A ‘Way of Life’ Responds to the Pandemic

There’s a serendipity in the universe that sometimes connects the right people to the right events at the right time. This was Chris Hecht’s sense of things 14 months ago, as COVID-19 arrived on the Door Peninsula. Hecht has worked in various public service capacities since 1989. Since 2002, he has served as Chief of the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Fire Department and has been an active Emergency Services Paramedic for almost 30 years. When the plague of COVID didn’t go away within a few weeks’ time, as most of us then expected, Hecht began pulling public services together in creative ways to provide backup for residents. As a muchvisited tourism community, Hecht says Door County had additional complications to consider in keeping everyone safe, both residents and visitors.

On Thursday, March 12, 2020, the Scandia Village retirement community in Sister Bay sealed itself off to the outside world in an attempt to protect its residents. When a local history of the pandemic is written, that day may be seen as the moment everything changed, as businesses throughout the county started temporarily closing. By Tuesday, March 17, the Door County Fire Chiefs Association met for the first time and created the Door County Emergency Support Coalition (DCESC), eventually leading to coordination with the Door County Public Health Department and a small army of volunteers.

What began as an effort to help people quarantined with COVID to receive meds and groceries soon blossomed into a system to aid anyone who felt isolated. As the year moved on, the new Coalition stepped in to help thousands of local residents, delivering food and meds to nursing homes, helping insure Meals on Wheels could continue, and assisting individuals who were unable or afraid to leave home. “Reassurance” was the goal, says Hecht, to let people know there was someone to call for assistance – everything from supplies to voting access to vaccination scheduling.

As the effort progressed, Hecht learned of software that matched volunteers to tasks, soon resulting in 683 volunteers who provided over 11,000 hours of community service, including on a major group effort, a “Farm to Table” food event.

Months into the pandemic, the Coalition assisted in establishing and manning the vaccination clinics that began to proliferate, possibly its most important contribution to management of the crisis. In partnership with Sue Powers, head of the Door County Public Health Department, “drive through” vaccination clinics were set up throughout the county, including on Washington Island. The Coalition aided in both set-up and coordination of traffic flow and paperwork with an aggressive energy that resulted in Door County leading the state in the percentage of vaccinations provided to the overall population, 50% as of April 2021. An overall decline in the demand for services by that point was seen as evidence the horizon had clear skies developing.

“I’m most proud of our Fire Chiefs in coming together the way we did,” Chris says today. “Early in this challenging year, they took a leadership role, even as we realized we had no idea what we were facing. We had to listen and then jump in. What began with ten Fire Chiefs has morphed into a volunteer organization and support group that became far greater than several separate agencies could ever be.”

The community has signaled its agreement. At the annual meeting of the United Way of Door County on April 8, 2021, the Door County Fire Chiefs Association was awarded the prestigious Bob Stiefvater “Magnificent” Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing “each and every one” involved in the pandemic effort of the past 14 months, noting that “This is Door County doing what Door County does best, and this award recognizes your efforts to uphold those principles.”

County Adjusts The

in a Trying Year & Transforms

We can all look back on the last year and recount our struggles. Yet there is hope; a glimmer of progress that shines through our period of mourning as we wield hardship to create, innovate, and find meaning. After we tossed the ball of uncertainty around, what emerged was clarity, for when we know what we do not want, the vision for what we do want becomes the new goal. Before Covid many people were feeling rushed, overwhelmed and stressed-out, yearning for a break from the proverbial rat race. The first three months of home stay was a welcome respite. Parents got to spend precious time with their kids, office staff worked from home, we all had permission to slow down.

With fatigue and the continuation of an imposed lifestyle, clarity began to take shape. Some parents tired of homeschooling and appreciated teachers in a new light while others embraced the at-home experiment. Some staff felt more productive working from home without the distractions of the office, while others found they worked better with collaboration. Some felt the intensity of socialization created pressure, while others were willing to take risks just to connect. Clarity gave us direction and direction gave us purpose.

In Door County, the “thumb” of Wisconsin, direction and purpose inspired innovation, modernization and modification to help us continue to live, grow and serve through this unprecedented year. That journey is illustrated by stories from different hospitality businesses.

Retail

The challenge of COVID created opportunities, according to Megan O’Meara, owner of O’Meara’s Irish House in Fish Creek. “We did a complete revamp of our business, from rearranging the store to make more space, to streamlining our online sales.”

O’Meara hired a full-time associate to keep her online presence up-to-date, focused on social media posting to engage with customers, offered curbside pickup and local delivery, and provided Zoom-based virtual trunk shows from Ireland. “I had to cancel five of my holiday trunk shows, so virtual trunk shows allowed me to show my customers our new products. And I was able to reach my vendors through virtual trade shows, so I could continue to purchase fresh new merchandise,” O’Meara said.

Although the start of the season was intimidating, with at-times puzzling information from the local health department and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), over time O’Meara’s staff was able to relieve customer apprehensions. “With masks, people couldn’t tell if you were smiling, so we were extra mindful to be welcoming and kind,” she said.

Dining

As closures began a year ago, Chives’ owner JR Schoenfeld, and his bar manager, sommelier and son Lucas Schoenfeld, had to answer big questions like how can we stay open, how can we cater to the community, how can we have affordable meals for those who lost their jobs, how can we be socially distanced, how can we offer food that caters to multiple segments of the market?

The challenges required a fresh eye and a willingness to redefine the restaurant.

First, Chives offered family meals to go. Then, “while we were closed, we wanted to serve the community, and so we gave away meals to those in need,” Lucas said. “Throughout the year we’ve done a great job keeping customers and employees safe by rearranging the dining room and bar and encouraging safe practices.”

Owner JR reconstructed a part of the dining room to add an outdoor patio, thus allowing enough tables to supplant the ones lost on the inside.

“Everything was done while we were in limbo, but we just kept adjusting as needed,” said Lucas Schoenfeld.

