Added onto Door Peninsula Winery in 2011, Door County Distillery became the first distillery on the Peninsula since prohibition, reviving Door County’s connection to spirits, paving the way for others. It’s unique architecture can be viewed inside and out seven days a week.
Built in 1893 on Historic Downtown 3rd ave in Sturgeon Bay, this building has been home to many endeavors such as a saloon, restaurant and even a cigar company. Most recently before becoming a bistro, it was Knappen’s Bakery.
Originally a saloon built in 1882 called the Kewaunee House, this Brew Pub has had many owners and expansions, even lore of Al Capone’s favorite retreat. Shipwrecked began operation in 1997 until it burnt down in fall of 2017. After a ground up total rebuild, Shipwrecked reopened in June 2018.
Originally established in 1945 by Campbell and Crummell and known for many years as the C & C Supper Club. The C&C had quite a history and was once owned by Dick Weisgerber of the Green Bay Packers. In 2010 the building was remodeled to it’s current look and opened as Cooper’s Corner. It currently houses Juniper’s Restaurant.
In the early 1900’s John Birtschinger started a lumber and feed mill with his sons. The mill operated until 1962. What was John’s home and lumber yard office is now Fat Louie’s Olive Oil Company, which opened up shop in 2011.
This building was the Carlsville schoolhouse built in 1868. The two room school taught around 60 students per year until it closed in 1964. In 1974, it was turned into Door Peninsula Winery, becoming Door County’s largest and oldest winery. The front of the building houses the original architecture and school bell.

