ice Mayor Ana Maria Rodriguez was recognized with the 2017 Public Service Award at the 23rd Annual South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC) Sunshine Awards. The award is in recognition of the vice mayor’s many accomplishments and contributions to the City of Doral, as well as being an inspiration to all women for her leadership and commitment to serve her community. The luncheon took place on Friday, November 3rd at the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove hotel. “I am humbled and blessed to receive this award. I take great pride in serving my community while empowering women everywhere to do the same. I am grateful to the SFLHCC for recognizing

A Special Thanksgiving after the Storm By Grecia Romero

Harvey, Irma, María and the Earthquake of Mexico teach important lessons and uncover anonymous heroes willing to help.

he summer of 2017 will be remembered for years for having brought with it some of the greatest and most devastating natural disasters in history. In a blink of an eye, thousands of people saw their lives change without being able to do anything to prevent it. This Thanksgiving Day will not be the same for many, Thanksgiving night will be an opportunity to appreciate the blessing of living, having family around, health, work and a home; and for many, a renewal of energy to stand up and moving on in life after those disasters.

PREPARED FOR THE WORST, WAITING FOR THE BEST

Just few days apart from knowing the effects of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and while still joining efforts to support the victims over that state, the Caribbean and of Florida were next in line to get hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria, both of them category 5. As the media reported the forecasted course of the storms, readiness plans for the possible damages were followed by residents. The State of Florida was declared state of emergency ahead of time, opening a great amount of shelters to receive thousands of residents living in zones with mandatory evacuation orders. The largest exodus ever recorded in the history of Florida was done in less than a week, moved by the fear of great damage caused by rain and the strong winds, as well as storm surges and flooding. The tension was felt as the authorities repeated to everyone “prepare for the worst, hoping for the best”. That warning was indeed necessary as these storms couldn’t be taken lightly. Hurricane Irma was responsible for at least 134 deaths, and hurricane Maria of about 129, as well as dozens of people missing. These storms caused catastrophic damages and major humanitarian crisis in the Caribbean Islands.

VOLUNTEERS: THE TRUE HEROES

When natural disasters happen, the assistance must be provided quickly and effectively to relief the victims as much as possible. Government, public and private organizations and volunteers, working together as a team, are the only possible way to ensure that the basic needs of the victims are covered. Volunteers do not necessarily belongs to non-profit organizations. They are mostly individuals who are moved by the situation and are willing to offer their time, talents and treasure to help those in need. They can be considered the true heroes, such as those we will be referring to in this article without specifying their

names but sharing their experiences, which represent on a small scale, the large crowd of people who decided to go out and help others in different ways. “Along with some co-workers, I decided to attend FIU which was used as a shelter for Florida Key residents. We didn’t really know what to do, but we were willing to assist with whatever task was needed. Just being there watching so many people that most likely wouldn’t have a home to return to, made us realize that that was the place we really needed to be at the time, so we went three days in a row to support them sorting clothing, distributing food and even entertaining children so that their parents could have some time to rest and relax their minds”, a Doral volunteer shared. The spirit of cooperation ranged from coordinating efforts in the collection, classification and distribution of donations, to comforting the victims by assisting them in the shelters. Every single volunteer effort had a multiplier effect to achieve great results, as this testimony from a Puerto Rican-American woman shows: “When I realized the devastation the island suffered, I knew I needed to do something. Born to Puerto Rican parents, a large part of my life’s memories were spent there. Together with some friends and through social media, we were able to reach a vast amount of people in a very small amount of time. In 24 hours, we had a team of people donating money, supplies and their time to form a chain of humanitarian support. Funded through private donations, the scope of that aid included even free flights from Puerto Rico to Florida, bringing people with special needs or using wheelchairs. In one of those flights an elderly man,

wrapped in blankets was brought out of the plane as if he were wrapped in a hammock and brought to the car. We can’t imagine the devastation and despair that people are suffering there.” A person who welcomed her parents in one of those flights shares her memories and gratitude: “Many times we find it hard to believe that there are people out there who do things for others without expecting anything in return because we live in a culture where everything has a price or an economic value, but I can say that, that kind of people do exist. My parents left Puerto Rico because of the efforts of people I didn’t

even know, who didn’t know my parents, and thou they urge the assistance as if they were their own family. There are no words that describe the gratitude and joy I felt when I saw them safe and sound at the Miami airport.” Without any doubt, volunteers were living angels for many people, attending even the most moving cases like the care of a family sheltered in FIU whose baby had been born the day before the hurricane. The volunteers made sure they felt well and protected with everything necessary to cover their needs thanks to the numerous donations received. That family is now in the FEMA program and they are helping them getting a house. Volunteers are considered as heroes, willing to help others for days without expecting any reward or recognition, and thus they ended up strengthened by the stories they have to share. As the say, their greatest learning lesson came from the same people who were in the shelters, because despite their circumstances, they showed a humble, grateful and positive attitude supporting each other, and even offering themselves as volunteers to assist one another. Some of those who were helped, are now leading efforts to continue supporting families that are still fighting to get back on their feet, as this testimony shows: “After the hurricane, volunteers that I didn’t know came and helped remove a tree that was blocking the entrance of my house. This moved my heart so deeply that I decided to gather food to make sure that families in Naples and the Keys can enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner”.

WHEN THE EARTH TREMBLES, THE HEART TOO!

Mexico didn’t escape from tropical storms and hurricanes this summer either, but that wasn’t exactly the reason why the needed help, but because of the strong earthquake of a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale, which affected Mexico City last September, just the same day but 32 years apart from the powerful earthquake that caused thousands of deaths in that same city. Quickly social media were filled with terrifying images and videos that survivors made available. It is estimated that about 369 people lost their lives that day, thousand were reported injured, and hundreds are still missing. The search for survivors was tirelessly done for several days using international technology, trained dogs, and a great deployment of officials and volunteers willing to collaborate in whatever was necessary in order to avoid any waste of time to rescue the victims. In an earthquake there are no warnings, no time for preparation, and no possible evacuation routes. Everything depends on the magnitude of the earthquake, the engineering behind the buildings and

structures, and being at the right time and place to escape. Countless families were left literally with what they were wearing because they did not have the time to take anything out of their homes. Others did not even have the time to say goodbye to their loved ones. Facing this heartbreaking news, the Mexican community residing in Miami began efforts to collect supplies in different drop off centers. It had been only 10 days since Irma affected Miami, and there were still people in the local shelters, but that didn’t stop the donations of first aid supplies, clothing, food, toys, baby products and such to arrive. Without delay donations were sorted and packed so that a wellrecognized cargo company could transported it free of charge to Mexico City. “It was impressive to see how the community of Mexicans living in Miami came together to support fellows Mexicans over there. The aid was directed to Mexico and locally to some areas of South Florida where Mexicans and Central Americans, who were seriously affected by Hurricane Irma, live”, says a volunteer. Generosity has not nationality, and that was proven for Mexico as well as relief aids were received with a multiplying effect. “I was impressed by the fact that a Puerto Rican friend had approached me to make donations for those affected in Mexico after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. His great generosity moved me because also his country was living a crisis and he was able to continue getting involved”, said a Mexican resident.

