Mayor Boria’s State of the City Address, Trump and Miss Universe: Worlds of contrast

f you had the chance to attend this year’s State of the City Address in Doral, the contrast between this year and last year’s was palpable. The room was packed with city staff, Council members, Doral police officers and special guests. “Is an honor to stand here as the Mayor of this great city we all agree is an exceptional one. I wonder how many cities in our nation have doubled their population in ten years; have an unemployment rate below 4%, and count on a highly qualified, multilingual and multicultural workforce. These are just some of the facts that make Doral the preferred destination of those who decide to open their business here, or make it their home, or both, like in my case, and the case of so many others that have found in Doral the right place to raise their families”, this is how Mayor Boria began his speech. According to Mayor Luigi Boria, the State of the City is strong and Doral is stronger than ever. No more extending olive branches and the drama we experienced during the 2013 ceremony. The Mayor highlighted each of the city departments in a speech that sometimes seemed a little long but gave the public a detailed account of what Doral has been doing behind the scenes. In a way, it was positive to know that behind the political fights, the bitter elections, the controversies surrounding the Trump Resort and the Miss Universe pageant, the city is moving forward investing in parks and public works and more police officers and safety equipment. Boria proudly announced the recent groundbreaking of the N.W 114th Ave Park, a state of the art facility of 18 acres that will have a 35,000 square feet cultural center, and that everyone is waiting with open arms. “This park benefit the entire City; The construction of this park will be completed by early 2016, if not earlier”, said the Mayor. Doral is exploding with new residential areas. But as we know, this explosion of residences is and will make the traffic in Doral worst than ever. The Mayor promised to work closely with the County and the State but didn’t give concrete details on what he will do to fix the problem. This continues to be the number one headache in Doral and from what we gathered it will become worst before it gets better.

He also gave an account of all the road improvements including those already in place on 117th, 107th and 87th Avenue. He also mentioned as a 2014 achievement the completion of the design work that will connect NW 97th Avenue from NW 70th to NW 74th streets, plus the plans to complete the bike lanes network in 2015. As we know, building and planning go hand in hand and DFJ hopes that is also the case with Doral. Either we plan ahead, or we have a potential and permanent gridlock in the making. Other aspect of the City’s accomplishments we all agree is good news in 2014 was the decision by Standard & Poor’s to raise the City’s credit rating from from AA- (double A minus) to AA (double A). This will make the city borrow at a less interest rate, making our tax payer money work better for us. Doral also continues to have one of the highest reserves in the whole county. Mayor Luigi Boria said: “Maintaining the healthy state of our finances is essential to accomplish the plans we need to continue moving our city forward’. Mayor Boria also mentioned the achievements of the Code Compliance Department.

“This year, our Code Compliance team continued fostering a positive overall experience for both the stakeholders and staff alike while providing for an increased quality of life that is easily recognizable. This department continuous its efforts to educate business and property owners on the City codes and the steps to gain compliance with identified violations”, Boria said. Their task is not easy and they are in charge of receiving all complains from the Trump Resort neighbors and the planting of the palm trees.

Only two days after delivering the state of the city, a group organized by Concerned Citizens of Doral held a demonstration in front of the Trump Resort demanding the recall of Mayor Boria and chanting “Trump Go Home.” The demonstrations pale in comparison to those now witnessed all across the nation against Police violence. These demonstrators went to the extreme of blocking I-95 around downtown Miami. The ones here in Doral were smart enough not to block traffic. That’s the last thing we need here in Doral, more traffic. The Mayor has two more years to make the city better but he will have several bumps on the road, there is no question about it. If the state of the city address demonstrated a city calmer and less dramatic from the political and management perspective, rest assured this is only temporary. The other chapter in the city’s political upheaval is the position of the City Clerk. The clerk, Barbara Herrera, worked for the city for nine years and filed a lawsuit in the U.S. EEOC (United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) after learning about the plans of newly elected Councilman Pete Cabrera to dismiss her. The Council gave the OK to fire her on a 4 to 1 vote, on the past meeting of the city.

El Estado de la Ciudad, Trump y el Miss Universo: Mundos de contraste Por Ettore Sabatella

i usted tuvo la oportunidad de asistir al Estado de la Ciudad 2014 en Doral, el contraste entre este año y el año pasado fue palpable. La sala estaba llena de personal de la ciudad, miembros del Concejo, agentes de la policía de Doral e invitados especiales. “Es un honor estar aquí como el alcalde de esta gran ciudad y que todos coincidimos, es excepcional. Me pregunto cuántas ciudades de nuestra nación han duplicado su población en diez años; tienen una tasa de desempleo por debajo del 4%, y cuentan con una mano de obra altamente calificada, multilingüe y multicultural. Estos son sólo algunos de los hechos que hacen que Doral sea el destino preferido de los que deciden abrir sus negocios aquí, o convertirla en su hogar, o ambos, y que han encontrado en Doral, el lugar adecuado para mantener a sus familias”, es así como el alcalde Boria inició su discurso. Según el alcalde Luigi Boria, el estado de la ciudad es fuerte y Doral esta más fuerte que nunca. No más ofrecimientos de ramas de olivo o el drama que experimentamos durante la ceremonia del 2013. Durante el Estado de la Ciudad de este año, el alcalde destacó cada uno de los departamentos de la ciudad, en un discurso que a veces parecía un poco largo, pero le dio al público un informe detallado de lo que Doral ha estado haciendo tras bastidores. En cierto modo, fue positivo saber que detrás de las luchas políticas, las elecciones amargas, las controversias en torno al Trump Resort y vecinos, y al concurso del Miss Universo, la ciudad está avanzando invirtiendo en parques y obras públicas, más policías y en equipos de seguridad. El Alcalde Boria anunció con orgullo el reciente movimiento de tierra en la NW 114 Ave Park, el cual abarca mas de 18 acres para la construcción de un centro para áreas deportivas y áreas culturales. Esta es una construcción de 35,000 pies cuadrados, y que todo el mundo está esperando con los brazos abiertos. “Este parque beneficiará a toda la ciudad; La construcción de este parque se completará a principios de 2016, si no antes”, dijo el alcalde. Doral está explotando nuevas zonas residenciales. Pero, como sabemos, esta explosión de nue-

