm to potentially midnight. In 2013, since the regular meeting that started at 6pm was lasting over 7-hours average, they decided to divide the Regular Council Meeting in two halves. One in the morning with mainly housekeeping issues that do not need input from the public. (After all, most of the residents and business owners work during the day). And then later in the evening, a second meeting dealing with agenda items that might be more controversial and/or require public input. The first time they tried the new “system” the

morning meetings went for so long, council members hardly had time to get something to eat before the evening meeting started, making the 2014 first Regular Council Meeting a 14hour Olympic marathon. Talking about the law of unintended consequences! Two reasons led to this insanity: lawyers and police cars. I have a suggestion for whoever takes care of the A/C… crank it up!

Though the move by Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz not to renew the city attorney’s contract caught everyone by surprise, it is true that technically it does belong to housekeeping issues. What is obvious is that for some mysterious reason Ruiz decided not to include it in the agenda. As we all know, pocket items are usually tricky. A week after the Council decided in a 3-2 vote not to renew attorney John Herin’s contract, another controversial episode occurred between Councilwoman Ruiz and Jesse Jones, president of the committee reviewing the city charter. The confrontation resulted over her decision to propose not renewing Mr. Herin’s contract. It seems lack of civility is the new normal in Doral. The 14-hour marathon also dealt with new police cars and their new design, whereby Chief Richard Bloom would like to save the city about $275,000 dollars. But nobody seemed too happy with changing the branding. Imagine, the first time Doral politicians finally agreed on the cars’ colors and design for their first Police Department it took them months! All that effort down the drain! They need to learn one or two things from Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board. This huge public entity has one meeting a month that starts at 11am, breaks for lunch, and hardly ever

goes beyond 9pm. Their budget is $5.2 billion and has over 50,000 employees. So what does Doral decide to do to deal with the police cars and the long Council Meetings? Have another Special meeting. That’s right. Remember, each of these special meetings costs us, the taxpayers, thousands of dollars. The lessons from 2013 have been forgotten already. And the resolutions for 2014 parallel those who want to drop weight or quit smoking. No wonder people are frustrated with government. The special meeting on January 29th finally addressed the police cars after another grueling hour regarding rules and procedures, including those concerning the invocations prior to regular and zoning council meetings. A string of members of the general public came up to the podium and shared their concerns. They were under the impression that Doral would get rid of the invocations all together. After passionate requests to continue asking God to guide the city before the Council deliberates and make decisions, council members clarified that was not their original intention. How the public got this wrong? That’s another mystery that probably will never be solved. Surprisingly, the going back and forth on the different police car paint-striping options took less than half four. Four simple choices were eventually mixed and matched until the Council finally hatched up a final version. The Mayor looked like the husband who goes to the shopping mall with the wife and starts panicking. How long would she take to shop? Thankfully, the city decided to save money, our money. Don’t be surprised if you see different looks in our police cars. It’s normal, and it does happen in many other municipalities because budget limitations don’t allow all police cars be replaced at the same time. Let’s face it. At the end of the day, it’s not about cars, nor about rules and regulations. It is about leadership. I would not be surprised if the meetings continue to run into the wee hours of the morning. Let’s just hope that now that the Council decided not to name public venues after living people, we won’t start seeing dead people along city hall corridors after midnight, begging the Council to name new parks after them. Trust me, if I see dead people, I will start any invocation, no matter what denomination may be, regardless of what any government says. Let us pray!!!

Doral Approves New Design for City of Doral Police Cars

n January 29, 2014, the City of Doral Council held a special workshop before their Zoning Meeting to discuss the new design of the City’s Police cars. During a non-eventful zoning meeting, a new agenda and the topic of the invocation were discussed. Following are the highlights:

Council approves new police car colors.

A special workshop was held at the Government Center to look over and approve a new design for the City of Doral Police Cars. After much discussion and looking at the various designs presented by Chief Blom and Alfredo Vega at a savings of approximately $2,500 to the City. Chief Blom stated that his main concern was the savings that the new design would have. The police department just purchased 19 new vehicles to replace some of the older vehicles currently in its fleet. To strip the cars with the current design would cost roughly $3,000. However, the new white scheme would only cost $500. It would be a savings of approximately $275,000 to the city. Both the Chief and Vega brought several options for the council to choose. After a long discussion and careful consideration, The council unanimously approved a design with the word “police” in blue letters and the city’s seal displayed prominently on the sides. The old design will be faced out as cars are replaced and eventually the 110 police car fleet will be all with the new design.

On the agenda for this particular meeting was the approval of the new split session meetings that will be the new format going forward. Mayor Luigi Boria was seen handing out slips for people to complete in order to speak during public comments. He packed the audience with church supporters to speak in favor of “keeping” the invocation as part of the agenda. The issue is that taking the invocation out of the agenda. The council was shocked that people were actually believing that the invocation was going to be taken out of the meetings. That was never the case. The issue was having a preacher preaching during the invocation. Invocations need to be “religion neutral and the city does not favor one religion over another”, City Attorney, John Herin said. If you allow one religion to address the council and members during a council meeting, you must allow all religions to do the same. Invocations are not prayers. The council approved the ordinance formalizing the procedure for morning and evening meetings in two sessions. The order of business would be discussed during the morning meetings. The evening session would be for presentations, public hearings, public comments, and more controversial items up for discussion. The City Attorney was asked by council to bring forth a resolution addressing invocation next meeting. The next council meeting will be held at the City of Doral Government Center on February 29, 2014; Morning Session at 9:00 AM; afternoon session at 6:00 PM.

l pasado 29 de enero de 2014, el Concejo de la Ciudad de Doral realizó una reunión especial antes de su Junta de Zonificación para discutir el nuevo diseño de los carros de la policía de la ciudad. Además también se discutió una nueva agenda y el tema de la invocación. A continuación se presentan los aspectos más destacados: Durante la reunion especial , el Concejo de la Ciudad revisó y aprobó un nuevo diseño para los carros de la policia de Doral. Después de mucha discusión y observando los diversos diseños presentados por el jefe de la policía de Doral, Richard Blomy Alfredo Vega. Richard Blom dijo que su principal preocupación era el ahorro que el nuevo diseño tendría. El departamento de policía acaba de adquirir 19 vehículos nuevos para reemplazar algunos de los vehículos más antiguos que actualmente tiene su flota. Para retirar el diseño actual a los carros costaría aproximadamente $ 3,000. Sin embargo, el nuevo esquema blanco sólo costaría $ 500. Sería un ahorro de aproximadamente $ 275.000 a la ciudad. Tanto el Jefe de la Policía como Vega trajeron varias opciones para que el Concejo pudiera elegir . Después de un largo debate y una cuidadosa consideración, el Consejo aprobó un diseño simple que tendrá la palabra “POLICE” en letras azules al lado del sello de la ciudad sobre una franja azul. El viejo diseño desaparecerá según sean sustituidos los carros y, finalmente, los 110 vehículos de la policía tendrán su nuevo diseño. En la agenda de esta particular reunión fue aprobada una ordenanza para formalizar los asuntos a tratar en secciones divididas durante nuevas reuniones, que será el nuevo formato para el futuro. El alcalde Luigi Boria repartió unos formularios a personas que atendieron la reunión para que hablaran durante los comentarios publicos referente a la invocación durante las reuniones. El problema es que nunca el concejo dijo que iba a quitar la invocación de la agenda. Pero si recalcaron que era importante definir la diferencia entre la invocación y el sermon de un pastor. El abogado, John Herin, explicó que las invocaciones deben de ser neutrales y no favorecer a una religión sobre otra. Si permiten a una religión que haga la invocación entonces deben dejar a todas las religiones hacer la invocación. El Concejo aprobó el procedimiento de dos sessions para las reuniones, una por la manana a las 9:00am, y otra por la tarde a las 6:00 pm. En las mañanas se discutirán los negocios de la ciudad, y por las tardes se harán las presentaciones y comentarios públicos. El Concejo le pidio al abogado de la ciudad que prepare una resolución referente al procedimiento de la invocación para la próxima reunión. La próxima reunión del Consejo se celebrará el 29 de febrero de 2014; La Sesión de la mañana comenzará a las 9:00 am, y la sesión de la tarde a las 6:00 pm .

50 Years Celebrating the Blessing of Love By Grecia Romero

ebruary is known as the most romantic month of the year because of Valentine’s Day. It’s one day when many couples stop their daily routines to express their love in a special way. However, the question is how to celebrate Valentine’s Day every day? Or better said, who would not like to know the “secret” of happiness that nurtures love beyond just a commemorative date

once a year? Who does not want to know how to have a long and happy marriage? There are not better people to answer these questions than Nancy and Freddy Reyes, and Lesbia and Cristóbal Luzardo: both couples who just celebrated the privilege of reaching their golden anniversary. They now share their experiences in this special issue.

weetness, devotion and faith are words that perfectly describe the marriage of Nancy and Freddy Reyes, who have formed a family of two children and five grandchildren. With a warm smile they talk about how they met “being still children and friendly neighbors” and how after dating for four years, they joined their lives in a simple religious ceremony in December 1963. When their nuptials took place, both Nancy and Freddy had a clear understanding of the commitment they were getting into and all efforts that come with starting a family: “Although we were very young when we got married, our way of thinking was very serious. We knew we had to get ready for our future home and therefore be independent to support ourselves so we saved a lot at that time,” Freddy remembers. Their first months as husband and wife were a mixture of arrangements, adaptations and emotions that included learning how to manage a home and their economic resources independently, continue preparing academically and getting ready to receive their first anniversary gift in a form of a child, who was born exactly the same date they got married twelve months earlier. The family soon grew welcoming a second child. As this suggests, they had to make adjustments to meet their new responsibilities. Nancy looked after their children and Freddy worked double shifts in order to provide for his family. Despite the economic situation, they maintained a positive attitude: “For a long time, we had just enough to cover our needs. We had no luxuries but we were happy for what we had,” says Nancy. The same way today, many families are also affected by financial constraints but the example of this couple illustrates how to turn difficult moments into opportunities: “We enjoyed the time together with our children to the fullest. Even though we participated in inexpensive

activities, we looked for ways to make them unite us as a family and build sweet memories.” They have learned the value of keeping their love alive through surprising each other with “small daily gestures”, and expressing their affection by showing “admiration for one another.” They have also learned how to make their love grow by recognizing their virtues and using them as Freddy explains: “At home leadership is shared. Whoever is the most capable to handle a situation, that is the one who takes the lead. We trust each other.” However, they recognize and accept their limitations and they show tolerance and respect by avoiding making any negative comments behind their spouse’s back. In the same sense, dialogue is essential for the Reyes couple. The ability to openly and honestly communicate their ideas without hurting or upsetting each other: “In our lives we avoid letting our talks end up in fights. If we need to talk about something, we do it with respect.” Although they

should discuss serious issues, they don’t let little things get bigger since they believe that “trouble start to show if a couple gets used to fighting over nonsense like the preference on the color of a shirt.” They advise against going to bed mad, but instead seek conciliation by recognizing faults and asking for forgiveness. On their point of view, tolerance is learned by “listening and understanding the other person’s feelings with tenderness.” Faith has been another important factor in Nancy and Freddy’s lives: “Our families were very religious and taught us the importance of loving God and others. Once we arrived home from our wedding, we hung a crucifix at the head of our bed and an image of the Virgin of Coromoto in our living room which have been with us since then.” Their faith and constant prayer together have led them to leave their “actions and decisions in the hands of God”, feeling blessed by the strength and peace received in tough times, and thankful for the joyful moments. Their faith has also motivated them to support other couples looking for advice to overcome their problems. Even now, they participate in groups that provide guidance to couples while also being very active in different activities within the Church. During all these years, they have been very supportive to each other in order to make their vision of a family a reality and enjoy along with their children many achievements, as Nancy says: “We feel very proud of every success in our children’s lives. Our hearts are filled with joy for so many blessings such as the one Freddy had being one of the professors teaching our two children in college, and furthermore being the one giving the medals to them at their graduation ceremony.” According to what the Reyes think, many problems in couples nowadays begin by not giving the right

www.doralfamiyjournal.com level attention to their marriage, failing to devote time to each other, and losing their love which is the most important foundation. Their concept of

full love is taken from the Bible which states that love is “patient and kind, it does not envy, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered. It always

protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.” They are a testimony that a successful marriage “is indeed possible.”

