Doral recibe certificación Platinum de la WCCD Doral es la cuarta ciudad de Estados Unidos en recibir está certificación, uniéndose a una red mundial de más de 50 localidades.

or ser considerada un región inteligente, sostenible y próspera, Doral recibió la certificación Platinum ISO 37120 del Concejo Mundial de Datos de Ciudades (WCCD, por sus siglas inglés), institución que alberga una red de ciudades innovadoras, comprometidas con la mejora de sus servicios y la calidad de vida sus habitantes. Así lo dio a conocer el Desarrollador Económico de la Ciudad de Doral, Manuel Pila, quien informó que obtener esta certificación nos convierte en la cuarta ciudad de Estados Unidos en pertenecer a esta red mundial de la WCCD, junto a Boston, San Diego y Los Angeles. “De esta forma, Doral se une a las más de 50 ciudades en todo el mundo que conforman este grupo, bajo el objetivo común de avanzar juntas en el aprendizaje creativo, las alianzas internacionales, el desarrollo académico, la innovación, la visualización de futuros alternativos y la construcción de ciudades mejores y más habitables”.

CIUDADES SOSTENIBLES

Explicó Pila que para pertenecer a este selecto grupo y obtener la Platinum ISO 37120, Doral debió y debe cumplir con 100 indicadores, resumidos en las siguientes áreas: economía, educación, energía, medio ambiente, finanzas, respuesta ante emergencias, gobierno, salud, seguridad, recreación, protección, desechos sólidos, telecomunicaciones, planificación urbana, aguas residuales, transporte y saneamiento del agua. Pila suministró algunos ejemplos de los aspectos de las ciudades que son tomados en cuenta dentro de estos indicadores como, índice de empleo y desempleo, valor estimado de las propiedades, porcentaje de la población que vive en pobreza, número de estudiantes que culminan su educación y cantidad de residentes con servicio eléctrico. También se puede mencionar la cantidad de bomberos y policías por cada 100 mil habitantes, número de homicidios por cada 100 mil residentes, la participación de votantes en las últimas elecciones municipales, el promedio de expectativa de vida, cantidad de médicos por cada 100 mil habitantes y porcentaje

de población viviendo en suburbios. Otros aspectos que son evaluados son el porcentaje de la población con servicio de recolección de basura, cantidad de conexiones a internet por cada 100 mil habitantes, número anual de viajes en transporte público y de personas con vehículo propio, cantidad de áreas verdes por 100 mil habitantes y porcentaje de la población con servicio de agua potable. “Como líder global de mediciones estandarizadas, el WCCD implementó estos indicadores para las comunidades que permiten evaluar los servicios municipales y la calidad de vida, por lo que nos orgullece que Doral haya recibido la más alta de estas certificaciones, la Platinum, por cumplir entre 91 y 100 de estos indicadores.”, agregó Pila. Estos indicadores estandarizados permiten a las ciudades evaluar y comparar sus rendimientos a escala local e internacional, incentivan la creación de gobiernos más efectivos y con servicios más eficientes, permiten la toma de decisiones basadas en la evidencia, proporcionan un marco para la sostenibilidad y la resiliencia, propician la evaluación comparativa local e internacional, fomentan el aprendizaje comparativo y el intercambio de soluciones y ayudan a explorar opciones para atraer inversiones. El objetivo de la WCCD es globalizar el uso de datos estandarizados que permitan realizar evaluaciones y comparaciones certeras. Es por esta razón que, en mayo del 2014, se implementó el ISO 37120 por la Organización Internacional de Estandarización (ISO). El ISO 37120 define y establece metodologías para una comprensión integral del conjunto de indicadores que permitirán a cualquier ciudad rastrear y medir su rendimiento social, económico y ambiental, en relación con otras ciudades. Manuel Pila señala que obtener esta certificación fue un compromiso del departamento de informática de la Ciudad de Doral, a cargo de Gladys González, sin embargo, el apoyo brindado por todas las direcciones de la alcaldía, así como por el condado de Miami-Dade en las áreas de incendios, medio ambiente, desperdicios sólidos, agua y saneamiento, fue indispensable para recopilar los datos para la presentación de