REASONS TO BE THANKFUL

It is proven that natural disasters make us see life from a different perspective. What could be very important one day, could be no longer so valuable after suffering such an impacting experience. The fragility of life is even more evident and it almost obvious the importance of living it fully along with the loved ones. Many of the volunteers agree that service experiences help human beings to be more sensitive

to the needs of people. It helps us to be more positive in life and treat others with kindness and respect despite the fact we know them or not. Life is very fragile and nothing should be taken for granted so life should be enjoyed paying attention to the beauty of the small, every-day simple things. Probably one of the most valuable lessons worthy to keep is learning to complain less and value more what we have, and especially to appreciate the endless resources available in this country in the event of suffering a devastation caused by a natural disaster. This appreciation implies sharing from what we have and not just what is left over, teaching by example to the youngest ones about the true meaning of bringing joy to others and receiving happiness along the way. As expressed by one volunteer, “Discovering the blessing of having the energy, the desire and the ability to help those in need. Thanking for the strength and the gift of being able to move other people to make someone else’s life a little better.” Whoever decides to leave their comfort zone to help another human being has the privilege of meeting wonderful people, who feel empathy for others and who most likely will be a future friend. They remind others that passing through difficult times is much easier when there is a helping hand available, as this volunteer concludes: “I feel infinitely thankful because we were never alone. This Thanksgiving celebration will have a more special meaning for many families.”

THERE IS STILL MUCH MORE TO BE DONE

The spirit of true helping is not a moment of collective euphoria, it extends far beyond, bringing relief to the victims in their recovery process and continuing to support them along the way. There are currently people organizing events to continue collecting food and supplies for the less fortunate to cheer them up a bit on the upcoming celebrations. It is not easy to survive natural disasters such as those experienced in recent months. In some cases, those affected need more support when everything seems to come back to reality and they have to face the challenges of accepting material or human losses starting a new life from scratch. It is there where the company, the contribution and affection of all is still important for these families and individuals to keep hope and positivism high. May this Thanksgiving Day be different and special, celebrating the gift of life and continuing to be willing to maintain a generous spirit, bringing love to others through service.

l verano de 2017 será recordado por años por haber traído consigo los eventos naturales y tormentas más grandes y devastadoras de la historia. Miles de personas vieron cambiar su vida en un abrir y cerrar de ojos sin poder hacer nada para impedirlo. Por eso, este Dia de Acción de Gracias no tendrá el mismo sentido, ni podrá ser una festividad tradicional más que reúna familia y amigos para disfrutar solo una buena comida. En la mesa de muchos, la noche de Acción de Gracias será una oportunidad para apreciar la bendición de tener vida, familia, salud, trabajo y techo; y para otros, una renovación de las energías para seguir adelante y comenzar de nuevo.

A pocos días de lamentar los efectos Huracán Harvey en Texas y de apoyar con recursos y ayuda a los afectados, los habitantes de las Islas del Caribe y la Florida eran los siguientes en la lista con Irma y María, ambos huracanes categoría 5. A medida que los medios informaban el curso de las tormentas, se acataba las medidas de preparación ante los posibles estragos. El estado de Florida fue declarado en emergencia, varias zonas recibieron mandato de evacuación obligatoria y en otras, se recomendaba hospedaje en refugios y edificaciones seguras. El éxodo más grande registrado en la historia de la Florida se realizó en menos de una semana, pues se temían grandes daños causados por las lluvias y fuertes vientos, así como marejadas e inundaciones posteriores. En el ambiente se sentía la tensión y Las autoridades repetían a todos “prepararse para lo peor, esperando lo mejor”. Y fue realmente necesaria esa advertencia, estas tormentas no eran juego. El huracán Irma fue responsable de al menos 134 muertes y el huracán María de 129, así como decenas de personas que aún se encuentran desaparecidas. Cuando existen desastres naturales, la ayuda debe brindarse de forma rápida y efectiva para aliviar en lo posible los efectos en las victimas. Gracias al trabajo en conjunto entre los gobiernos, organismos públicos y privados, y voluntarios, se pueden atender prontamente las necesidades básicas. Pero esos voluntarios no son necesariamente organizaciones sin fines de lucro, son personas particulares que se sienten conmovidos por la situación y sin esperar ningún beneficio a cambio, están dispuestos a ofrecer su tiempo, talentos y recursos para ayudar

a quien lo necesite y como lo necesite. Son ellos los verdaderos héroes anónimos, como los que señalamos sin nombre en este artículo, y quienes comparten sus experiencias, representando en pequeña escala la gran multitud de personas que decidió salir a ayudar a los demás en distintas formas: “Junto a unas compañeras de trabajo, asistimos a FIU donde tenían alojadas a las personas de los Cayos dispuestas a ayudar con lo que fuese necesario. Al ver la gran cantidad de gente y pensar que ellos no tenían ni casa a donde volver, nos dimos cuenta que allí era donde teníamos que estar, así que fuimos tres días seguidos apoyando en la selección de ropa, distribución de alimento y hasta entreteniendo a los niños para que sus padres pudieran descansar un rato y dispersar la mente”, comenta una residente de Doral. El espíritu de cooperación abarcó desde coordinar esfuerzos en la recolección, clasificación y distribución de los insumos y donaciones, hasta consolar a las víctimas asistiéndolas en los refugios. Toda ayuda tuvo un efecto

