Prevention: The First Step to Prevent Drug Addiction By Grecia Romero
H
ow to prevent drug use? That’s the question that many residents have after knowing the recent news of substances use by young people in our City of Doral. When cases like these comes out public, it is important to analyze the way the community is meeting the needs of our youth people, what resources are available to educate them on prevention and how to be alert to factors that may increase the risk and induce the use drugs. According to studies done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2012 only, about 22.5 million young people aged 12 to 19 years (equivalent to 7% of the total population) initiated drug use in the United States. If we use this data and analyze effects considering the population of this city (46,000 inhabitants according to statistics published on the website of the City of Doral), and apply this percentage 7% to the same age group, it would be the same as 3,220 young people that might be at risk. Undoubtedly, these figures should move community to action. This not a new theory and it is more relevant than ever to emphasize the important role of parents, school and social environment as the three major factors of influence on children and youth in the sensitive period of adolescence where they initiate most of these experiences. Let’s analyze each one of these factors.
Role of Parents
June/Junio 23, 2013

In every way, parents are the primary educators and guides, and therefore the most critical in preventing children getting involved with drugs, alcohol or other substances. Despite the urgency of the times, some parents (by fear or ignorance) delegate this role to school educators or authorities so that they are the “experts” to train their children about the dangers in our society. “With great regret I must say that there is still much ignorance among us parents even though there are so many online resources, literature and media in general,” says a mother from this city whose son died from the effects of drugs. “Instead of spending so much time on social networks, we should educate ourselves and get involved in the lives of our children without taboos or fears”, she adds. Therefore parents should take the first step and consider the following aspects:
6
• Setting the right example by taking care the way they live and the message transmitted by their acts: The way parents react speak louder than words. “If your child notices the father often seeks to release tension and move to a more relaxed state with an ‘innocent glass of liquor’ is sending a confusing message”, adds the mother mentioned above. • Evaluate and help how their children can apply in their daily lives the values that go against drug use: personal effort, self-control, perseverance, self-will, responsibility, spiritual values, appreciation for life, etc. • Comprehensive and honest communication: it is a fundamental aspect to relieve family stress and social isolation. A child feeling alone, depressed, anxious or going through an emotional crisis could
need support and counseling or removing students who promote or encourage illicit conducts that could pose a threat to other youth from the student’s community.
Social Environment
try to find refuge in drugs. Good communication also reveals important information about friends and the environment around children, helping parents to identify dangerous situations easily. It also create a positive environment that help youth to be more responsive to the views of parents and encourages them to share and report any concern about their peers’ behavior. • Be involved and interested in the lives of children so parents are able to identify any sudden change in behavior, friendships, interests, habits, etc. • Start talking with children about drugs early in their life: It is important to talk about both legal (alcohol, tobacco or medicine) and illegal and its effects. Give them the opportunity to participate in discussions and prepare them to react in dangerous situations. • Be alert if there have been previously cases of drug abuse in a sibling or a relative less close as a cousin. They can be a model and encourage other children also getting caught by imitating or by direct induction to the drug. Studies have demonstrated that the first approach to drugs commonly comes from a known person.
Role of Schools
Schools play a very important role protecting and training in the prevention of drug use and abuse of other substances, offering programs that train children and youth to detect dangerous situations, teaching them how to react and look for help. Schools should also ensure safe environments with low rates of illegal activities. In a joined effort, Doral Police Department, Miami Dade School Officers and Doral Schools offer multiple prevention tools to help our community to be safe. More than 1,000 students from 5th grade yearly complete the training program known as D.A.R.E. “Drug Abuse Resistance Education” in which police officers teach specific lessons about drugs and tobacco. Schools also guarantee constant police presence during the school year in all schools of Doral and offer educational talks for parents and high school students. Any cases of drugs found are handled as determined by Florida law, providing assistance to students and families who
Our children cannot live in a bubble, sooner or later they will have to make a decision on their own, and they must know how to use the freedom of decision making in the correct way. This should not mean they will learn by trial and error what is best for their safety and for their future; truly many social factors in their environment will favor the use of drugs, their friends, the public place they frequent or private parties they attend to where drug consumption is the norm. It is critical reminding parents that they most have control in educating children about these risks. Here are some tips for you to follow: • Ensure that environment your children frequents is a safe one. This involves making the choice of schools, activities they do, places to spend a vacation or weekend, etc. • Expose your children to positive hobbies that allow them to make good use of leisure time: sports, religious activities, language learning, and cultural programs. In these kind of environments youth can make new friends less prone to drug use. • Train the youth on ways to recognize risky situations in which they could be exposed to drug consumption. Avoid any free gifts, or samples to try from known or unknown people and report them to parents or authorities. • Pay attention to the type of music, TV shows, internet searches and celebrities your child likes to follow. According to the “Drug Testing Network”, a private company recognized for promoting drug free workplaces, these factors can influence youth behavior while looking to be accepted by others they could try to modify their conduct making them more vulnerable or exposed to start using drugs. • Teach youth how to deal with peer pressure, how to seek for help when needed and the right place to get help, primary their parents or guardians. For this to happen a solid line of communication is required, parents and guardians need to be available when needed. Family foes are unique likewise the prevention means of every case, the recommendations captured in this article try to call parents interest in this subject to deepen their knowledge on this matter to protect their children and provide them a safer environment.