The Schoenfelds added two food trucks to the adjoining property for takeout and outdoor dining, and to support clientele anxious about dining inside.

“One truck has pizza service and the other has reasonably-priced comfort food,” Lucas Schenfeld said. “The food truck service allowed us to hit everyone’s price point. Thanks to COVID, we got to see our business differently.”

Performing Arts

One of the most daunting and complicated potential openings post-COVID has been indoor theater, which involves unions for actors and technicians, construction of air purification systems, multiple testing of actors, pod distancing and housing for outof-town staff. All Door County theaters were forced to close for the 2020 season and as of this writing, the 2021 season is largely still up for grabs. Without in-person staging of plays, two local theater companies were still able to do some incredible works off-stage.

Northern Sky Theater found new and courageous opportunities to reach their audiences, starting with an annual fundraising event, Raise the Curtain. Normally a limited access house party event, by taking it online the theater was able to reach a broader audience than usual. “Over 400 households engaged with our reimagined event and we more than doubled our fundraising dollars from previous years,” Artistic Director Jeff Herbst said. “The proceeds were shared with our artists, who would be out of work for the foreseeable future.”

Online, the theater produced 124 at-home videos, an artist marketplace benefitting the artists, 37 virtual season events, readings and workshops of new shows, and 28 episodes of the Jeff & Katie Show live via Facebook and Instagram, just to name a few projects. “If you visit our website (northernskytheater.com) right now, you’ll be immediately assured that Northern Sky is still bursting with creativity, as distinctive and quirky as ever,” Herbst said. “None of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of our key staff on both the artistic and administrative sides of our theater.”

When Peninsula Players had to cancel their season, they met with their audience through a weekly interview series, Peninsula Players Presents. The interviews provided a glimpse of the unique people who make theater happen. Then the theater embarked on telling the history of the Players. Business Manager and Archivist Audra Baakari Boyle chatted with Artistic Director Greg Vinkler in Zoom interview sessions that started with the inception of Peninsula Players by the Fisher Family in 1935. “We never would have had the time to do this project during a normal season,” said Brian Kelsey, Managing Director.

This fascinating unfolding of Players lore can be accessed on the theater’s website (peninsulaplayers.com) by going to About and History and click here to view Peninsula Players Presents-The History of the Theatre. “So much of what was happening at the Players was also creating connections to emerging organizations that are a staple today,” Kelsey said.

In a late Spring announcement that could be a harbinger of good news from other nonprofit arts organizations in Door County, Artistic Director Jim Berkenstock said Midsummer’s Music had now scheduled a number of indoor and outdoor performances for the 2021 season. The schedule will include performances at the Kress Pavilion and Woodwalk Gallery, both in Egg Harbor, and the Berkenfeld Estate in Baileys Harbor. Peninsula School of Art

Classes

What about organizations that focus on classes, like Peninsula School of Art? With the cancellation of in-person classes, the nonprofit needed to serve both the community of artists and local students and children who were home-bound and yearning for activities. “We realized the need for parents to have activities for their kids at home, so instead of the monthly Family Art Day we created free take-home art kits that parents could pick up and create works together with their kids,” Executive Director Catherine Hoke said. “It was super popular. To date we’ve distributed over 1,000 kits.”

The reorganized season brought local group discussions online, both Conversations on Creativity and the monthly Critique Group. “Going online actually broadened the scope and landed on a larger audience and a more diverse discussion. We were now hearing from people from around the country,” Hoke said. The Door County Plein Air Festival also went online. The opportunities compelled the staff to learn Zoom interviewing, video editing and publishing an online auction catalog, things that might not have happened in a normal year. “We changed our social media feed to fill people up and keep them connected,” said Hoke.

During this time, the Peninsula School of Art was also working on a capital campaign to revitalize the campus with new buildings and updates to existing facilities. With the fundraising campaign reaching the halfway point and the push for donations on hold, “We realized we first needed to focus on what we were going to build, so we could open safely for the 2021 season,” Hoke said. Plans for a youth wing and an additional adult studio are both at the top of the list. “Class sizes will be smaller this year,” said Hoke, “but we felt it was better to be open safely than stay closed another season.”

Ed Fenendael, who teaches watercolor classes at his studio/ gallery, Morning Mist Studio at Windmill Farm, said that after the initial shut down, he needed to reorganize in order to keep the business active and participants safe. “We had to limit the class sizes, but then added more classes to accommodate the number of people,” Ed said. “It was a trying year but what we’ve gained from this is a deepened empathy and care for one another.”

Ed has been an artist for over 40 years and has taught at the Kansas City Art Institute as a visiting faculty member as well as workshops in the U.S., Mexico and Europe, although the trips

were cancelled last year. Along with spouse Frank Villigan, the couple runs studio classes, a B&B and a gallery showing both their work and a curated selection of antiques in a beautiful garden setting. Villigan said they’ve reconfigured their guest accommodations so each room would have its own private bath, along with separate breakfast seatings. “We’re doing everything we can to accommodate our guests with cleaning practices, masks and distancing,” Villigan said. “I’m hoping this next year will be a good one. People are ready to get out there and explore the world again.”

Lodging

When it comes to multi-unit hotels, the concerns are a bit different. In Sister Bay, Birchwood Lodge Manager Roman Collak said he had been closely monitoring the development of the pandemic in Europe, anticipating “creating safety protocols and material support ahead of time. We were ready with safety precautions, equipment and exposure mitigation measures like ozone machines, HEPA filters in HVAC systems, an ozone laundry washing system, and ultraviolet (UV) air treatment in common areas when it hit the U.S. We shut our doors early,” said Collak, “in order to prevent the spread and buy some time to protect our aging local community.”