Esta certificación Platinum ISO 37120 también es compartida por ciudades como Dubai, Amsterdam, Melbourne y Barcelona. Doral on its Way to Become Doral en camino a convertirse en un “paraíso an “Orchid Paradise” de las orquídeas”

n October 20th, the City of Doral embarked on the “Million Orchid Project” with Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, braving the heights to plant the very first orchids in Downtown Doral Park. The goal is for Doral to eventually become an orchid paradise with thousands blooming in its streets and parks. This is a partnership between several municipalities and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to help re-introduce native orchids species to the existing canopy across the Miami-Dade County urban areas. With their guidance and support, the Doral Public Works team will handle initial plantings. Then volunteers will take over and help the re-population continue. Multiple events will be held annually at different locations in the City to get the community involved in this effort. “I personally feel very strongly about projects like these that get our community involved”, said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “When our residents take ownership and participate, it results in Doral pride – something that helps maintain our quality of life in this great city.” This priority, in line with the “Green Goals” in the City’s Green Master Plan, which will help keep Doral beautiful and a place where our families can enjoy to live, work, learn and play in. l pasado 20 de octubre, la ciudad de Doral se embarcó en el “Million Orchid Project” con el alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez y la concejal Claudia Mariaca, desafiando las alturas con el fin de plantar las primeras orquídeas en el Downtown Doral Park. La meta del Doral es de convertirse eventualmente en el paraíso de las orquídeas con miles de estas floreciendo en sus calles y parques. Esta idea es un consorcio celebrado entre varias municipalidades y el jardín “Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden” para presentar una vez más las especies de orquídeas nativas en la cresta forestal que cruza la zona urbana del condado de Miami-Dade. Con el apoyo y la guía del equipo de obras públicas de la ciudad del Doral, el cual se encargará de que las plantaciones iniciales sean posibles gracias a los voluntarios que eventualmente se encargarán de tomar la iniciativa y ayudar a la continuación de la repoblación de las orquídeas. Creating healthier spaces

The NW 58th street corridor could be named as an environmental recovery area

Through the “Brownfield” Redevelopment Program, this area could be turned into an environmentally healthy area.

ne of the objectives of the Planning and Zoning Department of the City of Doral is to have the NW58th Street corridor designated as an area of environmental recovery within the “Brownfield” Redevelopment Act. Julian Perez, Director of this department explained that the “Brownfield” Redevelopment Act trains communities, local governments and other organizations that are interested in environmental development, in the prevention, evaluation, cleanup and reuse of abandoned parcels, taking into account that these parcels can suffer from perceived or real contamination during the expansion, development or reuse of the property. “We are requesting the City Council to approve the designation of this geographic area, with nearly 260 acres of land, with more than 220 industrial and small commercial properties, as an environmental recovery area,” states Perez; he also adds that this area is located within close proximity to major regional highways, the Miami International Airport, the Metrorail station and several residential areas and Downtown Doral.

“We could also add to this that we are anticipating the buildout of several mixed-use projects (residential and commercial) along Doral Boulevard (NW 36th street) and the potential development of the Pepsi property, all of which will serve as a catalyst to start the redevelopment of this area in the future, this gives this corridor a huge importance because it is close to sectors in the NW 54th and NW 41st streets, and NW 87th and NW 79th Avenues, and to SR826.” When he speaks about the environmental aspect of this area, Perez states that it can pose several challenges due to its past and the actual industrial uses that it has. “It has a diverse mix of industrial

businesses, boat, truck and heavy equipment repairs, among others. It also comprises storage, gas stations, car garages, dry cleaning businesses, printers and many other uses that can be considered light industrial.” It is normal that many of these companies use dangerous chemical products in their daily operations, these can pollute the soil or the underground waters in case of an accidental leakage. The most dangerous substances or solid waste that are generated in this area can include for example, petroleum products, chlorinated solvents, residual oil, PCB, arsenic, lead, chromium and cadmium. According to the reports from the Department of Planning and Zoning, we also know that in the area there might be municipal waste and/or construction and demolition debris buried, and these can generate ammonia, iron and methane as additional pollutants, that will impact the redevelopment, reuse and expansion activities in the area. These are some of the reasons to recommend that the corridor along NW 58th street be designated as an environmental recovery area, as part of the Brownfield program, which was created to achieve environmental rehabilitation, job creation and economic development through redevelopment. The main goals of the Brownfield Redevelopment Act are the reduction of environmental and public health risks due to pollution, to create financial incentives and to regulate the voluntary cleanup and restructure the areas to promote environmental fairness. Perez let us know that the Brownfield Redevelopment Act of the State of Florida provides both public and private sectors with a variety of financial and regulatory benefits to facilitate the environmental cleanup and reuse of properties with environmental challenges. “For example, if a property is approved for remediation of its environmental deficiencies, it would be eligible for tax credit due to voluntary cleanup and environmental protection, under State Law. These incentives are only available to institutions that agree

to enter into a Brownfield Site Remediation Agreement (BSRA) with the Department of Environmental Protection of the State of Florida.” With a BSRA, a portion of the costs incurred in the cleanup and redevelopment could be recovered. “A property owner could be eligible to receive Voluntary Cleanup Tax Credits (VCTC), in the amount of 75% to 100% of all the costs incurred for valuation and remediation of the area.” Julian Perez recalled that last year the City of Doral was selected to receive a Tax Credit for five hundred thousand dollars as recoup of the investment incurred in the cleanup of the parcel that is today Doral Legacy Park, located at the NW 114th Avenue of the city. The designation of the NW 58th Street corridor as an Environmental Recovery area is part of the goal to create more Green areas within our city, it will be presented in Second Reading in the City of Doral on November 15th, 2017.