Prevención: El Primer Paso Para Evitar la Drogadicción Por Grecia Romero
C

How Do I know if my Son or Daughter is Consuming Drugs? By Grecia Romero
A
young boy has started getting bad grades in school, he has started developing a constant bad mood rejecting his friends, not wanting to participate in sports as he regularly used to and now constantly argues for any minor reason at home. Lately he has started complaining of general body aching, his parents are confused and think the explanation is normal adolescence changes, perhaps he is a little depressed and couldn’t handle a crush in school, but their last thought would be thinking if drugs have anything to do with it… How could I know if my son/ daughter has started experimenting with drugs? What are the signs that I should look for? The first step to help anyone overcoming drug issues is identifying that there is indeed a problem. Many parents are surprised with the news of discovering a child involved on drugs, in many of those cases it is already too late. Subtle changes in conduct where taking place over time, however those were unnoticed by the parents, these are clear signs of alert in youth, which if discovered early in the game could have helped avoiding addiction or worse.
What are the Symptoms that Manifest in the Use of Drugs?
June/Junio 23, 2013
www. do ralf am iy jour nal. c om
Outside of the legally known substances like Alcohol and tobacco, a person under the influence of illegal drugs (stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, etc.) show clear biological and psychological changes which can be recognized by their parents:
10
Biological changes: These are external signs which vary depending on the type of drug consumed, nevertheless the most common signs of drug use are: • Loss of balance giving the impression of clumsiness or instability. • Eye irritation, retina redness and dilated pupils, causing a big intolerance to bright places. Those regular consumers of drugs will have the high tendency to use dark shaded sun glasses, not only to hide the evident eye irritation but also to protect from direct sunlight exposure. • Upset stomach with lack of appetite. More than frequent vomit and nausea, with sugar rush appetite, wanting to eat sweet rather than protein food. This tendency on the long affects the individual causing a significant loss of weight. • Drugs that affect the neurological system causes the individual to experience shortness of breath with cold sweats, with a rush sensation of hot and cold flashes. • Fatigue and insomnia with prolonged periods of isolation • In those individuals with heavy drug use and marked dependency prolonged period of time without consumption causes trembling, general body aching, muscle pains, cold flashes and alterations in blood pressure. In general more than one symptom at the time can occur. Psychological symptoms: These symptoms also can vary depending on the drug used, and specific individual psychological state associated during drug
consumption or abstinence. In general these are the most important: • Swift changes in demeanor. Users can go from euphoria that contrasts with the individual’s normal character. In other situations the individual shows evasive towards relatives in the household, especially parents. In other situations the individual shows rapid anger and unexpectedly aggressive without apparent reason. • Loss of fear and complete disregard to self-safety, this normally occurs during the use of hallucinogens. • Loss of track of time and confusion. • High irritability, lack of interest in once upon a time normal activities, like sports. Development of selfish attitudes, isolation and laziness. • If there is an advance drug dependency the symptoms during periods of abstinence vary depending on every case, the most common are: lack of sleep, anxiety, irritability, lack of attention, lack of concentration. Behavioral symptoms: Changes in pattern and behavior could be an indication to suspect the use of drugs: • An outgoing person rather recently prefers to isolate, spending long hours on its own could be a sign of a side effect of depression caused by drug use. • Changes in Schedule, getting back home at late hours, avoiding communication with parents and immediately looking for isolation in his room with excuses of having to do homework or being tired. • Sudden need to ask for more than usual money allowance, parents could start to notice disappearance of money from their purses or wallets. Normally those under regular consumption of drugs try to get any money they can fast and easy to pay for their consumption, even selling their own property to cope with it. • Total indisposition to visit a doctor for fear of being exposed to medical examination of any kind. • The most evident and clear sign of drug use is finding at home items hidden items typically used for drug consumption; like little paper roles used for sniffing, empty cigarette boxes, pipes, ashes, needles, used syringes and spoons used to heat certain drugs for consumption. • Body marks of syringes and needles in the forearm • If you have solid suspicion of drug consumption by your youth, you can get in many pharmacies an over the counter kit for drug test which can confirm if that is the case or not.
Other Considerations for Parents
The influence of class mates, friends, and even relatives can be a transcendent effect on a young person to decide trying drugs, even considering to do “just a try”, thinking that there will be no consequences. For this reason parents and guardians need to be alert in many ways. It is a common mistake to think that children should have their own space and trust 100% in their own ability to make the right choices. In the State of Florida parents are deemed by Law to supervise the spaces of their children and it is prudent to do so. A random check on your child’s room as well as mobile devices is important and could throw significant leads on your youth’s whereabouts. This is not a disrespect of their privacy nor does it show lack of confidence but when parents understand that detecting early drug use can increase the chance of a young person to recover sooner than later, then they can be convinced that constant supervision is necessary and valuable. For all these reasons parents should not confuse respecting your child’s space with supervision, and freedom with dependency. Youth are at the early stages of learning how to use their freedom, we cannot pretend that they are entirely self-sufficient, therefore they should expect their parents to still participate steering their lives in the right direction. What if I find that my child has manifested all these symptoms in this article? What do I do and how can I help him overcome this problem? That will be the theme of our next article.