When the doors reopened at Birchwood Lodge, Collak said his team was ready and confident that they were providing a safe and enjoyable environment. “We tweaked protocols in excess of requirements by the local health department and CDC guidelines,” said Collak. ”We’ve built our marketing around it and used it to our advantage to attract customers. Thanks to our safety measures, we were able to maintain a decent level of business through the summer season with minimized the effect on the

bottom line. Utilizing the PPP and EIDL loans and lodging grants made it possible for businesses to go through these hurdles and bring employees back.”

The biggest challenge was operating with limited staff without seasonal international workers. “We were not able to operate to capacity because of this,” Collak said. “The problem reached a different magnitude and exposed how fragile and dependent our community is.”

Collak noted there are exciting developments in the hospitality industry, contactless technology like credit card systems that don’t require handling or swiping and settling billings electronically. “It opened new ways of how to communicate with customers, how to check hotel guests in and out with more efficiency, and without the need of personal interactions,” Collak said. “The pandemic showed us a new way to conduct business, and I believe many of the features will not only stay in place but they will evolve exponentially even after this whole thing blows over. The safety measures might just become the new norm for conducting a high-volume traffic business. Let’s hope it has also brought humility, understanding, compassion and selflessness to mankind.”

Weddings

Carrie Baldwin Smith, owner of Door County Event Planners, said the pandemic created the opportunity to create smaller, more intimate gatherings for couples tying the knot. Many weddings were postponed initially, but couples eventually wanted to get started in their lives together, so Baldwin got creative with safe yet special wedding planning. Her job involved “putting the wind back into sails” for couples who wouldn’t be able to have the event they had expected. “My job description changed from Planner to Psychologist,” Baldwin said. “Events went from 150 guests to 10 guests. Smaller weddings became very popular.”

She moved most events to outside venues and used larger tents with the tables spaced six feet apart and family-only seating arrangements. “I enjoyed the outside atmosphere and the smaller events,” said Baldwin. “I’ll continue to express to others how a smaller wedding can be much more intimate and personal than larger guest counts.”

Helene Ingsten-Anderson, owner of Flora Flower Shop in Sister Bay, a ‘floral design studio’ supplying one-of-a-kind

arrangements for large and small weddings, agreed with Carrie Baldwin Smith that the smaller weddings turned out to be more beautiful and heartfelt. “The event became about being together with family near and dear,” she said. “The focus was on the core group.”

Without the expense of a big wedding, couples put their money into the beauty of the occasion, spending more on flowers, photography and videography. “Technology is coming into play more and more but the events are getting smaller and more intimate,” Ingsten-Anderson said.

She also noted that people are getting closer to nature by moving outdoors. “Many felt that a unique experience wasn’t exactly what they had planned, but that it turned out to be even better. With less stress and not having to produce a big event, families were more present. There were many sweet moments,” said Ingsten-Anderson.

She also found that people were sending more bouquets of flowers to the loved ones they were separated from. “It became a way to bring cheer to a parent or grandparent,” she said.

Outdoor Activities

“Every outdoor industry had a banner year,” said Brian “Stretch” Merkel, owner of Nor Dor Sport & Cyclery in Fish Creek and Sturgeon Bay. “As an essential business, we were open through all of it.” This was a year of heightened demand as people took to the outdoors and even extended into a winter “fat tire bike” season.

With the demand, however, Merkel is still backordered on new bikes. “Trek Bikes has a million bikes on back order and we’re waiting for 1,079 bikes,” he said. “Many of the bicycles and parts come from Asia and supply hasn’t caught up, even for replacement parts.”

With the increased bike rentals, Brian noted that people stayed outdoors and were very conscious of social distancing. Other than doing additional sanitizing between each customer rental, “Our business model hasn’t changed. How long it will last, though, we don’t know.”

Door County became the perfect space for outdoor activities and social distancing with its numerous golf courses, beaches, state and county parks and back roads. With so many newly-formed outdoor enthusiasts, one hopes the increased recreation, exercise and enjoyment of picnicking under a big oak tree will continue well into Door County’s future.

So what have we gained from COVID? Perspective on what we love to do, the people we love to do it with, the romance of dining al fresco, and a renewed interest and determination to get back to theater, dance concerts, music venues, sporting events and travel. Walk across the causeway between the mainland and Cana Island to visit this majestic lighthouse. Climb its 97 step staircase for sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the county.

Located on 360 acres, Waseda Farms is the county’s premier state-of-theart cattle-handling system — raising organic beef, pork and poultry. Inseason, the farm also grows fresh and flavorful produce.

This serene little village, surrounded by rolling farm fields, will surprise you. There’s fun for the entire family including a water park with kid’s fun zone, freshly brewed Door County coffee, distillery, and winery that offers tours and tastings.

Carlsville was named for five Karls who lived there in the 1800s.

This classic DC village sits on the bay. Legend says its unusual name may be from a friendly egg battle between early fur traders as they raced to shore — or from a nest of duck eggs found by the county’s first settler. Go swimming!

Historic buildings, such as the old town hall, drug store, and feed mill are now home to great shops — home decor, clothing and jewelry boutiques, souvenirs, confectioneries, olive oils, galleries and books. There’s also a health food store and gourmet grocery store.

Supper clubs, pubs, and restaurants serve homemade barbecue, steak and seafood, Italian, French, Spanish tapas and more. There’s an artisan cheese shop and microbrewery.

Donald & Carol Kress Pavilion rises above downtown Egg Harbor as a multifaceted amenity. The lower level houses reading areas, a business center, the Egg Harbor Historical Society, and a library tucked away in the alcoves. The showstopper is the Great Hall upstairs, and its wraparound patio with sweeping views of Egg Harbor.

The annual Pumpkin Patch festival is always on the first weekend in October.

This pretty little hamlet is reminiscent of old DC.

This park, at the top of the Ellison Bay hill, has one of the most breathtaking views of Green Bay in the county. A walkway leads to an observation deck, limestone bluffs, and a catwalk.