multiplicador para lograr grandes resultados, como lo muestra este testimonio de una puertoriqueña: “Cuando me di cuenta la devastación que sufrió la isla, supe que tenía que hacer algo. Con padres puertorriqueños, la mayoría de los recuerdos de mi infancia fueron en Puerto Rico. Entre amigos y por medio de las redes sociales, pudimos lograr que en menos de 24 horas tuviéramos muchísima gente ayudando con dinero, suministros y su tiempo para formar una fuerte cadena humanitaria. Gracias a donaciones privadas, el alcance de esta ayuda incluyó hasta vuelos gratuitos para personas desde Puerto Rico a la Florida. En esos vuelos llegaron personas con necesidades especiales, en sillas de ruedas, hasta un señor mayor que venía envuelto en mantas como si lo hubiesen envuelto en una hamaca y lo llevaron así al automóvil. No podemos imaginar la devastación y desesperación que aun la gente está sufriendo allá”. Una persona que recibió a sus padres en uno de esos vuelos comparte: “Muchas veces nos cuesta creer que hay gente que hagan cosas por los demás sin esperar nada a cambio porque vivimos en un tipo de cultura donde todo tiene un precio o algún valor económico. Pero ese tipo de personas si existen. Mis padres salieron de Puerto Rico gracias a las gestiones de personas que ni conocía, que no conocían a mis padres, y ayudaron con su traslado como si se tratara de su familia. No existe palabras que describan el agradecimiento y alegría que sentí al verlos sanos y salvos en el aeropuerto de Miami”. Sin duda, los voluntarios fueron ángeles vivientes para muchas personas, atendiendo hasta los casos más conmovedores como el de una familia albergada

en FIU cuyo bebe había nacido el día antes del huracán. Los voluntarios se aseguraron que estuvieran bien y protegidos con todo lo necesario gracias a las numerosas donaciones. Esta familia se encuentra en el programa de FEMA y les están ayudando a obtener una casa. Aunque estos héroes anónimos ayudaron por muchos días a otros sin esperar recompensa, salieron fortalecidos de las historias que tienen para compartir. Varios coinciden que el mayor aprendizaje vino de las mismas personas que estuvieron en los refugios quienes demostraron una actitud humilde, agradecida y positiva apoyándose los unos a los otros, ofreciéndose ellos mismos como voluntarios para asistir a los más débiles. Incluso algunos de los que recibieron apoyo de otros, son los que ahora lideran esfuerzos para continuar aliviando a las víctimas, como muestra este testimonio: “Varias personas que ni me conocían vinieron a mi casa a ayudarme a remover un árbol que no me dejaba abrir la puerta después del huracán Irma. Esto me motivó tanto que decidí reunir alimentos para entregar cestas a familias que aún están tratando de reponerse en Naples y los Cayos, para que ellas puedan tener una linda cena de Acción de Gracias”.

¡CUANDO LA TIERRA TIEMBLA, EL CORAZÓN TAMBIÉN!

México tampoco se escapó de tormentas tropicales y de huracanes de baja categoría este verano, pero no fue precisamente por eso que requirió la mayor ayuda sino por el impactante terremoto de 7,1 grados en la escala de

de funcionarios y voluntarios dispuestos a colaborar en lo que fuese necesario con tal de no perder ni un solo segundo para rescatar a las víctimas. En un terremoto no hay avisos, no hay tiempo de preparativos, ni ruta de huida posible. Todo depende de la magnitud del sismo, la ingeniería que se haya puesto en los construir los edificios y estar en el momento y lugar correcto para escapar. Incontables familias quedaron literalmente con lo que llevaban puesto por no haber contado con el tiempo de sacar nada de sus casas. Otras no tuvieron tiempo ni de despedir a sus seres queridos que perdieron la vida en un instante. Ante esta desgarradora noticia, la comunidad mexicana residenciada en Miami sin esperar comenzó también a organizar esfuerzos de recolección de suministros en distintos centros de acopio. Habían pasado sólo 10 días desde que Irma afectaba Miami y aun habían personas en los refugios locales, pero esto no impidió que los donativos de artículos de primeros auxilios, ropa, alimentos, juguetes, productos para bebes y similares comenzaran a llegar. Sin demora los donativos se sortearon, empacaron y clasificaron de forma que una reconocida empresa de cargo los transportara de manera gratuita a la ciudad de México. “Fue impresionante ver como la comunidad de mexicanos viviendo en Miami se unió para apoyar tanto. La ayuda que se direccionó a México y localmente a algunas áreas del Sur de la Florida donde viven mexicanos y centroamericanos que fueron seriamente afectados por el paso del Huracán Irma, por lo que organizamos una colecta de ropa y alimentos para llevar a la zona de Redlands”, comenta una voluntaria. En el caso de México, los esfuerzos también han tenido un efecto multiplicador, pues la generosidad no tiene nacionalidad. “Lo que más me impresionó es que después de que el Huracán María devastó Puerto Rico, se acercó a mí un amigo puertorriqueño para preguntarme donde podía donar para los afectados en México. Su generosidad me conmovió pues su país también estaba en crisis”, comenta una residente mexicana.

MOTIVOS PARA ESTAR AGRADECIDOS

Richter, que afecto a Ciudad de México el pasado mes de Septiembre, justo el mismo día que se cumplían 32 años del poderoso terremoto que provocó miles de muertes esa misma ciudad. Rápidamente las redes sociales se llenaron de aterradoras imágenes y videos que los sobrevivientes hacían disponibles. Se estima que unas 369 personas perdieron la vida, miles quedaron heridas y cientos de personas desaparecidas. La búsqueda de sobrevivientes bajo los escombros se hizo incansablemente por varios días utilizando tecnología internacional, perros entrenados para casos de emergencia y un despliegue

Sin duda alguna, los desastres naturales nos hacen ver la vida de una perspectiva distinta. Lo que pudiera ser muy importante para alguien, tras vivir una experiencia como esta, ya no tiene tanto valor. Pone en evidencia la fragilidad de la vida y lo importante de vivirla a plenitud junto a los seres queridos. Muchos de los voluntarios coinciden que experiencias de servicio ayuda a los seres humanos a ser más sensibles a las necesidades de las personas. A vivir el día a día tratando de ser más positivo y amable con la gente que se conoce, y con la que no se conoce. Que la vida es muy frágil y no se tiene nada seguro, y que esta experiencia permite prestar atención a la belleza de las pequeñas cosas cotidianas y simples que muchas veces se dan por hecho.

Probablemente una de las lecciones a mantener es el aprender a quejarse menos y valorar más lo que se tiene, y especialmente los recursos con que cuenta la localidad o país donde se vive para atender desastres naturales con prontitud. Implica aprender a compartir de lo que se tiene y no lo que sobra, enseñando con el ejemplo a los más jóvenes sobre el verdadero significado de llevar alegría a otros y recibir felicidad en el camino. Como expresa esta voluntaria, “Descubrir la bendición de tener la energía, las ganas y la capacidad de ayudar. Agradecer la fuerza y el don de poder convocar gente para ayudar y poder hacer la vida de alguien un poco mejor”. Quien se decide a salir de su zona de comodidad para ayudar a otro, tiene el privilegio de conocer gente maravillosa, que siente empatía por los demás y que en el futuro serán buenas amistades. Que recuerdan a otros que los momentos difíciles son más fáciles de llevar cuando hay una mano amiga, como concluye esta voluntaria: “Siento infinitas gracias porque nunca estamos solos. Este Día de Acción de Gracias tendrá un sentido más especial para muchas familias”.