¿Estará mi hijo en Drogas? ¿Cómo Puedo saberlo? Por Grecia Romero
U

How to Help my Child Become Drug Free?
T
If the situation has been an addiction to drugs or alcohol, recovery does not end with a drug free program for several months or a year. It is a lifelong process. For many young people remain in a support group is the key to staying drug free. Others discover that helping those living what they have experienced is a way to help themselves to heal, so they serve as mentors, give talks and offer volunteer work in different programs.
he chronic disease of drug addiction has been present in many homes more frequently than ever before. Despite the initial shock that this news may cause in parents and how difficult it can be to address this issue, it is important to take immediate action in order to stop the consumption and minimize the consequences of drug use in the lives of young people. But where do I start? What do I do if I find out that my child is using drugs?

Attitude of Parents
Although it seems too obvious, the first thing to do is to be calm and see clearly what is happening in order to look for the right help. Parents often are driven by anger, resentment, guilt, feeling of failure, fear of losing their reputation, not knowing what to do or say and they procrastinate taking the right actions. This delay can lead them into the wrong path perhaps ignoring the whole subject for a while. When a young people is involved in drug abuse, they need more than ever to feel they are loved and supported. They need to know they can rely on their parents, their family plays an important role in their recovery process. This support also allows the individual involved in drugs to be confident enough to make their own commitment to remedy the situation, and to keep open communication in order to get help. If you suspect that your child is taking drugs, it is preferable to treat the subject openly without recrimination or blame. It is a mistake to pretend that nothing happened avoiding talking about the subject. Keep in mind that drug addiction is considered a treatable disease, but like any other, the sooner you detect it and corrective measures, the sooner the youth involved can be helped and healed.