Doral concludes Hurricane Irma’s debris removal

t took less than two months for the City of Doral to conclude the process of debris removal and disposal after Hurricane Irma. It is a luck that other municipalities in the County have lacked. The closeness of Doral to the Waste Management facility in Medley allowed for an agreement with that company for the disposal of debris at their landfill on a cost per ton basis. It was the closest, most economic FEMA approved landfill. Disposing waste properly contributes to the protection of South Florida environment and sustainability. Waste Management operates the largest integrated solid waste disposal systems in the country, and continually works with communities to lower costs and create safer environments for businesses and residents.

Debris removal contractors were in charge of hauling everything to the Waste Management facility from Doral Central Park, where it had been collected and processed after the initial cleaning phases. The hauling process concluded on October 27 and allowed for the park to resume operation the same day, after Public Works and Parks and Recreation restored the used area. The proactivity of the City of Doral as part of their emergency preparations allowed for it to have on standby, in case of need, the three most convenient and cost effective contractors that complied with FEMA requirements, since the procurement process that took place in 2013. “Having three debris removal contracts in place helps make sure that the City has the resources to attend an emergency in the event one of the contractors cannot respond. Furthermore, having existing contracts in place helps ensure a prompt response to the emergency as the procurement process can be very time consuming. Doral le tomó menos de dos meses concluir la remoción y desecho de escombros después del huracán Irma. Es una suerte que no han tenido otras municipalidades del Condado Miami-Dade. La cercanía con el relleno sanitario de Waste Management ubicado en Medley ayudó a lograr un acuerdo con esa compañía para el desecho de los escombros, con costos basados en toneladas trasladadas. Esta es la instalación de relleno sanitario más cercana y más económica aprobada por FEMA Disponer de los desechos adecuadamente contribuye a la protección del ambiente y sostenibilidad en el Sur de Florida. Waste Management opera el sistema integrado más grande de manejo de desechos sólidos en todo el país. La compañía trabaja continuamente con las comunidades para bajar los costos y crear ambientes seguros para los negocios y los residentes. Los contratistas de remoción de escombros se encargaron de llevar todos los desechos de Doral hasta la facilidad de Waste Management desde Doral Central Park, utilizado como centro de acopio y procesamiento en las etapas de limpieza iniciales. arents are always concerned about the quality of education they are providing for their children. Education is the key to open future opportunities, achieve stability, obtain good income and succeed in life. But, what happens when the education system available fails to comply with those expectations? In recent years there has been an increase of anxiety cases among children and teenagers, due to the excessive amount of requirements they need to fulfill and live up to the expectations of parents and society, including completing tons of homework and projects, excelling on standardized tests, achieving high grades at school, practicing competitive sports and getting involved with the arts, while developing social responsibility

projects that change the world. That recipe is believed to guarantee the child a place on the coveted list of a high performing college and, with luck, a full ride scholarship. Once in college, those demands quadruplicate, more over if they attend a top tier university, where competition and challenging subjects, plus the burden of working hard to keep a scholarship or the fact that they are taking hefty student loan debts end up taking a toll on the student emotional health. While their children work towards their future, involved parents stress out working hard to save money to pay for college and making sure their children receive all the “concerted cultivation” needed to ensure their success. On the other hand, teachers and schools try to cater to every children’s learning needs while preparing them to ace the standardized tests, which will provide a scientific

measure of the quality of education they are delivering, and many times the results obtained determine better wages, bonuses and resources for the teachers and the schools. The story is different on lower income communities, where survival skills and priorities at home take precedence over concerted cultivation, and public schools in many cases perform below the expectations due to the lack of resources. However, at the same time this turmoil happens at schools and homes, society is evolving and the needs and skills that were required to find a job in the 90s are not the same the World Economic Forum is projecting for 2020. In the majority of schools in the country the education is failing to prepare students for that challenge. Excessive homework and standardized tests are not the problem but the symptoms. Teachers need to send home part of the workload for the children to cover content, while they devote instructional time to prepare their students for testing, time they would have loved to use on sharing their knowledge and nurturing children; Schools need students to perform well on those tests so they can continue receiving funds to maintain or enhance the educational programs; and students need to excel to fulfill the requirements that will help them access to better educational options. It is a never ending cycle of overworked teachers, overwhelmed students and stressed parents. Parents, teachers and government have to work together on the herculean task of modifying and enhancing the system, aligning it with the needs the future holds for society.