LA NECESIDAD CONTINÚA, AÚN HAY MUCHO POR HACER

El espíritu de verdadera ayuda no es un momento de euforia colectiva, se extiende mucho más allá llevando alivio a las víctimas en su proceso de recuperación y continuar apoyándolas. Aún hay personas organizando eventos para seguir recolectando despensas para la gente menos afortunada y alegrarles un poco en las próximas celebraciones de fin de año. No es fácil sobrevivir a desastres naturales como los vividos en los últimos meses. En algunos casos, los afectados necesitan más apoyo cuando aparentemente todo vuelve a la realidad y se enfrentan a los retos de aceptar las pérdidas materiales o humanas y comenzar desde cero una nueva vida. Es allí donde la compañía, el aporte y cariño de todos sigue siendo importante para que estas familias e individuos mantengan en alto la esperanza y el positivismo. Que este Día de Acción de Gracias sea diferente y especial, celebrando el don de la vida y seguir dispuestos a mantener un espíritu generoso de llevar amor a otros a través del servicio.

urante la reunión mensual del consejo de la Ciudad del Doral se hizo un especial reconocimiento a empresas como Chick-Fil-A, Brain Freeze Nitrogen Ice Cream y Wallgreens por la oportunidad que ofrecen de trabajo a adultos y jóvenes con necesidades especiales. Vinata Tandon, miembro del concejo asesor de necesidades especiales de la Ciudad del Doral, invitó a otras compañías a hacer lo mismo, habló sobre la contribución que hacen estos jóvenes a la comunidad al involucrarlos en las empresas de una manera productiva. Tandon alentó a otras empresas del Doral diciendo que hay muchos adultos y jóvenes con necesidades especiales interesados en trabajar. Por su parte, Ricardo Dager habló de su experiencia como un joven adulto con autismo y deficiencia auditiva, actualmente trabajando para la Ciudad del Doral en el departamento de parques y recreación. Dager comentó que este es su tercer año trabajando, dijo que en lugar de estar en casa cuidado por sus padres, está más bien en su trabajo cuidando a personas mayores en las noches de Bingo o ayudando en las actividades y eventos de la ciudad. Dijo sentirse un verdadero miembro productivo de esta comunidad como cualquier otra persona, agradeció por la oportunidad que le dieron para ese empleo y alentó a otras empresas a hacer lo mismo. Estas empresas representan un modelo a seguir al incluir personas con necesidades especiales. Es necesario continuar apoyando y difundiendo la inclusión de personas con diversas capacidades al campo laboral, de esta forma nuestros jóvenes serán más independientes y así estaremos formando una sociedad más tolerante e integrada socialmente.

erely a week after being approved by Council, Doral residents started seeing the bright orange SPIN bicycles parked around key locations. Those vehicles are available to use, within City limits, for only $1 per half hour. Upon arrival to their destination, users can park the bike wherever they want; The Company will come by later to pick it up. The initiative was sponsored by Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and was approved unanimously at the November Council Meeting. The agreement authorized by Council grants the California-based startup Skinny Labs / SPIN exclusive rights to operate the pilot stationless bike sharing program for twelve months, at no cost to the City. Up to 550 bicycles will be available at different locations within the next three months. With this initiative Doral joins other municipalities in the country such as Dallas, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington and Miami Lakes in offering this service to its residents.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

First of all users need to download the SPIN app from the application site of their mobile service provider (IOS or

Android). Once downloaded, the registration has to be done using either email address or Facebook profile, and users have to load a form of payment, selecting either pay-asyou-go or unlimited ride prepaid membership. The Pay-as-you-go option is $1 per each 30 minutes of bike use and prepaid plans start at $29. The user then selects a SPIN bike available nearby his location, scans or records the QR code on the bike lock in the application, the bike unlocks and he is good to go. When he arrives to his destination he responsibly parks the used bike and puts the lock on, or otherwise the usage time will keep running. Any issues the user might have can be resolved via live chat through the “Help” feature on the app, through email, writing to support@spin.pm or calling the number on the lock of the bike. SPIN Bike Fleet Operations Service will pick up the bikes at night and park them again at several predetermined spots around the city where user traffic is more constant and the application has determined is

important to have them available. For instance, the first bike fleet deployment locations have included the parks, commercial areas and the Government Center. The application collects data from the bikes, allowing the company to learn from user’s behavior and determine additional places to locate the bikes for future use. Están disponibles para el uso, dentro de los límites de la ciudad, por solamente $1 cada media hora y al llegar a su destino los usuarios no tienen que preocuparse; la estacionan y la compañía las recogerá después. Esta iniciativa, promovida por el Alcalde Bermúdez, fue aprobada por unanimidad en la sesión de Noviembre. En el contrato Doral autoriza de manera exclusiva a la compañía californiana Skinny Labs / SPIN para que opere un programa piloto de bicicletas compartidas, sin estaciones fijas, durante 12 meses y sin costo para la Ciudad. Un máximo de 550 bicicletas estarán disponibles en diferentes ubicaciones en los próximos tres meses. Con este programa Doral se une a otras municipalidades del país como Dallas, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington D.C y Miami Lakes en ofrecer este servicio a sus residentes.

¿CÓMO FUNCIONA?

Los usuarios deben instalar la aplicación SPIN en sus

celulares (funciona en IOS y Android). Se registran en el sistema utilizando su dirección de correo electrónico o perfil de Facebook, cargan una forma de pago y seleccionan ‘pay-as-you-go’ a un costo de $1 cada media hora, o membresía de uso ilimitado con planes que comienzan en $29. El usuario selecciona una bicicleta SPIN que esté cerca de su localidad, registra el código QR del candado del equipo en la aplicación y la bicicleta se desbloqueará para uso. Al llegar a su destino debe estacionarla de manera responsable en un lugar permitido y colocar el candado

para culminar el servicio, si no el costo seguirá corriendo. Cualquier dificultad que el usuario tenga puede resolverla a través de la opción ‘HELP’ en la aplicación, enviando un email a support@spin.pm o llamando al número indicado en el candado del equipo. El servicio de Operación de Flota SPIN recogerá las bicicletas todas las noches y las colocará nuevamente en los puntos predeterminados de la ciudad donde el tráfico de usuarios es más constante y donde la aplicación ha determinado que es importante tenerlas disponibles por la demanda. Por ejemplo, las primeras 150 bicicletas han sido instaladas en los parques, áreas comerciales y cerca de la Alcaldía. La aplicación recoge datos de las bicicletas, permitiendo a la compañía aprender de la conducta de los usuarios de la ciudad y determinar los sitios adicionales donde es más necesario ubicar las bicicletas para su uso futuro. Estacionar responsablemente las bicicletas implica que nunca deben ser ubicadas en propiedad privada o sitios públicos donde estacionarlas esté prohibido: en el medio de la acera o en la calle obstruyendo el libre tránsito. Es un servicio sin estación fija, por lo tanto los usuarios pueden llegar lo más cerca posible de su destino final.