Searching for Help and Treatments
14
The type of actions and treatments your child needs will depend on the level of involvement that he or she has with drugs and whether the current stage on addiction is mild or severe. Anyhow, it is always advisable to seek professional assistance, most of the time, parents cannot determine the level of dependence their children have, and therefore it is important to start by calling the primary physician for a medical evaluation or a therapist for psychological evaluation. Schools also offer guided services that can provide specific support and referrals to treatment and programs available in your area. In the initial stages it is crucial to act fast and assertively applying measures that benefit the youth in their current situation. The point of view of a trained professional at the school can help you to better deal with the situation and obtain useful information to better address it in the future. Parents who have lived similar situations can be another valuable source of support. Sharing what’s happening can help you discover that you are not the only family facing this problem and you may get useful information to manage the feelings that are experienced in the process. Furthermore, sharing your experience also helps other families to be vigilant on prevention, or even saving other young people whose parents do not
even know they are taking drugs. Spiritual support also plays an important role. Spiritual practices or religion belief empower the individual getting the courage and strength needed to face the ups and downs of this situation. If the problem already has reached an acute state do not hesitate to seek help, support and guidance of programs designed for these cases. Even though drug use is a personal decision, to be free again without help is not an easy task. Sometimes parents or even the young are not fully aware of what is happening and when they recognize it, drug dependence is a serious illness. That’s why professional assistance is so useful at all times. A close look at the type of existing treatments can help you focus on finding the help you need: Drug Free Programs: The goals of these treatments are abstinence and change in lifestyle of the patient. It usually has three phases; detoxification (physical dependence is treated), rehabilitation (helping the youth to restructure life again, recovering family relationships, social interaction, etc.) and reintegration (adaptation back to the social environment). Harm Reduction Programs: the main objective of these programs is to improve the quality life of the consumer who has gone to the extreme. Because of the level of addiction, abstinence is not intended but instead a try to reduce damage from consumption as much as possible.
A Life with NO Drugs Again
If your child has used drugs just one time or even occasionally, achieving a new life without drugs is relatively easier compared to cases in which the individual has developed an addiction. Young people going through recovery should avoid situations that could pose a risk of falling again, on the other hand they can engage in activities that keep them productively active helping them to achieve their personal success. ¿Cómo Puedo Ayudar a mi Hijo a Superar las Drogas?
Por Grecia Romero
L

Contactos Adicionales y Referencias

adia Hand to Shoulder Center was founded in 2008 in Doral by Dr. Alejandro Badia to satisfy the needs of his international patients that come for elective service, and to provide specialized service for patients from the industrial area that have suffered traumatic job injuries in their upper limbs. Located near Miami International Airport, it is very convenient for traveling patients who come from Latin America seeking Dr. Badia’s expert care. The celebration of the fifth anniversary of the foundation of the Center is for Dr. Badia the perfect moment to share with his neighbors in Doral all about his career, experiences and future projects. Born in Havana,Cuba in 1963, Alejandro Badia was interested in science since a very young age “I wanted to be a surgeon. I like to work with my hands”. He grew up in New York, mainly being cared for by his grandparents while his parents worked. His grandmother Consuelo suffered from a very crippling rheumatoid arthritis. That influenced his decision of becoming a hand surgeon. “That is one of my passions; I have always loved treating rheumatoid patients. It is one of the reasons I went into hand surgery” says Badia. In every one of those patients with arthritis he feels he is able to ease his own grandmother’s pain, while giving them back their ability to fully use their hands. The strong will to enhance the quality of life and to provide the best service possible to his patients is what prompted Dr. Badia to create the ‘Hand to Shoulder Center’ 5 years ago and still is the fuel that provides his energy to continue educating future generations of hand surgeons, with the same values and dedication of those who trained him. Fellow doctors come to train with him at the center from the entire world and he also makes videos and presentations documenting those cases that are interesting to use them on his lectures, providing other doctors with the necessary knowledge to perform this kind of specialized job; “I want the community to know that this center was founded with the interest to continue to educate other surgeons”. There are not that many hand surgeons in the U.S.; Dr. Alejandro Badia has been listed as one of the 318 Top Hand Surgeons on ‘U.S. News Top Doctors’. It is definitely an advantage to count with such an excellent physician on this very specialized field available in the City of Doral. The ‘Badia Hand to Shoulder Center’ was developed with the idea of providing all the services for upper limb patients in one place, minimizing waiting times
and improving quality of service, with focus on providing the optimal solution. It counts with a state-ofthe-art outpatient surgical center, imaging equipment, and an urgent care facility for orthopedic injuries named ‘OrthoNow’ created in 2010, located in the second floor of the same building. OrthoNow services patients, either with appointment or walk-ins, with muscle-skeletal injuries beyond hands, arms and shoulders. There is also a physical and occupational therapy facility called ‘Integra’ where patients can complete their treatment until reaching full recovery. Patients in need of attention for any kind of urgent orthopedic injury in the whole body have a ‘one-stop shop’ for their health care needs in ‘Badia Hand to Shoulder Center’ and the offices that provide supplemental services, all located in the same building: 3650 NW 82nd avenue in Doral,Fla. “In our surgical facility the infection rate is zero. In a hospital there are risks of infections with bacteria around the hospital. Here we have a clean operating room and I am very confident when I do the surgery there is no risk of infection, we only take clean cases” explains Dr. Badia. Cases with risk of infections are treated in the hospital. Dr. Badia’s patients range from premature babies with congenital hand defects to a 104 year old patient that recovered
the use of her hands after a surgery. “It was worth the risk. She couldn’t sleep at night with the pain. We did the surgery, eliminated the pain and improved her quality of life!” says Badia with a smile. It is very gratifying for a doctor to see his patients leaving the office happy and healthy. Doctors do not expect gifts, but Dr. Badia treasures the letters and thank you notes he has received from grateful patient all these years. It means the world to him receiving those thank you letters, positive reviews or referrals from former patients. Those are the best testaments of the great service he provided. Badia says that “the challenge these five years has been people awareness of having this service available here in Doral. The gratifications are being able to do everything in one place, without having to go to a hospital. They don’t need to wait for an operating room. We can focus on what we do without competing with other surgeons or disciplines for the resources in a hospital” Dr. Badia is looking forward to the celebration of the fifth anniversary and to fulfilling the projects he has for the future, which includes “having even more focus on the international patients with complex problems, patients with rheumatoid disease that can’t find help in their own countries that can come here. I’d like that, it is pure medicine. People come seeking help on specific problem and I can focus a lot of my practice on that, and I’d like to develop the OrthoNow franchise worldwide”, concludes Dr. Badia. More information on the services of the ‘Hand to Shoulders Center’ can be obtained at www.drbadia.com or dialing 305-227-HAND. Dr. Badia is very active in twitter. He can be reached @DrBadia or downloading the mobile app OrthoNow for Apple and Android