esbia and Cristóbal Luzardo are a great example of love, family values and adaptability. Their cheerful way of talking and the way they see each other are enough to notice the dynamism that exists in their home. When asked how they met, both smile as they recall the day Lesbia began working in the newly-opened business that Cristóbal had

with close relatives. They never imagined that two and a half years later, in September 1963, they would begin the most satisfactory business of their lives... their own family of four children and nine grandchildren. Being young when they decided to get married was not synonymous with immaturity. By contrast, the example they had received from their parents, who also had long-lasting marriages, had shown them exactly what to expect of a married life. They remember taking the time to get to know each other well, and plan their future and goals together: “We knew we wanted a stable marriage and a family. We had decided to get married when we built our own home and because we lived in a small town with few facilities, we could do it,” Cristóbal recalls. Starting with long talks they shared during while dating, Lesbia and Cristóbal learned the importance of dialogue and communication. They put emphasis in creating the right foundation of a successful marriage by being more united to each other. “At that time there weren’t as many distractions as there are now. Not much time was spent on television and there were no modern devices to limit family

time. We used to talk a lot about our things, set our goals, and make our plans together, laughing and sharing stories of the day. That has always helped us,” said Lesbia. Another secret that the Luzardos learned is that marriage should be open to adaptations to new circumstances, although it implies sacrifices or difficulties: “When our company grew to become the largest and most lucrative in the area, that prosperity brought us much concern which required longworking hours and sleepless nights. There came a point when we chose not to have that money, but instead wanted to enjoy quiet family life.” That implied waivers of certain privileges, but also brought its benefits: “We moved to a farm, we limited our income to the farming activity and our children began to arrive. We now clearly see that it was a good decision because we lived a calmer life that gave our children beautiful memories of their childhood in that place.” As a monotonous life is not the Luzardo couple’s style, changes have always been part of their lives. Moving from cities or countries in search of better living conditions, education for their children, and closeness with grandchildren, new businesses or different vacation have been a reason to escape from the routine and put aside any fear. Their motivation? Making the other person happy without any reservation. Lesbia and Cristóbal consider important to seriously think about their family welfare. They state that this helps couples stay together despite beliefs or behaviors from society. In Cristóbal’s words: “Sad to say, but many families are separated because they have no clear concept of what a family is all about, or the impact on children of parental separation, lack of love or a place to call home. I’ve always believed that in order to teach our children the importance of marriage, we must have the morals that gives a good example, teaching fidelity by being loyal to the spouse and caring for each other.” Lesbia added: “Many couples are getting into marriage thinking: ‘If this doesn’t work, we can just get separated’ but

that does not help.” An interesting aspect the Luzardos highlight, is that marriage demands willing changes over time. Lesbia explains: “The love and the interest to be together moves us to be more mature as the relationship also matures. We should understand that we cannot always be the same people. We are part of a family and showing resistance to necessary adaptations is not good. Growing in marriage involves learning to compromise and be calm.” Cristóbal also says: “Sometimes men don’t get involved to change even a diaper, because we think we’re too busy working, but eventually we realize that we must do more. I’m glad that many young husbands are worried about their wives and they’re engaged in caring for their children.” With his characteristic joy he adds: “Now I am more aware that I must remain active. Every day I look for ways to help at home wondering: How can I make her happier?” Faith has also been present in the life of Lesbia and Cristóbal Luzardo. Their love for God has led them to demonstrate patience and tolerance and avoid being selfish. It has helped them to look for the positive side of every situation and contemplate the future with hope. So they advise young people to choose their future spouses taking time to look beyond appearances, to discover the values of the other person, and share the same faith. The life experience of the Luzardos is evidence that love and mutual support makes it possible to have a happy and harmonious marriage. They have made their marriage their bedrock of strength and support in which they build their lives around. They have made a serious commitment to protect it, care for it and give it space to grow and flourish. Now that all their children have already formed their own families, Lesbia and Cristóbal happily enjoy the outcome of their effort. Not many people have the privilege of living experiences like the Reyes and Luzardo families. They truly are a source of inspiration to couples who are struggling to stay together in today’s society. It is true that times have changed and the challenges of our era are different, but these couples have shown that despite all the life’s ups and downs, it is possible to have a happy and lasting marriage, which promotes healthy families and helps develop a more stable society. After all, as both of them conclude “all is worth it” because “the reward is wonderful”.

50 Años Celebrando la Bendición del Amor Por Grecia Romero

propósito de la celebración del “Día de los Enamorados”, Febrero es conocido como el mes más romántico del año. Una fecha en que muchas parejas hacen un alto a sus rutinas para expresar su amor de forma especial. La pregunta es: ¿Cómo lograr que el día de los enamorados sea todos los días? O dicho de otra manera, ¿A quién no le gustaría saber

“el secreto” de la felicidad que nutre el amor más allá de una fecha conmemorativa?, ¿Quién no desea un matrimonio duradero y feliz? Nadie mejor para contestar estas interrogantes que Nancy y Freddy Reyes y Lesbia y Cristóbal Luzardo, quienes acaban de celebrar el privilegio de llegar a sus Bodas de Oro y ahora comparten sus experiencias en esta edición especial.

ulzura, entrega y fe son palabras que describen muy bien el matrimonio de Nancy y Freddy Reyes, han formado una familia de dos hijos y cinco nietos. Con una cálida sonrisa cuentan que “se conocían desde niños siendo vecinos” y que luego de un noviazgo de cuatro años, unieron sus vidas en una sencilla ceremonia en diciembre del año 1963. Al contraer sus nupcias, tanto Nancy como Freddy tenían muy claro el compromiso que adquirían y los esfuerzos que les suponía comenzar una familia: “A pesar que éramos muy jóvenes cuando nos casamos, nuestra manera de pensar era muy formal. Queríamos prepararnos para formar nuestro hogar y ser independientes por eso durante el tiempo de novios ahorramos mucho” recuerda Freddy. Sus primeros meses de casados, fueron una mezcla de ajustes y aprendizajes que incluyó adecuar su hogar, aprender a usar sus recursos económicos independientemente, continuar formándose académicamente y además prepararse para recibir su regalo de aniversario dando la bienvenida a su primer hijo, quien nació exactamente la misma fecha en que se habían casado doce meses atrás. La familia creció dando la bienvenida a su segundo hijo. Como esto supone, debieron hacer ajustes para cumplir sus nuevas responsabilidades. Nancy cuidaba los niños y Freddy trabajaba doble jornada. A pesar de los impactos económicos mantuvieron una actitud positiva: “No teníamos lujos y vivimos por mucho tiempo con lo necesario, pero éramos felices con lo que teníamos” comenta Nancy. Hoy día, las limitaciones económicas también afectan a muchas familias que se inician y la práctica de los esposos Reyes durante ese momento es un buen ejemplo para cambiar circunstancias fuertes por oportunidades: “Disfrutábamos a plenitud los momentos juntos con nuestros hijos. Actividades poco costosas pero que nos unía cada vez más como familia. Siempre ha sido importante dedicarnos tiempo con dulzura”. Ellos han aprendido el valor de mantener vivo el amor por medio de “sorprenderse con pequeños

detalles diarios” que expresan su cariño y no perder la “admiración del uno hacia el otro”. También han sabido madurar ese amor y llevarlo a la acción reconociendo las virtudes de cada uno y aprovechándolas como explica Freddy: “En casa el liderazgo se comparte. Si hay una algo que alguno puede manejar mejor, ese es quien lo lleva a cabo. Confiamos el uno en el otro”. Sin embargo, conocen y aceptan sus limitaciones apoyándose con tolerancia, evitando hacer cualquier comentario negativo con terceras personas sobre las fallas de su cónyuge. En ese mismo sentido, para los esposos Reyes el dialogo es fundamental. La capacidad de comunicarse con sinceridad sin herirse o disgustarse: “Siempre hemos evitado que las conversaciones terminen en peleas. Si es necesario hablar de algo, lo hacemos con respeto”. Aunque deban discutir asuntos serios, no dejan que las cosas pequeñas se agranden, ya que “los problemas comienzan si la pareja se acostumbra a pelear por tonterías como el gusto de una camisa”. Los esposos Reyes aconsejan evitar ir a dormir molestos, y en su lugar buscar conciliación en un ambiente de armonía en donde se acostumbre reconocer las fallas y pedir perdón. Desde su punto de vista, la tolerancia se aprende por medio de “escuchar a la otra persona y entenderlo con comprensión y ternura”. La fe ha sido otro factor muy importante en la vida de los esposos Reyes: “Nuestras familias eran muy religiosas y nos enseñaron la importancia del amor a Dios y a los demás. En lo que llegamos a casa de nuestra ceremonia de bodas, colgamos un crucifijo en la cabecera de nuestra cama y una imagen de la Virgen de Coromoto en nuestra sala que nos acompañan desde entonces”. Su fe y la constante oración juntos los ha llevado a dejar “sus acciones y decisiones en manos de Dios”, sintiéndose bendecidos por la “fuerza y paz en los momentos duros” y agradecidos por los momentos felices. A lo largo

de su vida, la fe los ha motivado a ayudar a otros matrimonios en dificultades y en busca de consejo para sobrellevar sus problemas. Aun ahora, participan en grupos que brindan formación y guía a esposos, y se mantienen activos varias actividades dentro de la Iglesia. Durante todos estos años ha sabido apoyarse mutuamente para hacer realidad su visión de familia y disfrutar junto a sus hijos muchos logros, como comenta Nancy: “Ha sido un gran orgullo cada triunfo de nuestros hijos. Nuestro corazón se llenó de alegría con tantas bendiciones, como la que Freddy llegara a ser uno de los profesores que les dio clase en la universidad a nuestros dos hijos y que luego pudiera ponerles su medalla de graduación”. Según el entendimiento de los esposos Reyes, algunos problemas de las parejas hoy día comienzan al no darle la importancia debida al matrimonio, no dedicarse tiempo y perder el fundamento más importante que es “El Amor”. Su concepto del amor pleno lo toman de la Biblia donde describe que el amor es “paciente y bondadoso, no es orgulloso, no es egoísta, no se enoja fácilmente… todo lo supera, lo espera y lo soporta”. Sus vidas demuestran que un matrimonio de éxito “Si se puede”.