vas residencias es y hará que el tráfico en Doral empeore mas que nunca. El alcalde se comprometió a trabajar en estrecha colaboración con el Condado y el Estado, pero no dio detalles concretos sobre lo que va a hacer para solucionar el problema. Este sigue siendo el número uno de los dolores de cabeza en nuestra ciudad. Boria también hizo un recuento de las mejoras de las calles como las que ya existen en la 117, 107 y la 87 Avenida. También mencionó como un logro del 2014, la realización del trabajo de diseño que conectará el Noroeste de la 97 Avenida desde la calle 70 hasta la calle 74 del Noroeste, además de los planes para completar la línea de carriles para bicicletas en el 2015. Como sabemos, la construcción y la planificación van de la mano y Doral Family Journal espera que este también sea el caso de Doral. O planificamos el futuro, o tenemos un estancamiento potencial y permanente. Otro aspecto de la ciudad y todos estamos de acuerdo, fue la buena noticia en el 2014 sobre la decisión de Standard & Poor’s para elevar la calificación crediticia de la Ciudad de AA- (doble A menos) a AA (doble A)... Esto hace que la ciudad tenga un préstamo a una baja tasa de interés, por lo que el dinero de los contribuyentes de más frutos. Doral sigue teniendo una de las reservas más altas en todo el condado. “Mantener el buen estado de nuestras finanzas es esencial para llevar a cabo los planes que tenemos para seguir avanzando”, dijo Boria. El Alcalde Boria también mencionó los logros del

Departamento de Cumplimiento de Códigos. “Este año, nuestro equipo de Cumplimiento de Códigos continuó fomentando una experiencia positiva en general, tanto para los interesados como para el personal, mientras prevén un aumento de la calidad de vida que es fácilmente reconocible. Este departamento continua sus esfuerzos por educar a los dueños de negocios y propietarios sobre los códigos de la ciudad y los pasos a seguir en el cumplimiento de violaciones identificadas”. Y es que la tarea de este Departamento no es fácil ya que, están a cargo de la recepción de todas las quejas de los vecinos del Trump Resort y la plantación de las palmeras. Tan sólo dos días después del discurso del Estado de la Ciudad, un grupo organizado por Concerned Citizens of Doral (Ciudadanos Preocupados por Doral), realizó una manifestación frente al Trump Resort exigiendo la destitución del alcalde Boria y cantando “Trump Go Home” (Trump vuelve a casa). Esta manifestación palideció en comparación con las que hay ahora por toda la nación contra la violencia policial, e incluso algunos manifestantes llegaron al extremo de bloquear la I-95 por el centro de Miami. Aunque la manifestación en Doral fue lo suficientemente inteligente como para no bloquear el tráfico. Esa es la última cosa que necesitamos aquí en Doral, más tráfico! El alcalde tiene dos años más para trabajar para que la ciudad sea mejor, pero él tendrá varios baches en el camino, no hay duda al respecto. Si el estado de la ciudad de dirección de la ciudad demostró una ciudad más tranquila y menos dramática desde el punto de vista político y de gestión, usted puede estar seguro de que esto es temporal. Otro capítulo de la agitación política de la ciudad es la posición de la Secretaría de la Ciudad. Barbara Herrera, trabajó para la ciudad durante nueve años y presentó una demanda en la Comisión de los Estados Unidos de Igualdad de Oportunidades de Empleo (United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), después de enterarse de los planes del recién elegido concejal Pete Cabrera para despedirla. El Concejo estuvo de acuerdo con Cabrera y acordaron en despedirla en un voto de 4 a 1 durante la reunión del 10 de diciembre.

Sebastian and Alejandro Mejia: Mayor and Police Chief for a Day

O

n December 1, 2014 for the first time ever, the city of Doral handed over the keys to the City to 8 year-old Sebastian Mejia as Honoree Mayor for a day, and to his 7 year-old brother Alejandro Mejia, as Honoree Chief of Police. This emotional ceremony was led by Mayor Luigi Boria and Councilwoman Ms. Christi Fraga, and was accompanied by Chief of Police Don De Lucca, City Manager Mr. Edward Rojas, John I. Smith K-8 Center principal Mr. Genaro Navarro, parents Mrs. Maria Fernanda Gonzalez and Mr. Iván Darío Mejía, Doral police officers, friends and community members, who acknowledged these brave young boys for their dedication, academic excellence and outstanding desire to achieve big dreams. As described by Mayor Boria, “Those who know Sebastian and Alejandro can attest to the spirit and motivation they share with their classmates, friends, and family members. Their teachers know how dedicated they are to their school work despite having to miss school due to circumstances that are beyond their control.” The Mayor referred to them as “an example of brave young hearts” and thanked them for the inspiration they give to this community.

MEETING THE MEJIA BROTHERS

Sebastian and Alejandro, born in the USA and their parents from Colombia, have lived in this city since 2001. They are in 2nd and 3rd grade at John I Smith K-8 Center and it’s there that they have distinguished themselves as being dedicated students, responsible and very polite children. They like books about history, the arts, Discovery and History Channel content, and to their parent’s surprise, they enjoy music groups and singers such as Air Supply, the Bee Gees and Michael Jackson. Because of their well-known greeting: “Good morning, God bless you”, they never go unnoticed. Thanks to their contagious joy and candor, nobody could imagine at first sight that Sebastian and Alejandro have faced major obstacles throughout their lives. From the moment of their birth, both children were diagnosed with Bannayan-RileyRuvalcuba syndrome, an others serious medical conditions that requires daily treatments and special care that differ greatly from what most other children normally live through at their age.

up their savings to help with household expenses if necessary. Hence their Santa’s lists include gifts such as love, food and toys for children with economic and special needs. Both also asked for the Cross of God because they are children with great faith and they talk about it with such purity saying that they “love God as God loves them.” During their visit to the city they didn’t forget to thank everyone for joining them that afternoon, because gratitude is another virtue they have. They thank their parents and the people around them for everything they do to support them. By the way the treat their parents and others, they have been an example even to their teachers: “Sebastian inspires me with his love for his family and education,” Ms. Pastora offered. “They are my role model,” added Ms. Reed.