What should I do for Father’s Day if my child’s father is not in the picture? A: Father’s Day is a day designated to appreciate male role models in individual lives. A common misconception is that this particular role model is defined as the biological father of your child. In many households this role is fulfilled by other influential people in your child’s life such as an uncle, cousin, brother, grandfather or more. In certain cases a single mother is the sole caregiver in a child’s life and should be recognized as such. The primary focus of this celebratory day is to recognize appreciation for male role models in the child’s life that make the child feel nurtured and allow them an opportunity to express gratitude for the loving care provided that has strengthened their bond. The traditional family structure has evolved into a diverse blend of roles that comprise the modern family. As unique as every child is, so is their family structure and the roles that each of them possess. Remember: A personal touch to a gift will go much further than a commercialized item. Anyone can be a father but only special people can be called Daddy! Breakfast in bed, preparation of a favorite meal, engage in a favorite activity, or allow for a simple lazy day.

DORAL MUSIC CENTER, teaches using the Yamaha Music Foundation By Cristina Rutherford
D
oral Music Center is a music academy whose pillar is the Yamaha Music Foundation, a teaching method that allows both children and adults to learn music following an educational and consistent system. This method is based on three fundamental concepts: timely education, group lessons and emphasis on creativity. Thanks to the management and direction of Antonio Alvarado, our city has a center that operates following this methodology.