Lesbia y Cristóbal Luzardo: “Ser capaz de adaptarse y entregarse sin reservas por la felicidad del otro” esbia y Cristóbal Luzardo son un gran ejemplo de amor, valor por la familia y adaptación. Sus miradas y la forma jovial de conversar bastan para transmitir el dinamismo que se vive en su hogar. Al preguntarles cómo se conocieron, ambos sonríen al recordar el día en que Lesbia comenzó a trabajar en el negocio que Cristóbal acababa de abrir junto a unos familiares. Nunca se imaginaron que dos años y medio después, en septiembre de 1963, serian ellos lo que dieran inicio a la empresa más satisfactoria de sus vidas...su propia familia de cuatro hijos y nueve nietos. La juventud que tenían al contraer matrimonio no fue sinónimo de inmadurez. Por el contrario, el ejemplo que habían recibido de sus padres cuyos matrimonios también fueron largos, les había mostrado exactamente qué esperar al casarse. Recuerdan haber dedicado tiempo a conocerse, planear su futuro y sus metas juntos: “Queríamos un matrimonio estable y una familia. Habíamos decidido casarnos cuando construyéramos nuestra propia casa y gracias a que vivíamos en un pueblo pequeño con algunas facilidades, pudimos lograrlo” recuerda Cristóbal. Iniciando con las conversaciones que mantuvieron en su noviazgo, Lesbia y Cristóbal aprendieron la importancia del dialogo y la comunicación. Buscaban compenetrarse como pareja creando las bases de un matrimonio exitoso. “En esa época no había tantos entretenimientos como ahora. No se dedicaba tanto tiempo a la televisión o a los aparatos modernos que limitaran el tiempo en pareja. Nos acostumbramos a hablar de nuestras cosas, fijarnos metas, hacer proyectos, reír y compartir las anécdotas del día a día. Eso siempre nos ha ayudado.”, comenta Lesbia. Otro secreto que los esposos Luzardo aprendieron desde sus comienzos, es que en el matrimonio hay que estar abiertos a adaptarse a las nuevas circunstancias aunque sean difíciles e impliquen sacrificios: “Cuando nuestra empresa creció hasta convertirse en la más grande y lucrativa de la zona, esa prosperidad nos trajo mucha preocupación, largas horas de trabajo y noches sin dormir. Llego un punto en el que preferimos no tener ese dinero, y más bien disfrutar de una vida familiar más tranquila”. Eso implicó renuncias a ciertas comodidades, pero también trajo sus beneficios: “Nos mudamos a una finca, limitamos nuestros ingresos al dedicábamos a la actividad agropecuaria y los niños comenzaron a llegar. Ahora vemos que fue una buena decisión porque vivimos más calmados y nuestros hijos tienen muy bonitos recuerdos de su infancia en ese lugar”.

Como la vida monótona no va con los Luzardo, los cambios siempre han formado parte de sus vidas. Mudanzas de ciudad o país por búsqueda de mejores condiciones de vida, educación de sus hijos, la cercanía con los nietos, apertura de nuevas fuentes de ingresos y hasta diferentes vacaciones, han sido razones para salir de la rutina y dejar al lado cualquier temor. ¿Su motivación? Buscar sin reservas la felicidad del otro. Los Luzardo han sabido valorar el bienestar familiar ya que esto ayuda a las parejas a mantenerse unidos a pesar de las presiones externas y creencias del ambiente actual. En palabras de Cristóbal: “Es triste decirlo, pero muchas familias se separan porque no tienen claro el concepto de familia o el impacto que tiene en los hijos la separación de los padres, la falta de amor o el calor de hogar. Siempre he creído que para poder enseñar a nuestros hijos la importancia de la unión, debemos tener la moral que da un buen ejemplo, la fidelidad entre los padres y cuidarse el uno al otro”. Lesbia añade: “Muchas parejas van predispuestas al matrimonio y se casan pensando: ‘Si no funciona, nos separamos’, y eso no ayuda”. Un aspecto interesante que resaltan los esposos Luzardo es que el matrimonio exige cambio con el paso del tiempo. Lesbia explica: “El amor y el interés de estar juntos nos mueve a ir madurando en la relación. Comprender que no podemos ser las mismas personas siempre. Somos parte de una familia y tener resistencia a la adaptación no es bueno. Crecer en el matrimonio implica aprender a ceder y tener calma”. Por su parte Cristóbal opina: “A veces los hombres no nos involucramos ni para cambiar un pañal, porque pensamos que estamos muy ocupados trabajando, pero con el tiempo comprendemos que hay que hacer más. Me alegra que muchos esposos jóvenes sean preocupados por sus esposas y se involucren en el cuidado de sus hijos”. Con su alegría característica añade: “Ahora estoy más consciente que debo mantenerme activo, todos los días busco ayudar en casa preguntándome ¿Cómo puedo ha-

cerla más feliz?” La fe también ha estado muy presente en la vida de Lesbia y Cristóbal Luzardo. Su amor por Dios los ha llevado a demostrar paciencia y tolerancia, y no pensar de forma egoísta. Los ha ayudado a sacar lo positivo de todo y ver el futuro con esperanza. Por eso aconsejan a los jóvenes que al escoger sus futuros cónyuges tomen tiempo para ver más allá de las apariencias, que descubran los valores de la otra persona y compartan la misma fe. La experiencia de vida de los esposos Luzardo evidencia que el amor y el apoyo mutuo hace posible tener un matrimonio feliz y armonioso. Han

hecho de su unión la base de todos sus logros, y como tal lo han cuidado, protegido y hecho florecer. Hoy día, que sus hijos ya han formado sus propias familias, Lesbia y Cristóbal disfrutan con alegría del resultado de su esfuerzo. No muchos tienen el privilegio de vivir experiencias como la de los esposos Reyes y Luzardo, por eso son una verdadera fuente de inspiración a los matrimonios que se esfuerzan por mantenerse juntos en la sociedad actual. Es cierto que los tiempos han cambiado y los retos de hoy día son diferentes, pero estos esposos han demostrado que a pesar de todos los altos y bajos que presenta la vida, si se puede disfrutar de un matrimonio feliz y duradero, que promueve familias más unidas y una sociedad más estable. Como ambos concluyen “todo vale la pena” y “la recompensa es maravillosa”.

“We are one in everything”

he home of Ninoska Pérez Castellón and Roberto Martin Pérez is a place where Cuba lives and breathes, because their love story is interwoven with the history of the island, the exile, their struggle, their political activism and the shared dream of seeing a free country. It is impossible to tell one story without the other. Beautiful folk paintings preside over the entrance, many of them depicting images of “Cachita”, Our Lady of Charity, and Patroness of Cuba. The delicious aroma of the ‘colada’ the sweet and strong coffee, symbol of Cubans’ generous nature and their friendship offering welcomes us. A cushion on the couch bears an inscription, almost a mantra: “Next year in Havana”. Every single object in the house reflects their selfimposed, shared lifetime mission: help Cuba become free of communism. Roberto Martín Pérez is legendary, inside and outside Cuban territory, for being the longestkept political prisoner by the Castro regime. His character toughened during those 28 years and his courage allowed him to become leader of the ‘plantados’, the prisoners that did not bend their will to the tyrant, despite all torture and mistreatment they suffered. After being released in 1987 he has been a tireless activist for the recovery of Cuba as a country free of communism: “My soul, my heart, it is all there. I am entirely Cuban.” Meanwhile, Ninoska Pérez Castellón has been his constant companion on this crusade from the beginning, even before meeting him in person. Her work as a journalist and political commentator, primarily through her daily show in Radio Mambí, has been the outlet for the community to express their complaints about human rights violations in Cuba, and also to educate Cubans inside and outside the island about the possibility and the dream of having a democratic country. The campaigns and signed petitions that Ninoska championed from Miami were crucial for the release of Roberto. “Here we campaigned for the prisoners’ welfare, and I wanted to do it for him because at that time it was he who had spent more time in jail. When you personalize an issue like this it has more impact. They had just published here his book of poems written in prison, it had won a prize.

Therefore it was a good time to draw attention to his situation and his condition of ‘plantado’ and all the things that had happened to him over the years. “ As a result of that campaign and with the intervention of General Manuel Antonio Noriega, Roberto was released through Panama on May 29, 1987, after 28 years and 3 days of suffering the hell of Cuban jails. Literally right out of the plane he met Ninoska, his “Nino” as he lovingly calls her. They have been together ever since.

“I saw her and fell in love”

Listening to them telling their story together is a delight. It is a kind of a contemporary history lecture, mixed with an ode to true love, the kind of love that is able to transcend all boundaries and obstacles to reach a common goal. The story of Roberto and Ninoska inspires to believe that at any point in life love arrives when people are ready to receive it. “I came out of prison and had a life plan in mind, marriage was not part of it” says Roberto. “I thought to continue my endeavor. Thank God Ninoska has never been an obstacle. We have agreed on everything. Just arriving in Panama, I looked at her and thought ‘there goes my plan, this is it!’ I did not know if she was married, I knew nothing about her. But there she was. God blessed me with Ninoska’s presence. I just saw her and fell in love. “ Roberto’s stunning personality was not unknown to Ninoska. He was a legendary character; she had read the letters and poems he had written in prison. “I went to meet him in Panama, like many other journalists. And I wanted to know him because he was a person I had met through listening to other

peoples’ tales. Freed prisoners spoke of him, telling his stories. I wanted to meet him.” In addition, their parents were friends and had worked together in Cuba when Roberto was in his teens. “I met Ninoska when she was 6 or 7 years old. My father sent bunnies and little gifts for his friend’s daughter. I took them to her house, but it never crossed my mind that in time that little girl would become my wife.” In the terrible conditions of Castro’s prisons these men, the ‘plantados de Boniatico’, toughened their bodies and their souls standing strong-willed through forced work, illnesses, hunger, abuse and loneliness, without yielding to the authorities: “without medical assistance or visits or packages from family; without any kind of communication with the outside. This group of men, I have to tell you, they truly are my blood. They are my life” says Roberto. He was unaware of the details and magnitude of the campaign Ninoska and other activists had developed to achieve his release. When he met her, the first thing that attracted Roberto was her character and integrity. “She was very clear on her definition of marriage, because for me it is the closest connection with a woman, two human beings together where there is a more than a personal but a family commitment.” A few days later, Roberto dared to ask her out: “Ninoska, tonight is ours.” She accepted his invitation to have dinner. “We had seen each other often, because there were many activities involving many people. Finally we had a quiet night and we got to know each other.” Three months later they were married, on September 21, 1987.