Due to the amount of closed communities in Doral the company will meet with HOAs to determine the authorizations to park and pick up SPIN bikes inside.

WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM?

Although the implementation of some sort of bike sharing program in Doral was considered a couple of years ago, it was dismissed for the high cost of operation and maintenance. The agreement with Doral is similar to the one they have implemented at several other locations in the country, where the main advantage is that there is no cost to the municipality to implement the service. There are no docking stations, the users pay for their service and the operation is run by the private company that owns the bicycles. It is a win-win situation. SPIN is a start-up company founded in California in 2016 by three young engineers graduated from top tier universities Euwyn Poon (President - Cornell), Derrick Ko (CEO -Purdue), and, Zaizhuang Cheng (CTO - Stanford). They have raised $ 8 Million to launch the company operations around the country, with the vision of “transforming cities and campuses by offering an accessible, affordable and environmentally-friendly form of personal mobility”. They employ locally for the operation, but the core team is located in California and includes engineers, designers, lawyers and policy makers with experience from Uber, Lyft and other companies. The success of this pilot program in the City of Doral will depend on how the community behaves towards the service, especially regarding the respect to bike drivers sharing the streets and the responsible parking of the used units. Upon the expiration of the agreement next year the company will come back to Council with the metrics and a decision will be made about the permanence of the bike sharing service.

Pero deben hacerlo de manera ordenada y considerada. Más allá de ser un programa piloto para el servicio de bicicletas compartidas, esto va a resultar una prueba de disciplina, modales, responsabilidad y ciudadanía para los residentes de Doral. Dada la cantidad de comunidades cerradas en la ciudad, la compañía se reunirá con las asociaciones correspondientes para determinar la autorización para el estacionamiento y recogida de bicicletas SPIN dentro de sus límites.

Hace dos años se consideró un programa similar en Doral, pero fue descartado por los altos costos de operación y mantenimiento. El contrato con Doral es similar al implementado en otras ciudades del país y su mayor ventaja es que tiene costo cero para las municipalidades. No existen estaciones fijas, los usuarios pagan por su servicio y la compañía privada opera y mantiene las bicicletas. Es una situación ganar/ganar SPIN es una compañía emergente fundada en California en 2016 por tres jóvenes ingenieros egresados de universidades prestigiosas: Euwyn Poon (Presidente - Cornell), Derrick Ko (CEO -Purdue), y Zaizhuang Cheng (CTO - Stanford). Ellos recaudaron US $8 Millones para iniciar las operaciones por todo el país, con la visión de “transformar ciudades ofreciendo un método de transporte personal accesible, sencillo y en armonía con el ambiente.” Para la operación emplean personal local, pero el equipo principal está en California e incluye ingenieros, diseñadores, abogados y legisladores, con experiencia en compañías como UBER, Lyft y otras. El éxito de este programa piloto en Doral dependerá del comportamiento de la comunidad ante el servicio, especialmente con respecto a compartir las calles con los ciclistas y el cuidado y estacionamiento responsable de las unidades. Dentro de un año cuando expire el contrato la compañía comparecerá nuevamente ante el Concejo con las métricas de operación del servicio y se tomará una decisión sobre su permanencia en la Ciudad de Doral.

ovember and December are quickly approaching and there is a certain sense of excitement and joy in the air. As 2017 reaches its final months, the long anticipated Holidays will soon be with us. In our society these months are filled with cherished memories and much desired time with loved ones. The days fly and the hours seem short as we attempt to decorate, shop, party plan, prepare dishes, and plan outings. So many crafts, activities, and projects to choose from: How do we spend our time? Which activities would be the best? The options are endless. Pediatric clinicians see the holiday season as an excellent opportunity to motivate children to participate in task and activities that promote and increase development and self esteem. Most families experience long days filled with rigid routines that facilitate a sedentary lifestyle. Development through movement, sound, socialization, and touch are often neglected due to time restrictions and rigorous academic demands. Play activities serve as a means to improve performance, because they are self motivating and offer goals around which the child can self organize (Parham & Primeau, 1997). “Play is the way the child learns what no one can teach him. It is the way he explores and orients himself to the actual world (Franz,1963).” Keeping the importance of play and development

in mind, there are numerous opportunities to take advantage of during ongoing festivities. Involving children in holiday preparations will create stronger family bonds and enhance development and mental health. Holiday activities to promote development: • Stringing popcorn for a tree garland to increase fine motor coordination. • Decorating Christmas cookies to increase in hand manipulation. • Mixing and Stirring foods to increase upper extremity strength. • Carrying gifts to increase upper extremity strength and proprioceptive input to joints. • Spinning a dreidel to increase fine motor coordination. • Building a gingerbread house for tactile input and motor planning. • Holiday singalongs to increase pragmatics and emotional responses. • Making snow angels to increase bilateral coordination. • Wrapping presents to increase sequencing and problem solving. • Retelling holiday stories to friends/family to enhance sequencing and expressive language Some children have difficulties tolerating large crowds, excessive noises, bright lights, and might actually

demonstrate aversive behaviors to festivities. Such aversive behaviors can be manifested as tantrums, emotional outbursts, excessive crying, humming, covering ears, and /or closing eyes. In many cases, these behaviors can implicate a sensory processing disorder, frustration over communication, or a behavioral issue. ecently, a parent called me because their son in 5th grade was worried about what middle school to attend because he wanted to make sure that he was ready for a high school that would get him into a good college. Yes, 5th grader. Yes, I get these types of questions all the time. Why are we worried about college in 5th grade? Well, actually, you should be worried about college even earlier. Let’s focus on third and fifth grade. In third grade, there is a shift in how students learn. Up until third grade, students are being taught how to read. Reading is enforced and practiced so that they can become good readers. However, in third grade there is a shift that instead of instead of learning to read – students now have to read to learn. In other words, you need to be able to read your assignments, notes, textbooks, and digest the information and understand it so that you can do well in school. If you have not become a good reader by third grade, those poor reading skills will follow you through high school and college. If you make it to college. Parents, if your students are not good readers by third grade- you need to take action. Reading is not something that you TEACH a third grader- it is something that needs to be practiced. That means students need to read A LOT. They need to read anything and everything but they need to do it often and move up reading levels. Practice makes perfect when it comes to reading. Mastering reading is vital in third grade. The Annie E. Casey Foundation completed a study in 2011 that found that students who are not proficient readers by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