Andrew Wickman, a Swedish immigrant and farmhand, built this Scandinavian style farmhouse and developed a sustainable way of life from the land. The house has been renovated back to its original beauty and is now home to an innovative restaurant that uses local farmto-table ingredients, true to the property’s original purpose. the clearing Local landscape architect Jens Jenson founded this folk art school in 1935 — as a place to “clear one’s head” by reconnecting with nature. Hands-on classes in painting, writing, birding, nature study, and paper arts are held in a peaceful, wooded setting. Ellison Bay was founded by Danish immigrant Johan Eliasen in 1866.

This beautiful and picturesque village — dotted with pristine white clapboard buildings and picket fences — has unsurpassed views of the bay, museums, a long sandy beach, and endless ways to enjoy the water.

Go splash around in the bay!

Wander the tree-lined streets to find DC inspired art, pottery, clothes, jewelry, and beach gear. Shops, restaurants, and B&Bs are tucked away in vintage homes, rustic log cabins, and old barns.

There’s more harborview dining here than anywhere else in the county. Enjoy a Scandinavian influenced meal, a traditional fish boil, or a simple malt and burger — as you watch the sunset over the bay.

Swim, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, wind surf, parasail, or go boating. Charter fishing, a variety of boat cruises, and rental equipment are offered by local companies.

Walk under the red and white striped awning and step back in time. Malts, sundaes, and floats have been served from their oldfashioned soda fountain since 1906. Jukeboxes still play classic tunes.

This is a great place for kids to play. There’s playground equipment, a picnic area, benches, and gazebo. Concerts are held here all summer long. An ice cream shop is next door.

ephraim historical foundation museums

Learn about the village’s Scandinavian roots and history at the Anderson Store, the Anderson Barn History Center, and other museums. Walking tours, tram tours, and lectures are available.

“Dry” since its founding in 1853, Ephraim first allowed beer & wine sales in 2016.

This old fishing village is reminiscent of the New England coastline with its string of century-old white clapboard buildings, horseshoe-shaped shoreline, and sailboats floating in the bay.

Wander the charming tree-lined streets to discover a variety of shops — souvenir, clothing, jewelry, Irish imports, artwork, bath products, beach stuff, and homemade candy.

Great restaurants, eateries, and coffee shops offer many choices — modern American, Asianinspired, tavern food, and fish boils.

Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness park — 2,373 acres of forests, wetlands, and meadows. Fern Trail has interpretative panels to guide visitors through the forest. There are miles of hiking and offroad biking trails, cross-country skiing paths, beaches, and campgrounds.

This ferry carries passengers to Washington Island through the islandstudded strait of ‘Port des Mortes’. The captain narrates historical facts during the seven mile journey. Views include the Pilot and Plum lighthouses.

The last few miles of highway 42 curves and zig zags through fields and forest and ends at Northport Pier. It is one of the county’s most beautiful and photographed sites — especially in autumn when maple trees are in full color. A must see.

The business center for the Southern Door area of the Door Peninsula is rich with a life that most visitors never experience. Agriculturally driven, but just as naturally beautiful as the county’s northern region, it offers a quiet peace, and access to outdoor adventure, while also providing a gateway to a unique, surprisingly unchanged Belgian heritage.

What looks like a simple country crossroads is actually also the home to a renowned potter, the Write On, Door County arts organization (mission: everyone has a story to tell!), a chiropractor, a Lutheran church, and, as of this writing, an Italian restaurant. Initial appearances can be deceiving in Door County, so go ahead, slow down and explore…

Featuring easy land and water access to Mink River Basin, a watershed and flowage with excellent fishing, and a respectedyet-hidden lodging facility/ restaurant/bakery/fish boil site called (what else?) Rowleys Bay Resort, it’s hard to exaggerate the beauty of the view that spills out from the resort shoreline towards the Basin and out to greater Lake Michigan.

This little fishing village sits on the Green Bay shoreline in Southern Door. Increase Claflin, the county’s first settler, built a log cabin here in 1835. Today it is known for walleye, bass, and perch fishing. Its annual festival, ‘Little Sturgeon Days’ has live music, a horseshoe tournament and parade. Go fishing! Located in the town of Gardner.

This surprising little place, tucked away in the heart of the county, is surrounded by farmland. There’s a winery that offers tastings and a shop with its own products, a restaurant with a model train that entertains kids and adults alike, a friendly pub, and a pizza place with outdoor dining. Go have fun! Crossroads of Hwy E and Hwy A.

This entire island is a rustic state park and popular camping and kayaking destination. One of the island’s most unique features is a summer estate built by Icelandic inventor Chester Thordarson in 1920. Among the buildings is a limestone boathouse decorated with characters from the Norse Runic alphabet and original hand-carved Scandinavian furniture. Go visit the estate! Bob Hastings: In Memoriam

A Transformative Personality in County’s Development as Tourism Destination

If you’re going to fail, fail forward.” Kate Rispens recalls sturdy advice from her father, Bob Hastings. “Use the lesson and move forward onto the next idea.”

Bob Hastings was an idea man. “He was a dreamer, a doer and innovator,” Rispens said. “Growing up with him, I got to watch those ideas come to life.”

The list of things Bob helped create is exhaustive. The Church Hill Inn, Country Walk Shops, Green Gables, Innline, Chamber Mixers, the four-lane highway, Lighthouse Tours, Shipyard Tours, Festival of Blossoms, and more. Moving to Door County in 1979, he thought this would be a good place to raise a family. He also saw Door County as having “potential for an amazing getaway,” according to his sister, Liz Hastings-Junion.

“Our father was a huge influence on Bob,” Junion said. “I remember them sitting on the porch talking ideas. My dad was the Egg Harbor Village President and owned the Egg Harbor Lodge. They were always talking about how things could be better.”

In 1986, Bob and then-wife Madeline, along with some others, built the Churchill Inn and the Country Walk Shops in Sister Bay as a way to invigorate the sleepy town.