“She is my life, she just is”

“I had an advantage because I knew about him” Ninoska says. “He was a person who had all the qualities that I could admire; a man of principle and integrity, with a strong character. He was a legend, a man who had spent 28 years in prison resisting all suffering. Roberto is a person who is extremely worthy. He must have been very strong to survive. However, he can be perceived sometimes as harsh, but he is very noble and has a sweet nature. He is a man of integrity, with a big heart. “

“Of course I’m thinking”

In prison sometimes those men had access to books guards or eventual visitors brought them. Also some clandestine radios they used to hide in the walls or ceiling joists. That was the only way to stay somewhat informed of what was happening outside the prison walls. Having access to pen and paper was even harder. But when they got them, they used them to empty their despair, the sadness of their losses and the hope of one day recovering their country for the future generations. It is a moving experience to touch the delicate papers with tiny print where Roberto Martin Perez wrote his poems in jail that Ninoska closely guards in a box. “They were able to get their writings out of the prison in small paper rolls, with very small print and we had to use rulers and spend hours deciphering everything they had written.” Whole books were written that way. They are pieces for a museum of Cuban history, treasures and testimony that enclose the experiences of many men, martyrs to their beliefs and convictions, who spent more time together in prison than with their families. They preferred to die rather than submitting their will to the tyrant Castro. Roberto wrote two books of poetry: “The Blood from Other Veins” and “Of course I’m thinking”. The latter was dedicated to the martyrs who died in prison and he wrote it in one night. “I do not know if it was the hunger I was going through, but I felt that these men came and spoke to me. I asked another prisoner for a pencil and he passed it to me through a hole in the wall. I grabbed the roll of paper the guards had just given us, and started writing. Those poems poured out of my mind all at once. “ Ninoska said that the day of the book launch here

Ninoska: “I like to be by his side, to be his companion”

People said it felt like there were these men telling their own stories through those poems” “To me these men who died there beside me in the hunger strike are indelible human beings,” says Roberto. “I have never learned to hate. But I can tell you, no one involved with Castro’s regime can be my friend, because I would be betraying the blood of those men. If you get to some degree within that system then to me you have been co-participant of their misery and I demand justice. “

“Why are you imprisoned Roberto?”

Roberto Martín Pérez was only 22 when he got caught for participating in a conspiracy against Castro. In prison he meets Roberto Lopez Chávez “the brightest man I’ve ever met.” At 17, Lopez Chavez was politically mature enough to hold on to his ideas and had the strength to face the system and to die for his cause. “I learned a lot from him,” says Roberto. “He was a man of action, with solid ideas.” Roberto learned from him and from other prisoners that he was fighting a whole system, not one man. “I’m not anti-Fidel but anticommunist, because I do not know of a country under that doctrine that has succeeded. I believe very much in democracy and I think we all need to think to be better men.” His work after arriving in Miami has focused on developing a plan for the future of Cuba, along with Jorge Mas Canosa and the Cuban American National Foundation, and nowadays with the Cuban Liberty Council, “an idealistic plan for Cuba in the future. We will take care of the needs of the people when we are able to overthrow this system. My hope was that, even from jail. I don’t want anybody

“Roberto has been a great man without having a woman behind him. I like to be by his side, to be his companion, but I do not have any credit on his ideals and his dreams. We have grown both in the same direction. One has to be very patient and work hard to pursue happiness; things do not just fall from heaven. Like everything in life, one has to engage, align and compensate each other. “ Roberto and Ninoska spend most of their time and energy working on their passion for getting to see a free Cuba. “Those are the things you share. It is the essence of two people who make the best out of themselves and walk together, hand in hand in the same direction. The interest in politics does not end because I think we have not seen the result in the case of Cuba. I think that you are able to think of doing something else and move on after you see the result of something you fought for. The problem is that, we have not yet seen the result. “ Meanwhile, “after the phones stop ringing,” Ninoska spends her little free time painting her beautiful watercolors and Roberto focuses on caring for and protecting her. “I have no hobbies, really none. I devote all my life to Ninoska first and then to Cuba. Ninoska has been God’s blessing to me. She knows that and everyone that knows me know that too.” They just ask for the future the freedom of Cuba, “Peace, love and good health”, to continue being an example of love and commitment to the new generations.

“Ninoska defends her principles and values” Roberto defines her. “Those who know her know she is a ‘sabra’ a fruit from the desert that may seem harsh, but inside is very sweet and soft. Ninoska is my life, she just is.” Although they may argue for simple, routinely things like all couples do, in the fundamentals, principles and ideas they always agree. “We are one in everything,” Roberto says, “We’re both really mature. The hardships of prison forged my character.” “You have to work hard to pursue happiness; I think a very important thing in a marriage is that everyone must be able to be its own person,” said Ninoska. “I do not think a person has to become a piece of the other. Each one has their place and ways”. Their shared passion for someday seeing a free Cuba completes their entire schedule and “leaves no time for much more.”

n la casa de Ninoska Pérez Castellón y Roberto Martin Pérez se vive y se respira Cuba, porque su historia de amor está entretejida con la historia del exilio, de la lucha, del activismo político y el sueño de una Patria libre. Es imposible contar una historia sin la otra. Desde los hermosos cuadros costumbristas, la imagen de la Virgen de la Caridad que preside la entrada y el aroma delicioso del café, hasta un cojín en la butaca que, como un mantra, proclama “El Próximo año en La Habana”, su hogar refleja esa pasión compartida. No es para menos. Roberto Martín Pérez es legendario dentro y fuera del territorio cubano por haber sido de los presos políticos que más tiempo mantuvo el régimen castrista y quien con temple y valentía estuvo ‘plantado’ por casi 28 años, sin doblegarse a pesar de las torturas y maltratos de los cuales fue objeto. Era líder entre sus compañeros y una vez fuera, ha sido incansable como activista para lograr la recuperación de Cuba como un país libre del comunismo: “Yo tengo los dos pies allá; soy íntegramente cubano”. Por su parte, Ninoska Pérez Castellón ha sido su compañera fiel en esa cruzada desde el principio, aun antes de conocerlo personalmente. Su trabajo como periodista y comentarista política principalmente a través de su programa en Radio Mambí, ha sido herramienta fundamental para llevar a la comunidad las denuncias sobre las violaciones de derechos humanos en Cuba y también para informar a los cubanos dentro y fuera de la isla que si es posible y vital soñar con una Patria libre y democrática. Las campañas de denuncia y recolección de firmas realizadas por Ninoska fueron clave para lograr la liberación de Roberto. “Cuando él estaba preso, aquí hacíamos campaña para los presos y yo quería hacerlo porque en aquel momento él era quien más tiempo llevaba en la cárcel. Cuando uno personaliza una cosa como esta tiene más impacto. Habían acabado de publicar aquí su libro de poemas escritos en la cárcel que se había ganado un premio y era un buen momento para llamar la atención sobre la situación de él en prisión y más en las condiciones en que estaba ‘plantado’ y todas las cosas que

le habían pasado.” Como resultado de esa campaña y con la intervención del General Manuel Antonio Noriega, se logró la liberación de Roberto a través de Panamá el 29 de mayo de 1987, después de 28 años y 3 días sufriendo el infierno de las cárceles cubanas. Literalmente al bajarse del avión conoció a Ninoska, su “Nino” como la llama amorosamente. Hasta el sol de hoy.

“Yo la vi y me enamoré de ella”

Escucharlos juntos contar su historia de amor y lucha es un deleite. Es una clase de historia contemporánea y a la vez una oda al amor verdadero, capaz de trascender cualquier frontera y obstáculo para lograr un objetivo común. La historia de Ninoska y Roberto inspira a creer que en cualquier momento de la vida el amor llega cuando las personas están listas para recibirlo. “Yo salí de prisión y tenía mi destino marcado, menos el del matrimonio”, cuenta Roberto. “Pensaba seguir mi lucha. Y gracias a Dios Ninoska no ha sido un obstáculo. Hemos coincidido en todo. Llegué a Panamá, la miré y dije ‘Ya me partieron el plan. Esta es’. No sabía si era casada, no sabía nada. Pero era ella. Con Ninoska Dios me bendijo. Fue así. Yo la vi y me enamoré de ella.” La avasallante personalidad de Roberto no era

extraña para Ninoska. Él era legendario y ella había leído las cartas y poemas que había escrito en la cárcel. “Yo fui a recibirlo a Panamá, como muchos otros periodistas. Y además lo quería conocer porque era una persona de la que había estado escuchando a través de otros. Los presos hablaban de él, contaban sus anécdotas”. Además, los padres de ambos eran amigos y habían trabajado juntos en Cuba y en su adolescencia Roberto la había visto siendo muy niña. “Yo conozco a Ninoska de cuando tenía 6 o 7 años. Mi padre le mandaba a ella conejitos y regalitos. Yo se los llevaba; nunca me pasó por la mente que en el tiempo ella iba a ser mi esposa”. En las terribles condiciones de las cárceles castristas estos hombres, los 146 ‘presos plantados’ de Boniatico, se curtieron y hermanaron a fuerza de trabajo, escasez, maltratos y soledad, sin doblegarse al sistema; “sin asistencia médica, ni correspondencia, ni visitas, ni paquetes. Sin comunicación de ningún tipo con el exterior. Ese grupo de hombres, te lo digo de verdad, son mi sangre. Ellos son mi vida”, comenta Roberto. Él desconocía los detalles y la magnitud de la campaña que Ninoska y otros activistas habían desarrollado para lograr su liberación. Al conocerla, lo primero que le atrajo de ella fue su formación, su carácter y su integridad, “con conceptos muy definidos de lo que puede ser un matrimonio, porque para mí ese es el vínculo más estrecho con una mujer, dos seres humanos que se unen, donde hay un compromiso familiar, más que personal“. Roberto se atrevió a invitarla unos días más tarde “Ninoska, esta noche es nuestra”. Ella le aceptó la invitación a comer “Nos habíamos visto frecuentemente, porque había muchas actividades, mucha gente. Finalmente tuvimos una noche tranquila y nos pudimos conocer”. A los 3 meses se casaron, el 21 de Septiembre de 1987.

“Ella es mi vida, sencillamente así”

“Yo tenía una ventaja, porque sabía de el” dice Ninoska. ”Era una persona que para mí reunía todas las cualidades que yo podía admirar. Un hombre de principios, de integridad. De una fortaleza increíble.