The Jamaican Door
Imagine it’s 1949. You’re staying at one of Door County’s premier properties, the Alpine Resort in Egg Harbor. Your day oscillates between the golf course, the beach and a wicker chair flipping through Life Magazine. It would take an extra special kind of effort for work to reach you via phone. Your normal life is left behind because you are on vacation. You don’t even need to think about where your next meal is coming from, as dinner is served promptly at 6 o’clock right there at the resort — every night.
Even if you want to go out, it’s not as though there are alternate dining venues in town. Your only decisions to contemplate are: how many cocktails before dinner and whether the Chicken a la King or Liver & Onions sounds better. Hey, you’re not driving tonight so you might as well have another vodka gimlet with dinner. The band starts playing at 8 o’clock.
The band? It’s actually more like a small orchestra.
These self-contained, autonomous evenings played out across the peninsula at classic resorts like Maxwelton Braes in Baileys Harbor, Hotel Thorpe in Fish Creek, Hotel Du Nord in Sister Bay, and Anderson Hotel in Ephraim. The scenario sounds more like a modern day cruise ship experience than a vacation in Door County. There was little need to venture out since everything was taken care of right there on-property. Visitors were relieved of the burden of choice while enjoying vacation lengths two to three times longer than today.
Other than the occasional wedding band or a special event, house bands and live music are things of the past at Door County resorts. Like so many other amenities of the old days, a century’s worth of trends, styles and fashions have come and gone. Eventually, all that is left are some buildings full of memories.
To wit, there’s a room full of artifacts just off the main lobby at Alpine Resort that is one of the best little museums (that’s not technically a museum) in the entire county.
When The Alpine Resort was put up for sale last year, the entire county took notice. It was the end of an era, some said.
As of this writing, the specific future of the Alpine Resort is uncertain, providing plenty of fodder for speculative conversation amongst locals. What just about everybody can agree upon is that the property won’t remain the same whenever it changes hands. In that way, Alpine Resort is symbolic of the sea change in Door County. At a certain point we run out of euphemisms (classic, vintage, historic, antiquated) and places disappear.
Folks like to say things change at a glacial pace in Door County. In reality change on the Peninsula happens in fits and starts. A decade can roll by with nary a new building or business. Visitors are lulled into thinking the villages around the peninsula are static postcards. Then, in a burst of activity, Sister Bay buries its power lines and opens up the Highway 42 corridor to a host of new businesses. Egg Harbor invites rubbernecking with its sudden ‘skyline’ of new construction. Even Ephraim, a village committed to preserving its appearance, is uncharacteristically adding a sidewalk and burying its power lines. Visitors derive some comfort believing things haven’t changed around the peninsula. They remember going to Al Johnson’s in Sister Bay as children and seeing the goats on the roof. Supper clubs and taverns bridged the gap between the golden era of resorts and today. The Greenwood Supper Club in Fish Creek is one of the last of its breed in Door County. The vinyl booths and wood paneling almost compel the diner to order an Old Fashioned. The authenticity of taverns like AC Tap in Baileys Harbor and Bayside Tavern in Fish Creek (affectionately known as The Tap and The Bayside to locals) is stamped every time you hear the crack of bar dice against the bar top. These are the establishments carrying the torch for the Door County of yore.
in Fish Creek opened its doors over a decade ago, it was the bellwether for a new era of restaurants. Wild Tomato took over an existing pizza space, Digger’s, which was best known for its proximity to Peninsula State Park’s main entrance. Wild Tomato,
however, had a novel concept: wood-fired pizzas, hand-tossed crusts, an interesting beer list and an array of unique, sometimes Boathouse on the Bay
local ingredients. It doesn’t seem earth-shattering now, but people were suspicious of these new-fangled pizzas, until they
tried them. Now there are three Wild Tomato pizzerias in Door County.
When Parador in Egg Harbor received 3.5 stars from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2011 and Wickman House in Ellison Bay received 3 stars a few years later, there was a sense that the dining scene was changing. The Journal Sentinel hadn’t reviewed a Door County restaurant since the turn of the last century. Suddenly, these upstart restaurants were legitimized. In the cases of Parador and Wickman House, ideas were being brought directly from urban dining landscapes like Chicago and NYC. Historic buildings served as backdrops for an exciting mash-up of old and new. It’s this genre of restaurant that gets the attention of visitors looking for variations in the habitual haunts of decades past. The array of cuisines available to the Door County visitor today would be unthinkable a dozen years ago. Food and Wine Magazine ran
a story in October, 2018 with the title “We Can’t Believe How Cool Door County Is Being Right Now.” The author was absolutely gobsmacked, not believing that places like Trixie’s, Ephraim Coffee Lab, Roots Inn & Kitchen, Island Orchard Cider,
Wisconsin Cheese Masters and Wickman House existed in Door County — a peninsula he thought he knew well. If today’s visitor thinks about it too long, he or she can be flummoxed by the multitude of choices.
Does a place still have its same identity even as individual components of the whole change? This is the paradox of change in Door County. Local legends die. Decadesold restaurants change hands and then change their overall ‘concept.’ Cottages are replaced by condos. Even the iconic Eagle Tower in Peninsula State Park came down. A local groundswell of support and money ensured that Eagle Tower will be replaced. But will it be the same? Luckily for Door County visitors, its natural splendor changes on a geological time scale. The shorelines, the state parks, the sunsets and wildlife should remain largely unchanged. Regardless of age, every restaurant now seems to be drifting toward sourcing locally and incorporating sustainable practices. It isn’t impossible to imagine a future consisting of Door County businesses on the forefront
of sustainability, acting greener than any of their big city counterparts. Pilot programs are underway around the county that focus
on composting food waste, eliminating all plastic and styrofoam usage, and conserving water in real, measurable ways. Perhaps
true green behavior will be the next big thing. There will be a day when food not prepared in a SLO (Sustainable, Local, Organic) manner may seem as anachronistic as a house orchestra. Maybe a harmonious relationship with the environment is the next wood-fired pizza. If businesses continue to operate with an eye toward the future, there will never be a bygone Door County to miss. A rising tide lifts all boats.

This authentic fishing village lies at the northernmost tip of the peninsula — known as the ‘top of the thumb.’ Island ferries, weathered fishing sheds, and an old fishing boat that sits on dry land reflect its historic maritime heritage. Go fishing!
A fine restaurant with panoramic views, a few souvenir shops, and cottages occupy old buildings along the village’s only street and waterfront. Scandinavian imports, nautical items, jewelry, locally made jams, jellies, and pies can be found here.
Watch the incredible sunsets over Porte des Mortes (Death’s Door), go fishing, take a scenic boat ride, or take a drive on the county’s famous ‘winding’ road.

There are exhibits on shipwrecks, lifesaving techniques, and the Ted Berch model collection — twenty Great Lakes vessels, including one of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Tour a 1930s tug boat and watch a film of its last fishing trip.
This fun event begins at 5 o’clock with local food and live music. There is a Boat Regatta that is followed by an exciting display of fireworks.
Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness park — 2,373 acres of forests, wetlands, and meadows. Fern Trail has interpretative panels to guide visitors through the forest. There are miles of hiking and offroad biking trails, cross-country skiing paths, beaches, and campgrounds.
This ferry carries passengers to Washington Island through the islandstudded strait of ‘Port des Mortes’. The captain narrates historical facts during the seven mile journey. Views include the Pilot and Plum lighthouses.
The last few miles of highway 42 curves and zig zags through fields and forest and ends at Northport Pier. It is one of the county’s most beautiful and photographed sites — especially in autumn when maple trees are in full color. A must see.