THE “FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION” AND THE 2020 SKILLS

The fundamentals of the current Education System, with separation by age, grades and subjects and lengthy lectures were introduced in Massachusetts in the 1840s by Horace Mann, state Secretary of Education at the time. The system was based on the “Prussian model” of common schools, where all students in a grade level received the same content, regardless of their location, interest, aptitudes and needs. It is a model created to “turn unruly children into disciplined, judicious citizens”, prepared to follow instructions, ideal to perform at

factories that opened after the Industrial Revolution. How can we still be educating children with an educational model more than 170 years old? Although there have been an evolution, the system still has a lot to do to catch up with the needs of society. According to Klaus Schwab, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), a Fourth Industrial Revolution, based on the use of information technology and electronics to automate production, “is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres.” It is within this digital revolution that today’s children are going to live their productive lives, and they have to develop the skills to succeed on it. The ten most important skills people will need by 2020 are: (Source: World Economic Forum “Future of Jobs Report”) 1. Complex problem-solving, the capacity to solve problems never seen before in real-world settings. 2. Critical thinking, Logic and reasoning. 3. Creativity, the ability to come up with new ideas based on information. 4. People management. 5. Coordinating with others: collaboration and interpersonal skills. 6. Emotional intelligence and social skills. 7. Judgement and decision-making, the capacity to analyze data and come up with effective conclusions. 8. Service orientation, looking for ways to help people. 9. Negotiation: the ability to express points of view, listen and reach agreements. 10. Cognitive flexibility: the ability to change between different systems of thought. Those who have access to educational systems that foster those skills will be able to thrive with the new rules that world society is developing.

THE “ONE SIZE FITS ALL” SYSTEM FAILED

Creative children in the regular educational system feel miserable, and teachers do too when they cannot get those children to participate, engage and thrive. Schools expect high academic performance from children at levels like kindergarten, when providing instead activities focused more on sensory motor development, selfregulation and socialization skills would better help them obtain a good foundation for higher levels. In Spain, for example, the concept of homework is introduced gradually starting in first grade, with a limited amount per week, because it is encouraged that the child uses the free time after school to enjoy or engage in other activities such as sports, art, music, etc. Experts in the area of education consider that some

kind of daily assignment related to school work should be done at home to reinforce or “reflect” on what the child has learn during the day. However a workload of homework can be counterproductive, as it shortens the free time a child can devote to simply rest of to do other activities. The system tries to be “one size fits all” but people come with different abilities and interests. Standardized tests serve the purpose of quantification of school performance, but definitely do a disservice for children who have different learning abilities, when their lack of testtaking skills takes a toll on their personal performance, undermining their self-esteem when their results do not reach the expectations of the system.

LOCAL CHANGE IS IN PROGRESS. BE PART OF THE CONVERSATION

There have been efforts in recent years to slowly but steadily introduce changes on the current American Education System. Each state has been responsible for their initiatives, and there are places like California where education, even at university levels, has evolved to catch up with the needs of society. Florida has introduced changes too, and locally MiamiDade Public Schools System has created the Foundation for New Education Initiatives www.giveourstudentstheworld. org, with the mission of securing “supplemental funding for enhancing student achievement through innovation and community engagement.” The foundation has financed