Roberto tiene dos poemarios “De la Sangre de Otras venas” y “Claro que estoy pensando”, este último lo dedicó a los mártires que murieron en prisión y lo escribió en una noche. “No sé si era el hambre o que era, pero sentía que esos hombres venían y me hablaban. Le pedí a otro el lápiz y me lo paso por un hueco. Agarré el rollo de papel que nos acababan de dar, ellos que nunca nos daban nada, y empecé a escribir. El poemario me salió de una tirada”. Ninoska cuenta que el día de la presentación del libro aquí en Miami “fue de esos días en que se siente que hay magia en el ambiente, como dicen ‘hay duende’. La gente decía que se sentía como que

En prisión a veces tenían acceso a los libros que les hacían llegar. Al igual que algunos radios clandestinos que escondían entre las paredes o las vigas del techo. Eran la manera de mantenerse de algún modo informados de lo que sucedía afuera. Tener acceso a lápiz y papel era aún más difícil. Sin embargo cuando lo lograban plasmaban en ellos la desesperación del encierro, la tristeza de las pérdidas y la esperanza de recuperar la Patria para el futuro. Es una experiencia conmovedora tener en las manos los delicados papeles donde con diminuta letra Roberto Martín Pérez escribió sus poemas en la cárcel y que Ninoska guarda celosamente. “Las cosas salían en papeles muy pequeños, con letra muy pequeña y había que usar las reglas para leer los listados de las computadoras y estar horas para lograr descifrar todo eso”. Libros enteros fueron escritos de esa forma. Son piezas para un museo de historia cubana, tesoros y testimonio que encierran las vivencias de tantos hombres, mártires de sus creencias y convicciones, que pasaron más tiempo de su vida juntos en presi-

Con él y con otros presos, Roberto comprendió que estaba combatiendo un sistema, no a un solo hombre. “Yo no soy anti fidelista sino anticomunista. Porque no conozco un país bajo esa doctrina que salga adelante. Yo creo mucho en la democracia y creo que todos tenemos necesidad de pensar para ser hombres mejores”. A los 17 años López Chávez tenía la madurez política necesaria para enfrentar el sistema y hasta morir por su causa. “Yo aprendí mucho con él”, cuenta

“Roberto ha sido un hombre grande sin tener una mujer detrás. Me gusta estar a su lado, ser su compañera, pero no creo que tenga parte en haberlo formado. Hemos crecido los dos en la misma dirección. Hay que tener mucha paciencia. La felicidad uno la tiene que buscar, tienes que trabajar para ella; las cosas no caen del cielo. Como todo en la vida, Uno tiene que acoplarse, buscar como compensar uno con el otro.” Ninoska y Roberto dedican la mayor parte de su tiempo y energía a su pasión por llegar a ver a Cuba libre. “Son las cosas que uno comparte. Es la esencia de dos personas que encuentran lo mejor de sí mismos y caminan juntos, de la mano. Este interés por la política no termina porque yo creo que en el caso de los cubanos no hemos visto el resultado. Yo creo que después que ves el resultado de algo por lo que luchaste entonces piensas que puedes dedicarte a otra cosa. El problema es ese, que no hemos visto el resultado.” Mientras tanto, su poco tiempo libre “después que dejan de sonar los teléfonos”, Ninoska lo dedica a pintar sus hermosas acuarelas y Roberto a cuidarla y protegerla a ella. “Realmente no tengo hobbies ninguno. Hace rato le dedico mi vida toda primero a Ninoska y después a Cuba. Ninoska ha sido la bendición de Dios para mí. Eso lo sabe ella y lo sabe todo el que me trata a mí.” Solo le piden al futuro la libertad de Cuba, “Mucha paz, mucho amor y mucha salud”, para seguir siendo ejemplo con su amor y compromiso para las nuevas generaciones.

En sí, una leyenda. Un hombre que había estado 28 años resistiendo dentro de una prisión. Roberto es una persona que es extremadamente noble. Tuvo que haber sido muy fuerte para sobrevivir. A veces lo puedes percibir como muy fuerte, pero él es muy noble y de buenos sentimientos. Él es un hombre íntegro, con un gran corazón”. “Ninoska defiende sus principios y sus valores, lo que sabe que tiene que defender”, la define Roberto; “quien la conoce sabe que es un ‘sabra’, un fruto del desierto que puede parecer duro, pero que por dentro es muy dulce y suavecito. Ninoska es mi vida, sencillamente así”. Aunque puedan discutir por cosas simples y rutinarias como todas las parejas, en los fundamentos, principios e ideas están siempre de acuerdo. “Somos uno solo en todo”, dice Roberto, “los dos somos maduros de verdad. La prisión a mí me forjó mucho.” “Uno tiene que trabajar a buscar la felicidad, tú tienes que trabajar y creo que una cosa muy importante en un matrimonio es que cada uno tiene que poder ser su persona”, explica Ninoska. “No creo que una persona tenga que convertirse en un pedazo del otro. Briana Vega’s Gives a Face to Bone Marrow Transplant

riana Vega is a beautiful 11-year old child who is desperately fighting to stay alive. On February 22, 2012, Briana was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with the Philadelphia Chromosome positive. She started Chemotherapy immediately at Miami Childrens Hospital and 29 days later, her team of Doctors managed to get her into remission. Due to the nature and details of her cancer, her protocol is very vigorous and high risk since the Philadelphia Chromosome is positive. She has been following her protocol with no problems and testing negative to the cancer as well as the Philadelphia Chromosome up until around Oct. 8, 2013 when she started feeling severe pains on her lower back the last day of an 8 day radiation session. After a series of tests, her Doctors said that her cancer had come back and needed to modify her protocol due to the fact this time around it was a secondary cancer and not her ALL +PH. This time around it was Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Due to her protocol being high risk, some chemotherapy drugs need to be given in high doses and one of the ones that she received in many stages of the protocol can lead to a secondary disease. So the chemo worked for one but caused another disease. Now she is

at a point that she needs a bone marrow transplant but unfortunately the two donors from the registry the doctors had are no longer available. One opted to be taken off the list and the other one is in Australia and they can’t locate them. Now her family and friends are asking for everyone who can and is willing to step up and become a donor so we can find a match for Briana. Since then she has received more intense chemotherapy sessions and her team of Doctors decided that the best plan of action for her is to do a bone marrow transplant. Throughout her journey, Briana has been very active in making people more aware of pediatric cancer and raising funds for Miami Childrens Hospital Foundation where she is a junior ambassador for the hospital. She was the guest speaker at the 2012 Miami Childrens Hospital Diamond Ball which is the largest yearly charity gala to raise funds. That night over $4 million dollars were raised as she gave a very moving and inspiring speech to a crowd of over 700 attendees. She

has been a part of the Bald Brave and Beautiful campaign of the hospital and even sang alongside Gloria Gaynor in a video to promote awareness in pediatric cancer. She has been on numerous TV interviews including NBC Channel 6, WSVN Channel 7, CNN en Espanol, and in newspapers. She even got to walk the run way in a fashion show from famous Miami designer Rene Ruiz. Rene Ruiz met Briana at the Diamond Ball and decided to make a dress for her and put her in one of his fashion shows. Briana is also recipient of the 2012 “Champion of the Human Spirit Award” from the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami division. She is the first child to receive this award from this free cancer support center. Stand Up, Speak Out on behalf of Children Informed parents can influence legislature that impact public education By Maria Alejandra Pulgar

n January 16th 2014 Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School hosted a special Advocacy Training sponsored by the Miami Dade County Council PTSA Legislative Committee and the Office of Parental Involvement of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. This was the third training that has been taking place in the different areas of the county (Feeder Patterns) and there will be another one on February 20th during the Miami Dade County Council General Meeting. The objective of these trainings is to educate parents and the community on the method for funding public education in the State of Florida, to create awareness on several legislative decisions that if taken can affect the amount of those funds and how they are administered, and to instruct the community on how to approach their legislators to provide them with the information they need to do an effective job in Tallahassee, championing the true interests of their constituents in the upcoming Legislative Session that starts March 4th. Introduced by Sharon Watson, President of the Miami-Dade County Council PTSA, the main part of the presentation was given by Mrs. Iraida Mendez-Cartaya, Assistant Superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She provided a detailed explanation of the politics of education, i.e. the impact of legislative decisions on public education funding at all levels, the entities responsible for making those decisions and the items that constitute the FEFP (Florida Education Finance Program), the formula to determine how much money is allocated each year to allow districts to provide the service of Education in the State of Florida. The other presenters in the workshop were Miami-Dade County Public Schools CFO Ms. Judy Martell and Ms. Nancy Lawther, Legislative Committee Chair of the Miami-Dade County Council PTA. In attendance from the City of Doral was Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera. “It is critical for people to engage the process for legislators to know what people think” explained Mendez-Cartaya, citing that Public Education is a fundamental right and a paramount duty of the state to have high quality on that service, as guaranteed on the Florida Constitution. “It is up to the people to determine if it is done by the legislators”.

The Politics of Education and where does the money come from?

The State of Florida Constitution establishes the Board of Education as an entity composed by 7 members, appointed by the Governor, who enforces compliance with law and state board rule by all school districts. Each of the 67 school districts of the State of Florida has a School Board, composed by 5 or 9 elected members, depending of the size of the County. The Miami-Dade County School Board is composed of 9 members. The School Board Member for District 5 (that includes Doral) is Ms. Susie Castillo. Depending on the County, the School Board Superintendent is elected or appointed. In Miami-Dade it is an appointed position, selected by the School Board and currently the Superintendent is Mr. Alberto Carvalho. The role of the School Boards is to operate, control and supervise all free public schools; determine the rate of school district taxes; determine policies and programs; assign students to schools; approve budget and appoint Superintendent, whereas the Superintendent administers and manages the schools; supervises instruction; advises, counsels and recommends to School Board; recommend and implement rules and standards and propose tentative budget. The funds for the education budget administered by the School Board have three

main components: Local funds from property taxes; State Funds, a percentage of the State General Revenue and Federal Funds. Many of the items that compose the FEFP that come from state funds are affected by legislative decisions, in an effort to meet the changing needs of Florida’s diverse population.

Key Issues for 2014 Session

The Miami-Dade County School Board provided attendees to the workshop with a list of Legislative Priority positions to be proposed to Legislators in order for them to have items discussed during the 2014 Florida Legislative Session and the Second Session of the 113th US Congress. Key items on those positions are among others: Funding/ Flexibility: including an increase on the Base Student Allocation to begin to bridge the gap between current levels of per-pupil funding and prerecession levels; Support maximum flexibility in the use of funds appropriated. Increase funding for Safe Schools. Class Size Reduction: modify the assessment of the penalty associated with noncompliance to the school-wide average as it is applied to charter schools Dual Enrollment: Allow local school districts to locally establish contract provisions with post-secondary institutions that provide this service. Capital Funding: fully fund provisions for construction and maintenance programs of public school districts Accountability: Ensure that state assessments and accountability systems are valid, reliable and aligned to the state standards Parent Empowerment: oppose changes regarding conversions of traditional public schools to charter schools that dilute the role of parents, teachers and community stakeholders. Support the existence of School Advisory Councils. Charter Schools: improve safeguards and transparency for taxpayer investments between traditional public schools and charter schools including requiring funding to follow the student when transferring between charter and traditional public schools during the entire school year. People’s involvement and participation on these workshops allow them to make informed decisions and to demand from the right authorities timely actions. l Comité Legislativo del PTSA de Miami-Dade County y la Oficina de Participación de los Padres de las Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade ofrecieron el pasado 16 de Enero un entrenamiento con el objetivo educar a los padres y a la comunidad sobre el origen de los fondos para Educación Publica en Florida, crear conciencia sobre las decisiones legislativas que pueden impactar esos fondos y su administración, e instruir a la comunidad en la manera correcta para comunicar a sus legisladores sus necesidades, de manera que estos puedan realizar un trabajo efectivo al defender los inSra. Iraida Mendez-Cartaya tereses de sus ciudadanos durante la próxima sesión legislativa que comenzará el 4 de Marzo. La introducción del evento fue realizada por la Sra. Sharon Watson, presidente del MDCC PTSA y la porción principal de la charla estuvo a cargo de la Sra. Iraida Mendez-Cartaya, Asistente del Superintendente de Escuelas de Miami-Dade. Ella explicó los intríngulis políticos que influyen en las decisiones relativas a educación, cómo esas decisiones legislativas tienen un impacto financiero, quiénes son las entidades responsables de tomarlas y cuáles son los elementos que componen el FEFP (Programa de Financiamiento para la Educación en Florida), es decir, la fórmula para calcular la cantidad de dinero reservada cada año para que cada distrito pueda proveer el servicio gratuito de Educación a los habitantes del Estado de Florida. Las otras personas participantes en el evento fueron la CFO de las Escuelas de Miami-Dade Sra. Judy Martell y la Sra. Nancy Lawther, coordinadora del Comité Legislativo del MDCC PTSA. La Política en Educación y el origen de los fondos