What better way to honor the past and celebrate the continuing energy of the little Town that COULD, than with the opening of a new Town Hall in January of their 150th year? In preparation for the summer celebration, and to commemorate the actual anniversary, residents have bannered the streets with flags calling attention to the genesis of their little town, established in 1869.
At the May 25 Jacksonport MaiFest parade, 4-H kids of the area will squire an Anniversary float in honor of the shipping, logging, commercial fishing and farming that were once the lifelines of Jacksonport life.
The actual Anniversary celebration on August 10 will feature a set of “Community Day” activities at Lakeside Park, with live music as part of the summer afternoon. Old-time picnic games
have been organized for kids and adults alike, and an ever-favorite fish boil will be bubbling on location, as well as the succulent scent of pork roast being prepared for a community dinner.
A surprise and added treat comes as every residence located within the town boundaries will have received two free tickets for dinner at this event, by way of being the Town’s property tax payers. The tickets can be used for either the pig roast or the fish boil, with additional tickets available for $5, and simpler fare for kids’ choices. The bands will continue through the social time, and after dark the evening will conclude in a dark sky filled with fireworks.
As residents join in planning ways to commemorate their traditions, members of Jacksonport’s highly active Historical Society are working hard to compile photos taken by resident Fred Erksin for public showing. Combined with the opportunity to tour the new Town building during the August event, complete with a shiny new red fire engine on display, the added opportunity to enjoy a video of Erskin’s collection of town photos promises to be a high point of the afternoon. — Jude Genereaux

Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik
In 1973 Al Johnson sodded the roof of his restaurant and added goats to graze upon it. Since then, Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik has become synonymous with Door County. With goats atop its grassy roof, this Norwegian-style log cabin restaurant has grown to symbolize the county. Like Mount Rushmore or the Hollywood sign, Al Johnson’s is a must-see.
The restaurant sits squarely in the middle of Sister Bay — the busiest Door County village — its goats presiding over 1,936 feet of waterfront. Evidence of Al Johnson’s importance to the community is overwhelming, and invites a ‘chicken and the egg’ type of debate. Which came first: Sister Bay’s development trajectory or Al Johnson’s? Namesake and founder Al Johnson once said that his goal was to get people talking about something other than Ephraim, and to honor his Swedish heritage. True to his word, the restaurant honors that heritage with a classic Swedish menu served by a wait staff in traditional dresses. “Where’s the place with the goats on the roof?” is a perennial FAQ at the Door County Visitors Bureau.
In 2019, the restaurant was awarded the Governor’s Tourism Service Excellence Award. A decade earlier, Al Johnson’s sold the waterfront property — forming the unobstructed wide expanse of marinas, beaches and parks enjoyed today — to the Village of Sister Bay.
Al Johnson famously led by example. He would never ask anybody to do anything he wouldn’t do himself. It is this humility in service that carries on today. What do they call a Belgian pie in Belgium? They just call it ‘pie.’ That’s an old joke to accompany an old pie recipe from the old country. The old country is of course Belgium, which generated a wave of settlers in Southern Door County over a century and a half ago. Unlike the throngs of immigrants elsewhere throughout Wisconsin, these Belgians tended to stick around. Because of those deep roots, there exists a portal into the past that a modern day Belgian might not recognize.
It starts with the few idiomatic expressions that have trickled down through generations. These words and phrases would sound like an old-timey dialect to the modern ear. At festivals around Door County, such as Belgian Days there is certain to be Belgian Trippe, a pork and cabbage sausage, and Belgian Jutt, a mashed potato and cabbage stew. Drop a Belgian into one of these festivals and he or she might identify these dishes as something his or her great-grandmother used to make.
The queen of old Belgian fare is the Belgian Pie. The basic construction of this confection is a yeast-raised crust, followed by fruit filling and topped with cottage cheese. Being Door County, many Belgian Pies are made with the local Montmorency Cherry, but traditional filling includes prunes, raisins, apples and even rice. The variations are endless, but the basic look is rooted in its heritage.
Gina Guth is a local baking professional who specializes in Belgian pies. She learned from her mother, who was a baker of local renown in the 1960s and 1970s. t is fitting that “STAVKIRKE, The story of Washington Island’s Norwegian Replica”, comes to us from the pen of Dick Purinton, one of Washington Island’s finest writers and a keeper of island history.
Purinton’s fresh-off-the-press collection takes us through the inspiration for and construction of the uniquely beautiful Stavkirke, translated “stave church” and located on Town Line Road on Washington Island, across from its big brother, Trinity Lutheran Church.
The inspiration for the creation of Stavkirke originated with the island’s Lutheran pastor, Rev James Reiff, who was Trinity pastor from 1978-1985. Feeling it would be a dramatic way to celebrate the island’s abundant Nordic heritage, Reiff convinced church members, and islanders in general, to support and build what has since become an asset to the entire community.
The book covers the great contribution islanders made to this difficult, improbable project, as citizens came forth with funds and sweat equity to create a stunning replica of a traditional Stavkirke. The total cost was about $76,000, including the value of contributed labor. Ultimately, the small community raised the money and also provided the required craftsmanship and timber.
“Stavkirke,” the book, documents the key individuals who accomplished the ambitious project. Purinton relates the initial efforts by Pat Mangan, a Sister Bay architect who had a love for Norwegian heritage buildings, and the island carpenters John Herschberger and Dale Bjarnarson. Great care was taken to not only design the building in accordance with tradition, but also to use the specific materials that make it an authentic rendering.
The land across from Trinity Church was selected and construction began in earnest in 1992. Purinton’s anecdotes identify the many island residents who assisted the building process by learning about new and old tools and techniques, including dragonhead carver David Ranney, volunteer Lars Goodlet, and many others.
The book goes step-by-step from the inspiration for this beautiful recreation to the dedication of the finished Stavkirke on August 4, 1995, and features excellent photography of the project and the personalities involved as the stunning building took shape.
Some of the church’s previous pastors have been included through their remembrances and comments. Overall, Purinton’s book reveals the learning curve needed to bring together a small community in accomplishing a unique dream. — Jude Genereaux