THE MEJIA FAMILY: EXAMPLE OF LOVE, UNITY AND VIRTUES

However, they do not let their health issues stop them from fulfilling their school duties. With admirable dedication, they are more concerned than anyone about getting good grades, neatly completely their homework, studying for the tests and not getting behind when they miss school. Their great efforts have granted them over 73 awards for their performance in academics and good behavior. The everyday challenges that Sebastian and Alejandro have faced at such a young age have given them a different view of life and expectations to reach their goals. They teach everyone that dreams are possible if people really believe in them. “Sebastian has a piggy bank where he saves whatever he can because he wants to go to Harvard and be a lawyer. He wants to be sure he is well-prepared to become President of the United States,” his mother Maria Fernanda shared. “Alejandro is very attached to his brother and wants to support him all the time, so his dream is to be the pilot of the presidential plane,” added his father Ivan. These brothers are sweet, generous and sensitive to the needs of others. They don’t hesitate to share what they have and repeatedly have offered

The Mejia family has no great luxuries or material comforts, but they do have a wealthy secret for sharing, and that is love. For them what is most important is to find happiness in the simple things, living together in harmony, enjoying each moment to the fullest facing each eventuality with peace, hope and faith. “We love spending time as a family, playing with our children, listening and talking to them. Serving and educating them with tenderness,” says Mrs. Maria Fernanda. “I am very sad when I meet parents who don’t realize how lucky they are that their children are healthy, and I notice that sometimes they spend time attending other activities first and neglect the most important, which is to live each day to the fullest”. The Mejía couple also share their learning in raising their children: “Many people get surprised that our children are so polite, when they say hello, thank you, or give them the blessing because that is not so common now. For us, it is important to teach our children to be respectful and grateful for everything in life.” “In our experience as parents, love gets everything. If we treat our children with love, we will receive the same and they will also express that love to others. If any discipline is necessary, it’s never a reason for

screaming or fighting because everything is done with love.” “As parents we also receive teachings from our children. They teach us to be humble, to be caring, and to see material things as necessary for life but not as the center of our lives. With them we have learned that there are two things that are very valuable: health and dreams.”

EFFECT IN THE COMMUNITY

It was the gleam in the eyes of Sebastian and his conviction to achieve his dream of becoming President that motivated a group of “Angels of Love” as Mrs. Maria Fernanda calls them, to bring the stories of her two sons to the City of Doral. Because these children have moved so many people, volunteers found time out of their busy schedules to join efforts to accomplish this noble cause, as stated by Claudia Mariaca member of PTSA of John I. Smith K-8: “Children like Sebastian and Alejandro remind us how important it is to put aside any of our differences and work together as a community, to help out our neighbors. They inspire us to do good. I wish that this feeling was contagious, so our City of Doral could work together for a better tomorrow for all our residents”. Councilwoman Christi Fraga also commented:

“Moments like this bring home why I chose to become a public servant. One of the things that public service should be about is being able to provide support and joy when one of our Doral families is in need. The strength and love of the Mejia

family gives hope to anyone experiencing difficult times. It has certainly inspired me, particularly during this season of gathering, to bring our community together to help families in need”. These comments were materialized by the Doral Police officers who also showed their sympathy and solidarity to the family by collecting money as a gift from their behalf. “We are so grateful to everyone who participated in giving such joy to our children, especially to the City of Doral for making this special day happen. It was like moving forward the calendar 20 years from now and imagining that with God’s blessing, they will have the health to achieve what they desire. To be able to see their smiles and joy was priceless,” expressed the Mejía couple who also thanked the medical staff at Miami Children’s Hospital, teachers and members of the PTSA John I. Smith K-8 and everyone for their unconditional love. Mayor Boria promised to send a letter to President Obama and the Conference of Mayors sharing the story of these brave children. We trust that this noble gesture may help not only them, but also other children sharing the same desires in turning their dreams into reality.

Sebastián y Alejandro Mejía Alcalde y Jefe de la Policía por un Día

l pasado 1ro de Diciembre, de una manera muy especial y por primera vez en su historia, la ciudad de Doral hizo entrega de las Llaves de la Ciudad al nombrar como Alcalde Honorario a Sebastián Mejía de 8 años y como Jefe de la Policía por un día a su hermano Alejandro Mejía de 7 años. Este emotivo acto fue liderado por el Alcalde Luigi Boria y la Concejal Christi Fraga, quienes junto al Jefe de la Policía Don De Lucca, el Administrador Edward Rojas, el director de la escuela John I. Smith K-8 Genaro Navarro, los padres Sra. Maria Fernanda González y el Sr. Iván Darío Mejía, así como oficiales de policía, amigos y miembros de la comunidad, reconocieron a estos valientes pequeños por su dedicación, excelencia académica y deseos de cumplir sus metas. En palabras del Alcalde Boria: “Los que conocen a Sebastián y Alejandro puede hablar del espíritu y motivación que comparten con sus compañeros, amigos y miembros de su familia. Sus profesores saben lo dedicados que son a pesar de tener que faltar debido a circunstancias que están fuera de su control”. El alcalde se refirió a ellos como “un ejemplo de corazones valientes” y agradeció la inspiración que dan a esta comunidad.