La Constitución del Estado de Florida establece el Board de Educación como una entidad compuesta por 7 miembros designados por el gobernador, dedicada a velar por el cumplimiento de las leyes estatales en todos los distritos educativos. Cada uno de los 67 distritos en Florida tiene su propio Board compuesto por 5 a 9 miembros electos, dependiendo del tamaño del Condado. El Board de Educación de Miami-Dade está compuesto por 9 miembros electos. La miembro correspondiente al Distrito 5 que incluye Doral es la Sra. Susie Castillo. Dependiendo del Condado el Superintendente de Educación es seleccionado o electo por el pueblo. En Miami-Dade es designado por el Board y actualmente es el Sr. Alberto Carvalho. La labor del Board es operar, controlar y supervisar la operación de todas las

escuelas públicas gratuitas; determinar la porción de impuestos distritales para las escuelas; definir políticas y programas; Asignar estudiantes a las escuelas; aprobar presupuesto y designar al Superintendente. Este último se ocupa de supervisar, aconsejar y hacer recomendaciones al Board sobre las reglas y procedimientos y proponer un presupuesto inicial. Los fondos del presupuesto provienen de 3 fuentes diferentes: fondos locales de los impuestos a la propiedad; un porcentaje de los ingresos generales del Estado y fondos Federales. Muchos de los elementos que componen el FEFP provienen de fondos estatales que se ven afectados por las decisiones legislativas que se toman con el objetivo de cubrir las necesidades de la diversa población del estado de Florida.

Puntos principales para la Sesión Legislativa 2014

Durante el taller, el MDCPS Board entregó a los asistentes una lista de las posiciones legislativas prioritarias que los residentes pueden proponer a sus representantes para que estos las lleven a discusión durante la Sesión Legislativa de Florida 2014 y durante el 113vo. Congreso de los EEUU. Entre otras, las posiciones y propuestas sugeridas son las siguientes: Fondos / Flexibilidad: incluir un incremento en la Cuota Base por estudiante, que permita ir reduciendo la brecha en los fondos hasta llevarlos a niveles pre-recesión. Apoyar máxima flexibilidad en el uso de los fondos asignados. Incrementar fondos para iniciativas de Seguridad Escolar. Cantidad de Estudiantes por clase: modificar la evaluación y penalidades asociadas al no cumplimiento en base a valor promedio, como sucede con las escuelas chárter. Matrícula Doble: Permitir a los distritos educativos establecer contratos de provisión local con las instituciones de educación superior para el servicio de Dual Enrollment. Financiamiento Capital: proveer fondos completos para programas de construcción y mantenimiento de escuelas públicas. Evaluación: Asegurar que los mecanismos de evaluación son válidos, confiables y alineados con los estándares de todo el estado. Capacitación de los Padres: oposición a cambios que reduzcan la participación de los padres, maestros y miembros comunitarios en la conversión de escuelas públicas tradicionales a chárter. Apoyar la existencia de los Concejos Consultivos Escolares. Escuelas Chárter: mejorar la salvaguarda y transparencia de la inversión de los contribuyentes entre las escuelas públicas tradicionales y las chárter, incluyendo la transferencia de fondos junto con el estudiante, cuando este se transfiera desde escuelas chárter a escuela pública tradicional durante el año escolar. Actualmente los fondos se quedan en la escuela chárter aunque el estudiante se encuentre en otro plantel. La participación de los padres en estos talleres les permitirá tomar decisiones informadas y solicitar de las autoridades responsables las acciones oportunas para garantizar la calidad del derecho a la Educación publica. Es muy importante que si no pudo asistir antes, no se pierda la última oportunidad de recibir este adiestramiento el próximo 20 de Febrero a las 6:30 pm en la Escuela Bob Graham, ubicada en el 15901 NW 79 Avenida en Miami Lakes. A happy relationship is the best gift parents can give to their children. Potential parents should also know about goals and values, family planning, health and nutrition, and medical care among other resources. Adults need a different kind of education as they become expectant parents. They need to know about: -Prenatal health -Development of fetus -Labor and delivery -Selecting the physicians that will be in charge of managing the health of the expectant mother

and the baby -Infant care techniques -Child development fundamentals -How to manage challenging behaviors -Socio-emotional development of children -Where to ask for help Today we can find reliable resources that people can have access to and use the information to be the best parents they can be. There are many books, trainings, and web sites that can provide good advice to help ease the difficult task of parenthood; to make it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for the individuals involved. Some schools and community centers offer parenting trainings at no cost to the parents. The help of qualified professionals will give support in challenging stages of development so that parents are able to understand what children at young age are like; as well as their needs, patterns of behavior, and their physical and social development. Parenting trainings will also offer the opportunity to share parental concerns with other adults who are living the same experiences. By networking together parents may find answers to their questions and doubts. Parenting education should begin when you decide to conceive a child, and every child should have a place in society where love, care and an environment conducive to learning and growth are guaranteed. Parenthood is based in relationships of trust and respect. Understanding and getting to

know your child deeply will help set the foundations of your child’s future adult life. The two most important things you can do for your children are: 1- Love your child, I believe we all love our children dearly, but they need to know it. Spend quality time with your child, set a time without interruption to play with him/her, share a special moment like reading a book, cooking a special dish to share with the family, play a game that you both like. 2-Listen, pay attention to what they need and to what is important to them. Conversation is one of the best ways to spend quality time with your child; it is a way to get to know them better and to connect with what is interesting to them. And remember, our children will eventually leave our side and they need to be prepared for life, we are the most important educator in their lives and it is our responsibility to do it the best we can. The Joy of Learning offers a modern approach to education, where children develop free thinking, creativity and self-confidence. It is wonderful to see children explore with nature and pick their own strawberries. The Director Soraya Fernandez takes great joy in seeing the achievements each child accomplishes.

As an adjunct professor and alumni of Miami Dade College, I had the pleasure of seeing true advocacy at work. The fall class of EEC 2271, took on a special project and presented to the community, students, families and to the Dean of Students Georgette Perez and EEC chair Iris Strachan. The project “ EEC Teacher s in Action” , is to provide hands on learning experiences and create a learning environment that encourages Early Childhood Teacher’s appropriate practices that will have a strong impact on the Early Childhood Community. Early Childhood Educators are asking for a learning classroom that entices learning practices for Early Childhood, just like science has science labs to practice, we want a classroom that has areas to practice circle time activities, flat table top desks to practice different arts and crafts that we can use in the early childhood classroom. The class took great pride in dressing formally and making a presentation as each one voiced proudly. Dr. Eileen Fluney expressed great enthusiasm and deepest appreciation to MDC north campus for it’s support to provide the highest quality education to our future leaders. Iris Strachan and Georgette Perez, gave the students a standing ovation.

As one student stated: “We will shine within our community and be nothing but the best”, “Because I am MDC!”

A: Although mealtimes are meant to be a relaxing family time, it often can be the exact opposite when young children or picky eaters are involved. The first step is to remain calm without allowing the frustration of any negative behavior to misguide tour parenting. With some self reflection, reevaluate your own eating habits while remembering that your are an ongoing role model for your child(ren). Next, identify your baseline to build from by listing your child’s dietary preferences. Collaborate slight variations of these specific foods before introducing new foods. Focus attention on not that they do not like a food, but that they have not found the way in which they prefer it to be prepared. Some children have texture sensitivities therefore simply changing the cooking methods can make the difference. Presentation of the food can also play a factor for some overly observant future foodies. Be sure to take care in the presentation and make mealtime a special relaxed time. Introducing foods one at a time is the best approach in order to avoid the child be overwhelmed by too many choices and the unnecessary stress that may result from the pressure to try numerous new things simultaneously. Encourage your child to become active in the shopping for groceries and the food preparation process. By doing this, your child will feel like an active participant in this journey of food exploration rather than a prisoner of pressure. Remember: Food is fuel for the body, so it can only work with what we put in it! Start your healthy habits today!

¡El Amor, después del Amor!

l actor argentino Miguel Varoni y su esposa, la actriz de origen colombiano, Catherine Siachoque, comparten desde hace 18 años el mismo aire, el mismo espacio, la misma pasión y la vida misma. “Eternamente enamorados”, así se autodefinen y da placer entrevistar a dos grandes figuras de la actuación internacional que han logrado traspasar las fronteras continentales con cada uno de sus trabajos pero lo mas importante aún, que han logrado permanecer con la misma humildad que los vio nacer, crecer, lograr el éxito y por sobre todo permanecer allí. El amor a primera vista les tocó el corazón el 5 de noviembre de 1996 y hasta con cierta incredulidad, se enredaron en las llamas de la pasión. Contra viento y marea, decidieron desde el primer momento dar a conocer su amor, sin condiciones, sin preámbulos sociales, sin nada a cambio y funcionó. Tal es así que llevan 18 años de casados y dieron el sí ante el altar, gracias a un inseparable amigo que los vio crecer en el amor. El escritor bogotano Mauricio Navas fue quién le dio la llave, para hacer aún mas feliz de lo que ya era, a la mujer de sus sueños: Cathy. Mauricio fue quién con ternura paternal, miró a los ojos a Varoni y le dijo: “por que no te casas? Por que no le das el regalo que tanto ella espera? Y así fue como el 4 de Julio de 1999, Miguel Varoni y Catherine Siachoque dieron el sí frente al altar. Desde allí, sus vidas se iluminaron cada vez más. Hoy nos comparten en CLARAmente hablando, como es “Vivir el amor, después del amor”.

“Fue algo muy rápido, mucha atracción, mucho amor, que hoy en día perdura y seguimos alimentando. Fue algo que tenía que pasar, ya estaba escrito en nuestros destinos”, asegura Varoni.

¿Cómo hace una pareja para ser exitosa y compartir la misma profesión?

Miguel toma la palabra, y Cathy sonríe. Lo deja hablar mientras lo llena de mimos y besos. “En el caso nuestro la ficción, la telenovela, nuestro trabajo en sí, no influye para nada en nuestras vidas como pareja, al contrario yo siento muchísima admiración por el trabajo actoral de Cathy”, nos comenta Miguel que se muestra feliz, amado con cada una de las letras, con cada una de las miradas y caricias que su mujer le propicia.. “De verdad para nada, por que en el caso nuestro, nunca hemos sido pareja en las telenovelas, solamente el año pasado cuando grabamos “La casa de al lado” ahí ella era mi amante, pero siempre hicimos trabajos individuales y nunca tuvo nada que ver nuestra historia de amor en una telenovela en la que hayamos actuado”. A lo que Cathy nos aclara, que la historia de amor de ellos, no es una historia sacada de una telenovela es una historia de verdad, es su historia de amor.

¿Cómo se conocieron?