An even earlier study in 1996 found that 74% of students who were poor readers in third grade continued to struggle academically through their freshman year of high school. Third graders who ARE proficient readers are usually the product of early education, good health, and social successall indicators of future academic achievements. The evidence is so strong about this critical benchmark in third grade that an urban myth exists about how prison planners use third grade reading levels to determine how many prison beds they will need in the future. Is it really a myth? It has been found that 85% of all juveniles going through the juvenile court system are at a functionally low literate level. The National Adult Literacy Survey report found that 70% of incarcerated adults are unable to read at a 4th grade level which translates to them not having the reading skills necessary to manage everyday tasks or hold down anything other than a low paying job. If your child is a good reader in third grade, then your next step is in fifth grade you need to determine what their math level is. In the state of Florida, if a student scores well on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), the student may be placed in an advanced level of math during 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. By advanced math I am referring to the fact that your middle school student may take Algebra before staring high school. If the student takes Algebra as early as 6th grade, then during 7th and 8th grade he will continue to take high school level math courses. Is this a good thing? Taking high school level math in middle school? That depends- let me give you some facts that support taking more advanced math courses in high school. Of all the fastest growing jobs in America, 80% are STEM-related. STEM is any area related to Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math. The Smithsonian Science Education Center found that there will be 2.4 million STEM jobs unfilled in 2018 because of the lack of qualified candidates. We simply don’t have enough students studying or excelling in

the STEM majors. In order to do well in a STEM related major in college or to be accepted into a college with a good STEM program, students should be taking as many math and/or science courses in high school. This includes Honors courses and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. This would allow the student to have a strong academic preparation for a STEM major in college or will allow the student to take advanced math and/or science courses in college to be prepared for a STEM career. STEM is not for everyone- but it is the strongest most promising career field for the future. For those students who have a enjoy math and science, this is the path they should be taking. Math is something that you can help your student with so that they can perform well on their 5th grade assessment and then continue down a specific academic path through middle school, high school, and college. But even if math is not their strong point or interest, reading is essential to everyone. Regardless of their career. Reading is something that you need every day for almost all tasks. This is why a 5th grader was concerned about his middle school. Was he going to do well in math? Was he going to have the opportunity to take advanced courses before getting to high school? Not all middle schools offer them! Was his high school going to offer Honors and Advanced Placement courses that would help him get into a good college? Not all high schools offer these courses. Some of you may think that this is too much for a 5th grader to be concerned about- but to me, it sounds like he’s on the right track.

Planificación universitaria durante la escuela media... o antes!!

ecientemente, un padre me llamó porque su hijo de 5to grado estaba preocupado acerca de cual escuela media asistiría porque quería estar seguro que estaba listo para una escuela secundaria que lo llevaría a una buena universidad. Sí, 5to grado!! Recibo este tipo de preguntas todo el tiempo. ¿Por qué estar preocupados por la universidad en 5to grado? Bueno, en realidad, debería preocuparse por la universidad incluso antes. Centrémonos en tercer y quinto grado. En tercer grado, hay un cambio en la forma en que los estudiantes aprenden. Hasta el tercer grado, a los estudiantes se les enseña a leer. La lectura se aplica y se practica para que puedan convertirse en buenos lectores. Sin embargo, en tercer grado hay un cambio que en vez de aprender a leer, los estudiantes ahora tienen que leer para aprender. En otras palabras, debe poder leer sus tareas, notas, libros de texto y digerir la información y comprenderla para que pueda hacerlo bien en la escuela. Si no se ha convertido en un buen lector para el tercer grado, esas habilidades deficientes de lectura lo seguirán a través de la escuela secundaria y la universidad.

Padres, si sus hijos no son buenos lectores en tercer grado, deben tomar medidas. Leer no es algo que ENSEÑES a un alumno de tercer grado, es algo que debe practicarse. Eso significa que los estudiantes necesitan leer MUCHO. Necesitan leer cualquier cosa, pero necesitan hacerlo a menudo y subir de nivel de lectura. La práctica es perfecta cuando se trata de leer. Dominar la lectura es vital en tercer grado. La Fundación Annie E. Casey completó un estudio en 2011 que encontró que los estudiantes que no son lectores competentes en tercer grado tienen cuatro veces más probabilidades de abandonar la escuela secundaria. Un estudio aún más temprano en 1996 encontró que el 74% de los estudiantes que eran lectores deficientes en tercer grado continuaron teniendo dificultades académicas durante su primer año en la escuela

secundaria. Los estudiantes de tercer grado que SON lectores competentes suelen ser el producto de la educación temprana, la buena salud y el éxito social, todos indicadores de los logros académicos futuros. Tomando matemáticas de nivel secundario en la escuela media? Eso depende, déjame darte algunos datos que respalden tomar cursos de matemáticas más avanzados en la escuela secundaria. De todos los empleos de más rápido crecimiento en los Estados Unidos, el 80% están relacionados con STEM. STEM es cualquier área relacionada con Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería o Matemáticas. El Smithsonian Science Education Center descubrió que habrá 2,4 millones de puestos de STEM vacantes en 2018 debido a la falta de candidatos calificados. his is the most prestigious honor an academic Institution can receive. It’s awarded by the department of education in Washington D.C. This is Doral Academy’s third Blue Ribbon! The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Every year the U. S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates great American schools, schools demonstrating that all students can achieve to high levels. More than 7,500 of schools across the country have been presented with this coveted award. The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. In a short address to educators during the Blue Ribbon Awards recognition ceremony was on November 7, in Washington, D.C., the Education Secretary Betsy DeVos comented: “National Blue Ribbon Schools put students at the center of everything. You recognize that a world-class education is the surest way for students to achieve their individual goals and dreams”. “America’s students are more diverse than ever,

and we all know that no child is the same as another. National Blue Ribbon Schools recognize that different students in different places have different needs. Ten Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning for Financial Security

2. Who depends on me today and who might depend on me tomorrow? This question should be at the core of your decision making process and should be answered well before you consider what you may need. Spouses, partners and children are often thought of as the most obvious dependents; however, there can be others – for example, parents, inlaws or siblings who, due to age, disability, or other circumstances, may be unable to care for themselves. Even individuals without a family have dependents – namely, themselves – since their well-being depends on their own ability to earn an income. With your list of current and potential dependents in hand, you will be better prepared to plot your course toward greater financial security.