“My mom worked the front desk and my sister and I basically grew up there,” Rispens said. “He wanted some way to create a place for businesses to grow; to improve things for the town. I remember being put in a hotel room on Sunday mornings to watch TV and Anna and I would watch Sunday Morning Wrestling and take each other on in a wrestling match.“

When the Executive Director of the Door County Chamber of Commerce retired, Bob, who was on the board of directors, was approached to be the interim Director. Once he got started, though, he knew he had the skills to promote the county into the next generation.

“He was always well-informed and listened to people,” Junion said. “He wanted to preserve what Door County was about.”

“He wanted the Door County experience to be extraordinary,” former Visitor Bureau co-worker, Anni Lampert, said. “He had integrity and could articulate best about what was going on. He was anti billboards, about preserving the scenic byways and adding technology.”

The original version of the Go! Guide was launched by Bob Hastings in the early 1990s and published by the Chamber of Commerce until 2006. Three years later, the publication was relaunched by Door Guide Publishing.

Lampert said he was one of the best bosses you could ever wish for because he was fearless. “Once we decided on where we wanted to go, we just did it.”

“He had really great ideas and knew how to delegate,” Junion said. “He surrounded himself with talented people. He was good at fitting in, could adapt and relate and always found common ground.”

“In the early 90’s it was a scary time for businesses,” Lampert said. “Back then, you’d order your guidebook and plan your vacation. As things came online like the weather outlook and online reservations, he saw that we needed to get hotels online. He gathered programmer Greg Swain to create a program to have live vacancy reporting and kiosks in each town because there were no cell phones back then. It was revolutionary. It changed everything.”

“His vision was to stretch the tourist season by encouraging a mass daffodil planting throughout the county in order to promote the Festival of Blossoms,” Lampert said. “There was no budget to speak of, so we gathered the right people and made things work. It was so much fun!”

He also created this publication, the Door County Go Guide, which was then published by the Door County Chamber of Commerce until 2006. “It was created to promote the retailers and restaurants and he wanted it put in every hotel room,” Lampert said.

“He had a passion to create, or instigate, and he was good at getting us to go along with his ideas,” his good friend Greg “Fuzzy” Sunstrom said. One year he thought the Door Community Auditorium should have entertainment on the Fourth of July, so with two friends, he put together the funds to hire well-known musician Leon Redbone. “By the 4th we had sold no tickets,” Sunstrom recalled, “so we joined the 4th of July parade to hand out notices to come to the concert. We each made $27 after it was said and done. That night Leon went to Bob’s house and played a house concert for us well into the night. Those were the things he did.”

Her father’s greatest personal challenge, Rispens thought, was that he was an extreme perfectionist, “which can be a blessing when you want things done right. He was impatient and he wanted things to happen how he saw it,” she said. “I remember he would take a level and straighten the pictures in the house. I would poke the pictures just to mess with him.”

As Sunstrom recalls, “on a boat trip to Michigan over Labor Day we went golfing and he was so frustrated by how poorly he was playing that he threw his clubs into the garbage can.”

As Executive Director of the Door County Chamber of Commerce, Bob Hastings initiated a program in 1993 that led to the planting of 2.5 million daffodils throughout Door County.

Bob’s perfectionism never got in the way of reaching for new ideas. He tried implementing a county-wide health insurance program, a noble concept that brought collaboration with Donna Valler. a regional sales manager for an insurance company. Russ Zabler: Inspiring Jewelry Designs

How many careers were ultimately launched by the famed Peninsula School of Art, you may wonder? One such artist is Russ Zabler, who was taking PenArt photography classes back in the early 1970s. “The funny thing is, I happened to be talking to a couple of professors on the front steps of the School and Bill [Griffiths] just had this cool vibe going so I asked him what class he taught,” Zabler recounts. “He said Metal Arts, so I signed up for it and the rest is history!”

After the fateful metal arts class, Zabler didn’t return to college. “Jewelry had lit a fire in me,” Zabler said. Instead, he worked at a trade shop doing jewelry repair, then became a bench jeweler for a retailer, pursuing his own work in summer art shows. In 1983 Zabler bought a shop in Ephraim and remade it into the current Zabler Design Jewelers, and a year later also acquired a store in Clarendon Hills, IL.

Nature was immediately represented in his early jewelry pieces, he says. Zabler was inspired by “the idea that form, function and load can be represented in both jewelry and architecture.”

The use of “Design” in the business’s name is conscious, since his forte is custom design, working with clients until “an ethereal image becomes something you can touch and wear.”

Zabler offers countless alternatives for engagement rings, from antique diamond rings to peach-pink sapphire to morganite and rose gold combinations. He has an original and inventive way to inspire clients with a curated selection.

The experienced artist also reaches back in time with his rare coin collection and transforms them into one-of-a-kind pieces in his Ancient Design Series. His interest in coins took off after a Pompeii exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago. “The whole exhibit inspired me about the accessibility of 2,000-year-old artifacts. Some of the coins were minted during the time of Jesus Christ under Pontius Pilate and some during Alexander the Great’s lifetime. That I had them in my store was mind-blowing,” Zabler said.

The fire that was lit years ago will burn on. “I love the connections I get to make with individuals and being able to work with beautifully colored gems and rare objects.”

Nordic-Inspired SKÅL Showcases Modern Scandinavian Design

Anew addition to Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik sits on the southern side of its Stabbur Beer

Garden, bookending the property with another unique structure. The attractive new building, called SKÅL, carries the same attention to detail and Nordic character as the business’s original log restaurant, but without grass-chomping goats on its green sod roof. In addition, the building’s Norwegian-inspired façade with carved front posts are by the same talented folk artist who created Stabbur’s traditional designs.

The original boutique (Swedish: butik) located in Al Johnson’s main restaurant continues in operation, featuring classic Scandinavian items that the restaurant’s visitors have enjoyed for years. SKÅL offers a unique line of Nordic-sourced and other products, chosen to spotlight the clean lines and functional spirit in modern housewares and home decorating accessories.