The business center for the Southern Door area of the Door Peninsula is rich with a life that most visitors never experience. This little fishing village sits on the Green Bay shoreline in Southern Door. Increase Claflin, the county’s first settler, built a log cabin here in 1835. Today it is known for walleye, bass, and perch fishing. Its annual festival, ‘Little Sturgeon Days’ has live music, a horseshoe tournament and parade. Go fishing! Located in the town of Gardner.
This surprising little place, tucked away in the heart of the county, is surrounded by farmland. There’s a winery that offers tastings and a shop with its own products, a restaurant with a model train that entertains kids and adults alike, a friendly pub, and a pizza place with outdoor dining. This entire island is a rustic state park and popular camping and kayaking destination. One of the island’s most unique features is a summer estate built by Icelandic inventor Chester Thordarson in 1920. Among the buildings is a limestone boathouse decorated with characters from the Norse Runic alphabet and original hand-carved Scandinavian furniture. Go visit the estate! One could easily assume the owner of On Deck Clothing has his hands full running five retail stores. But Mitch Larson always has more than business demanding his attention — history and style are also passions that drive him.
In 1987 Mitch opened the first On Deck Clothing store in Fish Creek, followed by the Sister Bay location in 2008. In 2009, he acquired a Sturgeon Bay historical structure for his third store. Shopkeeping has long been part of the Larson family tradition. Mitch’s great grandparents, Wenzel and Mary Bunda, established the “Bunda Store” in Sister Bay in 1888.
Mitch could hardly believe the serendipity when he was able to acquire this family homestead structure in 2006. After passing through his great grandparents and grandparents, fires, business failures and a brief renewal in the early 2000s, the corner “Bunda Store” in Sister Bay sat empty.
Seizing the opportunity to purchase the building, Larson determined to bring its heritage back to life. “That store was not just about four walls. It was about family lineage, my history, a community’s history and generations of steadfast commitment.”
With the goal of capturing “old time charm”, Larson focused on recreating a sense of older, beautifully preserved buildings at his establishments in Sister Bay and Sturgeon Bay — with careful attention to detail throughout.
Mitch took the keys to that heritage in hand, melding his vision with the hope of instilling traditional local style. “This is what makes Door County unique,” he says. Having studied hundreds of vintage Village photos, Mitch is fulfilling his mission “to preserve what we already have here.”
The updated Sister Bay Village Exchange and an updated interior at Sturgeon Bay’s On Deck location will both be unveiled this coming season. “I’m proud of my history,” says Mitch, “and creating traditional-looking buildings with a modern twist is my way of honoring that.” —Jude