initiatives for helping teacher, students and parents develop innovation and creativity projects. In Miami-Dade, private schools or public schools of choice, such as virtual, charter or magnet schools, are alternatives to the traditional approach. There are even public funds that can be used by parents to have access to private education through the Step Up or Mc Kay scholarships, this one for children with special needs. The organization “Educating for the 21st Century” www. edu21c.com, created by entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Dintersmith in California, provides resources and training to communities that want to spark change on their local education system. A group of Doral parents and business owners have got together to explore options to better help other parents and local schools to succeed on preparing the children on the 21st century skills. os padres se preocupan por la calidad de la educación de sus hijos, pues esta es la clave para acceder a futuras oportunidades, lograr estabilidad, buenos ingresos y tener éxito en la vida. Pero, ¿qué sucede cuando el sistema educativo falla en llenar esas expectativas? Recientemente ha habido un incremento en los casos de ansiedad en niños y adolescentes, por la cantidad excesiva de requerimientos que deben cumplir para llenar las expectativas de los padres y la sociedad, incluyendo hacer toneladas de tareas y proyectos, lograr excelentes calificaciones en los exámenes estándar, lograr altas calificaciones en la escuela, practicar deportes competitivos y además participar en arte o música, mientras realizan trabajos de responsabilidad social que cambian al mundo. Esa es la receta para lograr un cupo en una buena universidad y, con suerte, una beca completa. Una vez en la Universidad las demandas se cuadruplican, más aun si van a universidades tope, donde hay más competencia y las materias son más complicadas, además deben trabajar en mantener la beca y solicitar altísimos montos en préstamos educativos. Todo ello afecta la salud mental de los estudiantes. Mientras tanto, los padres se estresan porque deben ahorrar para pagar la universidad y además asegurarse que sus hijos hacen todas las actividades necesarias para llegar al éxito. Por otro lado, las maestras y la escuela tratan de educar y adaptarse a la manera de aprender a cada niño mientras les preparan para tomar los exámenes estándar, pues estos proveen una medida científica de la calidad de educación en la escuela y muchas veces eso determina mejores salarios, bonos y recursos. La historia es diferente en las comunidades de bajos recursos, donde la prioridad es sacar la casa adelante, en lugar de hacer actividades extra, y muchas de las escuelas públicas lamentablemente salen con evaluaciones bastante bajas por la falta de recursos. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo que esto sucede en casa y escuelas, la sociedad evoluciona y las necesidades requeridas por los empleadores en los 90s no son las mismas que las proyectadas para 2020 en el Foro Económico Mundial. La tarea excesiva y los exámenes estándar no son el problema sino los “síntomas”. Los maestros necesitan enviar parte de la carga de trabajo para la casa para que los niños cubran contenido, mientras ellos usan su tiempo instruccional para preparación para el examen, un tiempo que habrían disfrutado mucho más compartiendo sus conocimientos con sus estudiantes. Las escuelas necesitan que los estudiantes salgan bien en los exámenes, para poder continuar recibiendo

fondos para mantener o mejorar el programa educativo. Y los estudiantes deben salir muy bien para tener mejores opciones para la universidad. Es un ciclo interminable de maestras con exceso de trabajo, estudiantes preocupados y padres estresados. Los padres, maestros y gobierno, tienen a cargo la tarea de modificar y mejorar el Sistema, alineándolo con las necesidades del futuro en la sociedad.

LA “CUARTA REVOLUCIÓN INDUSTRIAL” Y LOS TALENTOS 2020

Las bases del sistema educativo, con la separación por grado, mes y materias, fueron introducidas en Massachusetts en 1840s por Horace Mann, Secretario de Educación estatal. Es un modelo creado para “transformar niños desobedientes en ciudadanos juiciosos y disciplinados”, preparados para seguir instrucciones, ideal para los futuros operarios de las fábricas que abrieron luego de la Revolución Industrial. ¿Cómo se puede seguir educando niños con un modelo de hace más de 170 años? Debe haber una evolución, el sistema tiene trabajo pendiente por hacer todavía. De acuerdo a Klaus Schwab, director ejecutivo del Fondo Económico Mundial (WEF), la Cuarta Revolución Industrial, basada en el uso de tecnología de información y electrónica para automatizar la producción, “se caracteriza por la fusión de las tecnologías, de manera tal que borra las líneas entre las esferas física, digital y biológica.” Es dentro de esta revolución digital que los niños de hoy en día podrán vivir su vida productiva y desarrollarán las habilidades necesarias para lograrlo con éxito. Las diez habilidades más importantes de la gente exitosa son: (Fuente: World Economic Forum “Future of Jobs Report”) 1. Capacidad de resolver problemas complejos 2. Pensamiento crítico 3. Creatividad. 4. Relaciones interpersonales 5. Coordinación y colaboración 6. Inteligencia emocional y habilidades sociales.

7. Juicio y toma de decisiones 8. Orientación al servicio 9. Negociación 10. Flexibilidad cognitiva Quienes tengan acceso a sistemas educativos que les ayuden a desarrollar esas habilidades serán quienes se obtengan el éxito dentro de las nuevas reglas que la sociedad está proponiendo.

EL FALLIDO SISTEMA “TALLA ÚNICA”

Los niños muy creativos sufren en el Sistema educativo regular, y los maestros también cuando no logran que estos niños participen, se integren y progresen. Las escuelas esperan alto rendimiento académico por parte de los niños en niveles desde kínder, cuando si les proporcionaran actividades enfocadas en el desarrollo sensor y motor, autocontrol y socialización se lograría que tengan una base mejor para los grados posteriores. En España por ejemplo, el concepto de tarea se introduce gradualmente desde primer grado, con una cantidad limitada por semana, pues se estimula al niño a que use su tiempo libre después de la escuela para disfrutar o participar en actividades deportivas, artísticas, musicales, etc. Expertos en el área de educación consideran que si se debe hacer algo de tarea en la casa, más como refuerzo o “reflexión” sobre lo que el niño ha aprendido durante el día. Sin embargo la cantidad de tarea puede ser contraproducente, pues reduce el tiempo libre que el niño puede dedicar a descansar o hacer otras actividades. El Sistema trata de ser “Talla Única” pero las personas vienen con diferentes habilidades e intereses. Los

exámenes estandarizados sirven para cuantificar el desempeño de la escuela, pero definitivamente resultan un problema para los niños, en especial si tienen dificultades de aprendizaje pues, por sus fallas al tomar el examen, obtienen resultados pobres, dañando su autoestima cuando los resultados no llenan las expectativas.