“Fue un amor a primera vista, fue rápido y muy lindo. Nosotros nos conocimos en un avión, ella estaba haciendo una novela que se llamaba “Las Juanas” y yo entraba en el capitulo 20 aproximadamente”, cuenta Varoni. “Cuando la vi en el avión, me impacto y ahí empezó el coqueteo y al mes nos fuimos a vivir juntos en contra de toda la familia de Cathy, ya que son muy religiosos y no aprobaban nuestra unión libre. A los dos años y medio nos casamos por la iglesia aunque no lo necesitábamos, pero la quería ver feliz”. Cathy agrega: “Incluso el cura que nos casó, al llenar los requisitos vimos que había que hacer el curso pre-matrimonial y justo estábamos con mucho trabajo, el se sonrió y nos dijo “pero si ustedes llevan haciendo el curso desde hace dos años y medio, no lo necesitan”.

Los dos contestan: “La vida”. “Toda la gente piensa que nuestra vida es diferente. Y yo les digo que nuestra vida es normal y es perfecta para nosotros. Estamos en la casa juntos, miramos televisión juntos, estamos con los perros que amamos y criamos, nos divertimos juntos, vemos cine. Además, a medida que nuestra relación va avanzando en el tiempo, la gran respuesta que hemos tenido es que lo mejor que nos puede pasar es esta juntos. Por que realmente siempre tuvimos la posibilidad de estar separados en fiestas, en reuniones, en trabajos con amistades diferentes y al final cuentas siempre lo mas lindo de la relación es cuando el balance llega a su fin y uno dice “realmente con la mejor persona que la paso es con ella”, nos dice el esposo enamorado.

Miguel comenta: “La verdad, déjame decirte que no tengo ni idea, no se como hicimos para perdurar tanto en el amor”. Cathy responde: “Mis amigos incluso, me han sugerido en “dar unas charlas” a matrimonios que llevan pocos años de casados. Sin ir mas lejos mi compañera de trabajo Danna García me comentó “porque no escribía un libro para alentar a las parejas en perdurar en el amor. Por que realmente considero que sí es un “fenómeno” lo nuestro ya que como hace uno para actuar, cocinar, tener felíz al marido, estar enamorada, etc”. Miguel agrega: “Ahora que estoy escuchando a Cathy, creo que lo nuestro se podría describir como un amor por capítulos. Por ejemplo, yo tengo un capítulo con ella que es el de la admiración y es como la miro, yo a ella como actriz. La admiro como mujer, como hija, como hermana, como amiga, como esposa, como amante y eso, me enamora”… “El otro capítulo, es la forma de ser de ella. Hay algo que me une a ella que son los momentos de crisis; al final de cuentas es en esos momentos en donde se miden las parejas. Y Cathy es una piedra maravillosa para mí, que me angustio mucho y ella es una base sólida en la relación. Entonces eso hace de que funcione todo muy bien, no encontraría mi vida, sin ella”.

¿Qué opinan del amor después del amor?

“Lo que pasa es que como todo, es por capítulos. Como nosotros no hemos tenido hijos, hace que nuestra pareja sea diferente a cualquier otra”.

Se dice que una pareja se consolida con la llegada de los hijos, ¿para ustedes esto no fue asi? “En nuestra vida no es así, al contrario incluso “hemos visto, parejas de amigos que con la llegada de los hijos se “des-consolidaron”, dice Catherine.

Miguel agrega “lo que pasa es que en nuestro caso, nosotros decidimos vivir nuestra vida, amar al otro y no perder el enamoramiento. El amor, es el producto de las vivencias, del día a día, de reir y llorar juntos, de vivir mil cosas juntos, y eso es lo que va consolidando el amor. Hay gente que se dedica a cuidar el amor y deja a un lado el enamoramiento, entonces es como que se apaga esa cosita rica de besarse y mimarse. Es tan bonito, es tan lindo vivir eso día a día”.

Todas las parejas siempre discuten por algo.¿Por qué discuten ustedes?

“Nosotros discutimos por cosas sin importancia, insignificantes, por si el partido de fútbol que estamos viendo, quien va ganando o perdiendo, esas son nuestras peleas que también las disfrutamos por que son parte de nuestras vidas. Ademas Cathy tiene un carácter muy especial donde terminamos siempre riéndonos de nosotros mismos”.

¿Quién tiene la última palabra?

“Los dos y ninguno, siempre el que tenga la razón”.

Se acompañaron siempre en las buenas y en las malas, ¿cuál fue la peor experiencia que tuvieron que pasar?

“Definitivamente el año 2010 fue muy duro para nosotros, con la muerte de mi mamá no la pase bien y Cathy fue la piedra fundamental que estuvo siempre a mi lado para superar ese mal momento”, nos cuenta Varoni. Los arrumacos no paran, las miradas cómplices desbordan, los besos tiernos y la admiración mutua brota por los poros, así de simple se enamoran ante el mundo; así de simple viven una vida surreal con bases sólidas y terrenales; así de simple viven el amor después del amor… eternamente enamorados como el primer día en que se conocieron y se dieron el sí, para toda la vida.

ola a todos! Espero que estén súper bien en este mes del “amor y la amistad y muchos chocolates (que esperemos que sean oscuros y 100% cacao antioxidante.” En esta edición, les voy a hablar de las bases fundamentales de la nutrición integral. Una vez que puedan tener entendimiento de esto, podrán lograr su objetivo relacionado con la salud, ya sea bajar de peso, curar enfermedades o mejorar sus vidas. Recuerden que el conocimiento y entendimiento, puesto en práctica es PODER. Quieres ser poderoso, y ser el súper héroe de tu vida? Yo sí, y espero que tu también. Ahora para que este funcione hay que tener mucha paciencia, perseverancia y amor propio. Como ya saben, yo soy su Asesora Nutricional, Health Coach (nutricionista con un toque de apoyo emocional) de Doral Family Journal; y es por eso que en este articulo verán otro lado más allá de lo que se trata la nutrición integral. ¿Sabías, que la comida tiene que ver mucho con las emociones? Nosotros comemos de acuerdo a como nos sentimos, nuestras memorias y crianza basadas alrededor de nuestra cultura. Ahora, que entienden eso, hay dos clases de alimentos: “La comida Primaria y la Comida Secundaria”. La comida primaria es todo nuestro estilo de vida en general, donde se encuentran: nuestras relaciones, carrera/profesión, actividad física, y práctica espiritual . Encontrar el balance en la comida primaria es fundamental para lograr una salud integral ¿y porque es tan importante el balance en la comida primaria? Ya les explico. Nuestras emociones influyen en nuestro cuerpo. Cuando estamos felices nuestras células están en armonía, no producimos ese cortisol tóxico que sale cuando entramos en miedo, estrés o tristes, que intoxica nuestro cuerpo, también baja nuestra energía, vitalidad, y tu sistema inmune. Es por eso, que trabajar en la comida primaria es crucial para tener un cuerpo sano y feliz. Suena sencillo decirlo, pero no

dije que era fácil. Ya que para cada uno (debido a su punto de vista), los problemas de sus vidas, son más importantes y más grandes que los del vecino. La idea se trata de que logremos identificar en cual de las áreas de la comida primaria hay que trabajar para entonces poder lograr un balance emocional; a la vez que nos nutrimos adecuadamente con la comida secundaria. La comida secundaria son los alimentos que comemos (frutas, vegétales, carnes, granos, almidones y el agua, que bebemos). Aprender a nutrir nuestro cuerpo con los alimentos que van en acorde con él, lo vitalizan y lo regeneran es nuestra labor. Como todo, cambiar para mejorar requiere paciencia y dedicación, que a la larga si son constantes, serán gratificados con éxito en sus vidas. El éxito no es solo alcanzar la carrera de tus sueños o tener un millones en tu cuenta bancaria. Éxito es encontrar serenidad, confianza, fe, y amor en tu vida, que por añadidura, te llevaran a lograr esa salud y prosperidad que tanto deseas. Cuando hay calma y orden, las ideas fluyen con facilidad, podemos relacionarnos y trabajar mejor, el cuerpo cumple correctamente con sus funciones, no hay ansiedad, nuestra energía esta en armonía y atrae hacia nosotros gente relacionada con lo que queremos, (amistades, amores, objetivos, metas profesionales) sin ninguna obstrucción. Ahora, ven como la comida primaria junto a la comida secundaria trabajan de la mano. Sin uno el otro no funciona. No puedes tratar de comer súper sano, orgánico, bajo en grasas saturadas y a la vez, tener una vida muy estresada, sin descanso y peleas constantes y para acabarla, con un trabajo que no te gusta. Aunque estés cumpliendo tu labor en la comida secundaria (los alimentos que consumes), la carencia en tu comida primaria (tu estilo de vida), terminara saboteando todo trabajo anterior, ya que las emociones (el como nos sentimos) influyen nuestra salud mental y corporal. Toda esa tristeza, estrés, coraje, cansancio, o pensamientos negativos, terminara bajando tu sis-

tema inmune. Lo peor de todo es que al sentirse tan decaído e infeliz (mentalmente), influyes a tu cuerpo a enfermarse (físicamente). Ya que para recompensar como te sientes (en ese caso triste) tu cuerpo tratara de enfermarse para balancear el sentimiento que este sintiendo. Nuestros sentimientos y pensamientos influyen 100% nuestra salud. Toma acción, cambia tu vida hacia mejor. Si tienes pocos amigos, sal a socializar, para distraerte de tu vida laboral, as ejercicio más seguido, sal a correr. Pon en YouTube una clase de ejercicio o baile y hazla desde tu casa. Cambia de trabajo si no estás feliz en el que estas ahora. Quieres tener otra profesión, encuentra maneras de lograrlo. Ojo, no digo que dejes tu trabajo, sino, que formules un plan que te ayude a lograrlo de una manera racional y estructurada. Quizá te tome más tiempo, pero valdrá la pena. No hay límite de tiempo ni edad para mejorar nuestra calidad de vida y sacas nuestro potencial. Hay que pensar en grande, ya no son los tiempos de antes. Año nuevo = Vida nueva. Cuando vayas a injerir un alimento, pregúntate si te vas a sentir bien después de comerlo. Cuando comas trata de no ver T.V. y enfócate en lo que estas comiendo. Pon música calmada o comparte tu comida con alguna amistad o ser querido. Agradece por lo que tienes, recuerda que el cuerpo oye todo y siente todo. Esta manera le avisa HELLO!! Voy a comer, prepara tus jugos gástricos y enzimas digestivas que aquí va mi tilapia con vegetales. Hidrátate seguido, toma mucha agua y te verde. Come porciones pequeñas, para que tu cuerpo pueda tener una digestión armónica y para prevenir que tu estomago se expanda en tamaño. Toma tus suplementos para ayudarte hablo de una buena multivitamina con vitamina D, una omega-3 (1,500 mg dos veces por día), unos probióticos (alrededor de 25 billones), un antioxidante (como la vitamina C, CQ-10, Resveratrol). Si haces ejercicio puedes agregar unos aminoácidos como la L-glutamina, y BCAA. Extras: Maca, colágeno, pollen de abeja o royal jelly, aceite de coco exra virgen, Noni, entre otros. Recuerden que lo que sientes es tu opción. Puedes cambiar tus pensamientos, tus sentimientos, tu alimentación y tener la vida que te mereces, AHORA!!!

ebrero es el mes dedicado a crear conciencia sobre la importancia del cuidado de la salud del corazón y la importancia de llevar un estilo de vida saludable debido a que las enfermedades cardiovasculares son la principal causa de muerte en Estados Unidos. Cada 34 segundos, una persona fallece de un ataque al corazón; cada minuto, una persona fallece de una enfermedad relacionada con el corazón. Las enfermedades cardiovasculares se refieren a enfermedades del corazón y vasos sanguíneos. Las más comunes son: enfermedad coronaria (incluye el ataque al corazón y dolor en el pecho), ataque cerebro vascular, hipertensión arterial y fallo cardíaco. Según los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades, nueve de cada diez pacientes con enfermedades del corazón tienen al menos uno de estos factores de riesgo que puede controlar: Colesterol, Hipertensión Arterial, Diabetes, Fumar Cigarrillos, Sobrepeso u Obesidad, Deficiente en la Dieta e Inactividad Física. Afortunadamente, si usted lleva una alimentación saludable, mantiene un peso saludable, hace ejercicio con regularidad, vigila la presión arterial y el nivel de colesterol, no fuma y limita el consumo de alcohol, puede prevenir las enfermedades del corazón.