Irarely visit any place in the world without reading about it first. Once there, I prowl local bookstores and question knowledgeable owners for those books I need to tell me more about the place. The histories, maps, biographies, essays, stories, local poets, even local cook books. I want to see beyond the façade of restaurants, shops, galleries, local entertainment tabloids, and advertising, and purchase books to read while I’m there and then carry them home with me, adding to my own library for future enjoyment and reference. There’s nothing like revisiting a warm summer place on a cold winter night in the pages of a good local book that brings the people, places, history, and culture alive in your hands.
Door County has a wealth of fine books that capture the past and ‘presence’ of this place. Where to begin? I would suggest H. R. Holand’s Old Peninsula Days, a must for your personal library of Door County books. Originally published in l925, and followed by many subsequent editions, Holand captures the lure, lore, and history of the county’s people and places, references earlier historians from Indian times, even French explorers, and gives the reader a solid sense of our pioneering times. He delves into all of the villages and towns from their very beginnings, including Rock Island, Washington Island, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor...not to mention stories of settlers toiling in the woods and on the waters.
According to noted Door County bibliophile, part-time Sister Bay resident, and Egg Harbor book dealer Charles F. Calkins, “Old Peninsula Days” is a quick but interesting read about Door County because it is an anecdotal history. The relatively short vignettes do not constitute hard history that details the important aspects of the county’s evolution. Holand’s preceding (1917) two-volume History of Door County is the more characteristic “standard” county history of its period.
“I once heard someone say that Holand included “the leftovers” from his 1917 history in Old Peninsula Days, published eight years later in 1925. That is not true, however, as Holand included many of the same topics in both histories,” Calkins said.
In Chapter II of Holand’s Old Peninsula Days, he details the presence of the Native American culture on the peninsula through the words of 17th Century French historian La Potherie, who beautifully captures life among the Indians upon the Door landscape:
“The country is a beautiful one, and they have fertile fields planted with Indian corn. Game is abundant at all seasons, and in winter they hunt bears and beavers. They hunt deer at all times, and they even catch wild fowl in nets. In autumn there is a prodigious abundance of ducks, both black and white, of excellent flavor, and the savages stretch nets in certain places where these fowl alight to feed upon the wild rice. Then advancing silently in their canoes, they draw them up alongside of the nets in which
the birds have been caught. They also capture pigeons in their nets in the summer. They make in the woods wide paths in which they spread large nets in the shape of a bag and attached at each side they make a little hut of branches in which they hide. When the pigeons in their flight get within this open space, the savages pull a small cord which is drawn through the edge of the nets and thus capture sometimes five or six hundred birds in one morning, especially in windy weather. All the year round they fish for sturgeon, and for herring in the autumn; and in winter they have fruits. This fishery suffices to maintain large villages. They also gather wild rice and acorns. Accordingly, the peoples of the bay can live in utmost comfort.”
Charlie Calkins concludes, “In my view, you have to give credit where credit is due. Holand was one of the first to take the history of Door County seriously and set about to do something about it, record it in written form for posterity. Holand was educated and had a facility with the written word. At times, I believe, he played “fast and easy” with the facts, and in these instances he did not let the facts get in the way of what he thought was a good story. Much of what we know to be the true history of Door County, nevertheless, has come from Holand’s pen.”

With special emphasis on the period 1870-1940. Our collection of farm buildings re-assembled on site, plus old-time farm implements, is impressive. On summer Wednesdays, 19th century craft demonstrations and kids’ activities are offered. The Veblen Study Cabin is an especially unique piece of Island history. From 1896 to 1926, world-famous economist Thorstein Veblen spent his summers here, and in 1916 he built a study cabin and home. Thanks to the Washington Island Heritage Conservancy, the cabin was moved and is being restored on the shore of Little Lake, next to Jacobsen Museum — which is itself perhaps the most wonderfully strange small museum in Wisconsin.

The Sister Bay Historical Society has long served as a window into yesteryear. The Corner of the Past - its collection of old settlement buildings housing archives, antique artifacts and farm implements - has been a museum and a backdrop for historical presentations, social gatherings, concerts and farmers markets for many years. Now, however, the Sister Bay Historical Society is turning its gaze from the past to the future with a new project called The History Center.
The New History Center signifies a new concept for the Sister Bay Historical Society. It will of course provide more space for the ever-growing inventory of heirlooms, rarities and relics, for both display and storage, but in addition, the Center will be home to new passive and interactive exhibits, both permanent and rotating; provide office space for the SBHS; provide archival storage for collections and paper records; provide display areas for large objects; include a work space for restoration and upkeep of artifacts; and include meeting space for the Society and other nonprofit groups. The new Center has the capability to become a year-round community space for Sister Bay and many other possibilities, including meetings, workshops and special events.