UNA MIRADA DE CERCA A LOS HERMANITOS MEJÍA

Sebastián y Alejandro nacieron en USA y junto a sus padres originarios de Colombia, han residido en esta ciudad desde el 2001. Asisten a la escuela John I. Smith K-8 en 3er y 2do grado y se han distinguido por ser estudiosos, responsables y muy educados. Les gustan los libros de historia, artes, programas de Discovery y History Channel y para sorpresa de sus padres, la música de Air Supply, Bee Gees y Michael Jackson. Con su saludo “Buenos días, que Dios le bendiga”, nunca pasan desapercibidos. Gracias a su contagiosa alegría y candidez, nadie imaginaria que Sebastián y Alejandro han tenido que enfrentar duras pruebas a lo largo de su vida. Desde el momento de su nacimiento, ambos fueron diagnosticados con el Síndrome Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcuba junto a otras condiciones médicas serias que requieren tratamientos diarios y cuidados especiales muy distintos a las rutinas que nor-

malmente viven los niños en esas edades. Sin embargo, ellos no permiten que su salud impida cumplir sus deberes. Con admirable voluntad son ellos mismos los más preocupados en sacar buenas calificaciones, completar con esmero sus tareas, estudiar para sus exámenes y no retrasarse si faltan a la escuela. Gracias a sus esfuerzos cuentan con más de 73 certificados por su rendimiento estudiantil y comportamiento. Tal vez los retos de cada día han hecho que Sebastián y Alejandro a sus cortas edades vean la vida con otro lente y tengan grandes metas para su futuro. Ellos enseñan que los sueños son posibles si realmente se cree en ellos. “Sebastián tiene una alcancía donde ahorra todo lo que puede porque desea ser abogado e ir a Harvard y así prepararse bien para llegar a ser el Presidente de los Estados Unidos”, cuenta su mamá Maria Fernanda. “Alejandro es muy unido a su hermano y quiere apoyarlo todo el tiempo, por eso su sueño es ser el piloto del avión presidencial” agrega su papá Iván. Estos hermanitos son tiernos, generosos y sensibles a las necesidades de otros. No dudan en compartir lo que tienen y en varias ocasiones han ofrecido hasta sus ahorros para colaborar con los gastos de la casa si es necesario. De allí que sus listas de regalo a Santa incluyan amor, comida y juguetes para los niños con necesidades especiales o económicas. Ambos pidieron también la Cruz de Dios pues son niños con mucha fe que expresan con gran pureza que “aman a Dios y Dios los ama a ellos”. En su visita a la ciudad no olvidaron agradecer a los presentes por estar allí, pues el agradecimiento es otra de sus virtudes. Agradecen a sus padres todo lo que hacen por ellos y a las personas que los rodean. Por la forma en que se tratan a sus padres y entre ellos son un ejemplo de amor hasta para sus maestras: “Sebastián es una inspiración para

mí, por el amor a su familia y su educación”, Ms. Pastora. “Ellos son mi modelo a seguir”, Ms. Reed.

LA FAMILIA MEJÍA: EJEMPLO DE AMOR, UNIÓN Y VIRTUDES

La familia Mejía no goza de grandes lujos o comodidades materiales, pero tienen una riqueza invaluable y es el amor. Para ellos lo más importante es la felicidad de las cosas sencillas, vivir unidos, disfrutar cada instante a plenitud afrontando las eventualidades con paz, esperanza y fe. “Nos encanta compartir tiempo en familia, jugar con nuestros hijos, escucharlos y hablarles, atenderlos y educarlos con cariño” dice la Sra. Fernanda. “Me da mucha tristeza cuando veo padres que no se dan cuenta del tesoro tan grande que es la salud en sus hijos. Que dan por hecho que los tienen y a veces colocan otras cosas en primer lugar y descuidan lo más importante que es vivir cada día al máximo”. Los esposos Mejía comparten también sus aprendizajes en la crianza de sus niños: “Muchos se admiran que nuestros niños sean tan educados, que saluden y digan gracias, o les den la bendición porque eso no se ve mucho ahora. Para nosotros, es importante enseñar a nuestros hijos ser respetuosos y agradecidos por todo en esta vida”. “En nuestra experiencia como padres, con amor se consigue todo. Si tratamos a nuestros hijos con amor, vamos a recibir de ellos también amor y lo

expresarán a los demás. Aunque sea necesaria una corrección, nunca será un motivo de gritos o peleas porque todo es hecho con cariño”. “Como padres también recibimos enseñanzas de nuestros hijos. Ellos nos enseñan a ser humildes, a ser sensibles de nuestro alrededor, a ver lo material como algo necesario para vivir pero no el centro de nuestra vida. Con ellos hemos aprendido que hay dos cosas que tienen mucho valor: la salud y los sueños”.

EFECTO EN LA COMUNIDAD

Fue el brillo en los ojos de Sebastián y su convicción para lograr su sueño de ser Presidente lo que motivó a un grupo de “Angelitos de Amor” como les llama la Sra. Maria Fernanda, a llevar las historias de sus dos hijos a la Ciudad de Doral. Estos niños han movido los corazones a tal punto, que se encontró tiempo y espacio en las apretadas agendas de todos para unirse en esta noble causa, tal como lo señala Claudia Mariaca miembro del PTSA de la escuela John I. Increasing Academic Success in Florida through Broadband Access By Sandra Ruiz Councilwoman, City of Doral, Florida

recent report released at the Building a GradNation Summit in Washington, D.C. found Florida’s 75 percent graduation rate is about five percentage points lower than the nationwide average – tied with four others states for the fifth lowest graduation rate. However, progress has been made as about 60 percent of students graduated in 2006 thanks in large part to the increased adoption of broadband Internet.