The new store’s interior has the light and airy feeling of modern Scandinavian design. Beautiful vases and baskets filled with Danish bouquets of felt flowers immediately greet visitors. Candles and dinnerware show off Finnish-inspired crafts. Swedish goods like wool textiles from far northern Sweden abound at SKÅL, as do products from Wisconsin and Minnesota artisans who focus on Nordic-style designs. The Collaborators: Madeline Tourtelot & Jim Legault

Visionary entrepreneur Madeline Tourtelot worked with photographer Jim Legault to create a famed late 1970s portfolio of local artists that cemented the reputation of Door County as an arts destination for decades.

Fish Creek, 1965: at a time when visual artists were converging on the Door Peninsula — drawn by its beauty and affordable dwellings — artist, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and visionary Madeline Tourtelot founded the Peninsula School of Art. For her mission to promote the local arts community, Tourtelot recruited photographer Jim Legault to collaborate on a book titled Resume: A Selective Guide to Artists, Craftsmen and Galleries of Door County, Wisconsin.

The opus was designed to invite the general public “to have a look inside the arts community and what was going on, who was doing interesting work and how to get in contact with them,” Legault said recently. “The instructors and guest artists she brought to the community via the Art School shaped it in profound ways, legitimized it and were part of the draw for future artists. Madeline understood the need to bring some attention to our arts community. She was essential in keeping things going forward.”

Legault described a time before Peninsula Players was launched as a nonprofit. When Tourtelot heard they needed assistance, “she bailed them out to keep them in business. She always helped in any way she could. Then, when the Players had their 50th anniversary, she sent me over to work on a book to celebrate the event, called The First Fifty Years. She also sent me to work with Jim Dutton at Birch Creek for two summers to help get them noticed. These

are things she did on a regular basis. When she knew someone was having a problem or needed encouragement, she would order a commission. She had that attitude to see things work, to make things work. And her ideas were always something fun.”

She was passionate about the prosperity and improvement of the arts community—and that was the purpose of the 1977 Resume publication. It was sold at shops and bookstores around the county. Some artists would give it to clients to promote their work.

According to Legault, there was already a base of artists living here by the 1970s with the Peninsula School of Art as the centerpiece of their activity and community. “Back then you’d buy an old place and fix it up. Because the financial pressures weren’t so intense, people had more time to engage in the community and freedom to do their art,” he said.

Jeanne Aurelius , co-owner of Clay Bay Pottery in Ellison Bay, remembers buying their property in 1976 with only $5,000 down—but then it needed to be fixed up. “My parents had a gift shop in Sister Bay and they encouraged us to move up here and

found us these two buildings,” Jeanne said. “I remember in those days we had more time for big potlucks and volleyball parties. It was an honor to be included in the artist community. Madeline was very encouraging and interested in what we were doing.”

In 1982, Legault created a second edition of the publication, Resume II: Creative Pursuits on the Door Peninsula, to continue the promotion. “This generated at least three full pages of publicity through other newspapers and publications,” Legault said. “The additional publicity highlighted what was going on up here. From that point on, articles about Door County artists proliferated.”

In the combined books, 77 local artists were highlighted; today, 32 have passed on and 45 are still living. So where are they now? Many remain in Door County doing their craft, others have retired, and some have left the area.

ing needed a lot of work and George spent a part of each season updating it.” They moved permanently to Fish Creek in 1995 when George retired from teaching art at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. They sold the gallery in 2018 and Gloria continues to weave for her own enjoyment.

Watercolor painter Charles L. Peterson , now in his 90s, “occasionally creates art for his own pleasure but is retired from producing work to be sold in galleries or taking commissions,” his daughter, Beth Peterson, said.

Painter Peter Steinmetz had a gallery at The Settlement in Fish Creek back when it was an artist’s settlement to live and work on-premises. He left the county to enter the world of high tech marketing in Madison

as a Communications Manager. “I have many good memories at The Settlement,” he recalls today. Now retired, he is “painting up a storm. I have some work at The Paint Box Gallery and some which I’m planning on selling on Etsy and my web site.”

The growth of the arts was an important movement for the county, and they continue to draw new and young artists to establish themselves in this beautiful environment. Note that the photos accompanying this article are all of artists who are alive and well, still living and working in beautiful Door County. — Marise Redmann

IN MEMORIAM:

Painter Karsten Topelmann (07-14-29 – 02-13-21) died just this past winter. He was a beloved local artist, known equally for his exquisite watercolor and oil paintings and a kind heart. Karsten had a gentle demeanor and velvety, soft-spoken voice infused with good humor. Along with his wife, artist Ellen Sprogo Topelmann, the couple created the Hanseatic Art Gallery in Ephraim, where guests were treated to living room hospitality as they sat in their respective chairs and invited all to chat. The Hanseatic Art Gallery will be open for its 50th and final season in 2021, giving people the opportunity to acquire remaining original artwork.

Sue Jarosh is a well-known personality in Door County. For 31 years, she and husband Joe busily tended Jacksonport Craft Cottage Gifts – a popular shop on Highway 57, stocked with craft supplies and handcrafted goods from all over Wisconsin. She was often asked if the shop sold children’s books, especially books about lighthouses. At that time there weren’t any, but Jarosh remembers telling herself “Someday, I’ll write that story.”

Always active in the Jacksonport Historical Society, after retiring in 2015 Jarosh quickly became a lighthouse tour guide. While assigned to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park, she learned abundant tales of lighthouse life...and still remembered her intent to someday write a children’s book.

The plot came to her at Eagle Bluff when a visitor spotted an old mouse trap and identified it as “an iron kitty.” The description prompted her imagination and led her to write her first book, “Lighthouse Mouse.” The story ultimately combined historical photos of the rooms at Eagle Bluff Lighthouse with the tale of the lighthouse keeper’s children, who search for the lighthouse light’s lost key.