Famously, the Door Peninsula is part of the Niagara Escarpment, the ‘Great Arc’ of ancient dolostone cliffs that sweeps hundreds of miles from eastern Wisconsin north into the Upper Peninsula, and then arches east into the province of Ontario and south into Upper New York State. The most famous site is Niagara Falls, a place so mesmerizing that it would almost certainly be a U.S. National Park today if heavy industry had not gotten there first.
The Niagara Escarpment is also recognized for globally significant levels of biodiversity that include rare flora and fauna in varied habitats and microclimates. Door County, for instance, is home to the World’s largest population of the very rare Hines Emerald Dragonfly, the U.S.’s only endangered dragonfly.
For millennia, the arc has been a migration corridor for animals and humans. As proof, there are ample Indian archeological sites and a rich maritime heritage that includes beautiful lighthouses like those on the Door Peninsula.
Notably, the Door Peninsula has a twin peninsula in Ontario, located on the other side of the Great Arc. Canada has appreciated its importance for much longer than the U.S. — there are already two National Parks on the Bruce Peninsula and it has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 1990.
Indian Palisades, Rock Island State Park
Unique geology, critical location, globally significant biodiversity, rich cultural and maritime heritage — the Great Arc is a special place and the Door and Bruce Peninsulas share the same qualities. Isn’t it time to show our pride and designate “our” peninsula as a National Park, too?
The proposed Grand Traverse Islands National Park would encompass some of the islands that make up the ‘Grand Traverse’ between Michigan’s Garden Peninsula and the Door Peninsula. Similar to the Apostle Islands, the new park would largely be remote and rugged and protect critical habitat while stabilizing historical maritime treasures that are crumbling into ruins on the more remote islands. The beautiful simplicity of the proposal is that it requires no acquisition of private property. There is enough land already owned by ‘We the People’ to make it happen.

Clink!, located at 10331 North Water Street (Hwy 42), is a DIY craft studio that offers a variety of wood, leather, jewelry, and home decor projects. Reclaimed Resale & Workshop, located at 10451 Townline Drive (corner of Hwy 42), is both a consignment/ resale store and a wood sign workshop that focuses on stencils. Both places offer a fun experience while making a custom, handmade piece that you can take home the same day. Making a custom project at Clink! is fun and easy, and the proprietors offer snacks, wine and beer. Owners Mike and Courtney invite you to come on in – no reservations necessary, although they do accept them – and choose a project from the display. All projects are self-paced and they have all the tools, materials, and instructions ready to go for you. After growing up in Sister Bay, Jesse Johnson helped his parents Kris and JJ launch the Waterfront Restaurant next to their popular JJ’s/LaPuerta.
Soon after, he met wife-to-be Rachael, started a growing family, and together the couple opened the Creamery in 2015.

Connie Glowacki’s art represents the unique spirit of Door County, she says. Featuring people of varied ages and backgrounds, the figures are united, even briefly, in specific landscapes and also in their enjoyment of the beautiful surrounding natural scenes and representative activities, like feeding swooping gulls with a backdrop of one of the county’s beautiful sunsets or a well-known vantage point.
Even though it might not be immediately apparent, Glowacki is always telling a story with each painting. “I’m almost always taking people to places I’ve discovered or imagined,” she said. “Each painting is a story that brings back a memory, transporting both of us, the artist and the viewer, to a special place. I’m trying to lead us all to greater insights and more understanding of our roles in the world.”
Connie says her basic underlying goal is the same for each artwork, to create an image that reveals her philosophies and creative purpose. “Our past experiences and the values resulting from them,” said Glowacki, “lead each of us artists to select certain subject matter and decide how we’ll present the images as our art.”
On April 7, 2019, Glowacki and her husband Mike briefly visited her paintings at the U.S. Embassy in Prague, in the Czech Republic. The nine paintings were selected by U.S. Ambassador Steve King and his wife Karen. Glowacki was especially proud that each of the scenes pictured Door County, her spiritual home. Ambassador King told Connie and Mike that her art has been highly appreciated by the guests at the embassy’s frequent receptions. Undeniably, Door County is filled with natural beauty. The water, the rock formations, the trees – we are surrounded by physical manifestations of one of the most beautiful places on earth. Among that bounty, what most inspires Ephraim artist Fred Bridenhagen, a lifelong native, is the natural beauty that can only be found off the beaten path. There are still so many untouched, hidden places, he says, you just have to take the time to seek them. “Let your senses take over. Listen for water running. Inhale the smells. It’s almost like an epiphany when you discover a new place. And it’s sort of crazy that they still exist,” says Bridenhagen.
An artist with no formal training, Bridenhagen has never failed to capture Door County’s beauty in his spectacular work. His newest collection, all done with oils on linen, portrays these wild, off-the-beaten-path places. “People don’t take enough time to explore. We’re sitting on such a beautiful piece of the planet. I want to capture the wonderment that draws everyone here.”
Fred often doesn’t find his inspiration by going to the commonly-known landmarks or parks. He prefers to wander and get lost, to stumble upon Door County’s beauty where many have not traveled. He doesn’t share where his ‘secret spots’ are, but he invites you to do what he does – follow your senses, take in the beauty of your surroundings, and forget about the hustle and bustle of life for a while. Maybe you’ll just happen to stumble upon the inspiration behind one of his newest paintings. Fred works from his own original nature photographs. Each painting takes one to two weeks to complete. He explains that his style for oils is actually similar to watercolor because he doesn’t use a heavy paint application.