EL CAMBIO LOCAL ESTÁ EN PROGRESO ¡INTÉGRESE A LA CONVERSACIÓN!

Esfuerzos recientes han logrado introducir poco a poco cambios en el sistema actual educativo en EEUU. Cada estado es responsable por sus iniciativas, y existen lugares como California donde la educación, aun a nivel universitario, ha evolucionado para alcanzar hasta cierto punto las necesidades de la sociedad. Florida ha introducido cambios, y localmente el Sistema Escolar de Miami-Dade ha creado la Fundación para Nuevas Iniciativas www.giveourstudentstheworld.org, con la misión de asegurar fondos adicionales para mejorar los logros de los estudiantes a través de innovación y relaciones con la comunidad. La fundación ha financiado iniciativas para ayudar maestros, estudiantes y padres a desarrollar proyectos de innovación y creatividad. En Miami-Dade, hay escuelas privadas o públicas con programas y sistemas diferentes, como la escuela virtual, chárter o magnet. Hay fondos públicos que los padres pueden usar para acceder a la educación privada,

¡Pare, Alto, STOP, Frene, Deténgase!

as leyes de tránsito son para cumplirse, eso es algo que todos sabemos, sin embargo, hay muchos que, cuando están frente al volante, parecen olvidar esta afirmación, por eso hoy nos preguntamos: Sabe qué hacer en una señal de STOP? La señal de pare (STOP) es universal. El color rojo y la forma octágono es un símbolo o aviso que significa “Pare o Alto” y la ley tránsito requiere que los vehículos se detengan completamente cuando se acercan a un STOP. El oficial Noel Feliciano de la Policía de Doral explica que muchos accidentes de tránsito podrían evitarse obedeciendo el letrero de STOP. “Es importante que los conductores entiendan que las señales de tránsito están colocadas para ser cumplidas todo el tiempo y no sólo cuando hay un agente de seguridad viéndonos. Conducir es un privilegio, no un derecho, por eso debemos ser responsables y conscientes al momento de conducir”. “Un ejemplo, desafortunadamente frecuente, es cuando una persona sale de su área residencial hacia una calle principal, reduce la velocidad y al ver que no hay autos transitando en la calle principal sigue sin detenerse, pero no se da cuenta de que hay un niño montando bicicleta y lo atropella. Esto se habría evitado, si el conductor se hubiese detenido en el STOP ubicado a la salida de todas las comunidades”. El agente Feliciano también destacó la importancia de respetar el letrero de STOP de los autobuses escolares cuando se detienen a buscar estudiantes. “Algunos autobuses escolares tienen la señal de STOP y otros no, sin embargo, los que no la tienen, activan las luces intermitentes direccionales para que los autos se detengan. Esto es muy importante para la seguridad de los niños”. Lamentablemente, una cultura de imprudencia al volante, heredada de nuestros países de orígenes, hace que el STOP sea una de las señales de tránsito que es violada con mayor frecuencia, debido al desconocimiento o desobediencia a las leyes de tránsito, por lo que es importante conocer, respetar y cumplir las normas mientras conducimos nuestros vehículos. Quizás saber el costo de la multa que se debe pagar al obviar una señal de STOP nos ayude a entender que estamos obligamos a respetar el STOP. “No obedecer esta ley de tránsito le podría generar una multa de,

Here are some: • The elderly person becomes dazed, nervous or fearful when discussing financial matters • He or she does not remember having requested certain transactions • The elderly person provides contradictory or questionable explanations for financial transactions • You observe a significant change in the senior’s financial habits (such as more frequent or larger withdrawals) • There is the appearance of a new “friend” who is insistently requesting information about the elderly person’s accounts, or who tries to make changes without the senior’s permission. This new “friend” could be an acquaintance, a family member, a health care provider, or even someone the elderly person met on-line. • The new “friend” or family member refuses to let you speak to the elderly person, or insists on being present when you talk with the elderly individual. • You may see questionable signatures on documents, or it may appear that numbers on financial documents have been forged or changed. • You may learn of sudden or unexplained changes in beneficiaries on life insurance policies, or see that there have been unexplained changes of address on an elderly person’s financial statements.

WHAT TO DO?