The success of that book, and the fun she had creating it, brought Jarosh to her second book, “Lighthouse Hero.” The plot features Jarosh’s abundant research on the lighthouse’s actual history. Unable to use old photos of the lighthouse keeper, the innovative Jarosh created photos of her own grandchildren, dressed in period clothing from the Ephraim Historical Foundation. Photo enhancement gave the photos a vintage look. The story also features the history of the Anderson Store and Dock, brought to life with “Then” and “Now” images.

Her third book includes results from her Door County Advocate research, where she discovered the Larson family, who maintained Baileys Harbor’s well-known Range Light. The family’s unique skill for making pets of wild crows inspired the story “Range Light Rascal,” a tale with insight into the life of Emma Toft, locally famous for The Ridges.

Jarosh’s next book is “Madeline’s Magical Balloon,” a fast-paced tour that takes readers to 43 locations enjoyable to children and families. The productive writer already knows the topic of her fifth book, the iconic Cana Island.

What’s more magical than waking up to frost-covered grasses, spiked with frozen dew, illuminating the earth in an ethereal wonderland? Listen to the eerie guttural howls of the lake making ice, resonating like the soundtrack of a sci-fi film. Look up to a dark grey sky of giant, fluffy snowflakes slowly falling, when the silence is not heard but felt, like a physical pressure of lusty breathing and drumming heartbeat. The deep polar freeze brings out the Scandinavian in each of us. We load the wood burner, don our thick sweaters, slip into shearling-lined mocs, finally given permission to sit and…read a book!

Many think of Door County in terms of summertime memories, filled with beaches, ice cream, and riotous fun. But what the average visitor might not see is the spectacular beauty and engag -

ing events of other seasons. I’ve been asked the question SO many times. “Is there anything open in winter?” Or “What is there to do?” I chuckle and reply that we live here year-round and yes, some places are open. And I tell them there are so many good things to explore outdoors, especially silent sports!

Even without snow, you can ice skate, go ice fishing, ice boating, and kite skating. Unbelievably, you can often feed wild birds like chickadees right from your hand in Newport and Peninsula State Parks, among other locations. There are two big ice rinks, one in Sturgeon Bay on Memorial Field, located near the high school. The other, Theresa Highlander Ice Rink, is at the sports complex in Sister Bay, where you can both rent skates and enjoy a pick-up hockey game.

Snow-based activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking abound in all five of the state parks, the Ridges Sanctuary, Crossroads at Big Creek and the 14 Land Trust preserve sites. Enjoy skate/ski trails, fat tire biking, downhill sledding and snowmobiling. The Door County Snowmobile clubs welcome snowmobilers to explore the 250 miles of state and club trails from Kewaunee County to the top of the thumb in Gills Rock. Plus, there are ski, snowshoe and inner tube rentals at various local outfitters.

George Burr: An AwardWinning Artist Rediscovers the Artistic Life

George Burr recognized early in life that he was drawn to the life of the artist. As a 15-year-old high school student in Wausau, he was driven to attend an art training camp in Kansas on his own. He enrolled, prepped, packed, and traveled to the school with his parents blessing, but he put the entire plan into motion.

Burr originally started working with pastels as a budding artist in the 8th grade, he says, and soon found himself winning painting contests, including one notable win for his “Peninsula Road” painting.

After college, an MBA in accounting, and a long stint in the corporate world, Burr fortuitously met Chicago-area artist Gary Wick, he says, who soon introduced him to new painting materials and reawakened his interest in being a full-time artist. Wick became his mentor, and Burr soon found himself doing new award-winning artwork. His chosen medium of dry pastel, and his interest in landscapes, pushed him into an “artistic breakthrough” with a painting called “Susan’s Field,” launching him towards a rapid lifestyle change in Door County.

By 2005, Burr had opened his own gallery in Ephraim, and is now marking his 17th year as a full-time Door County-based artist. Burr describes his style as “photographic,” and often fools the eye of the beholder with detail so fine it seems to be a photograph. Trees are one of his favorite challenges, and the landscapes he chooses are always of Door County and its vistas.

“I discovered very quickly that as good as they might be, landscapes of the Rocky Mountains are not what people who travel to Door County are interested in seeing,” Burr says today. Some of us recognize immediately what we should do with our lives and where we want to focus our creative energies. Katie Musolff is one of those people, blessed with singular artistic intention at a very young age. Growing up near Milwaukee, the southern Wisconsin artist attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Today, she is still a working artist, following her passion through every day of her life.

After meeting husband and fellow artist Andy Fletcher, the two decided to launch their new careers while living in Stoddard, WI, near the backwaters of the Mississippi River. Focusing on watercolor and gouache as her chosen media, Katie was initially a portrait artist. The natural world soon claimed her attention, however, and became her main source of inspiration. In Stoddard, she says, she “discovered a richly layered natural world, teeming with specimens to collect, and stories to tell.”

The she would paint a still life of the collected forest detritus, in nearly photographic detail. “I paint from direct observation,” she says, “trying to preserve the sense of wonder that drew me to these beautiful collections in the first place.”

“I don’t set up a scene,” Musolff notes, she simply arranges her mementos in an order that is synergistic to her way of seeing them. She explains that her technique is widely known as “trompe l’oeil,” an artistic trick of the eye defined as “using realistic imagery to create an optical illusion of depth.”

From the banks of the Mississippi, Katie and Andy have now returned to the eastern side of the state, finding a farm just north of Milwaukee, where they are passionate about both gardening and their respective artistic endeavors. Musolff says her art helps her say “stop and look” to its viewers, to take closer notice of what “grows up between the cracks in the pavement, or what you hit with your car yesterday.” In that fashion, she hopes to elevate the importance of the smaller things that make up our world and call others to notice them, too.