A budding artist remembers his peninsula youth
ADoor County native, Joe Risch says growing up on the Peninsula clearly shaped his “artistic soul.” The youngest of three siblings, and raised on a former cherry orchard in Gills Rock, Joe fondly remembers his childhood as a series of often-solo adventures.
Exploring the cherry orchard, and experiencing the beauty and color of his immediate world, his family’s old farmhouse was filled with canvases created by his talented father and sister. Creativity was praised, inspired and instilled, and now Joe has plunged into the discovery of his own creative niche.
Joe says he always knew he would eventually find his happiness in creativity and art, and ultimately went to school to study music and landscape architecture. After many years of random jobs, in 2018 he invested himself fully in becoming the artist that he felt lived and breathed within him. He bought and borrowed art supplies and tattooing equipment, and found a new determination to show the world his perspective on life.
In October, Joe took on the “Inktober” challenge, a social media event in which artists and illustrators of all skill sets display their creativity and perseverance by creating a new piece of art every day for 31 days in a row. Joe used the challenge to showcase his talent to prospective tattoo shops seeking talent, give his family, friends and vendors some insight into his skills, and prove to himself he could successfully finish such a grueling project. Inktober has since resulted in a rejiggering of his work as an artist: he has since been flooded with commissions and even sold some Inktober designs to an Amazon.com program that markets t-shirt designs through the massive online retailer.
The new commissions range from designs for business marketing, fanboy and nerd art, tattoo concepts, and even joint portraits of owners’ past and present pets. Joe feels he’s on the cusp of big things. He says the proverbial life of the starving artist isn’t at all easy, but it is a life that this burgeoning artist is determined to redefine for himself and live to its fullest potential. — Laurel Ciohon

During Christmas break, my dad attached a sled to our German Shepherd and we went for a ride. Just getting dark, snowing, Christmas lights…we moseyed along Hwy 42 before heading back to the house.
Wildlife was everywhere, but I best recall a family of rabbits who came back year after year. Living under the chicken coop, they drove my parents bonkers.
Seeking thrills was easy in summer, and one of our favorite pastimes was jumping off docks. Whether by foot, board, or bike, we created some big splashes.
My fantasy vision of the Skyway Drive-in, where just about every local tried to sneak in at least
once. I’d often imagine I was James Bond or that we were having our own D-Day invasion!
Every local kid had a summer job, some year-round. My all time favorite was being on the team at Jerry’s Flowers. Watering plants offered a meditative space where my imagination soared.
Living on a run-down cherry orchard, our property was dotted with dilapidated buildings. The largest, this eerie old barn, sat right outside our front door.
Our property sat atop a hill that provided a surreal picture of the Gills Rock Independence Day Fireworks. Some years we threw parties, other years we enjoyed the view alone.
My friends and I loved skateboarding. Some of us were great, others not so great, but it brought us together. We made skate videos, hung out day and night, and roved around in a pack.
We were always climbing on buildings, but one of our favorites was the Walkway Shops in Sister Bay. And, a nice contrast to goats on the roof, Al Johnson’s in winter...with snowballs!
Some of my best memories are camping with dad, listening to surf guitar records, cooking steaks. If I’m in Door County, camping is involved. Potawatomi and Washington and Rock Island are favorites.
Another fantasy vision! Although closed in 1998, Thumb Fun holds fun and scary memories for all
who visited. Owner Doug Butchart died this year. RIP, Doug, you made a lot of people happy!
Living between Gills Rock and Northport, getting to school every day was a haul. It eventually became a favorite part of my day, listening to CDs, imagining myself playing music to a crowd.
In my abundant teenage dreams, here’s what it looked and felt like when I finally took center stage at a Gibraltar High School varsity football game…ah, the musical glory of rock ’n roll!