Broadband connectivity has the potential to transform education by allowing students access to state-of-the-art learning resources and technologies that can better equip them to become proficient in reading at an early age. Unfortunately, many families with school age children, particularly in lowincome and minority communities, still lack adequate access. Studies show that students who are proficient in reading by the end of third grade are much more likely to graduate from high school and be economically successful as adults. The Annie E. Casey Foundation found reading proficiency numbers are the worst among minority communities: 83 percent of African American fourth graders do not meet proficiency standards, while 81 percent of Hispanic children fall short. As a result, African American, Hispanic, and low-income students represent the largest populations of entering college freshmen who require remedial courses. In fact, 64.7 percent of low-income students who are enrolled in a two-year college and 31.9 percent enrolled in a four-year college will require remediation. This is a cycle that will continue unless we put an end to the digital divide and equip all of our communities with access to high-speed broadband service. Through the introduction of programs such as Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which provides low-income families with low-cost broadband connections and the option to purchase computers at a significantly reduced rate, we are making progress within our communities. In the State of Florida, this program has connected more than 160,000 low-income Floridians – of which nearly 120,000 reside in the South Florida area. Through these types of industry efforts, students are being given the opportunity to join the digital age and stand on equal footing with their peers across the country. As a public servant I would like to applaud the efforts of companies like Comcast and ask that others join me in not only supporting our nation’s effort to get more families connected to high speed internet, but also reach out to others in the community with school-age children who are living without broadband connections. 014 is about to end and it is meritorious to dedicate this space to recognize the achievements and hard work that our Police Department has done in this community. These remarkable men and women demonstrate their daily commitment by conducting ethical and specialized work that seeks to provide effective community support. As expressed by the Chief of Police Don De Lucca, “I am proud to lead a team of professional law enforcement officers and civilian support staff. Our officers are encouraged to strengthen these relationships through their professionalism and dedication to the concept of Community Policing. It is within the framework of this relationship that all of our citizens enjoy greater personal safety and the quality of life that we all desire.” As De Lucca continued, this Police Department is more than a “traditional agency”. Their philosophy states that: “We are the Guardians: A shield forged by truth, valor, diversity, and reverence.” These words were fully materialized by their actions and different programs performed in 2014 in areas of protection, education and prevention: As for protection, Doral police have participated in various training classes and events to better protect the community such as training with the Miami-Dade Police Department in Field Force training, Active Shooter training at Miami International Mall, and numerous in-house training sessions as well. Recently, the police, in conjunction with other municipalities, participated in a DUI check point in order to make the streets safer. In education, they continue programs such as DARE for Drug Abuse Prevention with over 1,000 graduates; and radKIDS which trains children to resist and escape situations of violence. They offered talks about Dangers of Internet for Youth, Internet Safety for Parents, Sexting, Bullying, DUI, Personal Safety and others. On prevention, the police focused on crime prevention, working in conjunction with commercial and residential areas. The Program “Neighborhood Crime Watch” was established in 40 residential communities along with The Burglary Prevention Initiative and Commercial & Residential Security Surveys, door to door projects that attended businesses and residential in order to check security cameras and assess specific needs. Police Officers also led community events that were beneficial for integration, education, prevention and support: Pedal with Police (with over 200 cyclists), Collection Thanksgiving (donating 1,000 food bags and 500 turkeys), Child Safety Fair, National Night Out, Bike to School Day, Career Day Presentations, Annual Field & Sports Day and the Police Explorer group. Doral Family Journal on behalf of all Doral residents expresses gratitude and pride to all officers for their continued dedication and professionalism.

vísperas de culminar un año más, es meritorio dedicar este espacio a reconocer los logros y arduo trabajo que el Departamento de Policía ha realizado en esta comunidad. Estos hombres y mujeres demuestran cada día su compromiso llevando a cabo un trabajo ético y especializado que busca brindar apoyo comunitario efectivo. Como lo expresa el Jefe de la Policía, Don De Lucca “Estoy orgulloso de dirigir un equipo muy profesional de agentes y personal de apoyo, que goza de una fuerte relación con los ciudadanos de Doral y su comunidad empresarial. Alentamos a nuestros oficiales a fortalecer estas relaciones a través de su profesionalismo y dedicación. Es en esta relación que todos los ciudadanos disfrutan de una mayor seguridad personal y la calidad de vida que todos deseamos”. El departamento de policía, como continua De Lucca, es más que “una agencia tradicional”. Pues como dicen en su filosofía: “Somos guardianes. Estas palabras se materializan a cabalidad en sus acciones y los distintos programas realizados en el 2014 en áreas de protección, educación y prevención: En cuanto a protección, los oficiales participaron en diversos cursos de formación y eventos de seguridad. Junto a los Policías de Miami-Dade tomaron entrenamientos sobre habilidades de fuerza de campo y tiro, así como otras capacitaciones internas. Recientemente, junto con otros municipios la policía participó en un puesto de control de DUI para asegurar el transito seguro. En el sector de educación, continuaron los programas como DARE para la prevención de abuso de Drogas con más de 1.000 alumnos graduados; y radKIDS que entrena niños a resistir y escapar de situaciones de violencia. Se dictaron charlas sobre: Los peligros de Internet para Jóvenes, Seguridad en Internet para Padres, Sexting, Acoso Escolar, Seguridad Personal, DUI, entre otros. Por la parte de prevención, la Policía se enfocó en la prevención del crimen de la mano al área comercial y residencial. Se estableció el programa de “Monitoreo Criminal” en 40 comunidades residenciales y gracias a los programas: Prevención de Alarmas, y Encuestas Comerciales y Residenciales, se realizaron incontables visitas a comercios y comunidades con el fin de revisar cámaras de seguridad, evaluar necesidades puntuales para ofrecer orientación práctica. No se pude dejar de lado los eventos de integración comunitaria que a la vez sirvieron para educar, prevenir y apoyar a la ciudad: Pedaleando con la Policía (con más de 200 ciclistas), Colecta de Acción de Gracias (donando 1,000 cestas de comidas y 500 pavos), ‘Child Safety Fair’, ‘National Night Out’, ‘Bike to School Day’, ‘Career Day Presentatons”, el ‘Annual Field & Sports Day’ y el grupo de jóvenes ‘Police Explorer Group’. iami is considered a vacation paradise and a top tourist destination for its beautiful beaches, wide range of shopping malls, cultural diversity and its exciting night life. It has also become one of the cities with the highest real estate demand in the United States. The real estate market in south Florida particularly in Miami is increasingly attracting foreigners for its investment value and as possible destination to migrate, while for the American market this city is the perfect combination between an ideal weather and lower property taxes than in other locations. This preference for real estate investment in Miami is supported by figures from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), which show that in the Sunshine city, the sale of single family homes increased from 7 thousand 728 in 2008 to 14 thousand 914 in 2013 (92.9%), and during this time the sale of condominiums increased from 8 thousand 215 to 19 thousand 914 (142%). Regarding prices, the NAR considers there has been a significant recovery, as real estate has reached the point where it was ten years ago. For January 2014, the average cost of a family home in Miami was around 225 thousand dollars, which represents a 16% increase compared to January 2013. When carrying out the same comparison regarding residential condominiums, we observe a 24.4% increase, with an average price of 186 thousand dollars. When comparing the figures from the NAR, to those of the State of Florida and along the United States, we may also observe positive results for Miami, where single family homes cost an average 225 thousand dollars, while in the rest of the State these type of properties reach an average price of 162 thousand 500 dollars, and 188 thousand 900