If you see any of these signs, it is critical to act quickly. There are a number of steps that you can take: • Contact the bank or financial professional who manages the elderly person’s accounts. The bank or financial professional can freeze accounts or take other action. (MassMutual has resources to help its clients with

these situations. You can email ElderAbuse@ massmutual.com with questions). • Contact the Adult Protective Services agency in your state. Like Child Protective Services agencies, Adult Protective Services agencies are created to protect elderly and vulnerable adults. • Contact your local police department if Joseph Arbolaez you believe that the elderly person has been a victim of fraud. • Finally, if the elderly person has another trusted contact such as an attorney or accountant, he or she may be able to help. Seniors lose approximately $17 billion annually to elder financial exploitation alone. Criminal fraud accounts for $13 billion and caregiver abuse is estimated at Albert Chavez $7 billion¹. Keeping an eye out for red flags of elder abuse can help protect the ones you love.

Doral Innovates Fight Against Cancer

ince early 2017, the City of Doral joined forces with the American Cancer Society to renew the signature event Relay for Life, with the goal to increase fundraising to aid the fight against cancer. This year Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca leads the charge as Honorary Chair, Honorary Celebrity is Doral Reserve Police Officer Shaquille O’Neal, while Lili Somoano is the Event Lead and Marco Giron is the Captain for the City’s Team. Tomorrow’s doctors, scientists, and engineers need microscopes, computers, and graphing calculators today. Recognizing this immense need, Chevron launched the Fuel Your School program with DonorsChoose.org in 2010 to engage its customers, employees, retailers, parents and the communities where it works in delivering critical resources to students. During the month-long program each year, each time customers in key markets purchase 8 or more gallons of fuel at participating Chevron or Texaco gas stations, $1 is donated to a classroom project in the same city. Doral Senior High School received a check for $1,000 for educational enrichment programming as part of Chevron’s Fuel Your School program. Due to the devastation caused by both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, Chevron wanted to give back to the community in creative ways. On behalf of Chevron, School Board Member Susie V. Castillo presented $1,000 to Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, one of the many schools in the county accepting students from Puerto Rico. Chevron also surprised Susie V. Castillo with a $1,000 donation to the Andrea Castillo Teaching Academy, honoring her late daughter, Andrea Castillo, who was a former student at the school and an aspiring teacher.

These donations are part of the $500,000 Chevron is donating to Miami-Dade County Public Schools this year through the Fuel Your School program.

Reconociendo esa necesidad, Chevron lanzó el programa “Fuel Your School” con el apoyo de DonorsChoose.org en el 2010 para involucrar a sus clientes, empleados, minoristas, padres y a las comunidades donde trabajan en la entrega de recursos para los estudiantes. Durante el programa de un mes cada año, cada vez que los clientes en los mercados clave compran 8 o más galones de combustible en las gasolineras Chevron o Texaco participantes, se dona $ 1 a un proyecto de aula en la misma ciudad.

Ya se los he dicho antes, no me gusta mucho la idea de andar “contando calorías” aunque si siempre digo “de que vuelan, vuelan”... creo fielmente en que lo más importante para mantener un buen peso es combinar adecuadamente los alimentos, algo basado en el “balance” y obviamente el control de las porciones. Cuando balanceamos bien los alimentos es prácticamente como si estuviéramos contando las calorías. Y por qué es más importante la combinación? Pues resulta que cada alimento genera una respuesta hormonal y química diferente en nuestro organismo que puede hacer reacciones favorables o no para el control del peso. Por ejemplo, no es lo mismo 240k cal provenientes de una coca cola que la misma cantidad de calorías provenientes de una buena porción de pollo o pescado, Cuando tomas azucares se despierta la secreción de insulina en exceso, te da muchas más ganas de comer azucares (ansiedad) y hace que acumules grasa, sobretodo a nivel abdominal. En cambio cuando comes más proteínas y grasas logras calmar la ansiedad por azucares, te llenas por mucho mas tiempo, no segregas tanta insulina, por lo tanto evitas acumular grasa, por consecuencia, mantienes el peso. Hay muchas “dietas” y no quiero nombrar alguna (por ética profesional) que hablan o invitan a comer incluso dulces, postres, etc... tomando en cuenta solo la cantidad de calorías, e indicando llegar hasta una cantidad determinada, pero se olvidan de la salud.! De que te sirve comer 1400kcal si el 70% viene se azucares. Claro! Hay gente muy débil que no está dispuesta a cambiar sus hábitos y buscar vías fáciles, les digo algo, eso es “pan para hoy y hambre para mañana” solo aprendiendo a balancear los alimentos, conociendo como reaccionan en nuestro cuerpo es lo que permitirá que mantengas tu peso y salud. ¿Que quieres para ti?