Antonio Alvarado
26
Alvarado has more than 25 years of experience in the area of the music and audio; first as a musician, then in sales and now as director and educator of the center. During his career, Alvarado became aware of the needs and cultural opportunities that exist in South Florida and decided to make a special contribution to his community, by opening this academy. In 1954, Yamaha, the largest instrument manufacturer of the world, developed in Tokyo musical foundations for the teaching of this art. Currently Yamaha Music Foundation has more than 680.000 students in 5.400 locations worldwide. Alvarado explains, “Because of its exposure to the music, Yamaha created this innovative method that fits the current dynamic of our society. Yamaha discovered that if you find an efficient way to engage students to digest the required concepts, learning is made easier and this way they can start playing instruments in a short period. The atmosphere in our
school is warm, where students feel safe and want to participate. This social integration is vital, because nowadays with all the technology children tend to be isolated”. Alvarado clarifies, “The main concept is that if you can sing it you can play it. The traditional educational system to teach music has existed for centuries and it can be somewhat tedious or frustrating, making people quit halfway. It has almost always been taught on a unilateral basis, a teacher tells the student what to do.” Yamaha has incorporated a system of proven education and has determined that when classes are given in small groups (with a maximum of 6 participants) then students can benefit more than with individual classes, and in addition they share and have fun in a healthy way under the teachings and guidance of a professor. With the Yamaha method fresh melodies are used and classical elements are incorporated afterwards. It is based in defined lessons and it is dictated in an organized manner, however each professor makes adjustments for each group. Alvarado explains, “We have a commitment to the families and to music itself. We focus on the musical training of the child that depends on each student”. At Doral Music Center they work very closely with the parents, the channels of communication are always open to see how the child is progressing. The ideal age to start a musical education is 4 years, although there is no rule for this. From his experience Alvarado sees that in Doral they start a bit older. “My students range from 3 to 52 years of age. We offer singing, piano, violin, guitar and bass classes. We speak with the children and the parents to see which instrument they are most interested in learning.” “The wonderful thing about music is that with perseverance, gratification can be felt in a short period of time. It is a process, just as Edison said: “Success is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration”. It is hard work, but at the end there are great rewards.” In South Florida there are only two schools that use Yamaha Music Foundations. Alvarado felt the need to open a center with such an inclusive method in Doral; a city with an important musical presence. “Our teachers take a rigorous examination, certified by Yamaha and are trained to learn their methodology.” “This is an adventure,” says Alvarado. “Doral has great potential because it has excellent schools and there is a huge student population. However, because
of the budget cuts, sometimes schools do not promote bands or musical education. The majority of the families of Doral have a favorable economic situation and acknowledge that the child’s academic side should be enhanced with other activities, not only sports, but also in the cultural field. It is preferable that children study music, practice some sport or do some form of art than play video games all day.” Alvarado ends by saying, “I try to listen to my client and to get to know this market. I have my heart set on this project and I think that this center has incredible potential. At the end music is culture, it is art, it is part of our lives; and as long as there are more families involved there are going to be more people who are doing something culturally positive and that way they will stay away from negative influences, or simply from indifference. One creates the community and the sense of family, and that is the basis of our society.”

D
June/Junio 23, 2013
www. do ralf am iy jour nal. c om
28
Antonio Alvarado a nivel mundial.

s part of a nation that has been at war for over twelve years, the number of veterans living among us has increased. There are currently, 23 million U.S. veterans including 2 million and counting from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unfortunately, reintegration back into civilian life for those who have bravely served in our nation’s armed forces has certainly never been an easy process. As many returning veterans must deal with issues ranging from battlefield-related diseases, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), to finding employment in a still-recovering economy. The Miami-Dade County Military Affairs Board is committed to advocating on behalf of military personnel and their families on the issues of incarceration and reintegration. For that very reason I, as Chairman of the Military Affairs Board, recently welcomed State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle to a meeting where the Military Affairs Board discussed its partnership with the State’s Attorney Office to support their creation of a Veteran’s Court system in Miami-Dade County. During this meeting, the different board members were able to share their views over the implementation of such a program and what course it should take to best forge a solution to this issue within our community.
30
Modeled after the Miami-Dade County Drug Court, which was the first of its kind and came to be duly replicated across the country, the focus of a Veteran’s Court is rehabilitation rather than incarceration for those who have served our country, yet now find themselves facing severe reintegration challenges and showcasing non-violent criminal behaviors. Such courts aim to strike a balance between the need for effective treatment of a veteran and the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions. This is accomplished by assessing the specific needs of individual veterans and then ensuring court-mandated participation in many already-existing Veterans Affairs programs as an alternative to their arrest. This approach has proven effective because instead of attempting to address individual instances, it concentrates on remedying the underlying issues that lead to such repeated transgressions. Particularly troubling to me is the fact that a veteran’s federal benefits and social services are terminated after an arrest, even before having been proven guilty. With one in six veterans from Operations Enduring Freedom
and Iraqi Freedom suffering from a substance abuse issue, it is scary to think that so many of these men and women who so bravely stood for us in the past would be facing such grave difficulties. This is why it is essential that the Military Affairs Board provide as much assistance to them as possible. In line with this duty, I fully support the prospect of Military Affairs Board members being influential in finding and selecting mentors to assist these veterans. Such a step would help provide an additional pillar of support that would not only give them a channel from which they can vent on, but also provide valuable personal advice from individuals involved within the military community. This subject carries with it a sense of urgency because substance abuse and petty crime can have a large effect on propagating veteran homelessness, which is a further burden upon our society.