Activities and Sports develop the Bison Spirit By Maria Alejandra Pulgar

he development of a good relationship between school, parents and students is a main component of a successful educational experience. And part of that experience comes from the enthusiast participation of parents and students on the different activities the school organizes. That participation develops a sense of belonging, an identification that allows parents and students to love and care for their school. That sense of belonging is what is called School Spirit. In Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, that school spirit, the Bison Spirit, is nurtured by the Athletics and the Activities departments. Slowly but steadily through the years, Head Coach Carlos Pérez, Mr. Stephen Morejón (SCSI Coordinator and Athletics Business Manager) and Ms. Ashley Noffo (Activities Director), along with the school administration, have worked to establish all sorts of activities and events to get the community to participate in the school, and they are succeeding in their efforts. Along with that community participation, the success of the students in the different sports raises their enthusiasm and pride with the results. A school that excels not only in academics and arts but also in sports, is a school that produces well rounded and successful graduates and gains more prestige within the district, the state and the country, and that is the kind of educational experience students obtain at RRDSH.

“I enjoy coming to work every day. The kids keep me young” says Coach Carlos Perez smiling. A beloved figure within school campus Perez, who has been teaching for 42 years, is the Head Coach at RRDSH since it opened its doors in 2006. He tries “always to stay positive, active and involved in all school activities” to inspire and motivate the kids to participate. He is very proud of the results all Bison teams had during fall season and looks forward to the winter sports that are just starting. They obtained great results in volleyball, bowling, swimming and football and now the winter season will include cross country, basketball, soccer and wrestling, among others. “Some sports are winding down, some are peaking but there is always a lot of sport activity in the school”.

That is what High School is all about: sports, clubs, performances, everything!” concluded Coach Perez. Perez explains that there are several pre-season classics or exhibition matches that allow the teams to warm up for the qualification tournaments and he encourages parents and community members as well as the student body to come to all games and support their teams, to foster school spirit. He wants the community to see the effort the students made to defend their school´s colors. “Get involved! The team is not only those on the field, it is The Herd, everybody! Somebody leads, somebody plays and everybody else cheers!” Coach Perez also explains that High School sports are very competitive and that students that want to try out for sports at school should try to start practicing before 9th grade in order to be ready for competitions representing their school. “The coaches will pick the best for their teams. It does not mean we are depriving a kid of playing, they can still play recreational at parks or leagues, but as far as school goes we want to win as much as anybody else. If they have never played before

GET THE BISON FEVER

The teamed up efforts of the Athletics and Activities departments make the foundations to foster the school spirit. Ashley Noffo, the Activities Director, is in charge of coordinating all extracurricular events and clubs and works hand in hand with Esteban Morejón, the Athletics Business Manager, to align all activities in order to attract more public and increase participation. “We want the parents to come and see the great things their kids are doing in the classrooms, sports and extracurricular activities”, says Morejón, who also runs the Discipline program SCSI at the school. “We had a great turnout during Senior Parent Night and Freshman Orientation. It helps the parents see all that their kids can do at the school. That is when parents and children start to get the ´Bison Fever´.” Ms. Noffo goes beyond that and invites members of all other schools in the area to also participate on the community events and activities they organize throughout the year that are open to the public. “This is a tight-knit community and we want them to know the school and the traditions. We want the parents to encourage their kids to attend the events that happen here: games, performances of the band and chorus. High School is a truly unique experience and they should be involved from the beginning.” By encouraging their children to participate, the parents will better assimilate and understand the American High School culture that and it will ease their fears on the transition from middle school. Because as Mr. Morejón puts it “you only do high school once” and it is a experience for the children as well as for parents to enjoy and treasure.

na experiencia educativa exitosa se basa en la buena relación entre la escuela, los padres y los estudiantes. Y parte de esa experiencia proviene de la participación entusiasta de todos en las actividades que organice la escuela. Esa participación desarrolla una sensación de pertenencia que permite que los padres y estudiantes tengan amor y aprecio por su escuela. Esa sensación de pertenencia es lo que se llama el “Espíritu Escolar”. En Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, el espíritu escolar, el “Espíritu del Bisote” se nutre de las actividades organizadas por los departamentos de Deportes y de Actividades Extracurriculares, quienes a través de los años y bajo la dirección de la administración de la escuela y del Coach Principal Carlos Pérez, el Sr. Stephen Morejón (Coordinador de SCSI y gerente de Deportes) y la Srta. Ashley Noffo (Directora de Actividades Extracurriculares), han trabajado para establecer eventos que promuevan la participación de la comunidad en la escuela. El éxito de los estudiantes en los deportes ha traído entusiasmo y orgullo a la escuela. Una escuela que se destaca no solamente en los resultados académicos sino también artísticos y deportivos es una escuela que produce estudiantes integrales y exitosos, que incrementan su prestigio. LOS DEPORTES EN SECUNDARIA SON MUY SERIOS

“Disfruto mi trabajo, los muchachos me mantienen joven”, dice Coach Carlos Pérez con una sonrisa. Su presencia es querida y respetada en el campus. Pérez ha trabajado en educación por 42 años y es el Coach Principal de RRDSH desde que abrió sus puertas en 2006. “Siempre trato de mantenerme positivo, activo e involucrado en todas las actividades de la escuela” dice Pérez, quien con su ejemplo inspira y motiva también a sus estudiantes a participar activamente. Está muy orgulloso de los resultados de la temporada de otoño obtenidos por los equipos de Bisontes y espera con emoción los deportes de invierno. “Algunos deportes ya están terminando e inician otros, pero siempre hay mucha actividad en las canchas de RRDSH”. Pérez aprovecha la oportunidad para invitar a los