Un éxito la Jornada Gratuita de ciudadanía en Doral

La jornada de ciudadanía gratuita realizada el pasado 25 de enero en el Arepazo Original, fue un éxito!! Decenas de personas con residencia permanente acudieron al lugar para informarse sobre el proceso para convertirse en ciudadanos americanos. Las oficinas congresionales de Mario Díaz-Balart e Ileana Ros-Lehtinen estuvieron presentes para dar asesoría al igual que la abogada de inmigración, Stephanie Green ofreció sus servicios asesorando durante toda la jornada que aunque se había pautado hasta las 3pm, terminó a las 6pm por la cantidad de asistentes. Actualmente, la liga cuenta con más de 350 participantes inscritos en 5 divisiones: Tee-Ball: 5-7 años, Coach Pitch: 6-9 años, Menores: 8-11 años, Majors: 1012 años, Juniors: 13-14 años. “Uno de los beneficios de la liga es que es asequible para cualquier familia. Por el precio de inscripción tienen los uniformes, la práctica, el torneo y, por supuesto, esto incluye el trofeo principal al final de la temporada,” dijo José Santiago. ace 11 años, en el primer día de apertura, Billy “The Marlin” hizo su entrada triunfal en la temporada inaugural de Doral Little League (DLL). Sólo unos pocos meses antes, no había liga, ni campo donde jugar, no había equipos. Doral Little League era sólo un sueño. Pero tal como explicaba Robert Van Name, el primer presidente de DLL, en un artículo publicado por este medio, “Los tryouts estaban previstos para el primer sábado de Diciembre de 2002. Más de 210 niños se registraron para jugar en la temporada inaugural, que tuvo 14 equipos de 15 jugadores por cada equipo. Y la Liga creció a 24 equipos con 340 jugadores registrados en nuestro segundo año!.” Varios años de éxito siguieron a esa temporada inaugural. “El año pasado (2013), Doral Little League se convirtió en la campeona del distrito en la división de 10 – 12 años y en 2009-2010 los integrantes de Liga fueron campeones en todas las divisiones, dijo con orgullo, José Santiago, recientemente electo Presidente de la Liga. “ En DLL tenemos una política de puertas abiertas. ack in December 2012 and following the Olympic Games, the International Judo Federation introduced a new set of rules for the sport of Judo. Following the release of the document many seminars were held around the world to explain the new rules. This time, USA Judo had the privileged of hosting the second IJF Refereeing and Coaching Seminar of 2014 which brought together about 118 participants from 35 countries to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The first Seminar of the year was hosted in Malaga, Spain. Top Leadership from the International Judo Federation including Marius Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation; Vladimir Barta, IJF Head Sports Director; Alejandro Blanco, IJF Olympic Solidarity Director and President of the Spanish Olympic Committee; and Juan Carlos Barcos, IJF Head Refereeing Director were present at the event. Jose Humberto Rodriguez, USA Judo CEO and newly appointed IJF Development Director was also in attendance to welcome the attendees.

“As the hosts, we were able to send an unprecedented number of US coaches and referees to attend and participate in the seminar. Hearing first-hand the latest rule changes and interpretations directly from the experts from the International Judo Federation (IJF) was an invaluable experience for the attendees. For many, this was their first opportunity to attend this annual event,” said Robert Fukuda, Chairman of USA Judo Referee Commission. Jhonny Prado, Head Coach of Ki-Itsu-Sai, USA Judo’s National Training Site, emphasized the importance of having this seminars in U.S. Soil not only in order to better understand the implementation of the new rules but also because it provides a platform, an opportunity to improve the communication between coaches and referees. Following the two days seminar and after having exchanged many emails, U.S. referees and coaches produced a document approved by USA Judo and the Referees in which the changes and the implementation of the new rules were detailed. The purpose of the document was to serve as the main

document for future seminars which to be hosted here in the United States. “Having a large number of US referees in attendance will make it much easier to diseminate the information nationally. This creates a greater level of consistent application and adherence to the IJF standard by our referees. In turn, this better prepares our coaches and athletes to compete internationally. Ultimately, it aids in our pursuit of more success and greater medal production for USA Judo”, said Robert Fukuda, Chairman of USA Judo Referee Commission. “Hosting the seminar here in Fort Lauderdale was a tremendous opportunity for Pan America and USA Judo. USA Judo continues to display our efforts to host worldclass events and also showcase South Florida as a convenient and enjoyable destination”, he added. n Diciembre 2012 y luego de los Juegos Olímpicos, la Federación Internacional de Judo introdujo un nuevo grupo de reglas. Tras la publicación del documento, se realizaron varios seminarios en todo el mundo para explicar la nueva normativa. Esta vez, USA Judo tuvo el privilegio de ser el anfitrión del segundo Seminario de Arbitraje para coaches y referees del 2014 , el cual reunió a unos 118 participantes de 35 países en Fort Lauderdale, Florida. El primer seminario del año se celebró en Málaga, España. Líderes y directivos de la Federación Internacional de Judo incluyendo Mr. Marius Vizer, presidente de la FIJ (Federación Internacional de Judo), Vladimir Barta, Director de Deportes en Jefe de la FIJ; Alejandro Blanco, director de Solidaridad Olímpica de la FIJ y presidente del Comité Olímpico Español , y Juan Carlos Barcos , Jefe Director de Arbitraje de la FIJ estuvieron presentes en el evento. José Humberto Rodríguez, USA Judo CEO y recientemente nombrado Director de Desarrollo de Judo de la Federacion Internacional también estuvo presente para dar la bienvenida a los asistentes. “Como anfitriones, pudimos enviar un número sin

precedentes de entrenadores y árbitros de los Estados Unidos para asistir y participar en el seminario. Escuchar de primera mano los últimos cambios de reglas e interpretaciones directamente de los expertos de la Federación Internacional de Judo ( FIJ ) fue una experiencia invaluable para los asistentes. Para muchos, esta fue su primera oportunidad de asistir a este evento annual,” dijo Robert Fukuda, presidente de la Comisión de Arbitraje de USA Judo. Jhonny Prado quien es entrenador en Jefe de KiItsu -Sai, Centro de Entrenamiento Nacional de USA Judo, hizo hincapié en la importancia de contar con este seminarios en los Estados Unidos, no solo con el fin de entender mejor la aplicación de las nuevas normas , sino también porque proporciona una plataforma , un oportunidad para mejorar la comunicación entre los entrenadores y árbitros. Tras el seminario de dos días y después de haber intercambiado muchos correos electrónicos, losárbitros y entrenadores de Estados Unidos finalizaron un documento aprobado por USA Judo y los referees en el cual se detallaron los nuevos cambios y la aplicación de las nuevas reglas. El propósito del documento es servir como documento principal para futuros seminarios que seran realizados

aquí en los Estados Unidos a nivel nacional. “Haber tenido un gran número de árbitros estadounidenses que asistieronhará que sea mucho más fácil diseminar la información a nivel nacional. Esto crea un mayor nivel de aplicación y cumplimiento de las normas de la FIJ por parte nuestros árbitros. A su vez, esto prepara mejor a nuestros entrenadores y atletas para competir a nivel internacional . En última instancia , ayuda en nuestra búsqueda de más éxito y mayor producción de medallas para USA Judo”, dijo Robert Fukuda, presidente de la Comisión de Arbitraje de USA Judo . “Ser la sede del seminario aquí en Fort Lauderdale fue una gran oportunidad para PanAmerica y USA Judo. New Year, More Victories for Our Military Community By Jose “Pepe” Diaz Miami-Dade County Commissioner, District 12, Miami-Dade County Military Liaison and Chairman of the Military Affairs Board

Riding on the wings of a successful Veterans Day Parade at the end of last year, and on the joy of joining forces with so many veteran and military organizations, community leaders, elected officials and municipalities; we face this year with great expectation of what can and what will be accomplished. The 24 Board members and I as Chairman have already met to plan this year’s focus and strategy. Challenges like unemployment and homelessness, as well as physical, emotional and mental issues are affecting our military personnel as well veterans; and it is affecting women at a higher rate than their male counterparts. The Military Affairs Board is committed to utilize our effort and collective resources to help women in the military; to help

eradicate homelessness among veterans; to help lower the unemployment among veterans; to help the children of military families; to help preserve the history of our military community and to take advantage of any opportunity to fulfill our core mission. We are set out to accomplish this through events, community outreach, education and the creation of issue-specific programs. The statistics related to our military and their families speak volumes in terms of how much we need to do for them as a community. Within our community there are several organization working in favor of our military and their families. The main goal of the MAB this year is to create a platform of collaboration among all agencies and organizations, as well as the community at large, in order to better serve the present needs and to develop beneficial opportunities for our military and its personnel. We are looking to 2014 as yet another opportunity to fulfill our individual resolutions in favor of our service men and women, as we pursue our collective goals; while multiplying our resources and efforts within the Board. We are resolute in benefiting our military community and we exhort every member of community to join in this resolution. Our service men and women serve us all therefore I encourage us all to find ways to serve them in return. This month of February will be the third year we roll out an initiative in District 12 of Miami-Dade County called “14 Days of Neighborly Love” an opportunity to perform random acts of kindness for your neighbors and your neighborhoods during a span of 14 days, from February 14th to the 27th. Last year we saw a community come together to serve one another simply to do good. We were able to give discounted gas during the opening and the closing of the two week span. We saw youth washing cars for free and elderly receiving inspirational books from an internationally known publisher. Members of our community received free or discounted services from local businesses and we handed out 1000 Sunpasses. Among these and many other

acts of kindness, we are planning to serve our veterans by holding a service day on February 22nd in conjunction with the organization Rebuilding Together. You too could join in and do good for those who serve our country and their families, as well as any other member of our community. ith a new year, always comes new hope of goals that can be attained and resolutions that will materialize. As part of this New Year, the Military Affairs Board is reminded of the words of Sun Tzu in order to fulfill the Board’s mission: “So the important thing in a military operation is victory, not persistence.” Miami-Dade County’s Military Affairs Board (MAB) was created a little over a year ago with a clear mission to promote, attract and solicit military activities in Miami-Dade County, as well as advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance. The idea is that everything that relates to the past and present service men and women would converge through the MAB and then into the hands of the specific agencies that can find solutions and create opportunities.