IJF Miami Grand Prix gathered world class Judo athletes in Doral

t never fails. There is nothing like the adrenaline rush you can feel when watching a final judo match, where the ceremonial protocol combines with the intensity of the fight between two strong athletes in Judogi that have worked very hard to reach this moment. Last weekend in the Doral Country Club Resort and Spa, there were at stake not only medals or cash prizes, but the prestige of being recognized among the best in the world and the necessary points in the international arena to start the journey that will hopefully take the athletes to the Olympics in Rio 2016. Being the first time a Judo Grand Prix took place in the United States, the International Judo Federation and USA Judo achieved a great success in athlete’s participation, event organization and extraordinary results for the local delegation. Marti Malloy won the Gold Medal on the -57Kg category and Colton Brown got the Bronze on the -90kg; those were the highlights of the weekend, bringing pride and excitement to a fervent crowd of local fans that filled the house, chanting ‘USA, USA’ to support their athletes in home soil. On the days prior to the event, USA Judo organized a series of demonstrations and presentations on several parks and schools in Miami, where young judoka had the chance meet up close with their idols: Olympic Champion Kayla Harrison, first judoka to win an Olympic Gold Medal for the US; Marti Malloy, Olympic Bronze Medalist; Myles Porter, Silver Medalist in the Paralympics and Olympian Travis Stevens, the warrior. Doral Family Journal had the opportunity to talk with these world class athletes about their Olympic experience, how their lives have changed in this year after coming back from London, their upcoming projects and their decision of embarking on this new journey that will hopefully, with hard work and dedication, take them to Rio 2016. They have done it already. And they will do it again!
42
Kayla Harrison and Marti Malloy: an inspiration to young athletes They are so mature, so grown up. It was impressive to see how much they have changed since the interview we had with them right before the Olympics. When they think about it, they are grateful of the many opportunities that have opened for them after winning their Olympic medals, especially for Kayla Harrison, who is still in awe of having gone where no other American Judoka had gone before and bringing home the Olympic Gold Medal: “we have the opportunity to be inspirational figures to young kids, and for people’s life. I can’t think of a better thing to be than that”. And Marti Malloy, Olympic Bronze Medalist and
winner of the Gold in the Grand Prix adds “I would have never believed some things I have done. It makes you grow up. You compare how my life has changed now; I would say I feel a lot more content. At that time we were all so nervous and excited. Now I feel content. I feel a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I see everything from a new perspective. I know you might want to hear ’I am much more busy’, which I think I have, but the biggest change I have noticed is how I feel about judo and where am I going next”. Marti’s plans include pursuing her Master degree in Journalism and Mass Communications at San Jose State University in California, while continuing her Olympic preparation for Rio 2016. Her upcoming Judo events after the Grand Prix are her participation in July on the Grand Slam in Moscow and the World Championship in Brazil in August. She is busy indeed. Olympic Champion Kayla Harrison has received many accolades since coming back from London. She won the ‘Wilma Rudolph Courage Award’ from the Women’s Sports Foundation; was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and was named one of Glamour Magazine Women of the year 2012. “This last year of my life has been an amazing ride. All those things have happened and I feel really content with my life. I have being given so many opportunities to give back and help people that have been through similar situations as me. I feel it is my responsibility to give back. So I think that out of everything has happened, my ability to speak up and be a voice for those who don’t have a voice is the most rewarding”. Right after the Grand Slam Kayla had surgery on her knee and will be recovering before starting training for her next goal “Definitely Rio, the next Olympics”. During her recovery time she wants to focus on creating her foundation and writing a book on her life and experience overcoming abuse and rising to be a world class athlete and champion. “I have been giving a lot of speeches lately. The biggest piece of advice I can say is that there is always going to be challenges and roadblocks in life. Life is not easy, it sucks sometimes but if you believe in yourself and you surround with people who believe in you,
Kayla Harrison you can achieve your greatest dream, anything. I am living proof”. It is a delight interviewing them together as they are very good friends, mutually sharing words of support, admiration and encouragement and reflecting on what it means to be an icon of perseverance and success for many people, a realization they had recently, while doing presentations during the community outreach program they did in Miami prior to the Grand Slam. Being introduced as the champions to the crowd of young athletes, seeing their admiring faces they saw themselves more than 15 years ago, when they had the chance of meeting Mike Swain and Jimmy Pedro, also Olympians and now their coaches. It just sunk in they are role models for a whole new generation of judoka in the US. “You just think of yourself like you. I think and feel of myself the same way as before, but it puts me on perspective. It kind of hits me when people say something like ‘you changed my life or ever since I saw you fight I have been so inspired’ “says Marti. And Kayla adds “It is honoring when people ask ‘would you take a picture with my baby?’. People wave and smile to you. It is an honor to me that people respect me enough and thinks highly enough of me to ask that”. These young women can definitely divide their lives in before and after London 2012. Kayla defines it as “a big divider, a highlight in my life. I think we changed in a good way”; while Marti says “We are not the same people. We have a different outlook, different perspective, and different goals”. “Traveling the world together we had an amazing experience” concludes Marti. It has been an