3. Who is providing for my dependents now? Does someone in your family provide valuable non-financial support to those you care about? Think of the stay-at-home parent – they may not support their family with earned income, but the support they do provide is just as valuable as any paycheck. If a stay-at-home parent were unable to provide that support, it would surely be expensive to replace. Account for all who provide essential financial or non-financial support to your dependents. 4. What risks have I overlooked or not fully considered?

People may concentrate on the risk of premature or accidental death and overlook other risks to their well-being and livelihood (for example, a breadwinner unable to work due to illness, an aging parent unable to care for themselves, a retiree dealing with rising healthcare costs, a business owner faced with a succession problem). Evite ser víctima de fraude hipotecario vía internet

Tanto los cuerpos policiales como la Asociación Nacional de Realtors recomiendan ser muy precavidos con las transferencias electrónicas que se realizan para dar el pago inicial de una propiedad.

a compra de una vivienda es, por lo general, una de las inversiones más importantes de la vida de muchas personas, pues representa su patrimonio familiar. Desafortunadamente, es cada vez más común el fraude electrónico hipotecario, mediante el cual se ponen en el mercado propiedades fantasmas o se logra que se hagan transferencias a cuentas bancarias manejadas por estafadores. De acuerdo a la información suministrada por el Departamento de Crímenes Económicos de la Policía de Miami-Dade, el fraude electrónico es una de las formas más frecuentes de delincuencia en la sociedad actual y está sumamente vinculado a las estafas hipotecarias. Incluso, según un informe de la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI, por sus siglas en inglés), la Florida se encuentra entre las 10 principales áreas de fraude hipotecario en el país y justamente, Miami-Dade es el condado que sufre más préstamos fraudulentos en nuestro estado. Agentes policiales afirman que la forma más común de fraude electrónico hipotecario es através el uso del internet para ofrecer propiedades que realmente no están a la venta o que no pertenecen a las personas que aparentan ser los dueños. Es igualmente frecuente que los compradores sean engañados para que realicen transferencias para pago de iniciales a cuentas de banco que no tienen nada que ver con la transacción hipotecaria.

¿COMO PROTEGERSE?

En una entrevista concedida a Noticias Univisión, el capitán Carlos Arango de la Policía de Doral manifestó que los fraudes electrónicos hipotecarios pueden ocurrir todos los días, cada segundo del día, por lo que recomienda estar muy alertas al recibir instrucciones para realizar transferencias bancarias. “Por ejemplo, muchas veces los compradores reciben correos electrónicos solicitando la realización de transferencias destinadas al pago de la inicial para la compra de una vivienda. Yo les recomiendo que antes de hacerlas, llamen a su

agente de bienes raíces o a la compañía de título y verifiquen los datos de la transferencia”, explica el capitán Arango. También es una buena idea, realizar este tipo de transferencias en una agencia bancaria directamente y no desde su computadora a través de Internet, pues esto le brindará mayor seguridad y la posibilidad de confirmar los datos y las instrucciones para la realización de este tipo de transacciones. El capitán Arango agregó que, algunas veces, recibimos correos que parecen ser de nuestros bancos, pidiéndonos confirmar información personal. “Yo les sugiero, no contestar este tipo de emails, buscar en la parte posterior de su tarjeta de crédito y/o débito y llamar al banco para verificar la procedencia de ese correo”. Por su parte, la Asociación Nacional de Realtors (NAR, por sus siglas en inglés), recomienda a sus afiliados, que todas las partes involucradas en el proceso de compra-venta de una propiedad firmen un acuerdo que advierte sobre la presencia de hackers que pueden robar o alterar emails personales. Si bien, la NAR reconoce que el internet brinda la rapidez y la conveniencia sin precedentes para

administrar finanzas y realizar transacciones, es igualmente cierto que esta tecnología en comunicaciones ha hecho que nunca haya sido más fácil para los estafadores desviar fondos y/o interrumpir transacciones para dañar a sus clientes. Los mismos sistemas que le permiten acceder a los datos desde cualquier lugar, realizar aprobaciones electrónicamente y gestionar las ofertas desde su teléfono inteligente son imanes para delincuentes sofisticados. Para operar de forma segura en línea, debe proteger activamente la información sensible de los piratas informáticos, mantenerse alejado de los correos electrónicos que pueden tomar sus datos para usurpar su identidad y evitar navegar en sitios web peligrosos. La NAR también aconseja a los compradores que, cuando busquen una propiedad, lo hagan a través de empresas especializadas, con prestigio y un reconocimiento comprobable dentro del mercado inmobiliario, pues estas compañías de Real Estate verifican que todas las ofertas sean auténticas antes de anunciarlas y tienen la información personal, financiera y de contacto de todas las partes involucradas en el proceso. Es importante tener en cuenta que un agente inmobiliario jamás le solicitará dinero sin antes tener un contrato de compra-venta. Los estafadores, suelen pedir montos como condición para la realización del contrato, para apartar la casa, para quitarla del mercado o bien, el equivalente al enganche de la propiedad. Jamás caiga en esta trampa. En líneas generales, es importante encriptar todos los correos electrónicos con información confidencial, lo que le permite ocultar datos mediante una clave para que no puedan ser interpretados por personas que no tengan esa clave; no usar correos electrónicos personales; utilizar contraseñas complicadas y cambiarlas de forma periódica; no usar Wi-Fi de sitios públicos, como cafés, restaurantes o tiendas y obviamente, no abrir emails sospechosos. Sea precavido!!