Ese es el espíritu del Bisonte.” Coach Pérez explica que la participación en los deportes en secundaria es un asunto serio y muy competido y recomienda a los padres y estudiantes que traten de aprender el deporte antes de llegar a noveno grado para poder estar listos para las pruebas, pues los entrenadores eligen a los mejores para que compitan representando a la escuela. “Con ello no queremos descorazonar a otros estudiantes, pero si les recomiendo que jueguen a nivel recreacional en los parques y otras ligas antes de llegar a la secundaria para que puedan estar a la altura de las competencias. Las pruebas son muy fuertes. Sin embargo, si no entran en el equipo en el noveno grado, sigan practicando e intentando. La persistencia trae el éxito y deben intentar de nuevo al año siguiente. Hay deportes para todos en RRDSH.” “Esto no es un programa de cuidado después de la escuela. Son deportes de competencia y si los muchachos se destacan pueden tener posibilidades de seguir jugando a nivel universitario. Todo comienza en el hogar. Si los muchachos le dicen a

El esfuerzo mancomunado entre los departamentos de Actividades y de Deportes son la base del Espíritu Escolar. Ashley Noffo, la Directora de Actividades, está a cargo de coordinar todos los extracurriculares (paseos, eventos, presentaciones, graduación, fiestas, clubes, etc.) Ella trabaja en equipo con Esteban Morejón, el Administrador Deportivo, para promover que actividades y deportes se realicen de manera coordinada para atraer más público y aumentar la participación. “Deseamos que los padres asistan y puedan ver todas las cosas que sus hijos hacen en las clases, deportes y clubes” explica Morejón, quien también está a cargo del programa de disciplina de la escuela. “En la Noche de orientación para los Senior y para los Freshmen, tuvimos una gran participación de los padres. Fueron un gran éxito. Eso ayuda a los padres a conocer mejor su escuela y todas las actividades en que sus hijos pueden participar. Allí los padres y los hijos comienzan a contagiarse de lo que yo llamo la ´Fiebre del Bisonte´.” Noffo va mas allá e invita a todos los miembros de las otras escuelas de la zona a que también participen en los eventos que sean abiertos a toda la comunidad, como las presentaciones artísticas y otras actividades que se organizan en el año.”Esta es una comunidad muy unida y queremos que conozcan la escuela y aprendan las tradiciones de la secundaria. Que los padres estimulen a sus hijos a participar y apoyar a sus otros compañeros cuando se presenten con la banda o el coro o en los juegos. La Secundaria es una experiencia única y sería muy lindo que se involucren desde el principio.” Al estimular a sus hijos a que participen, también los padres pueden asimilar y comprender mejor la cultura de las Secundarias Americanas y esto les puede ayudar a superar sus temores en la transición desde la escuela intermedia. Morejón concluye diciendo que “la secundaria es la mejor época de la vida y sucede solo una vez. Es una experiencia para disfrutar y atesorar, tanto los padres como los hijos.”

El programa de After School en este fin de año, realizará una presentación estilo “Clase Abierta” en las instalaciones del colegio para darle a conocer a los padres el progreso que han obtenido los niños

De la mano de nuestro director musical y cabeza del programa de música de Shelton Academy y Shelton Academy After School, David Velez nos trae este hermoso regalo musical cargado de ternura y diversión. Con más de 250 niños en escena, el público asistente al Miami Dade County Auditorium se remontará al “Lejano Oeste” donde se narrará la más divertida de las historias. “Los residentes del pueblo “Snowy Gulch” se preparan para celebrar la navidad con su festival anual “OK Corral”. Bubble Gum Bart, quien se encuentra completamente abrumado con toda la algarabía y felicidad que invade a la ciudad trata de detener la celebración amenazando con cubrir todo el pueblo con goma de mascar”. Entre canciones, y hermosas presentaciones de los niños de The Joy Of Learning, Shelton Academy Elementary and Upper Academy esta obra musical garantiza a los espectadores una noche cargada de diversión. Esta obra es el primer musical que presenta el colegio y espera que sea un éxito rotundo. Toda la escenografía, montaje, y coreografía han sido creados y realizados por los niños de Shelton

a llegó la Navidad! La época de celebrar el nacimiento del niño Jesús, época de festividades y unión familiar, pero también época en la que se acostumbra hacer regalos a nuestros seres queridos. Cuando pensamos en regalar, nos topamos con la gran pregunta: ¿Qué le regalo?.... Pensamos en nuestros padres, esposos, hermanos y suegros pero sobretodo en nuestros hijos. Si tenemos más de un niño en la casa probablemente tienen diferentes edades, gustos e intereses. Hoy día existen muchos adelantos de la tecnología y es muy natural ver niños de todas las edades con tabletas electrónicas, computadoras, juegos de video y equipos de reproducción de música, entre otras cosas. El tratar de agradar a todos puede ser estresante en especial a nuestros hijos adolescentes. Si pidiéramos ayuda, con tantos Súper Héroes no sabríamos a quien recurrir. Así que como diría el famoso recién fallecido comediante, Roberto Gómez Bolaños “Chespirito”, en su personaje del Chapulín Colorado… ¿Y Ahora Quien Podrá Ayudarme? Si tenemos hijos adolescentes la tarea se convierte en una misión casi imposible. Cada etapa del desarrollo es diferente y los intereses van cambiando con la edad. Aún cuando deberíamos tener una idea más clara de qué regalar, usualmente es una tarea complicada por varios factores. Entre estos se encuentra el factor dinero que en muchas ocasiones no es suficiente para regalarles todo lo que desean. Nuestros hijos nos piden desde lo que ven en el televisor hasta lo que sus amigos tienen. Todo sería más fácil que desearan como regalo lo que “El Chavo Del 8” añoraba más, una torta de jamón! Pero esa no es la realidad. Gracias a Dios muchas familias tienen de todo y otras desean tener solo lo necesario. Con esto en mente, antes de comprar juguetes nuevos podríamos escoger los que están en buena condición y junto a nuestros hijos podríamos donarlos a alguna entidad caritativa, hospital o iglesia. Así enseñamos a nuestros hijos lo hermoso que es compartir con los más necesitados.