or segundo año consecutivo, en White´s Art Gallery tuvimos el privilegio de compartir con los grandes del arte y el maestro Al Blanco, en la Exposición llamada KIKI HAT donde las estrellas son los niños. Vivimos en una época donde estamos experimentando constantes cambios, catástrofes y maldad; en donde los padres viven ocupados y sin tiempo para compartir, lo cual lleva al maestro Blanco a meditar sobre este tema, y poner su corazón en los niños; creando así un espacio para desarrollar el arte Infantil. En KIKI HAT los niños son libres de crear, imaginar y plasmar en lienzos todos sus sueños; entre pinceles y colores juegan a crear un mundo mejor y felíz. On October 20th, Doral Downtown Charter Elementary School (DDCES) received the Brazilian group “Turma da Monica” to celebrate the Children’s Day. The show was a success among students of the bilingual program Portuguese/English, parents, teachers and guests. Among especial guests were Ambassador Adalnio Senna Ganem, Deputy Consul Luiz Koury, Miami-dade County School Board Member Susie Castillo, City of Doral Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, The Rhythm Foundation Development Director Gene de Souza, BB Americas Regional Manager Leonardo Velasco, and Editor in Chief of Doral Family Journal Ettore Sabatella. The presentation was led by Simone Campos (PIPA DDCES President) and Priscila Triska (Founder & CEO of

BIS Entertainment) with stories from the Turma and videos narrated by Mauro and Mauricio de Sousa, especially for the DDCES students. It was the first time of the Turma in the U.S. and a privilege to have them perform in Doral. The event was a partnership between PIPA DDCES, BIS Entertainment, Gene de Souza, Beatriz Cariello and sponsors as BB Americas and Consulate General of Brazil in Miami. The Turma da Monica (Monica & Friends) is a famous Brazilian comic book franchise created by Mauricio de Souza over 50 years ago. Initially comic books expanded to cartoons, movies, video games, theme parks and many other products.

The Together in Pink Zumbathon® campaign culminated on October 28 with hundreds of Zumbathoners dancing to the beats of DJ Gringo and were surprised by a special guest appearance by Armando y Heidy. To kick off the Zumbathon®, donors presented over $25,000.00 to Susan G. Komen® Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. Once the reconciliation of all the monies raised is completed, the Foundation will be presented with a check of all the donations received through the various events held leading up to the October 28 event. Festival de Calabazas en Kendall Hospital Como ya es una tradición, el pasado 28 de octubre, cientos de familias se acercaron al extraordinario Festival de Calabazas que realizó el Departamento de Pediatría de Kendall Hospital Medical Center. Durante el evento, los niños (muchos de ellos disfrazados) se divirtieron decorando las calabazas, recibieron golosinas, y hasta pasearon en pony por los alrededores del festival. Además de un sin numero de actividades y juegos para todos los miembros de la familia.

Passion for Tennis was the house for the 1st SKYROS indoor doubles tennis tournament featuring over 50 south Florida local 4.0 & 4.5 NTRP players. The tournament was run from Wednesday, October 18th to Sunday, October 22nd.

coach, Mr. Fierro, ensures they enjoy themselves and have a positive experience as they represent their school throughout the season. However, academics always come first. The district’s academic and conduct requirements encourage all potential players to maintain a high grade point average as well. The John I. Smith Soccer Team serves as an example to others of how students can excel in academics and participate in athletics as well. As this season comes to an end, the Falcons are looking forward to some special events to celebrate this season such as the school’s first annual sports banquet.

he boys’ varsity soccer team at John I. Smith K-8 Center finished its 3rd season in late October. They were undefeated in the regular season in 1st place with their best record yet. As they moved on to the playins against Henry Filer Middle School the team won with a score of 4-1, qualifying them for the playoffs. In the playoffs, held at Amelia Earhart Park, they won game 1 against W.R. Thomas Middle School with a score of 6-1, leaving them in second place. Each year this team gets a step closer to their goal, the district championship. “Our soccer team is made up of an amazing group of student athletes who we are always so proud of both on the field and in the classroom,” says Mr. Navarro, principal of John I. Smith K-8 Center. The Falcons were able to defeat the best teams in their division. Their success is attributed to several factors, including the leadership of their captain, Santiago Correa that helped them to work together for a common goal and remain focused all season. This talented young man’s passion for the game is contagious. The team also demonstrated admirable team work and had a very strong defense. Center back Domenico Elias was instrumental for the defense. The midfield also worked hard and in sync with the forwards. There is definitely much talent in this group of young athletes. The soccer team’s home games were played at Morgan Levy Park. The school’s partnership with the City of Doral made it possible to enjoy their newly renovated facilities. Students, parents, staff and even the school mascot and dancers were present at the home games to cheer on the team. The school administration encourages students to participate in intramural sports as it develops comradery among players, school spirit, and sense of belonging.