Rosanna D’Amico de Ambrosino: La embajadora del Zulia en Caracas

osanna D’Amico es, definitivamente, una mujer consagrada a las artes. Ella dirigió por 25 años el Centro de Arte Euroamericano, mejor conocido como Galería Euroamericana, ubicada en las urbanizaciones caraqueñas de Altamira y Las Mercedes, y que se distinguió por promover el arte joven venezolano y el zuliano de manera especial, por lo que le dieron en Maracaibo el cariñoso apodo de “La Embajadora del Zulia en Caracas”. Esta prestigiosa galería de arte, que funcionó en Caracas, desde el año 1975 y hasta el 2002, abrió en 1991 sucursal en Miami, con el nombre “Ambrosino Gallery”, operando primero en Coral Gables, luego en North Miami y finalmente, en Wynwood donde cerró en el año 2008. “Bajo la dirección de mi hijo, Genaro Ambrosino, nos dedicamos en los primeros años a exponer y promocionar el arte venezolano y por supuesto, zuliano en Estados Unidos”, comenta la señora D’Amico. Cuando le pregunté acerca de que estudios realizó para convertirse en galerista, la señora D’Amico me contó con nostalgia que ella nunca tuvo un aprendizaje académico de las artes y que empezó a vincularse a ellas casi que por casualidad. “Fue mi esposo, Michele Ambrosino, quien a través de su hermano menor Ferdinando (que es artista plástico), quien decidió abrir galería en Caracas y como él tenía su trabajo, yo me dediqué a atenderla y siendo osada, cometiendo errores y aprendiendo de ellos fue que me convertí en galerista”.

Para la señora D’Amico estos fueron años de mucho aprendizaje, visitando estudios de artistas, museos, otras galerías y viendo exposiciones, para hacerse de una educación empírica que se fue reforzando con el olfato que desarrolló para descubrir a nuevas estrellas en el campo de las artes. Cabe destacar que, entre finales de los 80’s y toda la década de los 90’s, hubo siempre algún artista representado por la Galería Euroamericana que fue premiado en algún salón de Venezuela o exposiciones internacionales.

Como ya apuntamos, con los años, Rosanna D’Amico se enamoró del arte del Zulia y se dedicó a impulsar la llamada “Escuela de Maracaibo”, cuyos integrantes siempre fueron apoyados por ella. Como punto culminante, en 1984, el entonces comisionado de Venezuela para la Bienal de Venecia, Roberto Guevara, escogió a tres artistas de Maracaibo representados por la Galería Euroamericana (Henry Bermúdez, Ángel Peña y Carmelo Niño) para que representaran a Venezuela en la Bienal de ese año, aunque por razones politicas Venezuela acabó no participando. Sin embargo, debido a su gran calidad, estos tres artistas acabaron participando en la edicion siguiente de la Bienal en 1986 cuando fueron seleccionados de nuevo para ella por el entonces comisionado de Venezuela, el doctor Rafael Pineda. “A parte de estos tres artistas, también tuvimos el honor de representar a artistas de la talla de Felipe Herrera, Ernesto Zalez, Adonay Duque, Carlos Zerpa, Luis Lizardo, Víctor Hugo Irazabal, Alessandro Balteo, Jose Bedia, Florencio Gelabert, Emerio Dario Lunar, Pedro Angel Gonzalez y muchos otros”. El prestigio de la Galería Euroamericana fue tal que, incluso Sofia Imber, directora del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, fue fiel seguidora de la obra de Rosanna D’Amico y pedía ver las exposiciones un día antes de la inauguración para escoger de primera mano y antes que nadie la pieza o piezas que consideraba que merecían estar en la colección del museo que dirigía. Muchos de los artistas que la Galería Euroamericana apoyaba fueron presentados en diversos confines del planeta pues la visión de Rosanna D’Amico siempre fue la de exportar el arte venezolano y zuliano y a partir de 1989, comenzó a participar en ferias internacionales, entre las que destacaron Art Miami, Art Chicago, Tokyo International Art Expo, Art Asia (Hong Kong) y Gramercy en Nueva York, Los Angeles y Miami. Debido a que el enfoque y pasión de la señora D’Amico

era impulsar el arte joven venezolano y zuliano, no fueron muchos los artistas extranjeros presentados en su galería, pero hubo exposiciones memorables como, por ejemplo, las de Andre Masson, José Bedia, Lyle Ashton Harris, Manuel Hernández, Novello Finotti, Florencio Gelabert, del mismo Ferdinando Ambrosino, Bruno Cassinari, Elvio Becheroni y Gerda Gruber, por nombrar sólo unos pocos En el 2002, la Galería Euroamericana cerró sus puertas por motivos de salud de la señora D’Amico, quien en el 2015, decidió trasladare a Miami. “Tenía muchísimas obras que mi esposo y yo acumulamos durante años. Era una colección de 2 mil piezas de arte venezolano, así que me traje unas 700 obras, otras las regalé a familiares y amigos, pero la gran mayoría, (más de mil) las doné al Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia (MACZUL), “Decidí hacer esta donación como un gesto de agradecimiento a una región que me dio tanto a mí y a la Galería Euroamericana y también para premiar el esfuerzo de una institución que aun hoy en día se resiste a recibir fondos del gobierno para su funcionamiento, porque quiere mantener su independencia cultural y artística y no someterse a las directrices del régimen de gobierno en Venezuela”. Por esta donación, la más grande en número jamás efectuada por un coleccionista privado a un museo de Venezuela, Rosanna D’Amico recibió, en febrero del 2016, la Orden Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia en su única Clase y se destinó, de manera permanente, una de las salas de este museo a la colección AmbrosinoD’Amico.

Our veterans deserves continuing state funding for Veterans Court By Jose “Pepe” Diaz

ne of my proudest accomplishments of the last several years has been my role in helping create the Miami-Dade County Veterans Treatment Court. As chairman of the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board, I teamed up with several federal and state partners, under the leadership of Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez, to create a Miami-Dade Veterans Treatment Court to route veterans to the county’s mental health and drug court programs so they can complete rehabilitation instead of jail terms following an arrest. The very first Veterans Treatment Court in MiamiDade County came to fruition in January and it has already addressed the needs of over 50 veterans in the short time it has been in existence. It is truly a lifesaver for many of our veterans. The first two veterans who completed the program – United States Army Michael Schmeke and United States Soldier Elliot Lovette – were able to get their lives back on track thanks to this program. As a United States Marine and the Military Liaison for Miami-Dade County, I take veterans’ issues very

seriously, so it gives me great pleasure to be in a position to advocate for those who have fought to defend our nation and protect our way of life. I’m thrilled that earlier this year I was able to secure additional funding for this lifesaving program from the state and the U.S. Department of Justice. I’m also very proud of the fact that the Military Affairs Board contributed an additional $75,000 over the next three years. But as our veteran population continues to grow, we need to ensure that the Veterans Treatment Court receives much needed additional financial support. That’s why I have sponsored legislation urging the Florida Legislature to provide the necessary funding to serve our heroes. We will continue to seek a permanent, residual payment to the Miami-Dade County Veterans Treatment Court to help as many veterans as possible. In the words of President Ronald Reagan “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children’s children what it was once like

in the United States.” The men and women who elect to be in the Miami-Dade County Veterans Treatment Court have served our great nation, it is our turn to serve them in their time of need.