Así que tomando en cuenta las diferentes edades, aquí algunas recomendaciones de regalos adecuados, educativos y que ayudan a estimular el desarrollo. O a 6 meses - Ropa, juguetes para estimular los sentidos como maracas suaves de colores brillantes, juguetes con música o juguetes de goma para ayudar con la dentición. 6 meses a 2 años - Gimnasio para actividad física, rompecabezas de letras, colores o formas, bloques para estimulación visual motora y coordinación, libros de cubierta suave. 3 a 7 años - Juegos de mesa para estimular la cognición (contar, adivinanzas, memoria, atención y concentración). Bicicletas, artículos para jugar su deporte favorito, instrumentos musicales, manualidades (plasticina, pintar o dibujar), juegos de patio para estimular la actividad física y la coordinación motora.

8 a 12 años - Clases de música, baile, deportes (natación, futbol/soccer, baseball, basketball, karate etc.). Ropa de su equipo favorito, libros de su interés, equipo de arte, equipos para construir carros o edificios, para hacer joyerías, cerámica, ropa, jabones, repostería entre otros.

12 a 16 años - Accesorios de joyería (relojes, pulseras, aretes), certificados de regalos (para bajar música “iTunes”, para juegos de video o para el cine, entre otros), equipos de ciencia, patinetas, ropa de su equipo favorito o equipo para hacer algún deporte. En fin, es importante hacer la búsqueda de los regalos navideños con tiempo y sobre todo mantener la calma, que para conseguir el regalo perfecto para cada persona solo se necesita imaginación y amor.

ometime the best way to show true thanksgiving is to give. We are in the midst of a beautiful time of the year, when families make time to get together and enjoy each other; while our streets are getting lined with lights and the essence of the holidays starts to surround us. This is a time when we thrive on tradition and we draw joy from the closeness of friends and loved ones. Yet, this is also a time of great sorrow for those that because of the distance, lack of resources or difficult circumstances, are not able to ‘celebrate’ in the same way. Many of these are service men and women who are apart from their homeland and families; veterans that are dealing with sickness, joblessness, or issues reintegrating to society; or military families struggling to make ends meet. In this time to give thanks and to celebrate the holidays, let’s stop to consider the needs of the members of our military community. Let’s draw joy from extending a hand in service and giving to those in need. As chairman of the Military Affairs Board and Military Liaison for Miami-Dade County, I urge to keep these families in your thoughts as well as to join us as we find ways to help. The Military Affairs Board has a commitment to promote, attract and solicit military activities in Miami-Dade County, as well as advocate on behalf of military personnel on issues like health care, housing loans, pension benefits, education, employment, unemployment benefits, disability claims, vocational training and insurance.

This past thanksgiving weekend, we were able to help put together a toy drive for “Toys for Tots” were both the Marines, as well as Radio Lollipop were able to receive hundreds and hundreds of toys for needy children. Even though the event was put together in a short time, our community came out and showed their gratitude with God and life by joyfully giving those toys and gathering for a day of celebration for the entire family. I want to personally thank Bobby Lopez and Ralph Usatorres from Cartel Baggers Motorcycles, Luis Fernandez, Rene Sardiñas and DJ Laz , as well as every person that volunteered and attended the event, for making this happen and I look forward to doing an even greater event next year! Winter Wonderland Extravaganza at Kendall Regional

The 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland Extravaganza at Kendall Regional Medical Center was attended by more than 5,000, as the hospital welcomed the children and families of the community to this holiday festivity. Children had an opportunity to play in the snow, write letters to Santa, make holiday crafts and have their photo taken with Santa (while telling him what they wanted for Christmas). Also, everyone had the opportunity to enjoy holiday musical entertainment by different local schools. Hot chocolate with marsh mellows and Christmas cookies were served to the delight of all.

Ya es Navidad en Doral!! Al menos ese es el ambiente que reina en la ciudad desde que se encendiera el tradicional árbol de Navidad frente al Centro de Gobierno el pasado 5 de diciembre. Sus luces se convirtieron en el epicentro de la inauguración navideña de nuestra ciudad, ante centenares de asistentes, quienes además vieron llegar a Santa Claus con su escolta policial para dar inicio a la ceremonia junto a los oficiales electos. Este divertido evento familiar fue una maravillosa manera de comenzar el espíritu de las fiestas. Además, el 6 de diciembre, la Ciudad de Doral ofreció su desayuno anual con Santa en el Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School. Esto le permitió a los niños entregar personalmente su carta a Santa!

Doral Parents & Educators first Annual PTA/ PTSA Open Forum & Appreciation Breakfast On Thursday December 11th, there was the celebration of the first annual City of Doral’s Schools PTA/PTSA Open Forum and Appreciation Breakfast, invited by Councilwoman Christi Fraga and sponsored by Laserland

and Adventure and Doral Family Journal. The forum included participation the City of Doral Police Department and educational institutions to promote communication between parents, school administrators, and government in the hope of finding additional ways in which the City of Doral can assist with the goals of educators, students and parents. It was an special occasion dedicated to say Thank you and recognized all the hardwork and dedication of PTA’s volunteers.

Bazar Navideño en RECS

Como en años anteriores, se realizó el tradicional Bazar Navideño del Renaissance Elementary & Middle Charter School, el pasado 6 de diciembre, en el que el espíritu navideño se coló por todos los rincones… Los estudiantes realizaron excelentes shows, y tanto los padres como los mas pequeños, cantaron villancicos, bailaron y tocaron instrumentos, a la vez que encontraban otras actividades de entretenimiento, comida y mucho mas!