A May Evening in 1994: Harbinger of the County’s
Aquarter of a century ago, everything in Door County operated on a much smaller scale. The thriving local music scene at the time was no different. The musicians carved out their existence in local watering holes and restaurants. Live music was the norm, not the exception, as melody makers were sprinkled throughout the county. All the

artists needed were a few sets of ears, maybe an amp.
That musical model was turned on its head when the local entertainers gathered on one stage, on one night, May 20, 1994. Of course, these performers were known to get together and occasionally jam -- but not like this -- 40 of them all at once! And the so-called Passages Live! Show was the perfect way to indoctrinate the new 725-seat Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek.
A few of the names gathered that night still resonate today: Big Mouth, Doc Heide, Julian Hagen, Jim Spector, David Hatch... The majority of the artists, however, have moved on or passed on. But, for one big night, the producer of the show, John Nelson, had procured a monumental assembly of talent. Like a photograph of an extended family, a time capsule for a specific era in Door County had been captured.
Passages Live was a celebration of Door County arts. The event aired on the radio, and CDs, videos and t-shirts commemorated this era-defining spectacle. Little did everyone know that they were also heralding a change in the music landscape. The venue itself,
Door Community Auditorium was built to attract national touring acts. Slowly but surely this would alter some

of the local scene. Over the course of the next two decades, each community would solidify their own outdoor performing arts centers, ensuring a free concert in the county almost every single summer eve. These have grown into bread and butter venues for some Door County musical mainstays, while music-licensing behemoths like ASCAP and BMI have shaken down the mom & pop bar/restaurant music scene into near oblivion.
All is not lost. If you look (and listen!) hard enough, the spirit of the big night carries on in Door County. As if still tethered to that jubilee, two of the sponsors of Passages Live!, The Cookery and The White Gull Inn, are still two of the most reliable places to find live musical accompaniment with your meal. County Sound CDs and Tapes (another sponsor that night) no longer exists, but if it did, surely amongst the racks you would find present day local singer/songwriters Katie Dahl or Jeanne Kuhns, both of whom embody a time and place now passed into memory.

What began in 1985 as a venture in employee housing evolved into a series of Sunday night concerts with folk, Americana and alternative music. Northern Sky is like no other theater company. One might think their most unique feature is that they perform their summer season in the middle of a state park, beneath red pine and the night sky (6/12-8/24). But that’s not what’s most unusual about this popular destination.

Kevin Kelly, co-founder of Wired Magazine said, “technology is how we hack life.” We use it to make life better. Think of all the advancements made in medical technology alone! But just because surgeons have the technology to work on two clients at the same time, should they? It begs the question: if we lived a slower, simpler, more-balanced life, would there be so much disease?
According to American Academy of Neurology, a study on the effects of higher cortisol (the stress hormone) on the brain, has proven that cortisol does “lower brain volumes and impair memory in asymptomatic younger to middle-aged adults, with the association being evident particularly in women.” Which means our stressed brains are shrinking...
Amit Sood, MD, professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic said, “Although our brains have evolved over time, the speed of life today is the main stressor — it’s much faster than our brain’s ability to adapt.”

As someone who has always been blessed with good health, Door County Medical Center was not a place where I’ve spent much time, at least not since 1982, when I was born there. I’ve had a few health scares, but nothing prepared me for the night of September 2, 2018. I was involved in a freak household accident that left me with a broken hip and femur, broken hand and wrist, and several broken ribs.
After being rushed to Door County Medical Center, I was almost immediately sent into emergency surgery. The days, weeks, and months that followed were the hardest of my life, but with the help of the incredible DCMC staff, I was able to slowly make a full recovery.
My surgical team rebuilt my hip and femur with two titanium rods and rebuilt my shattered wrist with a titanium plate. My physical therapists assisted me while I learned to walk again and my occupational therapists helped me regain strength and movement in my hand. From the incredible nurses that were right by my side during my entire stay, to the helpful people in the financial office, to my amazing counselor that I still meet with, I’m nothing short of amazed by DCMC’s kindness and care. At the time of my accident I was unfortunately without medical insurance. The DCMC financial office introduced me to the Community Fund, specifically designed for patients without insurance, which helped cover a huge percentage of my medical bills. The remainder of my bills were covered by my savings and donations by members of the Door County community through a crowd-funding website. I’m still overwhelmed by their generosity and selflessness.
As I continue to recover, I’ve slowly started running again. One of my favorite races is the Door County Half Marathon, held each spring in Peninsula State Park. Each year, in order to participate, I raise money for a local cause. This year I’ll raise money for the DCMC Community Fund, a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I am forever grateful to this community and will continue to give back as long as I am able. — Laurel Ciohon