Travis and Myles: “Judo takes you to the ends of the Earth and back” Travis Stevens might have come back empty handed from London, but he is the champion to all his adoring fans who still question the call the referee made on that semifinal against Ole Bischoff. In spite of how devastated he felt about it, he bounced back. “I started taking up Jiu-jitsu full time. I own 2 schools in New Jersey and one in Boston. Those are my daily activities besides doing judo. We are preparing a DVD for Jiu-jitsu players with Jimmy Pedro. I am pretty busy.” says Travis. He did not participate on the Grand Prix due to an ankle injury and expects to be fully recovered for the World Championship this August. “The plan right now is to be ready for Rio 2016”. A plan shared by Paralympic Silver Medalist Myles Porter: “I am training for Rio. After London I got to come back and be able to help kids with visual impairment around the country. USA Judo wanted me to be an ambassador for the sport, and show that even being visually impaired, I can fight adversity. I am going to participate on the Grand Prix; and hope I can get back my points. The ultimate goal is to go in the Olympics. I loved going to the Paralympics, but that is the stepping stone of something better. I want
to make it to Rio as one of Travis’ team mates. I want to represent the US twice in the same year; they can’t do it, but I can because I am visually impaired. It might be a disability but it still is my advantage”. The road of competitive judo “will take you to the ends of the Earth and back” says Travis, but is a journey worth training hard for. And Myles concludes “Judo is for everybody. No matter if you want to be an Olympic champion or just a recreational player. It opens up the whole world for you”. The next event USA Marti Malloy (USA) with Hedvig Karakas (HUN), Jovana Rogic (SRB), Judo will host in Doral Miryam Roper (GER) and Helene Receveaux (FRA) is the Cadet World Championship in August, them it is the first step to reach the high level that where the best young athletes of the world, between Judo stars of today have. For the public it will be the 15 and 17 years old, will gather in the US to compete chance to get the adrenaline rush again. And to take for qualification to participate in the Youth Olympic notes on the names that will shine in the future of Games that will take place in China in 2014. For Judo worldwide.

unca falla.

On June 8th, Born2Learn celebrated it’s 12th Prek-4 graduation. The student performances during the “Around the World” musical part of the ceremony were a testimony to the strong sense of self and confidence that they have achieved through the personalized attention and emotional bonds that Born2Learn is known for throughout the community. The 37 students that make up Born2Learn’s class of 2013 were among the best prepared graduates this preschool has seen. Academically, they are ready to meet and exceed the challenges of Kindergarten. A large majority of them have conquered the skill of reading and have now immersed themselves in the magical world of books in B2L’s book themed summer camp. As it is their tradition, the emotional diploma ceremony culminated in the student performance of the song “I Can Do Anything!” which perfectly expresses this school’s goal. Children who feel secure and cared for by nurturing, receptive teachers can indeed accomplish anything. While these students have met the VPK standards and Born2Learn developmental objectives, the greatest pride for the teachers and directors is to see children who have blossomed in self-confidence and proudly embody this school’s legendary reputation. The team at Smile Studio Health Club visited the instalations of Divine Savior Academy located at our City of Doral and gave a private speech to a group of 60 kids doing summer camp on how to properly mantain their oral health. They first were questioned on how they brush and floss and then showed step by step on how to do the homework and then learned by learning a famous song.