Musolff’s work is seen often in the pages of this publication. Birch Creek’s 46th Season

From mid-June to mid-August each summer, Birch Creek Music Performance Center welcomes students and faculty to the campus for four, twoweek Academy Sessions in Percussion & Steel Band, Symphony and Big Band Jazz. The campus is set in a beautiful rural landscape located three miles east of Egg Harbor and welcomes advanced music students and faculty performing artists who study and teach by day and present nearly 30 concerts at night. This year – 2021 –the season has been modified to include half capacity enrollment and concerts staged outside in front of the the Dutton Concert Barn. Audience members will be seated on sturdy benches socially-distanced around the stage and the Jackie and Steve Kane Gazebo. Concertgoers also have the option to bring their own lawn chair for a reduced ticket price of $15. Faculty and students also perform a full range of public outreach concerts at outdoor venues around Door County. Opening night is on Thursday, June 17th at 7:00 pm with pre-concert music at 6:30 pm.

Northern Sky Theater

There’s nothing like a night of professional, affordable, original musical theater at Northern Sky. Both at their pinerimmed amphitheater in Peninsula State Park and at their intimate, state-of-the-art Gould Theater, Northern Sky creates and performs musicals in, about, and for Door County.

Rogue Theater – Part of DC’s Theater Fabric

2021 marks Rogue Theater’s 9th season. A hidden theater treasure, the theater is a testament to the talent that abounds year-round. Through years of fundraising, ticket sales, generous donations, and community support, Rogue Theater has positioned itself to be a fixture for years to come. And this fall, they move into their permanent theater space in Sturgeon Bay. Headline shows this season include “ The Case of the Mysterious Cravat ” in June. The Case of the Mysterious Cravat – An Inspector Giles Murder Mystery, is mixed with jealousy and romance. For July, the stage is set for “A Bad Year for Tomatoes”. Fed up with the pressures and demands of her acting career, Myra leases a house in New England to write her autobiography, but the nosy neighbors have other plans. The laughs continue into August, with “A Night in the Theatre ,” where Margaret and Stanley Locker and their friends are at the theatre for their weekly dose of culture. Radio companies have more often than not been leaders in developing new ideas and one that faces challenges are concerts and events. Often vital to corporate radio’s bottom line, the bigger the brand, the bigger the party.

But for Door County’s own, fm 106.9 the Lodge, the post-covid return of the annual station created event, the New Year’s Eve Cherry Drop,™ will play more of a role in supporting the community than adding to a bottom line.

Is Control an Illusion?

You don’t have control, you never had control, you never will have control,” says author, speaker and professor, Dr. Srikumar Rao. “What you have is the illusion of control.” Rao says that attempting to control some part of our internal and external environment helps us get up in the morning, make plans and execute them. But when things don’t go as planned all we truly have control of is our thoughts.

“Thoughts are things,” famous words by author Napoleon Hill in his 1937 book, “Think and Grow Rich,” are what philosophers and authors have expounded on saying you create your reality just by thinking. So when things go wrong we need to consider the 75% of negative mental chatter in people’s minds.

According to Raj Raghunathan Ph.D., author of “If You’re So Smart, why Aren’t You Happy?,” wrote in Psychology Today, “Spontaneously occurring negative thoughts are not randomly occurring thoughts that come out of nowhere; rather, they are rooted in deep-seated goals, desires, and values.” Many belief systems we never even question.

Rao says we focus on the negative because of our rigid expectations of how we think life should be. “When things don’t go the way we want, we feel out of control and this is the cause of stress.” Yet what goes ‘wrong’ may be setting you up for something better. Rao says to approach these moments asking, “Good thing, bad thing, who knows?”

“Success does not come from success,” Sumner Redstone, billionaire and ViacomCBS mogul said. “Success comes from failure, frustration and catastrophe,” and he had a life to prove it, finding each roadblock created another success story. “Changing your thinking about the event can take you from the stress of despair to the realm of possibility,” Rao said. The endpoint is not the end all. “What you really want is that feeling of purpose and being radiantly alive,” Rao said. “Investing in the process means we can start enjoying the journey.”

Married Outdoors... at the Drive-in

Laurel and Chris Janisse were determined to get married in 2020, despite the many logistical issues presented by an ongoing pandemic. On November 14, they pulled it off, and by holding it outdoors at the Skyway Drive-in in Fish Creek, even managed to safely host 200+ guests. Laurel, Door Guide Publishing’s longtime Art Director, recounts the couple’s successful planning.

‘‘ Having both been raised in Door County, Chris and I knew we wanted to get married here. In February 2020, we booked the Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor for our reception and the Ephraim

Moravian Church for the ceremony. Little did we know that just a few weeks later, the country would get shut down. Certain we would have to reschedule for a much later date, after a few months, we decided we still wanted to have the wedding in 2020. We knew we needed to get creative since neither of our chosen venues was still open. We reached out to the owner of the Skyway and asked if he’d consider having a wedding there, since it had never been done before, and he agreed. We originally chose November 14, 2020 as our wedding date, so we decided to stick with it so it wouldn’t interfere with the Skyway’s season. We reached out to Alexander’s to cater the food and appetizers, Victoria Danielle to photograph, hired two bartenders and provided a full bar, and had a lot of help from our friends at Door County Event Planners and Horseshoe Bay to plan and decorate. We were able to pull off an outdoor, COVID-friendly wedding in mid-November (temps were in the 40s with rain and sun here and there). We arrived in true Hollywood fashion by limo while guests enjoyed apps and hot beverages from 1-3pm. The ceremony began at 3:30pm. We had a small wedding party, just our dogs and brothers. Guests could either stand outside with us or sit in their cars listening in on an FM transmitter to witness vows. We also livestreamed the ceremony to those who weren’t able to attend. We rented a huge tent and several patio heaters to keep everyone warm if they wished to mingle during dinner. There was no late-night party or dancing (we played our own song playlist on a laptop!), just a fun social event to raise everyone’s spirits during an uncertain time. We will truly never forget this day or the friends and family that were there to support us! ’’
